‘We did everything we could’ Cougars move on after Cubs leave for South Bend

Depending on the departure time from Wrigley Field, gridlock’s a reality whether you head west to Geneva or east to South Bend, Indiana.

For the Cubs, then, the perks of the destination ultimately determined Thursday’s decision to sign a player-development contract with South Bend through the 2018 season, leaving the Cougars after a two-year relationship.

While both Kane County and South Bend offered facility upgrades for the 2015 season, the Cubs viewed something potentially sterling with the Silver Hawks.

“We felt that after sitting down with them and seeing what they were going to do, it provided really the optimal place, certainly, for the players at the level that they’re at,” McLeod said.

Sixteen days after unveiling a capital improvement plan with several amenities triggered to the Cubs’ specifications and five days after rolling to the Midwest League title, the Cougars absorbed an indisputable loss in Chicago-area cachet.

Officials from the Arizona Diamondbacks, a South Bend affiliate from 1997 to 2014, are set to visit Fifth Third Bank Ballpark today, Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said. Early next week, Oakland Athletics brass will return to their familiar stomping grounds for a Cougars summit. The A’s and Cougars

“This is not a complicated part now. There’s only four people left on the dance floor,” Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich said. “It’s not a matrix to figure out what’s going to happen next. So we’re going to try to move as fast as we can.”

Froehlich, the team’s top executive since June, and Haug aspire to a timetable that would take days, not weeks.

A decorated businessman who was traveling home from New York when Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts contacted him with the news Wednesday night, Froehlich admitted little concern that the Cubs might seriously test the waters after they didn’t initially renew their PDC. He simply thought the issue would be whether the next contract went for two seasons or four.

When the negotiation period opened earlier this week, the Cougars did not speak with officials from Arizona, Oakland or the San Diego Padres, who renewed with Fort Wayne on Wednesday morning. Within a few days, “Go, Cubs, go” became “No, Cubs, no.”

“It’s a very strange business dynamic for someone that is going through it for the first time,” Froehlich said.

“So it’s kind of archaic, has a

lot of quirks to it, and participating with it, when it starts, you’re sort of powerless in terms of what you can do. You just sort of sit back and hope someone selects you.

“We felt that we did the best job that we could do, and we can’t change what had happened in the past, but I will say I’ve never been more overwhelmed with a process in terms of how it consumes

Decision on ComEd’s power line plan expected in October

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Those wanting to know whether ComEd will get the OK to run about 60 miles of high-voltage power lines from Byron to Wayne should get an answer next month.

The Illinois Commerce Commission is considering the proposal, and this month a panel of administrative law judges issued a non-binding ruling on the matter.

Both the utility company and an opponent to the Grand Prairie Gateway project are encouraged by the proposed order.

ComEd spokesperson David O’Dowd in an email noted

that 80 percent of the proposed transmission line route – from Byron to just west of Rippburger Road in Plato Center – received favorable feedback.

“The order recognizes the value of the project, which will save customers $250 million, reduce greenhouse gases and create 500 jobs,” O’Dowd said.

“We will work with the ICC to address concerns related to the balance of the line. The commission is due to make its final decision on the project

by Oct. 27.”

The rest of the line is planned for Plato Center – which is west of Elgin and north of Campton Hills – to Wayne.

County copier proposed purchase gives way to paperless discussion

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The proposed purchase of two copiers prompted a discussion Thursday about whether Kane County could become paperless.

The Information Technologies Department is seeking to replace two aging copiers – one black and white, one color – with two color copiers from Illinois Paper and Copier Company of Bolingbrook for $75,000 with a 60-month maintenance contract.

Staff told the Administration Committee that the county would be getting two copiers for the price of what was budgeted for one.

The other four bids ranged from about $97,400 to about $110,700, according to agenda documents.

Committee member Deborah Allan, D-Elgin, asked staff whether they were confident in their selected vendor seeing as how the other

bids were significantly higher.

Staff indicated they were.

Agenda documents also indicated the existing copiers are more than five years old, and the cost per copy rate is increasing each year, as is the demand for color copies.

With a shift toward using tablets, committee member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, asked how much the county uses and whether there is an initiative to reduce use.

County Board members generally use tablets during board and committee meetings.

Committee Chairman Ron Ford, D-Aurora, referenced how thick some agenda packets – particularly for County Board meetings – would be before members started using tablets.

He said he doesn’t envision a completely paperless county, but he would like to see a plan to reduce paper usage over time.

Of that section, the proposed order states, “the commission finds that ComEd has failed to identify an alternate right of way … and it has failed to show good cause why it should be excused from providing and identifying an alternative right of way for that part of the project.”

“We were assuming we were heading down a path to renewal, but as I’ve said, they’re a great organization, and they’re really focused on player development and they’re going to do whatever they think is the best for player development,” Froehlich said. “And I firmly believe that when they decided to test the waters, they were testing it from a player development perspective and they found a facility that they think can help develop their players better than Kane County, and I think that was the sole driving influence.”

Of course, behind-thescenes amenities are a tougher sell to fans eager to see such top Cubs prospects as outfielder Albert Almora and catcher Kyle Schwarber, former firstround draft picks who called Kane County home during the most recent PDC. “Geographically, between Cubdom and the White Sox, I think we both feel very good about the broad scope in terms of the fan base,” McLeod said.

“Saying that, [we’re] very sensitive to our fans in the western suburbs who went out to

Kane County in the past couple years and got more involved in that.”

Now that buzz is bound for South Bend, where Hart said fans already attend games in Cubs’ apparel, a natural given the regional proximity.

Hart described an immediate surge in optimism when South Bend executives learned Fort Wayne renewed its PDC with San Diego. The Cubs balked on Fort Wayne because of the distance from Chicago.

“At that point, we liked our chances, and there might be a great opportunity,” Hart said.

“I mean, it’s gone so fast, it really hasn’t had time even to set in, to be honest with you.”

South Bend set a new franchise attendance record in 2014, attracting 258,836 fans in 69 openings, an average crowd of 3,751. Those marks still ranked considerably behind the Cougars, who were second in the league with 415,571 fans and a 6,023 average.

Dayton, long aligned with the nearby Cincinnati Reds, led the MWL with 573,709 fans and an average gate of 8,437.

In July 2013, the Cougars became the first Class-A franchise to welcome its 10 millionth fan. Kane County has drawn at least 400,000 fans in 20 of the past 21 seasons, with 2012 (391,102) the lone exception. The club’s parent teams during that stretch included the Florida (now Miami) Marlins, Oakland A’s, Kansas City Royals and Cubs, a wide array that didn’t necessarily deter

crowds.

“Sometimes they’re almost oblivious as to who we’re affiliated with,” Haug said.

“They’re more interested in coming out here and being entertained, having a good time, and that’s what Cougars baseball is all about.”

Still, there’s no arguing the lasting impact a longer relationship with the Cubs might have had on the Cougars, whose employees convened for a staff meeting shortly after the news from South Bend spread.

“Oh, I think that everybody’s fine,” Haug said. “We can hold our heads high. We can be proud of all the good things that we did for the Cubs organization over the last two years. We did everything we could. I think we had a great relationship with them. Our front office here is such a great group of people. We’ve got a lot to build on for next year.”

That process starts after one new order of business: finding a new suitor out west.

South Bend is set to open a new, 11,000-square-foot batting and pitching facility next season as part of an ongoing wave of renovations. Beginning Monday, the Silver Hawks will begin transitioning from an artificial playing surface at Four Winds Field to natural grass.

Library board approves bid for new roof

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Public Library Board voted to accept the lowest of four bids for replacing and repairing its roof at a special meeting Thursday.

The vote was 5-1 with one absent to accept the bid from Pine for just under $241,000.

Board member Travis Ketterman voted “no” and board member Susan Shivers was absent.

An issue for board members was how low Pine’s bid was compared to the other bidders.

They postponed final action on the bid until they had information from Pine’s last five roof projects.

Melissa Barrows-Lieb, president of the library district’s roofing consultant, Mac Brady Associates Inc. of LaGrange, presented information that Pine works long hours with a large crew and has good communication skills.

Also at that meeting, Shivers had asked that Library Director Christine Lazaris find warranties for the work already done on the 17-yearold library roof.

Lazaris said after reviewing the warranties, the library district’s attorney determined they had no basis for pursuing them.

Barrows-Lieb also had cautioned the library board that any warranty still in effect would be pro-rated, reducing any financial benefit.

The board also chose the shingle color Hickory by Timberline, which is brown with flecks of rust.

Lazaris said the board still needs to approve a contract with Pine, which is expected to be done by the next regular meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the library, 127 James St. Barrows-Lieb is expected to work with Pine to come up with a construction timeline for the roof work so it can be completed this calendar year, officials said.

LOCAL BRIEF Gel Spice Company issuing recall for pepper The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that the Gel Spice Company Inc., of Bayonne, New Jersey, is issuing a voluntary recall notice for Fresh Finds-Ground Black Pepper, 3.53 ounce, plastic jars, because it has the possibility to be contaminated with salmonella, states a news release.

The product was distributed via Big Lots Stores Inc. nationwide, including Illinois, but there were no reported illnesses related to the product as of Thursday afternoon, states the release.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious – and sometimes fatal infections – in young children, frail or elderly

people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis. The recall was issued as the result of sampling by the FDA, which revealed the finished products contained the bacteria. Residents who have the product in their homes should dispose of it. GENEVA – The Geneva History Museum was chosen for a 2014 Illinois Association of Museums Award of Excellence in the area of Best Practices – Exhibitions for “Start With A Sketch,” highlighting cartoonists, illustrators and voice characters in the community.

This exhibition was created by the Geneva History Museum and displayed in the feature gallery starting in February. It will be on display through November.

According to award committee chairwoman Kim Sheahan in a news release, “The committee and peer reviewers were impressed with the variety of collaborations and educational opportunities involved in ‘Start With A Sketch’ that allowed you to take a two-dimensional subject and bring it to life.”

Liquor commission’s role might expand

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Liquor Control Commission members this week gave their unanimous support for taking on the licensing of tobacco and massage parlors in the city.

The commission on Monday voted, 4-0, at its regular meeting in favor of the expanded duties, which they discussed with St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan

and Deputy Police Chief Steve Huffman.

City staff wants to revise the St. Charles Municipal Code so that the tobacco and massage parlor licensees themselves would be held responsible for violations, similar to the current process with the commission for liquor licensees that incur violations.

St. Charles city staff will continue to refine existing language in the Municipal Code and make additions as

well where it pertains to tobacco and massage parlors, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said. Staff will then return at a future meeting with the proposed updates.

“I’m definitely in favor of stiffening the penalties for tobacco licensees violating the ordinance for selling to a minor,” Rogina said on Thursday.

When an employee sells tobacco to a minor, currently only the employee but not the licensee is penalized, Ro-

gina said.

Keegan also discussed various options the city could take in regards to regulating e-cigarettes, such as whether their use should be banned in public places, he said.

The commission hopes regulation will give local massage parlors credibility following three prostitution arrests earlier this year at St. Charles businesses.

“There are plenty of good quality massage therapists

in the area, and I don’t like to see [them] be besmirched or sullied because of a few incidents,” Rogina said.

Businesses already in compliance won’t be opposed to having a licensing process, said Maureen Lewis, a commission member and Ward 5 alderman.

“I think we do have good, conscientious businesses in town that follow the law,” Lewis said on Thursday.

“Our purpose here is to work with everybody.”

Police provide tips on identify theft protection KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department this week shared tips on how residents can prevent becoming victims of identity theft.

After an identity theft, offenders might create fictitious credit cards and use them at brick-and-mortar stores, as well as online, according to a St. Charles police news release.

Police suggest shredding any documents that might contain personal information, including charge receipts, credit

applications, insurance forms, medical statements, checks and bank statements, expired credit and debit cards and direct mail credit offers.

Residents should also check their credit report annually, at a minimum, by visiting www. annualcreditreport.com.

This is the only place to obtain a federally-backed free report, the release states.

Another option to obtain report information is to contact one of three credit bureaus each fiscal quarter. They are Equifax at 800-525-6285 or www. equifax.com; Experian at 888-

397-3742 or www.experian.com; and TransUnion at 800-680-7289 or www.transunion.com.

Requesting a free report one quarter of the year and then contacting one credit bureau in each of the other quarters will allow residents to keep watch over their credit all year long, according to the release.

Identity thieves also send emails made to look like legitimate requests from financial institutions asking to verify usernames, passwords and other information.

Police advise never responding to those emails because no

legitimate company conducts business in that manner, states the release.

Residents that ever find their wallet or purse stolen should notify police to make a report and notify credit card companies, banks and the Social Security office as soon as possible.

Donald E. “Don” Templeman Sr., age 83, of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles surrounded by his family.

He was born November 10, 1930 in Orange, New Jersey, the son of Richard and Dorothy Templeman.

Don proudly served our country in the Army during the Korean War. He was the driving force behind U.S. Colors & Coatings Company and Kolorcure Corporation, both companies based in Batavia. He enjoyed work, sports and was especially fond of golf. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Donald Jr. of Reno, Nevada, Brian (Laura) of Geneva, Laurie Christiansen of St. Charles, and Carin (Angelo) D’Amore of St. Charles; 13 grandchildren, Adam, Robin (Bob) Olsen, Aaron, Sarah Templeman, Jennifer, Michelle (Adam) Delmuro, Daniel, and Lindsay Templeman, Stacey (Seth) Schnebel, Steven and Kevin (Mary) Christiansen, Jessica and Eric D’Amore; 5 great-grandchildren, Abigail and Chloe Olsen, Jackson and Gillian Schnebel, Emily Grace Templeman, and Jayden Rivera; and many dear nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

She taught for the St. Charles School District for 20 years with all different grade levels. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sycamore, and she was a lifetime member of the National Education Association.

Barbara was very active with St. Mary School in Sycamore.

She especially loved baking for the students. She volunteered at Hospice, DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center, and the Pay It Forward House in Sycamore.

She was a very generous member of the community with her time, talents and treasures.

Barbara is survived by 5 nieces, 2 nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Anthony J. (Mary) Yusunas; and five sisters, Helen Yusunas, Elizabeth Yusunas, Delores (Yusunas) Edwards, Christine Jensen and Pauline Forrest.

The Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sycamore, with Father Paul Lipinski officiating. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in DeKalb.

Immigration reform for Obama stumbles THE WASHINGTON POST President Barack Obama’s zigs and zags in pursuit of immigration reform are a long-unfolding narrative now assuming epic dimensions. In the latest installment, Obama has postponed the unilateral reforms he promised to have unveiled by now. He did so not for any high-minded purpose but rather to avoid dealing mortal blows to the reelection of a handful of Democratic senators who begged the president to hold off.

Thus has subverting immigration reform become a bipartisan project advanced by Republicans, who despise the idea of putting millions of Hispanics on a path to citizenship, and by Democrats, who like it but fear the political fallout.

Obama insists congressional inaction justifies his determination to take matters into his own hands and refashion enforcement of the nation’s laws to his liking.

In his view, executive action is warranted by legislative paralysis; he alone will determine (although not quite yet) the breadth and depth of changes that could affect the status of millions of undocumented immigrants.

The president’s goals are right; his method, depending on how far he goes, seems ill-advised. Until he outlines his legal justification, if he eventually proceeds unilaterally as promised, no firm judgment can be offered. But his options seem limited if he intends to carry out the sort of sweeping changes that advocates of reform are counting on.

Just a year ago, Obama told an interviewer that it “would be very difficult to defend legally” any move to shield large numbers of additional illegal immigrants from deportation as he did in 2012 for so-called Dreamers – undocumented migrants brought to this country as children.

Whether Obama may be able to make stick such a blanket change in enforcement is one question; he probably can. A separate question is whether it’s wise.

His decision to postpone an action he promised for the end of the summer, for fear of the electoral fallout, underscores the enormity of the likely political backlash.

We share the president’s conviction that the immigration system is a mess; that Congress – specifically, House Republicans – has abdicated its responsibility and defied popular will by refusing to fix it; and that the status quo of 11 million undocumented immigrants is economically self-defeating.

But rewriting the law unilaterally in defiance of Congress and on dubious legal grounds, even after the midterm elections, will not ultimately serve the cause of durable reform. It is more likely to ignite a political firestorm that will give the upper hand to immigration restrictionists, who would use it for years to justify resistance to reform. For the president, that would be a pyrrhic victory indeed.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR SURVEY SHOWS SHORTAGES To the Editor: Frank Libby, president of the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters, needs to get his facts straight before accusing the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) of hearsay regarding a shortage of skilled workers in the residential construction industry (Kane County Chronicle; Sept. 16, 2014).

Although Libby says there are plenty of carpenters looking for work in Chicago, the NAHB survey of its national membership showed that shortages of labor and subcontractors have indeed become more widespread on a nationwide basis. If Libby had bothered to read the report, he would have seen that builders in some areas of the U.S. reported no shortage of workers, but overall the survey revealed that

shortages are more widespread and becoming increasingly problematic.

The residential construction sector shed 1.4 million jobs after the housing bust, and many of those workers left the industry or moved to other parts of the country to find jobs in different fields.

It will take time to bring workers back into the home building field.

Moreover, Libby’s claim that builders are circumventing the hiring of skilled professionals for less-trained workers in order to save money is ludicrous. In markets

where shortages exist, builders are forced to pay higher wages in competition for fewer workers, and they are oftentimes unable to finish their projects on schedule, costing them time and money.

While housing is local, NAHB is ready and willing to work with all interested parties to ensure a skilled workforce can meet the needs of home builders and home buyers in every market across the nation.

This year appears to be more of the same, if the first week of conference play last week is any indication. Here were the lopsided results: Batavia 49, Larkin 6 Geneva 46, Streamwood 12 St. Charles East 40, Elgin 0 St. Charles North 27, West Chicago 6

eneva football coach Rob Wicinski and Batavia counterpart Dennis Piron occasionally alternate colorful euphemisms about one another’s football teams.

“Those guys in” red or blue, pending the perspective, have combined to win all four Upstate Eight Conference River Division titles, with St. Charles East and St. Charles North providing competition, too.

But save for Elgin’s second-place finish in 2010, the league’s U-46 contingent routinely has struggled – badly – in four-plus seasons, a reality highlighted again tonight as Geneva travels to North in a meeting of unbeatens while Batavia visits East.

The all- Tri-Cities matchups figure to mold the league race more than any game involving Elgin, Larkin, Streamwood or new River entrant West Chicago.

Since Batavia and Geneva joined the UEC River in 2010, the Bulldogs – 23-2 in conference play in that span and on a 20-game winning streak – have paced the field. Geneva is next, owning a 20-5 league record despite three straight losses to Batavia. East (15-10) and North (13-12) are the only other schools above .500.

In descending order from break-even point, there’s Larkin (7-18), Streamwood (6-19) and Elgin (4-21). River newbie West Chicago can reach .500 in its conference infancy, albeit at 1-1, with a win against the visiting Maroons tonight. Elgin is seeking its first River victory since defeating East, 27-24, in Week 8 of 2010.

He stepped down after the 2012 season, however, another move Piron believes reflects the conference landscape to this point.

Technically, Wicinski is the lone coach still in place from the River’s inaugural 2010 season, although Piron, a devoted Batavia alumnus, was a longtime assistant before succeeding friend Mike Gaspari the next fall.

“If the coach can be somewhere two, three, four, five, six years, you’re going to get some better stuff, right? Because you’re going to have the same stuff at every level, more coaches working together, same kids. They get used to it,” Piron said. “I think where you get into trouble at a lot of those U-46 schools is a coaching carousel,

where guys don’t get a chance to establish any of that.”

Agreeing in kind before a recent practice, Wicinski still showed reluctance to extend himself other than walking a few steps to use a convenient prop.

“Just Tri-Cities, period [has been the main River focus]. The U-46, since I’ve been in the conference, really hasn’t,” Wicinski said. “Maybe that Bierman team that got second in the day.

But U-46, I’m probably jinxing myself but [knocks on wood of nearby bench], I didn’t know anything from anything, but they seem to struggle a little bit.

So the emphasis turns out to be those Tri-Cities teams. Playing the Easts and the Norths and that team that’s got red on.”

The coach of said red team lauds some of his newest conference brethren. Assessing

this week’s matchup against the Saints, Piron praised first-year East coach Bryce Farquhar, who formerly impressed the Batavia staff as East’s sophomore coach.

“His Xs and Os were as good as anybody’s,” Piron said.

North’s Rob Pomazak has his team off to a 3-0 start after missing the playoffs despite a 5-4 record in his debut last fall.

Then there’s West Chicago’s Ted Monken, a longtime coach in the region with a track record for creating winning cultures at East and Metea Valley over the past decade.

According to his remarks after last week’s home loss to North – one of four, lopsided conference-opening victories for Tri-Cities teams – Monken remains bent on another turnaround.

“No excuses,” he said.

In addressing the thought of a more ideal conference balance, Wicinski cautions, “Be careful what you wish for.”

At the moment, that plan would seem to especially suit East, which knows an extreme litmus test awaits tonight. The defending Class 6A champs visit for homecoming one week after Farquhar earned his first career varsity victory against a reeling foe.

As Farquhar notes, however, all wins are created equal as long as a team reaches six, guaranteeing a playoff spot. For Tri-Cities teams, at least four of those can be readily available in conference play based on recent numbers.

WEEK 4 CHECK-DOWNS ROAD TRIPPING If Batavia’s Wild Dogs formation succeeds the way coach Dennis Piron believes it will, he won’t be shy to credit the man who tacked on the frequent flier miles to make it so.

Longtime Bulldogs volunteer assistant Steve Bailey traveled to a football coaches clinic in Florida during his vacation this year, and was especially attentive to how that state’s Apopka High operated on offense. Made sense, considering the Blue Darters scored a Florida prep record 751 points last season behind an innovative, wing-based scheme.

Piron calls Wild Dogs an offshoot of Apopka’s offense, and “kind of like Wildcat.” The set had brief incarnations in past seasons, but has since been revamped.

“Just try to find the football,” Piron said. “And it’s not option.

It ain’t option. It’s something different. You’ll see.”

SLEEPER GAME OF THE WEEK Kaneland at Yorkville, 7:15 p.m. today For most of the past few falls, the Knights haven’t had the opportunity to rebound from a loss until the next season opener.

After Rich Central stunned Kaneland, 14-13, last week, the Knights leave Peterson Field for the first time this season, opening Northern Illinois Big 12 East play against a Foxes club that has started 3-0 for the second straight season. Yorkville has outscored Plano, Sandwich and Rochelle by a combined count of 119-37.

FOR A CAUSE Just when you thought the ALS ice bucket challenge had faded from view, talk of the fundraising phenomenon was rekindled this week.

Before poring over game tape of one another, players and staff from East and Batavia watched film of the Saints taking the challenge and, in turn, seeing if the Bulldogs were up to the task.

They were, as a group of Batavia coaches replied with their own footage.

“It was just one of those fun things to try to raise money for a cause,” East coach Bryce Farquhar said. “We’re pleased to see that they responded.”

“Big game,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “Both teams 3-0. There’s going to be some hype. Exciting. We’re excited to get over there and get into it.”

The marquee matchup Sparked by a defense that blends size with athleticism – embodied by 6-foot4, 225-pound senior end Jordan Bergren – North has allowed just one offensive touchdown through three games and 17 points overall.

Something will have to to give as Geneva clicks behind Northern Illinois-bound senior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and shifty receiver Pace Temple, a fellow senior, scoring 41, 22 and 46 points in its victories.

The Vikings’ attack proved similarly fruitful in 2013 but hardly overpowered the North Stars in a 35-28 home win.

“They do things that are going to have issues, give us issues. They move around quite a bit. The linebackers are real solid,” Wicinski said. “Up front, they slant, they pinch. The movement stuff, they do enough to cause us some issues, so we’re going to really need to be able to pitch and catch on the perimeter.

We didn’t catch the ball real well at Streamwood [in last week’s 46-12 win]. I’ll blame it on the elements. We’ll see what happens.”

The X-factor Out since leaving early during Geneva’s season-opening win at West Aurora, senior running back Liam Burns (hamstring) is set to return as the Vikings bid to bolster their running attack and diversify their offense.

Having Burns back delights Wicinski, long a proponent of a bruising ground game.

“He’s talking like he’s going,” Wicinski said. “I don’t know if he got a little stressed out that we found, maybe, a tailback. Whatever gets him back on the field.”

Best-case scenario for the Vikings A much-improved Vikings ‘D’ flexes its own athleticism while accumulating early stops.

From the moment they first saw North film, Vikings coaches and players noted the similarity between the North Stars’ spread offense and the spread Richards uses. Geneva neutralized the defending 6A runner-up, 22-19, in Week 2, getting plenty of push up front with its defensive line.

“Pressure,” Geneva senior defensive end Jack McCloughan said. “Just getting off the ball as fast as we can, trying to play smart, keeping our shoulders square. Then just

attacking the quarterback, really.”

Best-case scenario for the North Stars North’s offense taps into its potential, capitalizing in key situations and taking care of the ball.

While quarterback Kyle Novotney, receiver Brendan Joyce and a deep corps of running backs, including Jake Spaniol and dangerous-when-healthy junior Dom Sidari has shined in spots thus far, the offense has left each game hungering for a wider point differential on the scoreboard.

“You’ve got to play a much better football game to play against Geneva,” North coach Rob Pomazak said. “Their offense is pretty dynamic. Their defense is big, physical and fast. We’ve got to play three phases locked tight and we’ve got to be ready to go.”

Sidari (back) missed North’s Week 3 victory at West Chicago, and Pomazak said last week the team was optimistic about his return.

GENEVA – The top two doubles teams for the Batavia and Geneva girls tennis teams pushed themselves to their limits in Thursday’s meet between the two Upstate Eight Conference River rivals.

Both squads’ first and second doubles teams needed three sets to determine the winners. Both matches took so long, that outcome of the contest, which went to Geneva, 5-2, was already determine before they ended.

Geneva’s second doubles team of Madeline Krafcisin

and Madelynn Corda downed Batavia’s duo of Maddie Rea and Holley Smorczewski, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in a match that lasted two hours and 15 minutes.

The first doubles contest between the Bulldogs’ Julianne Robinson and Sydnee Unterberg and the Vikings’ Emma Hazel and Shannon Foster was even longer and more intense.

Geneva (8-5, 2-0 UEC River) took the first set, 7-6, but needed a 7-1 tiebreaker to win it.

The Bulldogs (6-3, 1-1) took the second set, 6-3. They edged the Vikings 7-6 in the third set but needed an 8-6 tiebreaker to win.

Study points to marathon’s economic benefits

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com The Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon now has more than anecdotal evidence to support the economic impact the event has on the area.

A study overseen by Kent State University economics professor Shawn Rohlin concluded that the St. Charlesbased marathon carried an economic impact of about $1.9 million in 2013. This year’s marathon – the fifth year of the event – is Sunday.

Craig Bixler, co-race director, said he and marathon partner Dave Sheble instructed Rohlin and his team to concentrate on the impact for the Fox Valley area rather than categories such as airlines or car rental agencies that would not be as locally relevant.

But businesses such as local hotels, restaurants and running gear stores were right in the study’s wheelhouse.

“It was really an eye-opener to see how they pulled numbers into that, that the real economic impact was much more comprehensive than we realized,” Bixler said. “ …

That’s not our area of expertise, but it was great to know the impact is maybe a little more than you think it was.”

The data used in compiling the study came from surveys distributed to participants in the 2013 marathon, asking about their spending habits during marathon weekend.

Among the numerous figures and tables included in the eight-page report, Rohlin accentuated the roughly $400,000 in direct spending from nonlocal participants and guests, money that clearly would not be spent if not for the marathon attracting people to the area.

But Rohlin said the money spent by local runners also is important considering many of them indicated in their surveys that they likely would run a marathon even if one were not offered in the St. Charles area, meaning they would be taking their dollars elsewhere.

infusion of dollars into the area that then can be re-spent, and said extra staffing needs the weekend of the marathon also pay off for local employees.

“Hotels and restaurants have a very large, what I call, employment impact because restaurants can relatively easily increase the number of waiters and waitresses for that weekend, so there are a lot of extra labor hours that now are happening,” Rohlin said.

While the route for the full marathon – a 20-mile run and half marathon also are part of Sunday’s slate, plus a kids marathon Saturday – extends from St. Charles to Aurora, businesses near the “Race Village” in downtown St. Charles naturally see the most addi-

tional foot traffic.

Kimberly Elam, owner of Kimmer’s Ice Cream, 1 Illinois St., said the kids race Saturday and the marathon Sunday allow her to double business during marathon weekend. She said the store even has created a “Marathon Madness” ice cream flavor for the weekend – vanilla with granola, chocolate chips and peanut butter.

“We were thinking we need something energizing but delicious, so what do we do, and that’s kind of what comes to mind,” Elam said.

the traffic disruptions caused by the marathon discourage some customers from shopping Sunday, essentially negating the extra business from runners and their supporters, but Lencioni still voiced support for the event.

He said Blue Goose will stock up on items such as power bars, breakfast sandwiches and various types of water and sports drinks.

“I have to be connecting with people that are within a shoppable range, a five-minute drive, but that being said, anything that highlights the very cool aspects of St. Charles is something that

as long as done right and planned well and with good communication, I always welcome trying new things and showing off all the very cool things St. Charles has to offer,” Lencioni said.

Bixler hopes the study is a morale-builder for the large network of supporters who help power the event.

“I don’t know if there’s anything specific we would do with [the study] but certainly we want the people that help us put it on, be it sponsors or volunteers or the cities themselves, we want them to know they’re part of something very good and that it’s a significant benefit to the community,” Bixler said.

Rohlin echoed the sentiment.

“Of course roads need to be closed for a couple hours so in some sense it can be costly to local residents, but really, I think local residents truly win by having all this economic impact help their local economy, so I think these types of reports tend to demonstrate that,” Rohlin said.

As did several Cubs executives who descended on Fifth Third Bank Ballpark this season, Cougars groundskeeper Dave Wasielewski commuted to Geneva from Chicago.

Wasielewski worked as a Cubs assistant groundskeeper for nine seasons before 2014 and lives six miles from Wrigley Field. Naturally, his workday expanded when he accepted the position with the Cougars.

During early-season games, Wasielewski often would arrive at 8 a.m. for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch, Dave then leave for home 45 Wasielewski minutes to an hour after the game ended. He delayed his arrival by about an hour during the postseason as the Cougars and their opponents often shortened batting and infield practice.

“Just me being in the majors [before], I still have that push of still trying to make it in a major league field, basically,” Wasielewski said.

“That’s where I guess the long hours and stuff comes in.”

Even as the Cubs shifted Class-A affiliates to South Bend on Thursday, Wasielewski will remain the groundskeeper of record, his previous employer notwithstanding.

“He’s just been so dedicated and worked so hard, and the field looks the best it’s ever looked,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said.

Wasielewski worked for the Cubs during postseason appearances in 2007 and 2008, a part-time employee putting in full-time hours for his boyhood team. Still, he found the vibe to be far different with the Cougars, and not just because they advanced further than either of those Cubs teams, winning the Midwest League title in a three-game sweep earlier this month.

It typically took Wasielewski 60 to 90 minutes to get to work each morning, and 40 more to drive home at night. His thoughts occasionally drifted to the parent Cubs during windshield time.

Pondering his former colleagues became unavoidable on the night of Aug. 19. As the Cougars were defeating Burlington, 4-3, the Cubs waited through a lengthy delay after a torrential downpour at Wrigley.

The incident eventually was reduced to one word, “Tarpgate,” as the grounds crew struggled to put the tarp in its proper place over the infield.

It lay in disarray into the early morning hours before the game was awarded to the Cubs. It eventually was resumed after the visiting San

Francisco Giants protested the ruling.

“I couldn’t imagine going through that,” Wasielewski said. “We’ve had some rough days there before, but I couldn’t imagine that.”

He won’t have to this offseason. Although his days will include the trying work of seeding and spot sodding, they’ll also be a tad shorter.

“That’ll be new for me,” Wasielewski said.

“Just prepping for the winter, basically putting it to sleep.”

AURORA – Coming off its first loss of the season, the last thing the St. Charles East boys soccer team wanted to do was drop two in a row.

It didn’t, thanks to some late-game heroics from Collin Sheehan, whose goal in the 71st minute helped the Saints (8-11) eke out a 2-2 draw Thursday in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover at Waubonsie Valley.

East dominated possession throughout the first half and for most of the game but trailed for most of the second half after a handball was called inside its box in the 49th minute.

Waubonsie Valley senior midfielder Henry Zehnal drilled the penalty kick past Saints goalkeeper Steven Owens, who came back to play the second half after being carted off the field with an injury in the first.

Running short on time, the Saints created a number of looks off balanced runs over the top before Sheehan was able to knock in the equalizer after a deflection off a defender.

“I saw Zach [Manibog] bring it in down the sideline,” Sheehan said. “He tried to get a cross and it deflected off a defender. I was in the right place at the right time and was just able to put it home.”

The Saints continued to press forward in the closing minutes and had a few chances, with a free kick in the 74th minute serving as the best look for the game winner.

But Taylor Ortiz’s shot from outside the 18 on the kick sailed high over the net.

The result came in a frustrating game and week for the Saints after losing 1-0 to Batavia on Tuesday.

Liberty, the new third-grade writing mascot at Williamsburg Elementary School, visited during a kick-off assembly in August to share his love of writing with students. At the assembly, Liberty spoke with thirdgrade teacher Dawn Lutz (right) about sharing his “Writer’s Notebook” and a poem he wrote with students.

Throughout the year, Liberty will visit third-grade classrooms, introducing various types of writing, such as letter writing, narrative, informational writing and poetry. He also will provide activities that strengthen students’ writing skills, states a news release.

By Elinor Paumer, a North Aurora resident For many months I have strolled leisurely in this unknown woodland going farther, farther into its denseness until I came to a clearing where two rivers begin.

A harsh sound awakens me from this peaceful mood I turn ... and see the other river I look at it startled.

It is like a strong wild horse with powerful muscles flashing through its satin skin Throwing back its luxurious mane, making smaller animals run swiftly away.

Fearful I turn my back on it and longingly fix my gaze on the slow, quiet drifting of the peaceful river ...

I bend over and into its warm depths I dip my fingertips hoping it will banish their numbness ... the sight of black eyes flashes before me. and I withdraw my hand.

O God ... don’t let me remain on this barren land my body is rigid from standing so steadfast ... my head is throbbing from thinking about unknown destinies.

And I am afraid.

Shall I take her guiding hand and journey restingly, dreamingly on, on forever safe?

From its arrival on the North American continent several years ago through today, the Range Rover Evoque has filled a unique niche. It is a sport utility vehicle built for “ordinary” consumers who can afford a $41,100 off-roader.

Even the most effete suburbanite could take this vehicle off the road, freewheeling it across plains, up and down gulleys and through water no more than 19 inches deep.

Those 19 inches are what Range Rover engineers say the Evoque can wade through before the electronics governing the powertrain become flooded.

Like its company companions, the Evoque exudes comfort while encountering the wilderness. Like other Range Rovers in the company portfolio, the Evoque has all the mechanicals that the more professional off-roaders want, such as automatic hill descent, directional power to wheels with grip, electronic rear differential, undercarriage protection, all-wheel-drive with an active driveline and traction control, and transmission settings to cover most contingencies. These settings are not only for normal highway driving, but also for engaging snow, mud or sand.

Unlike the other Range Rovers, the Evoque is a compact vehicle built as a coupe. If you can imagine a sedan as a coupe, then try to envision an SUV as one, also. This SUV coupe, though, has four doors for five occupants plus a storage area of 39.2 cubic feet maximum. The coupe motif is reflected in the exterior design. This means the roof slopes downard from windshield to rear power liftgate spoiler while a crease on both sides begins at the front fender and angles upward to the LED taillights.

Also on the exterior, the Evoque has very pronounced fenders, much more emphasized than on other Range Rovers.

Evoque is the least expensive Range Rover model with a price starting at $41,100. The LR4 is priced from $50,625, the Range Rover Sport from $63,525, and the flagship Range Rover from $84,225. Remember that the Evoque is a compact vehicle and not a mid- or full-sized SUV. Even so the hardware and mechanicals are equivalent or the same.

As the company publicists claim, the Evoque is a true Range Rover in compact form. This translates into less interior space, which means the cargo area expands only to 39.2 cubic feet

A 2-liter, 240-horsepower, turbocharged, inline, four-cylinder engine is mated to a shiftable nine-speed automatic in the four-wheel-drive, five-passenger 2014 Evoque model of Land Rover’s Range Rover.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper after the rear split bench seats have been folded flat. When upright, the cubic footage is 20.3. The slanting roof and angled sides compromise storage capacity. During the test week, it meant a 29-inch tall garbage can would not fit upright in the cargo area. To its credit, the cargo area was lighted, carpeted and came with moveable tiedowns on a rail system.

For $41,100, an Evoque buyer gets a sport utility with leather seats (power and heated in front), 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, wide off-roading tires, an 18-inch spare tire, and a nine-speed shiftable (paddles behind leather-clad and power tilt, telescoping steering wheel) transmission mated to a 2-liter, turbocharged, 240-horsepower engine.

Pricier Evoques get the same powerplant but more goodies, such as 19- or 20-inch wheels.

As far as economy, this Evoque powerplant was tested for a week and averaged 23.4 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.

Premium fuel is recommended for the 18.5-gallon tank.

Noteworthy is the interior comfort.

Various people rode in the tested Evoque and all six said it was abnormally comfortable. True, several of the six drove lesser SUVs or small sedans, so the comfort was not compared with more luxury quality SUV offerings from Lexus, Infiniti, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi. Those competitors could be equally comfortable. And the few that this writer has tested, are as comfortable.

Besides the usual safety features of antilock brakes, traction-stability control and airbags (front, sides, overhead, driver’s knee), Evoque safety features include rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic halogen project headlamps, and front and rear park distance control with rear camera, Automatic transmission shifts are on a knob centered on the front console.

It is a simple process to turn the knob from “P” for park to “D” for drive, or to “N” for neutral, “R” for reverse or “S” for sport.

The 380-watt, 11-speaker Meridian sound system operates on the push screen method, but there is a knob for volume control. The push screen

responds immediately and, once mastered via the owner’s manual, is easy to operate.

Four windows are power, with the two in front express up and down.

An Evoque’s price can rise to $56,600, but this is for a model with 20-inch wheels, an 825-watt, 17-speaker sound system and other upgrades in trim, such as Macassar wood finish on dashboard, console and doors instead of more normal burled oak or walnut.

Macassar is a streaky ebony hardwood named after an Indonesian island. where it grows in abundance.

The tested $55,700 Prestige model of the Evoque came with the exotic trim and increased sound system wattage. It is impressive but somehow one thinks “normal” leather trim and a 325-watt sound system should suffice.

Warranty coverage is four years or 50,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance. The first scheduled maintenance is free.

‘The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them’: Pulled together, falling apart

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” debuted at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival as two films.

Billed as a work in progress, the movies took the form of twin chapters of a single narrative. Running a little over three hours, the films – subtitled “Him” and “Her” – told the tale of a couple in crisis, spinning events, in “Rashomon”-like fashion, from the respective vantage points of a lost and lonely New York restaurateur named Conor (James McAvoy) and his estranged, depressive wife, Eleanor (Jessica Chastain).

After distribution rights were picked up by the Weinstein Co., first-time filmmaker Ned Benson recut the he-said, she-said saga into a single, two-hour package synthesizing both narratives. “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them” made its bow at this spring’s Cannes Film Festival, and has now arrived in American theaters. Next month, there are plans for a limited release of “Him” and “Her.” Knowing this back story – or even making the herculean effort to ultimately see all three films – is not, strictly speaking, necessary to appreciate what arguably could be called the final version of the film. Yet the shadow of its past informs the latest incarnation of “Rigby,” a deeply moving, beautifully acted and ultimately mournful meditation on the gulfs that open between people, especially when tragedy falls like a cleaver.

After a brief prologue featuring a silly date early in Conor and Eleanor’s courtship, the real drama opens in earnest, cutting abruptly to a scene of Eleanor attempting to kill herself by jumping off a bridge. That’s her first “disappearance” of the film, which

How we got from that happy scene to the later ones of sorrow and separation is the substance of the rest of the movie. “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” excavates Conor and Eleanor’s history – not, as you might expect, by flashbacks. Rather, it peels the onion by showing the couple trying – painfully, incompletely, perhaps impossibly – to rip off whatever scab is left from the wound that has been inflicted on them by fate, or that they have inflicted on each other, even unknowingly.

The tragedy that befell them soon becomes clear, although its precise circumstances are left to the imagination. As with 2010’s “Rabbit Hole,” an equally powerful story of a husband and wife torn apart by misfortune, the rift that drives Conor and El-

eanor apart isn’t necessarily because one blames the other.

In grief, the film hints, we are alone, perhaps unreachably so.

As Conor later recalls, he and his wife were a million miles away from each other while living in the same apartment.

Benson suggests that this may not be a condition of their particular situation. By making three movies – two showcasing different sides of the story, with a third integrating them, while failing to find a happy ending – the filmmaker underscores what may be a universal truth: We are united only in our isolation. Benson drives home this argument with his supporting cast, with includes fine, subtle performances by Ciaran Hinds as Conor’s father, a man moving on from his third wife, and Jess Weixler as Eleanor’s sister, a single mother.

Other characters reinforce the notion that regret and recrimination aren’t personality

flaws, but features of human nature.

Like the Beatles song that inspired the title character’s name, “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” is about lonely people, trying to connect.

It’s heartbreaking, but not entirely without hope, striking a tone of ambiguity that’s driven home by a sequence showing Eleanor and Conor visiting the same park, separately, but in the same shot.

Are they together, or are they apart? It’s not clear.

Like two movies on the same subject, it’s as if they’re covering the same ground, disconnected, but looking for a place where they can come together to share their stories.

• “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them” received four out of four stars. The film is rated R, and contains mature thematic material, obscenity, fist-fighting and sensuality. It runs 123 minutes.

Essential tremor is aggravating but rarely serious Dear Doctor K: My father was recently diagnosed with essential tremor. Is this the same thing as Parkinson’s disease? If not, what is the difference?

Dear Reader: Essential tremor is a brain condition that causes tremors: uncontrollable shaky movements of the hands, limbs, head or voice. It is usually mild and is very common, often running in families. It usually starts later in life, but when it runs in families it can start in young adulthood.

In contrast, Parkinson’s disease is a serious neurological condition that also causes a tremor. It is much less common than essential tremor. Parkinson’s disease also can cause severe difficulty with walking and most movements of the arms and hands, and can be accompanied by dementia.

Essential tremor is an aggravation that occasionally interferes with a person’s life. When the symptoms of essential tremor first appear, many people understandably worry that they may be getting Parkinson’s disease.

How are the tremors that are seen in essential tremor and in Parkinson’s disease different?

Essential tremor usually involves

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the shaking of one or both hands or the head. The shaking is not always dramatic. Essential tremor is most noticeable when the body is in action, as when you are writing, typing or pouring a beverage. It is less prominent or absent at rest.

In contrast, Parkinson’s tremors are more noticeable at rest. The hands of people with Parkinson’s shake when they are resting. But when they reach out to grab or hold something, such as a cup of coffee, the shaking stops.

Essential tremor is a permanent condition that typically worsens over time. It may gradually spread from one part of your body to other parts. Most people experience only mild or moderate symptoms, but in others, it can cause substantial disability. A patient of mine who was an electrician developed essential tremor in his early 60s and became unable to work.

The great actress Katherine Hepburn developed essential tremor that affected her head,

hands and voice. She hated it, but her skill as an actress was undiminished.

Medicines called beta-blockers (often used to treat high blood pressure) are the most effective treatment for essential tremor. Beta-blockers usually improve the tremor so that it doesn’t interfere with normal activities. In some people, the tremor disappears completely.

Other drugs that may help include the anti-seizure drugs primidone (Myidone, Mysoline) and gabapentin (Neurontin), and the anti-anxiety medicine lorazepam (Ativan).

Stress and caffeine may make the tremor worse. Drinking small amounts of alcohol may temporarily relieve the tremor.

Certain medicines may also worsen your father’s tremor.

They include stimulants, lithium, some antidepressants and thyroid hormone. Have your father talk to his doctor if any of these medications could be worsening his symptoms.

At the bridge table, you must “dream” of the best bids and plays. Sometimes they will seem to be dangerous, but bridge is not a game for cowards. If a bid or play looks best, go for it and ignore the torpedoes!

In today’s deal, East has to try to defeat four hearts. West leads the club queen. South wins with dummy’s king, draws three rounds of trumps (West following throughout), and shifts to the spade king from an initial holding of king-doubleton. What should East do after winning with his spade ace?

South’s two-heart rebid showed at least a six-card suit and a minimum opening, usually 12-14 high-card points.

South can see 11 winners: three spades, six hearts and two clubs. But he might lose four tricks: one spade and three diamonds. However, when East gets in with his spade ace, leading away from the diamond K-J looks dangerous, and many players always return their partner’s suit (although that is much less likely to be right in a suit contract than in no-trump).

Here, though, East should realize that leading back a club won’t defeat the contract. Also, from the bidding, South cannot have the diamond ace to go with his spade king and heart A-K-Q. East must shift to the diamond three, which works like a dream.
