The cedar waxwing, a bubbly bug-catcher GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Whether we realize it or not, we all have hidden talents – a special skill or talent we trot out from time to time to amaze and amuse ourselves and others.

My college roommate Alisan, an engineer by trade, can juggle just about anything you put in front of her. My friend Lisa can read – and comprehend – really, really fast. And I can make a weird popping noise with my ears.

Our wildlife neighbors have hidden talents, too.

Did you know, for instance, certain species of caterpillars are adept at flinging frass – science-speak for insect poop

– more than three feet from where they’re perched? (It’s a great way to throw potential predators off track.) Or that beavers are just as good at digging burrows as they are at building lodges and dams?

I was reminded of animals with surprising skills again the other day as I walked toward the entrance of the Pottawatomie Community Center. I heard a faint, highpitched whistle overhead and looked up just in time to catch a glimpse of a medium-sized, yellow-toned bird darting back and forth, catching insects on the fly.

The bubbly bug-catcher was a cedar waxwing, a local resident known more for its ability to eat prodigious quantities of stationary foods, namely berries, than for its aerial acrobatics. Nonethe-

less, there it was, feasting on the insect bounty we’ve been blessed with these past several months.

I remember the first time I saw cedar waxwings eating bugs, along the Menominee River in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. New to birding, I was standing outside our family’s cabin trying out a new pair of binoculars, when I noticed a group of birds

flying maybe 20 feet above the water.

As I focused in, I expected to see some familiar insectivores – like maybe swallows.

Or phoebes. There was an eastern phoebe nest on the cabin that summer. But, darn it, the birds I was watching bore no resemblance to any bird I knew of that ate insects.

Bench dedication set at Japanese Garden

WHAT: A stone bench has been installed at the Japanese Garden in the Fabyan Forest Preserve in memory of Susan Odt Leung, and there will be a dedication ceremony.

Leung was a student of Asian culture and was raised in Geneva. The memorial funds were donated by her family, including her mother, Genevieve Odt, along with her brother-in-law and sister, Dr. Stephen and Barbara Lewis. The public is invited and welcome to attend.

Geneva economic development director leaving for job in DeKalb

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Geneva’s economic development director Ellen Divita is making the jump to DeKalb, where she’ll lead efforts to attract businesses and foster development.

Divita will start her new role as community development director in DeKalb on Nov. 20, DeKalb officials announced Friday.

In her new role, Divita will oversee a rebuilt community development department with four full-time and four parttime staff members, including two part-time property maintenance inspectors she will hire.

Divita also will be part of developing and implementing the city’s new commercial building inspection ordinance.

Divita has been the economic development director for Geneva since 2008. She previously worked as the deputy director of community development for the village of Mount Prospect and as director of economic development for St. Charles and Woodstock. Divita has a master’s degree in urban planning and a bachelor’s degree in Ellen Devita communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said he is sorry to see Divita leave.

“Ellen’s professionalism and critical thinking skills

are just two of the characteristics that will serve DeKalb well,” Burns said in a texted comment. “Geneva owes her a debt of gratitude and I, for one, will miss her counsel and commitment to advancing our economic success.”

DeKalb City Manager Anne Marie Gaura said 43 people applied for the position, which was created as part of the budget year that started July 1.

City staff interviewed six candidates.

The community development director position replaces the city’s current economic development consultant, Roger Hopkins, whose contract with the city likely will end by November, Gaura said.

On top of economic development, the new community development department is

charged with code enforcement and planning and zoning duties. In turn, city staff looked for community development director candidates with experience in economic development, planning and building inspection.

Mayor John Rey said he hopes Divita will familiarize herself with the strengths of the community and put those forward to attract businesses.

Divita, who will earn about $122,000, said she’s followed the recent changes to DeKalb’s inspection process, including the

city signing separation agreements with its three building inspectors. She expects her first days on the job will be about examining local strengths, such as the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, Interstate 88 and Northern Illinois University, as well as DeKalb’s challenges.

“I’ve got a lot of learning to do,” Divita said. “I can’t come in with any presets. I have to come in and see what the community wants.”

“If you like the outdoors, this job’s for you,” Splittgerber said.

The job is that of a Kane County Forest Preserve District police officer. Splittgerber is one of four full-time officers in the Kane County Forest Preserve’s Public Safety Department, which includes a sergeant, a chief and about 20 part-time officers. Splittgerber also is one of the department’s two field training officers.

The department’s mission is to preserve and protect nature in Kane County, as well as ensure a safe, family environment. To do this, the department’s police officers patrol the 20,000-plus acres of preserve property in eighthour shifts.

There usually are two patrol officers a shift, and they will divide up their patrol, with one officer taking the northern half of the county and the other officer in the southern half, Splittgerber said.

Like any other police department, the Forest Preserve officers are fully uniformed and armed. But they also utilize various modes of transportation depending on the preserve. In addition to the ATV, Splittgerber could be found in a sport utility vehicle or simply on foot navigating the county’s vast trail system.

“We deal with conservation issues throughout our properties,” Splittgerber said.

Officers are on the lookout for hunters in the fall, then in the winter, they hit the trails on snowmobiles.

No matter the season, Splittgerber is at home out in the elements.

He grew up traveling to different lakes in Wisconsin, where he would hunt and fish. Splittgerber also was a plant and soil science major at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and received his master’s degree in criminal justice at Boston University.

“I get paid for something that I love to do,” Splittgerber said.

On slower days, Splittgerber checks to make sure buildings are secured on preserve property and also

builds connections and contacts with preserve patrons.

Visitors who frequent the preserve can provide invaluable information on what’s going on in the area, he said.

The public safety department has investigated various crimes in the past, such

as domestic battery and drug issues. If there is a case of a suspected marijuana-growing operation, Splittgerber said the department can call upon other agencies, such as the Civil Air Division, to do a flyover to spot any illegal activity.

The department in the past few years also has employed mobile cameras that help the officers watch preserve property when they are not there. The cameras are moved to preserve locations the department is concerned about, or where any suspicious activity might have been reported, Splittgerber said.

Forest preserve police officers bring a variety of expertise from their previous and current work with other police departments.

Splittgerber, for example, is a member of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, as well as a part-time officer and 22-year veteran of the Sugar Grove Police Department.

“We’re like an encyclopedia of knowledge,” Splittgerber said.

Also in a 5-2 vote, the board approved a contract with a roofing consultant, Mac Brady Associates Inc., of LaGrange, for construction administration and quality

assurance observation.

The total cost of the project – $277,500 – will include $37,000 for Mac Brady’s fees, records show.

Board members Travis Ketterman and Susan Shivers cast the “no” votes both times.

Library Director Christine Lazaris said the roofing consultant will have a pre-construction meeting with Pine next week to try to get a firm date for construction to start.

Lazaris said the goal is to start the roof repair and replacement in early October.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Schmidt’s Towne Tap, 107 N. Main St., Elburn, was cited in a liquor violation for serving alcohol after closing hours, records show.

According to a police report, Officer Jeff Herra noticed several people inside Schmidt’s at 3:06 a.m. Aug. 16, more than an hour past the 2 a.m. closing time designated in village’s liquor code. The incident occurred during the weekend of Elburn Days. Kevin J. Schmidt, the tavern owner and liquor license holder, came outside to talk to Herra, according to the report. Schmidt told the officer everyone inside were his employees “cleaning up, eating pizzas and drinking a few beers before they went home.”

Herra told Schmidt, “there could be no alcohol consumption at all after closing time, and [Schmidt] said he was not aware of it and that it had never been a problem in the past,” according to the report.

“Schmidt said he would go back inside and ‘take care of it,’ ” Herra’s report states.

Trustee Bill Grabarek served as deputy liquor commissioner, finding that a violation occurred.

“Based on the narrative of Officer Herra’s report and your admission to Officer Herra that your staff, in fact, was being served beer after the hours permitted under your license, I find that a violation has occurred and hereby impose a $250 penalty,” a Sept. 3 citation letter signed by both Grabarek and Schmidt stated.

Grabarek acknowledged the seriousness of the violation, but offered to hold the penalty in abeyance for a period of 12 months, “provided no further violations occur,” according to the citation. The letter also shows where a $500 fine was to be imposed, but it was crossed out and reduced by half and initialed “KJS.” The citation letter also stated Schmidt can contest the violation and demand a formal hearing within 10 days.

“The vitality of Elburn and its businesses is critically important to us,” Grabarek’s letter states.

“Your establishment, in the few short years since opening, has become one of the cornerstone destinations that make Elburn a special place to visit,” according to the letter. “For

your commitment of capital, time and faith in our village, we are grateful and trust this present incident can be resolved as proposed.”

Elburn Village President David Anderson said he recused himself as liquor commissioner because he owns the building and is selling it on contract to Schmidt. “That started prior to my being elected village president,” Anderson said of the contract sale agreement with Schmidt.

Grabarek said he took the

citation letter to the tavern to talk to Schmidt about the liquor violation.

“He said, ‘Can’t I get a warning?’ And I said, ‘Kevin, you admitted it. You want a hearing, you can have a hearing, but I will withdraw any offer of abeyance. It’s as simple as that,’ ” Grabarek said.

“It was an incident. Being deputy liquor commissioner, that is how I handled it. There are reasons for liquor laws.

Like driving, it’s a privilege.

It’s not a right,” Grabarek said.

Geneva man pleads guilty to sexual assault

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWN SHIP – A Geneva man pleaded guilty in court Friday to videotaping sexual acts between himself and a minor he knew who was younger than 18.

Robert R. Schamne, 23, of the 1000 block of Manchester Course, Geneva, pleaded guilty to child pornography, a Class X felony, and criminal sexual assault, Robert R. a Class 1 fel- Schamne ony, punishable by a sentence of 10 years to 45 years in prison.

Kane County Circuit Court Judge John Barsanti accepted the plea and set Schamne’s next court appearance for Nov. 14.

In addition, once he is released from prison, Schamne must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act. According to evidence presented in court, between Nov. 18, 2012, and April 3, 2013, Schamne videotaped an act of sexual penetration between himself and the vic-

tim, who was younger than 18 years old.

Schamne remains in the Kane County Jail, where he has been held since his arrest April 5, 2013, on $300,000 bond.

The case was prosecuted

by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Whitfield, who is assigned to the Kane County Child Advocacy Center, and investigated by the advocacy center.

Police arrived at the Wasco Community Center, 5N082 Old LaFox Road, Campton Hills, about 8:35 p.m. and were told by witnesses that Prairie Lakes Homeowner Association board m e m b e r Jim Gaffney “charged” audience mem- Jim Gaffney ber Michael Milanovich, police reported.

Gaffney, 67, also serves on the St. Charles School District 303 Board and is the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District board president.

In a written statement, Milanovich, 59, said Gaffney used profane language, got out of his seat and charged the back of the room, where he was seated.

“My wife, Keri Milanovich, got up in between us, and Mr. Gaffney put his hands on my wife,” Milanovich wrote. “…

Unacceptable behavior in a threatening matter.”

Keri Milanovich, 45, also provided a written statement, in which she said others also got up to stop Gaffney.

“He appeared to have rage in his eyes, and I felt he would have pushed me aside to get to my husband who he doesn’t even know,” she wrote.

Reached by phone Friday, Gaffney denied touching anyone. He said tempers were flaring by the time he arrived – he was late because of a school board meeting – and people in the crowd were hollering at board members. He told them to calm down and to run for the board if they didn’t like what was going on, he said.

His efforts to calm the group led to the situation worsening, Gaffney said, noting “it got out of hand.”

Young people complain, too I’m responding to “Stop Being Miserable,” about the senior citizens that [are] unhappy, and they should move. Yes, we are senior citizens, but we should move? We’ve been here 12 years. What we paid for our property, we would not get at this time. We put in a lot of money, and we would have to take a loss. And people telling us to go find another town – where? Where is that? I’m not going to start all over again with another home and start putting air conditioning in and all new appliances and everything else. And a new roof?

You’re not going to be doing that as a senior. Yes, seniors are unhappy here. Yes, it costs a lot to live. But don’t they know a lot of seniors took early retirement because they lost

After several minutes of intense peering through the binocs, coupled with occasional bare-eyed squints, I was ready to admit defeat. But then, wonder of wonders, one of the birds came over and landed in a nearby poplar. With its rounded crest, black mask and distinctive red marks on the wings, even I could recognize that the mystery “flycatchers” were, in fact, cedar waxwings.

I’ve since learned insects make up less than a third of the cedar waxwing’s diet, but they’re added in right when the birds need them most – in summer, when nutritional demands are high.

A teen’s salute to World War II vets The more Ellie Rutan learns about World War II veterans, the more she wants to discover.

The 14-year-old Elburn girl’s quest for knowledge about veterans began to grow after she contacted a veteran and author, Edgar Harrell, after reading his book, “Out of the Depths,” which recaps his experience aboard the USS Indianapolis. The ship was torpedoed during World War II. Since then, Rutan has launched a project, “Legacy of our Fathers,” in which she speaks with veterans of World War II and videotapes their meetings.

It’s an effort that has impressed local veterans organizations, as well as her father, Bob. We also believe it is worthy of praise. It’s common to hear complaints that many young people do not show appreciation toward veterans and do not recognize the sacrifices that were made for their freedom. Rutan gets it. She said she appreciates what people have done for her.

The gold socks worn by St. Charles North’s girls volleyball team at a recent match represented more than a fashion statement.

The gesture was part of recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which has significant meaning in the community. Carter Stibgen, a junior at the school, runs on the cross country team. His sister, Paige, died in 2007 at age 11 from acute myeloid leukemia. She would have attended North.

The Stibgens’ mother, Joanna Meyers, has become an advocate for pediatric cancer research. She participated in the 20-mile run that was part of the recent Fox Valley Marathon event to support a charity, Cal’s Angels.

The volleyball team’s decision to wear the special socks showed that there are others willing to join Meyers in raising awareness. The school’s cross country, football and cheerleading teams also have expressed interest in joining the cause.

Any such move should be encouraged. It’s a simple, yet wonderful, way to remember Paige Stibgen and to let others who might be fighting the disease know that they are not alone.

Spanking a child doesn’t make you a monster

Bloomberg News When Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was indicted for injuring a child earlier this month, a lot of journalists explained that the lesson we should take away was not that it’s wrong to leave welts and bruises or use a switch on a child. It’s that the physical punishment of children is always wrong – and should perhaps be outlawed.

Joseph Stromberg said in Vox that “it’s never OK to hit a child” and argued that spanking children doesn’t discipline them effectively – he claimed that research has “consistently” reached this conclusion and can cause them long-term mental problems.

But spanking isn’t going to be banned anytime soon, because a large majority of Americans believe it’s sometimes appropriate. They’re right.

Robert Larzelere, a professor at Oklahoma State University who researches human development and family science, tells me that the studies on which the anti-spanking journalists rely have two great flaws.

The first is that many of them don’t account for the possibility that it’s the kids who act out the most who draw the most frequent punishments.

They observe that kids who receive corporal punishment have more behavioral problems than kids who don’t and conclude that the punishment caused the difference.

The second is that they lump together very different kinds of parental behavior.

Some parents spank their kids rarely and as a “back-up” if other forms of discipline aren’t working. Other parents rely on it as the default punishment, or even – as in Peterson’s case – use more extreme physical tactics. Just as you’d expect,

these practices have different effects.

Reviewing the literature and correcting for the two flaws he describes, Larzelere finds that “back-up” spanking doesn’t have adverse effects on children and is a more effective disciplinary tool than most alternatives. Isolating a child in a room seems to be as effective on average – but it won’t work as well for all children.

We shouldn’t ban spanking because it would criminalize many parents who are: A. trying to advance their children’s interests and B. doing so reasonably. Most people can distinguish between reasonable discipline and abuse, even if not all journalists can.

Bulldogs power past North Stars

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia football players and coaches pride themselves on the diversity of their offensive and defensive playbooks.

Formulas for victory seemingly are endless when things are going right.

On Friday, when that wasn’t always the case against stingy St. Charles North, the Bulldogs relied on one of the most time-honored strategies in existence.

No question: Power football propelled Batavia to a 21-7 win in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

“They’re a good team on the offensive line, and I’m sure the defensive line gave our offensive guys a run for their money,” North Stars senior defensive end Jordan Bergren said.

“That’s where the game’s decided. So we need to get better, and our offensive line needs to get better.”

With its passing game struggling, Batavia (4-1, 3-0 UEC River) carried 32 times for 198 yards behind a veteran offensive front.

Jake Hlava, a linebacker seeing increased time as a fullback, uncorked the biggest run of the night. With his team leading, 14-7, as it had since halftime, Hlava visited the end zone on 46-yard burst with 2:11 to play.

“We had two tackles pulling, and it parted like the Red Sea,” Hlava said. “I just followed my blockers, and then I just took it home. We wanted it more than them, I think.”

North (3-2, 1-2) would debate that point, naturally, as it showed marked improvement from last week’s 31-13 home loss to Geneva.

Still, the Bulldogs’ familiarity with North’s schemes paid big dividends. Junior defensive back Brett Bowman snagged three interceptions, including two in the fourth quarter. His second pick came with Batavia ahead by just seven points and 5:29 remaining in the game.

“Our defensive coaches have prepared us really well every week, and this week, those were a lot of the routes we worked on,” Bowman said. “So as soon

as I was able to read it, I knew I could step in front with the pressure we were bringing and have an opportunity to get an interception.”

North limited Batavia to 17 yards of offense on three first-quarter possessions, maintaining a season-long reputation for smothering foes up front while hanging tough in the secondary.

That momentum followed the North Stars on their last possession of the opening quarter, with Didier – replacing early-season starter Kyle Novotney, who shifted to slot receiver – capitalizing on ample time to maneuver around the pocket.

The drive ended with a 16-yard scoring pass from Didier to Novotney as time expired.

“Having those two athletes

on the football field in what I feel (are) their strongest positions made us a better football team,” North Stars coach Rob Pomazak said. “That was a fast offense that we had out there, and I thought they showed pretty well. We’d like more points on the board, of course.”

The early deficit neither sat well with the Bulldogs nor lasted long. Batavia awoke its attack behind junior Zach Garrett (103 yards), who pierced through North’s ‘D’ for a 35yard gain early in a drive that eventually produced a pair of fourth-down conversions, the last a 2-yard TD pass from Kyle Niemiec to senior tight end Glenn Albanese.

On a night that uncharacteristically featured more Coffey punts (six) than receptions (four), the Bulldogs nonetheless held on. In the fourth quarter alone, the teams combined for four punts, an interception and a turnover on downs before Hlava’s TD. “The whole game, it was just back and forth with them.

We knew that they had a really good front seven, and we were just trying to attack it,” Hlava said. “At the end of the game, it opened up real well.”

The Vikings (5-0, 3-0 UEC River) zipped to a 35-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, capitalizing on ideal field position at every turn and a pronounced edge at the line of scrimmage.

“Our left guard is 5-10, 170 pounds and their left tackle on defense is like 6-3, 300 pounds,” Elgin coach Kyle Rohde said. “You don’t have to be a physics teacher to do that.”

Vikings senior receiver Pace Temple nabbed three touchdown passes from fellow senior Daniel Santacaterina in the half, while junior running back Justin Taormina added rushing TDs of 30, 18 and 5 yards. Senior running back Justin Nebel added a final first half rushing TD as the lead swelled to 49-0 by halftime.

Burns, who projected to be one of Geneva’s go-to options in the ground game this season, saw his first action since the Vikings’ season-opening

win at West Aurora. A nagging hamstring strain sidelined Burns during the past month, but he began chipping away at the rust Friday, rushing seven time for 62 yards.

His 27-yard, would-be TD run was negated by Kourtchinsky’s penalty.

“It’s been hard because you have to be kind of patient with it, but at the same time, you really want to play with your team out there and kind of fight with your guys,” Burns said. “It’s just a matter of patience.”

While sitting out, Burns s a i d i t ’ s b e e n e n c o u r a ging to watch players such as Taormina (10 carries, 96 yards) emerge to keep Geneva’s rushing attack formidable.

“It’s been awesome,” Burns said. “Seeing like JT, and seeing [David Burchard] this game come out and score for one and put up some big yardage is just awesome.”

Elgin (0-5, 0-3 UEC River) produced only one first down in the first half. The Maroons opened the game attempting

an onside kick, but it only served to supply the Vikings a short field, which became the norm until a running clock and extensive Geneva substitutions created a more competitive second half.

Sean Chambers and Matt Rinne each had turns relieving Santacaterina at quarterback as the game unfolded.

“We’ve got a JV game tomorrow so they’re going to be all footballed out, all those [substitutes],” Wicinski said.

“Hopefully we get something out of them in practice [next week]. They’re not used to [playing so much]. … But it goes fast when that clock gets running.”

GENEVA – Geneva football coach Rob Wicinski suspects Alexis Kourtchinsky could be a star for the Vikings this fall – but probably not on the football field.

Kourtchinsky, a French exchange student, decided he wanted to play the American version of football rather than the kind that’s popular back home.

“He goes ‘No, I want to play football,’ ” Wicinski said. “So I said ‘OK, do what you want to do.’ He would tear it up, he would be a star, on the soccer field.”

Collectively, the Vikings tore it up Friday against overwhelmed Elgin as Geneva remained unbeaten with a 56-6 pummeling of the Maroons at Burgess Field.

The game plunged out of control early, allowing the Vikings to tap deep into their depth chart. Kourtchinsky, a receiver, found his way onto the field in the second half, and was whistled for a holding call that negated a Liam Burns touchdown run.

With a smile, Kourtchinsky acknowledged he’s still figuring out the rules.

“We know the sport [in France] but we don’t practice, we don’t play the sport,” Kourtchinsky said. “It’s too bad because it’s a good sport.”

“Our first-team defense did a real nice job tonight,” East coach Bryce Farquhar said. “We forced some turnovers and just did a really nice job containing.”

Neither team did much offensively in the first half until East got a 42-yard Nick Candre field goal midway through the second quarter.

After forcing a quick threeand-out, East (2-3, 2-1 Upstate Eight Conference River) got the ball back at its own 43 and needed only four plays to find paydirt as Aiden Wright found Candre for a 26-yard score that made it 10-0.

After that, East relied on the legs of Ramon Lopez. The

With the score still at 10-0 to start the fourth quarter, East’s Nick Lombardo sacked Draper on fourth down at the Streamwood 36. On the ensuing Saints drive, Lopez carried the ball six times, including a 1-yard touchdown run that gave East some breathing room at 17-0 with 9:23 left in the game.

“Ramon is a great running back and he came out tonight and proved that,” Farquhar said. “The past few weeks

he’s been held down a little bit and tonight he had an opportunity to go and really he just put us on his back.”

Lopez put the game away with 6:26 to go, scoring on a 19-yard touchdown on his 46th carry of the game. Lopez helped wear down the Streamwood defense in the second half, carrying the ball 26 times for 158 yards.

Meanwhile, the East defense was in Draper’s face all night, hurrying many of the quarterback’s 57 pass attempts.

It wasn’t until the final drive of the game – against East’s second-team defensive

unit – that Streamwood (14, 1-2) was able to move the ball.

“We haven’t been making big plays and that’s hurt us,” Farquhar said. “Tonight we really did a nice job of shutting down those big plays and coming up big. I give Streamwood a lot of credit, they did some nice things but our kids played real well.”

Wright played a steady game under center for East, completing 13 of 22 passes for 125 yards without an interception.

East will need his steady play going forward with four tough games remaining.

The DeKalb junior picked off Kaneland quarterback Jake Marczuk in the closing seconds, sealing the Barbs’ 37-34 win and ending a frantic comeback by the Knights.

“It was a thrill, man, everything was going so fast,” Lowie said. “I bobbled it a little, but everything is great. It turned out the way it did.”

Dre Brown – who finished with 22 carries and 149 yards – opened the fourth quarter with his first touchdown of the night, putting the Barbs (5-0 overall, 2-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) up, 37-20. The Knights (2-3, 0-2) answered on the next drive on a 19yard run by Marczuk, who finished the game with 356 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and three interceptions.

fense on the next three drives until Kaneland broke through again, this time on a 61-yard pass to Connor Fedderly, who finished with 215 receiving yards and two scores. That cut the score to 37-34 with 4 minutes left.

DeKalb got the ball back and had a strange drive that included four straight penalties, setting up a second-and-47 at one point.

And although it didn’t gain yards, it did eat time. Kaneland got the ball back with 41.1 seconds left, and on the second play of the drive, Lowie got his interception – joining teammates Brown and Rudy Lopez, who had first-half picks of Marczuk.

It was the third straight three-interception game for the Kaneland junior QB.

“For [Lowie], I’m happy he could make that last play for us,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “And for our team, it was big because we couldn’t stop them.”

For the Knights, it was the second straight conference loss.

“We had a shot and it just didn’t bounce our way,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said.

For the Barbs, it was their first time in eight tries beating the Knights. The win came one week after beating rival Sycamore, which had beaten them seven straight. It also puts the Barbs in prime playoff position.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it to get there,” Weckler said.

Five different players scored a touchdown for the Barbs, including Eriq Torrey, who took their first play from scrimmage 63 yards on a sweep for a touchdown. Quarterback Derek Kyler completed 11 of his 13 passes for 128 yards. No one had more than 20 yards rushing for the Knights – all four DeKalb ball carries had at least 26.

BURLINGTON – The Genoa-Kingston football team wanted to spoil homecoming for the Burlington Central Rockets.

That plan failed.

The Rockets ran all over the Cogs en route to a 3312 win Friday to keep them undefeated in Big Northern Conference East Division play. The Cogs are now 2-1 in the conference.

Junior running back Jason Berango had a stunning night for the Rockets (3-2, 3-0 BNC East). Berango finished with 27 carries and 208 yards rushing including a touchdown run of 77 yards on the first drive of the game.

It was a tough night for ACC (4-1, 0-1 Metro Sububan West) all around with the offense out of sync all night. The Chargers failed to convert on a couple of key drives but remained in the game thanks largely to Babler’s efforts.

With Central trailing 23-15 with just over two minutes left in the game after an ICCP score, Babler returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a

touchdown.

Then he took a shuttle pass from Rahn in for the two point conversion.

The inability to hold IC’s offense at the end was a reality check for his team, Babler said.

“It really snaps us back into reality before one of the biggest games of our season coming up,” Babler said. “It really opened up our eyes and showed us we need to get back to work, working hard in practice next week.”

ACC coach Brian Casey said his team didn’t execute enough to win.

“We had some chances that we have to take advantage of,” Casey said. “Credit them because they made some plays.

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Aurora Christian football team allowed 28 unanswered points to Bishop McNamara, and the Eagles couldn’t recover Friday night in a 34-28 home loss.

Fighting Irish junior running back Jonathan Ward had 33 carries for 128 yards with a touchdown in the game and was the catalyst for the Irish offense. Ward was able to soften up the Eagles defense and allow his quarterback Kobe Shutter to throw for 187 yards with a touchdown.

“It would not shock me if we see these guys again,” Aurora Christian coach Dave Beebe said of Bishop McNamara, a Chicago Catholic White Division rival. “I think we have started a great rivalry here and I would expect a lot of tight games with these guys.”

Shutter was 6 of 11 on the night with an interception. In addition to Ward rushing for a score, he also threw a 33-yard touchdown at the start of the second half to push the Irish’s lead to eight.

In the second quarter Shutter connected on a 32-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver Chris Bell to give Bishop McNamara a 7-6 lead that it never relinquished. The Ea-

gles trailed by 22 points late in the third quarter before tightening the game late.

“I am so proud of this team,” Beebe said. “They’re not used to losing … and there is a lot of fight in this team.”

Despite the loss, Jacolby Maxwell had a huge game for Aurora Christian. He hauled in 12 catches for 174 yards with one of those being a 52 yard touchdown catch. Senior quarterback Austin Bray looked for Maxwell in nearly every situation.

Bray threw for 256 yard with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Irish cornerback Ariez Andrews was responsible for one of the interceptions and was charged with defending Maxwell.

Bishop McNamara (4-1, 3-0 Chicago Catholic League White) was able to seal the game with Ward’s 2-yard touchdown run with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter.

“I took those kids aside in practice and said, this one’s going to be on your shoulders,” Krefft said. “It’s a tribute to them, it’s a credit to them and how resilient they are to pick it up and perform like they did.”

Both quarterbacks were picked off three times each over the game.

AURORA – Despite plenty of heroics from Brandon Babler, the Aurora Central Catholic football team dropped its first game of the year in heartbreaking fashion Friday to IC Catholic Prep.

With the score tied and the ball on the ACC 42-yard line, the Chargers were praying for a late stop on the third-and-10 snap.

Instead, with under a minute remaining in the game IC sophomore running back Jordan Rowell rushed into the end zone on his 4th touchdown run of the night.

Rowell credited his offensive line with giving him running room all night and said that the team was hungry after trailing 7-2 at the half.

“The line starting blocking better and we all got the adrenaline flowing. I think we were so excited to get back in the game,” Rowell said. “With the intensity and the hype of it being a Friday night game under the lights we didn’t want to back down.”

The ensuing extra point put the visitors up 30-23 with just 39 seconds remaining on the clock.

After ACC quarterback Matt Rahn was sacked on second down and forced to spike the ball to preserve the clock on 3rd down, the Chargers faced a fourth-and-long with 10 seconds to go.

The Chargers ran a wild trick play that eventually ended with Rahn completing a pass to Babler who found some room on the outside and looked like he could get free

Dinner is an art form. I’m not talking about the food. Nope, I’m talking merely about the getting people to the table – and keeping them there – part.

I haven’t mastered how.

Generally, I prefer for my family to sit together at dinner time. You know, so we can catch up and chat.

The idea is that for a few fleeting moments we’ll actually connect.

(Forget about bringing cellphones to the table.) I’m always grateful when talk turns to something funny, as that seems to keep people in their seats a few minutes longer. If I don’t time things just right, before I’ve even finished puttering around the kitchen the kids have inhaled their meals and pushed back their chairs.

Their appetites for conversation have dwindled, and the window of opportunity has closed. Yeah, I know it’s partly my job to teach them gracious manners, and that they should wait to pick up their forks until their hostess is seated.

Hmmm, must do that. Because sometimes, dinner-time is the only time we’re all together in the same

But schedules often interfere.

It’s not always practical to have a set time for dinner, or to even insist that everyone sits down at the same time, since work, soccer practice and other fun stuff sometimes take precedence.

In fact, last week, even the setting sun had an impact on dinner time! Holly’s soccer coach called for practice to begin 30 minutes earlier so they wouldn’t run out of daylight.

Dinner, the ultimate “moveable feast.” No kidding. Some days, the best I can do is hope that the kids catch and consume whatever snacks I toss their way as they jog out the back door.

Monday night we did manage to sit down at the same time – at 7:28 p.m., when Holly walked in the back

Autumn a time to think of spring Fall, my favorite season of the year; my dog loves it too!

We all have a bit of spring in our step with the cooler weather. It is time to begin the task of harvesting the fall crops and soon putting the vegetable garden to bed.

The kale, Swiss chard, beets, broccoli and carrots are still plugging away in the garden and with any luck, we will be able to harvest for another few weeks.

The median date for the first frost in our area is Oct. 10 – meaning 50 percent of the time frost comes before that date and 50 percent of the time, we have frost after that date.

MaryAnn and I have already done quite a bit of fall preparation at our community garden plot. We have pulled all of our Roma tomato plants. We removed all of the plants, fruit, and straw that we used as mulch to the trash – not the compost bin.

This year, we had anthracnose,

Their dad, after a few tense moments during which he apparently missed the Bears’ first big play, finally picked up his plate, mumbled his apologies and hustled after Noah to the other room (I had to stifle a giggle – he stayed as long as he could). The big red dog stayed put by my side, though. (Never mind that he was waiting for crumbs to fall.)

Serves me right for serving dinner at kickoff time.

Now that I think about it, aside from the germ-fest that is the mighty high chair, I admit I was sad to see it go all of those years ago. At least people hung out and pretended to dine with me while they were buckled in, but I digress.

Savvy moms lure their loved ones to the table – and keep them there – with delicious food. (I am not a savvy mom. I’m a savvy mom wannabe.)

That’s not so easy peasy for me (and not just because I tend to wing-it

in the kitchen, marveling at my last-minute efforts to making do with whatever’s in the fridge), since everyone in my family defines “delicious” quite differently. Which is fine, but it has its challenges. Holly craves carbs, and Noah wants his protein – and tons of it – dressed down, while Todd wants his dressed up.

You know, the more stuff on it, the better. I prefer lighter, greener fare, which appeals to nobody but me. And the dog. But he’s not terribly discriminating. Whatever.

Ah, well, such is life. Dinner together is my ideal, the ghost of which lingers like an invisible net.

The loops may be stretching now – and whole days may fall through – but still, the net remains.

They’ll come back to the table.

Maybe not often, maybe not every day – and maybe not for my cooking – but they’ll be back.

St. Charles library to host book sale in October

LEARNING TO GROW Vicki Hagstotz a common fungal disease, on our tomatoes. Since this fungus can overwinter in the soil, we removed all of the debris and next year we will rotate the crops and grow a vegetable outside of the Solanaceae family (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and eggplant) to prevent the same fungus on plants next year.

As with many gardens in the area, we have lots of clay – lots and lots of clay. In early August, when we harvested the potatoes, in their place we planted a soil builder cover crop of oats and peas. Pea plants fix nitrogen and condition the topsoil while the pea flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects.

On the other half of the harvest area, we have been doing a bit of field composting. We all have those summer squash that get away from us and become the size of small planets. We have been breaking those down with a shovel and turning them into the soil. We have also pulled and chopped our

green bean and pepper plants and turned them into the soil too.

Fall is a good time for amending soil by adding organic matter, such as compost, dried leaves, or straw. You can even bury non-glossy newspapers or computer paper. Keep in mind that shredding helps it to break down faster.

While it is always a bit sad when the growing season comes to an end, we do get a bit of satisfaction knowing that a bit more of that clay will be broken down next spring.

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and you think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.”

It kind of sneaks up on you and before you know it you start considering what the options might be as you face those big Charlotte Berg retirement decisions. My children live out of state and I knew that I wanted to stay near my friends, church and my community activities so my search began. I already had some dear friends living at Oak Crest and after visiting decided that the on-site availability of health care, location and surroundings were the perfect fit for me. Now, I was faced with the dilemma of making the decision to actually move.

By ALYSSA ROSENBERG The Washington Post “There’s been the diffusion of black culture to everyone else,” said Kenya Barris, the creator of the family sitcom “Black-ish,” which premiered Wednesday night on ABC, “and there’s been a diffusion of black culture from black culture.” His collaborator, writer Larry Wilmore, took the idea further when the three of us spoke about the show in Los Angeles in July.

“One of my favorite lines that Kenya wrote in the pilot, is the white kid is at (the black family’s house), and he’s looking for grape soda, and it’s like ‘Why would you assume _’ and he’s like ‘Found it!’” Wilmore explained.

“That’s kind of our relationship with appropriation. ‘How come white people can’t appreciate our thing?’ ‘Oh, they’re appreciating our thing. How dare they take it away?’”

The tensions the two men are describing are what made “Black-ish” the best new comedy pilot of the fall television season, and what have the potential to make it a show with an importance beyond pure entertainment value.

The series focuses on an upwardly mobile black Los Angeles family, headed

by Andre (Anthony Anderson), an advertising executive, his doctor wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), Andre’s father (Laurence Fishburne) and their four children. Andre appreciates the opportunities that are open to him, including a nice home and a possible promotion at his firm, but when “Blackish” begins, he is also gravely concerned that his kids are drifting from his own sense of what it means to be black, in part because they have grown up in such relative comfort.

“Early America was your immigrants assimilating into what was thought of as American, but really was Anglo-American. They didn’t want anything to do with Eastern Europeans, so you had to be Anglo-American to be considered a real American,” said Wilmore, who is working on the first 12 episodes of “Black-ish” before turning his attention to his upcoming Comedy Central show, “The Minority Report,” which will fill the slot vacated by Stephen Colbert. “So it’s funny how every group, everybody’s had that type of thing where there’s something gained, something lost.”

But the tension Andre is feeling does not simply play out in his own family, where he and Rainbow — who is mixed-race — have radically different perspectives on everything from their own children’s choice of sports and

Simpson is actually guilty. Instead, the great insight of “Black-ish” is that everyone has a relationship to black culture now, as well as to issues of class and gender, and that there is great comedy and great insight to be mined in looking at the fine-grained differences in the perspectives everyone brings to blackness (and whiteness), family life and money.

Or, as Barris put it: “Culture and class are our themes, but it’s really about having a family show that’s talking about something ... So much of that has been lost to zaniness. But true comedy does come from having a point of view and a perspective.”

For Andre, class may prove to be as significant as race. In a bitingly funny scene in the pilot, a Hollywood tour guide conducts a group past Andre’s house, telling her customers “if you look to your left, you’ll see the mythical and majestic black family, out of their natural habitat, and yet still thriving!”

Having money “makes him feel conspicuous,” explained Wilmore, offering up his own experience as an example.

“During the (1992) riots, I happened to be moving from Brentwood to Hancock

Park. I was just starting in television. I had my old Celica, this like, 1979 Celica, and I had boxes of my stuff, camcorder, stuff like that, as if I had been looting ... This is my stuff, and I started feeling guilty ... I thought, what if somebody stops me! It’s this weird feeling, it was very bizarre.”

“You look around right now, and it’s us, it’s me and Larry,” Barris agreed, pointing out the whiteness of the hotel bar where we were talking. “I got a head nod from the brother working here,” Wilmore joked.

Not all kids your age have parents who can afford them, and that might be the reason. Show them you are mature by keeping your room clean and doing whatever other chores are assigned to you.

If you get an allowance, start saving up and ask them if they would “partner” with you in getting an iPod Touch in the future, after you have saved a certain amount.

It was one of the explanations he gave for his depression and substance abuse.

I have wanted to talk to his counselor about the situation so that as a family we can talk to his sisters. We could perhaps find out whether what he’s referring to is normal experimentation or something more. We would also be able to ask his sisters if they were abused and acting out as a result of it.

Now our son does not want to discuss this and refuses to see his counselor. We’re afraid pushing him will trigger a relapse on his part, but we are also concerned about whether there might be an

issue with his sisters that should be addressed. Should we tell him we’re going to raise it with his sisters? Or should we wait until he’s ready? – Wants To Do What’s Best Dear Wants: This news has to have been shocking to you and your husband as parents, but it isn’t time yet for a family discussion because your son may be too fragile. Also, I think professional ethics prevent your son’s therapist from discussing this with you.

Issues like this can be complicated, and the facts may never be known.

What is most important now is for you to show your son that you love him and care about his emotional health, and while you respect his privacy, it is vital that he help himself move forward.

The past cannot be changed, but it is important for his future that he find a professional with whom he CAN talk. Table any family discussion until your son is stronger.

Fresh or frozen, produce offers nutritional benefits Dear Doctor K: I’m trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, but I don’t have time to go to the grocery store every week. So, I stock up on frozen produce. Am I missing out on any nutritional benefits by eating frozen instead of fresh?

Dear Reader: For taste, variety and quality of nutrients, recently picked local produce is the way to go. But if fresh produce is inconvenient or beyond your budget, frozen fruits and vegetables provide plenty of nutrition.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are indeed more nutritious, but the difference between fresh and frozen produce may not be as stark as you think. Researchers at the University of California-Davis found that: • Fresh and frozen produce are similar in terms of carbohydrate, protein, fiber and mineral content.

• Fresh produce can lose half of its vitamins and beneficial plant-derived chemicals during storage or cooking.

• More water-soluble vitamins such as C are lost during the frozen packaging process than

If you’re looking for truly fresh produce, your best bet is to go to a farm stand or local farmers market. True, some farm stands sell fruit that is not picked-thismorning fresh. But if the produce is labeled as locally grown, it probably is fresh. If you ask a farm stand clerk if the produce was picked today, you will usually get an honest answer.

As my wife would be the first to tell you, I’m not a “foodie.”

I’m more of a gourmand than a gourmet. So I asked a colleague for some advice.

Dr. Michelle Hauser is a certified chef, nutrition educator

and a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School. She explains that grocery store produce may be picked unripe so it can be stored for months. Then it may be artificially speed-ripened on its way to the grocery shelf. As a result, it may be less nutritious than naturally matured fruits and vegetables.

Produce destined for the freezer aisle is picked when ripe.

It may be briefly cooked in hot water and then frozen in or near the fields. This helps to preserve its nutritional value.

So, the bottom line for me is: Don’t worry too much about whether your produce is fresh or frozen. If stocking up on frozen fruits and vegetables helps you get your five-to-nine daily servings, stick with it.

But if you pass a farmers market, make a quick stop for some fresh peaches or apples. Your taste buds will thank you.

Boys are pressured to succeed Dr. Wallace: Our health and safety teacher said that almost all of those who suffer from the eating disorder anorexia nervosa (self-starvation) are girls because girls don’t want to be overweight.

These young victims suffer from anorexia nervosa.

Boys who become anorexic are not trying to be slim. They are generally pressured by their families to succeed.

Guys want to gain muscle and strength, not lose weight.

I had the good fortune to be able to work with teens at a psychiatric hospital in Santa Ana, California, a while back and counseled a number of young adults who suffered from anorexia nervosa.

In the four years I counseled anorexic teens, only one was a young man. It took several years for him to eat a normal meal.

Dr. Wallace: I am 19, have a full-time job and live at home with my parents and two younger sisters. My dad is a great dad and is a good provider for his family.

I love my parents very much, but sometimes my mom makes this a very difficult chore. She is a very poor household manager. She rarely drives, so she depends on me to take her to the doctor, to the cleaners, to the grocery store and everywhere else she wants to go. She constantly reminds me that she “couldn’t function”

Double fits give more winners

To end this week’s look at various suit fits, a wild deal in which each side has a double fit.

A double fit (almost always) produces more tricks than the point-count would suggest. And if one side has a double fit, so does the other. The usual guideline in these deals is to declare.

First, though, look only at the West hand. What would you lead against six hearts doubled after that exciting sequence?

Once you have decided, study the full layout. What do you think of the auction? What is par – the result when both sides do as well as possible?

If this deal were played at 10 tables, you would surely have 10 different auctions. First, East might jump straight to four spades. Although this risks missing a slam, it does make South’s life much harder. Here, if East did bid four spades, I guess South would compete with five diamonds. That would go back to East, who might suddenly be inconsistent, bidding six clubs. One minute, he is happy with game; the next, he is forcing to slam.

In the given sequence, it is vital for South to bid five diamonds. When you know of a double fit, tell partner. North’s six-heart bid might turn a plus into a minus, but it avoids the risk of a big minus.

Six hearts doubled is defeated by three tricks if East receives a diamond ruff and the defenders correctly cash their three black-suit tricks.

Six spades will make if East guesses clubs correctly.

The par result is seven diamonds doubled down three.
