Elburn’s Wdowicki to hold 9/11 ceremony ELBURN – When a former caretaker stopped by his home with a gift earlier this year, Elburn resident Paul Wdowicki was excited to see what it was.

He noticed it was something made in patriotic colors, and he suspected it had something to do with his annual 9/11 ceremony.

Wdowicki, a former volunteer firefighter, tends to a memorial garden in his front yard, and each year he welcomes officials with the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District for a ceremony that honors those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

“When I saw the red, white and blue, I knew it was something I was going to be in love with,” Wdowicki said.

He was right. Wdowicki took a good look at a decoration that featured an Ameri-

Wdowicki, 83, has been hosting the ceremony for 10 years in Elburn. The event is solemn and brief. Representatives from Elburn’s fire department participate in flag-raising events, and there is a prayer and the reciting of the firefighter’s prayer. All are welcome.

“The garden’s gotten so much bigger,” Wdowicki said.

He said the event pays tribute to all firefighters who have died in the line of duty, and he noted recent deaths associated with wildfires in the western United States, including that of Andrew Zajac, the son of Baker Memorial United Methodist Church Pastor Mary Zajac and her husband, Jim. “This is dedicated to them, too,” Wdowicki said.

bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – An 18-year-old Campton Township man drowned Monday while swimming in a quarry in Wisconsin.

Marquis Hough was one of two adopted children of Liz and Bill Hough, said family friend Alicia O’Connell of Winfield. The Houghs also have three biological children, she said.

“His mom is my best friend, and they are very overwhelmed,” O’Connell said.

Marquis Hough went with friends from church to their

cabin in Wisconsin, and to go swimming at Redgranite Quarry during the Labor Day holiday, O’Connell said.

“He was swimming, and he told his friends he was cramping up and ‘I need help,’ ” O’Connell said. “His Marquis friend was 10 Hough feet in front of him and tried to help, but he went under.”

The funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, also at the church, according to an online obituary notice at Moss Family Funeral Home in Batavia. The family has a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.

The Houghs are founders of Beautiful U Ministries with a resale shop in Elburn. The charity aids at-risk pregnant teens and teen mothers.

O’Connell said the Houghs adopted Marquis when he was about 12 or 13.

“He was a very resilient spirit of all that he had been through with foster care,”

O’Connell said. “He was a very outgoing, warm, tender-hearted person. He harbored no bitterness. He went to church at Riverside Community Church, and he was the life of the youth group.”

A recent graduate of Burlington-Central High School, Marquis was so intelligent and scored so high on the Navy entrance exams that he was going to be working in the nuclear program, O’Connell said “He had a very bright future,” O’Connell said. “He really did love the Lord. We are confident he is at home with Jesus.”

Prayer gathering set in face of fatal police shooting

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – In the wake of last week’s fatal shooting of Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joesph Gliniewicz, Batavia resident Pam Liesendahl is helping put together a community prayer gathering to show support for Batavia police officers and other local police departments.

“We need to show the people who serve and protect us that we’re with them,” Liesendahl said. “We are standing with them, and we are praying for them and their safety.”

Liesendahl and her niece, Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Jamie Saam, will host a community prayer gathering at 7 p.m. today at the Peg Bond Center near the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

Liesendahl, who also has a lake house in Antioch, which is near Fox Lake, said she has seen an outpouring of support for Gliniewicz since he was fatally shot. Those who participate in the prayer gathering also will be praying for firefighters, elected officials and other community leaders.

Local churches, such as River City Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church, will be participating in the prayer gathering, Saam said.

“It gives us that chance to gather together and pray for good things to come into our community, and for those people serving us to feel our support,” Saam said.

Yard sale raises funds for facility upgrades PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Felkamp The Batavia Park District hosted a yard sale fundraiser in August at the Batavia Boat Club in an effort to raise funds for facility renovations. The Boat Club is a cozy venue on the site of Laurelwood Park on the east side of the Fox River. It was built in the late 1950s as a meeting place for local Boat Club members. The district bought the building in the late 1970s, and – over the course of the next few decades – a variety of classes, meetings and events were held there.

Throughout the decades, the facility has been in dire need of repairs and remodeling. Interior upgrades were completed in the spring, including a fresh coat of paint on the interior and new hardware on the kitchenette cabinets. The Boat Club facility also received a much-needed face-lift to its exterior in August when new siding was installed. However, additional repairs and upgrades still are needed.

The park district decided to host the public yard sale to raise funds to replace the current floor, which was installed in the late 1970s. The sale also served as a way for the public to see the ongoing transformation and the true potential of the charming facility.

ties donated items to the yard sale. A number of Batavia Park District items that previously had been deemed surplus property also were included in the sale. As a result, the district was able to raise nearly $2,000, but also was able to showcase the facility to the community.

So when the Geneva High School alumna last year stepped onstage in a bikini with the sole purpose of having her body judged in a bodybuilding competition, family approached her afterward, expressing their disbelief, she said.

Houben, who is one of several women from the Tri-Cities area involved with bodybuilding, doesn’t deny the experience was terrifying. In fact, she said, she was shaking so badly she could barely hold her smile.

Five months of work and emotions came pouring out as she stepped offstage, she said.

“I just cried because I was overwhelmed,” said the University of Wisconsin-Madison sophomore, who competes in the figure division. “I put myself through something so mentally and physically taxing.”

Since taking up bodybuilding, the former ballet dancer said she has watched her 108-pound “almost too thin” frame add muscle, bringing her to a more attractive 112

pounds.

“I’ve gained so much muscle,” Lewis said. “It’s a very exciting process because you see yourself grow.”

Although lifting weights is part of bodybuilding, Lewis and Geneva resident Rebin Roy said diet plays a big part.

“That’s 99 percent of it,”

Roy said.

Roy, a former Bodybuilder. com “Female Transformation of the Year” who has lost and kept off more than 100 pounds, said a misconception about bodybuilders is they are intense and unfriendly. Most everyone she has met has been “incredibly nice,” and some

have even helped others with dress zippers and safety pins, she said.

She said she has been bodybuilding for about five years.

“You have to be self-driven,” the 40-year-old said, noting the science involved in the sport hooked her.

Houben said she began bodybuilding about two years ago, when she was dissatisfied with her looks even after losing 25 pounds.

“Once I started lifting, I loved the way it made me feel,” she said, noting Nilsa Anderson took notice of her at the gym one day and offered to coach her.

Anderson, an International Federation of Bodybuilding professional female bodybuilder who owns the Competitor’s Edge gym in St. Charles, had an experience similar to Houben’s. She said she was once overweight and shy before building confidence through bodybuilding.

Now, she said, coaching is her obsession.

“I want my clients to exceed what they thought was possible,” Anderson said.

Lewis, who is preparing for a November competition in DeKalb, said her foray into bodybuilding isn’t fleeting.

“I hope to do it lifelong,” she said.

Elburn eyes sales tax question for spring election

The issue first came up months ago, when Elburn Village President Dave Anderson was exploring options for how to fund police pensions and still address other needs in the village, such as road repairs.

After bringing up possibilities including the contracting out

of services to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, then-Trustee Craig Swan brought up the idea of a sales tax.

Board members debated the issue Tuesday night at a Committee of the Whole meeting after the Elburn Village Board meeting. The intention is to eventually raise the sales tax in Elburn by 1 percent – from 7 percent to 8 percent – in four quarter-percent increments. The village would need voter approval to do so.

Questions on Tuesday night included how to phrase

the referendum question, whether officials should seek the entire 1 percent or a quarter percent at a time and how best to make their case to the voters. The spring general primary is set for March 15, and Village Administrator Erin Willrett said it will take some time to work out the details.

Board members agreed the village needs more money to cover the cost. Since the village hit the 5,000 mark in population, the money has had to come out of the village’s general fund because voters in 2012

rejected a referendum proposal to create a new property tax levy specifically to fund police pensions.

“We need some avenue to not eat up all of our general fund,” Anderson said.

The increase would be specific to general merchandise purchases and would not affect vehicle purchases, for instance.

Anderson said a quarter percent increase could add up to about $40,000. A 1 percent increase could add up to $160,000.

“It’ll help,” Trustee Jeff

Walter said of the quarter percent boost. “I don’t think it’ll cover the whole thing. ... We need the money. There is no question about that.”

Trustees agreed a sales tax would have a better chance of success than a proposal to increase property tax.

“Everybody that comes to Elburn helps,” in a sales tax scenario, Walter said.

Willrett said she would present potential referendum questions at the next board meeting, which is set for Sept.

Geneva OKs bid to build public parking lot

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen Tuesday unanimously approved spending $430,000 to build a public parking lot at the corner of South Fourth Street and Crescent Place that will have 76 parking spaces, 15 of them handicapped.

mittee of the Whole, then at a City Council meeting immediately after, the bid was awarded to Abbey Paving and Sealcoat Company of Aurora.

Although a lower bid for hot mix asphalt also was considered, Brian Schiber, city engineer and assistant public works director, said staff recommended going with a concrete parking lot because

it would last 10 to 15 years longer.

The original budgeted amount for the project was $340,000.

The council accepted a recommendation to take nearly $114,000 from the nonhome rule sales tax fund to cover the difference between the budgeted and bid amounts.

Batavia officials warn pedestrians, bicyclists to stay off Houston Street Road not expected to reopen until October or November

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As work continues on the reconstruction of Houston Street, City Administrator Bill McGrath warned pedestrians and bicyclists to keep off the road.

“I would hate to see anybody getting hurt,” McGrath told aldermen at Tuesday’s Batavia City Council meeting. “There are a lot of ditches.”

First Ward Alderman Mike O’Brien said more needs to be done than just posting signs to keep people out of the construction zone.

“We need to seal the site off,” O’Brien said. “I believe that is what we should be looking into.”

McGrath said he will be looking further into the issue. Work on the $2.7 million project to reconstruct Houston Street began in August, and the street is not expected to reopen until late October or early November.

The project will include wider sidewalks with areas of paver bricks, new ornamental lighting, planting beds, trees and new storm sewers. The water main within the project area was replaced in 2014 in prepara-

tion for the streetscape project.

Bump-outs also will be installed where Houston Street intersects with Water Street and Island Avenue to narrow the roadway width to provide shorter pedestrian crossings. The project is designed to revitalize the downtown and make it more pedestrian-friendly.

The city also has made streetscape improvements to Wilson and River streets in recent years.

GENEVA – Despite opposition from neighbors, the Casiello family Tuesday got the zoning approval it needs to open a restaurant at the former Al Capone’s Hideaway and Steakhouse.

The Kane County Board approved the zoning, 18-5, with one absent. Opposing votes were cast by Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles; Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin; Monica Silva, D-Aurora; Susan Starrett, R-Batavia; and Maria Vazquez, D-Montgomery.

John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, noted the issue was “not an easy one.”

The Casiellos are planning a family-friendly bar and grill restaurant at the former steakhouse, 35W337 Riverside Drive, St. Charles Township.

Rezoning was necessary because the property reverted to farming zoning after the Hideaway closed.

Killebrew said the family doesn’t intend to disrupt the community. Rather, he said, it intends to add to it. He called the family’s plan the “best solution” for the property.

Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, predicted “once the smoke is clear,” residents will be glad to have a place to go without having to drive to South Elgin or St. Charles.

To those asking board members to act on the matter as if it were planned for their backyard, member Brian Pollock, D-Aurora, said the district he represents contains a tavern in a residential neighborhood.

“And it’s worked,” he said, noting no complaints in his years on the board.

A liquor license has not yet been approved for the site. County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said he is in the process of gathering information about that aspect.

It’s time to get chewing tobacco out of baseball THE WASHINGTON POST The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released some dismaying findings last week. Although combustible tobacco use is down among high school students, smokeless tobacco use is up among high school athletes. If professional sports leagues don’t do more to stamp out this horrid addiction, local governments should step in and do it for them.

According to the CDC, combustible tobacco use among all high school students dropped from 31.5 percent in 2001 to 19.5 percent in 2013. But use of smokeless tobacco – chewing tobacco, snuff or dip – stayed flat at 5.9 percent among non-athletes during that period and rose from 10 percent to 11.1 percent among athletes. Moreover, the researchers found, students who participated in many sports teams used smokeless tobacco at higher rates than those who played fewer sports.

Government researchers speculated that, although athletes generally do a better job avoiding cigarettes than non-athletes, they might believe chewing tobacco or snuff is harmless – or even helpful for athletic performance. Whether they are operating on these misconceptions, or whether student-athletes are just emulating older athletes, coaches and sports stars, one obvious and long-overdue reaction should be to eliminate smokeless tobacco in major league sports.

Smokeless tobacco is far from harmless. It introduces a toxic mixture of carcinogens into the mouth, promoting several types of cancer. Even before the CDC’s findings, last year brought high-profile examples of its toll: First there was pitching legend Curt Schilling’s brutal battle with a carcinoma that began

on his tonsil; then there was the tragic death of San Diego Padres great Tony Gwynn from salivary gland cancer at age 54.

Besides, the habit is plain disgusting. ESPN reported that one NFL quarterback wears a gold grill on his lower teeth to cover up their telltale brownish tint.

Although baseball is not the only sport with a smokeless tobacco problem, its many chewing players are by far the most visible smokeless tobacco addicts in the United States.

Major League Baseball’s brass tried to ban smokeless tobacco in its 2011 contract negotiations with players. But management had to settle for half-measures.

Although smokeless tobacco is forbidden in the minor leagues, major league players merely can’t do things such as carry it in their uniforms or conduct TV interviews while chewing.

Although many players now seem to draw their chewing medium from the giant buckets of bubble gum in major league dugouts, TV cameras still catch others expectorating substances that are far from pink. It’s bad for them, and it’s a bad example. The next round of players contract negotiations begin next year, so MLB policy can’t change until after the 2016 season.

City governments aren’t waiting. San Francisco banned smokeless tobacco from sports venues in May. Boston’s city council voted to do the same last week. Other states and cities, including Washington, should do the same, now.

One measure alone probably won’t root out a practice that has been ingrained in baseball culture for so long. But there’s no downside for cities to do what Major League Baseball hasn’t, and it could help both the stars and their fans.

To the Editor: Poll after poll shows that Americans oppose the Obama deal with Iran. They have not been fooled by Obama’s propaganda. Members of Congress must put the good of the nation above partisanship and vote down the agreement.

At best, the Iran deal puts Iran on a slow path to becoming a nuclear power and dominating the Mideast.

By releasing frozen funds and ending sanctions, it provides a massive increase in funding for continued terrorist activity and for the

expansion of Iran’s sphere of influence. For some Americans, this could be a matter of life and death.

Even worse is the possibility that Iran will successfully cheat as it has done before.

We know from sad experience that U.S. intelligence cannot be relied upon to provide accurate and up-to-date information on WMD – or weapons of mass

destruction – programs.

Allowing Iran a controlling role in some of the necessary testing makes it even less likely that it will be caught.

Congress should reject the Iran deal, and U.S. sanctions should remain in place.

Fiery North sweeps Geneva in River clash

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A succinct credo steered the St. Charles North girls volleyball team to a surprisingly breezy sweep of Geneva on Tuesday.

“Our main goal today was to play with a passion, because we feel like that’s what we do best,” North stars senior right side/setter Jaclyn Taylor said.

“So I think we just came out here from point one playing

with that passion and playing together as a team.”

Actually, Geneva seized early control in this meeting of Upstate Eight Conference River Division powers, but a three-point deficit proved to be of little consequence as the North Stars avenged their lone loss of the season to date.

Although her assistant and former player, Katie Fuerst, insists otherwise, seventh-year North coach Lindsey Hawkins believes her team’s 25-11, 25-

13 victory was the program’s first against the Vikings in her tenure.

“I think it means a lot to the program,” North junior middle Anna DuVall said. “It means a lot of hard work and dedication that we put into every day of practice, and it just pays off on the court.”

North (8-1, 3-0 UEC River) met Geneva (8-1, 2-1) for the Plainfield North Invitational title on Aug. 29, and there was more that differed about the

rematch than remained the same.

To start, Geneva earned a 25-20, 25-22 sweep that day, deepening the North Stars’ tentative play with match-long intensity.

The Vikings’ 3-0 opening set lead on Tuesday notwithstanding, those roles were reversed from the start this time.

“Just couldn’t execute.

Didn’t show up and play our best game, which is difficult,” Geneva coach Annie Seitel-

man said. “But you’re playing a team as competitive and talented as North. Every team is going to have that off night, and unfortunately, tonight was ours.”

Although the Vikings won the tournament match without her services, the team again was without Wisconsin-bound junior outside hitter Grace Loberg at full strength.

The event begins at 12:30 p.m. Friday, as golfers will compete in a fundraiser scramble that welcomes amputees and non-amputees.

Saturday and Sunday rounds involve only the amputee golfers.

Through the years, the MWAGA, established in 2001, has donated funds to such endeavors as academic scholarships, golf clinics and New York City firemen after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Keep it tight: Today marks Peoria’s first home playoff game in six seasons. The Cougars went 5-6 against the Chiefs at Dozer Park in 2015 and were 4-1 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Only three of the teams’ games this season were decided by four or more runs.

The Cougars won two of three from the visiting Chiefs in the final series of the regular season.

“They’re a well-coached team and they very seldom beat themselves,” Chiefs manager Joe Kruzel said. “They throw strikes and they’ve

got pretty good pitching, and their bullpen’s pretty good.

Defensively, they make the plays, and they don’t give you too many extra opportunities or extra outs, so you understand that you’re going to have to earn it against them, so to speak.”

Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek acknowledges the challenge afoot but remains confident in a club that set a franchise record in the second half, winning 48 of 70 games.

Several Cougars were part of the parent Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2014 Northwest League championship team at Hillsboro, Oregon.

“It’s the kids’ time,” Grudzielanek said. “Everybody’s on us. Everybody’s watching now. We’re in the playoffs. They accomplished a wonderful season, but now we’ve got to start going after winning the whole thing, which we believe we can.”

The Cubs’ home sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks resonated about 40 miles west of Wrigley, too.

She smacked her lone kill two points later to draw the Vikings to within 16-9, but North’s nimble wall of blockers answered after that.

“We’re trying to keep it pretty even with every match, but there was definitely more intensity with this match,” Taylor said.

No disagreement from Seitelman.

“They were definitely gunning for us,” she said. “You could tell that from the way they came out.”

Lauren Caprini served consecutive aces during the North Stars’ 8-0 run in the first set. Gianna Crescenzo added two aces, as well.

Taylor had 11 assists, while Claire Anderson and Daley Krage both smacked four kills.

Geneva’s attack featured Ally Barrett and Kyley Thompson, but as Seitelman said, the team’s overall effort was “a little too tentative.”

As a result, she corralled the Vikings for a longer postgame meeting than usual.

The North Stars, meantime, met briefly before greeting their families and fans.

“We’ve been talking a lot about stepping on the court with a tenacity and confidence and not letting anybody really show you up or intimidate you,” Hawkins said.

Mission accomplished.

“It felt great when I was down there,” Adduci said. “I love the campus, I love the coaching staff. ... They all seemed like just great coaches. And it’s Division I southern baseball. You’re playing against some of the best competition in the country in warm weather 24/7, and I really liked that.”

Ryan Olson has burst onto the scene in his third season of varsity soccer for the North Stars. After scoring five goals in the team’s season opener, Olson has not stopped. The junior forward tallied a hat trick against Wheaton Warrenville South at the Barrington Pepsi Shootout, giving him 10 goals in five games played. Olson, this week’s Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, discussed his start to the season and much more with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey.

Here’s an edited transcript:

DeKALB – The DeKalb boys soccer team was leading Kaneland with 3:15 left in Tuesday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 match when a shot slipped through the arms of the Barbs goalkeeper to tie the game up.

Cameron Pieczynski’s shot went by Jack Fellabaum, helping the Knights escape with a 1-1 tie.

“We took a lucky shot and it went in,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “We didn’t have a good touch and that killed us the whole game. We were on our heels the whole game, we just did not play a good game.

We’ll take the outcome, but we really got outplayed today.”

DeKalb (1-2-2, 0-1-1 NI Big 12) had been in control most of the game, following a strong first half in which Alonzo Jones scored right before halftime to give the Barbs a 1-0 lead.

“We came out real bright, which was one of our goals,” Barbs coach Brent McIntosh said. “The last two games against Sterling we started out on the back studs, and our goal was to come out real strong and to force the issue. We got ourselves some good scoring chances, and we felt that if we kept playing that way that we would be in good shape. And I

thought that we had ourselves a well-deserved 1-0 lead going into halftime.”

After losing their past two games to Sterling by scores of 4-2 and 5-0, McIntosh said he was pleased with the way his team bounced back, despite the outcome against the Knights (1-3-2, 0-0-1).

Erections depend on the blood vessels that serve the penis. So it’s not surprising that vascular disease, which affects blood vessels, is the leading cause of ED. The most common type of vascular disease is atherosclerosis, which occurs when fatty deposits build up on artery walls. This narrows and clogs artery walls and limits blood flow through them.

Atherosclerosis can occur not only in the arteries of the heart and brain, but also in arteries throughout the body – including those leading to the penis.

Another common cause of ED is diabetes. Men with diabetes are two to three times more likely to experience ED than men without the disease.

Diabetes can cause ED in at least two ways. It can harm the nerves that instruct the arteries in the penis to widen and send more blood. And it can increase a

person’s tendency to develop vascular disease, which also restricts blood flow to the penis. High blood pressure and high cholesterol also increase a person’s tendency to develop diseased blood vessels and reduced blood flow.

If your ED is due to vascular disease, taking steps to improve your heart health might also help your ED. These steps include not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight. Carefully controlling blood sugar, blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels all can help prevent ED. We have more powerful medicines today to control these conditions than were available when I was a medical student. Yes, some of the blood pressure medicines sometimes can also cause ED. However, making adjustments in these medicines often improves the problem. Finally, we now also have treatments for ED, such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).

My advice is to STOP chewing it now! It’s a health hazard and a nasty habit!

This was not, per se, a deal in which using Stayman had a major effect. If North had just raised to three no-trump, West would still have led the spade six.

The only drawback of North’s employing Stayman was that the defenders knew South had started with only two or three spades.

Declarer began with eight top tricks: one spade (trick one), three diamonds and four clubs. He needed to get a heart trick.

South adopted his best line. He played a club to the dummy and called for the heart jack, trying to look like someone about to finesse East for the queen. If a sleepy East had thought that, he would have played second hand low and the contract would have made. But an awake East had applied the Rule of Eleven at trick one. Six from 11 is five.

So, there were five spades higher than the six in the North, East and South hands combined, and East had seen them all at trick one. So, West’s spades were ready to run. East grabbed the third trick and returned his spade jack to defeat the contract.
