Quad officials continue search for mall tenants

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The search for new tenants at the former Charlestowne Mall site continues more than one year after a groundbreaking event was held there.

“A group of leasing agents is still working on it, and The Krausz Companies still [is] very much involved,” project director Chuck May said.

The Krausz Companies Inc. plans to redevelop the mall into The Quad St. Charles, which is supposed to have new stores, restaurants and other offerings for shoppers. The tentative opening at the end of 2016 is dependent on the company’s leasing efforts, according to a city of St. Charles Web page devoted to the project.

The Krausz Companies Inc. bought the mall site, at 3800 E. Main St. in St. Charles, in November 2013 for more than $9.5 million.

The groundbreaking was Sept. 3, 2014.

During the past year, exterior work on the site was completed, and crews have left the interior largely untouched. Once the future tenant locations are finalized, an architect will be able to complete construction plans to submit to the city for review, according to the city’s Web page.

Discussions with prospective tenants continue behind the scenes, but activity at places, such as Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora have affected The Quad St. Charles development,

May confirmed. On Aug. 27, the outlet mall held a grand opening for 30 new and expanded stores, with an additional 2,200 parking spaces on the property.

“It’s a very competitive environment right now, and that is some of the problem,” May said.

The Quad St. Charles’ anchor tenants will be some of its current stores – Carson Pirie Scott, Kohl’s, Von Maur and the Classic Cinemas Charlestowne 18 movie theater.

The lack of activity has prompted residents to contact Rita Payleitner, one of the St. Charles aldermen in

Ward 2, where the mall is located. Payleitner in an email wrote she tells residents The Krausz Companies Inc. continues to spend money on the project and remains invested.

Payleitner wrote May and The Krausz officials remain available and take her calls, which is “above and beyond” what previous mall owners have offered.

“As you know, the city [of St. Charles] has spent no money on the mall redevelopment, [and] our offer of a partnership continues, but there’s only so much we can do at this point,” Payleitner wrote.

True Blue Rally uplifts police

‘Let’s get together and show them support’

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In the wake of a police officer killed in Fox Lake and months of unrest and police protests, about 50 people attended a True Blue Support Rally on Sunday in front of the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

Wearing a T-shirt proclaiming, “Real women wear blue,” Regina White of Geneva said she came to support police in the face of recent events.

“My [late] husband was a Chicago policeman for 30 years. My brother and godson are on the force, so every time they go on the street, they’re putting their lives on the line,” White said, her voice breaking with emotion. “People have to support them.”

“My brother is a police officer in the Chicago suburbs, and I just feel like the silent majority need to break the silence, for people [to show] their support for police officers in a more visible and vocal way,” Diano said. “I have had a very heavy heart over the past year with all the ... negativity toward police officers … . Let’s get together and show them support.”

Colleen Bailey of St. Charles said she came to show support for her husband, James, a police officer in Elgin.

Shawn Campbell of St. Charles said she came after she heard about the rally at Calvary Baptist Church in Geneva after the Rev. Rich Weesner led a prayer in support of law enforcement.

We want to help protect those who protect us.”

Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash was among several in law enforcement at the rally.

“This past year has been rough for law enforcement as a whole. With what’s going on in Fox Lake, obviously, it hits very close to home,” Nash said. “I want to make sure that we pass on our condolences

to the Fox Lake department, the community of Fox Lake, the family of ‘G.I. Joe.’ Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

“G.I. Joe” was the nickname of Fox Lake Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz, 52, who was shot and killed Sept. 1.

“We train for responding to domestic situations. We train for vehicles stops. We train for all that stuff. We don’t train for people to not like us. We don’t train for people to spew venom at us,” Nash said.

“When you have an event like this, it just shows that the people who are spewing the venom are the few,” Nash said. “The majority are just silent right now, and they’re tired of it. And I think they are starting to speak up. An event like this shows that they’re tired of it. And they support – not the Geneva Police Department – but law enforcement as a whole. This is about law enforcement and their safety in the job that they do day in and day out.”

E

ver since she was a young girl, Karen Werrbach had a dream to become a nurse.

“I knew I’ve always wanted to care for people, and nursing is a wonderful profession,” said Werrbach, currently the director of the Women’s Health Institute at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

As a Larkin High School alumnus and current Elgin Township resident, Werrbach wanted to begin her nursing studies at a place close to home.

That place for her was Elgin Community College.

In 1949, there were 33 nurses at the then-Sherman Hospital in Elgin who enrolled at the college to take general classes, such as biology and anatomy, Sawyer said.

in 1967, and the cost of tuition at the time was $6 a credit hour, said Wendy Miller, the college’s dean of health professions.

The college’s current cost a credit hour for in-district students is $119 – not including books and fees – but in recent years the school has had much more to offer students. In 2012, the college’s Nursing Education Wing and Simulation Center opened.

The center is state-of-the-art and part of a larger $48 million building project on campus that includes space for 14 other health profession programs and a biology area, Miller said.

The simulation center looks to the future but also honors the past. The central nursing station in the center is named after Dr. Richard Powers and his family, Sawyer said. Powers was a cardiothoracic sur-

geon at Sherman Hospital, a local advocate for nursing education and instrumental in helping the college launch its nursing program, she said.

Instructors use the simulation center to place students into scenarios as if they were working with live patients. The activities also are filmed so students can review what interventions they used and whether the steps they took were the right ones, Miller said.

The simulation center addresses everything from drawing blood to a cardiac arrest event, she said.

Third-semester student Matt Miller wants to be a cardiac nurse in a hospital after he graduates. In addition to the technology, the St. Charles resident said he likes the guidance he gets from his nursing program instructors.

“They go above and beyond to help you with whatever you are doing,” Matt Miller said.

Jennifer Lindquist taught Werrbach at the school in the early 1980s, and also was an instructor 20 years later to one of Werrbach’s daughters, Corey Laster of Elburn.

Laster is a staff nurse at an outpatient infusion clinic at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. She said her mother, Werrbach, inspired her to go to nursing school.

“My mom, she’d be my study buddy all the time,” said Laster, a St. Charles High School alumnus. “And what she did for me is what I do now for my sister, Katelynn [studying at Chamberlain College of Nursing in Chicago].”

ELBURN – Decked out in a “city of Toyland” police outfit, 6-year-old Elburn resident Gianni Middona was happy to spread blue paint Saturday on the windows of businesses in downtown Elburn.

About 75 kids, parents and others gathered at the Elburn Police Station as part of a “Paint the Town Blue” effort, launched by 9-year-old Elburn resident Connor Anderson, who said he was upset after hearing about the recent death of a Fox Lake police officer.

Anderson invited people to come to the police station to pick up ribbons, paint and chalk to be used to decorate the downtown area in the village, as well as the campuses of Kaneland John Stewart and Blackberry Creek elementary schools.

He said he was happy with the turnout. His mother, Kim,

“For a person of his age, I think he has shown a lot of maturity and insight into issues that affect law enforcement,” Smith said Friday. “He’s got an interest in it. On his mom’s side, there are police officers in the family. He wants to become a police officer.”

Connor Anderson wasn’t the only kid at Saturday’s event with such aspirations.

Middona waved at police cars while in his play uniform, and his mother, Miranda, said this wasn’t a one-time opportunity for him to dress like a police officer.

“He wears it every day after school,” she said. “After school, he changes right into it.”

She said when she learned of Connor Anderson’s effort through a Facebook post, she knew she needed to participate and that her son would want to be a part of it.

“He adores the police officers,” she said.

ECC’s Latino Hertiage Month kicks off with ‘Chuy’ Garcia ELGIN – When the Latino Heritage Month Committee at Elgin Community College brainstormed names of those who emulate this year’s theme – Celebrating 25 Years of Progress, Growth, and Opportunity – Jesús “Chuy” Garcia made the short list of possible keynote speakers for the kickoff breakfast.

Amybeth Maurer, director of orientation and student life, said it was surprisingly easy to secure the former Chicago mayoral candidate for the event.

“He was available and agreed,” she said. “This all fell into place really nicely.”

Latino Heritage Month, which Elgin Community College celebrates through Oct. 15, recognizes the contributions made by Latinos and creates awareness about important issues in the Latino community.

The kickoff breakfast is set from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday in Building E, the University and Business Center, on the Elgin campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. In addition to Garcia’s keynote address, Maurer said that event will feature Peruvian music and artwork from a local artist.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maria; three siblings, Tyler Corbitt, Stacey (Paul) Horvath and their children, Josephine and Laszlo; Robin (Melanie) Corbitt and their children, Delaney and Griffin; and a close family of friends.

Surviving are her husband, Mark of Pekin; one daughter, Elizabeth (Chris) Marlow of Orland Park, IL; two sons, Brian (Heather) Glesne and Kurt (Stacey) Glesne both of Pekin; eight grandchildren, Sophia, Gavin and Chase Marlow, Lucas, Emily, Taylor, Elle and Vivian Glesne; three brothers, Richard (Linda) Lewis of Geneva, IL, Philip (Maureen) Lewis of St. Charles, IL and Tom Lewis of Tualatin, OR; two sisters, Barbara Smith of Ontario, CA and Rhonda (William) Kochlefl of Winnetka, IL. Arlene was a 1969 graduate of St. Charles High School and a 1973 graduate of Western Illinois University with a B.A. in education.

She was a media center teacher at Cicero High School and a homebound teacher at Pekin Community High School.

Arlene was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and its Resurrection Choir. She was an avid golfer and was the Ladies Club Champion in 2006-2007 at Santa Lucia Country Club at Port St. Lucie, FL. She had served as President of the Celestial City Ladies Golf League and the Sunset Hills Ladies Golf League. She established a fund raising event, the Ladies Fall Classic to benefit Illinois Neurological Institute. She helped established the Boys Track and Field Booster Club at Pekin Community High School. She had been a volunteer for OSF St. Francis Hospice and enjoyed quilting.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Michael Andrejek officiating. There will be a Rosary service at 4:15 p.m. and visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory 2131 Velde Dr. Pekin.

Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Pekin.

Charles L. Cobb, age 82, of Geneva, IL, formerly of Waupun, WI, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015, of prostate cancer at Delnor Hospital, Geneva.

He was born May 28, 1933 in Friendship, WI to George and Marion (Cutler) Cobb. Charles grew up in Waupun, WI graduating from Waupun High School in 1951. He attended Oshkosh State College, graduating in 1955. During his senior year Charles served a small United Methodist Church in Juneau, WI. He then attended Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL earning his Master of Divinity degree. Charles served as Associate Minister of the Fort Atkinson, WI United Methodist Church while earning his degree.

He was appointed to the Lake Geneva United Methodist Church and served that church from 1959 until 1962.

In 1962 Charles married Karen Ann Esmond of Lake Geneva and they moved to San Diego, CA where he worked for two years as a social worker with the Department of Welfare. He then attended San Diego State where he obtained a Masters Degree of Social Work.

He and Karen returned to Wisconsin where he served as Chief Psychiatric Social Worker at Racine County Hospital for eight years.

They moved to Geneva, IL in 1974 where he worked as a school social worker in Glen Ellyn, IL. He was the only school social worker for nine schools when he was hired but the majority of his career he was employed at Hadley Junior High School in Glen Ellyn. He worked for District 41 for 32 years before retiring in 2006. From 1974 until 1985, while employed as a school social worker, he also served as Associate Minister at the Geneva, IL United Methodist Church. Charles loved his family, his grandchildren, traveling, tennis and his work.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Karen; daughter, Kimberly (Doug) Olson of Geneva; son, Steven (Jill) of Cedarburg, WI; grandchildren - who all lovingly called him “Gink” - Cassandra Olson of Berwyn, Kevin Olson of Chicago and Hannah and Abbey

Cobb of Cedarburg; and many dear friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Jean.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the Geneva United Methodist Church, 211 Hamilton Street from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva at a later date.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles is marking the 75th anniversary of its Municipal Building with a celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday inside of the building, which is located at 2 E. Main St. in St. Charles The event will include a presentation from 1 to 1:15 p.m. to St. Charles resident Mike Dixon regarding the 2015 Charles Nothnagel Award for Public Service from the American Institute of Architects Illinois Council, according to a news release.

Dixon, an architect and longtime volunteer serving numerous civic organizations both locally and internationally, was instrumental in the St. Charles Municipal Building being named to the National Register of Historic Places, the release states.

Dixon also was the principal architect on the atrium annex that connected the 1940s Municipal Building with the original 1890s city building,

according to the release.

After the presentation and until 3 p.m. Saturday, there will be guided tours of the Municipal Building and an architectural treasure hunt for children to learn facts about the building’s history and design.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, attendees can come to the St. Charles History Museum, 215 E. Main St., St. Charles, for an exhibit, “A Look at Zook,” dedicated to the Municipal Building’s principal architect. The exhibit will be open through Nov. 28.

Residents also can participate in a Municipal Building Trivia Contest, testing their knowledge of the city’s history online at www.stcharlesil. gov/news/2015/08/31/showyour-st-charles-history-iq-municipal-building-trivia-contest. Participants can win a $10 chamber of commerce gift certificate.

The event was cosponsored by the Fox Valley Folklore Society, Geneva Park District and the city of Geneva.

Temperatures in the 90s did not deter families from coming to Island Park for the festival.

Among them were Stacy and Bob Yelaska of St. Charles with their 3-year-old son, William.

“It’s a nice way to get out with the family and listen to some wonderful music,” Bob Yelaska said. “We like all kinds of music, and you get to see all kind here – and storytelling.

And we love our son to be exposed to it.”

“What I like is when they take an old story and put a new twist on it,” Stacy Yelaska said of the storytellers. “We heard the story of the Big Bad Wolf, but instead of getting eaten by the wolf in the end, she took out the wolf in the end – she took him out with her .45.”

The festival also hosted vendors selling food and folk craft items – as well as politics.

Jessica Birk and Ken Shehorn, both of Sandwich, were among several at the The Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice booth.

“I stop at their booth every year to buy bumper stickers,” Birk said. “ My car is full of them, and I feel like I’m spreading my thoughts and hopes through them. I’ve got, ‘We were all immigrants once,’ and: ‘You laugh because I’m different. I laugh because you’re all the same.’ I probably have $20 worth of bumper stickers here.”

Also at the The Fox Valley Citizens’ booth, Derrek Montoya of Geneva signed a Move to Amend petition. The petition is part of a national movement to amend the U.S. Constitution to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.

“I’m one of millions of citizens across the United States that think money should stay out of politics, for the most part,” Montoya said. “I think our country is better than that.”

Campaign 2016’s mixed outlook THE WASHINGTON POST Once, Labor Day marked the traditional kickoff for the presidential election season. Labor Day of election year, that is – and 2016, in this case. That seems a quaint tradition when we are in the midst of a campaign that already seems to have gone on forever and still has forever to go, even before the first Iowans shovel their front paths for the first caucus-goers in February.

Nonetheless, Labor Day 2015 seems as good a time as any to take stock of the campaign so far.

And the news is, well, good and bad.

In both parties, genuine contests are underway; so much for worries that political dynasts on either side would stroll to convention coronations. Those who feared big money would decide everything have been proven wrong, too. All is not well in the world of campaign finance – the upsurge in secret giving is particularly troubling – but the best-funded candidates (the aforementioned dynasts, for example) are struggling, and billionaire-free candidacies (like that of Sen. Bernie Sanders) are finding a way to be heard.

It strikes us as refreshing that the shape of the race today could not have been predicted by anyone a year ago. And big issues are being talked about: inequality, slow economic growth, the danger of Islamist terrorism, the challenge of an authoritarian China.

On the other hand, the nature of the debate has often been less than uplifting. A common narrative of the campaign thus far is Americans are fed up with elites, with the establishment, with politics-as-usual, and therefore they have fastened on candidates who can best claim “outsider” status: Sanders on the Democratic side, Donald Trump among Republicans. These candidates don’t have much in common, but they agree the system is broken and villains can be identified: billionaires

hijacking our democracy, immigrants grabbing U.S. jobs, foreign powers bamboozling our leaders.

The casting of blame is simplistic, if hardly new to American politics. It’s true Washington hasn’t worked well lately, but it’s also true the problems are complicated and hard to solve, certainly not solvable by scapegoating.

The challenge of fairly sharing resources as the population ages and the economy slows – for reasons that are not well understood – can only be met through politics-as-usual: through the giveand-take between Democrats and Republicans. Yet politicians (such as Sen. Ted Cruz, for example) can sabotage any possibility of compromise and then run against a process that’s faltering in part because of them.

Most dispiriting, although also not unfamiliar, is the effort to win votes by demonizing foreigners and immigrants, Trump’s specialty. His popularity, which we doubt will endure, has been built on demeaning rivals and exploiting voter fears.

Fortunately – to swing back around to some good news – not everyone in the Republican field is quailing. When Trump rebuked Jeb Bush last week for speaking at a campaign event in Spanish, Bush admirably explained why the rebuke was off base.

“This is a diverse country,” the former Florida governor told ABC News. “We should celebrate that diversity and embrace a set of shared values. Trump doesn’t believe in those shared values.

He wants to tear us down. He doesn’t believe in tolerance. He doesn’t believe in the things that have created the greatness of this country.”

And Bush made a prediction, which, despite the peculiarities of the season so far, we are happy to second: “Donald Trump is trying to insult his way to the presidency. It’s not gonna work.

People want an uplifting, hopeful message.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ARE WE DOING ENOUGH? To the Editor:

The Kane County Chronicle just ran a two-part series on mental health.

There is some great work being done in the county, as evidenced by the effort of Associate Judge T. Clint Hull in the Treatment Alternative Court. But resources are limited.

This is what happens when taxpayers refuse to pay for the services the community so desperately needs. When a politician’s only strategy is “no tax increase,” they may as well be saying, “I will cut services to people that don’t vote.” We need to stop blaming the ineptitude in Springfield and work to solve these issues closer to

home.

Kane County’s health department offers no direct services for mental health or substance abuse. These are offered by health departments in Will, DuPage and Lake counties. There is no specific countywide tax to support individuals with mental health, substance abuse and developmental disabilities. St. Charles and Geneva each have a 708 Board (commonly called a mental health board), and the other cities and townships in the southern half of the county also fund this effort and administer funds through the INC Board. There are no taxpayer-supported services from 708 Boards in Kane County north of St. Charles.

It is beyond time that

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

each Kane County resident look in the mirror and ask if we are doing enough to help those less fortunate in Kane County. The answer should be no – not even close. The public spoke very clearly in March 2014 when they voted against a – depending on home value – $70 annual property tax increase to help our neighbors with developmental disabilities. I can only hope we are now more compassionate.

I urge you all to contact your local elected officials, particularly the Kane County Board, and let them know your outrage at the lack of support available locally. I think we are all better than this.

Cougars ‘just fighting hard’ with playoffs here

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars radio broadcaster Joe Brand sporadically repeated a potentially disconcerting phrase during his call of Monday’s regular season finale against Peoria.

“This game,” he said, “means nothing.”

If it sounded like Brand suddenly was getting existential with listeners on AM1280 and kccougars.com, he wasn’t. The Chiefs’ 6-5 victory simply satisfied baseball’s longtime corollary that somebody has to win.

Look for the tone and atmosphere to shift considerably at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when Kane County and Peoria open a best-of-three, first-round Midwest League playoff series at the Chiefs’ Dozier Park. For whatever it’s worth, though, the Cougars, the MWL’s top second-half team, took two of three over the holiday weekend.

“It’s more of a blessing than anything else, because we had these three games to figure out what we need to do,” left-hander Josh Taylor said. “They mean something, but they mean more for us since we’re where we’re at now, to know what we’re going to do for the next three games in the playoffs.”

On Sunday, Kane County (48-22 second half, 84-54 overall) set a franchise record for most wins in one half of a season. Yes, even the 2014 Cougars, who blazed their way to a league title with an unbeaten postseason run, weren’t as dominant over a 70-game

Remember when the 2015 Cougars started 11-17 and struggled to find consistency on the mound and at the plate well into May? Despite the usual rounds of mid- and late-season roster roulette, many in the clubhouse do, which only has sweetened the ongoing run.

“Some guys were tight, and this was some guys’ first full season, so they didn’t really know. (It was) some guys’ first year in pro ball,” Cougars third baseman Joe Munoz said. “Everybody kind of was a little tight in the beginning, but everybody’s a lot more relaxed now. A lot more loose.

While the Cougars will enjoy home-field advantage in the first round, Peoria (42-28, 75-63) gets to host the opener, a luxury that takes an extra premium during a short series.

The Cougars won the season series with the Chiefs, 9-7, with Monday marking the club’s lone 2015 home loss to Peoria.

Only three games between the teams were decided by four or more runs.

“Always tight. That’s how baseball is supposed to be played,” Chiefs right fielder Nick Thompson said.

Peoria left-hander Dewin Perez limited the Cougars to two hits in six scoreless innings Monday before the Chiefs’ bullpen scuffled.

Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek held a handful of regulars out of the lineup, namely center fielder Colin Bray and first baseman Marty Herum.

Grudzielanek even shuffled things in the coaching boxes, taking the day off from coaching third base and summoning hitting coach Vince Harrison from across the diamond to serve that role.

South Elgin High Schools nomination for September is Derek Kumerow a senior wide receiver for the football team. In the first game of the season against St. Charles East Derek had 10 receptions for 196 yards and 1 touchdown.

He also had one interception on the defensive side of the ball.

As a returning setter and captain, Hollie was a crucial player and leader to help her team earn 2nd place at the Wheaton North Volleyball Tournament. The team lost to Glenbard West in the Championship.

Hollie earned All-Tournament team with a total of 43 service points.

Kate Lillie was a recent 1st place individual medalist at the opening tournament of the year.

She shot a score of 70 and was 1st out of 84 total athletes. Kate contributed to the team beating their school record by 15 strokes and helping them take 1st place overall as a team.

Kyle is a two year starting quarterback for the Batavia High School football team. Kyle threw for 266 yards and 2 touchdowns against 19th ranked Oswego in a 36-28 Bulldog victory.

Megan recently won her first invitational race at Rock Falls. She ran a fantastic time of 18:58 for 3 miles which is a very fast time for a female athlete.

Rose has been the Lady Saints #1 golfer this season with an average score of 41. Rose and her teammates combined to win the Hersey Girls Golf invite earlier this season.

ST. CHARLES – Saying Marmion’s Andrew Burroughs is comfortable on the cross country course at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve would be an understatement.

A year after setting his personal best on the St. Charles course, Burroughs ran the three miles in 15:24 to finish second in the boys varsity division of Saturday’s St. Charles East Leavey Invitational, while leading Marmion to the event’s team title.

“I came within four seconds of my PR,” Burroughs said. “I am very happy with how I ran.”

Burroughs said the incline awaiting runners the course’s last 1,200 meters is always a challenge. The weather – 72 degrees with 84 percent humidity at race time – also was a challenge, Burroughs said.

Batavia attack is more than just 11

The Bulldogs and coach Dennis Piron entered Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover matchup with South Elgin knowing what it would get from its standout players.

Quarterback Kyle Niemiec is as steady as a performer as there is in the area, while wide receiver Canaan Coffey is determined to find the end zone, which he did Friday night. But there were a significant group of Bulldogs that came in a bit under the radar and showed there’s more than just Niemiec and Coffey to worry about in Batavia.

“We have unselfish players,” Piron said. “A number of guys that can step up and make plays and it could be a different guy each week. Depending on our matchup, we ask the guys to do certain things. So we’re excited because some of the guys haven’t even gotten going yet.”

Junior tight end Glenn Albanese stepped up in a big way against the Storm (five catches for 79 yards) after only pulling down one reception in Week 1. Piron said Albanese was asked to be more of a blocker in the opener at Oswego against a stronger defensive line.

With Coffey being targeted as many times as he is – he had nine catches in Week 1 – Albanese and wide receiver Johnny Fitch made key plays to help Batavia improve to 2-0. Piron said he also expects to see even more improvement from Fitch, and other receivers such as Cole Stokke and Nick Stuttle.

Over the public address system at Batavia on Friday night, the starting offense was announced and there were well more than 11 players announced.

There was a reason for that.

“When I write down my starting offense, I say 17 or 18 guys,” Piron said.

“It’s because they all play. I don’t have just 11. From our wideouts to tight ends, running backs and fullback, there are a number of guys that we think can help this team win and started to show it.”

St. Charles East senior linebacker Jack Russell says the Saints’ 0-2 start hasn’t tempered players’ enthusiasm during practices or in the locker room.

St. Charles North junior quarterback Zach Mettetal channeled such precision down the stretch of Saturday’s second quarter behind two things: a nimble offensive line and the three-step drop.

After wreaking early havoc with its speed rushers to open Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover football game, Bartlett simply couldn’t match up with the adjustment in North’s 35-13 win.

“When we watched film, they were dropping everyone, so our goal was to hit the short stuff today,” Mettetal said.

“Then they came out in man, so the three-step stuff was there today, and everything deep was good.”

Mettetal connected with seven different receivers while finishing 22 for 32 for 341 yards and four touchdowns. Rangy senior Jayson Reckards hauled in scoring passes of 44 and 20 yards in the second quarter, erasing an early deficit, but the

rest of the North Stars’ weapons collaborated consistently to set up those plays.

There was Kyle Novotney running freely up the seam, proving especially dangerous on 3rd and long. Junior running back Eric Lins also converted a handful of screen passes for big gains, excelling behind an offensive line that included Kyle Begovich, Andrew Winkelman, Sam Ambrogio, Isaac Hawn and Nicolas Koenig.

“You get in the game, and it’s repetition, repetition from practice,” Ambrogio said.

“They were gassed, also, with their tempo. That not only made it easier for us to block them, but it opened up so many more plays to use.”

Reckards, who missed last week’s season-opening win against Schaumburg due to a team disciplinary matter, added a 35-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter.

The play reignited North, which was showing fatigue itself from the warm temperatures coupled with the artificial turf surface.

“Jayson, he was lightning in a bottle for us,” North Stars

coach Rob Pomazak said.

Bartlett (0-2) capitalized on a short field and a 23-yard fake punt pass from Ben Johnson to Cameron Mays to set up the game’s first touchdown.

Quarterback Brenner Wallace’s 1-yard keeper was sandwiched between a pair of North Stars three-and-outs to open the game. Kickoff was moved up to the late morning to accommodate the weather and field conditions.

“I wouldn’t say it influenced the game plan at all,” Ambrogio said. “We’ve just got the rest of the day to do what we want. Just [started] earlier in the morning.”

The Hawks initially seemed to have the North Stars in line for a long day offensively, sacking Mettetal twice early while locking in on Lins in the run game. Enter a new offensive plan that altered the North Stars’ swagger as well as the game’s complexion.

“Zach has some great things going as a quarterback,” Pomazak said “He’s patient, he sees the field really well and he has great touch.”

On Saturday, that all added up in North’s favor before long.

White Sox claim Olt off waivers

The White Sox claimed third baseman Mike Olt off waivers Saturday from the Cubs. Olt, who was designated for assignment by the Cubs on August 31, is expected to join the Sox’ major-league roster soon.

Olt, 27, batted .273 with nine homers and 25 RBI over 62 games between the Cubs’ AA and AAA levels in 2015. He made the Cubs Opening Day roster but fractured his right wrist and played in only six games.

Olt played in 89 games for the Cubs last season, batting .160 with eight homers, 12 doubles and 33 RBI. The Sox are thin at third base. Rookie Tyler Saladino (.238, three homers) was called up from AAA Charlotte in July.

Toys are fun to use, but they also are learning tools. What child wouldn’t want a toy tractor that looked exactly like the big one used on the farm?

Cars, trucks, trains, airplanes and other toys can be dated by looking up the history of the adult version. A toy Fordson tractor sold at a Bertoia Auction in 2014 for $185. It is marked with the name of the maker, Arcade.

It’s easy to find the history of this toy. Ford made tractors and trucks with the brand name Fordson from 1917 to 1964. Arcade Manufacturing Company worked from 1902, but the first farm toy it made was the Fordson Tractor in 1922. There were different versions of the tractor, one with W&K tires, and one with steel wheels. But watch out. Many reproductions have been made. *** Q: I found a Florence Ceramics Delores figurine in my mother’s attic.

It’s a woman in a rose-colored dress, with a bonnet, shawl and gloves. It’s 8 inches high. What is it worth, and what’s the best way to try to sell it?

A: Florence Ward began making figurines in her garage in Pasadena, California, before establishing the Florence Ceramics Co. in the 1940s.

She designed all the figurines and other giftware items made by the company. The company was sold to Scripto in 1964 and different products were made. That company went out of business in 1977. The Delores figurine was made in several different colors, including moss green, pink, teal and yellow. Your figurine’s rose-colored dress probably is what is called “pink.”

Delores in a yellow dress is rarer than the others. There has been a big drop in the price of figurines like this, and they are worth only $21 to $50 today.

Rarities sell for $100 to $250. *** Q: I have a set of yellowish Depression glass dishes and wonder how to research them. I have provided a rubbing of a dish to show the design.

What is their value?

A: Your dishes are “Madrid” pattern, and the color is called “amber,” not “yellow.” Madrid was made by the Federal Glass Co. of Columbus, Ohio, from 1932 to 1939. Madrid was made in green, amber and crystal (clear).

Blue (“Madonna” blue) and pink pieces were made for a limited time.

Beware of reproductions. In 1976, Federal reworked the molds and made amber sets called “Recollection.”

There is a small “76” worked into that pattern. Recollection was made in crystal in 1982. Later, blue, crystal and pink pieces were reproduced by Indiana Glass Co., which removed the date from the molds, creating identification problems between old Madrid and newer Recollection. Collectors aren’t as interested in Depression glass as they were in the 1970s, but Madrid is a popular pattern. Current prices for some amber Madrid pieces: dinner plate, $50; luncheon plate, $10; platter, $18; cup and saucer, $15; flat salt and pepper shaker set, $50; and pitcher, $35. *** Q: I have a toy castle that was my uncle’s in the 1920s. It’s made of wood and metal, and it’s raised on a “mountain” that resembles rocks with a trap door. It has four other pieces - a tower, two different buildings and a 6-inch wall - with painted brickwork, doors and windows. The

A: Christian Hausser and his sons, Otto and Max, founded a toy company in Ludwigsburg, Germany, in 1904.

The company is best-known for miniature toy soldiers from many wars, medieval knights, villains, cowboys, Indians, civilian characters, and farm and Noah’s Ark animals. The firm’s Elastolin figures, made from sawdust and glue and then hand-painted, were made until the 1950s. The company also made imaginatively designed military and civilian vehicles and fortresses. Early models, from the late 1920s or early ‘30s, are generic. Pieces are wood covered by lithographed paper. The rocky base is composition, another type of sawdust-and-glue mixture. From the 1950s until production stopped in 1983, they made hardplastic figures, castles and forts. You are missing a few pieces: the entrance arch that connects to the footbridge, a “keep” and another building. A more complete model sold in 2013 for $350, but collectors love toy soldier sets and may pay about $125 to $150 for yours.

*** Q: I have a Schrader valve with a leather case. It was manufactured by A. Schrader’s Son Inc. in Brooklyn, New York. It has three patent dates, March 28, 1916; Feb. 14, 1922; and Apr 10, 1923. It’s marked “Ford Motor Co. for Model A.” How much is it worth?

A: August Schrader received his first patent for a valve in 1893. Today Schrader valves are still used on most pneumatic (inflatable) tires on bicycles, cars and motorcycles. August Schrader emigrated from Germany and opened a machine shop in Manhattan in 1844. He made valves for life preservers, diving equipment, air pillows, and other inflatable rubber items and held several patents. The company moved to Brooklyn before 1900. After his son George joined the business, it became A. Schrader’s Son. Ford made the Model A from 1927 until 1932. You might find interest in your valve at a classic car show or at the Model A Ford Collectors Club (www.mafca.com). ome stories say that when the settlers ran out of food, Pocahontas helped them. The most well known story says that when Captain John Smith, a leader of the Jamestown settlement, visited with Powhatan, he was asked to lay on two rocks. Once he lay down, Powhatan’s men raised clubs as if to kill him. Pocahontas, the legend claims, saved his life by covering him with her own body.

“Pocahontas was the daughter of a chief named Powhatan.

She was about 10 or 11 years of age when the Virginia Company of London started the settlement of Jamestown.

“But,” he adds, “the story about Pocahontas saving Captain Smith from being clubbed by Powhatan’s men is not true. In fact, right after his visit with Powhatan, Smith wrote that he had been treated in a friendly fashion as an honored guest.

“Captain John Smith wrote the story about Pocahontas saving his life in a report he wrote 17 years after the event was supposed to have happened,” says the chief. “In fact, Smith wrote this report seven years after Pocahontas herself died.

So there was no way for her to contradict the story.”

Girls unhappy about mom’s surprise pregnancy Dear Abby: I am 44 and my hus-

band of 20 years is 48. On a recent second honeymoon trip to Sweden, I became pregnant. We already have two beautiful, intelligent daughters, 17 and 14. One started university this fall while the other’s a high school sophomore.

My problem is not so much the high-risk pregnancy, but rather that both of my girls strongly oppose the idea of us keeping the baby. My younger daughter is now giving me the cold shoulder. She doesn’t like change and thinks having a sibling will disrupt our life. My older girl said she is glad she will be at the university so she won’t have to have anything to do with the baby.

I am deeply hurt by their reactions. Please give me some advice.

Studies show vitamin C has little effect on colds

Dear Doctor K: Whatever happened to the idea that vitamin C can boost your immune system and prevent colds?

Dear Reader: Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, was promoted as a health supplement for decades. It is perhaps best known for its one-time reputation for preventing and treating the common cold. This idea was heavily promoted in the 1970s by one of the 20th century’s most celebrated biochemists, Nobel laureate Linus Pauling. But Pauling did not win the Nobel Prize for his theories about vitamin C. Vitamin C is crucial for making collagen, the substance that lends structural support to tendons, ligaments, bones and blood vessels.

Vitamin C is also a potent antioxidant. As the cells in our body do their jobs, they produce a group of harmful chemical waste products called “free radicals.” These free radicals are also created by environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, ultraviolet rays and air pollution. Antioxidants can chemically combine with free radicals, rendering them harmless.

Unfortunately, despite the hype, vitamin C does not appear to prevent colds, and its ability to shorten the duration of colds is

There also is little evidence that vitamin C supplements prevent cancer, heart disease or cataracts.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for men is 90 milligrams (mg) per day. Women should get 75 mg per day. If you are a smoker, add 35 mg per day to your recommended amount.

Taking vitamin C supplements in amounts far higher than the RDA offers no proven health benefits, but it probably won’t hurt.

Most people meet the RDA for vitamin C through their diets.

Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Sweet red pepper is another excellent, but less well known, source of vitamin C. (I’ve put a table listing good food sources of vitamin C on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Just because vitamin C doesn’t appear to boost your immune system doesn’t mean there are no “natural” immune system

boosters. Indeed, if you want to strengthen your immune system and boost your ability to fight off colds, try exercise. Regular moderate aerobic exercise can bolster your protection from common respiratory infections.

Sleep is also important.

People who get enough sleep are less prone to upper respiratory infections. For example, I have a long-standing tendency to get sinus infections. If I go two nights without at least seven hours of good sleep, I often can feel a new infection starting.

People who eat diets high in fruits and vegetables also appear to be less likely to catch colds.

(Though it’s less certain that the diet alone is responsible.) Some studies also found increased susceptibility to colds with increasing levels of stress. So reducing stress may also help.

In short, while regular use of vitamin C is unlikely to protect you against colds, there are other things you can do to protect yourself.

Write Rick a letter and tell him what you told me – that breaking up with him was a huge mistake and that the time you spent with him was wonderful. Let him know that you care for him and want to re-kindle the relationship. But do this in a spirit of generosity and concern for him, not one of fear for yourself.

He may or may not want to get back together with you, but either way he’ll be warmed to know how deeply you care for him.

And there may be no way to solve it, short of giving him an ultimatum: “Back off and start trusting me or we’re history!” His jealousy and possessiveness are out of control and signal deep insecurities. He may need professional counseling, and I hope he will seek it.

Don’t consider marriage unless you love him without reservation (no “I think so”) and he has overcome his emotional flaw with professional guidance. It might be wise to stop being his fiance and give him the freedom to get his life in order before you become a part of it.

Look at the North hand in today’s diagram. It has 6-4 distribution. After opening one heart and hearing partner respond one spade, would you rebid two diamonds or two hearts?

Some columnists recommend that with a minimum 6-4, you bid the six-card suit twice, then (if there is another round) show the fourcard suit. But with extra values, you bid six, four, six.

This is definitely wrong with six spades and four hearts; show those majors.

At least rebidding the six-card suit limits the hand to 12-14 points, when rebidding in a new suit shows some 12-17 points. But it risks missing a much better fit in the second suit.

In this auction, South should have passed out two hearts. His two-no-trump rebid promised a maximum pass. True, North might have continued with three diamonds, backing into the best contract. Two hearts and three diamonds would surely have made.

Two no-trump was another story.

West led his fourth-highest club, East put in the nine, and South won with his king. Now declarer should have started to establish dummy’s heart suit. With East holding the spade ace, the contract could have been made. But South erred by finessing dummy’s diamond jack and running that suit, ending in his hand. Then he led the spade king to East’s ace. The play continued: heart to the ace, club to the queen and ace, two more clubs, heart to East’s king, spade to South’s queen, and a spade to West for down two.
