Surface gives locals of all abilities a chance to play PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Felkamp When the Batavia Park District begins a park build or renovation, staff consults with the neighbors of that park for input. It’s important to know what the users will be looking for in a park and playground.

In 2006, the district began the design of the South Mill Creek Community Park playground, and – as usual – the neighbors were consulted. But this particular park had a special set of neighbors that were brought in on the process.

Marklund is a nonprofit organization that serves infants, children, teens and adults with serious and profound developmental disabilities and special health care needs. Its Geneva location is just west of South Mill Creek Community Park. The district knew it was essential to bring in representatives from Marklund, as well as from the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association, which is a sister organization of the district.

“When we began designing the park, we brought in staff from Marklund and FVSRA to help us understand the kind of

play elements that would work best in an accessible playground,” said Jim Eby, capital projects manager for the Batavia Park District.

The park opened in 2007 and has been a tremendous asset for the neighborhood, as well as the residents of Marklund.

“We’ve been thrilled to have the park there and to have access for our clients,” said Vicki Reyes, certified occupational therapy aide for Marklund. “We have also been incredibly happy with how the Batavia Park District has involved us throughout the process.”

And just this year, the park received a new amenity that will allow even more patrons the opportunity to experience the playground.

A rubber safety surface was installed that will allow for better access for anyone with mobility challenges.

The material is able to withstand heavy use and weather conditions better than the typical playground surface.

While the surface may feel hard, it meets the national fall criteria, which means the surface will absorb the impact and reduce the chance of injury to a child.

“Utilizing the safety surface allows us to look beyond disability to focus on being inclusive,” said Mike

Fabyan lighthouse temporarily removed for restoration

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When work crews from the Kane County Forest Preserve removed the top of the lighthouse in Fabyan Forest Preserve on Tuesday, it was just to see how it was made.

But once they took it off, it was apparent the rest could not remain, forest preserve spokeswoman Laurie Metanchuk said.

“It was not a planned removal,” Metanchuk said.

“But once the top was removed, they were not comfortable leaving it, as it was not safe.”

Metanchuk said the lighthouse likely was built between 1912 and 1917, so after more than a century of braving the elements, it was in need of repair, with cracks in various spots. It appeared to be leaning.

the former structure’s appearance and history, Metanchuk said.

Director of Planning and Development Jerry Culp said the restoration of the light-

house was part of planned improvements to Fabyan Forest Preserve, 1925 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

“It’s a solid concrete structure, about 28 feet high,” Culp said. “We’ll have our architects look at it and see how to rebuild it. We are taking pictures to document how it’s built.”

Architects will figure out how much it will cost to rebuild the lighthouse over the winter, with plans to have it rebuilt next spring, he said.

A temporary sign is posted about the restoration project.

As to why Col. George Fabyan – for whom the forest preserve is named – would have built a lighthouse on the Fox River is anybody’s guess, Metanchuk said.

“Col. Fabyan was eccentric – building a bear cage and Japanese gardens and a windmill – so the lighthouse is probably the least unusual,” Metanchuk said.

Hotel damages in St. Charles lead to charges for Roselle man

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Roselle man faces criminal charges on accusations he vandalized a hotel on the city’s east side, according to a St. Charles police report.

Nicholas David Bednar, 29, of the 400 block of Oxford Court, was charged Saturday with two counts of criminal damage to property after police were dispatched to the Hilton Garden Inn, 4070 E. Main St., about 1:40 a.m.

Police initially responded to a report of a fire extinguisher that was thrown through a window but discovered more damage as they walked the premises, police reported.

A staff room door reportedly was propped open with a metal food cart. After entering the doorway, police reported seeing broken bottles of ketchup, Tabasco sauce and

hot sauce on the ground, as well as an overturned table, a broken cabinet door and an open refrigerator.

Walking toward the back of a hallway, police found a metal chair overturned and broken glass on the floor from the glass door of a Coca-Cola cooler, police reported.

Bednar reportedly was found in a break room carrying a six pack containing five bot- Nicholas tles of non-al- David Bednar coholic beer; the sixth bottle was on the top of a refrigerator.

He couldn’t tell police where he was or why he was there, nor could he remember causing damage, police reported. Bednar appeared to have fire extinguisher dust on his pants and shoes, blades of

grass on his face and blood on his shirt, police reported, noting he was taken to the police department.

As an officer stayed at the scene to take photographs, a hotel guest reported that a window of his Mazda 3 was damaged.

While checking the car, police reportedly saw a door that had been propped open to a training center that connects to the hotel.

More damage was found in that area. A chair appeared to have been thrown through a window; wires for a wireless system were ripped out; a large picture had been taken off the wall; a fire extinguisher was missing and two had been discharged; computer monitors were overturned; and computer towers and a keyboard were broken, police reported.

The estimated value of the broken windows and the cool-

er’s glass door totaled $2,000, police reported. Damage to the HVAC system because of the fire extinguisher dust was unknown, police said.

Some in Elburn fire district facing question about whether to join Fox River and Countryside

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Nearly four years ago, the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District – then known as the St. Charles Countryside Fire Protection District – prompted concerns among residents when it announced it would end its longtime contract with the city of St. Charles.

The 2011 opening of Station No. 1 along Route 64 in Campton Hills changed things, as residents between downtown St. Charles and Elburn suddenly had fire service closer to them, said Jim Gaffney, Fox River and Countryside board president.

“We’ve really focused on developing a professional department and a professional workforce,” Chief Greg Benson said.

Now, the fire district is facing a different situation than it did in 2010: some residents of a neighboring district – the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District – want to join Fox River and Countryside.

“The fire district has proven itself,” Gaffney said.

On Nov. 4, voters in the proposed disconnection area – which is bound by LaFox Road to the east, Anderson Road to the west, Campton Hills Road to the south and Empire Road to the north – will decide whether to make the switch.

“We’re willing to assume that responsibility if the constituents want to go in that direction,” Fox River and Coun-

Meanwhile, Elburn Fire Chief Kelly Callaghan last week asked the Elburn Village Board for support in opposing the referendum question.

“It’s ours,” he said of the territory. “We’ve been taking care of that property since the beginning of our department.”

The disconnection could cost the district 10 percent of its land and 20 percent of its value, Callaghan said.

“That’s a huge chunk of our budget,” he said. “Imagine if you lost a fifth of your income.”

The Elburn district serves about 23,000 people and covers about 75 square miles, including Elburn, Lily Lake, Virgil, Campton Hills and the Mill Creek community.

According to its website, Elburn responded to 1,563 calls in 2012, and fire officials have said the number of calls have increased this year.

Fox River and Countryside spans 38 square miles in Kane and DuPage counties. It has a residential base of about 25,000 people in such townships as St. Charles, Campton and Wayne. Benson said it responded to about 1,250 calls last year.

Gaffney said the disconnect would benefit Fox River and Countryside financially because those residents would become part of its tax structure.

He noted those in Fox River and Countryside pay less for fire services than those served by Elburn. Kane County Clerk documents show Fox River and Countryside’s 2013 tax rate was 0.26632 for a total extension of about $2.2 million compared to Elburn’s rate of 0.786239 for a total extension of about $5.8 million.

“Ours is a third of theirs,” Gaffney said of the rates.

Fox River and Countryside has accrued about $4.2 million

in debt, which Gaffney said will be paid back over 15 to 20 years, like a house. About $2 million went toward such start-up costs as Station No. 1 and equipment, he said, and about $2.2 million is from the construction of Station No. 3, which was dedicated last week.

Callaghan said Elburn doesn’t carry debt.

While both fire districts currently have two stations – Elburn is building a replacement on Route 38 for its station on East North Street – both have plans to add a third.

On Oct. 1, Callaghan said, Elburn will begin operating a station with an advanced

life-support engine at a rental property in Lily Lake. ALS engines carry fire equipment, as well as the same equipment ambulances carry – it just can’t transport patients, he said.

“We’re constantly trying to improve the services we can provide,” Callaghan said.

Fox River and Countryside has acquired land at Bolcum and Crane roads in St. Charles Township for Station No. 2.

Although a definite timeline hasn’t been set for construction, Jeglum said it will happen.

“It’s amazing,” he said of the district’s progress, “and we’re not done.”

Batavia School Board approves $85 million budget

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 is projecting a $810,339 surplus in its budget for next year.

Batavia School Board members on Tuesday unanimously approved the 2014-15 budget.

Including both operating and non-operating funds, the total district budget

shows projected revenues of $86,151,936, offset by expenses of $85,341,597, leaving a surplus of $810,339.

Batavia School Board member Jon Gaspar voiced frustration in the current funding formula for school districts, calling it a “lopsided formula.”

“I want to capture what we can by law and keep taxes at an even level,” Gaspar said.

As proposed, the budget

shows $76 million in operating revenues, an increase of $3.5 million from last year.

Major revenue changes include an increase of $2.3 million in property taxes, that Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn said is largely from the expiration of Aurora’s tax increment financing district No. 2, which includes the Chicago Premium Outlets mall in Aurora and significant industrial

properties in the Interstate 88 corridor.

The district also is expected to receive an increase of $300,000 in general state aid this year because of a switch in the foundation formula for one year, Monn said.

The budget includes $43.5 million in salaries in the district’s education fund, an increase of $1.8 million from last year. Batavia School Board members recently approved a

new three-year contract with the Batavia Education Association, the union that represents Batavia School District 101’s teachers.

As part of the agreement, Batavia teachers will receive a 3.72 percent salary increase in the first year of the contract and projected increases of 2.25 percent in the second year and a 1.6 percent increase in the third year based on the consumer price index.

Sharing veterans’ stories

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – After reading a U.S. Marine’s book about his experience on the USS Indianapolis, Elburn teenager Ellie Rutan said she was inspired to contact the author.

Rutan, 14, said she was moved by his words, his faith and his courage as he wrote about the ship that was torpedoed during World War II. She went to the website of the author, Edgar Harrell, and found a phone number and called it. A bit later, the teen said she was surprised to get a call back from Harrell. It was the beginning of a friendship and a project.

She is helping to bring Harrell, the author of “Out of the Depths,” to an appearance at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at College Church, 332 E. Seminary Ave., Wheaton. In addition to that, Rutan launched a project, “Legacy of our Fathers,” in which she is talking to World War II vet-

could take place.

Rutan said she appreciates what people have done for her, and she hopes one day to turn her work into a movie or documentary.

“It is an experience I will never forget,” she said.

Rutan is home schooled.

Her father, Bob, said his daughter always has had a passion for senior citizens.

He said he once told her a quote, “when an older person dies, a library is lost,” and he said she has really taken that to heart. He said he typically will do the video on his daughter’s interviews, and he said since she is home schooled, she is able to be more flexible with her meetings and the work she can do on the project.

“It’s the desire to honor these men who have served faithfully, but now live in a generation [that] may not recognize or understand the sacrifices made and the freedoms that they have now,” he said.

The teen’s efforts have been noticed by leaders of local veterans groups. Dan Clark, commander of the Geneva American Legion, said he was impressed with her composure and knowledge.

“She seemed more like a 20-year-old and not a 14-yearold,” he said.

American Legion, said he was “awestruck” by her efforts and added, “I can’t support this little girl enough.”

Kastning said it was an important project, saying there is great value in talking to World War II veterans. As they are getting older, the opportunity soon might be gone.

“Time is ticking away,” Kastning said.

Juvenile removed, knife recovered during St. Charles East homecoming game

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A juvenile was removed Friday from attending the St. Charles East High School homecoming football game after an incident in which a knife was recovered, according to St. Charles police.

The incident occurred at 9

p.m. Friday, and no one was injured, wrote Lisa Blackwell, St. Charles police spokeswoman, in separate emails.

There is also a pending unlawful possession of cannabis charge in connection to the incident, Blackwell wrote.

Blackwell said she could not provide further details because the incident involved juveniles and that the case

still was open as of Tuesday afternoon.

Don Schlomann did not return a message seeking comment on the incident.

St. Charles East lost, 40-7, against Batavia during the football game.

The Secret Service can’t say what exactly went wrong Friday to allow an intruder to get through the front door of the White House. A review into the unprecedented security breach is underway. The lack of understanding, however, hasn’t stopped the Secret Service from floating the notion – let’s hope it stays just that – of pushing visitors even further back from the perimeter of the president’s home.

Surely there is a way to secure the safety of the first family without closing more streets and fencing off more sidewalks. It is not just the convenience of D.C. residents and visitors that is at stake. It is the character of American government – still meant, the last time we checked, to be of, by and for the people.

In Friday night’s incident, a man armed with a knife vaulted the fence on Pennsylvania Avenue NW and made it through the unlocked doors of the North Portico. This has embarrassed the Secret Service, as it should, and raised some obvious questions. Dogs on site are trained to stop intruders; why weren’t they released? Shouldn’t the doors have been locked as soon as an alarm signaled a breach of the fence? Were uniformed officers paying attention?

We have a lot of sympathy for the people charged with protecting the nation’s leaders. They are expected to be effective but invisible. If they do their stressful job right, they go, for the most part, unthanked. When there is a mishap, everyone is ready with advice. In this latest episode, for example, officers judged the intruder – a veteran said by his family to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder – to be not armed or carrying explosives, so they did not use lethal force. Had they made a different decision, we and many others today might be faulting their trigger-happiness.

Given these pressures, the Secret Service always will push for the most restrictive security measures. The District of Columbia has learned the consequences of this the hard way, as Pennsylvania Avenue and E Street NW have been closed to traffic and once-public spaces have become private parking lots. Now officials are raising the possibility of excluding the public even more – keeping people off the sidewalks near the White House, creating additional barriers, establishing new checkpoints further back. These are “notional at this point,” one official told The Post’s Carol D. Leonnig. But unless President Barack Obama and Congress draw a line, the notional could all too soon become real.

Officials must get to the bottom of Friday’s breach and assess the need for additional safeguards. Are a sufficient number of officers deployed? Should the fence be higher?

What about locking the White House door?

But making more of Washington off-limits should itself be off-limits. People come to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. not only to see a part of history, but also to express their First Amendment rights. Washington cannot be allowed to become any more of an armed camp.

It would be a disappointment to the League if Mr. Hultgren’s failure to respond to these requests in a timely fashion prevents the scheduling of a candidate forum.

More importantly, it would be an even greater loss to the citizens of the 14th Congressional District if they did not have an opportunity

to listen to the positions and ideas of both Mr. Hultgren and his opponent, Dennis Anderson, before they cast their votes on Nov. 4.

Babica named new Geneva public works boss

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Richard Babica is starting his duties as the new Geneva public works director, officials said.

Babica, 45, had previously worked as the public works director of West Dundee for 10 years, altogether bringing 22 years of experience to Geneva, Richard officials said.

Babica F o r m e r director Dan Dinges resigned in May after 15 years.

“We are all looking forward to the opportunity to work with Rich and the expertise that he brings to our organization,” City Administrator Mary McKittrick said. “His professional experience as a public works director in a neighboring municipality and his advanced educational background will benefit our citizens and our entire community. We are fortunate to have him join our team.”

McKittrick said about a dozen applicants vied for the position, and after it was reduced to three finalists, all agreed Babica was the best candidate for the position.

“An appointed official goes through a recruitment process,” McKittrick said. “He was interviewed by department heads in public works – the superintendents of streets, electric, water and engineering. All of participants scored the different applicants and gave their recommendations to me, and then [the] mayor and I met with the finalists. ...

“Batavia’s a nice team, but it’s pretty clear that Ian’s the guy that makes their team go,” Geneva coach Ryan Estabrook said. “The first goal, we gave him way too much space, and there was no chance our keeper was going to save that first one. It was a bullet that was well-placed, and that’s on our team defense.

“The second one was another breakdown defensively but Ian had to do a lot more work on that one, and I don’t know that many players [who] finish that as easily as he does. He just makes it look very simple with the way he plays the game. We knew that coming in, so shame on us for not doing a better job defensively.”

The Duquesne recruit had a prime chance to complete a hat trick in the second half but Turnbull exacted a measure of revenge, turning back Larson’s penalty kick, and Kevin Collins’ follow-up attempt caromed off the crossbar.

“He had a great save,” Larson said. “He’s a big guy, so he covers a lot of the goal. He read me pretty well. Props to him, he made a great save.”

Turnbull’s penalty kick stop kept Geneva (5-3-1, 2-21 Upstate Eight Conference River) within 2-1 after the Vi-

kings narrowed the deficit on Jason Lagger’s goal with 27:45 to play in the second half.

Estabrook said Lagger’s far-post score off a Drew Klaus ball was reminiscent of a missed opportunity for the Vikings during a recent match against West Chicago.

“Jason, he’s a good listener, he’s a good student of the game, and he got on the end of that one today so that’s encouraging when guys show the ability to learn from previous games,” Estabrook said.

with 2:55 left in the match was disallowed for offsides.

Despite the victory, Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco’s postgame speech was a challenge for the Bulldogs (91-1, 5-0 UEC River) to ward off complacency.

“At times being the coach or the leader you’ve got to see the big picture, and you’ve got to push them toward that to be great,” Gianfrancesco said.

“It’s easy to get in a routine of all right, we’re up, we’ll sit back, or we’ve won several games and kind of take the pedal off the metal. We kind of saw that a little bit in the

second half.”

Larson, who has 11 goals on the season, acknowledged the Bulldogs are getting used to the spotlight after an attention-grabbing victory against St. Charles East last week.

“I think we just need to forget about the rankings and all the hype on us right now,” Larson said. “We just need to play our game like we did on the start of the season and focus on that.”

“This was a very frustrating game. We had been playing well for a 5-12 team,” Trippi-Payne said of the first game.

“You can’t miss seven serves and give them seven points in a seven point game. Serving and defense has been our strongsuit and then we come out here and commit a bunch of unforced errors.”

In the second game, Batavia (5-12, 2-2) held an early lead, 8-6.

Back-to-back kills by Emily Carroll and Krage knotted the score at 8.

Two Bulldog hitting errors and a net violation put North ahead, 11-8.

An Anna Clausen kill, one of her five for the night, pulled the

Bulldogs within 15-13 but they were unable to close the gap as the North Stars pulled away and scored their final point on a Batavia hitting error. ”Give credit to St. Charles North,” Trippi-Payne said. “We had several opportunities to go ahead in the second game and we couldn’t do it because they started doing some things just a little bit better.”

The North Stars’ front line combination of Claire Anderson (six kills, two assists) and Jaclyn Taylor (seven assists) also thwarted the Bulldogs’ scoring efforts with effective blocking.

“We always knew that [blocking] could be a strength of ours,” Hawkins said. “That’s part of the reason why our defense is getting stronger because we have such a big front row.”

“By the second game, we figured out their go-to hitter and the shots they liked to hit so we were getting a lot of good block touches,” Krage said.

Frankie Neari had four digs for the North Stars while teammate Taryn Dal Degan was credited with six assists. Kailey Grove had three kills for North.

Jancy Lundberg had five kills for the Bulldogs. Maddie Jaudon was credited with seven digs for Batavia.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North girls volleyball coach Lindsey Hawkins advised her players before Tuesday’s match not to take Batavia, which has been struggling this season, lightly.

In the early going of both games, true to Hawkins’ warning, the tenacious Bulldogs kept pace with the North Stars.

But in the end, North capitalized on Batavia’s unforced errors to win the Upstate Eight Conference River match in two games, 25-18, 25-15.

“I don’t know how [Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne] does it but they always seem to be scrappy and fighters,” Hawkins said. “That was the message to the girls at the beginning of the match, you cannot underestimate them because they will come out and they will fight.”

In first game, the lead seesawed between the two teams.

The North Stars went in front for good on the seventh lead change, 15-14, on a Batavia serving error. North widened its lead to 23-17 on an 8-3 run highlighted by three Daley Krage kills. The Northwestern-bound junior led all players with nine kills on the evening.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North girls tennis team knew what challenges it faced when the 2013 Upstate Eight Conference champs Geneva visited North on Tuesday.

The Stars lost to Geneva, 5-2, as Geneva swept the singles competition.

“We know that they have a good singles lineup,” North coach Eve Tubman said. “Geneva is always a good team …”

Geneva’s Kirby Einck defeated Kate Boeke, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles while Geneva sophomore Grace Krueger defeated North’s Kaitlyn Anderson at No. 2 singles by the same margin.

Elizabeth Prendergast’s 6-1, 6-0 victory over Maddie Morray rounded out the singles win for the Vikings.

“This was an important one for us,” said Geneva coach Maureen Weiler, “… this week is probably the week that’s going to make the difference [in conference].”

After the Vikings (8-4, 3-0 UEC) swept the singles, St. Charles North (2-1 UEC) responded by winning at No. 1 doubles with Brittany Rohrsen and Morgan Rerko (7-5, 4-6, 6-4) as well at No. 2 doubles with Emma Spellman and Lianne Anderson (6-4, 3-6, 7-4).

“It was a good match be-

cause, obviously, Geneva is really good,” Rohrsen said about her doubles win. “[Morgan] and I have played (together] since freshman year, we have been best friends and this year we’re going off and hopefully going to be moving on to play together senior year.”

After splitting the first two sets, Rohrsen and Rerko fell behind 3-0 in the third set. They were able to fight their way back for the win with great serving and timely scoring. They defeated Geneva’s Emma Hazel and Shannon Foster.

“They won the war today, but I feel like we kind of won the battle,” Tubman said after the doubles finished.

Geneva’s No. 3 doubles, Kayleigh Barnaba and Jaden Ciesielski, and No. 4 doubles, Therese Niedbala and Killian Tracey, both were victorious with scores of 7-5, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively.

“Jaden and I basically came in here thinking we could do the best we could do and we just did it and I’m really happy with how we played,” Barbaba said of their win.

None of the Geneva doubles pairs have played together before this year.

Upstate Eight Conference action continues with Geneva playing St. Charles East at home while St. Charles North plays Batavia on Thursday.

NOTEWORTHY St. Francis impresses new coach with ‘grit’ St. Francis carried a humble 3-4-3 record into Tuesday’s match against St. Rita, but first-year coach Kevin Ward mostly is satisfied with how his debut season is unfolding.

Ward said he anticipated much of his first season would be seeing “how guys would acclimate to our strategies and schemes,” and on that front, he detects progress.

Ward also praised the Spartans’ competitive spirit.

“I think the number one thing that comes to mind is just our sheer grit and tenacity,” Ward said. “Guys haven’t given up at this point, and that’s a good asset for us to have. I think as long as we kind of stay in that mode, some other things will kind of follow for us.”

Ward said players have been juggling various roles as he attempts to figure out what combination has the best chance to click. Even the team’s top couple of scorers, Nicholas Roehl and Joey Wood, are rotating between midfield and forward positions in the lineup.

“I’ve had guys pop in and out of all kinds of positions,” Ward said.

“I have guys who can play three different positions right now.”

Familiar foe St. Charles East and Marmion will clash Thursday in pool play of the St. Charles East Invitational. Cadets coach Ricky Del Toro said last week he’s looking forward to seeing how his team measures up against the powerhouse Saints.

Tuesday’s match against West Chicago marked St. Charles North’s second meeting with the Wildcats in a week’s time.

The North Stars met West Chicago – a new addition to the Upstate Eight Conference River Division this year – last week in Pepsico Invitational play, defeating the Wildcats, 3-2.

Road to state Postseason host assignments have been posted at IHSA.org, with St. Charles East slated to host a Class 3A regional. East,

Elk Grove, Schaumburg and Wheaton North each will host regionals as part of the Bartlett Sectional.

In Class 2A, Burlington Central and St. Francis are each regional sites, feeding into the Hampshire Sectional.

Regional semifinal play for teams in classes 2A and 3A is slated for Oct. 21 and 22.

During the summer, before I got injured, I would [be a] slot receiver and running back, but then once I got injured, I kind of took things on slowly. So what I did when I came back during the

The coaches tried to get me in Oswego and Glenbard North a little bit, but they really wanted me more for the conference games. … More for safety reasons is why they didn’t put me in a lot.

You know, really, we’re all smart; and off the field in the classroom we’re all doing great, and coaches make sure of that.

Nicole Hassels and Natalie Saeger each shot 5-over par rounds of 40 for Geneva while Reilly Krohe added a 41. The Vikings’ depth beyond that trio – Darby Lillibridge, Mary Clare Novak and Allyson Karas each shot 43 – accounted for the win.

What was the key to the big second half at East?

We didn’t really like our performance in the first half. It’s hard to get off the bus, I guess, in a way, but you can’t do that in the season. … That motivation to get after them when we get off the bus and really show them what Batavia football is about was really our motivation in the second half.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now The Fanning sisters, Dakota, 20, and Elle, 16, have been taking turns over the past decade, starring and costarring in all sorts of different films.

Dakota best displayed her chops in “War of the Worlds” and “The Runaways” (playing the wild Cherie Currie).

Elle really shone in “Ginger & Rosa” and, more recently, in “Maleficent.”

In a great case of coincidence, both Fannings have now voice acted in the wonderfully old-fashioned stop-motion animated films of Laika, the Oregon-based studio responsible for “Coraline” (2009) and “ParaNorman” (2012).

Dakota had the lead role in “Coraline,” and now Elle has a major part as the precocious Winnie in Laika’s “The Boxtrolls,” based on the novel “Here Be Monsters.”

Elle spoke a lot about the film – and a little bit about Dakota – at a recent interview in Los Angeles.

Ed Symkus: The character of Winnie, who keeps trying to get the attention of her oblivious, cheese-lov-

ing father, isn’t even in the book. She was created for the film. How would you describe her?

Elle Fanning: She’s a 9-yearold girl, and her dad is the mayor of Cheesebridge, where they live.

Obviously, because her dad’s the mayor, she’s kind of the elite. She can be spoiled at times. The audience will probably not want to like her in the beginning, because she’s definitely bratty. But you get to see her sensitive side come out as the movie progresses, and you realize that she just wants attention from her dad, because he is too distracted with cheese.

I do think that Winnie can be overdramatic, and that she sometimes takes things a little too far. But I love her sassiness, and it was fun for me to do.

Symkus: Was it very difficult to handle the posh British accent?

Fanning: I had done the British accent twice before so I’m comfortable with the rhythm of it. But still, you’re always intimidated, because you don’t want to let down or insult anyone who really has that accent.

I worked with a dialect

coach to perfect it and get it right, and it was really helpful in finding Winnie’s voice.

At our first voice session, we kind of played around to find the right tone. There were a couple of earlier scripts, and in the beginning, Winnie was even more snooty and you really didn’t like her.

Then when we went in and found her voice, we thought, maybe we can make her a little more likeable, or just feisty but not so mean-spirited. That’s how we found our way in.

Symkus: How did you prepare for an animation role?

Fanning: It’s still a character, so I still prepare the same way – just imagining that I was this girl. When I go in, I always take my shoes off in the booth. And I felt that because Winnie was so energized, I never sat down.

At first I was more conscious of my face, but then I realized it doesn’t matter what you look like, and I could really exaggerate. You could overdo it, and when you’re acting for animators, more is great.

When you’re doing live action, more is overacting

and that’s not what you want.

You want more subtlety.

Symkus: Did you talk to Dakota about working on “Coraline” before you took on this role?

Fanning: I knew about Laika and stop-motion from when she was doing that. I went with her [to the studio] and looked at all the “Coraline” sets.

About three years ago they asked me to be part of “The Boxtrolls,” and I wanted to do it right away, because I know how unbelievable their world is and what they do.

But Dakota and I don’t really talk about films; it’s like an off-limit area. So, she didn’t give me any advice on it, but she was happy that I was doing it.

She has her Coraline statue, and I have my Winnie statue.

Symkus: The film is really all about cheese. Do you have a favorite cheese?

Fanning: I do. I love Verata goat cheese. You can’t go wrong with cheddar cheese, either. I love cheese.

This is causing a tremendous amount of stress on us, and neither of us knows how to handle it or what to do. DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips before you waste any more of her time or yours. You may be crazy about Dawn, but your first responsibility must be to your children, and she has made it clear how she feels about them.

You may be phenomenal as a couple, but there are more people involved than just the two of you. She needs to find someone who has no encumbrances, and you need to find a lady who has a greater capacity for love than Dawn appears to be capable of.

Dear Abby: I often eat out with friends when we travel and when we’re here at home. Some of them bring their own canned drinks or powdered drink mix to add to water served by the restaurant. I have an uneasy feel-

ing about this. I don’t think it is right to take my own drink into an eating establishment.

I have never said anything negative about it, but I haven’t joined in the practice. Is my discomfort MY problem? – Testy Southern Belle Dear Belle: What I think about it is less important than what the restaurant does, and not knowing the reason your friends behave this way, I am hesitant to judge them. I’m not sure what kind of canned or powdered drink your friends are bringing, but if they are on some kind of restricted diet, then it’s what they need to do for a while. If the restaurant objected, the manager would either tell your friends not to do it anymore or institute a charge to make up for the lost income.

New drugs for atrial fibrillation have upside, downside Dear Doctor K: I’ve been taking warfarin without any problems for years to treat atrial fibrillation.

Now my doctor wants me to switch to a different medicine. Should I? Dear Reader: Atrial fibrillation (aFib) is a rapid quivering in your heart’s upper chambers, or atria.

Instead of vigorously pumping blood down into the lower chambers (the ventricles), the quivering upper chambers let blood pool inside them. As blood sits, it can form clots. If a clot gets into the bloodstream and blocks a vessel supplying your brain, it can cause a stroke. Therefore, a person with aFib needs anticoagulant (anti-clotting) drugs.

Until a few years ago, the only option was a drug called warfarin (Coumadin). Warfarin works well, but the dosing is tricky. As a result, anyone taking warfarin must have regular blood tests to make sure the dose is correct. Too weak a dose can increase the risk of blood clots; too strong a dose can increase the risk of bleeding.

To make matters more complicated, the body doesn’t always react the same way to warfarin.

One month the dose may be just right. But the next month, the dose is either not strong enough or is too strong.

Over the past few years, new

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff anticoagulant drugs have become available. The new drugs available in the U.S. include dabigatran (Pradaxa), rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and apixaban (Eliquis).

But, as you asked, if you’re doing well on warfarin, is there any reason to switch? My colleague Dr. Christian Ruff is a cardiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He says yes, there is.

The new drugs are just as effective as warfarin, but safer. Compared with warfarin, they are only half as likely to cause bleeding in the brain. The new drugs also don’t require regular blood tests, and they have fewer interactions with other drugs and foods.

But the new medications do have some downsides. For one thing, they wear off quickly. So if you miss a dose, your clot risk rises. (Warfarin is long-acting, so missing a dose or two is less risky.)

And when the newer drugs cause bleeding, it is harder to stop than bleeding caused by warfarin.

The new medications are still new. We don’t have information

about possible side-effects that could develop with long-term use.

Also, the new drugs are more expensive than warfarin, and for some patients, that can be a disincentive to take them.

Also, the new drugs need to be taken twice a day, whereas warfarin is taken just once a day. Some people have trouble remembering to take medicines more than once a day. Not taking the new medicines exactly as directed – for this reason, or because they’re expensive – can increase the risk of clots.

So, when I have a patient on warfarin whose dose has proved to be very stable, and who has not had any adverse effects despite taking it for many years, I think twice about switching to the new medicines – even though I agree with Dr. Ruff that they do have some clear advantages. Call me old-fashioned, but I’m waiting for more information about the possible adverse effects of the new drugs before recommending them to every person who needs an anti-clotting drug.

She’s everything a guy could want Dr. Wallace: About a month ago, I met a girl at a party and fell “head over heels” in love with her. We are both 19 and have good jobs. We have been inseparable ever since we met. I see her five evenings a week, and when we don’t see each other, we talk on the phone. We are looking at choosing between two fits, one balanced, in which the partners each have the same number of cards in that suit, and one unbalanced, in which one partner holds more cards than his partner.

In general, the balanced suit will make the better trump choice. But what happens in a game-going deal when that is in a minor and the unbalanced is in a major?

Then usually you select the major-suit fit because you need one fewer trick to collect the game bonus.

In this deal, when North responded two hearts, a transfer bid showing at least five spades and any point-count, South might have rebid three spades, a superaccept, to indicate a good hand with four-card spade support and a doubleton somewhere. Then, when North rebid a natural and game-forcing three clubs, South was in a quandary. If North was thinking about a slam, clubs rated to be the better trump suit. But if North was not that ambitious, four spades would probably be preferable.

Note that five clubs would have gone down two in jig time after East led the heart queen.

Against four spades, West, with an unenviable lead, chose a trump. Declarer won, drew trumps, cashed all of the clubs ending in the dummy, and played a diamond. West took that trick and led his second diamond winner. What did South do?

He calmly discarded a heart from the dummy, leaving West endplayed to open up hearts or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

Elburn Lions Club car show set for Oct. 5

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The 21st Annual Fall Classic Elburn Lions All Wheel car show on Oct. 5 is a great event for a great cause, said Jeff Miller, one of the event’s organizers.

“This show is giving back to the community,” Miller said on Tuesday.

Proceeds raised from the show will go toward veterans organizations the Wounded Warrior Project and VietNow. The show begins at 8 a.m.

Oct. 5 and will last until 4 p.m. at Lions Park, 500 Filmore St., Elburn.

Admission to the show is free, but those entering cars in the actual show pay $15 at the gate or $12 if they preregister, Miller said.

More than 300 cars and motorcycles participated in the show’s 2013 outing, according to the Elburn Lions website. A total of 41 different car classes will be represented at the show, but the overall number of cars that actually appear will depend on the weather, Miller said.

“We’re hoping to have 400 cars on a bright, sunny day,” he said.

Attendees also should bring their appetites to the show – doughnuts and coffee will be served in the morning, followed by steaks, hot dogs and bratwurst later in

In an effort to get more children involved in the show, a pumpkin decorating contest will be held for the second year in a row. Attendees can decorate their pumpkins anytime before the show and then bring their finished work to the event for judging.
