Weapon found after fight in Kane County Jail

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – After a fight among inmates, a Kane County Jail detainee was found with a weapon, making it the “first actual weapon” found in the facility since it opened in 2008, Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said.

“That’s a big deal,” he said.

Omar H. Caballero, 20, of the 200 block of North Smith Street, Aurora, was charged with felony possession of a weapon in a penal institution, according to court records.

The shank was found after a fight broke out at the St. Charles Township facility about 6:45 p.m. Aug. 20 in one of the cell blocks, Gengler said.

The officer used pepper spray to not only stop the altercation but to also identify those involved, Gengler said.

Those with pepper spray on them would stand out from other inmates.

The men were separated, Gengler said, and a piece of metal fell from Caballero’s pant leg as he was being escorted away. The metal piece was about 4 inches and was sharpened down to a point, he said.

Nobody needed medical treatment, Gengler said.

He said the officer was able to intervene immediately because the jail uses direct supervision. At the old facility, he said, inmates were not under constant supervision and would wait until the officer passed to conduct their business.

The fight and surrounding circumstances prompted a lockdown, which lasted about two days, Gengler said. He said no other weapons were found.

ST. CHARLES – A group of people near Katy Schulz on Sunday morning cheered after she hit a target with an ax on her second try.

“I’ve never thrown an ax before – I kind of had to get a feel for it,” Schulz, a St. Charles resident, said later in the day.

Schulz, a member of CrossFit Tri-Cities, was one of more than 50 people to compete Sunday in the teams

competition at the first Jack Axe Games and Festival at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

The games consisted of a one-and-a-half-mile course with 17 obstacles, such as a caber throw, the famed ax throw, cross-cut sawing and more.

“Everything about this is a little unique,” Jack Axe co-founder Eric Klein said.

“You have to have the endurance but also the strength.”

Police probe 2 child incidents involving male strangers

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police said Monday they are continuing to investigate reports of two 13-year-old girls who encountered a male stranger in their neighborhoods in separate incidents.

The incidents occurred after school Friday and in the evening Saturday.

“We are still trying to work on pictures to see if we can make out the license plate from the first one,” St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said.

“The pictures are blurry.”

Police also can’t be sure the incidents are related, Kintz said.

“There are enough differences – but enough similarities – so I’m not prepared to rule out that they’re connected,” Kintz said.

The first incident occurred at 4:56 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Indiana Street, police said. A man followed the girl to her apartment complex parking lot, and her brother came out to take photos of the man who was following her, police said.

The suspect in that incident was described as white and heavyset, in his 40s, with white or gray hair, wearing glasses and possibly having a slight beard.

Police said he was wearing a yellow Hawaiian shirt with a black splint on his left wrist and arm.

The man never attempted to speak to the girl, according to police.

The latest incident occurred at 9:14 p.m. Saturday

in the 3400 block of Voltaire Lane in St. Charles. The girl was walking toward a park on the 3400 block of Voltaire Lane when she saw a man standing next to a neighbor’s home near a bush, the bulletin stated.

The man attempted to lure her to him by saying he was hurt, but the girl ran back to her residence, according to the bulletin.

The man was described as white with a thin build, in his late 40s to early 50s, with dark, short hair and a dark goatee, the bulletin stated. Police said he was wearing a white striped shirt and blue jeans.

It is not known whether the man had a vehicle or any means of transportation, according to the bulletin. A search of the area revealed no suspects or leads.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call St. Charles police at 630-377-4435.

Batavia Public Library Board president running for Kane County Board

He is running as a Republican in District 10, currently represented by Susan Starrett, R-Batavia. The district represents Batavia and North Aurora.

The Republican primary election will be March 15, and the winner of that primary will run in the general election Nov. 8. Sullivan previously ran for a Kane County Board

“I’ve continued to have my eye on it since then,” Sullivan said.

Starrett, who is in her first term on the board, said she plans for run for re-election.

“I love serving the people of Batavia and North Aurora,” she said. “The people I’m representing think I’m doing a good job.”

Starrett said she welcomed Sullivan getting into the race.

Sullivan has served as president of the Batavia Public Library District Board since 2011, and he was first elected

to that board in 2005. Sullivan also has served on the city of Batavia’s Historic Preservation Commission since 2012.

He manages the marketing department at Pace Suburban Bus, the regional public transit agency. Sullivan has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in public policy studies from Vanderbilt University.

He is a nearly lifelong resident of Batavia and a Batavia High School graduate. He and his wife, Erin, live in Batavia with their English bulldog, Sophie.

COVER STORY ‘BRILLIANT FUTURE’ AT FERMILAB Study of neutrinos designed to be ‘something that will get the attention of the entire world’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – In 1995, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory’s Tevatron particle accelerator discovered the top quark, giving scientists additional insight into how the universe formed.

Quarks are among the fundamental building blocks of matter in the universe.

Despite the groundbreaking discoveries it made, the Tevatron shut down in 2011 after losing out on additional federal funds to continue its operation.

Even though the Tevatron no longer is in operation, Fermilab scientists are working to keep the laboratory on the cutting edge of scientific research.

“We have a lot of experiments that are already launched, because, of course, we had some idea the Tevatron was going to shut down someday. So we had some time to prepare for this,” said Joseph Lykken, Fermilab’s deputy director.

One of the experiments is the Muon g-2 experiment, which will study the properties of elusive subatomic particles called muons. The experiment features a 17-ton magnet, which attracted attention in 2013 on its 3,200mile journey from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York to Fermilab.

In addition, the laboratory recently held a public hearing on the proposed Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility and the associated Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. Construction of the experiment could begin as early as 2018, with the experiment starting in 2025.

The experiment will send a beam of neutrinos through the earth from Fermilab to the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. Neutrinos are elementary particles that have

With the data, scientists hope to learn about the building blocks of matter and determine the exact role neutrinos play in the universe.

“That’s certainly the biggest thing we’ve attempted to do here since the Tevatron started 40 years ago,” Lykken said. “We think it will give us a similar kind of brilliant future that the Tevatron gave us. It’s designed to be not just a national experiment, but something that will get the attention of the entire world.”

Scientists from 30 countries will come to Fermilab to work on the experiment, Lykken said.

“That’s how you can tell

if you are on the cutting edge of science, ... when the whole world wants to come here to do it,” he said.

Such research at Fermilab often goes beyond just making a scientific discovery. For example, to make the Tevatron happen, scientists needed to build superconducting magnets that later were used in MRI scanners for medical purposes, Lykken said.

In addition, for many years, Fermilab used its neutron therapy facility to treat cancer patients.

“Those things are almost direct applications because they require particle accelerators to make the beam to use for the therapy,” Lykken said.

Ever since the Tevatron shut down, Fermilab has been working on a new vision for

itself, Fermilab Chief Operating Officer Tim Meyer said.

As part of the new vision, there is a plan to centralize the operations on the Fermilab campus, Meyer said.

That includes constructing a new building adjacent to the east side of Wilson Hall. The Department of Energy recently gave the green light to move the project along.

“The Department of Energy has understood our plan, and they’ve asked us to do the work to develop the concept for the next step,” Meyer said.

The Department of Energy is the main source of funding for Fermilab. Construction of the new building wouldn’t get underway until 2018, he said.

He estimated it would take two to four years to construct the building.

Unlike Wilson Hall, which is 16 stories tall and is a flagship building for the Fermilab campus, the new building would be a modest two to three stories tall, Meyer said.

“It’s not going to interfere with the skyline of Fermilab,” Meyer said. “But it’s something that will allow us to replace some of those old, distant buildings that are falling apart, and bring some people closer to Wilson Hall. This will be one of the major hubs of activity at Fermilab for the next couple of decades.”

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, said he likes the direction Fermilab is going. Foster is a scientist who worked at Fermi National Laboratory in Batavia for more than 20

I don’t read it. I vote yeah, OK,” Simonian said. “We spend a lot of staff time – everybody – filling that in … and a lot of that time, in my opinion, that could be used for actually measurable results versus warm and fuzzies, which I consider all these visions to be.”

But committee chairman Mark Brault said he disagreed.

“You have to have warm and fuzzies in your vision,” Brault said. “If you’re a businessman and you say what’s our goals for our company going to be? Best in class customer service. That’s pretty warm and fuzzy. How do you do it?

So if you don’t start with something that’s here, you can’t get to the next level.”

Assistant City Administrator Stephanie Dawkins said the strategic plan’s goals and visions were those adopted by the City Council and then given to the committee for prioritization.

GENEVA – The Geneva Strategic Plan Advisory Committee on Monday presented an 11-page booklet of its goal prioritization at a special Committee of the Whole.

City officials will be relying on the committee’s work when aldermen have their own strategic planning session in November to go over the visions and goals as presented.

The first of seven visions prioritized by the committee, for example, is “Recognize, honor, preserve and enhance community heritage and character.”

“When the original strategic plan was done, we had rooms full of hundreds of people,” Mayor Kevin Burns said. “They were all winnowed down to a somewhat manageable document. It’s a challenge. That makes it all the more important.”

Kaneville Fest brings smiles with good times

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Despite the rain Saturday, Kaneville Fest continued on as planned – with garage sales and a car show. By the time the rain stopped, those at the festival were ready for the ice creamand watermelon-eating contests, pork chop and chicken dinner and fireworks.

Former Kaneville resident Elizabeth Besco, now of Aurora, said she would not miss it.

“I love to watch the kids and the fireworks,” Besco said.

Another former resident, Lyla Staton, who now lives in Keokuk, Iowa, also said she would not miss it.

“The kids have a parade – and the garage sales,” Staton said, adding she found some great bargains.

Kaneville resident Dawn Schleifer said she enjoys everything from the car show to the contests, dinner and fireworks.

“I’ve lived in Kaneville since I was 1 year old,” Schleifer said.

As the contests wound down, volunteers started grilling fires for the pork chop and chicken dinners.

“This is such a close-knit community,” Besco said. “Pat Hill is the heartbeat of the community.”

Hill is the village president and the owner of Hill’s Country Store. Hill said Hershey provided free vanilla ice cream for the contests.

While the weekend’s festivities were winding down, Kaneville would be adding more to do later in the year, Hill said.

“We’re bringing back the street dance in October,” Hill said.

The winning group said its hardest obstacle was the crosscut sawing because it was not a part of their usual training.

“The games are a good mix of strength, speed and communication,” said Scott Brackemyer of Cortland.

Brackemyer competed Saturday by himself, then was on two teams Sunday – the winning team and another Synergy Kettlebell team that finished in ninth place overall.

Like many of Sunday’s participants, Synergy Kettlebell team member Gina Tomasheski of Elgin had her family cheering her on from the sidelines. Her husband, Jeff, and their two children, Frankie, 7, and Vinnie, 4, were there to support her.

Jeff Tomasheski said he liked various aspects of the festival, including the music and a bounce house for children.

The Jack Axe co-founders hope to make its next installment bigger and better. Many of this year’s participants want to come back and compete again, Klein said.

“Jack Axe is just getting started ... we kind of want to take over the world with it,” Klein said with a smile.

Raymond served in the U.S. Army in WW II. Following the Army he graduated from Northwestern University on the G.I. Bill. He was a grade school teacher in Capron, IL and Evanston, IL. Mr. Libner was Principal for twenty-five years at Elmwood Park High School. After his retirement as principal, he was on staff at Concordia College for ten years.

He is survived by two sons, Richard (Joan) Libner, Mark (Ann) Libner; daughter, Karen (Matt) Kasperkiewicz; eight grandchildren, Eliot, Heidi, Mitchell, Andrew, Neil, Lisa, Eric and Anthony; sisters-in-law, Helen Ernst, Joan Gronquist; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl E. Bergquist, 83, of Beaufort, South Carolina, formerly of St. Charles, Illinois.

Passed away Aug. 27, 2015.

He was born in Aurora, Illinois on May 7, 1932, to Carl Hilmer and Irene Powers Bergquist.

He attended La Fox grade school and Geneva High school.

He drove a cattle truck for Bowgren Brothers into Chicago and various Mid-Western states. He then went to work for Thomas Brothers hauling beef cattle out of Chicago to Elburn Packing Plant, after that he went to work for Stover’s Welding. From there, Carl worked for White Brother’s hauling heavy equipment. He moved to South Beloit while still working for White Bros. where he became their terminal manager.

Carl then went on the become a Deputy Sheriff for Winnebago County and then went to the South Beloit Police Department. Carl finally ended his police career in Saint Charles where he was Sergeant. Carl also worked part time as a welder for Hendry Metal Products in St. Charles.

In 1979 Carl, his wife Sharon along with their youngest daughter moved to Lac Du flambeau Wis. for 4 years.

They then moved back to St. Charles where he held his last full time job working for Feece oil Company for 21 years. While working for Feece, Carl also worked part time bar tending for the Moose Lodge in St. Charles for 25 years and for the VFW in Batavia, IL. For 20 years. Carl was forced into retirement with an injury to his right shoulder where he retired to his favorite recliner.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sharon (Holtz); his children, Pamela (Ron) Szweistis of St. Charles, Deborah Warning of Edgewater FL,

after an accident on Jericho Road west of Route 47 in Sugar Grove.

Will Russia, China beat U.S. in Arctic?

President Barack Obama should be applauded for gathering world leaders in Anchorage this week for a U.S.-led conference on “Global Leadership in the Arctic.”

Yet the summit’s limited focus on climate change, though undoubtedly important, belies the significance of the broader U.S. interests and responsibilities in the Arctic region.

As ice turns to navigable ocean, the Arctic is becoming the U.S.’s third great ocean border, creating vexing strategic challenges and unprecedented opportunities.

These include not only climate change, but threats to national sovereignty and security, revolutions in international commerce and a “Klondike”-like rush to control vast undersea resources.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that 13 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30 percent of its undiscovered natural gas lie in the Arctic. The United States has the potential to be the leader in responsible Arctic oil exploration, as our major oil companies maintain the technology and know-how to responsibly tap deep-sea Arctic oil, and could set a new global standard for responsible development and emergency response.

Yet the U.S. is barely in the game, potentially allowing other nations to move in and develop these resources less safely.

The opening of Arctic sea routes will cut transit times between Asian, U.S. and European markets, reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions. But growing traffic along these routes raises new questions of regulation and sovereignty. President Vladimir Putin of Russia has stated he wants the Bering Strait to become the next Suez Canal, and that any ships passing over large swaths of the Arctic – even the North Pole –

might be forced to pay transit fees to Russia.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Russia is investing aggressively in the Arctic: 95 percent of its gas reserves and 60 percent of its oil reserves are located in the region. It leads the world with 22 icebreakers and has restored Soviet-era airfields and ports.

China, which isn’t even an Arctic country, will have built two icebreakers by next year. The U.S. Coast Guard, however, has two functioning icebreakers (the same number as tiny Estonia), and one of these vessels already is a decade past its intended 30-year life span.

The U.S. needs to play catch-up after decades of disengagement.

This lack of leadership on a range of Arctic issues – from maritime border disputes to seabed claims – is amplified by the U.S. Senate’s bizarre refusal to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. More than 165 nations have signed onto the convention, which effectively governs territorial and commercial claims on the high seas, and has become the primary regime for arbitrating Arctic territorial claims. The U.S., however, is among the last holdouts refusing ratification, along with North Korea, Iran, Syria and Libya.

Restoring the U.S. to its historic role as an Arctic power will require a recognition of the complex and strategic issues at stake, long-term investment to improve Arctic infrastructure and capabilities, the adoption of the Law of the Sea convention to have an equal voice in the discussion and a fresh sense of urgency.

Fan Appreciation Night affords Cougars fans free admission

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Long a euphemism for a base on balls, “free pass” adopted new meaning for most fans attending Monday’s Cougars game.

Their ticket stub doubled as one on Fan Appreciation Night, so long as a spectator wasn’t situated in a suite, outfield party deck or the newly-unveiled Strike Zone seats behind home plate.

The same drill applies tonight, as the club celebrating its silver, 25-year anniversary affords a golden opportunity for anyone looking for a night out without breaking – or even denting – the bank.

“I think it’s cool for fans,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said. “Hopefully, it brings out some people that maybe haven’t been (in a while), but it also at the same time rewards the people that have been so loyal to us for so long.”

A 10-game winning streak spanning June and July notwithstanding, this season promised to celebrate longevity for an organization that in 2013 became the first Class-A operation to attract 10 million fans.

Earlier promotions included offering 1991-era ticket prices, hearkening to the team’s inaugural season after moving from Wausau, Wisconsin. The deal afoot Monday and today does not channel dishonesty, but instead the thousands of

“I think you take it for granted sometimes,” second baseman Cody Regis said. “I think it depends. But, I mean, it’s still a blessing to be in the position to be able to (play for living).”

“Blessing” also was a buzzword for third baseman Joe Munoz, who has The Serenity Prayer tattooed on his right forearm.

“Oh, yeah, definitely,” Munoz said. “I’m very blessed to be able to do this every day and come out here and have this as

my job. I mean, not many people get to say that, and you’ve just got to treasure it as long as you can before it’s gone. You never now what’s going to happen. It’s definitely a blessing to have this as a job.”

Not only did St. Charles East pull within eight points of South Elgin with five minutes left Saturday only to see the Storm answer strong and pull away, but it saw its second key piece injured in the process.

The Saints (0-1) already were playing without starting senior linebacker Mitch Guillaume, who was in basketball shorts and a T-shirt on the sidelines during Saturday’s 28-6 loss.

Guillaume confirmed that he had a partially torn medial collateral ligament, or MCL, in his right knee and will miss a fair amount of time.

“The plan right now is to just rest it and be back as soon as I can,” Guillaume said after Saturday’s game. “We play Batavia in Week 4, so I could try and play against Elgin (in Week 3), but I think a more realistic plan is to try and rest an extra week to be back by the Batavia game.”

East also played the second half without starting running back Cam Canales.

Saints coach Bryce Farquhar did not specify the extent of Canales’ injury, only that he was “banged up” and is “day-to-day.”

Canales took on most of the workload for East, with 13 carries for 54 yards in the first half. He also caught a ball out of the backfield for 17 yards before being hit and fumbling for one of East’s three turnovers on the day.

“When you lose one of your best players, it kills you,” Farquhar said. “Cam is so dynamic and is such a physical presence. We played the second half without our best player on offense and one of, if not our best, player on defense in Mitch. It hurts because we have had great leadership from those two guys.”

Canales missing any time will be a big hit to the Saints and their attempt to keep evolving with their triple-option offense. The senior running looks to be a vital part of the Saints’ success this season The Saints will host Jacobs at 7:30 p.m. Friday in their home opener.

But coach Rob Wicinski knows that penalties are something that cannot happen and need to be cleaned up before the Vikings head to Oak Lawn to take on Richards on Friday.

“Penalties are killer,” Wicinski said.

“I’ve been preaching, ‘You can’t play two teams,’ you know. Because you’re going to lose if you play against two teams.

But the penalties could have come from the excitement for Geneva (1-0) to finally get out there and hit someone not in a Vikings jersey.

“Practice is hard,” Geneva quarterback/defensive back Sean Chambers said. “because it’s just against us. It’s nice coming out here and just being able to go all out and just take it out.”

Spartans start strong

they envisioned with a 46-0 win over Kelvyn Park Friday night.

Senior running back Will Purdom carried the ball two times, but for 90 yards and two touchdowns. His long run of the night was a 69-yard touchdown as part of the Spartans’ four rushing touchdowns on the night.

The Spartans (1-0) attempted just three passes, one of which was caught by Michael Beach for a 30-yard touchdown.

But a majority of their damage came on the ground as they finished with 19 rushes for 194 yards as a team. John Krisco and Matt Pell also ran for scores.

Grudzielanek said all players with at least 10 seasons of Major League service can head to any MLB stadium, present the pass to the proper official and be granted “two tickets anywhere you want, any game, and they’ve got to give you the two best tickets they have.”

Between his retirement in 2010 and rejoining organized baseball over the winter, however, Grudzielanek

doesn’t remember cashing in on the opportunity much, if at all.

“I’d be happy to buy tickets when it’s the time, but now that I’m back in the game, all my tickets are given to me again,” Grudzielanek said.

For two nights only, Cougars fans gladly are enjoying the same luxury. Haug said the front office has received calls for ticket reservations since the club announced the Fan Appreciation Night promotion in recent weeks.

Tonight’s Fan Appreciation doubles as the final “Bark in the Park” of the season, as well.

“Yeah,” closer Zac Curtis said. “A lot of dogs out here.”

He meant the domesticated variety, which are allowed into the right field lawn area for free.

The Cougars’ One-Cent Wiener Wednesdays, a hot dog lover’s paradise during its run this season, still came equipped with a cost.

East falls to South Elgin in opener

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – The St. Charles East football team felt pretty good about itself heading into halftime Saturday, and even better after quarterback Zach Mitchell’s touchdown run cut the South Elgin lead to eight with just over five minutes to play.

But the Storm responded right away, and things began to unravel for the Saints, as South Elgin capitalized on mistakes to get the 28-6 win in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

The Saints (0-1) recently adopted the triple option offense and had success at times wearing down the South Elgin defense. But aside from Mitchell’s eight-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run, East had trouble finishing off drives for much of the day.

“We couldn’t finish once we got into the red zone,” Mitchell said. “We’re such a young team, and I think we’re only going to get better from here.

Today can definitely be a learning experience, and once we get better, we can help out the defense.”

Mitchell credited the East defense for keeping the Saints in the game as long as it did.

The game remained scoreless until South Elgin quarterback Jake AmRhein hooked up with his favorite target, Derek Kumerow, on a 55-yard touchdown with 1:38 left in the first half.

The Saints had trouble containing Kumerow for most of the day. Whether it was quick passes or a couple deep over the top of the East defense, Kumerow was a handful. He finished with 10 catches for 197 yards and a score.

“This was really the first meaningful fourth quarter this group has played in awhile,” East coach Bryce Farquhar said. “We’re a young team and we’re learning. We’re certainly not happy with the result. We don’t accept the result because we know we can be better. It took time to get used to things, but there were positives.”

Even with a few big plays by the Storm (1-0), who will visit Batavia (1-0) next week in what shapes up to be a high-scoring affair, the Saints gave themselves a chance after Mitchell’s touchdown run.

But South Elgin answered.

And quickly. On the first play of the ensuing drive, AmRhein handed the ball to veteran running back Shawn Griffin, who bounced off a couple tackles and went 60 yards for a score.

Glass, pottery, bronze, silver and of course, paper and canvas, are all used to make important, and often expensive, works of art. But wood has been somewhat neglected as art, although highly regarded for useful furniture.

Eighteenth-century furniture was made with hand tools and decorated with carvings, inlay and the selection of attractive grain in the woods.

The nineteen century increased the amount of carved decoration. By the 1890s, there were Black Forest benches, tables, hall trees, and other furniture held by life-sized carved wooden bears. Twentieth-century craftsman and artist George Nakashima (19051990) made his unique wooden art furniture from slabs of wood. Wendell Castle (born 1932) made modern furniture, including a carved wooden coat and hat rack holding a wooden coat, and a park bench that appears to be growing from a tall tangle of vines.

Artists today are using wood to make sculptures, statues, puzzle boxes and huge burl bowls that are sold at art galleries, not furniture stores. Now is the time to start collecting wooden art.

There are artists making everything from realistic to abstract and science fiction inspired carvings. Go to art shows, or just browse the internet and find the carvings that you admire.

Trust your taste. There are caricatures, humorous figures, life-size statues and tiny imaginary animals. A talented Italian artist, Livio De Marchi, makes life-like carvings of everyday items.

He leaves them unpainted so the wood grain and defects will show. A golf bag with six clubs, a single piece

of carved wood, sold for $3,240 at a recent Skinner auction in Boston. *** Q: I have two gunpowder dispensers that I believe are from the Civil War era and belonged to a relative who fought in that war. One is made of copper and the other of leather. Both are in great condition and work well.

One still has grains of gunpowder in it. Is there any monetary or historical value to these items? I’m considering donating them to a museum.

A: First, get rid of the gunpowder!

Old explosives can be dangerous. You can take the powder flask to a gun range and ask them to dispose of the residual powder. Reenactors and people who collect Civil War memorabilia might be interested in your powder flasks, especially if you can give them information about your ancestor and his service in the Civil War. Powder flasks that are signed or have decoration sell for more than plain powder flasks. A signed copper Civil War powder flask sold for $47, and another for $135 recently. Leather powder flasks with historically significant decoration sell for $100 or more. *** Q: I recently bought a bankers chair

A: W.B. Moses opened a furniture store in Washington, D.C., in the 1860s. Business expanded and by 1898 W.B. Moses & Sons occupied several buildings, including shops and manufacturing facilities. The company redecorated some of the rooms in the White House in 1881, supplying new carpeting, drapes, and furniture. Value of your chair, $50-$100.

** * Q: I received this lamp from my mother-in-law. It’s brass, has a pierced corrugated frame over a burner, and a small plaque on the front that has a wolf and reads “Permissible Miners Flame Safety Lamp, Safety Lamp Co. of America.” It also has a tag with the number 28 and a hook for hanging.

Can you tell me a little about its history and value?

A: You have a coal miner’s lamp, made by the Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of America of Brooklyn, N.Y. Until the development of safe electric lamps in the early 1900s, coal miners used flame lamps to provide light. Lamps with open flames could ignite flammable gas or dust and cause explosions, so

safety lamps were invented to enclose the flame. Before World War I, Wolf was a distributor for safety lamps made in Germany. After the war, the company made lamp tools and accessories and their own safety lamps that burned naphtha, vegetable oil and carbide. Wolf operated until the 1960s. Your lamp burned a mixture of carbide and water. The “permissible” engraved on the lamp means it passed safety tests and was approved by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (in 1921), and the hang tag represents the miner’s number. Your lamp is from the early 1920s and is worth about $100. * ** Q: I have a hand-painted plate marked with a crown above a circle with an eagle inside. The name of the company is written around the circle.

It looks like it might be Carrolton or Carrinton Pottery Co. Can you identify the maker?

A: Yes! The mark you describe is one of several used by Carrolltown Pottery Co., founded in Carrollton, Ohio, in 1903. It joined seven other potteries to form the American Chinaware Corporation in 1929. After the merger ended in 1931, Carrolltown Pottery continued to operate on its own until at least 1936.

Not only does litter look ugly, it can cause serious harm to wild animals – even to animals that live far away from where the litter was first dropped. Some litter looks like food. Other litter can tangle animals, leaving them trapped so that they can’t find food or escape predators.

Litter can wash into rivers and streams and be carried to oceans and bays. There, birds, sea turtles and even whales can become entangled. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and try to eat them.

Eating plastic bags is very dangerous for any animal.

Woman becoming nun needs support, not concern Dear Abby: I was best friends

with “Joanne” after we met in middle school. She comes from a conservative Christian family and has three successful siblings. This has made her quirky, media-driven pursuits and city life a disappointment to her family. When we were teens and she learned that I was a straight ally for gay rights, she came out to me as a lesbian, but for years only I and a few close friends knew.

Once she was an adult and her family found out, they practically disowned her and made their disapproval and “shame” very clear. Unfortunately, due to some family problems of my own, I moved away, and we communicated only periodically for the last couple of years until recently. I was shocked when she informed me that she is going to become a nun.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips with her faith (I attend an LGBT-friendly church), but I’m afraid Joanne is doing it for all the wrong reasons. For the 15 years I have known her, she has been an open-minded, culture-loving social butterfly, and she doesn’t seem to have changed much personality-wise.

Naturally, her family is thrilled with her decision because it means she will never date another woman or be a part of “that lifestyle.”

press your concerns,” I think you should have enough respect for your friend’s intelligence to ask her what has prompted this life-changing decision, and what it will entail.

Will she be joining an order that wears a habit? (Not all nuns do anymore.) Will she be taking a vow of silence and shutting herself off from the world for a life of prayer and contemplation, or will she be working to help underprivileged communities?

Does she plan to remain in the United States, or join an order like Mother Teresa’s in some other country?

Here are practical tips to prevent motion sickness Dear Doctor K: I have a lot of travel coming up for work. The problem is that I get motion sickness in cars, trains, planes – basically everything that moves.

I’d love some practical tips for relief.

Dear Reader: Motion sickness often conjures images of ships tossed on stormy seas. In reality, motion sickness can be brought on by traveling in a car or bus, flying in an airplane, or even something as simple as watching a movie with jerky camera shots. The most common symptoms are dizziness and nausea, sometimes with vomiting. You can also experience cold sweats, drowsiness and headaches.

Motion sickness is caused by what’s known as a “neural mismatch.” It’s also called sensory conflict. Normally your eyes, muscles, joints and the balance mechanism in your inner ear send messages to your brain about your body’s movement in space.

The neural mismatch that causes motion sickness usually follows one of two patterns. The first is when your body experiences motion that your eyes can’t see. One example of this is being below deck on a rocking boat or ship. Everything in the

The other type of neural mismatch occurs when your body is not actually moving, but your eyes tell it that it is. This can happen when you are watching a movie in a widescreen theater.

Whatever the reason, motion sickness is no fun. Here are some tips to help prevent it.

• Travel on an empty stomach.

• On an airplane, try to get an aisle seat toward the center of the cabin, where motion is the calmest. On a ship, request a lower-level cabin toward the middle of the vessel to minimize motion.

• Avoid odors such as perfume, smoke or cooking smells.

Open a window for fresh air if possible. Turn on the air vent if you’re on an airplane.

• If you are very prone to motion sickness, don’t read or watch videos while traveling.

• During a bumpy car or boat ride, try keeping your gaze fixed

on something stationary, like the horizon.

• Avoid alcohol when traveling.

If these tips don’t help, consider motion sickness medications. Over-the-counter drugs include dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) and meclizine (Bonine). Prescription medications include promethazine (Phenergan) and scopolamine (Transderm Scop), a patch worn behind the ear. Adding caffeine to these medicines (particularly promethazine) may provide additional relief. A word of caution: In some people, adding caffeine after noontime can lead to poor quality sleep that night.

And sleep deprivation may make people more vulnerable to motion sickness.

A final word of caution: Most motion sickness medications tend to make people drowsy. So, be careful about using them if you are the driver, captain or pilot of that car, boat or plane that may cause your motion sickness.

Boyfriend should mind business Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have an 11:30 p.m. curfew. When my sister was 16, she had a midnight curfew. I don’t think this is fair. When I complained to my parents, they said that my sister had a better attitude, got better grades and did not talk back. What’s all that got to do with a curfew?

I’m every bit as mature at 16 as she was – maybe more.

I’m totally upset at my parents. I feel they are prejudiced because they don’t like my boyfriend, and if I don’t get my curfew extended, I won’t have a boyfriend.

Keith isn’t happy that I have to be home at the ungodly early time of 11:30. Help! – Nameless, Cumberland, Maryland Dear Nameless: Consider yourself fortunate that you can stay out as late as 11:30. I realize that you and your sister are two different people with divergent personalities, but somehow I get the impression that you don’t enjoy earning things; you’d rather have them handed to you on a silver platter.

It’s time you learned the meaning of maturity. The essence of maturity is thinking beyond your own immediate desires – or those of your boyfriend – and taking responsibility for your actions. If you begin to do so, and throw in a pleasant attitude, your parents may be so thrilled that they will reconsider that curfew.

Give it a try.

P.S. – Your curfew is set by your parents, and it is none of Keith’s concern. I can clearly see why your sister had a later curfew. Good grades, better attitude and a pleasant disposition deserve a reward.

Bulimics have died from their eating disorders. This usually happens when they choke to death while vomiting.

In this deal, South is in six spades. West leads the heart queen.

South wins with his ace and cashes his spade ace, but an easy contract suddenly turns tough when West discards a heart.

How might declarer avoid losing a trick in each major suit?

After North made a game-invitational limit raise, South sensibly bid what he thought he could make. Why give the defenders extra information?

South has to hope that East has at most two hearts.

Declarer plays a spade to dummy’s king and eliminates the minors, ruffing dummy’s third card in each suit.

Then he cashes the heart king before exiting with a trump.

The question of the adoption of said Ordinance shall be submitted to the electors of the District if a petition is filed with the District signed by 2,125 voters asking that the question of levying such .02% tax be submitted to the electors of the District.
