STC rededicates Civil War training site On the Web

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As a ceremony began Saturday to rededicate the southern portion of Langum Park as Camp Kane, Capt. Jeff Johnson of the 8th Illinois Calvary noted the history of the 20-acre site.

Soldiers in the 8th and 17th Illinois Calvaries used the parcel – which is along Route 25 in St. Charles – for training during the Civil War. Johnson said Lt. Marcellus Jones of the 8th Illinois Calvary is credited for firing the first shot in the Battle of Gettysburg.

“That’s how close you are to the Civil War,” Johnson said.

Saturday’s ceremony brought attendees closer to that era, as Johnson and other re-enactors were dressed in Civil War-era uniforms, and actors portrayed President Abraham Lincoln and St. Charles resident Col. John Farnsworth, who was a congressman, abolitionist and close confidante of Lincoln’s.

“It was because of them that we were able to make this happen today,” she said.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said the community sometimes takes its history for granted. He summarized Camp Kane’s significance in

a proclamation the council recently approved.

“Col. Farnsworth used the property he owned that is now known as Langum Park to develop Camp Kane. ... This was the only Civil War training camp in Kane County, and it remained active until early 1864,” Rogina said.

After the rededication, a

ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the Jones Law Office, which was recently moved to Langum Park.

“This was the first law office in St. Charles run by Steven S. Jones, who named St. Charles, and it served as a holding cell for deserters during the Civil War,” Rogina said, reading from the procla-

mation.

“On Sept. 20, 2014, we honor all the men who served in the 8th and 17th Illinois Calvaries, as well as honor all the important St. Charles and national history that Camp Kane and the Jones Law Office represents.”

For Sycamore resident Karla Weir, Saturday’s events were personal. Her great-grandfather, Silas Dexter Wesson, was assigned to Company K of the 8th Illinois Calvary, she said. However, she said, he did not participate in the Battle of Gettysburg because he had been wounded at Beverly Run. The rededication of Camp Kane was the first of a threephase project, Malay said.

Other goals include constructing a memorial wall for Civil War veterans and building a facility focused on the Underground Railroad, she said.

Shoppers scoop up bargains early at Barn Sale

At least it wasn’t for Jim Goldbach and his wife. The Carol Stream couple arrived at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles at about 9 a.m. Saturday – the sale started at 8 a.m. – to find that many items already had sold, including pieces they hoped to get.

“It really pays to shop early if you know what you want,” Goldbach said.

The sale ran through Sunday at the fairgrounds.

BATAVIA – The first thing one might notice in looking at one of Pamela Hamilton’s portraits is the intensity of her subject’s eyes.

“The eyes are the window to the soul,” said the Geneva artist, whose work was on display Sunday at the Art in Your Eye fine art festival in downtown Batavia. “I’ve always liked to paint eyes, even as a child.”

Sunday was the final day of the festival, which opened Friday night at the Batavia Riverwalk in downtown Batavia.

In the past three years, Hamilton has participated in about 50 art shows, which has allowed her to educate people about her art.

Several mediums of art were on display at the festival. Brad Pogatetz of Batavia won an award of excellence at the festival’s fine art show for his photography work.

“It’s always great to get recognized with an award,”

the Mayor’s Choice Award in the fine art show. For Branson, participating in art shows has many benefits.

“I love being able to show my work,” Branson said.

“You get to talk shop with other artists. You start to create more friendships.”

In addition to the fine art show, the festival also featured a City Hall exhibit.

Batavia resident Joan Joseph marveled at the artwork on display in the exhibit.

“It’s great to see that people have such talents, which I envy,” Joseph said.

Despite the weekend’s less than ideal weather conditions, organizers are calling this year’s festival a success.

On and off rain Saturday and Sunday “didn’t deter people from coming out,” said Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Joi Cuartero.

This is the 10th year of the festival. Batavia MainStreet organized this year’s festival for the first time.

As part of Art in Your Eye’s expanded offerings, the festival featured live music Friday and Saturday nights along with a craft beer and wine garden.

Several artists were not able to participate in the festival Sunday after a storm packing fierce wind and rain blew down their booths at about midnight.

“Nothing was permanently damaged,” Cuartero said.

“The artists were happy with the way we responded.”

Misery was his immediate reward, though pride and fulfillment soon followed.

Wysong, winner of Sunday’s fifth annual Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, crossed in 2:44.58, but celebration for the 26-year-old Indiana man was delayed as dehydration left him woozy at the finish line. He was whisked to the medical tent near the finish line, and estimated he then consumed about a gallon of water and Gatorade in the span of half an hour.

“It was a little concerning but it wasn’t a huge deal,” Wysong said. “I rebounded pretty fast. I was on the edge.

If I would have been just a little more dehydrated, it would have been bad.”

Wysong said the last few miles of the race left him “seeing stars” as he willed himself to keep chugging despite the pain.

“When you get dehydrated, it’s pretty much your whole body, your muscles lose the ability to move,” Wysong said. “It’s harder and harder to move your muscles and takes more and more will power and effort to just make muscles react the way you want them to, and then they don’t work as well.”

The weather Sunday morning was cool and breezy, which might have played into Wysong’s predicament. In addition to his lack of marathon experience, Wysong said the conditions caused him to underestimate his need for fluids, and he ran through water stations rather than slowing down.

His physical duress curtailed the revelry at the finish line, but co-race organizer Dave Sheble said the marathon is well-equipped to deal with medical adversity.

“You always hate to see a runner in distress, especially a winner,” Sheble said. “Obviously he left it all on the course out there.”

A former college runner at Hillsdale College (Mich.), Wysong hadn’t previously run a race longer than a 10K. He said a friend challenged him to run the Boston Marathon, and although that timing didn’t work out, it intrigued him to give marathon running a whirl.

A younger brother looked after him in the race’s aftermath while his sister, Dorothy, and parents, Phil and Vi, also participated in the day’s races, which included a 20-mile run and half marathon.

Indiana, with his wife, Marta, and 6-month-old daughter, Eva, is a farmer, raising pigs and grain. Both running and farming “take perseverance,” said Wysong, as Sunday’s race reflected to an extreme.

“It was challenging but it was worth it,” Wysong said. “It’s cool to just race

as a family. That’s pretty neat.”

Wysong finished more than 5 minutes ahead of runner-up Jordan Kremer, 23, of Naperville. It was also the first marathon for Kremer, a graduate assistant cross country and track coach at North Central College, where he ran collegiately.

Kremer finished in 2:50.16.

“My high school coach [at Belvidere North] is here,” Kremer said. “He told me [Wysong] had about six minutes on me so I wasn’t really going after him. I just wanted to finish, you know?”

Another Naperville resident, Marisa Hird, was the top women’s marathon finisher. The 28-year-old Hird placed second among women at the inaugural Naperville Marathon last year.

“Can’t complain,” said Hird, whose winning time Sunday was 2:53.37. “I was hoping for faster, but with the wind, it’s what I had today.”

Hird hit the finish line in downtown St. Charles more than 15 minutes faster than women’s runner-up, Ariell Bachman, of Chicago.

About 3,800 runners registered for Sunday’s races, which again stretched from St. Charles to Aurora and back, with some minor tweaks to the course.

Just like the previous years, runners’ feedback was largely upbeat.

“Running right along the river is always pretty enjoyable,” said Allie Walters, of Chicago, the top female finisher in the half marathon (1:26.53). “The wind was kind of tough the last few miles coming at us, but besides that, it was a nice course.”

Sheble said runners who have taken part in each of the five years of the event received special medals saluting their loyalty. He said “a huge number” of runners are repeat entries.

“We say we’re just as committed to you as you are to us, coming back year after year, so that’s been fun to watch,” Sheble said.

One of those marathoners returning for more was North Aurora resident Chris Benyo, 49. Benyo’s enthusiasm for the Fox Valley Marathon remains intact, and said he liked some of the adjustments to the course this year.

“It seemed like we were on street a lot more, which is fine,” Benyo said.

“Because when you’re on the path, you’ve got bikers and people walking dogs and stuff like that. [The race organizers] are great. I’ll do this every year as long as I can. It’s a fantastic marathon.”

Her students likely will have a less mixed response.

“I really had to show persistence, which I’m a teacher [at Highlands Elementary in Naperville], and that’s one of the things that we try to instill in my first graders, is even when it’s hard, stick with it,” Ebervein said. “So that’s also one of the reasons I’m running, is to be a good example for my first graders.”

Dick Pond piles up winners: An internal competition among Dick Pond running stores was a new twist this year, and the Park Ridge location gained early bragging rights when team members Rob Chenoweth won the men’s Fall Final 20 (2:02.37) and Lionel Montenegro won the men’s half marathon (1:13.32).

Chenoweth stopped friend and fellow Dick Pond Fast Track runner Steve Breese’s four-year dominance in the 20mile race.

“I’m in a little better shape this year than he is,” Chenoweth said. “He’s been faster in years past, so it was nice.”

The St. Charles Dick Pond team received a boost from Elena Shemyakina, of Geneva, the fastest female 20-mile runner in 2:18.10.

Allie Walters, 26, of Chicago, won the women’s half-marathon in 1:26.53. She said she’s training for the New York City Marathon in November.

The Vikings got off to a slow start and eventually fell in three games, 24-26, 25-19, 1225.

having lost to Glenbard South in three games Friday. Geneva finished third among 12 teams.

In the semifinal, Geneva faced deficits of 12-4 in set one and 8-4 in Game 2. The Hilltoppers (16-4) went on a 12-1 run to open the third game, a surge for which the Vikings had no answer.

For the first time in five runnings of the marathon, the store just a cool-down jog from the start/finish line opened at 6 a.m., one hour earlier than usual, to accommodate early-rising fans’ food and restroom needs.

“Even if it was just bathroom use, just to show them we’re here,” front end manager Kathy Rohrbach said. “We had people that were even from Naperville that never knew we existed. So just traffic flow of seeing who we are was good.

“It’s well worth being open the extra hour for us, just for the community, you know.”

Colette’s cause: About 75 runners completed the race for a local cancer assistance charity, the Colette A. Miles Foundation. Each sported blue tanktops bearing the TCAMF initials.

Miles was a breast cancer survivor when she was diagnosed with a recurrence of the disease in 2009. She died in 2011.

Miles’ friend, St. Charles resident Irene Eby, 41, heads the effort and was part of the half-marathon field.

ST. CHARLES – Persistent winds swirled near downtown St. Charles as the lead pack finished Sunday’s fifth annual Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon.

To be sure, they had nothing on the storm that passed through race headquarters late Saturday night.

With several marathon officials pulling an organizational all-nighter, the sight of torrential rain and high winds wreaking havoc on tents around midnight marked one of the final hurdles before race day.

“Boy, I tell you what, when we jumped in the food tent just to get out of the rain, that was it,” co-race director Dave Sheble said. “I mean, our 10x10 (-foot) tents were tumbling over each other, (larger) tents were flying up off the ground. It was tough. Pretty short, but it was kind of scary.”

Sheble, fellow co-director Craig Bixler and several volunteers regrouped by milling around the start/finish line at the intersection of First and Indiana streets well before the races started at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Sheble called it more a case of inspiration than disorganization.

“We have been fortunate that each year we get a little better and we get a little more sleep,” Sheble said. “[Saturday] night was unusual, just that we had so many things we were working on. And we said, you know, let’s

just stick with it. We’re having fun with it. So much of it is you don’t want to go to sleep because you’re having so much fun. It was like Christmas for us.”

At least there weren’t any plastic Santa Clauses or reindeer to track down in the wee hours.

“It’s all good,” Sheble said.

“It happens.”

Mom on her mind: Beth Ebervein, 37, of Oswego, ran the half marathon, the longest race of her life. As sunshine streaked through the clouds at one point, Ebervein felt what she considered heavenly inspiration.

Attached to the back of Ebervein’s shirt was a heartshaped sign that read “I run in honor of my mom, 5-25-14.” Her mother, Dorothy Kowynia, was at the forefront of Ebervein’s mind during the race.

“My mom passed away in her sleep in May, she wasn’t sick or anything,” Ebervein said. “I was actually out for a run when the police came to find me and let me know that she was rushed to Good Samaritan. She just died in her sleep.

“My dad always said she had such a kind heart, and unfortunately her heart stopped. That’s why I just wanted to run it in honor of her and her good heart, and to keep others healthy, too, by getting out and getting exercise, because heart disease is just so terrible.”

Dear Abby: What are the ethics in outing a cheater? Someone I know has been cheated on by her boyfriend for two years – about as long as she has been with him. I know this because the woman he has been cheating with is someone I know.

Last week, I told the girl her boyfriend has been cheating. Now I am suddenly a pariah and outcast. I felt she had the right to know, but was I wrong? Should I not have told her? – Annoyed In Chicago Dear Annoyed: In this age of social diseases, I don’t think it’s wrong to tell someone that a boyfriend/girlfriend is cheating so he or she can be tested. However, as you have discovered, doing it is risky.

There’s a saying, “Don’t shoot the messenger,” that’s been around forever. It implies that a person who delivers unwelcome news will be blamed for it. While you and I would want to be told that we were being betrayed, obviously, your former friend didn’t, which is why you’re being punished.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend and I live in a duplex. We manage it, live in the lower unit and have three tenants upstairs.

One of them, whose bedroom is directly above ours, recently got a girlfriend. Aside from some loud video game-playing, he was always the quietest guy and has never been disruptive. But since he and this girl got together, they have been disturbing the entire house with their noisy lovemaking.

It starts with a few bangs against the wall that become constant, and then the screams start.

I have no idea how to approach this respectfully and professionally. Please give me your thoughts.

To participate effectively in a bridge deal, we hope to find a fit with a partner. This week we will look at the factors affecting your choice when you have two fits.

First, should you prefer a 4-4 fit or a 5-3 fit?

Almost always, you should pick the 4-4. If the 4-4 fit is a side suit, you will get at most four tricks. But if it is the trump suit, you will often get an extra trick by ruffing a loser in one hand or the other. And a 5-3 side-suit fit will usually provide two discards on the fourth and fifth cards. But if the 5-3 fit is the trump suit, it will rarely furnish a sixth trump trick from a ruff in the shorter trump hand.

Look at today’s deal. How does South get on in four hearts or four spades?

In the auction, North might have started with a negative double to show his four hearts, especially as his singleton made his hand a tad strong for a single spade raise.

After the spade raise, the South hand was just worth game, but he wisely showed his heart suit. Then North raised to four hearts, a tad worried about his weak trumps.

Against four hearts, West should realize that East is highly unlikely to have an entry, so should start with three rounds of trumps. But South can easily restrict his losers to one spade and two trumps.

In spades, West can cash his two high hearts and give his partner a heart ruff. Then West’s trump trick defeats the contract.
