A

s a photojournalist, I have always cherished a good working relationship with local law enforcement.

That’s what I was thinking about as events unfolded in Lake County this week, where Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz was fatally shot and a manhunt got underway.

It always is my hope that police officers and deputies understand when a terrible thing happens, I’m just there to do my job. And part of my focus is to try and stay out of their way, as they do extreme-

ly difficult work protecting citizens.

The first 11 years of my career was spent in Lake County, and Fox Lake, especially. Lt. Gliniewicz was one of those officers with whom I like to think I had a great rapport.

I got to know him over countless occasions covering breaking news in that area and doing stories about his great work with the Fox Lake Police Explorers program. I remember him the way his friends and colleagues have been remembering him.

He was a great guy and loved to joke. And he had a handshake that you’d never forget.

Family, students pay tribute to fallen seventh-grader

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kevin Pepera of St. Charles said his son, Cameron, was quiet but observant.

“He had a smile that was always there, and he was happy,” Kevin Pepera said in a phone interview. “We knew he was a joy.”

Cameron Pepera died Wednesday morning after suffering the effects of a pre-existing medical condition, Thompson Middle School Principal Tim Loversky announced in an email. He was 13.

Cameron Pepera, a Thompson seventh-grader, was taken to a hospital Tuesday from a cross-country meet that had been at the school, St. Charles School District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney said.

Cameron Perpera participated in cross-country at the school and also earned a first-degree black belt in 2014, Kevin Pepera said.

The seventh-grader was on the honor roll during the previous school year, and he was the best of friends with his sister, Paige, a fifth-grader in the district. Cameron Pepera

Cameron Pepera’s classmates knew he was an Ohio State fan, too. The Buckeyes’ logo was part of the many images and messages left on notes that covered his locker and the area around it in the day after

his death.

“Right now, his locker is completely engulfed in sticky notes of love and respect and kindness,” Loversky said. “It’s been a neat tribute the students have created.”

Teachers at the school Thursday told Loversky that Cameron Pepera was a hard-working boy who really put all of his effort into his classwork.

Bird in Aurora tests positive for West Nile virus KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – A bird found in Aurora last week has tested positive for West Nile virus, making it the first bird in Kane County to do so this year, according to a Kane County Health Department news release issued Thursday.

The health department collects certain dead birds to send to a state lab for testing as part of its West Nile program. The birds must not show signs of decay, trauma, maggot or insect activity, according to the release.

Call 630-444-3040 to report the presence of freshly dead birds to determine whether testing is recommended.

“I’m kind of setting the tone,” she said. “They’re looking at you as a role model.”

Police recently have come under scrutiny in the wake of events that sparked national headlines and public outcry, such as the 2014 shooting death of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, by a white police officer.

This year, the death of a black man in police custody led to riots in Baltimore, and video of a Naperville woman’s traffic stop made news after she died in a Texas jail days later.

Lalley, who will mark 20 years in law enforcement next year, said she is upfront with

her students about the field.

Some won’t trust them simply because they are in a police uniform, she said, but they should remain professional and do the best they can.

“If you immediately get an attitude and give back what they’re giving you,” she said, “it’s just a recipe for disaster.”

The uniform has, in fact, become a target.

In December, two New York City police officers were fatally shot while sitting in their patrol car. News reports indicated the gunman did so as retribution for killings of unarmed black men by white police officers. Similarly, a sheriff’s deputy was shot to death Aug. 28 as he filled his patrol car at a gas station in Texas. News reports indicated the deputy apparently was targeted because of his uniform.

True Blue Support Rally set in Geneva Event created to back those involved in law enforcement

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Jane Diano said the recent death of a Fox Lake police lieutenant in the line of duty “hit home” for her.

Diano, a Geneva resident, said she has a brother who is a police officer at a suburban police department. She said the death of Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz motivated her to do something.

After posting an item on a Facebook page about putting together some sort of rally, she said she was encouraged to create a page to bring attention to that idea.

In a matter of hours, she said, her Facebook page, Red, White and True Blue – www. facebook.com/redwhiteandtrueblue – had hundreds of likes. An event has been scheduled – the True Blue Support Rally – for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Kane County courthouse, 100 S. Third St. in Geneva.

Diano said the rally is intended to show support for those who work in law enforcement. She said there is too much criticism aimed at police officers.

“I felt I had to speak up and do more,” Diano said. “You always hear about the silent majority. I felt it was just time for

the silent majority to speak up.”

She noted there has been a great deal of support for Gliniewicz, who was fatally shot Tuesday.

Diano said she still is working out details for the event.

She will distribute blue lights for those who “want to light up the night blue,” according to the event details on Facebook.

There also might be a prayer offered for police officers.

“All I want to do is bring people together,” Diano said.

“I feel that we are Americans … but the country is being so divided right now.”

“The paramount thing for us is to treat everyone as equally and fairly as possible,” Smith said.

Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer said community-based policing is important in establishing relationships with community members. Events like National Night Out in August help officers connect with the public in a positive way, he said.

“Citizens need to trust you, and they can’t trust you if they don’t know you,” Kramer said.

And, he said, police need to back that up with good training.

Members of the sheriff’s office have received training in cultural sensitivity, as well as crisis intervention training, which taught officers how to cope with high-tension situations and to recognize mental health issues, Kramer said.

“It’s a de-escalation tool,” he said.

More training soon will be

available to local police. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office – which in May hosted a symposium titled “Moving Beyond Ferguson: A Symposium for Law Enforcement CEOs” – is partnering with the DuPage and DeKalb state’s attorneys to

sponsor a November training program for up to 80 police officers about interactions with youth, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

Officers are more aware of the need to present a positive, professional image because public perception can sometimes be fueled by misinterpretation of events or national police misconduct incidents that are more likely to be highlighted, Lalley said.

First impressions matter, which is why Elburn Trustee David Gualdoni – who described the village’s police force as “outstanding” – said he dislikes the department’s new Ford Interceptors’ goldon-black color scheme.

“They look very CIA-ish or military-ish,” he said.

“The police need to be approachable.”

Overall, police in central Kane County said their relationship with the community has remained intact.

Even Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith – whose department recently fired an officer charged with sexually assaulting a child – said as much.

“As far as our relationship with the community, overall it’s very good,” Smith said. “Generally, most of the citizens can separate some of these incidents – especially with the officer – they separate that from the rest of the police department.”

National surveys by the Bureau of Justice Statistics indicate police generally conduct themselves properly during interactions with the public.

In 2011 – the most recent year surveyed – 62.9 million U.S. residents, or about a quarter of the population, had at least one contact with police. The survey found 51 percent of the contacts occurred when people requested police assistance, and 49 percent were initiated by police.

“The majority of persons with police contact believed the police behaved properly,” according to a news release about the survey. “In 2011, 93 percent of those who requested police assistance, 88 percent of drivers pulled over in traffic stops, and 71 percent

with youth and why adolescents tend to test boundaries and challenge authority. The aim is to increase the likelihood that police interactions with youth will result in positive outcomes, the brochure stated.

In classroom discussions about current events, students will ask why a police officer acted in a certain way, Lalley said, noting she gives them the framework from a legal standpoint, as well as the practical application.

She said it’s important for police to discuss the current events, as well. The more officers are exposed to and understand what’s going on in the news “only makes them better officers,” she said.

Supervisors with the St. Charles Police Department bring up videos that are “sweeping across the nation” and review the incidents with patrol shifts, Kintz said.

However, he noted, video footage isn’t always clearcut. He compared it to a televised football game in which only one of several cameras shows the receiver cross the goal line.

“It’s just a word of caution that they’re a great tool but have to be put in perspective,” Kintz said.

He served in the United States Navy Reserves for eight years.

Jack loved the St. Charles community and was involved in many clubs, organizations, and committees, including The South Elgin Animal Shelter, which he designed. He was a precinct committeeman for The Republican Party of St. Charles.

He was dedicated to his work and loved his family with whom he spent many enjoyable camping and skiing trips. He especially loved the mountains, woods, and nature. Jack was keen on preservation, and helped begin one of the first recycling stations in the area in the 1960’s.

Jack will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and William Marshall; and two sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Lohs and Nancy Marshall Fischer.

Jack is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothea “Dotty” Driessen Marshall; two sons, Daniel (Liza Bachrach) Marshall, and Gregory John Marshall; two daughters, Karin (Merlin) Marshall Kemp, and Joan (Chris) Marshall Collins. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren.

Born: Oct. 21, 1935; in Geneva, IL Died: Sept. 2, 2015; in St. Charles, IL John Alan “Jack” Marshall, age 79, of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at his home. He was born on October 21, 1935 at Geneva Community Hospital in Geneva, IL, the son of George (Helen Faitz) Marshall. Jack was the youngest of eight children.

Jack was an architect and a lifelong resident of St. Charles. He graduated from St. Charles High School, then attended Elgin Community College, Northern Illinois University, and The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

After working with The Frazier, Raftery, Orr and Fairbanks firm in Geneva and The Thomas Emma firm in St. Charles, he received his license in June of 1966, and went on to establish his own firm of Marshall Associates in St. Charles. For 32 years he designed residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, and churches in The Fox Valley Area. His business survives today as Marshall Architects with son, Dan Marshall in St. Charles and Marshall Architects of Chicago with son, Greg Marshall

Cameron Kevin Pepera was a 7th grader at Thompson Middle School in St. Charles. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. “It’s very unusual,” Ulven said of the annual event. “If people haven’t been part of things like this before – folk festivals and storytelling festivals – it’s different than anything they may have experienced. … Folk music generally covers a lot of ground, basically ethnic and traditional music.”

The suggested donation is $20 a day for adults and $15 for teens and elders. Children 12 and younger are free. A family rate of $45 will be offered for each day.

Brothers retire from Coca-Cola after 40-plus years

Dave Kinney, 65, of Genoa will leave Coca-Cola Bottling Company in St. Charles on Sept 18, and his brother, Dan Kinney, 62, of St. Charles will leave Sept. 11.

The brothers have a combined 89 years of experience working as deliverymen out of the Coca-Cola site, at 105 Industrial Drive in St. Charles.

“It may sound funny, but I’m going to miss seeing my brother,” Dave Kinney said.

“I’ll miss seeing him every day.”

Dave and Dan Kinney see each other at the Coca-Cola property before heading off on their respective routes – the DeKalb area for Dave Kinney and the Wheaton area for Dan Kinney.

Dave Kinney started working for Coca-Cola in 1970, and his brother started there 14 months later after getting their father’s blessing to leave work on their farm land behind to make money.

St. Charles businesses pass liquor compliance check KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A total of 21 area businesses recently passed an inspection that tested their compliance with liquor laws, according to a St. Charles police news release.

With the help of a 19-yearold and a 20-year-old, police Wednesday conducted the compliance checks on the businesses, the release stated.

The 19- and 20-year-olds were trained in compliance inspection policies, procedures and safety measures by department representatives before the inspections and were closely monitored throughout the detail, according to the release.

“We are pleased to see that

the businesses inspected were in full compliance and want to thank them all for their vigilance and continued support,” Ray Rogina, St. Charles mayor and liquor commissioner, wrote in the release.

Congratulatory letters of compliance from Rogina will be delivered to all businesses subject to this compliance inspection, according to the release.

“The city works hard to maintain a safe, enjoyable environment for residents and visitors,” St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan wrote in the release. “Part of that is making sure businesses that serve alcohol operate responsibly through consistent compliance checks and enforcement.”

asloboda@shawmedia.com Kane County Coroner Rob Russell – who has been at odds with the County Board over finances – said Thursday he has initiated legal action against the auditor over unpaid bills.

The County Board in July approved a resolution authorizing the auditor to withhold approval for payment by the treasurer with any contracts, invoices or other claims projected to exceed a department’s or office’s budget.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick has said, as of July 31, the coroner’s office is trending about 1 percent over budget.

Payment is being withheld for items related to morgue cleanup and vehicle repairs and maintenance, among other expenses, Russell said.

“Not huge bills, but it’s the principle of it,” he said, calling it a “blatant disregard for the internal control statute.”

He notified board members of his legal challenge in a letter that was accompanied by an opinion from Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.

“I encourage any and all of you to please insist that the auditor cease and desist his illegal actions in withholding payments legally authorized and needed by this office,” Russell’s letter stated. “If not, I will be forced to continue with the legal action needed to compel him to follow the law.”

Auditor Terry Hunt, who is on vacation until next week, said it is premature for him to comment because he has not had an opportunity to review Russell’s letter.

However, he did confirm the coroner’s invoices that aren’t statutorily mandated – including those for promotional items – are not being approved. The coroner could remedy the

situation by curtailing expenditures, thus bringing projections within budget; request a budget adjustment; or a combination of the two, Hunt said.

Russell has unsuccessfully sought a budget adjustment to account for an anticipated $56,065 overage in autopsies. He wants the board to repeal its resolution from July, he said, calling it a “bad law.”

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said he is seeking clarification from McMahon because he is “confident” the state’s attorney isn’t suggesting

county taxpayers fund promotional items for the coroner during a political campaign season.

“I know that the board has taken a firm position that when he’s projected to be over budget, that they want to take a closer look at the expenditures,” Lauzen said. “And the largest expenditure that’s under consideration right now is for what most of us would consider political campaign giveaways.”

The committee that oversees the coroner’s office is next scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Boles to be next Kane County chief judge

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County 16th Judicial Circuit elected Judge Susan Clancy Boles as its new chief judge, effective Dec. 7, when the current term of Chief Judge Judith Brawka ends.

Boles said she still is adjusting to the news.

“I have to say I’m absolutely thrilled and totally honored, both to be taking on responsibilities and by the vote of confidence from my Susan colleagues and Clancy Boles people I work with every day and respect,” Boles said. “It’s great. It will be fun, looking forward to it.”

Boles will be the second female chief judge in the history of Kane County. Brawka was the first. Boles said of the 14 circuit court judges in Kane County, she and Brawka are

the only two women.

“Each of us will be serving back-to-back terms,” Boles said.

Boles was appointed as an associate judge in March 2007.

The Illinois Supreme Court appointed her to the position of circuit judge in January 2009, filling the vacancy of R. Peter Grometer, who had retired.

She was elected as a circuit judge from the Fourth Sub Circuit in November 2010 and currently presides over a criminal felony court at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township.

Boles is a graduate of St. Charles High School, Vanderbilt University, and Valparaiso University School of Law. An attorney since 1990, Boles initially was associated with the Chicago Law Firm of Rooks, Pitts, and Poust.

In 1993, she joined the litigation firm of Clancy Law Offices in St. Charles, where she was a partner until her appointment as an associate judge.

GENEVA – The Geneva Park District has planned parents night out events at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

BATAVIA – The annual Block Party Taste of Batavia will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday on the Batavia Riverwalk near Houston Street and North Island Avenue, as well as on North River Street.

The event will include $3 food tastings, live music from local bands River City Revival and Patrick James, as well as headliner Dick Diamond and the Dusters, a classic car cruise night, pie bake off, twist-off and hula-hoop competitions for prizes, bags tournament and kids activities area with free bounce houses, according to a news release.

The event is organized by Batavia MainStreet.

Participating restaurants and groups include Gammon Coach House, Range Grill and

Tap, Pal Joey’s, Wilson Street Tavern and Diesels, Neighbors Magazine and Andre’s.

Also participating at their locations will be The River’s Edge Bar and Grill, Panda, Domino’s and Bulldogs Cellar Bar and Grill.

“The Block Party is going to be a great night in downtown Batavia full of music and fun,” Batavia MainStreet board member Jeff Matter stated in the release. “This is a chance for everyone to enjoy a block party because downtown is everyone’s neighborhood.”

It’s time to fix the government

Special To The Washington Post President Barack Obama has reached the point when a president’s thoughts turn to how he will spend his time after he leaves office, and he has reportedly suggested that one item on his agenda will be making the federal government more effective.

This is an ironic twist for someone who promised about six years ago to restore faith in our government and make it “cool again.” After all this time as the nation’s chief executive, he plans to make the government better after leaving office?

Imagine if the president had brought greater urgency and follow-through to addressing the government’s significant management and operational challenges early in his administration, when

he was best positioned to implement reforms critical to effective government.

Perhaps he could have avoided the botched rollout of HealthCare.gov, the online portal for his signature domestic policy achievement.

Perhaps he could have kept better tabs on the Department of Veterans Affairs, which became mired in a scandal over falsified wait times for patient care and other lapses.

Or perhaps he could have been more attuned to the deterioration of discipline at the Secret Service that led to an embarrassing sex scandal, or more aggressive about recruiting cybertalent and installing safeguards that might have prevented the theft of sensitive information on 21.5 million people from the Office of Personnel Management.

All of these missteps have reinforced the perception

that government cannot do anything right.

But it is not too late for the president to improve government efficiency and lay the groundwork for a successful transition to the next administration. Waiting until he leaves office would waste an important opportunity.

For starters, the president should acknowledge and embrace the fact that he is the leader of a two million-person civilian workforce, not just the boss of the few hundred people who work at the White House. He should hold frequent Cabinet meetings and use them to reinforce the importance of strong management by his top leaders. If a positive performance environment is being created and first-rate customer service is being delivered by an agency, he should reward it; if not, he must hold his leadership team

accountable.

Second, good management depends on good people, and the president should make it clear to agency leaders that it is their responsibility to be involved in recruiting highly qualified individuals to government. Almost a third of the federal workforce will be eligible to retire within the next two years, providing an opening to restock the government with young, new talent.

Third, the president should emulate the best-managed private-sector entities by encouraging a “culture of recognition” throughout government. Today, the federal workforce is risk averse, and for good reason. If an idea fails or something goes wrong, an individual’s career can be ruined. If something is done right, no one notices.

It is difficult to imagine how a private-sector corporation

could thrive or even survive with such a culture.

Fourth, the president should aggressively pursue a major modernization of the rules of government employment, many of which date to 1949. Pay should be determined by the market.

Hiring and firing processes need to be streamlined, and there should be fewer layers of political appointees.

Finally, it is time to begin preparing for the transition of power. The president should make sure the January 2017 handoff is smooth, so the next administration is positioned to continue this critical work without the usual interruption created by election cycles.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER North Stars will look to play a full 48 minutes this week at Bartlett

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The scoreboard said 30-15 and at the end of the game, that was all that mattered.

The St. Charles North football team was 1-0 after beating Schaumburg in front of their home fans under the Friday night lights to start the season.

But any spectator Friday night at North knows it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the North Stars. Having a 30-3 halftime lead, and seeing the final score end up what it did, showed something that coach Rob Pomazak said at first provided good film for this week’s preparation, but also something that is expected to be corrected heading to Bartlett on Saturday.

“It really came down to Week 1 and not everyone understanding their alignments and assignments,” Pomazak said. “We watched it, corrected some things and it was a good teaching point for us as coaches. If we’re not teaching it well, or they’re not understanding it, we have to step back and see where the disconnect is. We got back to basics and think we’re where we want to be.”

For anyone heading out to Bartlett for the game Saturday, the game has been moved to an 11:30 a.m. kickoff in hopes of avoiding the heat that is expected for the early afternoon.

Practicing in the heat this week has also prepared North for what is expected to be a hot contest, regardless of the kickoff time change. Weather is expected to be hot and humid with temperatures getting up into the mid-to-high 90s throughout Saturday.

Aside from the slow second half, North also took away some positives, like holding a 30-point first half. Now heading out for their first road test of the season, a fast start could be key to another victory.

If we have a team down like we did (with Schaumburg), we have to keep our foot on the gas and finish it off.”

There’s no question that as

opponents get tougher, North will pay for mistakes like letting teams back into games, or getting too complacent with a big lead.

But the way things went in their opener, if there was a time for that to happen to teach North that the season won’t be all smooth sailing, it is glad it happened in Week 1 with a strong lead in hand.

Junior quarterback Zach Mettetal used his athleticism to keep several plays alive in both the first and second half, but his thoughts centered around staying focused and keeping the memory of what

happened in the second half with Schaumburg in the North Stars’ minds for the rest of the season and beyond.

“It really comes down to staying focused and paying attention to detail on film,” Mettetal said. “It’s a good learning experience for us going forward and just keeping in our minds while we’re out there to not let up. It’s different playing in a close game rather than being [up 30-3], but we have to play the same no matter what the score is.”

When a team has any down moments – not to say this is a down moment because the bot-

tom line is a 1-0 North football team going into Saturday’s game against Bartlett – a team turns to its captains to guide the way.

A defensive leader of the North Stars is linebacker Billy Duhownik, who knows a fast start is important, but a full 48 minutes will determine the winner this week.

“As fast as you start, how you finish is just as important, you know,” Duhownik said.

“It’s something we’ve put a lot of emphasis on this week in practice. I think we’re ready and going to get it done. We’re going to be 2-0.”

ROAD TRIPPING If you hosted a game in Week 1, chances are you’re playing on the road this week. Four of the Chronicle-area teams are on the road after hosting their openers.

Geneva will head to Richards, Kaneland to New Lenox to play Lincoln-Way Central, while both St. Charles North (Bartlett) and Marmion (Guerin, Indiana) will play Saturday on the road.

SOUTH ELGIN (1-0) AT BATAVIA (1-0)

REMEMBER WHEN… Daniel Santacaterina threw for 304 yards, including a 14yard completion to Mike Landi on a crucial third down that all but sealed Geneva’s 22-19 win over Richards last season.

That win was the second of seven straight for the Vikings to start the 2014 season.

WEEK OFF After St. Francis saw its Week 5 and homecoming game opponent, Chicago Hales Franciscan, drop out, the Spartans and coach Mike Fitzgerald were forced to move its Week 2 matchup with Chicago Catalyst/Maria to Week 5.

The school has been unable to fill the Week 2 slot, leaving it with a week off after winning the season opener, 46-0, over Kelvyn Park.

“We didn’t want our kids to not have a homecoming game,” Fitzgerald said of the moving of games. “We were hoping that something opened up so we could go somewhere to play, but that wasn’t the case.”

PLAYOFF WATCH Kaneland had a bit of a hiccup last season, finishing 4-5 and missing the playoffs for the first time in five seasons.

Coach Tom Fedderly has his team off to a strong start with its Week 1 win over Brooks, 45-22. Led by dual-threat quarterback Jake Marczuk, the Knights are primed to return to the level most people have come to expect the Knights program to be.

7:30 p.m., today The buzz in the stands These two teams got off to good starts in Week 1, both making a statement in their respective games. Batavia went on the road to beat Class 8A power Oswego, while South Elgin woke up in the second half to cruise past St. Charles East, 28-6, to improve to 1-0.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron was elated with the team’s win over Oswego, but knows an equally talented and difficult opponent in South Elgin awaits.

“We clearly know how good [South Elgin] is,” Piron said. “The team has tremendous skill players all over the field, many of which play both ways. South Elgin is a tough team to scheme for and we expect a tough game.”

The marquee matchup Batavia quarterback Kyle Niemiec against the South Elgin front seven I put this as the matchup to watch because of Batavia’s knowledge, or lack thereof, of exactly what South Elgin will present defensively. They did see film of the Storm’s Week 1 game with East, but with the Saints running their triple-option offense, it was hard to see exactly how South Elgin will lineup against a much more balanced, spread-out offense that Batavia will come out with.

Niemiec had a strong Week 1 game, finishing 20 for 34 for 266 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Canaan Coffey. If Niemiec can pick up early tendencies from the Storm defense, the Bulldogs could exploit the defense with its offensive

playmakers.

The X-factor

Derek Kumerov, South Elgin senior receiver Piron knows about Kumerov. There’s no secret. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder was everywhere in Week 1. He finished with 10 catches for 197 yards – including a 55-yard touchdown for the Storm’s first score of the season.

He also plays in the defensive backfield and intercepted a tipped pass in the first half, as well.

Batavia will attempt to get pressure on whatever quarterback tries to get the ball to Kumerov. The Storm rotated both sophomore Nate Gomez and senior Jake AmRhein in Week 1, but AmRhein saw much more action, passing for 220 yards. But regardless of which quarterback the Bulldogs see, defensive back Brett Bowman, who had an interception in Week 1, likely will draw the assignment of Kumerov.

Batavia will hope to get pressure on the quarterback to prevent deep throws to Kumerov, who has the ability to find the end zone any time the ball is in his hands.

Best-case scenario for the Storm

If their pass attack and rushing game find the perfect balance to keep the Batavia defense guessing, AmRhein no doubt will look to find Kumerov and fellow senior receiver Andrew Kamienski as much as possible. But South Elgin coach Patrik Pistorio realized at halftime in Week 1 the Storm needed to get back to what they do best and that puts the

ball in senior running back Shawn Griffin’s hands a lot.

Griffin exploded in the second half and finished Week 1 with 175 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown.

If the balance is on point, with Batavia having trouble limiting both Kumerov and Griffin, things could get interesting.

Best-case scenario for the Bulldogs Piron feels as if their passing game is one of the better ones in the state. Despite Oswego knowing about it, the Niemiec-Coffey connection struck for two touchdowns and 197 yards. South Elgin is aware of it, but can it stop it? If Niemiec can find time to throw the ball to Coffey and company, and can mix in a steady dose of Zach Garrett – who had three rushing scores in Week 1 – South Elgin could be in for a long night.

Chris Casey’s prediction

Batavia 42, South Elgin 20: Despite the play-making abilities of the Storm, I think Batavia is just too good of a team for this one to stay close. The Bulldogs proved me right in Week 1 and I’m sticking with them.

Even though South Elgin ended up taking care of East rather easily last week, there were holes in the defense that a strong Batavia offense will exploit and finish those drives that East was unable to. Piron thought they could have put up 40-plus points against Oswego, but had to settle for 36. They’ll get to 40 this week and move to 2-0.

PREP FOOTBALL WEEK 2 PREVIEW CAPSULES Jacobs (1-0) at St. Charles East (0-1), 7:30 p.m. today Last week’s results: Jacobs defeated Prospect, 26-24; St. Charles East lost to South Elgin, 28-6.

The skinny: Week 2 provides another tough matchup for the Saints. Jacobs is a team that is quite familiar with the tripleoption offense East runs, having faced one of the best teams in the state at running the option in Cary-Grove for a number of years. East had some success on offense, but could not finish off drives in Week 1.

With a young, fairly inexperienced group, the Saints are focusing in on continuing to learn and hope that week-to-week outcomes improve.

The Golden Eagles scored two touchdowns in the final 1:14 to come back and beat

Prospect in their opener. Jacobs quarterback Chris Katrenick is a strong Division-I prospect who was 17 for 22 for 206 yards and two touchdowns last week. For East, starting running back Cam Canales is “50-50” after a Week 1 injury, coach Bryce Farquhar said. If Canales is unable to go, Dante Macaluso will get the start in the backfield for the Saints.

But Farquhar said of the many challenges this “all-around solid” Jacobs football team presents, the core group of linebackers will be something East keys in on to try and limit making an impact. In the end, the key might end up being East’s defense keeping it in the game once again, as it was able to do so for about 3½ quarters against South Elgin in Week 1.

Extra point: East was within eight points with five minutes left in its opener against the

Storm before late turnovers caused the score to get a bit out of hand.

Geneva (1-0) at Richards (0-1), 7 p.m. today Last week’s results: Geneva defeated West Aurora, 28-14; Richards lost to Lincoln-Way North, 30-29.

The skinny: Geneva got a victory in Week 1, and that was the main objective. But the Vikings will look to continue a strong offensive attack that saw first-year quarterback Sean Chambers throw for three touchdowns in the opener. However, a much stiffer test in Richards awaits. It will be the Vikings’ first road game of the season, and they anticipate a much stiffer test this time around.

Speaking about Rosary’s shift to the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference, Royals coach Rachel Hartmann said, “It’s always nice to get a change in anything you do.”

NOTEWORTHY Rosary, St. Francis navigate GCAC

Rosary and St. Francis shifted to the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference this season, helping reconfigure a longstanding league that now features 22 schools spread across three divisions.

Conference officials considered enrollment among several other factors, but crossover games also are part of the schedule, which offers a refresher course in suburban and city geography.

Rosary’s road trips include visits to Loyola Academy, Fenwick and Regina Dominican. St. Francis heads to Mother McAuley and St. Ignatius during a fiveday stretch in October.

“It’s always nice to get a change in anything you do, just a fresh start,” said Royals coach Rachel Hartmann, who was married last month. “Still see a couple of the same teams we play throughout the season in nonconference. But we’re not trying to stress it too much.

The travel, it is what it is. Other schools will be traveling far to come see us, so I don’t think it’ll be too much of a

difference.”

St. Francis counterpart Peg Kopec, whose team is eyeing a state championship four-peat, also minimized the affect of travel.

Kopec admitted the GCAC will offer “some tough games,” but offered good humor about the recent trend of conference realignment throughout the state.

“A little bit like a Chinese fire drill,” Kopec said. “Just everybody jumped around. Public schools, private schools, everybody.”

The GCAC has remained a relative constant through it all. Although league enrollment has fluctuated, the conference marked its 40th anniversary in the spring.

BC tweaks coaching lineup

Eleventh-year Burlington Central coach Marv Leavitt officially adopted the title of co-coach upon elevating Meghan Blahnik in her return to the program.

Still, his passion hardly has wavered despite the change.

“I just love the game,” Leavitt said.

“I love coaching, and I still feel like I have a lot of enthusiasm. I just feel very fortunate to still be part of coaching. I take nothing for granted and really just love it.”

Blahnik coached in the program’s lower levels in the early 2010s before moving to Texas. Now back in the Fox Valley, she serves as program director and travel coordinator for Top Flight Volleyball, a club with headquarters in Elgin and Lemont.

Trio boosts Knights’ attack

With recent graduate Ellie Dunn now swinging away for Ball State, Kaneland must fill an offensive void this season.

Enter senior returning starter Annmarie Franz at middle hitter and emerging outside hitters Jessie Weber (junior) and Katie Jablonski (freshman).

“This year, I feel we’re well-rounded and we can rely on anybody,” Knights coach Cyndi Violett said. “We’re all really good hitters, good players.”

HITTING REWIND What a whirlwind victory for Batavia on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs responded from a one-sided, first-set loss at Glenbard South to take the final two sets in thrilling fashion, providing an encouraging early result for a team that is indoctrinating several starters into the rigors of varsity volleyball. When the season is complete, this 14-25, 28-26, 26-24 win could add up to much more than one notch in the victory column.

COMING ATTRACTION It’s too soon to tell whether Tuesday’s St. Charles North at Geneva match will decide the Upstate Eight Conference River Division winner, but early indications are that it will play a pivotal role.

Both sides boast veteran, college-bound athletes at key positions and savvy coaching on the bench.

“We’re excited and very optimistic about the season,” North Stars coach Lindsey Hawkins said.

‘Scrappy’ Knights can’t stop Marian

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kanelandvolleyball hung with Marian Central for most of Thursday’s 25-17, 25-23 nonconference loss.

A pair of runs – against a team that just defeated threetime defending Class 3A state champions St. Francis – was pivotal to the outcome.

“We knew it was going to be tough playing against [a team that just beat] the thirdranked team in the nation,” Kaneland coach Cyndi Violett said. “To play two tough games with them all the way through and to not roll over was pretty

good.”

Kaneland (3-3) actually held a 14-10 lead in Game 1, which forced Marian Central coach Laura Watling to call a timeout.

“They’re a very scrappy team and they had us moving and running,” Watling said. “It took us a while to get a push, and we got it especially behind the service line. We served tough, and that kind of turned into some opportunities that we were able to capitalize on because it was hard to pull away.”

The Hurricanes responded with seven straight points, with a pair coming on serves

from Noah Cetera that tipped the top of the net and fell to the court untouched.

“Sometimes you have to have a little luck,” Watling said. “You get a couple lucky bounces and feel like it’s a little unfair sometimes, but that’s the nature of the game too.”

Marian Central dominated the net, keeping the Knights off-balanced with a variety of dumps, kills and mis-hits.

“They can put the ball down really well and it was hard for us to pick up,” Kaneland senior Hollie Fedderly said. “They’re a great team, a real power-hitting team. We just need to close our blocks and get some of our

passes up.”

Marian Central (3-0) used a run midway through Game 2 to pull away. Tied at 11, the Hurricanes scored six straight points, with Rachel Giustino (10 kills, four blocks), Lauren Hanlon and Cetera doing most of the attacking. McKayla Wuensch had 19 assists.

A block from senior McKenzie McMullan sparked a late Kaneland run to cut its deficit to 23-21, but Guistino answered with a pair of kills to finish off the Knights.

“We practice a lot of smart shots so we were trying to keep them guessing and keep them honest, really,” Giustino said.

“We were super focused coming in after a big game against St. Francis and just took that momentum right back into this game.”

The Knights might have been cooled off a bit by the Hurricanes, but they’re off to a good start, having claimed second in last weekend’s Wheaton North Invite.

“In the second game the girls only had six unforced errors so I can’t ask for anything better than that,” Violett said. “What I love about this team is they stay focused and never give up. They’re a don’twant-to-die team and we’ll play through until that 25th point.”

The skinny: A fast start will be as key for Marmion as any team this week. The Cadets are trying to right a ship that saw them in a 14-0 hole with halftime looming in Week 1 against Plainfield Central. While all is good, record-wise, at Marmion after quarterback Johnny Tate helped awaken the offense and carry the Cadets to a victory, coach Dan Thorpe would like a bit of a different start this time around.

However, studying film often plays a big part in game planning for your opponent.

The trip to Indiana will provide an interesting matchup as the Cadets and Thorpe really don’t know too much about their opponent in Guerin aside from their record of 0-1 after a 34-0 shut out in Week 1.

But “we won’t be taking any team for granted at any point this season” is something Thorpe has said a number of times and while there may be a feeling-out process in the first few drives, the Cadets feel Marmion (1-0) at Guerin, confident with their game plan Ind. (0-1), 5 p.m. Saturday to head back into Illinois with a Last week’s results: Marmion 2-0 record.

The skinny: After watching film of Lincoln-Way Central, Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly thought his team was going to be playing against themselves today. Fedderly said the Knights are a very similar team to Lincoln-Way Central as both team are strong, physical and, most importantly, a balanced team. Lincoln-Way Central is also the Knights.

While Kaneland likes to throw different defensive looks at teams, Fedderly said that LW-C will do the same and try to give quarterback Jake Marczuk constant variety of formations.

“This game will be a big test for us,” Fedderly said. “They come off as a very good football team and this is a very, very good Week 2 matchup for us. I think we’re prepared and ready to go and are really looking forward to this matchup.”

Extra point: Marczuk had four touchdowns runs in Week 1, the longest of which was a 23-yard scamper. The senior quarterback also had 315 yards of total offense.

GIRLS SWIMMING St. Charles North 98, Naperville North 86: At. Naperville, St. Charles North defeated Naperville North in the nonconference dual meet.

Extra point: This is the first time in four seasons, since the 2011-12 season, that the Cadets have traveled out of state for a game. In fact, that game four years ago was also against Guerin.

Dixon (1-0) at Burlington Central (0-1), 7 p.m. today

Last week’s results: Dixon won by forfeit over Clemente; Burlington Central lost to Hampshire, 27-9.

The skinny: Burlington Central got off to a slow start in its opener against Hampshire. The Rockets allowed 27 straight points before tacking on a late touchdown.

Another challenge awaits, as Dixon travels to Burlington Central this week, as Jason Newburger looks for his first win as head coach. The Rockets won’t have much film on Dixon as its opener was won by forfeit, so today will be the first game it plays this season.

Extra point: The Rockets actually led in their opener, 3-0, after Cole Tecza’s 25-yard field goal with 5:35 remaining in the first half. BC took that lead into halftime, before allowing a 20-point third quarter.

The two played last season, with Geneva edging Richards, 22-19. Without playmakers Daniel Santacaterina and Pace Temple this time around, Chambers and senior receiver Jack Wassel will play a huge role in this one.

Richards will not only have last year on its mind, but the Bulldogs lost a tough, one-point game to Lincoln-Way North in Week 1 and are playing on their home field for the first time today.

Time of possession could play a big role in this one, as Geneva and coach Rob Wicinski will look to get off to a fast start to try and take the Richards crowd out of the game traveling to Oak Lawn for this one. Expect the Vikings to clean up some Week 1 mistakes that allowed West Aurora to hang around and make that game more interesting that Geneva would have liked.

Extra point: Richards’ school enrollment, 1,657, is the lowest among teams of Geneva’s schedule this season, but could provide one of their stiffest challenges of the season.

The skinny: St. Charles North played about as strong a first half as coach Rob Pomazak could have asked for. The North Stars led 30-3, and still held on for the victory despite scoring no points in the second half. Bartlett will present a much bigger challenge with its attack. “At times they have all 11 guys in the box,” Pomazak said. “They have a good power run game that we’ll need to stop, but they can also spread you out if needed. So it’s going to be a good test for us.”

The Hawks air attack numbers were the ones that popped out the most in their Week 1 loss to Conant as quarterback Brenner Wallace was 28 for 39, passing for 314 yards. Expect this game to be one of the more physical Week 2 matchups on the docket.

Extra point: Despite the strong first half in Week 1, and a 15-point victory, the North Stars were outgained by Schaumburg in total offense, 359-311. There were also no turnovers in the game.

Letting go of a good man – the best man Best man. There are many ways to appreciate and apply this designation.

Best man for the job? Most accomplished actor? Winner of a competition? And then, there is – to me – the classic designation: close friend standing next to the groom at a wedding. He is there in so many ways. He cares. He is the best man.

Phillip and I lost our best man this week. Carl Bergquist had moved to North Carolina where he passed away.

Services were held locally.

My health issues kept me away from greeting his large, blended family and – particularly – his loving wife, Sharon, who was Sharon Holtz when we probably met on the playground at Shelby School. Yes, she was my matron of honor. (Always thought that title should

We had eloped to Madison, Wisconsin. It was a football Saturday.

Carl drove us downtown to pick up the license, which was taped to the door of the closed office of the county clerk. Then on to the Methodist student center near the stadium.

Looked like the young pastor was more into ski trips than weddings because when he looked at me, he addressed me as “Phillip.” It was probably Carl who flashed his man-of-authority signal for the young man to suck it up

So, at the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month, we took note of the armistice designation (no more fighting, both sides lay down arms).

A few hugs and then off to Camp Randall Stadium: Badgers vs. MSU. I think Carl enjoyed hearing me brag that we had 80,000 people at our reception and a 200-piece band that played both the “Chicken Dance” and the “Beer Barrel Polka.”

I still appreciate how he would say, “Yeah,” with a laugh attached. (By the way, the game ended in a tie; sort of carrying out that no one guy wins. Kind of Carl’s style, too.)

There are not many who can claim this: Carl brought our dog, Underdog, into his proud manhood.

When the puppy left to explore the neighborhood, he came back to us in the front seat of a squad car. The dog was not proud of himself, and he tried to wag his tail and urinate at the same time, but just kind of squatted in the grass.

Carl took the dog aside and in his gentle way taught him the gentlemanly way to stand on three legs and lift the other. Typically, Carl would have a useful and enduring solution. As a good man, he would not wait to be asked, just as the best man would do.

The annual 5K family fun run and walk will begin at the Peg Bond Center, 151 Island Ave., Batavia, and continue along the Fox River loop in honor of a loved one.

Participants walk or run to remember those who have died, celebrate the life of a loved one and honor those facing a life-threatening illness.

After the walk, lunch will be catered by Enticing Cuisine in Batavia, and a free drawing

A memory board will be on display at the event where walkers can post photos and mementos of their loved ones, and personalized badges will be given to all walkers honoring their loved one. There also will be an opportunity to make memory stones in remembrance of a loved one.

Memory changes are inevitable with old age Dear Doctor K: What kind of memory changes am I likely to experience as I get older? Why do these changes happen?

Dear Reader: Many people begin to notice changes in their powers of recall around the age of 50. You may have to rack your brain to remember a name or word that is familiar to you. You may find it increasingly difficult to divide your attention among more than one activity or source of information. And you may get more easily distracted than when you were younger.

You’ll notice that different kinds of memory decline with age. These include episodic memory (which stock you sold last year from your retirement account), semantic memory (facts, such as the year World War I started) and spatial memory (such as the directions to a new location). Changes in the brain may be to blame.

Storing memories is a threestep process. In the first step, your brain acquires an experience. It does this by encoding the memory of that experience. That short-term memory is temporarily stored. Then it is consolidated into a more lasting memory. The last step in the memory process is retrieval. To recall a memory, your brain must reactivate the

I think of it in terms of what happens with your computer.

You type information into the microprocessor or central processing unit – the “thinking” part of the computer, or “consciousness.” That typed information is the “experience.” The thinking part of the computer then sends the information to a temporary storage area, random-access memory (RAM). Then it is sent to long-term memory – the “C drive.” When that information needs to be retrieved, the microprocessor goes and finds it on the C drive and pulls it back into consciousness.

(I hope any brain scientists that may be reading this column will forgive me this oversimplification.)

Changes take place in the brain as we age. These changes can undermine the encoding, consolidation and retrieval of new information. For example, as we age, we lose neurons in the hippocampus, a brain area involved with memory processing.

In another change, structures on

the surface of neurons that allow them to communicate with one another may stop functioning normally.

These changes make it harder to concentrate. As you age, you learn information more slowly and may not absorb as much detail. You may have more trouble recalling information because you didn’t fully learn it in the first place. (The memories that last are those that you paid the closest attention to when you formed them.)

In addition, executive function, which involves the overall regulation of thinking and behavior, declines with age. These higher-order processes are what enable us to plan, sequence, initiate and work toward some goal.

These changes may sound disturbing, but they don’t impair your ability to function effectively. Your ability to make sense of what you know and to form reasonable arguments and judgments is well-preserved. Moreover, the wisdom that you’ve gained from experience over the years remains unscathed.

He is a recreational user of cocaine, and he says he is not addicted to it and only uses it when he is at home in his apartment and does not have to drive anywhere. Luke says that he can stop anytime he wants to, or if I feel strongly about it and want him to stop. I really would rather he quits completely, but I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to run his life by demanding that he stop using it. What should I do?

– Kelly, Las Vegas Dear Kelly: If there’s anything to be “demanding” about, it’s the cessation of cocaine use.

The drug is a life-destroyer. It’s as addictive as they come and causes the physical, emotional and spiritual deterioration of the user. For many addicts, the only way out is death.

So, by all means, ask – demand – that Luke stop using cocaine immediately. I hope he will, but I fear, despite his assurances to the contrary, that he’s already hooked and unable to quit on his own. Most regular users need special assistance to become cocaine-free.

Dr. Wallace: My parents are divorced. My dad is re-marrying in a few weeks, and my mom is also in a couple of months.

My mom told me that after she gets married we will move to another town. My best friend wants me to stay here and live with my dad because she will miss me. I know I will miss my friends, but my mom wants me to live with her and I want to.

In bridge, bidding decisions can be tricky – as in this deal – and there are 13 tricks in the play. What do you think of this auction? How should the play go in five clubs after West leads the diamond 10? Did West have a more effective opening salvo?

The given auction occurred when the deal was originally played. South was a tad nervous in overcalling two clubs, for fear that it would be passed out. But he thought that unlikely given his heart void. West might have raised diamonds. Then North had a tricky decision. With 5-5 in the majors and the useful club king, she did not want to pass, but had only eight points. What would you have done?

I think North should have bid two spades, the higher-ranking of two five-card suits first. If she had, maybe she would have ended in four or more spades. Note that six spades fails if East, after cashing the diamond ace, shifts to a heart.

North, though, preferred to show her stronger suit. Then South bid what he hoped he could make.

East won the first trick with his diamond queen and shifted to a trump. Declarer won in the dummy, played a spade to his queen, trumped a diamond, ran the spade jack, ruffed a heart, drew trumps, and took 11 tricks, losing two diamonds.

West would have done better to lead a trump, which would have killed the contract – but that was tricky to find.

Section 3: Transfers from one appropriation of any amount specified for any object and purpose, not affecting the total amount appropriated may be made at any meeting of the Board by ordinance enacted by 2/3 vote of all the Trustees. By a like vote, the Board may by ordinance make appropriations in excess of those authorized by the budget in order to meet an immediate unforeseen emergency.

Section 4: The Board has a Special Reserve Fund and the unexpended balances from the proceeds received from library taxes may be accumulated in the Special Reserve Fund.

Section 5: The Secretary of the Geneva Public Library District is hereby authorized and directed to publish this Ordinance at least once in a newspaper of general circulation in the district.

Section 6: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect after its passage, approval and publication as provided by law.
