editorial@kcchronicle.com Darius Grigaliunas is an international businessman, 2004 Olympian and devoted family man, with heartfelt roots in St. Charles. He always is challenging himself – pushing himself to achieve more and make a positive impact on the world.

Grigaliunas’ parents immigrated to the United States from Lithuania right before he was born.

“I was born at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in 1977, and then my family moved to St. Charles,” he said.

His first trip to Lithuania was in 2001. “While I did know some of the language, those early trips exposed me to a whole new exciting world,” he said.

Grigaliunas explained why he chose to compete in the Olympics representing Lithuania: “My original path was to bring sponsorship and USA Swimming training elements to Lithuania to help the team.”

He was surprised that he was able to develop while helping out.

“I never thought as I grew into my 20s that I would continue to become faster,” he said. “While I was successful in bringing sponsorship to swimmers in need of support,

Because of his work and involvement in the communi-

ty, Grigaliunas is a recipient of the Kane County Chronicle’s Best Under 40 honor.

Before competing in the Olympics, Grigaliunas was already a savvy businessman.

He owns multiple businesses, including some real estate in downtown St. Charles.

“My current projects consist of a classic car dealership in St. Charles named Baltria Vintage Auto Gallery and a restaurant and family park with car museum in Europe named Baltria Skardis,” he said.

His ventures in the U.S. and Lithuania continue to expand.

He made a promise to his trainer that if he made it to the Olympics that he would hook him up with a good location for his business, he said.

True to his word, his trainer moved into one of Grigaliunas’ buildings. Grigaliunas was sensitive to the economic downturn a few years later and fixed the rental rates for

editorial@kcchronicle.com It wasn’t that long ago that Meagan Schoenrock graduated from college and was only beginning her career as a graphic designer. All appeared to be right in her world, until her marketing agency decided to close.

Suddenly, Schoenrock was unemployed and seemingly all alone.

“The company closed up, so I became a freelancer, but I had no idea of how to run my own business,” she said.

“I really would’ve loved to have something like 25N Coworking for support, but I didn’t. So, now it’s interesting because I can relate to so many people here.”

Grigaliunas explained his inspiration for helping out: “As business owners and leaders of our community, we have great responsibility.

At the time, my hometown started looking very vacant.

Having multiple downtown commercial units, it was important for me to recruit and work together with my renters to create more downtown business.

“My inspiration came from 30 years of driving down Main Street and loving my community and the relationships I have made along the way. Now, things are looking better. That does not mean we relax; it means we work even

harder to continue making smart decisions and grow.”

Grigaliunas reflected on his legacy. “[Thomas] Edison said, ‘If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves,’ ” he said. “I have a great internal struggle to live up to my standards and ‘astound’ myself. But that struggle keeps my motor running past empty when trying to reach my relationship, classroom, swimming or business goals.

“My hope is I leave a great wake consisting of a loving family that owns a successful company, and many people that have prospered from their relationship with the company or myself. And as I grow and learn, I hope to transition into a life of politics or teaching in my later years, so I may continue to work with people and further expand that wake.”

ORTH AURORA – Toddler Calvin Hummel excitedly crawled around the living room of his North Aurora home, his energy masking the fact that the 18-month-old is in need of a life-saving kidney transplant.

In January, he was diagnosed with infantile nephrotic syndrome, a rare kidney disorder. Doctors have recommended a life-saving kidney transplant.

“By the first week in March, he was down to hardly any kidney function,” said his mother, Heidi Hummel.

“It hit hard, and it hit fast.”

His kidneys were removed in April to prevent the chance of cancerous tumors forming, she said. He now has to have dialysis on a regular basis.

Kidneys remove waste products from the blood and regulate the body’s water fluid levels. His dialysis machine acts as his kidneys,

“It does the job his kidneys normally would,” Hummel said.

Calvin is fed through a feeding tube. Kids with kidney disease frequently don’t have strong appetites, Hummel said, and as a result, Calvin must get most his calories through a feed-

ing tube.

His father, Garrett Hummel, is going through tests to see if he would be a suitable match. Calvin also needs to gain some weight before he can undergo the transplant.

“He needs to be 22 pounds, and right now he is just shy

of 19 pounds,” Heidi Hummel said.

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association is helping to ensure that Calvin receives the kidney transplant he needs. Founded in 1986, the Children’s Organ Transplant Association is a national charity dedicated to helping families of children

and young adults who need life-saving transplants.

Volunteers are raising funds for COTA in honor of Calvin. The goal is to raise $50,000.

“COTA continues to give hope to transplant families due to two noteworthy tenets that set us apart from other fundraising organizations: Transplant patients or families are not charged for COTA services, and every dollar contributed in honor of COTA patients is used for transplant-related expenses,” Kim Carter Parker, director of communications for the association, wrote in an email.

Calvin’s disease has impacted his whole family. Heidi Hummel, who is a sixth-grade teacher, in March started taking a yearlong absence from her job to care for Calvin.

GENEVA – Acting as the Committee of the Whole, Geneva aldermen unanimously recommended the city buy replacement equipment to treat the city’s water at a cost of $138,225.

The city has four reverse osmosis membrane units in its water treatment plant, officials said, and membranes in one of the units is reaching the end of its useful life.

Officials said the membranes have a lifespan of five to seven years and the one to be replaced is no longer capable of filtering out the required amount of minerals and radium from the raw water.

Superintendent of Water and Wastewater Robert VanGyseghem asked aldermen to buy the equipment without going to bid, and to buy direct from a factory at the same price as the membranes replaced last year.

Staff recommended to allow the purchase without bidding from Dow Water and Process Solutions in Edina, Minnesota.

The city council will take final action on the recommendation.

The city’s $24 million water treatment plant was completed in 2008, financed primarily with low-interest loans through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, according to the city’s website, www.geneva. il.us.

She is hopeful Calvin soon will receive a new kidney.

“He’s doing pretty well on dialysis,” Heidi Hummel said.

“Without having kidneys, he needs pretty frequent blood transfusions, which isn’t a great thing. With every blood transfusion, he builds up antibodies that could then reject a future kidney. And

there’s other complications that come along with dialysis.

So the sooner we can have the transplant done, the greater his quality of life will be.”

After he receives the new kidney, the chances of him living a happy, healthy life are good, she said. And she is amazed at how cheerful he is in the face of his severe health problems.

“Despite everything that is going on, he is extraordinarly happy,” Heidi Hummel said.

“To him, going to dialysis four days a week is just normal. He doesn’t know that it’s not what every other 11/2-yearold does.”

Police officers at about 4:39 p.m. Monday responded to the Verizon store, 2700 E. Main St., St. Charles, for the robbery, according to a news release.

An employee reported a vehicle with three occupants driving by the store slowly, the release states. Based on recent reports of similar armed robberies, they called 911.

The vehicle was described as a dark-colored Dodge Durango but was gone before officers arrived, according to the release. Investigators will look to determine if that vehicle was related to the incident at the Verizon store, the release stated.

Many of the clever toys and accessories for children are just updated versions of very old things. The pacifier, now made of soft plastic, is an inexpensive idea that came from the silver and coral pacifier and teether of the 18th century. Dolls date back to the cavemen. Highchairs were in use in the 19th century, but they would have failed the safety tests given today. And antique cribs usually have bars that are too far apart and paint that contains lead, making them so unsafe you can’t sell them to be used by children.

But some antique cradles are bought to hold dolls, and sharp tin toys are kept high on a shelf as decorations. In February 2015, an early wooden baby tender was sold by Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati. The 15 spindles are shaped like those used on Windsor chairs. It was originally painted red, then later painted with a grain finish.

There is a built-in seat and a tray so the child could walk, sit or play in the baby tender. The unusual piece sold for $780 and will be displayed but not used by a 21st-century baby. *** Q: I own a matching set of chest of drawers and vanity with an adjustable mirror made by the Keystone Furniture Co. of Williamsport, Pa. They are Queen Ann style and are made of oak, black walnut and maple. Both need refinishing but are in nice condition otherwise. The chest was painted in the past, and I removed most of the finish from all but three drawers. How much is this set worth “as is,” as compared to being refinished?

Refinishing it won’t lower the price. Since you’ve already started restoring the finish on the chest, you should finish the job. It will look better and may be sold for a higher price.

There is much discussion about refinishing museum-quality pieces. American 18th-century furniture can lose as much as 80 percent of its value if it has been refinished, but European furniture that has been refinished or even restored does not lose much value as long as the work was well done. *** Q: I inherited a set of Bavarian china from my aunt. It’s white with gold trim and is marked “Hutschenreuther, Selb,” “Pasco” and “The Brighton.”

My favorite piece is a 13-inch round platter. Can you tell me its worth and age?

A: Your platter was made by Hutschenreuther, a company founded in Hohenburg, Bavaria, in 1814. A factory in Selb, Germany, was established in 1857. “Pasco” is the mark of Paul A. Straub & Co. of New York City, an importer in business from

A: Normandie was made by the Federal Glass Co. from 1933 to 1940.

It was available in amber, crystal (clear), pink and spring green. It also was made in an iridescent marigold color, collected as carnival glass and called “Bouquet and Lattice.” Sets of dinnerware aren’t selling well, and Depression-glass prices are down.

A: Deutsch Piekar is the German name for Piekary Slaskie, a city in Poland. When a plague broke out in 1676, religious pilgrims came to pray before a painting of the Virgin Mary in Piekary. Villagers promised to make the pilgrimage every year to give thanks for the miracle. The original painting was moved to another city

for safekeeping, and a replica hung in Piekary in 1702. That painting is also considered miraculous, and religious pilgrims come to the city to see it.

A: Wernicke bookcases were patented in the 1890s by Otto Wernicke, who started the Wernicke Co. in 1893 in Minneapolis and moved it to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1897. His company was bought by the Globe Co. of Cincinnati in 1899, and the company name became Globe-Wernicke, but that lasted only a few years. In 1904, Otto Wernicke left Globe-Wernicke and acquired Fred Macey Co. of Grand Rapids. The company name became Macey-Wernicke, and in 1908, Macey Co. Don’t let lobbyists decide what your children eat at school The WASHINGTON POST Five years ago, Congress brought some healthfulness to the National School Lunch Program, which spends more than $10 billion a year to feed about 30 million K-12 students.

The law is up for renewal this month, and the School Lunch Industrial Complex is trying to make it less healthful again.

Its arguments in favor of lowering nutritional quality for the nation’s children don’t add up, and Congress should reject them.

The overhaul five years ago favored whole grains over heavily processed carbohydrates, less salt, and a minimum serving of fruits or vegetables per meal. It limited what schools could sell in vending machines and à la carte lines, preventing schools from circumventing the rules by allowing fast-food junk – often from national chains – to be sold right outside the cafeteria.

These rules weren’t thrown together willy-nilly by vegan activists; they were developed carefully after an independent expert review at the Institute of Medicine.

And school lunches have gotten healthier. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found last month that the number of schools offering two or more fruits and vegetables in their meals has shot up. Nearly one-third of schools now have salad bars. But the school lunch lobby has been waging a rear-guard action ever since the rules started to phase in.

It fought to continue counting tomato paste as a vegetable.

It fought against rules that discouraged feeding children too many starchy potatoes.

The lobby’s current demands include curtailing the wholegrain and sodium requirements and loosening the rule that children must take fruits or vegetables with their meals.

The lobbyists claim that the regulations promote waste because vegetables get discarded, that some healthy-enough dishes have been ruled unacceptable and that the rules will become even more onerous in coming years.

Much of the “evidence” is anecdotal, but the few credible studies offer a mixed picture. One suggested that students do throw more out but also are eating more fruits and vegetables. Another found that waste has decreased. A third found that students taking vegetables are eating significantly larger amounts of them and that more students are consuming fruit.

Generally, school cafeterias are expected to be self-supporting, which led many of them to offer junk food. With healthier meals on offer, they worry that fewer students ineligible for free or reduced-cost lunches are buying cafeteria food, reducing revenue. But this is no excuse to skimp on health. Wealthier families can send their children to school with junk in a paper bag if they like, but that’s no reason for the government to relax its demands. The Agriculture Department is offering cafeterias guidance and funding to make healthy meals more appetizing. That, not attacking the fair request that they feed students better food, should be their focus.

If lawmakers worry that cafeterias can’t meet federal standards under current budget constraints, they should raise the federal reimbursement for school lunches rather than go back to meals more likely to induce obesity and heart problems.

The musical accompaniment inadvertently augmented the drama on and off the court. Yes, there were both kinds in the Royals’ 6-1 nonconference victory.

Kaneland earned its lone win at No. 1 doubles, as juniors Lauren Karolewicz and Marley Schultz recovered from a late slump to defeat Rosary’s Lizzie Graft and Angela Dassis, 6-4, 0-6 (13-11). The 6-foot-1 Karolewicz leapt for an overhead smash of a shot at the net for the final point of the tiebreaker.

“It’s really nice,” Karolewicz said. “This is the only reason why I like being tall.”

A few moments later, Rosary senior Rebecca Bens, who teamed with her twin sister, Natalie, to roll, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles, received a choreographed invitation to West Aurora’s homecoming.

Her friend presented a poster he littered with tennis puns, including “love.” The real magic words, however, were “set a date.”

With just a handful of matches still in play, the rest of the Royals gazed back toward Rebecca Bens in unison, offering their congratulations.

“I love our team,” said Rebecca Bens, of St. Charles.

“We’re very close.”

No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles proved to be the lone matches to share the latter trait. Karolewicz and Schultz trailed, 9-3, in the first-to-10 tiebreak, to boot.

“I guess we just found the drive in ourselves,” Schultz said. “When we were down … we had just been, like, ‘(Let’s go).’ Then we started hitting shots, and the ones to the net were really going in. And then we were like, ‘OK, we can really do this.’ ” Both players beamed about the accomplishment of

“I tried to attack my serve and get the angles, and then when there were open shots, I tried to get the angles and push her back,” Maria Goheen said. “Try to move in.”

Rosary and Kaneland both competed at Saturday’s Waubonsie Valley Invitational, but meetings between the schools in any bracket were scarce.

The programs are wellversed, anyway, considering

the history Larsen and longtime Royals counterpart John Tsang share at their respective schools.

“It’s always good-spirited play,” Tsang said, “so we really enjoy the sportsmanship.”

For the homestretch, anyway, those athletes whose matches still were being contested early Monday evening appreciated some background noise, too.

If only all overhead volleys could come equipped with real-life booming sounds.

NOTEWORTHY Defense also shines for Spartans

Surely what stuck out Friday night for St. Francis was the fact that its offense could not be stopped in its Chicago Catholic Green opener at Marmion.

But something that might have gone unnoticed was the defensive effort by St. Francis in a 53-7 rout.

Marmion visited the end zone just once while collecting 268 yards of total offense. While that yardage number doesn’t completely pop out as overly stingy, the Spartans just would not let Marmion into the end zone, aside from one 14-yard scamper late in the first half.

“Once they got their feet wet, they really did a great job,” Spartans coach Mike Fitzgerald said of the defense. “I’m just really proud of the effort they gave and their discipline in terms of reading their keys and doing what they were coached to do. We had to match (Marmion’s) physicality and I felt like we did that. They bent at times but they didn’t break and that’s what matters.”

After taking an early 7-0 lead, Marmion fumbled its first play, which was recovered by St. Francis and converted into a touchdown on the following play.

Marmion used three quarterbacks in the loss, and the Spartans allowed them to complete just 6 of 14 passes

for 81 yards with an interception while sacking the quarterback five times. Two big bodies that led the way defensively for St. Francis were Brett Whelton (nine tackles) and Greg Bogdanski (eight tackles, three assists).

Spartans’ defensive back Dan Bos scored his second return touchdown of the season, recovering a fumbled punt and racing 16 yards to the end zone.

Starting running back Will Purdom, who scored three touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball, got a good view from his defensive back spot.

“The defense was just great (Friday),” Purdom said. “We had the fumble right from the get-go and had some other big stops along the way. (Marmion) is a good running team and are tough to stop, but I think we did a pretty good job tonight.”

Batavia not worried about Garrett

Coach Dennis Piron and the Batavia football staff made a decision to keep starting running back Zach Garrett out of Friday’s game with Larkin.

Piron said that Garrett was “still a little banged up” from the team’s hard-fought home win over South Elgin in Week 2.

Also the fact that it had rained Friday during the day and the “field conditions were a little rough” impacted the team’s

decision.

Piron said he fully expects his senior running back in uniform Friday night as the Bulldogs host Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival St. Charles East.

It would be quite the boost if Garrett is able to go, as he scored six touchdowns and rushed for 254 yards in the first two weeks of the season.

Newburger still waiting

Burlington Central coach Jason Newburger had to wait for the third week in a row for the first win of his debut season, as the Rockets fell, 22-12, at North Boone on Friday night.

BC, now 0-3, has been struggling to find offense for most of the season.

The Rockets are scoring an average of nine points per game while allowing an average of 25 points a game.

The road doesn’t get much easier for the Rockets as they will take on a couple of 1-2 Big Northern Conference East opponents in the next two weeks, hosting Harvard and visiting Genoa-Kingston. Conference opponents Marengo, Richmond-Burton and Johnsburg – all of which have started 3-0 – await after that.

HITTING REWIND Kaneland was looking at its second straight disappointing loss in Week 3, trailing by 17 points in the second half against Rich Central. But the Knights weren’t going to lay down. In fact, Kaneland scored 28 unanswered points and was able to hold off Rich Central to pick up the 4236 win and improve to 2-1.

COMING ATTRACTION The first of the all-Tri-Cities matchups will take place in Week 4. St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Batavia and Geneva each won comfortably in Week 3 and will head into this week on a high note. Local teams use invite to ‘keep getting better’

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Many of the local teams at the Mary Carlson Girls Tennis Classic on Saturday at St. Charles East High School expected to have some bumps in the road.

With the second weekend in September usually yielding the retakes of the ACT for many seniors, along with the host Saints having their homecoming Saturday night, not many teams were at full strength.

But nonetheless, that did not stop all teams from taking the court with a chance to give some players experience they might not have gotten until this point in the season.

“This weekend is one that usually tends to be crazy,” Batavia coach Brad Nelson said. “We, like most teams, had to shift some things around today to make everything work, but overall I’m happy that some girls got the experience and I’m pleased with the effort that the girls gave today.”

Batavia did not get the results it wanted from the meet, nor did the host Saints, but it wasn’t really about that for either team.

East coach Matt Bulman said he expected Classic winner Naperville Central would be extremely strong and most teams would have their work cut out for them.

Instead of worrying about the scoreboard or standings, Bulman wanted his group to work on improving themselves more than anything.

“The expectations today were just to be competitive,” Bulman said. “We really didn’t know what to expect, other than Naperville Central being strong, just because a lot of teams were down from the ACT. But from there I just wanted the girls to keep getting better and see how they can improve from a day like today.”

One local school that could be happy with its finish was Geneva. The Vikings, led by junior Grace Krueger’s second-place finish at No. 1 singles, finished third overall as

Krueger beat players from both Naperville Central (6-2, 6-3) and Wheaton North (7-5, 6-3), before falling in the championship match to Wheaton Warrenville South freshman Samantha Choi, 6-0, 6-0.

Overall, Krueger said she was happy with her performance, saying there wasn’t a whole lot she could do come the final match.

“She’s a really, really good player,” Krueger said of Choi.

“It was tough to do much against her, but I’m happy I won my first two matches and think as a team we can definitely build on this and try to win some matches heading toward conference.”

Geneva also got a secondplace finish out of its No. 3 doubles pair of Jaden Ciesielski and Ashley King.

Bulman also got a strong finish from his No. 1 doubles pair of Emily Sullivan and Paige Ackermann. The senior

The Bulldogs will get a look at both the North Stars and Bulman’s Saints in Upstate Eight Conference River Division contests this coming week.

DeKALB – Murray State did everything it could to stop the run against Northern Illinois.

Instead, Huskies quarterback Drew Hare punished the Racers through the air in a 5726 victory on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Huskie Stadium.

With the Racers stacking defensive players inside the box to stop the run, Hare finished 29 for 38 for 358 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

“They had like nine dudes [in the box], and it’s tough to run against nine when you only have seven to block, so they’re playing with a couple more,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said. “Drew was doing a good job with his legs early, and we found some good sets – if they’re going to sell out to stop the run like that, you’re going to be able to throw it. That’s Football 101.”

Hare’s second consecutive game with 300 yards passing – he threw for a career-high 360 in a season-opening win against UNLV – gives the junior from O’Fallon, Missouri, an accomplishment that former Northern Illinois quarterbacks Jordan Lynch and Chandler Harnish couldn’t make. He became the first Huskies quarterback to throw for 300 in back-to-back games in at least 15 years and possibly since 1963.

Hare had another strong game targeting junior wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who had eight catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns – giving him 17 receptions for 357 yards on the season. However, Hare also connected with nine dif-

ferent receivers on the day.

Hare found sophomore tight end Shane Wimann twice for touchdowns near the goalline.

While Murray State coach Mitch Stewart said the Racers were familiar with Hare’s skills, he was surprised at the stature of the 6-foot-1, 218-pound quarterback.

“We knew he was what he was off of film. I tell you what we didn’t know was how big that sucker is. He’s a big kid.

He looks like a monster when he’s standing on the field,” Stewart said. “We knew if he started to let that ball loose and take big chunks of yardage, we’d be in trouble.”

Perhaps the most impressive throw of the day for Hare came midway through the third quarter. On the drive after Hare led the Huskies to a touchdown in 37 seconds to start the second half – capped by a 55-yard pass to Golladay – the quarterback found Golladay again, this time stepping into the throw that resulted in a violent hit from a Murray State defender.

The result was a 33-yard touchdown by Golladay to put the Huskies ahead, 33-16.

“I saw the coverage and I liked the coverage for Kenny and I put a ball up there,” Hare said. “Then I got it off and got hit.”

Hare was slow to get up after the hit, but returned for the Huskies next drive.

Last season, the most yards Hare threw in a game was 285 in a 48-34 win over UNLV in the third contest of the year.

Hare will get the biggest challenge of the season next week, when the Huskies travel to No. 1 Ohio State at 2:30 p.m.

Saturday in a game that will be broadcast on ABC.

Bears re-sign outside linebacker Acho, place DE Washington on IR

kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears re-signed outside linebacker Sam Acho on Monday and placed defensive end Cornelius Washington on injured reserve.

Acho had missed the last half of the preseason and had yet to practice because of an illness before Sam Acho being released Saturday. By bringing Acho – a vested veteran with four years in the league – back after Week 1, the Bears don’t have to guarantee him his entire 2015 salary.

In the preseason before he became ill, Acho had five tackles, two sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. He was also a member of the kick coverage units. Acho played the first four seasons of his career for the Cardinals, this season’s Week 2 Bears opponent. He has 124 career tackles and 13 sacks – seven in his rookie season in 2011.

Washington played one snap on defense Sunday and was a core member of the special teams units but left the game with a right quad injury.

The Bears currently have only four defensive linemen on the active roster. They do have Brandon Dunn and Terry Williams on the practice

squad.

Third-down improvements:

At the same time he praised the Bears’ offense for a 11-for17 clip on third down, coach John Fox acknowledged that, after looking at the tape, the defense struggled on the crucial down.

The Packers were 6 for 10 in their 31-23 win, but converted three third downs and one fourth during a long touchdown drive that gave them the eight-point lead at the start of the fourth.

“There’s plenty of room for improvement [on defense],” Fox said Monday.

“As good as we were on offense on third down, we didn’t do as well defensively.

I think a positive one was the 3-and-out on the first series of the game.”

The Bears were in their sub packages for 55 of the 60 plays, and Fox said the Packers’ up-tempo play-calling and proclivity to spread things out kept Lamarr Houston sidelined most of the game. Houston played only four snaps.

Reliving the pick: Looking back at Clay Matthews’ interception, Fox said Jay Cutler and the offense could be “a little more aware of where he is as far as what side of the field we’re working to.”

“I think Jay was right in the way he was looking at his progression,” Fox said. “He could have made a different decision. All in all, I thought it was a heck of a play on [Matthews’] part.”

Headache ‘diary’ can help doctor find cause of pain Dear Doctor K: I’ve made an appointment to see a doctor because of my frequent headaches. What is likely to happen at the appointment?

Dear Reader: If your headaches are severe, occur often or are unresponsive to nonprescription pain relievers, it makes sense to see your doctor. He or she will try to determine the causes of your headaches and design a treatment plan.

Your appointment is likely to begin with a series of questions about your headaches. If you think about your answers to these questions in advance of the visit, it will help both you and your doctor. For example: • When did your headaches begin? At what age?

• Does anything seem to trigger the headaches: particular foods, particular odors, stress, particular times of the day or the week?

• How often do they occur?

• How long do they last?

• Where is the pain located when the headache starts? Does the pain travel to other parts of the head as the headache takes hold?

• How severe is the pain?

The doctor will also perform a physical exam. This will include a blood pressure check and a careful look inside your eyes.

Increased pressure in the head

can be a sign of a brain tumor.

This can cause swelling of the optic nerve, and the eye exam can reveal such swelling. Tension headaches can cause spasms in the neck and shoulder muscles and tender areas at the back of the head. Your doctor will check for these.

Most people do not need additional testing. No tests are needed for obvious tension or migraine headaches, for example. But if your headaches have gotten worse, or if you have pain that occurs consistently in the same location – which could result from an underlying medical condition – your doctor may order additional tests.

To exclude more serious causes, your doctor may perform a computed tomography (CT) scan or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. These procedures let your doctor get a good look at your brain. But rest assured, the vast majority of headaches do not have serious causes.

With dermabrasion, the skin is lightly sanded by a machine.

With chemical peeling, different chemicals are used to peel away upper skin layers, which include the scars.

In the fibrin foam method, blood is drawn from the arm, and fibrin (blood protein) is extracted. The fibrin is then injected beneath the acne scar, separating the squeezed layers and filling the scar depression.

You must remember that none of the processes can give you a total cure, but a 50 percent to 70 percent improvement can be expected. It is imperative that you make an appointment with a dermatologist.

And remember, the scars are nothing compared to the depth of your character.

At the bridge table, good communication between defenders will save a lot of points and, if there are stakes, money.

Today’s deal highlights one critical communication technique. How should the defenders card to defeat three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest club?

North used a textbook transfer sequence, bidding two hearts then three no-trump to show exactly five spades and game-going strength.

South, with only a doubleton spade, had an easy pass.

Declarer starts with eight tricks: one spade, one heart, five diamonds and one club (given that the defenders will be attacking that suit). If the spade finesse is winning, there will be overtricks, but if it is losing, South could concede one spade and four clubs.

After West leads the club five, East wins with his ace – third hand high.

Then, with two cards left, he returns the club nine, starting a high-low with a remaining doubleton.

South will put up his queen, but West should realize that if his partner had begun with A-J-9-3 of clubs, he would have led back the three (low from a remaining odd number), not the nine. So now West must resist the temptation to win the trick. He must follow suit with his four, to keep communication with his partner.

Then, when East gets in with his spade king, he leads his last club for down one.

Public notice is hereby given that, by Ordinance adopted on the 27th day of August, 2015, the Board of Trustees of the Geneva Public Library District ordained to levy an additional tax of .02% of the value of all the taxable property in the District, as equalized or assessed by the Department of Local Government Affairs, for the purchase of sites and buildings, for construction and equipment of buildings, for the rental of buildings required for library purposes, and for maintenance, repairs r and alterations of library buildings and equipment, said tax levy to be effective for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2015 and ending June 30, 2016. The question of the adoption of said Ordinance shall be submitted to the electors of the District if a petition is filed with the District signed by 2,125 voters asking that the question of levying such .02% tax be submitted to the electors of the District. Said petition must be filed within 30 days after publication of this notice. The next date on which a prospective referendum could be held is March 15, 2016.
