Busy bustle at county’s monthly free electronic recycling event

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The double row of cars and vans lined up and moved ahead slowly on Saturday, each loaded with electronics to be disposed of for recycling.

Among those in the vehicles were Cathy Blanton of Aurora and Reg Wnek of St. Charles.

“I’ve got some small electronics from my son,” Wnek said.

At the destination end of the line, 40-plus large boxes were laid end to end as a contingent of workers from an electronic waste collection service dumped old TVs, computers, keyboards, microwaves, stereos, boom boxes and other items from back seats and trunks.

Saturday was the latest of Kane County’s free monthly electronics recycling events, held the second Saturday of each month at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, near the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s office and branch court.

“We receive an average of 70,000 pounds of electronics per month – four to five semitrucks full,” Jarland said. “But we’ve had as high as 133, 500 pounds in June 2014. The total amount from the nine collection events held this year so far is just over 650,000 pounds. We will hit a million by the end of the year.”

The county contracts with eWorks Electronics Services, an R2 certified electronics recycler.

The county also does

book recycling at the same time, taking in 5,000 to 10,000 pounds a month, Jarland said.

“This year so far we have collected over 60,000 pounds total,” Jarland said. “About 10 percent to15 percent are reused and the rest are recycled.

Pacesetter Books provides this service for the county.”

At this particular event, the county also accepted waste latex paint and offered a document shredding service.

Next month’s collection will be on Oct. 11.

Architect Cantrell dies in Arizona at 93 Created 1st dirt road that became Randall Road

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Robert J. Cantrell, the architect whose 1949 dirt road eventually became Randall Road, died Aug. 18 in an assisted living facility in Arizona of congestive heart failure.

Cantrell, an architect who designed several commercial buildings, including the former State Bank on the east side of the Fox River and the Blue Goose building – which has since been torn down – lived in St. Charles Township from 1949 to 1970, his daughter Janet Stamm said.

“We really aren’t sad he died, but we are celebrating his life – he was a great guy,” Stamm of Gilbert, Arizona, said. “Everywhere he lived – including St. Charles those 21 years – he participated as fully as he could outside of his job to contribute to the good of his communities. I admired him all all my life, and I’m very proud of him, very proud to be his daughter.”

Cantrell bought 40 acres of forested land about a mile north of Dean Street and used a tractor to put in that first dirt road and then graded it, Stamm said.

“It was on the county plans to put in and develop Randall Road, but when he bought the property in 1949, they had not even begun joining the pieces,” Stamm said. “He had to take an old tractor and get something in there, so he could begin work on his own property.”

He subdivided the property and called it Timber Valley, now at the intersection of Randall and Thorn Tree Road in St. Charles Township, Stamm said.

“There is an old picture of him and my mom standing in front of a sign, ‘Lots for Sale,’ about 1950,” Stamm said. “St. Charles was a small town then, a bedroom community.

Cantrell also served on the St. Charles School District 303 Board in the 1960s, Stamm said. She said she graduated from St. Charles High School in 1967.

Cantrell grew up in Kansas and northern Texas, beginning his career as an architect and draftsman designing training airfields there and in New Mexico. In 1943, he moved to Chicago and worked at the metallurgical lab at the University of Chicago, part of the The Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb, according to an obituary from the family.

Cantrell was project manager for the design and construction of the original McCormick Place in Chicago.

He owned of a private architectural practice in St. Charles from 1960 to 1970; then he was vice president and construction manager for the New York firm of McKee, Burger & Mansueto from 1970 to 1983.

After he retired, Cantrell began the Recovering from Homelessness Program with a nonprofit organization, Whittier Area First Day Coalition, in Whittier, California, a Los Angeles suburb, also according to the obituary. The program provides assistance and support to people trying to restore their lives after having been homeless.

Stamm said contributions in her father’s memory may be made to Whittier’s First Day, P.O. Box 5498, Whittier, CA 90607.

Cantrell also is survived by two other daughters, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Civil War comes to life in Batavia Encampment part of Batavia Depot Museum birthday celebration

As they were viewing the different demonstrations and exhibits at the museum, Pres-

ident Abraham Lincoln, as played by actor Max Daniels, met with them and recited his best-known speech, the Gettysburg Address.

“I never thought I would hear President Lincoln saying the Gettysburg Address,” said Katie Masini, who was at the Civil War encampment with her children and husband.

Sunday’s activities wrapped up the birthday cel-

ebration, which kicked off Wednesday with a program on the role of railroads in the Civil War. The depot, which dates back to 1854, originally was at the southeast corner of Van Buren and Webster streets and was moved to its current location at 155 Houston St. in October 1973 and turned into a museum.

Daniels has been por traying Lincoln for about 27 years. His, wife, Donna, por-

trays Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.

“It is a way to teach history,” Max Daniels said. “I always refer to the 1860s as our teenage years. We almost killed ourselves as a nation.”

And he said the role has given him perspective.

“It gives me hope and perspective that we are a great nation,” Daniels said. “I’m excited that I am an American.”

Civil War buff Natalie

Cruse of Batavia watched with interest as a demonstration on medical techniques was shown as part of the Civil War encampment.

“I think they did very well,” Cruse said. “They were pretty accurate, from what I’ve read.”

Cruse believes one can learn a lot from the Civil War. “It was a very interesting time to live with very interesting issues,” she said.

Cougars’ nab 2014 Midwest League title

By STEPHANIE METZGER editorial@kcchronicle.com EASTLAKE – The Kane County Cougars held the best record in baseball this season.

Their reward was the 2014 Midwest League title.

The Cougars defeated the Lake County Captains, 7-2, on Saturday to complete a threegame sweep of the Midwest League Championship Series.

Pitching, defense and offense all seemed to click for the Cougars, who outscored their opponent, 17-5, in the series.

“We looked forward to that dog pile,” Cougars first baseman Jacob Rogers said of the Cougars’ title celebration. “Not many of us had that in college ball, so dogpiling like that and celebrating with our boys is great. We’re like a family out there.”

The Captains took the ear-

ly lead as Indians first-round draft pick Clint Frazier doubled home Ivan Castillo, but the Cougars crafted a strong rebuttal.

Rogers drew a lead-off walk and came around to score on a double by shortstop Carlos Penalver, but the big blow occurred in the third inning.

Jeimer Candelario sent a oneout single to left before Rogers unleashed his 17th home run of the season for the 3-1 lead.

Rogers, who went 3 for 4 and scored twice, said he sat on a fastball offering from Captains starter Anderson Polanco.

“I figured he was trying to get ahead, so I just wanted to look for a fastball. He got it over the plate and I put a good swing on it,” Rogers said.

Rogers, the Cubs’ 40th round pick in 2012, hit .268 with a team-leading 16 home runs during the regular season. He also credited his team’s arms,

including Daury Torrez, who received the win and posted a 2.74 ERA through 23 games this season.

“In the first inning, he’s not usually like that,” Rogers noted. “We came back and scored one in the second and just went from there.”

The Kane County staff led the Midwest League with a 2.85 team ERA. Torrez logged the most innings on the Cougars squad with 131.1. Offensively, the team collected a .261 batting average this year, second-best in the league.

The Captains came close in the 4th inning because of a pair of errors by Penalver at short, but Lake County couldn’t capitalize as Dorssys Paulino tapped into a double-play to end the threat.

Kane County chased Polanco from the game in the 5th inning after a pair of one-out

singles. Rogers greeted reliever Robbie Aviles with a hit to center that scored one, and Cael Brockmeyer followed with a single to boost the Cougars to the 4-1 lead.

Three unearned runs tapped the nail in the Captains’ coffin in the top of the sixth inning as third baseman Paul Hendrix committed two errors over the course of three plays. Mistakes were the Captains’ Achilles the entire series as the team committed nine errors through three games, including four in Game 2.

The rest was left in the hands of the Kane County bullpen. Michael Heesch replaced Torrez in the sixth inning and logged three scoreless innings, yielding one run on two hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

Francisco Carrillo made quick work of the ninth as he retired the side in order and tal-

lied two strikeouts to secure the Cougars’ title.

The victory marked Kane County’s first Midwest League title since 2001, a series shortened by the Sept. 11 tragedy.

The Cougars end their season with a 98-49 overall record, going 91-49 during the regular season. Rogers said they hadn’t planned to be the most winning team in all of baseball, but consistent dedication every day paid off.

“It’s not something we really set out to do,” Rogers said. “We set out to just play well every single day and grind. We’ve got a bunch of guys who just want to go out here and do well.”

Left fielder Shawon Dunston echoed Rogers’ sentiments about having a well-rounded team that seemed to play well in all categories.

“That’s all we’ve been doing all year,” Dunston said.

Strong singles boosts Geneva girls tennis to 2nd place

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The wins keep coming, affirming Geneva sophomore Grace K r u e g e r ’ s c h a n g e i n a pproach.

Krueger said she’s been determined to rush to the net more often this season, and her attacking strategy was rewarded again Saturday when Krueger won the No. 2 singles championship at the St. Charles East Invitational.

“It’s more of a mindset because I’ve always had volleys ,but I just couldn’t string them together with my game [in the past],” said Krueger, who remained unbeaten on the season.

Krueger won all three of her tournament matches in straight sets and defeated Batavia’s Kate McClure in the championship match, 6-0, 6-3.

“It was really nice because last year I lost in the semifinals [of the tournament], so it was nice to redeem myself,”

Krueger said.

Krueger’s title highlighted a strong tournament showing for Geneva, which finished second to powerhouse Naperville Central. All four Vikings singles entries finished in the top two of their divisions as Geneva (51 team points) gave Naperville Central (55) a substantial push.

Vikings No. 1 singles standout Kirby Einck advanced to the championship match in the top bracket before falling to defending state champion Tiffany Chen, of Naperville Central, for the second time this season.

“I think that was probably the last time I’ll see her before state,” Einck said. “And I’m OK with that.”

Einck played Chen much more competitively this time, falling 6-2, 6-4. Einck said her forehand down the line in the second set gave Chen “a ton of trouble.”

But Chen flashed her championship pedigree in surging down the stretch to close out

the match.

“I would definitely say beating a player like her or even playing a player like her is more mental than it is physical,” Einck said. “Just being able to get over the fact that, hey, she won state, she’s one of the best players in Illinois.

It’s hard to get over that.

“And playing, you’re like I’ve got to get the balls in but I’ve got to make sure I’m hitting deep balls that she’s not going to attack, but then you overhit it. It’s hard to kind of focus and bring it back.”

Despite the defeat, Einck made a strong impression, including on St. Charles East coach Matt Bulman.

“It’s fun to see an area player playing that well against the returning state champion,” Bulman said.

Elizabeth Prendergast (No. 3 singles) and Ashley King (No. 4 singles) also landed as singles runners-up for the Vikings.

Overall, the tournament’s depth was weakened by the

absence of several players who were taking the ACT on Saturday morning.

Fourth-place Batavia produced the third-place finishers at No. 1 doubles (Julianne Robinson and Sydnee Unterberg) and No. 2 doubles (Holly Smorczewski and Maddie Rea).

Bulman was pleased with Olivia Gapuz. Gapuz took third place at No. 2 singles for the host Saints, who tied Wheaton North for fifth place.

“She’s only a sophomore,” Bulman said. “So that’s the future of our singles program, so I love to see something like that.”

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips she was not offended.

When I answer questions, it is my responsibility to be honest and direct.

As anyone who has read my column knows, I am not always politically correct.

When I saw her statement that she was 60 to 70 pounds overweight – which is obese – and “comfortable in her own skin,” my reaction was alarm.

If she doesn’t become proactive NOW, by the time she’s 35 she could be far heavier.

Everyone knows the many health complications associated with obesity, so I won’t list them.

And while not everyone develops complications, in general, the greater a person’s weight, the greater the LIKELIHOOD of developing them.

While losing weight may be challenging, as I know from personal experience, it’s important to make beneficial lifestyle changes to promote healthy weight, just as it is important to have healthy self-esteem.

That young woman needs to have a frank talk with her doctor about what’s causing her to be so heavy.

I told her that when I talked to her.

I also suggested it might be helpful to consult a nutritionist.

As to my comment about her mother, I strongly suspect what I said is true, and I’ll stand by it until I hear from the woman telling me different.

Dear Abby: Your response to “Offended Daughter,” whose mother didn’t like her lounging in a bikini top at her house because of her weight, was inconsiderate, irresponsible and, frankly, offensive.

You started off well, advising her to consider her mother’s preference because it’s her house, but your second paragraph took a wrong turn.

You used your column to imply she should not feel comfortable in her own skin.

You assumed her doctor thinks she’s unhealthy, knowing nothing about her other than the fact she’s 60 to 70 pounds more than “average.”

You assumed she was “complacent” and her weight is a problem, even though you do not have access to her medical history and are not a physician.

That response serves no purpose other than to fat-shame “Offended Daughter.”

Even if she is unhealthy, if she weighed two or three times what she does now, even if she lies around all day in that bikini eating potato chips and ice cream sundaes, she still deserves respect as a human being.

That would not have worked well against best defense. East-West could have taken one spade and four clubs.

South sees four potential losers: one spade, one diamond and two clubs. To have any chance, he should assume that West has the diamond king (which is more likely than East’s holding a singleton king). But if the finesse is working, declarer needs a hand entry. A heart ruff looks like a candidate, but South also needs heart winners on which to discard club losers. He should win the first trick with dummy’s heart ace, then play the heart queen.

First, assume East covers with his king. South ruffs, draws trumps ending on the board and discards two clubs on the heart J-10. He concedes one spade and one club.

Second, if East does not play his heart king, South pitches a club and continues with the heart jack. If East plays low again, South throws another club. Then – this is tough to spot – he must continue with the heart 10 and jettison his last club. Surprisingly, his hand entry becomes a club ruff.
