Who is the hardest worker you know?

Labor Day. The holiday is here again, and many Americans will have the day off to relax, clean house or get out of town. And, of course, some people actually will have to work on Labor Day. (I know I’ll be working, but – hey – at least I’ll be off another day the next week.)

A holiday dedicated to the social and economic achievements of U.S. workers, Labor Day often causes me to reflect on work, in general.

And that always gets me thinking about my dad.

My dad is one of the hardest workers I know.

On sweltering hot summer days like the ones we’ve been experiencing this week, my dad can pretty likely be found baking in the sun painting storage units. Unit after unit after unit.

I remember when I was

a kid, my dad would often come home covered in paint after spraying huge warehouses. I remember, as I got older, the nights when he would be in pain, his hands cramped up from holding his painting tools all day.

My dad has inspired me in many ways, even though our lines of work are very different. He has taught me how to work hard, pay attention to detail and get a job done well.

So, readers, who is the hardest worker you know?

A dedicated volunteer and his ‘tenants’ at Hickory Knolls If you’ve ever visited Hickory Knolls during May, June or July, you’ve probably noticed a certain bubbliness in the air, a constant, cheerful chatter that surrounds the nature center and garden plots.

Longtime residents will recognize the sound as a distinguishing feature of this area, one that dates back to the days when James O. Breen Park was known as Campton Hills Park and the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center was a distant dream.

Birders will recognize the sound as the calls of the purple martin, Progne subis.

Park district employees, meanwhile, recognize none of those happy sounds would be heard here if it weren’t for the efforts of our dedicated volunteer Mike Swanson.

Mike established the martin colony years ago, and devotes countless hours each year to the care and maintenance of the birds’ housing – white compartmental housing sometimes referred to as “apartments” (and yes, purple martin caretakers are often called landlords), as well as white, weatherproof plastic gourds.

Besides the happy-sounding calls from Mike’s “tenants,” we employees also are lucky enough to receive periodic updates on the martin colony, plus the bluebird and tree swallow houses Mike also maintains and monitors.

Some of these reports contain detailed facts and figures on nests, eggs, nestlings, successful fledges, etc., while others are narratives of Mike’s observations.

The one that arrived the other day was so descriptive, and delightful, I thought you’d enjoy reading it, too: “In mid-August, when I arrived at the park to monitor the nest boxes for what I expected to be the last time this year, I was surprised to still find some martins on and near two of the martin houses. The martins are usually gone by the end of July or early August. I found

“As I lowered the house near Campton Hills Road, a chick left one of the Super Gourds attached to the house.

Since martins are the only birds in the park that return to roost in their nests after fledging, I don’t know if the bird had just fledged or it left because it was disturbed while it was roosting. Its behavior made me suspect it had just fledged.

“The chick flew upward over the soccer field. Then it headed toward the tree line adjacent to Campton Hills Road; and landed near the top of the tallest tree there.

“I finished lowering the house. One more large chick was found in the gourd. No other birds were found in the house or the other gourd, so I gently returned the house to its raised position without the remaining chick leaving its nest.

“The fledgling began what I considered to be a distress call. Within a few seconds the chick’s father flew toward the tree and circled over the field as it called to the chick.

The chick kept calling but didn’t join its father, so the father joined the chick in the

tree. They chatted for about a minute.

“Then the father left the tree and circled above the field until the chick joined him. Then the father escorted the chick to a tall, dead tree near the entrance to the park.

After the father perched on one of the bare branches, the chick joined him on another one. They chatted for about a minute.

“Then the father flew alone toward the gourd, where his mate was perched on the gourd’s porch. She had returned while the father was

tending to the fledgling. She called to the chick inside the gourd. Then she went inside cautiously to check it before returning the porch.

“She and her mate chatted for a few seconds. Then he returned to the fledgling in the tree, and two other martins joined them. I think they were probably also his chicks that had fledged earlier. They all continued to chat for a minute or two before he returned to his mate.

“The fledglings remained in the tree where one of them exercised its wings while it

was perched, and another took a short flight before returning to the tree. The dead tree provided the fledglings with bare branches to perch without leaves obstructing them.

“The fledglings also demonstrated the tree provided a good site to exercise their wings and take short flights to improve their flying and perching skills. The bare branches provided a clear view of their parents, as well as potential threats approaching the fledglings. In addition, while their parents were hunting for all of their chicks and caring for the remaining one in the gourd, the chicks in the tree could be easily monitored by their parents.”

Mike ended his story with the thought, “This experience reminded me that even dead trees can have an important role in the lives of the birds.”

I’m a big fan of dead trees, too, but I think in this case the credit for the success of these birds should go to Mike.

St. Charles family still grieving 26 years after daughter died in crash involving drunken driver

erri and Richard Schlachta remember their only daughter, Noelle, as a beautiful, vibrant young woman whose friendly, bubbly personality drew people to her.

Among the photos the St. Charles family cherish is one from her prom in 1985, where Noelle Schlachta is sitting in a chair, ensconced in white chiffon ruffles and holding a pink and white bouquet, her face beaming with a happy smile.

“Everybody who knew her, loved her,” Gerri Schlachta said.

Noelle Schlachta was killed by a drunken driver at 5:10 a.m.

April 30, 1989, on the Northwest Tollway near Route 59. She was 21. After her death, the Schlachtas were spurred into action to try to discourage drunken driving. Gerri Schlachta, 73, said she has spoken to high school groups about not drinking and driving. She said she also has been part of victim impact panels speaking to drivers charged with drunken driving.

With this being the threeday Labor Day weekend, the Schlachtas said they hoped retelling the story of losing their daughter will deter others from driving drunk and possibly causing another family a lifetime of grief.

don’t realize,” said Richard Schlachta, 75, his voice trailing off.

“He served his time and went on,” Gerri Schlachta said of the man who drove drunk and killed their daughter. “Our sentence is forever. My jail – I won’t ever leave it.”

was killed. Jason was 9.

“I had two miscarriages before I had Noelle,” Gerri Schlachta said. “She was what we had waited for. And I picked the name because it was my father’s name, Noel. … I said if I ever had a daughter, I would name her Noelle.”

Noelle Schlachta was a 1985 graduate of the now-closed Valley Lutheran High School, formerly in St. Charles. After high school, she was a student at Elgin Community College while working as a marketing coordinator when she was killed, her mother said.

The Sunday morning she died, the family was at home instead of at church, Gerri Schlachta said.

“We were not going to church because we were getting ready for our relatives who were coming from Germany to the U.S.,” Gerri Schlachta said.

“They came right to our front door, the police,” Rich Schlachta, 75, said.

The driver, Michael Coolidge, 25, a Woodstock resident at the time, ran his pickup truck into the rear of Noelle Schlachta’s 1983 Oldsmobile,

sending it into an oncoming semitrailer. His blood-alcohol level was 0.20 percent, twice the 0.10 percent legal limit at the time. In 1997, the limit was reduced to 0.08 percent, according to the Illinois Secretary of State website.

“He came up behind her at 95 miles an hour,” Gerri Schlachta said. “He hit her so hard, and she went flying across the highway. We did not have an open casket.”

In a plea agreement, Coolidge was sentenced to two years in prison for reckless homicide.

Coolidge never apologized, Gerri Schlachta said.

According to a spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of States, records show Coolidge moved to Montana, where he does not have a driver’s license.

When contacted in Montana, Coolidge said he had no comment regarding Noelle Schlachta.

Gerri and Rich Schlachta said they continue to struggle with their daughter’s death.

They have not had a Christmas tree in their house since Noelle Schlachta died. They recently ordered a headstone for

her grave in Union Cemetery, St. Charles. They said they feel cheated out of the life she should have had – getting married and having children.

“The grandchildren I would have had from Noelle are buried with her,” Gerri Schlachta said.

••• Rita Kreslin, executive director of the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, said many families travel over the three-day Labor Day weekend because it’s the end of summer.

“Unfortunately, at many backyard barbecues, alcohol is flowing freely,” Kreslin said.

“We try to remind people [to] celebrate safely. And if partaking in drinking, to make sure they have a designated driver and are making good decisions.

It’s just devastating what happens when they hit the road if they are impaired. … People make poor decisions when they start drinking.”

She reluctantly went to give it back, but this time was different. Mrs. Kolish wouldn’t accept the book because Charlotte’s Web was Olivia’s to keep. Geneva hosts food drive during ‘Hunger Action Month’ GENEVA – The city of Geneva is hosting a community food drive this month, which is Hunger Action Month for the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Donation boxes will be accessible during normal business hours at six municipal buildings, part of an effort to highlight the problem and show how to help, Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“Too often, when we see challenges in the community, we struggle with exactly what we can do,” Burns said. “The food bank’s solution is simple and effective – donate money, donate food or donate your time. Each one of those contributions will help a family.”

Burns said even a $1 contribution will buy $8 worth of groceries. A $15 contribution will provide a backpack of food for a student and two siblings for those who don’t have enough food over the weekend, he said.

“It’s incredible that in this day and age, we have friends and neighbors who go hungry,” Burns said. “And we have the power to change that in a most simple and effective way.”

The Northern Illinois Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that provides meals and programs serving more than 71,000 people each week. Food bank spokesman Erik Jacobsen said Hunger Action Month is a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of hunger. The Northern Illinois Food Bank is one of 200 food banks working

Arlene was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and its Resurrection Choir. She was an avid golfer and was the Ladies Club Champion in 2006-2007 at Santa Lucia Country Club at Port St. Lucie, FL. She had served as President of the Celestial City Ladies Golf League and the Sunset Hills Ladies Golf League. She established a fund raising event, the Ladies Fall Classic to benefit Illinois Neurological Institute.

She helped established the Boys Track and Field Booster Club at Pekin Community High School.

She had been a volunteer for OSF St. Francis Hospice and enjoyed quilting.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Michael Andrejek officiating. There will be a Rosary service at 4:15 p.m. and visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory 2131 Velde Dr. Pekin. Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Pekin.

She is survived by sons, Alessandro Piccinini of Lacey, and Daniel Piccinini of New York, NY; six grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Clinton C. Beckford, age 104, of St. Charles, formerly of Chicago and also lived a number of years in Addison passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015, at Journey Care in Barrington surrounded by his family.

He was born August 11, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois the son of Eugene and Emma Beckford (Avichouser) Beckford.

Clinton studied business at the University of Chicago. For many years he operated his own printing business out of his home in Chicago. Clinton was a dedicated baseball player known for his knuckle ball pitch and played for the Milwaukee Braves farm team. He was also an avid Cubs fan. Clinton played guitar and was a great story teller keeping his audience rapt with tales from his childhood. He was a great teacher of his faith to his family. Clinton was a ballroom dancer who took pride in always being well dressed. He enjoyed watching the Kentucky Derby and played the horses whenever he could. Clinton was loved and admired by all who knew him and they attributed his long full life to his faith in God and worry free nature.

Clinton is survived by his children, Gail of Huntley, Gary (Linda) of Huntley, Darlene Piazza of Elgin, Guy (Christine) of Wheaton; grandchildren, Pete (Victoria) Piazza, Mike (Jackie) Beckford, Toni (Frank) Urso, Jeanne (Tom) Todd, Knute Beckford, Kirsten (Brent) Wallace, Carly (Ryan) Mastandrea; great grandchildren, Michael, Dominic, Frankie, Megan, Vinny, Marissa, Alana, Aiden, Abby, Gianna, River; and many other dear relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald; sister, Alieen; son-in-law, John; and loving wife, Florence (Oppenlander) who passed away in 1998.

Erich Schlachta said. “Supervisors in the past have questioned me about that. I certainly would not do something that would dishonor my sister’s memory at all. What I do in the field, I do by the book. It’s always been that way.”

Erich Schlachta said he does not regard those he pulls over for drunken driving “any different than people who made a mistake – and I treat them with respect, as well.”

“People make bad choices.

And a lot of the situations I’ve had with people who are intoxicated is, as they sober up, they realize they have made a bad choice,” Erich Schlachta said.

“And when I run into them again, they thank me for what I did,” he said. “The first thing alcohol impairs is judgment.

It goes right out the window.

As human beings, we all make mistakes. I’ve been doing this for 18 years now. I see a lot of people make bad choices.”

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation statistics, in 1982, there were 1,651 crash fatalities in the state, and of those, 968 were alcohol-related, Kreslin said.

In 2010, there were 927 crash fatalities, and of those, 366 were alcohol-related. In 2013, there were 991 crash fatalities with 317 killed in alcohol-related crashes, Kreslin said.

“So we’ve made a huge difference,” Kreslin said. “It’s made a difference for several reasons – organizations like ours – because of laws charging and our partners in law enforcement, governors, the secretary of state. Many people that have changed the attitudes of people that it’s not OK to drink and drive. It’s just not.”

She said the average cost of a drunken driving defense is $10,000 to $14,000, so that is another incentive for people not to drink and drive.

“You could get a hotel room or pay Uber – or you could go to court and face a victim impact panel,” Kreslin said.

Hood, parts stolen from car undergoing repairs

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – A Batavia Township resident reported the theft of more than $6,000 in parts from a vehicle undergoing repairs, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

A resident of the 900 block of Main Street reportedly told police he noticed the burglary of his red 2004 Dodge about 10:20 a.m. Aug. 25. The vehicle reportedly was in his driveway.

The hood was completely removed, and the front passenger door was pried open, police reported.

Other stolen items included a fiberglass spoiler and $3,500 in specialty accessories and parts for the vehicle, according to the report. The 15 to 20 parts had been in the

trunk, which reportedly had its access pull pin cut.

In total, the value of the stolen items was estimated at $6,575, according to the report. After the evidence was collected and the scene was photographed, the deputy was approached by another man who saw a suspicious vehicle about 7:30 a.m., according to the report.

The vehicle – a dark blue newer model Ford Taurus – reportedly drove slowly past the man’s residence. Thinking the motorist was lost, the man stopped, but the car quickly turned south on Evergreen Drive and then turned around to head east on Main Street, police reported.

Kaneland homecoming parade TRIPLE PLAY PROMOTION to start at Elburn Village Hall $99.99

ELBURN – Kaneland High School’s homecoming parade will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 30 at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn, according to a news release.

In the release, the school’s student council cosponsor, Lori Grant, called it the school’s “first-ever homecoming parade.” School officials have said the intention is for four villages to host the parade on a rotating basis every year in alphabetical order – Elburn,

Kaneville, Maple Park and Sugar Grove.

“The parade is the first in what is expected to be a new tradition for the Knights,” the release stated.

The parade will start at Elburn Village Hall and head north on First Street. It will conclude at the Elburn and Countryside Community Center at 525 N. Main St., Elburn. The parade is expected to include the marching bands for Kaneland High School and Kaneland Harter Middle School, as well as the high school pompom and cheerleading squads, fall

sports teams from both schools and boosters. Homecoming king and queen candidates also are expected to be part of the parade. Also, the release indicated the parade will feature members of the class of 1965 in a 50th reunion float.

After the parade, there will be a powderpuff football game at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. Admission to that event will be free. Concessions will be sold, and a 50/50 raffle will be held to help fund student council activities throughout the school year.

Possible attempted child luring reported in N. Aurora

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Three 13-year-old girls reported a possible attempted child luring that took place Thursday night in North Aurora, according to a news release issued by the village’s police department.

According to the release, the girls were walking at 6:55 p.m. in the area of Comiskey Avenue and Kilbery Lane.

They told police a white car passed them and honked, and someone called out to them.

They continued walking, but the car made a U-turn, and the male occupants told the girls to get into the car, the release stated.

According to the release, those in the car did not approach the girls, but the girls began to run and called 911.

One of the girls took a photo before running.

The car is described as an older four-door sedan. It is white, with gray near the bottom of the vehicle and black rims.

The release indicated the driver was a white man in his 20s, skinny with black hair and wearing red glasses and a dress shirt. The passenger was described as a white man in his 20s with “spray tan” skin.

The incident took place less than a week after two reports involving male strangers in St. Charles. One of those incidents took place after school on Aug. 28, and the other one took place the evening of Aug. 29.

In the Aug. 28 incident,

St. Charles police said, a suspect was described as white and heavyset, in his 40s, with white or gray hair, wearing glasses and possibly having a slight beard. Police said he was wearing a yellow Hawaiian shirt with a black splint on his left arm and wrist. Police said the man followed a girl to her apartment complex at 4:56 p.m. Aug. 28 on Indiana Street in St. Charles.

The Aug. 29 incident took place at 9:14 p.m. on Voltaire Lane in St. Charles. A girl was walking toward a park when she saw a man standing next to a neighbor’s home near a bush, according to police. He was described as white with a thin build, in his late 40s to early 50s with dark, short hair and a dark goatee. Police said he was wearing a white striped shirt and blue jeans.

North Aurora Deputy Police Chief Scott Buziecki stated in an email that the North Aurora incident and St. Charles incidents were not thought to be related.

“The suspect descriptions are very different, so probably not,” Buziecki wrote.

Buziecki noted that to prepare for such situations, “Parents should teach their kids: Don’t get in a vehicle. Go to a public place with people around. Call 911.”

“Normal adults don’t ask kids for directions or help with puppies or other animals,” Buziecki wrote.

Elburn 9-year-old aims to ‘Paint the Town Blue’

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – When Connor Anderson heard about the recent death of a Fox Lake police officer, the 9-year-old Elburn resident said it made him sad.

“I wanted to support police officers,” he said.

He decided to do something about it. At 11 a.m. today, those interested can show up at the Elburn Police Station, at 301 E. North St., Elburn.

There will be ribbons, decorating supplies and light bulbs for those who want to “Paint the Town Blue.”

Connor, a fourth-grader at John Stewart Elementary School in Elburn, was upset over the death of Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz, who was killed this week in the line of duty.

To show support for Gliniewicz and others in law enforcement, those gathered in Elburn will put blue ribbons around town and hand out blue light bulbs residents perhaps can use as porch lights to show their support. Ribbons will be put up throughout the downtown area and other areas, he said.

The great snake debate The hunt for a potentially venomous cottonmouth snake has been making headlines and causing a stir. Since the reported reptile at-large has yet to be properly identified, a snake debate has ensued, raising questions that border on extreme, like, “Is the whole thing a hoax?” “Did the media sensationalize the situation?” And, “Will I die if I go near a pond?”

Coverage of this story has provided an opportunity for reporters to reflect on the news-gathering process, reminding media organizations that the first to press is not always best. Maybe the Kane County Chronicle didn’t get the scoop on this story, but we did report on the situation with accuracy and steered clear of simply regurgitating information collected by other news organizations. The race to be first can lead to mistakes and prompt organizations to weigh in before having all of the facts.

That seems to be the case with the story about the snake. Mistakes were made in the initial reporting of the story by an area news organization. A headline, “Poisonous snake lurking in suburban Geneva,” didn’t quite have it right. No confirmation had been made as of the afternoon of Sept. 4 that the snake is, in fact, poisonous or that it is a cottonmouth, which is nonindigenous to these parts.

Local naturalist Pam Erickson Otto voiced her own skepticism in a column she wrote for the Kane County Chronicle, when she stated that “sightings of a fat, and most likely happy, snake in an area of unincorporated Kane County near Geneva that has a pond nearby turns into ‘Deadly snake on the loose in Geneva.’ ” Further, the disseminated image of the snake, which was initially broadcasted and published online as THE elusive “poisonous” snake, turned out to be a Googled image of a random cottonmouth provided by the man who made the reported sighting.

Suburban Wildlife Control employee Brad Lundsteen, who is still looking for the snake, said the media’s coverage has ultimately been good. But since the attention has died down, it has become easier for him to do his job.

As we anxiously await an outcome, we hope that all journalists will keep in mind that getting the scoop isn’t always the same as getting the facts.

U.S. immigration debate needs a dose of realism BLOOMBERG NEWS Anchor babies, birthing centers, giant walls, mass deportations: The debate over immigration in the U.S. presidential campaign often calls to mind a hyperventilating Hollywood drama rather than a calm, intelligent discussion.

The most urgent issue is not the cost of illegal immigration, because that cost is modest at worst. The challenge is to reform the country’s immigration system – which still labors under principles from the 1950s – so that it works for the 21st century.

It’s wrong to call for this discussion to be postponed until the border is secure, as some Republicans wish, since securing the border (insofar as that’s possible) goes hand in hand with fixing the system. And it’s simply delusional, as some Republicans also wish, to think the roughly 11 million unauthorized immigrants already in the country can be deported or somehow wished away.

As a practical matter, and putting humanitarian considerations aside, deportations on anything like that scale would take years and involve prohibitive expense – both directly and through their wider economic effects. It isn’t going to happen. In most cases, some way to render the

presence of unauthorized immigrants lawful will have to be found.

However, this in turn requires another question to be answered: What about the 4.4 million would-be immigrants stuck in the queue for legal permanent residency? At current rates of admission, some of these applicants will have to wait more than two decades before their visas are granted. This backlog – which grew 2.3 percent last year – involves a big economic cost in its own right and encourages illegal immigration, as well. It springs from outdated priorities that threaten the U.S.’s future as a thriving nation of immigrants.

U.S. immigration law puts family reunification ahead of attracting workers with skills in short supply. This no longer makes sense.

More than half of the immigrant visa backlog is for siblings of U.S. citizens. The case for granting residency or citizenship to them, or to the adult offspring of newly minted U.S. citizens, was more compelling before cheap, speedy air travel, not to mention the Internet and Skype, made staying in touch easier.

Meanwhile, restrictions on skillsbased immigration increasingly put the U.S. at a disadvantage in today’s competition for global talent. In 2012, skilled immigrants accounted for only 6 percent of all new U.S.

immigrant visas. Compare that with 26 percent in Canada and 33 percent in Australia.

More than two years ago, the Senate passed a comprehensive bill that seeks to fix such problems. It would shut down the sibling visa category, among others, and greatly expand the number of skilled or merit-based admissions. It also would create a path to lawful status for those here illegally, sending them to the back of the line. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that enacting the bill would lead over the next decade to a net increase of 9.6 million people in the U.S. – and net savings of $135 billion.

The bill isn’t perfect, and other reform proposals are worth entertaining. But the House of Representatives has taken a piecemeal approach that has mostly focused on punitive enforcement measures.

Instead of talking about fantastical walls and roundups, the presidential candidates should be talking more about changing the law to get the right people in, clearing the backlog, normalizing the status of most of those already here, and strengthening reporting and other systems to discourage future illegal immigration. Enough with the low-budget drama. This discussion needs to grow some brains.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

BULLDOGS HANG ON Garrett runs for another 3-touchdown performance in Batavia’s win

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia football coach Dennis Piron knew the Bulldogs were going to get all they could handle from South Elgin on Friday in their first home game of the season.

But the Bulldogs had an answer.

Zach Garrett ran for three touchdowns for the second week in a row to lead Batavia to a 35-28 win in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

The senior Zach Garrett running back’s touchdown with 1:59 left proved to be the difference.

“South Elgin came out strong and kind of surprised me, that’s for sure,” Garrett said. “We made a few mistakes but correct them down the stretch and that’s what matters. Our line did a great job and really made things easy for me. Finding five or six yards every time seemed simple with how well they kept blocking.”

It looked like Garrett’s final score, from five yards out to give the Bulldogs (2-0) a 14-point advantage, would be the icing on the cake, but South Elgin stormed down the field quickly to make things interesting.

But junior tight end Glenn Albanese, who had five catches for 79 yards, had his biggest touch of the game recovering the ensuing onside kick.

Batavia quarterback Kyle Niemiec took two knees to run the clock out and send the Bulldogs to another 2-0 start.

“Everyone stepped up tonight,” Coffey said. “Glenn was the man there for a while. He

did a great job of getting open and finding room. All of our wideouts stepped up and made plays. It was awesome to see and great to come out with a win.”

No matter how they did it, or how the Bulldogs thought they played, they walked away Friday just another step closer to that “feeling of dreaming about something special” that Piron allowed them to do before the season.

“This was a good game for us to learn from and get better,” Garrett said. “We kept fighting and hung in there every time we got down. We were able to hang on and get the win and that’s all that we wanted to do tonight.”

Saints preach patience after loss

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Any one without binoculars or a sideline view of Friday’s St. Charles East-Jacobs football game strained to see the yellow numbers on the backs of the Golden Eagles’ jerseys.

Charting the actual Jacobs players proved to be a far easier proposition.

The Golden Eagles seized control early and maintained it throughout a 35-10 nonconference victory, leaving the 0-2 Saints straining to keep up.

“We’re such a young team.

We’ve got to be patient with the youth and the inexperience,” East senior linebacker Jack Russell said. “We’ve done some good things these past two weeks against tough opponents. This week wasn’t our best performance; we know that. But we have seven more games. You have to win five to get in (the playoffs).

So get these guys all together. Rally the troops. I’m realy excited for the rest of the season.”

With a 2-0 start, Jacobs already has a head start on jubiliation. Twin senior running backs Matt Barnes and Sean Barnes both ran for two touchdowns, complementing some

“There’s a lot of depth on this team,” Sean Barnes said.

“It’s not just me and (Matt Barnes). We can run and throw the ball pretty well, and this was a great team win.”

Jacobs defenders stacked the tackle box against East before long, challenging the shifty ballcarriers in the Saints’ newly-installed, triple-option offense.

Senior Cam Canales, East’s feature back, gashed the Golden Eagles for runs of 26 and 25 yards before halftime, but the Saints only attempted one pass in that span – backup quarterback Aiden Wright’s incompletion in the closing minutes of the second quarter.

Starter Zach Mitchell appeared to drop back on the last play of the first quarter, but ultimately stepped up in the pocket to return to the line of scrimmage, the East 35-yard

line. Trouble was, Mitchell fumbled before finding the grass, and Sean Barnes recovered.

Two plays later, Matt Barnes scored on a two-yard run, with the point-after providing a 14-0 lead. A 33-yard connection from Katrenick to Nathan Meland set up the score.

About two minutes of clock time earlier, Jacobs’ first touchdown drive ended when Katrenick and Kyle Copeland hooked up for a 32-yard score.

“The long passes, we had positioning on both, I thought,” East coach Bryce Farquhar said. “We had people in position that just didn’t make the plays.”

Canales led the East rushing attack with 86 yards on 16 carries. Junior Dante Macaluso, one of several juniors playing key roles this season, scored the team’s lone touchdown on a 41-yard run with 7:13 left in the third quarter.

Nick Candre – who Farquhar called “one of the best kickers around; I don’t think there’s any doubt” – drilled a 45-yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining in the first half as the Saints trailed, 14-3, at intermission.

The Saints, who started 0-2 last season, will aim to

repeat the same pattern they followed in 2014: enter the win column with a Week 3 victory against Upstate Eight Conference River Division counterpart Elgin. East will host the Maroons for its homecoming game next week.

After that, the Saints will play two of their next three games on the road, including visits to conference powers and 2014 playoff teams Batavia (Week 4) and Geneva (Week 6).

Mitchell left Friday’s game with an undisclosed injury, but the Saints nor their coach were sulking.

“I don’t typically go over the injury report list,” Farquhar said, “but we’ve got a lot of kids out, you know. I told the kids at the end of the game (that) we’re not using injuries, we’re not using youth. At the end of the day, we’re 0-2, and that’s not acceptable for this program.

“And our kids understand that. They don’t want to be here. But we’re going through a new offense. We’re going through a new defense. And our learning pains are really catching up with us right now.

We’re getting down on that depth chart, and that’s fine.

We want those kids to execute the same way we want our (starters) to execute.”

“I saw some positive things in the second half,” Fedderly said. “I was proud to see us come back with the touchdown kind of early in the third quarter, and to make some stops,

and move the ball. So I saw some positive things in the second half, which encourages me after the start we had.”

Kaneland surrendered a 25-yard TD run to Stilko to make it a 28-7 game early in the fourth.

A 1-yard touchdown run by Zachary Parker completed the game’s scoring with less than a minute remaining.

“They made some plays and are a good team,” Fedderly said. “I’m glad we were able play them in Week 2. It was a good opportunity for us to go on the road and play a team like this.”

Dixon drops Burlington to 0-2 BURLINGTON – Dixon jumped out to an early lead Friday and would not relent to claim a 26-6 victory over the Burlington Central football team in Big Northern Conference crossover play.

The Dukes opened the night with an 11-play, 71-yard drive, with Nathan Gascoigne completing four of his five passes.

The senior quarterback threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, all three going to Kyle LeBlanc.

Dixon coach Dave Smith was glad to see the dynamic senior take advantage of his opportunities.

“He’s a very good athlete and a senior and it shows,” Smith said.

OAK LAWN – In an action packed third quarter, the Geneva football team pulled away from the Richards to claim a 35-20 victory.

Senior quarterback Sean Chambers threw for 149 yards and three touchdowns in the third quarter, hitting three different receivers for touchdowns.

The Vikings trailed, 14-7, before Chambers hit tailback Justin Taormina on a 30-yard touchdown reception, Taormina’s second in the game.

The Vikings (2-0) gained the lead after Ryan Skibinski and Jack Wassel caught touchdowns later in the quarter from Chambers, who has thrown six touchdown passes this season.

The Vikings also were able to limit penalties, which plagued them last week against West Aurora.

“They cleaned up their game. We just tried to talk to them as men and tell them,

you can’t play against two teams. They took care of their business,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said.

Three-time all-conference defensive tackle Stephen Sean Kemp recorded his third Chambers tackle of the game with 6:30 remaining in the second quarter, giving the senior 200 total tackles for his career, Jack Wassel not a small feat for a defensive lineman.

“I didn’t know I hit that number, but I’ve been playing hard and Rob Wicinski doing the best I can,” said Kemp, who finished with eight tackles.

Today’s Leavey Invitational boys and girls cross country invitational traditionally ushers in the beginning of the season, even for those schools that already have raced before this weekend.

“Yeah, the big kickoff is the Leavey,” St. Charles East boys coach Chris Bosworth said. “Everybody gets pumped for it.”

St. Charles North boys coach Kevin Harrington is especially excited about the early barometer the meet provides against Upstate Eight Conference River Division competition.

“It’ll be interesting to see what some of the other teams are running,” Harrington said. “I’d like to think that St. Charles East has a lot of bullets in the gun, so it’ll be fun to see what they do. But … I think there’s a lot of parity in the Tri-Cities. It’s going to be fun to see where we’re at at the Leavey and then see what happens a couple of months later when we show up at conference and regionals.

“That’s how we’re going to judge a lot of our year. See where we’re at in the beginning, and then how far we’ve come by the end.”

Teamwork propels reloading Knights

A sea of reluctant faces greeted Kaneland girls tennis coach Tim Larsen

during early summer workouts.

Tasked with replacing a stable of veteran, all-state talent, the Knights at first appeared uneasy about the job.

Now, after only a few weeks of practice and two competitions, Larsen calls the emerging group tremendously fun to mold.

“The teamwork this year is better than almost any year I’ve coached,” Larsen said. “Everbody’s encouraging each other. They’ve been applauding each other even when they’re playing each other, and that’s great to see.”

Every member of the starting lineup climbed at least one position from 2014.

The most seasoned athlete in the group, senior No. 1 singles player Brittany Zablocki, was in the No. 2 slot last fall.

The second doubles tandem of Emily Mirocha and Katelyn Blaszynski competed in the No. 4 slot in 2014. Apart from that, the rest of the team is getting acclimated to the speed of their respective position.

Kaneland will take a break from the courts from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today when it hosts a team fundraiser car wash at the Maple Park Fire Department, 305 S. County Line Road.

Tuesday marked the start of that hopeful odyssey, as the Beads featured a hodgepodge lineup in a dual at Oswego East.

“It’s a long season, a lot of meets. We didn’t want to throw everybody into their best events right off the bat,” Rosary coach Bill Schalz said. “We moved some people around, but we had some really great swims. … It really gave us a chance to see some of our new freshmen, and we’ve got a pretty extraordinary freshman class.”

One such newcomer, Athena Ye, eclipsed the state cut in the 50-yard freestyle (24.5 seconds) at the meet.

Schalz admits a team state title for the current group is “a little uncharted waters,” but he’s counting on the individual successes of several returners during last season’s second-place tie to add up.

“Our goal is to win the state meet.

That’s our goal this year,” Schalz said.

“I think Lake Forest is going to be real formidable. They don’t lose anybody. St. Charles North is going to be real good.

After that, it pretty much spreads out pretty quick. But yeah, our goal is to win state, and I think we’ve got a good shot to do it.”

I haven’t really been out east that much at all. This was my first time going that far east. But it’s pretty great.

It feels really good. It’s definitely a big relief. Just not having to go and put myself out as much to college coaches and stuff, not getting them to have to come. I know the coaches at William & Mary love me and I love them, and its just a great fit. It’s really, really relieving.

What’s the vibe around the Vikings this season?

We’re really excited. We definitely have some goals set in mind, personal and ones as a team. It’s definitely exciting.

We hope to do really well. It should be good.

Again, it’s early, but any thoughts on a college major?

I want to major in biology. … I took biology honors freshman year and I really liked the genetics section. After college undergraduate, I want to hopefully, … go into genetics research at a pharmaceutical company.

The coaches are great. Geneva junior middle hitter Ally Mullen added to the Vikings girls volleyball team’s arsenal of college-bound athletes when she committed to NCAA Division I William & Mary last month. Located in Williamsburg, Virginia, the school is the second-oldest college in the nation, but the experience still figures to offer plenty of novelty for Mullen, who said she isn’t as well-traveled to the eastern United States. Though cattails are found growing in all parts of the world, the ones commonly found in Illinois include the common cattail (latifolis), the narrow-leaved cattail (angustifolia) and the hybrid cattail (glauca).

Are cattails good or bad?

If you have a shallow shoreline on your property you have probably experienced this dilemma: Should your cattails stay or go?

Although quite lovely at the beginning, they can quickly take over the shoreline preventing access to the water.

Botanically named Typha, the cattail family members found in Illinois include common cattail (latifolis) considered to be native to the area, narrow-leaved cattail (angustifolia) and hybrid cattail (glauca). Both of the latter are considered to be invasive species.

Cattails thrive in one to two feet of water and need sunlight to survive. The narrow-leaved species grows in deeper water, making it more invasive farther out from the shore.

There are some positive aspects to cattails. They have a unique appearance and are found growing in all parts of the world. For this reason, they are often found in works of art in all

LEARNING TO GROW Darlie Simerson cultures. The female plant gives you the cute, fuzzy brown “tail” for which they are named.

Cattails also take up nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, thus cleaning the run-off water from fertilized lawns. They help to prevent bank erosion and provide a habitat for birds.

There are also negative aspects to cattails. They tend to dominate the shoreline and prevent other plants from thriving. The plants may prevent water access by the property owner. Cattails are very aggressive naturalizers, meaning they spread very quickly from season to season, if not controlled, as if they are native to the area.

So, what if you decide you want to control or eradicate the cattails? There are two ways to

control cattails. You may cut them off below water level to drown the plant. This will work only if there is a stable water level. The other option is to have a licensed professional apply an aquatic herbicide.

Keep in mind that you will gain access to your shore but lose the positive elements of bank stabilization and water filtration.

You may consider controlling cattails in only a portion of the shoreline or replacing them with native plant species. Talk with your local nursery about options for your particular setting.

Remember, the birds love to have somewhere to land and nest near water.

GENEVA – As part of its next Brown Bag Lunch program, the Geneva History Museum will present “The Art of Beer Branding” with Penrose Brewing Company founder Eric Hobbs at noon Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the museum, 113 S. Third St., Geneva.

Hobbs will speak about label design and how it’s used to establish brand identity.

The program will take place during the museum’s current exhibition, “Brewing Identity: The Art of Craft Beer” – a traveling exhibition that highlights craft breweries from the Midwestern United States. Created by students in the Northern Illinois University Museum Studies program, the exhibition showcases the artwork found on beer can and bottle labels and the artists who created them.

Brown Bag Lunch programs take place at noon on the second Tuesday of each month from September through May at the museum.

Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch, and the museum will provide cookies, water, tea and coffee.

Admission is $5 a person or $3 for museum members.

Baby’s sponge bath can be enjoyable ritual for mom or dad Dear Doctor K: I’m about to become a new mom. I’ve heard it’s best to give my newborn son a sponge bath, but I’ve never done this before. Can you give me some guidance?

Dear Reader: Don’t worry; giving the baby a sponge bath is easy, even enjoyable, with experience. Give your baby a sponge bath until the umbilical cord falls off. When the baby is born, the umbilical cord is cut. A small stump of cord remains where the baby’s belly button is. That stump of cord usually falls off in the first week or two after the baby is born. Once the cord falls off, you can give your baby a tub bath.

You can give your baby a sponge bath on a changing table, on the counter next to the sink, in a bassinet or even on your lap. My mother told me when I was very young that she sat on the edge of the bathtub when she sponged me. That way the water and soap from the sponge would fall into the tub. She reassured me that it was just the water and soap that went down the drain – I was too big. Whew!

Before you begin, gather all

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the necessary supplies: a soft washcloth or sponge, cotton balls, gentle soap, baby shampoo, warm (but not hot) water and a dry towel. Never leave your baby unattended, even for a moment, on any raised surface.

First clean his ears, eyes and nose with a cotton ball that has been dipped in warm water without any soap and wrung out.

Soap is NOT recommended on the face because it can irritate your baby’s eyes and nose. Wipe around the eyes, but do not wipe across them. Clean your baby’s outer ears, but do not clean inside the ears.

If your baby seems cold, wrap him in a towel and only uncover the body parts you are washing.

Use a “tear-free” baby shampoo or mild soap to wash your baby’s scalp and hair. Support his head with one hand while using the other to wash the area gently.

Wipe off the suds with a damp

cloth. Then cover the ear canal and rinse carefully with a small amount of water. Do not pour any water over your baby’s face.

Wipe the mouth, chin and folds of his neck with a wet washcloth. Wipe his chest, arms and hands, and then pat dry. Avoid wetting the umbilical cord area.

If the area does get wet, gently dab it dry. Turn your baby on his side or tummy to wash his back.

Wipe the legs and feet, and don’t forget to dry behind the knees and between the toes.

Save the diaper area for last.

Remove the diaper and wash the genitals and bottom. (Girls should always be wiped front to back.)

Dry well before putting on a fresh diaper.

Some pediatricians recommend bathing your baby only once or twice a week. But many parents make nightly baths part of their bedtime ritual, because it’s fun – for them and the baby.

Dr. Wallace: I have been a reader of your column for several years and I know you never approve of older guys dating younger girls. Well, you need to hear my story and then you will know that this sometimes happens, and it’s not always wrong.

I’ve been dating girls since I was 15, and I’m now 24. I’ve dated girls of all ages and I’ve been serious about a few of them in their twenties, but I’ve also dated several girls younger than I am and I’ve never met anyone who turned me on more than Linda.

Now came the key point of the deal. After a weak jump overcall, responder may bid one level higher than he would have done in an uncontested auction.

Here, North’s three-heart bid showed the values for a single raise. With a game-invitational hand, he would have jumped to four hearts. And with a gameforce, he would have cue-bid four diamonds.

It is expected that South will play the cards accurately, aided by West’s intervention.

Here, East would have done well to bid three no-trump, which was unbeatable given the 2-2 diamond break. But she did even better when South went on to four hearts with no extra values whatsoever. East happily doubled.

West led the spade seven, and East cleverly put in the jack to find out who held the queen.

South won with her ace and ran the club queen. The defenders took that trick, two diamonds, one spade and, eventually, one trump for down two, plus 500.

South did not face up to the facts and paid a steep price.
