CORRECTIONS & CLARIFICATIONS A story that ran on pages 2 and 11 of the Sept. 10 edition of the Kane County Chronicle requires clarification. Of the potential school-closing options for St. Charles School District 303, retrofitting Thompson Middle School, would cost $20 million. That work could be paid with money saved by refinancing loans, a district official said. Closing two elementary schools and Haines and retrofitting and expanding Thompson would cost $45 million.

Pursuing that option likely would include going to referendum, an official said.

Kane County Board seeks to avoid legal battle with coroner

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Board is unwilling to throw good money after bad by engaging in a legal battle with the coroner, Chairman Chris Lauzen said Thursday.

He referenced a past legal battle with former Kane County Circuit Clerk Deborah Seyller that cost the county about $450,000.

“This board won’t do that,” Lauzen said after the Judicial and Public Safety Committee spent about an hour in closed session.

Coroner Rob Russell announced last week he initiated legal action against the auditor over unpaid bills.

The County Board in July approved a resolution authorizing the auditor to withhold approval for payment by the treasurer with any contracts, invoices or other claims projected to exceed a department’s or office’s budget.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick said the coroner’s office is trending about 1 percent over budget with a projected overage of $55,498.

Russell, who reports to the committee monthly, told the group Thursday he had nothing to report, and the committee promptly moved to executive session.

In the hallway during the closed-door discussion, Russell said the matter is in State’s Attorney Joe McMahon’s hands.

“I think it’s clear what the state’s attorney’s position is,” Russell said.

Russell’s letter to board members last week included an opinion from McMahon.

“Therefore, it is this office’s recommendation that all validly-submitted invoices be paid by the county where sufficient funds exists [sic] to cover such amounts,” McMahon wrote. “Kane County Resolution 15-186 does not override statutory authority or obli-

gations of the county of Kane to pay invoices that are authorized by the elected office holder and consistent with the operations of his/her office.”

After Thursday’s closed session, McMahon said he would meet with Russell again and try to resolve the matter “short of litigation.”

Lauzen said he anticipates individual resolutions will come forward next month

about the payment for some bills, such as for linen service.

But, he said, he doesn’t expect his colleagues to approve expenses tied to Russell’s promotional materials.

Russell contends those items were covered by a special fund. Lauzen, however, asserts the fund is restricted to certain expenses, which do not include promotional trinkets.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Former St. Charles Mayor Sue Klinkhamer was busy manning the phones recently at the Norris Recreation Center, answering questions about the programs the center offers.

Klinkhamer, who is part of the center’s front desk staff, started working at the center last year. She works 16 to 20 hours a week.

For Klinkhamer, the job is part of the next chapter of her life after her public service.

After serving their terms, officials move on to other endeavors. For former Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez, that includes baby-sitting his grandchildren. For Sherry Eagle, who was superintendent

of West Aurora School District 129 for 12 years, that means continuing to work in the field of education.

Klinkhamer served two terms as St. Charles mayor and lost in her re-election bid in April 2005 to Don DeWitt.

Klinkhamer said the job at the Norris center has helped her reconnect with the community.

“I see a lot of people I knew when I was the mayor,” Klinkhamer said. “A lot of people still ask me questions, or want my opinions on different things.”

Klinkhamer stayed involved with politics after leaving office. She worked as a federal lobbyist for then-Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and served a stint as district director for U.S. Rep. Bill Fos-

ter.

Klinkhamer said those positions provided a good transition after she left office.

“Losing the election in 2005 was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said.

Perez, who served two terms as sheriff, is spending much of his time these days baby-sitting his granddaughter, Bentlee, who is 2½, and grandson Broc, who is 5 months old.

He shares the baby-sitting duties with his wife, Terrie.

He left office in November 2014.

“When I retired, I traded in my sheriff hat for a grandpa hat,” Perez said. “My goal is to be the best grandpa I can be.

It’s a totally different phase of life. I look forward to moving into this phase of life.”

And he has no regrets about retiring as sheriff.

“When I ran for sheriff, I made the pledge that if I was fortunate to be elected, that my goal was to serve two terms and leave,” Perez said.

“The other goal was to leave the organization in better shape than I found it.”

Eagle served as superintendent of West Aurora School District 129 from 1993 to 2005.

She now is the executive director of the Institute for Collaboration of Aurora University, which was behind the opening of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School on the Aurora University campus. The school serves students in third through eighth grades in the Batavia, East Aurora, Indian Prairie and West Aurora school districts.

Eagle was the district’s only female superintendent in its history to date, an accomplishment she is proud of.

“It shows something to our students that it’s not about the gender or ethnicity of a person, but rather, it’s about the quality of a person that determines their capability to lead in a positive way,” Eagle said.

Eagle has been executive director of the Institute for Collaboration since 2005. She feels a responsibility to make sure students are growing and thriving.

“They are our next generation of our workforce, and the next generation of parents that will be guiding our children,” Eagle said. “We have a strong vested stake here.”

Felt said the families were closely involved in all aspects of the complex development, working with private donors and state and federal officials – as well as the National Park Service, which operates the memorial – to raise money, acquire land, select a design and complete construction.

“Our loved ones left a legacy for all of us,” Felt said, noting the plane, which was traveling 563 mph, was less than 20 minutes flying time from Washington, D.C. “If the Capitol building was destroyed that day, just think how much more devastating an impact that day would have had on our country.”

On Thursday, several hundred people huddled under umbrellas in a heavy, chilly drizzle to officially open the visitors center. Speakers remembered the passengers and crew of Flight 93, who “changed the course of American history,” Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said.

“What do they have to say about my dear, sweet daughter?” she said, her face brightening as the screen filled with photos of Deora Frances Bodley, 20, at her high school graduation, working as a volunteer reading tutor, visiting Paris – an album of a promising young life cut short when four al-Qaida terrorists hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 14 years ago.

Borza was among the family members given an early look at the $26 million Flight 93 National Memorial Visitor Center that opened this week, honoring the legacy of the 9/11 attacks on America and the courage of 40 passengers and crew who fought back against their hijackers, preventing the plane from hitting its presumed target, the U.S. Capitol.

“It’s important to me that the visitor sees what these 40 people took on, to take a stand for freedom, to take the kind of stand that cost their lives,” said Borza, whose daughter was the youngest female passenger on Flight 93. “Maybe there will be some special thing they see about Deora that will inspire them.”

As Americans mark the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, thousands will gather at long-established monuments at Ground Zero in New York, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and at other sites honoring the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history. There follows video of the second plane hitting, the South Tower collapsing, the voice of the late newscaster Peter Jennings saying, “My God.” Display cases are filled with tiny fragments of the plane, bits of metal and wire and electronics, as well as a charred seat belt, a safety instruction card, bent metal spoons and forks, the Oracle employee identification card of passenger Todd Beamer, the New Jersey driver’s license of passenger Colleen Fraser, a Visa card that belonged to one of the hijackers.

At one display, visitors can pick up a phone and listen to some of the 37 calls that were made from Flight 93 that morning, some to 911 and some to family members. Those calls allowed passengers to understand what they faced was not a normal hijacking, and it also allowed them to say goodbye.

“I just wanted to tell you I love you. We’re having a little problem on the plane. I’m totally fine. I just love you more than anything, just know that,” Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas said in a message on her husband’s answering machine.

Passenger Linda Gronlund calls her sister and said: “I just love you, and I just wanted to tell you that. I don’t know if I’m going to get the chance to tell you that again or not.”

Another wall is dedicated to a life-sized photograph of a Boeing 757 cabin, showing the plane as the passengers would have seen it after the hijackers forced them all to the back of the plane. When they decided to rush their attackers, they had to move 100 feet to the front of the plane, down an aisle only 20 inches wide.

to the national monument in Shanksville, to honor Bodley and the passengers who kept 9/11 from becoming even more catastrophic, will find a work still in progress.

The concrete and glass visitors center and museum are finally open, but landscaping and other finishing touches still are underway. Yet another structure, the Tower of Voices, a nearly 100-foot bell tower with 40 chimes, is scheduled to be built in the next two years.

A memorial plaza close to the impact site, in a field that once was a strip mine, was completed in time for the 10th anniversary in 2011. At the time, former president Bill Clinton, visiting the site with former president George W. Bush, expressed frustration with the pace of the project.

Clinton and Bush soon became personally involved, speeding fundraising and development, according to Gordon Felt, president of Families of Flight 93.

“President Clinton and President Bush both came through for us,” said Felt, whose brother, Edward Porter Felt, 41, died in the crash.

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, delivered on another remote Pennsylvania field: “We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.”

Alan Hantman, the former architect of the Capitol, addressed family members in the crowd, noting he was in the U.S. Capitol on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. So, he said, “I’m one of those who was saved by your loved ones.”

Paul Murdoch, the architect of the Flight 93 memorial, said the memorial is designed to highlight the power of the story of Flight 93.

“In its raw severity, we acknowledge their sacrifice.

In its solemn darkness, we acknowledge their loss. In its calm serenity, we offer solace at their final resting place.

And in its monumental scale, we praise their heroic deeds,” Murdoch told the crowd.

The new visitors center and museum is set between two soaring concrete walls that rise 40 feet high, a foot for each of those who died. It is set directly on Flight 93’s flight path, with a black stone walkway indicating the precise route the plane followed. On the valley floor below, a large boulder marks the point of impact, serving almost as a headstone in a place where very few human remains were ever recovered.

The center presents the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as they unfolded that morning. The first display visitors encounter features that morning’s Wall Street Journal, photos of local students entering an elementary school, a diagram showing there were 4,500 planes in the air when Flight 93 took off at 8:42 a.m. from Newark on its way to San Francisco.

The Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District will hold its second pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at Elburn Fire Station 2, 39W950 Hughes Road, Elburn.

For $5 a person – free for children 4 and younger – attendees will receive all-youcan-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice, milk and coffee.

Proceeds from the breakfast will go toward the Elburn Food Pantry and Conley Outreach, said Kelly McCullough, an Elburn firefighter paramedic and one of the event’s organizers.

“We want to make sure [the money] goes out to the community, because the community is a big part of what we do,” McCullough said. “Our goal is to have it every year.”

The breakfast food is usually donated or offered at a discount through various businesses, McCullough said.

About 35 businesses also have donated a variety of raffle items, including hotel night stays, gift cards, White Sox tickets, Kane County Cougars

Russell seeks 2nd term as Kane County coroner

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Coroner Rob Russell’s conflicts with the Kane County Board aren’t stopping him from seeking a second term in office.

“I feel I’m still called to be here,” he said Thursday. “I have not been deterred at all.”

Russell, a Republican, defeated Democrat Tao Martinez in 2012. He campaigned on promises he would restore integrity to an office previously marked by controversy.

In a news release announcing his candidacy for 2016, Russell listed several accomplishments during his first

term, including entombing more than 50 unclaimed cremated remains found on an office shelf; establishing the coroner’s office as a prescription drug drop-off site; and restoring relationships with police, fire officials, hospitals and funeral homes.

His crowning achieveRob Russell ment was achieving national accreditation for the office, the release stated.

“I think most people realize that I’m a worker,” Russell said.

Although the to-do list is shorter than when he first took office, Russell said work remains to be done, and he will continue his efforts if given a chance.

Russell, who has initiated legal action against the auditor over unpaid bills, said he doesn’t think that situation will affect his candidacy.

“I think that those that are rational and look at it from an objective point of view, they can see what I’ve done, and I think they are pleased with the way the office has progressed,” Russell said.

Russell is the first person to publicly announce a bid for coroner in the 2016 election.

River City Church relocated to St. Charles editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – River City Church, formerly of Batavia, has relocated into a permanent home at 3450 Swenson Ave., in St. Charles. It will host a grand opening at 10 a.m. Sunday.

River City has been a portable church, meeting in the Batavia Fine Arts Centre since January 2013.

“Moving into the building is an awesome opportunity for us to reach people we could

not have reached before,” River City Church Family Pastor Dan Dominguez stated in a news release. “We want to take what we are doing well with the kids and make it even better by creating an environment that is welcoming and conducive to encountering God. This location lets us do that.”

To celebrate the move, River City’s grand opening will be open to everyone. It will include games, a time of worship and food.

“It has been great to have a front seat to see how God has been faithful to River City Church,” River City Lead Pastor Damian McCrink stated in the release. “I love seeing people’s lives changed and see them engaged in community.

We have already seen quite a few new people, families and children join us for Sunday services.”

Community and Economic Development Director Rita Tungare stated in the release that the city will do its best to leave as many parking spaces as possible.

“Some spots may be available intermittently throughout the course of the construction,” she stated in the release. “We ask for patience as we proceed with this exciting project.”

Some diagonal street spots on the east side of First Street and the existing surface lot along the river’s west bank between Illinois and Main streets won’t be accessible once construction fencing is installed, the release states.

New parking will, however, be available north of the project site, where an East Plaza is planned, the release states.

‘Why read literature?’

RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger To begin each school year, I ask my American literature classes at Marmion Academy to write down their thoughts on “Why read literature?” After all, if we’re going to be reading it for the next nine months, we should pursue a few reasons for doing so.

Some students echo what I would have said at their age: “Because it’s assigned” or “To get into college.” In only one section do I need to remind them that literature can entertain.

And then there are the really reflective, astute insights.

“We read literature to expand our minds with new experiences about places and things we never hope to see” (Blake Rubio).

“Reading is essentially our history” (Nick Brummel).

“It’s like living in someone else’s shoes. It carries us through time and makes us feel liberated” (Jeffrey Cherif).

“It helps us see what other people’s opinions are” (Nick Calabria).

“Literature often tells a story about someone or something that can come alive through each sentence” (Luke Nesterowicz).

“Literature inspires actions and movements” (Austin Rullo).

Professional authors, professors and researchers are hard pressed to say it better.

“Poems do not simply express,” Jane Hirshfield writes in her book that examines great poems, “Ten Windows.” “Seeing through poetry’s eyes, hearing through poetry’s ears, we come to know ourselves less tempered, more free than we were, and connected to ... a larger world.”

Great literature introduces us to uncommon, unknown people and worlds, making them familiar.

Of a modern novelist’s American characters exiled to Paris, George Orwell writes, “All of them are not only credible but completely familiar; you have the feeling that all

their adventures have happened to yourself.”

Great literature “offers practice in sympathy with people unlike oneself,” the authors of “The Fabulous Future?” – Morton Schapiro and Gary Saul Morson – contend.

“When readers identify with a character from another social class, period, culture or gender, they experience a new sense of the world. To do so, they must bracket, not presume, the values and social beliefs usually taken for granted.”

“I think morality begins with understanding what it is to be someone else,” Morson elaborates on C-SPAN2’s “Book TV.” “ ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’ ” Moreover, science corroborates that reading fiction makes us better people. A 2013 Emory University study looked at the brains of people soon after reading fiction compared to those who hadn’t, Gabe Bergado reports. “The brains of the readers ... found increased connectivity ... in the primary sensory region. ... When you visualize yourself scoring a touchdown ... you can actually somewhat feel yourself in the action.” Thus, a reader envisioning fictional characters experiences their emotions.

Additionally, Bergado continues, the New School for Social Research finds “literary fiction enhanced participants’ empathy” beyond those reading popular fiction due to great literature’s “complex, ambiguous” characterization.

Last January, a “Sound Off” caller complained, “Why can’t we all get along? ... People shoot people;” kids don’t respect their elders; and they’re all about “how many iPads can they get.”

Maybe those kids – along with the rest of us – should pick up some Shakespeare, Whitman and Tolstoy.

A look at Jeb Bush’s tax plan THE WASHINGTON POST With much of the Republican presidential field unwilling to address budget issues, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Wednesday released a comprehensive and detailed tax plan worth taking seriously. It should serve as a starting point for the 2016 Republican debate on governing priorities.

Bush borrows heavily from the recent work of Martin Feldstein, a Harvard economics professor and Ronald Reagan’s chief economics adviser.

Feldstein has identified the country’s overgrown mess of a tax code as a vehicle for government spending that isn’t transparent and often isn’t particularly useful. Deductions, such as for mortgage interest, cost tens of billions of dollars every year, mostly to the benefit of the wealthy. Feldstein has proposed limiting the deductions Americans can claim, thereby bringing in more revenue, while offsetting that move with lower income-tax rates.

Bush embraces this logic. He would spare the deduction for charitable giving, but he would cut the deduction for state and local taxes entirely, and

he would limit the value a tax filer could claim from every other itemized deduction, including mortgage interest, to 2 percent of adjusted gross income. He would then cut income-tax rates significantly, with the top rate falling from 39.6 percent to 28 percent.

He also would eliminate the estate tax and Social Security taxes on working seniors, and he would increase tax credits for the working poor. For corporations, the top rate would fall from 35 percent to 20 percent, with added incentives for investment and reduced incentives for taking on debt.

There’s a gigantic catch: Bush’s plan would reduce federal revenue – a lot. An analysis from Feldstein and three other economists estimates that, without accounting for any added economic growth the plan might spur, the tax scheme would lose the government an astonishing $3.4 trillion over 10 years.

Feldstein and his colleagues suggest this budget hole can be made up by cutting spending, and Bush’s campaign staff promises more proposals will illuminate the whole picture. Yet the budget is already strained against strict spending caps.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Since he took over as coach in 1999, the Vikings have been known for their ability to run the football – and just when you thought they would be done, they’d run it some more.

With the departure of quarterback Daniel Santacaterina to Northern Illinois, Wicinski saw potential in this year’s signal-caller in Sean Chambers, but thought the running game still would be more prevalent this season.

But after Chambers has thrown for three touchdown passes in each of the first two games, both Geneva victories, Wicinski may have to rethink exactly how he wants the offense to look moving forward.

“I did think we’d get back to more running this year, and I think that’s still the plan,” Wicinski said. “Sean has started on fire and has really made some great decisions. The running game is not exactly where we want it to be but it’s getting there. That’s my comfort zone ... to get in there and pound the football.”

If the running game isn’t where Wicinski wants it to be, then opponents better watch out. Sure, the offensive line, led by the big body of Loudon Vollbrecht, is gaining seasoning, but starting senior running back Justin Taormina still has found success.

The 2-0 start, beating both West Aurora and Richards, has seen Taormina rush for more than 100 yards in each contest, while Chambers has found success through the air.

Geneva has become much more than just the ground and pound days of old, making it a much more difficult team to game plan for moving forward.

“It really makes our offense that much more dynamic,” Taormina said. “We have some speed guys that definitely know what they’re doing, and when we’ve seen the pass game be successful and the run game opens up, we’re al-

most unstoppable.”

Chambers, a Princeton recruit as a defensive back, has taken a bit of a backseat on the defensive side to focus on his play-calling duties, but still occasionally finds himself on defense in important situations.

But having gotten quarterback repetitions over the past two weeks, combined with playing behind Santacaterina has helped Chambers step right in and not miss a beat.

“It’s something I’ve been working at for quite some time now,” Chambers said. “I think the hard work that I’ve put in is paying off, and I’m happy with the way things have started. The running game is still coming because (Wicins-

ki) loves that, but I have had great protection as well, so it’s kind of just the way things have played out.”

Taking what the defense gives you can be a crucial part of mid-game adjustments as well as an initial game plan.

Like Wicinski said, he still believes his comfort zone falls between “more 70-30 run than the current 50-50,” but they’ve taken what they’ve been given and, for a lack of a better word, run with it.

“I could see why coach Wicinski would want us to get back to that smash-mouth style run game,” Vollbrecht said. “You have to learn how to deal with failure in this game.

year, and hopefully we never have to. But the balance has been key for us really clicking on all cylinders here early in the season.”

Chambers has not only been a key contributor on the field, but someone to look to up for many of the Vikings.

When Taormina has been in the backfield throughout the first two games, the trust he has in Chambers is something he’ll never forget.

“Sean is a great teammate to have,” Taormina said. “He’s stepped into this leadership role so well and he’s definitely a teammate I’m always going to remember having for a long time.”

“We didn’t want our kids to not have a homecoming game,” Fitzgerald said of the moving of games. “We were hoping that something opened up so we could go somewhere to play, but that wasn’t the case.”

The buzz in the stands This game usually brings out the best in both schools. Last year, Marmion came out on top, 17-13, in a hard-fought, physical battle in Wheaton. Expect much of the same with the Spartans trying to avenge last season’s tough loss.

“This is always a great matchup,” St. Francis coach Mike Fitzgerald said. “It’s a rivalry game and they usually always go down to the wire. We’re excited for the test and looking forward to getting things going.”

St. Francis comes in after a bye week. The team was unable to find a Week 2 opponent after thumping Kelvyn Park, 46-0, in its opener. Dual threat quarterback Johnny Tate of St. Charles leads Marmion into this one after the Cadets suffered their first loss, 13-6, at Guerin (Indiana) on Saturday.

The marquee matchup St. Francis against Marmion’s physicality played a large part in last year’s matchup, and don’t expect to see too much of that change this time around. Fitzgerald has stressed to his team that the Cadets will not back down from contact and his team needs to be ready and willing to accept and be just as physical.

“Last year there were key situations for us to stop them and a chance to get off the field defensively,” Fitzgerald said. “We played right into their hands and I definitely think this time around we’re prepared to match that physicality and take them out of their comfort zone.”

With Marmion’s physicality up front comes a unique running look for St. Francis.

If the Spartans want to come away with

a rivalry victory on the road, they have to not only match the Cadets’ toughness, but want to do so.

The X-factor The effect of St. Francis’ unplanned layoff probably will be the most interesting factor that develops as tonight’s game unfolds.

With St. Francis essentially having two weeks to prepare for the Cadets, both coaches had a slightly different view of how that will affect the game. With the layoff comes rest and recovery from any injuries or fatigue that occurred, although there were few of those on the surface against Kelvyn Park.

“I think it’s a big advantage for them,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “We’ve had two quality games and they have been able to scout us, while we essentially know nothing about what they do. They’ll have their bullets all rested and ready to go, and we just hope that we have big enough shells being battle-tested.”

Fitzgerald, on the other hand, didn’t see it as so much of an advantage, although he wasn’t going to complain about having a fully healthy squad entering the game.

“There’s some positives, but there’s also a disadvantage to it,” Fitzgerald said. “We haven’t faced any pressure or key situations.

We have tried to simulate some of those things, but until you get on the field and see them in person, you’re not exactly sure how the guys will react.”

Best-case scenario for the Spartans The turnover battle will be important, but

I think it will benefit St. Francis more to win that battle. If the Spartans match that physicality, it will open up more room for quarterback Peter Fassnacht, running back Will Purdom and Co. to create plays and spread the field. The Spartans will look to make Marmion defend numerous looks with a number of players touching the ball. If the Spartans can find a good balance, with a few more passing attempts than the three they had in Week 1, Marmion could be in for a difficult time on defense.

Best-case scenario for the Cadets Thorpe flat out said his team did not finish in last week’s loss. So this time around?

The best case-scenario: They get in the red zone and finish off drives. It has been Thorpe’s word of the week: “Finish.” If the Cadets can stick to their game plan and take care of what they can control on both sides of the ball while limiting turnovers and big plays form the Spartans, Marmion has to like its chances to beat the Spartans for the fourth straight year.

St. Francis 24, Marmion 20 I went back and forth on this matchup for quite some time. But I think the Spartans are up for the challenge, and that rest turns into a positive. Fitzgerald has been preaching physicality for the past two weeks, and I expect St. Francis to match that intensity and passion and do just enough to hold off a Cadets comeback. I think Marmion will have the ball on the last drive with a chance to win the game, but the Spartans come up with a stop to pick up the win.

Cougars’ postseason run ends

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As it pertains to his spikes and first full professional baseball season, Cougars left-hander Josh Taylor happily is in the black.

T r a d e d from red-clad, Class-A Lakewood (New Jersey) of the Philadelphia Josh Taylor Phillies organization to the Arizona Diamondbacks system in early July, Taylor needed a few starts to get up to Kane County’s color scheme.

Soon after his agent sent the proper footwear, Taylor began dealing, helping vault the Cougars to the best record in the second half of the Midwest League season and a playoff berth.

“It’s always good to make the postseason,” Taylor said.

“It always looks good. … Its a lot of fun being on a team that’s in the chase. As soon as I get here, we’re in the chase, you know.”

Taylor was set to start the potential decisive game of the Cougars’ best-of-three series against Peoria today, but it was not needed as the Chiefs

swept the series with Thursday’s 3-2 win at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

That put Taylor’s final season line with the Cougars at 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 11 starts over 59 innings. He struck out 53 and walked 20.

His most sterling outing with Kane County was his fifth start, a complete-game effort on July 31 in which he struck out 13 Cedar Rapids hitters in a 5-1 home win.

July 31, as it happens, is the Major League Baseball non waiver trade deadline.

By then, however, the 22-yearold Taylor already had found a new spot at which he felt at home, although he was adamant he enjoyed his time in the Phillies system.

“You don’t know what to expect coming in halfway through the season to a team that has been built all season,” Taylor said.

“As soon as we got here, I was already having fun with them and clinging with them real well.”

Taylor also was speaking for right-handed reliever Chris Oliver, who also came from Lakeland in a deal involving future considerations from both Arizona and Philadelphia.

Working with Cougars

pitching coach Doug Bochtler, a former big league righty, stimulated both men.

“With Boch, just about every bullpen, we’re working on something new, just to further along the process,” Taylor said. “One time, I was working on staying strong with my front half, and the next bullpen, I was working on striding further, carrying the ball further.

“He’s a huge mechanical guy, and that’s what I like to learn from to help further me along, because he’s been there and knows what it takes, and it’s awesome to have a guy who knows that stuff.”

Now, Taylor and the rest of the Cougars will enter an offseason they felt came too soon despite a season of steady player development.

“A lot of these guys are surviving and just trying to be a part of it,” Cougars hitting coach Vince Vince Harrison said.

NOTEWORTHY North Stars hit stride

Following custom during Tuesday’s match at Geneva, St. Charles North senior right side/setter Jaclyn Taylor converged with her teammates after every point the North Stars won.

As she did so, Taylor couldn’t help remembering the way North channeled the same purpose when the team came together in the locker room before the match.

She credited that above several other things for North’s 25-11, 25-13 sweep, a key early salvo in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division race.

“I think it’s just playing with each other,” Taylor said. “I love every girl on this team. Every point, I just feel like we play together as a team for each other.”

The North Stars avenged a two-set loss to the Vikings in the Plainfield North Invitational championship last month in which North “got caught sleeping on a couple of plays,” coach Lindsey Hawkins said.

This time, North seized and maintained control almost from the start, kicking off a challenging week that included Wednesday’s road win at DeKalb. North hosts Crystal Lake

South tonight.

New Dogs, old tricks

Batavia opened the season with two freshmen playing prominent roles.

Libero Sam Juarez and outside hitter/ setter Julia Kim have embraced sharing an extra workload together and haven’t disappointed. Turns out they’re accustomed to it as longtime teammates at Rotolo Middle School and Club Fusion.

“We’ve played for the past eight seasons together, so we’ve been together for a while,” Juarez said. “There’s a lot of chemistry between us, and so we just have a special bond. Being together on the court again, I like it.”

Fittingly, the Bulldogs’ season opener fell on Middle School Night, when Rotolo seventh- and eighth-grade girls volleyball players were recognized before the match.

“I just remember coming down when they’d call your name and just looking at the varsity players and having that as my goal,” Juarez said. “And then achieving my goal, it makes me proud.”

Rocket power ... eventually

Burlington Central eventually found

a spurt in Tuesday’s Big Northern Conference East opener against visiting Richmond Burton, rallying for a 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 win behind Lexi DeWaard (29 assists) and Rachel Gaydos (17 digs).

Still, something familiarly frustrating happened on the way to the Rockets’ victory: the team started slow and scrambled to recover.

“We had a real nice comeback; Richmond was a solid team,” BC coach Marv Leavitt said. “We just need to settle down. We just for whatever reason come out really slow. We battle back, but it’s just something we’re going to have to work on.”

The concept of muscle memory typically enters the lexicon in running or other endurance sports, but it turns out Central is adept at it on the court.

Although the Rockets lost the third set of Saturday’s Rochelle Tournament final to Moline, 16-4, the team forced a 14-all tie after trailing, 8-1.

“We have great fight,” Leavitt said, “but we’re going to have to come out stronger.”

Wellness program guide released Scientific series, KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – TriCity Family Services has released its 2015-16 Emotional Wellness Program Guide, which includes classes, workshops and support groups for all ages.

The emotional wellness programs are offered to children, teens, adults and seniors and are designed to provide education and support for a variety of issues people face in their day-to-day lives.

Some Emotional Wellness Programs (formerly called Prevention and Early Intervention Programs) are open to all interested participants without screening, and oth-

ers require an over-the-phone or in-person screening. There will not be any mental health assessments conducted, diagnosis given and no treatment plans will be made. Emotional Wellness Programs are not insurance reimbursable, according to a news release.

The workshop offerings include the “Bridges Divorce Adjustment Workshop” for children ages 7 to 11; “Chick Chat,” a program developed by Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence, for girls in fourth, fifth and sixth grade; the “International Child Development Program;” “Project Self-Compassion” for girls in high school;

‘Asset Earth,’ to begin Sept. 24 KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com

SUGAR GROVE – This month, Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove will host the “Asset Earth” series, which will explore newly discovered ecosystems as part of the college’s ongoing community education series.

The series will begin with “Exploring ‘New’ Environments on Earth” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Sugar Grove campus auditorium, located at Route 47 Waubonsee Drive.

The free event will be presented by world-renowned geologist and polar explorer, Ross Powell, according to a news release.

Powell, a research professor of geology and environmental geosciences at Northern Illinois University, will talk about new discoveries on Earth and their implications, the release states. Powell will share with the audience how he and other scientists conduct research at the coldest place on the planet, Antarctica.

In November, the science behind dating and relationships will be revealed when Waubonsee biology instructor Justin Hoshaw presents “What Science Can Teach You About Dating, Love and Sex (That Sex Ed Didn’t).”

“Asset Earth” is a series of presentations by scientific experts on current scientific thought and events. The topics and speakers are selected to present ideas and concepts about the planet in an entertaining manner, states the release.

She is in denial and hasn’t seen a doctor since. She doesn’t take her medications and refuses to change her diet or exercise. She is also obese.

When I try to discuss this with her, she gets angry and storms away. Her school is three hours away and I’m worried something terrible will have to happen to make her get serious. She’s in that “invincible/know-it-all/I don’t care” teenage phase of her life.

There are already signs that her diabetes is out of control – headaches, vision changes, foot sores, numbness in her hands and irritability. Any advice before it’s too late? – Worried Sick In Virginia Dear Worried Sick: Yes. There may be many reasons Lacey doesn’t want to deal with her diagnosis right now. With starting college, meeting new friends and navigating the transition to adulthood, she has a lot she’d rather focus on, and issues that seem more

People Lacey’s age don’t like to be told what to do or be nagged.

So, approach the issue as a CONVERSATION and demonstrate an interest in HER perspective and goals. This can happen in bits and pieces over an extended period of time, as she comes to see you as a supportive resource.

You might start by saying, “What did you think of what ‘Dr. Jones’ said about Type 2 diabetes?” Then LISTEN. Resist the urge to tell her to do something.

Instead, reflect back on what she says – even if it’s something you’d rather not hear, such as, “I have too many other things to worry about right now.” Your goal is to get her talking and thinking, and let her know you’re willing to

listen and let her make her own decisions.

Once you get her talking, listen carefully for any signs that she’s considering changes (eating more healthfully, joining a gym, trying medication suggested by her doctor) and show an interest in her thoughts, such as, “So you’re thinking about eating healthier?

What have you been doing?” Offer concrete support such as offering to help cover the cost of the gym, looking up diabetes-friendly recipes or helping her connect with a doctor close to her school.

In the meantime, engage in behaviors that Lacey needs to adopt, i.e., learning about diabetes and maintaining healthy eating and regular exercise habits. When she’s home, set a good example.

Discuss side effects with doctor when starting a new drug Dear Doctor K: I need to start taking a new medication to treat a recently diagnosed condition. Is there anything I can do to reduce the risk of side effects?

Dear Reader: My colleague Dr. Gordon Schiff, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says it well: “All drugs have effects – the ones we want and the ones we don’t. The unwanted effects are known as side effects.”

When you take a drug, it is distributed throughout your body, to all your organs and tissues.

The drug may do different things in those different organs. Take aspirin, for example. Its anti-inflammatory action may suppress your arthritis. But it also inhibits the body’s production of the chemicals that protect your stomach lining and help your blood clot. As a result, indigestion and bleeding are side effects of aspirin use.

Once a drug is on the market, its manufacturer must inform physicians and consumers of every possible side effect. This results in long lists printed in microscopic type. For over-the-counter drugs,

There are some things you can do to reduce your risk of medication side effects. For example: • Ask for a drug that’s been on the market for a while. The information on side effects of a newly released medication is often based on clinical trials involving a few hundred people. An older drug is likely to have been used by hundreds of thousands of people. That experience can reveal additional side effects and give doctors an idea of which are most common, which are most serious and which might occur only after months or years of use.

• Talk to your doctor about what to expect. Ask what side effects his or her patients have experienced. How severe were they?

How long did they last? What can you do if you experience them?

• Listen to your body. If you

develop a new symptom after starting a new medicine, type the name of the drug, followed by “side effects,” into an Internet search engine. You’ll promptly see a list of the most common side effects that have been reported for that drug. If the symptom you are having could be a drug side effect, check with your doctor.

• If, after starting a new medication, you experience a bothersome or unexpected side effect, don’t just stop taking the new drug.

Call your doctor to discuss your concerns first. It can be dangerous to stop taking certain medicines abruptly.

It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of a new medicine. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of the medicine.

Dear Teens: Because we receive so many letters from young people who have a parent (or two parents) with a drinking problem, we would like to pass along the following helpful information. It comes from a newsletter published

by Parents Who Care, an organization that helps teens cope with this often-devastating problem: Parents are only human; they aren’t perfect.

Sometimes they drink too much. When they do, they wreak havoc on the whole family.

Every activity is affected by whether Mom or Dad has been drinking.

Meals, parties, trips or other activities may be postponed or canceled.

Alcohol is an addictive drug, and most professionals believe that alcoholism is a disease. Parents are not bad people just because they lose control while drinking.

It isn’t necessary to know if your father or mother is actually an alcoholic, but you need to know what to do if his or her drinking is affecting your life and the lives of others.

First, you should know that you are not alone. In a classroom of 30 students, there will be three or four students who have one or more parents who drink too much. Because families often keep parental drinking a secret, you may not know other kids’ situations, just as they probably don’t know about yours.

Second, it’s natural to feel embarrassed or ashamed that your parents drink too much. But it can make life easier to know that many other kids are dealing with the same issues and that there are things you can do to reduce

Third, it’s not your fault that your parents drink too much, even though you may feel it is. Nor is it possible for you to hide their bottles, water down their alcohol or try to act like a model child or teen to keep them from drinking.

What you should not do is ride in a car with a parent if he or she is drinking. And don’t try to talk to your parents while they are drinking.

They will just ignore you or get angry. Wait until your mom or dad is sober, and then let your parent know how concerned you are.

If both parents have drinking problems, it may be necessary to go to other members of the family for help: older siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents.

You might want to speak with a teacher or counselor, a minister or rabbi, a youth group leader, a coach or other adult you can trust.

If you feel that you are in danger, take action immediately.

Meanwhile, get involved in school activities. This will give you something else to do besides worry about your home life.

Teens who have family members with an alcohol problem should contact Alateen, a part of Al-Anon. Alateen will offer support and information on how to cope with loved ones who have drinking problems.

In this deal, for example, what should happen in hearts? Would you prefer to declare in or defend against three no-trump after West has led the heart nine?

In the auction, South was right to respond one no-trump, not two diamonds. If game were possible, it was so much more likely to be in three no-trump than in five diamonds. And if the latter were best, North would run from no-trump.

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, two hearts (given that East has the kingqueen) and three clubs. He must play on diamonds to establish a winner there. However, this requires losing the lead twice, and the risk is that East will establish and run his heart suit first.

The key play comes at trick one. If East puts up his heart queen, South ducks, takes the second heart trick, and plays a diamond. West will win but not have another heart to play.
