bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Faced with declining enrollment and reduced support from Springfield, St. Charles School District 303 officials are considering closing Wasco and Lincoln elementary schools and Haines Middle School, Superintendent Don Schlomann said Wednesday.

Thompson Middle School could be expanded as part of the reorganization.

The four options for officials to consider are: • Close Lincoln and Wasco.

• Close Haines, retrofit Thompson and move sixth grade to the elementary schools.

• Close Wasco, Lincoln and Haines, retrofit and expand Thompson to 1,300 students and keep sixth grade at the middle school.

• Do nothing.

Officials will offer presentations at all of their schools before the facilities options will be presented to the public in a series of 15 community meetings at each elementary and middle school.

The district is offering an online forum at www.d303. org/facilities to allow the public to provide feedback to the school board, Schlomann said.

“I don’t think this is a surprise to the community or our staff,” Schlomann said.

He said administrators want to be as transparent as they can and be open to different ideas.

District enrollment is declining from a high of nearly 14,000 students to 10,000 to 12,000 students projected over the next decade, Schlomann said. Its current enrollment is about 12,550, he said.

St. Charles School District 303 officials are considering options of possibly closing Waso and Lincoln elementary schools and Haines Middle School in order to reduce the district’s costs. Officials said they have to look at these reductions in the wake of declining enrollment, anticipating less money from the state and likely having to take on the cost of teacher pensions. area, where housing is more affordable, than from the outer areas of the district.

The district is faced with losing $3 million of its $8.5 million in state funding, having to take on the cost of teacher pensions at an additional $600,000 to $700,000 each year for 12 years and possibly a property tax freeze.

“If we do nothing, there is no cost savings, no financial flexibility,” Schlomann said.

“We want to preserve programs for students, be sensitive to the pressure on the taxpayers and maintain an annual balanced budget,” Schlomann added.

“Are there options to be proactive, instead of reactive?

Could we free up some dollars to help answer these things rather than having to wait until these things to happen and then scrambling to try to respond to them.”

Lincoln, built in 1928, is the smallest building at 37,000 square feet. Wasco, built in 1950, is the second smallest building at 53,000

square feet. Closing both of them would save $1.7 million a year, but issues at Haines and Thompson middle schools would remain, Schlomann said. Haines is the least energy efficient and the smallest, needing 16 trailers to support its capacity.

Haines would be more expensive to retrofit than Thompson, as both schools are deficient in their science labs.

The basement classrooms and lunch rooms at Thompson would be upgraded, and the school would be air conditioned, he said. This option would save $2.8 million a year in operational costs.

St. Charles Jazz Weekend set to kick off Grammy award-winner Catalano among the performers

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Grammy award-winning performer Frank Catalano will help kick off the fourth annual St. Charles Jazz Weekend, which will run today through Sunday in downtown St. Charles.

Catalano, who was a member of the Elgin Community College Jazz Band while in high school, will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. today at The Filling Station Pub & Grill, 300 W. Main St. St. Charles Jazz Weekend is put on by the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, and the Kane County Chronicle is a media sponsor of the event.

The jazz performances are free.

Ten venues plan to host jazz groups for lunch, dinner and late evening entertainment.

SIDE ISSUES It is important to check “peripheral” (side) vision during an eye exam because blind spots (“scotomas”) could be indications of eye diseases or conditions that require treatment. A “visual field test” determines the full horizontal and vertical range of what a person can see when his or her eyes are trained on a target object straight ahead.

A peripheral vision problem may be detected even though central vision may be fine. In moderate and severe cases of peripheral vision loss, vision may be limited to the extent of producing the sensation of looking through a narrow tube (“tunnel vision”).

Otherwise, the size and position of less visionlimiting blind spots may help to identify glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and other problems.

P.S. A vision field test may prove helpful to athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who want to be aware of any limitations in their field of vision that may be hampering their performance.

From 7 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, actor/singer Tilky Jones

will appear at The Jank Guitar Store, 217 W. Main St., St. Charles, to talk about how he incorporates guitar into all aspects of his career. He is friends with store owner Scott Corbin.

Jones has appeared on TV shows, such as “Nashville,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “The O.C.,’’ and was a member of the teen band Take 5.

“I’m going to be talking with the kids about my experiences in the business and my career,” Jones said. “I’m going

to talk about how learning the guitar has really affected my confidence in a beneficial way.”

Jones said he drove to California about 19 years ago with his first guitar, which he had bought from a thrift store.

“It cost $80, and I didn’t even know how to play it, but always knew that I would eventually figure it out,” Jones said. “I haven’t stopped the love of the process of learning the guitar since I picked it up.”

tar has helped him in his acting career, as well. Jones said on “Nashville,” he recently played a football player who knew how to play guitar.

Jones also was a part of the recent “The Unauthorized O.C. Musical” that was performed at the Montalban Theater in Hollywood, California.

“After learning how to play the guitar, it’s really helped my confidence in terms of walking into a room or an audition, knowing that I have that under my belt,” he said.

Mondays are magical thanks to preschoolers at community center

Pumpkins and gingerbread houses, turkeys and apples, decorations and carols – all present new opportunities for little ones to embrace joy and enhance their learning experience.

Periodically throughout the fall session, the Pottawatomie early childhood program offers Super Afternoon Classes on Mondays designed to extend a child’s day of learning and fun. From “Apple Mania” on Sept. 21 to “Santa’s Workshop” on Dec. 7, these three-hour sessions are jampacked with arts, activities, games and crafts that celebrate seasonal themes. October abounds with Halloween-related activities, such as “Ooey Gooey Gross and Chewy” on Oct. 5; “Ghoulish Happenings” on Oct. 19; and “Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins” on Oct. 26. Thanksgiving is not to be overlooked either, and the “Turkey Time” class Nov. 16 helps children get into the spirit of the holiday by making a take-home craft and playing turkey (as opposed to

Earlville man severely injured in crash

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a single-vehicle crash that severely injured a 39-year-old Earlville man Tuesday night.

Reese Bernier suffered potential life-threatening injuries in the crash on Route 47, near the intersection of Kenmar Drive, according to

a news release issued by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the release, Bernier was driving a 2006 Chevrolet work truck and heading south on Route 47 at 8:04 p.m. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway on the west side of Route 47, the release stated.

“As the vehicle began to maneuver back onto the road, it began to roll, and the driver was ejected from the vehicle,” the release stated. Officials

are investigating the cause of the crash and have not yet determined whether drugs, alcohol or texting had been involved, according to the release.

Bernier was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for life-threatening injuries. As of Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office had not been notified of a change in his condition, Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email.

ROCKFORD – A lawsuit filed Tuesday accuses a priest, formerly of churches in Geneva, Crystal Lake and Johnsburg, of sexually abusing a 7- to 9-year-old child while assigned to an Aurora church.

The lawsuit names the Rev. John C. Holdren, who retired in 1994 from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg where he spent 10 years as a priest.

He also spent six years at St. Thomas the Apostle in Crystal Lake in the 1970s. Holdren also served at St. Peter in Geneva from 1981 to 1983.

According to the lawsuit, Holdren sexually abused the victim, including through inappropriate touching and acts of penetration, when Holdren was a priest at St. Rita of Cascia in Aurora from 1972 to 1973.

The Catholic Diocese of Rockford was notified of the lawsuit Tuesday, spokeswoman Penny Wiegert said, adding the diocese didn’t have a comment as of Wednesday afternoon.

Holdren retired as a pastor in 1994 and remains unassigned and not working as a priest, she said.

A man answering the phone at Holdren’s residence in Aurora said Holdren was not available and to call back later. Later, no one answered and the phone did not have voice mail.

An unnamed 49-year-old man is the sole complainant in the lawsuit, his attorney Tim Freiberg said, adding in other similar cases he’s filed, others have come forward after the fact.

“What I see in a lot of these cases is the memory of the abuse doesn’t come back for years, and it’s usually triggered by an event,” Freiberg

said, pointing in this case, to the man learning that several of his friends also had been abused, moving out of state to Maryland where he began seeing a therapist and reading about other instances of abuse in the Catholic Church.

Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests and Voice of the Faithful, a group that works to support victims of clergy sexual abuse, plan on developing a flier to be distributed at the parishes where Holdren was assigned. The statute of limitations on cases of child sexual abuse is 20 years from the 18th birthday of the child or 10 years from when the abuse is remembered, Freiberg said, adding the five other similar cases he’s handled have survived motions to dismiss based on the statute of limitations.

The lawsuit seeks monetary damages of at least $50,000 from the diocese, St. Rita of Cascia and Holdren, arguing the diocese and church are liable because the policies they adopted “enabled and emboldened” Holdren because he “knew any complaints about his conduct would be minimized and he would be protected from public disclosure.”

The lawsuit also alleges those at the church and diocese had been informed Holdren was a “serious threat to the physical and mental well-being” of children and concealed that knowledge.

The leaders of the diocese “placed concern for the Church’s reputation and financial well-being over the safety and well-being of its parishioners and children everywhere,” the complaint said.

“Twilight Twos” for 2- to 3-year-olds lets mom and dad play games and work on simple craft projects with

their toddlers. And what child wouldn’t love the “Cars, Trucks, Vroom, Vroom, Vroom!” program that celebrates things that move – from fast cars to dump

trucks. Little princesses get their stint in the spotlight during the “Sofia the First and More” program that showcases royalty and the wonderful world of make-be-

‘Adult and Child’ programs help develop skills, hobbies

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva’s 34th Annual Festival of the Vine kicks off Friday, featuring wine, food, arts and crafts among other attractions in the city’s downtown.

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual autumn harvest celebration, which features a Flavor Fare at Fourth and State streets, where 22 local restaurants provide samplings of their food. And SavWay Fine Wines and Spirits will be serving 23 varieties of wine, Chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said.

“That’s the most we’ve ever had,” Rush said.

Wines include Tom Gore Chardonnay, described as “creamy, full-bodied” and Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine from the Niagara Peninsula in Canada, which is described as a sweet dessert wine with

“succulent flavors of honey and peach.”

Foods include steak satay from FoxFire, Baja fish taco from Bien Trucha, stuffed meatballs from Riganato Old World Grille and salty honey pie from The Sugar Path.

“The craft show is back and is always popular,” Rush said. “We could not have wished for better weather ... I think we are going to have big crowds this year. People are going to want to be outside.”

The festival is from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Also adjacent to the Flavor Fare is the main stage of entertainment, starting at 6 p.m. Friday with Backyard Cohort, at noon Saturday with State Street Dance Studio and at noon Sunday with Treble Ahead, according to the schedule.

The Harvest Demo Stage on James Street will offer

a variety of free demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday.

Merchants also offer wine tasting and special events, such as chocolate and wine pairing at both Graham’s and the All Chocolate Kitchen.

RANDY W. LITTLE Born: Feb. 24, 1956 Died: Sept. 5, 2015

Randy W. Little, age 59, of Maple Park, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer, on Saturday, September 5, 2015.

Though the fight would claim his body, it never broke his spirit and Randy is now at rest in Heaven.

He was born February 24, 1956, the son of Randal and Shirley (Trego) Little. Randy grew up in the Warrenville and West Chicago areas and attended local schools.

He began his working career at Swift in St. Charles. Even after the name changed to Armour-Eckrich, Randy continued his tenure for over 40 years until his declining health brought him home into the care of his family.

Although Randy was a dedicated union man at work, eventually becoming a Negotiator and Chief Steward, nothing could compare to the dedication and love he had for Julie McAdams, whom he met at work. Their relationship began

in 1979 but bloomed into marriage on May 25, 1985. They began their new life together in Maple Park and eventually welcomed their daughter, Mackeinze, who made their family complete. Many years and a million memories were to follow and filled their home with the warmth of love and laughter.

Randy was a proud member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union for many years and although they never had a formal name, his “bags group” played weekly and traveled far and wide to compete in tournaments.

Randy and Julie had a fun life together, but it never compared to life with their daughter. Mackeinze was the apple of his eye and she could do no wrong (even if it was putting his hair in pigtails)! His family was as close as a family could be, especially his brother-inlaw Joe Heyob, who was the perfect partner for bags and to cheer on their beloved Chicago Bears.

When it came to baseball, Randy and Joe couldn’t have been more at odds. Randy loved his Chicago Cubs and never let an opportunity pass to poke fun at Joe’s White Sox. The loss of Joe hit Randy hard, but the void was partially filled by his “bag buddies” who stood by his side even when he was too ill to throw.

Randy loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping as a family. His favorite destination was Platteville, WI, so he could be close to the Chicago Bears training camp. If you ever had to go anywhere, you could find no better “co-pilot” than Randy. He was at ease on the road, whether it was long weekends or long trips across the country, sometimes even without a destination. At Christmas time, Randy would drive any distance to see the best light display of the season and

was a master at cutting down the annual Christmas Tree in Oregon, IL. Hours upon hours were spent finding just the perfect one, even if it meant missing football on T.V. Randy’s hands were always working, even into the last days, creating master pieces out of wood. Whether it was a trellis, a bird house or the biggest best tree house you have ever seen, complete with additions built for his grandson Nolan, each creation was uniquely his. Nolan, who became his “right hand man” in the workshop, loved to be with his “papa” in the shop and to learn from the “master.” Randy was never happier than when his grandson was by his side, especially when he helped to finish projects before Randy became too ill to continue. Randy may be gone, but the legacy he leaves will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Julie Little; his daughter, Mackeinze and her son Nolan; his father-in-law, Lloyd McAdams; a sister-in-law, Cindy Heyob; one brother-in-law, Steve (Amy) McAdams; many nieces, nephews and a community of close friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Randal and Shirley; one sister, Kathy Ramirez; his motherin-law, Dorothy McAdams; and brother-in-law, Joe Heyob.

The family will host a celebration of Randy’s life at Bootlegger’s at 107 Main St., Maple Park, on Saturday, September 12, 2015, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Private family burial will follow cremation at a later date.

The family wishes to extend their most heartfelt thanks to their family, friends and community for the unwavering support since Randy’s battle began. That support allowed the family to keep Randy in the

comfort of his home and they will forever be grateful for that opportunity and therefore are not asking for any contributions.

Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Gericke, age 82, of Geneva, passed away Monday, September 7th, 2015 at her home, surrounded by family.

She was born June 11, 1933 in Belvidere, the daughter of William and Mary Elizabeth (Sullivan) Grady.

Liz graduated from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee with a degree in education. She taught for many years at Coultrap Middle School in Geneva. Liz grew up watching her father coach the Belvidere football team and developed a lifelong love of football. She also enjoyed working in her garden and served as President of the Geneva Garden Club. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and loved visiting Ireland. Liz found great joy spending time with her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Liz is survived by her children, Ed (Katherine) of Geneva, Kai (Frank Rachwalski) Gericke of Elmhurst, Stephanie (Bruce) Simpson of Glen Ellyn and Megan (David) Bogash of Geneva; grandchildren, Chad (Ashley) Gericke, Benjamin Camacho, William Camacho, Louise Simpson and Kevin Rachwalski; brothers, William (Paddy) Grady and David Grady, both of Rockford; and many other dear relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Edward, who passed away in 1995.

Lincoln currently has 245 students, Wasco has 377, and Haines has 1,039. The teaching staff would be reassigned to different schools, Schlomann said, as the number of teachers is determined the number of students.

Closing the two elementary schools and Haines would displace 23 employees, including the principals, assistant principals, secretaries, librarians, social workers and custodial staff, Schlomann said.

GENEVA – First-term state Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva, has begun circulating petitions for re-election to his 65th District legislative seat.

In a news release, Andersson stated he wants to continue the efforts he has begun.

“Unbalanced budgets and increasing debts continue to plague the people of this great state,” Andersson stated in the release. “We must continue to fight those who would overspend and pass unbalanced budgets without regard for the devastating consequences such actions have on our people.”

Andersson was elected in November 2014. In his first term, Andersson introduced bills to enact term limits, a fair mapping process and election reform. The spring primary is set for March 15.

“We need citizen legislators, not career politicians,” Andersson stated in the release.

“Entrenched politicians care more for their own positions than for good government.”

Andersson also refused to accept the pension plan and health care offered to legislators, saying such perks are “part of the problem that creates career politicians.”

Elburn looks to limit solicitors

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said village residents need not feel powerless when they see solicitors approaching.

Smith said residents would be doing the police department a favor by calling 911 if they encounter rude or pushy solicitors who appear to be unregistered.

According to village policy, solicitors are required to register with the village, but only two companies are registered. Village officials said those companies are issued permit cards, which they should be able to produce if representatives are asked.

“People have to help us out and call us when they’re there,” Smith said. “They don’t have to feel uncomfortable. It would help them out if they would report any unregistered solicitors.”

The topic came up at a Committee of the Whole meeting after Tuesday night’s Elburn Village Board meeting. Trustees are consid-

ering altering the village’s ordinance, which currently allows registered solicitors to operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, except for national holidays. The hours are likely to change, allowing solicitors to go from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, again excluding holidays.

Trustee Jeff Walter, who lives in the Blackberry Creek subdivision, said neighbors have reported pushy and aggressive solicitors throughout the day. He called it a “hot issue” and said residents don’t want to be disturbed later at night, when kids might be getting ready for bed.

Trustee Pat Schuberg said a key was to be sure residents felt empowered to ask for a permit, but Walter said that hasn’t been happening.

“A lot of people don’t feel empowered. … They don’t want to be bothered,” Walter said.

Village officials said residents are able to display a “no solicitors” sticker, and they can get them at no cost.

But some trustees said some

residents don’t want to discourage neighborhood kids or other legitimate charitable groups from approaching them.

“You don’t want them,” Trustee John Krukoff said of most unregistered solicitors.

“But you do want the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts.”

Smith said there was “a popular feeling” among residents that they don’t want to restrict the fundraising efforts of youths. But he said that’s different than a situation in which a van pulls up and several people get out and walk through a neighborhood.

“They don’t have permits,” Smith said. “They are selling magazines or steaks or whatever they’re doing. Solicitors of that type are going to go to places like Blackberry Creek, where there are a lot of houses in a fairly small area.”

Smith’s message: If residents feel intimidated or uncomfortable, they should call the police.

“It happens all over,” Smith said. “It doesn’t just happen in Elburn.”

Water rescue in Batavia turns out to be false report

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia firefighters Wednesday afternoon responded to what turned out to be a false report of two young kids who were thought to have fallen out a boat in Braeburn Marsh.

At about 2:30 p.m., the department responded to a call suggesting two youths fell out of their boat in Braeburn Marsh, near the Trader Joe’s store on Fabyan Parkway, Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said.

“They were having trouble in the water,” Banker said.

My college beginnings BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina While walking through campus on my first day at college the most rewarding moment was coming to the realization I no longer was surrounded by the same cluster of students I grew up with.

My first few weeks at Waubonsee Community College have been nothing but new experiences. Thankfully, most things have gone smoothly, besides having to wait in a textbook exchange line the first week of school because I accidentally got the wrong book editions for two of my classes. College freshman problems, I suppose.

Although community college is different from high school, I’m adjusting easily. Although, it’s strange to not have a bell to begin or end class. I often find myself waiting to be dismissed by a little ding, but to my amazement every time, there’s no beautiful ringing sound like in high school.

Instead, it’s all up to the professors when class begins and ends. One day, my biology professor dismissed my class 15 minutes early. Let’s just say I had no idea what to do with my time. I just found the nearest bench and pulled a granola bar out of my backpack to munch on.

It’s been a change of routine, since I no longer have to get up before the birds at 6 a.m.

This semester, I attend classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 in the morning until 1:45 in the afternoon, whereas on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I end by noon. I’ve dedicated Fridays to being “homework” days, since I have no classes on Fridays. That’s another thing, I have three-day weekends every week, which, I have no complaints about.

However, I could do without the 22-minute commute to school every day. That number is exact, as I’ve timed myself several times driving from Waubonsee to my house. It’s always the same time. Sorry, I don’t take the expressway.

Yes, college is different, my dear friends. Only in college can I pick when my classes begin and who my professors are going to be. Only in college is there a bounce house in the middle of campus, for a reason that’s unknown to most of the students. Only in college will you hear professors swear without students thinking twice.

While it may seem strange, ever since starting college, it just hasn’t felt like school.

Maybe it’s the fact I’m not stuck in a building for seven hours a day and being forced to make poster board projects in groups to be presented to the class. It could be because I’m now eating lunch at my house every day, instead of a cafeteria. Or it just might be because of the fact I’m not seeing the same group of Batavia students all the time. With that, I no longer see some of my good friends since they’re now miles away.

As I stroll through the beautiful outdoor campus each day, I look around. There are several different Waubonsee buildings around me that I’ve yet to memorize all the names of, a lake is off to the left of me, and there are thousands of new faces in front of me.

I got my wish. Nothing’s quite familiar anymore.

Carly Fiorina, on the rise

By MARC A. THIESSEN Special to The Washington Post Thanks her breakout debate performance and subsequent rise in the polls, Carly Fiorina has now earned a chance to tangle with Donald Trump and the other top-tier presidential candidates on the main stage.

A new Monmouth University poll finds 67 percent of Republican voters said we need “a president from outside government who can bring a new approach to Washington,” while just 26 percent want “someone with government experience who knows how to get things done.” Little wonder that in Iowa, Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson are tied with 23 percent of the vote each, while Fiorina is in third with 10 percent — meaning a 56 percent majority is backing candidates who have never held elective office.

Fiorina is the least well known of the outsiders

leading the polls – 43 percent of the GOP electorate still does not know enough about her to give an opinion of her – which means she is well positioned for a breakout performance.

“Going into [the last] debate, less than 40 percent of Republicans had ever heard my name,” she said.

“So first, it was an opportunity to introduce myself.

But I think second, what people saw was, ‘You know what, this lady could be president.’ ” Fiorina has one credential the other outsiders in the race can’t match: foreign policy experience.

She has a top level security clearance and served as a member and then chair of the CIA’s External Advisory Board from 2007 to 2009.

Fiorina’s grasp of national security issues was on display when she and Trump were both quizzed on foreign policy by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt last week. Trump could not explain the differ-

ence between Hamas and Hezbollah and had no clue what Iran’s notorious Quds Force, was — confusing it with the Kurds. Fiorina, by contrast, aced the test.

Trump likes to boast how smart he is, but Fiorina can boast a Stanford University degree and her rise to become chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, one of the biggest technology firms in the country.

Now she’s challenging the political status quo — and she believes she can overtake the outsiders ahead of her.

Americans could possibly see her, hear her and listen to her Wednesday night during a GOP debate on CNN.

St. Charles woman is County’s first West Nile case in 2015 KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A 51-yearold St. Charles woman last month was recorded as the first human case of the West Nile virus in Kane County this year, according to a news release issued by the Kane County Health Department.

This year, the Kane County Department has reported one dead bird testing positive for West Nile, and there have been 16 mosquito batches that have tested positive, according to information posted at www.kanehealth.com.

Last year, there was one human case, and there were

no human cases in 2013.

“This summer has been relatively hot and dry, the perfect combination for the Culex mosquito, the species that is known to carry the virus,” the release stated. “And it is possible that we will see more cases in people before the season is over.”

According to the release, West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Call of the wild National Wilderness Month a time to explore great outdoors

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com Of man’s connection to the outdoors, early wilderness preservationist John Muir said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

The preservation of America’s great stretches of open space has remained an ongoing campaign since the days of Muir.

In an effort to honor the work of previous generations of environmental stewards, last year President Barack Obama proclaimed that September is National Wilderness Month, a time when the public is encouraged to explore the great outdoors as a means of inspiring future generations to continue to preserve the planet.

As such, the Kane County Chronicle is taking a look at the Forest Preserve District of Kane County specifically, and its more than 20,000 acres of property, which provides ample opportunities for families to hit the trails this month, and heed the call of the wild.

A family affair

Camping and hiking enthusiast Kelly Gagne of Campton Township has been exploring Kane County forest preserves with her husband and two children, ages 6 and 8, for years.

Having purchased a home in the area for its accessibility to trails, Gagne said she loves the local forest preserves, especially LeRoy Oakes, because they provide an opportunity for her children to fall in love with the world the way she did when she was a kid.

“We need to stay connected to the world and we need to be good stewards,” Gagne said. “And that [my kids] learn from an early age how important the environment is – to protect all of these cool animals and the bugs and birds and all of those things – if they internalize that at an early age, then I think they will be better stewards as their generation is making decisions about how things should be done and should we have open spaces?”

With a penchant for exploring America’s wild places – having backpacked sections of the Appalachian Trail, hiked 40 miles across Isle Royal in Lake Superior and spent five days in the Alaskan wilderness – Gagne spends a lot of time when at home with her family on the trails, participating in nature programs and hiking through local forest preserves.

“The forest preserve programs, they just do such a wonderful job engaging people of all different ages,” said Gagne, who has participated in about 12 programs, visited 16 of Kane County’s forest preserves and utilizes the trails three to four times per month. “What I really like about the programs is that they introduce you to forest preserves that you wouldn’t get to otherwise.”

The Twilight Spider Hike, Bat Watch and Maple Sugaring Days are some of the forest preserve programs in which Gagne’s family has participated in the past. “[The programs are] great exercise; it’s good for their minds; it encourages creativity and the idea of the impact we all have – every person big or small,”

Musings from a naturalist

Ben Katzen of Elburn has been a naturalist for 15 years. He believes that striking a balance between preserving nature and wildlife whilst providing recreation for the community is an important part of the preservation process.

“If we didn’t set aside land in the form of forest preserves, we would risk overdeveloping, and then there would be no place for people to go for peace and quiet and to connect with nature,” said Katzen, who works at the Creek Bend Nature Center at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

Katzen also works with the nature programs department to provide year-round activities for

children, families, Scouts, adults and seniors.

Of the roughly 75 preserves the Forest Preserve District of Kane County has to offer, Katzen said his favorites are: Burnidge Forest Preserve and Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin, which features 600 acres of rolling terrain, oak woodlands and nine miles of hiking trails; Campton Forest Preserve, which offers wooded hilltops, marshes and prairies; and the Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia, which features Nelson Lake Marsh, diverse wildlife – such as mink and pelicans – and the county’s finest wetlands.

In order to become more acquainted with the area’s preserves, the Take A Hike program “encourages families to get out and visit the multitude of forest preserves we have,” Katzen said.

“And we do that in the form of a scavenger hunt ... .”

“The bike trails are one of the highlights of the Kane County forest preserves,” Katzen said, adding that the Fox River Trail and Great Western Trail have been ranked among some of the best in the country, according to traillink.com. “You can ride along the river and see the beautiful landscapes that our area offers.”

It’s fitting that September is National Wilderness Month, because Katzen said he enjoys the transitional months during autumn, when the foliage visibly changes and animals begin preparing for the colder weather.

“Fall migration is an exciting time when many birds are passing through, such as warblers, that are only here during migration season,” Katzen said.

Cooler climate brings freshness to Qupé wine Few have ridden the Rhone Ranger bandwagon as long as Bob Lindquist.

The Qupé founder, winemaker and partner saw potential in the cooler regions of California’s central coast in 1982. With transverse mountain ranges that run east to west, the influence of the frigid Pacific Ocean is prominent.

Pinot noir grapes thrive in the cold breeze off the Pacific, the foggy morning and evening conditions and moderate daytime temperatures.

But, while his contemporaries found a niche for pinot, Lindquist was drawn to the wines of the northern Rhone.

He turned to syrah, grenache, roussanne, marsanne and has made elegant wines since.

Winemaker spotlight

While others passed on a vintage for not being ripe enough, Lindquist savored its uniqueness.

“I appreciate warm-climate syrah,” Lindquist said.

“But I tend to like the northern Rhone. Its elegance, balance and structure. I seem to like the ‘off vintages’ best.

They aren’t so heavily ripe. I like the freshness in the wine.

With cooler climate syrah you can really dial in the balance,

‘Killer K’s’ lead St. Charles East past Batavia

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East may have been slightly distracted with Wednesday being the middle of its homecoming week, but the girls volleyball team wasn’t going to let that affect the outcome of its match with Batavia.

East overcame a slow start, led by outside hitters Klaudia Sowizral and Kyla Augustine, to take care of Batavia, 25-22, 25-14, in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division showdown.

Sowizral, a sophomore, had all five of her kills in the first set, which didn’t see the Saints (9-0, 2-0 UEC River) lead until they took a 22-21 advantage. Sowizral had her final kill as part of East scoring nine of the last 11 points of the first set.

“We just needed to get our game together,” Sowizral said. “We all might have been a little distracted with homecoming and everything, but once we settled down, we played much better.”

Sowizral wasn’t the only offensive weapon that Batavia and coach Lori Trippi-Payne had to put up with, but once Augustine found a rhythm, it was hard for the Bulldogs (5-4, 1-1) to keep up.

The junior Augustine had four of her kills in the second set, which helped East take an early 8-2 advantage, prompting a timeout from Trippi-Payne.

“You could see defensively we were struggling,” Trippi-Payne said. “They were getting perfect balls set to them, and it was very tough for us to defend. We don’t have the offensive to match them. We have some, but it’s not consistent enough. We let them back in the first game and they took off from there.”

With the nine straight wins, coach Jennie Kull has felt much better about where her team is now since the beginning of the season. Kull knows there were certainly execution mistakes that took place Wednesday night, but the bottom line is that the Saints can chalk another tally up into the win column.

Kull has seen both Sowizral and Augustine be two of the more consistent players she’s coached this season.

“They both played great tonight,” Kull said. “They’ve come on and have really played consistent for us. It’s good to have well-rounded players. We have a great bench as well with a lot of options. The girls are just having a good time right now, and when you have fun, you play so much better.”

The expectations Kull has set since she has been in charge has set the tone for the East volleyball program and this team knows what is expected of them each time they step on the court.

But aside from the expectations, East was ignited

by the play of several girls Wednesday night. But Sowizral and Augustine really set the tone to remain unbeaten this year.

“I think once one girl gets going, it helps all of us,” Augustine said. “This team has such great chemistry and feeds off each other’s energy so well. We all play for each other, and it’s definitely very motivating when someone gets going to keep that energy on the court with everyone.”

Batavia had their share of bright spots, but inconsistent serving was the story of the night for the Bulldogs. Trippi-Pay saw her squad fail service three straight times when trying to climb back into the second set.

Coming off wins against

Glenbard South and Larkin, the Bulldogs were expecting a much better effort, and will get a chance to get right back to work, hosting Naperville North tonight.

East will head to the Prairie Ridge Invite in Crystal Lake this weekend with that zero still in the loss column.

While that really isn’t the primary concern for Augustine and the Saints, they know confidence plays a big part in continuing to be successful.

“I think we can honestly be as good as good as we think we can be,” Augustine said. “As long as we believe in ourselves and keep the mindset that we are as good as any team we play. It’s definitely a mental game as much as a physical one for us.”

DeKALB – After falling behind early in the first set, the St. Charles North girls volleyball team never trailed again, sweeping DeKalb, 25-19, 25-15, in the nonconference matchup on Wednesday night.

Coming into the match, the North Stars (9-1) were on a high. They had just beaten Geneva, one of the better teams in the area in convincing fashion.

DeKalb (4-4) played the North Stars tough for the first few minutes of the first set. But after losing five of the

first seven points, North proceeded to reel of 12 straight points on its way to a six-point victory in the first set.

“We talked about making sure we kept our emotions in check tonight,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said. “Last night was great, but the celebrating stops here. We knew DeKalb was a strong team and if they came out slow, they could roll over us. We wanted to make sure we played with the same passion and focus that we left the court with last night.”

Same winning feel at NIU for Santacaterina ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber DeKALB – Daniel Santacaterina is going back to the beginning.

After three years as the starting quarterback at Geneva High School, Santacaterina is in the midst of his freshman season at Northern Illinois, where he’s low down on the depth chart and might not see the field during a game this year. But that doesn’t mean something went wrong. It’s the nature of the beast. From star senior to new freshman, it’s what most first-year college football players are going through this season. Santacaterina was ready for this, but that hasn’t made it easy.

“The biggest challenge for me has definitely been adjusting to (the concept of when you’re) in high school Daniel Santacaterina you’re the guy, in college you’ve got to start from the bottom, you’re a freshman again,” Santacaterina said.

“So you’ve got to build yourself up again, got to get better, got to get yourself up to speed with the competition. Most people just aren’t there yet, and that’s OK, that’s just part of the process. You’ve got to trust the process and know it’s going to come.

“That’s been the biggest part is getting the offense down,” he added. “There’s a lot more things to know in the offense than in high school, of course. It’s been hard, but you’ve got to trust it. I’m sure it will be second nature.”

Santacaterina is one of six quarterbacks on the NIU roster, and three have at least a year more experience than he does. Two – starter Drew Hare and backup Anthony Maddie – are redshirt juniors. Hare is in his fourth year in the program and has the offense down pat, while Santacaterina and the team’s other two true freshman QBs still are in a learning mode.

“This is a big-time pro-

gram, and there are a lot of established players here that have been here for a while,” Santacaterina said. “And it’s very competitive. The guys that are playing right now, they went through this process when they were freshmen, and now they’re the guys, they’re the guys that are on the field on Saturday. I think you’ve got to trust it, and eventually it’ll all work out. You’ve got to learn from the guys that have been there before. They know what they’re doing.”

The good news for Santacaterina is he’s in a program that’s used to winning football games and used to producing prolific college quarterbacks such as Jordan Lynch and Chandler Harnish. Hare could be next. He likens the winning atmosphere to Geneva, which has established its own tradition of success on the football field over the past decade or so. Santacaterina got to experience his first game as a member of the Huskies’ winning tradition this past Saturday, when NIU bested UNLV, 38-30.

“It was a similar feeling at Geneva. We had a winning tradition there. Coming here, it’s nice to be part of a winning program and just going into Saturdays expecting to win, putting in the work and everyone’s got one goal, that’s to win every game,” he said.

“It’s definitely exciting.”

One day, Santacaterina might be the next in a string of successful NIU signal-callers.

But in all likelihood that day won’t come in 2015. It might be a sudden change for the former three-year starter in high school, but it’s a change he was expecting. Now it’s just about working his way back up the ladder.

“I was prepared for this. I knew going into a big-time program like this, you’re not going to come in and start right away,” Santacaterina said. “I know this is best for me. I’m very happy where I’m at, and I know if I keep working hard good things will come.”

After catching a break on a shot with just over three minutes left, Kaneland earned up a draw with DeKalb to start Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division play.

Coach Scott Parillo said it was “a lucky shot and it went in,” but the Knights have taken positives away from the result at the very least, with the draw making their record 1-3-2, and now 0-01 in NI Big 12 East play.

But after losing three of their first four games, the Knights have gone a couple games in a row without a defeat and it comes at a good time with four games coming against East Division opponents with the Cedarburg (Iowa) Tournament separating those contests.

“I think that our biggest flaw was that we didn’t implement the game plan that we had set in place. Our game plan was simple, but we didn’t execute it.

Claire Anderson and Daley Krage led the North charge with seven kills apiece, while Jaclyn Taylor added three kills of her own to go along with 12 assists.

Hawkins said it was the first time her team had played in the environment they did Wednesday night. The DeKalb student section was directly behind North and seemed to fluster the North Stars for the first few points.

But once they regained control, Lauren Caprini stepped to the service line and helped reel off several points to get North in control.

From that point on, Hawkins and the North Stars loved the atmosphere.

“I told the girls to relish it,” Hawkins said. “It’s not very often you see a student section like that. So it ended up being a really fun game to play in because that sort of amps up the intensity and makes it exciting to play in.”

North never looked back and has now won four matches in a row. North will host Crystal Lake South on Friday before heading to Batavia next Tuesday for another conference showdown.

Dear Abby: At what point does a parent no longer have the right to know who their child’s friends are?

I have three grown daughters, all on their own, living on the other side of the country. During a recent visit home for their grandmother’s birthday, I asked each of them to give me all of their friends’ phone numbers, in case I couldn’t reach them. I also wanted to know who they were exactly, how well they knew them, etc. I was simply thinking of their safety. If I can’t reach my girls, I want to know who might have seen them last and, if need be, give that information to the police.

Abby, all three of them told me NO! They said they are grown women and can take care of themselves, and besides, if, God forbid, they didn’t want to answer their phone when I called, I sure didn’t need to be pestering their friends.

They say they are adults, and

Dr. Wallace: I have a sister-in-law who has the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. This girl is married to my brother and is now having treatment from a doctor specializing in eating disorders. Our family is praying that she will once again become the happy, healthy young lady who joined our family a year ago.

We know that some anorexia victims actually starve themselves to death. This is scary.

My sister-in-law is 20 and has been eating “like a bird” for over six months. What percent of victims of anorexia actually die from the disorder, and is it a teenage problem or can anyone get it? How long does it usually last? – Curious, El Paso, Texas

I would appreciate your thoughts. – Renee In Oregon Dear Renee: I agree that you are their mother, but you are not your daughters’ parole officer. They are self-supporting, self-sufficient adults. Perhaps if you were less overbearing, your daughters would be living closer, would answer their phones more often when you call and would open up to you about their friendships.

Frankly, I think you should apologize for giving them such a heavy-handed third degree.

Dear Abby: My wife and I had dinner with some other couples at an elegant, white linen tablecloth restaurant. After the meals were brought to the table, someone said, “We need to pray.” In this quiet, candlelit setting, a “Bless us, oh Lord ...” was spoken aloud by most of the people in our party, causing heads to turn at a number of nearby tables. Undoubtedly, the din sounded like chanting. I was embarrassed.

Fun in the sun can have unforeseen consequences Dear Doctor K: Does spending time in the sun pose a threat to our eyes? What can we do to protect ourselves?

Dear Reader: Yes, it does. And to a large extent, the damage may already be done. I spoke to Dr. Louis Pasquale, an ophthalmologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He noted that spending a lot of time in the sun without sunglasses when you’re young may put you at risk for developing eye problems when you’re older. The damage would probably be done in your 20s and 30s.

We don’t know exactly how the sun’s ultraviolet rays cause eye damage. And we also don’t know for certain whether sunlight directly causes certain common eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

But there’s good evidence that sun exposure can cause an eye condition that often leads to other problems. This condition is called “exfoliation syndrome.”

Exfoliation syndrome leaves tiny, dandruff-like flakes in the eye. A buildup of these flakes clogs the eye’s natural drains, which can lead to other problems.

Worldwide, it is the most common

There are no symptoms of exfoliation syndrome until you start to lose your sight from other eye problems. There’s no cure – but there are treatments for the other conditions that may result.

The best way to stop exfoliation syndrome, glaucoma, AMD and cataracts from robbing you of your vision is to discover these conditions before they progress.

You can do that with a comprehensive eye exam, done by an ophthalmologist. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends comprehensive eye exams: • Every two to four years for people ages 40 to 55; • Every one to three years for people ages 55 to 65; • Every one to two years for people ages 65 and older.

People with risk factors for eye problems – those with diabetes, for example – may need more frequent eye exams.

Finally, it’s never too late to protect your eyes from further sun damage. You can do that with the right pair of sunglasses.

Foremost is to make sure the sunglasses protect against ultraviolet rays, both UVA and UVB. You’ll want 95 to 100 percent blockage.

You may also consider buying polarized lenses, which reduce the glare from water, sand and snow.

Having been raised in “sunny” southern California, I spent a great deal of time in the sun during the first 20 years of my life. I didn’t wear sunglasses for most of those years. In my 60s I developed cataracts in both eyes, one of which was bad enough to require surgery. I also developed damage to the retina of one eye, which my ophthalmologist calls “accelerated aging.”

My ophthalmologist tells me he can’t be sure if these conditions were influenced by my failure to protect my eyes from the sun when I was young. If he can’t be sure, neither can I. But I’ll bet they were.

Anorexia nervosa is a serious illness; it can be overcome, but usually only with professional assistance. The condition is likely to last at least a year, and for some people it persists for as long as 15 years.

Six percent of those with a serious case of anorexia die from it, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. And 86 percent of those suffering from this disorder became afflicted while in their teens.

In today’s deal, East drew a conclusion that had no validity and gave away a game. South was in three no-trump. West led the spade queen in answer to his partner’s overcall. What should have happened?

The auction was straightforward. East was right to overcall one spade for two reasons: His side might have been able to outbid the opponents, and to help partner with his opening lead.

Then South jumped to three notrump with sufficient points for game and two spade stoppers.

At the table, East encouraged with the spade 10 under his partner’s queen. However, he is still waiting for his partner to lead another spade. East’s assumption that his partner had started with two spades was not valid.

South allowed the spade queen to hold the first trick, took West’s diamond shift, and played on clubs to establish 10 tricks. He lost only one spade and two clubs.

As you have noticed, East should have overtaken the spade queen with his king.

This costs a trick only when West has the spade queen and jack, which is most unlikely given South’s jump to three no-trump.
