ast week, I had my first chance this school year to photograph an outdoor sport. A warm afternoon spent shooting the Batavia boys soccer team taking on St. Charles East at home was just what I needed.

I’m excited to see what this season of prep sports brings and the action that is to come.

As a bonus, the sunset was beautiful and provided golden light on the players as they headed into their second half of play.

Investigation into bomb threats continues

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office continued Thursday to investigate the bomb threats that prompted evacuations of three buildings Wednesday morning, spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said.

Meanwhile, he said, court call ran normally in the county’s courthouses Thursday.

Authorities evacuated the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38 in St. Charles Township; the Kane County Branch Court, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles; and the Elgin Branch Court, 150 Dexter Court, Elgin; after receiving two threatening phone calls Wednesday morning.

Bomb units, including explosion-detection dogs, checked the Judicial Center room by room, floor by floor, authorities have said. The

search included judges’ chambers, bathrooms, courtrooms and common areas.

The buildings were reopened after no suspicious items were found.

The evacuations went smoothly, Gengler said, noting people were cooperative.

The sheriff’s office has policies and procedures in place

for emergency events, Gengler said. While it’s never good to have a crisis, events like Wednesday’s give authorities more experience on how to handle such situations, he said.

“There’s nothing better than the actual event to see how things went,” Gengler said.

As with any incident like

this, he said, Wednesday’s response will be evaluated so officials can make changes accordingly.

‘INVALUABLE’ EXPERIENCE St. Charles parents petition school to reinstate annual Springfield trip

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Elevenyear-old Orion Bell can recall his fourth-grade field trip to Springfield like it was yesterday. His class went to both the old and new state Capitol buildings, he said, and they saw sites related to Abraham Lincoln, including his home and tomb.

“We walked in the steps of Abraham Lincoln, and it was really cool,” the Wredling Middle School sixth-grader said. “It was like an incredible experience I never expected to have.”

It’s an experience few fourth-graders in and around the Tri-Cities are having.

The journey is made by three schools in Batavia School District 101 and one school each in Geneva School District 304, Kaneland School District 302 and St. Charles School District 303.

Orion’s former school, Fox Ridge Elementary in St. Charles, is among those that have decided to end the field trip.

When making decisions about field trips, Principal Anne Van Zandt said educators consider each trip’s learning potential.

The adoption of the Common Core standards affected the school’s decision about the annual fourth-grade trip to Springfield, she said.

“It wasn’t a quick decision,” Van Zandt said. “A lot of thought and consideration went into it. We are one of the very last schools to make this decision.”

While the students are still learning about Lincoln, she said, the trip doesn’t align as well with the new curriculum as it did to the former standards.

“We just can’t devote the time,” Van Zandt said. “That field trip takes a lot of time.

Our focus has to be on the Common Core state standards.”

The decision, however, has upset Fox Ridge parents, who are petitioning to rein-

“For me, it’s completely invaluable,” said Kate Bell, who accompanied Orion – her son – on his field trip. “It was one of the best days we had educationally.”

Bell, who also has a third-grader at Fox Ridge, de-

scribed the annual trip as a rite of passage that gives kids valuable hands-on learning.

By seeing the historical sites in person, she said, kids get a better understanding of how people – including Lincoln – once lived.

“We studied him so

much,” Orion said of the former president. “We actually found real proof it was all true.”

Not visiting Springfield would be a wasted opportunity, Bell said, comparing it to students near Philadelphia not visiting Independence Hall or the Liberty Bell.

“Lincoln’s right here. His history is right here,” Bell said. “It’s just a shame to let that experience go when we’re right here.”

Jan Wright, principal of Alice Gustafson School in Batavia, said every fourth-

grade class went to Springfield when she joined District 101 13 years ago.

Now, Wright said, three of the six elementary schools do.

“It’s a nice culmination after they learn all about the government and about the history of Illinois and Abraham Lincoln being part of that,” Wright said.

Sometimes, the Legislature is in session during the school’s visit.

“They can actually see the government in action,” Wright said.

Batavia resident will retire as Ill. Chamber head

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Illinois Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Doug Whitley, a Batavia resident, on Thursday announced he will retire from the organization in June.

Whitley, 63, became president and CEO in September 2001.

Over the years, he has been the guest speaker at many Batavia Chamber of Commerce events.

“He’s certainly brought

new life and new energy to the Illinois Chamber and, more broadly, to the Illinois business community,” Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Roger Breisch said in reacting to the Doug news. “It’s a Whitley sad day in Batavia.”

Whitley, who has lived in Batavia for 20 years, said now was the right time to

announce his retirement.

He noted that when he steps down, he will have been in the job for more than 13 years.

“That’s a good, long run,” he said.

Whitley said he also wanted the Illinois Chamber to have a new leader before the 2014 gubernatorial election.

During his tenure, the Illinois Chamber has represented business interests on matters including pushing for workers’ compensation reform; help defeat a proposed gross receipts tax; founding

and co-chairing the Transportation for Illinois Coalition and seeking legislation to bring long-term solvency to Illinois public pension systems.

“I think we have re-established the Illinois Chamber as a significant voice for business in Illinois,” Whitley said.

He said his biggest disappointment has been that “the elected officials of the state have failed to severely attack the state’s high unemployment numbers.”

The Illinois Chamber Board of Directors will conduct a nationwide search for a successor to Whitley, said Ray Drake, chairman of the Illinois Chairman Board of Directors.

“We thank Doug for the long advance notice, which will allow the board to work with him through a wellplanned transition period that will launch the Chamber’s next chapter of strong advocacy for business in Illinois,” Drake said in a statement.

Balkema will announce bid for seat KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Grundy County Board member Chris Balkema on Tuesday is set to announce that he is running for Congress in the 11th Congressional District, a seat now held

by U.S. Rep. Bill Foster.

Balkema will make an announcement at 9:45 a.m. at Superior Asphalt, a division

of Geneva Construction, 216 Butterfield Road, North Aurora, according to a news release. Balkema is also a manager at Caterpillar.

Balkema faces Republican challengers in the March 18 primary election from conservative talk show host Ian Bayne of Aurora and State Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville.

The 11th District includes

North Aurora, Aurora, Naperville, Lisle and Joliet.

Foster has held the seat since November after defeating former U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert.

From 2008 to 2011, Foster represented Illinois’ 14th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Foster was defeated in November 2010 by then-state Sen. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield.

Crystalline Velvet open for business VFW’s annual essay writing contest begins KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE Cmdr. Matthew M. Mihelcic of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Illinois has announced the kickoff of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition.”

Sixththrough eighth-graders have the opportunity to compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars.

Students begin by competing at the local post level.

Post winners advance to district level.

Eighteen district winners compete in the state competition.

The state winners com-

pete for $46,000 in awards at the national level, and the national champion wins $5,000.

Each year, around 125,000 students participate nationwide.

Students are invited to write a 300- to 400-word essay on a patriotic theme.

The theme for 2013-14 is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” The deadline for student entries is Nov. 1.

Interested students and teachers should contact the nearest VFW post or email vfwil@vfwil.org for information.

Some charges dropped in wreck that killed couple

By JILLIAN DUCHNOWSKI jduchnowski@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Prosecutors dropped the most serious charges Wednesday against a driver in a crash that killed a local couple in 2011.

Patricia Schmidt, 48, of the 28500 block of Brickville Road in Sycamore, had been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, which carries a sentence of between six and 28 years in prison.

She is expected to stand trial Jan. 27 on charges of reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving.

Reckless homicide carries a possible sentence of probation, or between two and five years in prison.

After reviewing the case

file, prosecutors decided they could not prove the more serious charges beyond a reasonable doubt, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said.

Schmidt was charged in connection with the Feb. 21, 2011, crash that killed Timothy T. Patricia Getzelman, 21, Schmidt of Sycamore and Alexis Y. Weber, 21, of Maple Park.

Getzelman and Weber were traveling east on Peace Road in Sycamore when Schmidt, driving south on North Main Street, struck Getzelman’s vehicle on the driver’s side, authorities said.

Witnesses told police Getzelman had the right of way.

Authorities found multiple prescription drugs in Schmidt’s blood, including the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam, phenobarbital, mephobarbital and three others.

The reckless homicide charges allege Schmidt unintentionally killed the couple while driving a vehicle, Schmack said.

Schmack said prosecutors reviewed the decision to drop the aggravated DUI charges with the victims’ families before Wednesday’s court appearance. Both families declined to comment.

Schmidt also waived her right to a jury trial Wednesday, which means Judge Robbin Stuckert will decide whether she is guilty or innocent of each charge.

A jury trial had been set to start Sept. 30.

BATAVIA – Corrine A. Murtaugh (nee Weber), 89, of Batavia, died Sept. 5, 2013. She was born in Aurora on Feb. 15, 1924.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Murtaugh; her parents, Theodore and Rose (nee Michels) Weber; brothers, Nick Weber and Fr. Norbert Weber MSC; and a sister, Kathleen Weber.

She is survived by her children, Diana (Roger) Dean of St. Charles, Ken (Peg) Ramsey Sr. of Batavia and Richard P. Ramsey of Geneva; her dearly beloved grandchildren, Mary Beth Peplow of Florida, Patrick Fidler of Virgil, Jennifer Zitko of Virgil, Andrea Gentry of Aurora, Ken Ramsey Jr. of Rockford, Laura Heffley of Sycamore, Theresa McCrea of Elburn and Brien Ramsey of Oregon; and 14 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brothers, Elmer (Lee) Weber of Montgomery, Theodore (Shirley) Weber of Aurora and Donald (Mary Anne) Weber of Wisconsin; her sisters, Alice Abens of Montgomery and Sister Rose Marie Weber OSSF of Sugar Grove.

Corrine was a devout member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia with a deep devotion to Jesus Christ. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Batavia VFW Post 1197. She was very active in the Women of the Moose 722 in Batavia for many years.

Corrine volunteered her services at the Sacred Heart Monastery in Aurora and at Holy Cross parish for more than 45 years.

The visitation will be at Moss Family Funeral Home in Batavia from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, with a liturgical wake service and rosary at 7 p.m. A solemn funeral Mass celebration will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9.

Interment will immediately follow in River Hills Cemetery. A luncheon will be served in Donovan Hall at Holy Cross Church. • Christopher J. Carr, 26, of the 1200 block of Bangs Street, Aurora, was charged Monday,

Sept. 2, with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property following an incident in the 400 block of Church Street.

• Someone took seven bottles of bleach Friday, Aug. 30, from Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, 100 Flinn St. The suspect returned the bottles, and then was advised not to return to the pantry or risk arrest.

CHARLES – Special Olympics Illinois is gearing up for its 22nd Pumpkin Pedal Bike Tour that will be Oct. 6 at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W370 Dean St., St. Charles. Bicyclists can choose to ride 10-, 20- or 28-mile routes on the Great Western Trail or a 40- or 65mile road ride.

All rides will begin and end at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve.

The road ride route will be marked with arrows, and a map/cue sheet will be available.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and bicyclists may start anytime between 7:45 to 10 a.m.

All routes will be cleared at 3 p.m. Rest stops are provided throughout the route to give riders a chance to enjoy light refreshments. Bicycling enthusiasts can register the day of the ride at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve.

There is a $30 registration fee, with all proceeds to benefit Special Olympics Illinois athletes – cyclists registering by Sept. 27 will receive a Pumpkin Pedal T-shirt.

Traffic shifts on Orchard Road Bridge NORTH AURORA – Southbound traffic over the Orchard Road Bridge will be moved to the newly paved center lanes of the bridge from Tuesday to

Oct. 15, weather permitting, to allow crews access to work on the old southbound lanes of the bridge.

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction of Orchard Road during this portion of the project. During construction, the on and of ramps to/from Interstate 88 will remain open for motorists’ daily use.

Construction will not impede the use of the bridge for daily travel located between Sullivan Road in Aurora and Oak Street in North Aurora.

Watching out for your parents

By COURTLAND MILLOY The Washington Post On a recent evening, I fixed my 87-year-old mom a glass of freshly blended broccoli, spinach and apple juice. I was sure she’d like it, if only for the health benefits. To my surprise, she frowned at the taste and asked for a bowl of ice cream.

What was a concerned son to do?

I’ve spent the past few days with my parents at their home in Shreveport, La., mostly exploring ways to help meet their changing health needs.

Some elder-care experts say that when aging parents stop acting in their own best interest, the grown children must “reverse roles” and simply make them do the right thing.

Good luck with that, fellow baby boomers.

I feel like a double agent during these visits – disguised as a son but operating as an inspector on assignment for my two younger sisters. Make sure to check the attic for wasps, they instructed me. And lay down a few mouse traps. Both sisters thought they had heard tiny rustlings in the night during their last visits.

“Dad,” I said, “your daughters think you might have mice.” I figured that putting it on the girls might stir his protective instincts.

Instead, he replied incredulously, “I just paid a pest control company $1,500.” Turned

out that “just paid” was three years ago. And it was mostly for termite control.

I raised the ante by suggesting that his daughters might be reluctant to visit a house that has rustlings in the night. Sure enough, his resistance began to wane.

“Well, I guess something could have slipped in,” he conceded.

Both of my parents were born in the rural South and grew up during the Depression. Along with their marriage vows was a pledge to never go broke. They have kept both promises now for 63 years.

They earned enough to build a house, pay off the mortgage, send three kids to college and save enough to keep themselves relatively secure in old age.

I couldn’t “reverse roles” with them if my life depended on it.

But according to a report released in January by the Pew Research Center, that’s what many baby boomers do. Among adults with at least one parent who is 65 or older, 30 percent said their parent or parents needed help to handle their affairs or care for themselves. Half of adults 60 or older with a living parent said the parent needs help with day-to-day living.

My parents have made it clear that they have no intention of moving out of their house. So everybody just keeps watch. A day at a time.

BATAVIA – After several property owners recently voiced concerns about a special service area being proposed to fund the Batavia MainStreet organization, city staff will try to address those concerns.

City staff met with representatives from Batavia MainStreet as well as several of the property owners to discuss and work out some of the issues that were raised.

A special service area to fund Batavia MainStreet was established in November 2008, but that special service area expires in November.

The new special service area would cover the same area as the existing one.

“The original SSA created a situation where property owners overpaid into the tax increment financing district due to the tax ‘increment’ being calculated with the SSA levy added,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said in a memo to city officials. “This created an unintended surplus into the TIF by approximately $108,000 over the five-year SSA period.”

Buening said the surplus was caused because of the way the County Tax Extension office levies the tax on properties that are both in a TIF District and an SSA per state assessment requirements.

In addressing the concerns, staff suggested a number of changes, including: • No levy of special service taxes for the first 2½ years to pay down the TIF “overage” created with the SSA/TIF overlap.

• Payment of the “overage” on a yearly basis rather than a lump sum.

• Property owners in the special service area would submit an annual review evaluating the performance of Batavia MainStreet during the past year.

• Properties used for owner occupied residential use would be eligible for a refund of the property taxes paid.

• The special service area would terminate in five years with no renewal.

Aldermen on Tuesday voted to continue the public hearing on the proposed special service area to the Sept. 16 Batavia City Council meeting to work out final details.

STC City Council adopts 2013 comprehensive plan

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council this week formally adopted a plan that will help guide the city for the next two decades.

Tuesday, aldermen adopted the 2013 Comprehensive Plan in a 6-3 vote with one abstention from 1st Ward Alderman Dan Stellato.

It was the culmination of a process that began more than two years ago and included five workshops, two visioning exercises and three open house events.

A public hearing was held last month after review from the Plan Commission and the Planning and Development Committee.

First Ward Alderman Ron Silkaitis was among those who cast a dissenting vote.

He said he was comfortable with the plan except for the portion on the former St. Charles Mall property near the intersection of Route 38 and Randall Road.

That site is one of the few remaining areas in St. Charles for potential commercial development on Randall Road, he said.

“They’re going to allow residential there,” he said. “ I would really prefer to have no residential there. … It was the only sticking point, but I feel it’s an important point.”

Second Ward Alderman Art Lemke and 4th Ward Alderman Jim Martin cast the other dissenting votes, as they did during the Aug. 5 public hearing.

They, too, had concerns about the former mall site.

Transitional living program going strong after 10 years

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – This weekend, Lazarus House is celebrating 10 years of helping the homeless regain their independence through its Center for Transitional Living.

A space crunch is largely what prompted Lazarus House leaders to open the center in 2003, said Carol Crytser, associate director of Lazarus House and manager of the Center for Transitional Living.

Crytser said Lazarus House founder, Darlene Marcusson, who is now retired, helped launch the transitional living center after reflecting on what to do about their lack of space. She said when Marcusson did a little research, she found that someone had the same idea and laid out some plans, but they were never put to use.

“Things just kind of all came together, even as far as the funding,” Crytser said.

The program allows people who are staying at Lazarus House’s emergency shelter live in one of 12 dormitory-style transitional living spaces for up to two years.

Clients contribute 10 percent of their income toward their transitional housing in order to get accustomed to paying for living expenses, Crytser said.

“We work with really getting them into the budgeting habit and we’re pretty strict with how we expect them to budget,” she said, adding that the two-year cushion gives clients time to pay off any debts they might have.

An accountant regularly donates his time to help clients with managing their money, and employment experts help clients with resumes and job-seeking tips, she said.

“It’s just a really great opportunity for people to get into transitional housing and to become more stable so they don’t bounce right back into the homeless shelter,” Cryster said.

She said the program has been successful, as few people end up back at the shelter once they’ve been through the program.

An anniversary celebration is planned for Saturday and includes tours of the of the Center for Transitional Living, the Emergency Shelter, the Women and Children’s Day Center and the Community Resource Center.

Refreshments will be served, and a short program is planned, Crytser said.

“We’re hoping a lot of people will come so [they] will see what we do here,” she said.

Abraham’s impact hard to miss

A

URORA – Noel Abraham’s parents aren’t exactly students of the game of football.

Born in India, his father, Alex, and mother, Bency, are still learning the basics, and Abraham jokes that they tend to ask the same questions over and over.

But even newcomers to the sport could tell that Abraham did something special in Saturday’s season opener. Abraham, a junior cornerback, came up with three interceptions against Plainfield Central, which Cadets coach Dan Thorpe believes to have tied a program record established

by Manny Jaurez.

Abraham didn’t have to explain to mom and dad that he had performed well.

“Yeah, they knew that was good,” Abraham said with a smile.

Abraham almost wasn’t suited up at all for Saturday’s win or tonight’s Week 2 matchup at Ottawa. After dislocating his shoulder three times last season, leading to surgery, Abraham’s parents, and especially his mother, weren’t so sure returning to football was the right call.

Maybe, they thought, he should instead run cross country, like his older brother, Nevin, did when he attended Marmion.

But Abraham convinced his folks that football would be worthwhile, for which Marmion coach Dan Thorpe is appreciative.

“For his parents to allow him to come back shows that they respect the game,” Thorpe said. “I’m sure they were nervous about him playing, so it’s wonderful to have that parental support in knowing that football helps him in his educational development, which we all firmly believe.”

Abraham’s first shoulder injury, just before his sophomore season was to begin, occurred, of all places, in Marmion’s swimming pool.

“We were doing like a football team bonding thing, like relays,” Abraham said.

“I was trying to swim really fast, and it just kind of slid out.”

He re-aggravated his shoulder injury twice more in the weeks to follow, including an especially painful instance during one of only two games he was able to participate in, against Marian Central. That led to season-ending surgery, preventing him from playing basketball as he had

planned.

He certainly didn’t look rusty in his varsity debut. Abraham didn’t even start Saturday’s game, although he rotated in for Seth Sevenich to begin the second half after recording one of his three interceptions in the first half.

At 5-foot-7, 165 pounds, the U.S.-born Abraham acknowledges he’s an unlikely source for a three-pick game. His speed and sound technique, though, served him well, even if he attributed much of his breakthrough day to good fortune.

“I think the third one was my favorite, because I actually had good coverage,” Abraham said. “The first one was really bad coverage, I just got bailed out because the quarterback made a bad decision. The second one, the pass was really bad, it kind of just came right to me, but the third one I actually covered him really well and I jumped up and caught it.”

Abraham said “expectations are a lot higher” for him based on such a remarkable outing in the season opener.

The Cadets’ home crowd on a rainy Saturday morning – the game was originally slated for Friday night, but postponed by lightning – was relatively small, but Abraham figures that might have worked in his favor.

“I think the crowd would have got to me for my first varsity game, especially with not playing since freshman year, really,” Abraham said. “So it was a perfect situation for me.”

In this all-Bulldogs battle, the boys from Oak Lawn have the firepower to potentially hand Batavia what would be its first regular season loss since 2010.

COACHING SPOTLIGHT Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe, who will be leading his old team, the Buffalo Bills, on to the field Sunday in their NFL season opener against the New England Patriots, has the unenviable and bizarre task of preparing his team to play on three days’ rest.

Then again, the Eagles’ 64-0 win Tuesday against DuSable was called in the third quarter, and Chicago Urban Prep seems unlikely to be a team that can capitalize on the circumstances. The Urban Prep game was moved from Friday to Saturday because of the rapid turnaround.

PLAYOFF WATCH St. Francis uncharacteristically missed the playoffs last season but started out the right way with Sunday’s lopsided win over Riverside-Brookfield. A road win tonight at Plainfield South – which bagged an impressive, opening victory against Lemont – would put the Spartans in great shape leading into the rugged Suburban Christian Conference slate.

The buzz in the stands The quarterback play. Both QBs enter tonight’s game feeling great about themselves after leading their teams to impressive opening night wins.

Vikings quarterback Daniel Santacaterina threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s 29-27 win at Oswego, while Wheaton North QB Clayton Thorson, a Northwestern recruit, did nothing to diminish his big-time reputation as the Falcons ripped Cary-Grove, 42-18.

“Honestly, he’s a complete quarterback,” Falcons coach Joe Wardynski said of Thorson. “He can do just about anything you would ask a kid to do at that position.”

The marquee matchup: Geneva’s secondary vs.

Thorson and Co. Wheaton North’s passing game is among the most prolific in the state, putting plenty of heat on a Geneva defensive backfield led by two-way standout Pace Temple, who had two interceptions against Oswego.

Vikings coach Rob Wicinski thinks his defense’s strongsuit is more on the line and at the linebacker level as opposed to the DBs. He hopes the Vikings are able to pressure Thorson “maybe off the edge a little bit,” but he’s less encouraged by the matchups on the interior of the line, where injured, 275-pound Geneva junior defensive lineman T.K. Hood will be out for at least a couple of weeks.

In addition to Thorson, Wardynski trumpets the play of receivers Matt Biegalski and J.P. Forcucci. Biegalski had 11 touch-

down receptions last season.

The X-factors Both teams are looking to better establish their running games, something that Geneva badly needs to do to have a chance in this game.

The Vikings were held to less than 100 yards on the ground against Oswego, hardly the norm for a Wicinski-coached team.

“I can’t remember being this kind of disjointed with the running game,” Wicinski said. “We had 80 yards on 30 carries. I get 30 carries and I’m looking for three times that yardage. That’s a definite red flag. That’s a concern for us.”

While T.J. Miller is Geneva’s top option on the ground, Wheaton North is rotating several backs, but Wardynski is looking for one or two of them to emerge as go-to options going forward.

Best-case scenario for the Falcons Play as well as they did last week against a usually formidable Cary-Grove program.

“They dismantled Cary-Grove,” Wicinski said. “I mean, this is not funny. I mean, it was bad, and I know Cary-Grove is not that bad.”

Wardynski said Wheaton North wants to come out of tonight’s game without lingering questions as it turns its attention to the DuPage Valley Conference schedule beginning in Week 3.

The Falcons also have some revenge on their minds as Wardynski referenced the Vikings’ 33-24 win over the Falcons in 2011 at Burgess Field.

“We went over to Geneva two years ago and got it handed to us pretty good,”

Wardynski said. “They outplayed us in a big way, so we’ve talked about trying to go back over there and trying to redeem ourselves a little bit and hopefully represent our school a little bit better than last time. We know they’ll have a good crowd and they play well at home, so it’s a good opportunity for us.”

Best-case scenario for the Vikings A win against Wheaton North would be sensational, but Wicinski isn’t setting the bar that high.

“We’ve got to come out healthy,” Wicinski said. “That’s probably the most critical thing because if we’re not healthy now, we don’t get the continuity and development you need to make a run at the end of the season. If we come out of this thing healthy and where they keep fighting, they don’t roll over or anything goofy like that, that’d be a real positive.

Maybe a touchdown here or there would be nice.”

The Vikings are certainly capable of that, as receivers Kyle Brown and Temple will aim to exploit some seams in a Falcons defense with only two returning starters.

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Wheaton North 32, Geneva 20 Wicinski said dealing with an opponent like Wheaton North is “just too early for us,” but the reality is the Falcons are a program teams generally don’t want to face at any point of a season, as St. Charles East fans can attest from last year’s 7A playoffs (41-13, Falcons).

Geneva’s Oswego win was eye-opening, but there are precious few teams in the state capable of beating Wheaton North.

The skinny: Special teams, more than any other phase of the game, likely made the difference in Batavia’s opening win. Not only did the Bulldogs take advantage of punting miscues by Glenbard North, but Batavia punter Tucker Knox boomed his opportu-

nities. “Tucker’s punts were basically fair catches so what was amazing about those is they went in the air for 45 yards,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “That wasn’t a roller or anything.” Another tight game that comes down to special teams could be on tap tonight. Piron called Richards a highly athletic, spread-offense team that is explosive on both sides of the ball. “When they get a pick, it’s to the house. They take it to the house,” Piron said. “It’s like their whole

team gets energized.”

Extra point: Piron noted that, despite being credited with a team-high 16 tackles against Glenbard North, Bulldogs middle linebacker Anthony Thielk was a harsh self-critic. “It’s just kind of funny how disappointed he was in himself, and he had 16 tackles,” Piron said. “I just thought that was pretty ironic.”

The skinny: Jacobs quarterback Bret Mooney is drawing Division I attention, and is East coach Mike Fields’ greatest concern tonight.

“They have a heck of a QB there,” Fields said. “He does a great job and he’s their leader. He really epitomizes what they’re going to do. Often, as he goes, they go, and from what I’ve seen of him, he goes pretty well most of the time.” Defensively, Fields said that end Luke Spicer, linebacker Michael Candre, cornerback Geno Rogers and safety Brannon Barry were among the most effective in setting the tone during the Saints’ win against South Elgin. Fields said Jacobs is a bigger team than South Elgin, so the Saints will need to muscle up along both lines. The Saints will look to play a sharper fourth quarter after squandering most of a 35-7 lead against South Elgin.

Extra point: Fields said a handful of missed assignments last week and other moments of confusion won’t be tolerated going forward.

“We had a lot of things that just can’t be done if we want to continue to be successful,” Fields said.

Plainfield Central (0-1) at St. Charles North (0-1), 7 p.m. today Last week’s results: St. Charles North lost to Elk Grove, 23-22 in overtime; Plainfield Central lost to Marmion, 25-7.

The skinny: Despite a flurry of turnovers in the passing game Saturday, St. Charles North was squarely in the mix in its season opener, frantically rallying to force overtime before falling in the extra session. The obvious starting point for the North Stars is to take better care of the football, a bugaboo that was equally problematic for the Wildcats in their Week 1 loss at Marmion. Receiver Nate Newbill and tight end Garrett Johnson flashed some big-play potential last week for the North Stars, who also envision being a more effective running team than they displayed against Elk Grove, rushing for only 116 yards in the game.

Extra point: North’s kicking game surely was a point of emphasis in practice after a botched point-after try loomed large in

overtime.

IC Catholic (1-0) at Kaneland (1-0), 7:30 p.m. today Last week’s results: IC Catholic beat Chicago Noble Street Charter, 47-6; Kaneland beat Brooks, 27-7.

The skinny: Kaneland managed to win comfortably in its opener despite committing five turnovers, which illustrates how strong the Knights performed defensively. Kaneland limited Brooks to 58 rushing yards as the Knights’ younger additions to the defense, such as linemen Jake Gomes and Andrew Kray, melded comfortably with the unit’s elder statesmen. Another inspired performance could be even more valuable tonight against an IC Catholic offense that will be plenty confident after a robust, Week 1 output. On offense, Kaneland quarterback Drew David wasn’t as sharp as usual but still spread the ball around to seven targets, including Tyler Slamans, who led the Knights with 71 receiving yards on three receptions.

Extra point: The Knights play at home for the second straight week, and are in Maple Park for four of their first five games this season.

Marmion (1-0) at Ottawa (0-1), 7:30 p.m. today Last week’s results: Marmion beat Plainfield Central, 25-7; Ottawa lost to Yorkville, 17-16, in overtime.

The skinny: Marmion played well in its season opener but Cadets coach Dan Thorpe expects a difficult road game tonight against a wounded opponent. “They don’t want to start out 0-2, they’re at home – we know we’re going to get their whole playbook,” Thorpe said. “I really like how they play.

They’ve got a bunch of guys 190 to 210 [pounds], and they hit. They fly around.” Marmion’s defense gobbled six interceptions last week but the Cadets’ relatively small secondary will be challenged against what Thorpe described as a towering receiving corps for the Pirates. Senior cornerback Tyler Eberth, 6-foot-2, is the only of Marmion’s regular DBs who stands taller than 6-foot.

Extra point: Standout running back Jordan Glasgow will miss his second straight game with a high ankle sprain, said Thorpe, who is pleased with the team’s depth at running back in his absence. “But we definitely miss him,” Thorpe said. “He’s a difference-maker.”

St. Francis (1-0) at Plainfield South (1-0), 7 p.m. today Last week’s results: St. Francis beat Riverside-Brookfield, 35-9; Plainfield South beat Lemont, 28-13.

The skinny: St. Francis boasts an elite running back in James Butler, but Plainfield South has its own high-caliber threat in the backfield. Cougars running back Josh Harris scored four touchdowns in the Lemont win and also proved to be a receiving threat out of the backfield. The Spartans also must contend with an opportunistic Plainfield South defense that forced five turnovers against Lemont.

Extra point: Spartans sophomore cornerback Justin Berry, of St. Charles, had an interception in his varsity debut last week.

Chicago Urban Prep (1-0) at Aurora Christian (1-0), 1 p.m. Saturday Last week’s results: Urban Prep beat Maine West, 30-24; Aurora Christian beat DuSable, 64-0.

The skinny: The game was moved from Friday night to Saturday on Wednesday to give the Eagles more time to recuperate from a rare Tuesday game against DuSable. But the Eagles didn’t exert themselves too much in that one, as the game was called in the third quarter with the game well out of hand.

Extra point: The Eagles always

have quick-strike capability, but scoring four touchdowns in less than a minute Tuesday was extreme even for them.

Aurora Central Catholic (1-0) at Chicago Bogan (0-1), 12:30 p.m. Saturday (at Lane Stadium) Last week’s results: ACC was awarded a forfeit win against Oostburg (Wis.); Bogan lost, 40-12, to Chicago Dunbar.

The skinny: ACC is eager to hit somebody after the Chargers were unable to reschedule last week’s postponed opener with Oostburg, but ACC coach Brian Casey worries about the team’s inability to make the usual Week 1 to Week 2 strides without a game film to dissect.

“There are still an awful lot of silly, first-game mistakes we have not made yet,” Casey said. “Any game you watched [last weekend], there were your share of illegal shift penalties and false starts and lining up in the neutral zone and illegal formations, stuff like that. Those are things you get ironed out.”

Extra point: Six of the remaining eight teams on ACC’s schedule won their season openers, including next week’s opponent, IC Catholic.

Burlington Central (0-1) at Stillman Valley (1-0), 7 p.m. today Last week’s results: Burlington

Central lost to Hampshire, 41-7; Stillman Valley beat Tinley Park, 49-21.

The skinny: Central coach Rich Crabel was dismayed by his team’s play at the line of scrimmage in a surprisingly lopsided opening loss to Hampshire. The Rockets will need to turn that around in a major way against a traditionally smashmouth Stillman Valley program.

Extra point: To the extent that enrollment matters, Central should be in good shape. Central has almost double the IHSA classification enrollment listed for Stillman Valley (590).

Noble Street Charter (0-1) at Wheaton Academy (0-1), 7 p.m. today Last week’s results: Noble Street Charter lost to Chicago Urban Prep West, 36-6; Wheaton Academy lost to Westminster Christian (Mo.), 44-0.

The skinny: After a long trip to the St. Louis area and discouraging result opened Wheaton Academy’s season, the Warriors look forward to their home opener against a much more beatable foe.

Extra point: The Warriors would be well-served to win this one; Suburban Christian Conference juggernauts Montini and Aurora Christian loom the next two weeks.

Wiltsie suffered a knee injury in practice this week.

“We thought it might have been an ACL,” Rockets coach Marv Leavitt said. “We got confirmed that it wasn’t. …. It doesn’t seem season-ending, which is wonderful for us. We’re going to take it a little easy right now with her, but we hope to have her back soon.”

NOTEWORTHY North finds early stride Exceeding expectations this early in the season isn’t a bad thing, but St. Charles North still remains careful not to put too much weight on last weekend’s Plainfield North tournament title.

It’s only September – well, August when the tournament concluded – but North finds itself in a good place just the same.

“We really like starting out with that tournament because it’s so competitive and because it’s so early in the season, you get to see what kinks you’ve got to work out still,” North Stars coach Lindsey Hawkins said. “To be totally honest, I wasn’t expecting to do as well as we did. I thought we still had some things to work on, and I know we still have some things to work on, but I was really proud of them because they did do so well.”

Taylor Krage (44 kills, 14 blocks) and sister Daley (23 kills, 10 blocks) sparked a solid effort at the net, benefiting from the precise play of setter Sydney Wohlert, who earned all-tournament team honors.

Sophia DuVall and Emily Carroll added to what Hawkins called “a wall at the net,” never wavering in their intensity.

Hawkins noticed a great sense of purpose during summer workouts, as North returned a talented core that includes the Northern Illinois-bound Taylor Krage.

“Even when everybody’s gone, it’s just a weird feeling,” he said. “It gets weirder every year. Just bittersweet. It’s tough.”

Vikings win, but coach not pleased Geneva’s Nicole Hassels takes medalist honors

JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ELBURN – Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls golf meet between Batavia and Geneva at Hughes Creek Golf Club turned out to be one of those rare sporting events in which the losing side left feeling perhaps a little better than the winners.

The Vikings came out on top, 179-192, but Geneva coach Eric Hatczel was not entirely pleased with the play of his squad.

“I think we struggled today,” he said. “It was the first time we ever had to worry about a score over 50 from any one of the girls.

We don’t have anybody that goes super low … but they’re all collectively capable of shooting in the low 40s or mid 40s on a regular basis.

Seeing a couple come in that were over 50 was a little alarming.”

On the plus side, Hatczel noted that any of the Vikings

have the capacity to step up and post a low score to help the team, and Thursday that was junior Nicole Hassels, who fired a 6-over-par 42 for Geneva (4-1).

“It was much better than I’ve been doing recently,” Hassels said. “My drives were a lot farther than they have been lately and I had a lot of one-putts, so that made me confident.”

Hassels was two strokes better than Batavia’s Lauren Anderson, whose 44 was the second-lowest score on the day. “[Wednesday], we played West Chicago and Waubonsie Valley and I was coming off a fever-flu thing, so I didn’t do too well,” Anderson said. “I really wanted to come out and make up for it, so today I feel really good about it.”

Anderson would have finished with an even lower score if her 40-foot birdie putt attempt on the par-4 No. 1 hole had not lipped out.

Batavia coach Morgan

Connell also was feeling more upbeat than she was a day earlier.

“We did not have a good night [Wednesday] night,” she said. “We lost by like 40 [strokes]. Tonight, I’m really, really proud of them for Geneva to sneak one by us with 13 strokes, that’s good – much more respectable.

We’ve got three scores in the 40s.”

Rebecca Haseman shot a 48 for the Bulldogs (1-5) and Candace Eamon added a 49.

Kari Kirl and Elise Anderson each carded a 45 for Geneva and Allie Henrie finished at 47.

The Vikings’ lone loss of the season so far came to Neuqua Valley.

“We were at home and we had an average day and they had a good day,” Hatczel said. “Waubonsie and [St. Charles] North are coming up next, which will be two good challenges for the girls, but two good opportunities at home for the girls to see what they can do.”

Cougars manager Mark Johnson reluctantly cleared his office after Monday’s season finale.

“Even though I’ve got family at home, and kids, it’s still not easy to pack up and leave,” he said.

Johnson hopes to return to his Fifth Third Bank Ballpark digs in 2014, but he won’t know his destination until the parent Cubs announce their minor league assignments this winter.

In the meantime, his offseason agenda includes neither stewing nor sulking.

The Cougars may have lost a single-season franchise record 80 games in 2013, but the better times and moments aren’t lost on “MJ,” who finds he doesn’t have to pry to remember.

“They got better in a lot of areas,” Johnson said. “The team changed quite a bit over the past month and a half personnel-wise.

The guys that have stayed Mark Johnson throughout the year, they’ve made some changes emotionally and physically.

They’ve done some things Jeimer and they’ve Candelario matured a little bit. They have some serious growing pains the first two months of the season and they got better. I think as a team we changed some and we didn’t play as well as we did in the first half, but there’s some good things that happened in there.”

Pottawatomie Garden Club to host plant sale KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The Pottawatomie Garden Club will host a plant sale and garden boutique event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept.

14 at the Kane County Branch Court, 530 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

The plant sale will feature mums, kale, grasses, next year’s perennials and dried flower arrangements.

Proceeds from the sale will support an annual horticultural scholarship the club awards to a District 303 high school graduate and monetary gifts to the Garfield Farm Museum, We Grow Dreams, St. Charles Public Library and the Illinois Extension Master Gardener Program.

The club also plants flowers in the spring and

fall at the St. Charles Municipal Center, the Veteran’s Memorial Garden, the St. Charles Public Library and the Tri City Health Partnership.

In addition, the club has recently teamed up with the Geneva Garden Cub to install and maintain plantings at the Living Well Cancer Center and the new CASA Grow a Healthy Child Garden, both in Geneva.

CHARLES – Charlie’s Center for the Arts and the St. Charles Public Library will present the GrassRoots Literary Showcase, a one-night-only event featuring readings from Chicago-area poets.

The free event is open to the public and will take place at 6 p.m. Sept.

This event will be hosted by St. Charles poet Russ Devereaux.

History center to present ‘Train Wrecks in the 1970s’ KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva History Center will present “Geneva Train Wrecks in the 1970s” with guest presenter Mark Llanuza as part of the September Brown Bag Lunch Series.

The event will take place at noon Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Bencini Room of the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva.

Llanuza will share personal photographs of train derailments and wrecks in Geneva and the surrounding areas from the ’70s to the ’90s. As a Metra employee for more than 17 years, Llanuza grew-up in the area

and became fascinated with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He began taking photographs in 1972 at the age of 15, which has led to a large collection of local railroad images.

Those who attend should bring a lunch. Cookies, water and coffee will be available.

Nissan loads luxury into mainstream Maxima Nissan has a good thing going with the Maxima and in the past few years has opted not to change it much, if at all.

The powerplant, a V6 engine mated to a continuously variable transmission, remains the same as it was in 2010.

Changes are minor. No longer do rear seats fold for entry into the trunk. Instead they have been heavily bolstered in the interest of bodily comfort.

The trunk still has 14.2 cubic feet of storage space.

Maxima verges on the fullsize and luxury end of the sedan market. Another sedan in this category, by the way, is the Toyota Avalon.

Buyers might think twice about moving up to the official luxury divisions (Infiniti and Lexus) of these two automakers and their pricier products.

The recently tested 2013 Maxima lends weight to thinking twice.

Legroom is ample front and rear. Power features (including sunroof), alloy wheels, leather trim are in abundant evidence.

The SV was the tested upscale model but it differs little in equipment with the base S sedan.

Both have the 3.5-liter, dual overhead cam, 290-horsepower V6 engine mated to a continuously variable transmission with mileage ratings by the Environmental Protection Agency at 22 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. During the test week in mostly highway driving, the tested SV averaged 25.5 mpg.

Regular fuel is OK. The power sliding sunroof is not the only feature shared by the S and SV. They also share power front seats, power windows which are express up and down in front, power door locks and exterior mirrors. Other major shared features are dual zone climate control, Bluetooth, lighted cruise controls mounted on the

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper leather-clad manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel, inside mirrors that self-dim, variable intermittent wipers, two 12-volt outlets, visors with lighted vanity mirrors, rear reading and front map lights and 16-inch alloy wheels holding P245 all-terrain tires.

The S is priced from $31,000 and the SV $35,080. Major differences are leather trim in the SV and cloth seats on the S, plus fog lights and heated exterior mirrors with LED turn signal indicators for the SV. There are more choices with the SV. Xenon headlamps and a rear spoiler are options.

An upgrade SV with a Premium Package adds dual panel moonroof, rear view monitor, cherry wood drim and a rear power sunshade. The package will adds several thousand dollars to the standard SV price.

The use of a CVT with a powerful V6 engine is a daring venture by Nissan.

CVTs, a relatively new mechanism for the automotive industry, work best with smaller engines where there is less RPM stress. Nissan has enlisted the continuously variable as the only transmission for its front-wheel-drive, five-passenger, four-door Maxima.

That indicates a company with confidence in its 290-horsepower product.

There is a manual override to the CVT but, basically, this conical transmission elim-

inates gates and, thus, shift points by a driver. The result is improved fuel economy as the flexible CVT allows the engine’s revolutions per minute to operate at their most efficient, rather than at the whim of a driver.

During the test week, all was serene in the cabin of the Maxima SV. The sedan raced along interstates, reacted well on narrow city streets and handled several rough country roads with ease. The independent suspension relies on struts (coil springs over gas shocks) in front, multilinks in the rear and stabilizer bars front and rear. It does not have the nano-second response of an electronically monitored suspension system, but the struts and links get the job done. On rough roads, the sedan had to

be driven carefully, but not to the point of distraction.

While driving in the city and the interstate, the ride was comfortable and, what is more important, quiet. Outside as well as internal engine noises did not intrude. Insulation materials have done the job.

Controlled by twin calipers, disc brakes measure 12.6 inches in front and 12.2 inches in the rear. These brakes bring the 3,551-pound sedan from a speed of 60 mph to 0 in 128 feet.

The nine-speaker Bose sound system serves AM-FM and XM satellite radio, compact disc (changer for six) and MP3 players, auxiliary audio input jack and hands-free telephone hookup. Redundant audio controls are mounted on the steering wheel.

Maxima’s drive-by-wire system turns this 190.6-inch long, 73.2-inch wide sedan almost on a dime. It has a 37.4 foot turning circle.

The complement of standard features also includes automatic headlights, solar glass, rear window defogger, air conditioning, multiple storage facilities, grab handles and lockable glove box.

Safety features include fourwheel antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, brake assist, electronic brake distribution, air bags in front, on the sides (in front) and overhead (front and rear), headrests to complement five seatbelts, anchors and tethers for three children’s seats, lockable doors and windows in the rear (children like to hang an arm out the window), and tire pressure monitoring system.

Assembled in Smyrna, TN, the Maxima’s warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance, five years or 60,000 miles on the engine and 10 years or 120,000 miles on the CVT. For information, visit www. nissanusa.com/maxima.

TNT kicks things off with “Cold Justice” (9/3), a reality show from “Law & Order’s” Dick Wolf. Two women, one a former prosecutor, the other a former crime-scene investigator, work together to find new evidence in unsolved murder cases.

If you’re feeling like trivia games just aren’t long enough, NBC has the solution on Sept. 9 with “The Million Second Quiz.” 1) Put contestants in a life-size hourglass in Manhattan where they must live and compete all day, every day for 12 days. 2) Add Ryan Seacrest as host.

Fox makes its fall TV entrance with a drama and two comedies. Ichabod Crane chases the horseman with no head in a modern take on “Sleepy Hollow,” (9/16).

And “SNL” alum Andy Samberg plays a detective to Andre Braugher’s captain in the comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (9/17), while Seth MacFarlane writes his particular brand of jokes for “Dads” (9/17).

On Sept. 23, Anna Faris brings her comedic skill to TV as a single mom living with her mother in “Mom” (CBS). Another mom feeling an entirely different kind of pressure is Toni Collette in “Hostages” (CBS, 9/23).

Collette is a surgeon hired to operate on the president, who she must kill in order to save her kidnapped family.

Academy-Award winner Robin Williams returns to series television in “The Crazy Ones,” CBS’s new single camera workplace comedy about a larger-than-life advertising genius whose unorthodox methods and unpredictable behavior would get him fired ... if he weren’t the boss.

Spader, rocking a bald head, plays a master-fugitive who offers to help the FBI track down other master-criminals in “The Blacklist” (NBC).

ABC wants your attention on the 24th with four new shows. If you like your agents top secret and easy on the eyes, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” could be for you. But if revisiting the 1980s sounds like more fun, check out “The Goldbergs,” a family who haven’t met matching sweaters they didn’t like.

Bradley Whitford leaves “The West Wing” far, far behind for the comedy “Trophy Wife,” where he plays a twice-divorced father of three kids who finds his third wife at a karaoke bar.

Think winning the lottery fixes everything? It’s more money, more problems

for seven employees of a Queens gas station on “Lucky 7.”

On the 25th, ABC sneaks in one more with “Back in the Game,” about a father (James Caan) and daughter who find common ground when they agree to coach a Little League team together.

Here’s hoping Will Arnett finds the comedy magic in “The Millers,” his third network show in four years.

He plays Nathan Miller, a recently divorced reporter whose father decides to follow his lead and leave his mother. And what the heck, Nathan has a spare room.

See what’s cooking on “Masterchef Junior” (Fox, 9/27).

If you like your “Revenge” served with a side of “Betrayal,” ABC delivers on the 29th. (Literally, the show follows “Revenge.”) In this tangled tale, an unhappily married photographer is married to a prosecutor and has an affair with a defense lawyer. Surprise!

They’re on the same case.

Cue the hot mess.

Over on Showtime things get intimate in “Masters of Sex,” (9/29) based on the work of William Masters and Virginia Johnson. It features Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as the real life couple who researched human sexuality in the 1950s.

From pioneering research into sex to a guy with no chance of having any, HBO gives us “Hello Ladies” (9/29) starring Stephen Merchant as Stuart, a British Web designer whose attempts at wooing the ladies in Los Angeles give new meaning to awkward.

September comes to a close with the comedy “We Are Men” (CBS, 9/30) about a group of you guessed it, men, living in a short-term apartment complex. Two are divorced, one is jilted at the altar and one is trying to reconcile with his wife after he had an affair. It stars Tony Shalhoub (“Monk”) and Kal Penn.

Sister’s fantasy of father is a far cry from reality Teen seeks advice on how Dear Abby: I have a half-sister with whom I share a mother. Her father and my mother were married for almost 10 years.

This man, I believe, had some mental issues.

He would quiz me about my sexual relations with my boyfriend at the time, wanting details. He would often fly off the handle and argue with my mother for no reason.

There are too many other examples to list. Quite frankly, he was a horrible husband and father.

This man died two years ago. My half-sister has since immortalized her father into someone he was not. She even tattooed his initials on her wrist.

Regular eye exams can halt vision loss in diabetics Dear Doctor K: Could you explain how diabetes affects vision?

Dear Reader: The high blood sugar levels that occur in people with diabetes can have serious consequences throughout the body, including the eyes. Many of my patients with diabetes are most concerned that diabetes will rob them of the precious gift of sight.

People with diabetes are at greater risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma, and keeping blood sugar under control can reduce your risk of developing them in the first place. But if you develop either of these two conditions, fortunately there are effective treatments. These days, no person with diabetes should go blind from cataracts or glaucoma.

However, a third eye problem – diabetic retinopathy – is more likely to cause severe vision loss or blindness. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when abnormal blood sugar levels damage small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensing area in the back of your eyes. The retina sends visual images to the brain.

Diabetic retinopathy begins

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff when the walls of small blood vessels in the retina weaken. They leak fluid into the surrounding tissue, often leaving protein and fat deposits in the retina. The vessel walls also develop tiny bulges or balloons called “microaneurysms” that leak red blood cells into the retina.

As the condition progresses, the abnormal vessels begin to close, robbing the retina of its blood supply. Nerve fibers in the retina that are necessary for vision begin to die from poor circulation and lack of oxygen. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

These changes may not alter your vision. But if fluid leaks into the center of the macula – the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision – your sight will be impaired. Swelling of the macula is called macular edema.

As retinopathy advances, the damaged retina tries to repair itself by sprouting new blood ves-

sels. However, these new vessels are very fragile and don’t grow normally; they tend to leak blood and break apart. This can cause a sudden loss of vision.

Treatments can help to prevent vision loss, or slow its progression. But there is no cure for diabetic retinopathy. You’ve got to catch it early and stop it from getting worse.

You can significantly reduce your risk of eye diseases by keeping your blood sugar at near-normal levels. Controlling your sugar levels also will protect against damage to other parts of your body, including your kidneys, heart and brain.

Regular vision testing is also vital. Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. These exams can detect macular edema and diabetic retinopathy in the earliest stages. Prompt treatment can help prevent severe vision loss and blindness.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have what is called a very bad temper. If things don’t go my way, I “blow my top.” Then I pout and stop talking.

I’ve hurt my family with this type of behavior. I’ve also lost some of my best friends, including a boyfriend, because of my childish behavior.

I want to stop this immature behavior before I wind up with no friends at all. Please, don’t tell me to get professional counseling. I want to solve my problem by myself. I’d appreciate any help you can give me. I’m really serious about eliminating my bad temper now and forever. – Nameless, Galesburg Dear Nameless: The first (and hardest) step in conquering a condition is to admit you have a problem. Congratulations! You have reached step one. In my file on bad tempers, I found information from Dr. Benjamin Schwartz, a New York psychologist and acknowledged expert on the subject.

Dr. Schwartz offers the following suggestions on how to keep cool during times of stress and upset: • Listen to criticism.

Hear out the complaint without interrupting.

One, you’ll have a better chance to tell your side of the story if you’ve been a good listener. Two, most criticism has some truth in it. And three, giving criticism that is received open-heartedly is therapeutic for the critic.

• Show that you’ve heard. Say something like, “I’m sorry,” or, “I didn’t mean to,” if only to preface further explanation for your behavior. Few things are more infuriating than a casual shrug,

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace a stony silence or a sullen stare in response to an honest request for an explanation. Using such tactics, you’ve lost the battle before you’ve even told your side of the story.

• Learn from your mistakes. You’ll be making mistakes all your life. If you’re smart, you’ll be continually making new ones instead of repeating the same old ones.

• Watch how others handle criticism.

Carefully study the reactions of other people when they’re confronted with their errors.

You’ll be amazed at how few people are inclined to listen to their critics. You’ll hear a lot of snappy retorts, cool silences and interminable rationalizations.

All this should indicate how difficult it is to handle mistakes well – and how much better you’ll be if you learn how to do it.

• When in doubt, take the blame. There are times when it’s important, as a matter of principle, to stand your ground on an issue. But in general, if you accept your critic’s comments, you’re able to proceed to the next issue in your life. Not only will you improve your relationships, but you’ll also boost your own character a notch or two.

If South plans carefully, he has a good chance to make his contract. But if he plows forward thoughtlessly, he will probably fail. South is in four spades.

West leads the club king, and East signals with his jack.

What should declarer do?

I think North should have made a takeout double over one club. True, the double might have resulted in his side’s playing in a 4-3 major-suit fit, but it would have been more flexible than one diamond. Then, South’s one-spade advance was forcing for one round.

South has four potential losers: two hearts, one diamond and one club. But if diamonds are splitting 3-2, he has 10 winners: five spades, four diamonds and one club. How might he lose four tricks first?

Only if East gains the lead to push a heart through. So, at trick one, South must play low, letting West hold the trick. If declarer takes the first trick, when West gets in with his diamond king, he will continue with a low club, giving East the lead for the heart shift. Note that West knows to do this from East’s careful play of the club jack at trick one. Play the top of touching honors when you cannot win a trick on defense.

South takes West’s club continuation, draws trumps ending in his hand, and plays a low diamond to dummy’s jack.

Then, because dummy has no side entry, declarer continues with a low diamond to his queen. After that, he cruises home.
