Bomb scare prompts shutdowns Authorities evacuate three courthouses, including Kane County Judicial Center

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County Sheriff ’s Office continued Wednesday afternoon to investigate bomb threats that prompted evacuations at three courthouses, including the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township.

“No arrests have been made, but we are following up on a few leads,” Lt. Pat Gengler, a spokesperson for the sheriff ’s office, said in a written statement.

Authorities evacuated the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38, in St. Charles Township. There also were evacuations at the Kane County Branch Court at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles and the Elgin Branch Court in Elgin after two threatening phone calls were received.

Gengler said other court buildings in the county were checked as well.

The buildings were reopened after no suspicious items were found, police said.

Sheriff Pat Perez said the calls came in at about 9:40 a.m.

A voice mail was left at the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office, which shares a building with the Kane County Branch Court, he said.

The message was “a lot of people in Kane County are going to die today,” Perez said.

QuadComm – a dispatcher for Dundee, Carpentersville and Algonquin – relayed a second call to KaneComm, Perez said. That caller said four bombs were planted at the courthouse, Perez said, noting officials took that to mean the Kane County Judicial Center.

Authorities identified a person of interest for each of the calls, Perez said Wednesday morning. Because of the ongoing investigation, the sheriff ’s office did not release any additional details about the incident Wednesday afternoon.

Geneva shopping center gets new owner

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Commons shopping center in Geneva has a new owner.

LaSalle Investment Management, the investment unit of Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., recently bought the 438,000-square-foot shopping center at 602 Commons Drive in Geneva. Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns confirmed the purchase Wednesday.

The previous owners of the shopping center, two limited partnerships advised by Invesco Ltd., defaulted on a $76 million loan when it matured in May, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. The mall opened in 2002.

Burns said the change in ownership will not hurt the mall’s commercial standing.

“The folks at LaSalle obviously saw it as a good investment,” Burns said. “We still believe it is a sound investment as well.”

Burns said he spoke about the pending sale during his “State of Geneva” address at the Geneva Women In Business luncheon Aug. 20.

He doesn’t forsee any changes at Geneva Commons because of the change in ownership. Barnes & Noble, Crate And Barrel and Williams-Sonoma are among the stores in the upscale outdoor shopping center.

“The management still remains the same,” Burns said.

Geneva Commons property manager Cathy Charhut could not be reached for comment.

Burns said the Randall Road commercial corridor remains a strong commercial force.

“Geneva Commons is a regional destination,” he said.

8LOCAL BRIEFS A.B.A.T.E. planning 27th anniversary toy, food run The DuKane Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois has planned its 27th anniversary toy and food run Oct. 13 at the Batavia Overseas Post VFW at 645 S. River St., Batavia.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the VFW or 9:30 a.m. at Knuckleheads Tavern, 108 E. North St., Elburn.

This yearly event collects unwrapped new toys and nonperishable food for the DuPage/Kane/DeKalb County area food banks, shelters, foster homes and social service agencies.

At 11:30 a.m. participants will line up at Knuckleheads for a ride to Batavia.

Santa Claus will lead the parade.

DuPage/Kane/DeKalb County congressmen, senators and district representatives who support A.B.A.T.E. will speak at the event. Participants are urged to bring an unwrapped, new toy and nonperishable food item.

The cost is $10 a person.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City and Batavia Enterprises officials believe that progress is being made in moving the Walgreens project forward following a meeting last week between city and company officials.

“We were able to come to common ground,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said. “I remain optimistic we can meet the Dec. 1 deadline.”

Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey said the Batavia City Council would have to approve the project by December.

He said construction of the new store must begin by March to deliver the building to Walgreens corporate leaders by the end of September 2014.

Dempsey also was optimistic that the project, which has been in the planning stages since 2010, is moving forward.

“All parties agreed this should not be delayed any more,” Dempsey said. “We are

ready to move forward to the next level.”

The plans are set to go before the Batavia Plan Commission on Sept. 18 for design review.

The project is in a tax increment financing district. Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

Dempsey said the TIF funding is needed because of problems with the site.

Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which could cost $275,000, Dempsey said.

In addition, a large storm drain line that runs through the city-owned portion of the property.

The line acts as an overflow route from the southern tip of Depot Pond to a point in the Fox River just north of the city of Batavia’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency garage.

Dempsey said if the line has to be moved, it would cost about $250,000.

He estimated the overall project cost at between $5.5 million and $6 million, including $3 million to build the store.

“We are not asking for anything more than the project generates,” he said.

The city’s TIF consultant still is determining the amount of revenues the project will generate, Dempsey said. Batavia Enterprises believes it is eligible for up to $2 million in TIF funds, he said.

Walgreens project moves forward

CAMPTON HILLS – A Campton Hills man accused of mistreating four horses agreed in court last month to turn the animals over to the Hooved Animal Humane Society.

Javier Martinez, 45, of the 8N500 block of Corron Road, Campton Hills, was charged in January with failure to provide humane care and treatment to the horses, a criminal misdemeanor.

The complaint, filed Jan. 30, alleged he failed to provide clean stalls at his barn on Corron Road. Additionally, the document indicated he failed to clean mud and burrs off the horses and didn’t provide a sufficient quantity of good, quality

food and water to the animals.

Martinez pleaded guilty last month, according to documents filed Aug. 14.

In lieu of a fine, he agreed to forfeit the horses to the Hooved Animal Humane Society, who will take the animals to its farm and put them up for adoption, according to a Campton Hills police report.

The police report noted that Martinez cannot own horses for one year.

According to its website, the Hooved Animal Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of hooved animals through education, legislation, investigation and if necessary, intervention.

It was founded in 1971.

Board narrows finalists for RTA, Metra boards

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said Wednesday that finalists seeking positions on the Kane County Metra and the Regional Transportation Authority boards should be narrowed down by today so interviews can start as early as Friday.

Four board members – Brian Pollock, T.R. Smith, Drew Frasz and Deborah Allan – are tasked with reviewing the 21 applicants for the RTA position and the 20 who applied for the Metra position. Lauzen asked them to submit their top three or four finalists by noon today.

That means interviews can be conducted Friday, part of the weekend and Monday, as the next County Board meeting is scheduled Tuesday.

Lauzen said three of the board members who are helping narrow the list of candidates were heavily involved with filling a another recent vacancy on the RTA board.

Nabi Fakroddin, who was appointed in April, resigned his position on the Regional Transportation Authority board in early August, after concerns that he could not legally serve there and on the Illinois Human Rights Commission.

former Kane County Board Chairman Mike McCoy resigned from his seat on the commuter rail agency panel amid the fallout from the scandal surrounding the departure of former Metra CEO Alex Clifford.

Lauzen said the fourth County Board member, Allan, was chosen because she wrote him a “very comprehensive” letter about what she’s looking for in the new appointees. She said she hopes to find candidates who “don’t just buy the package” and would feel confident standing up before the board. She said an engineering background or prosecutorial skills wouldn’t hurt, either.

“I was hoping that we would pick somebody who has the time to do the work and is not just in it for the honor and glory,” she said.

Lauzen said the selection process is a bipartisan effort that will “take the politics out of transit management.”

Roger was employed at Stevenson Paper Co. He previously worked for Batavia Bowl for over a quarter century and was well known in the community for his hard work and helping others. Roger loved his sports, especially the Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks. He often tried to rule the remote and what was on each TV. He will be dearly missed by many friends and mostly his dad who he helped care for. Roger was a Booster Member of the Batavia VFW and the Batavia Moose.

‘It’s an art form’

Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald had the profound duty of being writers – arguably some of America’s finest. Fast forward to the 21st Century, and their transcendent tales have stood the test of time, inspiring the storytellers of today to abandon all else for the sake of the written word.

One such writer is William Hazelgrove, a bestselling author and St. Charles resident, who decided to follow in the footsteps of his favorite literary icons (Hemingway and Fitzgerald) when he ditched his corporate job in the city for the often unstable, unreliable and cutthroat profession of a full-time writer.

“You don’t choose to be a writer, it’s just who you are and the question is can you accept that?” Hazelgrove said, adding that he’s held down every imaginable job from being a janitor to working in a bakery in order to feed his need to write. “Talent has to

He also spent nine years as the writer in residence at Hemingway’s Oak Park

home, where he “penned” the story for “Mica Highways” while cooped up in the “dusty, dirty” attic of one of his literary idols. From the attic, he also created the blog “The View from Hemingway’s Attic,” which he still writes for on a near-daily basis.

Hazelgrove’s latest novel, “The Pitcher,” was released Sept. 1 donning a golden, embossed seal labeled by the Junior Library Guild as a select young-adult novel for the fall.

The idea for the story was birthed after a run-in with an ex-professional baseball player he met in Florida.

Hazelgrove and his son were playing catch in the street when a “big guy walked out with a cigarette” to watch Hazelgrove’s son throw some pitches.

“He watched my son pitch for a while and gave him pointers and philosophy on life stuff and then went back in his garage ...” Hazelgrove said. “That’s when the lightbulb went off.”

“The Pitcher” tells the story of a poor Mexican-American boy who encounters a broken down World Series pitcher grappling with the death of his wife. In the midst of the impending deportation of the boy’s mother, the unlikely pair team up to help bring the boy’s baseball dream to fruition.

“F. Scott Fitzgerald said that every novel is a moral, and I think that’s true,” Hazelgrove said, adding that he lives by the advice of his favorite author when crafting the stories and characters for his book, and that “The Pitcher” was no different. “’The Pitcher’ pivots around a dream and what this boy’s mother will do to make sure he has his dream,” Hazelgrove said. “It also explores the immigration issue – how the system is rigged – and how the odds are stacked against [the boy] before he even has a chance.”

Fermilab builds camera

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermilab scientist Josh Frieman hopes that the world’s most powerful digital camera – which was built at Fermilab – will provide some answers as to why the expansion of the universe is speeding up instead of slowing down because of gravity.

“We don’t have a physical explanation,” said Frieman, who also is a professor at the University of Chicago. “Using the Dark Energy Camera, we hope it will help us answer the nature of Dark Energy or whatever is causing the expansion of the universe.”

Scientists last month began using the camera to begin a five-year mission to map the southern sky in unprecedented detail. Frieman is director of the Dark Energy Survey.

The Dark Energy Camera is a 570-megapixel digital camera built at Fermilab and mounted on the 4-meter Victor M. Blanco telescope at the National Science Foundation’s Cerro Tololo

Inter-American Observatory in the Andes Mountains in Chile. The camera includes five precisely shaped lenses, the largest nearly a yard across, that together provide sharp images over its entire field of view.

“We’ve been testing it out for the last year,” Frieman said. “It’s been working well.”

The camera will be able to see light from more than 100,000 galaxies up to 8 billion light-years away in each snapshot.

“It will produce the biggest map of the universe to date,” Frieman said. “We will also gain an understanding of how galaxies form.”

Police: Driver who struck teen will not be cited

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The driver who struck a teenager who was crossing a street in Batavia last week will not be cited, police said.

Batavia police Detective Kevin Bretz said police still were reviewing the case in the days after the accident,

which occurred during the afternoon Aug. 28 on Fabyan Parkway near Allen Drive in Batavia.

Bretz has said the pedestrian, a 15-year-old boy, was struck by a 2008 Ford Escape driven by George Shutack of Wayne while the teen was heading south across Fabyan Parkway.

The boy still was being treated there as of Aug. 29, but hospital spokesman Chris King said Wednesday the boy no longer was at the hospital.

Bretz has said that Shutack, 56, was driving east on Fabyan Parkway and was approaching Allen Drive in the outside lane closest to the curb.

According to reports,

the teen was heading south across Fabyan Parkway near Allen Drive and was struck by Shutack’s vehicle in the outside lane.

The speed limit in that area is 40 mph.

• Theo Alexis Deming-Grant, 30, of the 300 block of Ash Avenue, Wood Dale, was arrested Saturday, Aug. 31, on a Cook County warrant.

• A St. Charles resident reported Tuesday, Aug. 27, she was the victim of credit card fraud. Someone reportedly used her card to order two pairs of running shoes totaling $191.92.

Cleared of wrongdoing, priest now works in STC Rockford bishop: Accusations in Dixon parish probe were ‘baseless’

By DAVID GIULIANI dgiuliani@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A former Dixon priest has returned to the ministry after law enforcement authorities cleared him of wrongdoing in a computer usage investigation, the area’s Catholic bishop said.

In March, the Diocese of Rockford relieved the Rev. John Gow of his duties at St. Patrick Parish in Dixon as a result of the investigation, Bishop David Malloy of Rockford said in a statement.

It was done as a precaution while Gow and the diocese cooperated with authorities, the bishop said.

Gow has now been assigned as associate pastor at St. John Neumann Parish in St. Charles. He started Sunday.

“Father Gow is returning to the full exercise of his priestly duties and deserves the total restoration of his good name and reputation,” Malloy said.

“The information that prompted the investigation was baseless.”

John Gow Malloy’s statement was read Sunday during weekend Masses at St. Patrick.

“I wish to thank the parish family of St. Patrick in Dixon for your support of Father Gow during these difficult months,” Malloy said. “In addition, I am grateful to Father Gow for his cooperation and patience during this time.”

Dixon Police Chief Danny Langloss said his department

conducted a full investigation of Gow. It was based on information that suggested Gow had downloaded child pornography on an electronic device, the chief said.

Officers executed a search warrant to look at all of Gow’s devices and found no child pornography, Langloss said.

The department got help from a computer forensics team from the attorney general’s office.

The diocese and Gow cooperated with the police, Langloss said.

In previous interviews, Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller said she couldn’t confirm or deny whether her office was investigating Gow. An online court record shows that the state’s attorney’s office was involved in a subpoena related to Gow earlier this summer, but no other details were available.

Gow was ordained in 2008.

Geneva man charged with DUI in crash in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A motorist who sideswiped a telephone pole and crashed to a stop against a light post in downtown St. Charles early Friday has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to St. Charles police reports.

Corey Robert Murtaugh, 25, of the 500 block of Woodward Avenue, Geneva, was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, improper lane use and a seat belt violation.

At about 1 a.m. Friday, Murtaugh’s Audi left the road in the 400 block of South Second Street where there is a

Continuing south out of control, the vehicle reportedly hit a retaining wall and scraped against it for some distance before veering back to the left.

The car came to a stop after hitting a light post, police reported. Police noted the Audi had severe damage, and its front passenger tire was lying in the middle of the 100 block of Prairie Street.

Witnesses told police Murtaugh ran from the scene through the backyards along the 400 block of South Second Street, police reported.

Police found Murtaugh, who was reportedly taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

During a search of his car, police found a marijuana pipe and a prescription bottle containing marijuana, police reported. Police noted the driver’s seat belt was in the locked position, indicating it had been that way at the time of the crash.

Murtaugh was released after posting bond on the DUI charge, police reported. He is expected in court at 1:30 p.m.

Former nature center slated for demolition

Man’s encounter with girls prompts police attention

“These buildings had been sitting vacant for some time,” Goreth said. “[The former nature center at] Tekakwitha was probably an area where the building was unoccupied for the shortest period of time.”

Goreth said razing old buildings not only improves the aesthetic of the forest preserve properties, but also improves safety. In the past, he said the forest preserve has partnered with fire departments who practice drills using the old buildings slated to be demolished.

“We try to do this on an annual basis,” Goreth said.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is seeking information on a man who whistled at two 11-year-old girls in St. Charles last week, according to a child incident bulletin issued by the department.

The girls were riding bicycles in the 2400 block of Fox Chase Boulevard just west of Dunham Road in St. Charles when, at about 10:30 a.m. Friday, a man reportedly drove by them on the other side of the landscaped median and whistled at them.

According to police, the girls continued to ride their bikes, and the man turned around and drove west toward the girls.

The girls got off their bikes and ran to a nearby

house, police reported.

“The girls acted appropriately and got a good description and then contacted an adult,” police spokesman Paul McCurtain said.

The man was described as white and heavyset, in his early 40s with a dark, full-growth goatee beard and mustache.

He was reportedly wearing a blue T-shirt.

He was driving a mid1990s red full-size crew cab pickup truck, either a Chevrolet or Ford, police reported, noting the truck bed had rust.

The girls did not get any registration information, police reported.

McCurtain said police would like to talk to the man to get a sense of his intentions.

ST. CHARLES – The former home of the nature center – now at LeRoy Oakes in St. Charles – is slated to be torn down, along with a slew of other old or unused forest preserve buildings, a county official said Wednesday.

John Goreth, director of operations for the Kane County Forest Preserve, said the building demolitions are part of a routine annual process, and the county budgeted about $250,000 for this year’s project.

The Creek Bend Nature Center had been housed at Tekakwitha Woods before it moved to LeRoy Oakes in the fall of 2012. That left the building vacant at Tekak-

witha Woods, Goreth said, and demolition of that building, along with another building at that site, are part of the final phase of the project.

A South Elgin resident, Mark Bohne, said he was surprised to see the building at Tekakwitha Woods being torn down because he said it had some historical significance.

“It’s just a unique building,” he said. “It has ties to the original previous use of that property. Kane County has effectively erased the history of that property.”

Along with two buildings at Tekakwitha Woods, Goreth said three buildings – a few older cabins and an old cinderblock restroom – were taken down at Brewster Creek Forest Preserve in St.

Equality of taxes THE WASHINGTON POST As of last Thursday, thousands of American families will now be able to claim crucial tax protections and benefits they were previously denied.

In what is arguably the federal government’s most significant rule change since the Supreme Court’s watershed June decision striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act – or DOMA – the Treasury Department and its Internal Revenue Service have mandated that all legally-married, same-sex couples be treated as such for the purposes of federal taxation. Although 37 states still don’t recognize gay marriage, the federal government has taken a powerful step in equalizing standards for same-sex couples, no matter what state they call home.

Gay couples legally married in states such as Maryland but living in states including Virginia will now be treated no differently than their straight neighbors: At the conclusion of the 2013 tax year, they will be required to file their federal tax returns in the same way that other married couples always have, either as “married filing separately” or “married filing jointly.” No longer must they file as if either spouse were single.

It’s heartening to see the federal government prioritize this issue and mobilize itself so quickly to implement the Supreme Court decision.

Equalizing federal tax standards wasn’t a sim-

ple fix, either, and it took far more than the stroke of a pen.

After months of deliberation, the IRS ultimately decided to adapt a 1958 ruling that dealt with a similar logistic problem, one involving common-law marriages. As with same-sex marriages, common-law marriages can be contracted in only some states, but many couples in those unions reside in states that don’t recognize them. In 1958, the solution was to base tax policies on where a couple was married, rather than where they live, and this is the same logic used in the decision the IRS announced last week – a same-sex couple’s “place of marriage,” rather than “place of domicile,” is now the relevant factor.

Of course, some significant headaches remain on the horizon for couples who live in one of the 37 so-called “non-recognition” states and for administrators in those states. It’s likely that gay couples in states such as Virginia still will have to file individual state tax returns. But given that federal taxable income is often used as the starting point for state taxation, non-recognition states will have to provide at least some sort of guidance for their citizens moving forward.

If they don’t, a regulatory nightmare is bound to follow.

In any case, the updated IRS standards are a welcome addition and an important step in the nuts-and-bolts implementation of equality.

Dimples Donuts bakes up fresh sweets

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – On an ordinary day at Dimples Donuts, bakers are churning out anywhere from 500 to 1,000 freshly made doughnuts to keep up with the daily demand.

Owner Nali Vong said the shop is known for a range of homemade doughnuts and pastries, such as its old-fashioned buttermilk doughnuts, its blueberry doughnuts and apple fritters. The apple fritters are so popular, in fact, that one company from Minnesota once asked Vong to ship some via express mail.

“And we did – we sent them apple fritters,” she said.

Dimples Donuts has been in Batavia for 21 years, Vong said.

She has owned the doughnut shop for the past three years, and her aunt and uncle owned the business before her. Vong’s siblings and a cousin still help out, she said. In February, Dimples Donuts opened a second location in Naperville that has a drive-thru window.

The shop carries 17 different types of doughnuts, as well as coffee drinks, smoothies, homemade muffins, brownies and breakfast sandwiches.

For the past two years in a row, including 2013, Dimples Donuts won the Kane County Chronicle’s Best of the Fox Reader’s Choice Award for best doughnut.

Everything is made on site by hand – even the croissants and the French crullers.

“It’s fresh every day,” Vong said.

The longtime establishment also has its share of regulars.

For example, one area church regularly orders 70 dozen doughnuts every Sunday.

ES: Is it going to be a weight off your shoulders when the album comes out? Is it great getting new music out to your fans?

JL: Yeah, absolutely. It’s really nice to be touring again

to support a record and have new songs to play.

ES: And Tommy Sims, who co-wrote Eric Clapton’s Grammy Award-winning song, “Change The World,” produced the album.

Why did you want to team up with him and what do you think you brought to the table?

JL: At first, I wanted to try to do it myself because I’ve never done that, but it’s

enced by blues guitar players, for sure, and you can hear that – I think – in my guitar playing still. But the songs don’t lend themselves to that genre really on this record so much.

But I think that will always be an element of the music.

ES: You’re 32 now. A lot of people probably remember you as that 16-year-old who released “Lie To Me.” Did you feel a lot of pressure back then because you were so young?

ES: And back in 1999, you played in front of then President Bill Clinton and his wife. What was that experience like?

JL: Oh, man. It was incredible. He was just a very gracious guy and super nice.

ES: With this new album, do you think you are taking blues in a new direction?

JL: I don’t think of it as that, really. I kind of look at that genre as something that I am so happy to have been a part of.

With any style of music or art, I guess you can kind of stretch the boundary of it.

But once it starts getting away from what it is too much, it stops being that.

Maybe someday I will do a record that is just straight-up blues again. This one was not necessarily trying to stretch the boundaries of what blues is or anything like that.

Batavia’s Albright Theatre celebrating 40 years

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Albright Theatre has much to celebrate as it gets ready to open its 40th season this weekend.

The nonprofit theater will unveil its newly created lobby as it presents its production of “Harvey,” starting Friday, Sept. 6, at its third-floor space in the Batavia Government Center at 100 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia.

“We are real excited to show it off for ‘Harvey,’” said Jennifer Ring, president of the Albright Theatre Board of Directors. “Before the lobby was put in, people could wander back stage. Having it creates a better experience.”

Albright Theatre has a rich history of presenting community theater. The theater’s first show, “Star Spangled Girl,”

opened to eight people in April 1974 in a former church in Warrenville.

The theater had been in the Batavia Government Center for several years in the late ’80s and early ’90s before moving to the Batavia Park District’s Eastside Community Center.

The theater returned to the Batavia Government Center in 2001.

Albright Theater now attracts an average of 50 to 60 people to its performances, but crowds have swelled to as many as 140 people for a single performance, Ring said. The theater has 80 permanent seats, but that can be expanded to accommodate larger crowds, she said.

People who come to the Albright Theatre this season also will notice other changes.

“We always want to offer our audience members options and make them feel at home,” Ring said. “It is just something else we can offer so people can make an evening of it. Our priority is first and foremost to

provide a good experience for audience members.”

Before Saturday’s performance of “Harvey,” there will be a gala starting at 7 p.m. at the Albright Theatre, including food, drinks, a display of the Albright Theatre’s history and a toast after the show.

office manager Jeannine Collins has been a part of that history.

“We wanted to bring creativity to the stage, so audiences would come and enjoy what we do,” Collins said. “I can’t believe it has been 40 years.

I’m so very proud of what The Albright has done. It’s grown beyond our expectations.”

Collins said Albright is dedicated to presenting quality theater to the community.

“Community theater groups do it because they love it,” she said. “They are not getting paid for it. People are invested in community theater.”

Photography classes get smart Creator Gallery delves into world of mobile photography, apps with new classes

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – As smartphone cameras continue to improve, they are seemingly becoming the most commonly used image-capturing device, further making photo taking, editing and sharing easier than ever. With a few taps and swipes of a finger, life’s moments are captured, beautified and posted to social media channels across the Internet in near real time.

Falling in accordance with the changing times for photography, the Creator Gallery in North Aurora is intermingling photography instruction with social media and mobile-app editing tutorials in two supplemental classes to be offered in September and October.

The classes are generated by the idea that, “If I have the skills, I’m no longer limited by technology,” Creator Gallery part-owner Kevin Kuster said.

Kuster will teach each class alongside Creator Gallery photographer and graphic designer Tom King of North Aurora.

Through each class, beginners and intermediate students will delve into the world of photography through the lens of point-and-shoot cameras, digital SLRs and – now – mobile devices.

“In this day and age, everyone is taking pictures and everyone wants to take better pictures,” Kuster said. “The artist is the important part, not the tool that they’re using.”

Kuster also said 80 percent of his personal photography is taken using a mobile phone, adding that – as a professional photographer – using mobile apps such as Instagram make the often time-consuming task of photo manipulation “feel like less work.”

Kuster said Instagram and mobile photography “reinvigorated” his passion for the medium after buying a smartphone a year-and-a-half ago.

“What I love about my mobile phone [is] I always have my camera with me,” he said.

“It’s right there in my pocket, and I can edit and upload photos right away – and get a response and immediate feedback.”

As an artist, Kuster uses Instagram to share his work and enjoys its ability to start a near instantaneous dialogue online through images.

As the CEO and chief photo director of the #JJ community on Instagram, a feed found via @JoshJohnson, Kuster has helped create a network of nearly half-a-million mobile photographers who share as few as 5,000 and as many as 30,000 submissions a day using the hashtag #JJ, Kuster said.

Through the @JoshJohnson feed, mobile photographers can enter daily photo contests and post themed entries via Instagram, using the feed’s hashtag. The images are then shared among the community of photographers he has helped create.

Kuster will delve into Instagram more thoroughly in the second, and supplemental class to the first, which will be in October.

The first class will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11. It’s a basic class for

beginner and intermediate photographers that will focus on better picture-taking techniques with everyday subjects, such as family and friends, as well as portrait and travel photography.

The second class will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. It will delve into photo editing; how to select the best images; how to use mobile apps – like Instagram – to manipulate photos; and how and where to post them. The class also will cover how to connect with people using hashtags and how to accumulate additional followers on social media outlets such as Facebook.

Kuster recommends bringing the camera students use most often to take photos, whether it’s a smartphone, point-and-shoot or digital SLR. “I don’t care what you shoot with; I can teach you to be a better photographer,” he said.

Defined as routinely exhibiting the mindset of “Holy cow, this is my time,” the positive affliction first gripped Davis at the end of his junior season.

It soon claimed classmate Nathan Klair, too.

Should the North Stars hold off a tough batch of contenders to claim their fourth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title, it should be easy to pinpoint the catalyst.

“Just sensing that urgency, me and Nathan really saw that in our team that we needed to pick it up and maybe get motivated and get our team motivated,” Davis said. “We set our team in the right direction, I believe.”

North absorbed more graduation losses than in past seasons, losing four of its top five and five of its top seven

from a team that finished as a regional and sectional runner-up en route to the IHSA Class 3A state meet.

Davis, Klair and classmate Austin Kyle took charge of the situation this summer.

The North Stars seniors organized team-building activities that included ultimate frisbee games as well as team breakfasts and dinners – most often at Randall’s Pancake House and Red Robin, respectively.

Once North’s annual team campout at Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin arrived late last month, the North Stars felt their camaraderie was in midseason form.

“As soon as we built up our team as a family, everyone wanted to show up at practice,” Davis said. “That’s what happened and now everyone wants to get going.”

Still, the motivation had to start somewhere, and Davis found it in joining Klair – North’s top returner – in his summer training regimen.

Weary of hanging around the edge of the top seven,

Davis increased his summer mileage from 400 to 500, ranging between six and 15 miles a day and running seven days a week.

“It’s not that he wasn’t trying last year, it’s just that he was normal last year. A normal, good St. Charles North runner,” Harrington said. “And then has just taken it up another notch.”

Beyond Davis and Klair, North will need a pack of juniors that includes Hayden Joyce, Steve Lewandowski, Dylan Srocki, Max Markowicz, Justin Delgado and Danny Obernesser to mature quickly.

Harrington stressed not being overambitious in summer training. By next year, the goal will be for that group to make the progression Davis did.

“That’s a natural jump for a kid that’s done the work to get there,” Harrington said.

“Usually, you don’t want to go too much, but the summer’s the time to jump. If you can handle it throughout the summer, boom, there you go.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Geneva returns six of its top seven runners from last season, but veteran coach Bob Thomson cautions that those slots don’t have to be etched in stone.

“I’m not saying they’ll get knocked off, but there’s a lot of girls waiting in the wings right now,” Thomson said.

The Vikings already were young with top incumbents such as McKenzie Altmayer, a sophomore, and Brooke Nusser, a junior. Add some emerging freshmen and runners who made strides from last

season’s freshman-sophomore lineup, and the Vikings could develop the welcome problem of having too much talent.

With a handful of runners nursing minor offseason bumps and bruises, that’s all the better for competition.

“I’m not sure they’re where they would be normally this time of year, but I think they’ll rebound just fine,” Thomson said. “I’m not concerned, I just know they’ve got a ways to come back, but they’ll be back fine.”

Count to five: Conversely, Kaneland coach Doug Ecker is searching for top contributors beyond his known commodi-

ties, including returning 2A individual champion Victoria Clinton, who’s working to get her “running legs” back after training as a triathlete all summer.

“Our weakness will be a lack of depth and experience beyond the top five runners.

Several girls in the top five have a history of being prone to injury and sickness, and that is a major concern for us,” Ecker wrote. “The girls will have to stay healthy to have an opportunity to accomplish their goals of returning to the state meet for a third straight year and finishing in the top three in the conference.”

Dakota Roman, Batavia, So. The youngest of the Bulldogs’ core runners, Roman brings state meet experience and serves as an example for the underclassmen Batavia wants to accelerate into leadership roles.

Brianna Bower, Kaneland, So. All-conference in cross country and all-state in the 3,200 meters in track, Bower is itching for a strong follow-up to her debut season.

Jenny Muehlbauer, Batavia, Jr. Along with classmate Alicia Grant, Muehlbauer developed well during track season and in summer workouts.

Torree Scull, St. Charles East, Jr. Scull, the Saints’ longtime lynchpin, provided the Chronicle-area’s best 3A state finish with a 31stplace run in 17:20 last fall.

St. Charles’ Steimle sizzling at Wash U. Lauren Steimle is really cooking with the women’s soccer team at Washington University in St. Louis.

That statement is true in both the literal and figurative senses. Steimle, a senior from St. Charles, is a key ingredient in the winning recipe coach Jim Conlon has developed for the Bears, who are ranked fourth in the nation among NCAA-Division III schools.

“I think he’s kind of happy with my versatility,” says Steimle, who can play either forward or midfield.

Steimle started 20 of 22 matches as a sophomore, scoring 11 goals, but was slowed last season by painful shin splints. AdLauren Steimle mitting she’s “still maybe not quite up to 100 percent,” she seems comfortable adding flavor as an extra spice, rather than being a main component.

“I’m usually a sub, so I try to come in off the bench and give a spark,” Steimle said.

Steimle scored a goal in Washington’s season-opening victory at Rhodes College last week, giving her 18 in her collegiate career. She’s No. 13 on the list of career goal scorers at the school.

Steimle played her prep soccer at Elgin Academy, scoring 113 goals, including 39 her season year. She also was a success in the classroom, graduating as the salutatorian of her class and being named Elgin Academy Student of the Year in math, science and computer science.

It wasn’t surprising, then, that schools with outstanding academic reputations, like Northwestern and Case Western Reserve, were interested in having Steimle as a student.

“I was looking to do engineering and I also wanted to play soccer,” Steimle said.

“Wash U seemed to the be the best of both worlds.”

Steimle has continued her academic success in college.

ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs She has a 3.9 GPA while majoring in systems engineering with a minor in operations management.

“I’m pretty interested in industrial engineering,” she said. “A lot of it is applied mathematics, using that to figure out the best way to do something.”

She sees herself working as an analyst or research person with an industrial firm once her college days are over. In the meantime, she still has plenty of work left to do on the soccer pitch. The Bears are coming off a 19-2-1 season in which both of their losses were to Wheaton College, including a season-ending 3-1 decision in a regional final.

“Our mentality is just kind focusing one game at a time,“ Steimle said. “The rest of it will come. Right now, we’re just focusing on our game [Saturday] against DePauw.”

Steimle is happy with her decision to continue her athletic career in college.

“It’s been great,“ she says.

“I think soccer – it’s definitely a different college experience.

I think a big part of it is just being part of a team. A lot of my teammates are my best friends. … It’s fun to be able to travel to New York with 20 of your best friends.”

Steimle said trying to be successful both in the classroom and the athletic field eats up a lot of hours in the day, but she still tries to find time for leisure pursuits with her friends and teammates.

“I guess I recently began to explore restaurants in St. Louis,” she said. “I’ve been trying to experiment with cooking. Can’t say I’ve been completely successful.”

That’s certainly a rarity where Steimle is concerned.

ST. CHARLES – Establishing a lead was no problem for the St. Charles East girls volleyball team Wednesday.

It was holding on to those leads that proved difficult for the Saints.

Despite racing out to a pair of huge leads only to see them vanish, the Saints emerged with a 23-25, 25-9, 25-23 nonconference victory over the visiting Rosary Royals.

The first game saw the Saints jump out to a 6-1 lead, only to have the Royals come back to make it a back-and-forth battle. Rosa- Jennie Kull ry eventually grabbed a 17-16 lead and closed strong, locking up Game 1, 2523.

East figured something out before Game 2, as the Saints steamrolled the Royals, tallying the game’s first seven points and 18 of the first 22 en route to a blowout 25-9 victory.

“We just came out with a lot more intensity, a lot more energy, a lot more confidence, and we wanted to win. That’s the big difference,” East junior Megan Schildmeyer said.

But the same problems that haunted East in Game 1 came back in Game 3.

The Saints again jumped out to a big lead, this one 9-1, but again watched it evaporate.

Rosary tied it at 13 and took leads of 14-13 and 16-15.

But eventually the back-andforth action settled into a slim Saints advantage, and the home team held on to win the third game, 25-23, as well as the match.

But it wasn’t easy.

“Mentally, we’ve been up and down,” Saints coach Jennie Kull said. “In the second game, we were real focused. …

Rosary picked up, of course, and we just needed to continue to execute. It was kind of a roller coaster, but I’m pleased at the outcome because I think that they were able to persevere and finish and finish the match. That’s really important for a young team.”

“It was a challenge for our mental toughness,” Schildmeyer said. “We really had to gut it out and dig our feet in and not give them the lead again.”

Schildmeyer was one of two Saints to pick up a pair of aces on the night. She also ranked second on the team with seven kills, trailing fellow junior Mikaela Mosquera, who had nine.

Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann was pleased with her team’s resiliency despite the outcome.

“I am pretty happy because we have a lot of younger players, newer players to the team, girls who played on JV last year. So for us to be clicking that way – I’m not surprised we had those downfalls, but I’m happy to see us pop right back up,” Hartmann said.

The win moves the Saints to 3-0 on the season, while the loss sends the Royals to a 3-3 record.

St. Charles North goalkeeper Billy Larsen has been a bright spot for a North Stars team that is 0-3 on the season, including 0-2 so far at the Barrington Invitational.

0-4 at Barrington last year, but Del Toro said the Cadets nonetheless are determined to avoid getting skunked there this season.

On the other side of the Barrington bracket, St. Charles North also will seek to redeem itself Friday in its pool finale against Crystal Lake South.

North is 0-3 on the season, having dropped its season opener against Neuqua Valley before losing Barrington tournament games against New Trier and Rockford Boylan, which beat North, 2-0, on Tuesday.

North coach Eric Willson said he’s not panicking about the 0-3 start given the rugged schedule the North Stars have encountered. He praised senior goalkeeper Billy Larsen for keeping North competitive, and said the

team played its best half of the season in the first half against Boylan.

Pending Friday’s results, the Cadets and North Stars could see each other on the final day of the tournament Saturday.

Stonewalled Geneva is 0-2 in UEC River play after Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to Larkin.

It was an especially bothersome setback considering the Vikings were unable to convert a pair of penalty kicks and Geneva had what coach Ryan Estabrook thought should have been ruled a goal not recognized by the referee.

“It was a game we look back on and say, ‘We felt like we should have four goals last night, maybe even six goals,’ to be honest,”

Estabrook said Wednesday.

“We’re just not getting it done that way. It was a little bit frustrating.”

Larkin goalkeeper Aldair Dominguez had lots to do with Geneva’s angst on Tuesday. Both of the Vikings’ penalty-kick shots were on frame and “well taken,” Estabrook said.

“The Larkin coach was telling me he thinks he’s the best goalkeeper that’s ever been at Larkin and, after this game, I could see why he said that, because the kid played phenomenal,” Estabrook said.

The Vikings (1-2 overall) will seek to regroup today in a home match against DeKalb.

Marmion and St. Charles North are 0-for-the-Barrington Invitational as pool play winds down.

Both teams will have another chance in the pool play finale Friday after the Cadets and North Stars each dropped both of their first two matches in Barrington.

Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro has been surprised by the Cadets’ defensive struggles early in the season, although there were improved results on the defensive front Tuesday, when the Cadets fell to the host Broncos, 2-0.

Del Toro said Marmion went back to its familiar alignment of playing four defenders against Barrington after experimenting with using three guys in the back in the season’s first few matches, including a 3-1 loss to Lake Zurich to open tournament play.

The Cadets (0-3-1 overall) return an experienced defensive corps, making the Cadets’ problems there perplexing to their coach.

“We’re getting a lot of [scoring] chances, it’s just the other end where we’re struggling a little bit, but I think it will come around,” Del Toro said.

Marmion has a new goalkeeper, sophomore Matt Fletcher.

Del Toro said Fletcher is 6-foot-3 and athletic, and has not been the source of the Cadets’ problems.

“It’s everything in front of him,” said Del Toro, whose team will face Wheaton Warrenville South on Friday in the final pool game.

Every player participated in Wednesday’s practice in full, including Earl Bennett, Henry Melton and D.J. Williams.

For the Bears’ Week 1 opponent, the Bengals, starting left tackle Andrew Whitworth (knee) did not participate, along with cornerback Brandon Ghee (concussion) and guard Mike Pollak (knee).

Defensive tackle Devon Still (knee) was a limited participant. Tight end Tyler Eifert (forearm), defensive end Carlos Dunlap (concussion) and right tackle Andre Smith (knee) all participated in full.

Hank Phillippi Ryan’s newest mystery/thriller, “The Wrong Girl,” is an energetically plotted story notable, as well, for its likable characters and Boston-area setting.

A woman of many talents and enviable time management skills, author Ryan has also been awarded several prestigious mystery-writing awards.

Two unrelated mysteries merge into a maelstrom of murder, threat and unceasing action. “The Wrong Girl” gets off to a lively start but halfway through, the action cranks into overdrive.

We meet protagonist Jane Ryland, a well-known TV journalist-turned-newspaper reporter, as she adjusts to getting fired from her TV reporting job.

She’s also trying desperately to negotiate a fierce attraction to Boston police detective Jake Brogan.

Professionally, a love connection between them is emphatically taboo and yet there are enough sparks between them to melt the ubiquitous snowfall that serves as this story’s chilly backdrop.

Amid another uneasy pall – that of ever-present job insecurity – a former colleague, also recently fired, appeals to Jane when she discovers that her newly discovered birth mother is not her birth mother after all. he and his partner find a murdered young woman with no identification, two traumatized toddlers and a missing infant. They place these two children, who also have no identification, with Maggie Gunnison at the Department of Family Services.

Jane is the bridge that connects both threads in this nicely plotted mystery thriller.

Assigned by her editor to do one quick story on the murder in Roslin-

dale, she decides to shore up her job security by producing a meaty follow up.

She visits Maggie at the DFS to look into what happens to children, like those found in Roslindale, who get swallowed by a system with few resources and little time.

While Jane is busy chasing down leads for her stories, Tuck badgers her to help her find out why Brannigan linked her with the wrong birth mother.

Author Ryan enjoys crafting chaotic moments when, for example, Jane is on the phone with the cops or her editor in the midst of an action scene and Tuck is trying to distract her with her own imperatives.

These three- and four-way conversations, hard to do on the page, work pretty well.

We are used to visualizing such verbal chaos on the screen in movies starring Bruce Willis or the chatty Rizzoli and Isles duo. Ryan, however, injects a bit more adrenaline and a lot more frenzy.

Suddenly Jane is no longer safe.

Her home is invaded; her cat disappears; and she is followed and nearly driven off the Mass Pike.

Clearly she’s on to something.

She gets threats on her cellphone that prompt her publisher to pull her from her stories, a development that endangers her new position at a time when layoffs loom.

Meanwhile, suspense intensifies when a high-level employee at Brannigan is found suffocated and another one is nearly incinerated in a suspicious house fire.

Children are the valuable commodity, here, and money, of course, is the motivator.

Jane and Jake wind up catching each other’s back amid the shooting, as they turn toward a questionable future. This book is the second in the series.

The first, “The Other Woman,” was well received. For Ryan’s fans, it looks like Jake and Jane may hatch a third.

View tablet computer at angle to ease neck strain Dear Doctor K: I love my tablet computer, but my neck hurts every time I use it. Any suggestions?

Dear Reader: Using a tablet computer shouldn’t be a pain in the neck, but for all too many people, it is. Why? Widely popular tablets such as the iPad, Nook, Kindle Fire, Xoom and others are so light and easy to handle that you can hold one on your lap or in your hand. That can put you in a position that’s bad for your neck, shoulders and back. But simply adjusting your viewing angle should provide relief.

Dr. Jack Dennerlein and his colleagues at the Harvard School of Public Health looked into the problem. Using an infrared 3-D motion analysis system, they tracked how different tablet positions affect the body.

Specifically, they looked at what happened to a person’s neck. Your neck houses the top of your spine, which is a stack of small bones called cervical vertebrae. Your neck bones and muscles prefer it when your spine is straight – as when you are standing with your head erect.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Your neck muscles get strained when your neck has to bend forward and downward.

This is what the research team found: When you are working with a tablet held on the lap or placed flat on a table, your neck has to bend much more to see the tablet screen – compared with working with a desktop or notebook computer. This can cause strain and even injuries to muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments and spinal discs.

However, when you view a tablet that is on a table, propped at a steep angle in a tablet case, you have much less neck strain and pain.

The research team didn’t study what’s best for the hands and wrists, assuming you use your tablet for tasks that need typing. However, here’s what I tell my patients if they plan to do a lot of typing (such as answering a lot of emails):

• Don’t work with the tablet in your lap. Use a table and chair.

• Use a tablet case that holds the tablet at a comfortable viewing angle.

• Use a keyboard, instead of the keyboard screen on the tablet: If the tablet screen is propped up at the ideal angle to see, it will be hard to type on. And there are very light wireless keyboards for tablets (that’s what I use).

• Shift your hands, your weight, or even stand up when you can.

• Take a break every 15 minutes.

If all you want to do is read on your tablet, use a device that props it up. Or use a device that rests on the floor by your feet and holds a tablet propped up at the correct angle in front of you, like a music stand. You can just read and tap the screen to flip the page, your neck in the position it likes best.

Dear Teens: Most of you are aware that tanning in sunshine and in tanning booths is dangerous, but the desire to have the bronze look year-round is stronger than the fear of wrinkles and possible skin cancer later on in life.

The American Academy of Dermatology surveyed over 500 young people, ages 12 to 17. Almost 80 percent said they knew that tanning can be dangerous and that childhood sunburns increase the risk of skin cancer, yet 66 percent said they looked healthier and felt better with a tan. Sixty percent also reported that they got sunburned at least once last summer.

The academy recommended that those who choose to be in the sun use a proper sunscreen, avoid the sun in the middle of the day and wear a broadbrimmed hat. Girls are better than boys about wearing sunscreen – 53 percent of the girls use sunscreen, compared to only 36 percent of the boys.

Dr. Jeffrey Lauber, a dermatologist in Southern California, says there is no such thing as a safe suntan and that any time the sun causes the pigment in the skin to darken, the skin has suffered damage.

Teens, please be aware of skin damage caused by the sun. Be smart – protect yourself!

Dear Abby: I am appalled at older workers who hang onto their jobs so they can live lavish lifestyles, while young workers trying to support families are left with lack of advancement or even laid off because they don’t have tenure.

At the bridge table, the more “unthinkable” thoughts you have and analyze, the more likely you are to succeed. In this deal, South is in six spades. West leads the club ace. After ruffing in the dummy, how should declarer continue?

When South opened with a vulnerable pre-empt, North wondered about a grand slam. But not knowing how to find out if his partner had the diamond king or a diamond singleton, he took the practical shot at six spades.

South begins with 11 top tricks: seven spades, one heart, one diamond and two club ruffs in the dummy. The hunt is on for a 12th winner.

South should play a trump to his hand and ruff his last club on the board. But what then?

One possibility is also to eliminate the hearts, then to hope for luck in diamonds. But that should not work here.

In fact, the contract is guaranteed. After the club ruff, a spade to the king and the second club ruff, declarer should return to his hand with a spade and run the heart 10. Here it loses to East’s queen, but what can East do?

Whatever he returns concedes a trick. And even if West could cover the heart 10 with the queen or king, South would win with dummy’s ace, then run the heart jack, discarding a diamond from his hand (unless, of course, East covered with the other heart honor).

Consider as many possibilities as possible.
