Time capsule to be reburied for St. Charles bicentennial

CHARLES – A vault with a time capsule that was recently dug up in downtown St. Charles will be reburied in a couple of weeks, said Peter Suhr, the city’s public works director. The vault, which likely weighs up to 400 pounds, was brought to the surface a few weeks ago by crews working on the renovation project of the municipal parking lot, Suhr said. The lot is located directly north of the St. Charles Municipal Building, at 2 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles.

“We’re going to put it back in the ground and wait for the time capsule to elapse,” Suhr said Monday.

The vault with the time capsule was buried next to a monument located on a patch of grass south of the St. Charles Police Department and near the Riverwalk. The city was aware that the time capsule would have to be moved temporarily during the renovation project, Suhr said.

The monument includes a bell and an inscription which says: “Time Capsule placed July 3, 1984. To be opened at a bicentennial ceremony during the year 2034.”

The city of St. Charles will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2034.

The monument will be located in the same general area as it was before after the lot renovation is complete, and the time capsule will be buried right behind the monument, Suhr said.

Suhr said the parking lot project should be complete in time for the annual St. Charles Scarecrow Fest, which begins Oct. 10. City officials have been in touch with the fest’s organizers at the Greater St. Charles Convention & Visitors Bureau, he said.

Drug rehab court set to showcase art, writing

St. Charles City Council OKs union contract

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday unanimously approved a four-year contract for one of its employee unions.

The contract is for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local Union No.

330. The union represents 54 employees in the departments of public works, finance and community development, said Mark Koenen, St. Charles city administrator.

Under the conditions of the contract, the employees will receive a two percent pay increase in the first year of the

contract, which retroactively begins May 1 and will expire April 30, 2018. The union employees will receive another two percent pay increase in the second year of the contract, Koenen said.

The third and fourth years of the contract contain a reopener clause to discuss the economic conditions of that

period, he said.

Union members ratified the contract after the collective bargaining process, according to the city’s executive summary for a council meeting agenda item on the contract.

The union’s previous contract expired April 30.

Koenen said negotiations be-

gan toward the beginning of summer.

Council members met in executive session for about 15 minutes before they voted on the union contract. Ward 2 Alderman Art Lemke confirmed that the council received updates about negotiations for the contract in previous executive sessions.

Batavia aldermen approve extension for Walgreens New store will be in downtown

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting unanimously approved giving Batavia Enterprises a 120-day extension of

the redevelopment agreement for the new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as the company works out a lease agreement with Walgreens corporate officials.

Aldermen approved both the redevelopment agreement and the real estate transfer agreement, which is part of the redevelopment agreement.

Batavia Enterprises needs the extension because it is trying

to get its lease and financing finalized for the Walgreens project.

Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey said the new Walgreens store could open by October 2015 if the project starts this year.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot build-

Geneva aldermen prioritize Rt. 31 fixes

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva alderman unanimously approved taking $208,000 from the city’s capital budget to have the cash available if the state would agree to turn the city’s southern section of Route 31 into a two-lane road with turn lanes.

The project is called a “road-diet,” which involves taking an undivided four-lane roadway and turning it into two through lanes and a center two-way left turn lane.

After more than an hour of discussion Monday, aldermen voted 10-0 to re-prioritize its current budget year capital projects.

Cash previously set aside for work on the Fourth Street commuter lot will be made available for this project – if the Illinois Department of Transportation agrees it should be done.

If the state does not agree the project should move forward, aldermen will take action to re-allocate the money back to the Fourth Street parking lot improvements, officials said.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the unanimous vote indicates to him that the issue has priority.

“I think the City Council this evening determined it is worth our time, it is worth our energies to investigate the opportunity to make improvements to the south stretch of Route 31,” Burns said.

Second Ward Alderman Donald Cummings said different highway safety studies show significant improvements to safety when these types of configurations are done – from 29 percent to as high as 47 percent.

“If we have a good endgame out there, and it’s not necessarily costing us anything to look into this – I think

it’s a do,” Cummings said. “I think it’s a yes. I’m in favor of pushing ahead and diverting the money so we can do this.”

Fifth Ward Alderman Tom Simonian, in whose ward that stretch of Route 31 is located, contacted 267 residents on 16 streets near Route 31 Fabyan Parkway, and estimated about 70 percent were in favor.

The reconfiguration would include bike paths, fulfilling the city’s 2005 bike plan.

Those on bikes have end up cutting through driveways to connect to the forest preserve.

Officials said Batavia also was interested in the plan.

Simonian said residents would be willing to put up the first money for presenting the project to the state to find out if it is feasible.

“They are willing to pick up that cost for the first phase,” Simonian said. “No taxpayer dollars would be used to get it to IDOT to find out if it is feasible.”

another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it.

Costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated at about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of about $520,250. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

Civil War comes to life in Batavia Encampment part of Batavia Depot Museum birthday celebration

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Members of the Masini family of Batavia got more than they expected when they stopped by a Civil War encampment Sunday that commemorated the 160th birthday of the Batavia Depot Museum.

As they were viewing the different demonstrations and exhibits at the museum, President Abraham Lincoln, played by actor Max Daniels, met with them and recited his best-known speech, the Gettysburg Address.

“I never thought I would hear President Lincoln saying the Gettysburg Address,” said Katie Masini, who was at the Civil War encampment with her children and husband.

Sunday’s activities wrapped up the birthday celebration, which kicked off Wednesday with a program on the role of railroads in the Civil War. The depot, which dates to 1854, originally was at the southeast corner of Van Buren and Webster streets and was moved to its current location at 155 Houston St. in October 1973 and turned into a museum.

years. His, wife, Donna, portrays Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.

“It is a way to teach history,” Max Daniels said. “I always refer to the 1860s as our teenage years. We almost killed ourselves as a nation.”

And he said the role has given him perspective.

“It gives me hope and perspective that we are a great nation,” Daniels said. “I’m excited that I am an American.”

Civil War buff Natalie Cruse, of Batavia, watched with interest as a demonstration on medical techniques was shown as part of the Civil War encampment.

“I think they did very well,” Cruse said. “They were pretty accurate, from what I’ve read.”

Cruse said she believes one can learn a lot from the Civil War. “It was a very interesting time to live with very interesting issues,” she said.

The Office restaurant set to reopen Oct. 8 after fire

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Office Dining & Spirits plans to reopen on Oct. 8, a little more than a month after it was damaged in a fire on Aug. 27.

St. Charles firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $125,000 in damage to the structure and contents of The Office, which is at 201 E. Main St. in downtown St.

Charles.

“No official determination has been made,” St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said Monday. “Some of the equipment has been taken for evidence. There’s a lot of focus on the duct work in the kitchen.”

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found smoke showing from the roof of the building. When they entered the building, firefighters found a fire above the ceiling in the kitchen area of the restaurant.

The fire was extinguished in an hour.

The Office has been open since January 2011. Before that, McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub had occupied the space for 15 years, owner Sean Williams has said. The structure was built in the 1840s and was the location of St. Charles Office Supply for many years.

The restaurant employs 61 people. Williams could not be reached for comment on Monday.

LOCAL BRIEF Volunteer training session offered today ST. CHARLES – Fox Valley Court Watch will provide a training session today for interested volunteers in Kendall and Kane counties.

The training will be in the training room of the St. Charles Police Department, 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles.

The day will begin at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast and will end at 4 p.m.

Volunteers must be 18, have an email address, have daily email access and commit to at least one half-day session

on a weekday per month for at least six months.

Road closures announced for St. Charles East homecoming parade KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Motorists should expect delays Friday afternoon in downtown St. Charles during the St. Charles East homecoming parade, St. Charles police announced Monday in a news release.

The 2014 St. Charles East High School homecoming parade will be at 1 p.m. Friday on Main Street (Route 64). The parade begins at East Main and 6th Street and will travel east across the Main Street bridge to 2nd Avenue, according to the release.

Fifth and 6th streets between Main and Illinois streets will close beginning at 11 a.m.

Friday for parade staging. Second Avenue between Main Street and Illinois Avenue will be closed beginning at 12:30 p.m. to allow parade units to exit at the parade route.

Both Main and 2nd streets

(Route 31) will be closed starting at 12:45 p.m. Friday. Main Street will be closed between 7th Street and 5th Avenue (Route 25), and traffic will be detoured to Illinois Street during the parade. Trucks that use Main Street on a regular basis are encouraged to use Route 38, according to the release.

Second Street will be closed between State and Illinois streets. Second Street traffic will be detoured to 7th Street.

Trucks that use 2nd Street on a regular basis are encouraged to use Randall Road as an alternate route, according to the release.

Motorists should use care and be watchful for pedestrians before, during and after the parade, according to the release. Traffic assistance will be provided by St. Charles police and Emergency Management personnel stationed throughout the detour route.

The store also began hosting the Fox Valley Holistic Health Celebration for six

years, pulling the holistic and alternative community together, the newsletter states.

Craig Carmany said it was not possible to sell the business because of a lack of potential buyers.

“This is a specialized type of thing, and [it is] difficult to find people who can do this stuff – the things we do,” Craig Carmany said.

With the closing of the store, J.R. Carmany will be more available for her clients, working out of temporary locations in Geneva and Batavia while seeking a more permanent location.

Robert Langeness of Geneva said he was saddened to hear of the store’s impending closing.

“It will be a major loss for Geneva,” Langeness said. “I bought things there, and they are very, very helpful people.

I witnessed many a time – they took you as a customer, not a number. I’m so sorry to hear that they are closing.”

GENEVA – After being open seven days a week for 35 years, the owners of health food store Soup to Nuts, at 716 W. State St. in Geneva, announced they will close Oct. 31.

“We are retiring,” said Craig Carmany, who owns the store with his wife, J.R. Camany. “J.R. will continue with her healing practice, HealthWise Holistic.”

Soup to Nuts, known as a resource for alternative products, holistic health and organic produce, announced the closure in its current newsletter.

“It was with a heavy heart that J.R. and Craig Carmany made the hard decision due to the changing landscape of retail health food stores,” the newsletter states, in part.

When the Carmanys took over the store in 1990, Soup to Nuts was the only place to find alternatives – such as

gluten-free bread or non-dairy milk products. Products that were once unique at Soup to Nuts are now commonplace, the newsletter states.

For example, the store had a whole aisle of milk alternatives because there was nowhere else to go for them.

Now, that is reduced to a fourfoot section, according to the newsletter.

“We can’t compete on the retail level any longer, but we can still have a significant impact on both individual health and the education of the community,” the newsletter states.

While the store’s merchandise became more commonplace, large chains still could not compete with the Carmanys’ training in how to help individual customers with their personal interest in health, according to the newsletter.

St. Charles Savers to close today

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Savers store, 3880 E. Main St., will close its doors today, said Matt Dolan, a front-end supervisor at the store. “[Tuesday] is the last we’re open for business,” Dolan said on Monday.

The thrift shop’s entire inventory will be 50 percent off until the store’s 9:30 p.m. closing time, according to posted signs at the store. Unsold items will go to the Carol Stream Savers store or be recycled, Dolan said.

Employees were told the store was closing because of the overhead costs associated with the store building and the 18-month Route 64 construction project that began in April 2012, Dolan said.

All St. Charles employ-

ees were offered a chance to transfer to a different store, he said.

At least one other Chicago-area Savers store is closing this week. The Savers at 945 S. Rand Road in Lake Zurich is holding a 50 percent off sale and will close its doors for good at 10 p.m. today, according to a store employee that declined to give his name.

Savers Spokeswoman Sara Gaugl earlier this month did not return multiple phone messages seeking comment on the status of the St. Charles store.

The St. Charles Savers opened in summer 2012 in a former Toys R Us location.

Proceeds from Chicago-area Savers stores benefit the Friends of the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago, according to the Savers website.

Busy bustle at county’s monthly electronic recycling event ST. CHARLES – The double row of cars and vans lined up and moved ahead slowly, each loaded with electronics to be disposed of for recycling.

Among them were Cathy Blanton of Aurora and Reg Wnek of St. Charles.

“I’ve got some small electronics from my son,” Wnek said.

At the destination end of the line 40-plus large boxes were laid end to end as a contingent of workers from an electronic waste collection service dumped old TVs, computers, keyboards, microwaves, stereos, boom boxes and other items from back seats and trunks.

Saturday was Kane County’s free monthly electronics recycling event, held the second Saturday of each month at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, by the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s office and branch court.

Resource Conservation and Recycling Program Coordinator Jennifer Jarland came by on a bicycle, carrying over her shoulder a big bag of small electronics someone just dropped off instead of getting into the long lines.

“We receive an average of 70,000 pounds of electronics per month – four to five semitrucks full,” Jarland said.

“But we’ve had as high as 133,500 pounds in June 2014.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – An Aurora man must repay $45,000 to Rosary High School for money he stole and then gambled away while he worked as the school’s business manager.

Kevin J. Carew, 36, of Aurora was sentenced Friday by Circuit Judge John Barsanti to four years’ probation and ordered to repay $45,000 to Rosary.

In June, Carew entered a blind guilty plea to one count of theft from a school, a felony.

During the plea and sentencing hearings, prose -

cutors presented evidence that between June 2010 and September 2012, Carew embezzled about $49,000 from Rosary’s operations account, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

C a r e w used the money for gambling purposes and Kevin J. Carew for trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, prosecutors said.

Rosary’s operations account covered such expenses

as payroll and financial aid, according to the school.

In addition to the probation and restitution, Carew was ordered by the court to attend self-help classes to deal with gambling addiction, and to obtain counseling and follow all recommendations, the release stated.

He also is prohibited by the court from entering any gambling establishments.

After the sentencing hearing, Carew presented a check to the court in the amount of $48,000, which included $3,000 in court costs.

The school’s insurance company covered the stolen money.

The $45,000 was restitution to the school for costs it incurred while investigating how the money disappeared.

Carew had been free on $4,000 bond.

“In stealing from a small, religiously affiliated school that seeks to teach its students to be responsible and ethical citizens, Mr. Carew’s selfish acts placed an unnecessary burden on Rosary High School,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said, according to the release. “This sort of theft is a major crime that inflicts significant financial and emotional costs on the community as a whole.”

Unkempt yard in St. Charles Township leads to ticket

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A. St. Charles Township homeowner whose yard “disturbed” neighbors by its lack of maintenance has been ticketed for its appearance, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

the 38W500 block of Mallard Lake Road, was cited Sept. 8 with having an overgrown residential yard containing noxious weeds.

Police in the report described Robbins’ front and rear yards as a “nuisance to the neighborhood.”

Police reportedly tried to serve the ordinance violation in person, but there was no answer, so it was delivered by mail.

Attempts to reach Robbins for comment were unsuccessful.

Aurora man ordered to repay $45K to Rosary

The county contracts with eWorks Electronics Services, an R2 certified electronics recycler.

The county also does book recycling at the same time, taking in 5,000 to 10,000 pounds a month, Jarland said.

“This year so far, we have collected over 60,000 pounds total,” Jarland said. “About 10 percent to 15 percent are reused, and the rest are recycled. Pacesetter Books provides this service for the county.”

At this particular event, the county also accepted waste latex paint and offered a document shredding service.

Next month’s collection will be on Oct. 11.

Architect Cantrell dies at 93 Created 1st dirt road that became Randall Road

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Robert J. Cantrell, the architect whose 1949 dirt road eventually became Randall Road, died Aug. 18 in an assisted living facility in Arizona of congestive heart failure.

Cantrell, an architect who designed several commercial buildings, including the former State Bank on the east side of the Fox River and the Blue Goose building – which since has been torn down – lived in St. Charles Township from 1949 to 1970, his daughter Janet Stamm said.

She was born to Emil and Elaine VanDeVeire, in Geneva, IL. She married her loving husband Clifford P. “Tex” Maxwell August 5, 1950 in St. Patrick Catholic Church.

She loved her home and family, and enjoyed doing needlework and reading.

died, but we are celebrating his life – he was a great guy,” Stamm, of Gilbert, Arizona, said. “Everywhere he lived – including St. Charles those 21 years – he participated as fully as he could outside of his job to contribute to the good of his communities. I admired him all my life, and I’m very proud of him, very proud to be his daughter.”

Cantrell bought 40 acres of forested land about a mile north of Dean Street and used a tractor to put in that first dirt road and then graded it, Stamm said.

“It was on the county plans to put in and develop Randall

Road, but when he bought the property in 1949, they had not even begun joining the pieces,” Stamm said. “He had to take an old tractor and get something in there, so he could begin work on his own property.”

He subdivided the property and called it Timber Valley, now at the intersection of Randall Robert J. and Thorn Cantrell Tree Road in St. Charles Township, Stamm said.

“There is an old picture of him and my mom standing in front of a sign, ‘Lots for Sale,’ about 1950,” Stamm said. “St. Charles was a small town then, a bedroom community.

Geneva station to work in Chicago.”

Cantrell also served on the St. Charles School District 303 Board in the 1960s, Stamm said. She said she graduated from St. Charles High School in 1967.

Cantrell grew up in Kansas and northern Texas, beginning his career as an architect and draftsman designing training airfields there and in New Mexico. In 1943, he moved to Chicago and worked at the metallurgical lab at the University of Chicago, part of the The Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb, according to an obituary from the family.

Cantrell was project manager for the design and construction of the original McCormick Place in Chicago.

He owned a private architectural practice in St.

Charles from 1960 to 1970; then he was vice president and construction manager for the New York firm of McKee, Burger & Mansueto from 1970 to 1983.

After he retired, Cantrell began the Recovering from Homelessness Program with a nonprofit organization, Whittier Area First Day Coalition, in Whittier, California, a Los Angeles suburb, also according to the obituary. The program provides assistance and support to people trying to restore their lives after having been homeless.

Cantrell also is survived by two other daughters, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

GEORGE V. ZIMMERMAN Born: May 25, 1922 Died: Sept. 14, 2014 George V. Zimmerman, 92, of St. Charles died Sunday, September 14, 2014.

George was born in Maywood, IL on May 25, 1922.

He was born to the late Estelle and George W. Zimmerman of Oak Park, IL. George graduated from Oak Park/

River Forest Township High School in 1942. He received a BS in Radio Engineering from the Chicago Technical College. He married Cecilia Eis in November of 1952.

In 1942 George served in the Army Signal Corp. in France and Belgium during World War II. He received a number of honorable discharges from the CMCC, the Regular Army, the Army Reserve and the Air National Guard.

After the war, as an electrical engineer, he worked for Jefferson Electric, Oxford Electric, General Time and Elgin Watch. George’s gauge designs found themselves in Nasa’s Mercury Space Project.

In 1954 George and his wife Cecilia moved to St. Charles, IL. There George initiated the East Side Improvement Association, and was elected to the Planning Board where he served as Chairman for 15 years. He was instrumental in the development of Munhull Grade School. He taught mathematics two days a week to American Airlines Navigators at Midway Airport. He was active as a Cub Scout leader and Little League Baseball coach for his four sons.

He was an original member of the Silver Foxes Senior Group at St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

He attended daily Mass and was an usher at 7:30 Mass on Sundays, until his illness prevented him from

continuing. He was a commander of the local VFW many years ago.

George is survived by his five children, Rand (Cindy), Michael, Tom (Casie), Peggy (Larry), and Jim; eight grandchildren, Nick, Emily, Tim, David, Dan, Jessica, Reed, Carrie; three great-grandchildren, Luke, Jacob, Clara, two sisters, Lois, Marilyn; and brother, Jack.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob; and sister, Joan.

St. Charles man pleads guilty to residential burglary

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A St. Charles man must serve time in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to residential burglary last week, according to Kane County court records.

Michael G. Huston, 27, was charged with residential burglary, Michael a Class 1 fel- G. Huston ony, and possession of burglary tools, a Class 4 felony, after a March 17 incident in which he was shot by a homeowner in the 38W000 block of Mallard Lake Road in unincorporated St. Charles Township, police have said.

Huston was identified as an intruder in that incident.

Huston pleaded guilty to

residential burglary on Sept.

11. The other charge against him was dismissed, records show. Judge James C. Hallock accepted the plea.

He was sentenced to seven years in prison but will get credit for 178 days of time served, according to records.

He also must pay $830 in fines and costs.

The homeowner, who had a valid Illinois FOID card, was not charged in the March incident, police have said.

GENEVA – A “Back to School Supper” event is set from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at United Methodist Church of Geneva as part of its free community Third Tuesday Supper events.

Toll Highway Authority to repair joint seals The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (is scheduled to repair the expansion joint seals for the Randall Road Bridge over Interstate 90, which will require single-lane closures on Randall Road for night repairs.

A St. Charles Township man is expected in court Thursday on charges stemming from a traffic incident, in which he fled from police at almost 100 mph, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Paul A. Padilla, 33, of the 7N200 block of Barb Hill Drive, was charged Sept.

10 with disobeying a stop Paul A. Padilla sign; speeding for reportedly going more than 35 mph over the posted limit; driving in the wrong lane; illegal transportation of alcohol; driving under the influence; possession of marijuana and felony aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude police.

Police reported Padilla ran a stop sign at McDonald and Stevens roads in Elgin Township and accelerated to 99 mph in a 45 mph zone after the squad car’s emergency lights were activated.

He again ran a stop sign at Stevens and Silver Glen roads in St. Charles Township, police said.

As he traveled west on Silver Glen Road, Padilla reportedly looked back, accelerated and drove in the eastbound lane and on the shoulder. He nearly lost control at a curve, police reported, but he was able to continue and was clocked going 90 mph.

Padilla stopped just west of Denker Road in Campton Hills, police reported. When asked why he was running away, Padilla claimed he wasn’t running from anyone, police said.

He is expected in court at 9 a.m. Thursday, according to court records.

Back to work THE WASHINGTON POST Prior to the “Great Recession,” two-thirds of working-age Americans were either working or seeking work.

But since 2007, when it averaged 66 percent, the labor-force participation rate has plunged by 3 percentage points through the first half of this year, and the decline continued even after the admittedly subpar recovery began.

In August, just 62.8 percent of the working-age population was in the labor force, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and there is a real possibility that labor-force participation may never return to its pre-crisis level. This threatens prosperity for two related reasons: A permanently smaller labor supply means a reduction in the economy’s capacity to grow; and the smaller economic pie will have to be shared with a larger “dependent” – i.e., non-working – population.

What to do about this problem depends greatly on why it’s occurring – but economists debate the degree to which it reflects long-term structural factors, such as the aging population, or the lingering effects of the brutal recession, such as larger-than-usual numbers of discouraged workers and long-term unemployed. If the problem is cyclical in nature, experts say, that argues for a continuation of the Federal Reserve’s easy-money policies, to help boost shortterm growth; insofar as it’s structural, government needs to devote more attention and resources to solutions, such as immigration, more efficient training and education, or the reform of disability programs that currently incentivize workers to exit the labor force.

It’s such a central issue that a standing-room-only audience assembled Friday at the Brookings Institution to hear the latest research results from five top Fed economists (affiliated with the central bank but not speaking on behalf of it).

Their study suggests that three-quarters of the drop in labor-force participation during the recession is due to long-term demographic factors – especially the aging of the population; the recession coincided with the first baby boomers retiring – that had already been at work prior to the crisis. This, in turn, implies that the Fed can’t do much more in the short run and that, over the long run, the United States is going to have to get much smarter, and more aggressive, about getting the most out of its labor pool. The Fed economists project that labor-force participation will fall to 61 percent by 2022, consistent with previous estimates by the Labor Department and Congressional Budget Office.

The Fed team’s conclusions are controversial, especially among economists who argue there is still too much unexplained slack in the labor market for the monetary authorities to contemplate ending its stimulus programs – which is what the central bank has already started to do.

Yet even if the Fed delays tightening, it has to tighten someday. By the same token, even if the Fed economists underestimate the cyclical component of labor-force shrinkage, the demographic component is still plainly very large.

For this structural weakness, the country needs structural policy changes, sooner or later, so the wise course would be to start working on them now.

Shortages of qualified tradespeople were unheard of before 2008 when the homebuilding market was flourishing. In 2012, when the housing market began to improve, many residential builders chose to end their partnership with skilled craftsmen. Instead, they began to use cheaper, lower-skilled subcontractors who can provide cutrate bids because they pay their employees the lowest possible

wages with little or no health insurance or other benefits.

The assertion that a shortage of workers is the cause of delays in construction or renovation would be laughable if it was not so offensive. In a desperate attempt to recoup their losses after the 2008 economic downturn, these homebuilders have turned to the less skilled and less experienced workers because they can get them for less money. This has not translated into less expensive homes, but, as stock prices show, healthy profits for the homebuilders.

If these groups really want to resolve the issue of slowed

construction and renovation, they simply need to renew their partnership with skilled craftsmen, who have the experience and expertise to safely build cost-effective homes in a timely manner.

So when the NAHB cries out for skilled craftsmen, please remind them that members of the Carpenters Union are here, ready to meet the demands of the residential industry and deliver quality homes, on time, every time.

Beginning today, major league teams can negotiate with unattached minor league clubs for two weeks. The Cubs’ decision to end their PDC with Short-A Boise and possibly do the same with Advanced-A Daytona has the Cougars and those in other MWL circles cognizant of a possible change.

Per ballparkdigest.com, the Cougars, Beloit, Fort Wayne and South Bend are the lone MWL clubs that haven’t renewed PDCs. Each team in the corresponding Class-A South Atlantic League is attached to a PDC next season.

Cougars announced a capital improvement project for the 2015 season, the club’s 25th in Geneva.

Construction projects include a high-definition video replay board, expanded weight room, advanced video room, new batting cage and climate-controlled hitting tunnels and a permanent music pavilion/concert area.

The Cougars already have removed seats from behind home plate for a premium viewing area that includes wait service, and plan to begin concrete work on that phase next week.

Haug said those projects were in the works regardless, and not a bid to woo the Cubs back.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Rogers said. “I had a whole bunch of stuff in my hands.

And just the start of another special night. In what Rogers called the Cougars’ “Last Supper” on the picnic table in the middle of the clubhouse, players and staff dine on prime rib and other fine foods provided by the organization.

Monday The Cubs name righthander Jen-Ho Tseng, 19, their minor league pitcher of the year after the undrafted free agent from Taipei, Taiwan goes 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA, 85 strikeouts and 15 walks over 105 innings as part of a formidable Cougars pitching staff.

Tseng is honored at Wrigley Field in a pregame ceremony, a separate nod to the one the Cubs give the entire Cougars team for winning the league title.

“Most of us were at short season last year and haven’t played a full year,” Rogers said. “We said this might have gone by faster than short season. Great group of guys and great coaching staff and it was a pleasure to play with them.”

GENEVA – Sitting in the conference room in the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark front office Monday, Cougars general manager Curtis Haug uttered the following: “It just seemed like it was destiny for it to happen, and it happened,” he said.

Then, moments later: “They had so much confidence. It was unbelievable.”

Haug spoke of the Cougars team that clinched the Midwest League championship Saturday night, not of the Cubs executives with whom he hopes to extend the club’s player-development contract beginning in 2015.

That matter is hardly as cut-and-dried as the Cougars’ on-field success this season.

“At this point, we don’t know much,” Haug said.

“We’ve had on-and-off discussions for over a year now, so we’ll see what happens here.”

The Cougars ended their two-year PDC with the Cubs in the best manner possible, going 98-49, including postseason, to win the franchise’s first MWL title since 2001.

Much of the Cubs brass descended on Fifth Third Bank Ballpark during the season and in 2013, a nod to the convenient commute from Wrigley Field. Despite optimism from both sides – new Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich and Cubs president of scouting and play-

Cougars rewarded for holding best record Team earns Midwest League title

By STEPHANIE METZGER editorial@kcchronicle.com EASTLAKE – The Kane County Cougars held the best record in baseball this season.

Their reward was the 2014 Midwest League title.

The Cougars defeated the Lake County Captains, 7-2, on Saturday to complete a threegame sweep of the Midwest League Championship Series.

Pitching, defense and offense all seemed to click for the Cougars, who outscored their opponent, 17-5, in the series.

“We looked forward to that dog pile,” Cougars first baseman Jacob Rogers said of the Cougars’ title celebration. “Not many of us had that in college ball, so dogpiling like that and celebrating with our boys is great. We’re like a family out there.”

The Captains took the early lead as Indians first-round draft pick Clint Frazier doubled home Ivan Castillo, but the Cougars crafted a strong rebuttal.

Rogers drew a lead-off walk and came around to score on a double by shortstop Carlos Penalver, but the big blow occurred in the third inning.

Jeimer Candelario sent a oneout single to left before Rogers unleashed his 17th home run of the season for the 3-1 lead.

“I figured he was trying to get ahead, so I just wanted to look for a fastball. He got it over the plate and I put a good swing on it,” Rogers said.

Rogers, the Cubs’ 40th round pick in 2012, hit .268 with a team-leading 16 home runs during the regular season. He also credited his team’s arms, including Daury Torrez, who received the win and posted a

2.74 ERA through 23 games this season.

“In the first inning, he’s not usually like that,” Rogers noted. “We came back and scored one in the second and just went from there.”

The Kane County staff led the Midwest League with a 2.85 team ERA. Torrez logged the most innings on the Cougars squad with 131.1. Offensively, the team collected a .261 batting

average this year, second-best in the league.

The Captains came close in the 4th inning because of a pair of errors by Penalver at short, but Lake County couldn’t capitalize as Dorssys Paulino tapped into a double-play to end the threat.

Kane County chased Polanco from the game in the 5th inning after a pair of one-out singles.

Aviles with a hit to center that scored one, and Cael Brockmeyer followed with a single to boost the Cougars to the 4-1 lead.

Three unearned runs tapped the nail in the Captains’ coffin in the top of the sixth inning as third baseman Paul Hendrix committed two errors over the course of three plays. Mistakes were the Captains’ Achilles the entire series as the team committed nine errors through three games, including four in Game 2.

The rest was left in the hands of the Kane County bullpen. Michael Heesch replaced Torrez in the sixth inning and logged three scoreless innings, yielding one run on two hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

Francisco Carrillo made quick work of the ninth as he retired the side in order and tallied two strikeouts to secure the Cougars’ title.

The victory marked Kane County’s first Midwest League title since 2001, a series shortened by the Sept. 11 tragedy.

The Cougars end their season with a 98-49 overall record, going 91-49 during the regular season.

Rogers said they hadn’t planned to be the most winning team in all of baseball, but consistent dedication every day paid off.

“It’s not something we really set out to do,” Rogers said. “We set out to just play well every single day and grind. We’ve got a bunch of guys who just want to go out here and do well.”

Left fielder Shawon Dunston echoed Rogers’ sentiments about having a well-rounded team that seemed to play well in all categories.

“That’s all we’ve been doing all year,” Dunston said.

“He’s got a wonderful leg,” Pomazak said, “and I give that kid a ton of credit. … West Chicago does a great job of pressuring the A-gaps, and he made those kicks with some men in their face and a driving rain, too. Without him, it’s a different story. It’s great to be able to get the ball inside the 30 and put points on the board. It takes a lot of pressure off the offense, which is a luxury. So we’re pleased as punch with him.

Sidari, also one of the team’s leading running backs, was held out of the West Chicago game and limited in the two previous games. Durocher has four field goals as a fill-in.

Durocher played soccer throughout his youth but gave the sport up just before high school. He’s a running back/safety with the sophomore team.

“I enjoy it a lot,” Durocher said, “especially the varsity guys, the energy. … It’s a lot of pressure, but when you fulfill it, it’s awesome.”

New coaches ‘carry the vision for the team’ Dave Beebe recalls countless exchanges with former players during his 10 seasons as Aurora Christian defensive coordinator.

Most of them transpired during practice or in segmented gatherings on the sidelines.

Upon taking the reins as Eagles head coach in 2014, Beebe quickly has learned his words merit a much bigger audience. In fact, he admits “there are definitely times that I need to talk more, which I’m not used to.”

“When you’re the head coach, you’ve got to carry the team, you’ve got to carry the vision for the team,” Beebe said. “I’m comfortable with doing that, but it’s definitely something that I’ve got to get used to on a regular basis in terms of communicating that to the players.

“I’ll say this, though: We’ve got just a tremendous group of players. For a first-year coach, I couldn’t ask for a better group of kids that just loves playing with each other. They’re very respectful kids and they work hard. I’m very proud of the way they’re playing right now.”

Aurora Christian aced each of its three nonconference tests, and will look to improve to 4-0 after this week’s Chicago Catholic Conference White opener at St. Ignatius. Beebe’s firstyear head coaching brethren – Bryce Farquhar of St. Charles East and Mike Fitzgerald of St. Francis – also reached milestones after Week 3. Farquhar got his first victory, defeating Elgin, 40-0, while Fitzgerald lost his first game, 17-13, to Marmion.

Through 12 games on the Wheaton Academy sideline, Warriors coach Brad Thornton has not been part of a game closer than 21 points either way.

That includes three straight romps to begin this season – shutout wins by 47, 46 and 36 points.

Acknowledging that the schedule will pick up intensity in the coming weeks, Thornton feels confident in his team’s reaction.

“We haven’t lost at home since that Wheaton Academy game in 2012, so we’ve got to keep that going,” Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro said.

Tim Wheeler and Quinn Gratz picked up assists for Marmion, while Cadets goalkeeper Matt Fletcher made four saves.

Marathoners take their run at Boston at Last Chance BQ.2 GENEVA – Boston Marathon-minded runners took their shot at qualifying for 2015 Saturday through the fastest course local race directors could devise.

Saturday morning’s Last Chance BQ.2 Marathon featured 193 runners, of which 184 finished the race. The course was a 3.2 mile loop at Fabyan Forest Preserve West through Geneva and Batavia, of which runners ran seven times with additional straightaway distance at the start of the race to make it a 26.2 mile course.

There were local runners as well as some from as far away as Texas who came to the race with the idea of earning a chance to run in the Boston Marathon.

“I thought overall the race was great,” said Montgomery resident Sarah Mahaney, the top women’s’ finisher (3:10.34).

“There was plenty of water, Gatorade, food, volunteers. It was great I thought.”

Mahaney said it was the first marathon she had ever run after doing some half marathons.

She finished the race to the cheers of her family who were waiting for her at the finish line with homemade signs and cheers and her mom showing tears of joy as she crossed the finish line.

“I started training for this 15 weeks ago,” she said. “I had just finished a half-marathon and thought ‘Why not, I will go for it.’ Trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon has been a dream of mine ever since I started running cross county back in high school in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Having a loop course like this I loved along with being able to see my friends and my husband who kept track of how many loops I still had to do. But this will go down as one of the greatest days of my life today.”

Milwaukee resident Cameron Ausen was the men’s race winner in a time of 2:39.09. The finish time allowed Ausento to qualify for the Boston Marathon, his fourth time he will participate in the event.

“There were no surprises out there today,” said Ausen, who ran 2:33 in the 2013 Boston Marathon. “It was a great course to run on, and the weather was just perfect to run

in. This was my first time running in a loop marathon, and it was enjoyable. I felt in control of myself the entire time out there.”

Then there was the story of 43-year old Evanston resident Avi Janssen, who ran the course in 3:11.56, which was three seconds under the qualifying time for Boston, which varies by age and gender.

“I had been close on two other occasions in trying to qualify for Boston,” Janssen said.

“This was a beautiful course to run on. It kind of reminded me of what it was like when I ran cross country in high school.

My wife is running next weekend in the Fox Valley Marathon.”

The Fox Valley Marathon and the new Last Chance BQ.2 event are both organized by St. Charles men Craig Bixler and Dave Sheble. Runners also can qualify for the Boston Marathon through the Fox Valley Marathon but not until the 2016 race, whereas Saturday offered more immediacy.

“Today’s event met my expectations,” Bixler, said. “Just hearing people come up to me and saying what a good time

they had and how many people actually qualified for Boston will be how I will judge if this was a good day. No reason to think we won’t be back next year.”

St. Charles resident Andy Chen had been trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon for the past 12 years and could never get over the hump. He was ac-

tually going to try to qualify for the Boston Marathon through a marathon in Minnesota and just be a volunteer for the race in Geneva Saturday.

“Well, my plans got changed and I ended up running today,” he said.

He now intends to spend next April in Boston after running a 3:24.49, which qualified

ELGIN – The St. Charles North girls golf team won the South Elgin Invitational on a rainy Monday afternoon at Elgin County Club. The victorious North Stars had a team score of 163 while Geneva shot a 170 to be runners-up.

Sophomores Kate Lillie and Gianna Furrie took first and third respectively with scores of 34 and 39. Lillie had a bogey and double bogey early on but was able to turn things around as the rain started to fall.

“The weather started to get bad … I was able to use that to focus more,” Lillie said.

She finished the round with

four birdies to shoot 1-under par.

“I feel like I almost have an advantage because I know a lot of girls aren’t experienced in bad weather or just not comfortable,” Lillie said.

Gabriella Spinazze shot a 44 while fellow senior Alina O’Donnell shot a 46 to round out the North scorers.

“Our pre-game before we went out was if it starts to rain it means two things, one the greens are going to slow down and it means you can attack the pin more,” coach Irish Whalen said. “Anything more than that is going to get in your head and you’re going to take yourself out of the game.”

Geneva senior Nicole Hassels shot a 40 to take fourth place overall and help the Vikings take second place in the tournament.

The Tammany Hall bank with a well-dressed man taking the penny is a criticism of corrupt politicians in New York City in 1871. A 1940s blond doll wearing ice skates probably is not recognized today as Sonja Henie, a world-champion ice skater from 1923 to 1936 and star of 12 Hollywood movies. A very rare clockwork toy has four Chinese men tossing a child in a blanket. Each of the men has a brightly painted hat that represents a European country.

The toy, made in the early 1900s by Lehmann in Germany, is a comment on the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, when England, Russia, France and Germany occupied China. A Chinese secret society, the Boxers, led a rebellion against the European countries, killing foreigners and Chinese Christians, and destroying property. An international army that included Americans subdued the uprising. The rebellion ended in 190l, and China paid $330 million in reparations. It seems like a strange idea for a toy. It is claimed that only four of the toys still exist because the action required a complicated mechanism that broke easily. So in recent years, one of these toys in good working condition sold for $14,800.

A: A grain-milling company (or two different companies) named Mountain City Mills was in business in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Frederick, Maryland, in the early 1900s. It’s unusual to find a piece of pressed glass marked like yours. It is possible that Mountain City contracted with a glass manufacturer to make pieces either for employees or as a premium for customers. Pressed glass is not as popular with collectors as it was 20 years ago. Depending on the pattern and size of your bowl, it could sell for $25 or more. ***

Q: Can you tell me anything about a clear pressed glass serving bowl left to my husband by his grandmother? The inside is

condition alligator purse since about 1940. The inside is labeled “Cuba.” Can you tell me what it’s worth?

A: Back in the 1930s, ‘40s and early ‘50s, Cuban manufacturers sold a lot of goods in the United States. Those were the same decades when alligator purses were at their peak of popularity. If the purse is in excellent condition, it probably would sell for $20 to $50.

If it had a high-end designer label, it could sell for many times that.

Fans of young-looking actor Justin Long will have no problem recognizing him during the first half of Kevin Smith’s new horror-comedy “Tusk.”

Well, they might be caught off-guard by the big bushy mustache he’s sporting in the film. But the voice and eyes and manner of speech that he’s shown off in “Galaxy Quest” and “Live Free or Die Hard,” among many others, have made him a familiar and likable film personality. But there might be some difficulty recognizing him – except for those eyes – in the second half, after a mad scientist (Michael Parks) has turned him into a walrus.

Just remember that term “horror-comedy.” The enthusiastic Long, 36, now mustache-free, shared some thoughts about Smith and his film last week at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ed Symkus: The rumor is that Kevin Smith sent you an email offering you the part.

Justin Long: Yeah, that was a little over a year ago now.

I didn’t know anything about the back story. I hadn’t been listening to the podcast that explained the origins of it. Kevin smokes and does these podcasts, and they bring up stories that they find interesting.

One of which was this ad that was taken out in the British version of what would be Craigslist that’s called Gumtree.

The posting said it was looking for a lodger to come stay, free room and board, and all they had to do was dress up as a walrus for two hours during the day. The back story was that this guy was an old adventurer who had been lost at sea, and at one point was kept company by this walrus that was bobbing around his craft, and he felt throughout his life he

Justin Long stars in Kevin Smith’s new horror-comedy “Tusk.” had never formed as deep a connection with a human being as he had with this walrus. He thought he was facing death, so it galvanized this feeling.

It turned out to be a hoax, but it piqued Kevin’s curiosity when he still thought it was true, so much so that he started writing the script. He said in the email that he conceived it as Hammer horror movie, and I love all that stuff, like “human lizard man.”

Now the best way to preface anything with an actor is flattery, and I was flattered by the email, and just by the fact that he would want me to do it.

Symkus: You’ve worked with Kevin on a couple of movies. Do you know him very well?

Long: Not really. I loved working with him, but I’d only done two days on [his film] “Zack and Miri,” and he did only a couple days [acting] on “Die Hard.” But he was very collaborative on this film.

After I read the script, I went over to his house.

There was a little reticence in the idea of giving

somebody like Kevin Smith notes, or ideas that differ from what’s in the script.

But he is the most collaborative, flexible, open-minded guy I’ve ever worked with.

Symkus: It’s a really strange role in an even stranger movie. Were you at all nervous about taking the part?

Long: Oh, yes, absolutely.

I knew I was going to do it because I wanted to work with Kevin, and I got to the point in my career where having fun with these movies became the most important thing.

I found myself taking jobs just because I love to work. My mom was an actress, and I grew up with the mentality that actors go where the jobs are. [An actor friend] said that actors are carnies and they go where the tents are. I think, maybe to my detriment, I followed that.

But then I started weighing jobs a little bit more.

And fun has become the No. 1 criteria.

Symkus: Has any acting training you’ve had prepared you to do a role like this?

Long: For the beginning part of it, I thought a lot about guys who are great storytellers, and Vince Vaughn kept coming to mind because he loves telling stories. But toward the end, with the animal stuff ... . You know, there’s a lot of acting classes.

Like in the Acting 101 intro classes, there’s a lot of animal work – “Be an animal. You’re a monkey, you’re this, you’re that.”

It reminded me a little bit of that, just a basic connecting with the primal part of yourself. Doing that was weirdly liberating.

But squeezing into that claustrophobic suit, and then four hours of makeup, wasn’t fun.

But once I got in there, and I had the tusks on, my job was to just connect to that. I have to become an animal, that’s where the character goes.

I remember one day, my girlfriend and my dog came to the set, and my dog freaked out when he saw it.

My poor dog. What a jerk I am. (Laughs.)

Simple measures combat low blood pressure Dear Doctor K: Recently, my blood pressure has been low. I feel tired and dizzy. What could be causing this and what can I do?

Dear Reader: Low blood pressure is not considered a problem unless, as in your case, it causes symptoms. In fact, if it is not causing symptoms, low blood pressure can be a good thing.

The typical symptoms caused by low blood pressure include weakness and dizziness, which can increase your risk of fainting and falling. If a person who did not previously have low blood pressure develops it, and has weakness and dizziness, he or she could be developing a heart problem.

I’m assuming your doctor has checked you out and has not found any heart problem. So let’s discuss other possible causes of low blood pressure, and what you can do to feel better.

A common cause of low blood pressure is overtreatment of high blood pressure. A person’s blood pressure can vary a lot, day to day and week to week. Particularly when someone is relaxing, the “usual dose” of medicine may cause too much of a drop in blood pressure.

Some other types of commonly prescribed medications also cause blood pressure to drop too low.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Alpha blockers (used for prostate problems, and also for high blood pressure), antihistamines and tricyclic antidepressants are all possible culprits. Your doctor can determine if any of your medications may be affecting your blood pressure.

Dehydration can also cause low blood pressure. You might not feel thirsty, but you could still be dehydrated.

Another possible cause is postural, or orthostatic, hypotension.

In this condition, blood pressure falls dramatically when you stand.

Here are some things you can do to counter low blood pressure: • Take your time standing up.

Move gradually from lying down to sitting to standing.

• Wiggling your toes and flexing your feet before you stand up can help improve blood pressure. So can temporarily squatting and stooping forward. These maneuvers can improve your pressure because they push blood that’s pooled in your legs back up to the

heart. As a result, the heart has more blood to pump to the brain.

Once you’re standing, crossing and tensing your legs may improve blood flow, for the same reason.

• Review your medications with your doctor and perhaps make a change. Your doctor may be able to substitute a different drug for one that is affecting your blood pressure.

• Increase your fluid intake.

When you don’t drink enough fluid, the volume of blood decreases and blood pressure may drop.

• Consider increasing your salt intake. This may help prevent fluid loss and increase blood volume.

But check with your doctor before you decide to try this.

• Drink coffee. Caffeine boosts blood pressure.

• Exercise more. Orthostatic hypotension sometimes goes away when people improve their cardiovascular fitness.

In most cases, low blood pressure with bothersome symptoms will respond to these simple measures.

It’s hard to please everyone Dr. Wallace: I’m 19, and so is my husband, and we have a 3-monthold daughter. We’re happily married and thrilled to be parents.

He works in construction for his brother’s company. He’s a very hard worker and earns a good salary, so I don’t have to be employed, and that allows me to be a full-time mother.

I like that, and so do my parents and my husband.

My husband works 10 hours a day, six days a week. On Sundays, we go to church in the morning and just stay at home the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying our daughter. But this makes my mother mad because she thinks we should be spending time at her house. She also thinks we’re trying to avoid her and being anti-family.

We live about 30 miles from my parents, and at least once a month we spend a Sunday evening at their house and we do the same for his parents.

But my mother doesn’t think that’s enough.

Please give me your thoughts on this. My mother is a faithful reader of your column.

Your husband and daughter are now the members of the prime family in your life, and your first responsibility is to them. Your extended family, especially your parents, remains important, of course, but your relationship with them has changed.

I think my aunt is just making this up because her daughter has been in a lot of trouble and saying that she’s bulimic is a way of excusing her behavior. Please tell me my cousin couldn’t be bulimic. – Sheila, New York City, New York Dear Sheila: It’s possible your cousin is bulimic. You’re confusing bulimia with anorexia, which is another serious eating disorder. Anorexia is defined as voluntary starvation resulting in a minimum weight loss of 15 percent. Bulimics, on the other hand, will habitually gorge themselves, and then induce vomiting to eliminate the food. While anorexics become emaciated, bulimics usually maintain a normal weight or are even a tad heavier.

In this deal, though, the key word is “option.” Which option should South choose? He is in three no-trump. West leads the heart jack and East plays his seven. How should South continue?

West has a textbook weak two-bid, North has a textbook takeout double, and South has a clearcut jump to three no-trump.

It is just a pity that the contract isn’t laydown. South has only eight winners: four spades, one heart (trick one) and three diamonds. He has to establish a club trick, but that will involve losing the lead twice and will give the defenders a chance to run the heart suit.

If West has a high club, the contract is unmakable. So South must assume that East has the club ace and king. However, if declarer takes the first trick and immediately plays a club, East will get in and return his second heart. Then South will go down three, losing five hearts and two clubs.

South has another option at trick one: Let West take the trick.

Now the contract makes; declarer will lose only two hearts and two clubs.

You will often have two options at the bridge table, whether in the bidding or play. Analyze both and hopefully you will realize that one is better than the other.
