cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The whole world might know about the Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny McCarthy wedding now, but likely no one found out about it from the city of St. Charles.

On Tuesday at the St. Charles City Council meeting St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina mentioned that he, City Administrator Mark Koenen, St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan and St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Steve Huffman met with management of the Hotel Baker about two weeks ago in regards to a high-profile and private event.

After the Council meeting, Koenen confirmed the Hotel Baker sit down happened on Aug. 14, and at the time they were told the event was for Wahlberg and McCarthy.

walk outside Hotel Baker began to fill with onlookers.

Hotel Baker paid the city to provide police officers for McCarthy and Wahlberg’s special event, Koenen said.

He did not have the final amount the hotel paid with him after the meeting.

Two pairs of St. Charles police officers on Sunday

flanked the east and west sides of Hotel Baker, and St. Charles police squad cars continually moved up and down Main Street in front of the hotel. A black unmarked squad was parked near the west end of the bridge most of Sunday afternoon.

Rogina on Tuesday commended Hotel Baker, the additional security it hired and the St. Charles Police Department for ensuring downtown St. Charles remained safe over the weekend.

“It provided us another opportunity to showcase our city,” Rogina said. “All I saw was everybody in order.”

Geneva seeks volunteer residents for four advisory boards

Vacancies exist on the Zoning Board of Appeals, Fire and Police Commission, Strategic Plan Advisory Committee and

the Economic Development Commission. Residents interested in serving on one of the these advisory boards should submit an application along with a letter of interest to Mayor Kevin Burns, Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St., Geneva, IL 60134. The envelope should include a reference to the specific board being sought.

Candidates must be a legal U.S. citizen, a registered voter, have no felony convictions; and be current on taxes and payments to the city. Batavia School Board OKs new teachers contract Teachers to receive 3.72 percent salary increase in first year of contract BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members on Tuesday unanimously approved a new three-year contract with the Batavia Education Association, the union that represents Batavia School District 101’s teachers.

As part of the agreement, Batavia teachers will receive a 3.72 percent salary increase in the first year of the contract and projected increases of 2.25 percent in the second year and a 1.6 percent in-

crease in the third year based on the consumer index, Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn said.

“We are pleased to have a three-year agreement with the BEA that reaffirms our commitment to collaboration with our teaching staff to provide outstanding educational service for Batavia,” Monn said in a press release. Monn was the chief negotiator for the Batavia School Board.

Reality show on St. Charles business to premiere Sept. 9

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A new reality TV show featuring a St. Charles business will premiere Sept. 9 on cable, the business’ CEO said on Tuesday to St. Charles aldermen.

“Pond Stars” will show the world of pond building through the work of Aquascape founder and CEO Greg Wittstock along with his staff. The show premieres at 9 p.m. Sept. 9 on the cable channel Nat Geo Wild.

“We’re totally stoked for it,” Wittstock said on Tuesday during a presentation to the St. Charles City Council.

“It will hopefully bring a lot of business to St. Charles.”

Television producers first discovered Aquascape through some YouTube videos in 2011, and in October 2013 camera crews began filming Wittstock and some of his employees. Each minute of the show is edited and condensed from about one hour of filming – the crew shot six days a week for 12 to 14 hours at a time, Wittstock said.

Wittstock played a roughly three-minute clip from the pilot episode that depicts his crew putting together a pond for a turtle rescue facility in Georgia.

Filming for future seasons of the show could begin in November, Wittstock said.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina thanked Wittstock for presenting information on the show to the City Council.

“I think this will promote conversations between you and I and the staff … to get St. Charles featured on the show,” he said.

Other highlights of the new agreement include the formalization of the district insurance committee to monitor the district’s self-insured benefits plan, as well as strengthening district collaborative committee structures.

Advisory Council and the Professional Learning Advisory Council, are charged with ensuring that the district’s educational services are research based and targeted at improving student achievement.

Also included is the Student Services Committee, designed to enhance the voice of the professional staff who work with the district’s special education students.

“In strengthening the Curriculum and Professional Learning Advisory Councils within our contract, we

recognize the importance of having [the] teachers’ voice be a central part of the district’s long-range plan for developing and maintaining a strong, viable curriculum and providing the professional development opportunities needed to implement that curriculum,” said Amy Biancheri, acting president of the BEA, in the release. “And in refocusing the Student Services Committee to be more centered on special education needs, it ensures that we are also providing the best education for all of our students.”

GROWING DEMAND Food pantries continue to serve more people

alagattolla@shawmedia.com Each month, Belen Hood said she is meeting more and more families who are signing up to receive food from the food pantry at The Salvation Army Tri-City Corps in St. Charles.

Hood has run the pantry since November, and said the number of families served by the pantry is continuing to grow. She has signed up as many as four in a day. Financial challenges over the past several years have led to increases in people served at pantries everywhere, and Maj. John Miller, commander of the St. Charles-based organization, said The Salvation Army is finding it a challenge to keep its shelves stocked.

Hood said the organization has seen a 37 percent increase this year. She said some clients have told her cuts in food stamps have taken a toll. She said The Salvation Army has been giving out about 900 bags of groceries each month, which she said represents more than 300 families. She said she has been over her budget and has had to cut back on items, such as meats. She said the organization has been scheduling budgeting classes in hopes that clients can stretch their food budgets, and she said she lets people know about the free meals offered throughout the community, as well as other local food pantries.

“I can sign up four people in a day, and that’s brand-new people,” she said. “I have seen an increase in clients coming to the food pantry.”

The growing demand isn’t unique to The Salvation Army in the Tri-Cities. Melisa Taylor, who runs the Between Friends Food Pantry in Sugar Grove – and also is a Kane County Board member – said use of the pantry continues to grow, but “that is expected, with the economy being the way it is.”

some people who are going to pantries actually might have had a need for months but might have been reluctant to visit.

“They might have lost their jobs six months to a year ago,” Taylor said. “People have pride.”

She said people ultimately will come to the pantry when necessary, where perhaps they might not have a decade ago.

She said there is more of an understanding of the need, adding

“the people who were giving the can of beans three years ago are now in the line for the can of beans today.”

“In society, people are not passing judgment like they would have 10 years ago,” Taylor said.

Taylor said she isn’t seeing a huge shortage because “my community is stepping up, absolutely.” She said the summer has been “spectacular” for gardens, and people are donating their garden produce to the

pantry. She said farmers have donated from their own gardens.

Erik Jacobsen, communications manager at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, said the food bank and food pantries are striving to meet a growing need. He cited a study from Hunger in America 2014 in which the food bank learned it is serving 71,000 people each week in the 13 counties it serves. He said in the last fiscal year, the pantry served 50 million meals, the most ever.

He said a recent strategic plan calls for the NIFB to have 75 million meals served by 2020.

“It’s still not enough,” he said.

Hood said she had to cut back on meat products, instead adding more vegetable and pasta items. She also has welcomed donations. For instance, the St. Charles Moose Lodge recently donated an amount of food that filled an entire vehicle, she said. Then, the organization donated $450 in Aldi gift cards.

Hood said the average client

will take away two bags of groceries, some meat and toilet paper, “but that’s not going to last them the rest of the month.”

Megan Selck, the vice president and chief development officer for Naperville-based Loaves and Fishes, said the organization has seen some visitors from the Kane County area, as well. She said demand is growing. She said the organization will always “err on the side of generosity.”

She said educational programs can have a significant impact. As far as adding meat products, she said the organization has partnered with grocers on food that might be nearing expiration. She said the Loaves and Fishes group is large enough that those in the organization are able to get such products out quickly.

Hood said those who receive help often ask how they can help. She said The Salvation Army’s kettle campaign during Christmas time now will become even more important.

“The kettle becomes huge,” Hood said. “My clients are always grateful. It’s humbling. … They always ask how they can repay. I encourage them to come out and ring bells for us.

GENEVA – After more than an hour of debate, Geneva aldermen voted, 8-2, Tuesday against a request to amend the list of permitted uses in the Eagle Brook planned unit development to include a tattoo shop.

One of the issues for the council was the fact the planned unit development was large – from Fabyan Parkway to Glen Eagle with Bent Tree on the east and Randall Road on the west – and the notifications of the requested text amendment did not include all of the property owners.

“This is a pretty big deal,” 2nd Ward Alderman Donald Cummings said. “This is a big PUD and I have to vote no on the first motion.”

But 1st Ward Alderman Mike Bruno said the previous tenant there was a tanning salon.

“The distinction is a tanning salon is what is permitted seems to be exactly the same thing as a tattoo parlor,” Bruno said. “Which comes down to be a judgment … on the character of tattoo parlors. … I don’t find that distinction that I can justify of tanning salon: cool. Tattoo parlor: not cool.”

Bruno and 1st Ward Alderman Chuck Brown were the only two “yes” votes.

Although aldermen acting as the committee of the whole last week voted 5-4 against the request, the petitioner, Ramiro Guillen, appealed the denial to the City Council.

Guillen wanted to open a tattoo shop, Artistic Theories & Gallery at 1871 S. Randall Road.

At last week’s discussion,

there was only one issue; this week, aldermen considered first a text amendment, then a special use permit. If the first issue did not pass, they would not have to act on the second one.

Attorneys for other owners in the business district also argued the majority of owners did not want the tattoo shop included among permitted uses.

Guillen said if the council did not support his petition, he would consider opening a shop in another business district in Geneva that allows tattoo parlors among its uses.

A woman in the 600 block of East Victoria Circle in North Aurora reported to police last week that she has been getting harassing phone calls from unknown males claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation or a local police agency, including the North Aurora Police Department, accord-

ing to a news release from the North Aurora Police Department.

The callers claimed the woman’s husband had been defrauding the government or owed back taxes and they have an arrest warrant for both of them, the release stated.

The callers told her they could avoid an arrest by paying.

When the victim questioned the callers further, they became belligerent, profane and threatened to kill her and her family.

Usually, the caller ID showed the calls were com-

ing from New York or Washington, D.C., but most recently they started showing as coming from the North Aurora Police Department, the release stated.

“One of our officers was present with the victim when three calls came in that showed the North Aurora Police phone number on the caller ID,” North Aurora police said in a statement. “The first caller claimed to be with the FBI and the IRS, another claimed to be from the Oswego Sheriff’s Office, and the last claimed to be from the Oswego Police Department.

Village administrator praises ‘Shop Elburn First’ campaign entries

The Elburn Economic Development Committee for the past few weeks has been inviting interested parties to submit designs as part of a contest. The deadline to submit entries was midnight Monday.

Village Administrator Erin Willrett said she has received two entries. One of the entries included seven different designs.

“The two we received are very professional,” Willrett said. She said the Elburn Chamber of Commerce also might have received additional entries, but she wasn’t

able to check because the office was closed Tuesday.

The Elburn Economic Development Committee will review the entries Sept. 12 and choose a winner, Willrett said. The winning artist will receive a gift basket featuring items from local restaurants and stores.

North Aurora police warned residents to be suspicious of anyone who calls unexpectedly demanding cash.

“If your relative was really in custody, they would

be allowed to call you themselves,” the release stated.

“Verify any emergencies by calling other family and friends before sending money. If there was a warrant for your arrest, you would be asked to turn yourself in at the nearest police department, not wire money to avoid arrest. If you have even the slightest doubt, look up the agency phone number yourself and call to verify the information.”

Those residents who think they might have been the victim of a scam are urged to call the North Aurora Police Department at 630-897-8705.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R–Sugar Grove, said he will seek an override this fall of a speed-limit bill he sponsored that was vetoed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Aug. 26.

Quinn vetoed Senate Bill 2015, which would have raised the speed limit on Illinois tollways to 70 miles per hour. He cited studies from the Illinois State Toll High-

way Authority that indicate motorists already are driving above the speed limit on the tollways.

Quinn also referenced his veto of Senate Bill 930, which increases the speed limit for large trucks on interstate highways.

“As with Senate Bill 930, the convenience of increased speeds for drivers on Illinois tollways does not outweigh the safety risks to children, families and our dedicated

public servants.”

Given the widespread support the bill received earlier this year, Oberweis appears likely to have more than enough votes to override Quinn’s veto during Illinois legislators’ fall session. Senate Bill 2015 was passed by a 111-4 vote of the House of Representatives on May 29 and by a 48-6 vote of the Senate on May 21.

“He used to say to sell ‘Let the will of the people be the

law of the land,’ ” Oberweis said of Quinn in a phone interview on Tuesday. “In this case, he didn’t want to let the will of the people be the law.”

Oberweis said many academic studies indicate it’s not speed that kills, but variation of speed that kills between motorists. A higher speed limit would reduce those speed variations in traffic and those that attempt to weave past slower drivers.

Oberweis also said people

are more likely to get into an accident on a two-lane county highway than a toll highway where traffic is generally separated by concrete barriers. A higher speed limit would encourage more people to use the toll highways, thus adding revenue to the tollway system, as well, Oberweis said.

“Many senators and representatives support this bill,” Oberweis said. “It’s clearly a bipartisan effort.”

First 11th Congressional District Foster-Senger debate set for Oct. 23

She welcomed being free from the rheumatoid arthritis that had attacked and imprisoned her body for more than 25 years. She believed absolutely that she would be reunited with her parents, Arnold and Anne Hall, cousin and friend, Harold “Bosco” Hall, and her many friends whose lives had ended too soon.

She was born on March 1, 1951, at Community Hospital in Geneva.

Karen grew up in Batavia loved by her family and friends, formed permanent bonds with the community, and believed it to be an ideal place to grow up and live. She also loved the romance of the old Southwest.

She went to school in Denver and upon graduation she lived and worked in San Diego. An association with friends in San Diego led her to a job in Madison where she made more lifelong friends. Karen loved interacting with people and was always up for a party.

Karen touched many people’s lives over the years. She held her friends, family, and co-workers close to her throughout her life. She endured the years of RA’s debilitation with a grace, positive attitude and an unyielding strength that was inspirational. Once retired she did volunteer work at RSVP, a community service, arranging rides to doctor appointments for those in need.

She was known for her passion for birds; she loved raising cockatiels and provided many households with bright, outgoing pets. An avid supporter of animal rights Karen asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Anderson Animal Shelter,

ments, Illinois Medicaid paid $13,471 for the boy’s medical bills, and there was a lien from Medicaid in the amount of $1,352.37.

This summer, District 303 and Hunley agreed to settle the matter for $15,000 to be paid by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, court documents show.

scribed the amount as a “reasonable sum” for the district’s “pro rata share of liability, if any.”

A portion of the settlement was to be placed in a restricted trust account for the boy’s medical expenses or other discretionary needs between now and when he will turn 18, which is in 2023, court records show.

Court documents indicate the settlement also covered such expenses as attorney’s fees, the Medicaid lien and reimbursement for work time lost and costs incurred by Hunley.

The lawsuit against District 303 was dismissed with prejudice, which means Hunley cannot file another case on the same claim.

Fire Department to conduct hydrant tests ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Fire Department will be conducting a hydrant flow test from 10 to 11 a.m. today at 2057 Lincoln Highway.

Residents might experience rust in the water during or immediately after the testing procedure, according to a news release.

The water is safe; however, residents might want to refrain from doing laundry until the water is clear, the

Sitting next to McMillan was another Sugar Grove resident, Brenton McCuan.

McCuan, 22, had a green 1953 Chevrolet pickup truck, which he said he drives quite a bit.

“It’s just a fun truck to drive,” McCuan said.

The vehicle McCuan had at the show had corner windows, something he said was optional. He said the windows create a bit of a blind spot.

McCuan said he had been interested in classic cars for a long time. He said his father gave him a 1962 Buick Invicta when McCuan graduated from high school. As crowds of people walked through the display of vehicles, McCuan explained the appeal of such cars, at least for him.

“It’s unusual,” he said.

“It’s a way to look at the way things were made back then, compared to now.”

ELBURN – Tim McMillan stood near his shiny red 1990 GMC Suburban fire vehicle, offering a simple reason for why he had acquired the vehicle he was showing off Saturday at Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez’s annual car show.

“How many people do you know, besides the fire department, that have one?” asked McMillan, 46, a Sugar Grove resident.

McMillan was among the estimated 140 participants at the show, the last that Perez will present as sheriff. Perez is not running for re-election.

Republican Don Kramer and Democrat Willie Mayes will vie for the position in the November election, and Kramer and Mayes were at the event.

Perez said he will be retiring after his term ends, but he said he intends to continue putting on the car show each year. It is a charity event, and

proceeds benefit a different cause each year at the Martin Family Farm. On Saturday, Make-A-Wish Illinois was the designated charity. At least $11,000 was raised by the event.

Perez said there were about 120 cars participating in the event and about 20 motorcycles. But he said it was most exciting that the spectators lot was full. In the previous two years, rainy weather had limited the number of participants and spectators. He said the car show is a good event to stage near the end of his term, adding, “I always wanted to end on a positive note.”

Those at the show were able to check out the vehicles parked at the farm, as well as purchase food and drinks and participate in a raffle.

At the show, McMillan said the fire vehicle he brought was unique among his collection. He has eight muscle cars he also will bring to such events. He said he has been

Kraft Foods Group is voluntarily recalling 7,691 cases of select varieties of regular Kraft American Singles Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product, according to a news release from the Kane County Health Department. A supplier did not store an ingredient used in the product in accordance with Kraft’s temperature standards.

While unlikely, it could create conditions that could lead to premature spoilage and/or food borne illness; therefore, the company is issuing the recall as a precaution, states the release. Kraft has had no immediate consumer illness complaints for the product associated with the recall. The affected product is limited to four varieties with “Best When Used By” dates of February 20, 2015, and February 21, 2015.

Consumers who purchased any of these products should not eat them. They should return them to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund.

Spectators filled the sidewalks on Main Street between Kennebec and Pleasant streets where the challenge’s race course was located. Each team has one person sit on the toilet while the two other members push the entire creation around several cones.

Teams are required to switch drivers at the halfway point of the course. Brenna Miller, 9, of Maple Park said her nervousness before the event was replaced by excitement as the races continued. She participated in the race this year for the first time to compete against her brother Jack, 11.

MAPLE PARK – Before the start of the 10th annual Toilet Bowl Challenge on Saturday, Jon Ausbury made sure his team completed a practice run on the race course.

Ausbury said he wanted to make sure his partners, daughter Bridgett, 19, and fellow Maple Park resident Hazis Azemi, could make turns on the team’s toilet bowl on wheels without tipping or falling over. The strategy worked because the team, aptly named The Turdles, won the event Saturday.

The Toilet Bowl Challenge was held on Main Street during the annual Maple Park Fun Fest. The Turdles raced five times in multiple heats to win the championship, which included a $100 prize. The two other entries in the challenge were named Minecraft and

out their teams with two other sister-brother pairs; Madeline, 14, and Owen Bogathy, 12, of Cedar Lake, Indiana, and Delilah, 8, and Carter Askew, 11, of Maple Park.

The sibling rivalry ended on a good note for both teams.

The all-boy Minecraft team won second place and $50, and the all-girl Dr. Poo team won $100 for most original racing commode.

“We definitely have more bragging rights than when we just had third place,” said Madeline Bogathy, whose team also took home $25 for the No. 3 finish.

All three toilets used in the race have made appearances at previous races. The Turdles were sponsored by the Maple Park Lions Club, of which Ausbury is a member. The Lions Club keeps the toilet and changes the theme every year, Ausbury said.

Dolce Hotels named manager of the Q Center in St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A worldwide operator of hotels, resorts and conferences centers was named manager of the Q Center in St. Charles, according to a news release issued Monday.

Rockleigh, New Jersey– based Dolce Hotels and Resorts will oversee the center, located at 1405 N. 5th Ave. in St. Charles. The management transition was effective Tuesday and the process will continue through Dec. 15, said Steven Rudnitsky, president and CEO of Dolce Hotels and Resorts, in a phone interview.

The Q Center currently is owner-operated with outside suppliers, Rudnitsky said.

Dolce’s primary objective is to leverage its global customer base to increase occupancy at the 1,042-room Q Center, he said in the interview. “[Dolce] will develop an enhanced offering for meeting planners and groups who count on the Q Center to offer a state-of-the-art experience,” Rudnitsky wrote in the release.

“The features that make Q Center a preferred destination for meetings will be complemented by the service elements and operational skills that distin-

guish the Dolce brand name.”

The Q Center is Dolce’s first conference hotel in the Chicago area and its third property in the Midwest, following the opening of The Alexander, A Dolce Hotel, in Indianapolis in 2013, according to release.

The Dolce system has 26 properties that includes more than 5,000 rooms in 10 states, Canada and Europe.

Dolce Hotels and Resorts is one of the premier names in conference center and hotel management, wrote John O. Niemann Jr., president and chief executive officer of Q Center LLC, in the release.

“We believe Dolce shares our focus and dedication to outstanding customer service,” wrote Neimann Jr., speaking for the property owner.

Dolce will implement various programs at the Q Center, including Thoughtful Food for Thoughtful Minds, which offers customizable culinary experiences for meeting attendees, according to the release.

The Q Center features 150,000 square feet of function space certified by the International Association of Conference Centers, five restaurants and lounges and a 4,500-squarefoot fitness center on a 95-acre campus, the release said.

Selling visas is smart if the U.S. gets its money’s worth BLOOMBERG NEWS This summer’s scenes of ragged Central American children and teenagers crammed into makeshift detention centers didn’t exactly affirm Lady Liberty’s invitation to “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

Rest assured, however, that your well-rested, your rich, your coddled elites face their own difficulties opening the golden door to U.S. citizenship. Exhibit A is the dysfunctional U.S. program that’s meant to grant foreign investors green cards in return for investments in new U.S. enterprises that create jobs.

Here’s how it’s supposed to work: A foreign investor ponies up $1 million for a U.S. business that creates at least 10 full-time jobs within two years. Or, puts just $500,000 in a venture located in a “targeted employment area” – certain narrowly defined rural areas, or places where the unemployment rate is 150 percent of the national average.

In return, the investor (and his or her spouse and children) can apply for a green card. The U.S. sets aside 10,000 visas a year to be issued in this way.

In theory, the so-called EB-5 visa program should draw new capital where it’s badly needed, from investors willing to accept a lower rate of return in exchange for the benefits of U.S. residency. And its promise should only increase in the decade ahead, with the number of centa-millionaires set to double in India and China – two countries where demand for U.S. visas is high.

In practice, though, the program has been something between a boondoggle and a bureaucratic fiasco. The investments it has attracted have flowed not so much to risky manufacturing or technology businesses as to big real estate ventures that don’t need help. Swanky neighborhoods have been designated as targeted employment areas in order to attract investments – for instance, in an attempt to revive Washington’s Watergate Hotel. The Securities and Exchange Commission has investigated several EB-5 ventures for straight-out lying to foreign investors and stealing their money.

What’s needed, to help the EB-5 program realize its potential, are ways to ensure that the investment money is channeled to the places where it can make a difference.

That means more stringent, and honest, designations of targeted employment areas and better scrutiny of the business ventures involved.

It also means improved data collection and the speedier process of applications. And how about raising that $500,000 price of admission, which was set in 1990 and is lower than for similar programs in Cyprus, Ireland, Malta and Portugal.

Some, but not all, of these ideas for improving the EB-5 program are contained in the immigration bill that was passed by the Senate last spring, and is now awaiting action by the House of Representatives. A country where legislators from opposing parties actually worked together to turn smart ideas into good laws – now that would be a country worth investing in.

I don’t see how one cancels out the other. Mr. Pioch assumes that the two are mutually exclusive ideas. I disagree. In actuality, the way we treat animals is often indicative of how we treat others.

A person who wants clean, ethical living conditions for animals also tends to want the same for humans.

legislation to end puppy mills and dog fighting is the same candidate who supports protection for all against domestic violence – a candidate like Dennis Anderson.

Whereas, a candidate who doesn’t support a bill to make it illegal for parents to take kids to animal fights is the same type of candidate who would vote against the Violence Against Women Act – a candidate like Randy Hultgren.

Lastly, Mr. Pioch states that Randy Hultgren’s job is “ ...

caring for [constituents’] general welfare and ensuring that our government is functioning according to the constitution.” So, I ask, when was Mr. Hultgren doing this? Was it when he was the only member of the Illinois delegation to vote against re-opening the government?

If that’s how Mr. Hultgren ensures the government is functioning, I say thanks, but no thanks, to Randy Hultgren on Nov. 4.

East takes tune-up Saints ease into conference play with home sweep

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – While the student cheering section might have been a little off key at Tuesday’s girls volleyball match at St. Charles East, the Saints were in near perfect harmony.

Inspired by Red, White and Blue Day, Saints supporters joined in the singing of the National Anthem before the contest, changing the last line to “home of the SAINTS!” to make clear who they were cheering for – and the fact that not all of them were natural singers.

The Saints, on the other hand, were in tune regardless of who was on the court as they defeated West Chicago, 25-16, 25-18 in an Upstate Eight Conference River match.

“We started off a little slow but I think we came back and started to play our game,” said middle blocker Mikaela Mosquera, who tallied five kills and three assists. Teammates Megan Schildmeyer and Riley Schumacher also contributed five kills.

Again in the second game, West Chicago (0-3, 0-1 UEC River) was able to keep pace early

but eventually East pulled away. The comfortable leads gave Kull a chance to try out new plays on the court.

“At this time of the season you want to try different things – getting different options going on, so we were trying to run some different things,” Kull said. “The results were very good.”

It was the UEC River debut for youthful West Chicago.

“I think they handled themselves pretty well. I thought they stayed calm and at times played right with them,” said Wildcats coach Kris Hasty about her squad that features three sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup.

“I think it’s just a matter of experience and having more confidence in ourselves.”

“These guys never quit; they never give up. It’s just been really fun to watch for the last five months. Just an incredible group of guys, an incredible staff and it’s just been fun,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said.

“Everybody enjoys coming to the field every day, working and doing everything. I know winning helps, but it also helps that people enjoy doing their job and everybody gets along and plays well together and practices well together and rides the bus well together. needed a break, he was running the ball great, too, and I know we’ve got a great runner in [quarterback Kyle Novotney]. Everyone just fought and scrapped for every yard.

How critical was it to start the season on a good note with this win? … It just feels good. Coach said this was kind of a swing game, so coming out and getting this ‘W’ puts us in a good position for later in this season.

What’s your toughest class so far this year?

Probably pre-calc honors. It’s pretty tough as a junior, but I’ll be fine with it.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some tricky homework, who would it be and why?

Briggs’ day away not worthy of angst Now that most of Chicago has climbed all over Lance Briggs for taking a personal day on Labor Day I’ve got to tell you guys, I think you’re wrong.

Many of you are entitled to personal days at your jobs, aren’t you? I am, and it’s exactly what it’s called, a personal day. I don’t have to give any explanations. I just use it for what I have to. You do, too.

Stuff happens.

Why exactly should Briggs be treated differently?

But that’s not actually the point is it, because most of you think Briggs could have taken care of this at a more convenient time for his teammates and you.

Last fall I had occasion to spend about an hour with White Sox Hall Of Famer, Frank Thomas in the green room at Comcast Sports Network. The “Big Hurt” was all jacked about his new restaurant, The Big Hurt Brewhouse he was sure would be opening in Berwyn in February.

A story in the Tribune five days ago reported that Thomas now hopes to open the doors sometime next month.

It is extremely unlikely that Briggs actually planned this distraction. Like almost every restaurant ever opened there were probably delays.

I think it’s more likely Briggs tried to do the best he could by his teammates and his business partners.

Suppose it became obvious a month or two ago his opening was going to bump into the season and he looked for the least possible distraction.

He didn’t ask out of training camp or the preseason.

Briggs knew weeks ago when he went to Marc Trestman the team would be off Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. By taking Monday he created a five-day window where he could travel reasonably through time zones, take care of his business and come back ready.

What did he miss Monday, a glorified walk-through? On normal Mondays in season the players are either given an extra day off if they win, or they might stretch, get loose and

I think the head coach did absolutely the right thing by allowing his veteran all pro to do absolutely nothing wrong.

I do find it interesting that there seems to be no outrage or indignation about another All Pro, Brandon Marshall’s plan to spend every Tuesday this season traveling to and from New York to be a TV star.

I guess it’s because he doesn’t have to use his personal days.

Marshall’s success as a Bear is a great story. Say what you will about his off – the field and locker room issues prior to coming to Chicago.

He has reinvented himself as a Bear, become somewhat of a team leader and his behavior has been clean as a freshly fallen coat of snow.

I say somewhat of a team leader because I suspect strongly there are those in the Bears locker room who aren’t all in on the “new” Marshall, specifically his addiction to the spotlight. But hey, what good is an enormous ego if you don’t get to feed it.

I’ve done what Marshall is about to attempt, less than 24 – hour traveling TV gigs, when I was still in my 30’s and it is exhausting. There are delays, mechanical issues and weather. It’s a horrible idea!

Leave Trestman alone.

Marshall doesn’t need his permission or blessing to travel this road, and it’s a safe bet the boss is none – to – thrilled.

It’s interesting, offense good so Marshall’s cool, defense bad, Briggs must be the villain?

I think you all might really want to take another look.

She has a stake in the cause, but she’s keen for a change and it’s that motivation that drives her to conceal her gender and take up arms against the Confederacy. Constance becomes Ash Thompson who then becomes Gallant Ash after an act of gallantry witnessed by fellow soldiers. Author Laird Hunt has created a heroic, intrepid warrior with superlative skills as a sharpshooter and a survivor.

But this is not a war novel about a woman trying to pass as a man. Ash’s identity is not the central issue though it’s certainly the underlying premise for this book. And Ash’s struggles are not gender-based. Ash is a complex, mysterious character we never entirely trust even though she’s speaking to us directly and candidly throughout “Neverhome.” We wonder: What aren’t we seeing? What is she withholding?

Ash passes easily for a man, trains with other enlistees until deemed battle ready at which time they all march South to battle. She has a running dialogue with her dead mother. “I won’t run,” she vows. There is something about fear that Ash must test and investigate.

Among the most interesting aspects of this spare, lovely novel is the beautiful relationship Ash develops with her colonel and commanding officer.

It’s clear he sees more of Ash than most have taken the time to see, and he enjoys conversing with her. Some vilify Ash, perhaps because of her bravery, seeming good luck in battle and her wits. False accusations limit her advancement.

Ash’s adventure turns horrible and harrowing when bounty hunters kidnap her and a couple of other soldiers.

An adroit chameleon and, by now, accustomed to killing, she escapes and eventually finds her way back to her company.

The savage war breaks everyone down eventually. The colonel and his handsome cousin/brother are no exception, and neither is Ash. Injured and left for dead after yet another round of carnage, she frees herself from under a fallen tree trunk and, half dead, finds shelter and a return to health in the home of a nurse who takes a fancy to her. When Ash makes plans to leave and head home, the nurse betrays her and Ash is commit-

What is immunotherapy?

Dear Reader: Immunotherapy refers to treatments that work by enhancing or suppressing the body’s own immune system.

In some diseases – cancer, for example – the immune system appears ineffective in eliminating the “foreign” cancer cells.

Immunotherapy is an attempt to strengthen the immune system in its fight against the cancer.

In some diseases caused by viruses, not enough of the body’s own natural anti-viral molecules (like the interferons) are produced by the body.

In still other diseases – autoimmune diseases, for example – the disease is caused by an immune system attack against the body’s own healthy tissues. In this case, immunotherapy is an attempt to quiet down the overactive immune system.

Immunotherapy for cancer has recently had some dramatic successes in treating kidney cancer, skin cancer (particularly deadly melanoma), certain types of leukemia and lymphoma and certain types of breast cancer.

Your immune system has some natural capacity to recognize and destroy cancer cells.

A good example of immunotherapy against viral diseases is the use of interferons produced in a laboratory against serious chronic viral infections, such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Immunotherapy against in-

flammatory autoimmune diseases also is at a more mature stage than for cancer. This is particularly true for rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis. In each of these diseases, certain molecules made by the immune system (called cytokines) orchestrate much of the damage done by the immune system. New drugs (called “cytokine-blockers” or “biologics”) can dramatically “cool off” the destructive immune attack.

One of the most successful forms of immunotherapy involves monoclonal antibodies. These laboratory-created antibodies precisely target particular antigens on the surfaces of particular cells.

When they latch onto their target, they can directly or indirectly destroy the cell carrying the target on its surface.

There also are entirely new and different forms of immunotherapy under development, some with enormous potential.

After several decades of work, immunotherapy finally seems to be on the verge of providing valuable treatments for human diseases.

It’s defined as a pattern of violent behavior that someone uses against a girlfriend or a boyfriend. Abuse can cause injury, but it doesn’t have to be physical. 8. She is giving up things that used to be important to her, such as spending time with friends or other activities.

When I teach a class, I try to get my students to think like bridge players, not to bid the first thing that comes into their minds or to play the card nearest their thumbs.

This deal from a social game is instructive. What do you think of the auction? What should happen in four hearts after West leads the spade king?

When South bid two hearts, though, North should have passed. And South, with a minimum 15 high-card points, ought to have passed out three hearts.

In four hearts, South probably has to play the trump suit without loss. To do that, he can either cash dummy’s ace, playing West for a singleton king, or lead his queen, hoping East has a singleton jack. They are mathematically equal, but leading the queen is better because West might fail to cover with king-doubleton.

However, before that, South won the first trick and returned his second spade. Here, West defended perfectly, winning with his queen and shifting to a club.

However, when declarer won with his ace and led the heart queen, West erred by playing low, so the contract made.

Unanimous approval for interim superintendent KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland School District 302 Board was unanimous Tuesday in approving Renee Goier as the district’s interim superintendent.

It was a contrast to the previous week’s meeting, during which board member Tony Valente voted against hiring Ken Sorrick for the role. Sorrick had enough support and still was named in the position, but by the next day, he had submitted his letter of resignation, citing Valente’s remarks and demeanor.

That made Tuesday’s meeting necessary, as the board’s plan was to hire an interim superintendent to replace its departing superintendent, Jeff Schuler, whose last day at Kaneland was Friday. Schuler was to start Tuesday as the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200.

On Tuesday, Valente indicated he was pleased with the selection of Goier. He noted she lives in Sugar Grove Geier most recently worked as the superintendent in Deerfield School District 109.

“We interviewed her, and she was just phenomenal,”

Valente said.

Cheryl Krauspe, president of Kaneland’s school board, said Goier is to make $80,000 for 100 days. Sorrick was to make $90,000 for 100 days, but he also was to lead the district’s search for a long-term replacement for Schuler.

Krauspe said Goier will not have that duty.

Krauspe praised Goier as an excellent candidate, saying Goier has experience at every level of education, from preschool to college, and added “she has strengths that Dr. Sorrick didn’t have.”

“Of all of our candidates, Dr. Goier’s perspective and experience, throughout every level of her K-12 career, is by far the deepest,” Krauspe said in a statement read after the vote. “Dr. Goier has exceptional administrative skills. She is well-versed and skillfully applies her knowledge in the areas of curriculum, student assessment, finance, human resources, law, policy and collective bargaining.”

Krauspe said Goier will start in her new role today, “bright and early” in the morning. A news release distributed to the media indicated Goier is a Sugar Grove resident “with a vested interest in the success of Kaneland schools.” Later, board members Teresa Witt and Peter Lopatin said that Goier has grandchildren who

improving district collaboration and efficiency, increasing professional learning opportunities for teachers and reorganizing administrative structure and human resource practices, according to the release.

“She is known for her interpersonal and communication skills and her principal mentorship,” Krauspe said in her statement. “She consistently contributes to national, state and local professional organizations.

Her decision-making is logical and based upon what is best for students. This combination of knowledge and application resulted in her school districts being recognized for their innovative programs, excellent student achievement and financial soundness.”

Asked whether she anticipated that Goier’s term will go more smoothly than Sorrick’s time with the district, Krauspe pointed out the vote to approve Goier was unanimous.

Before the board went into closed session, a Sugar Grove resident, Tony Cargola, spoke in public session to support Valente. Cargola said he would “hate to see Kaneland become a stepping stone.”
