A ‘results-oriented’ person Dr. Colleen Noe runs chiropractic practice and is active in the community

In addition to running her own chiropractic practice, Dr. Colleen Noe is a St. Charles Chamber of Commerce Board member. Her Best Under 40 nominator, Kathy Matthews, wrote Colleen “grew up in St. Charles and now returned to St. Charles to practice.

She is very bright with a personality that quickly engages everyone she meets. She is someone people don’t forget because she truly cares about others.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com Everyone knows a super-person. You know, someone who accomplishes more than the regular person.

Dr. Colleen Noe is one of those people. She’s involved in everything and has a huge heart for helping out and giving back. She is a winner of the Kane County Chronicle’s Best Under 40 award.

She recently provided a window into herself: “My parents like to joke that one of my most-used phrases is, ‘I can do it myself.’ I’m fiercely independent and have always had the mindset that nothing in life is handed to you, and anything that you want, you have to be prepared to work for. I’m a results-oriented kind of person.

So, when there is something I want, I pursue it with all of my effort until I have accomplished it.”

Noe’s activities primarily are divided into two categories: community, and her chiropractic practice run through Integrative Family Healthcare in St. Charles. In fact, she said her favorite accomplishment is “becoming a chiropractic physician.”

“It has been my lifelong goal to become a doctor and help people, and I’m thankful every day that I get to do that,” she said.

That goal of becoming a chiropractor began after playing high school and college rugby resulted in chronic back pain. Nothing seemed to help until Noe saw a chiropractor, and she was inspired to do the same for others.

Noe was asked to talk to senior citizens in the community, and she chose to talk

She explained falls are damaging to confidence, independence and health, and they are largely preventable.

Now, helping seniors prevent falls has become one of her many projects.

“I love to hear from the seniors that have attended a fall prevention workshop about how they have used what they’ve learned to make changes at home in order to prevent future falls and be able to stay in their home longer,” she said. “That’s my whole goal in educating them – to keep them where they want to be as long as possible.”

In addition to helping seniors, Noe focuses on sports injuries and injuries caused from playing a musical instrument. Most people don’t think about the bodily strain from playing an instrument; however, she explained: “I’ve been volunteering with the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra for over 15 years, and throughout that time have seen them grow into one of the largest, most passionate and well-regard-

ed youth orchestras in the Chicagoland area.”

Noe is a doula: a birth coach/companion. She explained: “All the births that I have attended as a doula/ birth coach have been wonderful, and the most memorable are always the first-timers. Just being there to witness their experience of bringing life into the world is [incredibly] rewarding.”

Between her chiropractic practice, giving fall prevention workshops and aiding in births, Noe finds time to be active in her community.

“I have been so fortunate to be involved with the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce as a board member,” she said. “They are a dynamic organization that really

puts the focus of all of their hard work on the community and its businesses.”

Noe also still finds time to unwind.

“What I do to recharge my battery is spend time with my wonderfully supportive husband and our [pet] boxers,” she said. “They bring me such joy. Everyone who knows me knows that I’m an animal lover, but I’ll always have a soft spot for boxers.”

Her personal mantra is a poem that reads: “I have only just a minute. Only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, can’t refuse it. Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it. But it’s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it. Give account if I abuse it. Just a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it.”

LOCAL NEWS Home builder helps others Joshua Hall ‘nuts and bolts’ of family business

Co-owner of John Hall Custom Homes based in St. Charles, Joshua Hall was nominated for a Best Under 40 award by his brother, John.

“Joshua is my brother and partner in one of the very few surviving and successful custom home building companies in all of Kane County,” John stated.

“He is a second-generation owner, and in his position he works personally on each and every home, making sure that the project lives up to the strict standards that our father, John Hall Sr., instilled in us.”

His father owned John Hall Custom Homes, and Hall enjoyed picking up scraps and sweeping houses.

In 2010, Hall, 39, and his brother John took over the business when their father retired. Hall now is president/ construction manager of John Hall Custom Homes.

Although it might seem like an obvious progression, Hall originally spread his wings in another direction.

With a pilots license and a passion for flying, he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with the goal of becoming a corporate pilot.

Before Hall completed the program, he was needed to help with the family business.

“It was the best thing that ever could have happened to me at that time,” he said. “I got to work one-on-one with my father and was able to learn so much, which paved the way to where I am now.”

Because of his work and dedication to the community, Hall is a recipient of the Kane County Chronicle’s Best Under 40 honor.

Hall completed the construction management program at Southern Illinois University in 2000.

But after graduating, he did not go back to work with his father.

“I wanted to earn the respect of my peers and not be told that I was handed a job because of who I was,” Hall said of working two years with Neumann Homes.

He has been building on that reputation ever since.

“I love being able to take an idea from a client and make it happen for them and seeing

Surviving in business as a second-generation owner and during the recession has been a major accomplishment.

“Going into the worst recession since the Depression was single handedly the hardest time in my family’s life,” he said. “Knowing that we were able to survive and help keep over 90 percent of our subcontractors going and all of their families truly is the most rewarding accomplishment in my young career.”

Hall, who was raised in St. Charles and lives with his

wife, Lisa, and three daughters in Sycamore, enjoys giving back to others.

Two years ago, Hall and his brother, John, were asked by the Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation to build a playhouse. The playhouses are raffled off and funds go to the organization.

“We thought what better way to donate by doing what we know best and that is how the playhouse program started,” Hall said.

Now known as the Ultimate Playhouse project, Hall helps recruit other builders to generate money for the organization. He hopes to expand the project and possibly build a dog house to benefit local animal shelters.

Hall’s brother said Hall is the “nuts and bolts” of the family business and is proud of how he has gone above and beyond for the foundation.

“Josh committed to the charity and is instrumental to the Ultimate Playhouse projects; he even moves them personally from location to location,” John Hall said.

“He also has increased our overall quality in our homes, and has helped us keep a long-lasting tradition alive.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com As part of Illinois Rail Safety Week, law enforcement agencies are promoting safety for motorists and pedestrians around train tracks, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

“The city of St. Charles no longer has the number of train crossings it once did, but many of our residents encounter train crossings on a daily basis as they travel through surrounding communities,” the release stated. “Most Americans are unaware of the dangers associated with railroad crossings and trains.”

Here are some statistics included in the release:

• It takes the length of 18 football fields for a freight train traveling at 55 mph to stop.

• People are 40 times more likely to die in a crash with a train than in a crash with another vehicle, and 95 percent of rail-related deaths involve a motorist trying to beat a train or people trespassing on the tracks.

• In 2014, 270 people were killed or injured at highway rail grade crossings, and 915 died or suffered injuries from trespassing on railroad property.

Police promote Rail Safety Week in Illinois

Barn Sale set for this weekend at Kane County Fairgrounds

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The St. Peter Barn Sale will be open for business this weekend, operating from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

It is a chance for parishioners at Geneva-based St. Peter Catholic Church to work together, a means for recycling and repurposing items at affordable prices, as well as raising money for the church, organizers said.

To get a better idea of how much stuff there will be, volunteers unloaded 19 trailers of goods for the sale, organizers said.

“It takes 400 volunteers from the time we start collecting in March,” said volunteer Lisa O’Leary-Volk of Geneva. “It’s very labor intense, but it’s kind of a labor of love. It’s a lot of

hands and organization.”

O’Leary-Volk is in charge of the furniture department this year. She said the department will be offering hundreds of couches and chairs.

“We even have an electric scooter this year,” O’LearyVolk said.

The sale features just about everything a person could imagine – from holiday decor to lamps, clothes of all sizes and seasons, housewares, craft items, books, DVDs and even old-style VHS tapes, she said.

“We are still going to have VHS tapes because those are hard to find,” O’Leary-Volk said.

Organizers have had to refuse some items, such as bigtube TVs and old fixtures, such as bath tubs and toilets, she said.

“You cannot even give away old TVs anymore, so it has to be flat screen,” O’Leary-Volk said.

“We’re trying to keep up with the times, or we have to pay to recycle them.”

The sale also will feature St. Peter’s Country Market, with baked goods and donated pro-

duce from volunteers’ gardens, she said.

“If you can’t find it at Barn Sale, it doesn’t exist, or you didn’t need it,” O’Leary-Volk said. “It’s easier to say what we

don’t sell than what we do.”

They will be participating in the Kane County Office of Emergency Management’s annual regional search and rescue exercise, OEM Director Don Bryant said, describing it as a “fairly big event.”

Members of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the Kane County Forest Preserve District and the South Elgin,

Fox River and St. Charles fire departments are expected to participate, as are teams from nearby counties, Bryant said.

He said the exercise gives the various personnel an opportunity to meet each other and “makes us more efficient” for when an emergency requires they work together.

Preparing for the event takes “a ton of planning,” Bryant said, noting his staff has been working on it for well over a month.

Only a select few will arrive at the forest preserve knowing the emergency scenario, which will involve lost persons portrayed by volun-

teers, he said.

Last year, the exercise was at the Campton Forest Preserve. Moving it to the Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve in northern St. Charles Township gives participants a different terrain – and thus different challenges – to practice in, Bryant said.

The drill is planned from 2 to 11 p.m., he said.

The Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve, along with the nearby Tekakwitha Woods Forest Preserve, will remain open to the public, Bryant said. He said signs will be posted at the entrances to notify visitors of the event.

ST. CHARLES – Nine-yearold Leanna Swenson learned in school that if a word looks weird, it’s probably not spelled right.

The Munhall Elementary School fourth-grader spotted a real-life example during a recent walk around her St. Charles neighborhood with her mom, Jennifer.

Something about the street sign at an intersection of Independence and Banbury avenues caught their eye during their usual walk Aug. 22, the duo said.

“We both saw it together,” the girl’s mother said.

They soon realized what was missing – an “N” – so instead of Independence, the sign read “Indepedence.”

The misspelling prompted them to check other Indepen-

dence Avenue signs, which all were spelled correctly, they said.

Then Jennifer Swenson posted a picture of the incorrect sign on the neighborhood Facebook page, she said, and someone must have notified the city because it was promptly fixed.

“Within 24 hours, we had a brand new sign,” she said.

Leanna said the city’s response surprised her.

“I knew it would get fixed but not that fast,” the girl said.

Lisa Garhan, the city’s community and public affairs coordinator, wrote in an email the city takes a proactive approach to maintaining city streets, but help from residents always is appreciated.

“Usually, that means we are alerted to a burned-out streetlight or newly minted pothole,” she wrote. “But in this case, we are glad we were able to replace the sign so quickly and need to look into where our spell check went wrong!”

The Swensons said the sign was one of three recent instances they called on the city for help. Workers removed a hornet nest near their home, and police responded to a case of vandalism, they said.

CHARLES – A few streets in St. Charles will be affected by the 2015 Fox Valley Marathon, St. Charles police announced in a news release. The marathon will be from 7 a.m. until about 2 p.m. Sunday and will start on First Street near Illinois Street in St. Charles, according to the release. The run continues south to Aurora before returning to the finish line back in St. Charles on the Illinois Street bridge.

First Street between Illinois and Indiana streets will be closed beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday, the release stated.

The Prairie Street and Illinois Street bridges will be closed

during the event, according to the release. Vehicles that need to cross the Fox River should use the Main Street bridge or the Red Gate bridge.

The first part of the marathon goes from First Street in St. Charles and turns onto Geneva Road (Route 31), which will be reduced to one lane and then detoured to Anderson Boulevard in Geneva as the runners continue south to Geneva city limits. Police and emergency personnel will be in place along Riverside Avenue (Route 25) to assist with traffic direction for the return phase of the run, which will be mostly on the eastern portion of the Fox River Trail.

Traffic on Riverside Avenue east of the river will be reduced

to one lane between Moore and South Fifth avenues as the runners return to St. Charles, the release stated.

Police and emergency management personnel will be positioned at key locations to assist with traffic direction, according to the release. Motorists are advised to expect delays when traveling throughout the city.

The Prairie Street Bridge on Saturday will be temporarily closed at the 3 p.m. start of the Fox Valley Kids Marathon. The closure is expected to be less than 30 minutes, according to the release.

St. Charles police urge motorists to watch for runners, spectators and emergency responders assisting with the event.

LOCAL BRIEF Overnight lane closures set on Route 31 in Elgin ELGIN – Temporary, overnight lane closures on Route 31 in Elgin are scheduled to remove bridge beams as part of the Route 31 Interchange Project on Interstate 90.

Electronic message signs will be put in place in advance to alert drivers in advance of the overnight closures. Weather permitting, overnight lane closures will be scheduled on Route 31 with one lane closing in each direction at 6 p.m. today between Tollgate Road and Davis Road, and intermittent, full closures, each lasting no longer than 15 minutes, scheduled between 10 p.m.

and 5 a.m. Friday. All lanes on Route 31 are scheduled to reopen by 6 a.m. ahead of the morning rush hour.

If all work is not completed tonight, similar closures will be scheduled Friday night. The roadway closure is being coordinated with Kane County, the city of Elgin and the Illinois Department of Transportation, along with local police and fire departments. St. Charles doctors seeking readers’ questions before cancer workshop KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Two St. Charles chiropractors are seeking readers’ questions about cancer in advance of a workshop they are planning for October called “Cancer Killers,” according to a press release.

Hosted by siblings Kalie and James Judge, the workshop will address the nature of major illnesses that affect women and why preventative solutions are the same for most illnesses.

Attendees will leave with a 30-day wellness challenge and a plan to take control of their health, according to the release.

16 Anderson Animal Shelter hosts Pets-A-Palooza in St. Charles

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Anderson Animal Shelter is hosting a fundraiser, the Pets-A-Palooza Pet Parade and Festival, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W584 Dean St., St. Charles.

The free, family-friendly event features contests, demonstrations, pet games, exhibits, adoptions and vendors of pet-related items. Early registration is available online at www.andersonanimalshelter.org.

The cost to walk in one or all of four pet parades is $10 for an individual or $35 for a family of four.

Registration on the day of the event will be available for a slightly higher charge, development director Holly Alcala said.

The parades’ starting times are staggered and start at 11:40 a.m., 12:40 p.m., 1:40 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., to fit each family’s schedule Alcala said.

“So they can walk in one or more parades,” Alcala said.

“And we encourage people to walk with their leashed pets.

We do not know if everybody

will come with dogs. And the route is blacktopped and handicapped accessible.”

Happy Jack Dog, a golden-labrador retriever mix, will be performing various tricks. There will be an agility demonstration and various vendors. Food will be available for purchase, she said.

“In addition to Anderson’s available, adoptable dogs, several other rescues will be there as well – As Good As Gold, A Little R and R Animal Sanctuary, the Anti-Cruelty Society, Safe Haven Dog Rescue and Dog Guardians,” she said. “We will have lots of different adoptable pets there for viewing.”

The fundraising goal to support the shelter is $50,000, to be raised through walks and bike rides, and a First Giving online page, Alcala said.

“We have created the parade part to be similar to the way other nonprofits will raise money,” she said. “The $50,000 is to support our mission and our work.”

Though this is the shelter’s first such event, Alcala said she is expecting at least 500 people to come and go over the course of the day.

All dolled up THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel It all started when I, around the age of 2, received a Bitty Baby doll for my birthday. Clad in teal footie pajamas, the doll was originally christened Lil’ Baby. Later named Ella, she was one of my favorite things to play with as a toddler.

I received a doll named Elizabeth next, as a gift for my seventh birthday. I was instantly intrigued with her beautiful blonde hair and pink satin gown. She became Ella’s “big sister” and the subject of many happy hours of playtime.

Kit was the last addition to my doll family, and I got her when I was 10. Her wardrobe consisted of adorable sun dresses and colorful hair clips, a perfect fit for when doll dress-up was the activity of choice.

Ella, Elizabeth and Kit are all American Girl dolls, manufactured by the mega-company that produces dolls, outfits, accessories and more for young girls. Initially, each doll was representative of a specific time period in American history, such as colonial times or the Great Depression. Since that time, the brand has expanded to include modern day dolls familiar with sports and technology. If you have a daughter between the ages of 4 and 12, you (and your wallet) are probably well acquainted with American Girl and its offerings.

However, if you live in a primarily male household, perhaps the concepts of “Girl of the Year” and “Innerstar U” are foreign to you.

Growing up as the oldest of four sisters, American Girl was a huge source of joy for most of my childhood. I fondly remember hours upon hours spent with my sisters, creating an entire world for our dolls involving their school, friends and other activities. Our rooms hosted elaborate houses for the dolls, and our basement was often cluttered with

various shops and other establishments created for their – and our – amusement. The dolls’ pets got in on the fun, too, from tiny dogs to beautiful horses. American Girl provided an activity for my sisters and I to enjoy together, and – to this day – playing with our dolls is one of my happiest childhood memories.

The American Girl store in downtown Chicago is the pinnacle of excitement for any doll owner, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a two-story shopping experience packed with American Girl merchandise, a doll hair salon, a cute little café and even a bookstore featuring books based on the dolls. Though it certainly isn’t cheap to have a shopping spree here, it’s worth the visit, even if it only results in window shopping.

And if you bring someone who happens to own American Girl products, it’s basically heaven on Earth. I speak from experience.

Though Elizabeth, Kit and Ella still take up residence in my room, I admittedly don’t devote the time to them that I used to.

Perhaps if I have daughters someday, they’ll get to experience the same joy that I did when playing with my dolls. I sincerely hope they do.

It’s not often that you find a product with as much quality and staying power as American Girl dolls. Not only do they keep young girls occupied for hours and hours, they also inspire them to be creative individuals with big imaginations and even bigger dreams. Though the little girl in me may be growing up, my heart for these dolls hasn’t diminished one bit.

Bernie Sanders isn’t as progressive as you think THE WASHINGTON POST Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, delivered a forceful message in a speech at Liberty University on Monday: Inequality is too high; the wealth gap is immoral; and rich people have rigged the economy.

Though hyperbolic, this message appears to be resonating. In a time of anxiety about the country’s economic future, the latest Post-ABC News poll shows Sanders cutting into Hillary Rodham Clinton’s once commanding lead for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Beyond the hyperbole, however, must be real policy. And on that score, this self-described socialist from New England is less progressive – in the real effect of his proposals – than he sounds.

His promises, according to a new analysis from the Wall Street Journal, would cost the govern-

ment an eye-popping $18 trillion over 10 years. Instead of carefully crafting policy to help those who need it, he would shower largess on young and old, poor and well-to-do.

For example: Sanders wants to make public college free for everyone.

“We have in this country sufficient amounts of money to put more people in jail than any other country on earth,” Sanders said Monday.

“But apparently we do not have enough money to provide jobs and education to our young people. I believe that’s wrong.”

Of course, there’s only so much money that the government can realistically remove from the prison system. But say Sanders could take out $47 billion, the cost of the higher education bill he unveiled in May. Or say he found the money somewhere else – he proposed a financial transactions tax in the bill. Why would Sanders want to give

any of those funds to the wealthy? Eliminating public college tuition makes it free for everyone, poor or rich, leaving less of that $47 billion to help low-income people who really struggle to pay for college, day care and other basic needs.

Sanders makes a similar misstep on the student debt “crisis.” He would drastically reduce the rate on new student loans and refinance existing loans on similarly generous terms. Yet plenty of college graduates go on to high-paying careers and do not need help with their loans.

Sanders identifies significant challenges, and we support higher taxes to meet some of them. But the political barriers even to modest new spending are formidable. A true progressive agenda would seek to dismantle those barriers, not create new entitlements for the upper middle class.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Bulldog’s Cellar bar and grill opens in downtown Batavia New restaurant opens in former RendezVu space

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The owner of the new Bulldog’s Cellar hopes that his bar and grill will become as well known as the nickname Bulldog.

The name is a reference to Batavia High School’s mascot, which is a bulldog.

The bar and grill opened June 22 at 1 E. Wilson St. in Batavia, in the space that formerly housed The RendezVu restaurant. It stayed open during the transition.

“We didn’t want to interrupt the business and the regular clientele that we had,” said new owner Jason Keller, who recently moved from Elgin to Aurora.

As its name implies, the focus of the bar and grill is on its downstairs space.

Local bands perform in the space, and Bulldog’s hosts events such as Game Night – featuring activities that resemble TV shows like “Wheel of Fortune,” “Family Feud,” “Jeopardy” and “Name That Tune.”

“It’s a social event,” Keller said. “It’s something for people to do, like trivia night.”

Bulldog’s also hosts open mic nights on Thursdays, which have proven to be popular, Keller said. It also hosts dart tournaments.

“Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are our busiest nights,” he said.

The upstairs space has been renovated as well, including the addition of two 70-inch flat television screens.

“We’re trying to appeal to multiple groups of people,” Keller said. “We’re doing special events up there, like we do a poker league on Sunday nights. We’ve done Vino van Gogh up there, which worked really well.”

Vino van Gogh hosts events at local venues. Participants have the option to drink while painting for recreation.

The upstairs space can also be rented out for private parties, Keller said.

In addition, Bulldog’s Cellar has an outdoor patio, which has proven to be a popular attraction. The patio offers a picturesque view of the Fox River.

Bulldog’s is currently only open for dinner. Items include appetizers, such as wings, chicken tenders, Philly Cheesesteak potato skins, homemade nachos and red pepper hummus.

Entrees include burgers, fish and chips, chicken wraps and the beer brat plate. One of Keller’s favorite items on the menu is the Bulldog Burger, which is a half-pound beef patty topped with half of a beer brat, bacon, cheese and a fried egg. The meal also comes with fries.

“It’s different,” Keller said. “It’s kind of like a little gut stuffer. I’m definitely full after eating that.”

The Philly cheesesteak appetizer – which features six pieces served with jack and cheddar cheeses, bacon, sliced tomato and sour cream – also has been a big seller, Keller said, along with the fried pickle appetizer.

Abby’s a charming breakfast nook ST. CHARLES – Families and the brunching bunch have a new breakfast boutique to tickle their fancy. Abby’s Breakfast and Lunch opened in May in the former Thai Zie Noodles and Bar location, nestled in an enclave behind the Filling Station Pub and Grill.

Lavender walls donning photographs of St. Charles from a bygone era, compliments of the St. Charles History Museum, and hanging stained-glass windows give the kid-friendly space a cozy calmness.

Affordably-priced, traditional American fare graces the menu, which is dotted with inventive items, such as Hawaiian Pineapple Eggs Benedict, Abby’s French Toast – made with rustic Tuscan bread and bacon jam – Waffles Biscuits and (Andouille sausage) Gravy, and Chicken Chorizo Enchiladas topped with fried eggs and homemade verde sauce. Abby’s serves breakfast all day (during open hours) and lunch – offering soups, salads and sandwiches – is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On weekends, Abby’s also offers homemade pie.

My dining companion and I waltzed into Abby’s on a sunny Friday morning for breakfast. We kept the Kona coffee ($2.50) coming and never saw the bottom of our mugs the entire morning.

Abby’s makes fresh, corned beef hash daily, so I opted for Abby’s Signature Corned Beef Hash and Sweet Potatoes ($9.99), topped with two fried eggs and a pancake on the side, while my dining companion settled on the Mexican Omelet ($9.99) with an English muffin on the side.

Slicing into one of the eggs, the creamy yolk slowly oozed into the tousled bed of diced onions, savory chunks of corned beef and sweet potatoes. After dressing up the fluffy pancake with soft butter and thick syrup, I dug in, leaving the plate without a trace of what had been there before.

The football-sized Mexican Omelet, which came with a side of crunchy hashbrowns, was cooked to perfection.

Chorizo, bell peppers, onions, queso chihuahua and jalapeños delivered a kick of spice and teamed nicely with the verde sauce.

To some, the option to order a hardy, American breakfast all day, every day is a pleasant one. And, for a long time, downtown St. Charles has been remiss in offering diners that option. Until now.

Fiora’s concert to feature all-star blues lineup

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Chicago based blues harmonica player Rob Stone learned his trade at the feet of such legendary musicians as Sam Lay, who was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the founding members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Lay, who some have called the greatest drummer of all time, will perform with Stone on Saturday, Sept. 19, at a free outdoor show at Fiora’s restaurant, located at 317 S. Third St. in downtown Geneva.

The concert, which will take place from 6 to 10 p.m., will also feature Chicago Blues Hall of Fame inductee Willie “The Touch” Hayes, Delmark recording artist and vocalist Katherine Davis and saxophonist Rodney Brown.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Stone about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: You’ve played extensively with Sam Lay. What has he taught you?

Rob Stone: We’ve been playing together for about 20 years, on and off. Probably the most

important thing I learned from him is to not try to sound like anybody else, to do my own thing and have the confidence to play my own music and not worry so much about what other people are doing.

Schelkopf: He commented on the fact that he has played with many harp players over the years and you turned out to be the best. That’s a great compliment.

Stone: I think he was being nice. Sam has played with the best of the best of the best, including the guys who I emulate and admire the most. I think he’s happy with the way I play.

I don’t know where I fall in some kind of ranking.

I certainly feel honored to have had the chance to play with Sam and learn from him, and I really value our relationship and the music we made together.

Schelkopf: I understand that you bought your first harmonica at age 18 after checking out a Charlie Musselwhite show. What was it about his show that made you want to pick up the harmonica?

Stone: I really hadn’t heard live Chicago blues harmonica before. It was something I had heard on recordings, but it’s

very different to hear live blues and recorded blues.

It was something cool and new and interesting to me, and I wanted to give it a shot.

Schelkopf: Were you trying to play in a certain style? Were you trying to emulate Charlie Musselwhite’s style?

Stone: Not so much. He had a style that I couldn’t approach at that point.

I started listening to all kinds of stuff and initially played along with anything that I could.

Eventually, I decided that the stuff I wanted to play was Chicago blues.

But if anyone in that group remembers a self-described nonathletic teen for which “even walking the mile in gym class was difficult,” you might stop by the finish line of the Fox Valley Marathon in downtown St. Charles on Sunday morning.

Hubbartt, 37, competes in these 26.2-mile odysseys now, and this weekend’s sixth annual running marks her first marathon in her old stomping – or was it sauntering? – grounds.

added incentive,” Hubbartt said. “Plus, I do want some hometown redemption after kind of being the lazier, not physically fit high school student.”

A marketing director in Milwaukee these days, Hubbartt, the former Jennifer Vestuto, became entrenched in that city’s running community before long.

She keeps good company in her husband, Andy, who is part of Sunday’s half-marathon field as he trains for the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 11.

The Hubbartts’ romance blossomed in college after the fellow St. Charles Class of 1996 members shared a friendship in high school. Andy Hubbartt played football for the Saints during his senior year.

“I never went to any of those games,” his wife recalls.

“I don’t know how that all went.”

Jennifer Hubbartt said she “just played violin, and that was fine.”

After high school, however, the need to internalize a more active lifestyle tugged at her heartstrings. Hubbartt had grown “a bit overweight” at Viterbo University in La

Crosse, Wis., and the combination of step aerobics in her room and limiting her overall food intake wasn’t a healthy one.

“That’s not really a successful, sustainable way to lose weight and keep it off,” she said.

About 12 or 13 years ago, after she had graduated from Illinois State – where she transferred to be closer to Andy, an Illinois alumnus – Hubbartt gravitated toward a triathlon ad she saw. She wasn’t a much better swimmer than the one who nonchalantly flapped around in the Norris Center pool during gym and did not own a bicycle, but there she was, training just the same.

As Hubbartt and her husband, an instructional designer for a health care company, endured early career moves and the birth of two daugh-

ters, now ages 9 and 5, triathlons and marathons suddenly emerged as a healthy, portable hobby.

“I kind of did a 180 as far as athletic ability and physical health and well being goes,” said Hubbartt, who has lived in Milwaukee with her family for almost nine years.

The Fox Valley Marathon offers a chance to see her hometown and the surrounding communities from a more advanced and athletic gaze.

“I still have those teenage feelings about it instead of having as much nostalgic feelings, really, so it’ll be nice to get that different perspective from the athletes side of me,” Hubbartt said. “So it should be fun.”

Running? Fun. Yup, that’s someone’s formerly disinterested gym pupil talking.

And advancing toward the finish line, too.

McDowell, area triathletes back home

CHICAGO – Geneva graduate Kevin McDowell is set to compete in today’s International Triathlon Union U23 World Triathlon Final in Grant Park.

In July, McDowell earned a silver medal in the Pan American Games triathlon in Toronto, continuing a resurgence after his March 2011 diagnosis with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 18 at the time.

Five athletes from the Tri-Cities -based Multisport Madness Triathlon Team will represent the U.S. at today’s sprint distance world championships, including Audrey Ernst of St.

Charles North and Alex Thomas of St. Charles East.

North product Morgan Lain, who competes in cross country at Bradley, also will be part of the field. The sprint race consists of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run.

“The excitement is huge,” Thomas said. “Getting the chance to compete against athletes from other countries.”

Kids marathon set for Saturday

ST. CHARLES – The 2015 CASA Kane County Fox Valley Kids Marathon is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of First and Illinois streets in downtown St. Charles.

Kids will complete the final 1.2 miles after keeping a mileage log during earlier runs over the summer in a bid to promote active lifestyles.

By JAMES HIGH editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland boys soccer team controlled the first half of play, but had to bear down to put away an aggressive DeKalb team, 3-1, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 match Wednesday.

The Knights came out and won the first half with aggressive offense and suffocating defense. Junior Angel Escontrias scored twice before halftime to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

“The first half was pretty to watch if you’re a Kaneland fan,” Knights coach Scott Parillo said. “We passed the ball, made our angled runs, our overlapping runs, and we communicated. It was very easy for me from a coaching perspective in the first half.”

The Barbs came out in the second half and put the Knights (3-4-2, 2-11 NI Big 12) on their heels. Sophomore

“Their energy showed that they wanted it,” DeKalb senior Joey Sauser said. “They had us on our back heels for most of the first half. But we responded in the second half a lot better than I thought we would. I thought we would have our heads down, but we kept them up and were able to give some energy. I think it’s a good learning experience for some of the younger guys on the team.”

Margie Palmrose-Mace satisfies her hobby like most others with side interests, seizing the moment whenever her work schedule allows.

But this isn’t beekeeping or stamp collecting we’re talking about. If she completes Sunday’s Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, which starts and ends in downtown St. Charles, Palmrose-Mace will have finished in marathon in 34 states.

She’s aiming for all 50.

“It’ll be kind of cool to be done,” said Palmrose-Mace, a 61-year-old computer analyst from Hillsboro, Oregon, “but it’ll also be like, ‘Wow, what do I do now?’ ” Palmrose-Mace favors smaller, locally-based marathons over mainstream ones, and she isn’t the only one with those preferences in this weekend’s field.

She isn’t the lone 50-state goal-setter, either. Palmrose-Mace, by the way, has her most vacancies in the New England states.

Competing in what she called “grassroots” events has enabled Palmrose-Mace to “take running down to that elemental level that it used to be,” an experience that fuels her optimism and energy to continue her pursuit.

A friend who lives in Aurora directed Palmrose-Mace to the Fox Valley race, lauding its reputation for keeping a small field while showering runners with a big-race feel and amenities.

“I thought, ‘Well, it sounds like a good one to do, then, as opposed to, say, the Chicago Marathon, something big and mostly dealing with crowds’,” she said. “Fox Valley will be a smaller race but still very scenic, and you run along the river.”

Touch ’em all: The 2015 season marked my seventh year of covering Kane County Cougars baseball for the Chronicle.

In an interesting twist, I encountered a distant cousin of the young man who indirectly ended my own baseball playing career after last week’s finale at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Peoria Chiefs closer Kyle Grana, a native of Wildwood, Mo., didn’t look at me too puzzlingly when I asked if he was of any relation to St. Louisan Steve Grana, whose dad coached an in-house travel team for which I played in the summer entering ninth grade.

Why should I have worried? I figured the surname wasn’t as common as “Smith” or “Jones.”

The narrative at the time would have told you I was the victim of nepotism. Steve Grana, also the coach’s son, played third base, which put me at a disadvantage since that’s where I played, too.

Truth was, Steve was good; he went on to play high school ball, among two other sports, and remains athletic, starting a CrossFit gym in the western St. Louis suburbs three years ago.

Meantime, yours truly allowed his lone defensive chance in his lone inning at the hot corner to pass through his wickets. Plus, that was an odd-numbered year, which means my hitting took a summer off.

At any rate, the way baseball constantly presents connections never fails.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re throwing fastballs, writing about them or simply trying to catch up.

“This conference is always solid,” Jennison said. “Even when you hear teams are having down years, they’re always going to be competitive. Because there’s so many local rivalries, I don’t think there’s any game that makes sense on paper. Each time out is going to be a battle, and if you want to win this conference, consistent, well-played soccer is how it will be done.”

Substitute teacher inspires Logan

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois senior cornerback Paris Logan is only preparing for top-ranked Ohio State this week because of a substitute teacher.

It was because of the suggestion to play football toward the end of his sophomore season by substitute teacher Michael Lockett that Logan picked up the game – resulting in him becoming a standout cornerback for the Huskies as they play at Ohio State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on ABC. “I wasn’t used to people outside of my family looking out for me and taking care of me,” said Logan, who attended Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri, and hadn’t played football before.

“He was always looking out for me. It was like a mentor or a big brother. It was something that I needed at that point in my life.”

When Lockett mentioned football to the sophomore Logan, he brushed it off – thinking he was too small to play at 140 pounds. Eventually, Lockett talked him into it and he went to practice – only to not show up the following day.

That didn’t suit Lockett, who would end up driving Logan to practice for weeks before the teenager was hooked on the game.

“A couple of times I had to chase him around and grab him to get him to go,” said Lockett, who is now the head football coach for Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas. “It was a struggle at first.”

For Logan, the game turned into a chance to get away from the struggles he was dealing with.

“Ever since that day, he made sure I went to practice,” Logan said. “I want to say for two weeks, he made sure I was there every day and

then I fell in love in the game.

I think he saw that I needed a release from what I was going through during that time.

He saw something in me and made sure I continued to play football.”

In the summer, Lockett told Logan that he could be a talented player if he was willing to put in the work. He’d come get Logan so that he could work out, and he would give him quizzes to help him learn the game of football.

Two years later, Lockett’s idea about Logan came true.

While he was an assistant coach at Wisconsin, Dave Doeren wanted to recruit Logan but because of grades, he couldn’t get an offer. When Doeren got the job at Northern Illinois for the 2011 season, he eventually called Logan to offer him a full-ride – not without its complications.

“I actually missed the first call,” Logan laughed. “My head coach called me and went, ‘What are you doing?’

And I told him I just woke up.”

In fact, the flight to DeKalb via Chicago was the first time the teenager Logan had been on an airplane.

“I was nervous,” he laughed. “I was bugging. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,” – looking around at people. I was going to pass out. I was like, ‘I’m going to die up here.’ The plane shaking and everything. I actually got lost in O’Hare walking around.”

Since then, it’s been much smoother for Logan at Northern Illinois. He’s played in every game since 2012 and is coming off a season in which he was named first team all-Mid-American Conference – coming away with 77 tackles and three interceptions as one of the leaders of the Huskies’ defense. Now he’s getting ready for a chance to make history in Ohio Stadium on Saturday.

“It’s been a crazy, crazy ride,” he said.

Either way, it suggests players need to peak somewhere between their second and fourth seasons.

On Wednesday, Vic Fangio offered an interesting perspective on the development of young players when he was asked about Arizona receiver John Brown.

“Last year was his process of developing and playing more and more as the season wore on,” Fangio said. “Now you go through a second offseason and a second training camp, I think that’s where you see guys flourish.”

If that’s the case, it’s reasonable to assume that Kyle Long, Jonathan Bostic, Marquess Wilson and the recently acquired Patrick Omameh – the only third-year players on the roster – should be pretty close to finished products or at least very near their ceilings.

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – No one is going to confuse Carson Palmer for Aaron Rodgers, but as far as Jared Allen is concerned, the only big difference between the two is pretty simple.

“Obviously, if his name’s Carson Palmer, he’s not Aaron Rodgers, so by birth, they’re different,” Allen quipped following Wednesday’s practice.

The Bears’ defense knows there is no letting up in prepping for Palmer, who completed 19-of-32 passes for 307 yards, there touchdowns and no interceptions in a Week 1 win over the Saints.

“Just watching the film, Carson looks really good right now. He’s moving better than I’ve seen him move in the last few years,” Allen said. “Obvi-

ously, another guy that knows where the ball needs to go, high intelligence, good accuracy, ball out quick. … Aaron’s probably a little more mobile as far as extending plays and making plays on the run or in the pocket. Still, I watched some of the game against the Saints, he wasn’t looking like a 35-yearold man or however old he is.”

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Palmer has “always been one of the best quarterbacks in the league.” Fangio coached against him when Palmer was in Arizona and Cincinnati.

“He’s a great passer, throws a great deep ball, which is something Bruce [Arians] really likes,” Fangio said. “He’s got good command of their offense. … He’s a complete quarterback always has been.”

“Cornelius is a good player, kind of rare traits for a defensive lineman,” Rodgers said.

Lamin Barrow along with the rookies are the players we really should be focused on this season.

Alshon Jeffery and Shea McClellin are the only fourthyear players on the roster.

Like Long, Jeffery has established himself as a core player, but the numbers suggest McClellin is quite a longshot at this point.

It seems likely we’ll have to wait until next year on Kevin White. If there are to be better times ahead, the arrival of the good times will be dictated by, and our attention should be focused, win or lose, on the progress of kids like Bostic,

Wilson, Fuller, Ferguson, Sutton, Jones, Mitchell, Eddie Goldman and Jeremy Langford in particular, and their abilities to become difference makers.

If they can’t, things are likely to get worse before they get better.

While we certainly hope they win more than they lose, how many games this team can win or keep close is, for the most part, irrelevant.

“Customers fear that their rates will soar, or worse, the insurance company will cancel their policy if they report too many accidents in one year,” he says. “In my years of helping

customers, I’ve only once heard of a customer getting dropped from his insurance company.”

Just adding a teen, or any additional driver, to a parent’s existing insurance policy will raise the premium. However, DMV. org suggest ways to minimize costs: “Many auto insurance companies offer ‘good student discounts’ for teen drivers who earn a certain grade point average in school, which is usually a B or higher average.”

Other savings ideas include enrolling the teen in additional driving training courses, agreeing to a higher insurance deductible (which usually lowers rates), and avoiding “newer, flashier cars” which are traditionally more expensive to insure.

Since many insurance companies offer “good driver discounts,” teens are encouraged to understand one more reason to drive safely: less expensive car insurance rates in the future, when they may be paying the bill.

It seems as if the Bears exceed almost all expectations Sunday against the Packers.

Admit it, folks, they were a lot better than anyone believed them to be, and it has raised hopes throughout the city this week that this team is better than we thought it was.

But realistically, is that where our focus should be right now?

No, it’s not.

I had these guys pegged at 6-10, but even if they win seven, eight or nine games, it will of course make for a few more enjoyable Sundays.

But what is it worth in the grand scheme of things?

At the end of the day, these Bears most likely aren’t going to the playoffs, certainly aren’t going to the Super Bowl and this team does need to be rebuilt.

What we really should be focused on today, tomorrow and throughout this season is how many of the rookies, first-, second- and third-year

players have a chance to develop and become core players and contributors to a team that can contend for the title.

Many of the most important core players on this team are veterans such as Matt Forte, Jermon Bushrod, Will Montgomery, Jeremiah Ratliff, Jared Allen, Antrel Rolle and Alan Ball who are either finishing or past their primes and unlikely to be here in two or three years when this team might be ready.

Middle-aged veterans such as Martellus Bennett, Matt Slauson, Pernell McPhee, Lamarr Houston and Willie Young offer a little more promise, but it’s unlikely all of them will still be in their primes in two or three years.

And how much better are they likely to get than they are today?

What are youth and middle age in the NFL today?

The NFL Players Association loves to promote the idea of the average career of an NFL player being 3.3 years, but Roger Goodell disagrees.

They were in a box from a department store marked “fine jewelry.” She loved them and became emotional in expressing her gratitude. I kept my mouth shut when she said it, but now I understand why she was so excited when she first saw them. She cherishes the earrings and has told me numerous times she will never take them off.

Surprising number of conditions cause B12 deficiency Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column I began to answer a reader’s question about the different causes of vitamin B12 deficiency, and whether to treat them with shots or pills. Today, we continue a discussion of the many conditions that can interfere with the ability of the small intestine (the part called the ileum) to absorb vitamin B12 from the foods you eat.

As we get older, some people have more trouble absorbing the vitamin B12 in their food during digestion. Vitamin B12 in food is like leaves on a tree: It needs to be shaken loose. Stomach acid (and another stomach chemical called pepsin) are what shake vitamin B12 loose from food, allowing it to be absorbed by the ileum.

I’m one of those folks who don’t absorb much of the vitamin B12 in food. Even though I eat plenty of B12-rich foods, I also need to take B12 pills. That fixes the problem.

Most people with this condition are like me: Vitamin B12 pills are enough, and we don’t need shots.

And, sometimes, just increasing the B12-rich foods in your diet is enough – you don’t even need pills.

B12 is found naturally only in animal products. Examples include meat, fish, poultry, eggs

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff and milk. Many cereals are fortified with the synthetic form of the vitamin.

If you are deficient because you are not getting enough B12 in your diet, or because of aging, pills may not always be enough. If your blood levels of B12 are very low, your doctor may prescribe vitamin B12 shots for a while. It’s easier to “fill your tank” with shots.

Then, once your blood levels are normal, you can switch to pills.

There are other ailments in which not enough of the vitamin B12 in the diet is absorbed by the gut. There are rare conditions (besides pernicious anemia) that are inherited. Conditions that reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach can do it. Examples are chronic gastritis, or surgical removal of part of the stomach to treat an ulcer.

Long-term use of powerful acid-suppressing pills – such as omeprazole (Prilosec) or cimetidine (Tagamet) – can cause B12 deficiency. So, can the commonly

prescribed medicine for diabetes, metformin (Glucophage). When metformin is the culprit, adding a calcium supplement can fix the problem.

Other diseases of the ileum besides Crohn’s disease (which we discussed in yesterday’s column) can cause low B12 levels. Examples are infections of the ileum, such as by tuberculosis or possibly

by HIV, or cancer of the ileum (lymphoma).

A really weird cause of vitamin B12 deficiency is a fish tapeworm infection. In developing nations where people eat raw fish, it is not uncommon. The youngest worms (larvae) inside the fish get swallowed. Then they start growing inside a person’s intestine. These worms like vitamin B12, and they “steal” it before our ileum can absorb it.

I’ll bet you never imagined there could be so many different causes of a vitamin deficiency.

Fortunately, vitamin B12 deficiency usually is easy to treat.

Teen wants to be taller to participate in athletics Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and the second-shortest guy in my P.E. class. How much longer will I continue to grow, and is there any kind of diet or exercise that will help me grow? I don’t want to be taller just to be taller. I really want to be taller because I love athletics and think I’d have a better chance of making a team if I were taller. – Todd, Evansville, Indiana Dear Todd: The majority of males continue to grow until around their 18th birthday, and some keep growing another year after that. For the most part, height is determined genetically. Simply put, tall parents have taller children than short parents.

But don’t let your height stop you from competing in athletics. Even the game of basketball has room for the smaller player and has created a position for him or her.

It’s called point guard and it is the equivalent of a quarterback on a football team – not too shabby.

Dr. Wallace: I’m thrilled that you constantly remind your teen readers of the evils of alcohol.

I’m not a teen, but I hope you will print my letter. It could encourage some of your readers to totally eliminate alcohol from their lives.

When I was 13, my father insisted that I drink one beer a day “just to be sociable.”

By the time I was 17, I was drinking any type of alcohol I could lay my hands on. By age 25, I was a total

At age 50, I finally got fed up with alcohol and with the help of the almighty I stopped drinking. Unfortunately, my husband and sons continued their destructive habits.

I am now a 62-yearold, alcohol-free widow. My alcoholic husband has died and, sadly, my five sons continue to abuse alcohol. Because of alcohol, three have been divorced and one is legally separated from his wife.

As you can see, Dr. Wallace, I have lived a very painful life. I know that teens are at an experimental stage, but I hope and pray they have the wisdom to stay away from alcohol. I wish someone had warned me 50 long years ago. – Grandma, Sulphur, Louisiana Dear Grandma: You were not only not warned of the dangers of alcohol, you were pushed into its so-called “enjoyment.”

You really didn’t stand a chance. My heart goes out to you.

He needs only the diamond ace in the dummy to have 10 top tricks; or, if partner has another ace, declarer can enter the dummy and lead a diamond toward his king, through the opening bidder; a slam is unlikely opposite a passed partner (although I would make the same bid even if partner had not had a chance to act); and this intervention might inconvenience responder, who does not require much to bid after a one-spade overcall, but needs a good hand at the five-level.

Typically, a low lead from length guarantees at least one honor in that suit. The exception is when leading partner’s unsupported suit. Then, giving length information is more important than strength information.

Here, West should lead the club two – low from length.

East wins with his nine and cashes the club ace, seeing his partner go up the line. Knowing that South is now out of clubs, East shifts to the diamond three, giving the defenders the first four tricks.

Note that if West had led the club seven, top of nothing, East would have assumed it was from a doubleton and tried to cash a third club trick. Then, though, South would have collected an overtrick, not an undertrick.
