Shooting range gives officers more opportunities to train

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – With the unveiling of its new shooting range Thursday, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office announced a state-of-the-art regional training center for all of the county’s law enforcement community to use.

“This is very exciting for us,” Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said to a crowd of law-enforcement representatives and county officials as the new facility, adjacent to the sheriff’s main facility, was presented.

Perez said after the old facility on Fabyan Parkway was rendered unusable because of flooding, the department relied on the St. Charles Police Department’s training facility.

The new shooting range has room for 15 officers to shoot, a storage area, another area for officers to clean their guns and an air-handling system that pulls out all the residue from shooting, then cleans and recycles it.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the first responsibility to the citizens is public safety, and he thanked Kane County Board members who supported the project.

Kronewitter said the nearly $2 million project came in $500 under budge and finished in four months instead of five.

“We were able to add some features to the project, including some expansion to a storage room between the firing range and the existing sally port ... about 700 square feet,” Kronewitter said. “The total value of that was about $60,000, which was savings we

realized through the project, and [we] were able to implement that and still keep them $500 below their final budget.”

Kreschel said county representatives created a good team during the project, specifically Operations Staff Executive Donald Biggs, Sgt. Tim Flowers and Sgt. Chris Peeler.

Peeler, who also serves as a shooting range officer, explained the new design has bullets going slowly into rubber instead of hitting steel

and breaking apart, spreading lead residue all over. Peeler said officials also would be able to have a company come, collect the lead and pay the county for it.

Peeler also praised the Kane County Board for approving a project as essential to safety.

“The most important thing is the ability to train,” Peeler said. “Because the bottom line is, you don’t want a police officer that comes in and qualifies once a year. You want a police officer that’s training throughout the year, maintaining those skill levels – because shooting is a perishable skill.”

Ongoing training is essential to saving lives, Peeler said.

“If you had to bet your life in shooting basketball, and you didn’t shoot but once a year, would you want that person coming to save your life? Absolutely not,” Peeler said. “You want someone that maintains a training regime throughout the year, keeps those skills up at the highest level, especially when it comes to saving someone’s life, which is basically what our job is.”

Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said the shooting range “will be very beneficial to all

of the agencies in the area.”

“And I appreciate the fact that they are offering it to other law-enforcement agencies,” Nash said.

Perez said the money to build the new range was generated from housing federal inmates from the Metropolitan Correctional Center for the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

In the past two years, that service generated $2.1 million and $2.7 million in revenue, so the shooting range was built without tax dollars or borrowing money, Perez said.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Fox Ridge Elementary School physical education teacher Katie Ryan said she doesn’t have to do much to motivate her students to participate in gym classes.

“They love it,” Ryan said.

“They love coming down.”

As part of a new law, school districts across the state will have to implement physical assessments to help students set individual fitness goals and help teachers address individual student needs. Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill into law in August.

The legislation builds on new physical education and health learning standards adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education earlier this year.

The new standards focus on personal fitness and wellness and the connection between learning and fitness.

Fox Ridge and the other schools in St. Charles School District 303 track the fitness progress of their students.

“We’ve already been doing the FitnessGram for many years,” Ryan said. “So it won’t be a big change here in our district, other than sending it to the state.”

The new law creates a system to monitor the aggregate fitness levels of Illinois youth over time. A task force, comprised in part of school health advocates and experts and organizations representing physical education teachers, school officials and principals, will be set up to develop the protocols and approaches to statewide fitness testing. Schools would be required to implement the testing in the fall of 2016. According to FitnessGram’s website, FitnessGram is a comprehensive educational, reporting and promotional tool used to assess physical fitness and physical

It first was developed in 1982 by the Cooper Institute and is the most widely used children’s health-related physical fitness assessment in the world.

The assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that are used to determine students’ overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement when appropriate. As part of the FitnessGram system, kids see where the healthy fitness zone is for each of the different tests in the FitnessGram.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth by the kids actually being able to see the data and how they’re doing,” Ryan said.

“It shows what their score was last year and where they are at right now, if maybe they have improved or stayed the same.”

Elissa Bassler, executive director of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity and CEO of the Illinois Public Health Institute, praised the legislation as

a way to address the obesity epidemic in children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity in the United States has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. A child with excess body fat is considered overweight or obese. Doctors take several factors into consideration – including weight, age, height and gender – to determine whether a child fits one of those categories.

Locally, Kane County’s 2011 Community Health Assessment indicates that 21.8 percent of children younger than 18 are considered obese.

“One of the things that we know about physical education is that it really can lay a foundation for lifelong fitness,” Bassler said. “It’s a great part of the mix of things that we need to be doing to address the obesity epidemic in children, and the related epidemics of diabetes and other diseases.”

She said being able to test the fitness of children statewide will have many benefits.

“We can track fitness overall for students, which is important, so we know where we need to go,” Bassler said. “The fitness testing is really designed to help students become more fit and teachers to address the needs of specific children.”

She said the research shows fit kids learn better. Geneva School District 304 and Batavia School District 101 officials also are preparing for the new law.

“There has been an increase in recent years in the overall attention being paid to health and fitness at all levels,” Kelley Munch, the Geneva school district communications coordinator, said in an email. “This law will simply build on that focus.

Our staff members are aware of the law, and the curriculum committees for the areas of physical education and health are looking at options in terms of what tools and resources are

Batavia School District 101 Chief Academic Officer Brad Newkirk said the district has a team of physical education teachers who are working together with the administration to implement the new enhanced physical education standards.

The district already tracks the fitness of students.

“Our high school was using a FitnessGram product, the middle school was tracking those same types of skills in a different way, and the elementary schools were doing some testing in a different way, as well,” Newkirk said.

He sees the value in doing the testing.

“Their physical health is important,” Newkirk said. “So what is important should be measured. Measuring a kid’s physical development and their physical fitness is something that’s important, so we should be tracking it.”

D-303 School Board mulls synthetic turf at high schools ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles School District 303 Board committee on Thursday discussed a few options for the future of the stadium athletic fields at its two high schools, including whether they should install synthetic turf.

District officials during the regular Business Services Committee Meeting presented the options of installing

the turf at St. Charles North and East high schools, replacing the entire stadium field at St. Charles North or keeping things the same.

District administration did not have a recommendation for the committee, nor did the committee take any action on the fields. The school board will likely want a better financial picture of where the district is at before any action is taken, St. Charles Superintendent Don Schlomann said after the

meeting.

Synthetic turf would result in less annual costs for the district, but the initial investment would be $875,000 a field, said Seth Chapman, District 303 assistant superintendent of business services.

The synthetic turf also would have to be replaced in about 10 years at a cost between $425,000 and $450,000.

The district had an initial discussion with District 303 sports boosters about having their group cover most of

the cost of the replacement, assuming they can collect $30,000 in contributions every year, Schlomann said.

Under the second option, replacing the St. Charles north stadium field would have an initial cost of $430,000, with projected costs of $25,000 every five years. If the district keeps the fields the same, the initial cost would be $25,000, but with a projected $100,000 in recurring costs every five years.

The St. Charles East and

North athletic directors on Thursday spoke to the committee about how the current fields become compromised after their prolonged use during the fall and spring sports seasons. More sports teams and school groups would be able to utilize synthetic turf fields, St. Charles Athletic Director Mike Sommerfeld said.

“It would just provide more opportunities for our kids, most certainly,” he said of the synthetic turf fields.

Kane County Morgue remodeling underway Coroner says meeting with board chairman was productive

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County is getting a renovated morgue, as crews began work this week to gut and remodel it, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

The morgue temporarily closed in June because of mold contamination, and autopsies have been outsourced to the DuPage County Morgue.

Russell and Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen in the past months appears to have thawed a bit this week. Russell said he met Monday in a private session with the chairman, along with Chief Deputy Coroner Loren Carrera and Operations Staff Executive Donald Biggs, and they worked out some common goals.

“We discussed what it would take to get the morgue open, and we got a list of things we agreed on fixing,” Russell said. “We do not have final numbers, but $76,000 was already budgeted for the freezer-cooler combination.”

Russell said final construction costs have not yet been figured out.

“We are just trying to retrofit something in here to get us through the next five years

using the existing facilities,” Russell said. “The building is not big enough, but what we’re basically going to be doing is replacing what we have.”

While the morgue will not have more capacity, the new cooler-freezer combination will be something that can be removed and expanded into a new building.

“I told the Judicial and Public Safety Committee that we could make it here another five years, in this building, limping along, but that we need to be walking into a new building in five years,” Russell said. “It’s not just the age of the building, but the space here. We can’t really expand anywhere.”

Biggs and Lauzen did not return messages seeking comment.

Genevieve was a longtime member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Geneva. For many years, she worked at The Merra Lee Shop and Erday’s Clothier both in Geneva. In 1985, Genevieve and Douglas were passengers aboard TWA flight 847 when the plane was hijacked by Shiite Hezbollah terrorists.

Roger served on staff with Tri-State Youth for Christ in Evansville, Indiana, where he met his wife, Jan (Blum) Crites. He also served as Youth Pastor at First United Methodist Church, Carrollton, Texas and was an Associate Pastor at World Gospel Church in Terre Haute, Indiana. For the past 19 years, he has served as Pastor of Congregation Care at First Baptist Church, Geneva, Illinois. Roger’s love for his Lord, his family and his passion for loving and serving others will leave a lasting legacy in the lives of all the people he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jan (Blum) Crites; his daughter, Amy Gregory (Jim) of Hiawatha, Iowa; his son, Jonathan (Monica) of Euless, Texas; and his grandsons, Josiah and Matthias Gregory.

Smallcakes: A Cupcakery of St. Charles, opened for business on Sept. 12 at 117 W. Main St., Suite 120, St. Charles, said Tina Wackerlin, who is the St. Charles store franchisee with her husband, Eric.

The store is behind Forever Yogurt and below Szechwan near the southeast corner of Main Street and Second Street (Route 31).

The St. Charles Smallcakes offers 15 signature flavors made every day, and two different daily special flavors every day of the week.

Cookies and brownies also are available, Wackerlin said.

The store in the future plans to sell cupcake milkshakes and treat pops and will have seasonal items

Smallcakes founder Jeff Martin opened the first Smallcakes in July 2009 in Overland Park, Kansas, according to the Smallcakes website.

Wackerlin discovered Smallcakes through Jill Wackerlin-Watson, a cousin of Wackerlin’s husband

who opened the other Illinois Smallcakes in Naperville earlier this year.

Wackerlin said she decided to pursue opening a Smallcakes location because she has been an avid baker since she was a young child.

“I knew how to bake, I just didn’t know the ins and outs of the franchise at the time,” Wackerlin said.

Wackerlin looked at locations on Randall Road and Main Street for her shop, and

settled on 117 W. Main St. because it appeared to have the most foot traffic.

That held true on Thursday as a steady stream of customers bought cupcakes.

Angelica Cataldo of Huntley, and Jesse Garner of Aurora, each ate a cupcake from the store on the First Street Plaza.

“Their cupcakes are a lot sweeter and a lot bigger than I’ve ever seen,” Cataldo said.

“I was quite satisfied.”

A jury trial is still set to begin on Jan. 12 for a woman charged in a stabbing death at the Batavia Apartments complex.

Latoya Baines, 27, who lived at the Batavia Apartments complex on East Wilson Street at the time of the stabbing, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the April 30, 2012, stabbing Latoya Baines death of Chicago resident Gerald J. Jackson, 25. Police said the stabbing was the result of a domestic dispute.

Baines had a court appearance on Thursday. A status hearing on the case is set for Oct. 15.

Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles recently ruled against a motion by Baines’ defense attorney that her client didn’t understand her Miranda rights before being interviewed by Batavia police.

Baines’ defense attorney, Sandra Byrd, had filed a motion seeking to suppress evidence obtained through four

interviews Batavia police had with Baines. During the interviews, Baines told police she had a knife in her hand, but did not confess to the murder, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Christine Bayer had said.

Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz had testified Baines told him she was bipolar after she was told she was being charged with first-degree murder. Police responding to the initial incident in 2012 found two women, one of them Baines, struggling with each other at the bottom of a stairwell. Officers said they later found three knives in the hallway where the women had been struggling.

“Evidence in this case points to [Baines] being in possession of three knives before the stabbing of Jackson, and being in possession of one knife at the time that Jackson was stabbed,” according to court records.

After conducting a field investigation, police said they were able to determine the incident occurred as a result of a domestic dispute between the victim and Baines.

Baines remains in the Kane County Jail on a $750,000 bail. She has been in custody for more than 800 days. adno=0278935

Sheriff expands drug drop-off to Sugar Grove, Pingree Grove

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez announced a new partnership with the police departments in Sugar Grove and Pingree Grove to provide prescription drug drop-off boxes at both of the police departments.

Perez made the announcement of the expansion of its drug drop-off program Thursday after the opening of a new shooting range. Sugar Grove Police Chief Pat Rollins and Pingree Police Chief Carol Lussky joined Perez at the announcement.

“We have agreed to a partnership ... to expand the outreach for people to have the ability to take their unused or unwanted prescription meds to properly dispose of them,” Perez said.

While the sheriff’s office has a disposal box for all county residents to use, Perez said bringing the service to the far north and south ends of the county brings the service to them, rather than expecting them to come to the center of the county to dispose of prescription drugs.

“When you get to the far reaches of the county ... it’s not as convenient for the people who live there. So we thought this is a case of instead of expecting them to come to use, let’s go to them,” Perez said.

Perez said the announcement follows the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, so the boxes will be in place to serve their residents.

“If you follow the reason for the heroin epidemic in this area – in Kane, DuPage and Cook [counties] – a good majority of the people who become addicted start by abusing prescription meds,” Perez said.

People who have leftover pain medicines should not flush them, but should avail themselves of the drug dropoffs, Perez said.

With the introduction of the county’s drop-off boxes in Sugar Grove and Pingree Grove, county residents will not have to wait for the semi-annual DEA drop-off event, nor will they have to drive to the sheriff’s office, Perez said.

Kane County evidence technicians will be responsible for installing the boxes and picking up the droppedoff drugs, Perez said. The drugs then are picked up by the DEA and destroyed, he said.

Residents who drop off drugs will not have to provide paperwork for a transaction, Perez said, comparing the drug drop-off to being as easy as dropping letter in a mail box.

Rollins said it will reduce county residents’ exposure to having excess drugs in their homes while waiting for the twice-a-year DEA drug dropoff event.

“The nice thing is, it will go from two times a year for dropping off prescription drugs to year-round, every day,” Rollins said. “They won’t have to wait ... they will have an avenue to drop it off that day.”

Perez said the purchase of the drug drop boxes is covered by forfeited money from arrested drug dealers.

BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 officials want to put a fresh face on the district’s website.

“Our website is kind of old,” Tony Inglese, the district’s chief information officer, told School Board members Tuesday. “Our website was not designed for mobile devices. We need the website to work with all devices. We want to develop a website that really connects with people in a meaningful way.”

The website, www.bps101. net, is 3 years old, and its current structure and design is inflexible, he said.

Sue Gillerlain, the district’s communications manager, said the district wants to make the website as user-friendly as it can be.

As part of the planning process for a new website, the district will conduct focus groups with parents, students, staff and community members to find out what they want.

“We want users to be able to find information easily,” she said.

Board member Sue Locke agreed that the website could be easier to use.

NFL needs a new team I’m not big on football, maybe because in middle school our coach, a 300-pound ex-Marine, demonstrated how to block by using me as a dummy.

“This is how it’s done, Holinger. Get up here.” He went into his mountainous three-point stance opposite me, his weasel eyes full of anger and disappointment. “On hut-three,” he ordered the center.

After hearing “hut-three,” I was airborne for a good five minutes, landing a block away, breathless, but knowing how to block: You pretend the player across from you is your middle school football coach, and you want to send him to Montana.

So I understand why NFL players, when irked, might prove violent. In fact, so many NFL football players have allegedly committed hands-on or sticks-on acts of aggression against women and children that they could practically field their own team.

But what to call themselves?

Surely they’d pick a name denoting their unique talent: roaring, clawing, out-of-control behavior.

Maybe the Chargers? Oh, wait, that’s taken. The Bears? Nope.

Lions? Oops. Vikings? Sorry.

I get it. Most NFL team names highlight animals that frequently threaten or take human lives; or encourage Neanderthal-weak mindsets reminiscent of pillaging, rape and other acts of barbarism.

So why are we shocked – shocked! – when hearing some of the NFL’s best have ruthlessly attacked weaker family members? Lions and Bears and Steelers (cold, heartless, impenetrable), oh, my!

I’m no lawyer (although I play one in my column), but I’m thinking this new team deserves to be called the San Quentin Sanitizers, befitting their new venue – mopping common room tile, lidless toilets and curtainless shower stalls.

The national media has glommed onto the reprobates’ stories, leading nightly newscasts with NFL updates, thus relegating

They took a switch to you. They kicked your behind, and that was that.”

Nothing like using the seventh-grade excuse when caught pulling a girl’s hair, “Everyone does it.”

Oh, well, at least we have one NFL team whose name reflects a positive, spiritually uplifting style of play; too bad not all NFL players can be Saints.

An assault on the student newspaper THE WASHINGTON POST The students who edit the newspaper at Neshaminy High School think the nickname of their Pennsylvania school’s sports teams is racist. They banned its use on their pages, a stance in keeping with that taken on the national scene by those (including us) who object to Washington’s identically named pro football team.

You would think young people engaging with an important social issue and standing up for something they believe in would be appreciated, even applauded. Instead, school officials suspended the newspaper’s editor, sanctioned the adviser and fined the organization.

School administrators, who didn’t respond to our inquiries, removed Gillian

McGoldrick from her post as editor in chief for a month, suspended without pay for two days newspaper adviser Tara Huber (who in June had been named Journalism Teacher of the Year by the state school press association) and docked $1,200 from its student activity fund.

People may differ on whether the school’s sports moniker – like that of Washington’s team – is offensive, but there should be no disagreement about journalists exercising their rights.

In Neshaminy, it is the students who are behaving like grown-ups. We admire their commitment to stand up for what they think is right.

MOVING RIGHT ALONG McCloughan, Perry bolster Vikings’ defense with shift

ENEVA – Imagining a line of scrimmage underneath him, Geneva senior Jack McCloughan positioned himself as a tight end and defensive end in brief intervals.

“Besides how you align your feet, there’s not much difference,” McCloughan said. “You still have to react fast and you have to think in tough situations. And just getting off the ball, all-around, quickly is good.”

McCloughan and classmate Brock Perry, a wide receiver turned safety, transitioned from offense to defense before the season. Through four weeks, they’ve made it look as seamless as McCloughan makes it sound, much to the delight of the unbeaten Geneva football team.

Both McCloughan and Perry have roots as defensive players at lower levels. McCloughan shifted to offense after his sophomore season, with Perry clearing a path one year earlier.

That background ultimately has helped steer both players to success as part of an overall defensive overhaul. It also eased coach Rob Wicinski’s trepidation about shaking up the program’s depth charts once more.

The impetus was simple: “We needed to put more athletes on the other side of the ball,” Wicinski said. Geneva allowed 301 points in 10 games in 2013.

In 2012, it was 286 in nine.

Given their versatility and the weapons surrounding Northern Illinois-bound senior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina, McCloughan and Perry emerged as prime candidates for a return to ‘D.’ “We tried to up the ante,” Wicinski said. “In the day, I’d get the quarterback and I’d get the tailback. Everybody else was fair game. Well, I got a little stingy as the years rolled on, so I kind of said, ‘All right, I get these two, you guys pick and choose.’ And so those are two very good athletes that we’ve got on the opposite side of the ball.”

Geneva needed their instincts during a visit from defending Class 6A runner-up Richards in Week 2.

The marquee matchup Film buff Dennis Piron, Batavia’s fourth-year coach, analyzed video of the North Stars’ Week 4 loss to Geneva, saying just a handful of plays kept the Vikings’ 31-13 win from “being played dead-even.”

The difference, in Piron’s view: Geneva struck for some opportunistic pass plays early, sandwiched around Pace Temple’s interception return for a touchdown.

Led by highly-recruited defensive end Jordan Bergren and outside linebacker Jack Callaghan, North’s defense held serve in key spots. It must maintain that intensity throughout against a versatile Batavia attack that now has running back Blake Crowder healthy alongside quarterbacks Evan Acosta and Kyle Niemiec.

“They’ve got an awfully big offensive line that is big and physical,” North Stars coach Rob Pomazak said. “But you also have to respect the fact that they’re extremely balanced. Normally,

you just have to prepare for one quarterback, but now you have to prepare for two, and both of them bring something to the table.””

The X-factor Piron sees great potential from North’s attack, namely in athletic quarterback Kyle Novotney, who he called “like a really elusive running back at the quarterback position.”

With Dom Sidari (back) out, North will have junior Jake Spaniol and recent sophomore call-up Eric Lins in the backfield. After a strong second half against Geneva, sophomore Tyler Mettetal joins senior Nathan Didier as a weapon in the passing game.

“That read option game and inverted veer, that kind of stuff can cause you a lot of problems,” Piron said. “We’re doing what we can do to prepare against it.”

Best-case scenario for the North Stars Whether it’s Acosta or Niemiec under center, North’s front seven makes life uncomfortable for the Bulldogs and neutralizes Batavia’s vaunted Dog Pound cheering section when it can.

Building on that momentum, the North Stars gain an advantage at the line of scrimmage when they have the ball as they take care of the football and keep Novotney clean.

“Obviously, Batavia is a great football team, and this is a tough stretch in our schedule,” Pomazak said, “but we got back on the practice field after Geneva and started to fix some mistakes that we knew we could.”

Best-case scenario for the Bulldogs Batavia picks up where it left off against The Pride of the Fox’s other team, building from last week’s 40-7 win at St. Charles East and keeping a comfortable cushion before a vocal home crowd.

Along with their array of formations, the Bulldogs unleash a few more tricks to keep North defenders guessing – and moving.

“We’re excited about the opportunity,” Piron said. “They’re coming to our place and we’re looking forward to a very a good football game.”

Trailing after the first quarter-turn, East’s A team relay picked up the pace to come home in 3:37.06, besting St. Charles North’s A-team time of Jordan 3:42.99.

Pearson said the atmosphere and the relationships with the opposition made the thrill of winning even better.

“I’m really not overly worried about dual meets right now,” Rooney said. “We’ve kind of got a little bit of a different vibe and perspective going right now; we’re not trying to preserve a dual meet win. We’re trying to paint our picture for the end the right way. We didn’t come in here and light the world up. We came in here like little warriors, tired, beat up and we

North won the diving portion of the meet, 40-38, while the Guyett sisters took the accolades in a variety of events.

Monica Guyett won the 200 free with a 1:54.79, edging out Pearson at 1:55.14 and O’Malley at 2:02.17.

Later she would clip Pearson again in the 500 free with a 5:04.60.

Audrey Guyett won the 200 individual medley with ease, cruising to a six-second win over Herb behind a time of 2:07.46.

But East was able to capture the 100 butterfly as Morling edged out Audrey Guyett, while Herb won the 100 backstroke.

With a number of girls competing in relays for both sides, East coach Joe Cabel said that the 800 meters his girls swam was nothing compared to the 8,000 they do in practice.

Just to say, this is it, this is probably one of the hardest meets of the season and the fact that we were able to pull through it is a huge confidence boost for myself and everyone else on my team.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East boys soccer made sure it was going to earn a berth to the title match of its tournament Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 victory against Marmion in pool play.

The Saints will face Glenbard North at noon Saturday for the title. Before that match, Marmion will face Elgin for third place at 10 a.m.

“I thought we played pretty well,” Saints senior forward Zach Manibog said. “We had a lot of good movement off the ball and with the ball, Zach I felt. We did Manibog create a lot of chances to score today. We did come out flat in the first half, but we found ourselves pushing forward a Paul lot more in the second half.”

Jennison Manibog was not kidding. While the Saints outshot the Cadets, 5-1, in the opening half, they could not solve the defensive stance of the Cadets and junior goalkeeper Matt Fletcher (four saves).

For as sluggish as the Saints performed in the opening 40 minutes of play, the Cadets were able to hang around and get some ball movement in the middle of the field. But that is where it ended for Marmion, which could not muster much else in the offensive zone.

“Every game we play in is important,” Manibog said. “It just gets us more playing time together and more in-game experience. I am looking forward to being in the title game Saturday.”

Grace’s influence may be in Geneva ... or not

Patience, people.

With the Cougars and Arizona Diamondbacks announcing Wednesday a two-year player-development contract through 2016, D’backs farm director Mike Bell acknowledged Mark Grace might be ticketed for a Class-A managerial job next season.

Bell also was clear the former longtime Cubs first baseman boasted an enviable ceiling, and may even be targeted by another organization.

Grace served as hitting coach for Arizona’s Short-A affiliate Hillsboro (Oregon) Hops in 2014, helping the club win the Northwest League title.

“He can do a lot of different things,” Bell said. “We’re talking about a guy that was a very good Major League player. He’s been an outstanding coach for us. He could certainly be in Kane County, he could be at Triple-A, he could be on somebody’s Major League staff.”

Grace, 50, spent 13 of his 16 big league seasons with the Cubs before finishing his career with the D’backs, with whom he won the 2001 World Series.

Once his playing career ended, Grace served as the D’backs’ TV color analyst for eight-plus seasons, but gained attention for the wrong reasons earlier this decade by accumulating two DUI charges in 15 months.

He entered coaching in 2013 and worked extensively with Arizona hitters across all levels during 2014 spring training.

“I think there’s going to be Major League teams looking at Mark,” Bell said. “He’s committed himself to coaching.

He’s done it at the lowest levels. He’s a hard worker. I think when other teams pick up on that – guys willing to go back and work their butt off – those guys don’t usually last long in the minor leagues.”

South Bend’s Midwest League team isn’t scheduled to make its next regular season visit to Geneva until 2016. When it does, the team will be called the Cubs after changing its name from Silver Hawks on Thursday. which D’backs prospects wind up in Kane County to begin 2015 a far from scientific undertaking.

To be sure, several Hillsboro players figure to break camp with the Cougars given the natural progression from Short-A to Class-A, but independent league tryouts, spring training and several other factors all will play roles in the next few months.

“We’re constantly trying to make our organization the best it can be,” Bell said. “It’s extremely hard. While we have projections on the board of where players are going to, if we’re 25 percent correct, we’re ahead of the game.”

A pair of Illinoisans were on the Hops’ roster at the end of the regular season. Leyden and Park Ridge product Dan Savas, a 6-foot-5, 241-pound right-hander, would be noticeable regardless of his hometown. Outfielder Jordan Parr is from downstate Chillicothe.

Through Thursday, the D’backs (63-96) had the worst record in the majors, which would put the organization in line for the No. 1 pick in the June 2015 draft.

“You never know,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said. “That person could end up here. .. We might benefit from that here in the future.”

The affiliate shuffle: Haug agreed the past 10 days have been a “whirlwind.” The Cougars, then aligned with the Cubs, capped a 98-49 season and won the Midwest League championship Sept.

Clearwater, Florida, visited Wrigley Field for the first time this season. The Cubs drafted him in 2012.

“It was great to go see that atmosphere and stuff like that, and know that’s what we’re working toward,” Rogers said.

“We want to get there. Everybody in this clubhouse, I mean, that’s one of our goals is to make it to the big leagues and play at Wrigley.”

With South Bend in the Midwest League’s Eastern Division and the Cougars in the West, Cubs farmhands will play in Geneva sparingly in the near-term.

The Cougars visit South Bend for separate three-games series in 2015 and 2017, with South Bend returning the favor in 2016 and 2018.

Silver anniversary on tap: Arizona follows the Baltimore Orioles, Florida (now Miami) Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals and Cubs as Cougars parent teams since the club began play in Geneva in 1991.

Expect reminiscences from every era when the Cougars celebrate their 25th anniversary season in 2015.

“There’s a lot to look forward to,” Haug said. “We appreciate all the fan support and we appreciate all the people who are part of Cougars baseball. It’s going to be an exciting year for us next year.”

The first in a series of major planning meetings is set for mid-October.

“It’ll be the busiest offseason the Cougars have ever had,” Cougars owner Bob Froehlich said.

From Saints to Snakes: Wayne Randazzo (2002) and Matt Reynolds (2003) aren’t terribly far removed from their St. Charles East graduations.

These days, they’re working within the same big league organization.

Randazzo will enter his fourth season as the Cougars radio broadcaster in 2015, while Reynolds, a left-handed reliever, looks to return to form after missing this season after Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2013.

Randazzo previously called games for a D’backs affiliate when he worked with the Double-A Mobile (Alabama) Bay Bears from 2008 to 2011.

LAKE FOREST – It’s Packers week, so it’s time to harp on Jay Cutler’s struggles against the Packers.

“I don’t know what it is,” Cutler responded to a question about his record vs. Green Bay (it’s 1-8), “I know it’s not a winning record.”

Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers has had Cutler’s number over the years, and it extends one game past the Packers-Bears rivalry. When Capers was a secondary coach in New England and Cutler the quarterback in Denver, the Patriots intercepted Cutler twice in a 41-7 win in 2008.

“I mean, there’s a few wrinkles here and there, personnel has just changed a little bit, you know that you’re going to get some different looks and they’re going to spin it and show you different blitzes and different coverages so he does a good job of mixing it up,” Cutler said of Capers’ defenses.

Offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said Capers’ defenses are generally sound in technique and gap responsbility, and that the third-down defense makes it especially challenging for offenses.

“Their corners, their nickel really carry the receivers tightly and you have to make accurate throws on third down to move the chains,” he said. “The No. 1 thing for this game is to make sure we can continue drives and advance on third down.”

For competitive reasons, Marc Trestman wouldn’t go into detail on what he expects to see from Capers, knowing the Packers’ defensive mind’s history against Cutler.

“It’s always challenging to play against him. The things he brings, not only front structure, which sometimes things appear to be simpler than they are. They’re very well coached,” Trestman said.

Cutler could hang his hat on how he played in his only game against Capers with the Trestman offense, obviously a vastly different group than he had in previous meetings with Green Bay. In Week 17 last season, Cutler completed 15-of-24 passes

Scouts honor Learning how to be good citizens in the community Hats off to Fred Norris who recently took the ice bucket challenge for ALS. I smiled as did many others who appreciate a generous gesture given by a good sport.

Sometimes there is just the right touch to promote further participation.

No! No! No! I am not volunteering. No, I am not as old as Fred, but he is much better preserved. If put on the spot I might consider a pie-in-the face for polio or a don’t text and drive sign on my wheelchair ... .

Fred recounted the suffering from ALS that his and Lee’s sister Joy experienced. Two images emerged for me: all those walks together up the hill to school and Girl Scouts.

So many of my St. Charles High School ’56-ers knew Joy from the first days at Evan Shelby School. Those living in town had no bus ride, so there was a special link with walking buddies. Joy and I were bottom-of-the-hill climbers for years. At the same time, we linked up as did many in Girl Scout Troop 21.

Aside from the fun, marching in parades and campfire ghost stories from our leader, Grace Norris, one important lesson emerged. Aside from learning to be good citizens at home, school and church – we actually took a pledge! – words such as honor, duty and helping others took on a fresh impact.

As the political campaigns shift into high gear, wouldn’t it be something if each redundant

Speaking of Scouts, the good news is that through the efforts of volunteers and a supportive community young people with strong values and integrity continue to emerge.

Here’s a wonderful example: This summer in Batavia, several young men earned the ultimate honor and became Eagle Scouts.

Brandon Ayersman took on a challenging project to restore and update the parks around his former elementary school, Louise White.

Working with the park district and a crew of more than 40 volunteers, he put in 148 hours and used 20 trucks of mulch to accomplish the task – a combination of imagination, resolve, hard work and leadership are attributes that he has carried on to college in the engineering school at Northwestern University.

Before he passed away earlier this year, Stanley “Gibby” Monokoski inspired students and others through his nearly four decades of promotion of music, education and the arts at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, state a news release.

Monokoski, of Geneva, was a professor of music at Waubonsee, where he taught music theory, composition, music literature and jazz piano, while coordinating the college’s music performance program for more than 39 years.

The evening event will take place at 7 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 10, in the Academic and Professional Center at Waubonsee’s Sugar Grove Campus, located at Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive.

The concert will feature a variety of performers, including Waubonsee alumnus and bluegrass recording artist Ashley Lewis; a number of Monokoski’s musical and academic

colleagues; and Waubonsee’s student ensembles, including the college’s steel band, concert band, jazz band and chorale.

Within the community, Monokoski served as president of the Fox Valley Symphony until it closed in 2001 and as a member of the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame Board of Directors, the release

Among other honors, Monokoski was recognized as Teacher of the Year among all Illinois community colleges in 1987, and in 2013, he received the inaugural Fox Valley Orchestra’s Champion of the Arts award. He was often noted for his performances across the nation as a trumpeter and a jazz pianist, states the release.

Monokoski passed away April 9 at the age of 63.

Song won the Carl J. Levinson Award for Best Surgical Video in the field of gynecologic surgery, as well as the Carl J. Levinson Award for Best Overall Minimally Invasive Surgical Video, the release states.

Song is one of three physicians who work at TLC Medical Group along with Dr. Gina Song (his wife) and Dr. Kathy Seskiewicz.

Song also has won first

place at the 2009 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Meeting for his work for alternatives to hysterectomy, as well as the IRCAD award from Strasbourg, France, for his work in laparoscopic tubal re-anastomosis for patients who de-

sired a tubal reversal, the release states.

He is currently the active chair of the robotics surgery program at Cadence-Delnor campus, and is an assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

By Michelle Diamond For some children, learning how to read to can be a struggle. Reading can become a chore rather than an adventure with a big red dog or other lovable childhood characters.

So how do you get your child to read, not just as homework, but to love reading? How do you help your child to form a lifelong relationship with books?

Parents can help their children to enjoy reading by making sure books are a constant, positive force in their child’s everyday life. Reading with your child every day will help develop lifelong readers.

1. Read aloud with enthusiasm and animation, changing your voice inflections frequently.

2. Use your index finger to sweep under the words. This trains the child’s eye to read from left to right.

3. Explore different types of reading with your child. Echo

reading is when the parent reads a short passage and the child repeats it. Partner reading is when you and your child take turns reading out loud to each other.

4. Make a book chain. When you or your child reads a book, write the title on a strip of colored paper. Each book would add a link in a chain of previously read books.

5. Record your child reading, and play the recording back.

6. Plan a reading night or reading hour when everyone in the family spends time reading without distractions. Modeling this behavior will reinforce the fact that reading is important to your family.

Subaru’s mission in the United States includes more than reliable all-wheel-drive sedans and sport utility crossovers. It also has the rear-wheeldrive BRZ coupe and a sport stablemate in the WRX. Like the Legacy and Impreza but unlike the BRZ, the WRX is a sedan with all-wheel-drive. It is the company’s flagship sport sedan and can be equipped with the company’s STI performance ingredients. A 2015 edition of the STI model was delivered for a week of test driving.

On the exterior, the WRX STI is a splendid example of what a compact sport sedan should look like from the defined air scoop on the rounded hood to the exaggerated foot-tall spoiler at the rear. That spoiler helps lift the 3,388-pound sedan through sharp turns at fast speeds. At each of the rear corners are twin alloy tailpipe exhausts.

Front fenders are creased and squaredoff. The 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels are supported by five sharp-looking V-spokes. The ride is relatively hard as Subaru wants occupants “to feel” the road.

The spoiler helps stability by creating downforce at high speeds, the hood scoop channels air into the turbo’s intercoolers and the fender bulges add airflow to cool the Brembo brakes.

The STI has Subaru’s iconic boxer engine (two banks of flat pistons horizontally opposed to each other), but the tweaking of the turbocharged, 305-horsepower, four-cylinder while matched to a six-speed manual transmission results in a road rocket. This STI has been tested at 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds. It also has been braked, in factory and auto media tests, from 60 mph to 0 in 107 feet. The sixspeed transmission has hill-start assist, which is nice when idling on an incline in tight traffic and preparing to shift into first gear.

Since the tested WRX was a topof-the-line $38,495 STI Limited model there were fog lights in front and four exhaust tips in the rear; Xenon in place of halogen headlamps; a power glass sunroof; and the aluminum alloy spokes for the 18-inch wheels, otherwise wheels are 17-inch. WRX prices begin at $26,295 and end with the STI Limited’s $38,495, but options can raise that price. The navigation system and keyless entry, for example, on the tested STI Limited cost an additional $1,500. That option package replaced a six-speaker sound system with a nine-speaker, 440-watt, harmon-kardon

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper system. The audio system, whether with six or nine speakers, includes AM-FM-satellite radio, single compact disc player, auxiliary input jack, iPod capability, USB port and Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming, iTunes tagging and an auxiliary input jack.

Big tickets on the STI besides the engine, are the foot-tall spoiler; the 22-inch-wide-by-three-inch-tall hood scoop; 245 (10-inch wide) tires in place of 225s and 235s; wider fenders; stiffer subframe bushings; firmer suspension; heated front seats; and a high-cross flow design intercooler instead of an ordinary one. Seats are leather instead of fake suede.

On the interior, dark leather seats trimmed in red are eye-catchers.

Instrumentation highlights revolutions per minute to give the driver a reading on torque levels.

The sedan’s trunk measures 12 cubic feet, and it is lighted and carpeted.

When the split rear seats are folded flat allowing access to the trunk, additional

storage space is gained.

Amenities include power and heated exterior mirrors, power windows with express up and down for the driver, a power driver’s seat, cruise control, air conditioning, power door locks, intermittent wipers, cup holders, four grab handles, storage bins and map lights.

Although an all-wheel-drive car, Subaru lets owners tinker with the STI torque split between front and rear axles. The STI has three settings for drivers and, of course, one of them is Sport and another Sport Sharp. The third setting is Intelligent and this simply means economy or less gas and torque. The STI requires premium fuel.

Two negatives were noted from the outset, and they were noise and a stiff transmission.

Those familiar with the classic stick transmissions from German luxury car manufacturers will not be impressed with the six-speed manual in the WRX. Shift gates are difficult to find and the foot clutch is long. If the clutch is not depressed to touch the firewall, shifting will not occur. For 6-footers and taller with a longer leg, this may not be a problem, but it is not easy.

With practice, the shifting process becomes smoother, but it is nothing to exalt over.

For drivers and passengers familiar with a tightly wrapped vehicle, the WRX will be a disappointment. Noise from outside invades the cabin. During the test week, it was difficult for the driver to carry on a conversation with the person seated alongside in the passenger’s front seat. Virtually impossible unless the two people involved were yelling at each other instead of talking.

It was even more difficult to hear what was being said by occupants in the rear bench seat.

Although the rumble from the exhaust system was pleasant to the ear, noise from tires, engine and wind was discomfiting.

Components of an independent, four-wheel suspension system include double wishbones, struts, steel lower L-arms, coil springs and stabilizer bars front and rear.

Safety mechanicals include a four-wheel antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, brakeforce distribution and assist, seatbelts for five and seven airbags (front, sides in front, overhead both rows and one for the driver’s knee).

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

‘Hector and the Search for Happiness’ a film that is shrink wrapped in naiveté

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post What would it take to make you happy? To experience that emotion truly, deeply, utterly, “as a state of being,” as a character puts it in “Hector and the Search for Happiness”?

If your answer was more money, a new job, better sex or stronger drugs – or maybe reconnecting with your first love, the one who got away – you’re not unlike the film’s title character, a successful but vaguely unsatisfied man who suddenly chucks everything, including his beautiful, adoring girlfriend (played by Rosamund Pike), to go gallivanting around the world in search of something that – surprise! – turns out to have nothing to do with any of that stuff.

Based on a 2002 book by French shrink-turned-popnovelist François Lelord, “Hector” is as light as the

punch line from a “Peanuts” cartoon, despite a sequence in which our hero (Simon Pegg) is kidnapped and beaten by a violent African warlord (Akin Omotoso). Consider yourself warned: Although the trailer makes the movie look like a comedy, it’s less than a laugh riot.

After being released from that cheerful little interlude, Hector is shown skipping down the street as the words “Happiness is feeling completely alive” crawl across the screen. Hector, who carries a notebook everywhere he goes, keeps a running tally of various theories of happiness he has hit upon during his globetrotting “research,” each of which appears as a handwritten scribble on screen, as a way of closing out chapters of the film.

Much of it is about as profound as what you’d find printed on a greeting card,

and one theory is quite crass.

“Happiness could be the freedom to love more than one woman at the same time,” Hector writes, after spending a (chaste) night with a hot Chinese hooker (Ming Zhao), just before she is forcibly removed by her abusive pimp.

Hector’s other encounters include meeting a rich, cynical banker (Stellan Skarsgard); an old friend of Hector’s who has become an aid worker after coming out as gay (Barry Atsma); a ruthless drug lord (Jean Reno) with a mentally ill wife; a woman dying of cancer (Chantel Herman); and a wise old monk (Togo Igawa).

Just about everyone Hector runs into seems to have some sage advice or life lesson to offer. They’re straight out of Central Casting, not cinéma vérité. Where is the airplane seatmate with body odor and a boring story about a business meeting in Sacramento? Why

is everyone in this movie – except Hector – an enlightened being or a heartless thug?

As naive as the main character is – and he’s almost shockingly unsophisticated for someone who has been to medical school – the movie is even more clueless. There are many scenes where you can see the plot turns coming from a mile away.

There are no surprises here, only blandly reassuring homilies.

Spoiler alert: Happiness has to do with loving others and self-acceptance. If that’s something you have to fly to Shanghai to find out, save yourself the airfare and see this movie instead.

• “Hector and the Search for Happiness” received one-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains obscenity, violence, brief nudity and sensuality.

The film runs 114 minutes.

Good pair of glasses will correct most cases of astigmatism Dear Doctor K: At my last visit, my eye doctor told me I have astigmatism. He told me what that means, but I still don’t really understand what it is. Please explain it to me.

Dear Reader: Astigmatism means that the eye’s cornea has an irregular shape, which causes vision problems. Astigmatism is very common; I am among the several billion people who have it.

Fortunately, it’s easy to correct.

Let’s start with a little eye anatomy. The cornea is the clear, dome-like window at the front of the eye. Rays of light pass through the cornea and then through the lens, which focuses images onto the retina. The retina captures the images, then sends them to the brain via the optic nerve. (I’ve put an illustration of eye anatomy on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

The cornea is normally round.

In people with astigmatism, the cornea may be shaped like a football or oval. This causes light to scatter instead of focus on a single point as it passes through the cornea.

Blurred vision is the most common symptom of astigmatism.

Some people describe it as double vision but in only one eye. You may develop eyestrain, squinting and headaches from working to

Many people have some degree of astigmatism; in fact, it is rare to find a perfectly formed eye.

Though people are born with astigmatism, it is often not noticed until a child attends school or learns to read. Astigmatism tends to remain stable, but it may slowly worsen over time. An eye doctor can diagnose astigmatism using a standard eye examination.

Glasses are a good, reliable choice for correcting astigmatism.

Patients who prefer contact lenses may be limited to hard contact lenses. Soft lenses are sometimes an option, but they aren’t as effective for severe astigmatism.

Another option is corrective surgery. The most common type used to correct astigmatism is LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis).

In LASIK, the doctor makes a small incision on the surface of the eye to create a small flap of tissue, which is lifted up. Then the doctor uses a cool laser beam to correct the irregular shape of

the cornea. Recovery is usually quick and painless.

When LASIK surgery was introduced, I took a wait-and-see attitude. The surgery clearly produced short-term improvement in vision, with minimal risks.

But I was concerned about the possibility that over the longer term the surgery would become less effective, or there would be adverse effects. Today, after nearly 30 years of its use, I’m much more confident in recommending this procedure to my patients.

It’s the unusual person, though, who needs surgery to correct astigmatism. Glasses have always worked for me, as did contact lenses.

I think eyeglasses are one of the most important medical discoveries – right up there with antibiotics, X-rays and vaccines.

So many children and young adults begin to lose clear vision due to myopia, astigmatism and other common eye problems.

Without eyeglasses, society would be much less happy and productive.

Teen challenges drinking age Dr. Wallace: My 19-yearold sister just returned from spending six weeks in Germany to better learn how to read, write and speak the German language. She was in Munich, the Bavarian region of Germany, and she loved every minute of it.

One thing that surprised my sister was that she could visit a beer garden, order a bratwurst sandwich and wash it down with a stein of beer.

You see; the minimum age for consuming alcohol in Germany is 18. My sister said all the American students in this program sponsored by the university were under age 21, but over age 18, and most of them were drinking beer. She said that all of the students behaved themselves and none of them became intoxicated.

Why can’t the United States follow Germany in legalizing our minimum drinking age to 18? Eighteen-year-olds are considered adults in every other way.

Every so often I receive a letter such as yours promoting the theory that 18-yearolds are considered adults, but are denied the privilege of consuming an alcoholic beverage, but I’m never convinced that older teens can consume alcohol without consequence.

Germany has one of the highest percentages of teen deaths by automobile accidents in the Western world. The reason is perfectly clear: lax laws about teen drinking.

Even with our strict minimum-drinking-age laws, we have much the same problem in this country. The three

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace leading causes of death among teens are automobile accidents, homicide and suicide, according to Dr. S. Kenneth Schonberg, a professor of pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Nearly half of the teens who die in accidents are intoxicated themselves or are in a car driven by someone who is, Dr. Schonberg notes. This fact alone makes alcohol intoxication the leading cause of death among North American teens.

In addition, nearly one-third of teen murder victims are under the influence of alcohol at the time they are killed, Dr. Schonberg says.

Add to this the fact that 20 percent of teens who commit suicide are intoxicated at the time of their death, and one can plainly see that teen alcohol use is anything but consequence-free.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and never been on a date. I don’t really know why.

I’m not bad-looking and I’ve got a decent shape.

In yesterday’s column, we saw a deal in which a 4-4 fit was worse than a 6-3 because there was an inevitable trump loser in the 4-4 fit, but those losers could be discarded if it were a side suit.

Today’s deal is another example of one in which the unbalanced fit works better than the balanced, but it is hard to recognize at the table.

After South opens one spade and North raises to two spades, it is tempting for South to rebid three hearts. Perhaps North has raised with three spades and five (or six!) hearts. Here, North would surely raise to four hearts.

Whether South is in four spades or four hearts, West does best to lead his fourth-highest club, guaranteeing at least one honor in the suit (or a most unlikely singleton). East takes the trick as cheaply as possible and continues with his original fourth-highest club, which South ruffs. What happens after that?

In four spades, declarer continues with the diamond king.

West wins and plays a third club.

South ruffs, draws two rounds of trumps, cashes the diamond queen, ruffs the diamond three in the dummy, and plays on hearts. Declarer loses only one spade, one diamond and one club.

In four hearts, though, the continued club leads force declarer to ruff twice in his hand, which promotes West’s heart jack to a winner. The defenders take one trick in each suit for down one.
