Visitors bid farewell to Conley Farm

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Kris Conley was vacationing in Washington state in 1997 when her now-late husband, Bruce, told her he bought the farm – and he meant it quite literally.

The nearly 10-acre property at Main Street and Dauberman roads in Kaneville Township was theirs.

Conley said her husband thought it was too beautiful to keep to themselves.

“We have to be able to share it,” she recalled him as saying.

They did. Over time, the farmland would become their home as well as a venue for weddings and Conley Outreach Community Services programs, such as a children’s grief camp.

But now, four years after her husband died, Conley has decided to sell the property. At a Farewell to the Farm event Sunday, she said he would understand, as he knew each of the things he started had a lifespan.

“As much as I would love to keep it going, I can’t,” Conley said. “I think it’s time.”

said it is hard to let go of a place that has such a special feel, but the loss of the farm won’t mean a loss in programming.

“The programs will go on,” she said.

“They will continue because I think people need them,” Conley said.

As the sun shone brightly Sunday afternoon and Alfrey prepared a fire for s’mores, Conley greeted visitors to the farm, thanking them for coming out.

Among them were Tom and Mary Fink of Batavia, whose 12-year-old son died 10 years ago from cancer. Tom Fink said they have attended grief programs at the farm, including a candle lighting event held in December.

“It’s a meaningful ceremony,” he said, noting attendees would then meet inside Conley’s house and talk.

As of Sunday, Conley said no potential buyers have looked at the property, which will host its last wedding next weekend.

While giving a tour of the property, she shared some of her husband’s ideas for it, such as making the house into a retreat for hospice patients.

“He touched so many lives,” she said.

TGI Friday’s restaurant closes down

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Another business has shut its doors on the city’s east side in the same month that a project’s groundbreaking ceremony brought promise of new vitality.

TGI Fridays, 3875 E. Main St., St. Charles, has closed, according to a sign taped to its front doors.

“Thanks for the good times,” the sign states. “This Fridays location has closed.”

The sign – which was up by lunchtime Sunday – does not indicate when the casual dining restaurant closed, but it directs visitors to patronize its other locations. A list can be found at www.fridays.com.

According to St. Charles Township records, the eatery was built in the East Gate Commons subdivision in 2002.

The shuttered restaurant is in the same shopping center as Super Target and Petco and sits across the street from the former Savers store. The thrift

store shut its doors Sept. 16.

Meanwhile, nearby Charlestowne Mall is undergoing a rejuvenation. Early this month, city officials and representatives from The Krausz Companies Inc. celebrated the groundbreaking of The Quad St. Charles, which is expected to hold its grand opening in spring 2016.

Krausz Companies, which bought the mall last year for $9.5 million, plans to turn it into a gathering place of restaurants and new tenants.

Fashion show fundraiser for nonprofit artists’ studio in Batavia

BATAVIA – The multicolored wig Lauren Schmidt wore on Saturday added about three feet to her 5-foot, 6-inch frame, but surprisingly, it did not weigh her down.

“It was more hot than anything,” said Schmidt, a Glen Ellyn resident.

Schmidt walked a runway with Marcy Thomas of DeKalb as they wore designs from Aurora artist Danielle Dobies during the third annual Onsom’ bel fundraiser. The event was held Saturday at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St., in downtown Batavia.

The first On-som’ bel was held in 2012 at the studios, and the event gets bigger every year, said Laura Spicer, event chairwoman and Water Street Studios board member. The event, which raises money for the nonprofit Water Street Studios and its programs, included a gallery show, a silent and live auction, a dance party with DJ and, of course, a fashion show.

The fashion show featured the work of 10 artists worn by 19 models under the theme “Avenue + Passage.” They walked a dramatically lit runway in a loading dock at the studios while the music of groups such as Inner City and the Sex Pistols filled the space.

Chicago resident Lisa Gagne and her husband, Matthew, were two of the show’s roughly 200 attendees. Gagne’s employer, Robis Marketing, is one of the show’s sponsors, but she said she had to pay her own way to get in. The show is so popular that all the company’s passes already were taken, she said.

“It was really unexpected, but very, very entertaining,” said Gagne, who also attended last year’s show. “Some of the things they did were amazing.”

Danielle Dobies, Aurora artist pieces were the two designs from Water Street Studios resident artist Patricia Davoust of Warrenville. The looks were awarded Best of Show by evening’s end.

Davoust’s models were Jared Protz of Aurora and one of her daughters, Celeste Davoust-Jenkins of Warrenville, depicting cave paintings and the influence of human throughout time. Davoust-Jenkins said she had plenty of butterflies leading up to Saturday’s show, her first as a model, but Protz told her to look straight ahead on the catwalk and not break character.

It took four hours to get her runway ready, three of which were spent just on her hair.

Her locks were spraypainted a grayish silver and pipe clearers were placed inside of it so it would stand upright and look like a stalactite, which forms from calcium salts and hangs

like a icicle inside a cave.

Davoust collaborated with Stephen Wake, owner of Focas Hair Salon in St. Charles, to complete the hairdo. She also worked with her two models and another one of her daughters, Madeline Davoust, to complete the choreography for the show.

Dobies told Schmidt and Thomas to act extravagant for their runway choreography.

The black tulle petticoats the two models wore took about a week to make, but the large wigs Dobies created for them took three months to construct.

Dobies had a sculpture in the first on-som’ bel show in 2012 and worked behind the scenes at the 2013 show. She was thrilled to once again be part of the fundraiser.

“To see your work come to fruition and see the models wearing it is so exiciting,” Dobies said.

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys soccer team defeated Glenbard North in convincing fashion to win its home tournament Saturday, scoring five unanswered goals in the second half for the 6-1 victory.

The Saints (11-1-1) got on the board first on a penalty kick by midfielder Jordan Moore. The penalty kick was set up by Saints’ midfield pressure, specifically Taylor Ortiz.

The Saints’ pressure dominated as the match unfolded.

The goals came from sophomore Olaitan Ajayi and senior Juan Flores.

Elgin beat Plainfield Central while Marmion beat Belvidere to play in the third-place match.

The Saints have a grueling week ahead. Tuesday they head to Larkin, Thursday they are home against Wheaton Academy and Saturday they

face St. Charles North at home.

“It’s obviously a big confidence booster winning today the way we did against a quality opponent,” Jennison said, “we know that coming in we got three difficult games this (upcoming) week.”

While East gears up for their conference games, Marmion faces St. Francis on Tuesday.

“We haven’t lost to St. Francis in a while and we’re playing them at home,” Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro said. “We always play well at home.”

The Cadets have not lost a home game in two seasons.

Wheaton Academy coach Brad Thornton didn’t pull any punches when discussing his team’s inability to counter the Bulldogs’ big plays in the game.

“We got our butts kicked today,” Thornton said. “They came out and they punched and at times I thought they were ready to punch back but at the end of the day we just didn’t execute. That’s really what I’ve challenged our guys with.”

Senior receiver Dillon Oleson had one of the lone big plays for the Warriors on the day, hauling in a 54-yard touchdown from Thrasher to cut the lead to 14-7 late in the second quarter.

Oleson said he had worked on the play after practice during the week but said his team needs to work harder to perform better next week against Glenbard South.

“We have to forget about [today] first and foremost,” Oleson said. “When we play Glenbard South next week, when we get hit in the mouth like we’re gonna, like we did this week, we have to come back and punch them back and keep moving forward.”

WEST CHICAGO – With fans on their feet applauding, a new class of former athletic greats went into the Wheaton Academy Hall of Fame in an uplifting halftime ceremony during Saturday’s football game against Riverside-Brookfield.

It was one of a few chances the home fans got to cheer on the afternoon, as the Warriors were routed by Riverside-Brookfield in a 45-21 defeat, Wheaton Academy’s first of the season.

The Warriors (4-1, 0-1 Metro Suburban Conference West) had outscored opponents by a combined total of 164-7

throughout their first four games but had no answers in the contest for senior Bulldogs running back Matt Chapp, who had three touchdowns on the day.

After trailing, 28-14, at the half, the Warriors fumbled the ensuing kickoff at their 10-yard line, leading to a Bulldog field goal.

Junior quarterback David Thrasher lead Wheaton Academy with three touchdowns passes on the day, including one in the final minute of the game, but the offense was one-dimensional from the onset with the rushing game routinely snuffed out.

Dear Abby: My family and I were watching a popular annual awards show recently.

Like most of these, this one included an “In Memoriam” segment in which was featured a slideshow of the photos and names of people from the field who had died during the year.

The segment was well done and very meaningful.

When it was over and the lights went back up, the audience clapped.

My family applauded, too. That made me feel uncomfortable, so I didn’t join in.

Dear Abby: I am a 35-year-old single man.

Three years ago, I took legal custody of my niece (who is now 8) to prevent her from becoming a ward of the state.

Her parents were drug addicts.

Shortly afterward, my mother moved in to help me raise her, which is greatly needed and appreciated.

The problem is, I had to dramatically alter my lifestyle – no more staying out late on weekends or impromptu trips to visit college buddies – and worst of all, an end to dating.

I used to go out with a lot of women, but I haven’t been with anyone in more than two years.

I didn’t like the idea of bringing ladies around my niece whom she might never see again.

It was easier to just give up dating than to deal with her questions and looks of confusion.

She has had enough instability in her young life, and I didn’t want to add to it.

Now I’m starting to get lonely, and I’m not sure how to get back into the dating scene.

How would I explain my living situation to a potential wife: “I have a kid and my mother living with me, and that’s not going to change. Interested?”

This week, let’s continue our look at deals with two suit fits.

When you have two unbalanced fits, say 5-3 and 6-2, which should you choose?

The guideline is: When all or most of the tricks must come from the two long suits, select the less evenly divided. This means that 6-2 will be better than 5-3. (This is also one time when a 5-3 fit will be better than a 4-4.) That rule is doubly true when the breaks are bad or you have relatively weak hands.

In today’s deal, North-South will be contemplating a sacrifice over four hearts, which would make easily, West taking at least three spades, five hearts and two diamonds. Should North-South pick five clubs or five diamonds?

South’s first-round call would cause debate. Many experts would advocate two no-trump, showing at least 5-5 in the unbid suits. But some would prefer two diamonds, bidding the longer suit first and planning to bid clubs next time (at the five-level if necessary) to describe the 6-5.

This second plan works better here, because if South intervenes with two no-trump, North will prefer five clubs to five diamonds. Note, though, that after two rounds of hearts, declarer is in big trouble. The defenders will keep playing on hearts, and five clubs doubled will go down four.

In five diamonds doubled, though, West must lead an unlikely club at trick one to get the contract down three.
