County official: New Animal Control leader ‘worth the search’

“I’m honored to be here,” Youngsteadt told the committee. “Thank you all for being so accepting and welcoming.”

Youngsteadt, who came from Chicago Animal Care and Control and cited a life-

long interest in animals, said he is looking forward to what he can do in the Kane County agency, which is overseen by the health department.

“Here, the foundation’s poured,” he said. “They just need to build up.”

Youngsteadt’s long-term vision includes building sustainable programs – such as those for adoptions, transfers and volunteers – that he said can last for generations.

“They sky’s the limit here,” he said.

He has begun talking with Animal Control staff about

what has and hasn’t worked well at the agency, as well as their ideas for it, he said. He said he intends to incorporate their ideas into his long-range plan.

“If we’re not a team it’s not going to work,” Youngsteadt said.

He understands that the staff might be nervous, as there is a “mountain” before them, he said. But, he said, progress will be made gradually.

“We’re not crossing that mountain tomorrow,” he said.

Batavia eyeing TIF for West Town area

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City officials are exploring the idea of creating a tax increment financing district to improve the West Town area.

City officials recently held a meeting to hear from residents and property owners in the city’s West Town area on what their vision is for the neighborhood, and to present the city’s possible plans for the area.

The West Town area is centered at the intersection of Main Street and Mallory Avenue, and extends about two blocks north and south.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston told aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting a preliminary feasibility study shows the area likely could qualify for a conservation area TIF designation.

Under that designation, at least 50 percent of the area’s buildings must be at least 35 years old.

“Records indicate this condition can be proved,”

Aiston told aldermen.

In addition, at least three other factors must exist within the area, including deterioration, presence of buildings below minimum code standards and lack of community planning.

Aldermen recommended staff do a formal and complete feasibility study for the proposed West Town conservation area TIF. Aiston would perform the feasibility study.

The area is comprised of both industries still in operation and abandoned build-

ings, such as a vacant gas station. Master Cast, which supplies permanent mold aluminum castings, is at the southeast corner of Mallory Avenue and First Street. The building was heavily damaged in a March 5 fire and is set to be demolished.

The West Town area also is comprised of homes and The Elms restaurant. The city’s comprehensive plan calls for a mix of uses in the area, including higher density, single-family uses, as well as industrial uses, city officials said.

SOLVING THE CRIME Fox Valley Career Center course teaches students to ‘solve’ crimes

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Omar Aguilar crouched down on the floor, studying a collection of blood spatters.

The more rounded ones were dropped from 60 centimeters, and the droplets with erratic edges were dropped from 70 centimeters.

“We looked at blood spatter found at our crime scene, and we’re trying to see from what height they were dropped,” said Aguilar, 17, a senior at Kaneland High School and one of 24 students in the biomedical sciences class at Fox Valley Career Center. “It’s based on crime scene factors.”

He marked a sheet with his calculations as other students studied their own blood spatter evidence, which they created using “zombie” blood dropped from eyedroppers from different heights.

Nearby, crime scene tape sectioned off a corner of the classroom where a mannequin represents the deceased person that forms the basis for their study.

This new four-year class, made possible by a $101,339 grant from the John C. Dunham Fund, covers principles of biomedical sciences, human body systems, medical interventions and biomedical innovation.

The course comes from Project Lead the Way, a nonprofit organization that partners with schools for science, technology, engineering and math curriculum that is hands-on real-world problem solving.

The biomedical science instructor, Janelle McCornack, explained unlike in other lab courses, in which students follow a “cookbook” to achieve a correct answer, here students create their own labs using science to find correct answers by trial and error.

One thing they all learn quickly, however: Crime scene work is painstaking, tedious and incredibly detailed – not anything like it is portrayed on various TV crime shows.

Students don’t even know whether there was a crime committed, McCornack said.

All they have is a deceased person, blood spatter and other clues. By the end of the course, they must figure out whether the death occurred by accident or if she was killed.

Details of the class’s death scene cannot be made public, as it would compromise work to be done by the next students who take the course, she said.

McCornack, a former paramedic firefighter for Sugar Grove for 10 years, said she became an EMT teacher for Fox Valley Career Center after she got pregnant. The Dunham grant also paid for her training so she could teach the biomedical sciences

“This is evidence-based,” McCornack said. “They can’t say, ‘In my opinion’ or ‘I have a gut feeling.’ They have to build the case. ... They cannot help but learn by doing the labs and projects.”

Fox Valley Career Center Director Rick Burchell said students take career classes to find what they want to do – as much as to discover what they don’t want to do.

at Geneva High School, said she took the biomedical sciences class because she has a passion for science, not necessarily crime scene science.

“I love to learn how the natural world works, using scientific principles,” Stellick said.

Natalie Mills, 15, a sophomore from Elburn, said she also wants to work in the medical field, and taking this class was a good way to experience forensics.

“This will help me make up my mind which way I want to go,” Mills said.

Burchell said the course teaches critical thinking skills students can use even if they don’t stay in the biomedical field.

Katie Huber, 15, a sophomore from Elburn, agreed that one of the great values of the course is nobody tells the students the answers.

“We have to find that out on our own,” Huber said.

SUGAR GROVE – Students of all ages are welcome Thursday to the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual Scholarship Fair.

The fair will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sugar Grove Township Community Building, 141 S. Main St. in Sugar Grove. The fair will feature up to 25 different groups at the fair, including colleges and organizations with private scholarships, said Sally McClellan, one of the event’s organizers. High school seniors usually attend

the fair, but there are scholarships available for adults continuing their education, as well, she said.

“We try to get a broad range of scholarships, so there will be something for everyone to be interested in,” McClellan said.

The groups include University of Illinois Extension, the U.S. Air Force, the National Guard and the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Attendees will receive pens and paper for taking notes and a bag for collecting handouts, McClellan said.

Fire chief seeks support in fighting referendum Callaghan: Elburn district could lose 10 percent of its land, 20 percent of its value

A group of voters this summer petitioned to disconnect from the Elburn district and add territory to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

The territory is bound

by LaFox Road to the east, Anderson Road to the west, Campton Hills Road to the south and Empire Road to the north, although there also is some land included north of Silver Glen Road.

“I am firmly in belief that the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District should maintain its area.”

The question will be asked on the ballot for the Nov. 4 election.

Callaghan, speaking during the public comment portion of Elburn’s Village Board meeting, asked trustees to raise awareness of the issue, through letters to the editor, for example.

Bob Britz, the Elburn fire district’s attorney and also Elburn’s village attorney, said losing the territory would be “a huge hit” to the district.

Callaghan said the Elburn department wants to hold onto the territory.

“We are actively fighting it,” Callaghan said of the disconnection attempt.

The question asks voters in the affected area whether they would be for or against the transfer from the Elburn district to the Fox River and Countryside district and assume any debt of the district they would join.

The petition went before Kane County Circuit Judge David Akemann, who found last month that the conditions for transfer and disconnection would be met.

Britz said there could be questions about how the Elburn district would be affected by such a referendum.

For instance, he said, perhaps the Elburn district might need to make layoffs.

Also, he mentioned that the district has been prudent, pointing out the district sought no public funds for a new station that is being built on Route 38 in Elburn.

Britz said the Elburn department has superior equipment.

Reached on Tuesday for a response, Jim Gaffney, the board president of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District, said the judge’s decision established the Fox River district was capable of providing service to the residents involved in the referendum.

He said as far as determining which fire district is better, “I don’t think that is a judgment call that I would make.”

He said the response time to some of the areas would be faster through the Fox River district.

“They run an equal department to us, and vice versa,” Gaffney said.

Bill Grabarek, an Elburn Village Board member, said he would like to see the issue on the agenda for the next Village Board meeting.

10 Batavia City Council votes to support cultivation center

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Batavia City Council’s meeting on Monday unanimously voted to support an application for a proposed medical marijuana cultivation center in an industrial area on Paramount Parkway. As a result, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke is sending a letter of support to the The Illinois Department of Agriculture, which is charged with reviewing applications for marijuana cultivation centers and dispensing centers. The letter expresses his support for PharMar Farms’ planned cultivation center at 1375 Paramount Parkway in Batavia.

“We believe that the presence of the cannabis cultivation center will have no detrimental impact upon our community,” Schielke states in the letter. “In fact, it appears that the operating plans for the facility, implementing quality controls based on the highest known industry standards for growing and processing consumables, will be a leader in this field.”

Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath has said no one else has approached the city for a letter of support.

The state’s Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act became law Jan. 1. Patients with a variety of illnesses could apply for medical marijuana by next spring. Debilitating conditions recognized by the state’s medical marijuana law include cancer, glaucoma, Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Registered patients and designated caregivers will be regulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health. According to the department’s website, qualifying patients may possess up to 2.5 ounces of medical cannabis in a 14-day period from an authorized medical cannabis dispensary. Patients under the age of 18 are not qualified for the program.

Batavia City Council accepting applications to fill vacancy

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The city is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Batavia City Council after the recent resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks.

In August, Sparks announced he was resigning from the City Council because he was moving to North Aurora. Sparks first was elected to the City Council in 2005.

Sparks’ term expires in April. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and the City Council will appoint someone to fill the

seat until April. At Monday’s City Council meeting, Schielke said he has received inquiries from five people who expressed interest in the position. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Oct. 1.

The City Council is comprised of 14 aldermen, with two representing each of the seven wards in the city. A map of the city’s wards is at the city’s website, www.cityofbatavia.net.

Aldermen plan to interview the applicants during a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting Oct. 7, and make an appointment at the Oct. 20 City Council meeting.

During Monday’s meeting, Schielke also presented a plaque to Sparks honoring him for his nine years on the City Council.

“He always looked out for his constituents,” Schielke said, in presenting Sparks with the plaque.

Along with being on the City Council, Sparks also is known in the community for his lavish Christmas displays at his home on Bluestem Lane in Batavia.

The display also served as a way to raise donations for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

WAUBONSEE VOICE Joy Sanders That means that I, along with the department’s four admissions advisers, have the privilege of working with students from each of the high schools and vocational centers in our district. These students are looking at colleges and preparing for the next chapter of their educational story, and we often get to be a part of that exploration process.

In meeting with these students, we hear about their successes and struggles, aspirations and accomplishments. Not surprisingly, we also see twinges of anxiety, confusion or fear.

We hope to ease those emotions by educating students on how to choose a college that best fits their goals and needs. Becoming familiar with the different

types of colleges – such as community colleges, technical or vocational schools, and public and private four-year colleges – is the first step to the right fit.

Knowing if a school offers the major you are interested in is extremely important.

How long does it usually take students to finish their program? How much does it cost to attend, and are there scholarships or financial aid available?

While this is good information to have, the best way to determine if a school is the right fit is to visit campus.

Get a tour (from a student ambassador, if possible). See everything from the size and setup of a typical classroom, the student life office, admissions and support services, to the dorms, dining halls and athletic facilities. Ask your tour guide why they chose the college, what they like most and least, the best places to meet people and what there is to do on campus

outside of class.

For high school juniors and seniors especially, college is just around the corner, so it’s a great time to start looking at your options.

As a kid, going school-supply shopping was always something I looked forward to. Picking out a new backpack and lunchbox made me a happy girl. The night before school started, I was a ball of nervous, excited energy. The start of a new school year meant new adventures and one year closer to being “all grown up.”

Even though I’m now all grown up, I still get excited about the start of a new school year; only now, my excitement comes from seeing brand new students walk through the doors of Waubonsee Community College, starting their college journey. It comes from catching up with returning students, finding out how their summers went and how their new semester is going.

STC preps for Fox Valley Marathon KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Several roadways in St. Charles will be affected by the Fox Valley Marathon, St. Charles police announced Monday in a news release.

The marathon will be from 7 a.m until about 2 p.m. Sunday and will start on First Street near Illinois Street in St. Charles. First Street between Illinois and Indiana streets will be closed beginning at 5 a.m.

Saturday for set up. The run continues south to Aurora before returning to the finish line back in St. Charles on the Illinois Street bridge. The Prairie Street and Illinois Street bridges will be closed during the event, according to the release.

The first part of the marathon goes from First Street in St. Charles and turns onto Geneva Road (Route 31), which will be reduced to one lane as the runners continue south to

Geneva city limits. The course will cross State Street (Route 38) in Geneva.

About an hour after the marathon begins, police officers and emergency management personnel will be in place along Riverside Avenue (Route 25) to assist with traffic direction for the return phase of the run, which will be held mostly on the eastern portion of the Fox River Trail. Traffic on Riverside Avenue will be reduced to one lane, as well. Vehicles that need to cross the Fox River should use the Main Street bridge or the Red Gate bridge.

The Prairie Street Bridge on Saturday will be temporarily closed at the 3 p.m. start of the CASA Kane County Fox Valley Kids Marathon. The closure is expected to be less than 30 minutes, according to the release.

St. Charles police urge motorists to watch for runners, spectators and emergency responders assisting with the event.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said his city is not interested in being part of Geneva officials’ advocacy of Route 31 improvements that would reduce four lanes to two with center turn lanes and bike lanes on the sides.

Geneva officials said this week that a Batavia staff member participated in a discussion with the Illinois Department of Transportation to try to advance this plan, which would extend from Elizabeth Place to the north entrance of Fabyan Forest Preserve.

“The short answer from Batavia is that we are not interested at this time,” Schielke said. “And we would wait a couple years from the Geneva experience before we would talk about it. ... I’m just thinking we need more road capacity not less.”

Geneva 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian, in whose ward this stretch of Route 31 is located, said state transportation officials did not support considering the plan for Bat-

avia’s portion of Route 31 because traffic north of Fabyan is too heavy.

Geneva aldermen this week approved setting aside $208,000 from the city’s capital budget to have the cash available if the state agreed to it.

If the state does not agree the project should move forward, aldermen would re-allocate the money back to the Fourth Street parking lot improvements, officials said.

Simonian said he contacted 267 residents on 16 streets near Route 31 and estimated about 70 percent were in favor.

“This is about calming traffic and improving aesthetics,” Geneva 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra said. “And a goal in 2005 to get a bike lane in along that corridor.”

Currently, bicyclists go through nearby homeowners’ driveways to get to the river, he said.

Mayor Kevin Burns said if state transportation officials decide this would be a good project to fund, the city would hold hearings to hear input from residents.

Short on firepower THE WASHINGTON POST In launching two previous wars in Iraq, the United States assembled formidable coalitions of dozens of countries.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria and Oman were among the Arab states that deployed substantial ground forces during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Though derided by some as a “unilateral” U.S. action, the 2003 invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq was supported by troops from 39 countries, nine of which deployed more than 1,000 soldiers.

By those standards, the results thus far of the Obama administration’s efforts to marshal an alliance to fight the self-described Islamic State look meager. In Paris on Monday, two dozen governments pledged to help fight the extremists “by any means necessary, including military assistance.” But only a handful – not yet including Britain – have so far agreed to participate in air combat missions in Iraq, and none has yet signed on to support prospective U.S. air strikes in Syria. Nor is any sending combat troops.

The attenuated support reflects, in part, the complicated politics of the fight against the Islamic State, which controls a New England-size swath of territory across Iraq and Syria and commands tens of thousands of militants. Neighbors such as Turkey and Jordan are reluctant to openly join the fight, for fear of becoming targets of the terrorists. Sunni rulers are loath to fight on the same side as the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad or Iran – which, for its part, loudly declared Monday that it had rejected a U.S. cooperation proposal.

In large part, however, the restraint has been fostered by President Obama himself. As The Post’s Rajiv Chandrasekaran reported, Mr. Obama rejected the recommendation of his top military commanders that U.S. Special Operations forces be deployed to assist Iraqi army units in fighting the rebels, and Secretary of State John Kerry said the administration has turned aside troop offers by other nations. “There are some who have offered to do so, but we are not looking for that, at this moment anyway,” he told CBS News’ Bob Schieffer.

Mr. Kerry said Monday that defeating the Islamic State will depend, in part, on non-combat initiatives, such as discrediting its ideology, stopping the flow of jihadist volunteers and providing political and material support to the new Iraq government. That’s certainly true, and Saudi Arabia’s commitment to help train thousands of fighters for the Free Syrian Army is important.

Still, it’s not clear that the administration’s strategy of defeating the Islamic State solely with Iraqi and rebel Syrian forces is workable. The Iraqi army will require extensive reorganization and retraining, backed by major political reforms in Baghdad, before it will be able to field units capable of recapturing cities such as Fallujah and Mosul. And it looks strong compared with the Free Syrian Army, which until recently appeared in danger of being crushed between the Assad regime and the Islamic State.

Mr. Obama is right to seek the empowerment of the Iraqi and Syrian forces and to fashion a broad agenda for a regional alliance. But in the end the Islamic State will have to be defeated on the battlefield. In that respect, the alliance the administration is constructing looks underpowered.

Ms. Fuchs, I am sure uncertain of your business background, but, simply put, Business 101, you cannot spend more than what you take in. You also cannot continue to bleed the taxpayers to death with your continuous spending. I say

I urge all taxpayers to show up at future meetings to have board members look us in the face and try to justify the insatiable spending.

Geneva reigns in high-powered matchup

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Geneva girls volleyball team that intends to play in multiple much-hyped, high-pressure matches come the postseason gave an early indication it has a team capable of rising to the occasion.

Playing Upstate Eight Conference River rival St. Charles North in a crucial conference match, Geneva distanced itself from a poor start and pulled away from the North Stars on Tuesday for a 21-25, 25-13, 25-14 victory.

In a match with multiple Division I recruits on both sides of the net and an atmosphere befitting the skill on display, the Vikings kept their cool and their perfect record, now 12-0 overall on the season.

“The crowd was fantastic, our bench had energy, our floor had energy,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “I love playing in these types of environments, and I know the kids do.”

The Vikings needed three games in consecutive road victories, having gone to the wire last week at DeKalb.

Senior right-side hitter Kyley Thompson said the Vikings have enjoyed being pushed lately by opponents capable of giving Geneva trouble. North certainly fits the description.

“It’s so fun,” Thompson said. “It was so fun. It’s so great to play against people your own level. It just was a really fun, good competition, and

North (9-3, 2-1 UEC River) dominated much of Game 1, ballooning its lead to 16-7 after a kill by Jaclyn Taylor. But serving strings by Geneva’s Mikayla Lanasa and Kelsey Wicinski drew the Vikings within 22-20, and although North closed the game with a Daley Krage kill, the Vikings looked more like themselves.

“Volleyball’s a game of momentum,” Seitelman said. “So even though we didn’t get the end result that we wanted at the end of the first set, I think the tenacity that they showed and kind of that grit to fight back and make the first set more competitive kind of led us into our second set, which started out pretty well for us.”

Quite the understatement.

won 10 of the first 11 points in the second set, and North never fully recovered in either the second or third sets.

North Stars coach Lindsey Hawkins loved her team’s execution in the early stages of the match, but North couldn’t locate a second wind once the match began to slip.

“Obviously set two, we basically started giving them free balls from the service

line, and they really were able to take us out of system, which is a struggle for our setters,” Hawkins said. “When our setters can’t get the ball on the net or mix up the offense, then it’s a lot easier to play defense.

We just stopped doing what the gameplan was and what you should always do no matter who you’re facing, which is serve aggressively and pass the ball.”

On the few attacking swings North did muster, Geneva blocking stalwarts Maddie Courter and Ally Mullen often prevented the North Stars from cleanly cashing in.

Taylor (seven kills, six assists), Claire Anderson (six kills), Taryn Dal Degan (11 assists) and Frankie Neari (six digs) were among North’s leaders.

For Geneva, not only did Loberg lead the way with 12 kills but she also was credited with a match-high 17 digs. The Wisconsin recruit’s big night came despite a start that mirrored her team’s.

“I personally was getting frustrated because I got blocked the first three hits of mine,” Loberg said. “I was getting frustrated, but I knew once I got one point, I would hopefully shake it off and be fine. We picked each other up which was really helpful.”

Fellow sophomore Ally Barrett added eight kills, while Lanasa (21 assists) and Wicinski (15 digs) also keyed the resurgence for Geneva, which ousted North in a Class 4A sectional final last season.

Navigato decides on Buffalo, Hurley

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Visits to Geneva basketball open gym sessions backto-back weeks spoke volumes about how seriously the Buffalo coaching staff prioritized Geneva senior Nate Navigato.

On Tuesday evening, after the second drop-in, Navigato removed all doubt that the feeling was mutual, offering Buffalo men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley his verbal commitment.

“I just knew how much they wanted me and I felt really secure with them, like they’d have my back no matter what,” Navigato said. “So I felt like I owed him, I really loved it there and I knew it was the right place for me.”

An iconic former point guard at Duke during the early 1990s, Hurley led the Blue Devils to three Final Four trips, sharing the spotlight

with stars such as Christian Laettner and Grant Hill. In his first season at Buffalo last year, Hurley guided the Bulls to the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division championship.

Navigato, a 6-foot-7, inside/ outside threat, is the reigning Kane County Chronicle Boys Basketball Player of the Year. “We had a great visit at Buffalo [over Labor Day weekend],” said Dan Navigato, Nate’s father. “All the coaching staff, Nate liked. The players, we watched them scrimmage and we saw just how unselfish the team played. They always make that extra pass. You can tell they’re taking after their head coach and the way he played, and Nate just loved seeing that, how unselfish the players were.”

Dan Navigato said Nate nixed potential visits to Lehigh and Toledo, the other finalists during a recruitment that landed Navigato numerous Division I scholarship offers, including from in-state programs Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Illinois-Chicago.

Navigato said Hurley has some compelling stories from his playing days, culminating in the NBA. “Obviously I didn’t get to see him play, but definitely watched a lot of videos of him,” Navigato said. “It’s going to be a blessing to be coached by someone like that.”

While upstate New York is far from home, Navigato said Buffalo’s presence in the MAC – with several closer schools part of the conference – should make for some navigable road trips for his family, which includes triplet brothers who are sophomores in Geneva’s program.

Visits are planned for Ferris State University, Hillsdale College and Grace College, and he’d like to decide before the season, saying he doesn’t want “to be like a fifth option” for a bigger school that might eventually show interest.

Wherever Ruggles winds up for college will be his third team in three years after he makes his debut at Wheaton Warrenville South, a school about four times larger than he was accustomed to.

“It’s been fun,” Ruggles said of the adjustment. “It’s different. I miss a lot of kids at Wheaton Academy but I also have made a lot of new friends and reconnected with old ones.

It’s a different environment, but it is a lot of fun.”

The effort appeared far more urgent than senior Josh Vilchuck described.

“Just stay with your man.

Don’t let him go. Don’t dive in,” Vilchuck said. “Basics of soccer.”

Batavia blanked the defending Upstate Eight Conference River Division champions, 1-0, behind that steady approach, plus the heroics of goalkeeper Kevin Fiddelke and midfielder Ian Larson, both seniors.

As coach Mark Gianfrancesco corralled the Bulldogs (7-1-1, 3-0 UEC River) for a postgame chat, he reminded them more tests were ahead.

On the heels of dispatching the Saints (7-1, 2-1), Batavia will host conference contender Elgin on Thursday.

“It’s always good, having a challenge in the middle of the season,” Larson said. “It kind of makes it so we don’t slack off in midseason getting ready for the big games.”

Larson intended no slight to the Saints, but instead was referencing the Class 3A postseason for which both sides keep building.

Regardless of how the rest of the conference race plays out, Batavia knew defeating East would go a long way to that end.

And all the better, of course, given the Saints’ 5-0 victory in Batavia at the beginning of last season.

With 20:50 to play in the first half, Batavia’s per sistence produced the only goal it needed. With East unable to clear, the Bulldogs gained possession again, as Nathan Carey sent a cross to Vilchuck, who tried to play it back. The ball bounced through traffic and reached Larson’s feet near the front of the goal.

“It was just a turn and hit it kind of thing,” Larson said.

“He’s been a definite bright spot today. He’s really grown up as a sophomore,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said. “He looks every bit of a solid varsity goalkeeper.”

Fiddelke matched that effort and then some, namely in the opening minutes of the second half, when his stop of midfielder Taylor Ortiz 20 seconds in set the tone.

Midway through the half, East again worked into Batavia’s 18-yard box but was unable to get a solid touch close to Fiddelke as the defense converged.

East earned a corner kick 20 seconds later, but a header went over the bar after Tyler Robbins sent the ball in.

“They created a lot of chances,” Larson said.

“They’re a team that’s great in the attacking third. And I think we were pretty lucky

sometimes, but our back four did a great job of getting the ball out, and the goalkeeping was good, too.”

Jennison admitted his mood wouldn’t have been as perspective-driven had the Saints fallen in a sectional final, as was the case last season.

Much like the Bulldogs, the Saints will be challenged again soon enough, traveling to Waubonsie Valley Thursday before hosting their annual tournament next week.

“I think the word ‘intensity’ is pretty cliché, but I really think it came down to that,” Jennison said. “I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t have had the game under control. I think with the players we had on the field, we should have been capable to do a lot more than we were in terms of possession, in terms of attacking threat.

Just, you know, sometimes it’s just not your day. Batavia did exactly what they needed to do.”

I’m pretty excited. I didn’t plan on being undefeated, but it’s a good surprise.

What do you expect your biggest challenges to be coming down the stretch of the season?

Probably just the weekend tournaments. We have one coming up, and I think it has a lot of good schools in it, and then probably sectionals and conference will be challenging, too.

How nice is it to have [Geneva No. 1 singles standout Kirby Einck] in the mix as somewhat of a mentor?

She’s been a good mentor.

She’s definitely helped me improve and work on things.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

Emma Hazel. Emma is really smart and she takes a lot of AP classes.

Sophomore Grace Krueger plays No. 2 singles for Geneva behind senior Kirby Einck. On Saturday, Krueger reinforced the notion that the Vikings have a capable, heir apparent for the top spot once Einck graduates.

Krueger beat a trio of opponents in straight sets to win the No. 2 singles championship at the St. Charles East Invitational, remaining unbeaten on the season. By RAE PADILLA FRANCOEUR More Content Now At this year’s BookExpo America in New York City, Tavis Smiley spoke at a breakfast gathering about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the grueling, fraught last year of King’s life.

Smiley, himself an eloquent and moving speaker, said that the years since King’s 1968 assassination have not served King’s legacy well.

He is remembered primarily for the sniper’s bullet that brought him down on April 4, 1968, for his unequivocal stand on nonviolence, and for little else beyond a “handful of fanciful speeches.”

“Ironically, his martyrdom has undermined his message.”

Smiley said he intended for this new book, “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year,” to restore some depth to our recollections of this great and complicated man.

Between April 4, 1967, when King first publicly spoke out about the link between the war in Vietnam and racism, and April 4, 1968, when he was killed, he refused to defer to his detractors who strongly urged him to reconsider.

Almost twice as many blacks as whites were fighting and dying in Vietnam, King argued. The link between the war, unnecessary and violent, racism and poverty is there for all to see. If we oppose racism, we must oppose the war.

Many of King’s closest supporters and advisors told him that he would make a grave and irrational error if he linked the war to racism.

They suggested his ego was clouding his judgment. Why endanger their standing and alienate their most valuable advocate? President Lyndon Johnson was conducting a committed, vigorous campaign in Vietnam at the time. Attacking the war was tantamount to attacking Johnson, one of the blacks’ most useful and influential allies.

Friends, aides, media and followers opposed and ultimately vilified King, even in his presence in public gatherings.

Adding to the harsh stressors were 127 race riots in the summer of 1967, an escalation in the number of threats against King’s life and the FBI’s ramped-up campaign to discredit King at any cost.

Among the most crushing incidents was a march in Memphis, just weeks before his assassination, that took a violent turn. King was in the march and the media levied harsh blame on the flagging crusader.

The youngest Nobel Laureate in history had been marginalized. His ideas about poverty linked to the war and about nonviolence were suddenly out of date.

Black power seemed to supplant passive resistance. What King and the movement achieved was yesterday’s news.

The country was moving on in new and difficult directions.

King was badly hurt. Yet he felt immensely responsible, as if he, by sheer effort and will, could unite opposing factions and restore nonviolent civil disobedience as the operative tool.

The exhausted and depressed man,

growing more tired and embattled by the day, never gave up. He produced rousing sermons of hope for all time, sermons that were surely written as a means to personal inspiration.

The book does a creditable job building a taut and distressing arc.

From the day of the announcement to the day of King’s death by gunshot, the story grows heavy and weary and terribly sad.

In the last pages, the author brings us to a clearing, where King seems to have come to terms with the cruelest of his torments – his fragile mortality.

“I’d rather be dead than afraid,” he tells his friends.

Use of antibiotics in animals is serious health issue Dear Doctor K: In a recent column on antibiotics, you didn’t mention their use in meat and poultry as a cause of antibiotic resistance. Hasn’t this contributed to the problem?

Dear Reader: You’re correct. In the United States, food-producing animals such as cattle and poultry are regularly treated with antibiotics. This has contributed to antibiotic resistance: bacteria that are no longer susceptible to antibiotics.

How do bacteria become resistant? Let’s say you take penicillin to treat a bacterial infection.

The bacteria in your body are constantly dividing and multiplying; one bacterium can grow into more than a million in 24 hours.

Each time the bacteria divide, there is a small chance that one of their genes will develop a mutation. Sometimes those mutations allow the bacteria to resist being killed by the antibiotic and to pass the resistance on to their offspring.

Other times bacteria carry mutated genes in little circles of DNA called plasmids that can be passed between bacteria, thereby spreading antibiotic resistance.

Now suppose you are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Standard antibiotics won’t treat

Overuse of antibiotics in people is the most common cause of drug resistance, but another important cause is antibiotic use in food-producing animals. As in humans, treating animals with antibiotics can produce resistant bacteria.

Why are antibiotics given to food-producing animals?

Sometimes the animals develop bacterial infections. Other times antibiotics are given to animals in a herd to prevent the spread of a bacterial disease that has developed in a few animals of the herd.

However, there is another reason that antibiotics are given to food-producing animals. Several decades ago, it was discovered that feeding animals small doses of certain antibiotics every day caused the animals to gain more weight. Much of that weight is in extra muscle (meat).

Why this happens is uncertain.

My guess is that the antibiotics affect the bacteria in the animals’

intestines, and that this, in turn, causes the animals to absorb more nutrients.

People can get infected when they eat meat contaminated with resistant bacteria. Even nonmeat eaters aren’t safe. Resistant bacteria may contaminate water through animal waste, and that water may be used to irrigate produce. (To be clear, meat and produce can harbor bacteria whether or not they are resistant to antibiotics.)

Take these steps to reduce your risk of infection with foodborne bacteria: • Thoroughly cook meat, poultry and eggs.

• Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meat and other foods.

• Wash your hands frequently, and always after touching raw meat or poultry.

• Don’t drink raw milk.

We must also limit antibiotic use in animal agriculture, as antibiotic resistance is a growing and increasingly serious problem for humans.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-year-old girl who needs your advice. I have a steady boyfriend, and we care about each other very much. The people next door want me to babysit for them five evenings a week, Monday through Friday.

One hundred dollars a week is a lot of money, but you will deserve every penny by being a conscientious and dependable sitter.

My advice? Take the job and see how things progress with your social life. You can always quit if it doesn’t work out well.

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to comment to the girl who was constantly being beaten by her boyfriend, but couldn’t break up with him because she “loved” him.

I, too, loved Ken. In fact, we were engaged to be married after high school. He was a senior, and I was a junior. One night when we were out, we got into an argument and he got so upset he punched me and gave me a black eye. He cried real tears and promised he would never do it again. Well, he never kept his promise. He hit me time after time, and it kept getting worse.

When I got home, my dad figured out what had happened. I was out of crazy stories and lies on why I was battered and bruised. Dad called the police and Ken got a 30-day stay in jail.

I finally had to have corrective surgery so I could breathe out of my nose normally. The doctor told me that if he had hit me a little harder I might have died.

Our entire family ended up moving to another state. Ken wasn’t always a troublemaker, and at one time was a wonderful, sweet guy.

His problem was that he couldn’t control his temper.

So girls, if your boyfriend is beating you, please believe me, the beatings will not stop until the guy gets professional psychiatric help. Life is too short to go through it as a punching bag. Don’t wait as long as I did. Let his FIRST punch be his last.

It is true that children think they know much more than they do. As we age, we realize that our parents and teachers weren’t as limited as we thought. And many feel that a day without learning something new is a day wasted.

Bridge always seems to present new ideas. Take today’s deal as an example. South is in six diamonds. How should he handle the trump suit to maximize the chance of losing at most one trick? And suppose a wheel has come off and South is in seven diamonds. Then what should he do?

In the auction, North might have rebid three spades, which would have shown only twocard support because with three spades he would have responded two spades, not one no-trump.

But with length and strength in the rounded suits, rebidding three no-trump was sensible.

The only problem revolves around the trump suit. If South must play it for no losers, he has two choices: Cash his ace (hoping East has the singleton king) or lead dummy’s queen (hoping West has the singleton jack).

Mathematically, they are equal.

In six diamonds, though, I thought the best play was to cash the ace first. But the free software package SuitPlay (suitplay.com) claims that starting with South’s nine is better. If West plays low, declarer ducks in the dummy.

And if that loses to East’s jack, South cashes his ace next. The probability of success is 81.3 percent. One lives and learns.

Kaneland prepares to start superintendent search Board to vote on hiring of search firm With hopes of having the district’s next permanent superintendent named by January, the Kaneland School District 302 Board tonight is set to hire a search firm to begin the process.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. today at the administrative offices near Kaneland High School in Maple Park, and the only item listed on the agenda is the approval of a search firm for the superintendent. On Monday night, a news release was issued that indicated the board will vote today to hire BWP and Associates to conduct the search.

The search is necessary because Jeff Schuler, Kaneland’s previous superintendent, left the district to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville School District 200. Renee Goier is the district’s interim superintendent, replacing Ken Sorrick who resigned a day after he was hired in the role.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla Cheryl Krauspe, president of the school board, said Tuesday the goal is to have the next superintendent named by Jan. 15. BWP officials will begin to identify candidates, and there will be input from those in the community, she said, and that will take some time.

“As early as we want to start the process, we don’t want to rush it,” Krauspe said. “It’s not like we have an immediate need. We are in good shape with Dr. Goier, who is excellent.”

When Sorrick was identified as the interim superintendent, a significant part of his duty would have been to conduct the search for the long-term superintendent.

Sorrick was to make $90,000 for his time with the district. Such a search is not part of Goier’s role, and her pay is $80,000 for 100 days.

The district has estimated the hiring of the search firm will cost between $17,000 and $18,400.

Krauspe on Tuesday said board members “are all

feeling very strongly about engaging the community and our stakeholders” as part of the search.

“We wouldn’t want to undergo this process without hearing all of the voices of our stakeholders,” said Krauspe, who added board members might find “innovative ways” to hear those voices.

She said faculty members are “anxious to give input, and the district wouldn’t ever consider going through a process like this without hearing from a strong teacher voice.”

The board interviewed the search firms in public session at last week’s school board meeting. At the time, board members spoke with BWP representatives about the process. Board member Peter Lopatin said it would be up to the board to establish “clear marching orders” for the firm.

At the meeting, representatives from BWP explained the process. One, Mark Friedman, said once everything is underway, the district can have candidates in a day or two. A big key, he said, would be the recruitment effort.

“Your next superinten-

dent is working somewhere else right now, possibly,” he said. “You don’t want to rule out internal candidates.”

It will be the district’s first such search in many years. When Schuler was hired in 2006, it was as the district’s assistant superintendent for human resources. At the time, Kaneland officials said they were paying close attention the candidates’ potential to grow within the district, including the possibility of eventually becoming superintendent.

When Schuler was identified as the district’s next superintendent in 2009, replacing the retiring Charles McCormick, there was no search. Schuler became associate superintendent and transitioned into the superintendent role by 2010.

Krauspe, looking back, said that was a “seamless transition” and called Schuler’s time leading up to becoming superintendent “a wonderful introduction.” She did note the district eventually eliminated the human resources position.
