Owner plans to spend more time with her children

Eliza Jane, 322 W. Main St., St. Charles, will be closed for business before its lease ends Sept. 30, owner Megan Hernandez said. A special celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 19, and the last day of spa services will be Sept. 21. A storewide half-off sale will begin on Sept. 19 and continue until everything is sold, she said.

Eliza Jane opened in February of 2007 as a combination boutique, day spa and etiquette school. Hernandez said she is closing the shop to focus on being a full-time mom to her sons, Theo, 3, and Beau, 1.

“They both grew up here at the store,” Hernandez said.

“It’s bittersweet.”

Hernandez on Sunday announced the closing in a Facebook post, and many of her customers commented on the

Hernandez said in her previous job at Arthur Andersen, she used to travel all the time and was never in St. Charles.

The store was a way for her to make roots within the community.

The Sept. 19 event is a chance for residents to say goodbye to the store, but the focus is on making it a happy occasion with food and fun, Hernandez said.

“We’re calling it a graduation because we’re moving on to bigger and better things hopefully someday,” she said.

company Advantax, a corporate property-tax consulting firm. LeVan founded the

company in 1994 when he lived in Wheaton, and its headquarters has always been located

at the Timbers Professional Center, 200 W. River Drive, in St. Charles.

LeVan also spends three to four weeks a year with “Serve the World,” an initiative established by First Baptist Church of Geneva to identify local and global partners and connect them with resources. Recent projects include a home for disabled young men in Ukraine and a skate parkbased church in Ecuador.

Bruce McEvoy, pastor of family and service at First Baptist, said that LeVan’s compassion has been an influence on his life. McEvoy has joined

LeVan on some of the Serve the World trips.

“His motivation is not to experience it for experience’s sake, his motivation is to step into opportunities to make a difference,” McEvoy said of LeVan. LeVan even started a charity of his own, Harriette’s Song, in 2007, which is focused on helping children. In the past year, the group helped build a small orphanage in Nigeria called Grandmother’s House, which pairs children whose parents have died of AIDS with a grandparent. A portion of Advantax’s bottom line every quarter goes toward Harriette’s Song, LeVan said.

LeVan might seem like a busy traveler now, but that was not always the case.

Before his son graduated from high school, LeVan said he took fewer trips so he could be one of those parents who could be there for all the school sports games and events.

“My traveling is not more important than my relationship with God and my relationship with family,” LeVan said.

T. CHARLES – When David LeVan earlier this year appeared in an American Airlines in-flight video and magazine, friends all over the country took notice.

LeVan’s pals would take a picture of the video and message him that they saw him. When LeVan, 49, was on the flight himself, some of his fellow passengers would gawk.

“One girl looked at the magazine, then looked back at me and told another girl, ‘I’m telling you that’s the guy,’ ” said LeVan, a Campton Hills resident.

LeVan’s image became a regular fixture on American Airlines flights after he became the second-place winner of American Airlines’ 12th annual American Way Road Warrior Contest in 2013.

LeVan beat out thousands of other contestants to receive thousands of AAdvantage miles for future flights. He and the other top-four finalists were flown to the Caribbean island of Curaçao in January for a video and photo shoot.

The contest requires entrants to answer multiple essay questions about themselves, and LeVan had picked up some of his writings from years before to complete the application. He did not expect to be picked as one of the finalists, let alone to be notified during a business trip.

“I was absolutely shocked,” LeVan said.

LeVan estimates that over the past few years he has logged between 105,000 and 110,000 miles on airplane flights. He has a goal called “50 by 50 by 50” where he plans to visit 50 countries and all 50 states by the time he turns 50 in March. In July, he was able to get to North Dakota, the last state on the list. He’s visited 44 countries and counting.

‘Something has to be kept alive’ Ceremony to mark 9/11 continues at Elburn man’s home

LBURN – Paul Wdowicki said he can remember the beginning of his 9/11 tribute garden. It began when he lived in Des Plaines, and he said it was made up of a small triangle of flowers and plants to honor those who died in the attacks that took place on Sept. 11, 2001.

Wdowicki, who was a volunteer firefighter for the Glenview Rural Fire Department for 15 years, said he got the idea to do the tribute right after the attacks happened.

He continued that tribute when he moved to Elburn nine years ago, and his garden began to grow.

He said at first, his wife asked him why he decided to put the garden right in front of the house. But, he said, on days when one can see birds and butterflies in the garden, the answer is clear.

“Then there is no question why we planted it right in front of the house,” Wdowicki said.

Wdowicki again will welcome fire officials, neighbors friends and anyone else who would like to visit at 10 a.m.

Thursday at his home, 405 N. Second St., Elburn. He will continue the tradition of hosting a ceremony to mark the anniversary of 9/11.

Wdowicki, 82, said he plans to continue the garden and the ceremony as long as he can handle it.

He said it is becoming more difficult each year to maintain the garden, but he lauded the Explorers group from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, saying a big group came by to offer a significant amount of help.

He also said Lowe’s, Wasco Nursery and Wiltse’s in Maple Park have offered support for years.

Rob Stevens, the lead adviser for the Explorers, said the Explorers look forward to working on the garden each year.

Wdowicki said he always hopes for a big turnout for the ceremony each year. To Wdowicki, it’s important that people pause to remember the

9/11 attacks and those who lost their lives.

“Something has to be kept alive, as far as 9/11 is concerned, as far as I’m concerned,” Wdowicki said.

by Sugar Grove resident Mike Fagel, an author, a teacher and an emergency management expert who was at the scene at 9/11 in New York.

Fagel said he is “at a loss” to explain why there are not more ceremonies marking the anniversary of the event each year. Fagel praised Wdowicki for putting the event on each year.

“I think it’s very cool that he does that,” Fagel said. “I have never met the man, but I laud him. What he’s trying to do is keep the memory alive, honor the victims and honor the memory. It is absolutely tremendous.”

Batavia aldermen recommend extension for Walgreens project

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting recommended giving Batavia Enterprises a 120-day extension of the redevelopment agreement for the new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia as the company works out a lease agreement with Walgreens corporate officials.

“It should give us enough time to get everything done,” Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey told aldermen. “God willing, it will be much sooner than that.”

Aldermen recommended an extension of both the redevelopment agreement and the real estate transfer agreement, which is part of the redevelopment agreement. Batavia En-

terprises needs the extension because it is trying to get its lease and financing finalized for the Walgreens project.

“It’s a complicated site and it’s a complicated deal,” Dempsey said. “We are very close. We don’t have a signed lease yet.”

Dempsey said the new Walgreens store could open by October 2015 if the project starts this year. Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke voiced his support for the extension.

“They have done everything

possible to make this work,” Schielke said. “They are totally committed to this. They are really trying to get this done as soon as they can.”

Batavia aldermen in February approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district. Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it.

Costs for the new Walgreens store are estimated at about $6 million, which includes a 10 percent contingency of about $520,250. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which is estimated to cost $275,000.

SUGAR GROVE – Beverly Holmes-Hughes, the former long-serving director of the Sugar Grove Public Library, is being treated for glioblastoma multiforme, a common and aggressive form of brain cancer.

Her friends and supporters in Sugar Grove have organized an account at Castle Bank, Beverly Holmes Hughes Fund, 36 E. Galena Blvd., Sugar Grove, IL 60554.

“I feel very privileged to have them as friends,” Hughes said. “I’m grateful for what they have done for me and my family. I appreciate all the well wishes.”

Hughes has had surgery to remove most of the tumor and will require six to 12 months of chemotherapy and radiation. Because of the length of treatment – and because she is the main support of her family – library board member Pat Graceffa said she and other friends set up the account and outreach to help.

shocked to hear of Hughes’ diagnosis.

“Their first reaction is, ‘How can I help? What can I do?

Can I call her?’ ” Graceffa said.

Graceffa said fellow library board member Louise Coffman, Sugar Grove Trustee Mari Johnson, Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce Director Shari Beverly Baum and Fairel HolmesRank all helped Hughes to organize the account with the help of Castle Bank manager Lisa Lund.

“Deposits have just started coming in as of last week,” Lund said. “We’ve just got a lot of posters in the community and we’re doing a lot of posts on Facebook – any way that they can get the word out for Beverly.”

Organizers decided not to host a dinner or event because of the length of time Hughes will be unable to work full time.

Jesse White, the Illinois secretary of state and state librarian, is urging students in fourth through 12th grades to enter the 2015 “Letters About Literature” contest – a national reading and writing competition sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book, according to a news release.

Letters About Literature invites students to read a book of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the book changed their life or view of the world. Students can enter on their own or through their schools, libraries or other youth organizations.

There are three levels of participation: Level I for grades four to six, Level II for grades seven and eight and Level III for grades nine to 12. One Illinois winner will be selected for each level and receive a $200 cash award.

Teachers of the winning students will receive a $100 cash award to purchase materials for their school library. Winners and teachers will be invited to an awards ceremony in Springfield. The state winners’ letters will be forwarded for national judging.

The deadline to enter the competition is Dec. 15 for Level III, and Jan. 15 for Levels I and II.

Reta M. Awalt, age 90, of North Aurora, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2014, in Naperville. She was born August 2, 1924, in Ridgway, IL, the daughter of Jess and Iva Leora (nee Brown) Rister. She was united in marriage to Harry Awalt on June 26, 1943, in Ridgway.

She is survived by her son, Gary F. (Jodeen) Awalt of North Aurora; five grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; her brother, Adrian (Wilma) Rister of Harrisburg, IL; a sister-in-law, Shirley Rister of Mcleansboro; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Reta is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry; her brothers, Wilson and Eugene Rister; and her sister, Juanita Hauser.

GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell on Tuesday said he plans to appoint one of the county’s former coroners as a special deputy, so she can review past autopsies in full.

Russell wants to swear Mary Lou Kearns back into the coroner’s office later this fall. He proposed the suggestion in response to Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen’s interest in having Kearns conduct an audit on autopsies that the coroner’s office performed in 2013.

Russell’s offer to appoint Kearns as a special deputy “should accomplish this shortterm project,” Lauzen wrote in a letter on Tuesday to Russell.

“I’m totally willing to open up the office,” Russell said on Tuesday. “We’re confident in the reasons we did what we did.”

The Kane County Coroner’s Office was in the process of complying with a Freedom of Information Act request from Kane County Finance Director Joe Onzick. In his Aug. 15 request, Onzick asked for full, complete and electronic versions of 106 autopsies from December 2012 through November 2013. The purpose of obtaining the documents was in line with the county’s fiduciary responsibility to conduct an independent review of such information, according to the request.

Russell said his office was ready to comply with the autopsies and was willing to waive FOIA fees, but not statutory fees for personal information of Kane County decedent residents and their families.

Once Kearns is sworn in, no fees will be required, and

she can review the autopsies without any redactions, Russell said. She will review the autopsies on select dates in September and October in a secured room on county property, according to Lauzen’s letter.

“She’ll be bound under oath not to reveal any personal information,” Russell said of Kearns.

Russell said he has yet to see a contract indicating how much Kearns will be paid for her services.

A resolution regarding a Freedom of InRob Russell Kane County formation Act request to the coroner Kane County coroner was on the Kane County Board’s Tuesday meeting agenda following an executive session, but no mention of the resolution or the request was made following the roughly 90-minute executive session.

In an interview directly after the meeting, Lauzen said the county would be able to accomplish the objective of the resolution through other means.

“It’s not always smooth, but we’re going to work together,” Lauzen said.

Lauzen said the resolution was one of the items discussed in executive session. The closed session was to discuss real estate negotiations and potential litigation, Lauzen said before the county board adjourned to that portion of the meeting.

In the post-meeting interview, Lauzen said the county is not suing any elected officials. Russell also sent an email Monday night to Lauzen and the county board with the subject line “Dispelling rumors.”

“I want to make it perfectly clear that I have never threatened to sue the county for any reason, nor do I have any intentions to do so,” Russell wrote in the email.

Carbon tax could manage uncertainty over shale oil, gas BLOOMBERG NEWS The shale revolution is over, says Astenbeck Capital Management’s Andrew J. Hall, the so-called god of crude oil trading. And the coming supply shortage will push the price of oil as high as $150 a barrel within five years.

Or maybe not: The shale revolution is really just getting started, others argue, and oil prices will stay at about $100 a barrel for years or decades to come.

Both sides of this debate

base their predictions on reams of data, as two articles in Bloomberg Markets explain. But the disagreement reflects great uncertainty about how much accessible shale oil and gas remain underground – and how much that supply will influence prices in the years ahead.

This uncertainty affects more than just the fortunes of drillers and traders. It can also hinder the development of renewable power. Investors find it hard to look ahead to see whether green power sources will be squeezed out

by cheap oil and gas or be in great demand because the price of oil and gas is so high.

Price uncertainty in the energy sector isn’t new. From 2008 to 2009, the average spot price for Brent crude, a benchmark for the price of oil, fell 40 percent – and, along with it, so did U.S. investment in clean energy. What’s new, as the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to rise and the effects of this rise become more pronounced, is the urgency of switching to renewable power.

So how to encourage, in the face of uncertainty over the price of fossil fuels, the development of advanced biofuels and electric vehicles, as well as wind, solar and geothermal power? Tax incentives and government mandates can help a little. But the most efficient strategy is to put a predictable, long-term price on carbon, through a national carbon tax.

Ideally, such a tax would make sure the price for emitting a ton of carbon was equal to society’s cost of dealing with that carbon.

With the environmental costs of greenhouse-gas pollution thus factored into the cost of oil and gas, the market can better determine which renewable-energy projects make sense.

Hall and his opponents make good arguments about whether oil and gas prices are headed up or down. This difference of opinion matters to investors, of course, but it is only part of the larger discussion about how to best deal with climate change.

A carbon tax would help to clarify both debates.

Elburn OKs bid to update village wastewater facility Cost to be about $2M higher than first estimated

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The modernization of Elburn’s wastewater treatment facility will go forward, though the price will be significantly higher than originally had been estimated.

The Elburn Village Board voted unanimously Monday night to accept the bid by Earlville-based Whittaker Construction and Excavating Inc. The cost will be more than $9.6 million.

Previously, the village’s engineering firm, Sugar Grovebased Engineering Enterprises Inc., had estimated the cost

would be about $7.6 million.

John Nevenhoven, the village’s public works director, said one reason it was so much higher than the estimate was that “the bidding environment was not ideal.” However, asked whether waiting a year would have made a difference, Nevenhoven said that likely would not have been to the village’s advantage.

“Would it be different in the future? Yes,” Nevenhoven said. “Would it be different, lower? Doubtful. Different, higher? More than likely.”

Plus, he said, there is urgency. Nevenhoven said a key reason for the modernization is to reduce phosphorous levels to meet standards. Also, there is a safety issue. At this time, any solids that are not waste must be removed manually. But that won’t be the case after the modernization.

Nevenhoven stressed that the modernization is not meant to increase capacity.

“If we never added another single house, we would still have to do this project,” he said.

The village must take out a loan to cover the majority of the cost, and that will lead to higher rates for residents.

Nevenhoven said trustees would vote on the rates at next week’s meeting, but the plan is to put the price at $5.17 per 100 cubic feet in May 2015, up from the current cost of $3.82 per 100 cubic feet.

Nevenhoven said the average user could expect to see the sewer charge rise by $10.80 per month.

Two more increases would be scheduled, with the cost moving to $6.52 per 100 cubic feet in May 2016, and $7.87 per 100 cubic feet in May 2017.

he unmistakable blend of exhaustion and euphoria is on display for many reasons near the finish line of the annual Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, where runners’ motivations are as diverse as their ability.

That won’t be the case at the Last Chance BQ.2 Marathon, to take place at 6:30 a.m. Saturday beginning at Fabyan Forest Preserve West in Geneva.

The goal for the anticipated field of 230 runners is straightforward – qualify for the 2015 Boston Marathon.

Fox Valley Marathon organizers Craig Bixler and Dave Sheble introduced the Last Chance BQ.2 Marathon this year – eight days before the Fox Valley Marathon – as an offering to runners determined to qualify for the 2015 Boston Marathon. Changes in Boston Marathon qualifying procedures in recent years dictate that those who qualify via the Fox Valley Marathon can’t crack the Boston Field for two cycles, meaning this year’s qualifiers can enter the 2016 Boston Marathon.

Creating the Last Chance BQ.2 race a week earlier provides a more immediate alternative.

“The timing of it is so specific, it’s almost like an Olympic Trials type of feel to it,” Sheble said.

In the first two years of the Fox Valley Marathon’s five-year run, Boston-minded runners were able to qualify for the following year’s Boston Marathon. But when the registration timetable changed for the famed Boston Marathon, Bixler and Sheble figured offering a separate, targeted event made more sense than moving the entire slate of Fox Valley races – a full marathon, 20mile run and half-marathon – up a week, and thereby disrupting the training calendar for those who used the Fox Valley races as a launching pad for upcoming events, especially next month’s Chicago Marathon, among other variables.

“In 2011, the Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon was the 25th best Boston qualifier in the US, with over 20 percent of finishers qualifying,” reads an explanation on the Fox Valley Marathon website. “Boston schedule changes last year meant registration closed before our 2013 marathon and left a lot of runners disappointed. lost last year.”

With a goal of qualifying as high a percentage of runners as possible, race directors devised a streamlined course of eight loops around Fabyan Forest Preserve West in Geneva and Batavia.

Sheble called it the “flattest, easiest” portion of the Fox Valley Marathon course, which begins and ends in St. Charles and extends south to Aurora.

The timing cut-off for Boston Marathon qualification is a sliding scale depending on gender and age.

“It’s not a huge race in terms of numbers but in terms of impact, the event has a very high impact in the running community,” Sheble said.

Runners who achieve times 5 minutes

or more below their Boston Marathon qualifying times will be able to register for Boston at a kiosk by the finish line immediately after the race. Since Saturday also is the first day runners are permitted to qualify for the 2016 Boston Marathon – an “unexpected bonus,” organizers say – the BQ.2 race gives runners the possibility of qualifying both for the 2015 and 2016 Boston races.

The makeup of Saturday’s field is drastically different than the traditional Fox Valley fields. Sheble said about 87 percent of the Fox Valley participants are from Illinois, while less than 50 percent of the BQ.2 field will be in-state competitors as aspiring Boston runners from around the country seek a last chance to qualify.

Still, some overlap between the events is evident to Sheble, namely the community backing. Sheble said a couple from Batavia attended an organizational meeting offering to set up a misting station to cool off runners near their home.

“I love that,” Sheble said. “It just shows people are paying attention.

They love the fact this niche race, this qualifying race, is coming right to their backyards.”

This year’s Cougars have no such clear-cut stars, and many of the team’s top performers have been promoted during a transaction-intensive season.

But the team’s starting

pitching has remained predominantly intact, and the bullpen has been equally impressive in recent weeks, with closer Francisco Carrillo striking out all five batters he faced during the Cedar Rapids series.

Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.40 ERA) is expected to start for the Cougars tonight, to be followed by Daury Torrez (11-7, 2.74 ERA) on Thursday and Duane Underwood (6-4, 2.50 ERA) on Saturday in Game 3.

Lake County had a miserable start to the season, including being swept by the Cougars April 11 through 13, but the Captains bear little resemblance to the team that went a league worst 27-43 during the first half of the season.

“That’s the crazy thing about this league, you play them in April or May and you don’t see them again until September,” Johnson said. “ … But we’ll do as much homework as we can do, get as much information as we can get and throw the bats and the balls out there and go get them.”

GENEVA – The best season in Kane County Cougars history is nearing a potentially fitting conclusion.

The Cougars open the Midwest League Championship Series tonight against Lake County (Ohio), and after a franchise-record 91 victories followed by a pair of sweeps in the first two rounds of the playoffs, starting pitcher Paul Blackburn is eager to finish the Cougars’ sizzling season with a celebration.

“It’s been a fun ride,” Blackburn said. “I would be kind of disappointed if we didn’t go out there and kind of prove ourselves. We’ve had an outstanding year. Everyone that’s come up has contributed, everyone that was here before has contributed. The team chemistry is great. Our whole team fights. We like each other … this whole year has been fun.”

Both the Cougars and Captains have won all four of their playoff games. Western Division champion Kane County eliminated Wisconsin and Cedar Rapids while the Captains, representing the Eastern Division, ousted South Bend and Fort Wayne.

Cougars manager Mark Johnson circled the locker room after Sunday’s series-clinching win against Cedar Rapids, hugging players as the music blared and the beer flowed.

There was little question that, despite the emphasis on player development over winning games in the minor leagues, the thrill of a championship chase was in full effect.

“That’s what you play the game for, to go as long as you can and get a chance to win a championship,” Johnson said. “It’s what these guys have been talking about since day one.

“You’ve got to give them all the credit in the world for staying the course and not getting too low, too high, and just dedicating their lives to the game and being a great teammate.”

Rejoining North’s lineup would be far preferable, but that’s not an option.

Kraft, one of North’s team captains, saw his senior season cut short in the third match of the season at Geneva, when he suffered a fractured right tibia after being inadvertently kicked in the shin by a Geneva player.

Kraft had surgery Thursday, and he expects to be sidelined from soccer for about three months.

He has been away from the team while dealing with surgery-related matters but planned to be back with his teammates regularly beginning this week.

“It’s pretty tough, just kind of watching my team play,”

Kraft said. “They’re doing pretty good. It’s kind of sad to see them playing without me, but it’s been easier than I thought because I have a lot of support around me.”

Kraft said the injury happened as he attempted to dribble upfield, navigating through traffic.

“As soon as it happened, I knew something bad happened because I’ve never been in that kind of pain before,” Kraft said. “I started standing up and as soon as I did stand up, I fell down again.”

Kraft, North’s starting right-back, praised junior Garrett Morgando for playing well since taking over the position. North’s starting back line also includes Brandon Stricker, Nicholas Graham and Carter Held.

Kraft remains interested in pursuing college soccer,

naming Eastern Illinois as a potential destination.

In the meantime, Kraft said his teammates have done their part to keep his spirits up.

“They’ve been stopping by a lot, bringing gifts, and they have a surprise for me soon,” Kraft said. “I don’t know what that is yet, but they’re all going to do something for me.”

Worth the trip St. Charles East navigated a strong New Trier Invitational field last week to take the tournament championship, capped by a dramatic, comeback win against Lyons, 2-1, in Saturday’s championship match.

The Saints’ success in the tournament made the round trips to the north shore all the more worthwhile.

“It’s been a long week,”

East coach Paul Jennison said Saturday. “It’s been fun, it’s been productive and I am very, very proud of the way the lads have handled themselves this week because I know it’s not easy with school traveling up to a 7 o’clock game in Winnetka on a Thursday, but we got a lot out of this tournament, and I think it’s going to set us up nicely as the season goes along.”

Against Lyons, East sent the match to sudden-death overtime with Evan DiLeonardi’s tying goal about a minute from the end of regulation.

“As long as there’s time on the clock, I always think we can put something away, but to be fair, it definitely wasn’t a game where things were going right for us,” Jennison said.

North defeated Upstate Eight Conference foe Geneva, 158-165 in a nine-hole match Tuesday at Mill Creek Golf Club.

“I would [attribute] a lot of our success to the fact that we have returners,” first-year North coach Irish Whalen said.

“… They are very focused on what they’re doing. You can come to one of our practices, you could hear a pin drop.

Bears weren’t that bad, just not very good The problem with a weekly commitment to film study and grading performances is that watching stinkers like the Bears’ upset loss Sunday to the Bills over and over can get old really fast.

What’s interesting, though, is as frustrating as the outcome against Buffalo was, individually most of the Bears weren’t all that bad. The problem is that none of them were particularly good. At the end of the day, the Bears were just a average team, and the Bills were marginally better than average.

Matt Forte, Kyle Long, Jermon Bushrod, Willie Young and Jeremiah Ratliff actually played well, Michael Ola and Brian de la Puente were more than stout coming off the bench, and only Stephen Paea, Ryan Mundy and Chris Conte jumped off the tape because of their struggles.

Score Jay Cutler a B- at quarterback. He made some nice reads, nice throws and big plays, but winning quarterbacks don’t make the throw he did on the Kyle Williams interception. It’s on Cutler more than anyone else that 427 yards of offense yielded only 20 points.

Running backs, basically Matt Forte, get a B+. Forte did everything you could ask of him with what the line gave him to work with.

Two things to watch here.

Forte’s pass protection wasn’t bad, but he digressed a bit last year at what was a strength, and he wasn’t perfect against Buffalo, and he was on the field for 70 of the Bears’ 74 offensive plays. He has to be because they’re just not good enough behind him, but he cannot keep up that pace week in and week out and stay effective.

I gave the receivers and tight ends a B. They were solid if unspectacular, and Brandon Marshall cannot put the ball on the ground. It doesn’t get mentioned often enough though that Marshall is the best blocking wide receiver in the NFL, and the Bears’ receivers as a group are the best.

Martellus Bennett had a good game, but he can block the run better.

I’ve actually gave a B+ for

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush the offensive line. The two sacks allowed are disappointing, but there were few missed blocks, and the backups were solid when called on.

The defensive line gets a C+, although I thought Ratliff did a good job absorbing blockers and often eating a gap and a half or two. Young had a nice game, and Lamarr Houston was a bit disappointing against the run but pressured the pocket better than I expected.

The problem was as the game wore on they just looked old – which they are. On the two big runs in overtime, Spiller for 13 and Fred Jackson for 38, Ratliff and Allen were both engaged by just one blocker each and unable to shed and slide down the line to close the holes.

Paea struggled a good part of the day, and Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton were unremarkable in 12 and 11 snaps, respectively.

The linebackers earned a C-.

Jon Bostic was the best of the bunch against the run, and it is particularly interesting how many times you see on the tape Shea McClellin arriving at the pile in time to look down at it just after the whistle has blown.

The secondary gets a B-, as holding any NFL team to 167 yards passing over 60-plus minutes is a nice day’s work, but individually no one really stood out.

Fuller’s rookie debut was not particularly auspicious.

Special teams get a C. Patrick O’Donnell had a poor debut averaging just 36.5 net punting yards to Colton Schmidt’s 43.2, and kick and punt overage have to get better.

The coaching staff gets a C. Clearly they can throw the football, but can they do anything else they’ll need to do to win at this level?

What we know is things get a lot tougher Sunday night.

I’m sure it’s a blur, but how do you view the past week with a little time to reflect now?

It was just an amazing experience to come out to my first two races and do so well. I wasn’t expecting anything. I went in trying to do my best, and was really excited to be able to run all those reces with really amazing

runners. They were both great races and really exciting.

When did you get started in cross country?

About three years ago, I started in triarthlon. … Through that, I just kind of became more of a runner and started to really love it. Through triathlon [now with Tri-Cities based Multisport Madness], I just kind of ran more, and I started cross country in middle school. So then with that, I just started to get more into it and really love it.

What’s your approach before a race?

Before a race, I don’t know, I just try to stay clam, try to visualize a race how I want it to go.

Sometimes I listen to music to try to pump me up, but I usually am calm and just think about it and how I want it to go. I guess I don’t really do much.

“It’s the same way every week. I’ve always tried to prepare like a starter, like if I was going to be ready to play at any moment,” Hare said. “I feel like the preparation’s the same.”

Carey told Hare on Monday that he would be the starting quarterback against UNLV. “I was happy,” he said.

“Obviously, I’ve been working really hard to get to this position. But work isn’t over, have to win some games now.”

St. Charles North freshman Audrey Ernst delivered an ultra-promising debut over the past week, winning her first career varsity girls cross country race while placing second in her next one. That effort earned Ernst a nod as St. Charles Bank & TrustKane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Ernst, and the following is an edited transcript of their conversation:

DeKALB – Drew Hare was the most impressive Northern Illinois quarterback during Saturday’s 23-15 win at Northwestern.

That performance helped him earn NIU’s starting quarterback job, at least for now.

At his weekly press conference Tuesday, NIU coach Rod Carey named Hare his starter for Saturday’s game at UNLV (6 p.m.). While Hare, Anthony Maddie and Mat McIntosh each got time in the Huskies’ first two contests, Carey said the plan is for Hare to play the whole game.

“We’re going to start Drew Hare, and we’ll go with him and he’ll be the guy,” Carey said. “Intentions are to let him in there and let him play and see what he can do with a full game and complete control.”

The sophomore, who battled McIntosh and Maddie from spring ball through the start of the season, went 6 of 10 for 109 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. He did not throw an interception.

Hare hit Da’Ron Brown with an 18-yard strike to give NIU the lead at the end of the third quarter, and threw a 59-yard TD pass to Brown in the fourth. He also ran for 31 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown.

Searching for God in songs of Hiss Golden Messenger

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post DURHAM, N.C. – Michael Taylor is ready to talk about God. But first, dinner. So, he hops into his Subaru Forester – a vehicle with enough room for child seats and guitar amps – and drives off to a restaurant in downtown Durham. Inside, there are fancy pizzas, bartenders who know his name and his manager, Brad Cook, who’s sipping a tequila gimlet and radiating good vibes. He clamps Taylor in a bear hug and quickly launches a tiny debate over which song Taylor should sing on “Letterman” in November.

“Dude!” Cook says. “Trust me!”

Taylor is a trusting dude, a devoted dad and, as Hiss Golden Messenger, an author of still-water folk songs that dive deep into the complications of faith. His superb new album, “Lateness of Dancers,” was released Sept. 9, his 39th birthday, by Merge Records, the macro-indie label headquartered just a few blocks away from this pizza spot. The songs on it feel both ambiguously sweet and deeply personal, but ultimately confident in their own vagueness.

“Mike’s level of thoughtfulness and deliberation is pretty unique,” his labelmate and sometimes-collaborator William Tyler says later over the phone. “His songs aren’t about sexy topics – they’re about being a father and searching for your place in the universe.

I think he’s a gospel singer in a lot of ways.”

But not in every way.

During his new album’s finale, Taylor sings, “Take the good news, carry it away,” refusing to indicate whether that good news should be shared or shredded.

Michael Taylor, who records as Hiss Golden Messenger, is seen near his home in Durham, North Carolina. inhabits this highly charged middle space, the chasm between faith and doubt. His strongest melodies simultaneously suggest jubilation and despair, comfort and restlessness. His singing is cool and sharp, somewhere between James Taylor’s serenity and Bob Dylan’s agita. He never sounds stuck in the middle. He sounds as if he’s conquering the middle.

“This combination of things that I do – the lyrical content, the rhythmic content,” he says, “it’s this weird alchemy that belongs to me.”

Concurrently, his search for God has been every bit as unique. But maybe not as successful.

After dinner, he heads back to the house where his wife, Abby, has already put their kids – Elijah, 5 years, and Ione, 14 months – to bed. Taylor disappears into the kitchen and returns carrying four beers and a bottle of Glenlivet.

“C’mon.”

He tip-toes down to a small room in the basement where he writes his songs. There are four white walls, a white

paper lantern, vines of white Christmas lights and an old turntable. He cracks a beer and drops the needle on a Byrds song – “Old Blue,” one of the first songs that made Taylor wonder whether he should try writing some songs of his own.

“I felt like I had struck on this thing,” Taylor says of those early songs. “This was my musical voice that I’d been searching for so long.”

Taylor grew up in Orange County, riding skateboards in the California sunbeams. He joined a hardcore punk band, Ex-Ignota, while at college in Santa Barbara, then moved to San Francisco to lead the Court and Spark, a folk-rock group that burned brightly, then quickly burned out.

Exhausted and discouraged, Taylor relocated to North Carolina in 2007 to get his master’s in folklore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“It would be a great way to restart my brain, which had just atrophied from years of weed and drinking and drugs,” Taylor says of the move.

By 2009, everything was

different. He was a graduate navigating fatherhood, ample student loan debt, unpaid heating bills and unresolved thoughts about higher powers.

“I was baptized Episcopalian, but my parents had a hard time with church, so I don’t really have that in my background,” Taylor says.

“But I’m not saying I don’t believe in God. I’m skeptical.

And the people telling me God does exist don’t seem like reputable sources. I see God being used as a tool for violence and mayhem. Whether it’s the North Carolina GOP totally dismantling social services for low-income people and the elderly, or ISIS causing chaos, or Israel and Palestine killing each other over their prophets.”

He sets down his guitar.

“It never seems like American Christians are ever following the teachings of Jesus as I understand them to be – and they’re not that difficult to understand. I don’t want to be dissuaded from this idea of belief by people who claim to be experts on Jesus Christ.

But to me, they seem ignorant.

So I’m trying to find this other way to faith. But I’m looking for a back door.”

He pries the cap from a sweaty bottle of beer.

“It feels funny to be talking about America writ large, but faith is a big part of American culture and I want to feel like I have some sort of sense of what that is, and what it means, and a sense of the good that can come from that. ... I don’t want to be talking about music with everybody all the time. I want another connection that’s based on love and wisdom – what I think of when I think of the teachings of Jesus.”

And then he laughs.

“But I’m having a hard time finding that.”

Dehydration often culprit causing brittle nails Dear Doctor K: As I’ve gotten older, my fingernails have become very brittle. They chip, break and split easily. I’ve also noticed ridges. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Many of my patients notice that their fingernails become thinner, more brittle and fragile with age.

Nails may split lengthwise, or separate in thin layers at the tips. The nails may look different as well. They may become yellowed or dull, and many develop thin, vertical ridges.

Brittle nails usually result from dehydration. Your nails may be dehydrated if you live in a dry climate, frequently wash and dry your hands, or if you often use nail polish remover.

Here are some things you can do to keep your nails healthy and combat dehydration: • Avoid long hot baths or showers.

• Always moisturize your hands after washing and drying them.

• Use a moisturizer (petroleum jelly is fine) on your hands and nails at bedtime.

• Avoid prolonged exposure to cold, dry weather. Wear

• Trim your nails regularly to keep them short and smoothly rounded at the tips.

• Protect fingernails from injury. Wear gloves if you are working with your hands.

• Don’t bite your nails or the protective cuticles around them.

• Don’t use nail polish remover more than twice a month.

• If you get manicures, stick with reputable nail salons that sterilize instruments. Better yet, bring your own.

• Trim your nails only after soaking them or after a bath or shower. They’ll be less likely to split.

• File your nails in one direction only, and use a fine emery board or file.

• In hot weather or when exercising, stay well hydrated.

The vertical lines or “ridg-

ing” you mentioned is a natural part of nail growth. Ridging tends to happen more as we get older, and I don’t know of any way to eliminate it.

Finally, don’t fall for the many myths and misconceptions about nail care. For example, eating gelatin or soaking your nails in it will not make your nails healthier or longer.

I recall the first time a patient asked me about her brittle nails. Particularly since this patient also had serious heart and lung disease, I wondered why she was bringing it up.

I surely hadn’t been taught anything in medical school about problems with fingernails.

A senior colleague gave me some wise advice: “People care about their appearance – a lot.

Some people care more about their appearance than about their life-threatening illnesses.

Don’t dismiss those concerns.”

Teen has right to happiness Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and have been married to my husband, who is 33, for seven months.

We attend the same church, and he was also our Christian youth director. I came from a troubled home. My father was physically abusive to my mother and me, and I’m sure he’s an alcoholic, or at least headed that way.

Ever since I met him, I really liked my now-husband. He brought hope and stability to my life. When he asked me to marry him, I jumped at the chance, and we have a very happy marriage.

My very best friend and I have been friends since we started first grade together. We really bonded when we got to high school because she and I had similar situations at home. She advised me not to marry my husband because she thought he was too old for me. She and I both have jobs and, now that I’m married, we don’t see that much of each other. We talk on the phone and sometimes get together for lunch on a Saturday.

The last couple of times I’ve had lunch with Karla, she has had unkind things to say about my husband. She always says, “I think your husband ... ” but she is just guessing and she’s usually wrong.

Last week, she told me that he was too old for me and that someday I’d wind up being his nurse and a lot of my years would be wasted.

She told me to my face that she would advise me to get divorced now before we start having children.

I love my husband and enjoy our life together, but I’m getting tired of my friend’s negative remarks about my

What can I do to get my friend to talk about more pleasant things and stop belittling my husband? Simply put, she’s jealous of your husband.

By her incessant negativity, she’s saying: “You have to choose: him or me.”

Well, the choice is obvious – it has to be your husband. Stop the lunches and phone calls with her. Write her a letter or email and tell her that your husband is the most important person in your life and you’re sick of the way she bad-mouths him.

Tell her you no longer want to see her, at least for the time being, but for the sake of the longtime friendship, you’ll consider resuming your friendship in the future.

Also tell her that, if she can accept what you ask, she should put a note in writing to you. If she writes saying she’s sorry for her unwarranted remarks about your husband, it’s up to you to decide whether she’s trustworthy and if the friendship is worth continuing.

Just remember, you have a right to your happiness.

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, one heart and three diamonds. There are two routes to eight tricks: four spades, one heart and three diamonds; or two spades, one heart and five diamonds. Getting four spade tricks seems to require the finesse to work – a 50 percent chance; while collecting five diamond winners is a 54 percent shot.

So it seems right to play on diamonds. Here, though, when the diamonds break badly, South does not have a hand entry to take the spade finesse. He will cash the spade ace and king to drop the queen, but that only provides three tricks in the suit, not four.

The right line, after winning with the heart ace, is to lead the spade jack to encourage West to cover if he has the queen. But after he plays low, declarer wins with dummy’s king and cashes the spade ace. When the queen drops, South leads a spade to his nine, then takes dummy’s three top diamonds and spade 10 for his contract.

If the spade queen does not appear, declarer needs diamonds to run.

New church in near future for St. Gall ELBURN – St. Gall Catholic Church might be at its new location as early as 2017.

The church’s pastor, the Rev. Tim Seigel, announced Sunday that leaders no longer are looking to wait five years before moving ahead with the plans.

The church’s new location will be at Hughes Road and Route 47, a plan that has been in the works since 1998, when the land originally was purchased, according to a question-and-answer sheet distributed by church officials.

Seigel spoke to parishioners about the subject at each Mass over the weekend. As a parishioner, I heard the message there. It is a change for St. Gall, which as recently as late last year announced that plans were to have a new church built in five years.

However, in an email distributed to parishioners, Seigel wrote that “careful dialogue

In the church handout, officials wrote that the church has “been assured that we have enough money now to get started with this project.”

Plans call for a church that will seat 450 people. Originally, the plan was for the church to seat 600 to 1,000 people. Seigel wrote that the sanctuary is to be built “in such a way that it can be expanded up to 700 people to accommodate future growth.” Growth in Elburn is expected. For example, plans for the Elburn Station subdivision potentially could double the population of the village.

The church’s current site,

at 120 W. Shannon St., was built in 1925. It sits in an area along Route 47, just north of the village’s downtown area.

The plan for the new church was launched in 1998, and many parishioners contributed funds for the project. Seigel wrote that “it is time to build because many good people have made and met pledges for the new building, and it is right and just that we honor those pledges.”

He wrote that “since 1998, when the land was originally purchased, we have been looking forward to this moment.

People have toiled and labored with great dedication to see this moment happen. While there is a great deal of work yet to do, I am thrilled to see many talented people using their gifts to make this dream a reality.”

Seigel wrote that the current location “while charming and quaint, is dark, small and inadequate for our liturgical

needs, which call for great beauty, somber reverence and a deep appreciation for the sanctity of a reverent place to worship.”

Of the Hughes Road property, Seigel wrote that “our new space will be bright, and we hope to incorporate the beautiful windows from our current church. It will have adequate office space, a hall and kitchen for luncheons, gatherings and classrooms” for religious education.

According to the question-and-answer sheet, the goal is to have the project completed by late 2017, though officials acknowledged that unforeseen circumstances could delay such a large undertaking, and it’s possible the project might not be finished until 2018.
