An appreciation for the arts The first time I stepped into the Steel Beam Theatre in downtown St. Charles, I knew right away it was a special place.

The cast photos from past performances that were crowding the walls of the lobby showed each production had value worth celebrating.

With less than 100 seats, it meant everybody at the theater could make a connection with the performers. To me, it’s one of the local establishments helping to make this area truly stand out.

Last week, we featured a cover story about the theater’s founder, Donna Steele.

She is resigning after 15 years with the Steel Beam. She’s moving out of state, and she will be missed. I’m honored that my daughter, Grace, will be one of the actresses

The cover story won’t be the last one the Kane County Chronicle will have on the local theater scene. As a big fan of local theater, I’ve attended many shows throughout the area. My daughters also have been involved in productions at other great local theaters, including Playhouse 38, Avenue J and Stageworks. And I was excited to be asked to be a part of the Kaneland Arts Ini-

tiative’s annual “Shout Out to Education” event, which will be Oct. 18 in the Kaneland High School auditorium.

Recently, Chronicle readers have said they are hungry for more coverage of local theater, music and arts events. We appreciate the feedback. We will aim to deliver that – especially with increased coverage of performances at the high schools in the area. Kaneland arts brochure earns recognition

The executive director of the Kaneland Arts Initiative, Maria Dripps-Paulson, was at Kaneland’s school board meeting Monday night to

accept an honor given to the colorful KAI brochure issued in the 2014-15 school year.

The KAI publication was among those recognized by the National School Public Relations Association’s annual communications contest and golden achievement awards luncheon, according to a news release.

Dripps-Paulson praised the brochure’s designer, Fairel Rank.

It was recognized as a special purpose publication.

The brochure highlights achievements accomplished by the organization and offers an explanation of its ongoing projects.

Kaneland hopes bonus helps to bring in new bus drivers

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Officials at Kaneland School District 302 said bus drivers desperately are needed. In an effort to draw drivers who already have the proper training and licensing, Kaneland is willing to offer an incentive.

On Monday night, Kaneland’s school board voted, 5-2, to provide a $1,000 bonus for new drivers who meet the criteria. Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs said four bus routes are not filled, and the district has been using substitute drivers to fill in.

On Friday, she said, some mechanics were driving buses.

“We are very much struggling to find bus drivers,” Fuchs said.

“We’re trying to get drivers. We just do not have enough.”

Julie-Ann Fuchs Associate superintendent for Kaneland School District 302 a plan to pay $500 upon a driver’s hiring and an additional $500 after 12 months. They also OK’d a $200 bonus for referrals from current drivers.

To receive the $1,000 bonus, drivers must possess a valid CDL Class B license with passenger endorsement, as well as a valid school bus permit.

Fuchs said the district has about 70 bus drivers.

Fuchs said the district would benefit most from drivers who quickly could be ready to take over a route after being hired. The district does train drivers, but she

said there are expenses associated with that, and the process also takes time. It costs $660 to train drivers, and it takes three to four weeks before trainees are able to drive a bus with students, she said.

“We’re trying to get drivers,” Fuchs said. “We just do not have enough.”

Board members Ryan Kerry and Veronica Bruhl voted against the incentive.

Kerry, who said he was not a fan of the idea in general, said he wasn’t pleased there wasn’t an end date determined.

“If we approve this the way it’s written, 10 years later, it’s still in place,” Kerry said. “I don’t like that.”

Rivas said he also was concerned about the lack of an ending date. Board members said it could be reviewed.

“Let’s look at it again in a year, please,” Kerry said.

Bruhl said she was uncomfortable with splitting the incentive payments. She said it would be difficult to get the bonus back if the driver didn’t complete the year.

Originally, the plan called for the $1,000 to be given to the drivers after a year was completed. Board member Pedro Rivas suggested that paying out some money up front might provide a stronger incentive. Board member Cheryl Krauspe suggested the referral bonus.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite event in Sugar Grove

WHAT: The Sugar Grove Park District presents Let’s Go Fly a Kite, a kite festival geared for families. Professional kite flyers from Chicago Kite will be featuring their kites and kite flying skills all day at this free community event. Kaneland Kolor fun run/walk

A weighted goodbye Anchors removed from St. Charles Township shop On the Web

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The anchors sitting outside the Little Store were meant to be a conversation piece.

In the past three decades the 700- and 1,200-pound objects sat along Route 25 in St. Charles Township, owner Mike Horton said people would take pictures with them.

But, he said as the anchors were removed from his property Tuesday morning, “I didn’t get that much conversation.”

Horton, who lives above the shuttered shop with his wife, said he found the anchors in 1986 while searching for the sunken Lady Elgin in Lake Michigan near the Highland Park shore.

The anchors’ history is unknown, but Horton said a compass reading supports his theory that they came from the schooner S. Thal. According to

At the time of his discovery, Horton said, divers could salvage items from the lake. He chained 55-gallon metal drums – two for the lighter anchor, three for the heavier one – to the relics, he said. He said he filled the drums with air to get the weights to float and towed them the three miles to shore

with his boat.

After getting the anchors sandblasted and painted in Batavia, Horton said he stationed them in front of the Little Store, which he and his wife bought in 1974. It closed in 2010, he said.

With retirement nearing – Horton works for the St. Charles Park District – it seemed time to address the anchors, he said.

He approached Highland Park about taking them since they were found off the city’s shoreline, he said.

“The way I feel, they’re going home,” Horton said.

Don Jensen, Highland Park’s superintendent of water production, said the water treatment plant’s location – the east end of Park Avenue on Lake Michigan – is a suitable place for nautical artifacts.

“It kind of fits in with the lakefront character of our facility here,” Jensen said.

atavia High School junior Addie Bobosky appeared ready for battle during the school’s homecoming week in September.

Joining some of her classmates while half her face was painted red, Bobosky’s team won the girls dodgeball tournament that started at the school’s Class Olympics event.

“It was a lot of fun. We all got really pumped up,” Bobosky said.

For many students and faculty in local schools, homecoming spirit week is a chance to let loose and build a stronger sense of community at the same time.

Small Games is by far the most popular event for the student body during homecoming week, said John Born, a St. Charles East senior and president of the school’s student council executive board.

Tiballi, Martinez, Russell may clash again in coroner race The 2016 race for Kane County coroner appears to be a recast of 2012. The same players say they might be running again.

was going to run again, too.

If no others join the race and all three follow through to be on the ballot, Russell and Tiballi will face off in a general primary March 15 for the Republican nomination.

Martinez and the GOP winner would vie for the coroner position in the general election Nov. 8.

Martinez said he reached out to both Republican committeemen and Democratic committeemen for support because he believes the coroner position should be nonpartisan.

Since homecoming is toward the start of the school year, student councils begin to plan for its related events at the end of the previous school year. The St. Charles East student council met once every two to three weeks over the summer, Born said.

Born said homecoming week can be hectic, but it always has been his favorite week of the year. Roberts said she felt the same way about North’s homecoming.

“It’s an exhausting week, it really is, but it’s worth every minute,” Roberts said. “It really brings out the best of our students and the school, the way they come together.”

Student councils also select the daily themes for spirit week. Kaneland High School’s themes include Mix and Match Day, Hat Day, Pajama Day, Crazy Hair Day and Kaneland Spirit day.

The class color days and Viking Fridays always are a big hit during Geneva High School homecomings, said Mary Keyzer, the school’s co-activities director.

“The kids really get into their own creative genius with it,” Keyzer said of the students’ homecoming apparel and costumes.

Schools, such as St. Charles North, also use homecoming as a chance to make a difference. Martinez is the founder of a company that provides a cleanup service after a death.

He said he is circulating nominating petitions.

Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt said Tiballi announced he was running for coroner at the Aurora Township Republican Rib Fest on Sept. 24. Tiballi, an Elgin doctor, said he talked about planning to run for coroner again, but he has not made a formal announcement. Tiballi also unsuccessfully ran for coroner in 2004.

“I am putting a campaign committee together to see how much support we have,” Tiballi said. “Many dozens of people, citizens across Kane County, called me and asked me to run again.”

Repeating some of the themes from the last coroner’s race, Tiballi said as a medical doctor, he is “the most qualified person” for the office.

“And I’m realizing that a lot of citizens feel the same

way. I have reconsidered and am going to be throwing my hat in the ring,” Tiballi said.

“I’m not ready to make a formal announcement.”

Russell’s recent conflicts with the Kane County Board aren’t stopping him from seeking a second term in office.

“I feel I’m still called to be here,” Russell said when he announced the run for re-election. “I have not been deterred at all.”

Russell, a retired sheriff’s deputy from DuPage County, had campaigned on promises he would restore integrity to an office previously marked by controversy.

In announcing his candidacy for 2016, Russell, of South Elgin, listed his first-term accomplishments, including entombing more than 50 unclaimed cremated remains found on an office shelf; establishing the coroner’s office as a prescription drug drop-off site; and restoring relationships with police, fire officials, hospitals and funeral homes.

As to the possibility of facing the same two opponents again, Russell on Tuesday said he cannot do anything about who decides to run for office.

“I mean, let’s hope we have the same result,” Russell said, meaning his re-election. “All I can control is what I do. We are going to run a clean, good campaign and move on.”

Austin was working for a public relations firm in New York when he decided to audition for the show, St. Charles North choral director Dale Morgan said.

Austin graduated from St. Charles North in 2009 and made a few appearances at the school last week starting Sept. 21.

On Sept. 23, Austin performed the Ed Sheeran song “Thinking Out Loud” in front of hundreds of students in the school’s main gym during a break in the Homecoming Small Games competition.

Austin will re-appear on the show later this fall once the rest of the show’s auditions episodes have aired.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles North High School alumnus made his debut Monday on NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition.

Jeffery Austin, 24, sang the Sam Smith song “Lay Me Down” for the prerecorded audition for the show’s ninth season.

No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani was the only “Voice” judge to turn her chair to face Austin during his performance, signifying she wanted him on her team.

Stefani, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Pharrell Williams each will select several contestants to compete on the show.

The winner of the ninth season will receive $100,000 and a recording contract.

Austin – whose real last name is McClelland – was active on Twitter after his audition, writing he was “so happy” to be on Stefani’s team.

James A. Getty, 83, of Gettysburg, PA, died September 26, 2015, in Gettysburg.

Getty was born on January 17, 1932, in Fairbury, IL, the son of the late James Andrew and Olive A. Getty. Getty grew up in Colfax, IL and graduated from Colfax’s Octavia High School. He received his Bachelors of Education Degree (Music) and his Master of Music Degree from Illinois Wesleyan University.

Jim met his wife Joanne at IWU, and they married on January 19, 1952 in Grandview, IL. Getty began his professional vocal music career when he sang for two summers with the St. Louis Municipal Opera chorus beginning in 1950, just before entering college.

He served in the US Navy from 1952-1956, serving in the Korean War as a radioman on the minesweeper USS Swift 122.

Getty taught high school choral music in Lincoln, IL; St. Charles, IL; Old Greenwich, CT; Annandale, VA; Sandusky, OH and Naperville, IL. At the collegiate level, Getty taught choral music at Lincoln College, Lincoln, IL; Bowling Green State University (Firelands campus); and the University of Maine at Orono.

Getty directed numerous church choirs throughout his career, including the choirs at Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky, OH; and Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church in Gettysburg.

Jim and Joanne toured Europe on three occasions with high school choral music students. The choirs were composed of a 40-voice nucleus from Getty’s high school choirs, along with select students from high schools across the US. The choirs performed in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy and the Netherlands.

Getty’s final two tours abroad were with the American Youth Symphony

and Chorus.

Getty was the general manager at the children’s theme park Fantasyland in Gettysburg for several summers before he moved to Gettysburg, PA in 1977 to start a small theatre called A. Lincoln’s Place.

There Getty performed his one-man show in a business that he and his wife created. For the past four decades, Getty’s full-time vocation was the study and portrayal of Abraham Lincoln. Over the years, Jim touched countless thousands of lives with his vast knowledge of all-things Lincoln. Getty would often present his programs over 500 times each year to visitors to Gettysburg, and to students in schools. Jim later developed a leadership presentation specifically for corporate executives and government leaders, where audiences were able to capture the lessons of history and apply them in today’s business environments.

Perhaps the signature piece of Getty’s presentations was the “press conference”, where “the President” willingly opened the floor to questions from the audience. Many newspaper and magazine columnists have written about Getty’s Q & A sessions. One wrote, “The depth of his (Getty’s) knowledge was astounding. None of our questions had stumped him ... the crowd had not presented him with particularly easy issues.”

Getty delivered the Gettysburg Address at the National Cemetery in Gettysburg each year on November 19th for several decades.

Getty presented his program at the Reagan Presidential Library, and had spoken before the Indiana and Pennsylvania State Legislatures. Getty delivered his Lincoln performances for the Delta Steamboat Company’s Civil War paddle wheel cruises from 1994-2006. Getty’s voice is that of President Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Getty received the Meritorious Service Award from the Grand Army of the Republic Sons of Union Veterans in 2014. That year, Jim also received the prestigious Nelson Current Award from the Lincoln Forum.

Getty was a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity, American

Choral Directors Association, Sons of Union Veterans, American Legion Post #202 (Gettysburg), The Lincoln Forum, Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania, Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia, Adams Country Historical Society, and a lifeand charter-member of A. Lincoln Presenters. Jim was a member of the Gettysburg Travel Council. He was a member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church.

Getty is survived by his wife, Joanne; son, Charles Andrew Getty (Amy) of Fremont, OH; daughter, Margot Diane Good (Mark) of Stoutsville, OH; daughter, Marla Suzanne Getty of Powell, OH; and son, James David Getty of Columbus, OH. Also surviving are grandchildren, Michael Getty (Mary Beth), Jimmie Getty (Holly), Robert Furgeson (step-grandson), Jesse Poole, Kevin Poole (Ashley), and Kathleen Lowe (James); as well as several great-and great-great-grandchildren.

Getty was predeceased by his parents, granddaughter, Joni Elizabeth Poole; and sister-in-law, Beverly Deterding.

Jim had a passion for Major League Baseball and the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed classical music, his Navy buddies, college football, and a cold bottle of Anchor Steam from San Francisco. And oh my, how he loved the sweet smell of a new car.

People who knew Jim Getty knew of his love for his wife and his family.

They knew of his love for a great joke and storytelling. They knew when he made a friend, he made a friend for life.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 2, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. from the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg with Rev. Dr. David Wright and Rev. Louis Nyiri officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. There will be a viewing on Thursday, October 1, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA and on Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Raymond W. McAdams, age 74, of Franklin Grove, formerly of Maple Park, passed away at his home surrounded by the love and prayers of his family, Saturday, September 26, 2015.

He was born June 7, 1941, at Glidden Hospital in DeKalb, IL, the son of William and Dorothy (Kahl) McAdams. Ray grew up in Maple Park and attended local schools.

He graduated from Kaneland High School with the class of 1959. Like many of his generation, Ray was a proud member of the FFA. Ray’s heart was lost at first sight of Josephine Harvey in 1967. After a whirlwind courtship, they walked down the aisle, hand in hand, and heart in heart, on June 29, 1968.

They made their home in Maple Park and raised a family that would include three children. He spent his whole adult life living in Maple Park, until a planned retirement move to Franklin Grove happened early due to Jo’s untimely death. Ray continued building their home, but in his heart it was never finished.

Ray lived there until he was reunited with his bride.

Ray put his FFA membership to work when he worked at Hintzsche’s for a time but was privileged to work several years for K.B. Nickels Redi Mix and Curran Contracting (Stahl) for 36 years at a job he loved. Ray retired in 2006.

His love of community led him into politics of a sort serving repeatedly as a village board trustee and eventually serving two terms as the mayor of Maple Park. He was a member and supporter of Teamsters Local 330. He also was a member of the Grace Methodist Church and was a volunteer fireman for decades, protecting his community alongside his friends and neighbors.

Ray had a heart that was happy when he was close to nature. He was a born driver and loved logging the miles for work and for pleasure.

He took road trips with Jo in the winters and visited the places that caught their attention. Whether it was somewhere they heard in a song, or where the weather was warmer, no matter the mileage. On one legendary family vacation, the family drove 1,000 in one day. Above all, Ray was a loving father and a devoted husband who would do anything for those he loved. For this reason alone, he will always be loved and always be remembered.

Having been diagnosed with cancer in April 2015, he refused common treatments so to spend his remaining time with his personal spiritual beliefs and friends. Ray asked that he not be mourned, since he was gifted a wonderful life. His wish is for those who knew him to ENJOY every day.

He is survived by three children, Terri Bishop, James (Lynn) McAdams and Lauri (Gary) Rogers; Three grandsons, Roy and Kyle Bishop and Jeremy Rogers; One great-grandson, Julien Bishop; One brother, Lloyd McAdams and a family of friends.

He is preceded by his wife, Jo; and his parents, William and Dorothy McAdams.

Visitation will be Friday, October 2, 2015, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL 60119. Interment will follow Saturday morning, October 3, at 10:00 a.m. at Gardner Cemetery, Maple Park.

Thomas Paul Ryterske, age 65, of Lily Lake, passed away suddenly at his home, on Friday, September 25, 2015.

Tom grew up in Racine and attended St. Edward Catholic Grade School, Park High School, and graduated from J.I. Case High School with the class of 1968. Tom continued his education at the University of Wisconsin Parkside.

He later transferred to the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources in 1972. After completion of military service, Tom received his Master of Science degree in Natural Resources from his alma mater in 1976.

After receiving his Masters degree, Tom accepted a job with the State of North Dakota as a Soil Scientist, working in Bottineau.

Tom began working for the United States Department of Agriculture in the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in 1977. In August, 1980, Tom transferred to St. Charles, IL where his position was District Conservationist for

Tom and Donna Zilles married on November 11, 1972 at St. Matthias Catholic Church, Milwaukee, WI. Tom served with honor and distinction in the United States Army for a total of 29 years - three years active duty and twenty-six years in the Reserves before being honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2001.

Tom adored his wife and daughters and they adored him back.

Tom grew up with three sisters; raised three daughters; doted on his granddaughter, Amelia; and was finally blessed with his grandson, Emmett, born the day before he passed away.

The two-party debates are working just fine

By JONATHAN BERNSTEIN Bloomberg View Third-party candidates are planning to file another lawsuit to force themselves into presidential general-election debates. I’m not a lawyer, but I’m fairly certain the lawsuit should fail on legal grounds – and I’m confident it would be terrible for democracy if it won.

The suit, which will be filed by the Green Party and the Libertarian Party, contends that the major parties – which sponsor the events through the Commission on Presidential Debates – are violating speech and antitrust law. I’ll defer to others on the antitrust issue, but it seems far-fetched to me.

There is no “market” involved here, but an election.

As Dave Weigel reports at The Washington Post, the lawsuit will allege that the debates “artificially advantage the Democratic and Republican Party candidates.” I don’t know what “artificially” means, but, yes, the debates advantage the major parties, in the same way a party advantages its own candidates over independent ones.

And in the same way that any two parties – which are private organizations – are free to hold debates, and any two candidates are free to speak when, where and how they wish. Such freedoms are central to the First Amendment, not violations of it.

If the government organized such debates, the third parties might have a decent case. But presidential debates are voluntary collaborations involving the parties and the news media, which will choose to broadcast and stream them.

That’s free speech. The lawsuit, however, is demanding government control over what the candidates and their parties want to do.

Regardless of the correct application of the law, it is in the interest of democracy to allow the two parties to organize debates as they choose. Democracy requires political parties.

Of course, a two-party system isn’t the only way to organize a democracy, but it’s what the U.S. has, and it fits the unusual institutional arrangements set up by the Constitution. As such, I see no problem with the government allowing the two parties to (further) institutionalize their dominant positions through private behavior.

In addition, multiparty, first-past-the-post elections tend to be unstable, with random and sometimes very odd effects.

That doesn’t serve anyone’s interests, and certainly not those of voters.

Moreover, although the ultimate effect of general election debates is widely overrated, the debates still serve some worthwhile functions. They educate the public at least a little (even if that’s mostly confined to teaching partisans what policies they are for, as opposed to helping people decide the candidate to vote for).

And they push candidates to make promises on substance and style, which is healthy for representation, and therefore for democracy.

So the debates work just fine. The courts should leave them alone.

Ann Coulter hit her target. She outed the enemy that controls the presidential debates. Her choice of words caught your attention, right? So did the rest of the world. Hitting the underbelly of the debate forum, hopefully, will produce the results she intended. I hope those left standing are listening and learning.

Her accusations need to be repeated: “How to get applause from GOP donors: 1) Pledge to start a war 2) Talk about job creators 3) Denounce abortion 4) Cite Reagan 5) Cite Israel.”

you have got to recognize the truths in her statement. I would replace all the candidates with Coulter for her shrewd insight and mettle. It may cost her.

I, too, find the debates insulting. The candidates all commit the sin of omission. Don’t they know the Internet has been invented? Even while they speak, their answers can be verified.

Give it up!

If they are truly so ill informed on the subjects, then they should not be running for office.

I don’t want a president who is

dumber than me. I suspect they have unspoken knowledge, which they chose to omit for campaigning purposes.

I have a suggestion that would help jack up the level of the answers. Next debate, the questioners should be foreign correspondents. There are some really tough, intelligent reporters across the pond. For them, conservatism is out; constitutionality is in.

Barrett, Loberg lead Geneva to UEC crossover win

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – There isn’t too much more of an intimidating looking net presence than that of the Geneva volleyball team. Combine the size with the chemistry the Vikings showed Tuesday night against Glenbard East and an opponent stands almost no chance.

Ally Barrett and Grace Loberg were more than dominant as Geneva took care of Glenbard East in straight sets, 25-19, 25-18, in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover match.

Barrett, a 6-foot-1 junior outside hitter, had herself quite the second set. She had four straight kills for Geneva (18-2) points and had seven of

her ten kills in the deciding set.

When Barrett, a UConn commit, and the Wisconsin-bound Loberg have gotten into a rhythm this season, it has seemed almost impossible for teams to take them out of it.

“Grace and I have played together for a long time,” Barrett said. “So even though we don’t directly affect each other (both being outside hitters), I think being out there together is a big mental help for both of us.”

Loberg added seven kills herself, six of which came in the first set. Both Barrett and Loberg probably could have had a few more kills each, but coach Annie Seitelman got a chance to play just about every player on the roster Tues-

day night.

Although the match didn’t count towards conference record, Seitelman was happy with the way her team has remained focused for each match, no matter what the scenario. Barrett and Loberg obviously present a huge challenge to teams, but it was more than just hitting that has made the difference for the Vikings, winning 18 of their first 20 matches.

“What makes us as strong as we are is how balanced of an attack we have,” Seitelman said. “We have great outsides, but we have a couple great middles and great right sides. So I think when we’re passing and in system, it’s very hard for teams to defend us because our setter does a nice job of distributing the

ball.”

That setter that Seitelman spoke of is Mikayla Lanasa.

The junior finished the two sets with 27 assists and made it seem like second nature to put the ball right where it needed to be, especially for Barrett and Loberg to really create problems for the Rams (11-13) Tuesday night.

Barrett said of all the offseason workouts and practicing that the Vikings did, one thing they have worked on more than anything was their passing.

“It’s seriously the No. 1 thing ... just passing, passing, passing,” Barrett said with a laugh. “We’ve worked on that so much and it’s nice to see it pay off in matches like this.”

Batavia overcomes slow start, beats Elgin

YORKVILLE – Kaneland has had Yorkville’s number on the volleyball court since late last season, including a 2014 spoiler to share the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference title, but Tuesday night belonged to the Foxes.

The co-defending Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference champs battled it out in a heated second set, but Kaneland could not force the tiebreaker as Yorkville swept the match, 25-15, 25-23.

“We know that’s a good squad,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “They beat us at the Wheaton North tournament, but we were without Jordan (Albarran), and they beat us here last year too and that’s something that was in the back of our mind; a little payback. I thought we played

well tonight. We’ve really been working defensively and we made some adjustments.

They’re a good blocking team and we knew that from film.”

The Knights (14-8, 2-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) kept pace with Yorkville early in Set 1, trailing 12-11 after a kill from Kaneland junior Jessica Weber (5 kills), but the Foxes went on a 7-0 run thanks to strong right side play from senior Chelsey Ellen, who knocked down two attacks during the stretch. Ellen and junior teammate Lindsay Loquercio worked out of the right side to combine for 10 kills in the match.

Yorkville (18-5, 4-0) established a 20-12 lead on a Kaneland serving error and two points from Albarran, ended the game with a pair of outside attacks.

The Knights rebounded in the second set, playing point

for point with the Foxes behind strong swings by freshman Katelyn Jablonski and Weber. Kaneland stuck to its game plan and eventually built an 18-17 lead on Yorkville before the Foxes took control, 23-20.

The Knights blocked a Yorkville shot and stayed alive on a Jablonski attack for a 2423 game, but Yorkville junior Katie Nolan knocked down the game-winning point out of the middle to end the night.

“Offensively, they know where our holes are. We know where their holes are. We’re just going for each other,” Kaneland head coach Cynthia Violett said. “The girls started getting down on themselves and stopped believing they could win. The second game they came out and realized they were just as good as Yorkville and came back to play.”

BATAVIA – Volley for the Cure is a special night for the Batavia girls volleyball team.

As the Bulldogs took on Elgin Tuesday night, they sought to honor and celebrate all who battle and have battled against breast cancer. This is the fourth year that Batavia and Elgin have been involved with this event.

Batavia shook off a slow start to win the first set and dominated the second set to win the Upstate Eight Conference River Division match, 2519, 25-11.

“I love the Volley for the Cure match. It’s always a great event. I don’t care what our record is and what their record is,” Elgin coach Scott Stewart said. “The girls show up to have fun. Our energy was awesome tonight.”

“I’m very happy for my team,” Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said. “When you are in an emotional match like Volley for the Cure, we had some girls who presented and they were pretty emotional.

To get it back together and get back on the court is not an easy thing to do ... myself included.”

Batavia improved to 8-17 overall and 2-2 in the River Division.

“We needed to be 2-2 right

now,” Trippi-Payne added.

“We’ve got two to go. We’re going to try to be 4-2 if we can.

We’ve got Streamwood and Geneva left and it’s not going to be easy.”

Elgin (9-13, 0-3) came out strong in a back and forth start to the first set, before the Bulldogs took control. Some Batavia communication problems let Elgin back in, to narrow the lead to 23-19, but Batavia held on to take some momentum into the second set.

“We held with them in game one pretty well,” Stewart said.

“Elgin came out really strong, and I’m really happy our team came and rallied together,” Batavia middle hitter Aasha Daye said. “Even when we struggled a little bit, we still came back and fought hard against them. They put up a really great match.”

The Bulldogs knew they needed to remain focused in that first set.

“I think in that first game, [Elgin] came out really strong.

They picked up a lot and they played really scrappy with the ball,” said Batavia senior Katelynn Fegan.

Trippi-Payne knew after a slow start, some motivation was needed. After talking with her team, the Bulldogs were able to overcome the slow start to pick up an important win.

Batavia senior girls golfer Becca Hasemann traveled to her prospective college over the weekend to root for her would-be future teammates.

On Monday afternoon, fellow Bulldog Emily Clark sat only a few paces from Hasemann, which was far closer than where Hasemann hopes to further her playing career.

Clark, however, is one reason Hasemann has her eyes on Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington. Clark recruited her longtime friend to join her for golf tryouts shortly before their freshman years began in August 2012.

“Emily, yep,” Hasemann grinned. “All of it from her there.”

Hasemann had just finished third individually at the Upstate Eight Conference meet at St. Andrews in West Chicago, shooting a 77, when she paused for a brief reflection.

She’s eager to keep her prep swan song afloat for as long as possible, beginning with next week’s IHSA Class AA Burlington Central Regional at Sycamore Golf Club. Ideally, her teammates will advance alongside Hasemann, who has welcomed her freshman sister, Samantha, to the fold in 2015.

Low glycemic diets are good for your health Dear Doctor K: Diabetes runs in my family, and my mother says I should eat a “low glycemic index” diet. Can you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: Carbohydrates (“carbs,” for short) are one of the main types of nutrients in food.

Common sources of carbs include bread, pasta, cereals, fruit, milk, vegetables and beans.

The carbs we eat are mostly too big for us to digest. Carbs are long strings of a certain type of molecule. Think of them as a string of pearls. When they hit the gut, digestive enzymes start to chop them up. It is the onepearl and two-pearl strings that are the sugars that get digested and travel from the gut into the blood. As a result, the energy that is in those tiny pieces reaches every cell in our body.

Some of the carbs we eat are easy for our gut to reduce into tiny pieces. Other carbs take much longer to chop up. When carbs are easily converted into sugars, blood sugar levels rapidly rise to higher levels. When

Carbs that are chopped up slowly are said to have a low glycemic index. Carbs that are easily digested and absorbed, and raise blood sugar levels rapidly, have a high glycemic index.

Of course, we don’t eat pure carbs (except for table sugar).

We eat foods that contain carbs, and some foods contain more carbs than others. So the amount of sugar that enters our bloodstream after a meal depends both on how much carbohydrate they contain and how easily those carbs are absorbed (the glycemic index). Multiplying the amount of carbs in a food by the glycemic index of those carbs determines the “glycemic load.”

For example, the glycemic index of a carrot is 131. In compar-

ison, a serving of mashed potatoes has a glycemic index of only 104. However, a half-cup serving of carrots has only about 4 grams of carbohydrate. The same quantity of mashed potatoes has more than 18 grams of carbohydrate.

That’s why the glycemic load for a serving of carrots is 11, while that of a serving of potatoes is 20.

In a study of tens of thousands of women over several decades, a research team at Harvard Medical School found that those who had low glycemic loads (mainly from eating whole grains) cut their risk of weight gain in half.

Man’s behavior is unacceptable Dr. Wallace: I’m a regular reader of your column and I know you are opposed to older guys dating younger girls.

Because of this, I know I shouldn’t write to you for advice, but curiosity has gotten the better of me.

I’m 20 and met Megan at a party. We talked to each other for over an hour and when she was about to leave I asked her how old she was. She told me she was 16, and then asked my age, and I told her I was 17. She believed me because I do look younger than I am.

I then asked her for her phone number and she gave it to me.

A couple of weeks later I called her and we went to a movie and had a wonderful time.

During the date I made a mistake and told her I work for an insurance company. She wondered how I could work for a company when I was only 17. I lied and told her it was only part-time and that my dad owned the company. I think she believed me because she never asked me anything else.

I always thought that the key stat about Zanzibar is that the whole population of the world could stand on it. However, for a bridge player, this should become: It is worth the while to count as much as you can on every deal.

The hard part, of course, is working out what’s critical to count.

South is in three no-trump.

West leads a fourth-highest club two. How should East defend?

South’s two-heart rebid was a reverse, which promised a maximum opening and that his hearts were shorter than his diamonds: 17-20 points and at least 4-5 in the red suits.

East needs to count declarer’s hand distribution. West’s lead promised a four-card suit, so South is known to have started with three clubs. Ergo, South probably has 1-4-5-3 distribution.

This should point East in the right direction. At trick two, he should shift to the spade king, just in case declarer has a singleton queen. Since East has diamonds under control, his side should be able to win five tricks before South collects nine. Even if West has the club king-jack, that suit can wait.

With the given layout, that’s exactly how the deal works out. Declarer ducks a couple of spades, wins the third round with dummy’s ace, and tries to run the diamonds. When they don’t break, he has to dislodge the club king to get out for down one.
