Festival of the Vine ends weekend on sunny note

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – There are two things that bring Jenni Stark of Geneva back every year to the Festival of the Vine – the wine and Chianti’s garlic crab pasta.

On Sunday she enjoyed the pasta, along with tastings of Rex Goliath Red Sangria and Moscato with her boyfriend Dan Paulsen of DeKalb.

“Any open-air festival like this I love,” Paulsen said.

Stark and Paulsen were among the thousands of attendees in downtown Geneva for the annual festival, which ran from Friday through Sunday. The event featured food, live music, an arts and crafts show, a flower market, trolley and horse-drawn carriage rides and of course, wine pairings and tastings.

The Flavor Fare tent and its adjacent wine tent always are a big hit with festival attendees, said Laura Rush, Geneva Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman. The Chamber organizes and runs the event with some paid staff and up to 100 volunteers working various shifts throughout the festival.

Based on how busy the vendors were over the weekend, and the crowds across downtown Geneva, Rush on Monday estimated the festival brought in more than its average attendance of 75,000 people.

Angelo Dangles, owner of Her Art Shoppe, 12 S. 3rd St. in downtown Geneva, told the Chamber that he had his best day of business ever over the weekend, better than the

Friday’s turnout was affected by rainfall, but Saturday was likely a record-setting day in terms of attendance, said Jean Gaines, Geneva Chamber of Commerce president.

The festival enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures on Saturday and Sunday.

“Weather is always the factor,” Gaines said on Sunday.

“If we’ve got good weather, we know we’re like gold.”

The wine tent had 18 different varieties to choose from and the Fare tent offered food from 23 local restaurants.

Winfield resident Brian Gallichio said the eggplant Parmesan from Josef’s Elegante Meats & Deli, 716 W.

State St. in Geneva, was delicious. He, his wife, Judy, and their two children stopped by the festival Sunday for the first time after picking apples at Kuipers Family Farm in Maple Park.

“Some of the best festival food you usually get is in a small town,” Brian Gallichio said.

Before the Gallichios hit the Fare tent, they walked around downtown Geneva to take in the shops and the other parts of the festival. Several business owners held special events and wine tastings outside their storefronts.

Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery, 477 S. Third St., offered a daily wine tasting and on Sunday had musician

Kris Pasterak said her family had a rehearsal earlier in the day in Geneva for State Street Dance Studio’s upcoming production of “The Nutcracker” and stayed at the festival while their 15-year-old daughter Alexandra continued to practice. They have attended the festival every year since they moved into the area 12 years ago.

“It’s just such a great environment,” Kris Pasterak said.

“Although we are sad summer is winding down, it’s a great way to kickoff autumn.”

Kaneland addresses superintendent search and pipeline project

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – With the school district’s new interim superintendent taking her seat, the Kaneland School District 302 Board on Monday night began to turn its focus to a long-term solution for the position.

The interim superintendent, Renee Goier, took her seat in the middle of the table at which board members sit. The previous superintendent, Jeff Schuler, would sit at the end of one of the tables.

But before hearing presentations from two search firms to hire the permanent superintendent, board members heard from representatives from TransCanada, a company that owns pipelines that sit under the east end of the Kaneland High School campus. Curtis Parker, a representative from TransCanada, explained to board members why the company couldn’t wait until summer to perform the upgrades needed to meet regulations. Parker, who was joined by two others from the company, told board members that TransCanada discovered in July that the area above the pipelines now is used much more than before.

Once the company learned of that, there were two options – reduce the pipeline pressure or increase the size of the pipelines. The company reduced the pipeline pressure, which worked in the summer, but now that winter is approaching, the lines must be increased.

Board member Peter Lopatin asked what the implications would be if the company continued to reduce the pressure through the winter. Would people be at risk for not being able to heat their homes? Parker said that

would be a risk.

“We need full and normal operating pressure,” Parker said.

Board members also were concerned about safety about noise and about traffic. Parker said the company would do all it could to address every issue, including the use of a traffic plan and the use of a fence around the pipeline site. As far as the heavy equipment, some must be used during the day, but the project would be operating 24 hours a day, so some might be done outside of school hours.

After the TransCanada presentation, board members began hearing from two companies bidding to find the permanent replacement for Schuler, who has departed the district to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200.

As of press time, the second search firm had not yet done its presentation. The first presentation was made by BWP and Associates, which brought four members who touted their experience and their transparent process.

Committee backs Fox River closure for regatta

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee on Monday supported a national rowing group’s Fox River closure request for its first regatta in the city.

The Planning and Development Committee voted unanimously in favor of recommending the river closure and an amplification license for the Inaugural RowAmerica St. Charles Regatta, which will be on Oct. 4. The river will

be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oct. 4, from north of the railroad trestle to the city’s northern border, according to the request.

The regatta is a competition which consists of a 5,000 meter race. RowAmerica requested the authorization and sanctioning of this event by the city to comply with the Special Condition number one of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Statewide Permit #14 to close the Fox River.

“Community members are encouraged to watch the race

from watercraft off the race course, or on the river bank,” said David Miller, director of RowAmerica St. Charles.

Miller attended the Planning and Development’s Committee’s meeting Monday.

He expects 300 to 500 people in attendance for the regatta, and majority of spectators will be able to view the races from Pottawatomie Park.

RowAmerica is a national rowing company founded by Howard Winklevoss, father of twins Cameron and Tyler, who rowed in the Beijing Olympics.

asloboda@shawmedia.com It’s not unusual for Jim Nicodem, senior pastor of Christ Community Church in St. Charles Township, to do a lot of preparation for his weekly messages, but one topic took him particularly long: homosexuality.

It was such a big topic, he said, he didn’t want to get it wrong.

After about a year of preparation that included reading up to a dozen books on the subject and talking to people with same-sex attraction, Nicodem presented a three-week series titled “The Gospel, Homosexuality and the Church” in June, the same month the same-sex marriage law went into effect in Illinois.

Because his church addresses difficult topics – such as money management, family relationships and anger issues – Nicodem said it would have been strange if it ignored homosexuality.

“We’re not going to duck a hard issue,” he said.

RESPONDING TO GAY WEDDING REQUESTS The day the same-sex marriage law went into effect, 18 same-sex couples sought marriage licenses in Kane County.

But should such couples want to get married in a church, their choices likely would be limited, as churches are taking different stances on gay weddings.

Ron Weidler, senior pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia, said last month that no gay couples had yet asked him to perform their wedding, and he doesn’t expect such requests because of the church’s “fuddy-duddy” reputation.

But in case that situation arises, Weidler already knows his answer.

“I would say no,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Congregational United Church of Christ in Campton Hills already has performed a samesex marriage service, associate minister Suzy Richards Daly said.

The Congregational United Church of Christ itself is an “open and affirming” church, meaning it welcomes persons of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. Daly said the congregation voted for that distinction several years ago.

She couldn’t say how large the church’s same-sex population is.

“More than most people realize, but it’s not something that we choose to point out because we believe they’re no different than the rest of us,”

she said.

HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE CHURCH Nicodem didn’t know what to expect when Christ Community Church dedicated three weekends to homosexuality. Church leaders were ready for disagreement and anger, he said, adding he knew the subject would make some uncomfortable.

He acknowledged that during the first day of the series but noted how prevalent homosexuality is in society.

It pops up in movies, new laws, celebrity gossip and “in the NFL draft, for crying out loud,” he told attendees.

“It’s not going away,” he said. “We need to deal with it, and we need to teach our kids to deal with it.”

When talking about homosexuality in the framework of religion, Nicodem and Weidler said they look to the Bible for guidance.

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod believes the family unit – father, mother, children – is integral to society, Weidler said. And although God loves all people, he said, God doesn’t approve of all behavior. Homosexuality is a behavior not approved by God, the pastor said, describing it as a moral issue – not a cultural one.

Similarly, Nicodem, who has a doctorate in Bible studies, said there has to be a rule of morality outside what the dominate view of culture defines as right and wrong.

“Our book of morality is the Bible,” he said.

Having a homosexual orientation isn’t sinful, but acting on it is, Nicodem said. He pointed to the Book of Genesis, which he said describes God’s complementary – and not homogeneous – design of men and women.

“Complementarity is important because it reflects God’s image,” he said in his series. “A man and a man can’t become one flesh in the sense of reflecting the image of God who’s diversity in unity. A woman and a woman can’t become … a one-flesh reflection of the image of God because it requires both diversity and unity.”

While Daly said she hasn’t devoted any sermons to gay marriage since the law changed, the Congregational United Church of Christ has hosted exhibits with homosexual themes.

“For me personally, love comes from God, and God is love,” Daly said. “We, as humans, can’t put limits on God’s love.”

This year her church hosted the traveling photo exhibit “Love Makes A Family: Portraits of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People and Their Families,” and the Shower of Stoles Project is on display through September.

It is a collection of stoles representing the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of faith.

“They all have a story,” Daly said.

City prepares for Batavia High School’s homecoming parade Traffic closures set to be in effect for Wednesday event KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Motorists should be aware of traffic closures in downtown Batavia related to Batavia High School’s annual homecoming parade at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

To accommodate the parade, the Wilson Street bridge will be closed at 5:20 p.m., and the intersection of Route 31 and West Wilson Street will

be closed about 5:30 p.m. The parade will take about one hour.

Parade units will begin staging between 4:45 and 5 p.m. at North River and Spring streets. Any vehicles needing to get to the city’s west side from Route 25 and the East Wilson Street area will need to detour to Fabyan Parkway or head south and cross at Route 56 in North Aurora.

Vehicles needing to get to Randall Road from the downtown area should use McKee Street. Vehicles traveling east on West Wilson Street at Western Avenue will be detoured to go north on Western Avenue to McKee Street.

BATAVIA – Batavia Enterprises is seeking an extension of the redevelopment agreement for the proposed new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as it works out more details on the project.

Batavia aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting are set to discuss a request by Batavia Enterprises to seek a 120-day extension of both the redevelopment agreement and the real estate transfer agreement, which is part of the redevelopment agreement.

Batavia Enterprises needs the extension because it is trying to get its lease and financing finalized for the Walgreens project, Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said in a memo to aldermen

and Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza.

In an 8-4 vote, Batavia aldermen in February approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district. Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF to cover it.

Once a development project is completed and has been paid for, the TIF district is dissolved and the tax base is returned to full use by all eligible taxing bodies.

Total project costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated to reach about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of about $520,250. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

An Elgin man connected to robberies, which took place last year in North Aurora, St. Charles, South Elgin and Carpentersville, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Rodney W. Boyette, 51, of Elgin, recently pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery of a S u b w a y Rodney W. restaurant in Boyette Carpentersville on Nov. 7, 2013. He has been given credit for 294 days in the Kane County Jail.

In that incident, Boyette implied he had a weapon, demanded cash and then fled,

according to police. A witness provided police with the suspect’s vehicle information, and Boyette subsequently was tracked down and located a short time later by an Algonquin police officer.

Boyette also was charged with the Nov. 3, 2013, armed robbery of a Subway restaurant in the 500 block of South Randall Road in St. Charles and an aggravated robbery Oct. 31, 2013, at Jun’s Mobil in North Aurora. He also was charged in a robbery on Nov. 1, 2013, at BP Amoco in South Elgin.

He also has been ordered to pay restitution in the robberies, including $407.28 to the Subway in Carpentersville, $250 to the Subway in St. Charles, $384 to Jun’s Mobil and $600 to the BP Amoco.

Young individuals and newlyweds, in my opinion, typically do not need wills.

Statistically speaking, it is unlikely for younger people (individuals in their 20s, 30s and 40s) to pass away.

Additionally, most young individuals or newlyweds have little to no assets, and the assets they do possess often pass outside of probate as an operation of law or in accordance with the Probate Act’s rules of descent and distribution.

However, my opinion changes drastically when minor children are involved.

Yes, the statistics still are very low that both parents will pass, but it does happen. And, unlike property, the law does not provide an automatic guardian for the minor children. So, what happens in the instance when both parents pass and they did not appoint an eligible and willing guardian in writing?

The most common outcome is at least one family

IN YOUR COURT Anthony Scifo member will petition the court to be appointed as guardian of the minor children.

One can act as a guardian if the court finds the petitioner is capable to provide “an active and suitable program of guardianship for the minor” and who is also at least 18 years old, a United States resident, of sound mind, not adjudicated as a disabled person as defined by the Probate Act, and, in most instances, not a convicted felon.

However, the matter can become extremely hostile and expensive when two or more family members petition to be appointed as the guardian of the minor children.

Does the writing appointing the guardian have to be a will?

Comfort

No. But Illinois law states, “If the designation is executed and attested in the same manner as a will, it shall have prima facie validity.”

It is not particularly expensive for a young couple to have a simple will drafted and executed (a few hundred dollars).

Often, the attorney also will include medical powers of attorney in the event something happens. These aren’t fun things to contemplate, but it comes with the responsibility of being a parent.

KANEVILLE TOWNSHIP – Describing it as “a place of healing, hope and celebration,” Carol Alfrey, the executive director of Conley Outreach Community Services, on Monday announced Conley Farm will be put up for sale.

For more than 15 years, the farm has hosted events such as grief events, a children’s prayer garden, weddings and family events. Many events were sponsored by Conley Outreach. Alfrey said an event – Farewell to the Farm – has been set from 3 to 6 p.m. Sept.

28 at 47W085 Main Street Road in Kaneville Township. Alfrey said guests will be welcome to walk through the gardens and grounds, make s’mores or “spend a little time on the bridge to give thanks for all the ways this farm has blessed our community.”

Conley family members could not be reached Monday for comment about details of the sale. A news release issued

by Alfrey indicated it is a “necessary business decision and one that was not made lightly.”

Alfrey stressed that Conley Outreach still will continue with its programs, including bell-ringing for The Salvation Army during Christmas season. But some of the grief events that were hosted by the farm, including a week-long grief camp for kids, must be held in a different location. Alfrey said it was important to make the announcement in advance. She said the farewell event is intended to be a celebration. best means of communication. Renting tables close by made delivery a bit easier, too. I even had a few shop owners come over and purchase some of the vintage items for their businesses.

Fourth – pack. Check.

While we chose to do this ourselves, we still had to buy packing materials.

And when we ran out – places to buy boxes, storage bins and tape were very close by.

Fifth – paint and carpet the new place. Check.

Working with businesses that were familiar with my dad’s new complex made the process very simple. Color selection and quality were excellent, and the customer service was second-tonone. The unit was move-in ready.

Sixth – move. Check.

While he was only moving across town – and we certainly could have accomplished this – hiring a reputable, bonded and insured moving company was absolutely the way to go. Efficient, neat and quick.

Seventh – celebrate. Ongoing. I am not opposed to extending our “pats on the back” for a couple of months.

There are certainly enough tempting places to self-congratulate ourselves at.

For six weeks, our lives were a bit turned upside down.

Nevertheless, knowing all the services or businesses I would need were within a five mile radius – and good people to work with – made this life-changing/emotional time in my dad’s life a great adventure.

A smooth move to new memories.

Memories that will be made at a different street address, but in the same hometown.

On June 23, I received a phone call. The voice on the other end was my father, with the news that he had decided to downsize. Swedish Days had just ended the day before, so my mind was still a little fuzzy. I wasn’t sure I heard him correctly as I had been “gently encouraging” him to this day for the last five years.

I had all but given up hope and come to the conclusion that his first home would be his only home.

Don’t misunderstand me.

This was the home I grew up in.

Many happy celebrations and great times were had there, but my dad just didn’t need all the upkeep of the space or the lawn.

Once I was certain I had heard him correctly, a rousing “hallelujah” echoed from my lips and I sprang into action.

I had moved before; most people have moved before; but my dad had lived in that home for 45 years, and he bought it from the owner.

In anyone’s world a lot had changed since then in the moving arena, but in his world “move” was a four-letter word.

Sure, this was not the summer I thought I would have; however, lucky for me, I had phenomenal local businesses to utilize and the business directory on the genevachamber.com to make it seamless.

Yes, I really did use it and keep it all local.

First – find a realtor to help us sell and buy. Check. Successfully sold his house, without even having to list it.

Luck was on our side. He wanted to stay in Geneva, not surprising as my family doesn’t move away, so a condo – in an over-55 complex – was found that was just perfect.

Second – clean out/sort/ throw away four decades worth of stuff. Check.

A 20-yard dumpster, rented twice, through Geneva’s refuse company. Easy and hassle-free.

Third – have a garage sale. Check.

Up, up and away

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kite pro Dave Zavell maneuvered a dual line stunt kite, tugging a string in each hand so that it soared and dipped against a perfect azure sky.

Zavell, owner of Chicago Kite, which hosted the fourth annual Kite Festival on Saturday at the Peck Farm Park Athletic fields, kept his kite aloft alongside an assortment of all types: smiley faces, butterflies, “Little Mermaids,” spirals, swirls and one-eyed space aliens, in all colors on a variety shapes, from triangles to boxes.

Matthew Conrad, 12, flew his kite so high, he ran out of string in his spindle. The seventh-grader at Geneva Middle School North was with his sister, Jenna, 10 and mother, Lisa. Although the bright and sunny day also had nice wind, it was not enough to keep Jenna’s kite aloft. It crashed.

The Conrads were among many families that came to the event. Some brought their own kites, while others bought those offered for sale or used the free paper kite kits the company gave away.

They sat at a neighboring picnic table to assemble it.

“She called me and said this sounds nice, why not?”

Peknik said, as he watched the other kites while his sister tried to fly their newly assembled kite.

The kite began a promising ascent, then promptly dropped to the ground as the breeze died down.

“She needs to catch the wind,” Peknik said as his sister gave it another try.

Dalia Cardona of Chicago and her son Alexander, 6, flew a pterodactyl kite. The flying dinosaur was never so color-

ful in life as a kite arrayed in purple, red and yellow.

“He had a kite to fly, so I said, ‘Let’s go,’ ” Cardona said as Alexander’s pterodactyl soared, dipped, then smacked beak first into a light pole before crashing. After a moment of string winding, the pterodactyl was quickly airborne again.

Three generations of a Geneva family also flew kites at the festival: Adam and Stephanie Rechkemmer with daughters Lila, 5, and Cami 2; Stephanie’s sister Nicole Tucker and four sons: Beckett, 5, Levi, 4, Cole, 2, and Bode, 6 weeks; and grandma Leigh Poulos of Elburn.

“We love it,” Stephanie Rechkemmeer said, keeping an eye on her girls.

Lila fell backward with a thump but never let go of the kite string. She did not cry, and the kite stayed flying.

“If the kite had fallen, there would have been tears,” her mother said.

Mutual inaction THE WASHINGTON POST House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told Republicans they would make a “closing argument” to midterm election voters in the session of Congress that began Monday. It’s shaping up to be a lousy one. On the other hand, the Democrat-controlled Senate is not likely to do much better.

Operating on the notion that the public prefers political theater to authentic accomplishments, the House and Senate are preparing to achieve almost nothing when they reconvene.

Instead of passing bills into law and allowing voters to judge their work, the legislators appear to be pushing hopes of any serious lawmaking off into the safety of a post-election, lameduck session – and that’s if they move relatively quickly.

In a memorandum sent to House Republicans on Thursday, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy promised a “busy September.” The GOP, he wrote, will bundle together and pass again a series of bills that the House approved earlier but that never made headway in the Senate. Repackaging and restamping defunct bills doesn’t sound like much work to us.

And Republicans don’t have to worry about the Senate sending any of the bundles back for final consultations before they go to the president’s desk. They contain so many proposals that are both unwise and toxic to Democrats, such as blocking environmental regulations, that the Senate will dismiss them for what they are: measures meant to make Republicans appear as though they are advancing a conservative agenda when, in fact, they are advancing nothing at all.

Senate Democrats aren’t going to be above such maneuvering. The Post’s Ed O’Keefe reports that Senate leaders might hold votes on bills calcu-

lated to appeal to women and working-class voters – if not to pass Congress. The Senate, for example, could vote on raising the federal minimum wage or on an expensive student loan refinancing scheme, neither of which have a chance in the GOP House.

It’s too easy to dismiss the dueling bill-passing as the natural results of deep party disagreement. There are many areas of prime national concern on which the parties have the capacity to agree now. These include reforming National Security Agency spying, adjusting the patent system, repairing the Voting Rights Act, shoring up the U.S. Postal Service and adding protections to private data saved online in cloud storage and email services such as Gmail. If they grew a little backbone, legislators could even tackle major issues such as transportation funding, a matter on which the right answers are known and favored by members of both parties.

Congress will have to accomplish one thing upon reconvening: passing a stopgap budget measure to keep the government open. President Barack Obama might also consult lawmakers about broader military action against Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.

But barely seeing to essential congressional responsibilities in order to invest heavy amounts of time in useless political statement-making – that is plain legislative dysfunction of which the leadership on both sides of the Capitol are guilty.

Polls show that voters are deeply dissatisfied with Congress, and they have every reason to be. But they also are ultimately responsible. It is up to them to elect lawmakers who prefer to shake hands and pass legislation rather than waste time in the sort of cynical positioning Washington will see over the next several weeks.

As the executive director of the Les Turner ALS Foundation, I am invigorated by this campaign, as it provides hope to the ALS community – hope that the dialogue around ALS will continue and funding will increase, long after the Ice Bucket Challenge has ended.

Critics of the campaign have said it fails to move the needle on awareness, so for those unsure of what ALS is, it’s a neuromuscular disorder that attacks a person’s muscles, gradually robbing them of their ability to walk, speak, eat and breathe, yet usually keeping their mind intact.

Currently, there is no preven-

tion or cure.

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@shawmedia.com AURORA – The noise inside Rosary’s gym was deafening, with every point seemingly giving one side the momentum it needed to finally put the other away.

It the end, it was St. Charles East that came out on top in a thrilling 29-27, 27-25 girls volleyball victory over Rosary on Monday night.

After trailing, 6-0, early in the second game, the Saints (7-1) made the adjustments and stormed back, taking a 9-8 lead. Rosary hung around all game after trailing, 16-11, but never retook the lead.

Saints outside hitter Meagan Smith had a couple crucial kills down the stretch, while Kyla Augustine and Megan Schildmeyer stood tall at the net, creating several tandem blocks.

The Royals staved off match point four times, capitalizing on East’s mistakes to tie the score at 24-24 and again at 25-25.

But after a failed serve attempt by Rosary libero Martha Konovodoff in which she stepped over the line without hitting the ball, the Saints reclaimed the lead and finally put it away on the next point.

After a solid volley between the teams, Rosary middle hitter Michaela Ping looked for the kill on the near baseline, but the ball went just out, giving the Saints the victory.

Saint Charles East coach Jennie Kull gave plenty of credit to the opposition and wondered if her team was fatigued from the Conant Invitational over the weekend, where her side lost in the championship match to St. Francis.

Kull said the adjustments her team made after falling behind early in both games helped the team get the win, but said it’s still a learning experience.

“We talk about controlling the ball and making sure we’re not making the errors,” Kull said. “That’s the biggest thing, our focus being controlling and where we need to go, and that helps us to be a little more

Although the Saints came out on the winning side, it easily could have been the hosts winning in straight games.

After dropping both games despite early leads, Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann remained optimistic and said developing the killer instinct will come in time for her young team.

“They’re young girls and when they start learning the situation, I think the game will go a different way,” Hartmann said. “Obviously St. Charles is a great team and I’ve been begging these girls to start playing confident. They’ve been young

and a little scared at times, and I think that after the loss they’re going to start building that and getting better.”

In the first set, the Royals jumped all over the Saints, opening up a 10-3 lead. But East clawed back into the match after a timeout, finally tying the score at 16-16 before going ahead, 18-16.

Rosary was undeterred as the sides traded points before East had a set-point opportunity up 24-23. But Rosary’s frontcourt duo of Ping and Erin Burke came up with a huge block and recorded another two points later to put the Royals back on top, 25-24.

The game appeared to end there, when Ping batted down a weak hit, but the line judge ruled her hands had crossed over the line and awarded the point to the Saints.

Rosary retook the lead on the next play to go to another set point up, 26-25, but Molly Curley’s ensuing serve went straight into the net.

The Saints lost the next point and fought off another game point, rallying to win the next three and take the first game.

East’s refusal to lose and fast start to the season might have some looking to the big picture, but Kull insisted she just looks at games one at a time.

“They’re where they should be right now,” Kull said.

“They definitely have some things to get better on, but I’m pleased with where they are right now. But we have a lot of work to do. The only game I care about is the one tomorrow.”

Her players echoed her sentiments, with Schildmeyer saying that they’d need to improve to keep up with their early-season pace.

“We felt like we didn’t play our best tonight,” Schildmeyer said. “We have a couple games coming up against teams just like this or better and we’ll need to pick it up.”

With his wife inducing labor on the couple’s second child last week, Richards coach Tony Sheehan shuttled in and out of practice and game prep for the Bulldogs’ visit to Geneva.

It was nothing new. Sheehan’s young son was born in the middle of the 2012 season, and Sheehan’s comfort with his staff’s aptitude alleviated any discomfort about leaving the team this time around.

“This isn’t our first rodeo,” Sheehan said. “Everyone kind of knows we all have our roles, so I’m not worried when I’m not there. Everything’s under control.”

Vikings counterpart Rob Wicinski shares that sentiment about his longtime supporting cast of assistants, although he never had to channel them for the birth for any of his three daughters.

Wicinski and his wife, Gina, welcomed each child into the world during the prep football offseason.

A savvy case of family planning, coach?

“I’d like to say it was,” Wicinski chuckled, “but yeah, none of them were born during football season. Not anything to do with me, put it that way.”

Cougars sweep Kernels, advance to championship series GENEVA – The Cougars have found so many different ways to win this season that, by now, it’s hard to find shock value in their methods.

Sunday’s 4-2 win against Cedar Rapids, clinching a two-game sweep in the Midwest League Western Division finals, might have done the trick.

Light-hitting shortstop Carlos Penalver, who entered play Sunday with one home run in 478 at-bats, uncorked a goahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh that gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

Penalver’s batting average had drooped to .211 through a woeful second half of the season offensively, although his glovework has remained impressive.

The Cougars, having swept Wisconsin and Cedar Rapids in the first two rounds of the Midwest League playoffs, are headed for their first berth in the Midwest League Championship Series since 2006, when they fell to West Michigan. The best-of-5 series against Lake County – the Cleveland Indians’ Midwest League affiliate – will open with games in Geneva on Wednesday and Thursday before shifting to Eastlake, Ohio, for the conclusion of the series, beginning with Game 3 on Saturday.

Cougars second baseman Chesny Young led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk against Kernels reliever Jared Wilson. Penalver showed bunt on the first pitch of the at-bat but pulled back to take a ball, then drilled his two-run shot to left field on a hit-and-run.

“I haven’t been offensively what I would like to,” Penalver said through a translator. “But of course now it’s playoff time, and I’m really glad to be able to contribute and to be able to put something into it and help the team win.”

Like Penalver, Cougars starting pitcher Paul Blackburn is among a handful of Cougars who have been aboard throughout a transaction-thick season. Blackburn turned in arguably his sharpest outing of the season Sunday, although the right-hander had to settle for five innings of work as he flirts with his season innings limit established by the Cubs.

in 2012, featured a dynamic curveball in allowing only one hit and fanning seven in five shutout innings.

“He’s had a good one lately but it’s either hit or miss, either kind of up in the zone or in the dirt,” Johnson said. “Tonight, he just had that feel. He could throw it where he wanted to, and same thing with his fastball and his changeup. When you’ve got all three working, those outings can happen.”

Blackburn said he and his teammates aren’t taking this championship push for granted.

“You never know if you’re ever going to get there again, no matter what level you’re at,” Blackburn said.

For every convenience-challenged player development contract in the 16-team MWL – namely Clinton (Iowa) and the Seattle Mariners – there are a few arrangements that hit closer to home.

Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Brewers are one of those examples.

Lake County general manager Brad Seymour describes the Indians-Captains connection as a “mutually beneficial” one that’s always ongoing.

On Monday morning, Seymour negotiated with Indians counterparts for some in-game announcements and video displays about the Captains’ weekend home games against the Cougars during

“Being an Indians affiliate certainly has its benefits in this market, and we do take full advantage of that,” Seymour said. “We market ourselves, in everything that we do, as the Class-A affiliate of the Indians, and just try to piggyback on their brand.”

This week’s campaigns center more on baseball than zany promotions, and why not? Lake County boasts the Indians’ past two first-round draft picks in right fielder Bradley Zimmer (21st overall, 2014) and center fielder Clint Frazier (fifth, 2013).

During the regular season, Lake County averaged 3,484 fans in 65 openings, ranked ninth in the league.

“We’ve never viewed the Indians as competition,”

Seymour said. “There’s been plenty of nights where we’re both home on a Friday night.

We have a sold-out crowd, and they do well, too.”

Budzinski, 41, also knows about the importance of crunching numbers. A minor league outfielder for five organizations over 11 seasons – including the Cubs in 2002 – he is a licensed realtor in Virginia and was in private business before rejoining the organization that drafted him, the Indians.

As his professional coaching debut season winds down, Budzinski is quickly reminded of one of his final stops as a player. Like the Captains, the Cubs’ Double-A West Tennessee affiliate gained steam after rocky beginnings in ’02.

“We struggled the first half with that team and second half put it together and ended

up getting into the playoffs,” Budzinski said.

“Kind of persevering and keeping with the process and content to work hard and giving our players the opportunity to play in the playoffs.”

For one side, there also comes the opportunity to enjoy the potential dress rehearsal of winning a title.

The Cubs and Indians keep their Class-A affiliates close to home, but the parent organizations aren’t so far away when it comes to championship droughts. It’s 1908 for the Cubs and 1948 for the Indians, the two longest in the major leagues.

Decisions by individual runners on running pace, passing opponents and keeping up with teammates have the most impact on how a team places in the meet.

The St. Charles East girls

and boys teams made the most of their running tactics at the Jeff Leavey Invitational on Saturday at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve. East’s girls won the race with 58 points. The boys took second with 91 points.

Batavia (90), Barrington (96), Geneva (99) and York (123) rounded out the top five girls teams. St. Charles North came in seventh place (164).

Downers Grove North won the boys side with a score of 53.

Completing the top five teams were Jacobs (124), Batavia (127) and Waubonsie Valley (163).

Furniture made from recycled workbenches and school lockers, or huge metal parts from factory machines is not a new idea. Our ancestors recycled clothing into quilts, tin advertising signs into patches for a leaky roof and cattle horns into Victorian chairs. The earliest horn furniture was made in Germany in the 1830s, and by the late 1870s, it was being made in the United States. Slaughterhouses in Chicago had a huge supply of horns left over from the processing of meat. It is said that the Tobey Furniture Co. of Chicago exhibited a sofa and chair made with horn arms at the Chicago Exposition of 1876. Later they also used horns for the legs and backs with upholstered seats, forming furniture with the curving lines popular at the time. Horns from buffalo, elk and longhorn cattle, as well as antlers, were used for tables, hall trees, rocking chairs and footstools. This novel furniture lost favor, and by the 1890s was bought for hunting lodges and cabins. By 1900, horn chairs were considered old-fashioned and not often seen. But there was a revival of interest in the 1980s, and old pieces brought good prices at auctions. Today an antique piece of horn furniture made and signed by a famous maker, or one that shows exceptional skill with clever design and inlays, retails for over $10,000. Average pieces bring $1,000 to $2,000 or less.

That’s not a good answer. And why you’re thinking this is a good answer, I don’t know, but let’s talk about that for a minute. That’s never been done on a [game] show, where the host questions the person’s response. And I brought that to a game show business and I turned that into a really, really fun time. I’m not mean to any of the contestants. I’m only repeating back what you said, so if you said it, you can’t get mad at me for repeating it over and over and over.

His daytime talk show, which kicked off its third season Sept. 8, has thrived in an era in which similar ventures crash and burn (Katie Couric, Bethenny Frankel, Anderson Cooper and too many others to name). He won two Daytime Emmy awards, one for his talk show and another as Outstanding Game Show Host for the syndicated “Family Feud,” a franchise he’s largely credited with saving. “Think Like a Man Too,” the second movie in a franchise based on his best-selling relationship advice book, was a hit at the box office. He’s got a radio program, “The Steve Harvey Morning Show.” Plus, there’s another book coming out this fall, “Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success,” which he calls a “game-changer.”

He’s matter-of-fact about his impressive list of accomplishments, and why shouldn’t he be? Women follow his candid dating advice so closely that they frequently approach him on the street and ask, “Steve, can you find me a man?”

We got him on the phone a few weeks ago shortly after he landed in Chicago (he films his talk and radio shows there) and asked him about what’s left to conquer in the entertainment world.

Emily Yahr: So many daytime talk shows struggle and get canceled almost immediately. What sets yours apart?

Steve Harvey: I think the authenticity resonates with people for the most part, because I have opinions and I’m not afraid to say them and I don’t care if it’s politically correct or not. My thoughts on child-rearing, on dating, on relationships, on your boss, on your attitude about money, whatever it is. I’m not afraid to say it.

Yahr: The daytime talk show audience is mainly geared toward women, so what’s the most common thing you hear from women about why they like your show?

Harvey: The honesty resonates with them – a lot of times I hear that from women.

They’re interested in my take on a lot of different things. Because they know I’m going to be very honest, and they know that I speak from a position of realness, that I don’t give them canned answers. I don’t give them the answer that my publicist told me I should say, or my marketing guy told me I should say. I give it to them straight. I think that they enjoy smiling during the middle of the day.

Yahr: You cover such serious topics sometimes – people looking for missing loved ones, for example.

How do you walk that line between also making it funny?

Harvey: It’s tough because you gotta stay serious when it’s time to stay serious – I shed a couple tears on the show I wasn’t really looking for. Because some of it affects me, you know, I’m looking at

the person sitting here and I can feel their energy and they’re being very genuine and they’re really trying to pull it together. Or they’re really looking for somebody that they missed in their life, and I can relate to a person wanting something so badly and it’s not happening. ... But at the same time, I try to interject a little bit of humor when I can so we can keep everybody OK.

Yahr: When people see you on the street, do they corner you and try to ask for advice?

Harvey: The majority of things I get from women is, “Steve, can you find me a man?” That’s my No. 1 request. I say, “Well, you know, I can help you out, but I don’t know if I can find him. He’s going to find you.”

Yahr: You’re credited with saving “Family Feud” from cancellation in 2010. How do you inject your own personality into that show while still keeping the game running smoothly? Can you do it in your sleep at this point or is it challenging?

Harvey: It’s not a challenge at all, I’m doing the thing I was born to do. So, I think it was really, really important for me to interject more humor into the show. Every answer a person gives is not going to be on the board – I don’t care how hard the family is clapping, saying, “Good answer, good

Harvey: (Laughs.) I wish I could say that I did – that was the plan, but nah. [The publisher] told me that a huge literary book is 250,000 copies.

I told them I would sell 750,000 books. They laughed.

I heard them, they were saying: “Yeah, that’s really nice, Steve, yeah, sure. If we sell 100,000 copies we’re going to be very happy – 200,000 copies and we’re bananas.”

Well what is it now? At 3.8 million copies, a movie, two movies?

Yahr: And this new book will take the same approach, just not about relationships?

Harvey: This new book, let me tell you something: This book right here, it’s gonna be a game-changer. This book right here will transform so many lives because I’m talking to where the average person is.

And you know how I know that? Because I’ve been there.

See, I’ve fallen and thought I couldn’t get back up. I’ve been written off and told I wasn’t going to ever be nothing. I jumped and took a chance, a leap of faith. I’ve been homeless. I’ve been dead broke and I’ve been well off.

2. Decent men don’t want to see ALL of your physical attributes on these sites. Dress appropriately for your age.

Weight gain from taking antidepressant is usually small Dear Doctor K: My doctor thinks I could benefit from an antidepressant. But I’ve heard that antidepressants cause weight gain and I’m already overweight. Do any antidepressants cause less weight gain than others?

Dear Reader: Many of my patients have asked me that question. Like you, they were hesitating to take antidepressants because of the possibility they would gain weight.

And they’re right: Many antidepressants do cause weight gain in some people. The question has been how much weight gain they cause. A new study may calm those concerns. This large and long-term study shows that weight gain is usually small and differs little from one antidepressant to another.

The study was led by researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. It included more than 19,000 people and lasted for one year.

The men and women in the study took an antidepressant for at least three months. The types of antidepressants they took varied. They included tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and citalopram (Celexa); and serotonin and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) and venlafaxine (Effexor). The researchers checked each person’s weight every three months for a year.

People taking citalopram gained the most weight in the study – an average of one to two pounds. Weight gain linked to other antidepressants was even smaller. Tricyclic antidepressants caused the least weight gain, but these older drugs are no longer prescribed as frequently.

It’s also worth noting that not everyone taking an antidepressant gained weight. Some people actually lost a few pounds. Why is that? My guess is that some people eat more when they’re depressed – just as some people drink more. Some people “drown their sorrows” in food rather than drink. For such folks, lifting their depression with antidepressants leads them to eat less.

Some antidepressants, such as bupropion, are more likely to cause weight loss than weight gain. However, these antidepressants are not the best treatment for all people with depression.

Don’t let worries about weight gain affect your decision to take an antidepressant – or which one to choose. If you do start taking an antidepressant and notice some weight gain, try lifestyle changes. Eating a healthier diet and exercising regularly will not only get your weight back under control, but will have positive effects on your mood as well.

In fact, I have occasionally recommended a daily exercise program for several months as the first type of treatment for depression – before I prescribe antidepressants. There now is very strong evidence that regular exercise can, in some people, greatly improve depression. That may not sound plausible, but we’re learning that regular exercise can affect brain chemistry in a way that protects the brain not only from depression but also from dementia.

Finally, don’t expect to see a major improvement right away.

It often takes six to eight weeks to see a response. And don’t give up if the first antidepressant doesn’t work. Trying a different one may do the trick.

Teens: What’s in a tattoo? Is it more than just ink and needle marks on the skin? Is it also an announcement that the wearer is a teenager at risk?

Maybe so. A study by the University of Rochester shows that teens with tattoos are more likely to drink, be sexually active, get into fights and engage in other risky behavior.

The study was based on data from a national sample of 6,072 people ages 11 through 20. Of the sample, 4.5 percent reported having at least one tattoo. The members of this group were twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse and three times as likely to have smoked marijuana in the past month. They were also more likely to have done binge drinking; used tobacco products; belonged to a gang; skipped school; gotten poor grades; and been in serious fights, in which either they or their opponents sustained injuries requiring medical attention.

The study also found that teens with tattoos generally have parents with lower levels of education and tend to be from single-parent families. Also, family income is likely to be lower among teens with tattoos. Gender and race were not a major factor.

States have different laws about tattooing. In some states, it is illegal for anyone under 18 to get a tattoo without permission from a parent.

This seems to be most reasonable.

Dr. Wallace: I borrowed $500 from my parents to help me buy a car, which I needed to maintain my parttime job. I told them I’d

But if he continues to demand the $20, pay it to him. Family harmony is worth a whole lot more.

Also, remind Dad that if you do wind up paying him interest, you can deduct that amount if you file an income tax return – AND – he must add it to his income!

Yesterday, with the spade king in the dummy, declarer had to choose between the two. But now he can try both. He wins with his heart ace and tries dummy’s top clubs. When they split badly, South crosses back to his hand with a spade and runs the diamond queen. The odds of success have risen to 83.9 percent.
