Kaneland board continues to discuss advertising policy SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board took a step toward approving new advertising guidelines at its meeting Monday night.

By a 6-1 vote, board members OK’d the first reading of the revised policy. Board member Peter Lopatin voted against it, but he said it’s not that he opposes the revisions.

There were several changes and debates throughout Monday’s discussion, and Lopatin indicated he would prefer “to review it as a clean document.”

Lopatin wasn’t the only one with that sentiment. The proposal looks to address advertising on several levels in Kaneland School District 302, including a new scoreboard at Kaneland High School’s football stadium.

While others agreed with Lopatin’s hope to see a “clean document” with revisions in-

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla dicated, most board members agreed it was best to approve the first reading in hopes that the policy revisions could be ready for a vote at the board’s next meeting, which is set for Sept. 14.

Ultimately, board members agreed decisions should be made at the district level, by the superintendent or a designee. They also agreed the policy should be reviewed by the district’s attorney.

Some specific issues were debated.

Pedro Rivas said he didn’t see what was wrong with the policy that already is in place.

The revised policy includes a list of bulleted points, including language that would

exclude advertising related to politics, gambling or competing K-12 charter schools, or advertising in classrooms directed at students.

“Whenever you start listing things, there’s always something you are going to miss,” Rivas said.

Board members discussed several issues, including the policy’s language and how and where it would apply.

For instance, Cheryl Krauspe said she was opposed to advertising in the high school’s auditorium, as it could affect acoustics.

“I’m feeling very protective of the auditorium,” Krauspe said, adding “it was a very specifically built area of our building.”

There was debate over an item that would not allow advertising that would “advance or endorse any religious organizations,”

but Ryan Kerry questioned whether that should apply if a church has a festival it wants to advertise.

“To automatically exclude it is where I have the issue,” Kerry said.

There also was discussion about whether school organizations that raise money should keep the profits for the group or whether some money should go to a districtwide fund.

“I think if they make the efforts on good faith, they should receive all of the profits,” said Teresa Witt, the board’s president.

Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs will bring a revised policy to the Sept. 14 meeting.

Keith Wheeler seeks applicants for education advisory council

By MITCH CHAMBERLAIN mchamberlain@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – State Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, is seeking applicants for his education advisory council in Illinois’ 50th District.

More specifically, Wheeler wants community members who are interested in serving on one of the following committees to advise him on state and local education policy: the K-12 classroom educator committee, K-12 parent and taxpayer committee and the higher ed committee.

The 50th District includes

portions of Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, Campton Hills, Elburn, Montgomery, North Aurora, Oswego, Plano, St. Charles, Sugar Grove and Yorkville.

Wheeler said he wants to find out “how [education] is affecting each of the state roles [mandates and funding] and how we can improve the role that Springfield plays in our education system.”

Parents, educators and taxpayers who would like to see changes or efficiencies brought to the education system are encouraged to join the education advisory coun-

cil, Wheeler said.

Wheeler said the committee is being formed with people of various backgrounds “who can help me understand how issues in Springfield affect the real education process back home and to get a chance to ask questions about different approaches that are being taken.”

“We need to generate more ideas for reforms that would make a difference,” Wheeler said, who added he is open-minded about what this council could accomplish.

There has been a “nice

response” from community members interested in joining the council, Wheeler said.

“Every day, there seems to be four or two people stepping up,” Wheeler said.

A time and date for the meetings will be scheduled once a sufficient number of participants signed up to join the council.

LivingWell celebrates 10 years of supporting cancer patients, families

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When Craig Stokely’s wife, Carole, was diagnosed with brain cancer, he said she was not interested in going to LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva.

“But I did, because I was the caregiver and I was desperate for help,” Stokely said. “They have a brain tumor support group at LivingWell. And I came by myself, not knowing what to expect. It was the most incredible, welcoming group.”

Stokely was among the hundreds who turned out Tuesday for LivingWell’s 10th anniversary celebration.

“I am here to celebrate this place,” Stokely said. “My wife died of a brain tumor five years ago, and when she was going through her treatment, we found out about this place, and I thought it was too good to be true. … I went back to Carole and I said, ‘Carole, this

place is amazing. You have to come.’ ” LivingWell offers 75 free programs and services to cancer patients and their families.

These include yoga, nutrition, stress reduction, treatment education, as well as support groups, like the one Stokely and his wife went to.

“She never missed another meeting until she couldn’t get out of bed anymore,” Stokely said.

And after his wife died, Stokely went to LivingWell’s grief support group.

“You know guys like to ‘macho through’ stuff,” Stokely said. “It’s too touchy-feely – grief support kind of stuff. But I went because this had just beaten me down. She was alive for 40 months, and it was the most emotionally and physically draining kind of thing I’d ever done in my life.”

Tom Reynolds of Elburn said he is a survivor of prostate cancer and came to Liv-

ingWell for massage therapy during his treatment.

“We recommend a lot of people [come] here, and I don’t think anybody has turned us down,” Reynolds said. “There are a lot of compliments.”

“It’s a wonderful facility,” added his wife, Ethel Reynolds.

Executive Director Nancy Vance said 20,000 people have come to LivingWell this year, with 400 people a week walking through its doors.

In her remarks to supporters, founding board member Joanne Hansen said she could not believe it’s been 10 years – but then corrected herself and said it was 16 years.

“Because 16 years ago, I had this idea floating around in my head,” Hansen said. “I got up one morning and I said to my husband, ‘You know what? I think we need something like a cancer place for people to go in our community.’ Once you say something out loud, you gotta do it.”

Bringing the fun to Maple Park Fun Fest to feature parade, fireworks, melon decorating and more

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Larry Stachura has hopes visitors one day will flock to the Maple Park Fun Fest to check out a display featuring dozens of decorated melons.

Stachura, the president of the Maple Park Lions Club, is seeking a big turnout for the club’s Mel’nball event. Participants will decorate melons of all kinds to be displayed at the festival, which will be Saturday through Monday in Maple Park.

The Maple Park Fun Fest includes a 5K run, a softball tournament, an entertainment stage, a beer garden, a petting zoo and activities geared toward children. A parade is set for 6 p.m. Saturday on Main Street. A fireworks display is set to start at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

This year’s festival will not feature the traditional toilet bowl races. On Monday, the softball tournament concludes. Monday also will be the rain date for the fireworks show.

The melon contest will be Friday, and melons will be displayed Saturday at the festival.

chura said it is impressive to see crowds visit that city to view decorated scarecrows every year. Stachura called Sycamore’s Pumpkin Festival “just massively huge.”

Stachura asked. It will be the second time melon decorating will be part of Fun Fest, and he said he has contacted schools in the area to boost participation. His mother, Melinda Stachura, works at EduCare of St. Charles, and some of her students are entering the contest.

“You can paint them,” Melinda Stachura said. “You could put stuff on them. … It can be any kind of melon.”

The festival’s parade also will include decorations.

Those at Grace United Methodist Church will feature a Mount Everest-themed float, and one of its organizers, Ann Janecek, promises “it’s going to be large.”

“The goal is to have evergreen trees and a tent,” Janecek said, adding it will feature mountains made of foam and some signage.

Janecek said the church’s goal is to have a creative parade entry each year. In the past, she said, there have been floats featuring a castle, a pirate ship and pandas.

“It became a creative and exciting thing,” she said. “It wasn’t just kids sitting on a float. It raised the excitement of everybody. … What is it going to look like this year?”

Kaergard’s beard has certainly gotten the attention of some downstate officials, as well as some students at Bradley University, where he teaches part-time. He said he’s been called everything from Rip Van Winkle to Santa.

The beard is making its rounds through social media with a #BudgetBeard hashtag.

Former classmates in St. Charles also are getting a kick out of the beard on Facebook, Kaergard said.

Kaergard was part of the last graduating class at St. Charles High School in 2000 before it became St. Charles East. He said his parents and brother still live in the area.

A St. Charles High School alumnus said he will not get rid of his months-old beard until a state budget is passed.

Chris Kaergard, a political reporter at the Journal Star in Peoria, has not shaved or trimmed his bushy, itchy beard since May 31. That’s when the state spring legislative session ended in Springfield.

“It itches a lot, especially on a hot day,” Kaergard said of his beard in a phone interview.

Kaergard said he started growing the beard as a joke, figuring Gov. Bruce Rauner

and the state General Assembly eventually would reach an agreement on a state budget. As of Tuesday evening, a compromise still had not been announced.

Kaergard and a staff photographer have taken photos of the beard in its various stages of growth throughout the summer. The photos were interspersed on a timeline on the Journal Star website with various events related to the budget stalemate.

“The whole idea is to get more people paying attention to the issue,” Kaergard said.

She was born to Elmer and Rosemary Miller in Elgin, Illinois.

Following graduation from Elgin High School, she received her nurses training at St. Joseph Hospital and became a registered nurse.

She met her husband Donald on a blind date and they were engaged two months later. She was a highly creative woman with a great sense of style. She loved to sew, knit and decorate cakes. Pat had a deep and abiding faith, believed in the power of prayer and was a prayer warrior.

She loved her family and friends dearly.

She is survived by her three children; daughter, Mary Catherine (Alan Edwards) Bergman of Pierron, IL; sons, Thomas L. (Sharon) Bergman of Maple Park, IL, Timothy J. • A van window was reported damaged Sunday, Aug. 9, by a BB or similar projectile in the 100 block of Joy Street, Sugar Grove.

• A resident of the 300 block of Quarry Ridge Circle, Sugar Grove, reported Thursday, Aug. 6, that $16,927.44 in fraudulent charges had been made to his credit card between Sunday, July 19, and Wednesday, July 22, at various places in the south suburbs, Chicago and Northwest Indiana. He told police the card was in his possession.

• On Wednesday, Aug. 5, a purse was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 100 block of Joy Street, Sugar Grove. It reportedly contained a driver’s license, credit card and change. A leather bag holding an iPad and paperwork also was reported stolen.

• Isais V. Fabian-Lopez, 26, of the 1100 block of East Sixth Street, Sandwich, was charged Wednesday, Aug. 12, with speeding, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance. He also was arrested on a DuPage County warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license.

• A starter’s pistol, laptop computer and equipment for timing races was found Wednesday, July 29, against a door at Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove.

An officer happened upon the items while checking for open doors and noted in a police report it was strange to find the items lying outside the school.

• Diana L. Russell, 38, of the 200 block of Berkshire Lane, Sugar Grove, was charged Wednesday, July 29, with public intoxication.

• Jeffrey J. Hawkins, 50, of the 2300 block of Nan Street, Aurora, was charged Wednesday, July 22, with two overweight violations related to the garbage truck he was driving.

City to talk about Prairie State at meeting

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen plan to hold a special meeting Sept. 28 about the city’s investment in the controversial Prairie State Energy Campus.

“We want the citizenry to know what is going on with Prairie State,” 1st Ward Alderman Mike O’Brien said at

Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. “There are a lot of moving parts.”

The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers of the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia.

In addition, the city plans to answer residents’ answers about Prairie State through a new email address, power@ cityofbatavia.net.

A handful of residents recently demonstrated against the city’s involvement in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus. The demonstration was before a meeting of the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency board at the Batavia Government Center in downtown Batavia.

In 2005, the agency, of which Batavia is a member,

agreed to a long-term power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State. Geneva and Rochelle are other members.

Batavia aldermen last year voted, 11-3, to approve an electric rate hike to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues. Batavia officials had said the city need-

ed to increase electric rates for many reasons, including higher-than-anticipated construction costs related to the Prairie State project.

A federal judge recently dismissed a class-action lawsuit brought by nine utility users/ratepayers from Batavia about the city’s investment in Prairie State.

The city of Batavia was not named in the suit.

Residential street targeted in burglaries ST. CHARLES – A residential street in far eastern St. Charles Township recently was targeted for burglaries or attempted burglaries, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Office reports.

A resident in the 33W200 block of Toni Street reported an attempted burglary Aug. 22 after finding a screen window damaged, police reported. The report noted two handprints were left on the window underneath the screen.

Also that day, a resident of the 33W000 block of Toni Street told police someone broke a screen window to gain entry while he was gone from about 5:30 to 11:15 p.m., according to a report.

Stolen items reportedly included a 52-inch TV, a 32inch TV, a laptop computer and its accessories, a jewelry box with miscellaneous gold and silver jewelry, various remote controls and $3,900.

About 11:50 p.m. Aug. 24, a resident in the 33W100

block of Toni Street reported seeing two subjects behind her house.

She believed they were male but couldn’t provide details other than they carried a light and one was in white and one wore black, according to a report.

The report indicated the resident reported the incident because of the recent burglaries in the neighborhood.

Walk to honor Bruce Conley, raise cash for children’s grief camp

Conley Outreach Community Services is sponsoring the event in memory of its founder, Bruce Conley, who created the bereavement aftercare nonprofit organization as an extension of the Conley Funeral Home in Elburn. Conley died Sept. 11, 2010.

The event will be at 2 p.m.

ecutive director of Conley Outreach Community Services, said the weeklong grief camp serves around 15 children, ages 6 to 12, who have lost a parent or sibling.

The day camp is during the last week of June.

“This was our sixth camp,” Alfrey said. “The first camp was actually held the summer before he [Bruce Conley] passed, so he was able to come down and visit.”

Alfrey said the grief camp for children was a dream of hers she wanted to start during Bruce Conley’s lifetime.

“My gift to Bruce was to get that put together,” Alfrey said. “Children grieve differently than adults. We’ve had campers who started with our very first year, who have gone all the way through until they age out at 12. They come back as junior counselors and help with the kids.”

The grief camp is held at McCannon Farm, the same location as the walk, Alfrey said.

“Camp costs $50 per child or $100 per family, but we have scholarships, so we do not turn anybody away,” Alfrey said. “What we raise from the walk helps with these scholarships.”

Although the day camp’s core service area is Kaneland and Big Rock, Alfrey said children from the surrounding communities would be welcome.

LOCAL BRIEF Pottawatomie Garden Club to meet Sept. 28

ST. CHARLES – The Pottawatomie Garden Club will meet Sept. 28 at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Cedar Ave., St. Charles.

Big cone returns to Alice’s Place

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A familiar landmark has returned to its rightful spot on top of an Elburn business.

The 9-foot tall, fiberglass ice cream cone was placed back on the roof Aug. 20 of Alice’s Place for the first time since 2013, said Audrey Hanson, owner of the restaurant at 208 S. Main St. in Elburn.

“People were all excited over Elburn Days to see it,” Hanson said. “The little kids, they just get so excited about it. That’s how they know my place, the ice cream shop with the big cone on top.”

Batavia resident Kevin Theisen, co-owner of Theisen Roofing in DeKalb, placed and secured the cone on the roof.

He previously installed a new roof on the restaurant in 1992, Hanson said. Theisen also plans to install a spotlight to shine on the cone to make it

more visible in the evening, Hanson said.

“He’s just all-around a good guy – it’s nice to have good friends like him,” Hanson said.

The cone had been out of sight since Nov. 13, 2013, when a storm blew it over. After a different, smaller cone placed on the roof was stolen in June, Elburn resident Dave Broz started a page on www.gofundme.com to raise money to return the original ice cream cone to the roof.

A total of $600 was raised, but Hanson has been reluctant to take any money. Hanson said she already filled out the village permit paperwork with $50 fee for the cone. Any money not used toward the big cone still is scheduled to go to the Elburn Food Pantry, Broz said.

“She’s a very humble person,” Broz said of Hanson.

“She’s done so much for so many people.”

** * Q: I received this lamp from my mother-in-law. It’s brass, has a pierced corrugated frame over a burner, and a small plaque on the front that has a wolf and reads “Permissible Miners Flame Safety Lamp, Safety Lamp Co. of America.” It also has a tag with the number 28 and a hook for hanging.

Can you tell me a little about its history and value?

A: You have a coal miner’s lamp, made by the Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of America of Brooklyn, N.Y. Until the development of safe electric lamps in the early 1900s, coal miners used flame lamps to provide light. Lamps with open flames could ignite flammable gas or dust and cause explosions, so

safety lamps were invented to enclose the flame. Before World War I, Wolf was a distributor for safety lamps made in Germany. After the war, the company made lamp tools and accessories and their own safety lamps that burned naphtha, vegetable oil and carbide. Wolf operated until the 1960s. Your lamp burned a mixture of carbide and water. The “permissible” engraved on the lamp means it passed safety tests and was approved by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (in 1921), and the hang tag represents the miner’s number. Your lamp is from the early 1920s and is worth about $100. * ** Q: I have a hand-painted plate marked with a crown above a circle with an eagle inside. The name of the company is written around the circle.

It looks like it might be Carrolton or Carrinton Pottery Co. Can you identify the maker?

A: Yes! The mark you describe is one of several used by Carrolltown Pottery Co., founded in Carrollton, Ohio, in 1903. It joined seven other potteries to form the American Chinaware Corporation in 1929. After the merger ended in 1931, Carrolltown Pottery continued to operate on its own until at least 1936.

Glass, pottery, bronze, silver and of course, paper and canvas, are all used to make important, and often expensive, works of art. But wood has been somewhat neglected as art, although highly regarded for useful furniture.

Eighteenth-century furniture was made with hand tools and decorated with carvings, inlay and the selection of attractive grain in the woods.

The nineteen century increased the amount of carved decoration. By the 1890s, there were Black Forest benches, tables, hall trees, and other furniture held by life-sized carved wooden bears. Twentieth-century craftsman and artist George Nakashima (19051990) made his unique wooden art furniture from slabs of wood. Wendell Castle (born 1932) made modern furniture, including a carved wooden coat and hat rack holding a wooden coat, and a park bench that appears to be growing from a tall tangle of vines.

Artists today are using wood to make sculptures, statues, puzzle boxes and huge burl bowls that are sold at art galleries, not furniture stores. Now is the time to start collecting wooden art.

There are artists making everything from realistic to abstract and science fiction inspired carvings. Go to art shows, or just browse the internet and find the carvings that you admire.

Trust your taste. There are caricatures, humorous figures, life-size statues and tiny imaginary animals. A talented Italian artist, Livio De Marchi, makes life-like carvings of everyday items.

He leaves them unpainted so the wood grain and defects will show. A golf bag with six clubs, a single piece

of carved wood, sold for $3,240 at a recent Skinner auction in Boston. *** Q: I have two gunpowder dispensers that I believe are from the Civil War era and belonged to a relative who fought in that war. One is made of copper and the other of leather. Both are in great condition and work well.

One still has grains of gunpowder in it. Is there any monetary or historical value to these items? I’m considering donating them to a museum.

A: First, get rid of the gunpowder!

Old explosives can be dangerous. You can take the powder flask to a gun range and ask them to dispose of the residual powder. Reenactors and people who collect Civil War memorabilia might be interested in your powder flasks, especially if you can give them information about your ancestor and his service in the Civil War. Powder flasks that are signed or have decoration sell for more than plain powder flasks. A signed copper Civil War powder flask sold for $47, and another for $135 recently. Leather powder flasks with historically significant decoration sell for $100 or more. *** Q: I recently bought a bankers chair

A: W.B. Moses opened a furniture store in Washington, D.C., in the 1860s. Business expanded and by 1898 W.B. Moses & Sons occupied several buildings, including shops and manufacturing facilities. To the Editor: This starts out as an old farmer’s memories.

As we go on, however, it will transform into something quite different.

Some farm fields were not as fallow as others.

Hills, side hills, gravely areas needed help.

The cows, steers, bulls, pigs all contributed.

Any animal raised on a farm was thankful for being fed.

The manure was their repayment and saying thank you.

So to raise enough crops to continue feeding them, their manure was returned to the needy areas of the farm.

The horses pulled the manure spreaders, over the hills, side hills and gravely areas,

spreading generously over the fields.

The smell was a pungent odor, never offensive to the farmer.

Even as children, we were never offended by the smell.

So to summarize, we spread manure to help the struggling crops, always looking for ways to improve the quality of their lives.

Now is the time to turn things around.

Let’s go to Springfield, Chicago, Washington.

Politicians of all parties.

The basis of this poem.

The lawmakers are not spreading the manure.

They are piling it up in their yards, fields, as it were.

The manure they are hoarding is the taxes they collect.

The taxpayers are the cows, steers, bulls, pigs all giving

back.

But the proceeds of their labor are not being used to help, the hills, side hills, the gravely areas, the poor, the helpless, the factory workers, all the hard working people.

How do the politicians expect to continue taxing us and never help?

That pile in their backyards is beginning to stink.

A really offensive odor is coming from Springfield, Chicago and Washington.

The best way to end this rant is by using an old saying.

Not all, mind you, but certainly most, is by saying: The politicians are full of ... manure!

GIRLS SWIMMING SEASON PREVIEW

St. Charles North tries to take next step this season

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Of the few things written on the St. Charles North girls swim team’s whiteboard in the entrance to natatorium, one specific item has been reiterated several times.

Coach Rob Rooney stressed it, the girls understood it and is the main focus of the team this season: “COMMON GOAL.” It remains displayed, and has for several days, because Rooney and the girls believe it will be the key to taking the next step as a program.

After finishing fifth at last year’s state meet, the program returns each of its state qualifiers, and wants more. North will look no further than its senior leaders, one being Monica Guyett.

“Just making sure we have a common goal and everyone knows what we’re trying to strive for,” Guyett said of the key to the team success.

“Coach Rooney has written that on the board several times this year, and I think it has really stuck with us. If everyone has a good work ethic in and out of the pool, we believe we will get to where we want to be.”

Guyett is one of four individual state qualifiers returning to the North Stars, along with her sister, Audrey, Samantha Sauer, and sophomore Jillian Waslawski. Senior Grace Samuelson is also someone Rooney said is “admired by her peers for outstanding work ethic.”

North also returns members from each of its three relays from state, the 200-yard freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley.

The girls and Rooney arrive at North around 5:30 a.m. each day for training, whether it be lifting weights or other strength and conditioning exercises. After school, the girls start their practices with jumping rope for various intervals, followed by swimming.

Rooney said the girls are usually at the school until about 5:30 p.m., to finish off a 12-hour day. But to get where St. Charles swimming used to be, Rooney says this is what it takes.

“We really want to take the next step,” Rooney said. “Back in the ’80s and ’90s, St. Charles was where swimming was in this state. Both [St. Charles East] and North have had some very good teams over the last 15 years, but both of us have been trying to claw back into the mix.

“It’s going to take some sacrifices. There’s no lie about it; in the state of Illinois, you need three relays. NOTEWORTHY Milling about a popular course

Yes, Mill Creek Golf Club hosts many Geneva boys and girls events each season, but its longstanding reputation as a destination for recreational rounds and summer junior tournaments adds up for the competition.

Asked to assess the Vikings’ homecourse advantage during Thursday’s Geneva Invitational at Mill Creek, Geneva’s Andrew Abel ventured off the beaten path a bit.

“I don’t think it really makes a difference, because, I mean, you still have to hit the golf shots, you know,” Abel said.

As usual, visitors relished the opportunity to play the course at the invitational, which traditionally has provided an early-season litmus test.

Last week’s unseasonably cool temperatures augmented the atmosphere and the challenge of navigating the slower, smoother greens.

“It’s challenging, for one, just because I’m not really used to these kinds of greens and stuff,” Batavia’s Sam Glore said. “But the greens are good, and it just looks really, really cool.”

Never a doubt

Burlington Central endured a culture change with the retirement of longtime boys and girls coach Deb Twenhafel after the 2014-15 school year.

But the landscape has shifted closely in step with athletic officials’ original plans; Tom Davies, Twenhafel’s former assistant, took over the boys program, leaving a vacancy for the girls team that Kyle Nelson eventually filled.

“Tom was going to move over there to the boys and someone take over girls program,” Nelson said.

Admittedly still in the early phases of gauging players’ skills and personalities, Nelson enjoyed something else

in common with the girls right off the bat. Participating in a glow-in-the-dark golf event at Valley Green in North Aurora on Aug. 22 brought Nelson, a former golfer at Hinsdale South, back to a similar competition earlier in his recreational days.

“I’ve played in one before and they’re a lot of fun,” Nelson said.

So far, so good

Kaneland boys coach Mark Meyer entered the season with plenty of enthusiasm about freshman Will Marshall.

“It’s kind of exciting to have a freshman playing up,” Meyer said.

Beneficial, too. On Thursday, Marshall shot an 80 at the Geneva Invitational, finishing third on the team behind Jake Hed (72) and Brett Glennon (77) as the Knights placed ninth among 19 teams.

“I didn’t run my varsity.

Williging, who finished first for us, is my No. 10 runner,” Arenberg said. “It’s a chance to let the JV girls run in varsity and see how they respond.”

Bartlett (113) and East Aurora (121) finished third and fourth in the 10-team girls race.

Bartlett and Dundee-Crown tied for fourth with 99 points in the boys race.

ELGIN – No sophomore slump for St. Charles North girls cross country runner Audrey Ernst.

Ernst, who ended her freshman season last fall placing 13th in the IHSA Class 3A state meet, finished first in Tuesday’s Elgin City Classic at Lords Park. Her time of 18:00 on the 3-mile course was two seconds better than last year’s first-place finish.

The North Stars placed two other runners in the top 10 to take first place – for the fifth year in a row – with a score of 35.

Juniors Madison Kaufmann (19:25) and Allie Chen (20:54) came in second and sixth, respectively.

“The weather was not ideal, but it was exciting because this is the first race of the season,” said Ernst, who led the race from start to finish. ”My strategy was pretty much to go out as fast as I could. I’ve been really working to keep up that speed the rest of the race.”

“She is in phenomenal shape, she’s in season and ready to go,” North coach Shari Hayes said of Ernst.

“Madison also ran really well.

She really loves this course.

It’s her favorite.”

North finished second in the boys race behind East Aurora. North tallied 77 points to the Tomcats’ 29. Jose Rangel, a senior, took top honors for North, finishing in seventh with a time of 16:55. Teammate Michael Boone (17:06) came in 10th.

“I didn’t know until just a minute ago that we finished second. I had no idea,” said North boys coach Kevin Harrington when congratulated on his team’s result. “This meet, we just stressed running comfortably, and they felt pretty good. It will be nice to see when I tell them to dig in a little bit.”

Cougars’ playoff push intensifies

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com The Cougars reduced their magic number for clinching the Midwest League’s second-half Western Division title to four with Monday’s comeback victory against Beloit.

Already assured of an opportunity to defend the franchise’s 2014 Midwest League championship, the club remains eager to officially eliminate its nearest pursuer, Peoria, from division contention before the Chiefs visit this weekend for a three-game series to close the regular season.

“Everybody’s calm,” closer Zac Curtis said. “We still have that drive. We want to win the division. It’s not just getting into the playoffs. You want to get the No. 1 seed, so you want to have the home-field advantage. Peoria’s a good team, but I think if we just stick to how we know we can play, we’ll get it.”

The Cougars, in their first

year as a Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks after two seasons aligned with the Cubs, will begin the playoffs against Peoria on Sept. 9 no matter their division finish.

Winning the division means earning home-field advantage in the best-of-three first round, putting the Cougars on the road in the opener but at home for Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) on Sept. 10 and 11.

Should Peoria catch the Cougars, the opposite scenario would occur.

“We’ve still got to come out and compete, because the last thing you want to do is treat this as a vacation. Just kind of cash it in, and then playoffs come around and you haven’t been playing meaningful games,” second baseman Cody Regis said. “It’s going to catch up to you real quick. So you’ve got to treat every game from here on out like it’s a playoff game.”

“There’s people that take one, but I feel like in that area, you can like either one,” Munoz said. “People aren’t like, ‘No, you’ve got to be a Dodger fan. You’ve got to be an Angel fan.’ Everybody likes them. I mean, I like them both.”

Until further notice, howev-

er, Munoz’s loved ones plan to follow a different path.

“My family always messes around with it, saying, ‘Alright, well, we’re rooting for the Dodgers until you make it to the big leagues. Then we’ll root for the Diamondbacks,’ ” Munoz said.

Gearing up: The Cougars previously qualified for postseason play in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999 to 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 to 2011 and 2014.

“We’re just looking forward to the playoffs. We’re looking forward to hopefully winning another championship,” general manager Curtis Haug said. “That would be cool. Back-to-back. The team is outstanding. They’ve been great to work with. The field staff … all great guys to work with. So it would be really cool to bring home another championship, so we’re looking forward to it.”

The Cougars have won at least one round in seven of their 14 previous playoff appearances.

On Thursday, however, he felt equally at home on No. 8. Prentiss aced the 140-yard hole using a pitching wedge, easily the highlight of his or any other round at the Geneva Invitational. His father, St. Charles North coach Rob Prentiss, witnessed the shot, too.

Powered by sophomore Matthew Richtman’s fifth-place finish in 16:22, the Knights placed second among 14 teams with 73 points. Belvidere North had a team score of 67.

“We were very surprised to have such a good start to our season,” Knights coach Chad Clarey wrote in an email. “We usually need a few races to get our bearings. The two up front helped us out considerably.”

Senior Austin Kintz followed Richtman with a seventh-place run in 16:36. Sean Spaetzel (17:18) and Noah Duffey (17:27) finished 17th and 18th, respectively.

“It was a nice start,” Clarey wrote, “but our team’s goals lie in the finish to the season. There are no easy roads through northern Illinois cross country.”

Burlington Central finished ninth with 235 points. Nick Harvey paced the Rockets, taking 16th in 17:16.

In the girls race, St. Francis (seventh, 172) and Burlington Central (eighth, 182) rounded out the eight-team field. Belvidere North won with 50 points.

Megan Safranski took ninth for BC in 21:01. Leila Kral was St. Francis’ top runner, placing 16th in 21:34.

Dear Abby: I was recently the

target of a romance scam on a popular singles website. After being a divorcee for 15 years, I decided to try online dating. Minutes after I went online, someone asked to chat. He said he was a widower and a jeweler by trade, living near me but returning to Florida the next day with ultimate plans to relocate to my area.

He mentioned he was originally from Germany and had an accent. We chatted on Google Hangouts, and he sent me sweet emails every morning saying how much he loved meeting me and that it was “our time to have a second chance.”

After three weeks of chatting but only a short, garbled phone conversation, he asked for a favor. He was attending a jewelry show and needed me to send his diamond supplier money to pay for a shipment. He made it sound urgent and gave me a name and address in Ghana where he could

All along I had kept my guard up, but his request confirmed for me that it was a scam. When I Googled the Ghana name and address, it came back “Ghana Scammer.”

Abby, these people even provided photos of the person they pretended to be, along with a cellphone and address that actually were under the name of the person they were impersonating.

A couple of telltale signs people should be aware of: First, if you don’t talk to them or their cellphone seems to have a very bad connection, it’s likely they aren’t in the country. Second, if you can’t meet in person, it’s likely they’re pretending to be someone else.

about these types of scams. – Loveless In Washington Dear Loveless: Gladly! Thank you for writing about your nearmiss, because many trusting people have been victimized in this way. Phone and online scams have more than proliferated this year; they appear to have metastasized.

No less than five individuals I know have been approached by scammers trying to lure them into money-losing “propositions.”

Two of them were told they were having problems with their tax returns. (Not true.) Two others got the, “Grandma, please don’t tell my parents, but I’m in jail and need bail money,” phone calls.

One of the women is childless; the other told the caller: “That’s funny. You didn’t mention it when I talked to you two hours ago.” (The caller hung up on her.)

Complications following cataract surgery are rare Dear Doctor K: I am having cataract surgery in a few weeks.

Can you describe the possible complications?

Dear Reader: A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. As the condition worsens, you may experience blurred or dim vision, increased glare, double vision, nearsightedness and worsening night vision.

Surgery is the only effective cure. During cataract surgery, the doctor removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens. (I’ve put an illustration of the procedure on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Cataract surgery is generally very safe. I know, because I’ve had it. But all operations involve some risk. Following are some potential complications: • Eye infection. You will receive antibiotics before, during and after surgery to minimize this risk.

If you do develop an infection (symptoms include red, swollen, painful eyes and a decline in vision), see your doctor right away.

• Swelling and fluid in the retina.

Symptoms include blurred or reduced central vision. This can be treated with steroid injections or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drops.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Swelling of the clear covering of the eye (the cornea). You may notice

blurred vision or halos around lights. This complication is often temporary.

• Bleeding inside the eye. You may see blood or have blurred vision and floaters. Bleeding often clears on its own. Occasionally, surgery is needed to clear the bleeding.

• Retinal detachment. This rare complication, in which the retina pulls away from the blood vessels that supply it, is an emergency.

It can be treated successfully if brought immediately to the attention of the eye doctor.

• Increased glare. This can be temporary or permanent.

• Dislocation of the replacement lens. If the lens shifts out of place,

it may need to be repositioned during a second surgical procedure.

• Clouding of the lens capsule. The capsule is the thin, clear membrane that surrounds the lens. It’s the pouch inside of which the lens sits. Clouding of this membrane

is usually not a significant problem and can be treated with laser surgery, if needed.

• Increased pressure in the eye.

Medications can usually control the pressure.

• Astigmatism. Distorted images, caused by irregular curving of the cornea, can be managed with glasses or surgery.

• Strabismus. Your eyes will be crossed, they won’t focus on the same object at the same time, or you’ll have double vision. This is sometimes temporary. If it is permanent, it can be treated with eyeglass modifications or, rarely, eye muscle surgery.

• Drooping of the upper eyelid. If the drooping is severe, it can be treated with lid muscle surgery.

Maybe you read this list of possible complications and thought, “It sounds like the surgery does more harm than good!” Don’t get cold feet. These complications are unusual and treatable. When I had cataract surgery, I didn’t have any of these complications – and nor do most people.

Will love come after marriage?

Dr. Wallace: A simple yes or no is all I need. I respect your advice, so please give my question some serious thought.

My fiance is 22, and he is a wonderful guy.

He is brilliant academically and graduated from Princeton with honors. He comes from a well-to-do family and is now working on an advanced degree in mathematics at Yale. He wants to earn his Ph.D. and teach at the college level.

I’m 20 and in my third year at the University of Massachusetts and plan to be an elementary school teacher. My fiance plans for us to get married soon after I earn my bachelor’s degree in June 2016.

All of my friends and family consider him to be everything a girl could want, and they all tell me that I’m a lucky lady to have him for my fiance. I’ll admit that he really is near perfect, but I don’t love him. Dr. Wallace: One of my close friends was invited by a guy to go to a party. She decided that he had too much to drink, and she refused to let him drive her

When I heard this, it really made me angry.

My friend did the right thing, and her parents should have been glad that she arrived home safely from this date.

I wonder how they might feel if they were put in my shoes. My brother was never involved with alcohol.

He was active in our church and was a great guy and a wonderful brother. Just over a year ago, he was in the same situation, but instead of calling home for a ride, he got in the car with his friend who had been drinking.

Shortly afterward, and only about a mile from home, he was killed in a car accident.

I only wish he had called me. I would have picked him up no matter what time it was!

Evan Esar, a humorist who died in 1995, said, “A signature always reveals a man’s character – and sometimes even his name.”

A bridge bid (at least in theory) always reveals something about your hand – not only to partner, but also to the opponents. This makes it a double-edged sword.

You hope it will help your side to reach the best contract, but not give the defenders sufficient information to defeat you.

This deal occurred during a social game. Look at the North hand. Your partner opens one notrump, showing 15-17 points. What would you respond?

In my opinion, there is a strong case for raising straight to three no-trump. You have honors in both of your doubletons and a strong five-card minor. It is true that if you have a 4-4 spade fit and can make game in that suit but not in no-trump, you had better use Stayman. But the odds are against that. And here, if you use Stayman, you tell the defenders that partner has four hearts and you have four spades.

You are more likely to attract a diamond lead than the major-suit lead that would be almost certain after one no-trump – three notrump.

Here, if North does not use Stayman, West will probably lead a heart, after which the contract makes easily. Declarer just plays low from the dummy to set up a minimum of two spades, two hearts and five clubs.

After a Stayman auction, West might well start with the diamond nine, which kills the contract.

Yes, if he chooses a spade, not a heart, the contract should also fail, but keeping the opponents in the dark is often beneficial.
