Anti industrial park group wants to address aldermen Keep Batavia Neighborhoods want to voice opposition again

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Members of the group Keep Batavia Neighborhoods, which has voiced opposition to a proposed industrial park at Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass, will find out next week whether they will be able to address aldermen again.

The group’s members, along with other residents, recently crowded the Bata-

via City Council chambers to show opposition to the project. Keep Batavia Neighborhoods had been invited back to talk to aldermen at their Aug. 19 Joint Committee of the Whole meeting.

But now that discussion might not take place.

“The developer hasn’t presented a plan yet,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said Friday. “There isn’t anything new to discuss. They are still

working on their submittal, as far as I know.”

Aldermen will decide at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting whether the item will stay on the agenda, Buening said. Keep Batavia Neighborhoods member Dennis Merritt said he is disappointed that the group might not get to address aldermen.

“Why are we this far down the road without a plan?”

Merritt asked. “There is no good case to rezone the land.”

He has made an offer to purchase the Prairie Commons property. Merritt has been in the real estate business for 30 years. His propos-

al calls for 242 town houses to be built on the land, which is what originally was proposed.

Plan commissioners in April voted, 4-3, to recommend amending the city’s comprehensive plan and zoning map to allow for an industrial park on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses. The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. City officials in 2005 annexed the property.

Veterinarian Thomas Brooks, of the Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic in North Aurora, would like to change that.

He is trying to start a Boy Scout troop in North Aurora.

“I felt bad our North Aurora boys were going elsewhere to be in a Boy Scout troop instead of staying here,” Brooks said. “We should have a Boy Scout troop in this community.”

The village has two active Cub Scout packs, but it has not had a Boy Scout troop since the 1990s, Brooks said.

Brooks had served as the Scoutmaster of Troop 3 in Aurora, and he would serve as the Scoutmaster of the new troop.

He will be joined by Jan

Lundsteen, who will be the troop committee chairman as it gets organized. Lundsteen started Troop 46 in Lily Lake.

The new troop will meet at Union Congregational Church, 405 State St., North Aurora, which is the chartering organization. The troop will be part of the Foxfire District, which serves West and East Aurora school districts.

“Everything is in place except the Scouts,” Brooks said.

The minimum number of boys needed to start a troop is five, Brooks said.

According to the Boy Scouts’ website, www.scouting.org, a boy is eligible to be a Scout if he is 11 years old, or if he has completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and is at least 10 years old but is not yet 18 years old.

SETTING THE STAGE Home staging valuable tool in real estate market

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Katie Meisenger looked twice at a Batavia home for sale in 2013, but she could not see herself and her family living there.

Meisenger wanted to move her family from a smaller space in North Aurora and had her eyes on a nearly 5,000-square-foot home in the Tanglewood Hills subdivision on the city’s west side.

Since the home was vacant, all she could see was the wear and tear until Showhomes, a home staging company, worked on the space.

“The Realtor took us in the third time, and that’s really when it came alive,” Meisenger said.

The furniture, hanging pictures and other decorative accents added to every room gave the home a certain warmth and sparked ideas for what she could do with the space. Two days later, Meisenger and her husband put in an offer, and they have lived there with their three children since November.

The Meisengers’ story is one of many that demonstrate the benefit of home staging.

Staging involves strategically changing the appearance of a home to make it look more desirable in the hopes a buyer will make an offer.

Riehle said she almost always refers sellers to St. Charles-based Finishing Touches Interior Design, which offers staging services. She said she and other brokers turn more often to home staging in the current real estate market.

Homes are selling close to their list price and receiving multiple offers from buyers, Riehle said.

Since buyers can be pickier, staging can be helpful to set a property apart from others, she said.

Home staging companies contract directly with sellers, and real estate brokers see them as valuable to their marketing, said Margaret Gehr, owner of Chicagoland Home Staging. The way homes look on a computer screen is important, especially in today’s digital age, Gehr said.

have lived in an 8,000 squarefoot staged home since October in the Crane Road Estate neighborhood in St. Charles Township. They have lived in about 10 houses since they sold their Batavia home and purchased the franchise in December 2008 in the midst of the Great Recession.

Mike Callahan uses his mortgage banking background, and Janine Callahan uses her decorating background to lead a team of eight people. They figure they eventually will go back to a permanent home, but they call the current phase in their lives an adventure.

Tap House hosts fundraiser to benefit wildlife center

“It’s the end of the summer, and we are really struggling financially. Funds are drained because of the busy baby season,” volunteer Andrea Krueger wrote in an email. “We hope to raise $5,000 to continue our mission of helping wildlife in

need.”

To support the fundraiser, customers can go to the Tap House for lunch or dinner, donate $5 to the wildlife center and get a coupon for a free appetizer for a future visit.

PATRICIA C. FRANCIS Born: Dec. 1, 1934 Died: Aug. 4, 2014 Patricia C. Francis, age 79, died August 4, 2014, following a long illness.

She was born December 1st 1934, in Washington DC, daughter of the late Milton and Helen Collins. She was the oldest of three siblings: her brother Jack (Nancy) Collins; her sister Sue Nunn, and is preceded in death by her brother Chip Collins.

Pat was a 35 year resident of St. Charles, IL and was an active mem-

ber of the community. She was a member of the Pottawatomie Garden club for many years, and held several Board positions leading up to presidency of the group. She also focused on fundraising with Restoration of Kane County (now Preservation Partner’s) and held terms as secretary and president of the historic agency.

While chair of the Public Art Committee in St. Charles she raised funds for, and placed three public art projects: The Pottawatomie Park mural at S. 2nd Street and Illinois; the vignette mural at Rt. 64 and S. 1st Ave., and the Fox Cycle Sculpture along the Fox River. Pat was a volunteer with The Arts Society and The Gallery Committee of the Norris Cultural Center; The Delnor-Community Auxiliary Antique Show and The State’s Attorney’s Second Chance Program.

She was also an active member of Thornapple Questers, an antique study group. In addition, she served on the Board of Director’s Executive Committee of the Arthritis Foundation, Illinois Chapter, out of its Chicago office and was directly involved with patient services. She was honored with the “Distinguished Service Award” for her work with the foundation.

Pat moved to Flat Rock, NC in 2007. She was an active member of the Garden Club there. She enjoyed the frequent get together’s with the ladies in her book club.

She also enjoyed traveling with her husband Lee, going to the theater, reading, gardening, antiquing, and had an eye for decorating. Pat was especially proud of all the accomplishments of her children and her grandchildren.

George Pope Turner, artist, gentleman farmer and fierce individualist, died at age 70, on July 18, 2014. Born on August 29, 1943.

He was the son of George Hullburne Turner and Dorothy Pope Turner of Glen Ellyn.

Displaying manifold artistic talents at an early age, George attended Knox College as an undergraduate, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He was then accepted at the University of Chicago School of Fine Arts, where he was awarded a Masters of Fine Arts degree.

George also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, which purchased two of his paintings.

In the early 1960s, George served in the U.S. Army and was based for two years in Germany.

Upon his return to the states, George’s art career blossomed. He held a studio in the Pilsen area of Chicago before moving to the Fox Valley, west of Chicago. Through the years, George worked in many media and styles - some uniquely

of his own invention - from oil paintings, to abstract landscapes in water colors, to whimsical collages. He created his own style of “bag art”, and copywrited series, “Mano Man” .

George was also a dedicated “gentleman farmer”, having inherited farms in Central Illinois, that were passed down through three generations of the Pope side of his family. He took great pride in the farms’ productivity and visited them often.

In 1988, George married Judy L. Hogan and soon became the loving father of Deanne Hogan-Turner, who graduated in May of this year from the Florida Coastal School of Law with a Juris Doctorate Degree, and George Hogan Turner, who graduated from St. Francis High School in Wheaton, also in May of this year, and who will matriculate at Miami University of Ohio.

George’s art reflected his personality. He was undaunted by what others might think. He found the world amusing and he had an uncanny knack for identifying and characterizing, in a quip, the humor or irony hidden in almost any situation.

He was active in the Fox Valley arts community for 30 years, most notably in Elgin, Batavia and Aurora. George’s last exhibition, which he attended, was held at Architect Lane Allen’s offices in Aurora during Aurora’s “First Friday” event in June.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his sister, Theresa.

In addition to his family, he is survived by his dear cousins, Carol Makepeace of Minnesota and Beth Valenzuela of Arizona.

The life of George Pope Turner is evidence not only of the fact that art enriches the lives of those who indulge in or appreciate it, but that living a good, honest and fulfilling life is an art, in and of itself.

A memorial retrospective honoring the life and work of George Pope Turner will be held at the David L. Pierce Art & History Center, downtown Aurora at 20 E. Downer Pl, 3rd fl, on Friday, August 15, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00pm.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles this year will pay more for its road rock salt than in previous years because of widespread depleted salt supplies.

The St. Charles City Council on Monday voted, 10-0, in favor of purchasing 7,000 tons of salt from Elgin-based Central Salt for the 2014-15 snow removal season at a cost of $93.75 a ton.

The total cost of $656,250 is $206,250 more than what the city budgeted for snow removal expenses, said Chris Minick, the city’s finance director.

The city will have to pay the difference from an addition to its budget, according to an executive summary of the proposed salt purchase.

Minick said the city was left with little choice after the harsh winter severely

depleted vendor and manufacturer salt supplies.

Because of the lack of salt, St. Charles and about 195 other municipalities received an unprecedented no bid response, meaning vendors did not bid a price or commit to salt delivery for a significant number of locations, according to a July 25 letter from Minick to city leaders.

The city went with the $93.75 Central Salt quote and awaits pricing from Morton Salt, one of its traditional suppliers.

The bid offers that some municipalities did receive ranged from $70 to more than $140 a ton of salt, according to a July 17 email the city received from the state of Illinois.

“Our quote of $93.75 is not the cheapest that’s out there, but it’s not the most expensive,” Minick said to the aldermen on Monday.

They also often function as an auditory barrier to other birds, telling them in essence to “Back off! Scram! Beat it Bucko!” Or, in more polite terms, “Please move along.

This space is taken. Have a nice day.”

That the songs occur most enthusiastically at dawn is no fluke. The air usually is still at this time of day, so sounds travel better. And because the sun has yet to creep fully above the horizon, lighting is

poor and foraging is difficult.

Besides, the insects that make up the bulk of most birds’ breeding-season diets have yet to start their own activities of the day. (More on this later.)

Singing may sound like fun, but the responsibilities that come with it adds up to a lot of hard work.

Typically these burdens fall to the male of the species, who gives them his all, all day (or night, if he happens to be an owl or a nightjar. Or a killdeer. Those guys vocalize

to have these guys in your neighborhood, you’re likely still hearing their elaborate compositions of twitters and warbles, as well as their flight calls – a sound guaranteed to make you crave salty snacks: “Po-ta-to-chip, po-ta-to-chip!”

But without the other species singing their parts, the goldfinches become soloists.

At least among the avian species.

Other groups of animals, meanwhile, are starting to make themselves known. The male annual cicadas ramped up their tymbals – the ribbed membranes responsible for making a variety of species-specific sounds – around July 4. Male crickets and grasshoppers are grating their rasps. And this past Tuesday night, for the first time this year, I heard male katydids calling from the trees of the Hickory Knolls Natural Area.

Many birds may have quieted down, but the air is still filled with whirrs, clicks, buzzes and chirps. We’re into August now, and these are the sounds ... of summer.

Did you hear what I heard?

Every morning for the past week or so, as I’ve crawled out of bed to greet the day, a certain presence has met my ears. Unobtrusive yet persistent, it was hard to ignore.

It was the sound ... of silence.

Oh sure, here in suburbia, things are never completely quiet. There’s always something clamoring about, be it cars driving by or airplanes flying overhead. Or that quintessential neighborhood noisemaker, the lawn mower, droning in the distance.

But the other sounds, the ones we’ve become accustomed to hearing at daybreak and before, are just plain gone. Done, over, finished, complete; packed up and put away until next spring.

We’re talking of course about the sounds of the birds.

The American robin’s repetitive “Cheery-up, cheerio.” The northern cardinal’s “Birdybirdy-birdy” (or, alternatively, “What-cheer, what-cheer, cheer, cheer”). The blackcapped chickadee’s “Fee-bee” or, from some individuals, “Hi sweetie!”

It’s fun to imagine these birds singing away in happy reverie, thrilled to be up and about and ready to tackle whatever the day may bring.

But really, those songs of sweet cheer are essential components of the birds’ most all-encompassing pursuits: finding a mate, reproducing and defending the breeding territory. The sounds serve as a sign of the singer’s breeding fitness. They serve as a means of communication between a

The male red-eyed vireo, a bird common in rich woods throughout our area, can repeat his song more than 20,000 times each day. The pugnacious house wren, a tireless defender of backyard nest boxes, can sing his complex symphony of trills, bubbles and churrs 10 times in a single minute.

Downy and hairy woodpeckers don’t have much of a voice, but they make up for this lack with an amazing set of adaptations.

These birds can drum their bills against a tree (or siding or gutter) in bursts clocked at 25 beats a second, with no residual damage to their brain or skull.

If you live near water or wetlands you’re no doubt acquainted with the male red-winged blackbird’s “Conka-reee!” song, a territorial signal he often backs up with sneak attacks of startling, yet harmless, body slams from behind.

But who can blame him?

His job includes keeping watch over multiple nests, multiple mates and multiple offspring, making sure none of his redwing neighbors – or anything else red – encroaches on his turf.

Alas, all these singing and drumming and dive-bombing activities have wound down to virtually nil. The only birds still tasked with nestling-rearing are the American goldfinches, a species whose breeding cycle revolves around the availability of thistle and milkweed down. By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – On the heels of announcing his office has earned national accreditation, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell came under attack Friday for breaking budget promises and spending money on such items as Silly Putty.

The criticism followed briefings from other county officials about their proposed 2015 budget requests and revisions they have made since July to help reduce a potential $2 million shortfall in the general fund.

Russell has proposed a nearly $950,000 budget. After a contentious budget process last year, he agreed to an $843,000 budget for the next three years.

“You did promise us that,” County Board member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, said at the Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting.

Russell said his budget includes items beyond his control, such as forensic pathologist fees and autopsies.

“I’m not going to make a decision on autopsies based on finances,” he said.

Board members also questioned Russell about hiring attorney Ken Shepro as a financial consultant, and Board Chairman Chris Lauzen quizzed the coroner on the number of vehicles in his fleet and a receipt for 1,000 units of Silly Putty.

Russell described the latter as trinkets for events such as National Night Out. The coroner then criticized Lauzen for paying former Coroner Mary Lou Kearns $10,000 to $20,000 to conduct an audit on autopsies his office performed in 2013.

The audit was triggered by Russell going over the budget, Lauzen said, and the results should provide guidance for the future.

er save the county that money by assigning the work to a task force that would include other coroners.

Board members also urged Russell to install new equipment in the morgue so it could reopen. Mold recently was found at the facility, prompting Russell to outsource forensic operations to DuPage County.

“I think the Kane County coroner belongs in Kane County,” said Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills.

About $76,000 already is approved for a new cooler and freezer – equipment Russell said can be removed and expanded to accommodate a new facility.

In addition to addressing his office’s immediate needs, Russell asked board members to start plans for a new coroner’s facility by placing it on the five-year plan.

Noting the recent accreditation, Russell said, “We are worth investing into.”

Superintendent selection should be carefully made Kaneland School District 302 is in need of a new superintendent.

Last week, District 302 publicly announced that Jeff Schuler intended to resign as leader of the district, a post he has held for four years.

Schuler’s resignation as superintendent of Kaneland schools will become effective the first week of September. He then will go on to become the superintendent of Wheaton Warrenville School District 200.

Despite the fact that the school year will start soon, the search for a new District 302 superintendent should not be rushed, nor should the preparation of any potential contractual paperwork related to the new hire.

By many accounts, Schuler had a positive impact on Kaneland schools. A statement from the district regarding Schuler’s resignation noted that he oversaw four years of balanced budgets, increases in student achievement and an expansive use of technology.

The new superintendent should bring a host of strengths to the table. He or she should have an extensive education background and leadership qualities that match what the school board seeks.

In addition, the person ideally would have some familiarity with the Kaneland region, its challenges and its strengths.

Sure, the timing of losing Schuler is not great.

But rushing such an important hire could lead to negative consequences. The school board should take its time with its candidate search, and perhaps should consider bringing on an interim superintendent in the meantime.

On top of that – as several school board members noted at a meeting Aug. 4 – the district should tread carefully when it comes to the possibility of offering any potential candidate a long-term contract. Schuler had signed a contract extension that went through the 2015-16 school year. His imminent departure for District 200 means his contract will go unfulfilled.

As board member Tony Valente pointed out during the recent meeting: “The board made a commitment that was not returned,” adding that “in the future, we should not give long-term contracts” or make sure such contracts are honored.

The District 302 board has an important choice to make in selecting its new superintendent. We wish board members the best of luck in conducting their search for a new leader.

Congress needs to fix immigration law THE WASHINGTON POST Stymied by congressional paralysis, President Barack Obama is reportedly considering unilateral action to address – though surely not fix – the nation’s immigration policy mess and the more recent surge of minors streaming across the southwestern border.

The president’s frustration is understandable. Faced with a genuine humanitarian crisis, Congress’ failure to pass a workable fix is unconscionable. In the Republican-controlled House, the GOP bowed to its most extreme lawmakers in passing measures that have zero chance of becoming law – and would have paved the way for deportations of blameless young people raised in this country after being brought here by their undocumented parents. In the Senate, the intransigence of both parties yielded no bill at all.

Obstinate, hopelessly partisan and incapable of problem-solving, Congress is a mess. But that doesn’t grant the president license to tear up the Constitution.

As Obama himself said last fall:

“If, in fact, I could solve all these problems without passing laws in Congress, then I would do so. But we’re also a nation of laws.”

To act on his own, the president said, would violate those laws.

Obama now seems to be jettisoning that stance in the name of rallying his political base. He is considering extending temporary protection from deportation to millions of illegal immigrants, including the parents of U.S.-born children and others who have lived in the United States for years. Conceivably, this would give Democrats a political boost in 2016.

The president should think twice. Some of the same Democrats and pro-immigrant advocates urging him to protect millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation would be outraged if a Republican president took a similarly selective approach to enforcing the laws.

Even without congressional action, the president can do certain things to ease the immigration crisis.

He can ensure that the tens

of thousands of unaccompanied Central American children who have streamed into the country are treated humanely and accorded due process in the immigration courts under existing law.

Obama’s own vacillations have not helped cope with the crisis. He was right to identify a 2008 anti-trafficking law as a key source of the problem. Inadvertently, that law has encouraged thousands of Central American children to try to reach the United States by granting them access to immigration courts that Mexican kids don’t enjoy; the effect has been months-long backups in the courts. Initially, the president said he would propose changes to the law to hasten deportations.

Faced with opposition from Democrats, he backed down days later.

The right response to the collapse of the U.S. immigration system is for Congress to fix the law.

It does not follow that Congress can be ignored based on its failure to act. The right response to lawmakers who won’t solve the immigration mess is to replace them with ones who will.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

We are stuck with the mess with the electric department, so why not try to offset the burden on the people of Batavia by increasing the revenue taken in by video gambling? Just think – there may be enough money left over to put up another ugly arch or two.

McNulty named new assistant regional superintendent Takes role with Kane County Regional Office of Education

By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com Paige McNulty is taking on the first tasks in her role as assistant regional superintendent for the Kane County Regional Office of Education.

After 21 years of experience in education, McNulty said she was hired for the new job July 1. Working mainly with Patricia Dal Santo, regional superintendent for the Kane County Regional Office of Education, McNulty said she now earns a $100,000 year-

ly salary.

McNulty’s duties involve truancy, GED, juvenile drug court, home school and school safety inspections, in addition to student homelessness and transp o r t a t i o n , Paige McNulty according to a news release from the Kane County Regional Office of Education.

“Right now, I’m trying to

learn all the different systems and how they all work together in districts, and see how I can partner with them to help support them,” McNulty said.

McNulty’s previous job was with Mid-Valley Special Education Cooperative in St. Charles. She worked with one school district there, and she said the chance to work with nine school districts drew her to the new job.

“The Office of Regional Education gives me the opportunity to work with a wider array of communities and try to partner with agencies to do truancy, intervention outreach services and community linkages for students and their families for many schools instead of just one,”

McNulty has a MBA from Indiana University and a master’s degree in education and administration from Indiana

State University, according to the release. In June 2015, McNulty said she will finish her dissertation for an Ed.D. in educational leadership from National Louis University.

“She’s basically a lifelong learner,” Dal Santo said about McNulty. “Which is what education is all about.”

Dal Santo said the application process lasted three to four weeks with more than 30 applicants, only five of whom were interviewed.

“What stood out about [McNulty] is the experience she had,” Dal Santo said. “The fact that she worked in Kane County and knows about Kane County and our educational needs.”

Golf pro fulfilling dream Burn victim Jamie Nieto of Pheasant Run doesn’t let naysayers get in his way

kdruley@shawmedia.com Jamie Nieto’s master plan to make golf an integral part of his life originated when he was a teenager, and actually was more practical than you might think.

A budding golfer at East Leyden High in Franklin Park, Nieto entertained no delusions of grandeur about earning a PGA Tour card to accompany his student ID. Instead, he’d be a high school teacher and golf coach who’d play during summers and maybe work at a nearby club part-time.

Nieto had one year of college behind him when that plan and his life drastically reversed course. A November 2003 yard work accident left more than half his body burned, and a medically induced coma and severe muscular atrophy preceded his eventual recovery.

As the second-year club professional at Pheasant Run in St. Charles chatted with members and players who strolled by the pro shop this week, Nieto once more felt affirmation.

“I had enough of sitting in a lecture hall, classrooms. I kind of said let’s do something you’re really going to enjoy,” Nieto said. “Not that I wouldn’t have enjoyed teaching, but I just felt like this is where I wanted to be.”

Nieto, 30, is hovering around a zero handicap both on the course and as a burn survivor. He tries to tear away from administrative work when he can to fit in range time and is a regular in Illinois PGA section events.

He shot 81 in his first recreational round after his accident – in the spring of 2005 – and boasts a career-best of 65 at Pheasant Run. And to think, in his first days at Loyola University’s burn center Nieto heard he’d likely never play golf again.

“Every time I’ve been faced with something I want to do, I go after it,” Nieto said. “If you tell me you can’t do it, I’m going to do it just to prove you wrong.

Pheasant Run’s annual “Birdies For Burns” golf outing, a fundraiser benefiting burn awareness and the Loyola University burn center, is set for Aug. 29.

The day begins with a buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m., with a 1 p.m. shotgun start to follow. A dinner at 6 p.m. caps the event.

Cost is $700 a foursome or $175 per individual. A ticket for dinner and festivities costs $60.

He worked with a physical therapist to get on the range as soon as possible.

At the time, he still had not undergone reconstructive surgery on his right thumb, so he worked with the therapist to create a method to help extend the thumb and allow him to hold a club. Simultaneously, Nieto finished and furthered his studies. With two associates degrees – one each from Triton and the Golf Academy of America in Myrtle Beach, S.C. – and a bachelor’s and master’s from Virginia College online, he jokes his sheepskins add up to a PhD. “A lot of PhD people get mad when I say that,” Nieto grinned.

Through everything, Nieto clings to his sense of humor, sharing in laughs with his family, friends and girlfriend of nearly three years.

One more Mauer Former American League Most Valuable Player Joe Mauer’s ongoing rehab from a strained oblique coincided with the Cougars’ visit to Cedar Rapids this weekend.

Mauer is a Kernel for the near future, as he spends time with the Class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins managed by his older brother, Jake. The Mauers were Midwest League teammates with Quad Cities in 2002.

Joe Mauer sat out Thursday’s series opener against the Cougars after going 1 for 6 in two games against Wisconsin earlier this week.

He is expected to play again today before being re-evaluated Sunday.

“Tennessee was just amazing. Amazing,” Ana Almora said. “To have the field that’s gorgeous between the mountains, the area there is beautiful. It gets super crowded. Just tike Daytona, they’re really into the baseball team. It was awesome.”

Albert Almora has remained healthy in 2014, avoiding the hand and groin injuries that limited him in his first full professional season.

Entering Friday, he was batting .271 overall in 102 games, with eight home runs, 53 RBIs and six stolen bases.

Initial struggles at Ten-

nessee – .189 in 13 games – have been a challenge, but the always-upbeat Almora maintains a diligent work ethic to move past them.

Ana Almora said her son assures it’s not a crutch, but acknowledged he is affected by his father’s February diagnosis with prostate cancer.

Albert Almora returned home for two days for his father’s April surgery, which was successful.

Ana Almora said her husband appears to be on the mend but has reached “a critical point” of persistent testing to ensure his blood levels are normal.

In the latest twist of an already quirky schedule, the Cougars will host Quad Cities for a mere three games from Tuesday through Thursday before hitting the road again. The same thing happened last weekend.

One member of the River Bandits staff who won’t make that or any trip is outfielder/baserunning coach Vine Coleman, a speedster who played with six major league teams – most notably the St. Louis Cardinals – from 1985 to 1997. Coleman works with Quad Cities during home games, then serves as a roving instructor for the parent Houston Astros while the club is away.

“Great guy, great teacher,” River Bandits manager Omar Lopez said.

A former ballplayer in Cuba before he defected, Almora’s father naturally uses baseball to get by. Much like they did with Cougars’ broadcasts in 2013, the family flocks each night to the Internet radio calls of Almora’s games, bobbleheads or not.

“Oh, yes. Constantly,” Ana Almora said. “Constantly. Wherever it’s available.”

For the second straight summer, a box of bobbleheads depicting Albert and Ana Almora’s son arrived in the mail at their south Florida home.

On Tuesday, the first 1,500 fans through the gates for the Cougars’ 6:30 p.m. game against visiting Quad Cities will get to see the doll, too.

While the model’s muse, Cubs minor league outfielder Albert Almora, won’t be on hand, he appreciates anyone reliving the 61 games he spent in a No. 2 Cougars jersey in 2013.

“You know,” Ana Almora said, “it’s an honor for us.”

At this rate, the Almoras could receive separate deliveries in 2015 after Short-A Boise started the trend last summer.

Albert Almora, the Cubs’ first-round selection in the 2012 MLB Draft, opened this season with Advanced-A Daytona before earning a promotion to Double-A Tennessee last month.

Occasional visitors to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in 2013, the Almoras saw much more of their son at Daytona, just five hours from their home in Hialeah Gardens, Florida, outside Miami.

“We loved the atmosphere there, we loved the team, the coaching staff. Everything was wonderful,” Ana Almora said.

She also spoke highly of Smokies Park in Kodak, Tennessee, where the couple just watched a five-game series against Pensacola.

East’s Cunningham basks in joining Wash U women’s soccer “Before all this, I was thinking about applying to 11 different colleges, so I knew that was going to be nerve-racking. It’s a relief just being able to focus on my senior year and soccer at East.”

Had she not clicked so well with NCAA Division III Washington University in St. Louis, Cunningham, a St. Charles East senior forward, admitted she might not have pursued the sport at a different school.

“Wash U,” as it’s called colloquially, carries a history of athletic success but has long held a more formidable academic reputation.

“I knew I didn’t want to sacrifice my academics at all,” Cunningham said, “and I knew with it being D-III, it wouldn’t consume my life.”

With no school to worry about this summer, Cunningham internalized soccer again on the heels of the Saints’ ban-

Ranking second on the team in goals and first in assists with 15 apiece, she helped East to a Class 3A state runner-up finish.

During many days after the state tournament, she joined boys players in captain’s scrimmages at the East practice field, which usually entailed an hour of playing before fun competitions at the end.

“I got close with a couple of guys on the team, and I’m going to be cheering them on this fall,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham’s roots hard-

ly left her when she traveled to a camp at Baylor last month. St. Charles native Marci Jobson coaches Bears women’s soccer at the Waco, Texas, university, and welcomed Cunningham with another Saint: Jobson’s niece, Claire Rasmussen.

When some Texas-bred campers took to teasing the northerners about their accents, Jobson readily stumped for St. Charles and its soccer culture. Jobson, who, like Cunningham, wore No. 9 in high school, helped St. Charles High to state titles in 1992 and 1994, as well as a

third-place finish in 1993.

“It was all about excelling and putting in all the work,” Cunningham said.

Around the same time of the Baylor camp, Cunningham attended camp at Washington University, whose staff she first encountered and communicated with during a club showcase in St. Louis her sophomore year. Cunningham competes for Campton United in the offseason.

Washington University coach Jim Conlon observed Cunningham with a little extra attention after the Saints’ spring success and caught up

with her about the past year of schoolwork and soccer.

Neither discussion lagged.

Cunningham holds a 5.78 grade-point average on a 5.0 scale, ranking third in a class of about 600, she said.

Everything built toward Cunningham sending her high school transcripts to Wash U. Conlon and Co. liked what they saw, and Cunningham committed Thursday.

“Before all this, I was thinking about applying to 11 different colleges, so I knew that was going to be nerve-racking,” Cunningham said. “It’s a relief just being able to focus on my senior year and soccer at East.”

Cunningham said she has shown an early interest in studying medicine, developing a curiosity about orthopaedic surgery after a knee injury earlier in her prep career.

[Cyclones program director Pete Rutili] works for an advisory group [Acme World Sports], and all these [prospects] are basically in the group. Whenever we have these camps in the summer, they have a lot of downtime and they live in the area, so they come out and they give their time, which is nice. Because again, these kids really, really appreciate it. Just to see the looks on their faces with the autographs. And if ever they’re fortunate enough to make it to the NHL, they’ll never forget that night that they met them at Fox Valley.

So it’s good, it’s good.

It’s been busting here between you guys, the men’s leagues and everything. How do some of these families come to hockey, in your experience?

Obviously, the growth in the game recently in the Chicago area, a lot of that has to do with the success of the Blackhawks. They can see these guys on TV, you know.

They’ve had success. They’ve

Because at that age, they’re trying different things.

They’re trying soccer, they’re trying football, they’re trying baseball. So we see a lot of new families to the game, who their parents really don’t know a lot about hockey. It’s just with the child wanting to play hockey. So we get a lot of questions from parents that really don’t know how things work. What’s the progression model for hockey?

How’s my kid get from A to Z? The amazing thing is, once they start playing, the kid gets hooked, the parent gets hooked, you know. It’s a great game to watch. Very exciting and fast. The kids love it because of the speed. And they form friendships immediately. A lot of it’s because they’re in this dressing room, in a confined space. They get to know their teammates, you know. Their parents get to know each other. It doesn’t take long for them to fall in love with the game and have this passion for the game.

And as you say, it’s only growing.

In the next five to 10 years, there are going to be a lot of good hockey players coming out of Chicago, you know, because there’s so many new kids playing. The demand for ice is at all-time ads. So there’ll be a lot of good players coming out of this area.

Which means a demand for these kinds of camps, right?

Which communities are you drawing from most?

We’re here to service the community. We’re a community-based club. Most of our kids come from within 15 miles of the rink. We just try to have a program, a different program for every skill level.

From beginner to the most advanced in skill.

Did it do your heart good when the Jets returned to Winnipeg [for the 2011-12 season]?

Yeah, it did. It did. It’s a great hockey town, but they just didn’t have the money. … Before, all the big-market teams, they got the free agents. The small-market teams couldn’t get free agents. And then they just didn’t have the fans. There’s only 600,000 people in Winnipeg, so that means, you know, you’ve got to charge 500 bucks a ticket, and you just couldn’t do it. So [the salary cap] helped get these small-market teams back in the picture, and it became more competitive.

But, yeah, it’s great for the town and great for Winnipeg.

Of course, he has encountered the opposite through the years, with some competitors at Illinois PGA events avoiding eye contact or even mocking him.

“There are some negative people out there,” Nieto said.

“And what I’ve always said to myself is they must have something worse going on than I have to be the way they are.”

Pheasant Run, where Nieto was an assistant before becoming interim pro in August 2012 – five months before officially taking the reins – offers an enjoyable atmosphere, too.

Members often ask Nieto if he can sneak out with their groups for a few holes. Span, Nieto’s friend before they

became colleagues, always is there to offer feedback or provide a sounding board.

The days are long more often than not, sometimes approaching or exceeding 12 hours, but Nieto tends to forget since he’s at a golf course.

And, in a flashback to his ’90s dream come true, he’s teaching and coaching.

The golf gig is only fulltime in this version, not parttime.

“That’s kind of what I was aiming for when I started my career in the golf business, was to be that professional at a course,” Nieto said. “I mean, sure, there’s days it will wear on you. But – and I know it sounds cliche – I enjoy coming to work every day.

“If we have 150 rounds, that’s 150 new people. And I get to show off my operation and our golf course to a bunch of new people every day.”

What are your connections to the pro prospects who’ve been out for the skills camp?

We run these camps in the summer for a couple of reasons. One, it’s cost-effective, you know. A lot of the camps, like the university camps, they’re expensive.

This is a cost-effective camp.

It also gives an opportunity for the coaches to connect and reconnect with our players. It also … is an opportunity for players coming from outside our club that want to try our club and see what we’re about to have conversations with coaches, the hockey director, myself. It serves a lot of purposes. It’s amazing the number of people that come here.

The building’s a great facility.

The environment’s good here. … The hockey community is really a small community, and word travels real quick.

And we’re enjoying a lot of success now, and people hear about that. … We’ll probably have close to 500 members this fall, which is an all-time record for us. Mites all the way up to midgets.

Cyclones Youth Hockey Association president Mark Plantery beams about the Geneva-based organization’s steady growth. Its home base, Fox Valley Ice Arena, was recently well-populated for a Cyclones summer skills camp, and the trend will only continue when the season opens this fall.

Plantery, a Geneva resident, acknowledges things weren’t always this booming.

It’s a cyclical process, but the Cyclones certainly are on the uptick.

Catching up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley, Plantery spoke about the Cyclones, hockey’s growth in the region and his time as a defenseman for the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets in the early 1980s.

Cougars escape scare, beat Kernels in 6-5 win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Cougars exhaled with a 6-5 win at Cedar Rapids Friday, securing a win after the Kernels rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Minnesota Twins star Joe Mauer, rehabbing from a strained oblique, opened the scoring in the ninth with an RBI single.

Mitch Garver knocked a two-run double one batter later.

Cougars pitching hit two batters in the inning, but right-hander Francisco Carrillo struck out Logan Wade with men on second and third to end the game.

Fellow righties and usual late-inning options Jose Arias and Tyler Bremer were unavailable after going to the Miami Marlins organization earlier in the day when the Cubs traded for Major League right-hander Jacob Turner.

The deal left the Cougars with just 10 players from the

club’s 25-man, opening day roster.

The Cougars, a Midwest League-best 73-44, scored three times in the first inning on first baseman Jacob Rogers’ bases-clearing double.

Rogers joined Shawon Dunston Jr., Chesny Young and Danny Lockhart with two hits.

Catcher Cael Brockmeyer paced the Cougars’ 12-hit attack with a 3-for-4 day.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The legend keeps building.

On a soggy morning when Valhalla was playing long and testing nerves, Rory McIlroy passed. With flying colors.

Seeking his third consecutive tournament victory, McIlroy shot a 4-under-par 67 in the second round of the PGA. He’s at 9-under 133 and has a one-stroke lead midway through the tournament and seems to be saying, “Catch me if you can.”

“I’m very pleased,” said McIlroy, who’s coming off victories at the British Open and the Bridgestone Invitational.

“I’m in a great position going into the weekend in another major championship.”

Taking advantage of the improved afternoon conditions, Jason Day shot a 6-under 65 to move into a tie for second with Jim Furyk, who had a 3-under 68, at 8 under.

Day, who was bothered by a thumb injury earlier this year, eagled the split-fairway seventh hole and birdied his final two holes.

“I think we got a little lucky on the draw, teeing off in the afternoon [Friday],” Day said.

“We didn’t get as much rain.

The guys in the morning, it was pouring pretty hard. But, hey, I played great.”

Two shots behind McIlroy are first-round co-leader Ryan Palmer, who has three

top-five finishes this year; Rickie Fowler, who posted top-fives in each of the first three majors of 2014; and Mikko Ilonen.

“Rory is the guy to beat,” said Palmer, who was pleased to shoot a 1-under 70 in the wet conditions early. “I’ll be honest with you.”

Fowler more than offset three bogeys with eight birdies to shoot a 5-under 66.

After touring Valhalla with McIlroy the last two days, U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer was even more blunt than Palmer.

“It’s very difficult to beat him,” said Kaymer, who missed the cut after shooting a 3-over 74. “You just have to respect how good he plays.

There’s nothing wrong with his game. Putting. Chipping.

Bunkers. Whatever it is. And he hits it probably 20 or 25 yards longer than anyone else. He’s definitely the best player in the world.”

The way Tiger Woods stalked a golf course in his prime was one thing. The thought of McIlroy, 25, being an intimidator is another.

“I think I’ve had to learn to be a good front-runner,” said Mcllroy, a three-time major champion. “If I’m two ahead going into the weekend here, I’m going to try to get three ahead. If I’m three ahead, I’m going to try to get four ahead.

I’m just going to try to keep the pedal down and get as many as possible.”

Mom explores Kane County’s farm-fresh fare

I sucked down a kale smoothie in the car last Saturday morning, on my way to the farm to pick up my second box of veggies. I felt like I was cramming for a test. I was determined that we’d eat as much of the first box of our CSA (community supported agriculture) share as possible before picking up another, but we fell kind of short.

We’re hardly salad newbies, but I admit, my family and I could certainly stand to eat a little more roughage and a little less “pirate booty.” Know what I mean? Learning how to incorporate and keep up with the variety and generous volume of beautiful and fragrant produce (Thai basil, anyone?) that a CSA share affords (way cheaper than buying each veggie a la carte, people) may be a challenge at first, but I’m ripe for the task.

Indeed, as I pulled into the driveway at Rustic Road Farm in Elburn I asked Holly if I had any kale bits between my teeth. She just rolled her eyes. I may be hopeless, but I’m trying.

“You’re making me eat my veggies,” I said to Luis Bernard, when we checked in at the farm stand in the barn.

“That’s what we want!” said Bernard, co-owner of the farm.

I’ll say. There’s stuff in these boxes I’ve never seen before, that I barely know what to do with – it’s like a treasure-hunt and Christmas Day all at once – but Bernard and his partner and co-owner, executive chef Marc Bernard haven’t left me stranded.

I bought a share (a 10-week membership or subscription) two weeks ago, and along with a haul of seasonal vegetables, each week they also furnish me with recipes, which serve as helpful clues about what to do with it all.

If I can’t figure out what something is (pathetic, right?), I just consult the approximate harvest schedule they provided when I first signed up, and, by process of elimination, I can usually sort it out. But there’s an easier way!

In the meantime, I’d better start sharing some of the bounty with my neighbors. If you want to sample some of Rustic Road’s GMO and pesticide-free fare (they proudly report on their Facebook page that “you’ll never see a chemical or drug on this farm”), but don’t feel like indulging in the short drive out to Brundige Road in Elburn on Saturdays (the farm stand is open seasonally from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., when you and your kids can also buy healthy, farm-fresh eggs and meats and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the 5-acre farm to visit the chickens, pigs, and goats – including “Rusty,” who seems to appreciate a good scratch between his horns), check out their yummy produce at Batavia’s Farmers’ Market (on Saturdays). Look them up today, in fact, when you stop by the seventh annual “Green Fair on the Fox” in Batavia.

The Green Fair (formerly known as the “Green Walk”), slated to take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Batavia Riverwalk, indoor at City Hall and at the Farmer’s Market on River Street, reportedly is bigger than ever before and will include all sorts of interesting vendors of wholesome and natural goods, services and activities.

Before I hit that, though, we’re heading back out to the farm to get our next box of goodies. I hear there’s GMO-free corn in the offing, this week.

On my morning walk, I often pass an area that is full of native plants.

I am pleased to say there seems to be an abundance of milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) growing among the other plants: Queen Anne’s lace, Black-eyed Susan, pokeweed, common mullein and others.

The common milkweed plant stands tall and proud with its long, broad leaves and pinkish-purple clusters of flowers that grow along the stem.

Some gardeners do not welcome this plant as it can be invasive, but many gardeners are learning the importance of this plant. Monarch butterflies, milk-

Many other types of insects also use this plant as a primary source of food including honey bees, black swallowtails, ruby-throated hummingbirds and many others.

While some insects are dining on this plant, others find it to be a source of shelter.

Close inspection might find goldenrod spiders, American dog ticks, American goldfinches and other happy nesters.

Yellow jackets tend to eat flies and bees that often get caught in the flowers.

When broken, this plant oozes a milky sap – cardiac glycosides – that is poisonous.

Thus, you should not eat this plant.

When the monarch caterpillar munches on the leaves of the milkweed, this poison enters its body and then protects the caterpillar from predators. How cool is that?

Since the nectar and pollen of the milkweed does not have this poison within, it is safe for visiting moths, butterflies, bees and all other insects that come to call!

At some point you will see large, green pods on the milkweed plant. In time, these pods will dry and turn brown.

The finale is when the pods burst open and tiny little seeds are dispersed by the wind and located to new homes to grow and thrive for the next season.

Once the pods burst open, it is a good time to visit the plant and collect some seed for your own garden. The seed can, and should, be planted in the fall ... just like Mother Nature does.

Plant seeds about a quarter-inch deep.

It is a good idea to mark where you sow the seed in order to identify it next spring. You can control milkweed in your home garden by removing the seed pods before they burst open.

We can all encourage the increase of milkweed in our environment by planting seeds and limiting the use of herbicides and pesticides.

Our bees and butterflies are counting on us to do the right thing!

Author Lois Lowry talks about ‘The Giver’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now It’s no surprise that Lois Lowry is such a prolific writer. The longtime Cambridge, Massachusetts, resident recalls spending her childhood as a voracious reader of all kinds of books, especially adult books that had young protagonists.

She read and loved “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” when she was 10, and fell under the spell of “The Catcher in the Rye” not long after.

Lowry, a chipper 77, crossed the river from Cambridge to Boston last week to talk about her young adult novel “The Giver,” a coming-of-age tale set in a dystopian future (written in 1993, well before the fad of “The Hunger Games,” etc.).

Though the Newbery Medal-winning book’s film rights were purchased by Jeff Bridges almost two decades ago, it’s taken all of these years to make it to the screen. The irony is that Bridges wanted his father Lloyd to play the titular old man, but so much time has gone by, he’s doing it himself.

Ed Symkus: You were writing poems and short stories for adults when you started out.

What got you into writing for younger readers?

Lois Lowry: I published a short story in a magazine. It was a story for adults, but it was seen through the eyes of a child.

A children’s book editor at Houghton Mifflin read it, got in touch with me, and asked if I would consider writing a book for young people. It never occurred to me, which amazes me now because I had four kids at the time, why I never thought of witting for kids.

So, I sat down immediately and began doing it. They didn’t promise to publish what I wrote, but to have a publisher at the other end, waiting for it, was a jump start.

The book was “A Summer to Die,” and they did publish it and it won a big international award. It coincided with the time my marriage was ending, and I was going to have to – oh, my goodness!

– make a living for the first time, and it occurred to me maybe that’s how I could do it.

Symkus: Some of the themes in “The Giver,” such as rebelling against conformity, have caused controversy among the conservative element in our society.

Lowry: Yeah, it was removed from the schools in the town of Holland, Michigan, and a town in Colorado. I forgot the name of that one. It’s not true any longer, but when that was happening so much, most often there would be a challenge, then there would be a process, and then there

But in a couple of places it was withdrawn. Beats me why. I think the reason it’s not being challenged any longer is because now that the young adult category has become so huge, there are a lot of so-called young adult books that are sexually explicit and that have a lot of violence. If the people who challenge books want something to challenge, there’s better stuff out there for their purposes.

Symkus: Do you find yourself surprised at insights that people get out of your books, things that you hadn’t even intended?

Lowry: Oh, yes. Recently I’ve gotten questions about the theological implications of the apple, the “Adam and Eve metaphor.”

And I go, “What? I didn’t put that in there, folks.”

It’s interesting that people take out of what they’re reading what works for them.

Symkus: There have been many attempts at writing a script of “The Giver” over the years.

Was the initial one very different from the one that became the film, and did you work on any of them?

Lowry: Bob Weide wrote a screenplay in 1996. His was the earliest. There were four or five intervening ones, and Mike Mitnick wrote the last one. I didn’t work with either of them, but I was privy to

both of their scripts.

They emailed me the final screenplay, and asked me to go through it and make any notes, so I did. They took some of my advice and ignored, as they have every right to, some of my other advice. But the director emailed me continuously during the filming and the pre-production with little questions like what do you want the boy’s bedroom to look like, how would it be furnished?

Symkus: The youngest kids in the book have stuffed animals that you term “comfort objects.”

Did you have a comfort object?

Lowry: Oh, I did. Pinky. [She smiles] When I was 4, we went to visit my grandparents, and when we came back home, my mother said that Pinky had gotten left behind at Grandma’s house. Pinky was a doll that was very faded and disgusting.

Symkus: What are you reading these days?

Lowry: I have just finished reading a biography of the Romanov sisters, the daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra.

I’m a history buff, but I like everything.

I’m reading an awful lot of Scandinavian mysteries lately. Go figure.

Symkus: Are you working hard on your next book?

Lowry: No, I’ve had to take the summer off from writing because I’ve been so busy with the movie stuff. But I’m eager to get back to it.

Because your parents have been doing this on a regular basis, it qualifies as verbal/emotional abuse. Be glad you now recognize it, because their lack of control isn’t normal.

Their anger and frustration may have nothing to do with you and your siblings. The problem

Neuropathic pain has multiple treatment options Dear Doctor K: I suffer from what my doctor calls “chronic neuropathic pain.” What are my treatment options?

Dear Reader: There are two main types of pain. Nociceptive pain results from an injury to tissues outside your nervous system. Burns, sprains and broken bones are all examples of nociceptive pain. Tiny nerve fibers are always present in tissues.

When the tissue gets injured, the nerve fibers detect it. The signal they send the brain is nociceptive pain. The signal says to the brain: “Do something to avoid further injury!”

Neuropathic (nerve) pain is the second type of pain. That’s the pain your doctor has diagnosed. It results from injury to or malfunction of the nerves themselves.

This causes abnormal processing of pain signals and sensations.

As a result, the nerve that was the mere messenger of pain now becomes a source of pain.

Neuropathic pain can result from diseases or conditions as varied as diabetes, shingles, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury or stroke. The pain may be felt as a burning or shooting pain, or you may have an unpleasant sensation of pins and needles. The pain may move out from one part of

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the body and spread to adjacent areas. It can be chronic and difficult to manage.

You have likely already tried conventional over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve).

These medicines work a lot better for nociceptive pain than for neuropathic (nerve) pain.

I think there is little evidence that prescription pain medicines – particularly the potent opioid medicines – are effective for neuropathic pain. Since they are addicting and can cause serious side effects, they should never be continued unless it is clear they are relieving suffering.

For neuropathic pain, other types of drugs (all requiring prescriptions) can be more effective than traditional pain medicines.

Adding one of these following types of drugs won’t completely control your nerve pain, but it may help: • Anticonvulsants. These anti-seizure medications also help to blunt pain signals in the nerves.

The most commonly used for

nerve pain are gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica).

They take four to six weeks for the full effect to kick in.

• Antidepressants. Certain types of antidepressants can also help to control nerve pain: a. Tricyclic antidepressants.

These drugs have the strongest evidence backing their ability to manage nerve pain. b. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

These drugs are prescribed at lower doses for pain than they are for depression. SNRIs have fewer side effects than tricyclics, but they may be less effective in treating neuropathic pain. c. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs are commonly prescribed for depression. Some doctors may try these for treating neuropathic pain, too. In my opinion, the evidence that they are effective for neuropathic pain is mixed.

When I was in medical school, we had few effective treatments for neuropathic pain. While we still need better treatments, we’ve made real progress.

All I’m asking for is an apple Dr. Wallace: My parents always prepare healthy meals. We eat three well-balanced meals daily, but I’m not allowed to eat any snacks even when I tell Mom that I’m starving. They tell me that it is only in my mind and eventually I will get over it. What a simple way to sum up baseball. In bridge, timing can also be vital. In today’s deal, how should South time the play to make four hearts after West leads the spade queen? Let’s assume that declarer ducks (loses) the first trick and takes the second with dummy’s ace.

That South hand is worth more than 18 points because of all those aces and kings.

South needs to assume that the trumps are breaking 3-2; otherwise, the contract has no chance. But even then, declarer still has four potential losers: one spade, one heart and two diamonds. The major-suit losers are unavoidable. If the missing diamonds are 3-3, there won’t be a problem. If, though, they are the more likely 4-2, declarer will have to ruff a diamond in the dummy.

Suppose South cashes his top trumps, then plays three rounds of diamonds. West wins the third diamond, cashes his heart jack, and takes the diamond queen for down one.

If instead South immediately plays three rounds of diamonds, West wins and plays a fourth diamond, which promotes a second trump trick for the defense.

The correct timing is not obvious. South must duck the first round of diamonds. Probably East will win and play another spade. South ruffs, draws two rounds of trumps, then reverts to diamonds. Even if a defender could ruff a high diamond, the contract would still be safe.
