St. Charles North alumnus to compete on ‘The Voice’

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles North High School alumnus this fall will appear on NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition, one of his former teachers said.

Jeffery Austin McClelland, who now goes by Jeffery Austin, is one of the many contestants to participate in the show’s first round of auditions, St. Charles North choral director Dale Morgan said.

The show’s ninth season premiered Monday, but McClelland’s audition has not yet aired.

A Warner Brothers publicist said she could not reveal when McClelland’s audition will run, but encouraged those following him to keep watching for his televised performance.

“He’s a terrific young man, and he’s got a beautiful voice,” Morgan said.

McClelland, 24, graduated from St. Charles North in 2009 and made a few appearances at the school this week.

On Wednesday, McClelland performed the Ed Sheeran song “Thinking Out Loud” in front of hundreds of students in the school’s main gym during a break in the Homecoming Small Games competition.

McClelland is not yet allowed to talk to reporters about his participation on the show, but he appeared happy and relaxed Wednesday throughout his appearance and performance. During his high school years, Mc-

St. Charles North senior Keeley Svoboda said she was impressed by McClelland’s ability to connect with the student audience, who were seated in-the-round in the gym while McClelland stood dead center.

“It must be nerve-wracking coming back to your school,” Svoboda said. “I thought he did a really great job.”

Should McClelland advance in the competition,

Morgan said he hopes the larger Tri-Cities community will watch the show and support him.

Svoboda predicted McClelland will advance in the show and be part of “Voice” judge and Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine’s team.

“I hope he wins – I’ll be rooting for him,” Svoboda said of McClelland.

Elburn bed and breakfast OK’d; party venue denied

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Two years ago, Judy Singer said she was working to fix up a barn on her property at 420 E. Kansas St. in Elburn.

She said the Aaron Whitney Homestead could be a place where she could have a bed and breakfast business, as well as a venue for private parties.

“As I was doing it, I found out I couldn’t do it,” Singer said.

The area is zoned residential, so Singer would need a special-use permit to do what she planned, and her request has been heard by Elburn’s planning commission. Commission members recommended the bed and break-

fast business, but they did not recommend the private party venue. On Monday, Elburn Village Board members agreed with the commission’s suggestions, approving the bed and breakfast and denying the party venue.

The property is the largest in its neighborhood, and also sits within walking distance of the parking lot for the Elburn Metra station. Part of the request included a request to use part of the Metra parking lot. Village officials were conditionally in favor of that part of the request, pending further discussion with Metra officials.

Fall rocks at STC Underground

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com Come fall, students may sing the back-to-school blues, but they can start humming a different tune through STC Underground programs that help the season beat its “fun’s-over” bad rap.

Whether they’re downloading tunes, watching videos or going to live performances, teens naturally are drawn to the creative and emotional outlet music provides. And while listening to popular bands may be a favorite pastime of many teens, few actually get the chance to compose, record or film their own original work.

All that changes with two new programs developed by STC Underground recreation supervisor Dan Procaccio. Using Apple’s popular GarageBand music creation software, participants in the three-part “Music Making” program will collaborate on the composition of a rap song that represents the essence and mission of the STC Underground.

And as if that weren’t cool enough, they can then follow up on their work in the subsequent “Music Video” class, where they’ll learn how to bring the song they just wrote to life. The resulting video will be prominently featured in the marketing and promotional campaigns that help get the word out about why the STC Underground is so special to area teens.

This fall, STC Underground will host “Music Making” and “Music Video” classes. The teen center is at 101 S. Second St. in St. Charles. park district marketing. He also performs with his own band and frequently uses GarageBand in composing original work.

“GarageBand makes it really easy for people to make their own music,” he said. Kids from all musical backgrounds are welcome to sign up for the program, and no previous knowledge of GarageBand software is necessary.

“We may even get some teens who know [Garage Band] much better than I do,” Procaccio said. “That will be great! I’m open to all

input. This is truly going to be a collaborative effort.”

Wednesday nights, the “Music Making” and “Music Video” classes are a dealand-a-half. A mere $5 for all three sessions, “Music Making” will be Oct. 7, 14 and 21, while the “Music Video” program runs Nov. 18, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9.

The STC Underground has been rocking local teens’ world for years. Since its inception, the cool combination of fun and games, study and socializing has attracted more and more participants

every year.

“We just hit a milestone of 800 members,” said Darby Beasley, teen program and center director. “We just keep growing and growing.”

That’s probably because something always is up at the Underground. With returning favorite programs – such as “Shindigs,” where teens get to venture into the upstairs auditorium at the Baker Community Center for dodge ball and other games or participate in Minecraft tournaments – the Underground is known as a unique place for teens to hang out,

St. Charles police arrest 6, cite 26 during traffic campaign KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police made six arrests and issued 26 citations for various offenses as part of a recent two-week enforcement period, according to a news release.

The enforcement period, which ended Sept. 7, was

done in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns, the release stated.

There were five DUI arrests and one arrest for driving with a suspended license, according to the release.

There were 16 citations for

speeding, three citations for uninsured motorists, two citations for safety belt violations, four citations for other Illinois Vehicle Code violations and one citation for driving while using a cellphone, the release stated. A total of 27 written warning notices also were issued.

The goal of the enforce-

ment period was to reduce the frequency and severity of injury-related crashes, fatal crashes and achieve a higher use of safety belts, child safety seats and booster seats, the release stated.

Citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the release indicates seat belt use is the single most

effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in accidents.

When lap and shoulder belts are used properly, the release stated, the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.

Born: Dec. 23, 1939; in Sterling, KS Died: Sept. 20, 2015; in Chicago, IL Dee Jay Newby, age 75, of St. Charles, entered Heaven’s gates on September 20, 2015 at Loyola University Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Dee was born in Sterling, Kansas on December 23, 1939. He was the first-born son of D.J. and Erma Newby. Growing up in Hutchinson, Dee graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1958 and continued on to receive a Bachelor’s of Education Degree from Emporia State Teacher’s College in 1962.

After writing letters long distance for two years, Dee was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Jane H. Newby (Hagemann) on August 14, 1965 in Louisville, Kentucky.

They were happily married for 50 years.

After moving to St. Charles, Dee

spent his thirty-year teaching career as a 7th grade Language Arts teacher at Haines Middle School in St. Charles. He was also a basketball coach and helped coach his daughter’s soccer games. He was a hard-working man and for many years worked at the men’s clothing store, Erday’s in Geneva after teaching. After retirement, he continued to help young students through tutoring.

He enjoyed history, reading, going to the movies and he was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and would listen to his favorite broadcasters on WGN radio especially during the Cub’s games. He loved Harry Carry and Ron Santo along with Pat Hughes.

Dee is survived by his loving wife, Jane; his three loving children, David H. Newby, William S. Newby, and Elizabeth A. Newby; his three grandchildren, Sean, William, and Sabrina Newby; his sister, Donita Hedrick; and brother-in-law, Gordon Hedrick; two nieces, Pam Wells (Jesse) and Nancy French; a great niece, Emma French; and two great nephews, Gage and Kai French; along with many cousins and extended family.

Dee is preceded in death by his parents, D. J. Newby and Erma Newby (Harper); and his favorite miniature poodle, Tillie who was always by his side and was there to welcome him to his eternal life.

Richard A. “Mac” McAuley, age 84, of Elburn, formerly of St. Charles, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at his home as the result of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease and pneumonia.

He was born on October 11, 1930, in Chicago, the son of the late Anthony and Mary (Kane) McAuley.

Mac was employed by Commonwealth Edison Company for 42 years before retiring in 1989.

Richard proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army. After his honorable discharge from the service, he married the love of his life, Joan B. Luders, on May 21, 1955 at St. Eulalia Parish in Maywood, IL. They were recently able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

Richard loved to travel and did so extensively throughout the United States and Canada. He enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting with his brothers and sons. In recent months, Mac could be found on his Cub Cadet, riding the mower till the sun went down.

Mac raised his four children to each have a wonderful sense of humor, which had always filled family gatherings with lots of laughter.

His joy was seeing each of them live their lives on their own terms and to not worry about what other people think. “That’s why God gave us two ears; let it in one ear and out the other.” Good advice unless he was doing the talking!

He leaves behind his wife, Joan; two daughters and two sons, Debbie (Geoff) Poole, Cindy (Mike) Miller, Shawn McAuley and Kevin (Jody Harness) McAuley; three

granddaughters, Becky (Nick) Chin and their children, Sophia and Grace; Kari (Danny) Kosel and Kate (TJ) Colborn and their son, Blake; five grandsons, Kyle (Nikki Colburn) Miller, Steve Miller and his daughter, Ava, Shane McAuley, Connor McAuley and Grant McAuley; two brothers, Lawrence McAuley and Robert (JoAnne) McAuley; a special cousin, Steve (Maria) McAuley; sister-in-law, Phyllis (Joe) Kramer; many nieces, nephews and a community of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Mary McAuley; a sister, and brother-in-law, Mary (John) Lorang.

According to the family’s wishes, a private family service has already been held.

BATAVIA – Montessori Academy has asked city officials for permission to keep chickens on its six-acre campus, at 595 S. River St., as part of its curriculum on the environment and the natural world.

Montessori director Jocelyn Scotty sent a letter to city zoning officials asking for permission to keep four chickens initially, then up to eight in subsequent years.

The issue recently was discussed at a Committee of the Whole meeting.

The request would require an amendment to the city code, officials said, as Batavia’s 2011 ordinance allows permits for chickens only in single-family homes zoned residential.

The city has issued 20 permits so far with few complaints, Planning and Zoning Officer Joel Strassman said.

“At this point, we did not get any direction from the Committee of the Whole to expand the chicken ordinance to any properties other than schools,” Strassman said.

Strassman said he tentatively expected the proposal to come up again at the committee meeting next month.

Scotty said once the city amends its code, the school will be getting chickens from a family in Batavia or a staff member who also has them.

Scotty said raising chickens is part of the school’s “wholechild” approach to education.

“Why do we have to take care of these animals in a

humane way? What we feed them affects what we eat,” Scotty said, as an example of a real-world lesson for children.

In her letter to Batavia officials, Scotty wrote, “Montessori Academy would like to add a chicken coop to its campus to further develop our students’ opportunities for hands-on experience with the natural world, specifically calling attention to where our food comes from, and how we care for our animals affects the food they provide us.”

The coop is proposed to be between two of its buildings to provide additional shelter for the hens, according to Scotty’s letter.

The private nonprofit school has 65 students from preschool through eighth grade. Scotty’s letter details a schedule of how the students would care for the chickens, clean the coop, collect the eggs and devise a system for pricing and selling the eggs.

“No negative effects are expected to surrounding properties,” Scotty’s letter stated. “The location of the coop ensures very minimal noise, sight or odor issues for our neighbors.”

Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit said he would support the school’s request because none of the problems people feared would happen have occurred – when the issue of backyard chickens was debated.

“There are no chickens roaming the streets, no roosters crowing,” Chanzit said.

“I have no problem giving this experience for the children.”

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Through his attorney, St. Charles resident Clifford McIlvaine on Wednesday fought to dismiss tens of thousands of dollars in fines and fees the city is seeking from him.

The city asserts McIlvaine – who has been at odds with St. Charles over his decades-long home improveClifford ment project – McIlvaine owes $66,006.77 in attorneys’ fees and $64,200 in fines for being behind schedule. He was fined $100 a day for 642 days.

“We believe the city is seeking far in excess of what’s justified here,” McIlvaine’s attorney, Philip Piscopo, said.

The parties argued their cases before Kane County Judge David Akemann at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

Akemann said McIlvaine’s

motion to dismiss will be granted in part and denied in part.

The reasons – along with what will and won’t be granted – will be spelled out in a written order, he said, noting some research is required before the details are set.

A status hearing was set for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2.

Akemann also considered a motion relating to the city’s lien against McIlvaine’s house. The city asserts McIlvaine owes it $84,936 for the work it did on his house, as well as associated fees and costs.

The judge denied McIlvaine’s motion to dismiss.

“We argued the lien was defective, and the court disagreed,” Piscopo said.

The city’s counsel, Phil Luetkehans, indicated satisfaction with the judge’s decision on that matter.

“We’re happy with the court’s ruling,” he said.

McIlvaine, who lives at 605 Prairie St., started his improvement project more than 30 years ago.

Stopka said that wouldn’t be enough. He said such events shouldn’t be staged in a residential area. He also was concerned about the potential effect on property values.

“If you bring that many people into a small neighborhood, it’s chaos,” Stopka said. He said adding restric-

tions wouldn’t ease his concerns.

“She says it’s going to be once a month, but what holds her to that?” he said.

Another nearby property owner, Jon Wenberg, said there could be events, such as weddings with bands that might be playing.

“I don’t have a problem with a bed and breakfast,” he said. “A bed and breakfast is five people, four people.”

The planning commission unanimously recommended against the private party venue, stating it would not be “harmonious and appropriate in appearance with the existing or intended character of the general vicinity” and it would be “hazardous or disturbing to existing or future neighborhood uses.”

Elburn trustees said they needed more information, and Singer said she could try again with some changes.

A large sign displayed as of Tuesday night on the side of the restaurant that faces Route 47 read: “Closed.

A smaller note taped to a window on the side that faces Valley Drive included a longer note attributed to Nick Frey, the restaurant’s owner.

It indicated the owner enjoyed “the location for its smaller city feel” and added “the people were so nice and welcoming to us.”

The note said the owner felt his heart wasn’t in it recently, “as some of you have seen lately, and I want to dearly apologize for that behavior and I meant no ill will toward anyone.”

Munchie P’s offered a menu including hamburgers, gyros, hot dogs and beef, as well as pizza puffs, fries and more.

The note indicated a restaurant offering such fare could do well in the same location.

“I truly feel Elburn needs Munchie’s or some form of it, because it’s a great change for what’s here,” the note said. “I think someone can really bring it alive and can make it the small town treasure it so deserves. You cannot beat this location.

We have great products, and the gyro was fantastic, in my guests’ opinion.”

LOCAL BRIEF Mediacom offering $55,000 scholarship

Mediacom Communications is offering $55,000 in scholarship support for high school seniors who plan to obtain further education.

The scholarship program is in its 15th consecutive year, and Mediacom’s investment will award $1,000 world class scholarships to 55 high school seniors.

Scholarship recipients are given the flexibility to use the financial award to support educational expenses for higher education or vocational training from any accredited post-secondary institution starting in fall 2016. Award selection is based on academic

achievement and leadership.

Applications are available online at www.mediacomworldclass.com.

All high schools in Mediacom-served communities were sent informational cards asking school officials to make seniors aware of the scholarship and encourage submission of applications on or before the February 15, 2016 deadline.

What I hate about driving BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina I’m casually driving down a long, country road. I’m jamming out to a random variety of tunes on my iPod, singing along to each song lyric that I have so easily memorized.

Like any responsible driver, I quickly glance out my rearview mirror. Out of nowhere, I spot a car down the road.

OK, big deal. I’m finally not the only car on the lonely rural road; I now have company. Nevertheless, after peeping at my rearview mirror again, I notice that this car is not just any car. This vehicle is going what seems like 90 mph in a 50 mph zone. I sigh; it’s one of those drivers again.

I soon begin to feel anxious as the car is driving so fast, gaining on me every second.

I’m merely driving 5 mph over the speed limit, and I already feel like a cop is going to pull me over any minute.

Nonetheless, I continue driving at the same pace, just picking up a bit of speed. That is, until that exact car comes up right behind me, practically hugging the end of my car it’s so close.

The speed limit sign reads 50 mph, yet the driver behind me thinks that my idea of going close to 60 mph isn’t appropriate; it’s too slow for them.

I instantly wish there were some sort of button I could press in my car to relax this reckless driver, or better yet, make them disappear from my sight.

For the next 10 minutes, I continue driving on the same street. To no surprise, the same car does not slow down behind me. I reach my hometown, to which the onelane street turns into multiple lanes. Finally, the driver behind me suddenly turns

left, while I go straight. I have done it. At last, they turned the other direction, and I am now free.

Now, maybe I’m just a nervous driver at times, but I absolutely cannot stand when I am just driving peacefully down a road, and then all of a sudden some maniac thinks it’s acceptable to just invade my personal driving space. I feel like everyone has experienced a driving situation similar to the one that I described above. Let me just say, it is getting real annoying having to deal with these drivers almost every day when I drive to and from college.

I would just like to know the reason for these drivers’ behavior. Are they in a hurry, and am I just slowing them down?

If that’s the case, in these types of situations, should I be the one to politely pull over and let them pass me by? Then again, they could just be speeding because they solely want to drive wild and loose to show off their nice car. Therefore, should I just ignore these obvious drivers?

Three years ago when I was learning to drive, I was a nervous wreck every time my foot touched a car gas pedal, since I felt like other drivers around me were constantly judging my driving abilities.

Now, I’d say I’m very comfortable driving. But even with that, please everyone, be courteous while you drive.

Where are all the Democrats’ prime-time debates?

BLOOMBERG NEWS The bounce Carly Fiorina received from last week’s presidential debate has undoubtedly left many of her fellow candidates feeling jealous – and not just Republicans. Most of the Democrats trying to gain traction against Hillary Clinton are demanding more debates in hopes of raising their public profiles, too. By refusing, the Democratic National Committee not only hurts those candidates, but also denies voters the chance to see a fair fight for the nomination.

The first of four Democratic debates before voting begins will not take place until mid-October – and three of them are on weekends.

If the Democratic Party were trying to keep the audience to a minimum, it could hardly have drawn up a better plan. Equally

troubling, candidates who participate in any debate not sanctioned by the DNC forfeit their right to join the official debates. Why would a party want to muzzle its candidates this way?

It doesn’t take a cynic to believe that the DNC has the Clinton’s campaign’s best interests in mind.

Front-runners almost always prefer to minimize the number of debates and their viewers, and the DNC chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was co-chair of Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. Martin O’Malley has accused her of rigging the schedule and the rules in Clinton’s favor, and it’s hard not to sympathize with him.

The DNC’s priority should be to encourage broad discussion of the issues and give all candidates a chance to make their case. O’Malley is

polling at about 2 percent, not far below where Fiorina stood before the second Republican debate.

More time in the spotlight might not boost his standing, but voters should make that decision, not the party.

Clinton says she’s open to more debates. Yet she refuses to call for them, saying it’s the DNC’s decision – as though her campaign holds no sway with the party.

Happily, the DNC is facing mounting public pressure to act. Over the weekend, when Wasserman Schultz attempted to address a party convention in New Hampshire, she was drowned out by chants of, “We want debates!” Some national party leaders have gotten the message. Two of its vice chairs have called for more debates, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has joined them.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Steel Beam Theatre founder Donna Steele to resign in November

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A calmness filled the air of the empty 79-seat Steel Beam Theatre, contradicting the usual liveliness evoked by the countless actors who have graced its stage over the last 14 seasons.

Sitting center stage in a regal, highbacked chair ordinarily used as a prop, founder Donna Steele tried to remember what the room resembled before it became the artistic world she created. A world now populated by thespians expressing the delights and tragedies of the human experience and a place where reality calls for make-believe in order to both enlighten and entertain.

When Steele first laid eyes on the then storage area that became Steel Beam Theatre, she initially wrote of the experience: “I peered into [the] space ... and through the dust and grime of many years, and the plaster here and there that disguised the beautiful river-stone walls, I saw a perfect space ... for a theater.”

After hearing her own words echoed back to her more than a decade later, Steele was silent for a moment – pausing to choke back tears – before uttering, “It’s been fast.”

After 15 years as the founder and executive/artistic director of the nonprofit theater, Steele is resigning. The childrens’ theater production of “Pippi Longstocking,” running in October, will be the last show she will direct at Steel Beam.

“It’s been a wonderful journey,” she said. “It’s a lot of hard work, and I am very proud of the work we’ve accomplished, but my career and my heart are calling me elsewhere.”

Various factors led to her decision to resign, she said.

“I’m starting the life of an actor, which is total uncertainty,” Steele said, adding that she plans to move to Portland, Oregon, to “follow her heart” for personal reasons.

A steadfast desire to solely pursue acting has come at a time when she recently was granted membership to the Actors Equity – a professional actors union – and the right person was in place to take the helm of the theater after her departure, she said.

“I never could have thought about relocation and just walking away. I had to have a plan; I had to have someone I knew could take over,” said Steele, whose resignation is effective Nov. 1.

Elgin resident Marge Uhlarik-Boller, who is currently directing the theater’s 15th season opener – “The Good People” – will replace Steele. Steele described the two-year resident director as “brilliant,” “passionate” and “the person to take us into the future,” Steele said.

“I want [people] to know that the hard work and the dedication of the board and the artists and all of the people who have made [Steel Beam] what it is today, nothing will change except for a couple personnel,” Steele said. “I think the spirit lives on as ever and the community and the audience needs to keep coming and keep supporting.”

Of the responsibility, Uhlarik-Boller said she has large shoes to fill, but also is fulfilling a lifelong dream of her own by working in theater full time.

“I have done theater forever ... I direct a great deal, and this is a dream for me to devote myself 100 percent to theater,” said Uhlarik-Boller. “The legacy is, of course, that – from very little – Donna built this theater, and it’s quite a lot to uphold, so of course I am excited and thrilled and proud.”

Steele built the theater using money from an inheritance she received from her parents. Family ties to Steel Beam have further heightened the emotional toll of her resignation. Since the theater’s inception, a seat in the audience had always been designated for her father until his death in May 2014. “[My father] saw every show here, except for the last one, which was during the course of when he died,” Steele said. “The last show he saw starred my daughter, so that was pretty special.”

In addition to adult programming, Steele also implemented youth programming in an effort to inject younger generations with the same passion she has for acting.

“She had such a strong children’s

program that really touched and reached thousands of kids who – of course – had never been on stage, had never read a script and had never been outside of themselves, so to speak,” said Geneva resident Dana Teichart, the former Steel Beam Theatre Board of Directors president who retired after nine years of service. “That was very gratifying to her.”

In honor of the service Steele has provided to the arts community, she will receive a Mayor’s Proclamation in October, said Teichart, who received the same commendation upon her retirement from Steel Beam.

Such an honor could help memorialize the contributions Steele has made to the local theater scene, but Steel Beam’s ability to endure the test of time is how she hopes her legacy will live on.

“The way I’d like to be remembered is to just keep it going. People fall in love with this place. It is magical. It isn’t me.

It’s something bigger than me,” Steele said. “I’d love to come back here when I’m celebrating my 100th birthday and sit in the front row ... .”

Through his direction, Corti is able to make the audience feel more connected to the sprawling musical.

Having Colte Julian -–who plays main character Curly – stroll past the audience on the opening number instead of just appearing on stage goes a long way in cementing that connection.

With his impressive vocal range, Julian sets the bar high early on in the musical. And thanks to the talents of the rest of the cast, that bar never wavers.

What Ludovic Dervin hopes for is to make wines that connect people from all walks of life. The wife of a Mumm executive shared a yoga class with the wife of Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall-of-Famer Carlos Santana.

The legendary guitarist wanted to develop a wine for his charity. A lunch meeting was set with Dervin, who was warned Santana can be shy and doesn’t usually stay for lunch.

But at Mumm, Santana stayed four hours. Feeling an attachment to the winery, he would share an unforgettable experience with Dervin.

“You could feel the vibes at the winery that day,” Dervin said. “Carlos is a very spiritual person. The workforce at the

winery has many Hispanic members, and they were excited. You could feel the energy in the air. We thought he might leave after the meeting.

“But we started talking, and he told me about a guitarist I had to hear. He sent one of his staff members out to his car to grab a CD. We put it in the player in my office, and he leaned back in the chair and just started to play air guitar to the music. It was like an out-ofbody experience. Here’s Carlos Santana sharing music with me and playing air guitar in my office.”

When Dervin arrived in California 20 years ago with only a backpack slung over his shoulder, he never envisioned such an experience. He just wanted an opportunity. The native of Champagne, France, had backed into the wine industry.

“I took the path of least resistance; I was a lazy student, but I was good at math and science,” Dervin said. “I studied biochemistry but couldn’t see myself wearing a white coat standing in a lab all day for the rest of

my life. I met a winemaker and thought it was interesting to study the vineyard. I like to be outdoors. When I started to talk to winemakers about a career I was surprised how open they were. I saw a twinkle in their eye, a passion for what they did. I got accepted into school my first year even though the competition was tight.”

Today he’s the winemaker of what I believe is one of the top sparkling wine houses in the country.

“Napa Valley is a pretty magical place,” said Dervin, who started harvest on July 22 – one day earlier than the previous record established in 1997.

“The climate is great. It’s cool in the evening and foggy in the morning. We get slow, steady ripening for pinot noir and chardonnay. Their skins are thin so they can easily dehydrate, but we get the perfect balance.”

“It helps us to be honest with ourselves and not swayed with the images that are conjured up because of the color of the wine,” Dervin said.

Expectations high for Hawks after last season’s success

It all started when 50 athletes showed up on the doorstep wanting to play spring hockey. It continues this fall with a team which will bring 18 skaters and two goalies to each game and a host of returning players such as reigning Illinois Suburban Hockey League leading scorer Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North).

“It’s rough, that’s for sure,” BC coach Mike Gecan said. “Some of the long drives we have to take, some well over an hour, and never getting the chance to just relax and stay at home and play.

The boys are excited and I’m excited for them.”

Gecan said the field maintenance has been just about completed, which was focused around the front of the goals, and he couldn’t help referencing the football field situation at St. Edward in Elgin.

“It wasn’t quite that bad, but it wasn’t playable,” Gecan said.

By accident, the St. Edward football field was ‘”fertilized” with weed killer earlier this month, which put quite the damper on the games expected to be played there for the remainder of the season.

As mentioned, Gecan said he is excited for his team to finally get to have home fans because, well, they’ve earned it.

“We could really use a home game,” Gecan said. “It’s different showing up, knowing you’re playing at your school.

The guys have worked hard and deserve to finally get to play at home.”

After 12 straight road games to start the season, the Rockets will play three straight contests at BC, hosting Marengo, Rockford Christian and North Boone in Big Northern Conference East Division play.

Capitalizing on chances crucial in UEC River

Regardless of whether teams are

having what coaches call a down year in the Upstate Eight Conference, there is always competitive soccer to be played.

Whether you come in unbeaten in conference play or haven yet to win a game, there are no easy matches.

“In these games, as you say, the phone book is out the window,” St. Charles East coach Paul Jennison said Tuesday after the Saints’ 2-1 loss to St. Charles North.

“There isn’t really a favorite, regardless of where the game is played. It comes down to the team that takes the emotion out of the game and takes advantage of the chances they are given.”

“These teams are pretty evenly matched up,” North coach Eric Willson said. “I think we have that mindset going in that you have to convert the chances you’re given or it can come back to hurt you. If you can execute your game plan just a little bit better, it can make all the difference.”

The North Stars seized control of the River Division with the win, moving to 2-0, while East fell to 1-1. Batavia sits at 1-1-1 in River action, and has always shown signs of being a dangerous program come conference and postseason play, as well.

Geneva will gets its chance to turn around a 0-1-1 start to conference play with games against each of its Tri-Cities rivals still to play.

It’s busy enough being a fall high school athlete.

Imagine being a multi-sport athlete during the same season, playing football and soccer simultaneously.

Kaneland senior Drew Franklin has found a way to not only play both sports, but to also shine while doing so.

Franklin has converted 18 of 18 point-after attempts and sent many kickoffs into the end zone for the 3-1 Knights football team. He also has a couple assists for the 5-5-3 soccer squad, despite not being available for all 13 games to date.

An overlap with his two athletics schedules makes it difficult for Franklin to attend every soccer practice and game. That was most apparent last weekend.

With his soccer teammates enjoying a great bonding experience off the field and a good weekend on it in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, Franklin remained in Maple Park. He booted a pair of PATs before the rain came Friday, then added three more when the Knights finished off Yorkville, 35-7, on Saturday night.

“I didn’t plan on going to Wisconsin anyway. It was a hard decision, but it had to be made,” Franklin said. “It hurts to have to leave my teammates behind like that, but I’m going to college for football, so that’s my main priority.”

Balancing his schedule takes its toll, but Franklin would have it no other way.

“It’s not necessarily super difficult, but it’s a lot of work making sure both coaches are on the same page, and that I’m on the same page with my coaches,” he said. “It’s great. I love playing both sports, and honestly, you’re only in high school once.”

“Even though kicking is the same motion, kicking a football and soccer ball is much different,” Franklin added.

“In football, you want it to go straight.

In soccer, you want the ball move in different ways. It’s just a matter of making the right transition and being consistent with everything you do.”

So far, so good for this Knight.

Rosary swimmer Rentz commits to Notre Dame KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE Rosary swimmer Katie Rentz grew up hearing about the Notre Dame swimming and diving program.

Her dad swam and mom was a diver at Notre Dame and, up until last year, it Katie was just stories Rentz for her.

That all changed when Rentz committed to Notre Dame on Tuesday night to join the family tradition of swimming for the Fighting Irish.

“I was raised at a young age knowing about it,” Rentz said of Notre Dame. “But I never really saw it as a college until last year. After a recruiting trip there, I fell in love with it.

I really felt the feel of family at both the school and inside the team. I’m so excited to join the Notre Dame family next year.”

The Aurora native also took unofficial visits to Northwestern and the University of Chicago, but canceled the official visits after her trip over Labor Day weekend to Notre Dame.

Rentz is well on her way to making another trip to the state tournament this year after qualifying for state in two races in each of her first three years at Rosary. The past two years have been in the 100-yard butterfly and 500 freestyle.

“It reminded me a lot of our high school team at Rosary,” Rentz said. “Everyone is committed to helping each other succeed and that’s something I wanted in a school at the next level. Now I can enjoy my senior year and help the school team shoot for our goal of winning state.”

With swimmers like Rentz and 2014 Kane County Chronicle Swimmer of the Year Alexis Yager, there’s a good chance the Royals, who finished as last year’s state runner-up, could take the next step to close out Rentz’s high school career.

The soccer part of Davison’s college life is off to a good start, too. The Cats started 3-0 for the first time in program history and boast a 7-1-2 record heading into Thursday night’s game against Maryland. Davison has made six starts and appeared in eight of the team’s 10 games. Getting up to speed with the college game, another one of those somewhat scary challenges for Davison, hasn’t been too much of a problem thanks to her teammates.

“The college game is definitely quicker than playing at a club level or a high school level. It’s definitely something scary the first time you step on the field, but quickly we were able to adjust,” she said. “The intensity level at practice has helped. We’re training like we play, and just being pushed by your teammates and the level at practice has definitely helped when we get into our game situations.”

Davison is playing along-

side a familiar face, sharing defensive duties with Kayla Sharples, a Naperville native and fellow freshman who played with Davison on her club team for the past several seasons. Their familiarity, along with a pair of other young defensive players, Kassidy Gorman and Nikia Smith, has Davison feeling like this defensive group can thrive at Northwestern for years to come.

“Being a part of Northwestern’s defense this year, we’re uniquely a very young back line,” she said. “We have two sophomores and two freshmen. Me and Kayla played next to each other, we were on the same club team, so we’ve been playing next to each other for five years. And now I think having different players on our outside of the defense has been hard to adjust, but they are both amazing players, Kassidy and Nikia, and it’ll be huge for the program to have all four of us being able to play together for three years since we’re so young and really

develop a strong back line.”

The “scary” wasn’t all about soccer and school, though. Davison felt for a moment that she might have picked a school that was too close to home. But even that “fear” has gone by the wayside as she’s reaping the benefits of playing and going to school close to where she grew up.

“I was almost scared that I was too close and wasn’t going to be as independent as I thought, but I’ve really enjoyed being able on the off days that we get to home, even if it’s just for the day to see my family and relax,” she said.

“It’s nice to have, if I don’t go home, my sister and my brothers coming out and taking me out to dinner and just catching up. It’s definitely something that I look forward to every week, seeing them. For them to come see my games, it’s huge the support from my family and my friends. My mom has been at every game, including when we went to Colorado for two games. She flew out. So the support from

everyone here has just been great.”

As for on the field, Davison is hoping the Cats can continue their recent streak of success. Although classes are just underway, the regular-season schedule is already halfway over. The Big Ten championships start in a little over a month and the NCAA championships not long after that. Already off to a strong start, Davison just wants the wins to keep coming for Northwestern.

“As a team, we really hope to continue the success we’ve had so far this season,” she said. “We just keep looking for those opportunities to make history, and it’s really motivating us to turn the program around and start making a difference and getting those NCAA bids.”

For any freshman, the first taste of college can be a little scary.

For Geneva High School grad Hannah Davison, she has to deal with a pair of daunting challenges: the athletic rigors of Big Ten soccer and the academic rigors of Northwestern University. A benefit, however, of being a Wildcat is a somewhat unique academic calendar, one that allowed Davison – and all the other student-athletes at the school – to get used to a few weeks of competition before starting classes. The school year began just this week.

“That was definitely a perk of being on a quarter system here, that we got to start our season and even get into some Big Ten games before having to worry about balancing soccer and school,” Davison said.

“We kept our focus at practice.

The intensity has been great at practice. And our coaches have been great with showing us where our resources are now that we do have that balance between soccer and school. It’s been a very scary transition, but it’s been going very smoothly.”

That hasn’t made the academic challenges of attending Northwestern any less steep, but Davison raved about her support system, one that she feels will make it easier to balance sports and school now that classes are officially in session.

“It was a scary thing first starting, but now that I’m in my classes – I definitely feel a little out of place, a lot of times you’re the only athlete in the class – but I really feel it’s a place where I’m going to succeed,” Davison said. “The resources that are available to obviously the student-athletes, but even just the regular students here are amazing.

There’s so much help, and everyone here wants everyone to succeed. Whether it’s tutors or your coach or teammates or friends that you’re making, everyone’s just been offering their hand and their support for anything that we’ve needed, if it’s a personal thing

“With the practices we have had so far, we seem to have really good chemistry. … I know we lost a certain amount of talent off of last year, but I feel the incoming players we picked up will make up for the losses we suffered,” Kurtzhals said.

Birth Mother in Georgia” on June 12 – “Because the college loan agreement with your daughter was verbal and wasn’t put in writing, you don’t have a legal means to force her to assume the loan payments” – was wrong!

Verbal agreements are enforced if they can be proven to be true. Even if the daughter didn’t promise to make the payments, she may be held liable for them because money provided for the benefit of another gives rise to an implied and enforceable obligation to repay it.

If the statute of limitations has not run out, I think she’s got a pretty good case. Whether it’s economically feasible is another issue, as is the wisdom of getting into litigation with one’s daughter.

Common spices may offer multiple health benefits Dear Doctor K: I’ve read about the health benefits of spices that most of us have in our kitchen cabinets. Is there anything to this?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet you’ve been seasoning your food for years, using herbs and spices to add freshness and depth to your dishes. Researchers have begun to investigate the effects of these flavor enhancers on health. It turns out that herbs and spices may do much more than make your food more inviting.

Spices and herbs contain concentrated amounts of phytochemicals, plant chemicals that help combat disease. These nutrients are antimicrobial, which means they protect the body from bacteria and food-borne illnesses. Below are some of the latest research findings: • When meats such as beef, pork or chicken are exposed to high heat from grilling or frying, carcinogens called HCAs form.

Adding rosemary to ground beef may help prevent the formation of HCAs. • There are many studies of cinnamon, but they unfortunately come to different conclusions.

Some find that cinnamon lowers levels of blood sugar and cholesterol, but others do not. I think

Dried herbs keep their antioxidant and phytochemical content during the drying process. So whether you buy dried or fresh herbs is a matter of personal preference.

Try substituting herbs and spices for salt, added sugar or fats. This can be a healthy way to reduce excess calories without sacrificing flavor.

Here are some commonly used herbs and spices, along with health benefits that some research has attributed to them: • Cinnamon. Helps kill any bacteria that may have gotten

into food; and as said earlier, may lower blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol levels.

• Turmeric. May inhibit tumor growth in colon, breast, prostate cancers; aids digestion; relieves arthritis inflammation.

• Rosemary. Reduces carcinogens that form on meat when grilled or fried; may reduce cancer growth; may increase ability to concentrate.

• Garlic. May disrupt cancer cell metabolism; associated with decreased risk of stomach and colon cancers; modestly reduces blood pressure.

• Paprika/chili peppers.

Reduces gas; increases immunity; decreases cancer cell survival.

• Oregano. Highest antioxidant-containing herb; decreases brain inflammation.

• Cloves. May kill cancer cells; antioxidant; numbing agent.

It is possible that these spices may have such direct health benefits. However, the healthiest reason to use spices is to make nutritious foods taste even better.

Mom should stop playing cupid Dr. Wallace: Our high school has an annual back-to-school dance where the girls ask the boys for a date. My boyfriend and I broke up a month ago, so I decided I didn’t want to go this year even though it’s a fun dance.

Yesterday my mom went to a party and another lady she knows was also there. This lady has a son who goes to my high school. He’s a nice guy and fairly popular. The lady told my mother that her son had just broken up with his girlfriend and he was disappointed because the breakup happened just before the big dance. Then my mother told this lady that I had also recently broken up with my boyfriend, and that I would be glad to ask her son to the dance.

When she told me this I said I would absolutely not be asking this boy to the dance.

Then today at school this boy came up to me and thanked me for inviting him to be my date for the big dance.

Unfortunately, when this guy was so happy about it I couldn’t tell him I wasn’t going with him because I felt sorry for him. Now I’m stuck going to a dance with a guy I barely know, and he doesn’t seem my type.

I’m really upset with my mom. She had no right interfering with my affairs. When she told me that I was making a big deal over nothing, I became livid.

Bridge can be tough, and if you have the ability to enjoy it anyway, you will find the game very rewarding.

Some deals are tougher than others. This one is well up the scale. You are West. You lead a trump against four hearts. When that dummy appears, how would you hope to collect four tricks?

North’s three-heart response was a game-invitational limit raise.

Duplicate players these days (sensibly) treat a jump raise in competition as pre-emptive: four-card support but a weak hand.

With at least game-invitational values, they cue-bid the overcaller’s suit; here, bidding two spades.

Count the points. Dummy has 11, you have 13, and declarer had enough to go to game. Clearly, your partner, East, has few values.

He cannot hold the spade king or club ace, unless South has taken a gamble.

So, you should hope to take these four tricks: two spades, one diamond and one club. But to get those spade winners, you might need partner to lead the suit through declarer.

South draws trumps and plays a diamond. Rise with your ace and exit safely with a diamond.

Declarer will take his tricks there and play a club to his ace.

You must be ready – sacrifice the king under the ace. Then East will get in for the lethal spade shift.

Keep the club king in your hand and you will be endplayed, forced to lead a spade or concede a ruffand-sluff.
