Celebrities seen near Hotel Baker

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The area of downtown St. Charles near Hotel Baker was filled with onlookers for most of the weekend as word spread of a celebrity wedding with some celebrity guests.

Many news outlets reported that entertainers Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg would be married over the Labor Day weekend in New York. But then the couple was photographed walking into the Hotel Baker in St. Charles on Friday.

The weekend continued with more candid photos and sightings of celebrities, including Wahlberg’s mother, Alma, on Saturday on the First Street Plaza and Sherri Shepherd, McCarthy’s former co-host on “The View,” on Sunday, said Sharon Wells of South Elgin.

Wells said Shepherd was dropped off about 2:30 p.m.

The Kane County Chronicle could not independently verify the account of Wells and other sources, but their sightings were corroborated by other onlookers who also took photos of the same people.

Shepherd had indicated on her official Instagram account that she was catching an early flight to attend McCarthy’s wedding. She later tweeted from the wedding on her Twitter account.

Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny McCarthy were spotted on Friday afternoon going into the Hotel Baker. two of her co-workers at St. Charles-based SmartSource.

Her co-workers attended a sales meeting at a hotel on St. Charles’ east side and heard from some hotel staff members that their building would serve overflow guests for the celebrities’ wedding.

Wells said she even saw the bride herself on Saturday night from outside of one of the Rox City Grill windows.

“You could see Jenny [McCarthy] though the window,” Wells said. “The security kicked us out ... we were right up against the glass.”

There was a noticeable security presence outside of Hotel Baker all weekend, which continued to intensify on Sunday, when the sidewalk on the north side of Main Street was closed off from the east end of the Main Street bridge outside of the St. Charles Municipal Center to right before the

northeast corner of Main and Second streets.

Two St. Charles police officers flanked the east and west sides of the hotel, and St. Charles police squad cars continually moved up and down Main Street in front of the hotel. A black unmarked squad was parked near the west end of the bridge most of Sunday afternoon.

Cathy Skinner of Elgin said she and other onlookers were on the north sidewalk before it was closed off about 2:20 p.m. Sunday, about 10 minutes before Shepherd’s reported arrival. Jordan Knight, one of Wahlberg’s New Kids on the Block bandmates, was outside of the hotel about 2 p.m., Skinner said.

Skinner heard about the wedding from her friends, who had been outside of the hotel on Saturday. Then, she read about it in the Sunday

papers.

Skinner was near the hotel for about five hours Sunday, ready to take pictures of any possible celebrities with her iPhone. She was joined on the south side of Main Street by several other people and cameramen from two different Chicago TV stations.

The activity also was great for surrounding businesses in downtown St. Charles. The outside dining area of Zaza’s Italian Steakhouse, located across Main Street from Hotel Baker, was noticeably full nearly all weekend.

Keaton O’Connor, a server at McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub across from the hotel, couldn’t figure out whether the increased business was from the holiday or the wedding. He said guests from the wedding, some with recognizable and often-photographed faces, patronized the pub all weekend. He declined to give names but said they obliged when other patrons asked to take photos with them.

People like Wells sat inside of McNally’s next to the windows Sunday afternoon in the hopes of seeing someone famous across the street at the hotel.

“It’s fun,” Wells said.

“What else are you going to do on a holiday weekend?”

Toy and Food Run on Oct. 12 in Elburn

WHAT: The 28th annual DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run WHEN: Oct. 12 WHERE: The parade will start at Knucklehead’s at North Street and Route 47 in Elburn.

Folk fest brings in crowds On the Web

GENEVA – Though Sunday started out cloudy and drizzly, it did not stop die-hard folk fans from coming to the second day of the Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival at Island Park in Geneva.

“It was raining when we left Chicago,” said Kathleen McGrory of Chicago.

By the time she and her husband, Dan McGrory, arrived in Geneva, however, the drizzle had dried up, and blue skies and sunshine provided a bright venue for the 38th annual event.

It was their 15th year attending the two-day festival, and they said they would not miss it for anything.

“I love everything,” Kathleen McGrory said. “The music, the people, the grounds, the crowds. Everything.”

Anne Hills, a touring musician from Bethany, Pennsylvania, who plays guitar and banjo, said she has been attending and performing at the festival for about 15 years.

“I come to this festival because you’ll hear different kinds of music by all levels of musicians,” Hills said, taking a moment between performances. “It’s a beautiful setting and very low key, very laid back.”

Richard Pniewski of Thornton said he’s been coming to the festival every year since 1985.

“It’s a terrific weekend.”

Among the groups with a booth at the festival was Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice, promoting a rally for awareness of climate change.

That event is set for 3:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at Kimball Street and Grove Avenue in Elgin with a march to Church of the Brethren, 783 W. Highland Ave. A potluck supper is scheduled to mark the first anniversary of Elgin being named an International City of Peace.

“I’m just trying to create awareness about climate change,” said Nadia Daley of South Elgin, as she passed out leaflets announcing the rally to passers-by.

Fire at Dean Street home causes $5,000 in damage KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue responded Monday morning to a single-family residence in the 39W070 block of Dean Street in St. Charles for a reported fire.

Responders were dispatched to the home at 7:36 a.m. Monday for a reported small fire that the homeowner had extinguished, according to a news release from Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue.

Upon arrival, crews investigated and found that active fire remained in an exterior wall, the release states. An extensive overhaul of the wall area was required to locate and extinguish all flames.

According to the release, a citronella candle had been left burning outside the previous night in a flower tray that was attached to the home under a window. The candle had ignited other materials, including lawn furniture, and the fire spread to interior cavities of the exterior wall, damaging structural components, the release states.

A homeowner found the fire Monday morning and attempted to control it with a garden hose, prior to contacting the fire department, according to the release.

An exterior wall of the kitchen was damaged, with smoke damage throughout home, the release states.

No one was injured in the incident. Damage was estimated to be $5,000.

Holy Cross Catholic School in Batavia will expand its facilities this year. An addition with four new classrooms will open later this month, said Holy Cross Principal Tricia Weis.

Holy Cross enrollment this year is 418 students from preschool through eighth grade, Weis said. She confirmed that some Holy Cross students used to attend St. Peter School, but she said the majority come from public schools.

In some cases, students that used to attend St. Patrick might end up transferring to St. Peter School, and vice versa, Ryan said. Families could move or be transferred around the area, or they might opt for another school if their child is stuck on a waiting list at their initial school of choice, Ryan said.

Ryan said the local parochial schools are not in competition with one another and that they all exist to provide

children an education with Catholic teachings.

“Faith is at the top of the list, and our academics are very strong,” Ryan said.

Elburn resident Garrett Burt said he looked at all three area Catholic schools a few years ago for his two sons before choosing St. Peter.

He said St. Patrick and Holy Cross were nice, but felt the St. Peter curriculum and the teachers’ knowledge of it superseded the other schools.

Burt wants his sons to get a good education first and foremost, and he wasn’t happy at the conclusion of a May 22 school-wide parent meeting with Emeh, Johnson and the St. Peter staff in the St. Peter gym. Burt had pre-registered his sons for this school year, but considered withdrawing the paperwork given the recent exit of Neis as principal.

Burt said he was concerned at the time that the church and the Rockford Diocese would make decisions for the school, but he was reassured that Johnson would be allowed to lead. A lack of communication was replaced with an ongoing dialogue between Burt and Johnson about developing a team to further define the school’s mission for the next few years.

“I want [St. Peter School] to

be the best for my kids and the kids that come after them,” Burt said.

The school has refined its virtual communications as well. This year, every grade is part of a parent portal where families can receive and send messages, as well as access grades and information about their children in one place.

Janine Augustyn of North Aurora has four children at St. Peter – two are in grades with two classroom sections, and two are in grades that use a co-teacher model. Co-teachers assist teachers by taking on some of the students in single-section grades so everyone can receive more individualized instruction in core subjects, such as math and language arts, Johnson said.

Augustyn said the last school year was a hard one for the community as it dealt with the transition to a new principal and changes in classroom size. She is grateful for Johnson’s efforts to turn things around.

The Augustyns enrolled their oldest child – now a college student – at St. Peter 16 years ago, and they don’t plan on leaving the school anytime soon.

“My kids love it here,” Janine Augustyn said. “It feels like home.”

“It was probably our biggest year,” she said at the end of the party.

Event organizer Batavia MainStreet had to sell unused cups from its previous block parties to accommodate everyone, said Fricano, who is the assistant to Joi Cuartero, Batavia MainStreet’s executive director.

The Batavia Block Party offered a range of food, live music, a children’s play area hosted by River City Church, and other activities. This is the second straight year the party has been held on both sides of the Fox River.

Groundbreaking set for The Quad The Krausz Companies purchased the mall site in November 2013 for more than $9.5 million.

At the time, the company announced plans to rename the mall, transform its appearance and add new tenants.

According to a news release, the redevelopment project is expected to be completed by 2016.

Frank A. Fregulia, 76, of Elburn, IL and formerly of Petaluma, CA passed away August 30, 2014, at his home.

He was born March 3, 1938, in Penngrove, CA the son of John and Caroline (Sorensen) Fregulia. He was united in marriage to Janet Higgins November 7, 1964, in Carmel, CA. Frank was employed by Pacific Gas and Electric and retired in 1997. In the 1950’s he was well known for his talent as an accordion player. Frank donated countless hours of playing accordion at hospitals and charity functions. In 1959, he joined the Loyal Order of the Moose in Petaluma Lodge 475 sponsored by his father.

In 1989, Frank was elevated to the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest honor of the Moose fraternity, and served as the class representative.

Most of all Frank will be remembered for his kind and loving nature and his wonderful personality.

Frank is survived by his wife Jan of Elburn; a son, Frank (Daniela) Fregulia, Jr. of Newport News, VA; a daughter, Donna D. Fregulia, of Elburn; a grandson, John James Fregulia; and a sister, Dorothy Atkisson of San Antonio, TX. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother John R. Love, marriage and bad studies that say nothing

By NOAH SMITH Bloomberg News Gosh, am I tired of the pop-sociology and pop-psychology studies popping up in my news feed. Almost every one of these has severe limitations that get ignored in the hype.

I’m going to pick on one example. According to a new study by the National Marriage Project, your love life before you get married is crucial to your chances of having a successful marriage.

If you have a child before marriage, or a large number of sex partners or if you begin your relationship with your spouse by hooking up, then – according to this study – your marriage has a lower chance of success.

Sounds plausible, right?

But this study suffers from

most of the garden-variety empirical problems that economists learn to recognize early in school.

The most famous empirical problem is that correlation doesn’t equal causation.

The National Marriage Project study makes a claim along the lines of “X is associated with Y.” That phrase, “associated with,” means “correlated with.” For example, the NMP study said – we discovered that having more guests at the wedding is associated with higher marital quality.

So to improve the quality of American marriages, we should just hire a bunch of people to fill out the guest list at every wedding, right?

Right. There are two basic ways that correlation can lead you astray. The first is reverse causality. There’s a

correlation between roosters crowing and the sunrise, but that doesn’t mean roosters summon the sun. In the NMP study, this actually isn’t much of a concern.

The second danger is omitted variables. These are things that cause both X and Y separately, but which the person doing the study didn’t think about. For example, the NMP study finds that people who wait to have sex later tend to have higher marital quality. That’s a correlation.

Does it mean that if you choose to wait longer to have sex, you will have higher marital quality? Not necessarily.

Another big problem that plagues studies like this is selection bias. This is when your sample is not chosen randomly. In the case of this NMP study, it’s a serious

flaw.

The NMP study concludes that people who had a child before their current marriage are less likely to have a successful marriage. But those children didn’t arrive randomly out of thin air. They represent the existence of a previous failed relationship.

To make an analogy, suppose I wanted to test whether having taken the bar exam in the past makes you more or less likely to fail it in the future. So I select a bunch of law graduates and measure their scores on the test. Lo and behold, I find that the people who are taking the test for the second or third time tend to fail more than those who are taking it for the first time. I conclude that experience actually makes you worse at the bar exam.

But this conclusion is

absurd. The people taking the test for the first time are a random sample, but the people taking the bar exam for the second or third time are retaking it because they all failed it the first time. Even if experience helps you pass the bar, my study will show the exact opposite.

Now the NMP study’s conclusions still might be right, but if they’re wrong, they could damage the very cause they want to promote.

In general, I think the glut of overhyped social-science correlation studies in our newsfeeds is doing us no favors.

Cougars fall in regular-season finale Midwest League playoff schedule

The Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Peoria grinded its way back into the game.

The Chiefs (72-67) scored the game-winning run in the top of the 12th on a wild pitch

The Cougars (91-49) set a franchise record for most wins in a year. Manager Mark Johnson was impressed that his team showed no quit throughout the season.

“It is just been an absolute incredible ride,” Johnson said, “These players and the staff ... they have brought it every day.”

The Cougars used six pitchers in the loss with starter Paul Blackburn (9-4, 3.23 ERA) only throwing two innings in an attempt to rest him for the playoffs. He allowed one hit and walked one.

The late August thunderstorms that postponed season openers for the second straight year are one thing.

Even before the latest severe weather threats rolled through the region, teams had grown acclimated to dealing with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s after a summer of near-idyllic weather.

“Oh, yeah. It wipes out all my old coaches. They’re all dragging,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski grinned. “Yeah, it takes a little bit of a toll and it takes a little bit of adjusting to. And you have to be careful as a coach and handle your business.”

Given that this is Illinois high school football, players aren’t exactly laboring through heat for the first time.

Still, a comparatively mild summer and first week of fall camp was on the verge of spoiling some.

“It’s definitely been a little bit of a shock to the system,” St. Charles East coach Bryce Farquhar said, “but they’re adjusting well.”

Gay’s boss, fourth-year Batavia coach Dennis Piron, at least appreciates the heatwave’s mid-August arrival.

In recent seasons, sweltering temperatures moved in only a day or two before the season kicked off, amplifying what already is an urgent setting on the field no matter what’s happening outdoors.

“You just can’t duplicate game conditions,” Piron said, “so as much as the kids hydrate and drink water and Gatorade and get their rest and sleep and you kind of condition them for the elements, game conditions are so different. And you’re going to have cramping and you’re going to have attrition and you’re going to have issues.

So you just have to be prepared for that come game time.”

‘We never really left’ Several Kaneland assistants played for eighth-year coach Tom Fedderly or longtime predecessor Joe Thorgesen, a reality that isn’t lost on the current Knights.

“They know we played,” Class of 2005 alumnus Mike Thorgesen said, “and I think it says a lot that a lot of guys came back. … They know that we have a lot of pride in being alumni from Kaneland. We love the program, and you know, we never really left.”

Mike Thorgesen, Joe’s son, downplays his role on Friday nights. He’s chiefly a coach on the lower levels, but helps any defensive staff in the press box during the varsity game.

That group is headed by Class of 1999 alumnus Keith Snyder, the Knights’ defensive coordinator and a member of the school’s back-to-back Class 3A state champions in 1997 and 1998.

Quarterbacks coach Eric Delaney was Snyder’s teammate then. Other Knights athletes turned coaches include Ryan Gierke (wide receivers/defensive backs) and Marcus Goedken (defensive line).

“We try to instill the tough-guy mentality and that kind of stuff as far as kids being tough,” Gierke said. “That’s kind of the Kaneland way, you know. It’s not always easy and you’ve got to the able to take the good with the bad.”

ST. CHARLES NORTH’S DEFENSE What North did: Limited Elk Grove to 156 yards of total offense in a season-opening, 13-2 victory. The North Stars established their physicality early, and only allowed points on a safety when the Grenadiers ‘D’ sacked North quarterback Kyle Novotney in the end zone.

HITTING REWIND Batavia coach Dennis Piron promised lefty Evan Acosta and righty Kyle Niemiec both would take snaps at quarterback during the season opener against Oswego.

Piron delivered, and so did the duo, with both keeping the Bulldogs competitive in what turned out to be a wild 40-38 loss for the defending Class Dennis Piron 6A state champions.

Acosta played the first half and the first series of the third quarter before Piron sensed the offense needed a jolt and made a change.

“They’ll both continue to play all year long,” Piron said. “We believe in both kids, and I think that Kyle brought a nice deal of energy to the table and was kind of a change of pace for [Oswego’s defense], a righty, and kind of got them on their heels a little bit again.”

Offensively, Spaniol rushed 11 times for 37 yards as North spread the carries around in the absence of featured back Dom Sidari.

Sidari and standout linebacker Carson Schmitt both played in the first quarter Friday but were held out Saturday after suffering what Pomazak said were minor injuries that wouldn’t sideline them long.

The win was especially impressive for North considering the absences of Sidari and Schmitt plus cornerback Tyler Bell and safety Nick Zamecnik, who are expected to bolster an already impressive-looking secondary when

they return.

“We all really trust each other, and plus we’ll be having Tyler Bell come back and Nick Zamecnik come back, so we’ll be even tougher and deeper,” Joyce said.

Novotney (21 carries, 68 yards) was North’s leading rusher.

Novotney’s varsity debut at QB was more of a mixed bag in the passing game. However he connected with receiver Jayson Reckards on a thirdand-8 play from Elk Grove’s 22-yard line for a 21-yard gain that set up a 1-yard touchdown on a QB keeper, providing the back-breaking score with 1:55 to play in the fourth quarter.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North football players spent much of the layover from Friday night’s lightning postponement to the resumption of their season opener against Elk Grove on Saturday together.

“We all wanted to stay together and stay focused, so after the game we went to a teammate’s house and everyone was there, we had pizza,” North junior cornerback/receiver Brendan Joyce said.

“Woke up early this morning, got here early. We stayed focused and stayed together the entire time, so it wasn’t a big deal for us.”

With a game to play the next afternoon, the North Stars had to keep their pizza intake modest. North looked light on its feet once action resumed as the North Stars kept Elk Grove’s offense bottled up throughout North’s 13-2 victory.

North led, 6-0, after the first quarter when play was halted by lightning Friday night.

sive points until less than two minutes remained Saturday, although the North Stars had more prime chances.

North junior safety Jake Spaniol turned in a pair of crucial plays late in the third quarter to keep the Grenadiers at bay.

Somehow, Batavia quarterback Kyle Niemiec managed.

After a staggering ending that packed quite the emotional wallop, Niemiec embraced the brilliance he had just been part of, heartache and all.

Batavia and Oswego scored two touchdowns apiece in the final two minutes. The Panthers’ final score came with no time on the clock, a 24-yard TD pass from Steven Frank to Joseph Hennessy to give the Panthers a 40-38 win as wild as they come.

“Sure, we would have loved to win this game, but what happened on the field tonight was amazing,” Niemiec said. “And it just shows the potential we have throughout the season.”

In the first game for Batavia since last year’s IHSA Class 6A state championship conquest, fans were treated to maximum entertainment value – especially because no admission was charged in the aftermath of Friday night’s lightning postponement.

Not this night. Not even close.

Frank, a junior Division I prospect for the Panthers, needed only two passes to cover 64 yards for a rapid Oswego response, including a 13-yard TD connection with Ryan Hennessy, and the Panthers led, 3431, with 1:05 to play.

Starting field position near midfield allowed the Bulldogs to swiftly surge within striking distance for last-minute theatrics. A pass interference call – a frequent nemesis for Oswego on the night – put the ball at Oswego’s 37, and the Bulldogs crept within Oswego’s 17 with 29 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Niemiec fired to junior Canaan Coffey (13 receptions for 172 yards), who was wide

open after an Oswego defender in front of him stumbled.

The Bulldogs were back in front, 38-34, and the Bulldog Stadium crowd howled its approval.

“As soon as I released, it just worked out well,” Niemiec said.

“Canaan, I knew that I could trust him. I’ve always trusted him, and luckily [the defender] fell down and made it easier on Canaan. I knew he was going to make the play.”

After the ensuing kickoff, only 20 seconds remained, and crazy as the game was going, it seemed unthinkable that Oswego had time to conjure another score, especially with the Panthers forced to start from their own 20-yard line and the first play of the sequence an incompletion.

But two Frank completions and a critical face mask penalty after the second catch afforded the Panthers one final, untimed play with the clock entirely drained from Batavia’s 24-yard line.

“I’m sure there was a penalty. There must have been.

They were a good crew,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “It was just disappointing to have the game won, it’s over, he’s tackled, it’s done, and then to have a penalty there.”

AURORA – A combination of efficient offensive playmaking and big defensive stops gave Geneva a 41-23 victory over West Aurora on Saturday.

The Vikings made maximum use of the 48 plays they ran, 12 fewer than the Blackhawks, scoring on six of their nine possessions.

On defense, a fumble recovery, an interception and a denied fourth-down conversion halted West Aurora drives.

The teams played Saturday as their Friday night season opener was postponed by inclement weather.

Time ran out on Geneva before it could complete the last series of the first half, but the team only punted twice, both times in the fourth quarter.

Mike Huck made the first defensive stop when he recovered a West Aurora fumble at Geneva’s 27-yard line in the second quarter with Geneva holding only a 14-3 lead.

The next Brooks possession resulted in an interception, leaving Kaneland with another relatively short starting position from the Eagles’ 40.

The Knights drove down and eventually Marczuk found Connor Fedderly for the 4-yard score with 9:49 remaining in the second quarter.

Brooks put itself right back in the hole three plays later when Kaneland recovered another fumble on the Eagles’ 10-yard line. The next play Marczuk and Connor Fedderly struck again, boosting the lead to 20-0 after the extra point.

Fedderly was proud that his team was able to overcome its slow start.

“We’re pretty happy; we came out with a bunch of new players, didn’t really know how this season would be,” Connor Fedderly said. “We made some mistakes early, but I was really happy that we kept our heads up and kept going. We played pretty good.”

Kaneland fumbled three times in its first three possessions, but then settled down late in the first quarter and was in control from Tom Fedderly there.

Just like people, all animals need three things to survive: food, water and shelter.

I am a brown pelican—the state bird of Louisiana. Not too many years ago, all of the brown pelicans in Louisiana died out.

Why? Our food, mostly fish, became poisoned by pesticides.

Fortunately farmers no longer use these poisons and brown pelicans were brought from Florida to start new colonies in Louisiana.

We pellies like to nest in colonies—large groups of pelicans. We look for quiet islands where our eggs and chicks will be safe from predators.

But even on islands, the eggs and chicks are not safe from gulls and crows. Parent pelicans take turns sitting on the eggs and covering the young chicks. This also protects them from the sun during the day and from cool ocean breezes at night.

A: The Northwest Chair Co. made furniture in South Tacoma from about 1900 to the 1950s. In the mid-1920s, they opened distribution warehouses in Los Angeles and Berkeley, Calif. An advertisement claimed the company made “bedroom, children’s, dining room, kitchen, library and store chairs made of ash, birch, mahogany, oak and walnut.” In addition to furniture, the company made airplane parts for Boeing in 1944. A: The Johnson brothers had a wholesale and retail hardware business in Cincinnati beginning in 1881. According to an 1886 listing, the company carried general hardware and “pocket and table cutlery.” The name of the business became Johnson Bros. Hardware Co. in 1891. By then it was selling tools as well as hardware and cutlery. It still was in business in 1913, when it was listed in a directory of hardware dealers. Collectors of old razors want razors in good, unrestored condition. If you are thinking of selling the razor, don’t polish it. The original box adds value. Watch out for fake antiques, especially copies of well-known pieces. In about 1820, some potters in the Staffordshire district of England made portrait figures of famous politicians, actors and athletes to sell in local shops. Remember, this was a time when there were no color images of people except paintings and few black-and-white photos. Often the potters confused the personalities.

A famous error was the figure of Benjamin Franklin made in about 1820.

Some had the name “General Washington” painted on the front of the base. In the 1950s, when Staffordshire figures were again very popular, many copies of both the correct and incorrect Franklin were made. Other old fakes still are around. Some are antique jokes, like “The Vicar and Moses,” which shows a judge sleeping in court. “The Tithing” is another faked figure, a group with a tax collector taking a percentage of the crop - and a new baby - as a tax from a farmer and his wife (sometimes the farmer was less cynical and brought a pig). Other named copies show well-known men of the day, including Shakespeare, the comic Joseph Grimaldi, a bust of Washington or even a pair of cricket bowlers.

Be careful. It is harder to recognize the 1990s Chinese copies than it was the 1950s copies.

A: T. & R. Boote was founded by Thomas and Richard Boote in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, in 1842. The company made pavement tiles, Parian ware and earthenware. It began making white graniteware for export to the United States in 1888. Production was limited to tiles after 1906. T. & R. Boote used a boat as part of its mark from 1890 to 1906. Tusculana is the name of a pattern that was made from 1903 to 1906.

‘May in the Summer’: Marriage, symbolism and a missed opportunity

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post On paper, there’s a lot to like about “May in the Summer.” It was written and directed by a woman, which is an anomaly, but it’s also about the complicated inner-workings of distinct female characters and takes place in Amman, Jordan. It even passes the Bechdel Test, which is a ridiculously easy metric that most movies nevertheless fail: It has at least two female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man.

Given how underrepresented women are in Hollywood, it’s understandable to want to root for “May in the Summer.” But a movie has to be more than a hopeful symbol of progress, and this one only sporadically lives up to the promises of a good cast and a filmmaker, Cherien Dabis, who won over critics and festival crowds five years ago with the drama “Amreeka.”

The story revolves around May (Dabis, in her acting debut). An Amman native with a Jordanian-Christian mother and an American father, she now lives in New York, working as a writer. When she returns to her home town for her wedding, to a Palestinian also from Jordan, she spends time with her opinionated sisters and divorced parents.

Her mother, who blatantly disapproves of the marriage, doesn’t plan to attend the ceremony. But, does May want to get married? That remains unclear, even to her.

This has the makings of a good story, and it’s an appropriate time (as always) to look at the cultural and religious discrimination in the Middle East. But Dabis made a misstep in casting herself in the lead role, despite her movie-star looks. Although she warms up to the part by the movie’s end, her sometimes wooden delivery can be distracting, and her demeanor tends to be inscrutable. The

best actors manage to convey a lot with just a look, but Dabis isn’t there yet. Meanwhile, her attempt to conjure the giddy absurdity of drunkenness – a notoriously tall order for an actor – falls flat.

But she has her moments.

In one of the most memorable scenes, May and her sister, Dalia (Alia Shawkat), float in the Dead Sea while having a heart-to-heart. It’s beautifully filmed, and the conversation feels real. Across the sea, May says, people are at war, while here, her big life decisions revolve around whether to get a band or a DJ for her wedding reception.

Along with Shawkat, the rest of the casting is exceptional. Bill Pullman plays the girls’ absentee father, turning a deadbeat dad into a likable guy, and their mother, Nadine, is played by Hiam Abbass. She may be the most interesting character in the movie. A devout Christian who has been alone since her husband left her for a younger

woman, she doesn’t quite know what her purpose is. So she spends her days cooking for her daughters and working on untying a giant knot, which May believes is some kind of jinx on her upcoming nuptials.

The movie slips in some thought-provoking themes, including a certain solipsism as every character harbors secrets from the others. But neither the idea that only we know ourselves, nor the timely plot thread about Nadine’s religious intolerance, feels thoroughly explored. It’s diverting to watch and has moments of brilliance, but even with all its refreshing female characters, “May in the Summer” doesn’t leave a lasting impression.

• “May in the Summer” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains strong language.

It is in English and Arabic with subtitles. The film runs 99 minutes.

Although I understand and respect the benefits of being bilingual, this caused a lot of communication gaps and frustration between us and the grandkids during their early years.

The problem is, when we are together, my daughter-in-law speaks to her children exclusively in her native language. Cause of ‘anovulation’ should be determined Dear Doctor K: I’ve always had infrequent periods, but I never thought much of it. My doctor recently used the word “anovulatory” to explain why I’ve had trouble getting pregnant. What does this mean? Could the two be connected?

Dear Reader: ”Anovulation” means you are not ovulating -releasing eggs. A woman’s ovary should release approximately one egg each month. Once released, the egg travels into the fallopian tube.

There, it can be fertilized by the entry of a sperm. The fertilized egg then enters the uterus.

When a woman does not ovulate, no egg is available to be fertilized by sperm. As a result, a woman cannot become pregnant.

Women who are anovulatory have irregular, few or no periods.

What causes anovulation?

Something wrong with the signals that cause ovulation. What are those signals? They start in a woman’s brain. The brain has its own “calendar.” It knows how old you are, and it knows what time of month it is. It knows the time of your life for you to start ovulating and the time to stop -- and it knows the time of the month for you to ovulate.

The brain controls ovulation and menstrual periods through

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff a group of hormones, natural substances made in the brain that travel between different parts of the brain and also travel through the blood to the ovaries and uterus.

Anovulation can occur for many reasons. For example, women who exercise intensely, for long periods of time, may not ovulate. Women who are anorexic or have a very low body mass index may also have irregular or absent periods. In both cases, it appears that the brain hormones that normally stimulate ovulation are “dialed down,” for reasons we don’t understand.

Another common cause of irregular periods is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS don’t ovulate normally.

That’s because the body doesn’t respond normally to the hormone insulin.

Anovulation can also be a sign of abnormal hormone levels.

Women who do not produce enough thyroid hormone may not ovulate normally. The same is true of women with high blood levels of prolactin. Prolactin is a hormone

normally produced in the brain that stimulates the breast to produce milk during breastfeeding.

Once your doctor identifies the reason why you are not ovulating, the problem often can be corrected. For example, if you have PCOS, your doctor may prescribe medications that improve insulin sensitivity. This, in turn, may improve your chances of ovulating and becoming pregnant.

Even if your doctor cannot correct an underlying cause, you may still be able to become pregnant. A medication like clomiphene (Clomid), for example, can stimulate your ovaries to produce eggs.

Even if you do not want to become pregnant, it is important to recognize anovulation and to speak with your doctor about it.

That’s because anovulation can also affect other areas of a woman’s health. Infrequent periods, for example, increase the risk of the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis.

When talking to your doctor, ask what you can do to build and preserve bone strength.

However, according to The Cancer Society, if no one smoked, 83 percent of lung cancer would eventually be eliminated.
