‘A driving force behind everything I do’ Sugar Grove’s Fagel: 9/11 should never be forgotten

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Sept. 11 never will be just another day for Mike Fagel. The Sugar Grove resident – an author, a teacher and an emergency management expert – said he always will remember being at the scene of the 9/11 attacks in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

It’s a topic he knows well.

Among his roles, Fagel is a homeland security liaison and investigator with the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District. He has written several textbooks and teaches courses on homeland

security.

“It’s what I’m supposed to do,” Fagel said.

But he said he has been disappointed that there are not more events planned each year to remember how the United S t a t e s w a s Mike Fagel attacked on that date, and to honor those who died trying to help the victims.

“I guess, sadly, we, as a general public, have short attention spans,” said Fagel, who added that – for most

people – there could be a crisis going on in their own lives, such as home, school, budget and “those things that run our daily lives.”

Fagel wrote some thoughts about 9/11, which can be seen by viewing the online version of this story. Fagel wrote it “is very hard to believe that it’s been 13 years since the largest attack on American soil,” but he also added “the news today is filled with reports of terror attacks around the world, as well as continued threats to the U.S. and its allies, both here and abroad.”

Fagel teaches college courses at several schools, and he said he tells his students that it’s important to be ready for the next event and be able to do what is necessary to play a role in helping.

Chili cook-off set in Batavia

WHAT: Fourth annual chili cook-off at the Batavia Viking Ring Lodge 18. The Vikings are collaborating with Batavia United Way to support local nonprofit agencies and the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Burn Camp.

Batavia aldermen support medical marijuana cultivation center

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting unanimously voted to support an application for a proposed medical marijuana cultivation

center in an industrial area on Paramount Parkway.

The full City Council is set to vote on the letter of support at its regular meeting Monday.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture is charged with reviewing applications for marijuana cultivation centers and

dispensing centers.

Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said no one else has approached the city for a letter of support. Seventh Ward Alderman Drew McFadden was among the aldermen that voiced support for the proposal.

“I look at it as any other pharmaceutical manufacturer,” McFadden said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Garfield Farm Museum to host writing program CAMPTON HILLS – An afternoon of creative writing, led

by Crystal Hollis, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Garfield Farm Museum, 3N016 Garfield Road, Campton Hills. The afternoon will explore the history of the farm, with participants walking its grounds before sitting and polishing writing skills with newly found inspiration.

All levels of writing experience are welcome. It is the farm’s first public writing event.

Joggin’ for Frogmen set for Saturday WEST CHICAGO – Joggin’ for Frogmen is set from 8:30 a.m.

Participants ages 3 and up can run or walk to honor Navy SEALs and all military heroes who have sacrificed their lives while protecting the country.

The event is presented by the Veterans United Foundation, and all proceeds from the race benefit the Navy SEAL Foundation.

According to the department’s website, qualifying patients may possess up to 2.5 ounces of medical cannabis in a 14-day period from an authorized medical cannabis dispensary. Patients under the age of 18 are not qualified for the program.

All seats are for four years except for two-year seats, one each in the 3rd and 5th Wards, officials said.

Nominating petitions may not be circulated prior to Sept. 23.

Candidates can file their petitions from 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday between Dec. 15 and Dec. 22 at Geneva City Hall, 109 James St. More information about the election is available on the Kane County Clerk’s website, www.kanecountyelections.org.

SEEING IN 3D Over the past few years, film and television producers have made movies and television content more widely available in 3D. While this effort to bring three-dimensional programming to large and small screens is largely designed to attract young viewers, some children and young adults seem to be experiencing problems watching 3D shows. If so, it may be indicative of a problem with their binocular vision, which requires that both eyes function in a coordinated manner as they converge, focus, and track the 3D image.

Thus, in some respects, watching 3D movies and programming serves as a screening tool much in the same way that eye specialists assess binocular vision during a comprehensive eye exam.

P.S. Symptoms that may be indicative of a potential problem viewing images in 3D can include headaches, blurred vision, nausea, and dizziness.

8 McMahon to head committee looking at best practices in prosecution

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is heading up a new statewide committee that will evaluate and recommend a best practices protocol on specific issues related to investigation and prosecution of serious criminal offenses.

“I think there is momen-

tum to develop best practices in criminal prosecution,” McMahon said Wednesday during his monthly media briefing. “The goal really is to re-emphasize what our responsibility is in all criminal cases. We want to get it right the first time – to get it right for the victim, but also to get it right for the defendant.”

Legislation recently was signed by Gov. Pat Quinn es-

tablishing a Best Practices Committee within the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor. State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, and Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, sponsored the legislation.

“They both enthusiastically supported it,” McMahon said.

The committee will come up with ideas that are more

flexible than a legislative mandate, he said. McMahon said legislative mandates “tend to be a one-size-fits-all.”

He said the idea has received support from other state’s attorneys across the state.

The idea for the committee is based on a national model being promoted by the Bureau of Justice Administration and pioneered in the state of New

York.

McMahon said the committee will look at such issues as lineup procedures and custodial interrogation.

“It is a way for us to sit down face to face and think about those issues,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to step up and offer leadership. We are on the front lines of this.

We are the ones that have to put investigations together.”

A DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy found an open container of liquor in Padrini’s car, said Chief Deputy Gary Dumdie.

Padrini was charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control

device.

Both drivers were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, but Padrini was discharged and taken to DeKalb County Jail.

The other driver was expected to be released from the hospital later Wednesday, Dumdie said.

And while little girls escape to that magical castle, little boys might be more taken with things that zoom and go vroom. Each week during “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” children 18 months to 3 years will sing songs and participate in crafts and activities based on their favor-

And with the holidays coming up, the “Parent/ Child Gingerbread House” class lets parents and kids ages 2 to 6 work as a team to create a festive gingerbread house to take home.

With an emphasis on fun and learning, the Adult & Child classes not only provide a unique way for a mom or dad, grandparent or guardian, to spend quality time with their child, they’re also a great way to make friends and meet new people. While their children are developing important socialization skills by learning how to play with other children, stay-athome moms get a chance to meet and bond with other parents.

“I’ve seen a lot of friendships develop through these classes,” Mulready said.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Most people with the virus have no clinical symptoms of illness, but some might become ill three

Parents of pre-preschoolers know that the littlest children can be the biggest sponges for any experiences or entertainment adults bring their way. Everything has the potential to be infinitely fascinating, whether for five minutes or five hours. Clapping hands to music – who knew? Gluing glitter to construction paper – wicked fun!

But for a stay-at-home parent, it can be a struggle to supply this steady stream of stimulation, “supply” being the operative word. Craft materials such as finger paints, foam and feathers are not necessarily household items.

And the average home probably doesn’t have tom-toms, bells and tambourines lurking in the cupboards – never mind not owning them in the first place; knowing what to do with them is another matter entirely.

Luckily, early childhood programs at the St. Charles Park District can be the answer to a caring parent’s prayers.

Dozens of “Adult & Child” classes are designed to activate artistic impulses and ignite the imagination through crafts, games, music and stories that moms, dads, nannies and grannies can enjoy right along with their children.

From finger-painting to fire trucks, dress-up to dance, these programs let children indulge their creative spirit while helping them improve fine and gross motor skills

and initiate critical thinking exercises. Other parent/tot classes in dance, movement, tumbling and super sports work on improving hand-eye coordination, flexibility and balance.

“They can be a quick snapshot of what preschool is going to look like,” said Krista Mulready, recreation supervisor for early childhood and preschool programs.

Of course, one of the biggest hurdles parents of little ones face is the idea of separation anxiety when their child finally does enter preschool or kindergarten. Taking part in an Adult & Child class helps both parties get used to the idea of being in a classroom situation with other children.

Having Mom or Dad there with them provides a level of security and increases a sense of familiarity that will serve them well when it’s time to go through the doors on their own.

“These classes are nostress zones,” said Mulready.

“If a child doesn’t want to participate, that’s OK.” But who wouldn’t want to take part in the diverse curriculum of arts and crafts, music and movement programs specially designed for adult-child interaction?

Courses such as “Pee Wee Picasso & Play” stimulate the senses and the imagination as 2- to 4-year-olds and their parents create works of art while spending quality time together.

Weekend of activities on tap KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The 160th birthday of the Batavia Depot Museum will be celebrated this weekend with a variety of activities, including a Civil War encampment.

The depot, which dates back to 1854, originally was at the southeast corner of Van Buren and Webster streets and was moved to its current location at 155 Houston St. in October 1973.

An opening ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Civil War monument at the West Side Cemetery.

“We’ll conduct a wreath-laying ceremony and have a cemetery talk about how the monument came to be,” Depot Museum Director Carla Hill said, according to a news release. “The encampment itself will have so many aspects for people of all ages.”

Kids can make a corn husk doll, see medical demonstrations, learn how the soldiers lived and participate in educational activities. The U.S. Signal Corps Unit will do a lighted torch demonstration at 8 p.m. Saturday to show how they signaled the movements of the troops.

“It’s a full two days of fun and educational activities, and they won’t even know they’re learning,” Hill said, according to the release.

Saturday and Sunday will feature a ladies fashion show and tea to discuss traditions, clothing and customs in the 1860s.

Max Daniels will portray President Lincoln at 1 p.m. both days to give the president’s farewell speech as he left Springfield to go to Washington to serve his first term as president.

Laila Marti, age 89, of St. Charles, formerly of Aurora, passed away peacefully September 7, 2014, at her home surrounded by her family and loving caregivers at Inspirations.

She was born January 14, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Oscar and Laina (Waltonen) Johnson. Laila graduated from Copley School of Nursing in 1946.

She worked as a nurse for 51 years prior to retiring. She worked at Copley Hospital in the OB department and was an office nurse for 9 years. She stopped working to raise her 3 daughters but did return when her youngest daughter entered kindergarten. She worked 32 years for Drs. James and John Marks and Fox Valley Medical Associates.

Laila was a member of Rejoice Lutheran Church in Geneva, the Child Welfare Society, the Copley Nursing Alumni Association and the White Cross Auxiliary. She was active in the PTA and was a Girl Scout leader when her children were in school.

Laila was an avid supporter of her grandchildren’s activities; dance, sports and music.

Survivors include her daughters, Nila (William) Saloga, Karin (Michael) Mayes and Jani Marti; brother, Richard (Linda) Johnson; sister-in-law, Judy Marti; grandchildren, April (David) Hanson, Bill (Julie) Saloga, Charlie Saloga and A.J. Saloga; as well as 4 great grandchildren, 5 nieces and 2 nephews.

Laila was preceded in death by her husband, Richard F. Marti; her parents, Oscar and Laina Johnson; brother-in-law, David Marti; and nephew, Jeff Johnson.

Imogene Henderson (Smith) Ridge crossed over on August 11, 2014, in Sarasota, Florida, from complications of a fall/stroke. She was born Gloria Imogene Henderson on May 31, 1922, to Roy and June Henderson in Decatur, Illinois.

After graduating from Illinois State University she began her teaching career at the high school in Marengo, Illinois, teaching English, sponsoring the newspaper and yearbook, and directing school plays. There she met and married basketball coach Dale Smith. They eventually moved to St. Charles, Illinois, where she taught high school English and drama until the arrival of their daughter. The family spent several summers at the University of Colorado, where Dale and Imogene both obtained masters’ degrees. She resumed teaching by spending a year at Larkin High School in Elgin, Illinois, before moving to the English and Speech departments of Elgin Community College.

Dale crossed over in 1970, and Imogene met and married attorney Donald Ridge in 1981, retiring from teaching to move with him to Lake Forest, Illinois. When Don retired in 1998, they moved to the Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods in Sarasota. Don crossed over in 2013.

Imogene was the author of two books for teenage girls, Egg on Her Face and Time on Her Hands, published by J. B. Lippincott in the 1960s.

She also had work published in the Chicago Tribune Thursday Magazine and the Christian Science Monitor, as well as poems in several anthologies put out by Lake Shore Publishers and in women’s magazines.

An avid theatergoer ranging from Broadway musicals to indies, she also performed in community theater productions (including the Playmakers) and formed the readers’ theatre group “Book in Hand,” at Lake Pointe Woods.

She loved words, including grammar and spelling, often replying to emails with suggested corrections.

In the same vein, she enjoyed trivia, which was easy to acquire considering her avid readership of both fiction and nonfiction, but especially mystery and suspense novels (which she also tried her hand at writing), and her travel experiences. In addition she was an avid weather tracker (although her Houston family often had to explain that Texas is big, and what goes on in Dallas or El Paso does not necessarily threaten the

rest of the state). Others enjoyed her company as she loved to laugh, and was a generous, caring, and overall classy person.

Along with others mentioned above, she joins on the other side her sister, Royal Norquist and husband Roy. Family and friends remaining on this side include daughter, Brooke Smith and husband Jim Wright; granddaughter, Blair Ault (all of Houston, Texas); nephews, Mark Norquist and wife Christie, Brent Norquist and wife Carol (all of Anchorage, Alaska); nephew, Ken Smith and wife Joyce of St. Charles, Illinois; stepdaughter, Ann Ridge of Chicago, Illinois; step grandchildren, Audrey and Nicholas Ridge; and many grandnephews, grandnieces, and cousins, including all of those in the Kirby clan.

Tri-City Swing to hold 1920s-era event ST. CHARLES – In partnership with the St. Charles Arts Council, Tri-City Swing will hold a free 1920s-era event from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave., St. Charles.

The Jazz Age Party in the Park is a 1920s cultural experience for all ages.

Attendees are encouraged to wear 1920s Sunday afternoon attire. They can enter a picnic contest and a pie-baking contest.

The Walmart Foundation State Giving Council Program has opened the application period for its fourth cycle of giving.

Illinois nonprofit organizations can apply for funding to support programs within the scope of the “Focused Giving” areas that include hunger relief, healthy eating or career opportunity.

Grant requests for programs that would fall under “Community Engagement Giving,” including education, health care access and other human services programs, will be accepted during this cycle.

In order to be considered for grant funding this cycle, applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday.

For this cycle of giving, nonprofits will be notified of the funding decision on Nov. 8.

Prospective grantee organizations must submit applications through the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program’s online grant application.

Applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria.

Reflecting on Sept. 11, 2001

By SHAW MEDIA The 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States is today.

It’s been a long time. In other ways, it seems like just yesterday since we watched on live TV as the World Trade Center’s twin towers fell, since we saw the damage at the Pentagon and the crater in the middle of a Pennsylvania field, a horrifying symbol of the sacrifice those on board made for the safety of strangers.

For many, the horror of the day is ingrained in the memory, much like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was etched in the minds of a previous generation.

We are reminded of President George W. Bush’s warning when he addressed the nation after Sept. 11 that the war against terrorism would be long and not like other wars. It has seemed at times many people did not take the warning to heart, as 9/11 became more distant and the risks were shouldered by young people who volunteered to serve overseas in the nation’s fight against terrorism.

But the growing threat from ISIS, a terrorist group that, like al-Qaida in 2001, is sheltered by a foreign country while developing a power base that poses a serious threat to the United States, makes 9/11 very immediate again for all of us. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll finds nearly half of Americans believe the nation is less safe now than before Sept. 11, 2001.

As contentious as domestic politics have been for the past 13 years, the United States government should get credit for keeping large-scale terrorist attacks off of our nation’s shores. This has been done with discord at times, along with questions of whether our rights and liberties have been preserved.

But such issues always arise during times of war. And we must not forget that even though the attacks of 9/11 have not been repeated, we remain at war. Young men and women from across the country continue to put their lives at risk to preserve the security and freedom of the United States.

The ongoing nature of this war was obvious as President Barack Obama addressed the nation Wednesday night to talk to Americans about how the government would fight ISIS – a reminder of President Bush’s statement to the nation 13 years ago.

We know there are thousands who think daily of the war on terror – those who loved and cherished one or more of the nearly 3,000 souls who perished on 9/11, or who loved at least one of the more than 6,800 military members who have died in the war on terror since 2001.

But even those who do not have a hole in their heart because of a lost loved one should take time today to reflect on what has been lost during the past 13 years. It wasn’t just steel that fell that day; part of our collective innocence did, too.

We remember.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

CHARLES – A special ceremony is planned to celebrate the move of the historic Jones Law Office and rededication of its new site, the lower portion of Langum Park along Route 25, as “Camp Kane.” Langum Park is at Seventh and Madison avenues.

The rededication will be

Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

“This event celebrates the significant role St. Charles’ citizens played in the Civil War. There is a rich history of volunteerism and civic involvement in our town, which is evident to this day,” Rogina said, according to a news release. “Be sure to come on out and watch that history ‘come alive’ on Sept.

20.”

The tract of land along Route 25 was chosen because it once served as training grounds for Civil War sol-

diers in the 8th and the 17th regiments of the Illinois Volunteer Cavalry under the direction of Col. John Farnsworth, the release stated.

Farnsworth was a U.S. congressman, strong abolitionist, St. Charles resident and close confidante of Lincoln, the release stated.

The city moved the historic Jones Law Office building from 304 Cedar Ave., to its new location in Langum Park last month. The structure served as the law office of Steven Sandborn Jones, who is credited with proposing the town change its name from its orig-

Silverman said the experience her youngest daughter had at another gym influenced the decision to open her own fitness business.

“She hated it,” Silverman said.

In reaction to her daughter’s experience, Silverman earned a personal training certificate.

And after additional research, Silverman said she embraced the functional fitness concept – that is, of using one’s whole body for movement that helps in everyday life.

“My goal is to create a community with equipment and support for individuals to meet their long-term goals as opposed to joining a nameless, faceless [gym] and going for a few months to fulfill a resolution,” she said. “I wanted to provide a fitness home for people.”

GENEVA – Jan Silverman said she always has been physically active, not only running marathons regularly, but participating in ultra marathons, where she ran 100 miles in 30 hours.

“Thirty hours is slow for a 100-mile run,” Silverman said. “Elite runners run much, much faster.”

Still, in leaving her downtown Chicago job, Silverman, 51, of St. Charles, said she sought instead to combine her love of fitness with being involved in the community.

“During spring break, I was feeling like I needed to do something, both to become a part of the community I’m living in, and be closer to home,” Silverman said.

As a single mother of four with three adult children, and one 13-year-old daughter still at home, Silverman was a licensed clinical social worker in community mental health for 15 years before taking a job

in Chicago.

“In addition to wanting to spend time with [my daughter], I wanted to be part of a community again,” Silverman said. “I was thinking, ‘What can I do that is different?’ ” So she opened Geneva Fit – Fox Valley CrossFit, 321 Stevens St., Suite Q, Geneva, a 2,000-square-foot facility last week with a grand opening planned from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. St. Charles’ Steel Beam Theatre opens season Friday ‘Almost, Maine’ to kick off nonprofit theater’s 14th season

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Steel Beam Theatre in St. Charles will open its 14th season Friday, Sept. 12, with the production “Almost, Maine,” a play that explores love and loss in a mythical town called Almost, Maine.

Kane County reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Steel Beam founder and artistic director Donna Steele about the new season.

Eric Schelkopf: This is your 14th season. Did you ever imagine that you would be here 14 years?

Donna Steele: I guess I was hopeful, and we’re still here, which is a wonderful thing.

Schelkopf: What did you want to create when you started Steel Beam Theatre?

Steele: We wanted to create an arts environment and bring live theater to the community. At the time, we didn’t have a theater in town.

We wanted to bring live entertainment and educational programs for children, high quality theatrical entertainment at an affordable price.

We tried to select shows that would fit the demographic and please our audiences. We know we can’t please everyone, but we really try to pick a variety of things that will be satisfying not only to the artist, but also to the audience.

And I think we’ve done a pretty good job with that, because our attendance is generally over 50 percent, which is really great in the arts. Most arts groups figure that if you are selling half of your tickets, then you are doing pretty well.

We’re not completely sold out every night. That would be a wonderful goal.

Schelkopf: As far as this season, what were you striving to do?

Steele: That becomes more difficult every year, to figure out what fits on our stage and to look at what we have not

already done that is on our bucket list.

This year, and the last several years, I think our bent has sort of steered toward the lighter fare, toward more comedy. I think the economy has dictated that people want to escape. They want to laugh.

So we’re doing gentle works, I would say. I would say that this season is quite family-friendly, starting with a romantic comedy and then “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” and the one-man show “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol.”

“Veronica’s Room” is our murder mystery. Everybody loves a murder mystery, especially in January, we’ve found.

“Ordinary Days is an upbeat, contemporary musical.

“The Big Meal” is a pretty exquisite piece of theater, as well, that is about generations.

And we’re hoping to do “God of Carnage,” but we have not secured the rights to that as yet. Pretty soon we will know if we’re doing that or not.

We just try to pick things that we think people will enjoy.

Schelkopf: And how do you think this season compares to past seasons?

Steele: Well, I think we’re maintaining our integrity by choosing quality works.

It’s a nice blend of thought-provoking and entertaining productions.

Schelkopf: Along with your regular season, you also will once again present your 3-D haunted house, Kane County Scaregrounds, at the Kane County Fairgrounds in October. The proceeds will benefit you because Steel Beam is a nonprofit organization. Do you do that as an outreach to the community?

Steele: We do feel like we are reaching a larger audience, certainly a younger audience, a younger demographic.

It’s a very theatrical experience. The actors are really trained and, of course, there’s the 3-D artistry. We think it is a theatrically designed experience.

I think that’s what sets us apart, the visual artistry and the trained actors.

Moist and nearly falling off the bone, the chicken, accompanied by baked beans and sweet potato soufflé, was the table favorite. The brisket came sliced atop a piece of grilled Texas toast and a side of creamy mac and cheese and collard greens.

ST. CHARLES – After one bite of the Brunswick Stew, I knew I would be coming back to The River House Barbecue in downtown St. Charles. A traditional dish hailing from the American South, the rich and thick stew consisted of chicken, brisket and corn, and ever-so-slightly tickled the tongue with a kick of spice. A perfect start to a meal featuring slow- and low-cooked barbecue and southern favorites such as collard greens, beef brisket and sweet potato mash.

The restaurant and bar is located east of the Fox River and set up shop where the Thirsty Fox Pub used to be.

As a resident, I am elated that the city has acquired an affordable barbecue restaurant that continues to expand the horizons of the city’s main street dining scene. Hopefully, River House’s inception will continue to inspire the flourishing of unique dining concepts entering the downtown area.

The restaurant hasn’t yet had it’s grand opening, which is probably why on a Monday for lunch, it was pretty empty.

But don’t let that deter you from visiting.

We took a seat near the window that offers views of the Arcada Theater and the surrounding downtown – a perfect nook for people watching.

Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly, checked on us often and offered recommendations to us first-timers.

After a round of waters served in Mason jars hit the table, my dining companion and I ordered a cup of the stew ($6.99) to share. We originally intended on ordering the recommended Jalapeño Bombs ($8.99) but they spend a substantial amount of time in the smoker, and wouldn’t be ready in time. So, we ordered the Smokehouse Buttermilk Onion Rings ($6.95) instead.

Second City celebrates 55 years of comedy of learn how everyone fits together and how that translates to the stage as well.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Over the years, Chicago’s The Second City comedy school has launched the careers of many top comedians, including the likes of Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Bill Murray.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Alan Linic, a member of The Second City Touring Company, about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: Is it an honor for you just to be part of this tour?

Alan Linic: Oh, yeah, absolutely. I had seen Second City shows when I was in college, and it really changed me and kind of altered my goals.

To do this now, as I have seen people before me do it, is just such a dream come true.

Schelkopf: It seems like so many great comedians have come out of Second City. Why do you think it is such a breeding ground for comedians?

Linic: One of the things that Second City is known for and has always been known for is it’s satirical angle. I think that coupled with the improvisational aspect is extremely attractive.

And it helps that there already is a community there when you arrive, because Second City has been around for 55 years at this point. So by the time you get there and you discover that there are all these other like-minded people who have the same sensibilities as you and are so talented, it’s like finding a place that you fit in, more than anything else.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Second City’s Schelkopf: So, for people who come out to 55th Anniversary Tour will come to the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1201 Main St., Batavia. the show, what should they expect?

I probably would be doing even if I had never seen a Second City show, or known that was a career option.

Schelkopf: What have you learned being a member of The Second City Touring Company?

Linic: There are so many skills that I think you pick up. And probably the most important of them is this idea of sharing space and focus with people.

Schelkopf: How has being in Second City We’re on the road all the time in an changed you? enclosed space, in a van, in a plane, in Linic: There’s something almost com- a car and a bus, what have you. Linic: The 55th Anniversary Tour is a sort of celebration of past and present for The Second City. So it features a lot of the sketches that were written by so many famous Second City alumni, like Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert.

We’ll be performing on the stage scenes that were written by people who came before us, sort of celebrating that history of Second City.

Schelkopf: And I understand your fiancee, Claire Meyer, is also in Second City.

Linic: Yes, she performs with The Second City Training Center ensemble.

Schelkopf: Because I guess one thing that has probably put the two of you in the spotlight is your Twitter handle, @WeFoughtAbout, where you document all of the arguments you have had. How did that come about? What made you want to do it?

Linic: It sort of happened by itself, almost. We had an argument last year, and I remember saying after we resolved the fight, “If we posted this somewhere, nobody would believe that we just had a shouting match about this.”

And the next day, we were thinking about that some more, and we were like, why don’t we start posting these things and see what happens and kind of help us keep a chronicle of the dumb things that we argue about that we probably shouldn’t be fighting over.

So we did. And it’s been going ever since.

Schelkopf: Do you think it has helped people to realize how trivial some of their own arguments are?

Linic: I think it has been fairly polarizing. I think we’ve gotten as many people say, “Oh, I had thought about this too,” or, “Oh man, we fight about stuff that is just as dumb” as we have gotten people say things like, “You guys are clearly not a good couple” or like, “This is clearly made up.”

I think the people who get it, get it and the people who don’t, don’t.

And that’s pretty much how everything works, so you can’t let it affect you.

‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’: Comedic insight into human heart

By TOM WITOM planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Fox Valley Repertory’s superb production of the bittersweet “Brighton Beach Memoirs” underscores how well Neil Simon’s probing insights into the human heart and his deft comedic touch retain their potency.

The semi-autobiographical coming-of-age play had the opening-night audience at Pheasant Run Resort alternately tensing with anxiety and roaring with laughter. The well-paced show features a talented seven-member cast directed by Ronan Marra.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs,” written in 1983, is part of a trilogy that includes “Biloxi Blues” and “Broadway Bound.”

Its focal character, Eugene Morris Jerome (smartly played by Ryan Stajmiger), is a stand-in for the playwright. As a 15-year-old in the throes of

center fielder – or a writer.

Eugene uses a journal to record events while growing up in 1937 in a cramped house in Brooklyn. He tracks the everyday struggles that confront him and the other six Polish-Jewish Americans comprising his family circle. As his overwrought father is quick to point out: “If you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t live in this house.”

Under the same roof are Eugene’s older brother Stanley (Joseph Galizia), a hard-working young man who discovers he has a lot to learn about poker; Jack (Joseph Sterns), the father who’s in burnout mode working two jobs to keep the family afloat; and Kate (Brigitte Ditmars), the mother, a self-admitted worrier and stereotypical martyr who feels under-appreciated.

Rounding out the household are Kate’s widowed, asthmatic sister Blanche (Stephanie Chavara), who, after her

husband died, moved in with her two pampered daughters, Laurie (Elizabeth Stenholt), who plays up her heart murmur for all it’s worth; and Nora (Ariel Begley), her older 16-year-old sister who yearns to trade high school for a career in the movies.

And there’s never a dull moment.

Just when the family’s resources appear stretched to the limit, the possibility arises that they will be joined by other relatives fleeing oppression as war breaks out in Europe.

One of the play’s funniest scenes involves Eugene’s worldly older brother sharing the facts of life with his innocent sibling. Commenting on his sexual awakening in a brief soliloquy, Eugene muses: “If I had my choice between a tryout with the Yankees and actually seeing her [Nora’s] bare breasts for two and a half seconds, I would have some serious thinking to do.”

As most of their Midwest League brethren departed their host families or apartment leases when the regular season ended Sept. 1, the Cougars and Captains keep extending their stays.

Each Cougars player remains with his host family, a loyal group that’s scattered around the Tri-Cities and western suburbs.

“It’s good. It’s one less distraction,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “[The host families] do a great job.”

Most Captains players stayed in an apartment complex during the season – the organization uses only a few host families – but the parent Cleveland Indians upped the ante during the postseason.

The Indians are paying for the Captains to stay in the Eastlake, Ohio, Radisson Hotel & Suites across from the Captains’ ballpark.

“That’s pretty cool. I wouldn’t have been thrown off if they’d put us, like, four in a room in a bad hotel just because they’ve got to put us all up and it gets pretty expensive,” Captains catcher Richard Stock said. “But they gave us some pretty nice living conditions at the Radisson, so that was pretty cool.”

Wish them well The Cougars invite all fans to a team bus sendoff at 10:45 a.m. Friday, as the club prepares to travel to Eastlake, Ohio, for Saturday’s Game 3 and potential fourth and fifth games Sunday and Monday.

The team bus is set to depart Fifth Third Bank Ballpark at 11 a.m. Fans are encouraged to wear Cougars gear and gather outside Gate 3 before then.

Perfect playoff run heads into today’s home finale

“Not really many takeaways from April other than we knew what to expect,” Captains catcher Richard Stock said. “A six-hour drive, stuff like that. Logistics.”

The Cougars and Captains – who hail from suburban Cleveland, 394 miles away – opened the Midwest League championship series Wednesday by seemingly forgetting how they got here.

Shaky pitching and defense marred the first two innings before the Cougars and their bullpen seized command in a 4-3 win.

“Especially coming into the championship series, especially with a lot of young guys on this team,” Wells said. “Everybody’s excited, that kind of stuff. … It takes a little bit of time for everybody to kind of settle into the game.”

The Cougars (96-49) remained unbeaten in the playoffs while handing the Captains (69-75) their first postseason defeat. Game 2 of the best-of-five series is set for 6 p.m. today, when Cougars righty Duane Underwood plans to keep the team with the best record in minor league baseball humming.

“It’s been the same the whole time,” Underwood said. “I mean, we like to win, so we’re going to keep doing what we’re trying to do.”

Lake County quickly silenced the Cougars’ supporters among a crowd of 761 as first baseman Nellie Rodriguez, an occasional teammate of Underwood’s as a teen, smacked an RBI double four batters into the game.

Cougars designated hitter Mark Zagunis erased the deficit as quickly as possible, lining a two-run, opposite-field homer to right two batters into Kane County’s at-bat.

Another youngster, Tseng, didn’t waste the support after yielding three runs – two earned – in the first two innings.

All that after standing one pitch away from a potential early hook. Alas, Tseng’s 34th pitch of the second inning – one shy of the parent Cubs’ organizational limit for an inning – induced a Rodriguez groundout to third with the bases loaded.

“He’s really matured, really come a long way emotionally, physically,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “His demeanor on the mound, everything about his overall game has improved.”

One subtle, if not indirect, reminder of the Cougars’ 2001 MWL championship surfaced when the second base umpire took his position. His name?

Adrian Gonzalez. His appearance? Far less imposing than that of the former Kane County slugger, now of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who led the club to the title 13 seasons ago.

The Cougars also qualified

for the league championship series in 2006 and had not made the playoffs since 2011, when the team was aligned with the Kansas City Royals. A link to the days of the “KC Connection” emerged in Captains right fielder Bradley Zimmer, the parent Cleveland Indians’ first-round pick in June whose brother, Kyle, is a former Cougars right-hander.

These days, Kyle Zimmer is pitching for the Royals’ Triple-A Omaha affiliate in the Pacific Coast League championship, which opened in Reno, Nevada, this week. Zimmer’s father, Eric, attended Wednesday’s game and is set to fly to see Kyle after today’s Game 2.

“Both my parents, I mean, I love them to death,” Zimmer said. “They’ve been supporting me and my brother forever. They love baseball, so it’s definitely an exciting time for them.”

The Cougars can attest to the hoopla. No matter the result, today marks their final home game of what already has been a remarkable season.

A win would make them 58-17 at home in 2014, including the postseason. It also would supply full control of the series.

“The whole goal with this is to win the first two,” Wells said. “That way, you only have to pick up one at their place.”

NORTH AURORA – Garrett Davis didn’t know his own strength, or perhaps that of his 3-wood.

The Geneva senior ripped a top-notch tee shot on hole No. 1 on Wednesday at Fox Valley Golf Course, setting up an eagle that served as the highlight for the victorious Vikings boys golf team, which topped rival Batavia, 151-162, in an Upstate Eight Conference River dual meet.

The first hole was the second-to-last in Davis’ nine-hole round.

“There was a group ahead of us on the green, and I didn’t think I was going to be able to get it there,” Davis said. “It was playing about 260 yards, and I hit a 3-wood to about 1 foot, so I had a tap-in for eagle.

It was probably one of the best shots I’ve ever hit.”

Whatever NFL commissioner Roger Goodell might have stepped in, it’s getting harder and harder by the moment for him to get it off his shoes.

What we have, as of now, is an Associated Press report of a New Jersey state law enforcement official who claims to have sent video of Ray Rice cold-cocking his then fiancée in the elevator of the Revel hotel, and also a voice mail from Roger Goodell an NFL employee confirming receipt of the video and commenting, “You’re right, it’s terrible.”

The report comes less than 24 hours after Goodell elected to go on network TV and tell the world he never had seen that video and that “to his knowledge,” no one in his office had.

In response to the latest AP revelations, we have a statement from NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy in which he said, “We have no knowledge of this. We are not aware of anyone in our office who possessed or saw the video before it was made public on Monday. We will look into it.”

Look quickly, Mr. McCarthy, because your boss is about to be out of a job.

I know Roger Goodell, barely as well as some members of the media, but better than most. There are two huge disconnects in this story for me.

The commissioner never has struck me as dishonest, and until a few hours ago, I never would have believed he would look me in the eye, or look all of America directly in its network TV camera lens, and lie.

The real problem is the upcoming G8 summit, to be held at an estate outside of London.

The leaders attending will be vulnerable because of the many accessible sightlines. If one or more is assassinated, the world’s fragile economy could backslide disastrously. Calling Jack Reacher to the rescue.

But why fly Reacher, by private jet, to Paris and then London?

Reacher knows one of the sharpshooters capable of this kind of skilled marksmanship. He soon discovers evidence at a makeshift shooting range that the former Army soldier, John Kott, has fired over 1,000 50-caliber rounds at distances of nearly one mile.

The rifle weighs 30 pounds, which compounds the skill this feat requires. Kott had been using renderings of Reacher for target practice because Reacher, a former MP, had drawn a murder confession out of Kott 16 years earlier. In “Personal” the sharpshooter requires a lot of support to complete his mission so he procures the protection and cooperation of the local and very formidable organized crime faction.

Here Reacher meets his match and more. Joey, one of the leaders, is 7 feet tall, weighs 300 pounds and is so huge his fat fingers cannot punch out a phone number on his cellphone or fire a gun.

Also of interest, he lives in a supersized house he had built to accommodate his height. When the battle goes inside, Reacher is disoriented by the bizarre scale – average-sized human beings look like little children inside Joey’s house.

Lee Child, a native of England, is back in familiar territory in “Personal.” He has done well with the United States as Reacher’s territory and the same is true of England because, when push comes to shove comes to kick, the scale shrinks down to the essentials.

Reacher is as lively and funny as ever, and this counts for a lot. These books are written from his point of view.

He narrates his every move and thought with wit and energy.

The novels are thrillers but they’re also procedurals where Reacher’s strategic brain is what we’re really trying to discern. Forget it.

He’s always 10 steps ahead of us.

But Reacher isn’t as novel or surprising as he used to be. He’s come a long way from those rich and emotive days back in Florida when he dug ditches.

A change of venue to London is fine but it doesn’t quite do the job. I vote for putting Reacher into some unfamiliar psychological territory, a place where fists and cunning and timing aren’t the first line of offense.

Be careful ‘grazing’ – you could eat more than you should Dear Doctor K: Does eating several smaller meals throughout the day rather than three larger meals help with weight loss?

Dear Reader: We know that eating fewer calories is important to losing weight, but there is less agreement on the specifics. Are three meals a day best for weight loss? Or is it better to eat more – or less – frequently?

We can rule out eating fewer than three times a day. You’ll feel hungry, making it more likely that you will overeat and choose less healthy foods when you do eat.

In comparison, eating at least three times per day can keep you full and reduce hunger – both of which are good for weight loss.

What about eating smaller amounts throughout the day, an approach known as “grazing”?

Limited research suggests that people who graze may feel less hunger than people who eat three larger meals per day. But this does not translate into more effective weight loss.

So, it appears that how often you eat does not affect weight loss. When deciding how often to eat, consider your lifestyle and when and how often you naturally tend to feel hungry. People have different patterns; not

Whatever schedule you choose, these tips should help you lose weight: • Choose foods that satisfy hunger. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins fit the bill.

• Fill up on veggies. Fill half your plate with vegetables, which are high in fiber and nutrients and low in calories.

• Be mindful. Eat when you’re

hungry, not when you’re bored.

(And not, like me, to break up the intensity of work!)

• Avoid high-calorie beverages. Sodas and juice have a lot of calories but few nutrients.

• Replace high-calorie foods with healthier, low-calorie ones.

For example, substitute one cup of pasta with a half-cup of pasta and a half-cup of broccoli.

Finally, try eating slowly when you have a full meal. After you start eating, your body begins to send your brain chemical messages to stop eating. However, these “satiety signals” take about 15 to 20 minutes to kick in.

A person can consume hundreds, even thousands, of calories in 15 to 20 minutes.

An active male and female of age 60 need 2,600 and 2,200 calories per day. If there are 3,000 calories on your plate (not unusual with many restaurants) and you consume that meal slowly, your satiety signals may kick in – and prompt you to save what you have not yet eaten for another meal.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Americans spent over $100 billion on illegal drugs. This is an unthinkable amount of money wasted by human beings trying to escape reality. Add the money spent on “legal” alcohol to the money wasted on “illegal” drugs and the amount might retire the national debt.

I’m always in the kitchen or doing chores and hardly get to interact with any of them. This is becoming a problem for me, and I really need your advice. – Kimberly, Flint, Michigan Dear Kimberly: When adult children continue to live at home, most of them volunteer to help out with their share of the chores, and I’m sure you would be in that group.

You should discuss your feelings with your mother and father and see if things can be worked out so that you will be doing a fair share, but not the bulk of the household chores.

And it is also important to be a family participant in discussions and activities, and this is not happening at the present time.

If your problem can’t be resolved to your satisfaction, it might be a good idea to move out of the house if you can afford it financially. You may be able to find a roommate to share the expenses.

This week we have been looking at deals in which declarer has been trying to maximize his chance of success. Here is another. How should South plan the play in seven hearts after West leads the diamond king?

North’s two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise: at least four-card heart support and game-going values.

When South found three aces opposite, he bid seven hearts, thinking that it would be at worst on a black-suit finesse.

In the red suits, South has five hearts, one diamond and one diamond ruff in his hand. So it seems as though South must ruff his spade losers in the dummy, then find the club queen. But there is another possibility. If he can take four spades and two clubs, that will also result in 13 tricks.

In a vacuum, the percentage play in clubs is to cash the king, then to finesse through West.

In the real world, it is better to lead the jack from hand, hoping that West either covers with the queen or thinks about it. Or, if he plays low smoothly, to rise with dummy’s ace and finesse through East on the way back.

However, although that will work against many players, the best way to combine all of the chances is to cash the ace and king in the side suit with the greater number of cards – here, clubs. If the queen drops, fine; if not, declarer finesses in the other suit.
