The Quad groundbreaking brings promise of new vitality

CHARLES – A September sun shone brightly Wednesday on a parking area in what is now the former Charlestowne Mall, as officials of The Krausz Companies Inc. and St. Charles officials dug into a line of dirt – the official, though ceremonial, groundbreaking of The Quad St. Charles.

It represented the next step in the planned rebirth of the mall into a gathering place of restaurants and new tenants. Krausz bought the mall in November for $9.5 million and plans a grand opening in spring 2016.

President and CEO Ron Krausz said the company has come a long way, but it still has a long way to go.

“Every journey begins with a single step,” Krausz said.

“We have so much more to go.

And we look forward to having the same relationship we have had with the city that was so helpful in getting us this far to see us all the way through – and with the community – to see us all the way through to completion.”

Quoting from the city’s news release about the groundbreaking, Krausz said, “This is the first of many milestones,” “And I think that’s really true,” Krausz said. “This is the first, really public milestone that we have here. It is important to all of us. It is the first step where we can begin to see concrete change here, and it’s the first step of many concrete changes. It’s going to take a while. We’re going to have a lot of them.”

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said the City Council and staff worked with the Krausz Company to help the process up to the groundbreaking.

“Public meetings, review and drawings have given way to bulldozers and movement of earth,” Rogina said. “Krausz Company must be recognized for its vision, careful planning and, most importantly, its investment and trust in our community.”

“There is so much to accomplish here to restore, revive and renew this mall – but so much has already been accomplished in the past year,” Rogina said.

Rogina praised the company for meeting with city officials and residents whenever asked – including reviewing input from middle schoolers.

“The final product will be the end of the story and the beginning of the story with a book of successes at their back,” he said. “We look forward to the Krausz Company’s latest creation, The Quad of St. Charles, becoming one of its finest jewels.”

Krausz said he would not say how much the project ultimately will cost.

“There’s too many moving parts here, and in several months there will be less moving parts – but it is a very significant investment,” Krausz said.

As to new tenants, Krausz said none would allow him to identify them.

“We are very close to some very strong promotional tenants that will help anchor, we believe, other tenants coming back into the mall,” Krausz said. “The leasing process is going to be the longest and

most in flux. It’s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.”

Though spring 2016 is a firm date for a grand opening, Krausz said he was not sure how the Chicago area weather might affect the construction process.

As to whether the carousel would remain in the redeveloped mall, Krausz said he didn’t know, though many people – himself included – have said they would buy it if they had somewhere to put it.

“It’s very possible it will not be kept,” Krausz said. “I don’t have a buyer for the carousel at the moment. ... It’s beautiful.

Either we find a way that it works in the mall – or it’ll find a home somewhere, that’s for sure.”

In May, aldermen approved a $20 million 50-50 sales tax revenue sharing plan for the new portion of the mall, a partnership to help the company make costly upgrades.

St. Charles 5th Ward Aldermen Maureen Lewis and Ed Bessner praised the Krausz company for proceeding with the project.

“I think it’s going to bring back some economic vitality to our city,” Lewis said. “And it will be a catalyst to get other projects going, like in the 5th Ward, that old St. Charles Mall.

But I think with this, something had to start. And I appre-

ciate the Krausz company that took the leap and is doing this for our city.”

The St. Charles Mall east of Randall Road on Route 38, closed in 1995, was demolished in 2002. The 30-acre site has been vacant and awaiting redevelopment since.

“I think this shows St. Charles is ahead of the economic upturn,” Bessner said.

“It gives everybody a sense of understanding just as what we’ve done in the past to survive the downturn, with our sustainability initiatives, and staying ahead of the curve.

This is an example of us staying ahead of the curve again.”

NERVOUS ABOUT A TWITCH? Involuntary twitching of the eyelid (usually the lower lid), known as “myokymia,” tends to occur mostly in one eye among young, healthy individuals. The twitching, which may last from several hours to several days, is due to contractions of a portion of the “orbicularis oculi” muscle or other facial muscles. The twitching is commonly triggered by stress, caffeine, and lack of sleep. By reducing these factors, the twitching can often be eliminated. However, if the problem persists on a daily basis for two months or longer, treatment with an injection of Botox may eliminate it. If myokymia starts in one eyelid and spreads to other parts of the face, further examination is strongly recommended.

P.S. If Botox injections do not eliminate myokymia, “myectomy” (surgical removal of the eyelid- and brow-squeezing muscles) may be required in severe cases.

Kaneland interim superintendent: I’m ‘invested in the district’

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Renee Goier smiled Wednesday morning as she sat at her new desk, saying she was happy to start her job as Kaneland’s interim superintendent.

Goier, a Sugar Grove resident, was unanimously approved Tuesday night by the Kaneland School District 302 Board. She will be paid $80,000 for 100 days of work. She most recently worked as superintendent at Deerfield School District 109. After she retired, she moved to Sugar Grove.

It is the second time Kaneland has hired an interim superintendent to replace Jeff Schuler, who left the district for Wheaton Warrenville District 200. Last week, the board hired Ken Sorrick on an interim basis, but Sorrick resigned the next day. School board member Tony Valente voted against Sorrick’s hire, and Sorrick indicated that action and Valente’s remarks and demeanor as the reasons he resigned. Valente said he was challenging Sorrick and that Sorrick didn’t want to be challenged.

On Tuesday night, Valente said Goier was “just phenomenal.” Goier was praised by Cheryl Krauspe, the board’s president, as someone

On Wednesday morning, Goier said her interview with the board was “wonderful.”

She called it a “very positive experience.” She said that doesn’t mean she expects everyone to be in agreement at

all times. She said “respectful disagreement is part of any working group.”

“I expect to have lots of questions about the work I do,” she said. “I don’t expect to agree with every board member all of the time, nor do I expect them to always agree with each other.”

The search for Schuler’s permanent replacement will begin soon, but Goier will not be involved with the search.

Krauspe has said the school board will use a search firm to identify potential candidates.

On Tuesday night, Krauspe said Goier was a good fit because Goier had experience at

all levels of education. Goier said she started out as a high school teacher. After she had children of her own, she said, she became interested in the development of young children. Her doctoral degree is in reading. She became a principal in middle and elementary schools, and then an assistant superintendent before becoming the superintendent in Deerfield. Her grandchildren are in the Kaneland district, and Goier said she feels “invested in the district.”

She said she was contacted about the position, and she said it made sense, since she would want to be involved in some way.

“I chose to live here,” she said. “I’d better really love this community.”

In the 100 days she has in her role, she said she planned to do what she could to support the work that’s already underway at the district and “keep the district moving smoothly.”

“It’s already off to a great start,” she said.

She predicted it would be a positive experience, saying she already had been greeted by those in the Kaneland community, including students,

by Wednesday morning.

“We’re going to have a great time over the next 100 days,” she said.

Condo owners object to size of proposed redevelopment project

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Despite neighbors’ objections, aldermen this week approved an amendment to the North Riverfront Redevelopment Project to allow for an increase in the allowable floor area ratio on three lots.

The request came from ShoDeen Homes. ShoDeen submitted plans 10 years ago for a duplex to be built on one of the lots, but it never was developed.

When ShoDeen applied for a building permit earlier

this year, the building plans did not comply with the maximum allowable floor area ratio established in the planned unit development, officials said.

The single duplex would be 34 feet high, a foot lower than the maximum allowed, records show, and would be built on one lot.

After a public hearing last month, the Plan Commission unanimously approved the amendment to the planned unit development to increase the floor area ratio from 0.5 to 1 for the remaining four lots to be developed as duplexes.

A neighbor in the adjacent condos at 100 N. River Lane, Eric Weck, said the majority of the 40 condominium owners object to the size, preferring a single-family home instead.

“A single-family home would be the best alternative for the builder [to get a] return on investment and maintain integrity of the neighborhood,” Weck said.

“The builder suggesting that they would be able to possibly tie in to the drainage system at 100 North River is not something that can be considered,” Weck said. “The

current drainage system, at times, is unable to handle drainage as it currently exists. We currently have no reason to believe it will be adequately addressed in this structure.”

Another condo owner, Anne Stagno of 100 N. River Lane, also objected to the size of the building.

“Would you like to live there?” Stagno asked aldermen. “Can I sell you my unit?”

Officials said the plan will not go through until city engineer Brian Schiber reviews the plans, which includes ad-

dressing drainage.

“With respect to the engineering, ma’am, Mr. Schiber ... as an accredited and certified engineer, will have to sign off on all plans prior to approval for construction,” Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“It’s Mr. Schiber’s reputation on the line, as well. His signature is, in my humble opinion, the Good Housekeeping seal with respect to that development and all related engineering issues,” Burns said. “And, of course, Mr. Schiber represents the city of Geneva, so we’re all responsible.”

COVER STORY PEACEFUL END TO STANDOFF Geneva man surrenders to police, SWAT team after 90-minute incident

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Charges are pending against a 66-year-old Geneva man after a 90-minute standoff Wednesday afternoon with Geneva police officers and the Kane County SWAT team.

At 10:37 a.m., Geneva police responded to a house in the 200 block of Syril Drive after the man’s wife came to the Geneva police station reporting the couple had been in a verbal argument, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said. The woman told police that when she left the house the man had a handgun and she feared for his safety.

Officers responded to the area to set up a perimeter and attempted to make contact with the man inside the house. Geneva police officers and the Kane County SWAT team eventually were able to make contact with him and to safely bring him into custody.

“Everybody is safe,” Nash said after the situation was resolved peacefully. “That’s all that matters.”

Officers learned the man had a handgun in his possession and had discharged the weapon outside of his home.

They said the weapon discharge happened after his wife’s departure, but before Geneva police arrived at the scene.

“At this time we have every reason to believe it was on purpose,” Nash said in reference to the gun being discharged.

Nash had said it did not appear that the man tried to harm himself.

Nash said the man’s name is not being released since charges are pending through the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. The man also received medical attention for medical reasons not related to the incident, Nash said.

The incident caused a stir in the surrounding neighborhood. Jeff Johnson, a carpenter working on a nearby house, was texting his friends about the situation. Johnson

said he started seeing emergency vehicles arrive in the neighborhood around 11 a.m.

“The number of vehicles started building steadily,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he did not see

what happened, noting he had been working inside most of the morning.

Nash said information about the incident would be released as it becomes available.

ELBURN – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has a full-time opening in its operations and maintenance department for a preserve maintenance worker.

The position is based in the district’s south operations division, within Grunwald Forest Preserve on Main Street Road in Elburn.

Duties include a wide variety of assigned tasks required to protect, preserve, interpret, operate and maintain district property.

Applicants must be 18 or older with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

GENEVA – Festival of the Vine kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday in downtown Geneva, featuring 18 wines and showcasing 23 local restaurants.

With names such as Unbridled Pinot Noir by Wild Horse and Thorny Rose Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, the wine list also features Dreaming Tree Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a collaboration of musician Dave Matthews with a California winemaker. Restaurants offering small portions of their wares at the Flavor Fare include guacamole by Bien Trucha, a meatball sandwich

by Firehouse Pizza and Grill, barbecue smoked sandwich by Nobel House and award-winning steak chimichurri tacos from Sergio’s Cantina.

“If there are restaurants you’ve never tried but want to, now is the time to do it,” Geneva Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Laura Rush said. “Friday and Saturday night by far are the busiest – as

it’s the weekend – with wall-towall people.”

The three-day festival is from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

It is expected to attract about 75,000 people, Rush said.

“The weather is looking good, too – nice 70-degree weather,” Rush said. “We have some new bands and some favorites returning that everyone enjoys.”

The festival also features wine tasting and sampling at The Little Traveler, Fiora’s, Preservation Bread and Wine, Galena Cellars, Geneva Wine Cellars, SavWay and Wildwood.

Also featured is a craft show with more than 75 vendors at Third and Campbell streets, a fall flower market presented

by Geneva Ace Hardware and demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday of cooking and decorating for fall, Rush said.

Clark said the door took about a weekend to upcycle.

Kane County Board to act on riverboat casino grants

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Forty-one nonprofits and local governments – including Batavia MainStreet, the Geneva History Center and the village of Elburn – are poised to split more than $1 million in riverboat casino funds.

“I wish we had $2 million or $3 million to allocate,” board member John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said in the Executive Committee meeting Wednesday.

The Kane County Board is expected Tuesday to vote on those allocations for fiscal year 2014, as well as more than $4 million in 2015 riverboat allocations for county projects.

The $1,000,963 dedicated to non-county projects had been pared down from more than $3 million in requests, said Hoscheit, who chairs the Riverboat Committee.

When awarding funding, he said, the committee limited grants to $100,000 and tried to distribute the money evenly throughout the county.

Board member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, asked that the county fund one more organization – Joseph Corp. in Aurora.

Joseph Corp., which addresses affordable housing needs, requested $75,000.

Barreiro suggested using some of the $61,250 allocated to Batavia MainStreet to fund a grant for Joseph Corp. To give the corporation $15,000, Hoscheit recommended

taking $7,500 from Batavia MainStreet and $7,500 from the city of Aurora’s allotment for a park.

His motion was approved, 6-5.

Executive Committee members had few comments about the riverboat allocations for county projects.

The $4,031,778 will support Kane Kares, Fit for Kids, drug prosecution, the child advocacy center and, among other projects, a recycling

program.

About $50,000 was allocated to the county’s community outreach coordinator, a position currently held by Rick Nagel.

Nagel runs Kane County Connects, an initiative that intends to engage residents with county government and provide them with information.

Its online presence includes a WordPress site, an e-newsletter and accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

Nagel, who was hired as an independent contractor March 3, said Wednesday that his contract has been extended to Nov. 29.

He has three major goals for the next three months, he said. They are opening the WordPress site to all elected officials, offices and departments; building a presence on Google+, Pinterest and LinkedIn; and expanding the variety and sources of content, he said.

As Kane County Connects matures, board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said he would like it to include a physical presence at events held on county property.

Fallon was a former Democratic state legislator in Iowa. His group started the walk on March 1 in Los Angeles. The plan is to end it on Nov. 1 in Washington, D.C. He said the walk is to do more than raise awareness about a climate crisis, as he said most people already know about that. The goal is to inspire action.

“We’re kind of the Paul Revere of the climate crisis,” Fallon said.

A few dozen people have been marching in Fallon’s group, making stops along the way. Next will be a march to Wheaton. Fallon said it has been a grueling trip, and he has lost 24 pounds. He said it’s a serious mission, so he wouldn’t call the project a walk.

“When your country is in peril and you put on your uniform to defend it, it’s marching,” Fallon said. “The army doesn’t walk.”

He said some are embracing the message. Fallon said he was stopped by a truck driver who asked what the marchers were doing.

“I told him,” Fallon said. “And he said, ‘Good luck, buddy. You are on the right track.’ ” Mullin said the marchers were more than welcome at her farm.

She has causes, too, with a message that people should grow their own food. She said she has paid attention to causes and marches, as well, but it can be difficult to participate with her children involved in many activities.

“This is wonderful,” she said, adding that “it honors me to open up my farm for them.”

Kathy Munyon and Lauri Clark had a soft opening May 24 for Chrysalis Home Décor, 108 State Ave. in downtown St. Charles.

The retail store features a collection of furniture, clothing, art, furniture and conversation pieces that were renewed or upcycled.

“We have everything from shabby chic to sophisticated elegance,” Clark said, noting they also have male customers who usually buy an Army-themed bottle opener sold at the store.

Clark and Munyon first met about 10 years ago when their middle school-aged sons played for the same travel baseball team.

The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District might gain more territory at the expense of another fire district.

Voters this summer petitioned to disconnect land from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District and to add such territory to the Fox River district, according to court documents dated July 17.

Attorney Pat Griffin, who represents the Fox River district, said the territory is bound by LaFox Road to the east, Anderson Road to the west, Campton Hills Road to the south and Empire Road to the north, although some agricultural land is included just north of Silver Glen Road.

About 128 people signed the petition to disconnect, he said, but the number of residents in that area is around 3,000.

The petition is a mechanism for voters to put a question about the disconnection on the Nov. 4 ballot, Griffin said.

He said a judge had to hear the petition and determine several factors, such as whether the territory would receive comparable service from the Fox River district and whether the disconnection would cause serious injury to the Elburn district.

Kane County Circuit Judge David Akemann last week found that the conditions for transfer and disconnection were met, according to a court document dated Aug. 28.

“The Elburn FPD argues that the evidence showed that there would not be a proportionate adjustment to expenditures to match the loss of revenue,” according to the document. “In fact, very

The shadow of ‘dark money’ THE WASHINGTON POST Welcome to the 2014 fall congressional campaign finance bus tour. We hope you’re comfortable because what you are about to witness is breathtaking, and more than a little unsettling.

Rivers of fat-cat money are pouring into our political system; the peaks of hidden finance soar ever higher. It promises to be a wild ride.

As you get settled, a reminder of important milestones: In 2010, the Supreme Court opened the door to unlimited corporate, union or individual contributions to groups that keep just enough distance from candidates to claim they are “independent.” This April, the court eliminated an overall limit on how much donors could give to candidates, parties and various other committees over the course of an election cycle. Under Chief Justice John Roberts, the court has demolished some of the barriers to big money in national politics.

At the same time, political operatives are ramping up organizations to pump the bucks into campaign coffers. There are tax-exempt groups that are ostensibly “social welfare” organizations under Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code but manage to spend a lot of money on politics and are permitted to keep their donors secret.

Also increasingly seen are super PACs that can raise and spend money freely and are supposed to keep their distance from candidates, except now they are becoming increasingly focused on single candidates in campaigns, and testing the very definition of “independent.”

The admixture of court decisions and campaign finance practices will be on full display. The Post’s Matea Gold and Tom Hamburger reported this summer the latest must-have feature in this year’s midterm elections is a super PAC funded by a rich friend or relative. Two years ago, we suggested these super PACs could be put out of their misery by legislation sponsored by Reps.

David Price, D-North Carolina, and Chris Van Hollen, D-Maryland, and it is still a good idea.

There are more of these superbeasts than ever.

Meanwhile, the well-heeled, tax-exempt 501(c) (4) groups are also casting a long shadow over the fall campaign. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, so-called dark-money spending in the midterms will easily exceed the spending records set in the last presidential election. The Internal Revenue Service is working on new regulations governing these groups and should force them into the sunshine or put them out of business.

Wanna hear a secret about college?

There’s a secret I just found out, something all college freshmen will never tell you: The beginning of college is just like high school.

In the past two weeks, I have done at least one get-to-know you game every day. Even though I’m an adult, it’s just as hard to come up with an “interesting fact” about myself on the fly. I’ve asked people what their name and/or major is approximately 1,000 times. I definitely haven’t personally met 1,000 people, so I’m pretty sure I’ve been talking to the same people way more than once.

For the honors program, I have to attend a workshop sometime in the next two weeks to talk about making my four-year plan.

As adults, we’re not ready to actually make it on that day, but we’re ready to talk about it. We’ve already read about our four-year plans during our summer orientation, where we checked off where we were on a chart of our time in college. After we attend this very important workshop, we

LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman will set up an individual appointment with our advisor to finally put pen to paper. As if that weren’t enough, my proseminar for English majors class is going to spend a whopping three weeks mapping out our time at Illinois State University.

While I appreciate the fact there are so many people who are willing to help me make the most of my time in college, I know I’m able and ready to take the next steps in my education. Being an honors student, I feel especially ready to take on this responsibility.

Even some of my other classes seem to be starting up slowly. I’ve had to take three or four quizzes about information on my syllabi.

This stuff is sophomore-in-highschool stuff at best. After a long and repetitive Welcome Week,

I felt pretty much settled into college life, ready to delve into the intense novels, challenging geology labs and complicated Latin passages. Instead, I still feel like I’m waiting for things to get into full swing.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a few differences from the “good old days” in high school. Being around new people in my dorm 24/7 is a big adjustment for an introvert like me. It’s also weird to be going to different classes and doing different things every day of the week.

I’m sure in a few weeks, I’ll be super busy all the time. But in this moment, I can’t wait for things to really start. Instead of just talking about college, I want to actually do it!

Rivers Edge Bar and Grill replaces O’Brien’s in Batavia

Rivers Edge Bar and Grill recently opened at 12 N. River St. in what formerly housed O’Brien’s Pub and Grill.

“We serve classic American bar food made fresh and the right way,” said Richard Kaniuga, the restaurant’s executive chef.

Jody and Joel Hutchison, who also own White Tavern in Naperville, opened Rivers Edge earlier this year.

“The bar has a lot of history,” Rivers Edge night manager Jason Hunley said.

“It was a way for them to step in and be part of the community.”

According to Hunley, the building dates back to the 1800s and has been a bar since the early 1900s.

Those who were regular customers at O’Brien’s will find that Rivers Edge Bar and Grill is sporting a new look. Along with the restaurant having new tables and chairs, the floors have been redone.

In addition, the bar seating has been expanded and additional big screen television sets have been brought in. Rivers Edge also has an expansive outdoor patio.

In addition, Rivers Edge features a new menu. Those who attended last weekend’s Batavia Block Party had the chance to sample the restaurant’s food.

Kaniuga is a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu culinary program at the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago and previously worked at Clara’s Fresh Pasta and other restaurants in the Chicagoland area. Rivers Edge’s menu includes a wide variety of burgers, sandwiches, wraps and wings.

That includes the blue bacon burger served with crispy bacon, crumbled Gorgonzola cheese, tomato, grilled onions

and mesclun mix, all on a pretzel bun with garlic mayonnaise; a grilled threecheese sandwich with American, cheddar and pepper jack cheese on grilled sourdough bread; and the cilantro chicken wrap with grilled chicken, cilantro, lettuce, mixed with fresh salsa, and a touch of chipotle mayonnaise.

Rivers Edge serves hand-pressed, half-pound burger patties. For vegetarians, Rivers Edge also serves a portabella mushroom sandwich.

“It’s been a popular item,” Kaniuga said.

North River Street features several restaurants. Hunley said he hopes Rivers Edge adds to the vibrancy of North River Street and downtown Batavia.

“I think whatever is great for one business is great for all of them,” Hunley said.

Rivers Edge also showcases local entertainment, including an open mic night on Tuesdays and a monthly Slam Jam, where local musicians play together.

“It’s a great way for artists to showcase skills and play off each other,” Hunley said.

Rivers Edge also has a trivia night.

Kara Silva: Well, first off, congrats on the show. Are you pretty excited for it to premiere?

Ed Beaulieu: Yeah, you know what? I am. Because we’ve spent so much time filming over many, many months, talking about it, doing all the filming, traveling all over the place and, now, all of a sudden, we’re actually going to see something.

I’m also a little bit nervous because you don’t know how it’s going to turn out. We don’t see all the footage and everything; we see little bits and pieces.

Silva: How did the idea for “Pond Stars” the TV show come about?

Beaulieu: It actually had started years ago.

[Aquascape’s] main business is the design, [building] and installation of water features throughout the Chicagoland area, but we also have another element of our business, which is the manufacturing and training of the people for the products that we install.

So, with that, we have always done training videos, books, magazines, articles, blogs, Facebook, Youtube [and] that went out to landscape contractors and professional installers throughout North America.

Somebody – a production company – had actually watched one of those videos; they found them on Youtube and liked what they saw. This happened years ago, and nothing happened.

This happened multiple times. And then finally about two years ago, another production company came to us with the same exact story.

We said, “Yeah, no problem, we’ve heard this before.”

We made another video with them, and – this time – the timing was right or they put it in the right person’s hands or whatever, and we ended up

getting contacted by a network.

Silva: What do you want people to know about this show? What’s the premise?

Beaulieu: The premise of the show is pretty simple. What we’re doing is we’re trying to take ordinary people in typical suburbia and we’re trying to give them a wildlife experience.

So, by adding that aquatic element, putting in some sort of a decorative water feature or small pond, you will bring in a lot of life from the surrounding area. It’s turning it into this little microworld in your backyard.

Silva: How did you land a spot on “Pond Stars”? Were you always in the running and always a part of it or did you have to audition?

Beaulieu: I was always in the running, and I think it’s because I was one of the first people hired [at Aquascape] and I had designed and built over 1,500 water features throughout the world. So, between Greg, Brian and myself, we have the most experience in the company in doing this.

Silva: What is your role on the show?

Beaulieu: So, there are three main characters: Greg is the owner – he’s the boss guy;

Brian is the foreman, so he is in charge of the installations; and, my degree is in zoology, so I have that wildlife background, and I specialize in aquatic biology.

So, I am known as the scientist on the show.

Silva: So, you’re the brains of the operation?

Beaulieu: [Laughs.] Yeah, well all three of us have a lot of brains, but I kind of take it to a science, nerdy level, I guess you could call it.

Silva: “Pond Stars” is a reality TV show. Were you a fan of reality TV before making your own show?

Beaulieu: Oh, yeah. Absolutely.

Reality TV is the norm, so there is such a diversity of programs on TV right now. You can literally find a TV show on anything that you’re interested in, and because of my background in science and everything, I am a National Geographic junkie so I was thrilled when I found out we were with National Geographic.

Silva: Is the show scripted?

Beaulieu: It is not. It’s not scripted at all.

Silva: What was the filming experience like? Was there anything that you

learned about making reality TV that you didn’t initially realize before going into it?

Beaulieu: Oh my God, pretty much everything. I mean we had no clue. We’re going into this with our basic understanding of how we would film one of our training videos. But when you have a full blown production company ... there are more of them on the job site than there are of us actually working and installing the features.

They’re trying to weave a full blown story out of what they see. We’ll have 100-plus hours of footage for one episode, so how they can condense all of that footage down to one episode – to me – is a daunting task.

Silva: Is any of the show filmed in the Kane County area?

Beaulieu: It is. There are multiple things filmed in Kane County. ... I would say out of any other place in the country, we have more filmed in Kane County than anywhere else.

Silva: Why do you think people will be interested in watching a show like this? What will they get out of it?

Beaulieu: In today’s world everybody has a very hectic life, high stress jobs, and we’re always running to take the kids to ball games, soccer practice, whatever. ... There are direct correlations between stress relief and having an aquatic element.

The other thing is, during the construction process in suburbia, we’ve had to – unfortunately – destroy or move and displace a lot of local wildlife.

So, all of these animals that normally live in Kane County have been displaced and pushed out to the outer fringes.

So, by us doing these little backyard oases, we’re inviting some of that wildlife back in, which I think is very important.

ational Geographic’s WILD is bringing nature back with its new series “Pond Stars,” a show that plucked its title characters right out of Kane County.

In its first season, the show follows local water-feature specialists Greg Wittstock (“The Boss”), a Wayne resident and owner of St. Charles-based Aquascape – a supplier of water gardening supplies – and longtime co-workers Ed Beaulieu (“The Scientist”) of Sugar Grove and Brian Helfrich (“The Foreman”) of Downers Grove, as well as new guy Chris Hanson of Naperville.

Filmed locally, and in other U.S. cities, “Pond Stars” aims to reconnect a digital-dependent society with nature by transforming dreary backyards into tranquil retreats. Cameras capture individual projects carried out by the Aquascape team, including an oasis at Kaneland High School, a zoo habitat project, a backyard remodel for a football-team owner and a healing garden for a cancer survivor.

“Pond Stars” premieres at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, on Nat Geo WILD. Features editor Kara Silva got a chance to chat with “Pond Stars” character Beaulieu about his role on the show, reconnecting with nature and his first foray in filming reality TV.

Winemaker promoted at Chateau Montelena Matthew Crafton knows he is part of history.

In June, he was promoted from assistant winemaker to winemaker at Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley, California. Even though Crafton ran the white wine program at Chateau Montelena, he becomes just the fifth winemaker in the history of the iconic winery.

His journey as winemaker begins with the 2014 harvest, which is challenged by the third straight year of severe drought in California. It gives him a chance to capture what Chateau Montelena does so well – tell the story of the vintage.

Winemaker spotlight Crafton thinks in terms of evolution rather than revolution.

“There’s no magical formula I received when I was promoted,” Crafton quipped. “There’s not a key to a locker with the 1973 formula. We look at every vintage as a challenge rather than a chance to replicate past success. We want to continually refine what we do and make more elegant and complex wines.”

That is exactly what Crafton plans to do with the 2014 vintage. Despite a three-year drought, the 2014 crop yields are only slightly lower than 2013. A rain storm arrived four weeks before bud break, but as winemakers around California have reported, the fruit is still of high quality. It just matured earlier this year.

“2014 looks like another great vintage,” said Crawfton, who added this year is similar to 2004. “I’m excited to get to sink my teeth into the program on a bigger scale.”

My first thought was, ‘Wow, this is awesome.’ For [Chateau Montelena CEO and Master Winemaker] Bo Barrett to have so much faith in me is humbling and exciting. It really got my blood flowing and reenergized me to think about the future.”

Napa Valley earthquake Pictures of shattered bottles and overturned barrels dominated my Twitter feed after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Napa Valley County the morning of Aug. 24. Adam Lee had the best plan to help wineries.

The owner and talented winemaker at Siduri took to social media and used his Twitter handle, @SiduriWines, to encourage his followers to buy a bottle of Napa Valley wine.

I bought Titus, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2010 ($45), a wine with deep purple color, very focused with fruit notes of strawberry and blackberry.

There’s cedar in the mid-palate, loamy earth and some ripe plum and dried cherry notes on the finish. It was a big wine for a Monday night, but it was for a worthy cause.

“Fortunately, the Chateau Montelena team is safe and we have not sustained any damages to our facility or inventory,” Montelena spokeswoman Sonia Meyer wrote via email. “Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to those in the valley who experienced the worst of the earthquake.”

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva boys golf team defeated St. Charles North, 155-170, Wednesday in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual at Mill Creek Golf Club.

Geneva’s Matt Fisher shot a one-under par 35 on his round, which led all scorers on the day.

“I made a lot of putts and got up and down a lot. … One-under on the back nine is one of my best (scores),” Fisher said.

Fisher eagled the 10th hole and birdied the 18th to score one-under while playing the back nine at Mill Creek.

Fellow senior Garrett Davis shot a 38, followed by teammates Andrew Abel and Spencer Sharpe, who both shot 41.

“The guys are really placing the ball well off of the tee. They’re getting it in position to score well,” Vikings assistant coach Bryan Knapp said.

Head coach Eric Hatczel was not in attendance due to parent night at Geneva.

The North Stars were led by the low score of Liam Smith, who shot a 40 on the day. He was followed by Jake Muehlschlegel and Tharyn Duncan, who shot 42 and 43, respectively. Their four-man score was rounded out by a 45 – which Hank Zimmer and Jarron Gandy both shot – giving North its team score of 170.

“We’re in a situation where we’re trying to get better every week,” North Stars coach Rob Prentiss said. “We’re trying to get the guys to make good decisions off the tee, and as you get more

skilled physically, the game becomes more of a mental challenge.”

Both coaches touched on how important the mental side of golf is for their teams.

“With a nine hole match…we really are preaching this year the mental aspects of the game. We want them to be fully dialed in on every shot,” Knapp said.

Ethan Dalton shot a 43 followed by Jake Peters with a 44 and Alex Lenski and Spencer Monroe with a 45 to round out the eight Geneva golfers.

Trevor Kurtzhals and Michael Staszcuk both shot 47, while Alex Gruber shot 51 for the North Stars.

“We’re young, inexperienced and we’re just trying to grow our mental game,” Prentiss said.

St. Charles North is back in action again today when it heads to Bartlett Hills Golf Course to face Elgin. The Vikings are off until next week when they face Streamwood at Streamwood Oaks Golf Course.

Veteran Batavia girls volleyball coach Lori Trippi-Payne won her 500th career match Saturday during a tournament at Plainfield North. This marks Trippi-Payne’s 28th season with the Bulldogs.

makes you feel good about the fact that I could be nowhere near [500] at this point if my kids didn’t have so much heart,” Trippi-Payne said. “The match I won 500 on, we were losing, 21-12, and we came back to win 25-23, and that just kind of shows you the kind of kids we have here. I’ve been very fortunate that way.”

Trippi-Payne’s continued zeal for the sport is evident to all who watch her on the bench on match days.

She said she’s open to coaching for several more seasons.

“That would be neat, to keep pushing onward to the next milestone, but when all is said and done, hopefully we just go out there and play well,” Trippi-Payne said.

North’s Anderson digs Demons St. Charles North’s front line boasts yet another Division I

recruit.

After North teammates Daley Krage (Northwestern) and Emily Carroll (Stetson for sand volleyball) made earlier college choices, outside hitter Claire Anderson on Tuesday offered her verbal commitment to DePaul.

Anderson attended a DePaul camp in July and visited campus on Thursday, when the 6-foot junior outside hitter received a scholarship offer.

“I visited a few schools but I was really focused on finding the right academic fit, so that made my pool of schools a little more narrow,” said Anderson, who intends to study clinical science. “DePaul was definitely at the top of my list.”

Anderson, who has been on the varsity since her freshman year, said she’s excited to know she’ll play college volleyball within a half-hour

of Krage.

“It’s actually really cool because we’ve been best friends since we’ve been 12 years old, so it’s going to be cool,” Anderson said.

“Maybe we’re not playing at the same school but we’re going to be playing nearby.”

For a good cause St. Charles North takes on visiting Naperville Central tonight, and North will recognize the month of September as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, according to North coach Lindsey Hawkins.

North will “join forces with Cal’s Angels to raise awareness and collect funds to donate to this awesome organization,” Hawkins wrote in an email.

Lori Trippi-Payne’s 500th career coaching win Saturday prompted plenty of reflection from the longtime Batavia coach, and not just about her lengthy tenure with the Bulldogs.

Trippi-Payne’s mother, the late JoAnn Trippi, was around to celebrate almost all of those wins, and those memories came flooding back in the aftermath of win No. 500, which came during the Plainfield North Invitational.

“I learned a lot about loyalty and a lot about sticking things out and staying loyal to my program, I learned a lot of that from my mom,” said Trippi-Payne, who is in her 28th season coaching Batavia. “She worked at the same place for 33 years and for most of those 33 years as a legal secretary. She just passed away in June, and I wish she could have seen 500, but I’m sure she’s up there.

“She had an accident in June, it was a sudden thing.

She had just retired, so [reaching the milestone] is a little bittersweet, but it also makes me realize I learned a lot from her about doing my best and sticking with a program and being loyal.”

Trippi-Payne said her mother loved to give her teams “a pep talk, win or lose,” and also attended numerous other volleyball matches in support of her grandchildren.

Trippi-Payne thought win No. 500 was fitting in that the Bulldogs had to scramble back in one of the games against Libertyville’s JV team in a match won by Batavia, 25-19, 25-23.

Kaneland grad Jordan Ginther is in her second year on the Purdue women’s soccer team. And after last year’s senior goalkeeper moved on from the program, it’s on Ginther now to step up and be a force in net. Both from a soccer perspective and a leadership one.

But leading loudly isn’t Ginther’s style. Though that doesn’t mean she’s leading any less.

“I felt like when I was at Kaneland and in Illinois, I was kind of expected to be a leader. Here, you just take on the role, and you just make it happen,” Ginther said. “You’re not expected to do it, you just do. It’s really interesting to see how people respond to how you choose to expose yourself to other players.

“I think they’ve responded pretty well. What they tell me is I’m more of a quiet leader and I lead by example, and that’s kind of the leader that I like to be. I just like to do my own thing, and if people see me work hard, then they work hard, as well. That’s how it should be.”

Entering tonight’s match at Marshall, former Kaneland goalkeeper Jordan Ginther of the Purdue women’s soccer team is 1-1-0 with nine saves on 10 shots. “Our coach, he wanted us to step it up this year,” Ginther said.

BATAVIA – Nora McClure lobbed the ball high over the net once, twice and a third time before smashing a forehand winner in the second set of an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 1 singles.

It was that kind of day for McClure and her Batavia girls tennis teammates as the Bulldogs defeated visiting Rosary Wednesday afternoon. Batavia won all four of its singles matches and dropped only the fourth doubles match in a 7-1 victory.

While all of the matches occurred simultaneously, McClure and her Royals counterpart, Maddy Deufel, were the first off the courts in just under a half-hour.

“I was just really consistent,” McClure said. “I was playing smart and getting all the balls back today. It gives me a lot of confidence to win over a good player like (Duefel) going into my next match.”

McClure’s success largely came from changing up the pace of play, trading volleys when she had to as well as playing the lob game at points to slow things down. Her serve was far from overpowering but it was evident that her tactics were frustrating Duefel.

Batavia coach Brad Nelson praised the intelligence and approach McClure displays each match and said it was a huge advantage to have a player of her caliber as his No. 1.

“She’s a player that sets the tone and isn’t going to make many mistakes,” Nelson said. “A lot of girls get frustrated playing her because they know they’re going to be in for a lot of long points. She’s a very steady player, grinds everything out and is very competitive. She doesn’t like to lose. She’s going to hit the shots that she needs to hit, shots that a lot of players wouldn’t want to hit in a match. They wouldn’t want to hit lobs or slow the pace down a little bit, but she’s a smart player that knows how to change the pace and get players playing her kind of game. She won 24 matches last year for a reason.”

The two most competitive matches of the day came on the doubles side. Batavia’s No. 1 pairing of Sydnee Unterberg and Julianne Robinson outlasted their Rosary counterparts, Megan Conlin and Alexis Thomas, in a three-set thriller. The Bulldogs won the first set, 7-5, and then dropped the second, 4-6.

“Going into the third set, we thought we had them,” Conlin said. “Then our shots weren’t going in, but it is what it is and we’ll just need to move on and learn from our mistakes.”

Thomas cited unforced errors as a key factor in dropping the third set, which the Bulldogs won, 6-4.

Rosary coach John Tsang gave credit to Batavia and said it outhustled his side. He said the match was a good chance to learn what needs to be improved in the immediate future.

“Going into this match, we knew this was going to be a good test and would give us a good benchmark of the things that we still need to work on,” Tsang said. “It was pretty evident that Batavia, give them all the credit, outhustled us. I think they outworked us and certainly played smarter tennis than we did. Today was a good opportunity for us to see what we have to work on and we will have some time, but the season goes fast so we’ve got to make some adjustments pretty quick.”

Sisters Rebecca and Natalie Bens pulled out the lone win for Rosary on the afternoon in No. 4 doubles, rallying to win their three-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Currently rehabbing a hamstring injury, Olt smacked 12 home runs in 72 games with the Cubs, which still was tied for the National League rookie league entering Wednesday. Olt, however, also batted .139 in that span, but was beginning to regain his hitting stroke in the minors before getting injured.

More Content Now New Orleans native Harry Connick Jr. was already well into his acting career when it got a boost with his role as genial aquarium honcho Dr. David Haskett in the mostly based-on-fact 2011 film “Dolphin Tale.”

Among Connick’s earlier credits were voicing the hipster Dean in “The Iron Giant,” playing Leo Markus on “Will & Grace,” and the bartender Daniel in “P.S. I Love You.” But it was the dolphin movie that gained him many new young viewers, most of whom had no idea that Connick had already reached veteran status in his pop-jazz singing career.

At a recent interview session for “Dolphin Tale 2,” the always-gracious Connick, still carrying that Louisiana accent, spoke about working in both of those worlds.

Ed Symkus: Is it easier to step back into the shoes of a character you’ve already played?

Harry Connick Jr.: I did a pretty considerable amount of research the first time around because I really wanted to know who this guy was. The second one was obviously much easier because I had done it before.

What was really strange is that it was the exact same set of circumstances as the first one: same city, same set, same cast, so it was very easy to kind of remind myself who he was.

But the first time I went and interviewed marine biologists and marine veterinarians, and I paid attention to how they looked.

I remember my wife saying, “Do you really want to wear those clothes and wear your hair like that?” And I said, “Yeah, I do, because that’s who these people are. They’re scientists, and they’re not really interested in anything but learning about these marine creatures.”

Symkus: How much were you trying to remain accurate and how much room did you have to embellish and make the role your own?

Connick: That was really [director] Charles Martin Smith’s area. Every single nuance of what happened in real life was thoroughly considered with regard to how it would be dramatized in the film.

So, that part was all about him. As a character, you’re working within the realm of what’s on the page. Was I able to sort of manipulate things and do things?

Sure.

As an actor you need to understand everything, so I would say to Charles, “Did this happen?”

And he might say, “Yeah, that happened, and that’s a person who actually did what you’re doing.”

Sometimes you’d be on the set and you wouldn’t know who was hired as an extra or a cast member, and who was actually on the scene when the real story went down. It was a weird kind of altered reality.

Symkus: Have you found your acting work and your singing work crossing over much?

Connick: What’s interesting to me is as you go through your career in the entertainment business, new people are being born and growing up, and becoming teenagers and young adults, and a lot of the people that came to know me through “Dolphin Tale” have no idea that I do anything else.

Now, that’s not a BAD thing. It’s cool!

I’m still making records and touring and stuff. And I’m not doing any more acting than I was doing 20 years ago. It all kind of ebbs and flows.

Symkus: What exactly is the status of your singing right now?

Connick: I’m working on a new record.

But we haven’t even gone in the studio yet. We’re just kind of putting the ideas together. As you know, there’s a lot of

downtime on a film set, and you can get a lot of stuff done in the trailer and the hotel. I’ve written entire records on a movie set, and then when the movie’s done you go in the studio and record it. Then when you finish that it’s time to promote the movie and then it’s time to tour. So, it all kind of works together.

Symkus: You also landed a nice spot as a judge on “American Idol.” Was that a good time for you?

Connick: That was great! I think no matter what genre of music you play, when you rack up a couple of years of experience, and you have your own point of view, no matter who comes in front of you, whether it’s a pop artist or a country artist, it’s not difficult to critique and help shape the young performers.

I mean, let’s face it, I’ve been here for a while, I’ve done it for a while, and I have a lot of experience. I’ve always been a big fan of the show, and it was a great opportunity.

Basically the job is sitting there, listening to music and telling people what you think about it. What’s not to like? I loved it.

Study on TV’s health effects not conclusive Dear Doctor K: Is watching TV worse for your health than any other activities that keep you from being active?

Dear Reader: We know that exercise is good for our health, and that too much inactivity is bad for our health. But does it make sense that watching TV is worse than other sedentary activities?

Actually, it may. My colleague Dr. Robert Shmerling is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He noted that a recent study shows watching a lot of TV is worse for your health than other activities that involve long periods of sitting.

The study Dr. Shmerling referred to enrolled more than 13,000 young and middle-aged adults. Researchers asked the study subjects how much time they spent watching TV, using a computer and driving.

During the study: • People who reported watching three or more hours of TV each day had twice the risk of death as those who watched less than an hour each day.

• People who spent the most time driving or using a computer did not have higher rates of death

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff than people who spent less time at these activities.

This study only showed a link between TV and early death. It was not designed to prove whether watching TV actually caused the higher risk of death. People who watch a lot of TV might also do a lot of other things that put their health at risk. They might be under a lot more stress, and TV might be an escape. They might be having trouble sleeping, or are sleep-deprived, and watching TV to try to go to sleep.

And what were the people eating while they watched TV? The study did not say. Three or more hours a day of eating a lot of cheese and nachos might not be the best thing for your health, regardless of what you were doing while you ate.

There were other limitations to this study. For example, people were asked about their activities only once, yet the study lasted years. The study participants’

activity level could have changed dramatically over the years of the study.

What’s more, this study looked at the impact of physical activity, body mass index and smoking on early death. But it did not take into account other factors (like blood pressure) that could have affected the results.

So, I’m not convinced that watching TV is itself hazardous to your health. To put it simply, I don’t plan to cut back on the time I spend with my shows! But just as there are some foods full of empty calories, there are some programs that are “empty TV.” There’s no doubt that substituting physical activity for empty TV would be good for your health.

Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise most days of the week, plus some muscle-strengthening exercises, will get you further down the road to good health than even the most heart-pounding TV drama.

Dr. Wallace: I’m wondering why many companies direct their advertising toward teens. Why do you think they do this since teens do not usually have a whole lot of cash to buy things? I know that I don’t, even though I get a small allowance. – Sara, Portage, Indiana Dear Sara: You are correct. Advertisers aim at teens because they have a certain amount of influence on family purchases. Teenage Research Unlimited found that 71 percent of all teens do some family shopping, with 4 percent doing almost all of it (with their parents’ money). And only 13 percent were told exactly what brand to buy.

This means that about 87 percent of the teens made a decision about which specific brand or label was going home with them.

Manufacturers are aware of teen buying power, and they also know that teens soon become adults, and if they buy Brand X as a teen, they will probably also buy it as an adult.

Dr. Wallace: Last night my boyfriend and I had a disagreement and he got really mad at me and slapped me really hard on the side of my face.

Dear Nameless: Instead of a credit card, why not find out if dad will allow you to have a debit card. But instead of borrowing money, a debit card will let you spend money put into a separate account.

As long as there is money in the account, you can use the card up to the amount available.

So four diamonds is stronger than five. Yes, North has only six points, but four trumps and a club void are great assets.)

In the play, West should have led the heart seven, top of nothing. Regardless, East should have played his eight at trick one, not the king. West would not have been underleading (leading low away from) the ace. East should have assumed that West had the heart jack.

The rest of the play was fine except that declarer should have drawn the second round of trumps a tad quicker.

Designing parents raid the dorm

The dream dorm room was just not happening.

Five years ago, Karen and Amanda Zuckerman hit the malls and big-box stores to decorate Amanda’s freshman dorm at Washington University in St. Louis. The offerings were ... well, underwhelming.

“She wanted something special,” Karen Zuckerman says. “She wanted a home away from home that reflected her style.” The mother and daughter cobbled together a cute-enough room, then did what any creative, enterprising family would do: They founded Dormify, an online dorm design business based in Rockville, Maryland.

College students will spend $48 billion this year (an average of $916 per person) on furniture, electronics, bedding and other supplies, according to the National Retail Federation. Then there are the families who take it to the next level: hiring a professional decorator to transform the typical college cell into a cozy retreat.

“Designers are doing individual rooms and calling us for products,” Zuckerman says. “It’s becoming a really big deal.”

The average dorm room – even at some of the most elite colleges and universities – is not only tiny, but also ugly: white paint, standard-issue furniture,

fluorescent lighting and nothing that requires nails in the walls. (Some don’t even have air conditioning, which creates another issue.) It’s a challenge for many millennials who have never shared a bedroom or bath and aren’t accustomed to roommates or going without.

Helicopter parents are not inclined to drop their darlings at the dorm entrance with two suitcases and cheerfully wave goodbye. Instead, they’re turning to their own interior designers or professional organizers, such as Rachel Strisik Rosenthal.

One of Rosenthal’s first jobs was putting together a dorm room for a female college sophomore at George Washington University. The student had a tendency to be unorganized and had a bumpy first year, so her parents hired the Bethesda, Maryland-based organizer to put together her dorm room in a way that helped her relax and study.

“They wanted her to feel comfortable,” Rosenthal says. “I’ve never been contacted directly by a student.

It’s usually the parent.”

After taking measurements, Rosenthal put the bed on risers to create storage room, revamped her closet, put in shelves and other wall storage, and reorganized her desk to keep track of assignments and other class materials.

that’s already high-end. More and more colleges are offering state-ofthe-art buildings with all the bells and whistles – larger bedrooms, private baths, elegant common lounges, flat-screen TVs, gyms, tanning salons, rock climbing walls ... well, you get the idea. The designer of Purdue University’s $52 million First Street Towers called it “essentially a hotel” for “helicopter parents who want to send their son or daughter to college campus but give them all the luxuries of home.”

In fact, the modern dorm rooms are often more beautiful than first apartments. Many universities and colleges, looking for ways to recruit promising students to their campuses, have turned over student housing to private developers who build and operate high-rise student housing.

The rooms cost a few thousand more than traditional dorms, but many students (and parents) are willing to splurge.

Of course, “there’s only so much you can do for a dorm room,” says Fischel – even a very, very nice dorm.

Although freshman and sometimes sophomores are typically required to live on campus, it’s still not good enough for some parents.

“They find a way to pull them out of a dorm and put them into an amazing apartment,” she says.

Of course they do.

The total cost for labor and materials? About $800.

The student was so pleased that she worked with the organizer four more times on other dorm rooms and then her first apartment. Dorms are now about 5 percent of Rosenthal’s business, with clients paying the $675 minimum for a combination of design and organization systems. That’s a relative bargain; she knows a professional organizer in New York who just moved a student into a dorm room – and the planning and design fees alone were $5,000.

This is almost an entirely female phenomenon, fueled by social media and increasingly sophisticated marketing to college students. Boys don’t really care what their rooms look like – they just want the TV and other electronics. (Dormify added a section this year for guys, but “that’s really targeted toward moms,” Zuckerman says.) Girls, on the other hand, create mood boards with pictures of their perfect space and trade ideas on Facebook and Pinterest.

Zuckerman says more mothers and daughters are doing this together, often with professional help, to create the first dorm room – one way of easing the separation anxiety. The

The expectation is that many of the pricier items will last for years and can be easily transferred to a small rental.

That’s one of the operating principles behind Zoom Interiors, an online design firm founded by GWU graduates Lizzie Grover, Beatrice Fischel and Madeline Fraser.

The three met as interior design students and launched an enterprise specializing in dorm rooms and smallspace decorating. They had helped their friends put together stylish dorm rooms, and going pro was the next logical step.

“I just got finished with a mom doing a son’s and daughter’s rooms,” Fischel says. The two kids are both at Yale: The son needed a design to accommodate more clothes storage; the daughter needed an overall decor plan. Based on measurements and a video of the room, Fischel created a floor plan, bought all of the products, and arranged to have the items shipped to New Haven, Connecticut, then assembled and put in place in one day. The total cost was about $3,500 for both rooms.

A Harvard student recently contacted Zoom to create an elegant look for his single dorm room. His budget?

About $3,000. “He wants very highend things he can move into an apartment,” she says. The upscale clients “buy things they plan on keeping.”

same baby boomers who slapped a Bob Marley poster on the dorm wall and called it a day are now willing to pay big bucks for coordinating duvets, pillows, curtains, rugs and other symbols of a well-appointed dorm for their children.

Dormify started out by designing fashionable twin XL sheets (the standard mattress size found only on campuses), then added other bedding and window collections, wall decals, storage and bath accessories. The company added a blog and “style advisors” across the country – 600 students who post photos of cute dorm rooms and other ideas for small spaces. It also has a licensing agreement with 22 national sororities, offering customized items and apparel.

A typical purchase on the site is $300, but some customers shell out as much as $2,000 to decorate the entire room. The site also has a gift registry, and more students are asking for dorm decor as birthday and graduation presents. Zuckerman says she probably spent $1,000 on Amanda’s freshman dorm, but she has heard of people who spent $4,000 to $5,000 on decor; one paid even more to install a customized closet system.

Many parents are willing to shell out for dorm room decor with the understanding that they are, effectively, putting together a first apartment.
