Geneva teen pursues her dream of ballet at prestigious New York school

I

n ballet, an interesting paradox exists.

In order for their movements to appear graceful and uncomplicated, dancers must put themselves through rigorous, physically demanding work that requires years of intense training and discipline.

Even at her young age, it’s a contradiction Marin Patterson of Geneva knows very well.

The 16-year-old is currently a student at the world-renowned School of American Ballet located in New York City.

“To be a dancer requires so much strength, crosstraining and self-responsibility,” she said. “But with that, it’s all about making the audience believe it’s effortless.

That quality is so difficult, but when you accomplish it, it’s such a dopamine rush.”

Patterson’s love of dance came early in life. She started in park district programs at age 2, later finding an opportunity to take part in a local production of “The Nutcracker.”

Her love of dancing then led her to Elise Flagg Academy of Dance in Geneva. That’s when things really took off.

“Elise Flagg and JacLyn Allott helped me become the kind of dancer I wanted to be,” said Patterson of the founder and instructor, respectively. “That’s when I was 9, and I realized ballet was my passion.”

The pair worked with Patterson, encouraging her to take her talent to the next level at SAB, as it is commonly known. The most prestigious ballet school in the United States, SAB was established in 1934 by Russia-born George Balanchine, a choreographer widely considered to be the father of American ballet. It serves as the official school of the New York City Ballet.

The teen’s first experience was through a five-week intensive summer session in 2022. At the end, she was asked to stay on as a full-time student, but declined as she wasn’t yet ready to live apart from her family.

Returning this past summer, Patterson was again extended an invitation to continue on. This time she accepted.

Patterson dances in multiple classes, each lasting an hour and a half, six days a week. Classes are on pointe, requiring uncompromising form and focus, and find dancers practicing at the barre and through floor work.

Another area of study is combinations. Instructors will demonstrate a series of movements, after which students will partner with those in the men’s classes to mirror what they’ve been shown.

For dancers like Patterson, the expectations extend far beyond the physical work.

“Ballet teaches you a whole other level of etiquette,” she said. “We have to wear a uniform every day, we have to make sure that our pointe shoes look good, and that we’re taking care of them to make sure they last.”

Jenifer Ringer directs the intermediate and advance divisions and oversees artistic programming at SAB. A former principal dancer herself, Ringer is among those who help dancers with aspirations to perform in a company realize their potential.

“Our students recognize that in order to have the possibility of a professional dance career, they must be highly disciplined in how they manage their daily routines to balance academics with ballet, care for their bodies and health in the same way as an elite athlete, & ENTERTAINMENT MAY 2025 8 ARTS

and bring an extraordinary level of focus and commitment to their daily training,” Ringer said. “This is so much more than an ‘ordinary’ teenager is asked to do.”

While ballet is much of her day-today, Patterson is also a student at the Professional Children’s School. The in-person school caters to young people working in the arts. Sarah Jessica Parker and Macaulay Culkin number among its alumni.

In her free time, Patterson also enjoys being among the friends she’s made at SAB. “It’s almost like a second home,” she said. “It’s like a boarding school, but not as frigid as the typical boarding school experience is shown to be. We all support each other. It’s one giant community.”

She also loves to explore her neighborhood on New York’s Upper West Side, and marvels that the city’s massive

size and scope no longer feel daunting to her. An added perk is that as a SAB student, Patterson is able to see ballet performances at the Lincoln Center at no cost.

Her favorite is the Balanchine-composed Concerto Barocco.

If it sounds like Patterson is living out her dreams, she would readily agree, expressing gratitude for the life she has and hope for the one she is ardently working toward.

“I feel like ballet is not only a way for me to express myself and my emotion, but it’s also taught me so much about etiquette and grace. I have grown so appreciative of that,” she said. “It’s so rewarding to do it correctly and be proud of myself in that way. I have such a passion and so much respect for professional dancers. I hope that one day, I can be one of them.”

Entertainment with the City of Elgin Coming soon

here’s plenty to do when visiting the City of Elgin thanks to the city’s Cultural Arts & Special Events Department.

“We produce or co-produce over 50 events per year in Elgin, including usually one large event per month July through October,” says Amanda Harris, director of Cultural Arts & Special Events.

The events give folks an opportunity to visit various locations in the city. For instance, all the movies and concerts in the park are held at a variety of parks throughout the city. These events often feature more than just a film or music under the stars.

“All our movies in the park have added programming, such as maybe building robots made out of found materials when we show Wild Robot or going on a treasure hunt for Moana 2,” says Harris.

Even the movies on the lawn series for adults offers films under the stars with a twist, like offering a dance lesson before showing Dirty Dancing.

“Many communities offer movies or concerts in the park, but we offer a unique take with a dance lesson and specialty cocktail,” Harris says.

Even the events themselves feature a theatrical element. For instance, this year’s dinosaur-themed End of Summer bash will have a Jurassic Park background for the event.

“We build a lot of props,” she adds.

Looking to build upon their success, this month comes the ribbon cutting for the renovation and expansion of the Hemmens Cultural Center. The $14 million renovation includes an additional 15,000-square-feet, a modernized box office, enhanced ADA accessibility features and a new bar.

A notable addition to the Hemmens Cultural Center is the new reception area with an outdoor balcony.

The reception area will serve as a welcoming space for guests to gather and relax, while the balcony offers breathtaking views of the newly renovated Civic Center Plaza.

• May 18: Ribbon cutting for the new addition at The Hemmens Cultural Center. The ribbon cutting will be at 2:30 p.m. followed by building tours, refreshments and a performance by 360 ALLSTARS, a high-flying urban circus for all ages. Tickets are just $5.

• May 24: Michael Palascak bring his comedy to The Hemmens Cultural Center.

You’ve seen him on all of your favorite late night shows, his "Comedy Central Half Hour" and "Last Comic Standing."

• Concerts in the Park are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, June 5-Aug. 14, alternating between Wing Park Bandshell and Lords Park Pavilion. Grab some dinner from a food truck serving good eats before and during each concert.

• Movies in the Park are held on Friday nights, June 6-Aug. 15, at various parks.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “Onward,” “Soul” and “The Wild Robot” kick off the series in June. Be sure to arrive before dusk for pre-movie themed activities, including character appearances and interactive games.

Other popular events include the End of Summer Bash in August and La Fiesta de Elgin, celebrating Mexican Independence Day in September.

Artist OF THE MONTH

Lisa Dienst-Thomas The Tri-Cities are booming with arts and artists — perhaps nowhere more vibrantly than Batavia’s Water Street Studios, which hosts events, galleries and up to 25 artists in residence. Each month, Kane County Magazine and Water Street Studios are partnering to highlight artists and their work.

F

antastical Blooms, artist Lisa Dienst-Thomas’ current work, is inspired by the coral reef and Arizona desert, seeing her engineer intricate flowers using a combination of digital modeling and traditional metalsmithing techniques to emulate the biomes' enigmatic beauty. “They generally start with a small glimpse of inspiration but grow through my curiosity to learn new techniques or use old methods in new ways,” she says. “I never truly know what they’ll grow into until they’re finished.” Dienst-Thomas credits her Graduate research with her ability to add another level of color, texture and dimension to her floral creations. “Each of my Blooms highlights one or more techniques using form, color, or texture to inspire joy or curiosity in the viewer,” she says.

Dienst-Thomas is the last “Original Artist” at Water Street Studios, having started with the Batavia studio in August nearly 11 years ago. She was drawn to Water Street when her now-good friend, then-acquaintance, Sharon Sychta – a founder of the studio – told Dienst-Thomas about a space she could let her imagination and creativity run wild. That space became Water Street Studios.

Now, Dienst-Thomas continues to thrive in her art and within the unmatched community of Water Street. “On March 6, I presented 21 pieces from my last five years of work as a Graduate Student in Studio Arts focused on Metalwork, Jewelry Design, and Digital Fabrication at Northern Illinois University,” she says. “This M.A. Solo Thesis Exhibition was the culmination of five years of intense focus and discovery. Every semester I challenged myself to learn new techniques. Before graduate school I never used Computer-Aided Design and now I cannot imagine creating without it. Rhino (the CAD program we utilize) allows me to create from nothing what is in my mind. I always wanted more form and color to accompany my traditional metalsmithing and now I possess the skills to create in 3D and print in numerous materials components that I add to my metal for extremely unique work. My Professor, James Obermeier gave me just enough direction and push to allow me to research and create whatever I envisioned.”

In 2025, Dienst-Thomas will graduate from Northern Illinois University with a Master of Arts in Studio Art in Metalwork, Jewelry Design and Digital Fabrication.

local artist

LAURA LYNNE

M

ixed media artist and muralist Laura Lynne knew she wanted to be a creative since she was a young girl. “After high school I went to school for art, but then straight into the corporate world for work for the next 10 years,” she says.

“My son was born in 2012, and I was lucky to be able to stay home with him. During his naps and after bed I started working on my art again. Now, I feel so grateful when people ask what I do for a living. I can truly say, ‘I am an artist.’”

Lynne credits the birth of her son and yoga teacher training for evolving her craft, pushing her to create works that reflect the wonderment of childhood, nature and colorful fascination. Lynne studied figure drawing and photography in high school, lessons that helped build a throughline in her art based in light and value.

She moved on to University of Wisconsin Madison, then UW-Milwaukee, and spent a summer traveling around Europe, some Mediterranean countries and Egypt.

Eventually, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting and drawing.

Her life experiences and significant events helped shape the creative she is today. “A formula for my art style might be something like this: nature + magic + whimsy + color = Laura Lynne Art,” says Lynne. “I know a piece of art is finished when it ‘sparks joy’ in my heart, as Marie Kondo would say. Roald Dahl says, ‘And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.’

I strive to believe in and portray the magic.”

This year, Lynne is dedicating herself to exploring more in her art and challenging her comfort zone. “The grants I’ve been receiving for the last 4 years are expiring at the end of June, so I am going to challenge myself in 2025 to be even more disciplined and take even more risks in my business,” she says. “Already, I have a list of mural

and watercolor pet portrait commissions so that is a good start.”

Just this past January, Laura completed a mural for Rush Copley Healthcare Center in Yorkville. The scale and detail of the project was a rewarding experience for Lynne. “I hired another artist to assist, Mari Dzhelasi, and the whole project went so much faster,” she says. “It made me think back to my first few murals where I made so many rookie mistakes, like not planning out the colors first or not mixing enough of the colors beforehand and not using a projector. I’m definitely still learning, but doing the last mural really made me realize how far I’ve come and how much I’ve developed my mural painting process.”

In her career, Lynne finds that collaborative works with elementary-aged students are some of her most challenging and fulfilling endeavors. “[It] is a lot of work but so rewarding,” she says. “First, I pick a local nature theme like wetlands, coniferous forests or city wildlife.

Then, I create 6-8 art lessons based on the elements and principles of art, along with an animal or plant based on the theme. The students send me a photo of their artworks, then I size, print and cut them out and arrange them in a 3x4 foot collage. The kids love finding the art they created within the large collage. These projects take weeks to complete, but seeing the students’ excitement at the art reveal is so worth it. It’s also so rewarding to see the students grow as artists each year.”

ARTIST STATEMENT

The mixed media art and murals I create are inspired by the deep connection with nature I developed as a child yet have a colorful and whimsical twist.

Spending a lot of time in the Wisconsin wilderness and visiting family in the Colorado Rocky Mountains opened my eyes to the beauty of the natural world, birds, and wild animals. Poems, song lyrics, fairy tales, and bold poster design are other influences.

There is almost always music on while I work and often it influences my art and illustrations.

My mixed media artworks are created using paper of all kinds, a scissors, hole punch and sometimes an X-ACTO knife, which means my art studio sometimes might look like it just rained confetti. The original art has a rich, raised texture as I layer and layer the different papers with acrylic medium. Choosing the color palette is a part of my process where I pay great attention. I often gravitate towards the brightest color combinations and like to include metallic foil papers to catch the light.

here’s nothing like perusing the shelves of a local bookstore for the hidden treasures that await tucked away in the bookcases. Perhaps you’re looking for the perfect beach read for an upcoming vacation. HARVEY’S TALES IN GENEVA

THE BOOK SHOP IN BATAVIA

Tucked in downtown Geneva, the store features an outdoor patio – the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee or tea from the in-store coffee bar and jump right into reading a book. Harvey’s Book Club offers an opportunity for book-minded individuals to discuss the book selection of the month. Book club meets February through November.

Spots fill up fast so be sure to contact the store if you’re interested in joining.

For seven years, this little shop has gifted the community an opportunity to give old books a new lease on life. Every nook and cranny of the tiny store is bursting with rare books, children’s books, literature, poetry, non-fiction and fiction waiting to find new homes.

A love of books and bookshops, coupled with an even greater love of the family dog, Harvey, prompted Roxanne and Chuck Osborne to open Harvey’s Tales in their retirement years. Although their beloved pet passed away, the couple honored him by naming the store after Harvey.

They also showcase books written by local authors in Kane County.

If you enjoy browsing used books, then The Book Shop in downtown Batavia is the place for you. This cozy nook serves as a passion project for the owner who envisions a haven for people to share their mutual love of books.

On the second Sunday of the month, the store hosts an adult book discussion group. Space is limited so you’ll want to check with the store first. Even if the group is full, the website lists not only the current reading list but previous years selections since 2006. To help ease the guilt of buying another book to add to your hefty TBR pile, stop by on the first Tuesday of the month when 20% of sales go back to support community groups such as Lazarus House, Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley and HorsePower Therapeutic Riding.

ELGIN AUTHOR EARNS ACCLAIM IN STATEWIDE LITERARY CONTEST – AND AT THE LOCAL LIBRARY

or Elgin resident India Powers, there’s something special about walking into the Gail Borden Library and seeing her fantasy romance novel “Demon’s Bane” on the shelf.

Public Library in Elgin. Library staff love showcasing local writers, maintaining a shelf on the second floor where local authors can donate their books for the community to enjoy.

“Growing up I wanted to be a veterinarian, a nuclear physicist and I was always a big reader ever since I was a kid, but I never really thought I could be an author,” Powers said.

The Gail Borden Library also hosts an Annual Author Fair in the fall inviting local authors to connect with the community. Kiburg said last year featured almost 50 local authors. Additionally, she said a few years ago the library invited local children’s book authors and had about 20 authors at the featured event.

Powers isn’t just a local author, she’s the 2021 winner of the Soon To Be Famous Illinois Author Project, further boosting her work and her passion for writing.

Getting the story from her mind to paper took some work, but local resources helped her along the way.

With encouragement from her husband, she joined a Chicago-area group for romance writers. She went to her first meeting before she had even put pen to paper, or more precisely, tapped out words on the computer.

“They were very encouraging and supportive, so I started going to the meetings twice a month,” Powers explained. “I learned so much about writing, I learned about the industry.”

With a greater opportunity for self-publishing options, budding authors have new pathways to publishing. No longer does one need a literary agent and publishing house when there’s the option to self-publish and print books on demand as well as e-books too.

“It gives local authors a chance to meet, network and showcase their work. It’s a nice gathering where they can share what they’re working on,” Kiburg said.

For authors like Powers, having a peer writing group was a big help, sharing ideas, publishing tips and being able to work out writing ideas. The Gail Borden Library hosts Writers on the Fox, a monthly peer writing group for writers of all genres, where they can share work or try writing exercises.

“Any writer can attend,” Kiburg added.

As a busy mom, Powers recalled how she carried a notebook with her or brought along her laptop and worked on her manuscript during her son’s sports practices. She said she found after bedtime when the house was quiet, a good time to work on her piece.

“It might not seem like much, but if you can write an hour, 30 minutes or 15 minutes, it does add up,” Powers said.

Powers said she rewrote her manuscript at least twice,

in addition to minor changes after peer reviews. As she closed in on her piece, she hired a professional editor to help her with the manuscript.

“I wanted someone who could really help me become a better writer. I learned a lot,” Powers said.

She published the first manuscript in December 2019.

When she learned about the Soon To Be Famous Illinois Author in the Gail Borden Library newsletter she decided to enter her piece, not expecting too much recognition for her fantasy romance novel.

“Usually, people don’t take romance novels seriously,” Powers said. “I like a book that takes you on a journey to a different place and with romance, there’s a happy ending.”

When she received word she won the contest in 2021, she was surprised and excited. The Soon To Be Famous Illinois Author Project recognizes self- and indiepublished works, including adult and young adult fiction and memoirs. The entries are reviewed by a committee of library staff from across the state.

The program is accepting entries through May 31 for this year’s contest. In addition to promoting the author and the work, the contest has a small monetary prize.

Powers is working on her next manuscripts, finishing the first draft of her second book and in the writing process for a young adult fiction, which said is proving harder than her romance fantasy pieces. She also modified her first book, which is also available as an e-book, to create a “PG-13” version so her son and other young adults could enjoy it too.

Trio of professionals bring artistic flair to Kane County through a variety of media

ith how much media we consume, it can be easy to take graphic designers for granted. When we turn on the TV, we don’t think about what colors were used in an ad or how the font for the TV guide was chosen.

And yet, someone had to make those decisions.

Take this magazine you are reading for example. All the decisions from the font size to the design theme were hand-selected by our niche publications graphic designer, Julie Barichello. Through her creativity, she breathes new life into articles like this one.

“A lot of it is working those puzzle pieces together of text, photos and graphics, and then packaging it into something that is easy for readers to digest,” shares Barichello.

Julie Barichello lays out several magazines and niche publications for Shaw Media, such as Kane County Magazine and Starved Rock Country Magazine.

Her favorite moment, however, is seeing the final product. “The second it's in your hands, it's like opening a Christmas present,” Barichello said.

“I know what every single page looks like, but it looks different when it's printed. It's just a great feeling when I can finally see it at its finished stage.”

The joy of seeing the final product is also felt by screen printers like Andrew Heppner, owner of Black Cactus Print House in Batavia. Screen printers make and produce graphics on a variety of materials through a mesh screen. This manual art medium can make it difficult to recreate computerized images, but Heppner’s 12 years in the business has allowed him to find uncommon solutions.

“Make sure to design knowing what the output is going to be,” advises Heppner. “If I'm designing a poster versus a T-shirt, I have a different set of tools I bring to the table. Those little details can make a really big difference.” Heppner has expanded this mindset into Black Cactus’s newly launched marketing firm, Nothing Firm, which aims to provide art direction to small and medium-sized businesses through both physical and digital marketing.

The internet has become a hotspot for marketing, with most businesses now owning and running their own website. But these sites don’t just show up on their own; they need to be coded and designed by website designers like Randy Baum, owner of Randy Baum Design in Geneva.

When building a site, Baum emphasizes the importance of loading speed. “The majority of people who visit websites want it to load fast. No one likes to wait for anything, Andrew Heppner so the speed and performance of your website is prints designs on a variety critical. It's also something that Google will rank of materials, including your website on.” Through various lines of code paper stocks and and design tweaks, Baum can optimize his client’s fabrics, through Black websites and bring them to the top of the search Cactus Print House. list, a feat that can be difficult to obtain if not for his online prowess.

The skills of each of these individuals is nuanced and requires years of training, but to see their work come to fruition makes it all feel worth it. It’s time to raise the curtain and acknowledge the person behind the screen, behind the art, and behind the page.

ou don’t have to visit an art gallery to gather inspiration or up your culture quotient.

In fact, it’s possible to enjoy original works and soak up the sun at the same time. Kane County is awash in community art.

One venue to check out is the St. Charles Public Art Tour where you can explore murals, sculptures, and other outdoor works all year. Install the Travel St. Charles app on a smart phone to find all the locations. The Art in Public Places website lists all 180 pieces, and there’s a self-guided audio walking tour, including

an electronic map and description of some of the pieces. QR code signage is installed for all art pieces on the tour.

Included is the annual Sculptures in the Park exhibit in Mt. St. Mary Park.

Memorial Sculpture, by Trygve Rovelstad, a tribute to the original pioneers who settled in Elgin. LAUGHTER ABOUNDS AT THE COMEDY VAULT IN BATAVIA

he Comedy Vault’s weekly open mic Mondays are filled with surprises and uncertainties.

You might see a seasoned comedian working on their latest material. You also could see someone take the stage for the first time ever. The only way of knowing is to come out to Batavia and see and laugh for yourself.

If you do choose to treat your case of the Mondays with comedy, there’s a darn good chance you’ll see Wheaton’s Jack Baker among the 40 comics.

Celebrating his 15th year in the business, Baker uses the open mic to work on new material. He also recorded his debut comedy special, “Jack Baker’s Disease” at the Comedy Vault in 2023.

“I wanted to do standup since the seventh grade,” he says. “After seeing Mitch Hedberg on Comedy Central, that’s what I wanted to do.”

Baker has performed at countless open mics, but few compared to the Comedy Vault.

“It’s truly one of the best clubs in the country,” he says.

“It’s right there in the suburbs so it’s nice for me being

in Wheaton. Some of the national headliners come through and say how great of a club it is which speaks a lot about Liv (Valaitis, the owner and director of business development and operations of The Comedy Vault) and the staff there. It’s one of the best open mics.”

Oswego’s Elmer Jaeger who performs as Elmer Jaegermeister, isn’t a comedian per se but he plays one at the Comedy Vault.

Looking for a different date night experience, Jaeger and his wife took advantage of this free event with a two-item (food or drink) minimum.

“That progressed to going every week with friends to judge the comics on how well they improved their jokes week over week,” he says. “Admittedly, sometimes it was like watching a train wreck. One of the guys said, ‘When are you getting up there' and the idea was born.”

Jaegermeister has gotten on stage several times. His buddy, Adam Harlow, has performed about a dozen times.

and there is camaraderie with everyone who gets up,” Harlow says. “The first time I honestly couldn’t figure out how to hold the mic, but other than that the crowd was receptive and encouraging. I think it’s an ideal venue for someone who wants to get up without too much pressure.”

Jaegermeister, who has won the pie eating contest at WGN Morning News at its past two St. Patrick’s Day parties, acknowledges he was nervous when he made his stand-up debut last spring.

“It was nerve-wracking, bright stage lights and all,” he says. “But the time flies by and I always felt better after doing it.’

For the time being, the summer fun in Aurora has been relocated to Wilder Park right in the heart of downtown while there are numerous shows scheduled throughout neighboring communities within Kane County.

Featuring a lengthy list of locally and nationally acclaimed DJs and musicians, the A-Town House Music Fest is bringing the party back to Aurora on June 14.

ith a passion for the restaurant business and a love of great food, Bob Karas has launched his 17th dining establishment with Squire Ale House in Campton Hills.

“I love this business. It’s a passion,” Karas said.

Karas was raised in the business for the last 50 years, recalling how his father Paul and his Uncle George launched their first restaurant in 1974.

Karas’s restaurant portfolio includes Rookies with locations in St. Charles, Geneva, Elgin, Huntley, Crystal Lake, Hoffman Estates and Alexander’s Café in Elgin and St. Charles. His restaurant group also owns Village Squire Restaurants which include locations in Dundee, Crystal Lake, McHenry, South Elgin and the newest Squire on the Square in Woodstock.

Managing multiple locations in the Kane, McHenry corridor of Illinois means a lot of time on the road for Karas, but he’s quick to point out it takes a team of great people to make it work. This includes the staff to

“I have a lot of good people. My biggest asset is my people,” Karas said.

For Karas, the vision of the restaurant, the design, construction are the “easy part” but the real work is the daily grind, managing daily operations and of course, keeping the menu delicious and enticing.

He particularly credits his family (partner Eloisa Gomez and their children) for their patience when work claims his time, as well as his sisters Eleni and Despina, corporate chef Grant Werner, operations manager Mike Mackin, Shelby Correa and all business partners, managers and chefs.

The latest restaurant is a bit of a sentimental project, as he recalls visiting the location under its prior ownership when he was in the mood to let someone else cook for him, adding the restaurant has the best rotisserie chicken.

“It was a great location and I know it was very popular,” Karas said. “I loved the ambiance and the rotisserie chicken.”

In taking over the location, Karas and his team had their work ahead of them.

And out of sentiment, Karas insisted on having the delicious rotisserie chicken too.

“I’m very hands-on with the kitchen and the menu,” he added. “I love what I do and adding new employees and customers to our family.”

Pottawatomie Garden Club’s roots go deep Explore stunning landscapes during June garden walk Pottawatomie Garden Club feature sponsored by Heinz Brothers Greenhouse & Garden Center

F

or 97 years, the Pottawatomie Garden Club has been beautifying the city of St. Charles. The club’s repertoire has expanded over its near-century to include not only numerous plantings, awards and college scholarships, but also its famous garden walk.

With a current membership of 114 community service-minded volunteers, the club has been involved in planting flowers across town, and planting trees in local parks to honor deceased members. It also bestows an annual landscape commendation award to a local business, and annual scholarships to students pursuing studies in horticulture and the environment.

But it’s the garden walk that provides the funds so the nonprofit organization can accomplish its philanthropic goals.

“Our walk is held every other year,” says Linda Hefferin, who co-chairs this year’s event with fellow members Luann Zanzola, and Debby Foote. “This is our fundraiser. We are all volunteers. This is how we support our scholarships as well as sustain all of our other service-related events.” The garden club partners with local businesses in order to carry off the event. “There are multiple locations where tickets can be purchased, as well as on our website, at www.pottagardenclub.org,” adds Hefferin. Tickets are $25 presale and $30 the day of the walk, which is slated for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28.

This year’s walk includes seven homes – four west of the Fox River and three on the east side. “We have a variety of formal and prairie woodland-type gardens, including a native garden that is certified by The Conservation Foundation,” notes Hefferin.

Two members' homes are included in the walk this year. One is also the site of the walk’s annual boutique “where we sell a large selection of garden-related items at very reasonable prices,” says Hefferin. “We’ll have garden art, lawn tools, and decorative pots. The boutique will also be where we have our plant sale, plants donated by our members, as well as

by Midwest Groundcovers, a local business.”

Hefferin says the home gardens “are going to be so exciting. They include waterfalls, ponds, fire pits, and natural hardscapes. We even have homes that have goats and chickens.

One of them has a free little library.” Expect to see pollinator gardens, herb gardens and vegetable gardens, “as well as all the delightful plantings that homeowners have,” says Hefferin, who adds that, while some will be very familiar to visitors, like hostas, coral bells, peonies and irises, others will be a little less familiar to most gardeners, such as gas plants and firethorn shrubs. “There will be some very cool, interesting, colorful types of plants and bushes and trees that I think will catch the attention of many of our attendees,” says Hefferin.

Gardens range from small in-town lots to those with acreage. “I really like the diversity of types of gardens,” says Hefferin. “It’s interesting to see people get inspired by different things.”

Each home will have two club members and a master gardener, as well as homeowners onsite to answer any questions and highlight special plantings. “Most of the homes have a variety of garden areas, including herb gardens, vegetable gardens, and sun and shade gardens,” says Hefferin. “There’s even a chicken coop!”

ne reason yoga stands out in the fitness world is that it is adaptable to truly every person, regardless of age, ability, weight, gender or injury. This is great news! It means we all can practice yoga — even you! Unfortunately, not all yoga teachers make their classes accessible to all.

Here are five things to look for to find a teacher who will make you feel safe and comfortable: 1. OFFERS MULTIPLE POSE OPTIONS In the yoga world, we call these “variations.”

Offering multiple variations ensures everyone can find yoga poses that work for them. For instance, I offer multiple variations of downward dog to accommodate lots of different abilities and needs.

No variation is the “right” one. Instead, I encourage you to find a version of the pose that best works for you. This makes the class feel custom-fit to you and keeps you safe as you try new things.

2. ASKS ABOUT YOUR NEEDS AND CONCERNS Before class begins, I ask each person about any needs or concerns they may have. This is when I get to ask new people if they have any injuries or other needs they want me to know about. This allows me

to customize the class for who’s there. For instance, if your knee is tender, I can keep us off our knees or offer other ways to keep your knee happy. This not only makes people feel seen, but also safe.

3. EMPOWERS YOU TO TRUST YOUR BODY You are the expert on your body — not the teacher. In my yoga classes, I have one rule: We only do yoga that feels good in our bodies. If it doesn’t feel right, it’s not right, so let’s find something else. This rule encourages you to trust and connect with your body, which is one of the key outcomes I want to see in my yoga students.

4. GIVES CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS THROUGHOUT CLASS During the first yoga class I ever attended, the teacher moved so quickly and gave such little instruction, that I ended up hurting myself trying to keep up. It was a nightmare! This is the reason that I provide clear instructions for each and every pose, ensuring that you’re never lost during class.

We move slowly, one pose at a time, so you know exactly what to do. This not only makes you more comfortable in class, but also helps keep you safe.

5. ENCOURAGES THE USE OF PROPS “Props” is the fancy term we give to the yoga blocks, blankets and bolsters (big pillows) that we use in yoga class. Using these tools in the right way can create more comfort and ease as you practice. In my classes, I ensure all students have a variety of props so you have everything you need. Plus, I demonstrate with the props so you know how to use them.

F

Parental thoughts on teens taking the wheel – literally and figuratively

or the record – just to be clear – it's her mother that is scared, not me.

I, on the other hand, am telling others that I am not upset about hanging up one of my hats.

When we become parents, there are some aspects of parenthood no amount of warning can prepare you for.

Take, for instance, the amount of time you will spend answering the same questions, over and over.

We're not even talking about asking for permission.

There, every parent should be prepared for the constant negotiation, shifting stratagems and conniving deployed to wear down even the most determined dad or mom.

Rather, in this instance, we're discussing genuine requests for factual information or for confirmation of a belief.

Some examples? "Daddy, is the blue whale the biggest animal?" "Why is the sky blue?" "Did you marry mommy because you love her?" "Are you the strongest man in the world?"

Yes, you've already told your little people the answer.

They have acquired the information. They may have even acted upon the information. Yet, they ask again.

And again. And again.

And eventually, you may even look up the information with them, if for no other reason than the repeated nature of the inquiries have made you begin to doubt your answers yourself.

Other unexpected parental aspects of parenthood? The amount of snot.

Yes, you know going in that kids are mucus-factories.

But until you are actually dealing with a toddler suffering from some kind of cold virus and an older kid suffering through seasonal allergies simultaneously, you just have no idea how such a little nose can pour out so much yellow viscous slime – and rack up the accompanying monthly Kleenex bill.

Another? The number of hats you will need to wear.

Of course, I'm not necessarily referring to actual physical hats (although those results may vary based on your commitment to haberdashery.) Here, we're discussing "hats" as metaphor for "all the different multi-faceted jobs parents must perform in an ever shifting grouping every day for so many years."

One day, you only need to worry about making sure your needs have been addressed amid the responsibilities of a full-time job. The next? You are suddenly thrust into a never-ending series of moonlighting gigs: Chef, butler, janitor, mechanic, gardener, EMT, records clerk, administrative assistant, concierge, and for those of us living in less urban environments, chauffeur.

There's no escape from it. And there is really no way to actually prepare for it. It just is what it is, and it is left to all of us to adapt or ... well, you know. Metaphorically, of course But at a certain point in parenthood, those demands begin to ebb a bit. Eventually, your kids begin to take on household chores (and do them well enough that we don't need to do them again after they go to bed).

Perhaps they learn to cook. Or quietly tend to their own "ouchies." Perhaps they become mature and responsible enough (we hope) to keep track of their own upcoming assignments and events, without needing constant reminders from anyone but Siri and her sistren.

And perhaps they reach that suburban (and exurban) rite of passage: the date on which a state official hands them a plastic card that says they are entitled to legally operate a motor vehicle without an adult in the passenger seat.

Suddenly, that parent that had formerly been required to be available for so many of those aforementioned upcoming events – classes, rehearsals, practices and other assorted gatherings at which the young person's

attendance is requested or required – finds themselves in a new position.

It is an aspect of parenthood for which they are entirely unprepared.

The moment the young person whom you could swear just a few seconds ago was asking you if you are the strongest man alive, whose nose you were just wiping and whose skinned knee you were just cleaning, is now asking you for the keys to the car to meet her friends at the movies or the skating rink or a practice or rehearsal or whatever.

And in that moment, you feel it. It's a sensation you know has always been there, but was shoved to the back of the mind, buried under a mountain of "hats" and their associated tasks: The existential dread of knowing all your work as a parent is about to be put to the ultimate test, as they drive away from the house for the first time without you or some other trusted parental proxy, and must sink or swim, (almost) all by themselves, in the big blue world.

For us, that moment is now.

And for the record, just to be clear, by "us," I mean we are talking about her mother here.

Certainly not me.

TRIBULATIONS Part IV of the history of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, 1925-2025

I

t was one of those ideas that was obvious as soon as it was offered.

No one seemed to know what to do with thousands of miles of railroad tracks that were abandoned in favor of highways after World War II. The obvious solution came in the early 1960s, and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County was among the first to take advantage of it.

May Theilgaard Watts, a Morton Arboretum Naturalist, had the radically obvious idea. What if these rails could be turned into trails? “If we have courage and foresight,” & FAMILY MAY 2025 42 LIFESTYLE

Watts wrote in an editorial for the Chicago Tribune in 1963, “then we can create from this strip a proud resource.” She regaled readers with what the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin Electric (CA&E) rail line could be, if converted to a multi-use trail: “The path lies ahead, curving around a hawthorn tree, then proceeding under the shade of a forest of sugar maple trees, dripping into a thicket of wild plum, to straighten out for a long stretch of prairie, tall grass prairie, with Big Bluestem and Blazing Star and Silphium and Goldenrod.”

One of the many people inspired by Watts was a Batavia small business owner with a hefty mustache and a hearty laugh: Phil Elfstrom. During his over 20 years in elected Mary Theilgaard Watts office as Kane County Board chairman from 1971 to 1982 and president of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County from 1983 to 1990, Elfstrom led the acquisition and development of about 80 miles of biking and hiking trails, most from abandoned rail lines.

Some knew him as “a political powerhouse who knew how to get things done” while others believed he had a “callous disregard for a community you are elected to serve.” No one can dispute, however, that Elfstrom championed many new recreational options in Kane County including trails, golf, and minor league baseball. These new recreation opportunities were not

welcomed by everyone, however, leading to a political firestorm that reached all the way to the governor’s office.

The District began to assemble an impressive 80 miles of its own public trails beginning in 1977 and the acquisition of the Great Western Railroad from the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles to Sycamore. Paul Clusen, a commissioner of the District at the time, remembered the opening of the trail in May of 1980 as a significant turning point in the history of the District. “The thing that really shook things up was when the Great Western Railroad was abandoned and [Commissioner] Phil Elfstrom decided they ought to buy that for a bike trail… And it really made the Forest Preserve a lot different after that, I think.”

Adding trails to Kane County was not the only “thing that shook things up.” A zealous baseball fan, Elfstrom was determined to bring professional baseball to Kane County. The idea was unprecedented. No minor league baseball team at the time was located within the same media market as a major league team. Kane County would be within the same market as two!

To attract a team, the District needed a stadium. The first location considered was directly west of the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles, which the

1 city vigorously opposed. Undeterred, Elfstrom turned to Geneva’s Settler’s Hill Landfill, securing over $2 million from Waste Management and $1.2 million in zero-interest bonds held by the Kane County Enterprise Fund, which collected landfill user fees, to build the stadium at the former landfill. According to Elfstrom, the stadium was built “without going to taxpayer support.” The public/private partnership became an example of how a former landfill can be converted to a new use.

Fox River Trail, however. To complete one section in St. Charles, the District’s commissioners in January of 1989 voted unanimously to buy about one acre each from 26 riverfront homeowners on the west bank of the Fox River.

The stadium broke ground in November of 1989, and the Class A ball club from Wausau, Wisconsin began its first season as the Kane County Cougars on April 13, 1991. A decade later, the Cougars broke the Class A record for season attendance with over half of a million fans.

The owners did not want to sell a narrow strip of their backyards. Because of the eminent domain clause in the Downstate Forest Preserve Act, the District could force them to sell at the appraised value by arguing their land was needed for public use. The St. Charles property owners protested and in April of 1989 the District’s commissioners withdrew their offer.

Later that summer, a law limiting the District’s use of eminent domain was signed by Illinois Governor James Thompson.

Meanwhile, the District continued acquiring land for public trails. By the late 1980s, one could nearly traverse the length of Kane County, along the fabulous Fox River, from Algonquin to Aurora. It was not always possible to use former rail lines to complete the

Elfstrom’s vision to increase the recreation offerings of the District was bold in the view of some, reckless in the view of others. The results, however, are undeniable. Today, thousands of residents and tourists enjoy biking, walking, and running the Illinois Prairie

estled along the Fox River, Pottawatomie Park in downtown St. Charles offers something for everyone!

Visitors may choose a relaxing experience with a stroll through the native plant garden or an active adventure playing mini-golf, golf, tennis, pickleball, swimming, boating and more. Young visitors often head straight for one of two playgrounds in the park, including the sensory playground.

As one of the oldest parks in the state, established in 1911, Pottawatomie Park has and continues to provide fishing areas, trails for a leisurely walk or rigorous jog, and several picnicking opportunities with and without rentable pavilions. New this year is the expansion of the historic pavilion showcasing how it originally appeared a century ago.

“It’s truly a great park,” said Kate Miller,

assistant superintendent for recreation with the St. Charles Park District.

Beautiful in every season, it’s the late spring through early fall when park visitation increases as the seasonal facilities open.

Already in full swing is the nine-hole Pottawatomie Golf Course. As the most beautiful public course in the Fox Valley area, green fees are $22 per day. Tee time reservations must be made by calling 630-584-8356 up to a week in advance. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or just picked up the game, the layout at Pottawatomie offers a challenge, but keeps the game fun for all skill levels.

Beginning May 3, the Riverview Miniature Golf Course opens on weekends only for the season. For Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11, moms can enjoy a free game of minigolf with

a child’s admission. Come June through August when the course opens for daily admission, there’s Putt & Save specials almost every day.

“Friday Family Nights are very popular with ice cream treats for each round of mini-golf purchased, though Date Night with a reduced rate on Saturdays is a close second,” Miller said.

“A lot of kids like Treasure Tuesday when choosing a prize out of Stanley’s (the mascot) treasure box," she added.

Besides a variety of hot eats and cool treats from the mini-golf refreshment stand, visitors may rent a kayak or pedal boat and venture out to the middle of the river to see the area from a completely different perspective. Pedal boats seat four people. Life jackets are included with every rental. For a small

Pottawatomie Park is home to the yearround community center with an indoor gymnasium, preschool wing, dance and fitness studios, and multipurpose rooms for a robust choice of age-appropriate programs including art, fencing, summer camps and more. A

s a veterinary surgeon, I spend a lot of time focused on healing using my skill with my hands and a scalpel — but there’s also an art to helping pets recover and thrive after the surgery is completed. I wanted to share how creativity can play a powerful role in your pet’s well-being, especially during recovery.

please be sure to talk with your primary care veterinarian and the surgeon before engaging in these activities. There are times where care must be taken to allow healing to adequately occur, and under no circumstances should you start exercising your pet without consulting the veterinarians overseeing your pet’s care.

Whether your pet is bouncing back from surgery or simply deserves some engaging fun on a warm weekend day, here are a few surgeon-approved ways to bring enrichment and joy into their world.

Continue to use the anti-lick device recommended (e-collar, body sleeve, lick sleeve) according to your post-surgery instructions. Nothing ruins a smooth recovery quicker, than a trip to the emergency room at 2 a.m. when your pet decides to chew open their incision.

While I may approve of some of these ideas,

DIY ENRICHMENT TOYS

For dogs: Try hiding treats in a rolled-up towel or making a homemade snuffle mat to encourage natural foraging.

For cats: Use toilet paper rolls as food puzzles or hide treats in tissue paper inside a cardboard box.

These simple toys stimulate your pet’s brain and help ease restlessness and anxiety. This is especially important for those on post-op rest. Prior to using the treats make sure that your primary vet is consulted to make sure that the extra treats or activity is not contraindicated with the surgery that was performed. Be sure to not allow your pet to move around too much. In addition to licking, excessive movement can result in incisional complications.

A corgi sniffs and seeks treats in an interactive food puzzle. Food puzzles are a gently activity for pets recovering from an operation. See suggestions above for homemade food puzzles for dogs and cats.

HEALING THROUGH THE LENS

Take daily photos of your pet’s surgical site (if applicable) to track progress.

Even better, document their journey with fun milestone photos — like their “last day in the cone!”

It’s both practical and heartwarming.

As a mobile veterinary surgeon, pictures also allow me to maintain contact with my patients, so that I can know if there are any issues with healing.

MUSIC THERAPY FOR PETS Calming music can reduce stress in both dogs and cats. While all pets respond differently to music, studies have shown that classical, reggae and soft rock are the best for our pets.

Classical music in recovery areas—it works! Create a quiet, cozy space at home with soft lighting and soothing sounds. My dogs love it (even my deaf dog loves the feel of music).

Pet-Safe Playlist: Relax & Recover Here’s a calming playlist to help your pet (and maybe you!) de-stress: • “Weightless” – Marconi Union • “Clair de Lune” – Debussy • “Nocturne in E-flat” – Chopin • “Air on the G String” – Bach • “Spa Music for Pets” – Pet Music World • “Lullaby for Cats” – RelaxMyCat • “Through a Dog’s Ear” – Lisa Spector & Joshua Leeds Pro Tip: Keep volume low (no louder than an alarm clock) and play it consistently during calm times to help your pet associate the sound with relaxation. Avoid music with random beats and loud percussion instruments as these can agitate instead of relaxing your pet.

MAKE ART, MAKE MEMORIES

Some of my clients over the years have created artwork to honor their pet’s recovery — painted paw prints, digital portraits or simple framed photos. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate resilience and create lasting memories between you and your pet.

Even journaling about your pet’s journey can be a helpful outlet. Another reason to journal is to help make sure that healing is progressing as expected. If there are any hiccups the journal can be used to help you, and your veterinarian determine any cause or when the issue may have arisen.

GENTLE PLAYTIME = PURPOSEFUL RECOVERY

Recovery doesn’t mean zero fun. Try: • Light wand play with cats • Short training sessions with dogs (sit, touch, look) • Scent games using safe, veterinarianapproved treats These small, calm activities offer stimulation without overexerting healing pets. Please be sure to talk to the surgeon BEFORE playing or increasing activity with your pet (see a theme occurring?)

Is there a risk of STAGFLATION? Although the economic condition is possible, the forecast doesn't look probable & CIVIC MAY 2025 50 BUSINESS

H

aving a monthly deadline for this article is a blessing and a curse, especially when there is significant market volatility and fast-breaking news. Announced tariffs significantly higher than expected have jolted markets around the world, with headlines coming so quickly that trying to chime in on many of today’s topics will likely make for stale reading a month from now. Trying to stay relevant often results in my pressing the deadline to the last moment before submission, which at some point is going to turn poor Tricia W. at Shaw Media prematurely grey. (Please accept this as my monthly apology, Tricia!)

With that in mind, let’s spend a few moments discussing stagflation and why those who lived through this environment in the 1970s and early ‘80s may still be scarred from doing so.

Stagflation is an economic condition characterized by slowing economic growth, high unemployment and rising prices (inflation) simultaneously. I’m old enough to remember the stress on our family farm when OPEC’s oil embargo in the 1970s resulted in a painful jump in energy prices. This resulted in a dramatic increase in production costs across many U.S. industries while simultaneously reducing economic output.

Then-Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, determined to reign in inflation, raised the prime lending rate to 21%. Inflation also rose through the decade, peaking at 14% in 1980.

Like many small businesses that have seasonality as part of their business model, farmers often borrow in the spring and then pay off that operating loan in the fall after the harvest. This spike in borrowing costs impacted our family’s ability for other economic activity that would have otherwise been the norm – especially with prices inflating so rapidly. You can sense the ripple effect. Eventually the U.S. economy emerged from stagflation in the early 1980s, but not without significant economic carnage.

Stagflation can be a tricky condition to solve and has undoubtedly caused many a Federal Reserve chairperson nightmares worrying about the possibility of stagflation happening during their watch. Policy solutions for slow growth tend to worsen inflation, and vice versa. That makes stagflation hard to fight.

The Federal Reserve’s dual mandate of low inflation and full employment can be a difficult enough balancing act. The tariffs announced on April 2 may make this mandate even more difficult and have prompted many economists to wonder aloud if an economic recession may be triggered or even worse, stagflation.

Our position has been that the U.S. economy would have to slow down to a rate of growth of less than1.0% of GDP for several years while inflation would have to increase past 5% and the rate of unemployment would have to increase past 5.5% to trigger stagflation. Although at this time our team feels this scenario is a possibility and not a probability, the longer significantly higher tariffs remain in place, the more concerned we will be.
