World War II veteran among those at STC ceremony

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Holding an umbrella over her head to protect herself from Monday’s driving rain, Geneva resident Rennie Barnaba held up a sign to thank members of the military as they marched down Main Street as part of the St. Charles Memorial Day Parade.

“We are the land of the free because of the brave,” stated the sign. Barnaba said several members of her family have served in the military.

“I think this day kind of makes us remember why we have our freedom, because of those who have fought for us,” she said.

Barnaba got the thumbs up from those military members marching in the parade, which she said made her feel good about her efforts.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America.

The St. Charles Memorial Day Parade went ahead despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions. The rain forced organizers to move a ceremony from the Freedom Shrine along the Fox River to a location indoors – St. Charles Fire Station 1.

During his remarks, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina honored former St. Charles High School student Charles Cooper, who was killed in Operation Desert Storm in February 1991. Cooper was one of 14 military personnel from Illinois killed in the conflict.

“God bless you, Chuck,” Rogina said. “We honor all of our fallen soldiers and their commitment to our country.”

Among those in attendance at the Memorial Day ceremony was World War II veteran and former St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent John Wredling. Wredling Middle School in St. Charles is named after him.

“It’s very exciting,” he said.

Civil War re-enactor Anthony Catella marched with the 8th Illinois Calvary in the parade. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. “I grew up loving parades and military ceremonies and honoring our country and those who served,” Catella said.

Catella said he wasn’t bothered by the rain, saying “it’s nothing compared to what the real Civil War soldiers endured.”

Catella’s uniform caught the attention of those attending the parade and Memorial Day ceremony.

“It’s fun educating the public,” he said. “And you get to feel what it was like to be a soldier of a particular period.”

The hidden pitfalls of owning your own business Working with 285 businesses of varying sizes during the past year has given me a new perspective on the successes, failures, obstacles and blessings of business ownership.

I have seen the entrepreneur experience success for the first time, and the seasoned veteran lose that big client.

The following are some of the hidden pitfalls of owning your own business.

• The whole package – All of your friends tell you that you have the best spaghetti sauce and you should open your own restaurant. Hold the meatball!

Although the myth of 9 out of 10 restaurants fail in the first year has been busted, the truth still is scary at about 60 percent failure. Think about finding a store front, staffing, finances, state regulations, contracts ... and the list goes on and on.

• Delegating – OK, so you have a great idea for a business and you know yours is going to be the best. Chances are, you are a control freak, and that’s OK. But you need to let other people do some of the work.

If you cannot afford to hire staff, you can’t afford to own a business. Virtual staffing is an affordable option, and they can do some of the paperwork for you. They can even do marketing for you. Identify your weaknesses and find skilled

• Paperwork – You need a road map for your success.

That road map starts with a strong foundation for the road.

All of this is going to sound boring, but that road is paved with policies and procedures, including a mission and vision statement, the “must haves” and the “can’t haves.” From how often you have to report your sales to the state, to whether your employee can have a beard, these are things you need to write down. This will help you be proactive instead of reactive, essential for success.

• Identify your sweet spot – Who is your ideal customer?

Find them and target them.

Believe it or not, some people are never going to buy your product. Why spend the money marketing to them? Stay focused.

• Be the expert – Create an online brand that portrays your excellence. You want people to come to you because they heard you are “the guy.” Start by networking and getting

your face out in the public eye.

Tell stories about things you have done and people you have helped with your product or service. Create a regular blog or at least use social media to share industry info. People buy from people. And if you are the expert, referrals will be your best friend.

Friends don’t let friends make bad business decisions.

At the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, we have lots of friends that can help you be successful. Start off with a membership in your local chamber. Chambers help you on your journey through educational seminars, peer relationship development and creating an online presence. Then work with your local SBDC – small business development center.

They offer free advice and help walk you through the process from starting a business to business growth and development. SCORE (a nonprofit organization) provides mentors that are experts in your field that have been there, done that.

As always, shop local and shop often.

STC Fine Art Show delights all ages in 17th year

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The 17th Annual St. Charles Fine Art Show’s first day Saturday was busy from the minute it opened, said Sue McDowell, the event’s committee chair.

“Everything was wonderful; the crowd was fantastic,” McDowell said Saturday afternoon.

The show, which ran through Sunday afternoon, featured work from about 100 juried artists, including paintings, jewelry, photography and more along and near Riverside Avenue in downtown St. Charles.

The show is an annual Downtown St. Charles Partnership event.

Kimber Fiebiger, a Minneapolis-based bronze and metal sculptor, said she had great crowds and reception Saturday, her first time showing at the

event.

Fiebiger said she learned about the show after being part of the St. Charles Park Foundation-sponsored Sculpture in the Park program. Her Mr. Eggwards sculpture in 2013 became part of a permanent display at Mt. St. Mary Park in St. Charles.

Fiebiger’s sculptures were a highlight for Chicago resident Bryon Lucero. He was at the show with his fiancée, Nilda, and his son, Kyle, 15, because one of his friends is in the band Trio Life, which performed at the show Saturday.

She said she embraces that role, whether it’s outdoors at the Blackberry Township Cemetery or, as it was on Monday, forced by weather conditions to be indoors at the American Legion Hall in downtown Elburn.

After listing the names, she looked out at a crowd that included many young people, including Scouts, and thanked people for listening, adding “it’s important even for the youngest of these Scouts” to hear those names. It was one of the traditions in effect at Monday’s ceremony in Elburn. Also, Tammy Osborne read “In Flanders Fields.” Village President Dave Anderson delivered a speech driving home the importance of American soldiers throughout history. Acknowl-

edging he perhaps was “picking on the French,” Anderson talked of how those in other countries should be grateful to those in the U.S. military.

Bob Britz introduced the Kaneland Harter Middle School eighth-grade band and its director, Rebecca Anderson. The band performed several songs at the event. Britz also honored those who spent time preparing the cemetery for the event, even though it was moved indoors and away from the traditional site.

Donald Glenn Castenson, 89, of Sycamore, IL died peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2015.

He was born on January 28, 1926, in Sycamore, Illinois to Esmond & Edith (Johnson) Castenson. Donald married the love of his life, Doris Williams on March 1, 1947. They spent 66 devoted years together before she passed on March 23, 2013.

Donald is survived by his two daughters, Christi Castenson of Sycamore and Donna (Michael) Sauber of Virgil; grandchildren, Katie (John) Duraski, Addie (Dustin) Storm, Michael Paul (Allison) Sauber, and Drew (Roxana) Castenson; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Ethan Storm; Jack, Harlee, and Harrison Duraski; and Lydia Sauber; several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents; wife, Doris; brother, Ralph Castenson; and sister, Betty Brown.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2015, in Salem Lutheran Church,

McDowell said other attendees have suggested vendors, as well. Part of the purpose of the show is to get people to patronize the nearby restaurants, some of which are a half-block from the show, she said. She said Starbucks, 101 E. Main St., St. Charles, next to the event ended up offering free cups of water from its front counter to

the show’s attendees.

“If we improve every year, we’ve met our goal,” McDowell said.

St. Charles resident April Luther said she enjoys coming to the art show with her husband, Brad, and daughter, Reagan, 3, because it’s so close to home. On Saturday, she bought a canvas painting of a giraffe and duck for Reagan by artist Melvin McGee of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The Luthers also took Reagan to the show’s feature tent presented by All Things Art Studio, 1106 W. Main St., St. Charles. Studio owner Erin Liv-

ermore had children paint individual tiles that will be used to form a collaborative mural for display at a to-be-determined location in downtown St. Charles this summer.

At the end of summer, the mural will be returned to the studio and magnetized to become an interchangeable, interactive feature there, Livermore said.

“It’s to great to have something like this for the parents,” Livermore said of her hands-on workshops at the show. “We pride ourselves on having really great teachers and many fun programs.”

Honk if you like sticker-style politics

By STEPHEN CARTER Bloomberg News The other day I spotted an arresting bumper sticker: “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted for the Other Guy.” Unlike so many similar decals, it bore no hint of which “other guy” was under discussion. Just blue words on a plain white background.

The driver might have been a Republican angry at Barack Obama, but the sticker was so weathered that she might just as well have been a Democrat angry at George W. Bush. Or the message might have been generic, like the fan who wears both teams’ colors to the big game, intended to cover all contingencies.

Whatever the driver intended to convey, the effect was to remind me of how frustrated we children were by our father’s refusal to allow bumper stickers on the family car – and why, looking back, he might have had a point.

Think about how a bumper sticker works. Through the words plastered on the back of the car, the driver in front proclaims that she has been places I haven’t, that his child has done things mine hasn’t, that her religion is better than mine, that his atheism is better than my religion, that she loves – sorry, that she hearts – her sports team or her alma mater or her cat.

All of this is innocuous if occasionally annoying.

The trouble arises when the bumper sticker offers a message about politics.

Sometimes the messages are clever, whether or not one shares the sentiment (one that sticks in my mind is “I’ll Keep My Laws Off Your Body If You’ll Keep Your Laws Off

My Money”) but more often they run toward solemn silliness (“U.S. Supreme Koch,” for example). But, clever or silly, the assertion is squeezed into a space so small that it cannot possibly offer an actual argument.

The driver wants to force his views upon me, but is determinedly uninterested in mine. A bumper sticker might state a belief, but it doesn’t invite question or debate. Whatever the sticker purports to convey, its subtext is this: “Here’s what I think, and I don’t give two hoots what you think.” A bumper sticker, in short, is a metaphor for what ails our democracy.

I don’t know that my father had this in mind in his stubborn determination to keep our bumpers pristine, but he always proclaimed the values of tolerance, reflection and thoughtful disagreement.

In politics, he hated slogans and appeals to emotion.

Even the ordinary upbeat campaign message – “Vote for Kennedy” – seemed to bother him on some level. He compared bumper stickers to graffiti. Maybe he had reason.

Nowadays, the function that was previously served by bumper stickers has arguably moved online. At least with Twitter and Facebook, one can try to argue back. But only a little. More and more of our politics is dominated by the tools of emotion and slogan. Fewer and fewer of us seem to care what others think. Which is another way of saying that maybe Dad was right all along.

To the Editor: Forty-six years ago, I returned to Illinois from my active duty service, which included Vietnam, only to be met by jeers and accusations such as “baby killer” when I wore my uniform.

Today, some American citizens are treating our police force even worse, and we should all find that intolerable.

Our police, and I would include fire and paramedics, are on the front lines of keeping all of us protected and safe.

Think of their ultimate sacrifice in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. Think of the many who die or are maimed in the line of duty. These men and women have life-threatening jobs and carry them out with dignity and professionalism.

Our media has been pointing out the Fergusons and Baltimores and New Yorks – and many citizens have found

police guilty by accusation, and then require them to prove their innocence. This is not justice. It is mob mentality.

Let me ask you this: Have you heard of the Kendall County sheriff’s deputies who found a disabled man on a sidewalk in an electric wheelchair with a dead battery, and manually pushed him home about a half mile? Have you heard of my friend who dropped dead in Bristol, but due to the heroic and speedy effort of a policeman rendering CPR – and paramedics giving him two big jolts from a defibrillator – brought him back to life? Both these events happened recently.

Let us all join together, and

– whenever we see a first responder – tell them thank you for their service. Let those of us who have small children teach them to respect our police and first responders, and to do as instructed by them.

All my experiences with law enforcement have been positive, even when I received a few traffic tickets. Just as our country has turned around with attitudes toward military personnel since Vietnam, we should start a movement around this country to do the same with law enforcement and first responders.

Knights quash Warriors’ rally

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland baseball team had a simple strategy for the top of the seventh in its Class 3A Hampshire Regional play-in game Monday – reliever Steven Limbrunner would retire the first three Wheaton Academy batters to win the game.

The Warriors had other ideas – stage a rally for a come-from-behind win.

Kaneland prevailed, 9-8, but not before Wheaton Academy scored two runs and had the tying and winning runs on base.

The Knights (20-12) advance to the first Hampshire regional semifinal game, facing Burlington Central at the host school on Wednesday.

Kaneland held a 9-6 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Luke Kram opened the inning with a single to right off of Limbrunner, who came on in relief of starting pitcher Matt O’Sullivan in the sixth inning.

The right-handed senior retired Luis Ramos on a fly out to right field and struck out Christian Ebeling. Bryce Sandberg, the next batter, went to a full count before drawing a walk.

Wheaton Academy’s Brett Albaugh followed with a double to right center that scored Kram and Sandberg.

Kaneland coach Brian Aversa replaced Limbrunner with Jordan Bock.

Bock threw two quick strikes to RW Rienow, the first batter he faced. The next four pitches missed the strike zone, putting Rienow on first.

The right-handed reliever then walked Chris Johnson to load the bases.

After a conference with Aversa, Bock found the strike zone again with Warrior cleanup hitter Jake Lindstedt.

“I just told him to calm down. He was fine and had the defense behind him,” Aversa said.

Wheaton Academy staked Adam Ghosh, their starting pitcher, to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Kaneland scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 5-3, capitalizing on uncharacteristic Warriors errors.

The Knights added two more runs in both the second

and fourth innings.

“We threw the ball around a little bit and that might have cost us the game,” Byrne said.

“That’s not who we are. We had a good season in the field and today we just didn’t make some plays.”

The Warriors reached O’Sullivan for a run in the fifth to narrow the gap to 9-4 and plated two runs in the sixth off of Limbrunner.

O’Sullivan earned the victory and Ghosh took the loss.

Wheaton Academy ended the season with a 28-7 record.

Tara Zufan opened the fourth with a single for the Bulldogs, who were leading 5-2. The senior right fielder was the first of 12 Batavia batters in an inning that featured five doubles, two singles and a triple.

Ryanne Rokos hit the triple in her second plate appearance of the inning. The triple scored Olivia Bumbar with the Bulldogs’ 13th run of the game.

“We got off to a sluggish start. We came with a little bit of low energy,” said Lupe Castellanos, Batavia’s coach. “We came through in the fourth inning when we started hitting the ball in the gaps and scoring some runs.”

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but we really brought the energy up in the fourth inning,” said Rokos, a senior center fielder.

“We had three good innings, that’s what I’m proud of,” said East Aurora coach Carly Patkus. “Three strong innings and we stuck with them.”

GENEVA – The St. Charles East boys volleyball team swept South Elgin, 25-19, 25-14, in a Geneva Regional quarterfinal Monday, advancing to a semifinal against top-seeded St. Charles North at 5:30 p.m. today.

In the day’s other quarterfinal, Wheaton Academy defeated Elgin, 25-11, 25-19, and will meet host Geneva in a semifinal at 6:30 p.m. today.

The regional semifinal winners will play for the regional championship at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

BASEBALL Class 4A Marmion Regional quarterfinal: Naperville North 6, Marmion 5:

At Naperville, Naperville North’s Alex Garron hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Marmion had rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.

Jake Esp struck out five in 61⁄3 innings, while Brandon McPherson had two hits.

RUGBY Predators second in state:

At Rockford, the Fox Valley Predators high school boys club rugby team suffered a shutout loss to the West Suburban Bulls in the Division 2 state final.

“Very proud of the team,” Tommy Fink, a St. Charles East senior and team captain, wrote. “Though we were undersized, every single game, every single week [we] showed a ridiculous amount of heart and desire.”

The Predators were under a first-year consolidation with the Batavia Rugby Club.

Jay Crawford is the team’s head coach.

“First year the Predators combine with Batavia, and we go to state,” Fink wrote.

“Really goes to show how great of a coach Crawford and his assistants are.”

BATAVIA – The skies, which looked ominous throughout Monday’s Class 4A Oswego Regional first-round game between Batavia and East Aurora, opened up in the top of the fifth inning and a driving rain fell on the field, forcing the umpires to stop play.

Batavia had just finished a scoring storm in its half of the fourth. Bulldogs batters rapped out eight hits in the inning, scoring eight runs and giving the team a 13-2 lead.

The Bulldogs needed three more outs to win by the 10-run rule. The rain let up enough to resume play and for Batavia to secure the victory, but not before the Tomcats threatened to narrow the lead.

With a 2-1 count on East Aurora (1-21) leadoff batter and pitcher Brianna Ping, the umpires stopped the game because of a steady downpour.

After five minutes, the rain let up enough for play to resume. Ping reached base on an error and advanced to second when Jennifer Abell drew a walk from starting Batavia

Durocher-Wahlberg a key combo for Stars Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Having the chance to play alongside Hanna Durocher this season is something that has benefitted St. Charles North freshman girls soccer player Gia Wahlberg.

The senior-freshman forward combination is a large reason as to why the North Stars will be heading to a sectional for the 13th straight season.

Of the 73 goals the North Stars have scored in 21 games so far this season, there is a good chance that one of, if not both, Durocher or Wahlberg’s names can be found in the goal or assist column.

“It’s definitely made it easier playing with players like Hanna,” Wahlberg said of her first high school season. “We have really gotten to know how each other plays and where our runs are going to be. I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but it has definitely gotten easier since the beginning of the season.”

What is a more interesting fact is that the two are very different, but effective players in their own game.

Durocher, who has 15 goals this year, as well as a team-high 16 assists, has won a regional in each of her four seasons as a North Star. Head coach Ruth Vostal said in her 15 years in charge of the North girls soccer program, this being her final year, Durocher is one of the smartest players she has ever coached.

The senior forward brings the leadership that any team that wishes to be successful needs, and Vostal said it’s the intangible things that you can’t really teach.

“She just gets the game,” Vostal said. “She knows when she needs to slow it down and when to come back and help out defensively to weather the storm. She just has that soccer knowledge that is hard to teach. I wasn’t going to put her in at the end [of the regional final against Geneva], but I did and she did a nice job calming everyone down.”

As Vostal put it, she’s just a player who has it all and will be dangerous in years to come.

“She’s going to be absolutely incredible,” Vostal said.

“She’s already a phenomenal player and getting attention

from people. The different ways she can set herself up in the offensive third is second to none. She is one of the most creative players I’ve seen, so I can’t imagine what she’s going to be like in a few years.”

As different as the two players are, the chemistry has come with just over one year

of playing on the same team.

Durocher and Wahlberg each had a goal and an assist in North’s 3-1 regional championship win over Geneva.

Wahlberg assisted Durocher’s goal, something that is almost a given at this point.

“She’s so good at beating people on the outside,”

Durocher said of Wahlberg.

“When she does that, I just always try to position myself in a good spot so she can find me. We’ve gotten better and better at reading each other this year. When she finds me, I just do my job and put it in the net.”

North (19-2-2) has not had a loss in its last 14 matches, including winning the Tournament of Champions in Burlington, Iowa, in early May. The last defeat came on April 16, a 2-1 loss to Hinsdale Central, as part of the PepsiCo Showdown. North also lost its season opener to Conant (14-61), who will take on St. Charles East (21-1-1) in the other semifinal of the Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional on Wednesday.

The North Stars will follow the East-Conant game with a match against Wheaton North (16-2-3), with the winners advancing to Saturday’s sectional championship.

Geneva would get another crack at St. Charles North should the seeding hold at this week’s Geneva boys volleyball regional.

Entering tonight’s semifinals, the teams stand one victory away from meeting in Wednesday’s regional championship game.

It’s been about a month since the North Stars rallied for a 23-25, 25-18, 25-15 home victory to take an inside track to their third consecutive Upstate Eight Conference River Division crown.

Although the result sent the Vikings’ season on a different path, it was ultimately an introspective one. “After the North game, I think the main focus was just to improve on our defense and blocking,� Geneva senior outside hitter Nick Buseski said. “So in practices, that’s been our main focus, because we’re usually a pretty good of-

Rosary’s Martin, Ronzone finish 1-2 in 1,600 ACC, Kaneland athletes also bring home medals

By JOE STEVENSON joestevenson@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Rosary senior Emily Martin did not even consider herself a 1,600-meter runner to start the season, and look at her now.

Martin found that race to her liking about six weeks ago, changed her training regimen and finished the season as Class 2A state champion.

Martin’s junior teammate Madison Ronzone was right alongside on the medals stand as runner-up at the IHSA Girls Track and Field Meet on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium.

Martin won the race in 4:56.51, while Ronzone ran 5:00.14 to hold off Peoria Notre Dame’s Maryjeanne Gilbert, who earlier won the 3,200 and had won the Class 2A cross country state title in November. “It’s amazing,� Martin said. “Six weeks ago I didn’t picture myself running the 1,600 at state. At one of our meets, our coach told me to try doing a 2:38 [800] pace for a [1,600] and it really opened my eyes that I could go faster.�

Rosary was eighth in the team standings with 26 points as Martin and Ronzone teamed with Shea Vero and Mallory Rettenmeier for a runner-up finish in the 4x800 relay.

Aurora Central Catholic’s Karina Liz successfully defended her 800 title and took third in the 400. “I was going in thinking I wanted to get a fast time, but my legs just felt like, not up to speed,� Liz said. “So then I pushed as hard as I could. I gave it my all today, I’m proud of that.�

Kaneland’s Allie Heinzer took third in the 400 and helped the Knights’ 4x400 relay to a state runner-up finish.

Kaneland finished fifth as a team with 31 points, one point from tying Normal U-High and Springfield Southeast for

third.

Heinzer was excited about her 400 finish, but even happier for the 4x400 relay, which barely made the finals with the last of nine qualifying spots. “I didn’t get the best [400] time, but I fought to get third place,� she said. “We were ranked so low in the 4x4, but I knew we could do well. We showed that we should be in the finals.�

Kaneland’s Brianna Bower took fourth in the 3,200 and the Knights also grabbed a fourth in the 4x100 relay.

Martin and Ronzone came to Charleston with the secondand third-fastest seed times behind Gilbert. “It was so exciting,� Ronzone said. “We’ve been thinking about this all season, so to have this moment finally get here is great. I knew it was a possibility, but knew it would be really hard with Maryjeanne there with us.�

In Class 3A, St. Charles East’s Torree Scull capped her career with a leg on the fifthplace 4x800 relay team and a runner-up finish in the 1,600.

Palatine’s Kelly O’Brien took a huge lead in that race, but Streamwood’s Gabby Juarez (4:53.68) and Scull (4:55.56) eventually ran her down in the last lap. St. Charles North freshman Audrey Ernst was fifth in the 1,600. “We ran like that pretty much all season,� Scull said of her Upstate Eight Conference rival Juarez. “I was just focusing on staying with the pack and having a little kick at the end. I’m happy with where I am.�

Moving to a smaller house or apartment or trying for a less cluttered house usually means there are unwanted toys.

“Kovels Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide 2015” lists a late-1950s toy Radicon Robot that sold for $37,200, a very rare 1916 French doll that auctioned for $300,000, and a blue 1962 Chrysler Imperial friction toy with the box that sold for $26,550. And many more toys are listed that sold for hundreds and even thousands of dollars. What makes a toy that valuable? Barbie, Hot Wheels, stuffed Teddy bears and other popular toys are easy to find at yard sales for low prices, but the special ones exist today in small numbers. The first Barbie, 1959, in excellent condition is worth $6,000.

Toys that move and make noise get good prices. In the 1930s and ‘40s, many colorful tin toys were made in the U.S. by Louis Marx. He founded his toy company in 1919, and by the 1950s, his company was the largest toy manufacturer in the world. Chances are there is a Marx toy in your family. “Drummer Boy” is a tin Marx toy made in about 1949. It is a tin man dressed in a yellow and orange band uniform, pushing a large drum balanced on a wheel. Wind it up and it rolls across the floor while pounding the drum. That toy sold recently for $370. It was inexpensive when new because Marx had reused some old toy parts and patterns. The company created a Charlie McCarthy toy in 1938, when the ventriloquist dummy was a star on the radio. The toy’s drum said “Strike up the Band, Here comes Charlie.” The head and lithographed designs on the tin drum were changed to

make the new toy. Charlie, harder to find, sells for over $2,000. Before you clean out your toys, take the time to do some research. Age, condition and rarity set the price, so don’t assume an old Hot Wheels or Barbie or a damaged teddy bear is worth only a few dollars. *** Q: I have a round vase made from a mortar shell from World War I. It’s been in my husband’s family for years. They got it from relatives in Europe. The brass vase is hammered and decorated. It’s 8 1/2 inches high and has several letters and numbers marked on the bottom, including the date “Jun 1 1917.” Does it have any value?

A: This is a form of folk art known as “trench art.” It started during World War I when soldiers in the trenches used metal casings from bullets and mortar shells to make vases, ashtrays, lamps, letter openers, and other objects. Now it’s used to describe art from other conflicts.

The markings meant something to the person making the vase, but it’s impossible to decipher them now. June 1 probably was the date of an important battle.

Other numbers and letters may identify the division or unit the soldier belonged to or the place where they were fighting.

Trench art is collectible. The value of your vase is about $200. *** Q: We found a picture of World War I soldiers in our attic. It’s about a yard long. There appear to be about a hundred soldiers sitting and standing in front of a line of tents. It reads “Co. L, 3rd Pioneer Inf., Camp Wadsworth, S.C., Moore Photo.” Can you give us any information about this photo and its value?

A: Camp Wadsworth was an army mobilization center from 1917 to 1919, during World War I. Pioneer Infantry regiments marched at the head of each battalion to clear the way. They did mi-

Mohs surgery is best treatment for basal cell skin cancer

Dear Doctor K: I have basal cell skin cancer on my face and am scheduled to have Mohs surgery.

Can you describe what will happen during the procedure?

Dear Reader: Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Basal cell cancer is a very slow-growing type of skin cancer. It is unlikely to spread to other parts of the body, and therefore is rarely life-threatening. The most common cause of basal cell cancer is damage from sun exposure.

Basal cell carcinoma begins in basal cells, which are located deep in the skin. When these basal cells turn cancerous, they invade surrounding tissues, spreading downward and outward below the skin’s surface.

Basal cell cancer occurs most often on the skin near the eyes, nose, lips and ears. That’s because the skin in these areas is most likely to be exposed to sunlight. Basal cell cancers can form elsewhere on the body, as well.

When it starts, the cancer forms a small, smooth, painless white or pink bump. The bump later becomes an open ulcer with a hard edge. (I’ve put an illustra-

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized procedure that has two main advantages. First, it is better than the traditional technique at seeing the edges (“margins”) of the cancer, thereby assuring the surgeon that all of the cancer has been removed.

Second, it gives a better cosmetic result.

Mohs surgery is usually the first choice for removing highrisk basal cell skin cancers. It also is the usual first choice for highrisk cases of a second common type of skin cancer, squamous cell cancer. High-risk cases are those most likely to return. Mohs also is more often the choice when either of these cancers is on the face.

The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove all of the cancer cells while preserving as much of the normal tissue around the cancer as possible. The more normal tissue that is preserved, the smaller the scar and the better the

cosmetic result.

The surgery is done in steps.

The surgeon shaves away the tumor in thin layers, one layer at a time. Each layer is immediately checked under a microscope.

This process is repeated until the outer edge of the removed layer (the margin) is free of cancer cells. This allows the surgeon to preserve as much healthy skin as possible while making sure that all of the cancer is removed.

Mohs surgery is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure typically takes two to four hours. Much of that time is spent waiting while the removed tissue is analyzed, to see if the margin is cancer-free.

The cure rate for basal cell skin cancers with Mohs surgery is close to 100 percent. For the best results, be sure the doctor who performs your Mohs surgery has expertise in the technique. The surgical staff should be trained to process and evaluate each layer of tissue quickly and accurately.

Date to prom not teen’s type Dr. Wallace: All the couples at my school are already making plans to go to the senior prom, which is just around the corner. I was hoping that a certain guy would ask me to the prom, but I just found out he has asked another girl and she said yes. I was really disappointed.

Last week a guy I don’t know very well asked me to go to the prom, but I told him to call me in a week and I would let him know. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go with him, but I’m not sure that I’d get another invite at this late date.

I’m in the 12th grade, and I really do want to go to the prom. Our school does not allow students to attend the prom without dates.

The prom has evolved from being a dance to primarily a social get-together. But remember to include this guy in your social conversations and prom activities.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and work part-time at a sporting goods store. A cute girl from another high school also works there and was dating Kurt, who works there only on the weekends.

This girl is very pretty and extremely nice. I often dreamed that she was my girlfriend. About a month ago, she and

I was totally shocked when Kurt told me yesterday at work that he was quitting his weekend job here and getting back together with his ex. And then he told me to “get out of her life!”

At work today I spoke with my “dream girl” and she said that she was sorry but that Kurt had asked her out and she thought they would get back together again.

Leave it at that. She told you in the beginning that she wasn’t interested in a serious relationship with you. Couples do get back together after a breakup – and some do break up a second time. Chances are good that she would go out with you again if she were free again. Don’t do anything silly to jeopardize that chance.

This is the same deal as in yesterday’s column, but in one of my classes, a woman holding the South cards made a very heavy weak jump overcall of three hearts.

This understandably was passed out. How did the defense go against three hearts?

I had anticipated South’s intervening with two hearts, West’s raising to two spades, and East’s jumping to four spades. Then, as explained yesterday, East gets home by ruffing his low heart with dummy’s spade jack.

Against three hearts, West led her lowest spade. South saw four top losers (two hearts and two diamonds), so thought she would have to find the club queen to make her contract. However, after she won the first trick with dummy’s spade ace and led a trump, East went in with her king and shifted to her singleton club.

Declarer took that and played a high trump to East’s ace. Now East had to get West on lead to receive a club ruff. But did West hold the spade king or diamond ace?

West knew that her partner had led a singleton club. She had carefully dropped a suit-preference club three at trick three and also had played low-high in trumps.

So East, getting the message, led her diamond nine. West overtook and gave her partner the club ruff.

Then East cashed the diamond king for down one. Pretty!
