St. Charles East alumnus launches website On the Web

The website, professionintel.com, was launched in August by Thomas Ma, of St. Charles East’s Class of 2012, and some of his fellow classmates at the University of Illinois at Chicago, or UIC. As of this week, there are 15 testimonials on the site for various jobs such as film producer and financial adviser. Next week, the site will have a feature from Northern Illinois alumnus Ryan Diem about his Super Bowl-winning career as an Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman.

Attorney Drendel to receive Chamber of Commerce award KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia Chamber of Commerce has announced that Kevin G. Drendel, attorney at Drendel & Jansons Law Group, is this year’s recipient of the Donna Dallesasse Award in honor of his commitment and dedication to the chamber’s mission, vision and values.

“Kevin is known in our community as the guy who always comes to save the day,” Harriet Parker, chair of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, stated in a news release.

Holly Deitchman, president and CEO of the chamber, has known Drendel for more than seven years.

“I first met Kevin when I was on the board at Batavia Access Television,” Deitchman stated in the release.

“Kevin served as an adviser to our board and provided many services to us pro bono. He was so knowledgeable, approachable, and such a nice guy, and I am proud to announce him as the 2015 Donna Dallesasse award recipient. I was not surprised to find that Kevin also providKevin G. ed pro bono Drendel services to the chamber of commerce, along with serving on the board of directors.”

When told he was this year’s recipient, Drendel was surprised.

“I was honestly surprised when Harriett told me,” Drendel said in the release.

“There are a lot of people who devote a lot of time and

energy to the community.

I am honored to be considered. I have always followed my father’s lead. He was devoted to the community and proud to give his time and energies to make the local community a better place. I had a great example to follow.”

Drendel not only serves the Batavia Chamber of Commerce and BATV, but he also serves other charitable and community organizations, such as the Goodwin Elementary School PTA, the Jewel Middle School PTO, Latinas on the Plaza for Latina business women and Fox Valley Food for Health.

Drendel recently end ed his term on the Batavia Chamber of Commerce Board.

Fox Valley KIDS Marathon set in STC KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Community members are invited to cheer on children athletes Saturday as they participate in the annual Fox Valley KIDS Marathon in downtown St. Charles, according to a news release.

Although the children will complete only 1.2 miles at the event, the release indicated the youths will be able to call themselves marathoners because they logged 25 miles throughout the summer.

The marathon, which is for those ages 4 to 14, starts and finishes at First and Illinois streets. Opening remarks and the national anthem are scheduled for 2:45 p.m., with the race beginning at 3 p.m.

Participants will receive a finisher’s medal, according to the release.

The title sponsor is CASA Kane County, a nonprofit volunteer organization that advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected

children within the juvenile court system. It served nearly 600 children in 2014.

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As Brett Youngsteadt settled into his role as Kane County Animal Control administrator, the desks began bothering him.

The furniture arrangement caused his employees to work with their backs toward him, he said, explaining they faced walls and windows. Eventually, he said, he spun the desks around, changing the way the staff – which he compared to a football team – interacts.

“Without each unique position, you’re not going to win the game,” the 36-year-old said, describing himself as the coach. “I need them as much as they need me.”

This month marks Youngsteadt’s first anniversary leading animal control, a position he said he hopes to maintain for many years.

“I could finish out my career here and be extremely happy,” he said.

Youngsteadt follows Robert Sauceda, who resigned amid a personnel investigation less than a year after the Kane County Board named him interim administrator. Some on the board opposed Sauceda in that role because he had no previous experience in animal control or veterinary medicine.

He also was a political supporter of Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen. In contrast, Youngsteadt said he earned a degree in veterinary medicine

after gaining experience in animal hospitals, where he started as a kennel worker. He considered working as a veterinarian – he even studied for the necessary exams – but had fallen in love with management, he said.

Youngsteadt came to Kane County from Chicago Animal Care and Control, where he served as shelter manager, he said. He appreciates the work previous administrators did before him and aims to solidify that foundation, he said.

“I don’t have a political agenda,” Youngsteadt said. “I have an animal agenda.”

His first year in Kane County included addressing procedures, revamping the Animal Control logo, formalizing and structuring the volunteer pro-

gram, and – he said – launching a new website, www.kanecountypets.com. He said he also tried to fulfill his legal mandates – rabies control and providing a yearly microchip clinic – without taking away business from veterinarians and animal hospitals.

“It’s about partnerships,” he said.

He received early praise from county leaders during public meetings and appears to have maintained that good first impression.

County Board member Monica Silva, who chairs the Public Health Committee, commended Youngsteadt this week for his proposed changes to the on-call policy and procedures for animal control wardens.

More West Nile virus cases reported in Kane County editorial@kcchronicle.com Two more cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Kane County, bringing the yearly total to three, the Kane County Health Department announced in a news release Thursday.

The cases affect two Pingree Grove residents, a 75-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, according to the release. It indicated both people were hospitalized and have since recovered.

According to the release, human cases of West Nile virus are likely in late summer

and early fall. Additionally, it states, the hot and dry summer has created the perfect combination for the Culex mosquito, the species known to carry the virus.

“It is possible that we will see more cases in people before the season is over, following a hard freeze,” the release states.

LOCAL BRIEF Some Geneva streets to close early Sunday

GENEVA – Several downtown Geneva streets will be closed to traffic early Sunday to accommodate the Fox Valley Marathon race course. The marathon begins in St. Charles and heads south into Geneva, impacting downtown streets and main arterial roads. Portions of State Street (Route 38) and Route 31 will be closed to motorists between 7 and 8:30 a.m. The marked detour route for local drivers traveling eastbound on State Street will be turning south on Seventh Street, east on Fulton Street, south on Fourth Street, east on South Street and south on Third Street to proceed toward Route 31. Westbound

traffic will utilize the same route in reverse. Motorists who want to continue east or west on State Street should take Route 25, Fabyan Parkway and Randall Road to travel through Geneva, according to a news release from the city of Geneva. Trucks should use that route and avoid the downtown area, if possible.

There will be numerous marathon officials and police officers providing traffic control. Drivers are advised to use caution when driving downtown. OBITUARIES ANN EDITH HORTON Ann Edith Horton (Childress), age 86, died at The Holmstad Assisted Living Community in Batavia, Illinois where she had spent the last three years of her life.

She experienced great loss just eight months prior with the death of her beloved husband, Harry, from which she never seemed to fully recover. Prior to their move to The Holmstad, Ann and Harry had lived in St. Charles, Illinois for almost fifty years in the home where they raised their five children.

Ann was born in Clinchco, Virginia to George and Georgia (Fleming) Childress on December 1, 1928. After

the death of her father at the age of three, her mother was able to hold the family together in Virginia for approximately eight years. At that time, the family moved to Mooseheart in Batavia, Illinois where Ann’s mother and three brothers would reside with her. During her wonderful years at Mooseheart, Ann was a cheerleader and swimmer. She made lifelong friends that she would cherish until the year of her death. Ann graduated as a registered nurse from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Aurora, Illinois where she met her true love and husband of almost 64 years on a blind date. They were married at House of God in Mooseheart on February 23, 1952.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Harrison Horton; by her mother and father; and her brothers, Charles and Clarence.

She is survived by her youngest

brother, Harry Lee Childress of Aurora, Illinois. Ann is also survived by her five children, Sue (John) Morden, Cyndie Horton-Cavanaugh (John Cavanaugh), Jim (Anne) Horton, David (Gail) Horton and Juli (Jim) Meier. She experienced her greatest joy through the lives of her sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at Saturday, September 19, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Geneva, 2300 South Street, Geneva, Illinois with visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 and the funeral service beginning at 3:00. Private interment will take place at Lincoln Memorial Park in Aurora, Illinois.

BATAVIA – Batavia police are investigating a burglary that occurred this week at Holy Cross Church and School, according to a news release issued Thursday.

The burglary occurred sometime during the overnight hours of Wednesday into Thursday at the church and school, at 2300 Main St. in Batavia, the news release stated.

Church employees discovered the burglary when they arrived to work, and police were dispatched to the property at 7:07 a.m. Thursday, according to the release.

Church and school officials Thursday were conducting an inventory of various items to determine any

loss, the release stated.

School officials made the decision to cancel classes Thursday because of the large amount of evidence processing that was conducted, according to the release.

Events scheduled for Thursday afternoon, including the youth bell and choir practices – as well as a school open house – also were canceled, according to the church’s website.

Police, church and school officials did not immediately return messages seeking comment Thursday afternoon.

The case remains an open and active investigation, the release stated.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact the Batavia Police Department Investigations Division at 630-454-2500.

Police to collect prescription drugs KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com CAMPTON HILLS – For the 10th time in five years, the Campton Hills Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration are giving the public an opportunity to get rid of unwanted prescription drugs, according to a news release.

The free and anonymous Take Back Day event is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at Village Hall, 40W270 LaFox Road, Campton Hills.

The release stated that only

pills and patches will be accepted because the DEA cannot take liquids or needles.

According to the release, the drug disposal service addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, as medicines that “languish” in homes are “highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.”

Additionally, the release states, other methods of disposal – such as flushing drugs down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards.

Last September, 309 tons of

prescription drugs were collected nationwide during Take Back Day events, according to the release.

It notes that when those results are added to the amounts collected during eight previous events, the DEA and its partners have accepted more than 4.8 million pounds of pills.

Eggar, 30, was only 25 years old when she opened her first agency in Lincolnshire with her husband, Justin. Their second office, now in St. Charles, opened in 2013.

The couple achieved Allstate’s highest honor, the Inner Circle Elite award, based on their ability to gain new business, maintain clients and a long list of other criteria. The designation is received by only the top 1 percent of agents in the country, and they achieved it in both 2013 and 2014, both times earning international trips that they passed up because of better gifts – the births of their children. But, Eggar said, they have their goals set on a three-peat in 2015 and a trip to Barcelona, Spain.

Local lawyer gives back Josh Feagans ‘very bright,’ ‘has a lot of energy’

hat started as a career in teaching turned into a prominent career as a lawyer for Geneva resident Josh Feagans.

Now a partner at Griffin Williams LLP, Feagans specializes in litigation, personal injury, counsel and real estate. And he recently chaired a trial and obtained one of the highest jury awards for an injury in Kane County.

For his work and community involvement, he is a winner of the Kane County Chronicle’s Best Under 40 award.

Feagans attended college at Western Illinois University, where he earned a BA in history with every intention of becoming a teacher. After speaking with several of his professors, he began reevaluating his career path and opted to continue his education at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Following school, Feagans started clerking for a business law attorney but realized that the 12-hour work days and seven-day work weeks weren’t really for him.

“It really weighed on me a little bit too much,” Feagans said. “I was not really getting the experience I wanted because I wanted to be in the courtroom and trials.”

Feagans then started working for an insurance defense firm, where he was hired by insurance companies to work on malpractice and other defense claims, before he grabbed the attention of Griffin Williams.

“I was always interested in being part of my own small business, instead of working for someone else,” Feagans said. “At the time, I was 32 and already had a good selection of clients I could take with me and forge out on my own, so to speak.”

The timing was perfect, because a former partner at Griffin Williams, Robin Villa, had just left to become a judge. It wasn’t a hard decision for partner Rick Williams to add Feagans to the mix at his firm.

“It’s easy to see when you meet him that he’s very bright, very personable, has a lot of energy and has what it takes to be a good lawyer,” Williams said. He’s one of those guys that means what he says and can back it up.

When you meet him, you have a high level of confidence with him right off the bat.”

Feagans came with recommendations from multiple colleagues of Williams, and

he was added as a partner in 2013.

“I think it’s very rare that you come across a lawyer and young professional with the ability, drive, determination and passion that you see with Josh,” Williams said.

When Feagans came to Griffin Williams, he was offered a name on the marquee as the third partner, but Williams said he turned it down.

“What you find with a lot of the firms is that everyone wants their names on them, and it kind of detracts from the firm,” Williams said.

“Josh realized that and said he didn’t want to change it and that we should keep the name as it is.”

His selfless acts carry over to his personal life, as well, as he spends time coaching his son’s baseball team and volunteering as a court-appointed special advocate.

“We’re very focused on the Fox Valley region, not just in business organizations but philanthropic, too,” Feagans said. “We’re involved in Kiwanis, youth baseball, football and other different aspects because we live and work in the St. Charles area.

“We have thrown ourselves into it as much as possible and are really just trying to be the fabric of the community.”

“I’m grateful I have that team of support.”

Success, Eggar said, comes from going above and beyond one’s role.

“You need to be willing to do more than the other people around you and more than the job requires,” she said.

Eggar also believes in the importance of getting involved in one’s community and doing more listening than talking.

“Volunteering in the community and investing in other people” is what makes it all worthwhile, Eggar said.

Her husband noted it is his wife’s ability to manage so many areas that impresses him.

“She has done a fantastic job developing a top-notch agency, while juggling a bunch of other responsibilities,” he said.

The couple welcomed their second child in August and have a 15-month-old daughter.

Even with all of the energy and time needed to care for her family, Eggar helped move their Allstate office from Geneva to St. Charles, has helped with training employees and served on panels with Allstate, her husband said.

“And there are probably 50 more things just like that she has done,” he said.

Fiorina plays the gender card, too

By MARGARET CARLSON Bloomberg View Women, take heart. Even a misogynistic blowhard like Donald Trump can be cowed.

In Wednesday’s debate of Republican candidates, Carly Fiorina was asked to comment on Trump’s recent insult about her looks. She rose so far above him, he didn’t lay a glove on her all night. “Women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said,” she replied, earning one of the biggest rounds of applause. Trump was in full retreat, “I think she has a beautiful face and she’s a beautiful woman,” he said sheepishly.

Fiorina was fearless. Women often don’t get to confront their tormentors directly, much less before 25 million television viewers. We’ve all known since grade school that it is bad form to criticize a person for their physical attributes, especially those they can do nothing about.

Trump recovered, however, recycling his original comment about Fiorina for an attack on Sen. Rand Paul, first saying that Paul was such a loser in the polls that he didn’t belong on the debate stage, then applauding himself for showing restraint toward such a loser. “I never attacked him or his looks, and believe me, there’s plenty of subject matter right there,” Trump said.

Fiorina never took the ample Trump bait that was dangled before her. Instead, she exposed him. The debate covered foreign policy and he knew nothing. He was defensive, recalling a flubbed interview as unfair because the interviewer, Hugh Hewitt, peppered him with questions about “Arab name, Arab name, Arab name.”

This is not to say that Trump has been stopped. Predictions of his demise have been wrong for months now, including my own. While Fiorina showed him up, neither she nor anyone else showed him the door.

Instead, she got in her defense, saying the economy was bad at the time and that her ouster came at the hands of a dysfunctional board. She got the best of Trump by hitting him for the bankruptcies of his casinos in Atlantic City.

She won the night with two emotional answers. On Planned Parenthood, she diverted the discussion away from the question of whether Republicans should shut down the government to block the group’s funding.

Rather, she expressed her disgust with allowing “a fully formed fetus” to be kept alive so that its brain can be harvested – a reference to undercover recordings that purport to show atrocities being committed at Planned Parenthood clinics. There’s a dispute over the validity of the tapes, but not about her giving the best answer to the question about what Republicans should do. “If we don’t force Obama to veto this bill, shame on us.”

On marijuana legalization, she advised caution, tugging at the heartstrings by revealing that she and her husband buried a child who died from drug addiction.

But just because Fiorina benefited from Trump’s misogyny she shouldn’t be mistaken for a feminist. She’s an opportunist.

Although she’s now scooping up the benefits of being attacked by Trump, she began her campaign attacking the other woman running for president.

Like so many Republican women, she flicks away the suggestion that her gender has helped her, yet claims special standing as the only woman on stage.

Nonetheless, her performance was laudable, if only because she has shown everyone else how to show up Trump for the empty suit that he is.

for the community and is only fighting for the wealthy donors who reside here.

The poor shape of our state’s finances is not the fault of our state workers, and many organizations continue to provide services to their community without compensation. By continuing to push his detrimental Turnaround Agenda as a my-way-or-the-highway approach, Rauner is doing the people who most need this budget passed a great disservice.

According to the Illinois State Board of Elections,

Rauner won the election by 3.92 percentage points with only 49.18 percent of all registered voters casting a ballot. This result does not give our governor the ability to hold the entire state hostage until his demands are met. He should show the people of Illinois how democracy works and offer to meet with our local leaders for open debate and discussion. Until that happens, we are all living in a dictatorship.

Freshman RB Alstott bursts onto scene in comeback

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Freshman running back Jonathan Alstott knew there was a place for him to make a difference on Kaneland’s football team this year.

The Knights certainly needed someone to step up, staring their second straight loss in the eyes, trailing by 17 in the second half of their Week 3 matchup with Rich Central.

Thats when Alstott came alive. Kaneland rode the freshman’s 34 carries for 167 yards and four second-half touchdowns to an important 42-36 comeback victory last Friday.

“That’s something we’ve seen him capable of since day one,” Knights coach Tom Fedderly said. “It’s what we’ve been waiting for. He’s a great kid, he works hard and that second half he had was just tremendous. But now that we’ve seen him do it, it’s what we expect from him.”

If the last name sounds familiar in football, it should.

Alstott is the cousin of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott. The now 41-year-old Mike Alstott, a standout at Joliet Catholic and Purdue, made his living in short-yardage and goal line situations Three of the four touchdowns Jonathan Alstott scored Friday were inside two yards, replicating Mike Alstott’s specialty during his 12year NFL career.

But it was more than surprising to hear that although his breakout game went more than noticed, Jonathan Alstott hasn’t spoken to Mike Alstott, ever.

“I’ve never talked to him,” Jonathan Alstott said with a smile. “I mean, my dad has talked to him and about him to me a bunch, but I don’t know, it just hasn’t happened.”

You’d think having a relative who had a successful NFL career would have been one of the reasons Jonathan Alstott plays football, is a running back or even the reason he wears the same No. 40 that his cousin wore.

But it all seems to be a coincidence at this point.

“I’ve always had the desire to play football,” Jonathan Alstott said. “It’s pretty cool to have someone as a relative

that has played in the NFL, but I’ve wanted to play football my entire life. I feel comfortable with it and, I don’t know, it hasn’t played too much of a role.”

It wasn’t just the four-touchdown, 167-yard performance that stuck out to Fedderly and Alstott’s Kaneland teammates, but more so how the likes of the 5-foot-8, 14-year-old Alstott has carried himself since getting to summer camps.

Andrew Kray, a senior twoway lineman and three-year varsity starter, was in a similar position a few years back and said he thinks Alstott’s work ethic is something that is beyond his years.

“Coming in at a young age, we weren’t really sure,” Kray said. “Running back is a tough position as it is, but he’s gotten to work since day one here. It’s almost like he wasn’t a freshman, you know. He impressed

me so much with how he carried himself, and it was kind of amazing to me.”

“No one really knew who he was coming in,” senior Mitchell Groen added. “We’ve gotten close with him since summer and he’s just like any one of us now. He’s going to help us win and make plays and that’s something we need around here.”

The buzz in the stands

The first round of Tri-Cities games are upon us, and what better way to start than a matchup of two unbeatens that have looked strong in all three contests thus far.

North manhandled West Chicago, 69-0, last week, while Geneva defeated Streamwood with a convincing 55-22 win.

“It’s going to be a great atmosphere,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “They will travel great and North is the real deal.

Between how well they have played and the intensity that will be there, we’re very excited and looking forward to Friday night.”

This certainly sticks out as the matchup to watch for me. North has good size on both lines, but the linebackers will try to keep that multi-dimensional Vikings offense in check.

Geneva quarterback Sean Chambers, with weapons such as Jack Wassel and Ryan Skibinski, has thrown for eight touchdowns, while running back Justin Taormina rushed for 100 yards in each of the first two games.

The combination has been key for the Vikings thus far, so it will be something to watch to see if Loudon Vollbrecht and the Geneva offensive line can create enough space for Taormina to develop a threat in the running game.

North Stars coach Rob Pomazak will counter will senior linebacker Billy Duhownik. Cornerback Jake Spaniol is another

North Star to watch on the defensive side, but Wicinski thinks his team has its hands full with trying to stop the active Duhownik and crew.

The X-factor

I know Geneva quarterback Sean Chambers has surprised some folks with how well he’s started, but I’m not too sure many people thought North counterpart Zach Mettetal would be where he was through three weeks. The junior signal caller has completed more than 72 percent of his passes, throwing for 613 yards and eight touchdowns in three games.

Wicinski is also very concerned with Mettetal’s ability to improvise and create something out of nothing.

“He’s nasty,” Wicinski said. “He’s got very good feet, and when he gets outside, he has the ability to break you down and make plays. We know he’ll make some plays, but hopefully we can limit them from being too big of plays.”

If North can keep the likes of defensive lineman Stephen Kemp away from Mettetal to give him time to throw to receivers Jayson Reckards, Kyle Novotney and Griffin Hammer, as well as create things himself when the pocket breaks down, Geneva could have its hands full.

Best-case scenario for the North Stars

The thing I believe Pomazak would most like to see happen would be to limit the Geneva running game. Taormina was held to less than 100 yards last week, but largely

because a large lead afforded the tailback some rest. If North can make the Geneva offense one-dimensional and make Wicinski call more passing plays than he’s used to, Pomazak likes his defense’s ability to defend the pass.

Best-case scenario for the Vikings Keeping Mettetal in check. That’s the bottom line. Sure, getting both the passing and running game going on the offensive end certainly will help, but the defense will be key for Geneva coming away with a victory. Wicinski has said several times how worried Mettetal’s athleticism makes him, but if the Vikings can pressure him with Kemp and company, while keeping him in the pocket, the North Stars’ offense could struggle, although we haven’t seen it yet.

Chris Casey’s prediction Geneva 35, St. Charles North 31 This was by far the toughest pick I’ve had to make of my four so far this season. I’m putting my 3-0 record on Geneva. It was a toss-up, but I think the playmaking ability of Chambers and Taormina, with the size up front, will be enough to get the Vikings a victory. Mettetal certainly will make his fair share of plays, and might even prove me wrong, but I think at home, in front of a raucous crowd, home-field advantage will play a slight part and Geneva will come away with a narrow victory for its ninth straight win at Burgess Field.

St. Francis’ Daniele Messa, a veteran of the Spartans’ recent postseason triumphs, has helped steady the Spartans again this season.

Three-time defending Class 3A state champion St. Francis climbed to Class 4A this season and will host a regional in the East Aurora Sectional complex.

“That’ll be a new experience for us,” Spartans coach Peg Kopec said. “The last time we were in the top division was in I believe 2006 and we managed to win [in Class AA], so we’re hoping we can manage to repeat. That’ll be pretty fun, pretty exciting.”

Regionals begin in about 40 days, opening the week of Oct. 26.

“It’s a new ballgame for us,” Kopec said. “New conference [Girls Catholic Athletic Conference], new state class division, so a lot of unknowns for us.

We’ve got, I think, a pretty tough schedule and some good tournaments.”

Knights’ Violett relishes second go-round

Cyndi Violett conceded that much had changed in the interim between her coaching stints at Kaneland.

Rally scoring and the libero position,

among other things, have emerged since she guided the Knights in the early 1990s and late 2000s.

Now in the second season of her Kaneland return, Violett finds the core principles of coaching have remained intact.

“You know, it’s just kind of like riding a bicycle,” Violett said. “It’s not a big deal.

You still have all those extra things you have to do outside the court with coaching. But as far as working with the girls, it’s like old hat. And it’s a lot of fun.”

Violett said she needed a break at the end of her first tenure, as she balanced the birth of her third child with the pursuit of a master’s degree.

She remained involved with the program, however, assisting with work at the official scorer’s table before serving on the coaching staffs of Knights predecessors Todd Weimer and Kerri McCastland.

Program pillars steady Royals

Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann was married in the early season and left the

reins to assistant Marie Matthews upon traveling outside the country for her honeymoon.

Hartmann felt secure in her temporary departure because of a strong cast of program veterans, namely junior middle hitter Meegan Hart, a Northwestern recruit from St. Charles, and classmate Martha Konovodoff, a libero from Sugar Grove.

In June, Konovodoff earned recognition as part of the Junior Volleyball Association’s All-National Team.

“She’s always been a top player. She’s always been an aggressive player,” Hartmann said. “She just needed to learn the different positioning of where you play defense, different positions and how to react.

“You always know where she is on the court, because there’ll never be a ball that drops there.”

Marmion hockey ‘fully committed’ to club 21

A recently formed hockey club at the Aurora school will make its debut in the Chicago Catholic Hockey League on Oct. 4 when it hosts Brother Rice at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva.

The team will play a junior varsity schedule and face each of the league’s 12 teams once this season.

Club director and founder Dan Heckle is convinced the club will do well in its inaugural year.

“It’s been a year of intense work,” said Heckle, who is Marmion’s director of community outreach and enrollment management. “I started with a business plan, had player names and a list of coaches. All of that has given me confidence that the team will thrive.”

The first year will be a probationary one for the Cadets.

“The league wants to make sure that we are funded and well put together before making us a permanent league member,” Heckle said.

He credited Geneva Cyclones hockey club coach Virgil Rutili for helping him start

the club.

“He gave me a template for organizing the team and gave me suggestions, like the best times to hold practice,” Heckle said.

Giving more students an opportunity to learn life lessons outside of the classroom inspired Heckle to form the club.

“Hockey is like football.

It teaches you everything you need to know about life,” Heckle said. “But unlike football, any kid on the ice can make a decision that can change the outcome of the game.”

Heckle approached the school over two years ago about organizing a club team.

Forty students expressed an interest, but no action was taken on forming a squad.

After joining the administrative staff last year, he brought up the subject again with Head of School Anthony Tinerella.

“Tinerella said, ‘Let’s take a look at and see if it is viable,’ ” said Heckle, also a Marmion alumnus.

Chris Imes, who played on the 1994 U.S. winter Olympic hockey team, coaches the squad.

“It was a tough decision; we had 15 candidates,” Heck-

le said. “He has the right balance for coaching: training, program development and player development. He has the ability to build a team, not just win games.”

Imes will be assisted by two fellow Marmion products, Nick and Jake Leon, who both played club hockey.

The players are anxious to get on the ice.

“I can’t wait for the season to start,” said Nick Greco, a freshman goalie from St. Charles. “We should have a good team.”

“It’s exciting to bring such a unique sport to Marmion,” said senior center Jared Weaver. “It’s going to be cool playing for school.”

Like many of his teammates, Weaver has played in club hockey for years.

“I started playing when I was four years old,” Weaver said.

The team practices from 6 to 7 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday morning at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“I like it. It’s a good way to start the day,” Greco said.

“You have fun early in the morning and then you can focus on school work.”

Weaver feels the early morning skates show that teammates are dedicated.

CHICAGO – Take a glance at a North Star whose accomplishments are shining around the world.

St. Charles North sophomore Audrey Ernst on Thursday won the International Triathlon Union world championship in the girls 16-19 sprint race, excelling in the 750-kilometer swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run situated around Grant Park.

Ernst covered the swim in 10:58, completed the bike in 31:15 and finished the run in 19:50.

“She’s just an amazing athlete,” said Morgan Lain, a Bradley freshman and former North cross country teammate who also represents the Tri-Cities -based Multisport Madness Triathlon Team. “To have her on our team is just awesome. She pushes us all to do better, and I’m so proud to see her keep getting better and better.”

Competing for the U23 world championship, Geneva product Kevin McDowell, a cancer survivor, finished fourth in 1:41.38.

Australian Jacob Birtwhistle was the winner in 1:40.51. On Saturday, McDowell will attempt to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, as he’ll need a top eight finish in the ITU Grand Final. He must be one of only two Americans in the top eight, as well. St. Charles East senior Alex Thomas was 15th in the boys 16-19 sprint competition, while Lain was 20th in the girls 16-19 sprint.

The fall season is an uplifting time of year

What an uplifting time of year.

Maybe we should replace “fall” with “splendid.”

Although I am still trailing through the health care system, it’s easy to be optimistic with some great caregivers such as Jill, Cherry, Nancy, Drew, Doxa, Carmen, Paul, Pat, Jeanette and so many others who display strong values about caregiving.

Let me just say that the book in progress about communication in health care systems will soon be bulging with anecdotes and silly stuff. All are invited to send me your mind-twisters and funny stuff.

Lately, I have been collecting phrases that have stuck in my mind. Mostly feel-good – “Wow, you did even better than yesterday!”

– stuff.

Long-anticipated – ”Da Cubs won again!”

Needed boost – “Did the Badgers really score 58 points on Saturday?”

Top feckless and incessant – “You have to realize there are other people here.”

Now, get ready for a 21-gun salute. Wait, that’s not the best tribute to a fine lady with a giving and gentle heart.

Better a standing ovation to my Badger buddy, Fran Gustafson, as she turns 101 years old.

I love to tell the story of watching her son, Ken, carry his STC halo as he joined the Wisconsin varsity. My seats were six rows behind the bench for home games.

On the other hand, Fran recalls that she and Wirth only missed one game ever. Any one of us vintage District 303 folks remember both Frances and Wirth with fondness and appreciation.

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry Here’s a flash! Alert the sisters at St. Patrick’s, my Saints cohorts, and the rest of us – some of whom need some good news.

Albert Van Thournout is a college history professor and now lives in the D.C. area, worships and frequently is the lector (reader of the Scripture) at the well-known and admired Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on the Catholic University campus.

And when arrangements were being made for the upcoming (less than a week) visit of His Holiness, Pope Francis, our Albert found himself in the inner circle.

The key event, to take place on the steps of the basilica (to accommodate the expected 30,000 people) will be the canonization (named as a saint) of the American Junipero Serra.

My old United Methodist heart is pounding with pride for Albert and admiration for Pope Francis and the faithful.

More to follow.

So, enjoy the season, get some apples, select your pumpkin, be watchful as the colors begin and be true to your team.

By Phil Baert, a St. Charles resident There is a high society, we all know them A small percentage of our people belong What percentage that is Depends on whom you ask If you were to ask me I’d say a much larger number than most people Ask a rich person, he would say One or two percent Ask someone living in poverty They’d say, ninety nine percent Driving around so many neighborhoods Not knowing the circumstances of the inhabitants Almost all of us would agree with the poor There probably is a number That described the high societal class But what does that mean Does it mean he will never need help Or will he be able to help someone else If he would lend a hand to the many poor Think about it, he would move up a class A much higher class in our eyes Could his example be a guide for others How grand that would be High society coming down To the poor classes of people Giving them hope, a chance at a better life That chance however can’t be taken for granted They must then begin to grasp At the openings that have been provided them Middle classes should also reach out with a helping hand Lifting them up, not with money But with jobs, so they can start their climb To acceptance by their so called peers When all this comes to pass A different meaning can be applied to our society A society that cares and loves Each and everyone then will be in the class called High Society

Dear Abby: Today was my

high school reunion. I was the most notable student for all the wrong reasons. I was born with some birth defects and learning disabilities. I overcame them, but it was hard. While working blue-collar jobs, I lived in my car for a few years.

On a cold winter night several years ago, I met Dr. X in the emergency room. He was a former classmate of mine, and we pretended not to know one another. He discovered I was living in my car and heard some of my story. Then he arranged for me to be admitted to the hospital for a day so I could get warmed up and recover. When I left the hospital, I found a $100 bill in the gas tank door of my van. I’m sure it was from him.

I now have a home of my own and I’m doing OK, considering everything. When I sent my

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips reservation and check to the reunion committee, it was returned uncashed with a $50 bill along with a note saying “Please don’t come.” The reunion was being held on the estate of Dr. X. I guess my classmates are more closed-minded than I thought they would be. I was hoping age would mellow them. In addition to the reservation return, I have seen a few forwarded emails mocking my attempts to find out about the event. I hope none of those people were blessed with a child with learning or physical issues.

I guess people never change on some things.

Stopping antidepressant calls for slowly cutting back Dear Doctor K: I’ve been on an SSRI antidepressant for a few months, and it has really helped improve my depression. How long do I need to take this medication?

Dear Reader: If you’re fortunate enough to find an antidepressant that lifts your dark mood, and you aren’t too troubled by its side effects, your doctor likely will renew the prescription indefinitely. As long as you continue taking the medication, you are unlikely to suffer a relapse of your depression.

But perhaps you’re having bothersome side effects. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs, like fluoxetine (Prozac) or sertraline (Zoloft), sometimes cause side effects. The most frequent ones include insomnia, irritability, sexual dysfunction and dizziness (such as when standing up). You may want to see if the benefits of the drug persist, while the side effects disappear, when you stop taking it. It’s a reasonable thing to discuss with your doctor.

The decision to go off antidepressants should be considered carefully. It should be made with the support of your physician or therapist. Together, you will want to make sure you’re not stopping prematurely, risking a recurrence

If you decide to quit, you and your doctor should take steps to minimize or avoid discontinuation symptoms. These can occur if you stop antidepressants too abruptly.

Discontinuation symptoms are not the same as a relapse of depression. However, they can include anxiety and depression, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a table that can help you tell the difference between discontinuation symptoms and the symptoms of a relapse.)

Discontinuation symptoms may also include tremor, restlessness and an uneven gait. You may have difficulty speaking or chewing. Some people experience “brain zaps.” These are feelings that resemble an electric shock to your head. Some people describe the sensation as “brain shivers.”

You can usually avoid these problems by slowly cutting the dose of your antidepressant in increments. You should allow two

to six weeks or longer between dose reductions.

Your doctor can instruct you in tapering your dose, and your schedule will depend on several factors. These include which antidepressant you’re taking, how long you’ve been taking it, your current dose and any symptoms you may have had during previous medication changes. If you experience unpleasant symptoms in response to a dose reduction, you may want to taper more gradually.

There are no hard and fast rules for getting off antidepressants except that the approach should be individualized.

Being on a medicine for life is not the same as being “addicted” to the medicine. Your body simply may need it. In the case of the SSRI antidepressants, the chemistry of your brain may need it. People with Type 1 diabetes almost always need to be on insulin for the rest of their lives. Indeed, insulin prolongs their lives. In people who suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts, so do antidepressants.

Lungs will be pink in months Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and have been smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for the past three years. I want to quit for three reasons. First, I’m concerned about smoking and my health; next, I don’t like the fact that my dorm room, car and clothes smell like a chimney; and finally, the price of a pack of cigarettes has gone out of sight.

I would like to quit cold turkey because I’m not into nicotine gum or patches. I realize that it will be a difficult task, but I think I can pull it off. I’d appreciate any tips you can give me. I’ll write to you in a month to let you know that I’ve reached my goal. – Jed, Macomb Dear Jed: I contacted the American Cancer Society and asked for the best way to stop smoking cold turkey. This is their reply: 1. Start by getting rid of temptation. Throw out all cigarettes, first breaking them in half and wetting them down.

Clean out ashtrays and discard all matches and lighters.

2. Exercise to relieve tension.

3. When you get an urge to smoke, take a deep breath, hold it for 10 seconds and release.

4. Eat three well-balanced meals a day.

This will aid you in maintaining a constant blood sugar level, which helps prevent your urge to smoke. Avoid spicy and sugary foods that may trigger a desire to smoke.

5. Cleanse your body of nicotine by drinking lots of liquids, but pass up caffeinated drinks and alcohol.

6. The first two weeks are the most difficult.

That’s when the nicotine craving acts as though it has a life of its own,

You can consider yourself an ex-smoker when you’ve been tobacco-free for six weeks. Do write to me in a month and let me know how you’re doing. I’m positive you will reach your goal.

Dr. Wallace: A girl wrote to you wanting to know the fastest way to get sober after drinking too much alcohol. You told her that nothing could speed up getting sober. How could you say that? My older brother works at a homeless shelter and he said that drunks are given black coffee and a cold shower and after about fifteen minutes they’re nearly sober. I also read where a cemetery in Southern California offered free hot, black coffee every New Year’s Eve for drivers who had been drinking.

So, what do you have to say about that? – Gina, Reno, Nevada Dear Gina: Drinking coffee in a cemetery might have a lasting effect on the drinker if he weren’t too drunk to notice the headstones.

Drinking black coffee and taking a cold shower do nothing more than produce a wet drunk.

Only time will sober a person, and nothing can speed up the process.

In my opinion, North, with such a strong doubleton, should have raised one no-trump to three no-trump. It is possible that, if a 4-4 spade fit exists, four spades will make and three no-trump fail, but that is unlikely, and when a major-suit fit was not found, it just gave the defenders free information.

South starts with six top tricks: three spades, one heart (after winning the first trick), one diamond and one club. If the diamond finesse is winning, the contract will make with at least one overtrick. But if the finesse is losing, maybe West will not know that South’s heart king is now a singleton.

After West leads the heart five and dummy plays the six, East must resist the natural reaction to cover with his eight. When third hand cannot contribute a nine or higher, he should give count. Here, he plays his three: low from an odd number. This tells West that South started with only two hearts; it could not be four because he denied a four-card major in the auction.

Declarer will win with his heart jack, cross to dummy with a spade, and run the diamond 10. Now West should work out to win with his diamond king and cash the heart ace, which results in a speedy down one.

Section 3. All unexpended balances of proceeds received annually from public library taxes not in excess of statutory limits may be transferred to the Special Reserve Fund, heretofore established according to 75 ILCS 16/40-50, pursuant to plans developed and adopted by this Board, and said unexpended balances shall be accumulated in this Fund for the purpose of erecting a building to be used as a library or to purchase a site for the same, or to purchase a building, or to repair, remodel or improve an existing library building, or to build an addition thereto, to furnish necessary equipment thereto, to acquire library materials such as books, periodicals, films, recordings and electronic data storage and retrieval facilities in connection with either the purchase or construction of a new library building or the expansion of an existing library building, or for the emergency expenditures for the repair of an existing library building or its equipment, or to do any or all of these things.

Section 4. Except as otherwise provided by law, no further appropriations shall be made at any other time within such fiscal year, provided that this Board may from time to time make transfers between the various items in any fund, or appropriations in excess of those authorized by the budget in order to meet an immediate and unforeseen emergency by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of all of the trustees, as provided by 75 ILCS 16/30-90, et seq. provided that nothing in this section shall be construed to permit transfer between funds required by law to be kept separate. Any remaining balances after the close of the fiscal year shall be available until August 30th for the authorization of payment of such obligations incurred prior to the close of the fiscal year, and until September 30th for the payment of such obligations or for the transfer of unexpendable balances thereof to be accumulated, as provided by 75 ILCS 16/30-90.

Section 2.

There is hereby appropriated from the taxes to be levied for the fiscal year and other sources of income, the sums, to be divided among the several corporate objects and purposes for said District for the aforesaid fiscal year, as follows: General Fund Appropriations: Annual Operations $ 8,199,232.00 Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund 425,000.00 Social Security Fund 300,000.00

Section 6. The Board established a Working Cash Fund, pursuant to 75 ILCS 16/35-35 and 16/30-95, as a separate and additional special fund for the sole purpose of enabling the library board to have in its funds, at all times, sufficient money to meet demands thereupon for ordinary and necessary and committed expenditures for library purposes. Pursuant to the aforesaid, the fund having been created, the proceeds have been deposited in a special and separate fund, and shall be carried over from year to year without in any manner reducing or abating a future annual library tax levy, and shall not be deemed a current asset available for library purposes; and the proceeds of such fund may be transferred from the library Working Cash Fund to the library General Fund, and disbursed therefrom in anticipation of collection of taxes lawfully levied for general library purposes; and such taxes when collected, and after payment of tax warrants, shall be drawn upon to reimburse the Working Cash Fund; and all of the above pursuant to 75 ILCS 16/35-35. Any interest accruing from the investment of these funds shall be transferred to the General Fund to be applied to meet ordinary and necessary and committed expenses pursuant to IL. Op. Atty. Gen. 87-003 and other legal authority.

Section 7. Pursuant to 75 ILCS 16/35-5(b) et.seq. there has been established a “Building Equipment & Maintenance .02% Fund,” as set forth in the resolution of the corporate authority of this Library, published in full in a local newspaper when passed, said fund being for the purchase of sites and buildings, for the construction and equipment of buildings, for the rental of buildings required for library purposes and for the maintenance, repairs and alterations of library buildings and equipment. Any expenditure of these funds from this special fund shall be limited solely to the purposes set forth in said statute, or such other purposes as set forth in said statute as may be from time to time provided by statutory amendment.

Section 8. This Board hereby certifies that all applicable provisions of 35 ILCS 200/18-55 et seq., as amended, (“The Illinois Truth-in-Taxation Statute”) have been complied with.

Section 9. This Ordinance is passed pursuant to statutory authority and the Illinois Public Library District Act, 75 ILCS 16/35-5(b) et seq., 16/30-85 et seq., and 16/40-50 et seq., the Illinois Municipal Budget Law, 50 ILCS 330/1 et seq., the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (“PTELL” or “Tax Cap”), 35 ILCS 200/18-85 et seq. and 200/18-185 et seq., and the Illinois Revenue Act, 35 ILCS 200/18-85 et seq. and other statutes hereunto appertaining.

Section 10. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval according to law, and any resolutions or ordinances in conflict therewith are hereby repealed; and should any part of this Ordinance be adjudged invalid or unconstitutional, such adjudication shall affect only that part of this act specifically covered thereby, and shall not affect any other provisions or parts of this act, but shall be severable therefrom.
