Kane County Genealogical Society to meet Thursday GENEVA – The next meeting of the Kane County Genealogical Society will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the first-floor meeting room of the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva. The presenter will be Robert Glenn “Bob� Allen. His topic for the evening is “Finding Your Genealogical Information Via Secret Societies.� Beyond recording names, dates and places, he has focused on how his ancestors lived their lives – their work, community involvement, beliefs, memberships and politics. He has taught both beginning and advanced workshops on genealogy. At the conclusion of the presentation, he will take questions.

Fine art show delights all ages in 17th year

ST. CHARLES – The 17th Annual St. Charles Fine Art Show’s first day Saturday was busy from the minute On the web it opened, To see a video of s a i d S u e McDowell, children painting the event’s at the St. Charles Fine Art show, visit committee chair.

“Everything was wonderful; the crowd was fantastic,” McDowell said Saturday afternoon.

The show, which ran through Sunday afternoon, featured work from about 100 juried artists, including paintings, jewelry, photography and more along and near Riverside Avenue in downtown St. Charles.

The show is an annual Downtown St. Charles Partnership event.

Kimber Fiebiger, a Minneapolis-based bronze and metal sculptor, said she had great crowds and reception Saturday, her first time showing at the event.

Fiebiger said she learned about the show after being part of the St. Charles Park Foundation-sponsored Sculpture in the Park program.

Her Mr. Eggwards sculpture in 2013 became part of a permanent display at Mount St. Mary Park in St. Charles.

Fiebiger’s sculptures were a highlight for Chicago resident Bryon Lucero. He was at the show with his fiancée, Nilda, and his son, Kyle, 15, because one of his friends is in the band Trio Life, which performed at the show on Saturday.

Lucero’s fiancée enjoyed the show, but suggested that it have at least one vendor in place to provide food and wa-

ter inside the show.

McDowell said other attendees have suggested vendors as well. Part of the purpose of the show is to get people to patronize the nearby restaurants, some of which are a half-block from the show, she said. She noted that Starbucks, 101 E. Main St., St. Charles, next to the event ended up offering free cups of water from its front counter to the show’s attendees.

“If we improve every year, we’ve met our goal,” McDowell said.

St. Charles resident April Luther said she enjoys coming to the art show with her husband, Brad, and daughter, Reagan, 3, because it’s so close to home. On Saturday, she purchased a canvas painting of a giraffe and duck for Reagan by artist Melvin McGee of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The Luthers also took Reagan to the show’s feature tent presented by All Things Art Studio, 1106 W. Main St., St.

Charles. Studio owner Erin Livermore had children paint individual tiles that will be used to form a collaborative mural for display at a to-be-determined location in downtown St. Charles this summer.

At the end of summer, the mural will be returned to the studio and magnetized to be-

come an interchangeable, interactive feature there, Livermore said.

“It’s to great to have something like this for the parents,” Livermore said of her handson workshops at the show.

“We pride ourselves on having really great teachers and many fun programs.”

Rosary’s Martin, Ronzone finish 1-2 in Class 2A 1,600

By JOE STEVENSON joestevenson@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Rosary senior Emily Martin did not even consider herself a 1,600-meter runner to start the season, and look at her now.

Martin found that race to her liking about six weeks ago, changed her training regimen and finished the season as Class 2A state champion. Martin’s junior teammate Madison Ronzone right alongside on the medals stand as runner-up at the IHSA Girls Track and Field Meet Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium.

Martin won the race in 4:56.51, while Martin ran 5:00.14 to hold off Peoria Notre Dame’s Maryjeanne Gilbert, who earlier won the 3,200 and had won the Class 2A cross country state title in November.

“It’s amazing,” Martin said. “Six weeks ago I didn’t picture myself running the 1,600 at state. At one of our meets, our coach told me to try doing a 2:38 [800] pace for a [1,600] and it really opened my eyes that I could go faster.”

Rosary was eighth in the team standings with 26 points as Martin and Ronzone teamed with Shea Vero and Mallory Rettenmeier for a runner-up finish in the 4x800 relay.

Aurora Central Catholic’s Karina Liz successfully defender her 800 title and took third in the 400.

“I was going in thinking I wanted to get a fast time, but my legs just felt like, not up to speed,” Liz said. “So then I pushed as hard as I could. I gave it my all today, I’m proud of that.”

Kaneland’s Allie Heinzer took third in the 400 and helped the Knights’ 4x400 relay to a state runner-up finish. Kaneland finished fifth as a team with 31 points, one point from tying Normal U-High and Springfield Southeast for third.

Heinzer was excited about her 400 finish, but even happier for the 4x400 relay, which barely made the finals with the last of nine qualifying spots.

“I didn’t get the best (400) time, but I fought to get third place,” she said. “We were ranked so low in the 4x4, but I knew we could do well. We showed that we should be in the finals.”

Carly Bartholomew, Olivia Galor and Jamie Martens joined Heinzer on the 4x400 relay team.

Kaneland’s Brianna Bower took fourth in the 3,200 and the Knights also grabbed a fourth in the 4x100 relay.

Martin and Ronzone came to Charleston with the second- and third-fastest seed times behind GIlbert.

“It was so exciting,” Ronzone said.

“We’ve been thinking about this all season, so to have this moment finally get here is great. I knew it was a possibility,

“We ran like that pretty much all season,” Scull said of her Upstate Eight Conference rival Juarez. “I was just focusing on staying with the pack and having a little kick at the end. I’m happy with where I am.”

couple Viking defenders and slid a cross to Durocher, who doubled the North Stars’ lead with 28:40 to go.

Just 33 seconds later, Hailey Rydberg found Wahlberg, whose left-footed shot from outside the box found the left side netting to give North a 3-0 lead.

“I think the energy and intensity we came out with in the second half was a big difference,” Wahlberg said. “There was just this want and fire in everyone to win. Not just today, but all season, and I think that’s something so special that I’ve never experienced before this year.”

For the North Stars’ program to win 13 straight regional titles, with the most recent sending them to the Schaumburg Sectional to take on Wheaton North on Wednesday, says something about not only the

coaching but, as Durocher also described, the feel of playing for the program.

“It’s honestly just so much fun playing [for this program],” Durocher said. “The coaches make sure we know what is expected, but there’s not really a pressure on us. We just know what we need to do to get positive results and it’s worked pretty well.”

Landry ended her Vikings’ soccer career with a goal with under seven minutes left. Although it didn’t lead to a comeback, Geneva coach Megan Owens said if her team was to lose, she was glad it certainly wasn’t because of a lack of effort.

“I told them that at some point every team has to go through this,” Owens said.

“Unless you win a state title, every team’s season ends at some point. But I am very proud of how hard to girls fought. Not just today, but all season. No matter how many challenges we faced, they came back the next day ready to go.

As a coach, that’s all you can ask for.”

The North and Wheaton North game will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, after the first semifinal between St. Charles East and Conant. The winners will meet for the sectional championship on Saturday.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE MAPLE PARK – The last time Kaneland coach Peter Goff had seen someone hit three home runs in one game was in a Major League Baseball game on TV. He watched that same performance in person on Saturday when Meg Cohrs hit three home runs for Kaneland as the Knights rolled past Rosary, 14-3, in six innings, for the nonconference win.

“They were all shots,” Goff said of Cohrs’ home runs. “I mean, I don’t think I have ever seen anything in person quite like that.”

Courtney Davis had four hits and Rachel Goress drove in three runs for the Knights as well for the Knights (19-8), who exploded for 16 hits on the afternoon.

Anna VanGundy had two hits in the loss for Rosary in Game 1.

Kaneland won the second game, 6-1.

“When we get timely hitting, we usually win games,” Goff said. “We are heading into the postseason hitting well and pitching well, which is the exciting part.”

GENEVA – It took the St. Charles North girls soccer team a while, by their standards, to break through against Geneva in Saturday’s Class 3A Geneva Regional championship game.

But once the North Stars did, they took control.

Hannah Durocher and Gia Wahlberg had a goal and an assist each as North beat Geneva, 3-1, to win its 13th straight regional title.

“We talked about our styles being different today,” North coach Ruth Vostal said. “As the game went on, we started playing more to feet and moving much better off the ball. We didn’t get frustrated at all in the beginning, and I’m proud that the girls continued to fight.”

A big reason why North (192-2) didn’t score until the 13:41 mark of the first half, on a goal

by Madison Kaufman, was Geneva goalkeeper Carrie Ostergard.

The freshman net minder made a diving save to rob Durocher of a goal, as well as saving a penalty kick of the foot of North’s Lizzie Parrilli early in the first half.

But Kaufman’s shot seemed to fool Ostergard and the ball found its way past her and into the net for the game’s opening goal.

“You can’t score if you don’t keep shooting,” Durocher said. “We kept trying different things and kept at it, and we eventually got one to go in.”

Ostergard wasn’t the only goalkeeper on display in Saturday’s match. North senior Shelby Stitz robbed Mary Landry from point blank range, just minutes after Kaufman’s goal.

The save forced a corner kick, which found Landry’s head and, again, Stitz made a diving save to keep the Vikings (9-11-3) off the scoreboard.

Ostergard finished with seven saves and Stitz had five.

That is a good rule for bridge.

When the dummy comes down, declarer should deliberate with care, looking for dangers to his contract and trying to find a line of play to get around them safely.

In today’s deal, for example, South is in four spades. West leads the heart queen. After winning with his ace, what should declarer do?

South’s jump to four spades is a slight stretch, but we love to bid vulnerable games because they pay a big bonus. Any time you smell a game, bid game.

Declarer seems to have four losers: two spades, one heart and one club. But South can eliminate that heart loser by ruffing it on the board. However, should he play a round of trumps first?

If the defenders are astute, he should not. West will win with his king and lead his remaining trump. East will take that trick and play his last trump to denude the dummy of spades.

Then declarer will lose those four tricks.

Instead, South should cash his heart king and cautiously ruff the heart two with dummy’s spade jack. Do not risk East’s overruffing the spade two. As West overcalled in hearts, there is a great risk that East has only a doubleton heart – and he probably played high-low to emphasize that fact.

In one of my classes, though, a West cautiously passed over one spade. Now South, unwarned, incautiously ruffed the third heart low and went down.
