Meijer to host ‘Star Wars’ merchandise release party KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Fans of the “Star Wars” saga are invited to a celebration that begins tonight in St. Charles, according to a news release.

At 11 p.m., the St. Charles Meijer at 855 S. Randall Road will kick off its “Star Wars” Force Friday in celebration of the release of several grocery and general merchandise items in honor of this year’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” movie.

Radio station 101.1-FM will begin a live broadcast from the store and offer giveaway items at 11 p.m., and the merchandise will be available starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, the release stated.

The St. Charles Meijer is the only store in Illinois and one of 12 in the Midwest to offer an organized celebration that begins at 11 p.m. tonight, according to the release.

Sunglasses may be primarily regarded as summer and vacation accessories, but the fact is that they should be worn to provide year-round protection. It is of vital importance that sunglass lenses protect the eyes and skin surrounding the eye from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays.

It does not matter whether or not the sunglasses are expensive; if the lenses are dark or light; or whether they are tinted a certain color (amber, green, or gray lenses may only help increase contrast in certain conditions). Lenses without adequate 100 percent protection against UV rays leave the eyes vulnerable to cataracts, eye and eyelid cancer, retinal damage, and “photokeratitis” (sunburn of the cornea). There is more to sunglasses than style.

P.S. Even though contact lenses may provide some degree of protection against UV rays, they should still be worn with sunglasses, which cover the entire eyeball, lids, and surrounding skin.

Naked selfies cost Man charged after allegedly applicant new job threatening to blow up Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office

ST. CHARLES – A job applicant to a St. Charles company accidentally sent naked selfies to the cellphone of the human resources manager, according to police.

Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth said the company manager, who lives in Elmhurst, received the photos at 11:41 p.m. Aug. 11 on her cellphone while she was at home.

“She came back to work the next day and played back a voice message from the candidate to whom they had extended an offer to,” Ruth said. “He left his cell number as the return message.

She said, ‘Wait a minute.

That is the [number for the] inappropriate text.’ ” The manager first contacted St. Charles police, but was referred to Elmhurst because that is where she received the texts.

“We followed up and contacted him,” Ruth said. “He said, ‘That is me, but I meant to send it to somebody else.’ ” The job offer was rescinded, and no complaint was filed, Ruth said.

A spokeswoman from the company said there was no comment.

“I guess it’s the new wave of technology, and sometimes too much technology is not good for us,” Ruth said. “We’re seeing it more with younger people – an inappropriate text is sent, and it’s shared and it goes viral.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Garfield Farm Museum to offer prairie walk

CAMPTON HILLS – Garfield Farm Museum is offering a two-hour-plus prairie walk at 9 a.m. Sunday. The tour will be led by Jerome Johnson, the museum’s biologist. The museum is off of Route 38, on Garfield Road. Although the rains of June suggested a towering prairie of big bluestem grass, the drier conditions of July and August may have prevented an increase of height beyond the normal. For plants that started growing sooner than the bluestem and Indian grass, they are taller than in normal years. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by contacting the museum at 630-584-8485 or info@ garfieldfarm.org. The cost for the walk is $6. Visitors should dress appropriately for the weather. Individuals interested in a less vigorous hike should

call to schedule a separate tour.

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile in area

Mosquitoes collected near Burlington have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to a Kane County Health Department news release. The release indicated although there have been no reported cases of the disease in Kane County residents, and no birds have tested positive, this is the time of year when an increase in West Nile activity is expected.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that got the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Most people show no clinical symptoms of illness, but some might become ill three to 14 days after the bite. Visit kanehealth.com/ west_nile.htm for detailed monitoring results.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 21-yearold man faces felony charges after he threatened to blow up the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office in St. Charles, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Kane County sheriff’s deputies responded to the office at 540 S. Randall Road about 2:45 p.m. Monday after an employee found a note that “contained a threat to blow up the building,” the release stated.

The employee reportedly found the note while clean ing a table in a public area of the building.

Omar S h e r i f f ’ s Betancourt spokesperson Lt. Pat Gengler said the circumstance of the threat “was a little different” than past threats to county buildings because employees knew who was sitting at the table where the note was found.

They “identified him immediately,” Gengler said. “He was at a table doing legal research.”

He said it was “fairly quick and easy” for deputies to determine there were no suspicious packages in the area.

They quickly located the subject, Omar Betancourt, at his residence in the 400 block of Lowell Street in Elgin and took him into custody, according to the release.

Operations at the clerk’s office were not disrupted, Gengler said.

Betancourt was charged Tuesday with disorderly conduct and threatening a public official. Both are Class 3 felo-

nies.

Wednesday morning, he appeared in bond call at the Kane County Judicial Center, where his bond was set at $30,000 with 10 percent to ap-

ply for bail, according to the release.

Betancourt is next expected in court at 9 a.m. Sept. 10 in front of Judge T. Clint Hull in Courtroom 311.

Isacco’s Kitchen moving to another STC location

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles Italian restaurant is moving a few blocks away but still will be located downtown, its owner said.

Chef Isacco Vitali said his business, Isacco’s Kitchen, will re-open sometime in October at 131 S. First St. in St. Charles.

Vitali’s last day serving dine-in customers at his previous 210 Cedar St. location was Aug. 22, but his catering services are available by calling 630-444-0202.

King wants murder sentence reduced

Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress on Aug. 25 filed a motion on Shadwick King’s behalf to have his sentence reconsidered. Another motion was filed requesting a statement of reasons for

King’s sentence.

King, 48, was sentenced July 31 to 30 years in an Illinois prison in the July 6, 2014, death of his wife, Kathleen, 32.

In her motion, Childress said the court Shadwick King considered evidence that was inadmissible as aggravation against King and considered written state-

ments in aggravation from people not authorized by statute to present victim impact statements.

Childress also wrote in the motion the sentence imposed on King was 10 years in excess of the minimum sentence and “unduly harsh.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Kane County prosecutors had not yet filed the responses to Childress’ motions.

They will be at a Sept. 9 hearing to present arguments for the motions.

A St. Charles woman who faced felony charges in connection to an armed robbery at a Batavia retailer has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, according to Kane County court records.

Kayla N. Magnuson, 23, formerly of Ge- Kayla N. neva, pleaded Magnuson guilty Friday to misdemeanor retail theft and was sentenced to 18 months of probation. She has a balance of $650 fines and costs to pay, down from $2,900, according to records.

Records indicate charges of felony armed robbery and felony robbery were dropped.

Magnuson and a 17-yearold St. Charles youth were charged after an armed robbery at the Batavia Wal-Mart, 801 N. Randall Road, on June 11, 2014.

There, she stole a pair of scissors to remove a security tag while he removed a 32inch flat screen TV worth less than $300, according to court records.

The pair reportedly were confronted by an employee after they passed the last point of purchase. Records indicate the teen displayed a long machete and threatened a second employee.

The two also were connected with robberies at the Meijer and Wal-Mart stores in St. Charles, which also happened June 11, 2014.

While the teen was charged in those St. Charles incidents, charges were denied for Magnuson in both cases.

County Board to OK riverboat casino funds By the numbers

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Board is poised to award more than $800,000 in riverboat casino funds to 43 nonprofits and local governments, including Blackberry Township, the Northern Illinois Food Bank and St. Charles Heritage Center.

Additionally, nearly $4 million in Grand Victoria Riverboat funding is set to be split among 19 internal county projects, such as the Fit for Kids program, Kane Kares and the Child Advocacy Center.

The County Board is expected to vote on the allocations Tuesday.

Board member John Hoscheit, who chairs the Riverboat Committee, said the proposed allocations were the result of “a lot of deliberation.”

The committee met twice.

It pared down the internal requests from $3,914,568 to $3,863,568 – a difference of $51,000 – and reduced the external requests from nearly $2 million to $847,403, according to county documents.

“Our process isn’t perfect,” Hoscheit told the Executive Committee on Wednesday.

The riverboat fund program supports educational, environmental and economic development activities.

Batavia eyeing increase in water, sewer rates City commissioned study last year

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A family of three living in Batavia could see their monthly water and sewer bill increase by $14 in the next five years.

A water and sewer study the Batavia City Council had commissioned is recommending officials increase water and sewer rates. Last year, aldermen approved hiring Municipal and Financial Services Group to do the study.

As part of its study, Municipal and Financial Services Group recommended increasing water and sew-

It recommended the city “ramp up” to replacing about $2 million a year worth of water lines by 2025.

City officials also have anticipated that – over the next decade – about $50 million in improvements might be necessary at the wastewater treatment facility in order to comply with new regulations and to expand treatment capacity.

According to the study, other communities in the area already pay more for water and sewer service.

For example, the average monthly water and sewer

er rates over the next five years to fund ongoing operations and capital investments in the water and sewer systems.

As proposed, water rates would increase by 3 percent in 2016 and 2017, by 4.25 percent in 2018, and by 4.5 percent in 2019 and 2020.

The study also recommended increasing sewer rates by 6 percent starting in 2016 and through 2020. Currently, the average monthly water and sewer bill for a family of three is $56. That would go up to $70 a month if aldermen approve the study’s recommendations.

BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 officials hope the district’s proposed 2015-16 budget is more informative to residents and board members than past budgets.

“We’re making it a little easier to read, but also – at the same time – providing more detail,” said Tony Inglese, the district’s new chief financial officer.

Kris Monn, who was the district’s assistant superintendent for finance and operations, left the district to become the new school superintendent for Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201.

During a public hearing on the $87.6 million budget last week, resident Sylvia Keppel called the budget incomplete and “wholly inadequate.” Inglese said the district always has welcomed public comment on the school district’s budget, whether it is at a public meeting or elsewhere.

“We always appreciate the community reaching out and letting us know, or asking questions about the budget,” Inglese said.

The budget shows revenues of about $87.9 million and expenses of about $87.6 million, for a surplus of $306,116. Residents will have another chance to publicly comment on the budget at the Batavia School Board meeting Sept. 22. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Rosalie Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia. Board members are set to vote on the budget that night.

Inglese pointed to the section on salaries in the budget as one example of how the district is trying to provide more detail. The budget can be viewed at the school district’s website, www.bps101.

“Rather than just saying what we’re going to spend in a given year on salaries, we actually break out into the various different types of salaries, whether they are permanent positions or temporary positions or supplemental pay,” Inglese said. “We’re taking a lot of raw data and trying to turn it into information that actually means something to people, that they can use to make decisions, for the board and the community alike.”

The budget shows $31.9 million in salaries for teachers this year, down from last year’s $32.5 million. In the budget, overall salaries total $44.5 million, down from $45.2 million last year. According to the budget, overall salaries comprise 51 percent of the budget.

The budget also breaks out how much money is spent in the classroom and on various programs.

“You see all the various details that go into operating a school district,” Inglese said.

Overall, the district’s expenses are projected to increase by 2.7 percent this year, Inglese said. At the same time, revenues are anticipated to increase by only 1 percent.

“Our expenditures go up every year because of other various pressures, and yet our revenues don’t, just by virtue of the way school funding works in the state of Illinois,” Inglese said. “We’re very heavily reliant on local property taxes, and here in Batavia, we rely on local property taxes to the tune of 83 percent, which is really, really high. And that means that the state of Illinois provides less support to us directly than the taxpayers do.

That creates a pretty heavy local tax burden.”

Fall in love with autumn There’s just something about the arrival of autumn that I look forward to every single year. I don’t know if it’s the cooler weather or the variety of seasonal activities that make September and October some of my favorite months, but I know there’s definitely a distinct feeling in the air when fall comes around.

You have to admit, the autumn scenery is truly beautiful. The vibrant oranges, crimsons and golds of the changing leaves are absolutely gorgeous, and the time change makes for some lovely sunsets. Spending time outside during this season is perfect because the oppressively hot days of summer are gone. It’s just chilly enough to snuggle up in a cozy sweatshirt. And no matter how juvenile it may seem, I will never grow tired of jumping in piles of leaves. (The raking I could do without however.)

Fall holds many exciting opportunities at school as well. Homecoming always is an enjoyable week, from the school spirit days to the annual parade. Of course, I always enjoy the homecoming football game, as well ... and really any of the school football games for that matter.

Although I’m admittedly not a huge sports fan, the games are a chance to show some Geneva pride and hang out with friends. Let’s hope the Vikings beat the Batavia Bulldogs this year.

When not at school, I plan on filling my weekends by engaging in seasonal activities with my family. From pumpkin carving to apple picking to cider doughnuts, I’ll be busy. A few years ago, my family adopted the moniker “Jacko the First” for our jack-o-lantern. We’ll be carving “Jacko the Sixth” this fall, and with a little imagination, I’m sure he’ll be a masterpiece.

The gorgeous scenery, crisp air and numerous activities of autumn will be here in the blink of an eye, and I can’t wait. Whenever fall comes around, there’s always a part of me that misses summer and looks forward to winter, which perhaps seems counterintuitive. But I think the changing of the seasons is a beautiful process, showing us nothing is permanent, for things usually come full circle.

Before we know it, the leaf piles will make way for snowbanks, which will later melt to reveal flowers peeking through the ground. We live in a world that is constantly changing, but I think the beauty lies in that fact. For me, nothing demonstrates this better than autumn ... a season full of fresh starts as well as timely endings.

Federal Reserve’s independence is a strength THE WASHINGTON POST As a policymaking institution, the Federal Reserve has two sources of legitimacy. The first is its mandate from Congress, enacted in 1977, which requires the central bank to “promote effectively the goals of maximum employment, stable prices and moderate long-term interest rates.” The second is the unique technical expertise the Fed’s board of governors, and its staff, bring to bear on that multifacted mission.

What the Fed is specifically not supposed to do is to set interest rates according to what various segments of the population or market players tell it to do. In that sense, the

dueling teach-ins and demonstrations on the sidelines of the Fed’s annual retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, were perhaps a positive development for free speech but not for the Fed’s institutional independence, real or perceived.

The very hallmark of central-bank independence, without which there is no point in having a central bank, is the occasional willingness to resist popular pressure, even to tell the majority of Americans “no.”

There’s a fine line between listening respectfully to various voices affected by Fed policy and submitting to interest-group lobbying and politicization. Whatever the Fed decides to do about interest

rates in what figures to be a crucial September meeting, it cannot appear to be swayed by the arguments of Fed Up on the left, which wants a continuation of zero percent interest rates, or the American Principles Project on the right, which disagrees. Still less can the Fed respond in knee-jerk fashion to the volatile global stock markets, lest the impression arise that monetary policy exists to prop up equity prices.

No, the Fed must stick to principles and data – which admittedly is a tall order when so much is riding on its decisions and when the data’s meaning is so open to interpretation. What Americans really need the Fed to be is impartial.

Rascals brings family-friendly sports bar to Geneva Restaurant opened in city’s downtown in May

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Growing up, Dina Pray waited tables at her parents’ restaurants in Batavia and St. Charles.

Life has come full circle for the Geneva resident and co-owner of Rascals Tavern and Grill, which opened in May in the space formerly occupied by Gratto Italian Tapas.

This is Pray’s first restaurant.

She owns the restaurant with her sisters, Jackie Sisto and Christy Calderaro. Pray’s cousin, Joseph Sisto, and his daughter previously owned Gratto Italian Tapas.

In purchasing the restaurant, Pray and her sisters decided to go in a different direction.

“We wanted to make it into a family-friendly sports bar with really good food,” Pray said.

While Rascals does offer such typical sports bar fare as burgers and wings, it also offers such entrees as jambalaya, Mediterranean chicken, Cajun salmon, pasta scampi and butternut squash ravioli.

“Everything is homemade,” Pray said. “The pastas are excellent. Our penne scarola is phenomenal.”

The penne scarola is among her favorite items on the menu.

“It has an Italian sausage in it that is just out of this world,” Pray said. “It’s just so good.”

Family recipes are used to prepare some of the dishes. Pray’s grandfather is originally from Italy.

The restaurant steers clear of using any frozen ingredients.

“We get a bread order every day, and all of our sauces and gravies are made fresh,” Pray said. “Our wings are never frozen; our calamari is never frozen; it’s all fresh. We also have a fresh ground salmon burger.

She noted that sports bars do not typically serve salmon burgers.

“We wanted to offer a little something for everybody,” she said.

Rascals also offers a kids menu, which is part of its mission to be accommodating to families.

“I grew up in Geneva and know a lot of families here,” Pray said. “I want them to be able to come here.”

The restaurant also sells a variety of sandwiches, including a steak sandwich, meatball sandwich and Italian beef, as well as pizza. Rascals’ desserts are also all homemade, including the chocolate eclaire cake, carrot cake and the strawberry shortcake.

Rascals’ outdoor patio, which overlooks Third Street, has proven to be a popular feature.

“There’s waiting lists for it on the weekend,” Pray said. “People love it.”

On the weekends, the patio will feature live entertainment, she said.

Rascals is located at 207 S. Third St. in downtown Geneva and is open for lunch and dinner. The restaurant also does catering.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Troubled Hubble drummer Nate Lanthrum about the show. His brother, Andrew, plays bass in the band. The band is named after NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and refers to the trouble it was having after it was initially launched.

Eric Schelkopf: I know you guys will be putting on a 10-year reunion show on Saturday.

Nate Lanthrum: It’s our first proper

Chicago show in almost exactly a decade. I think our last Chicago show was in September 2005.

Schelkopf: Was it just the right time to do a show like this?

Lanthrum: We stopped touring in 2005.

We stopped putting out new music and essentially stopped being a band at that point.

But we never really said there wasn’t anything possible for the future.

And about a year ago, some friends of ours have contacted us about doing a benefit show.

So, that kind of got the gears in our head turning that if we are going to do that, we might as well also do a full-on show so friends and family can see us.

Schelkopf: Can you believe that is has been 10 years since you guys have played together?

Lanthrum: No. We’ve been practicing together, and it’s like old times. We’re locking into each other musically, and

we’re able to just have fun and be four musicians in the room together.

It’s been an absolute blast. It’s been an absolute trip to play these songs now that we wrote 15 years ago, and kind of relive this younger part of our lives.

Schelkopf: Why did you guys break up in the first place?

Lanthrum: We were touring for a few

years pretty much solid. We were on the road for six months out of the year the last couple of years.

Around 2005, it just seemed like it was the time to stop playing. We kind of hit the pause button and pursued some other musical ventures.

Schelkopf: What’s the future for Troubled Hubble?

Lanthrum: The Hubble telescope is

as powerful as it’s ever been. It was slated for destruction, and bam, all of a sudden it’s back in orbit.

Using that analogy, we also have a fresh set of lenses, and we’re up and moving again.

Geneva senior Krohe shoots ‘best round ever’ to lead Vikings to win

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Both the Geneva and Batavia girls golf teams came into Wednesday’s dual at Mill Creek Golf Club on a high note.

Each team had won its previous match, and entered the rivalry matchup with high hopes. But Geneva senior Reilly Krohe shot a season-low 1-over par 36 to lead the Vikings to the victory, 162-171, in the Upstate Eight Conference River matchup.

Krohe said everything felt as if it was working. Between that and her familiarity with Mill Creek, she shot a personal-best round.

“This was the best round I’ve ever shot,” Krohe said. “I would like to keep it there, but just keeping it consistent like I did today. There were really only one or two holes that I probably could have done a little better on. But overall, I couldn’t be happier with the way I shot today.”

The senior has played at Mill Creek several times, which could have been the reason she putted better than usual, as well. Her 20-plus-foot putt for birdie on the seventh hole was one of those shots that seemed to propel Krohe to earning medalist honors Wednesday.

A couple of Krohe’s teammates also shot well, but were a bit overshadowed by her 36.

Junior Kendal Fioresi (39), Darby Lillibridge (42) and Natalie Saeger (45) rounded out the scoring for the Vikings.

Lillibridge earned medalist honors in Geneva’s match with Glenbard East on Tuesday, and Krohe’s performance Wednesday showed the Vikings have a number of strong golfers who can shoot a low round on any given day.

“Consistency is the name of the game,” Geneva coach Doug Ross said. “We have a few girls that are more consistent than others, so we hope they are just role models for the others. We have several girls that

Senior Rebecca Hasemann is someone that Kauffmann will look to as a leader of this Bulldogs bunch, having once again led the team with a 5-over 40. Not too far behind were Sam Baumann and Madi McCoy, who each shot a 43. Francesca Hoffman finished up the Batavia scoring with a 45.

“You definitely have to try to keep a short memory in this game,” Hasemann said. “I think if you hit a bad shot, just laugh it off and move on to the next shot. It can be frustrating, but I just tell myself that I’ll hit a good shot on my next one and move on.”

Another installment of the Batavia-Geneva rivalry ended with another standout score on the Vikings’ side, something Kauffmann said has become all too familiar. But both coaches laughed about it and have really enjoyed the rivalry of late.

“Every time we play them, someone always shoots a really low score,” Kauffmann said with a laugh. “It seems like it happens every time, but it’s always a good battle between us, and we like playing them and playing here.”

Coach Mike Gecan said his team’s play was “promising at times” and the beginning of the season has “been a learning experience for some of the younger guys” as BC (1-1-1) begins Big Northern East play this coming week with road matches against Rockford Christian, North Boone and Genoa-Kingston.

Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco wants to win just about as much as any soccer coach around. He’s had to deal with a few bumps in the road to becoming successful to start the season. After losing to Neuqua Valley in the opener, the Bulldogs looked like they were going to respond.

Batavia (0-2) was hosting East Aurora and had control of the match. But after allowing a goal, Batavia couldn’t find the back of the net in a tough, 1-0 loss.

“We’re getting there,” Gianfrancesco said. “It’s still early and there’s a lot of season left. There are some positives and the guys are working extremely hard. If you’re going to lose games, this is the time to do it ... before conference games and, of course, the postseason.”

The Bulldogs will host Plainfield Central, Oswego and West Chicago in the next week, with hopes that a first win will help them get things going before Upstate Eight Conference River Division play begins with a trip Sept. 15 to Larkin.

There is always that standard, especially at schools with great soccer traditions such as St. Charles East and St. Charles North, to get off to a strong stars to begin the season.

After both East and North won their openers, handily, in matchups with West Chicago and Rockford East, both boys teams are currently playing in early-season tournaments that have brought quite a test.

North (2-1) won its first two matches, beating aforementioned Rockford East and Bartlett, in large part because of Ryan Olson’s five goals, but is now taking part in the Barrington Tournament.

This is one of the better tournaments in Illinois and features several teams from last year’s state tournament.

The North Stars were given their first lost of the season, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Warren. The tournament also has the North Stars playing Crystal Lake South and Wheaton Warrenville South in the coming days.

East was also riding high after taking down West Chicago, 7-2, in its opener.

But since then, the Saints are now 1-2, after suffering losses to Schaumburg and Niles West as part of the New Trier Invite.

East also will take on Glenbard North as part of the event, which will yield one final match after the three round-robin matches have been played.

Geneva (1-2-1) is also currently involved in a tournament at Hinsdale Central and tied its opening match with Hersey, 1-1, as part of the Red Devil Cup. One team that saw its difficult early-season tournament turn into a positive was Marmion. The Cadets beat a strong Boylan team, 2-0, with goalkeeper Daniel Galush playing some strong soccer.

Numerous times, the Marmion Athletics Twitter page featured a tweet to the tune of: “Galush was a bear in goal tonight” or “Galush with a monster save.” Marmion will see just how good it is in the coming days, playing host Barrington and Lake Zurich.

Burlington Central also saw a tough couple of teams in the DeKalb Tournament this past week. The Rockets beat Belvidere North, 3-2, before drawing

Research for better prostate cancer test is ongoing Dear Doctor K: I keep hearing about problems with the PSA test.

Are any new screening tests for prostate cancer in development?

Dear Reader: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a biomarker. Biomarkers are chemicals that can reveal that something abnormal is happening in the body. PSA is a chemical released by cells in the prostate gland. It is released at relatively high levels when prostate cells turn cancerous. However, PSA also is released in non-cancerous prostate conditions.

The PSA test has been used for decades to detect prostate cancer before symptoms begin. However, there are two problems with the test. First, as just mentioned, high PSA levels do not always indicate that there is prostate cancer. The phrase doctors use to describe this imperfection is that the test result can be “falsely positive.”

Second, the PSA levels measured by the test can sometimes be normal even when a person does have prostate cancer. The phrase doctors use to describe this imperfection is that the test result can be “falsely negative.”

The third problem with the test is that even when it accurately detects prostate cancer, it doesn’t distinguish aggressive cancer from non-aggressive cancer. As I’ve said before, even though it

You will die with these cancers, but you won’t die from them.

If the PSA test detects a prostate cancer that will not grow and spread, then detecting it can lead to invasive diagnostic tests that can have harmful side effects of their own, and to overtreatment of a cancer that will never cause any harm. The diagnosis and treatment will be worse than the disease.

Scientists are trying to find new and potentially better biomarkers for prostate cancer.

They’re looking for biomarkers that have fewer falsely positive and falsely negative results, and that distinguish between aggressive and non-aggressive prostate cancers. Here are two of the most promising options:

• Genetic tests of prostate tissue.

Cells in the prostate gland turn cancerous because of changes in

their genes. Certain changes in genes lead to aggressive cancers.

These genetic changes can be identified in biopsy specimens of the cancer. Such tests do not influence decisions about how the cancer should be treated; they just help distinguish between cancers that should be treated more or less immediately versus those non-aggressive cancers that just need to be closely monitored to make sure they don’t start growing.

• Circulating tumor cells. Cancer spreads when tumor cells break away, get swept up into the bloodstream and start to grow in other parts of the body. A new “liquid biopsy” uses a simple blood test to measure circulating tumor cells and their telltale markers. This test isn’t yet part of standard care.

But it could someday reduce the need for follow-up biopsies and help judge whether treatment is working. As for the PSA test, I think it is worth doing in men who are at increased risk for getting prostate cancer, such as those who have had relatives with the disease.

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to start jogging to get in shape. All of my best friends are into jogging and I want to join their group. When I mentioned it to my brother, he said he heard that jogging is actually bad for girls. Is this true? – Jill, Mobile, Alabama Dear Jill: Jogging is one of the best forms of exercise for girls and guys if proper precautions are taken to avoid injury. First of all, the beginner jogger should get a thorough physical exam. If the doctor gives the green light, start slowly – on grass if possible, because it’s easier on the knees. Shoes are important. They should fit properly and have a rubber heel.

To receive maximum benefit, you should jog at least three times a week. In case you want to shoot for a record, former Olympic coach Arthur Lydiard estimated that he had jogged 166,530 miles.

If you decide jogging isn’t for you after you’ve given it a try, brisk walking is also an excellent exercise. Start slowly and work up to three miles per walk, at least four times a week.

After counting your top tricks, decide what you need – how many extra winners – and decide where you will get them. You will “exchange” the opponents’ winners while establishing tricks for yourself.

This deal occurred in a social game and highlighted how not to play.

North’s two-club rebid was New Minor Forcing. When South implied 2-5-2-4 distribution, North signed off in three no-trump.

South starts with six top tricks: two diamonds and four clubs.

Normally, one would assume that the diamond queen was onside, but the auction made a diamond lead almost inevitable, whatever West’s holding in the suit.

Declarer should take the first trick in his hand and attack spades by leading low to dummy’s jack.

Here, when that wins, South returns to his hand with a club and leads another spade. With this layout, overtricks pour in.

At the table, South won with dummy’s diamond jack, cashed his club winners, unblocked the diamond ace, played a spade to dummy’s king, took the diamond king (trick eight), and led a heart to the queen, king and ace.

West cashed the spade acequeen and diamond queen, then led a heart to East’s jack for down one.

This is a part-time position consisting of 16 hours per week, and reports directly to the Chief of Police. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of functions that support the records management and administrative obligations of the police department.

The duties of a Police Records Specialist III may include, data entry, receiving telephone calls and citizen visits concerning information requests and complaints, accepting payments of fines and fees, communicating with other law enforcement agencies, preparing court related documents, and other tasks as assigned.

Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to graduation from high school or equivalent with two (2) years of law enforcement records experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish successful working relationships; ability to work under pressure and/or with frequent interruptions; ability to work with angry or difficult customers. Experience with Municipal Software, Inc. (MSI), and GovPayNet are a plus.

Salary is dependent on qualifications.
