Lauzen touts accomplishments at Elburn chamber lunch

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Nearly two years have passed since Chris Lauzen left the Illinois State Senate after he was voted in as chairman of the Kane County Board, and Lauzen said he believes that has put him in a greater position to make a difference.

“This is so much better,” Lauzen said Thursday as he addressed a meeting of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce at the Masonic Temple on Route 47 in the village. The appearance was billed as a “state of the county” address.

He said being a part of county government was much more fulfilling than his role in state government.

He said there are those who say they are frustrated with all government, but he stressed t h a t “ l o c a l Chris Lauzen government does do its share.”

Lauzen touted some of the key activities that have taken place during his term, such as the continuation of a property tax levy freeze, the ground-

breaking for a new shooting range for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the creation of Kane County Connects, an online initiative with a goal of engaging residents and providing them with information about events and news in the area.

The property tax freeze was a key campaign issue for Lauzen. He said he was “so frustrated after 20 years in state government,” adding, “I couldn’t clean it up. He said it was difficult to continue the property tax levy freeze this year, and he said he has heard from people who have said it isn’t enough to freeze it.

“I hear, ‘Chris, what we really want you do to is lower it,’ ” Lauzen said, adding such action would be difficult.

“We’re focused on not making it worse.”

The groundbreaking for the Kane County Regional Training Center took place in May. It will be on the same campus of the Kane County Judicial Center and the sheriff’s office.

It will have six shooting lanes, and it will be able to accommodate different training scenarios.

Lauzen said the hope is that there are not many situations for sheriff’s officials to use such action, but “if there

is a problem, you want them to shoot straight. In order to do that, they have to practice.”

He also praised the efforts of Rick Nagel, who runs Kane County Connects, saying Nagel “grew it from zero viewers to 50,000 viewers.” Lauzen urged those in attendance to submit their news items to Nagel.

Lauzen said he was happy to talk to a chamber group, saying his “favorite audience is people who run their own business.” Later, when asked about pension reform, he called on those in the room to do what they could to spread their influence as leaders in a community.

Group opposed to Batavia industrial park seeks new hearing hensive plan and zoning map to allow for an industrial park on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses.

The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. City officials in 2005 annexed the property. The development originally proposed for the property included residential zoning on the eastern 36 acres, with 242 town houses proposed. The western 20 acres was to be zoned general commercial. Skokie-based The Missner Group now pro-

poses to build two large industrial buildings on the entire 56acre property.

The Batavia City Council hasn’t taken a formal vote on the proposal. Patrick Kinnally, attorney for the group Keep Batavia Neighborhoods, recently wrote a letter to Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke stating “since 90 days have passed since the planning commission voted, the city is without authority to consider the plan commission’s vote or recommendation. Accordingly, my client demands the process

start anew with appropriate notice and new hearings as required by law.”

Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said Kinnally is correct in his assertion.

“It’s just a procedural thing,” Buening said. “It doesn’t make a difference from a time perspective. The Missner Group will have to ask for a new hearing.”

Buening said the developer has yet to submit plans to the city.

Batavia Neighborhoods, along with other residents, in July crowded the Batavia City Council chambers to show opposition to the project.

Keep Batavia Neighborhoods has started a website, www.keepbatavianeighborhoods.com, and has posted signs along Kirk Road in opposition to the proposal. Among other issues, the group is concerned about the additional truck traffic the proposed industrial park would generate and its impact on the surrounding area.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The St. Charles Park District’s Otter Cove Aquatic Park recently was crowded with people taking advantage of a late summer surge of warm weather before the park closed for the season.

“These past two Sundays were our two busiest days of the year,” said Steven Muenz, assistant superintendent of recreation for the St. Charles Park District.

However, before the current surge of heat, the area saw plenty of cool and wet days this summer, which in turn hurt attendance at pools and festivals in central Kane County.

This summer’s weather mirrored last summer, which also lacked the heat typically associated with summer. This year, Accuweather recorded only one 90-degree temperature in July and one 90-degree temperature in August, months that are typically the hottest of the summer.

“In terms of temperatures, this was a more average summer,” Northern Illinois University meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said. “We didn’t have a lot of extreme heat or even temperatures in the 90s.”

In comparison, the summer of 2012 was hot and dry. According to the National Weather Service, the mercury hit 100 degrees or higher on four occasions that summer and the temperature was at least 90 degrees for seven consecutive days.

“The last two years we have caught up on rainfall and had more average temperatures,” Sebenste said.

Otter Cove closed for the season Monday. Otter Cove’s attendance figures this summer were almost identical to its attendance last summer, Muenz said.

Likewise, the cooler weather also affected attendance at the city of St. Charles RiverFest, which was held in early June and is seen as the kickoff to the festival season.

“The weather certainly was one component,” said Julie Farris, executive director of Pride of the Fox Inc., the nonprofit organization that produces the event. “It was an average year. It was average attendance.”

It was rain, not cool temperatures, that adversely impacted the Geneva Chamber of Commerce’s Swedish Days festival in June. Lightning and torrential downpours canceled two consecutive nights of activities, said Geneva Chamber of Commerce communications manager Laura Rush.

But she said throngs of people came out for the rest of the festival’s activities, including the popular Swedish Days Parade.

“It was successful,” Rush said. “Swedish Days is an outdoor festival. You have to adjust to the weather.”

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce is now gearing up for this weekend’s Festival of the Vine, which starts Friday and runs through Sunday.

While thunderstorms are in the forecast for Friday, sunny skies are expected Saturday and Sunday, and temperatures are expected to be in the low 70s, according to Accuweather.

“It’s supposed to be great weather this weekend,” she said.

Attendance was slightly down at the Geneva Park District’s Sunset Pool and

Mill Creek Pool this summer, which Traci Wicks, the Geneva Park District’s director of marketing and public relations, attributed to the summer’s cool temperatures.

However, Wicks said the park district had less closures than last year. The Geneva Park District only started operating the Mill Creek Pool this summer after ShoDeen, a Geneva development and real estate company, donated the facility to the park district.

“We attempt to keep our facilities open to our members rather than close our facility every time the weather is less than perfect swimming weather,” Wicks wrote in an email.

“We choose to reduce the staffing if need is low for the day. It is important to remember that both Sunset and Mill Creek pools are heated, therefore,

for those days the air temperatures are a bit cooler, the water temperatures are perfect.”

On the other hand, the Batavia Park District’s Harold Hall Quarry Beach is not heated. It occupies a former stone quarry and features a sand-bottom swimming area.

The park district in 2012 had a liner installed at Hall Quarry Beach in an attempt to provide warmer water temperatures.

Before the liner was installed, water as cold as 55 degrees was being pumped in by a well.

“Our attendance was definitely down this year,” said Amber Smith, facilities manager in charge of Hall Quarry Beach. “We had to close some days because of all-day rain or if the temperature didn’t reach 70 degrees on some days. I’m hoping for nice, hot weather next summer.”

Narkiewicz, age 89, of St. Charles, formerly of Vancouver, Washington, Geneva, and Batavia, Illinois, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva. She was born May 17, 1925, in Sullivan, IL. Norma enjoyed her time with the Book Club at Baker Methodist Church in St. Charles.

She is survived by her four children, Steven (Nancy) of Salem, Oregon, Cathy (Joe) Stephano of St. Charles, Michael (Faith) of Florence, Colorado, and Deborah (Randy) Scott of St. Charles. Five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a brother, Harold (Marjorie) Kellams of Pensacola, Florida.

Kane County to offer real estate items for bid GENEVA – Kane County, as trustee, has completed its tax deed proceedings on real estate properties that were delinquent for 2010 and mobile homes that were delinquent for 2011 and prior real estate taxes. The county, as trustee, will now offer for sale the real estate and mobile homes obtained to the public.

They will offer approximately 200 real estate items and two mobile home items through a sealed bid auction sale.

All sealed bids must be in the Kane County Treasurer’s Office, located at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building A, Geneva, IL 60134, no later than the close of business on Sept. 19. The sale of these lots and mobile homes should be a major benefit to both the taxing districts and the neighboring property owners, states a news release. Mary Fitzsimmons, age 80, formerly of St. Charles, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in Aurora. She was born September 20, 1933, the daughter of August and Clemence (nee Van Haelst) DePauw.

Mary worked for several years as a cafeteria server for the St. Charles school district, and was beloved for her kindness and generosity for those in need. She also enjoyed helping with cooking and serving meals at the Geneva Senior Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Robert) Cantrall of Aurora; her sons, Kevin Fitzsimmons of St. Charles and Shawn Fitzsimmons of Burlington; her grandchildren, Robert Cantrall Jr., Ryan (Staci) Cantrall, and Michelle Cantrall; her great-grandchildren, Alana, Kaelyn, Isabella, and Ryan Jr.; her sisters, Joanne Van Bogaert and Audrey Heath; two brothers, Richard and James DePauw; and a special friend, Ade Kunzelman and his family.

In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gerald Fitzsimmons; and a sister, Grace Gillis.

St. Charles police share traffic campaign results KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles police traffic safety campaign netted a total of three driving-under-the-influence arrests and 62 citations for various violations, St. Charles police announced this week in a news release.

The campaign was completed during an 18-day enforcement period that ended on Monday, in cooperation with – and funded by – the Illinois

Department of Transportation, according to the release.

It was part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

The 62 citations consisted of the following: 15 citations for speeding; 11 citations for cellphone use while driving; eight citations for safety-belt violations; eight citations for driving without insurance; three citations for driving with a suspended or revoked licenses; and 17 citations for other violations, according to the release.

St. Charles police also gave 53 warnings for various violations, the release said.

During a previous twoweek traffic safety campaign that coincided with Independence Day, St. Charles police charged four motorists with driving under the influence, gave 57 citations and issued 31 warnings for various violations.

The police department advises residents to drive carefully and keep impaired motorists off city streets.

Hunter developed an infection that led to sepsis and meningitis, and the baby was placed on a ventilator. Hunter died on May 10.

“Both these families’ children had multiple surgeries and were at Lurie Children’s Hospital together for extended periods of time,” McCullough said. “They have insurance, but the fundraiser is to help with their portion of the medical bills and the expenses for travel and time off work.”

McCullough said they presold about 150 breakfast tickets during Elburn Days and are hoping for at least 800 people to turn out for the event.

“We want to make sure people know what our fire district has to offer, so we will be having a public demonstration of our services and equipment,” McCullough said.

Cash donations also will be accepted at the main fire station, 210 E. North St., Elburn.

ELBURN – Two Elburn firefighters’ sons born a month apart this year, both with serious medical issues, prompted their fellow firefighters to organize a fundraiser to help.

An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, including sausage and beverages, will be from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Elburn Fire Station 2, 39W950 Hughes Road, Elburn.

The cost is $5 a person.

Children age 4 and younger are free.

The proceeds will support the two families, said Kelly McCullough, a firefighter paramedic.

Raffle prizes include 20 baskets of assorted items, plus larger items, such as grills and gift cards, she said.

“We are hoping to raise $10,000, with $5,000 for each family,” McCullough said.

Firefighter Dennis Argyrakis’ son Daniel was born 3½ weeks early on Feb. 4 and suffers from multiple endocrine neoplasia 2B. It is a rare hereditary cancer syndrome associated with thyroid cancer, which was the case with Daniel.

At 5 weeks old, the baby’s thyroid was removed. Although doctors believe they got all the cancer, he will have to go through regular testing and still faces more surgeries as he also has problems with his digestive system.

Noise complaints were the second most common type of call DeKalb police received last year, right behind calls for suspicious activity. Officers can use their discretion in deciding whether to issue a $100 noise violation ticket, but more serious matters can lead to more serious fines.

“If your neighbor is having a party at 3 a.m., you have an infant, and they’ve had problems before but we’ve never been there, we’d issue a citation,” DeKalb police Cmdr. John Petragallo said.

“But in general, if we haven’t dealt with them before, we’d issue a warning, [unless the neighbor insists on signing a complaint.]”

If noise coming from a property can be heard at a volume greater than 55 decibels at the property line between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., then it’s too loud under the law. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., the limit is 60 decibels.

gal activity is taking place and cite or charge the those involved accordingly. When a loud noise complaint occurs off-campus, DeKalb officers sometimes accompany NIU officers as part of a co-policing effort, Rodman said.

NIU police officers spoke with students living on campus recently during residential hall floor meetings to advise them of how police handle loud noise calls and how to avoid getting into those situations, Rodman said.

Overall, authorities said each noise complaint is handled on a case-by-case basis.

If police choose to cite someone for keeping a disorderly house, it leads to a larger fine of $300.

Disorderly house citations can be given if someone is using illegal drugs and a neighbor is disturbed by the odor, Petragallo said.

“For noise, the best advice is to be respectful to your neighbors,” Petragallo said.

Noise complaints have decreased slightly for DeKalb police, but Northern Illinois University officers have seen an uptick.

Last year, DeKalb police responded to 1,371 calls for noise complaints, compared with 1,414 in 2012 and 1,427 in 2011, according to DeKalb Police Department’s 2013 annual report. At NIU, police were called to loud noise complaints 70 times in 2013, 61 in 2012 and 57 in 2011, NIU Police Cmdr. Don Rodman said.

Police officers usually receive noise complaints from neighbors and spend anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour at the scene, depending on how large the party is, Petragallo said. If it’s their first time there, they ask the homeowner to turn down the noise.

If a citation is written, the city’s Crime Free Housing Bureau is notified. The bureau then notifies the prop-

erty owner if the loud noise was at a rental property.

Noise complaints are handled differently at NIU. As soon as officers are called to a loud noise complaint at a residence hall, they immediately call the community adviser and hall director to accompany them, Rodman said. If there is no illegal activity taking place, such as underage drinking or marijuana use, then students are normally referred to the student conduct office that handles possible punishments, he said.

Turner also noted that projects such as the Jones Law office building move cost the city money. The aldermen this past spring approved using money from the city’s reserves to move the historic office about one mile south, from 304 Cedar Ave. to Langum Park.

The project, which was completed Aug. 27, carried an estimated price tag of $73,000, Public Works Director Peter Suhr said.

Turner said the city cannot afford to have the projected deficit increase by six figures over the next three quarters the way it did during the first quarter of the city’s fiscal year.

“For some reasons, some of these organizations think we’re made of money … we’re not,” Turner said during Tuesday’s presentation.

Groups that think they have worthwhile projects should go out and raise the money themselves, he said.

Minick said the executive summaries of projects presented to aldermen already indicate whether the items are budgeted. He said he will bring more detailed information to them in the future.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles alderman wants to curb the city’s budget deficit before it grows out of hand.

Third Ward Alderman Bill Turner on Tuesday asked Chris Minick, the city’s finance director, to detail how any future requests for city funding that will come before the St. Charles City Council might affect the city’s overall budget and its deficit. Turner made the request during Minick’s presentation to the city’s Government Operations committee, which includes Turner and the other nine St. Charles aldermen.

Turner said he thought the deficit was under control, but then he saw the city’s projected deficit of its General Fund increase 34.1 percent to $1.23 million. This is an increase of more than $300,000 from the projected deficit of $918,235 when the budget was approved in April, according to Minick’s report.

Minick said about $200,000 of the deficit increase is for increased prices for road rock salt compared to previous years. Minick in August told the City Council the city was left with little choice on its

This is what your brain might look like on telepathy

By NOAH SMITH Bloomberg News Big news in the world of science and technology: Scientists just invented a form of telepathy. Actually, it’s a form of noninvasive electronic brain-to-brain communication. The transmission side is pretty simple – a device just reads your brain waves and knows when you think of a certain word. Then it transmits a signal to another device, which stimulates a part of the receiver’s brain with a binary signal. The receiver then translates that signal into a word, much as one would interpret Morse code.

Now, a telepathic Yo app might not sound that impressive, but to dismiss the

technology because it’s in the early stages would be to ignore all the lessons of history. Telepathic technology – by which I mean brain-to-computer and computer-to-brain interfaces, and communication between the two – will get better. At some point within our lifetimes, it will probably get good enough to have interesting applications.

The first uses for this sort of telepathy will be Yo-style notifications and simple alerts. Direct-to-brain notifications are more convenient than having to pull out your cellphone. The real breakthroughs, however, will come as the computer-to-brain interfaces improve.

Once we know how to make people think of words,

all kinds of communication will become easier and more private. You’ll be able to send irreverent messages during meetings, or check sports news while you work out.

Another big advance is emotions. Currently, brain-computer interfaces can detect emotions. Some technologies, such as deep brain stimulation, can induce emotions directly into the brain. It’s only a matter of time before input is connected with output. This would be a form of telepathic empathy – a technology that lets you feel some piece of what another person is feeling.

That could be useful in all sorts of communications. It’s always a useful thing to know how people are reacting to

what you’re saying and doing.

It also could be very useful in various kinds of human relationships, or in psychotherapy. In fact, the consumption value of being able to share emotions with other people directly might be astronomical. With telepathic empathy, we will simply be less lonely beings. That will represent an epochal shift in the nature of human life.

The developing technology will pose all sorts of troubling and complex ethical challenges. It should go without saying that people have the right to be alone with their thoughts at any and all times, but this will need to be codified into law.

Having other people inside your head is a scary prospect, since one’s own mind is the

ultimate refuge. And yes, governments will be able to use this technology to do horrible things. In particular, police interrogations will become more intrusive unless we enact laws to prevent it. And totalitarian governments will be able to use telepathy for the purpose of mind control, much as a human can mentally control a rat’s tail with existing technology.

Prepare yourself, humanity. The cyborg age is coming, and telepathy is going to be a big part of it.

It’s not that the North Stars were greedy about widening the gap in a season-opening, 13-2 victory against Elk Grove.

They simply know they can be better, and strive to make that an ongoing goal throughout the fall.

Taryn Dal Degan, St. Charles North volleyball player North led, 12-9, in Game 1 when Dal Degan toed the line, and by the time her streak was complete, the North Stars held an insurmountable 21-9 advantage.

“It’s always really fun to get on a big run,” Dal Degan said. “And that’s when I start getting more aggressive is when I get a lot under my belt.”

In addition to her serving prowess, Dal Degan supplied a team-high 14 assists. Jaclyn Taylor (nine assists, eight kills) and Division-I bound

outside hitters Daley Krage and Claire Anderson (six kills apiece) also were key components for North.

North (8-1) is unblemished except for a loss to Downers Grove South at last weekend’s Plainfield North Invitational.

“It was a wakeup call for us because we were expecting to win that tournament again, and it made us realize we’re not going to be given anything,” Krage said. “We have to really work hard each time.

We were kind of just expecting wins, like ‘Oh, we can just do

whatever,’ but it really taught us that we have to push for it.”

While North is nine matches into the season, the Redhawks (1-1) were playing only their second match and their first using a 6-2 alignment.

“Early on, you’ve got to see what’s going to work,” Naperville Central coach Jeff Danbom said. “It was a good opportunity to see how it’s going to function. We saw some good things at moments, but it wasn’t sustained.”

The North Stars wore gold socks, and Hawkins incorporated gold into her ensemble as the program sought to raise awareness for Pediatric Cancer Month and raise money for the Cal’s Angels foundation.

“I had to go out and buy a new outfit,” Hawkins said.

ST. CHARLES – Taryn Dal Degan took an offseason challenge to heart.

North girls volleyball coach Lindsey Hawkins asked the senior setter to make significant strides with her serve, and Thursday’s 25-12, 26-16 North win against Naperville Central provided the latest evidence that Dal Degan nailed that objective.

Dal Degan had 14 service points on the night, including nine straight in Game 1, as the North Stars dominated the nonconference match.

“She last year was kind of a weak server, and we told her from the very beginning of this summer that was something she needed to work on in order for this team to be

successful,” Hawkins said.

“And she actually changed her serve, worked with [assistant coach Stephanie Gianacakos] a bunch in July, and since then Taryn has just never looked back, and it’s been super aggressive and super consistent.”

Dal Degan said deep float serves are especially effective for her, with some shorter ones mixed in to keep opponents honest.

“Hawkins really wants us to be aggressive,” Dal Degan said. “She’s been pushing that a lot, last season and this season, to really go on the line and be aggressive and try to take the other team out of system. That’s our main goal, and my team really helped me on that line. There are a lot of points we could have lost but my team kept it up.”

On his way to attempting to seize sole possession of that honor, Olt homered in his first two Class-A games.

“Well, there you go,” Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson grinned. “That’s why he’s here. He wants to get a taste of the Midwest League.”

In reality, the parent Cubs sent Olt on a rehab assignment as he recovers from a strained quad, a move that simultaneously generated plenty of buzz as he joined the heart of the Cougars’ order to start their first-round playoff series against the Timber Rattlers.

Ron Krause of Wausau, Wis., took his seat in section 111 before Thursday’s game sporting quite the novelty item.

For the record, he used an old pennant as the design mold for a self-made Wausau Timbers T-shirt, a nod to the club that moved south to become the Cougars before the 1991 season.

Traveling with his girlfriend, Carole, Krause pumped his fist that the team was playing a 72nd home game.

“This was our first chance to come down this year,” he said. “If it hadn’t been for the playoffs, we wouldn’t have made it.”

Krause has attended at least one game at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in almost year since the relocation.

A retired former phone company worker in Wausau, he indicated no hard feelings on the part of fellow residents nearly 25 years after the move.

“They were going to lose the team anyway because the stadium just didn’t meet up to standards,” Krause said. “This worked out best for everybody, I guess.”

Scout who dedicates Eagle project to friend to be honored

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Charlie Vyskocil, 15, of Geneva will be honored at an Eagle Scout ceremony Sunday, Sept. 7, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles.

Vyskocil attends Geneva High School and is the son of John and Penny Vyskocil.

He is a Scout in Scout Master Mike Nelson’s Troop 13.

Vyskocil’s Eagle Scout project was dedicated to the memory of his Cub Scout friend, Gus Berry, states a release.

His project benefited the city of Eureka, Missouri, and the Berry Family. Berry and Vyskocil were Cub Scouts together in Pack 883 at Blevins Elementary in Eureka, the release states. In March 2010, Berry died from a congenital heart defect, states the release.

Vyskocil enlisted the time and skills of the Boy Scouts in Troop 13 to construct two benches. Vyskocil sold one of the benches to raise funds to cover the expenses related to the project. The second bench was transported to Eureka where it was installed at a city park in town.

Former Cub Scouts from Pack 883 and family friends spent a Saturday working with Charlie to install the bench, a marker and plant a tree in memory of Berry.

Vyskocil has earned 30 merit badges, is an active member of the Order of the Arrow and is a member of the ceremonial team.

24 Museum’s Herrington cabin lecture set KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva History Museum will present “Recalling the 1992 Herrington Cabin Excavation” at noon Tuesday, Sept. 9, as part of the museum’s Brown Bag Lunch Program.

The Geneva History Museum Brown Bag Lunch Program takes place at noon on the second Tuesday of each month and runs September through May. As part of the event, Midwest Archaeological Research Services will uncover what it found in 1992 when it was hired by the city of Geneva to dig at the site of the 1830s log cabin owned by James and Charity Herrington – Geneva’s founding family.

According to a news release, the Herrington cabin marks the genesis of the community at the “Big Spring” along the Fox River.

Attempts to relocate the remains of the

founding occupation drew a considerable amount of attention and interest from the public, and the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission organized field and laboratory volunteers to assist with the archaeological investigations at the Herrington site, states the release.

The artifacts were donated to the Geneva History Museum and some are on display in the Museum’s Main Gallery – “Geneva’s Story.”

Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch.

Soup will be provided by Inglenook Pantry and the museum will offer cookies, water, tea and coffee.

The event will take place at the museum, 113 S. Third St., Geneva.

Admission costs $5 a person or $3 for museum members.

Jeep has combined function and comfort in the five-passenger, four-door, compact sport utility Cherokee.

At the same time, Jeep has not forgotten looks. The Cherokee looks tough and handsome inside and out.

One design feature deserves mention. There is a crease in Jeep’s iconic seven-section waterfall grille. The crease continues along the sides, interrupted only by bending up and over front and rear fenders, then picking up the theme across the rear liftgate.

There are sufficient amenities to keep most people happy, including keyless entry, cruise, power windows (driver express up and down), door locks and exterior mirrors. At the same time, this compact sport utility vehicle has the storage space to keep most buyers satisfied. Besides the 54.9 cubic feet of carpeted storage space after the split rear seat is folded, the front passenger seat also folds flat.

This allows for that longer ladder, for example, to get stored inside the 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

This vehicle comes in four flavors, Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk and Limited. Prices for four-wheel-drive models are $24,995, $26,495, $29,495 and $29,995. If front-wheel-drive, prices are $2,000 less. Prices on the 2015 models are virtually the same.

All share a 2.4-liter, 184-horsepower inline four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Except for the Sport, a 3.2-liter, 271-horsepower V6 engine is optional. The models can be two- or four-wheel-drive except for the Trailhawk, which is strictly 4WD. Both engines have been tested, most recently the 3.2-liter in a 2014 $27,990 Latitude model with 4WD. Six months ago the Sport’s 2.4-liter with 4WD was reviewed in this newspaper. The 2.4-liter averaged 23.1 miles per gallon of regular gasoline in January. In a recent test week, the

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper 3.2-liter averaged 23.6 mpg. Go figure. Of course the smaller engine was driven in harsh winter weather and the heater was blasting away full-time, and maybe it worked harder in the snow. But then the 3.2 liter had heavy use of air conditioning to detract from its mileage figures.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 4,044-pound, 4WD Latitude at 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

The Sport is basic with 17-inch steel wheels. The Latitude exchanges the steel for alloy wheels and adds, among other features, roof rails, fog lights, body color door handles and mirrors and tinted glass.

The Trailhawk is a real off-roader with undercarriage skid plate protection of vital engine and transmission parts, tow hooks and a locking rear differential. It adds sport-

ier exterior trim, satellite radio and an 8.4-inch color touchscreen.

The Limited foregoes the off-roading equipment, or most of it, and concentrates on pleasures such as keyless pushbutton ignition, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, cargo cover, rearview camera and dual zone climate control. Wheels are 18-inch (alloy) and not 17 inchers.

The Latitude is a comfortable, zippy, capable, practical vehicle with some but not all of the desirable power features. Seats, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and liftgate are manual. The power liftgate is one of a dozen items in a $1,995 option package.

That package also includes remote start, power driver’s seat, rear backup camera, keyless ignition, dual zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, automatic headlamps, satellite radio, garage door opener and a rear cargo cover and net.

Jeep Cherokees are like the iconic Wrangler in that they are equipped for off-roading.

It can be modest off-roading or

more serious off-roading and that is where the Trailhawk comes in. But, even the tested Latitude came equipped with the electronics to change the gear ratios depending on terrain. The range of gearing covered sand, mud, snow and climbing a hill. The Latitude was taken on mild off-roading ventures and can climb steep inclines fairly well. Ground clearance of 8.2 inches was appreciated when encountering deep ruts and good-sized rocks.

The Latitude’s 225 tires are wide and they are mounted on 17-inch painted aluminum wheels.

Exterior highlights of the Latitude include halogen projector headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and LED tail lamps.

Major interior features include the power windows (express driver), door locks and exterior mirrors. There is a 12-volt outlet in the lighted and carpeted cargo area and another in front. Cupholders are lighted and that is nice at night. The sound system includes AM-FM radio, five-inch

touch-screen, voice command with Bluetooth, USB port in front center console bin, audio jack input for mobile devices, vanity mirrors on front visors, cruise control, intermittent wipers and air conditioning,.

Safety features include airbags not only in front and overhead for the two seating rows, but also on the sides of front and rear rows. Also, there are two knee bags.

Other safety elements include keyless remote entry, traction and stability controls, trailer sway damping, tire pressure monitoring system, seatbelts and headrests for five, child-safety door locks, rear child-seat tethers and anchors and sensors that detect a rollover so vehicle mechanicals can respond accordingly (cut power, tighten seatbelt tensioners, for example).

This vehicle has hill start assist, which means the driver does not have to play with the brake when stopped in traffic on an incline.

Taste of Travel: The beauty of Mirbeau

By CHARLENE PETERS More Content Now Like a mad scientist, Executive Chef Stephen Coe and his team gather in the kitchen tailored for immaculate presentations of molecular gastronomy. Plates are served with the utmost flavor-forward and creative recipes in mind to guests who dine in the spectacularly designed restaurant, Henri-Marie, inside the newly built French manor in The Pinehills development of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Mirbeau Resort & Spa. The spa culture’s bar has just been lifted with the opening of the 14,000 squarefoot Spa Mirbeau, with a replica of Plymouth Rock inside the oversized transition room. Surrounding the rock is a pool of water that awaits complimentary foot soaks before a treatment.

Upon entering, the sensation of royalty and calmness surrounds. Each treatment room has a gas fireplace for ambiance, but the heat is an option. There is no choice but to surrender to the capable hands of your massage therapist.

Architecturally, Mirbeau Inn is fashioned after a French Manor, with interior design of French country and toile-patterned drapes and bedding. The guest rooms have claw foot tubs, as well as walkouts to verandas overlooking the gardens.

Every inch of Mirbeau’s grounds was built with the intention to be viewed. Just outside of Mirbeau is The Pinehills golf course and walking paths, so there’s activity for everyone. But if you want to stay inside, the state-of-the-art fitness room and exercise room welcomes you.

The exquisiteness of Mirbeau Inn & Spa astounds me, and I feel the Francophile in me churning as I roam from the Bistro to Henri-Marie to be seated for a movie-themed seven-course dinner.

The newly opened Henri-Marie restaurant of Mirbeau Inn & Spa is located in The Pinehills community of Plymouth, Massachusetts. more than seven courses, beginning with an amuse bouche of one French macaroon that isn’t just a macaroon. This small, buttery yellow treat is packed with molecular gastronomical genius.

The instruction is to let it sit on your tongue, hitting your palate for a while before slowly breaking it up.

The sensation is that you’ve just eaten a large handful of buttered popcorn, and now you’re ready for the movie, thanks to Pastry Chef Patrick Ford.

Before your first course is served, however, you’ll receive a petit popover with honeycomb butter made by bees owned by the chef. The stage is set, and the experience is culinary theater.

The first course is “Forrest Gump” peas and carrots, to which I eat some of the molecular-structured carrots, but hand over the pod of peas to my husband, since some things never change from my childhood dislikes.

Next is “James and the Giant Peach” of scallop ceviche pieces in a peach consume with panna cotta made so perfectly I find myself slowing down to enjoy each smooth scoop.

And then, “American Pie” deconstructed with cheddar ice cream of the slightest cheese flavor, a scoop of green apple pie filling and a dehydrated slab of speck prosciutto in a presentation worthy of being served to royalty. And it’s delicious.

The next film, er … course is “A Fish Called Wanda” of seared tuna, edible sand, avocado mousse, tobiko (fish roe) with black vinaigrette.

It took a while for us to figure out the little black balls were squid in tapioca.

The next course proved the most filling: “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” Local spaghetti squash under a large, dense meatball soaking in tomato broth and topped with Parmesan foam.

But the next plate was a show all on its own. “Pineap-

ple Express” was served by Coe and Ford so they could have fun lifting off the lid to a smoky welcome pineapple intermezzo.

And finally, “I Am The Cheese” was a showcase of Chef Coe’s (who also had a stint at Thomas Keller’s French Laundry) honey and seasonal house made jams with cheeses, and the final plate of Augustus Gloop (“Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”) is a menagerie of truffle, nibs, chocolate milk and more decadence.

Breakfast overlooking the gardens next morning keeps the French theme going with duck confit and sweet potato hash served on a crispy local egg, and croque Madame with a cup of cappuccino.

So, although I know I’m at Plymouth, there is no indication that I’m dining like a pilgrim, except that I am eating from local sources.

And the mad scientists/ molecular gastronomers shake up a menu like no other.

Alternative treatments for hot flashes available Dear Doctor K: I have terrible hot flashes. My doctor no longer recommends hormone replacement therapy because he says it has heart risks. Is there anything else I can take?

Dear Reader: Hot flashes are a common symptom of menopause.

They probably result from changing hormone levels. My patients describe them as a sudden, intensely uncomfortable onslaught of heat. They are often accompanied by a rapid heartbeat, headache, nausea or dizziness.

For years, women took hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to ease hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause.

Indeed, many women continued to take HRT after the hot flashes had gone in order to achieve improved heart health. Then, studies showed that long-term use of HRT in women older than their late 50s (or more than 10 years out from menopause) actually increased the risk of heart disease.

That study (published in 2002) led many doctors to stop prescribing HRT short-term – even just to relieve hot flashes. In my judgment, that was a mistake. In fact, I prescribe HRT in women experiencing hot flashes, except in unusual situations. I have discussed the reasons in a previous column: The 2002 study primarily

However, you asked about treatments for hot flashes other than HRT. One effective alternative may be antidepressant drugs. That is not because hot flashes are caused by depression.

The antidepressant drugs change brain chemistry, and the changes they cause also seem to reduce hot flashes.

Escitalopram (Lexapro), for example, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. It reduces the frequency, severity and discomfort of hot flashes, compared to a placebo (dummy pill).

Researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital looked at the antidepressant duloxetine (Cymbalta). This is a different type of antidepressant. Depressed women treated with duloxetine found that their menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, improved.

An antiseizure drug, gabapentin (Neurontin), may also reduce hot flashes.

Several over-the-counter herb-

al remedies also claim to prevent or treat hot flashes. Black cohosh is one example. But many of these herbal treatments have not been well studied.

In the last couple of years, women’s health experts have started to rethink the role of HRT. They still discourage it as a long-term treatment. But they are starting to reconsider it for shortterm use, to relieve temporary symptoms (including hot flashes) that do not respond to other therapies.

Finally, don’t forget to try simple, non-drug strategies. They can cool you down without any side effects: • Turn the thermostat down.

• Keep bedding light.

• Dress in layers, so you can adjust your clothing when a hot flash comes on.

• Limit caffeine, which can worsen hot flashes.

• Carry a small, clip-on fan with you.

I would recommend that you try these non-pharmaceutical remedies first, and go on to pharmaceuticals only if they don’t give you sufficient relief.

Dr. Paul Sieving at the University of Michigan Medical Center says that while darker sunglasses are best for reducing the brightness of the sun, they will also cause pupils to dilate or enlarge, which permits more ultraviolet rays to enter the eye. Dark glasses should always be equipped with an ultraviolet-blocking filter coating. Untreated lenses let in more harmful rays, which can lead to cataracts and a form of blindness called macular degeneration.

South was right to upgrade his hand, counting it as worth 18 points. He had an excellent five-card suit, three aces and one king. After North responded one spade, East should have made a takeout double. The two-club overcall was bizarre.

Then South rebid two no-trump, showing 18 or 19 (or a poor 20) points. That was a reasonable choice. (However, if North-South had been using support doubles, South should have doubled to show three spades. Then North would have rebid two diamonds, and South could have continued with two no-trump.) North’s raise to game was optimistic.

South started with eight top tricks: one spade, five diamonds and two clubs. He had to gain a second spade trick. So he took the first trick with dummy’s king and led the spade jack.

When East covered with the queen, South won with his ace and played another spade, happy to see the eight and nine from West.

East took this trick and returned ... the club queen. He should, of course, have first cashed the heart king (lead king from ace-king and from kingqueen after trick one) to get a signal from partner.
