Batavia native gets involved Stacie Barnett: ‘We live in a great community. Be a part of it.’

Stacie Barnett joined the Batavia United Way Board and was nominated as secretary of the board in May. She also has served in the Navy and as member relations specialist at the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

She recently became an assistant buyer at Aldi Corporation. “She is personally and professionally engaged in making Batavia a better place through her hands-on approach,” stated her Best Under 40 nominator, Holly Deitchman.

By SHONDA DUDLICEK editorial@kcchronicle.com Stacie Barnett started down the path to community involvement when a United Way executive director pulled her aside after a Batavia Women in Business meeting and asked her to help out.

“It was that simple. Once you get a reputation in Batavia for nonprofits, word spreads quickly,” Barnett said.

Community involvement is important to Barnett, 35, and her son, P.J., 15, a sophomore at Batavia High School.

“Absolutely! It’s one thing to tell your kids how to participate and give back to the community. By doing, you put your money where your mouth is,” she said.

Barnett started working with the Batavia United Way four years ago, volunteering with its Adopt a Family program. She is a recipient of the Kane County Chronicle’s Best Under 40 honor.

“No matter how many families the schools give us, we find someone to help to make sure everyone has a good Christmas,” she said of the Adopt a Family program.

She joined the Batavia United Way Board and was nominated as secretary in May. Barnett also works with Batavia MainStreet, which focuses on revitalizing downtown Batavia, and Art in Your

With half-day kindergarten in Batavia, it’s a struggle for some families, she said.

reers, starting in the Navy after high school. She was a nuclear machinist mate and worked on several of the nuclear-powered ships. Not surprisingly, she was one of only two women in her class, she said.

“They were great guys,” she said. “I’m still friends with many of my 25 big brothers. They made sure no one would mess with us … or even talk to us.”

Being in the Navy taught her how to pay attention to detail.

“It was not a skill of mine before, but they teach you the dangers of not paying attention,” she said. “I learned to be meticulous and organized at every job since then. That was the one thing I carried with me.”

Like her son and mother, Barnett attended Batavia

High School. She was born and raised in Batavia, and she and P.J. live in her childhood home built by her parents.

“We have very deep roots here,” she said.

Barnett was nominated for the Best Under 40 award by Holly Deitchman, executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

“Stacie’s a great gal, very bubbly,” Deitchman said.

“Once you spend time with her, you don’t want to let her go.”

Barnett said getting involved is easy.

“It’s the right thing to do,” she said. “If you have a couple of free hours, you’re so lucky, so do something with it. We live in a great community. Be a part of it, you’ll feel good.

Fox Valley lawyer enjoys helping others Roman Seckel ‘compassionate,’ ‘a good listener’

By TAMMY SWANSON editorial@kcchronicle.com Roman Seckel will likely never be on an episode of “Suits” or “Boston Legal.”

Seckel, an attorney for Drendel & Jansons Law Group based in Batavia and Aurora, does not fit the profile of the typical lawyer found on such TV shows.

“He doesn’t fit the stereotype of a brash, arrogant attorney,” said Kevin Drendel, owner and attorney for Drendel & Jansons Law Group.

Drendel nominated Seckel for a Kane County Chronicle Best Under 40 award.

“From my perspective, these types of brash attorneys that you see on the TV are actually not all that effective in life,” Drendel said. “[Roman] is compassionate.

He is a good listener.”

Being empathetic to his clients – as well as setting realistic expectations – are the keys to Seckel’s success.

“One thing I like to think separates myself is I like to listen to clients and their actual needs,” he said. “I let them tell their story first. I want to give them a realistic vision of what they are looking at, in terms of what they can accomplish in the court system or by other legal means, and accomplish their goals.”

Seckel graduated in 2002 as a political science major from St. Norbert College.

The 36-year-old received the Rev. Robert Cornell Excellence in Political Science Award. A college professor recommended he go to law school. And, after graduating cum laude in 2005 from The John Marshall Law School, he wanted to concentrate in family law, as

well as do some government work.

Seckel is a member of the Kane County Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association and the Wisconsin Bar Association. He won the Lincoln Award in 2007 for legal writing from the Illinois State Bar Association.

In 2010, the Kane County Bar Association named him Outstanding New Lawyer.

“He’s been a pretty strong leader of the local bar association from the very beginning of practicing law,” Drendel said. “He has been published numerous times in the Illinois Bar Journal.”

His family is very important to him. Married to his wife for more than 10 years, they have two children, ages

8 and 6, with a third due in November.

“They [family] keeps me grounded,” Seckel said. “My wife has been very supportive of my career and taking some extra responsibilities at home to allow me to do things ... in my career and outside in the community, as well.”

His job does allow him to have quality time with his wife and children. His hobbies include running, spending time with his family, hiking and camping.

“My job is flexible, if I need to take off and coach my son’s baseball team, and I can teach my kids’ religious education classes,” he said. “If I need to, I can go home early if they are sick.”

According to his Best Under 40 nominator, Kevin Drendel, Roman Seckel “quietly goes about his business, always willing to help, always willing to step into a leadership position.” Roman is an attorney for Drendel & Jansons Law Group, which has offices in Batavia and Aurora. He also is a director with the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

Seckel has been active in the community, working with the Knights of Columbus through the St. Charles council. He also supports a St. John Neumann Catholic Church ministry though a victims of domestic violence program.

“He has been a strong advocate of providing pro bono care to people who can’t afford it,” Drendel said.

“He certainly fits the bill of someone who has been a leader in the Fox Valley under the age of 40.”

COVER STORY ComEd’s Grand Prairie Gateway project moves forward

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com The Grand Prairie Gateway – a ComEd project that received strong opposition from some residents – is becoming a reality, as the utility company has installed transmission towers between Plato Center and Elgin.

The Illinois Commerce Commission approved the high-voltage transmission line in October 2014. The project is expected to span nearly 60 miles between the ComEd substation near Byron in Ogle County to the substation near Wayne, which is just east of the Kane County line.

As of Thursday, 32 of 34 transmission towers had been installed along the more than 4-mile distance between Muirhead Road, which is near Plato Center and Randall Road, ComEd spokesman David O’Dowd wrote in an email.

O’Dowd wrote. He said that segment is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016.

Also in late October, he wrote, work is anticipated to begin on the western part of the project in Ogle County.

“None of these segments will be energized until the entire project is complete in 2017,” O’Dowd wrote. “This schedule is based upon currently known information and it may change as conditions dictate.”

The company has said the new power lines are needed to alleviate congestion in the power grid in northern Illinois and asserts on its website that customers will have “immediate” savings.

Many living along the project’s route voiced opposition before the ICC’s decision. Concerns included the effects on property values and health.

The ICC, however, determined it would allow greater access to renewable energy west of Illinois, thus enhancing competition in the electricity markets.

Geneva aldermen pass on meeting with Batavia aldermen vote, 13-1, business owners on downtown district to change comprehensive plan

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva aldermen decided against hosting a community meeting with business and property owners downtown to discuss creating a business district.

At a special Committee of the Whole meeting Monday, aldermen voted, 8-2, against hosting the meeting, after more than an hour of debate over creating a business district and increasing its sales tax by .25 percent to pay for improvements.

Fifth ward Alderman Craig Maladra and 1st Ward Alderman Tara Burghart voted in favor of hosting such a meeting.

Economic Development Director Cathleen Tymoszenko said if aldermen would not

consider the .25 percent sales tax increase, “Now would be a time to stop. … The staff recommendation was to only move forward if the City Council had the desire to institute a tax. Without the tax, there is no reason for the district.”

But as to a meeting with the business community about creating a district and instituting a tax, Tymoszenko said there would be just fewer than 400 people to invite to the meeting – taking out businesses that don’t have a sales tax and multiple owners of properties.

Still, some aldermen, such as 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra, suggested establishing the business district separately from raising the sales tax.

“Perhaps now is not the

right time to do that,” Maladra said of raising the sales tax.

But 4th Ward Alderman Jim Radecki said he questioned what city officials thought they might accomplish with a meeting.

“We need to make a decision and quit kicking the can down the road,” Radecki said.

“Do we have an appetite for a tax in the business district, or do we not?”

Last year, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to the city stating its opposition to a sales tax increase, officials said.

Scott Lebin, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, said the issue is in competition with other towns and businesses on Randall Road that have a lower sales tax.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – All but one member of the Batavia City Council on Monday voted to amend the city’s comprehensive plan. Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff was the only person who voted against the changes, which would establish a West Town Focus Area Plan.

The amendments to the plan are prompted by the city’s consideration of a tax increment financing district for the West Town area.

On Tuesday, the majority of the aldermen, meeting as the Committee of the Whole, agreed to the change the city Land Use Map to classify the former Shady Hill Gardens site and properties proposed as residential to its north at 3.5 to 5

units to the acre.

The majority of alderman also agreed to classify the properties north of those fronting the 600 to 700 block of Main Street up to First Street as Neighborhood Commercial/ Mixed Use, consistent with the Main Street frontage, according to a city memo. Wolff on Monday said he voted against the comprehensive plan changes because he did not agree with the Neighborhood Commercial/Mixed Use proposal.

“I think that should be residential,” Wolff said after the meeting.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said the comprehensive plan changes will be a “win-win” for residents and businesses alike.

“I think this is a good opportunity to revitalize this area,” O’Brien said.

Gillerlain declined to identify the student out of respect for the student’s family.

Students at the school Monday wrote notes to the

deceased student’s family, Gillerlain said.

The district crisis team, which includes district counselors, social workers, psychologists and other support personnel, was activated to address the needs of students and staff, Gillerlain said.

Gillerlain said as of Monday afternoon, there was no information available on possible funeral arrangements for the student.

ST. CHARLES – The debate about video gaming will continue in St. Charles, as the City Council on Monday failed to support a motion to deny a proposed ordinance on the issue.

Aldermen are expected to resume discussion at the Oct. 5 Government Operations Committee meeting. First Ward alderman Dan Stellato, who chairs the committee, requested to make it the only item on the agenda so there will be ample time for deliberations.

Mayor Ray Rogina encouraged citizens with opinions on video gaming to attend that meeting, because it will give them “a golden opportunity” to speak up.

Only two people addressed the council after Monday’s vote.

Mark Hoffman of Mark’s Second Street Tavern urged aldermen to talk with bar owners, who will be directly affected by the council’s decision.

“Please include that in your research,” he said.

Resident Michael Penny, who is against video gaming,

suggested the council survey the community rather than rely on anecdotes or the opinions from one group.

Fifth Ward alderman Ed Bessner outlined his concerns about video gaming, which included signs advertising the activity and the proposed sunset clause.

Discussion is continuing because the 10-member council was evenly split on a motion that – if supported – would have denied a proposed video gaming ordinance. Rogina broke the tie by voting no, thus denying the motion to deny the ordinance.

The wording of the motion required repeated clarification.

“If this motion fails, does this ordinance go into place?

The answer is, no,” Rogina said.

Later, in the moments before the vote, he again explained what a “yes” and “no” vote would mean.

“Is everybody clear on that?” he said.

With the item returning to committee, Stellato requested his colleagues be respectful of staff’s time and to keep their questions concise.

Batavia inducts 14 in first Hall of Honor

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A total of 14 men and women integral to Batavia each received a place Saturday in the Batavia Hall of Honor.

About 200 people attended the inaugural Batavia Public Schools Hall of Honor awards ceremony held in the Batavia Fine Arts Centre at Batavia High School.

The ceremony was preceded by the unveiling of the Hall of Honor showcase display Saturday in the main hallway at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St., Batavia.

The Hall of Honor was formed by the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence and Batavia School District 101 to highlight positive role models for students and honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the school district.

Honorees were in one of three categories – Batavia High School alumni, Batavia Public Schools staff members and Friends of Batavia Public Schools.

The deceased honorees and the honorees who

couldn’t attend, such as former State Rep. Tim Schmitz, were represented by friends or family members. The posthumous Hall of Honor recipients included Jim Hanson, Les Hodge, Marilyn Robinson and Gene Tyrer.

Pro basketball sideline reporter Craig Sager appeared in a prerecorded video to accept his award.

“I’m loyal to you, Batavia High, and I’ll be a Bulldog, a Battlin’ Bulldog, for life,” Sager said.

In the video, Sager spoke about how he went to Batavia High School at the same time as some of the other honorees, including former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson.

Anderson was able to attend Hall of Honor-related events in Batavia in the days leading up to the award ceremony and had his uncle, Gary Anderson, represent him at the ceremony.

He and Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer specifically thanked their parents for helping them succeed in life.

Also thanking their families were active volunteer Bob Dahlstrom; Lisa Palese, the district’s director of student services and homeless

liaison; and former Batavia boys basketball coach Jim Roberts.

He was born on December 18, 1926, in Martin, TN, the son of Carl R. and Ann Rebecca (Callison) McWherter. Alan shared 57 joyful years of marriage with the love of his life, Doris. He served his Country during WWII in The United States Army, and then again during The Korean War in The United States Air Force. Alan also served as a Captain in The Civil Air Patrol.

He worked in the banking industry.

Alan finished his career, as a Corporate Real Estate Leasing Manager for Citibank in Chicagoland, where he was a lifelong resident.

He was truly respected and loved as a Renaissance Man. Alan is survived by two sons, Carl (Deborah) McWherter of Batavia, IL, and James McWherter of Greensboro, NC; one daughter, Janet (Scott) Scharlow of Batavia, IL; six grandchildren, James (Rhi-

Robert “Bobby” Johnstone, 71, of Batavia, Illinois passed away peacefully Sunday morning, September 20, 2015.

Bobby, the only child of the Reverend Gilbert Johnstone, former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Batavia (now Faith Baptist Church) and the former Batavia Fire Department Chaplin and his mother Helen Johnstone, nee Hibert.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, but is survived by one Aunt, Ruth Johnstone, of Edinburgh, Scotland; along with several cousins also of Scotland. Bobby is also survived by his beloved Batavia Community which he loved and was always proud to be a part of.

This community included the congregation of the First Baptist Church of Batavia now known as Faith Baptist Church where he faithfully attended services throughout his entire life. Bob’s faithful attendance at Sunday School and church was a testament to his faith and example to others.

Bobby was one of the original trainees at the Valley Sheltered Workshop in Batavia of which his father was one of the founders.

He maintained an interest and connection to the workshop even after leaving the work force.

At an early age Bobby’s parents introduced him to Batavia Bulldog sports which set him on a lifelong love affair and journey with Batavia Basketball and football. Bob’s loyalty to his beloved Bulldogs was rewarded with a Bulldogs Letter Jacket (and many other pieces of Bulldog wear) that Bob proudly wore all of his life. Coach Jim Roberts, also a lifelong member of Bobby’s Batavia community, was instrumental in keeping Bobby in the athletic community and for this Bobby was so very thankful.

Bobby enjoyed his Saturday excursions to Batavia where he could be found at Foltos’ Tonsorial Parlor enjoying a cup of coffee, several rolls and a spirited conversation with the entire staff and its Saturday morning customers.

Bobby was welcomed week after week and all helped brighten his weekends for over 20 years.

After enjoying the fellowship provided he could then be found at Daddio’s Diner for breakfast, coffee and social interaction with the

In addition to Bobby’s Batavia community, in the last years of his life he was living at the North Aurora Care Center, who’s staff including nurses, nurses aids, social service staff and others provided for his needs each and every day of the year and made sure that he was ready and prepared to go out into the community each weekend.

Their tireless efforts contributed greatly to his happiness and well-being.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Eight-year-old Emily Maramba struggled to control her dog, a hound-retriever mix named Penny on Sunday as three judges determined just how alike the two were.

Her father, Bob Maramba, sat nearby, noting the family was having “a blast” at Anderson Animal Shelter’s inaugural Pets-a-Palooza.

The Elgin third-grader ultimately didn’t place in the owner and pooch lookalike contest, which was one of several activities held on the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve grounds in St. Charles Township.

Other activities included a parade, demonstrations, a talent show and a costume contest. Pet-related vendors also attended, providing various promotions and features.

Emergency Veterinary Services of St. Charles attracted attention by offering free puppy kisses by 1-year-old Gemma, a beagle-Labrador mix.

“Her tail’s going crazy,” owner Carrie Oliver said as her pooch dished out the licks.

“She loves it.”

What we’ll encounter on path to jobless future

By MICHAEL FERTIK and VIVEK WADHWA Special To The Washington Post In just two short decades or so, we’ll enter a jobless future.

Thanks to highly disruptive, advanced technologies, jobs – even industries – soon will vanish, becoming remnants of a distantly remembered past. Other positions will be more efficiently done by machines, eliminating the need for human employees.

This has happened before – indeed, since the dawn of the Industrial Age – but never in history at the same speed and scale. It’s the advent of the “labor-light economy,” as defined by noted MIT researchers Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson, who have explored the benefits and downsides of rapid technological advancement.

At the same time as machines displace most of us, our fundamental needs – think of Maslow’s basic hierarchy – will be met through the application of technologies. Food, energy, shelter and health care will be free or so low-cost that they virtually are free. Even education eventually will be free.

But the path to that jobless future won’t be easy or simple; here’s what will happen over the next 15 to 20 years: We already are entering the first stage: a trough phase where a massive repricing of labor will take place.

This is inevitable as the number of jobs and available industries shrinks.

The relative purchasing power of labor will become more even across domestic and international markets – which means, as a plus, the cost of American labor will become more competitive.

But there also will be greater division through the rise of a powerful class. Those with specialized skills and abilities, who cannot be conveniently replaced by machines, will enjoy better employment and the resulting capital spoils. Think of this much smaller subset of people as the new 1 percent. Those who can’t

compete in this rising paradigm will struggle, because technologies haven’t yet made food, shelter and health care free or nearly free, although that day clearly is coming.

At the same time we enter this trough, politicians will attempt to derail the inexorable onset of the jobless future. Both sides will struggle to adapt their thinking and reconcile themselves to a model that’s truly unlike anything we’ve seen before.

And both will be keenly aware that the trough phase is the most dangerous for the nation – for as industries blink out like so many dying stars and the jobs with them, people will be unsettled, angry and even panicked.

This phase will inspire us all to ask the question: How do we address a society that’s moving toward such dramatic unevenness?

Policy changes are essential. We will have to soften capitalism as we know it in order to save it.

First, there will need to be a massively structural retraining effort to help prepare more people for the jobs that remain – and new industries that may surface that require skills and knowledge we can’t yet fully anticipate.

Second, wage insurance – a supplement that lessens the gap between what a person was earning and currently earns – will be fundamental during what will be a volatile period of adjustment as people, governments and institutions come to grips with a sea change in the way we work.

Change is nearly always difficult.

The advent of the jobless future has the potential to strain and stress us at scale, before it arrives in force. Yet its coming is assured. Devising and socializing smart policies now will make the transition as smooth as possible, protecting us both as individuals and as the collective.

To the Editor: Here’s a startling statistic: Almost 40 million households haven’t saved anything for retirement.

Sixty-two percent of Americans age 55 to 64 have less than one year’s savings. So, why is President Obama pushing a new regulation that would put up obstacles for Americans to obtain retirement advice? Does he distrust Americans enough to restrict them from investing in stable, sound financial products?

Picture this: Beth Ann, age 62 and nearing retirement, wants to manage her financial future by rolling over her employer-sponsored 401(k) plan into an individual retirement account (IRA) she controls. But when she visits her longtime financial adviser, she hits a wall: The Department of Labor has stepped

in between her and her trusted adviser who has provided her reliable service for years.

For whatever reason, the president and his administration don’t know or don’t care what their new rules will mean for Main Street investors like Beth Ann who need this retirement advice the most. Washington regulations could make Beth Ann too expensive of a customer for her adviser to serve.

Ironically, breaking this trusted relationship with the person who understands her financial goals the best actually leaves her worse off when she is left to navigate the complex market on her own.

That’s why I am fighting in Congress, as a member of the House Financial Services Committee, to make sure Beth Ann and millions like her have access to the retirement advice they want and need.

Many Americans want the choice to get help from trusted experts when planning for the future. Let’s again start trusting Americans to make wise decisions about their own lives.

‘WORTH EVERY SECOND OF HEARTACHE’

Athletes clear many obstacles to finish 26.2 mile race in St. Charles

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Many runners run track and cross country in high school, and maybe even college, but there are a few who make the jump to taking part in a marathon.

It was marathon weekend in St. Charles as the sixth annual Fox Valley Marathon got under way Sunday morning in downtown St. Charles as many runners took to the starting line.

But 26.2 miles is no slight feat, and with the marathon, half-marathon and a 20-mile run taking place, there were certainly a fair share of personal obstacles runners had to face. But overcoming the challenges to win your race? Not as likely.

Julie Ulery, a 1999 Batavia graduate, thought her marathon was about to end during mile 12 of her race, dealing with an issue that has hampered her for quite some time.

“I deal with sciatic nerve issues, so my leg basically stopped working,” the 34-yearold Ulery said. “This race means a lot to me, being from Batavia and going to Batavia High School. My parents, son and nephews were there cheering me on, and my son is the reason I pursued running to this level. I wanted to show him no matter what you want to accomplish, you can do it, so I knew I had to pull through and finish my race.”

Not only did Ulery finish her race, she was the top female finisher of the marathon.

Although she said she expected to do slightly better time-wise (finishing in 3:07:20), Ulery was very happy to fight through.

Andrew Dorgan, 29, of Glen Ellyn, was the overall marathon winner in 2:50:22.

St. Charles High School graduate Tera Moody has been through quite a bit since her high school graduation. Moody represented the United States at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany in the mile run, but injuries have forced her retirement from international competition. Through months in a walking boot and injuries to just about every part of her legs, Moody was back in St. Charles to compete in her second race in more than a year and a half.

Why not win the half-marathon while you’re at it, right?

Moody finished as the top female in the half-marathon (1:17:20) and second individual overall, just 15 seconds behind John Collet of Verona.

“There have been so many ups and downs in my career,” Moody said. “Running can be so heartbreaking sometimes.

Even right now, I found out I have a pretty bad iron deficiency, but luckily I have a little while before I run again.

There’s so much that goes into [running] and so much pain and sacrifice, but its worth all of it … worth every second of heartache.”

Fighting back tears of joy, it was quite clear that running was more than just a sport or hobby to Moody and several

participants.

Although Dorgan won rather handily, by 5½ minutes, there were small moments of thought that maybe his race would end short, as well.

“I originally was only going to run the 20-mile today,” Andrew Dorgan said. “But then I just decided to go for it. It was interesting because the first 20 miles weren’t bad, but I felt like I hit a wall for those last six or so. I thought someone was eventually going to pass me, but I guess I built enough of a lead to hang on. I kept telling myself, ‘You can’t give up, you’re so close,’ you know. It means a lot to win.”

Andrew Dorgan was thinking about one thing after he finished his race, however, that didn’t have much to do

with running.

“Best thing about being done [is] what you get to eat.

I can’t wait to eat a big pizza after this,” Dorgan said with a smile.

Dorgan set a personal record by nearly 12 minutes.

He and his brother, Patrick, who had the top 20-mile time (2:03:52) will run in the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon in two weeks.

The Fox Valley Marathon was more of a tuneup than anything for them, so taking home the top honors was another positive for the long-time runners.

The top female finisher in the 20-mile race was Sarah Mahaney of Montgomery (2:20:31).

NOTEWORTHY Weather delay hurts Marmion

Marmion was feeling good Friday night against Providence as the clock ticked down toward halftime. After a big loss to St. Francis in Week 3, the Cadets held a 7-0 lead over last season’s Class 7A state champion. But an hour and 50-minute delay was probably the last thing Marmion coach Dan Thorpe wanted.

Not only did the delay affect the Cadets, but it energized the Celtics.

Providence scored 24 unanswered points to down the Cadets, 24-7. Those scores included two Marmion safeties, one of which saw the free kick returned for a touchdown by the Celtics.

Nick Auriemma scored Marmion’s lone touchdown on a four-yard run in the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Collin Gibson struggled in his first varsity start, completing just 5 of 13 passes for 65 yards and two interceptions.

“The defense [Providence] has is outstanding,” Thorpe said. “We need to limit mistakes the best we can because a team like that takes advantage of chances you give them in the blink of an eye.”

Marmion will have two weeks to prepare for its Week 6 matchup at Fenwick, after Chicago Legal Prep Charter forfeited this Friday’s contest. It will become official on Friday, but the Cadets’ record

will improve to 2-3 overall with that result.

Pass opens up run for Kaneland

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly wondered how teams would react after Jonathan Alstott’s Week 3 breakout game against Rich Central. The freshman running back scored four touchdowns in the second half alone, and Fedderly figured that served notice to at least a few observers.

Yorkville caught notice, but Kaneland still found a way to keep Alstott involved in Week 4. The passing game was strong from quarterback Jake Marczuk, as the senior signal-caller threw for three scores, which will be key moving forward to create room for the running game.

Alstott found the end zone once again Saturday night against Yorkville, finishing with 92 yards on 15 carries and a 9-yard score.

“The first two games were great ways for him to learn. They really were,” Fedderly said. “He wants to be good and wants to do what he can to make sure he doesn’t let them team down. It’s going to be on us, now that people know who [Jonathan] is, to find ways continue to find ways to have him be successful.”

Through four games, Alstott has carried the ball 68 times for 316 yards and

five touchdowns. The Knights are 3-1.

East falls in first Tri-Cities matchup It’s been said before and we’ll say it again. In order for coach Bryce Farquhar and St. Charles East to call a season a success, it must beat one of its Tri-Cities rivals. East (1-3) can have its way against the likes of Elgin, Larkin and Streamwood in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division, but in order to have a chance at the playoffs, it needs a signature win.

In the first game against one of its Tri-Cities brethren, the Saints fell to Batavia Saturday morning, 28-0. Farquhar is still finding out what some of his players are capable of, but has never been satisfied with sacrificing losses to do so.

“In order to be the best, you have to beat the best,” Farquhar said. “We want to play these games. Regardless of past outcomes, these are the games you circle on the schedule.”

The Saints will host Streamwood on Friday, before heading to Geneva in Week 6. St. Charles North visits Norris Stadium in Week 8.

LAKE FOREST – Bears coach John Fox said Monday that tests revealed quarterback Jay Cutler has a strained hamstring, but wouldn’t put a timetable on Cutler’s return.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Cutler will miss “at least” the next two weeks, which includes games in Seattle and at home against the Raiders.

Cutler suffered the injury trying to make a tackle after he threw an interception in the second quarter, which was returned for a touchdown in the Bears’ 48-23 loss Sunday at Soldier Field.

“I think any time it’s not real severe I think it’s good

news,” Fox said. “We’ll just evaluate it going forward, we have game-planning tonight for Seattle and tomorrow, and players are back in on Wednesday.”

The Bears will have to release an injury report Wednesday, which is when Fox said they’ll have more information about Cutler’s injury.

When asked about Cutler’s chances to practice Wednesday, Fox responded, “I don’t know. Is it going to be heads or tails Sunday? I don’t know.”

Before to the injury, Cutler had completed all eight of his passes, including 48-yard touchdown.

Jimmy Clausen replaced Cutler and was 14 of 23 passing for 121 yards and one interception.

Runners thrive in friendly environment

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Steve Courtney knows the St. Charles area well, but he never expected he’d return to it this fall, let alone for running purposes.

Courtney, a Burlington Central alumnus who now calls Florida his home, ran in Sunday’s Fox Valley Marathon in downtown St. Charles.

The retired military man proved to be more than happy with his first return to the area in more than 30 years.

His time or place in the standings was irrelevant. The fact that he completed the course

was noteworthy, although nowhere near the focal point of a great weekend.

“My wife and I were excited to run in it,” Courtney said.

“My wife hopes to run a marathon in all 50 states, so we’ll see how far that goes. This is another one to cross off the list, which is pretty cool, but we’ve got a ways to go. I can’t complain. We were glad to be here.”

Beautiful weather provided an opportunistic environment and course for the runners and made for a great day for a field that included locals and visitors.

“I’ve only missed one Chicago Marathon in all my years,

so this is a big one for me to be at,” said 72-year-old Bob Ramsay of Steger. “I’ve been running for close to 60 years now and this has become a nice one, so I’m happy I didn’t miss it. Good times.”

Regardless of whether you were a newcomer or a veteran like Ramsay, the sixth annual event provided an ideal setting for all runners as well as their supporters.

“This course is awesome, and I’ve been pushing my husband to run this for a while,” said Chicago’s Daisy Hernandez, who was rooting on her husband, Jose, along with her kids, Julian and Benjamin.

“It’s a big deal. I told him he

needed to show the confidence that he could do this and it’s been great.”

Motivation was key.

“Oh yeah, we made sure he could hear us,” Daisy Hernandez said. “Benjamin latched onto him early on and wouldn’t let him go early on.

This was great. We were happy for everyone who was racing.”

Naperville area sisters Nicole and Kristen Skells both kept pace with each other throughout the race, although the younger Kristen Skells pulled away over time.

Kristen Skells was certainly one of those newbies, just getting her feet wet in a major event.

“This is relatively new to me, but that’s fine with me,” Kristen Skells said. “It’s such a beautiful course. I had a great time. I had a blast. I’m glad I did this. I showed myself some things.”

The cooler weather provided wonderful running conditions, which was something the runners utilized to their advantage.

“We were very blessed with great weather, starting in the 40s (Sunday morning),” corace director Dave Sheble said.

“Not that any of the runners would complain anyway, but these were outstanding conditions.”

As was the race.

Keeping pace: Elburn’s Rob Reilly was a four-hour pacer. He printed a bunch of inspirational quotes to share with those who were looking to break the four-hour mark along with him.

A pacer’s role is huge for runners, especially those with limited experience, as he or she can help runners stay on track by maintaining the appropriate time per mile.

“It was my seventh marathon, so I tried to coach them a little bit,” he said. “When we went uphill, I told them to lean forward and then at water stops, that we weren’t

going to stop, but only to grab water and Gatorade and keep on moving. I told them to keep quiet to save their breath for running.”

Reilly admitted that his group at the start was much larger at the beginning than it was at the finish, but he still was able to connect with all the runners who tried to maintain his pace.

“I only had one or two people with me at the end, but I know they all finished,” he said. “Some didn’t get the subfour that they wanted, but some did. It was a great race day, though.”

There were more than 2,700 participants in Sunday’s three races, and the general consensus around the race was best captured in Moody’s words: “such a well-organized, wellput together race.”

Julie Rochester of Libertyville said that not only has she noticed more participation in this, her third time running the Fox Valley Marathon, but also the nature of the community genuinely caring about the event.

Though the likes of the Chicago and Boston marathons often can provide more exposure to runners, or call the completion a larger feat, the St. Charles-based race offers that close community feel.

“I’ll tell you what, this race is so well-organized and put together that it’s just the perfect size,” Rochester said.

“There are so many more people out here supporting than the first time I did this. This race is really awesome. I’ve done 10 Chicago Marathons, and there is just something about being here, with the support you get, that doesn’t compare.”

Through the training and fighting through the toughness of completing a particular race Sunday as part of the Fox Valley Marathon, there was a consensus among runners that stood out.

The marathon course runs through several parts of downtown St. Charles and Routes 25 and 31, as well as along the Fox River, which seemed to catch several runners’ eyes before, during and after the race.

“The course here is so beautiful,” Karl Flener of Park Ridge said. “This morning the temperature was a little cooler and there was steam coming off the waterfalls.

Even though I was running, I wish I could have stopped to take a picture. It was absolutely beautiful. I’ve done several marathons and you can’t replicate stuff like that anywhere else.”

Flener has run in 25 marathons, and although he joked that he would have liked to see his time be lower, the event and picturesque course took precedent over the day.

Having run in bigger races, such as several Chicago Marathons, Flener said the more popular races often can become too crowded and not provide anything quite like what Sunday’s race brought.

The 41-year-old Flener completed his second Fox Valley Marathon and said he

so finding herself in a marathon on Sunday was a huge accomplishment and a bit of a surprise.

“This is my first one,” she said. “It’s a beautiful day, and I was able to keep a nice pace by myself so I’m pretty happy.”

Although the field included many longtime runners, it also featured many newcomers, such as Bermes.

“It’s hard to believe that I’m doing this now,” she laughed. “It went even better than I thought it would.”

Spectator-friendly: From the beginning, co-race directors Dave Sheble and Craig Bixler had the passion to put this event together, but it was always a matter of could they do it?

As Sunday brought about the sixth running of the Fox Valley Marathon, there are several areas in which Sheble has seen progress, but none more so than the interest of the community.

But they didn’t do it alone.

“Craig and I have been so fortunate to get to this point,” Sheble said. “Our staff has put a lot of time into the runner and spectator guides that it’s nearly impossible to not find the right time and place to be.

Figurines and prints were the “photographs” and “news” of past centuries before the invention of the camera.

Famous people, especially royalty, religious leaders, actors and actresses, criminals, heroes and unusual people and scenes of everyday life were modeled in ceramics. Sometimes the figurines show a forgotten activity like “grappling” (wrestling to the death while tied together) or a boy standing on one leg while holding the other off the ground (a common punishment for the “dunce” who is failing in school). Thousands of different figurines were made and collectors like to concentrate on a special area like sports, dogs, wild animals, cottages or religious themes. A rare figure of a young Jewish boy was made by the Capo di Monte porcelain works. He has a beard and is wearing a frock coat, yarmulke (skull cap), spats and has a dagger. The 3 3/4 inch figure of a boy has the underglaze blue crown and N mark used by the Italian firm. It was estimated at $4,000 to $6,000 at a 2014 Kestenbaum & Co. auction in New York City. *** Q: My mother had two bedroom chests of drawers that date back over 100 years. The remnants of paper labels read “American Walnut, Atlas Furniture Co., Made in Jamestown, New York.” One is 31 inches high by 48 inches wide and the other is 40 inches by 37 inches. Both are in great condition. Do they have any value?

A: Atlas Furniture Co. was formed in 1883 as the Swedish Furniture Co.

by Swedish immigrants Lawrence Erickson and Gustave Holmberg in Jamestown, New York. The name was changed to Atlas in 1871. Furniture was Jamestown’s biggest industry by the end of the 1800s. Atlas advertised itself as “Manufacturers of Bedroom Furniture,” making “better” grades of bedroom furniture, including dressers, chiffoniers and toilet tables from walnut, mahogany and other woods.

By 1920, Atlas was the second largest maker of bedroom furniture in the U.S. At the beginning of the Depression in 1929, the company was 100 percent employee owned and every

employee and officer of the company was a stockholder. Atlas closed in 1941, when the once-booming furniture industry of Jamestown was in decline. Your chests would sell for $50 to $100 each. *** Q: I have a cast iron toy bank that was given to me when I was very small, probably around 1940. It’s a zeppelin with large wheels on the front and small wheels on the back. There is a slot for money on the top. It’s about 8 inches long and says “Gray Zeppelin” on the side. Does it have any value?

A: The letters may be worn and hard to see. Your bank is a “Graf Zeppelin” pull toy bank made by the A.C. Williams Company in about 1934. The Graf Zeppelin, a German hydrogenpowered airship, carried passengers from 1928 to 1937 and many companies made toy zeppelins. A.C. Williams Company was originally a manufacturer of flat irons, tools and stoves in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. It moved to Ravenna, Ohio, after a fire destroyed the factory in 1892. It made models of company products as salesmen’s samples, and began producing banks and toys about 1893. In the 1920s, the company was the world’s largest cast iron bank and toy manufacturer. Production stopped during World War II, and banks were not made again. Castiron toys were made after the war until 1977. A.C. Williams Company made a version of this bank without wheels that sells for about $115 to $230. The version with wheels is rarer and sold recently for $440. *** Q: I have a round label picturing the profile of an Indian chief with a feathered headdress. It reads “The Sleepy Eye Mills, Sleepy Eye, Minn.,” “Highest Patent Flour,” and “Sleepy Eye

cousin (and friend) who is in a toxic relationship with a man who breaks up with her repeatedly, manipulates and abuses her emotionally, and probably cheats.

It has made me sad to see her go through this for years.

They were supposed to be married soon, but are having the same problems again. She’s unsure what steps to take, even though family and friends are advising her against marrying him. I don’t support the idea either, but I don’t want to create a rift with my cousin.

Eating fish is healthier than taking fish oil supplements Dear Doctor K: Heart disease runs in my family. Should I eat fish, or take fish oil supplements?

Dear Reader: Eating fish regularly reduces a person’s risk of sudden death from heart disease. It’s also brain-healthy.

For that reason, most doctors and I recommend a regular diet of fish for people who have heart disease. And also for people like you where heart disease runs in the family.

Fish oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a kind of “healthy fat.” The protective effect of omega-3 fatty acids may stem from several different effects they have on the body. They keep platelets from forming clots in the blood. They help reduce blood pressure. They raise HDL, the so-called “good cholesterol.”

They lower levels of another kind of fat linked to heart disease and strokes: triglycerides. Probably most important, they seem to prevent lethal heart-rhythm disorders from developing.

So, since heart disease is such a common problem, I recommend that most people have at least two servings per week of oily fish.

That’s true even if they don’t have heart disease or family

I can’t be as certain about the value of taking fish oil supplements. The evidence that fish oils are heart-healthy comes mainly from studies of eating fish, not from swallowing fish oil capsules. However, there is reasonably strong evidence that fish oil supplements may reduce the risk of sudden death from heart disease. And they have no significant side effects.

So, if you are a person that does not like to eat fish, and since heart disease runs in your family, I’d advise you to take fish oil supplements.

The heart benefits of fish and of fish oil supplements appear to be mainly on reducing the risk of sudden death. The evidence is not as strong that fish and fish oil reduce the risk of other heart conditions, like angina or heart attacks. I think that is probably because they are potent in reducing the heart rhythm disorders that can suddenly cause the heart

to stop beating.

Typical over-the-counter fish oil supplements contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the omega-3s found in fish. Many authorities recommend that if you already have heart disease or high levels of triglycerides, you should discuss with your doctor taking 3,000 milligrams of fish oil capsules per day. If you have elevated triglycerides, your doctor may recommend a higher dose (or some other treatment to lower triglycerides).

In this deal, for example, take the West hand. You open one spade, but the opponents push into four hearts. You lead the spade king. Partner overtakes it with his ace and returns the spade two, declarer following both times.

What would you do next?

South is strong enough for a three-heart bid on the first round, which in the balancing seat is intermediate, showing some 14-16 points. However, most players would want a stronger suit.

You should realize that declarer, if paying any attention, knows that you have the heart king. Your partner did not respond to your one-spade opening and has already produced four points in the spade ace.

So, a skillful South will play to drop your heart king and get lucky. You have just one chance.

Cash the club ace (necessary if declarer had a singleton club and could make a loser-on-loser play) before leading your lowest spade – then hope partner thinks to ruff with his heart eight to force a trump promotion.

If he ruffs with the heart three... fill in your own conclusion to that sentence.
