Time capsule found in former Sixth Street School’s cornerstone in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A time capsule in the cornerstone of the former Sixth Street School in Geneva was recovered during the building’s demolition this week, officials said. Geneva History Museum Director Terry Emma said the cornerstone weighs about 400 pounds and will be delivered to the museum on Monday.

“It’s in the shape of a ‘V’ – the actual corner of the building,” Emma said. “We are so excited. We are going to do a big to-do about it and invite the public to the opening and celebrate the Sixth Street School history.”

Two of my favorite words: Enormous spider “Let me show you something hideous!”

My friend Mrs. Janet was pretty emphatic as she pulled her phone from her purse. While under different circumstances I might have been intimidated by her phrasing, in this case I was anything but. Because, as she scrolled through her photos, she muttered two of my very favorite words of the season: “Enormous,” and “Spider!”

It seems that Mrs. Janet’s husband, George, had come upon a web and spider, the likes of which he had never seen before. He was struck by its bold colors – deep black and bright yellow – as much as its size, which consisted of a 1-inch body surrounded by legs that were half again as long. Yep, nearly 3 inches of spider, suspended on a proportionately large web that was strung between two plants.

Impressed on a number of levels, George texted a photo of the spider to Janet. And she, good friend that she is, then shared it with me.

What George found was a female Argiope aurantia, the black and yellow garden spider. I’ve heard kids also call these banana spiders, no doubt due to the bright yellow markings splashed

GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto across the critter’s dark, bulbous abdomen. This area stands in stark contrast to the front part of the spider’s body, the cephalothorax or prosoma, which typically is a silvery white.

The spider’s scientific name alludes to both of these striking features. The genus name Argiope was taken from Greek mythology and means “of the silver face,” while the species name aurantia basically means “overlaid with gold.”

Even though these references relate to colors, rather than precious metals, in my book Argiopes really are as good as gold. A native predator, the garden spider spins it web in sunny areas of tall vegetation. The stunning orb web, characterized by a distinctive “zipper,” or zig-zag pattern down the middle, catches all manner of flying and hopping insects including, in our area, a large number of nonnative, leaf-gobbling grasshoppers.

(True story: The other day we watched as a large grasshopper devoured a leaf of milkweed. That’s right –

The “zipper” structure of her web extends down and to her left. milkweed. The plant that’s supposed to be rife with toxins and fed upon only by specialized consumers, like monarch butterflies. Clearly, those levels must drop as the plant ages. Either that, or there’s a new race of super-tough orthopterans out there.)

Scientists are divided in their opinions of just what

function the Argiope web’s “zipper” performs. Also called the stabilimentum, the structure is thought by some to prevent birds from crashing into the web and wrecking it. Another theory states the zig-zag pattern has an ultraviolet quality that is attractive to insects; this theory seems to make sense when you consider young Argiopes spin larger, more circular stabilimenta.

(However, it’s been shown experimentally that hungry spiders sometimes forego spinning any “zipper” at all and yet their webs still catch prey). Still other arachnologists believe the structure provides camouflage for the spider, or that it simply is there to add heft and support to the web.

Regardless of its true purpose, the stabilimentum is definitely responsible for two other common names for Argiopes: the “writing spider,” for the way the zig zags resemble scrawled handwriting, and the “zipper spider” for the structure itself.

Every year at this time, I head out in search of Argiopes. Some years, I’m lucky; some years not. This year, at least so far, my results have been mixed.

I’ve found three webs, each adorned with a stabilimen-

tum down the middle, but zero spiders. I’ve looked carefully along the stems of the grasses where the web is spun, as well as in the grass below, but, bupkis. Zero.

Zilch. Zip. Just the zipper, in an orb web.

I don’t know if the spiders all heard me tromping closer, and ducked out of sight, or whether they had been predated by something that found them just before I did. In all three cases, the webs were in good shape, indicating that they had been recently maintained.

And so my search continues. If you happen upon an Argiope, I’d love to hear about it. Drop me an email, or give a call. And if you can send a photo, even better. I love looking at these spiders’ graceful lines, the exquisite features of their markings, the intricate detail in their webs.

Batavia police: Two accused in soliciting scam

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Two Minnesota residents were cited for soliciting without a permit for a business that does not appear to be legitimate, Batavia police announced Friday in a news release.

Ryan P. Choinski, 22, of the 112000 block of Hidden Creek Place, Chaska, Minnesota, and Clara C. Rothstein, 20, of the 26700 block of Noble Road, Shorewood, Minnesota, were cited in Batavia for soliciting

without a permit, the release stated.

Choinski was cited after police were called at 6:04 p.m. Sunday to the 700 block of Mandrake Drive in Batavia, and Rothstein was cited after 4:42 p.m. Thursday during a response to the Clara C. 1100 block of Rothstein Wind Energy Pass, according to the release.

In each incident, Batavia

police were responding to a complaint of a person soliciting money for military care packages from an organization called Vision Packaging LLC, the release stated.

Choinski and Rothstein each admitted to soliciting money from residents in Batavia neighborhoods, according to the release. A further investigation revealed that Vision Packaging LLC does not appear to be a legitimate business associated with any charitable organizations, the release stated.

Batavia police had been notified from other Chicago-area police departments that the group has been the subject of solicitation complaints throughout the area for the past couple of months.

Batavia police do not anticipate additional charges for Choinski and Rothstein in connection to Sunday’s and Thursday’s incidents, Batavia Detective Kevin Bretz said Friday.

The Municipal Code in Batavia requires all solicitors to register and complete a background check with the city

before being granted a permit to conduct door-to-door sales.

Solicitors who are granted a permit are required to wear a badge affixed to the front of their shirt that contains the permit information, according to the release.

Batavia police reminded residents to be mindful of doorto-door solicitor scams where criminals are taking advantage of generous citizens. Residents are encouraged to call 911 to report people soliciting without permits and any other suspicious activity.

ST. CHARLES – The 30th annual Scarecrow Fest is set for Oct. 9 to 11 in downtown St. Charles.

Admission and parking are free. Visitors are encouraged to park in two remote lots – one at Charlestowne Mall and one at Illinois and Seventh streets – and take the free shuttles to the festivities, according to a news release from the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The festival’s signature events – including the scarecrow contest – will be joined by such new activities as the Soda Pop Tour and Coca-Cola Museum, a photo op booth and a new carnival ride attraction, the release stated.

The soda tour will feature 80 craft sodas for sampling.

VIP Super Soda Taster tickets are available for $20 and include a commemorative glass and unlimited tastings, according to the release.

Visitors may make their own scarecrow in an area that will include a photo area complete with photo cutouts and a vintage tractor for posing, the release stated.

Carnival rides include a Ferris wheel and the new double decker wacky shack fun house, according to the release.

Children’s activities include sidewalk chalk, a coloring tent and headband making, according to the release, which noted that other daily activities include a balloon artist, stilt walker, magician and a petting zoo.

Live music and the Autumn on the Fox Arts and Crafts show in Pottawatomie Park also are planned.

MICHAEL E. KRISTON Michael E. Kriston, 75, of North Aurora, IL, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, IL. He was born in Finleyville, PA, the son of Michael and Rose (Radakovics) Kriston. Mike married Phyllis M. McIver on November 18, 1972, in Boston, MA. Mike served his Country in The United States Air Force.

Born: Nov. 29, 1925 Died: Sept. 23, 2015 Dr. Richard M. Thornton, age 89, of St. Charles, passed away at Delnor Hospital, Geneva on Wednesday, September 23, 2015, surrounded by family.

He was born November 29, 1925, in Elgin, IL, son of James & Lillian (Schmitz) Thornton.

Richard graduated from Elgin High School in 1943 and went to work for Howard Aircraft in St. Charles, IL producing PT19 and PT23 army training planes and DGA navy ambulance aircraft. Drafted at 18, he served

in World War II as an anti tank sergeant with the 65th infantry division of General George Patton’s 3rd army. He was awarded a Bronze Star for action in breaching the Sigfried line and his platoon participated in the surrender ceremony for the city of Regensburg, one of Germany’s largest cities. Richard also took part in the liberation of Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria.

Post war, Richard earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University and joined Continental Can Co. in Chicago as a project engineer. He directed pioneering work in the food and beverage industry and developed many new can making technologies. In 1957, Richard joined Litho-Strip Corporation and participated in developing new metal coating technologies for the building and appliance industries. He went on to become President of Litho-Strip eventually retiring in 1969.

He then attended Northern Illinois University, earning a PhD in International Economics in 1974 and joining the faculty of DePaul University, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Economics and Money and Banking. As Director of the DePaul Center for Economic Education, Dr. Thornton developed “The Stock Market Experiment”, a simulation stock trading program for Illinois elementary and high school students which ran from 1980 to 1990 giving thousands of students their first experience in stock trading. He retired from active teaching in 1995.

Dr. Thornton is survived by his loving wife, Joyce (Burkart); children, Richard (Cindy) Thornton of Strongsville, OH, Thomas (Marie) Thornton of Grafton, WI, Lance (Missy) Thornton of Geneva, Kevin (Carol) Thornton of Chicago, Shawn (Diane) Thornton of St. Charles and Anne Gosz of St. Charles.

Hydrant flushing set in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles performs regular hydrant flushing to improve water quality and minimize mineral buildup in the water mains.

Flushing also ensures that hydrants are ready for emergency use.

From Monday to Friday, hydrant flushing will begin on the west side of the Fox River south of the Timbers subdivision, continuing south to Gray Street and west to 16th Street.

From Oct. 5 to 9, hydrant flushing will begin on the east side of the river south of Iroquois Avenue, continuing south to Division Street and east to 14th Avenue.

Tri-Cities housing market shows mixed growth KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Home sales were up in Batavia and St. Charles in August, while sales were down slightly in Geneva, according to the latest data released by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

There were 430 homes sold in August in Batavia, a 17.8 percent increase compared to August 2014. St. Charles posted a 6.4 percent increase and Geneva posted an 0.8 percent decrease during the same period.

Geneva had the largest percentage decline of short sales in August with nine homes sold, down 70 percent from the 30 homes sold during the same month last year.

Batavia had a 65.4 percent decrease in short sales and St. Charles had a 30.6 percent decrease compared to August 2014.

Median sale prices went up in Batavia and Geneva in August compared to one year ago. Batavia’s median sale price went up to $255,000, a 4.1 percent increase from last year, and Geneva’s reached

GENEVA – The city of Geneva will be flushing fire hydrants throughout the community for a four-week period starting Monday, as part of an ongoing maintenance program.

Hydrants will be flushed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The water is safe to drink, but residents are encouraged to let their faucets run for a few minutes if they notice any discoloration.

People are urged to limit water use if possible and refrain from laundering their clothes

during this time period to avoid staining from rusty water.

Signs will be placed in neighborhoods to remind residents the program is underway in their area.

Residents also can view the hydrant flushing progress on the city’s website at www.geneva.il.us. Work is expected to be completed in late October, weather permitting.

It takes months for the combination of the donor’s cartilage and the patient to produce enough cartilage to fill in all the holes, Mehta said.

Carissa Beauchane, 35, now of Carpentersville, formerly of St. Charles, was Mehta’s fifth patient to receive ProChondrix Augmentation.

Beauchane said her knee was injured 20 years ago when she worked as a certified nursing assistant and a 220-pound patient sat on her right knee for 90 minutes.

The knee got progressively worse, resulting in pain and limping, she said.

“I work at the front desk [at Fox Valley Orthopedics], and I knew Dr. Mehta did cartilage transplants,” Beauchane said.

GENEVA – For the past 20 to 30 years, when a young person experienced a knee injury, the treatment was to drill little holes in the knee to stimulate the body to produce fibrous tissue, a local orthopedic surgeon said.

“It was not cartilage, but a layer of tissue. That does OK in the short term, but over the long term, doesn’t do well,” said Dr. Vishal Mehta, an orthopedic surgeon at Fox Valley Orthopedics in Geneva. Mehta specializes in sports medicine.

Since December, Mehta has used ProChondrix Augmentation, a new way to treat knee injuries that stimulates the body to produce its own cartilage. The surgery is for those in their teens up to early 40s involving injuries in which the bone has no defect, but the cartilage is wiped away, he said. These patients are too young for knee replacements, he said.

The procedure involves sealing a small sheet of cadaver cartilage atop the knee with the holes drilled into it, Mehta said.

Mehta said he has done 10 surgeries with good results, and now the work is headed for clinical trials.

My kids get the affection I used to show my husband

By GAIL CORNWALL Special To The Washington Post I would have been able to respond intelligently, possibly even cleverly, to my mentor’s remarks, if it hadn’t been for a hand – first lightly touching my lower back and then slowly creeping up my spine to rest, warm and firm, at the base of my neck. Darn it. I knew I shouldn’t have brought a date.

When we first got together, my husband and I found professional events challenging. Being in the same room without touching felt almost painful, barely possible.

As newlyweds, we judged couples with king-sized beds: If you don’t want to come into contact, what’s the point of sleeping together? And throughout my first pregnancy we spent hours every day curled up together – reading while snuggling, working while cuddling, even eating with our bodies intertwined in some way or another.

Our desire for physical affection seemed as endless as our brunch mimosas.

That was then. Now, six years and three kids after we first caved on the mattress issue, we’re lucky to sneak in a quick peck when he departs for work in the morning or a hug upon his return late each night. We still make each other giggle every day, and we squeeze moments of marital bliss in with enough frequency to leave us both satisfied, but there has been a precipitous decline in physical contact.

Some of it is logistics. With my husband minding the small humans from 6 to 8 each morning while I go back to sleep (as recompense for handling all the infant wake-ups, wet beds and nightmares) and then working until 9 or 10 each night, we don’t spend much time in the same room.

But there’s more to it than that.

Fatigue is definitely at play. As a stay-at-home mom, I spend all

day in close proximity to people who know the concept of physical space the way I know quantum mechanics, which is to say they have not the slightest clue what it is. Even without the contact, the constant verbal and emotional interaction means I’m left needing head space in the evening, and somehow physical space is a prerequisite for that.

My fear is that there’s also a satiation issue. Each day I receive uncomplicated, totally adoring physical affection from three people. Perhaps the pit I once believed was bottomless is filled up with love from my kids, leaving less need or desire for my husband’s touch.

As awful as that sounds, the adaptation makes sense; it’s even optimal. Lord knows, the new independent and low-maintenance me suits my exhausted husband just fine.

But it scares me. When our kids flee the nest, will our relationship have enough elasticity to bring us back together physically? Or will we be so used to the necessity of our separateness that we never reconnect in incidental, nonessential ways?

I can’t say for sure. But the trepidation lessens when his hand randomly lifts and clasps mine across the dining room table. The worry subsides when he awakes on my side of the bed, having subconsciously gravitated toward me after a rough day at work.

These little physical gestures give me confidence. They give me faith that soon enough it will once more be his arms into which I retreat for my eye-closing, deep-breathing, soul-unfurling embrace.

Best Under 40 – and beyond The “Over the Hill Gang” this isn’t.

Recognized in a ceremony Tuesday at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles, the Kane County Chronicle’s inaugural class of Best Under 40 honorees beamed about their accomplishments and community standing. As well they should.

Members of the group, all younger than 40, also were profiled in recent editions of the Chronicle, sharing their stories and emphasizing the importance of hard work and diligence in their respective fields.

Attendees described a unique, vibrant atmosphere at the gathering, one the Chronicle is excited to continue for years to come. Loveland, nodding

to her niece during her acceptance address, brought her own spin to the award by saying: “It’s not about being the best. It’s about doing your best.”

Although the Best Under 40 program came accompanied with an age parameter, Loveland’s words certainly do not. Nor does the message of another recipient, who continued a popular trend by crediting the importance of parenting and mentioning the ecstasy of having “won the parent lottery.”

Of course, you didn’t have to rear an award recipient to find Best Under 40 comforting. Assembling future leaders in any setting always accentuates the importance of stepping up and getting involved.

Did we mention the refreshing energy at Tuesday’s ceremony?

F. Scott Fitzgerald, an American author who lived only to age 44, once wrote that, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” The season change need not be the only reminder that our existence is a constant renewal.

Best Under 40 proved immeasurably rewarding, but – like age itself – it’s only a number. Being the best under 20, 30, 64 or 92 counts equally as much. Just remember what Loveland said, because it really is evergreen: “It’s not about being the best. It’s about doing your best.”

According to the City Council, there is a meeting Nov. 3 at 7:30 to discuss, before the taxpayers, the purpose of the TIF. The City Council approved the change to the city’s comprehensive plan [prompted by its consideration of] ... this TIF district. Why even have this meeting on the third, when the City Council has already decided on the TIF? It is a foregone conclusion that the industrial TIF district will become active … without any meaningful discussion from the residents. The Nov. 3 meeting is useless.

Bulldogs’ gutsy call pays off

Batavia scored three touchdowns in a span of 2:20 seconds to break a tie and cruise to a 4828 win over the North Stars in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

In the middle of that touchdown barrage, Batavia (5-0, 3-0 UEC River) coach Dennis Piron made a bold choice that more than paid off. After taking a 28-14 lead, Piron decided to call an onside kick from freshman kicker Jack Carlson, which the Bulldogs recovered.

A few plays later, quarterback Kyle Niemiec ran in a score from five yards out for a three-score lead.

“It’s not the first time we’ve tried that,” Piron said, referring to the onside kick recovery in Week 1 at Oswego. “[Carlson] is really, really good at them. He’s a freshman and has no fear. So when he’s that good at them, it’s really not a hard decision to make that call. The defense felt confident if we didn’t get it and we had the momentum… you could feel it, so I said, ‘Why not?’ “ Niemiec’s run was one of four total touchdowns the senior signal-caller contributed to Friday night. He threw for two, one each to Nick Stuttle and John Fitch, as well as running in two himself.

Knights struggle down stretch

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In his first full game of the season, Tony Tate had the impact DeKalb football coach Matt Weckler assumed his senior would have from the start.

Although he left the field with an injury – Weckler said it was just a cramp and nothing serious – he still scored twice, including the score near the end of the first half that gave the Barbs the lead for good in a 45-28 win Friday.

The win put the Barbs (4-1 overall, 2-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) in good position in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East race as the only undefeated team in the division.

The Knights (3-2, 1-1) beat Yorkville last week, and the Barbs beat Sycamore.

Tate ran four times for 44 yards, including a 26-yard zigzag touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the Barbs up 4221. David Long – who ran for 211 yards and two touchdowns – had a block on the sweep, springing Tate for the final 15 yards. Tate also had a teamhigh five catches for 86 yards and a receiving touchdown.

“I’ve been anticipating this and anxious to get back on the field since I’ve been out,” Tate said. “It was definitely a heart warming experience and something I really did enjoy.”

The Knights did a good job of limiting Cole Tucker – who was the Barbs’ top receiver coming into the game – to three catches for 28 yards.

But in addition to Tate, Luke Davis had four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.

“When you play a well-balanced team and a well coached team, anybody can have a good night,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “They have so many weapons you can’t just take away one guy.”

Weckler said he’s not surprised it was the Knights who were the first team to figure out how to slow down Tucker.

“We knew eventually teams would start taking Cole away,” Weckler said.

After stopping Kaneland on fourth down, the Barbs went 63 yards, capped by a third-down run by Kyler for 27 yards. They converted a fourth down on the drive, also a sneak by Kyler.

Kaneland responded with a scoring drive of its own, capped by Marczuk’s 3-yard keeper on third and goal.

Each team had two scoreless drives until DeKalb, with 1:30 left on the clock, rattled off a 74-play scoring drive, capped on Tate’s big reception – he was well past both defenders in the Knights’ secondary.

Saints coach Bryce Farquhar said the extent of Mitchell’s knee injury was unknown Friday night. He said Wright will be evaluated today. Although he never re-entered Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division game, Wright did stand on the sidelines throughout the contest.

Farquhar said Wright has filled in admirably for Mitchell when the junior QB has gotten injured this year.

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENOA – The Genoa-Kingston football team celebrated homecoming with a 42-14 win over Burlington Central on Friday night.

The Cogs took advantage of big plays in the first half, scoring on touchdown passes of 49, 42, and 39 yards.

Senior wide receiver Ian Fell was the recipient on all three touchdown passes. Two of those touchdown throws came from running back Zach Miller, who finished the night two of two throwing the ball, with two touchdowns and 88 passing yards.

Allowing five scoring plays of more than 39 yards left Burlington Central head coach Jason Newburger with a sense of déjà vu.

“Big plays have killed us a couple times this year,” said the Rockets first-year head coach, whose team fell to 0-5.

“It killed us against Dixon and definitely came back to bite us again tonight,” Newburger said.

ELGIN – Unlike last Saturday afternoon, Geneva’s football team did not need any fourth quarter heroics Friday in its Upstate Eight Conference River Division game against Elgin.

The Vikings had the game well in hand at halftime, scoring all their points in the first 24 minutes of play on the way to a 45-10 rout at Memorial Field.

“I was really proud of the way they came in and handled their business. They came in and did what they were supposed to do,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “We were trying to look for the little things – get better at our steps, our positioning and those kind of things. Things that broke down against [St. Charles] North last week.”

Geneva (5-0, 3-0 UEC River) wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring 50 seconds into the game on a 17-yard run by running back Justin Taormina. It was the first of his four first half touchdowns. The Vikings scored on five of their six first-half possessions.

“He’s a weapon, He really doing a nice job putting a foot on the ground and going up field,” Wicinski said of Taormina.

Taormina scored the second touchdown at the 4:45 mark of the first quarter. A 38-yard pass from Sean Chambers to Ryan Skibinski for their third score put the Vikings ahead 21-0 with

Elgin (0-5, 0-2) got on the board after the third Vikings TD. Shareick Morris returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to Geneva’s 8 yard line. The Maroons could not get any closer to the goal line and settled for a 25-yard Miguel Delgado field goal, making the score 21-3.

Not to be outdone, the Vikings scored on the kick return after the Maroon score. Alex Keating caught the ball near Geneva’s 20-yard line and returned it 80 yard for the TD, giving the Vikings a 28-3 lead after the first half.

“He’s a track kid, so when gets vertical he can really move,” said Wicinski.

Taormina did all the offensive scoring in the second half.

The first on a 9-yard run and the second on a 15-yard pass from Chambers. Sandwiched in between was a safety when the Vikings defensive line downed Elgin quarterback Terrance Miller Allen in his own end zone. After Taomrina’s last score, Geneva made a 2-point conversion to build a 45-3 at halftime and ensured a running clock for the second half.

The team lined up for a kick attempt. Skibinski took the snap and instead threw to Collin Lee in the end zone.

ST. CHARLES – A stingy defense and the legs of backup senior quarterback Aiden Wright led the St. Charles East football team to a 44-12 victory over Streamwood on Friday night.

Entering the game at the 5:04 mark of the second quarter for injured starter Zach Mitchell, Wright guided the Saints, running the option to perfection for 104 yards on 12 carries, including a 24-yard touchdown run with 3:17 to play in the first half.

“We split reps during the week so I get ready,” Wright said of his weekly preparations. “I started on defense tonight so I didn’t get a chance to watch a lot of what Zach

If Steel coach Dan Muse’s glowing reflections on the United States Hockey League were to fit on the garb, the tag would require multiple XLs. “Well, this is the best junior league in North America,” Muse said. “These guys are going to be future stars in this game. They’re extremely hard-working, extremely driven players. It’s an unbelievable level of hockey, and I think in terms of people out there that just love this game, this might be one of its purest forms.

The United States’ lone Tier 1 junior hockey league, the USHL grooms potential future professional prospects.

The Steel, who relocated from Bensenville before the season, features 15 college recruits.

Czech goaltender Daniel Vladar, 18, was a third-round pick

of the Boston Bruins in June’s NHL Draft.

Vladar, also the tallest Steel player at 6-foot-6, worked in a group alongside Bruins starting goalie Tuuka Rask during a recent stint in Boston’s training camp.

“It was so good,” Vladar said. “All of the older guys are so humble, and I learned a lot from them.”

The Steel’s elder statesmen equate to a trio of 20-yearolds: Finnish players Niklas Lehtimaki (forward) and Jere Astren (defenseman) and defenseman Ruslan Rakhmatov, a native Russian from New Jersey.

Five Illinoisans also highlight the roster. Defenseman Shane Kuzmeski of Grayslake did not play for the Steel last season, but defensemen Michael Joyaux (Bloomingdale) and Charlie Raith (Winnetka), and forwards Ryan Blanke-

meier (Oak Park) and Tanner Laczynski (Shorewood) did.

“This setup, it’s really nice here so far,” Raith said. “The area, everything. I think it was good to get a change. A fresh start for the organization. I’m excited to play in a new arena.”

Today’s 7 p.m. faceoff against the Team USA U-17 program is the first of 30 scheduled home games this season. Only two of those games are not slated for weekends.

“I think these guys are all ready to play a real game,” said Muse, who spent six seasons on the Yale coaching staff before joining the Steel in the offseason. “I think we’ve been able to cover a lot

of stuff in just this past week. … I’m very excited to see us put everything that we’ve been working on here over the last number of weeks into action here on Saturday night.”

Laczysnki thinks the Steel “should be one of the top teams this year, if not the top team,” and traces that optimism to late August.

Representing the league and USA Hockey at the Junior Club World Cup in Yekaterinburg, Russia, the Steel earned a bronze medal. The U.S. is the only nation to win four medals in the tournament’s first five years.

“You make that bond with the team while you’re over there because it’s basically like a camp when you’re there,” Laczynski said.

“You’re only with the boys for four weeks. That’s prime time to get to know your teammates and get closer to them.”

I know you’re a young man.

Have you finished high school, or what’s the story?

I’m a senior at Wheaton North this year. … It all depends on where your billet family is, and so mine’s right in Wheaton, and so the school’s only five minutes away from our house. … I kind of lucked out. I only

had to take four classes, so I get out at 10:45 [a.m.]. I took a few summer classes this summer, so it worked out nice that I’ve got an easy schedule.

You played high school hockey last season and spent a few weekends in the USHL. Could you compare and contrast that?

Are billet families random assignment?

It depends. … In my case, whenever I came here for the weekend last year, I stayed at the billet family I’m at this year, so they requested to have me. So I already knew them from last year a little bit. So it worked out nice for me.

“The Mighty Ducks” movies were released before you were born, but they’re set in Minneapols-St. Paul. What do you think of the trilogy?

I’ve watched all of them. … Everyone around, all my friends and all my fellow hockey buddies, they’ve all watched the movies more than once. I think it’s pretty neat that they filmed in a few rinks around the area.

There’s probably a few things that stand out to me.

It’s just how the community rallies around their team. I mean, at Wayzata we would get packed houses. Like, up to 2,000 people, 2,500 people at every game, and then obviously the state tournament’s a big deal. You get 19,000, up to 20,000 people per game. It’s just the culture.

Part of the culture. Even if you don’t play on an organized team, you’re always out there playing shinny or out on the frozen rinks in the winter.

SPORTS BRIEFS North girls v’ball falls in 3

LISLE – The St. Charles North girls volleyball team was unable to sustain early momentum in Friday’s match at defending IHSA Class 4A state champion Benet.

The Redwings won, 22-25, 25-22, 25-14 as the North Stars fell to 17-3.

North rallied from several first-set deficits, including an early, 5-0 hole. A Jaclyn Taylor ace pulled North to within 22-18 of the Redwings. Moments later, Taylor served another ace to provide a 23-22 lead for North.

Claire Anderson closed the set with a kill.

Benet showed resiliency of its own to win the second set, then seized control for good midway through the third set.

St. Francis football rolls

WHEATON – Host St. Francis football thumped Chicago Catalyst/Maria, 58-8, on Friday to improve to 4-1.

MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland cross country program will host its second annual Knight of the Zombies Pre-Halloween Run for Your Life on Oct. 9.

I’ve had a few friends that have played in the league, and they’ve said … the biggest difference is the speed and tempo of the game, and that’s the one thing that tends to be a problem for people right at the beginning.

But hopefully, you can make the transition as soon as possible. But that’s the one thing that everyone says is different. It’s the speed.

You’ve traveled around; what’s unique about Minnesotans’ passion for the sport?

Max Zimmer of Medina, Minnesota played full-time for his high school hockey team last season while spending a few weekends on the roster of the Chicago Steel, a United States Hockey League franchise that relocated from Bensenville to Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena this fall.

The USHL, the United States’ lone Tier I junior hockey league, will feature 24 NHL draft picks in the 2015-16 season as well as scores of collegiate hockey recruits.

The 17-year-old Zimmer, a forward committed to Wisconsin, belongs to the latter category. In the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, he discussed his hockey background and outlook with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley.

Darker themes share insight into human experience

Gotta love a girl who’s on top of things.

Sure. In fact, when I broached the subject with Holly in the car, about how surprised I was that such dark matters were part of this story – and about how the language around marriage, and the giving and receiving of women, as property, really, (women relinquished ownership of property, if they had any to begin with, to their husbands) was commonplace as recently as 1906 (when this story was set), Holly spun the radio’s volume dial upward.

“Mom!” she yelled, “I know. You tell me every day.”

I do?

“I just wanna listen to Bruno Mars,” she added, as his, “I think I wanna marry you,” echoed through our car.

Hilarious. And maybe a little bit terrifying, for a mom. Isn’t human nature fascinating?

Planting for fall color in the garden If you’ve been around the block – er, garden – a time or two, chances are you’re well acquainted with the mainstays of the autumn landscape: asters, mums, ornamental kale. But there are a number of plants that put on a brilliant show when the temperature starts to dip, and the rest of your beds have seen better days.

• Sedum ‘Autumn Joy.’ There are many varieties of Sedum, including the popular Sedum Autumn Joy, a reliable and adaptable plant that requires little attention and blooms a deep, rosy pink from August to November, as its name would suggest.

Reaching a height of two feet tall, Autumn Joy looks right at home against a backdrop of taller ornamental grasses, and its sturdy succulent leaves are interesting on their own, or contrasted with airier plants

Drought-tolerant Sedum should be planted in a spot with full sun and well-drained soil for best results. When flowers fade, seed heads can be left on the plant to add some winter interest to the garden and provide food for birds.

• Sweet Autumn Clematis. Of all the myriad types of clematis that climb up trellises, amble along fences and clamber over arches, Sweet Autumn is my favorite. Blooming in August and September, a time when most perennials are winding down for their long winter’s nap, Sweet Autumn Clematis comes to life with a profusion of tiny,

creamy white flowers, and an intoxicating fragrance that will stop you in your tracks. Twining its way around whatever support you can provide, from a backyard shed to a chain link fence, the plant blooms on new wood, growing up to 30 feet in a season. Sweet Autumn Clematis is hardy to zone 4, and can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Once it’s finished flowering for the season, the plant can be pruned hard to 12 inches above the ground.

• Fragrant Sumac. Unlike the other two selections featured here, Fragrant Sumac is noteworthy in the fall for its foliage. A shrub that can be grown successfully in full sun or partial shade, Fragrant Sumac lights up the landscape in autumn when leaves turn from their usual glossy, dark green to a fiery reddish orange.

I have applied for more than 10 jobs and haven’t heard back. I was thinking of doing online classes in a year, but I have no clue what I want to study. Develop good exercise habits to avoid recurring back pain Dear Doctor K: I hurt my back a few weeks ago. I’m feeling better now, but not 100 percent. How quickly should I return to normal activities? I don’t want to reinjure my back.

Dear Reader: You’re wise to be cautious. After an episode of back pain, it’s essential to properly time your return to normal activities. Too rapid a return could lead to a relapse.

But – and this is an important “but” – too timid a return can delay, or even prevent, recovery.

It used to be that doctors recommended immobility and bed rest for people with a sudden back injury that was causing a lot of pain.

But studies in recent years have shown that getting mobilized actually leads to better outcomes.

The trick is how to get mobilized, and at what pace.

If you are recovering from back pain, it’s best to ask your doctor detailed questions about what you can do and when. In the meantime, here are a few general principles for a safe and effective recovery: • Symptoms should be your guide. As a general rule, avoid doing anything that hurts. If you feel pain, stop the activity.

• Increase activities gradually, based on what you can tolerate.

For example, you might start

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff by doing four or five repetitions of an abdominal exercise, three times a day. If this doesn’t worsen your pain, you can increase the number of repetitions every few days – and add new exercises – as tolerated. If the exercises increase your discomfort, cut back for a while. When you’re feeling a bit better, resume the exercises and gradually increase repetitions as you can.

• Avoid twisting your trunk or making sudden off-balance movements. Try to rid your house of clutter that can trip you up.

Slippery surfaces and throw rugs are notorious for causing falls.

Lifting objects while your body is in an awkward position can also cause problems. When lifting heavy objects, remember to bend at the knees.

• Exercise regularly. Even after the episode of pain has ended, regular exercise is really important in reducing the risk of recurrent back pain. Certain aerobic exercises are safer for your back than others. These include swimming, walking or cycling (either stationary or regular). Make these

exercises a part of your regular exercise routine.

Add back-strengthening exercises to strengthen the muscles that support your spine. (I’ve put examples of some back-strengthening exercises on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) Finally, add some stretching to your exercise routine. Supple, well-stretched muscles are less prone to injury.

Keep up these good habits even after your discomfort is gone. During an episode of low back pain, a person typically moves cautiously. You’re more likely to bend the knees when picking something up, and sit down and get up with care.

Such back-saving maneuvers, along with a back-strengthening exercise program, should become lifelong habits to help reduce your risk of repeat back pain.

Your doctor can prescribe treatments to help you deal with an episode of back pain – pain-killing medicines and physical therapy of various sorts. But more important is what you can do for yourself.

Can teen be forced to move?

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and a senior in high school. My mother and stepfather and I don’t get along at all. I’ll be 18 in two months. My parents said they are making me move out of the house on my 18th birthday because they consider me “double trouble.”

Can my parents literally force me out of the house even though I’ll still be in school?

The only place I can go is my grandmother’s house, and that would mean I’d have to change schools. – Nameless, Columbus, Ohio Dear Nameless: Do your parents really mean what they’re saying, or are they trying to call your bluff and force you into changing your behavior? Legally, yes, your parents can make you leave home after you turn 18. Morally and ethically, it’s another matter.

Talk to your school counselor and have him or her set up a meeting with you and your parents to see if this crisis – expulsion from home – can be averted, at least until you graduate. Of course, you would have to agree to abide by their rules and eliminate your “double trouble” image.

You are fortunate you can stay at your grandmother’s until you are able to be independent. If that’s the way it’s going to turn out, learn from your mistakes and behave yourself so Grandmother will be proud of you.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 17-year-old senior in high school. I’m an honors student, play in the band, compete in girls’ cross-country and softball, and I am vice president of our senior class. I enjoy school,

I enjoy the company of males, but my dad refuses to allow me to date until I graduate from high school. That means I will miss my senior prom and all other boy-girl functions, including the Sadie Hawkins dance. My mom disagrees with my dad’s dating philosophy, but there is nothing she can say or do, because my dad is the boss. I sort of like my dad, but I hate him ruining my entire school social life.

Any advice to help me will be very important and I will be very grateful. – Nameless, San Diego, California Dear Nameless: Your father is making a serious mistake that could create lasting father-daughter friction.

Fortunately, many times parents will change their minds when a trusted adult discusses matters with them. Talk to your counselor and see if he or she can meet with you and your parents, at school or in your home. The counselor’s intervention may broaden your father’s perspective and get him to loosen his grip on your social activities. Make sure Dad reads this column.

“There are only two things I don’t like about her. Her face.”

Although that is snide, it is funny. The key word for today’s deal, though, is “two.” How should South play in three no-trump after West has led the spade queen?

North’s bidding problem is difficult. Discuss it with your partner.

It is easy for declarer to get careless on this deal by taking the first trick, cashing the ace of clubs, and playing another club. With this layout, though, he goes down.

There are two ways to collect nine tricks: one spade, two diamonds and six clubs; or one spade, five diamonds and three clubs.

South should try for both. Also, if he needs five diamond tricks, he should finesse dummy’s jack. (To cash the ace and king of diamonds immediately, hoping to drop the doubleton queen while declarer still has communication in clubs, is against the odds.)

South should win trick one, play a club to dummy’s king, then return a club to his ace. If the suit splits, he goes to dummy with a diamond to the king, and runs the clubs. Here, though, when West discards a heart on the second club, declarer leads a low diamond to dummy’s jack, cashes the diamond king, and claims nine tricks.

This is a rare example of a deal in which “the honor from the shorter side first” is the wrong play.
