Police: Stolen St. Charles Honda destroyed by fire

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles police and fire departments are investigating a car fire that occurred Sunday morning on the city’s east side, St. Charles Fire Battalion Chief Marty Friel said.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 5:56 a.m.

Sunday for a car fire at the intersection of Cambridge and Cumberland Green drives in St. Charles, Friel said. St. Charles fire units found a 2005 Honda Civic on fire and were on scene for about 90 minutes, he said.

“We put the fire out, and the scene was turned over to police,” Friel said.

“One of my investigators is working [the case] right now.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Friel said.

“This is the second stolen car from that area within the last month,” he wrote.

Another vehicle parked next to the Civic sustained minor heat damage, Friel said.

An estimated cost of damages from the incident was not available Sunday afternoon.

• Mendo Trusenko, 25, of the 600 block Lakeside Circle Drive, Wheeling, was charged Friday, Sept. 4, with driving under the influence.

• Kevin B. Oehlerking, 43, of the 400 block of Woodward Avenue, Geneva, was charged Sunday, Aug. 30, with battery and driving with a suspended license. According to police reports, Oehlerking slapped the victim and tore the victim’s shirt off.

• Joshua T. Taylor, 33, of the 1200 block of South Batavia Avenue, Batavia, was charged Monday, Sept. 7, with possession of mari-

juana.

• Sixteen pieces of handmade jewelry valued at $501 were reported stolen Monday, Sept. 7, from an art booth at Island Park.

• William Zarco, 35, of the1400 block of Maplewood, Chicago, was charged Monday, Sept. 7, with driving under the influence and driving on the wrong side of the road.

• Landscaping equipment and tools valued at $1,725 was reported stolen Monday, Sept. 4, from the 500 block of Fluid Power Drive.

According to police reports, a grill employees used to cook their lunches also was taken.

ST. CHARLES – Anderson Animal Shelter will present a free planned giving seminar in September.

Planned giving is a charitable tool that lets people support the shelter while fulfilling their own financial goals and objectives.

Anderson Animal Shelter plans adoption event

SOUTH ELGIN – Anderson Animal Shelter, at 1000 S. LaFox St., South Elgin, has planned a FALL in Love adoption event for Wednesday.

Beginning at 6 p.m., adoption fees will be waived for the first 25 cats or kittens adopted.

According to a news release, Anderson has received more than 600 homeless cats and kittens this year.

Adoptions will occur on a first-come, first-served basis, and regular adoption policies will apply.

America in Bloom praises St. Charles parks

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The judges of a national contest praised St. Charles for its parks, according to a news release.

Top honors for the 2015 America in Bloom awards program were announced Saturday in Holland, Michigan, at an annual ceremony, the release stated.

The city of St. Charles received a four bloom rating out of a possible five and received a special mention for its landscaped areas, according to the release.

“We commend the [St. Charles] park district for the variety and attractiveness of the many parks in St. Charles,” America in Bloom judges wrote in the release.

“Various parks offer passive and active activities, including a beautifully designed strolling park, [Mt. St. Mary Park], with changing sculptures each year, as well as a golf course, ball fields and many woodland areas.”

gram,” Lewis said. “I really enjoyed it.”

America in Bloom judges Jack Clasen and Meg Whitmer visited St. Charles and other communities of similar

populations, the release stated.

The judges spent two days touring each town, meeting municipal officials, residents and volunteers, according to

the release. Other competitors in the 30,000 to 40,000 population category were Santa Paula, California; Hopkinsville, Kentucky; and Saratoga, California.

Saratoga, California, is the city that won the category.

Before representing St. Charles at the awards program, Lewis said she was fortunate to work with an outstanding group of people who tirelessly gave their time and talents to make St. Charles a contender in the competition.

All participants were evaluated on six criteria – overall impression, environmental awareness, heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays, the release stated. Additionally they were judged on their community involvement across municipal, residential and commercial sectors.

Each participant will receive a detailed written evaluation that can be used as a guide to future improvements.

St. Charles will receive its copy of the evaluation this week, and Lewis said she plans to review the findings with the local America in Bloom committee.

After brain surgery, Campton Hills woman becoming a competitive runner

asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A few years ago, Christie Gillespie suffered from up to 10 partial seizures a day, which limited her activities and reduced her energy. And when those were coupled with grand mal seizures, her activities were limited even more, she said, noting she couldn’t drive.

“I was in survival mode,” the Campton Hills resident said.

About two years ago, Gillespie said, she underwent brain surgery to end the seizures, and this summer she began running competitively with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago 10K. On Sunday, she participated in the Chicago Half Marathon.

Now in its 19th year, the event – which also offers a 5K option – attracts “a pretty massive crowd” that includes people from 48 states and 39 countries, said Scott “Hootie” Hutmacher of Life Time Athletic Events, which produces the Chicago Half Marathon.

The half marathon takes the average runner just more than two hours to finish, he said, noting the average training period is 12 weeks.

Gillespie, 45, didn’t give herself that long to train. It was about August when she decided to enter the half marathon, and she prepared by doing “a lot of running,” she said, noting her three sons – ages 9, 11 and 13 – were “so

Gillespie said she is lucky to even participate. It is a miracle her vision wasn’t impaired by the surgery, which affected her hippocampus and part of her right temporal lobe, she said, gesturing to her scar shaped like a backward question mark.

She said the initial months of recovery were excruciating.

“I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” she said. “I didn’t realize how sick I was until I was cured.”

Of running, she said, it is a personal accomplishment to do an activity she didn’t think she would be able to do

again, and it shows her sons they can do anything they put their minds to.

Going into the half marathon, Gillespie said she hoped to finish the 13.1 miles in two hours or less.

“I’m going to give it my all and see what happens,” said Gillespie, whose favorite songs to run to include “Stronger Than You Think”

by Fireflight and “Edge of My Life” by Manafest.

According to the race results, she met her goal with 54 seconds to spare and placed 54th of 395 in her age group and 2,104th of 8,188 overall.

In an email Monday, Gillespie wrote the experience was incredible and worth all the training. She noted she hopes those reading her story will be encouraged to never give up.

“Upon finishing, I was overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment,” she wrote. “To actually be able to participate, let alone finish, after everything I had been through is a miracle from God.” Is a full marathon next for Gillespie?

“I think it’s a good possibility,” she said, “definitely.”

Alzheimer’s walk seeks an end to devastating disease bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If deep purple and bright spirits were enough to cure Alzheimer’s disease, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday at Pottawatomie Park could have done it.

More than 600 walkers – most clad in purple T-shirts declaring “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” – participated in a 3.2-mile walk to raise awareness and money to find a cure.

Mickey Peterson of the Alzheimer’s Association said organizers surpassed their goal of $75,000. According to the walk website, act.alz.org, the St. Charles event raised more than $113,000.

Many were close to people who had known the ravages of the disease, characterized by memory loss, which is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. according to the National Institutes of Health.

“My grandmother had Alzheimer’s, but we didn’t call it that back then,” said Jack DeNormandie of Geneva, who volunteered to register participants. “The cure is so important.”

Julie Olney of St. Charles said she came to support St. Charles East’s team that was part of the walk.

“I’d love to see a cure for that,” Olney said. “It’s a devastating disease. I’d like to

see it abolished.”

Batavia’s Elderday Center team, dressed in bright yellow T-shirts, also participated. Elderday offers a day program for those with dementia. Elderday Director of Programs Mollie Blum said she hoped the team was able to build some awareness.

“We had quite a team this year,” Blum said.

The St. Charles Park District Adult Activity Center’s team included John Wohlert and Robert Trendler of St. Charles; Jean Langlais of Geneva; and Meghan Papke, who supervises the adult activity center.

“I’m here to honor my late mother, who died of Alzheimer’s,” Wohlert said.

“I helped raise some money that will go to Alzheimer’s research and for families caring for Alzheimer’s patients.”

Langlais said: “I’m here to support Alzheimer’s research – and an end to Alzheimer’s.”

Papke said she was on the team to support all of the adult activity center members with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

“We’ve all been impacted

by Alzheimer’s in some way or other with acquaintances or relatives,” Trendler said.

“It is a scourge.”

“I’m here to support and advocate for a cure for Alzheimer’s,” Angelina Lampkin said. “My grandmother ... passed away from complications due to Alzheimer’s.”

Amber Lampkin said her great-grandmother died before she was born.

“This is something important to our family,” Amber Lampkin said. “I’m here supporting everybody.”

This was the fourth year for the team of JPK Walkers participating in honor of Jack Klimtworth.

“I’m in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease in the memory of Grandpa Jack,” their T-shirts proclaim.

“I just hope, eventually, they can find a cure,” said his widow Rita Klimtworth of Florida. “It’s such a devastating disease. My husband lost his memory. He didn’t know me. And it was just very sad.”

Report: Hastert lawyers in talks for possible plea deal KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Associated Press is reporting attorneys for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert have been talking

with prosecutors about a potential plea deal in Hastert’s case.

The AP reported the disclosure came during a federal hearing in Chicago that Hastert didn’t attend. It was

regarding the May indictment that alleged the former speaker agreed to pay $3.5 million to an individual to hide past misconduct. AP and other media outlets reported the payments were intended

to cover up claims of sexual misconduct that happened years ago.

According to the AP, the judge set an Oct. 15 deadline for updates. Hastert served for 20 years as the U.S. repre-

sentative of the 14th Congressional District.

The AP report noted Hastert is charged with violating banking laws and lying to the FBI, adding he remains free on bond.

Jack Allison Young, age 83, longtime resident of Geneva, passed away at Michealsen Health Center on Wednesday, September 23, 2015, surrounded by family.

He was born December 31, 1931, in Aurora, IL, son of Neal Allison and Gladys (Wicks) Young.

Jack graduated from East Aurora High School in 1950 and received his BS in Journalism from University of Illinois in 1954. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. Jack then worked for several years at Caterpillar Tractor in Peoria.

He was a life agent for Equitable Life. Opening his own investment and financial advising firm, Jack A. Young & Associates, Jack simul-

taneously worked as a registered representative, general principal and financial principal of his own security broker-dealer firm and was president and CEO of Chartered Planning, Ltd. Jack served as Chairman for Equitable National Agent’s Forum, was a member of their Hall of Fame and a life-member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Jack served as president of the Aurora Association of Life Underwriters.

He was a longtime active member of Fox Valley Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder and delegate of their General Assembly. He was also president of Tri-City Family Services, chairman of Delnor Community Healthcare Foundation and chairman of Delnor Community Health System when Delnor & Community Hospitals merged and the new hospital was built. As well as being a founding board member of the Kane County Bar Foundation Jack is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in Business & Finance, Who’s Who in the U.S. and Who’s Who in the World.

Jack was also an avid golfer and served as president of Geneva Golf Club and was a member of Geneva Lions Club. With all his activities, Jack found his greatest joy was making memories with his family.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Virginia “Ginny” (Dawson); children, Amy Young of Oregon, WI and Andrew (Megan) of Geneva; grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew and Ethan Cumblad, Kelly O’Brien and Marlee, Andrew “AJ” and Samuel Young; and many other dear relatives and friends.

‘He was a great one at lifting spirits’ Geneva businessman, philanthropist Jack Young dies

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva resident Jack Young was a man of many talents, and from business and financial planning to philanthropy, he served the community he loved, his family and friends said.

Young served as the fourth official president of the board of directors for TriCity Family Services in Geneva. He also was the chairman of Delnor Community Healthcare Foundation and helped in the merging of Delnor and Community hospitals, as well as being a founding board member of the Kane County Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Kane County Bar Association.

“He was a strong supporter ... of this agency all these years,” said James Otepka, executive director of TriCity Family Services, which provides affordable mental health services.

Young was president of the

board of directors in 1979 and 1980, Otepka said. Young was one of three co-chairs who led a successful capital campaign to build its facility in Geneva, Otepka said.

Otepka said he relied on Young for historical perspective, but also as a constant re-

minder of the agency’s mission in the community.

“He beautifully fulfilled the role of agency patriarch,” Otepka said. “He represented in many ways the heart and soul of this agency. … Jack had a wonderful sense of humor. …

He never failed to share with you a funny story. He was a great one at lifting spirits.”

Attorney Lisa Nyuli, also a founding member of the Kane County Bar Foundation in 1996, said as a businessman, Young brought a lot of insight and common sense to the foundation.

The bar foundation set up the children’s waiting center at the Kane County Judicial Center, Nyuli said.

“Jack was very instrumental in developing the children’s waiting room, and ... we did scholarships for law students,” Nyuli said. “Jack always sat on the committees to weed out who was truly needy. He was always such a joy to be around, such a nice, nice man.”

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns had the city’s flags at half-mast in Young’s honor.

“Jack Young epitomized the meaning of servant leader,”

Burns wrote in a text message.

“His business acumen, personal generosity and unrivaled sense of humor made him unique among his peers. On a personal note, I will forever be indebted to Jack for his friendship and support.”

One of Young’s children, Andrew Young of Geneva, said his father “loved his community and the people in it.”

Of all his father achieved, Andrew Young said establishing TriCity Family Services and working to merge the two hospitals were “truly what he loved from a standpoint of philanthropy and giving back to the community – so people would have an opportunity to be cared for.”

“He truly believed in the community and the people who lived here, up and down the Fox Valley,” Andrew Young said.

“He really loved life and he loved being a part of this community, and that shows in what he accomplished around here.”

The visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Saturday at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, 227 Eastside Drive, Geneva.

DeKalb woman charged in Geneva with having gun without permit KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – A woman was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon for having a handgun without a concealed carry permit, according to police reports.

Felicia R. Woods, 40, of the 1100 block of West Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, was charged Sept. 13. The felony charge carries a punishment of one to three years in prison and a possible fine of up to $25,000.

According to police reports, an ofFelicia R. ficer pulled Woods Woods over for speeding at 1:28 a.m. in the 400 block of West State Street. When she opened her glove box to get her registration and insurance, the officer saw a black handgun in there, and

neither she nor her passenger had a concealed right to carry.

Woods also received a written warning for speeding.

According to court records, Woods was released after posting $500 bail, 10

percent of a $5,000 bond that was set. She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 15.

GENEVA – The Geneva District 304 School Board Monday unanimously approved a new budget for its fiscal 2016 that includes more than $101 million in expenditures.

The expenditures show an increase of nearly $500,000 more than last year’s expenditures of $100.6 million, a 0.44 percent increase, officials said.

The board took action after a brief public hearing no one attended.

Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Donna Oberg said the tentative budget has been on display since Aug. 11.

The new spending plan has slightly more than $96 million in revenue, an increase of 0.6 percent or $574,560 more than the $95.5 million revenue in the previous budget.

Oberg said the nearly $5 million budget deficit is being covered by the district’s fund balances.

The fund balance going into the new budget year is nearly $60 million, officials said.

“The biggest piece of the deficit is the debt service and that is being made up through the abatements – it’s the money we set aside [from excess in the education fund] to make [debt] payments over the last couple of years,” Oberg said.

The district has nearly a $22 million payment to make on its debt in the new budget year and Oberg said she is levying around $17 million, a shortfall of more than $5.6 million.

Oberg said another deficit is reflected in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, but that is because she is trying to bring that balance down.

The revenue for that is more than $1.8 million but the expenditure is nearly $2.5 million, leaving a revenue shortfall of nearly $623,000, officials said.

“You’re supposed to levy what you need, so I’m trying to bring that budget down,” Oberg said. “You’re not supposed to have a big balance in there.”

The budget reflects a 1.5 percent increase based on last year’s levy, Oberg said.

“I think it’s a very solid budget and it’s not a big increase,” Oberg said.

The rich are different; they’re better investors

By NOAH SMITH Bloomberg View What if the rich get richer because they know how to invest their money more effectively? New research shows this may be a factor behind the rise in inequality.

Different investors have different levels of sophistication. Why? It might come from varying levels of education. For example, I know what diversification is, and why it works. But other people might not, and might just pick one or two stocks, increasing their risk without boosting their expected return. Research shows that this is one of the biggest mistakes people make, if not the biggest.

Differences in education are dangerous because unsophisticated people generally don’t realize they’re unsophisticated. When you’re ignorant, you also usually don’t realize how ignorant you are. In psychology, this is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. People might learn investment basics from their parents, or from their jobs, or from their hobbies. But if you weren’t lucky enough to learn about investing, how would you even know what you were missing?

This is a problem no matter where you are in the spectrum of financial sophistication. I probably know one or two Wall Street traders who don’t realize how much more they have to learn.

Another reason for information differences is that you can actually buy information with money. The wealthy and the well-funded have access to expensive financial data, which will generally help them earn higher returns. The poor, unable to buy data, will earn lower returns.

Thus, the initial differences in wealth will compound over time, with the rich getting richer faster.

Finance researchers Marcin Kacperczyk, Jaromir Nosal and Luminita Stevens realize that differing levels of sophistication are a fundamental, inevitable feature of finan-

cial markets. In a new paper, they investigate the effect this will have on the distribution of income inequality.

They find, perhaps unsurprisingly, that more sophisticated investors tend to get more capital income in the form of capital gains when their portfolios rise in value, dividends, interest payments and the like. Basically, if you’re a better investor, your money will make more money. The effect is made worse because sophisticated investors are able to snap up valuable assets quickly, pricing the unsophisticated out of the market, or leaving them to pick up the scraps.

But Kacperczyk and the other researches have an even more worrying message. They show that it isn’t just differences in investor sophistication that drive inequality. As society’s average level of sophistication goes up, information-driven inequality may increase. This will happen if informational advantages build on each other – the more you know, the better you understand how to learn more.

If that’s the case, then educating the general populace about finance might actually exacerbate inequality, instead of correcting it.

So, how would we prevent dystopia, in a world where initial differences compound themselves? Taxation of capital income is believed to be one of the most economically harmful kinds of taxes. An alternative might be a higher inheritance tax.

Outside of the tax system, government efforts such as a sovereign wealth fund might be employed to distribute the benefits of capital income more equally. But all of these solutions involve heavy government distortions of the economy. This almost ensures that many economists, along with a large part of the voting public, will be hesitant to give them a full-throated endorsement.

UEC GIRLS GOLF MEET

St. Charles North shines in UEC tournament win

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – A scorecard playoff determined which St. Charles North girls golfer earned medalist honors at Monday’s Upstate Eight Conference tournament at St. Andrews.

Only protocol prohibited North Stars freshman Megan Furtney from walking to at least one other tee box alongside junior teammate Kate Lillie after both shot 3-over par 74s.

“I feel like I could go out and play another 18, you know,” Furtney said. “I really enjoy coming out here and playing.”

That’s been the refrain for most any North athlete at most any course throughout a sterling regular season. On this day, Lillie officially was the event’s top golfer while North perched atop the nineteam field with a score of 310.

Junior Gianna Furrie (79) and freshman Emma Hayes (83) followed Furtney and Lillie, but in a testament to North’s depth, freshman Sarah Arnold’s fifth score of 85 would have counted for each of the other Tri-Cities teams.

Host St. Charles East (328) was runner-up, while Geneva (335) and Batavia (352) were next. North went undefeated during duals and will look to maintain its edge when IHSA Class AA regionals begin next week.

“It’s really exciting to see,” Lillie said, “especially now that we’re going into postseason. … We really feel like we have a chance to do really well at state this year.”

The state meet is set for Oct. 16-17 at Hickory Point in Forsyth. That’s the destination for which East junior Rose Bundy has harnessed her focus throughout the fall.

Bundy took third individually with a 76 but was named the UEC Player of the Year when dual and tournament points were tabulated.

“For me, if I can keep it in the fairways, I’m so good,” Bundy said. “I think right now, it’s clicking. My game, it’s meshing well. And that was two weeks ago. And now,

On the scoreboard outside St. Andrews’ J.J.’s Bar & Grill, top finishers also included Batavia’s Becca Hasemann (77), East’s Nicole Jordan (79) and the Geneva trio of Darby Lillibridge (79), Reilly Krohe (80) and Kendal Fioresi (80).

Of that group, only Hasemann and Krohe are seniors.

“Golf has been really fun,” said Krohe, whose score was a personal best, two strokes better than a recreational round in Myrtle Beach, S.C., two summers ago. “You meet a lot of people. You have a lot of fun

together. Obviously, there’s that competitive edge always there with our coaches focusing on winning, but we also have fun all-around.”

Hasemann, whose nearest teammate, Madi McCoy, carded a 90, appreciated the opportunity to exhale.

Recently fretting over her putting, she found solace during a weekend trip to central Illinois. A prospective collegiate golfer at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Hasemann traveled to watch the Titans compete and also consulted assistant Craig Onsrud, also the pro at Ironwood in Normal.

His tutelage – it’s all mental – settled Hasemann. She otherwise employs a laid-back style.

“That’s how it usually is nowadays: ‘All right, conference is coming up. Cool,’ ” Hasemann said. “I guess that way, I don’t get nervous anymore. I’m kind of like, ‘All right, playing golf again today.’ So I was kind of happy.”

The Tri-Cities schools with join host Burlington Central and four other teams at a regional at Sycamore Golf Club on Oct. 7.

“It felt like tryouts were just yesterday,” Bundy said.

“Yeah, conference means the end of the season, but it’s kind of just the beginning, because now we get to take it to state. … All of this is just prepping for playing now and then regionals and sectionals and state.”

BARTLETT – With her coral shoes and pink sunglasses, St. Charles North runner Audrey Ernst was pretty hard to miss in the Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational girls varsity race Saturday at Sunrise Park.

She also stood out because she led the pack from start to finish.

The sophomore harrier won the race with a time of 17:58, 14 seconds ahead of second-place Addie finisher Maddie Bobosky Marasco from Batavia, Jr. Schaumburg.

E r n s t ’ s first-place finish, coupled with teammates Madison Kaufmann (fifth, 18:48.2) and Ally Suyak (16th, 19:53.5) coming in the top 20, earned the North Stars a third-place team finish with 88 points.

“It was definitely cool to lead the whole time,” Ernst said. “I knew at the end that the Schaumburg girl was right behind me, and she was definitely pushing me right at the end.”

“We haven’t run full strength yet this season,” said North coach Shari Hayes. “We have girls playing soccer, and we have girls that are hurt.

One of our top girls is playing soccer this week; and another girl, who ran well last weekend, is off doing a college visit.

“Our top three ran well today. Madison was sick the last two weeks, so she ran strong today; and Ally ran a better race than she did last weekend.”

While Hayes had to bring up girls for the varsity race out of necessity, Batavia coach Chad Hillman did by design.

He held out his some of usual starters to give other girls experience.

“We’re just looking to solidify some things,” Hillman said of his decision to rest some of his top runners. “It’s a good thing when you have the depth to keep pushing the front run-

Joey Rangel took top honors for North, coming in 11th in the boys race, which was won by Keagan Smith of Huntley.

Rangel’s time of 16:15.8 paced the North Stars to a fourth-place finish. The team’s 133 points just edged out Batavia, which finished with 136.

“Rangel didn’t run as well as we wanted him last week,” said Harrington. “There was something in his attitude today that helped him.”

“I wanted to finish in the top 10 to get a medal, but the end was tough,” Rangel said.

“I passed one guy and then he passed me and I could couldn’t keep up with him.”

The Bulldogs, who also held out a couple of regular starters, tallied 131 points.

Shane Knanishu’s 18thplace finish was tops for the Bulldogs with a time of 16:34.5 Huntley won the boys race with 54 points followed by Fremd (65) and Jacobs (86).

NOTEWORTHY Batavia defense teeing off

There’s no doubt Batavia has an offense as potent as any in the area. But the play of its defense has really made this team into one that could compete for a state title this season.

St. Charles North’s Zach Mettetal was the latest quarterback to face the Bulldogs defense as Batavia cruised to a 48-28 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory to move to 5-0 on the year.

The defense once again sparked the victory.

One of the many times that pressure was applied to Mettetal on Friday night was what coach Dennis Piron called a “hammer blitz” by junior linebacker Connor Stejskal, who hit Mettetal and caused a fumble.

Senior linebacker Zack Majka was right there to scoop up the ball and score a touchdown. North never recovered.

“Defensively with this group, one thing we can always do is get after quarterbacks,” Piron said. “It causes intercep-

tions, fumbles or sacks, and you can’t take that kind of beating all the time.

Teams have to change their game up a little bit, and [Friday night] all of the things we said we could do and wanted to do, happened.”

Although defensive coordinator Matt Holm wasn’t thrilled at a few late scores by the North Stars, the game seemed to be in hand at that point. Piron said he couldn’t have been more proud at how the defense executed exactly what it had planned.

The Bulldogs are averaging 20.8 points allowed a game this year. However, the past three contests have yielded only 16 points a game, including a 28-0 shutout of St. Charles East in Week 4.

Majka and fellow linebacker Colin Thurston man the middle of the field, while senior cornerback Brett Bowman has locked down some of the better receivers in the area this year.

But with a forfeit from Chicago Legal Charter giving the Cadets, now 2-3, a bye this past week, Gibson will have two full weeks to prepare for his next challenge, which comes Saturday at Fenwick.

With Gibson as the signal-caller, Marmion has struggled, but coach Dan Thorpe expects a much stronger performance from Gibson against the Friars.

“We did a lot of drills and he had all the reps last week,” Thorpe said. “He’s a competitor, and although those were two difficult tests, he enjoyed it. He’ll be ready to go this week”

GENEVA – Relocating an operation from Bensenville to Geneva, as the United States Hockey League’s Chicago Steel did before the season, sounds simple enough in suburbanspeak.

But consider that much of the team’s coaching and front office staff had to make significant, cross-country moves, and the scope widens considerably.

The Steel, who began a new era with their 5-1, season-opening win against the Team USA U17 program Saturday at Fox Valley Ice Arena, are coached by one such man.

Dan Muse, 33, a Massachusetts native, spent the past six seasons on the Yale staff before uprooting his young family to the Tri-Cities this summer.

“We’re getting settled in.

We love it. My family and I love it,” Muse said. “This is an unbelievable area, you know.

It’s extremely welcoming.

Everywhere we go, there’s so much to do. The people here are absolutely fantastic, so it’s been great. My wife and my kids have been very happy

Getting acclimated: Not all of the 14 players on the opening night roster who didn’t skate for the Steel last season accompanied the club on last month’s trip to Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Representing the USHL and USA Hockey at the Junior Club World Cup, the Steel scouting department kept churning despite the organization’s bronze medal at the event.

“I think we’ve been taking everything a little bit in stride, you know,” Muse said.

“We knew there was a couple guys that weren’t going to be able to make the trip that we expected to be here. And then also, I think any time you’re putting a team together, there’s some changes that we felt like we needed to make, and we did. … Our scouting staff’s out there, and they’re very active, and as an organization we want to make sure we know what the player pool is.

“I felt like we did that. I was happy with the way we knew the league and felt confident in the players that were out there that we might be able to look into.”

Silver tea sets, vases, jewelry and other objects can be sold at many jewelry stores and antiques shops for the meltdown value. Sterling silver has been about $21 an ounce, but in mid-2015, it was down to about $14 to $15. Of course, most collectible silver in good condition is worth more than when it’s melted down, and pieces made by important companies like Tiffany or Georg Jensen will sell for many times the scrap value. But as older collectors downsize and young buyers search for useful furnishings for new homes, some things have gone down in price. Few brides today ask for a silver tea set or even a set of silverware, so those pieces are selling at bargain prices. It is the lucky couple that inherits a sterling water pitcher by Tiffany & Co. Even luckier are those who get Tiffany silver in Art Nouveau patterns. A water pitcher with raised catfish on a hammered background was estimated at $2,500 to $4,500 at a Rago auction in Lambertville, N.J. There were dents, lost patina, a repair and a monogram, all damage that lowers the value. The unusual pitcher, 8 1/2 inches high, sold for $18,750 because of the fine workmanship, unique design and fame of

Rubber toys deteriorate. Your figures are from 1935 and can’t be fixed, so you should just throw them away. They’re not rare, and are not worth much in good condition.

U.S. for 40 years. My first 32 years were spent in Puerto Rico, so I speak with an accent. My problem is almost everyone I meet asks me where I’m from. I usually try to disguise my discomfort by jokingly asking them to guess.

The truth is, I feel singled out as being different and not belonging. My friends and family tell me I’m being too sensitive, that people are just curious. I say it’s rude to ask such a personal question of a total stranger. Would it be impolite for me to point out that they’re asking for very personal information? Prevent painful tooth decay with daily brushing, flossing Dear Doctor K: What is tooth decay, and how does it happen?

Dear Reader: Tooth decay is a disease of the mouth that can lead to cavities and infection.

But before we start talking about sick teeth, let’s talk about healthy teeth.

Each tooth has one or more roots that are anchored in the bones of the jaw. Since those roots are inside the jaw bone, they are invisible. The part of the tooth that we see, sticking out above the gumline, is the crown.

The crown of the tooth is covered with a hard, whitish material called enamel. The enamel ends at about your gumline, where the root begins. The root of the tooth is covered with a thin layer of another hard, bonelike material called cementum.

Inside the tooth are two other types of dental tissue: dentin and pulp. Dentin is harder than cementum but softer than enamel.

Most of the tooth is dentin, so it is primarily the hard dentin that is doing the work of chewing your food into tiny pieces.

The core of a tooth is a chamber extending from the crown into the roots. Inside this

When the pulp is damaged or infected, the nerves coursing through the pulp make the tooth hurt.

Tooth decay (also known as dental caries) begins with the development of plaque, the sticky, bacteria-laden film that collects on your teeth between brushings.

The bacteria in the plaque “eat” sugar and food that stays in the mouth after eating. When they do that, they give off acid as a waste product. This acid dissolves the outer enamel surfaces of the teeth, causing tiny pits to form.

The earliest stage of decay appears as a white or brown area on a tooth. You can’t see this white spot, but your dentist can.

If decay is caught at this stage, there’s a good chance it can be stopped and reversed. Treatments include limiting sugary

snacks and beverages and taking fluoride supplements. Your dentist can also apply fluoride, an antiseptic or a sealant to your teeth to stop the progress of early decay.

Unchecked, bacterial acid will bore a hole in the enamel. This is a cavity. At this point, the tooth may ache. It may also be sensitive to hot, cold or sweet foods.

Without treatment, the cavity gets bigger, extending into the soft tissue of the pulp and causing an infection called pulpitis.

The infected pulp tissue swells, squeezing neighboring blood vessels. This cuts off the blood supply to the pulp, and the pulp dies. People with pulpitis usually feel severe pain. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

I shouldn’t need to tell you how to prevent tooth decay, but I will anyway: Brush and floss every day, and minimize sugary snacks and beverages.

Are first-born kids more intelligent?

Dr. Wallace: My husband and I have three teens, ages 17, 16 and 15. Our daughters are the oldest and the youngest, and our son is the middle child.

Our oldest daughter is always telling her siblings that she is the most intelligent of the three of them because it has been proven that the first child is more intelligent than all of the following children in a family. Our middle and youngest children disagree.

We are blessed that all three of our children do very well academically and enjoy their studies. I stay out of the “debate,” but will admit that somewhere I read that, indeed, the first-born child is usually the most gifted because of having a higher IQ. Is this fact or fiction? – Mom, Lansing, Michigan Dear Mom: Recently, the University of Illinois analyzed 377,000 high school students regarding their birth orders’ effect on personality and intelligence. The study was published in the Journal of Research in Personality and was touted as the largest study in history regarding birth order.

The study found that first-borns typically have a one-point higher IQ over younger siblings. However, researchers considered the difference to be meaningless.

Simply put, birth order has very little influence on personality or intelligence.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have dated several girls. I’m definitely not a nerd. I’m a good student and an athlete.

There is a certain girl in one of my classes that I would like to go

My sister called me a nerd and told me to give up and not to bother this girl anymore. My dad told me to hang in there and to continue my pursuit of a date with this girl. Yesterday, we looked at the Deschapelles Coup. Here is its cousin. South is in three no-trump, and West leads his fourth-highest spade. What happens after that?

North opened with a weak two-bid. South used the artificial two-no-trump inquiry and learned that his partner had a maximum with a feature (usually the ace or king) in hearts.

In no-trump, one typically returns partner’s lead as quickly as possible. Here, though, if East wins with his spade ace and plays a second spade, South takes the trick, drives out the diamond ace, and has nine winners: two spades, one heart, five diamonds and one club.

East must get the heart ace off the board so that declarer cannot establish and run the diamonds.

At trick two, East must shift to the heart king.

South wins with dummy’s ace and plays on diamonds. East just holds up his ace for two rounds.

(West’s two is surely a singleton; with a doubleton, he would play high-low.) Then South has no resource.

This is called a Merrimac Coup, named after the American steamship Merrimac, which was sunk in the entrance to Santiago de Cuba harbor in 1898 during the Spanish-American War in an attempt to bottle up the Spanish fleet.

Finally, note that the coup works even if West had started with king-jack-fifth of spades.
