GENEVA – Hometown girl Niykee Heaton, 19, arrived from the airport Wednesday to a cheering crowd of about 30 fans and well-wishers in front of the old courthouse on Third Street in Geneva.

Heaton released her Niykee Heaton debut EP, “Bad Intentions” yesterday on Steve Rifkind and Russell Simmons’ All Def Music in partnership with Capitol Records. It was third of the top 10 pop albums downloaded on iTunes, according to the PopVortex website.

Her mother, Veronica Heaton, arranged the stop in Geneva as Niykee was coming back from New York.

“You guys are so sweet,” a surprised Niykee said as some former classmates and others from Geneva High School cheered for her and hollered, “Bad Intentions.”

“This is really cool, and it’s crazy that everyone showed up to say hi to me,” Niykee said. “I didn’t know I had fans here.”

Former classmates Megan Albrecht, 18 and Bri Phillips, 17, both seniors, along with freshmen students Alissa Ross, Paige Engebretson, Emily Bourbeau and Kristin Briner, all 14, said they are all fans of Heaton and her music.

All were among those who turned out to greet Heaton.

“It’s very exciting,” Veronica said. “When she was a little girl, she said, ‘I think I’m going to sing for the whole world and feed all the children.’ ” She said her daughter will be able to use her music to change lives by promoting organ donation and help for underprivileged children in her mother’s native South Africa.

“There’s millions of people who live without running water,” Veronica said. “She is determined to make that better.”

Veronica said her daughter takes inspiration by her late older sister, Rachel Heaton, who beat liver cancer and survived a liver transplant and two kidney transplants. Rachel, a 2004 Geneva High School graduate, died in

2007 at age 21 while waiting for a second liver transplant.

Because of her strong academics at Geneva High School, Niykee got a full scholarship to the University of Virginia. Her stepfather Paul Cevk said she put the scholarship on hold to pursue her dream.

Veronica said her daughter would be home only about 48 hours.

“Her agent found her online in 2012 and thought she was spectacular,” Veronica said. “She traveled to New York with her agent, landed in Florida and is going all over Canada and the U.S. She writes all her own lyrics and has full creative rights.

She plays guitar and piano – but she can really play anything.”

The expo will reopen after lunch, and – at that time – the general business community is welcomed to attend the expo after 1 p.m. Admission is $35 for members of the six chambers of commerce and $50 for nonmembers. Registration is due by Friday.

LOW VISION, HIGHER EXPECTATIONS According to the latest data available from the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 2.9 million Americans are living with “low vision.”

This term is a catchall phrase for sight that cannot be corrected to (near-)normal with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Although it ranges from simply having blurry vision to more serious problems (such as double vision), the immediate consequences of low vision are an inability to perform daily activities such as reading a book or newspaper, crossing the street safely, or cooking a meal. While medicine or surgery does not offer a cure, there are some practical steps that can be taken to maximize remaining sight. These may involve magnifying devices, better lighting, or reading-assisting technology.

P.S. The number of Americans suffering from low vision is expected to increase 72 percent by 2030, when the last of the Baby Boomers turns 65.

Higher user fees to help county balance budget

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County officials have found a way to close the anticipated 2015 budget gap, but part of the solution will cost users of certain services more in fees.

Fiscal Choice Consulting recently conducted a user fee study for the county.

Its recommendations for the clerk, sheriff, adult corrections and recorder could generate about $712,000 in revenue for the general fund, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told the Finance and Budget Committee on Wednesday.

Onzick didn’t go into detail about the proposed fee changes, but he said they will be reviewed during next month’s committee meeting cycle. Examples of services that might be affected are copies of certified documents, such as birth, marriage and death certificates, he said.

Assuming the County Board approves the new fees,

the anticipated extra revenue would help reduce the budget gap for next year’s general fund. Furthermore, he said, enough savings have been realized to add about $60,000 to the contingency fund.

The gap initially totaled about $2 million but was narrowed to $800,000 last month.

The added user fees – along the reduction of an additional sheriff’s deputy and reductions to reflect the salaries and benefits of recent new hires – have balanced the budget, Onzick said.

The health insurance rate increase also was reduced from 9.5 percent to 6.2 percent, Onzick said.

He noted the committee was expected to discuss the contract for group health, dental and vision plans, but it was pulled form the agenda because it wasn’t ready.

Onzick said he will present the 2015 budget at the Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday. The County Board is expected to vote to put it on display Oct. 14, he said.

Geneva man pleads not guilty in murder case

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Geneva man indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his wife was arraigned on Wednesday.

S h a d wick King, 47, appeared in court but had Assistant Public Defender Brenda Will e t t e n t e r Shadwick King his plea for him during a brief hearing.

“We plead not guilty to each and every count,” Willett said on Wednesday to Judge James Hallock.

quest for a speedy trial continues, as well.

King’s jury trial is set to begin on Dec. 8 at the Kane County Judicial Center, 37W777 Route 38 in St. Charles Township. A final pretrial conference is scheduled for Dec. 4, Hallock said.

Before King was taken out of the courtroom, Hallock told him to follow Willett’s instructions and legal advice.

King was charged with two counts of first-degree murder after an investigation began into the death of his wife, Kathleen King, on July 6.

The full City Council will vote on the recommendation.

The action follows on the heels of Batavia businessman Joe Marconi recently filing a class-action lawsuit in Kane County Circuit Court over the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State

Energy Campus.

“We want a third party to look at what happened and tell us if we were misled,” 3rd Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit said. “The bottom line is I don’t think the city did anything wrong. I don’t think the city committed any fraud. I don’t think we have anything to hide.”

In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State. Geneva and Rochelle are other members. Chanzit was not on the City Coun-

cil when that decision was made.

Through its power sales agreement with NIMPA, Batavia is obligated to buy 45.8 percent, or about 55 megawatts of the power generated

by Prairie State. Geneva is obligated to buy 29.2 percent (35 megawatts) and Rochelle is obligated to buy 25 percent (30 megawatts).

However, Chanzit said he is not implying NIMPA did anything wrong.

“We want to make clear that we are still their partner,” he said.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns on Wednesday said

the city has no plans to ask for a similar investigation.

“Obviously our colleagues in Batavia have acted in a way they feel is best,” Burns said. “While Geneva is a partner in Prairie State, that’s where our similarities stop.”

Earlier this year, state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, asked Madigan to investigate Prairie State Energy Campus. Schmitz had said the letter reflected his concern regarding cost overruns on the $5 billion project and the impact on participating communities that might have to pass the cost along to ratepayers.

ST. CHARLES – A Cook County judge this month ruled St. Charles School District 303 does not have to pay an additional $374,000 in a lawsuit tied to the 2001 mold discovery at St. Charles East High School.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy denied a motion from the Illinois School District Agency, one of the district’s former insurance carriers, on Sept. 16, said Seth Chapman, District 303 assistant superintendent of business services.

The agency sought the $374,000 as pre-judgment interest in its lawsuit against the district. The interest would account for the additional legal costs associated with the lawsuit since it originally was filed in 2003, Chapman said.

The agency took the district to court to obtain the roughly $660,000 the district collected from its other previous insurance carriers. The agency argued it helped pay for costs associated with the mold remediation and was due the $660,000 instead of the district.

Kennedy on July 31 ruled in favor of the agency on the $660,000, but excluded the $374,000 pre-judgement interest in her decision. One of the agency’s attorneys filed the motion asking the judge to reconsider the interest, and that is the motion that was denied on Sept. 16, Chapman said.

“We still have to wait to find out if they are going to file an appeal,” he said.

The Illinois School District Agency has 30 days from Kennedy’s Sept. 16 decision to file the appeal. As of Tuesday afternoon, the district has not received any word that an appeal has been filed, Chapman said.

The St. Charles School District 303 Board on Aug. 11 voted, 7-0, in favor of paying the agency $660,000, plus current court fees and other interest that totaled $2,000, in accordance with Kennedy’s July 31 ruling. The $662,000 was paid on Aug. 14, Chapman said.

For both Cub and Girl Scouts, one of the most popular of Discovery Center programs is the “Night at the Museum,” a for-the-public event that quickly caught on with Scout troops. Scouts and their leaders actually stay overnight at the Discovery Center, participating in activities and programs prepared and presented by nature programs staff.

“We’ve had such high demand for this that it’s now being offered as a regular Scout program,” Kulinski said.

Although programming is aimed at the beginning tiers for both Cub and Girl Scouts, older Scouts can take advantage of the unique park district facilities to help them meet the requirements for their specific age level. Is your child a Daisy or a Wolf? A Brownie or a Bear?

Notice the use of initial capital letters. We’re not talking about personality traits or favorite colors here. These are just four of the six age-related levels assigned to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, organizations that have been around for more than 100 years.

As relevant today as they were when they were founded in 1910 and 1912, respectively, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America start their youngest participants off as early as kindergarten in programs that teach practical skills and develop personal habits that will have immeasurable value in the years ahead.

Beginning Boy Scouts, known as Cub Scouts, can start as Tiger Cubs at age 7, or first grade, and then progress to Wolf Cubs in second grade, Bear Cubs in third grade, and Webelos in fourth and fifth grades. Girl Scouts similarly begin at the Daisy level in kindergarten and first grade, then

move on to Brownies in grades two and three, and Juniors in grades four and five.

Along the way, both boys and girls work toward definable goals in diverse areas of expertise. Cub Scouts earn merit badges, while Girl Scouts complete leadership Journeys.

Both endeavors impart knowledge and provide a broad range of activities designed to help them understand and participate in life experiences as they mature. To help accomplish these goals, local Scout troops participate in programs offered by both Primrose Farm Park and Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. Staff at each facility work to offer educational content that will satisfy Scouting requirements and create entertaining experiences that will stimulate a child’s interests and creativity.

At Primrose Farm Park, the main objective is to structure the Cub Scout and Girl Scout programs to closely coordinate with the badge and Journey objectives of each group, said farm manager Kirk Bunke.

BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members on Tuesday decided the district will ask for two synthetic turf fields at Batavia High School as part of a $15 million referendum question in November to fund capital improvements throughout the district.

The Batavia School Board in August voted to place the question on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. Voting “no” were board members Jon Gaspar and Jason Stoops.

The project would install a synthetic turf field at Bulldog Stadium and add a second multi-use synthetic turf field. The majority of the school board members agreed with a staff recommendation that the project would bring the most students back onto the high school campus for af-

ter-school outdoor activities.

“I would like to see the kids back on campus,” Sue Locke said. “I think it is a danger to have all the kids at different facilities.”

The plan, however, eliminates bleacher improvements at Bulldog Stadium, which concerned board member Tina Bleakley.

“They’re crowded,” Bleakley said. “They’re getting run down.”

The project carries an estimated $7.6 million price tag, including $4.7 million for the multi-use synthetic field.

Another option, which would include bleacher improvements, was estimated to cost about $7 million.

The plan will be presented at a public information meeting on the referendum from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 14 at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St. If approved, the district would issue up to $15 million

St. Charles Township yard in compliance; ticket to be dismissed 9 ST. CHARLES TOWN SHIP – A St. Charles Township homeowner cited this month with having an overgrown residential yard is now in compliance, Kane County officials said.

“He did what we needed him to do,” Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler said.

He indicated the ticket against David M. Robbins, 43, will be dismissed.

The deputy who issued the citation reported the yard contained noxious weeds,

“I’m an avid proponent of protecting the white-tailed deer. This is a sanctuary for them.”

David M. Robbins St. Charles Township homeowner downed trees and overgrown grass that hadn’t appeared to be cut this season.

Robbins, who describes himself as a naturalist and a tree-hugger, said he hasn’t received a complaint about his property in the 10 years he’s lived in the township. To him, he said, a downed tree is art, and the overgrown lawn

was unintentional.

“I had no idea that the lawn maintenance guy didn’t cut it for a couple of weeks,” Robbins said.

Mark VanKerkhoff, the county’s development and community services director, said the rules about property maintenance are online – visit www.countyofkane.

org and click on the “County Code” tab.

They generally focus on grass length, weeds and other items that relate with the exterior of the property, he said.

The county’s goal is to move homeowners toward compliance, he said.

Robbins had his front yard mowed, VanKerkhoff said.

The county considers him to be in compliance based on that and Robbins’ assertion that his backyard is a deer habitat – a claim the county is looking into, VanKerkhoff said.

Robbins said a “conservation easement” is on the backside of his property. He said that means nobody can build on it, and it can develop naturally.

“I’m an avid proponent of protecting the white-tailed deer,” Robbins said, noting he is a member of the Quality Deer Management Association. “This is a sanctuary for them.”

VanKerkhoff said it would be premature to say what condition Robbins’ backyard could be in if his assertion about the conservation easement is true.

After a closed session, Batavia School Board members unanimously directed Batavia School Superintendent Lisa Hichens to execute a lease agreement for 804 Main St., Batavia, pending final document approval from school district attorneys.

The building is owned by former board president Ron Link, who did not run for re-election after a term that ended in 2013.

In doing so, board members defended the proposed lease, which has been criticized by some residents because of Link’s ties to the district.

“We have been forthright from the very beginning with this,” said board member Gregg Hodge. “We have done our due diligence.”

The district wants to lease the building to replace Batavia High School’s aging maintenance building.

During a health and life-safety inspection of the 48-year-old maintenance shop in September 2013, Bat-

avia School District 101 was cited for a number of violations and was told that immediate corrections needed to be made, including the installation of a sprinkler and fire alarm system, and to cover the foam insulation installed on the underside of the roof deck.

Those repairs are estimated to cost $130,000. Brown had told school board members the current maintenance building poses a risk to staff, and the district needs to make improvements in that space or shut it down.

As proposed, the district would lease Link’s building for $12,000 a month, with the intention of owning it in 10 years, said Pat Browne, the district’s director of buildings and grounds.

Browne said the district looked at several properties, but that Link’s building was the best suited for the district. He said the current maintenance building is at the end of its useful life expectancy. According to the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, the expected service life of that building is 51.6 years.

Browne said it would cost about $400,000 to remodel the building for the district’s needs.

“Right now, it is an empty warehouse,” he said.

A St. Charles man charged with conspiracy to commit extortion and three counts of attempted extortion had his case severed from four co-defendants for a separate trial, according to federal court records.

Mark Dziuban, 52, was indicted last year along with four other defendants in a federal criminal case involving allegedly collecting debts through the use of intimidation, fear and, in one instance, physical violence, according to court records.

Dziuban pleaded not guilty, records show, and his next court date is Oct. 30 for a status hearing in U.S. District Court for the Northern District in Chicago. His case was separated from the others for medical reasons, court records show.

Also pleading not guilty were Paul Carparelli, 44, of Itasca and Patrick White, 46, of Aurora. Their trial is scheduled to start next week, records show.

George Brown, 51, and Vito Iozzo, 43, both of Lombard, pleaded guilty to one

county of conspiracy to commit extortion.

Theirs were among three separate indictments involving nine people on one or more counts of attempted extortion, the use or threat of violence to collect debts, records show.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, officials said, but prosecutors can seek reduced sentences in exchange for defendants’ cooperation.

According to the criminal complaint, the conspiracy extended from spring to November 2010 to extort repayment of business debts owed by three companies. Travel in furtherance of the conspiracy largely had financed by Dziuban and one of the companies, according to court records.

“Dziuban asked Brown and Iozzo to help him with a collection in Wisconsin, and he engaged Brown and Iozzo to help him to collect a debt from a company in New Jersey,” according to court papers filed Aug. 25. “Dziuban flew Brown and Iozzo to Wisconsin to confront the [company] owner.”

Sincerely yours They say that the last twotenths miles of the marathon are the hardest, and if my time as a columnist is a race, I would definitely agree.

These last few weeks, it’s been a little harder to carve out time just for writing between my collective college stuff. This, my final column, has been particularly hard.

I had a hard time choosing the angle for which I should come from.

I first thought about writing a formal thank-you note, like one I would send to a teacher. I envisioned thanking my editor, Kathy Gresey, for all her support, help editing and generous flexibility in deadlines. She gave me the opportunity to write this column, after all.

Although, she’s the first one to read my final draft, I knew it wouldn’t be as interesting for the general audience.

To cater to the “masses” of my readership, my next idea was to go thank-you note style. Similar to thanking relatives for a gift, I was planning to express my gratitude for everyone who reads my column every week.

I’m pretty sure that most of you are parents of friends, so you’re basically like aunts and uncles to me. Somehow, I couldn’t stretch that out to the appropriate length, so that went to the back burner.

I wish I could thank everyone in person and give you all a big hug. Especially my parents, who I miss seeing every day. They have been there for me since before day one, helping me read columns out loud, giving me ideas (even when I don’t need them) and reminding me to turn in my column on Thursdays. Unfortunately, I don’t have any way to get to St. Charles by myself, and I have classes that I have to go to. They know they’ll get their hug soon.

LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman a timeline with every month I wrote for the Kane County Chronicle. About the first six would be me being various levels of stressed about college, with the second half cherishing the relief I have felt since making my final decision. My future timeline is pretty exciting – on top of being busy with classes, I was hired as a supplements writer for the Illinois State University school newspaper, The Vidette. While the writing style I’ll have to use is a lot different from one of an opinion’s column, I’m so excited to try something new. I know my new position will lead to many more opportunities.

As I’ve written about, the path to figuring it out certainly wasn’t easy. I’m grateful that I had my column to document this crazy and defining year. I’ve never been good at journaling, so I think of this as a sort of an open diary.

I also thought I’d write a faux acceptance speech, but then I realized that’s exactly what I did for my first column.

Writing this column has been unlike anything I’ve ever done before so it’s very fitting that its goodbye is unique too. I guess the best way to sendoff a column is write one.

It’s time for me to pass the torch to the next high school columnist(s) – good luck and may the words be ever in your favor.

OUR KIDS NEED HEALTHY FOODS To the Editor: School days are upon the parents of the Fox Valley once again, and hectic schedules and hurried meals admittedly become standard for many of us.

Adjusting to new schedules can take time, and, often, important things like eating healthy can fall to the wayside – that McDonald’s cheeseburger is just so cheap and convenient and yummy.

Summer habits die hard, but plain and simple, our kids NEED healthy foods throughout their day, both at school and at home.

Did you know that children with healthy diets perform better in school than those with unhealthy diets? True story – it was reported in a study published by the Journal of School Health.

Both kids (and adults, too) don’t just perform better, but FEEL better when health-conscious decisions are made. Starting them off in the morning with a balanced breakfast is key to getting the day kicked off on the right foot.

Avoid the temptations of packing candy bags and Fritos by keeping them out of the house altogether.

Make time for planned family dinners. Almost any meal prepared from scratch at home is healthier than processed frozen food or takeout. Hungry for pizza? Use low-fat cheese and a whole-wheat crust. Craving chicken? Grab a rotisserie. Don’t forget – any vegetable tastes

delicious when it’s sautéed in a bit of olive oil and garlic, or thrown on the grill.

Often, it’s a miracle just to get my daughter, Raine, showered, dressed, teeth brushed, backpack packed and out of the door on time every morning. I get the struggles of “back-to-school life.” But, I also get the concept of feeding your family well, and how important it is to the growth, development and learning process of our children. Start making changes now, however gradual they need to be, and set the scene for the rest of the school year, and in turn the rest of their lives. After all, college is just around the corner ... .

sexually assaulting child in his family KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A former St. Charles man faces a long prison sentence after he was convicted Tuesday of sexually assaulting a child in his family.

Kane County Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles convicted Ramiro Fonseca Jr., 43, formerly of the 400 block of North Union Street, Ramiro St. Charles, of Fonseca Jr. two counts of criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual abuse, all felonies.

Fonseca faces a sentence of between 11 and 37 years in prison.

Fonseca also had lived in the 500 block of North Gay Street, Pharr, Texas.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that between July 2009 and February 2011, Fonseca committed multiple acts of sexual penetration with the female victim, who was younger than

After Fonseca moved to Texas, the victim told a counselor about the abuse, who then reported the information to the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services, as required by law.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Lori Schmidt and Andrew Whitfield, who are assigned to the Kane County Child Advocacy Center, which investigated the case.

Boles set Fonseca’s next court appearance for Nov. 19, for motions and sentencing.

In addition to the prison

term, Fonseca must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act. Fonseca remains in the Kane County Jail, where he had been held on $500,000 bond since his extradition from Texas. Bond was revoked after the conviction, officials said.

Art, fashion join in Water Street Studios’ fundraiser Event to take place Saturday in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Those who attend Water Street Studios’ third annual on-som’ bel fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 27, will see how fashion and art interact.

The theme of this year’s show is “Avenue + Passage.” The show will be at 7 p.m. at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St., in downtown Batavia.

Tickets are $85 a person, and a limited number of VIP tickets are available for $125 a person, which includes reserved front row seating and champagne service.

Tickets are also available for $25 for a post-show DJ dance party and access to view the exhibited artwork and runway garments. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Water Street Studios at 630-761-9977 or online at www. waterstreetstudios.com/onsombel.

Last year’s show raised approximately $16,000 for the nonprofit Water Street Studios and its programs.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Water Street Studios Board member and event chairperson Laura Spicer about the show.

Eric Schelkopf: This is the third year of the event. What was the idea of doing a fashion show for a fundraiser?

Laura Spicer: At a certain level, fashion is considered another medium of artwork. And at the level that we are showing, it’s at the experimental level.

So, we’re referring to the fashion show as an experimental runway show.

It’s a way to provide a spectacle of an experience for our guests at the event.

It’s a cross-disciplinary form of artwork. It will feature 16 artists and designers, and 20 models on the runway.

The proceeds support all of our programming, which includes educational classes for the public and outreach programs to reach underserved youth in the community.

Schelkopf: What’s the idea behind this year’s theme?

Spicer: Last year, we had a very concrete theme, and it was called “The Chair and What You Wear.” It was meant to celebrate the chair as an icon of design.

This year, we wanted to go with something that was more intangible, but reflected our growth as an organization. We’re about to celebrate five years as an organization with our anniversary show on Nov. 14.

This whole event is a bigger spectacle than last year, just in terms of what we’ve taken on for the whole evening.

We will have a silent and live auction this year, whereas last year was our first live auction.

We have also added a $25 ticket level for the DJ dance party that will take place after the runway show and auction end. So that will be a 10 p.m. late night entry for people who just want to come and enjoy the music and see the art that was shown.

It’s a way for a person with a limited budget to still feel like they are contributing to the organization, and also get some enjoyment out of it by coming to the dance party and having a great evening.

Schelkopf: For people who are attending the show for the first time, what should they expect?

Spicer: I would say that it’s an event unlike anything you would typically find in the suburbs. It is a spectacle of the arts, because it represents so many various disciplines of the arts.

There’s also a gallery exhibition in the main gallery, curated by Water Street Studios’ resident artist Rita Grendze. She also is a very well-respected artist in the community.

Marilee Stach, a reference librarian at Waubonsee Community College’s Todd Library in Sugar Grove, said that Banned Books Week also provides an opportunity to “reinforce the concepts of First Amendment freedoms,” such as the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press.

“We’re at a college and we get a lot of students from a lot of different backgrounds, and I think it’s really important to show them that there can be opposing viewpoints, [and] people can still be tolerant and respectful of other views,” Stach said. “[Students] can get exposed to things that they might not agree with, and – maybe – people in the past have told them not to read, but find that they can still read it and

maybe not like it or agree with it but still talk about it.”

To celebrate the weeklong event, the Todd Library, as well as Geneva Public Library and Batavia Public Library, have created displays featuring challenged books, such as Sherman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” and classics by novelists, such

as Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Mark Twain.

The Todd Library also will be handing out promotional items, such as buttons and bookmarks that give information about the locations books have been banned and for what reasons.

The “Harry Potter” series, “A Wrinkle in Time” and “The Scarlet Letter” are among the many titles depicted on a poster hanging in the back of high school English teacher Rick Holinger’s classroom. The poster displays the covers of books that have been banned over the course of history, often leaving Marmion Academy students puzzled as to why they were banished in the first place.

“People ban books to exterminate ideas they imagine [to be] a threat to their values,” Holinger wrote in an email, while also referencing the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” – an American slave’s memoir – to cement his point.

“Frederick Douglass, when a slave, was forbidden to read because reading would – and did – deliver the concept of freedom. By the time [Douglass] was a teenager, he’d read enough pirated writing to decide he’d rather die trying to escape slavery than live as a slave.”

As long as there are books being banned, “their status needs to be foregrounded, and the reasons why explored,” Holinger, also a columnist for the Kane County Chronicle, added.

Every year, educators, librarians, writers and readers join together to do just that.

Since 1982, Banned Books Week, which runs through Saturday, Sept. 27, has reminded Americans about the importance of preventing censorship and of their fundamental freedom to read, said American Library Association President Courtney Young in a news release.

“Banned Books Week is one week of the year that the American Library Association has designated [when] librarians and readers can raise awareness of the fact that books are still being banned and challenged throughout America,” said Stacey Peterson, the adult

The focus of this year’s Banned Books Week is graphic novels, two of which were represented among the 28 titles mentioned on ALA’s bibliography of books challenged, restricted, removed or banned as reported in the Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom from May 2013 to March 2014.

“Captain Underpants” (series), a graphic novel by Dav Pilkey, came in at No. 1 on the ALA’s “Top 10 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2013,” for violence and offensive language, and was deemed unsuited for its intended age group.

The other graphic novel cited in the newsletter was “The Dark Knight Rises: I Am Bane,” a 24-page picture book by Lucy Rosen. “I Am Bane” made the list because of a challenge that took place at the Geneva Public Library, but the book was retained despite concerns that the images were “too scary” for young readers.

Dining in a Geneva gem for breakfast GENEVA – One of life’s simple pleasures comes in the form of the American diner.

Being able to relish in the round-the-clock service of pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast and bottomless coffee while reading a newspaper or chatting with a friend is one of those moments worth savoring.

Geneva Diner is the perfect place for just that.

Large windows allow for beams of sunlight to trickle in, and the slender, intimate dining room is fit with a breakfast bar that runs the length of one of the eating areas. We plopped into a cozy booth on a Friday morning alongside dining couples, a family and singles fueling up for the final day of the work week. Two waitresses circulated the dining room with coffee pots, while intermittently clearing tables, dropping off food and taking orders.

Our waitress filled our coffee cups, and once she started pouring we never saw their bottoms throughout the rest of the meal.

The breakfast menu is varied and inexpensive. Breakfast sandwiches, such as the Egg and Cheese Croissant, are popular and comparable in price to any drive-thru.

After asking for recommendations for breakfast, we settled on the Santa Fe Omelette ($6.95) and added chicken to it at an added 95 cents. We ordered a side of cheese grits ($2.50), the California Benedict ($7.15) and the Cinnamon Walnut French Toast ($6.50).

Attentive, friendly service combated the fact that ticket times were slightly slower than expected, but once the hot food came out – and all at once – everything was wellworth the wait.

North cross country standout moves forward after loss of big sister

C

arter Stibgen has an open invitation from his mother to talk out his feelings.

As are many teenagers, Stibgen is reluctant to take his mom up on the offer.

Stibgen, one of St. Charles North’s top cross country runners, remains quietly heavy-hearted about the loss of his older sister, Paige, from acute myeloid leukemia in November 2007, but also derives inspiration from Paige’s life.

If Paige had to fight through the ravaging effects of her 14-month illness, Stibgen figures there are no hardships in cross country or school that should prompt self-pity.

“I think the running is very symbolic of how he lives his life, too,” said his mother, Joanna Meyers. “Just putting one foot in front of the other, and just go.

You just do it. There’s no thinking about it, there’s no figuring it out, you just get up every morning and just do it. He has such a strong connection with his team, and I think that’s been a huge help, too.”

Carter Stibgen and Paige Stibgen were two years apart and shared a tight, sibling bond. Paige Stibgen was in fifth grade when she was diagnosed and had started sixth-grade at Haines Middle School before succumbing to leukemia at age 11.

The reminders of Stibgen’s big sister are frequent, both at home, where his family makes regular use of a blanket with a photo collage of Paige, and at school – especially last year, when Paige’s former classmates were seniors at North.

“I saw them a lot and talked to them

and whenever I saw them, I’d think ‘Paige could have been here, as a senior right now, graduating,’ ” Stibgen said.

Now Stibgen, a North junior, isn’t far from that milestone himself. In the meantime, he is poised to make his mark on North’s cross country program. Also a track athlete at North, Stibgen found his strongest niche in cross country, where he has been among North’s top two runners each meet this fall.

“It’s a unique sport because people are always like ‘Why do you do it, that’s a horrible sport?’ ” said Stibgen, who has three younger siblings ranging in age from 1 to 4. “You have no answer, you’re just like, ‘I like running, I like doing it.’

It’s the same thing every day but it’s just something that you like to do.”

Stibgen’s sophomore season was marred by a stress fracture but behind an aggressive, fast-starting approach, he’s developed into a team leader this year. He ran 16:04 during a recent meet in Peoria and wants to see his time dip to 15:30 by season’s end.

“You average 6,000 fans in [Class-A] ball. You can’t get that everywhere,” Bell said. “For our players to play in front of that many fans, there’s added pressure. There really is. You get a lot out of that atmosphere in terms of development. You really do.”

Agreeing to a two-year player development contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday capped one whirlwind stretch for the Cougars while beginning another.

Or maybe everything in what could go down as the busiest offseason in club history is intertwined.

“We don’t have time to exhale,” Cougars owner Bob Froehlich said.

“We’ve got the biggest capital improvement program probably in the last 10 Mike years, and we’ve Bell got a lot of other things to work on. We’re going to exhale at the end of next year when we win back-to-back championships.”

The 2015 Midwest League opener – set for April 9 against Cedar Rapids – undoubtedly will look vastly different than anything club brass imagined even 10 days ago.

Since Sept. 13, the Cougars have won the MWL title as a Class-A Cubs affiliate, seen the Cubs leave for a new PDC with South Bend, then entertained suitors from Arizona and Oakland for Kane County’s 25th anniversary season and beyond.

The Athletics, the Cougars’ parent club from 2003 to 2010, renewed with Beloit earlier Wednesday morning, paving the way for the Cougars to confirm their new Arizona ties.

The Diamondbacks are the sixth parent team in franchise history.

“I know we’ve got our work cut out for us. I know there’s a lot of Cubs fans in that area,” Diamondbacks farm director Mike Bell said. “But if we work hard and like the rest of our teams do, I think we can win some fans over.”

Bell and Diamondbacks special assistant Bob Gephard visited Froehlich and Cougars general manager Curtis Haug at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for several hours Friday.

Much of the meeting was spent touring the facilities and getting a pulse on what the Cougars had planned for their offseason capital improvement, a project that includes an expanded hitting cage, weight room and video room. Between those interactions and the emails Froehlich exchanged with Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall, a natural camaraderie developed.

Froehlich lauded Hall’s commitment to fans and affordability, and found his vision dovetailed with the Cougars’ views, especially in light of the coming renovations.

“They’re just installing more financial focus and financial stability, and just good, solid financial planning,” said Froehlich, a noted personality in the economic field. “As a result of that, I think it shows up in what a good bottom line is.”

The Cougars have proven their brand worth since the franchise relocated from Wausau, Wisconsin, before the 1991 season. In 2013, they became the first Class-A franchise to attract 10 million fans, and have drawn at least 400,000 in 20 of the past 21 seasons.

Oakland enjoyed the perks of the fan base for nearly a decade, and its familiarity with the Cougars’ front office prompted merely an hourlong conference call Monday instead of an in-person meeting.

Noting that both Arizona and Oakland were “first-class organizations,” Haug described the Diamondbacks’ shared philosophies as the biggest key.

“It seems like it’s going to be a partnership as opposed to an affiliation,” he said, “which is nice.”

Arizona, meanwhile, transitions from the only Class-A affiliation it has known, having aligned with South Bend in 1997. Bell said “there’s zero hard feelings” between the Diamondbacks organization and South Bend, which is expected to rename itself the South Bend Cubs during a news conference today.

He’s not afraid of much. He’ll just go, go, go.”

Paige Stibgen also was ambitious. Meyers described her as bossy and sassy but “with a sweet edge about it,” highly protective of Carter and a lover of animals who wanted to become a veterinarian.

Meyers said that Paige “talk-

ed us into buying all kinds of pets that I would have never had otherwise.”

Paige spent much of her final year at Children’s Hospital, but once her cancer relapsed after her fourth round of chemotherapy, she returned to Haines.

“She went to outdoor ed [in Wisconsin] and did the zip line and tried to participate as much as she could,” Meyers said. “The feedback I’d get is her drive to keep going and just keep achieving during that time knowing that she was dying. She would still want to work with the tutor and finish her AP math classes. Former St. Charles East student Anna Daley died of acute myeloid leukemia in 2012 – Meyers and Daley’s mother, Lisa, remain close – and Daley’s illness galvanized fundraising and bone marrow match support in the St. Charles area. Meyers has sought to further that momentum in the St. Charles North community, especially in September, pediatric cancer awareness month.

St. Charles North’s girls volleyball team wore gold socks in recognition of the month at a recent match, and Meyers said the cross country, football and cheerleading teams also have expressed interest in spreading awareness.

On Sunday, Meyers participated in the 20-mile run at the Fox Valley Marathon on a team supporting Cal’s Angels.

She figured the gesture would resonate with both Paige and Carter, who ran the last mile with his mom.

“I do the charity part of it to make Paige proud, but I do the running part of it to hopefully make Carter proud,” Meyers said. “I’ll never be fast, but I can finish.”

St. Charles alums team up for UW-Whitewater soccer

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber Both players are enjoying each other’s presence, saying it’s made their respective moves easier. Lucatorto said he’s been learning from Stanko since he was 13 or 14 years old and that he’s still learning from him how to adapt to the college game.

“Maturity of the game, just how much it’s evolved since high school,” he said on what Stanko is teaching him.

“Having him here has made it so much easier,” Stanko said of what Lucatorto’s provided him.

“I was able to hang out with him right away. We connected very well, so it made the transition so much easier.”

Both St. Charles natives are thrilled with their new team. Stanko is off to a great start after switching from defense to forward. He’s the team leader in goals, shots and shots on goal. Lucatorto, meanwhile, has a win and nine saves in three games played as goalkeeper.

But the thing they’re most excited about is their teammates. Both Stanko and Lucatorto are adjusting to life with a new set of teammates after last season, but they don’t think it could be going any better.

“They’re just my new family,” Lucatorto said.

“Everybody gets along great.

Team chemistry is just unbreakable.”

“So far, it’s perfect, it’s great,” said Stanko, also a basketball player. “I did transfer from D-I to D-III, which was not what I was expecting. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to play D-I soccer. But I want to say this was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Justin Stanko and Chris Lucatorto are both going through the challenges of joining new teams.

But one challenge is a little unique: Putting old rivalries behind them.

Stanko, a St. Charles North alumnus, and Lucatorto, a St. Charles East product, are both first-year members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s soccer team. Stanko transferred in from Division I Loyola, while Lucatorto is a freshman. That means a North Star and a Saint on the same roster. But don’t worry – the rivalry has been easy to get past for these two friends.

“It’s actually very different. He did go to East, so playing with him is different,” Stanko said. “It used to be the other way around, where I’m shooting on him and trying to score on him, but now we’re teammates. Ever since I met him, we’ve been really close.

It’s different, but it’s also great playing with him.”

The two knew each other before their fortuitous team-up with the Warhawks, playing as teammates on the Strikers Fox Valley club team during their high school days. But both going to the same college?

That wasn’t planned. In fact, their decisions which college to attend were made independent of one another. When he settled on Whitewater after transferring from Loyola, Stanko had to be reminded by a coach that Lucatorto was on the team.

“It was actually a surprise,” Stanko said. “I was also looking at Eastern Illinois. I was looking there, and Mike Novotny went there. That was my keeper for club. And I was looking here, and it was weird because I had two East goalies, the two schools I was looking at had two East goalies going there.

I chose Whitewater, and then like the day after coach was like, ‘You know Chris Lucatorto’s going here.’ I heard about it awhile ago, but I totally forgot. I was like, ‘Oh yeah!’ So I contacted him, and we talked. And that’s how I found out.”

The Saints lost in straight sets, 25-19, 26-24, in a hardfought match that saw East (14-4) lead for most of the second set before falling short.

Playing without outside hitter Kyla Augustine, who did not travel with the team to the game, coach Jennie Kull had to make the adjustments with placement but was pleased with the team’s effort and didn’t allow room for excuses.

“At this point, we have lots of different people, so that’s no excuse that we were down one tonight,” Kull said. “I’m very pleased. Obviously, there are some things that we need to improve on, but I saw some things that I haven’t seen before that I’m really pleased

with. The drive, we’ve been working on the start and played well to finish and I think they played well today.”

East redoubled its efforts after dropping the first set and held a slim lead for most of the second until a pair of errors put Benet up, 22-21.

The Saints tied it on the next point with a kill from outside hitter Meagan Smith before a dispute arose on the next play.

After a long rally, Benet middle hitter Rachael Fara launched a spike toward the back line, causing both sides to celebrate.

The officials ruled the point be replayed, which Kull clearly disagreed with, although she credited her side’s determination after the ruling.

“It was out,” Kull said. “But that’s part of being home. It is what it is. I saw heart from our kids that I’ve never seen and I’m really proud of that.”

The Redwings would take advantage of the call to win the next point and take the match

Benet (16-0) played its second match in as many days after defeating Joliet Catholic on Tuesday.

Coach Brad Baker said his side made the adjustments after trailing for most of the second set and began to figure out East’s game plan, enabling Benet to pull out the win.

“Momentumwise, we were just able to win a couple long rallies there that I thought just kept the momentum going,” Baker said. “We kind of understood what they wanted to do servingwise and figured it out a little more and were able to stop them. We just played a little better.”

In the first set, the Saints led early but never regained the lead after Benet went up, 4-3, eventually pulling away for the 25-19 win in the nonconference match.

Fara had five of her team-leading 11 kills in the first set and said that the

Mosquera and Avery Macklin played out of position because of Augustine’s absence and provided a force at the net, with both drawing praise from Kull.

Despite the loss, East gained valuable experience playing against a top team that Macklin hopes will be useful later in the season.

“I feel like we can build off this,” Macklin said. “We all worked really hard and played together. It prepares us for when it really matters in the postseason.”

Defensive specialist Caroline McKeighan credited East’s energy in the match as

a rallying point moving forward.

“As a team we came together,” McKeighan said. “Everybody was fighting so hard to just get points and points. Everybody’s effort was amazing, everyone stayed together. We can use the energy we pulled off of it, if we’re up against a good team like this again. We can take the positive energy and know that every point matters.”

East will have a few days to make adjustments before traveling Monday to Downers Grove South.

Benet will take on St. Charles North on Friday, with Fara optimistic for another good match after being tested against East.

“St. Charles East is a fantastic program,” Fara said.

“They have a history with us, and we always push each other; it’s great. We clearly still have the same expectations that we’ve had in previous years, but we have to go hard the entire way.”

Matt Forte gets a B- for his second off night in a row, because most of it was not his fault. Whether the Bears can’t block it or coach Marc Trestman needs to call it more often, the Bears’ running game is stuck in the mud.

Forte struggled because the holes weren’t there, but his effort was, and he did make a few nice plays in the passing game.

The receivers also get a B-.

Brandon Marshall had his first off game as a member of the Bears. Maybe it was his nagging ankle or the weight of his offthe-field distractions, but one bad game out of 35 isn’t bad.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Alshon Jeffery picked him up, for the most part, and at this stage of his career Santonio Holmes is strictly a No. 3, a role he was just average in against the Jets.

Martellus Bennett and Dante Rosario lifted the tight ends out of the C- range and into the low B’s, but this group has to start blocking better in addition to catching the ball.

The offensive line gets a C+.

Jermon Bushrod and Jordan Mills both struggled with outstanding five-technique defensive ends, and Michael Ola took a step backward after a nice first start against the 49ers.

Kyle Long continues to play well, and Brian de la Puente had a nice night handling one of the

game’s best zero techniques in Damon Harrison.

The defensive line gets a B-/ C+. Stephen Paea was the best Bear on the field for stretches of the game, repeatedly collapsing the pocket up the middle, but he struggled at times against the run.

Lamarr Houston also brought nice pressure at times but missed plays against the run, while Jared Allen and Will Sutton were stout against the run but brought little pressure.

The Bears’ three sacks of Geno Smith were misleading, as they failed to bring any pressure for a good part of the game.

The linebackers also receive a B-. Jon Bostic, while not special, was definitely an upgrade over Shea McClellin at the Mike, and D.J. Williams had his best game of the season.

Unfortunately, it is time to start worrying about Lance Briggs. While the TV com-

mentators droned on and on about his leadership, it is clear through three weeks that he is missing plays he used to make routinely against the run and in coverage.

The secondary gets an A for effort, courage and, as I said, making plays.

Kyle Fuller was outstanding, and Tim Jennings played well, too. Chris Conte, Ryan Mundy and Danny McCray actually all struggled before getting hurt, and Isaiah Frey had a bad night at the nickel.

But, with the game on the line late in the fourth quarter, it was Fuller, Jennings, Brock Vereen, even Ahmad Dixon, making plays, and sealing a victory that easily could have gotten away.

McClellin ruled out for Sunday’s game against Packers

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears generally have been waiting until the last minute to rule players out publicly, but coach Marc Trestman said Wednesday that linebacker Shea McClellin will not play Sunday against the Packers.

McClellin injured his hand in practice last week and missed the Jets game Monday. In Week

10 last season, he had three sacks in Green Bay and was named the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week. Jon Bostic started for McClellin against the Jets and will continue to do so from the strongside linebacker position.

The Bears did not practice Wednesday after Monday night’s game. Instead, they had a 90-minute closed walkthrough but still had to release a hypothetical injury report.

The Bears definitely deserve to be 2-1.

They have absolutely had a little bit of luck – or maybe a lot – but show me a winning team that hasn’t.

The Bears’ passing game can run with any team in the NFL, and the defense, while still suspect, has shown some improvement each week.

But the purpose of this exercise each week, a thorough review of the tape of the Bears’ most recent game, is to learn how each unit is playing and which individuals are playing well and who isn’t.

The tape of the Bears’ 27-19 victory over the Jets on Monday night reveals there is still a lot of work to do if the Bears are going to be in the playoffs, and win playoff games.

Jay Cutler was a solid B against the Jets. He wasn’t as mechanically sound or accurate as he was in San Francisco, and

‘The Notebook’: More strange than startling

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post As with “The Tin Drum,” Volker Schlöndorff’s surreally allegorical 1979 film based on Günter Grass’s book about a strangely ageless German boy, it’s hard to interpret the events depicted in “The Notebook” – another book making the leap to the big screen – as anything other than metaphors. But for what, it’s not entirely clear. This adaptation of Agota Kristof’s 1986 novel is impossible to take literally, yet too obscure to read between the lines.

On the most superficial level, the film shows how war hardens the human heart.

Set in Hungary during the final months of World War II, “The Notebook” centers around twin boys (played by real-life brothers András and László Gyémánt) who become twisted into sociopaths by their experience of brutality.

After being left by their moth-

er (Gyöngyvér Bognár) with their grandmother (Piroska Molnár), an abusive alcoholic who lives in a hovel near a German concentration camp, the children gradually turn into monsters.

The boys beat each other with belts and hurl insults at each other, hoping to inure themselves to physical pain and insult. They forgo food, roll in the snow and walk in the open during air raids in an attempt to become impervious to hunger, cold and fear.

At first, these seem like understandable reactions to abandonment, compounded by the mistreatment they receive at the hands of the grandmother, who smacks them around, treats them like slave labor, withholds food from them and steals the care packages mailed to them by their mother. The old woman is a thoroughly nasty person, and it’s no wonder that she’s known to the locals as the “witch.”

But the boys quickly begin to evince behavior that goes well beyond what one might expect from children in similar straits. They compulsively kill insects and then – in a shocking and, quite frankly, implausible series of escalations – do much, much worse.

Most bizarrely, they befriend both the Nazi commander of the concentration camp (Ulrich Thomsen), a creepy pedophile who admires their Spartan regimen, and a kindly old Jewish shoemaker (János Derzsi) who gives them free boots.

To all appearances, they are motivated neither by ideology nor human feeling.

Rather, their actions seem dictated by the necessities of the fiction, the point of which is never clear.

It would be unfair to expect verisimilitude from a tale like this. Like Oskar from “The Tin Drum,” the unnamed twins aren’t real people so much as, I don’t know,

manifestations of the schizoid post-war Hungarian national psyche, or something.

Inseparable throughout the film, they agree to do something at the end of the movie that is utterly preposterous, even given the bizarre occurrences that have already taken place. (As in “Drum,” there is a scene of sex with an older woman that seems a gratuitous attempt to shock, as well as other odd episodes that lend “The Notebook” the flavor of magic realism.) Yet the ending of the film is not just bizarre, but emotionally unsupported. That would be fine, if only I could figure out what all this was meant to stand for.

• “The Notebook” received two out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains violence, nudity, sexuality, obscenity and mature thematic material. It is in Hungarian and German with subtitles and runs 112 minutes.

Dear Reader: There is no single test that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, a doctor cannot make the diagnosis with absolute confidence without studying the brain under the microscope, which is rarely done except in an autopsy.

Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed presumptively by a combination of different types of evidence. The disease typically has a slowly progressive onset. Sudden confusion or speech problems, for example, are not caused by Alzheimer’s.

Indeed, a very important part of making a presumptive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is first ruling out many other causes of thinking problems. Other conditions, such as a brain tumor, can impair a person’s thinking. So can certain medicines.

When doctors suspect that a person may be developing Alzheimer’s disease, they often perform multiple tests to evaluate different aspects of thinking. The tests may involve paper and pencil, or may be administered by interacting with a computer: • Attention. A major reason people fail to remember new in-

There are many tests to assess attention. For example, the doctor might read a sequence of numbers, then ask the person to repeat back as many as he can remember.

• Memory. Memory testing usually requires that a person listen to or look at some information and then answer questions about it. Or the person may be asked to repeat it back immediately, and then again 10 to 30 minutes later. The doctor might also test long-term memory, things that almost everyone knows that happened long ago.

For example, your husband might be asked to name his birthplace, or who was the president of the United States during World War II. • Executive function. This is an umbrella term for high-level thinking skills. These include reasoning, problem solving, planning, inhibiting impulses and resisting distraction in order to stay focused on a task. These abilities often become impaired in early Alzheimer’s disease.

• Language. Language functions include being able to ex-

press yourself through speaking and writing. They also involve understanding what another person is saying or what you are reading. The doctor may ask the person to name common objects.

For example, the doctor may hold up a pencil and ask your husband what it’s called. Problems with naming and word finding can be early symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Your husband may be asked to follow instructions or describe a picture in writing.

• Spatial ability. This involves analyzing visual information – shapes, faces, and routes between locations on a map, for example.

Tests may include drawing and copying designs, solving maze puzzles and putting blocks together to construct a specific pattern.

Neuropsych testing cannot, alone, definitively diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. However, the testing results, along with the medical history, brain-imaging studies and other evidence, can give the doctor pretty strong evidence for or against Alzheimer’s.

He never bothered me again Dr. Wallace: I am the 14-year-old boy who wrote to you some time ago and told you that I hated school and was thinking about running away, or even worse, because a boy at school was picking on me every day. He demanded my lunch money, and if I didn’t give it to him he used me as a punching bag. I had gone to my school counselor and even the principal, but they didn’t do anything.

Even though I was fairly big, I was known as a sissy. I would just take it and never fight back.

You told me to stand up for myself and to defend myself the next time I was bullied. The next time was the next day. I refused to give him my lunch money and he started punching me. I then jumped on him, knocking him down and getting a few good punches in. I wound up with a bloody nose, but he had a lump on his head the size of an egg.

I want to thank you for your advice. I was suspended from school for two days, but it was well worth it. The bully also got a two-day suspension. The great news is that this guy has never bothered me again. In fact, he now talks to me once in a while and I am totally civil toward him.

After you printed my letter and gave me your advice, I noticed the column where a lot of people did not like it that you told me to fight back. It’s easy for them to disagree with you and to say that fighting is never the best way to solve a problem. But they were not in my situation. At times, when I was being pounded and robbed, the thought of ending my life flashed

Unfortunately, sometimes school authorities don’t realize what’s going on and fail to act.

When this is the case, the victim is on his own.

This is a frightening and complex situation that cannot be solved by a formulaic answer, even one as noble as “turn the other cheek,” which some interpret as meaning “avoid confrontation at all costs.”

This simply won’t work.

Sometimes you have to confront your tormentor – and sometimes doing so means throwing a punch or two.

I say this as a proponent of nonviolence.

But I also believe that when ignoring bullies does not work, you have to speak to bullies in a language they understand. You did so by fighting back.

I truly believe you defeated more than just one cowardly lunch-money extortionist. You defeated your own sense of helplessness in the face of life’s problems.

When is a 4-4 fit not so desirable?

Earlier this week, we saw deals in which a balanced fit (both partners had the same number of cards in it) was a better trump suit than an unbalanced. And that will usually be the case. But one time when a 4-4 fit is not best occurs when the trump holding is weak, resulting in an inevitable loser or two, and there are discards available from the other two side suits for those losers if it is the third side suit. This is typically the case in a slam – as in this deal.

When North opens one no-trump, South, with only a five-loser hand, should immediately be thinking about a slam.

He uses Stayman and learns of the 4-4 spade fit. But rather than opt immediately for that suit as trumps, he sensibly shows his club suit first. North rebids three hearts to indicate values in that suit and, by inference, weak diamonds. After that, the auction gets a tad murky around the edges, but South should prefer his strong clubs to those pitiful spades.

In six spades, North must lose one spade and one heart (and would go down two if spades broke 4-1). However, six clubs has 12 tricks: two spades, two hearts, two diamonds and six clubs.

Finally, note that if NorthSouth play transfers into the minors, there would be a strong case for South’s ignoring the spade suit and immediately transferring into clubs.

• For another twist on the classic striped pillow, Bethesda, Maryland-based Samantha Friedman recommends pillows that miter together stripes to be borders or squares, as with the Elaine Smith Venice Mitered Square ($106, www.authenteak. com).

• If a room needs a focal point, Selke recommends wide, bold-colored stripes. “I love stripes on most any piece of upholstered or slipcovered furniture,” she says. The Safavieh Mercer Green Club Chair ($508, www.lowes.com) would easily take center stage in a living room.

The stripe is the ultimate fix.

Need to make a room look taller? Paint or paper vertical stripes on the walls. Need to make a room look wider? Try horizontal stripes. Need to pull together a disparate color scheme? Find a striped rug that incorporates each color.

“Stripes are a problem-solver,” says Annie Selke, a Massachusetts-based designer and owner of textiles companies Pine Cone Hill, Fresh American and Dash & Albert Rug Co. (the last of which is popular for its approximately 150 striped rug patterns).

They can make a bold statement when wide or act as a textured neutral when thin.

They can read as nautical when blue-and-white or classy when used tone on tone.

It’s no wonder that while other patterns come and go in popularity, stripes are here to stay.

“You might change other

things in a room, but you can use the striped item again,” Selke says. “Stripes never go out of style.”

We talked to Selke and two other designers for tips and tricks when using the versatile pattern.

• Selke loves the way that British designer and boutique hotelier Kit Kemp uses stripes, remembering the ones used on a headboard in one of her hotels: “She used them in the headboard to create a focal point.”

Try it at home with the blackand-white Canopy Stripe Loran Headboard ($300-$460, www. worldmarket.com).

• Although Selke generally likes her stripes to be bold, Maryland-based interior designer Dana Tydings likes her stripes subtle.

“Use them carefully, use them sparingly. I’d much rather have them look low-key and elegant,” she says.
