Interns recap their experience at Chronicle School days are once again approaching, and that signals the end of some internships at the Kane County Chronicle.

Madeline Happold, Anna Dutton, Nate Wendt and Katie Kull all have recently concluded their internships.

Each made a positive impact in the Chronicle newsroom this summer. And it sounds like the internships were rewarding experiences for the interns, as well.

Noting that a Chronicle internship allowed her to gain knowledge she could never learn in a classroom, Anna wrote: “Internships allow students like me ... to test drive a career before completing [a] degree.”

And reflecting on his time at the newspaper,

Nate said his only suggestion about the internship program at the Chronicle “is that the place never changes.”

“I’ve gained more indepth knowledge of how newspapers work, refining photo-taking and photo-editing skills, writing and editing skills, and design,” he said. “ ... My fellow interns were the best people I could have asked to work [with].

They are all truly talented, and I can’t wait to see how they come along with their futures. They and the staff are what have made this internship an unforgettable experience. I’ll sincerely miss everyone in the office and hope that we can stay in touch every now and then.”

Meanwhile, Katie said she will carry the lessons she has learned over the summer back to Mizzou,

where she attends college.

One of those lessons?

“Laugh. A lot,” Katie wrote. “Sometimes sitting in the newsroom and staring at a screen all day is exhausting. Take a minute to talk to the reporters, ask them what they’re working on, volunteer to go get blotter and, most importantly, don’t take yourself too seriously because you’ll have much more fun that way.”

The buzz about wool-carder bees

I got quite the buzz while working in the garden the other day.

No, I’m not growing anything illegal. And there weren’t any adult beverages involved either. I suppose to a certain extent I did experience a natural high – the kind you get from harvesting the fruits of your labor. But because none of my vegetables got into the ground until mid-June, and the neighborhood bunnies have already helped themselves to the beets and lettuce, my “haul” that day consisted of one cucumber and two tiny peppers.

Clearly, I’m talking about another kind of buzz. Specifically that of Anthidium manicatum, the European wool-carder bee. If you have access to any outdoor plants with fuzzy leaves, you probably know exactly the kind of buzz I’m talking about – a continuous droning so loud, I thought for sure it was coming from a swarm of insects instead of just one.

When I located the source of the sound, I had to look again to figure out just what I was seeing. At first glance, this bee moves and looks like a type of hover fly – insects with promi-

Bees, and virtually all other winged insects, for that matter, have two pairs of wings. When I looked closely at this loud individual who’d joined me in my garden reverie, I definitely saw four wings total.

Hmm. I tried to focus on spreading the compost I’d collected, but instead kept finding myself drawn to this curious newcomer. It would buzz around the lambs’ ears (Stachys byzantina), land, then buzz around some more. As I watched, I noticed a pattern emerging.

What the ...?

I eventually abandoned my trowel and bucket completely, and plopped down to watch the show. I soon noticed there were a few other bees, also on the lambs’ ears, that were allowed to stay. They were smaller than the big, noisy guy, and they

seemed absorbed in their work of visiting the Stachys flowers.

When I felt like I’d seen enough, I pulled out my phone and clicked into my favorite online field guide, www.

BugGuide.net. A few more taps, and I’d found the answer I was looking for.

As their name indicates, European wool-carder bees are

not native to the United States.

Sources differ on how the introduction was made, but it likely was accidental and appears to have occurred in the 1960s, probably in New York state.

Like other wool-carder bees – and we do have several species that are native to North America – the European wool-carders belong to the family of bees known as leaf-cutters.

However, instead of chewing and removing (“cutting”) sections of leaf, female wool-carders scrape off, or “card,” the downy fuzz, or “wool” that is present on certain types of plants. This soft material is then used to line the cells of their nests, which typically are located in crevices in wood.

While the females busy themselves with homemaking, the males – like the big, loud guy I saw and heard – aggressively protect the area by attacking anything that

Bob and Louise Overheidt of Geneva will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with a lunch with family and friends, August 15, 2015, at Riverside Restaurant Geneva, Illinois. It will be hosted by Bob and Louise Overheidt. Louise Schliemann married Bob Overheidt, August 19, 1950, at Bethany Reformed Church. They first lived in Chicago. Bob was employed by Miner Enterprises in Geneva, as a Chief Draftsman.

He retired April 30,1992. The couple enjoys attending the First Baptist Church of Geneva. They love having family and friends visit. They like to watch sports: the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Bulls and the Ohio State Buckeyes football. Their youngest granddaughter fills their lives with joy when she comes to their home to visit and play. They keep in touch with family who live out of town through their ipad. They send lots of notes and pictures so that everyone can stay in touch! COVER STORY CLASSICS ON DISPLAY AT LOCAL CAR SHOWS Cars’ owners, fans flock to events in Geneva, St. Charles

By MITCH CHAMBERLAIN mchamberlain@shawmedia.com When participants at the Geneva Classic Car Show brought their vehicles to the show July 23, they likely never expected to see a machine with 1 horsepower, but David Snelling had other plans.

Snelling always has brought a vehicle whenever he goes to a car show, such as the Geneva Classic Car Show, but his children had no prize to show off – until now.

One year ago, Snelling decided to create what his wife had deemed the “rug-rat rod.”

Comprised of two connected child-sized wagons, the front wagon is powered by a 1-horsepower washing machine engine with a tractor transmission; the wagon behind it acts as a trailer, he said.

Snelling said he built it because “you gotta raise the next generation right, so might as well build them a hot rod.”

He was among several other attendees at the Geneva Classic Car Show, hosted by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce on Thursday evenings through Aug. 27. Further north, the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce hosts its own car show, called Cruise Nites, on Tuesday evenings through Aug. 25.

wheels for both his wagons for the “rug-rat rod” at a go-kart shop in Carpentersville.

Snelling said, it’s slow enough to not have seat belts, but Snelling isn’t sure how fast it actually can go. Snelling said the potential top speed is between 10 to 15 mph.

The “rug-rat rod” features functioning headlights, taillights and air pistons that can raise and lower both of the wagons, Snelling said.

He said he was able to build the one-of-a-kind hot rod thanks to his career as a master buildsmith and hand engraver at a diamond center.

“I’ve been building since I was a little kid. And think about it – a jeweler is just basically a smaller version of a mechanic,” Snelling said.

All of these features and the machine itself helped the “rug-rat rod” win the people’s choice award at the Geneva Classic Car Show on July 23.

While the “rug-rat rod” likely was the newest machine at the car show, Jim Jones’ 1914 Ford Model T Speedster was one of the oldest cars there.

Jones, a Geneva resident, decided he wanted to get a Model T Speedster when: “A friend of my younger son’s came over with a friend of his who had a Model T dirt racer, and I thought it was just the neatest thing I had ever seen, and I got talking to his father.

After looking at that Model T for a long time, Jones made up his mind – he had to buy one. Nine months later, in 2004, he found a Model T Speedster in Wisconsin and bought it.

While common sense could say this 100-year-old vehicle is just a show car, in reality this car was built for racing, and to this day it still races.

Jones said he recently went to the Galena Races with his Model T Speedster and planned to go to the Michigan Races in the near future.

“This was used for cross-country racing, and [during] those races they ran 24 hours a day,” Snelling said.

Parts for the Model T Speedster are easy to come by because “Ford made 15 million of these types of cars, so you can buy parts brand new that were manufactured in 1914, in the original box,” Jones said.

“So you can actually buy the whole thing of parts and put it together.”

Jones brought his Model T Speedster to the Geneva Classic Car Show last year, and he is happy to bring it back this year, he said. Jones likes how the Geneva Classic Car Show is informal and how he can talk

to everyone there.

“You can talk to the people who restored them and find out what they are about,” Jones said. “To me, the fun thing about these cars is how there are builds and engineering that went into them.”

In regards to the Geneva Classic Car Show, Snelling said he liked “the whole thing” because the attendees are nice and “whatever you show up with, you’re cool.”

This is one of the more popular years for the Geneva Classic Car Show. According to Geneva Chamber of Commerce Membership Director Judy Carroll, the Geneva show was started 20 years ago with the intention to bring more people to downtown Geneva in the evenings.

The most recent addition to the Geneva show that started last year is a movie night, an event featuring a movie chosen by the attendees. This year’s movie is “Thunder Road,” with a drive-in movie set-up, and will be shown Aug. 27.

The Geneva Classic Car Show comes to a close with the movie night. Locals also can attend Cruise Nites in downtown St. Charles.

They use their considerable bulk (male wool carders are about the size of bumble bees; females are more honey bee-sized) to butt away any perceived threats, including beetles, butterflies and other bees. Although they have no stingers, these big males do have several spiny projections near the rear of their abdomen they can use if they feel additional force is necessary.

As an introduced species, the European wool carders naturally inspire concern. Their native checks and balances do not exist here in the States, and their tendency to bash intruding pollinators makes them seem brutish and bully like.

But, so far anyway, their impacts seem minimal. While male European wool-carders have been observed killing honey bees – which also are European in origin – they do not

singly target this species and have not had any significant impact on its population.

Another helpful trait is their penchant for host plants from their homeland – basically, the many non-native species we grow in our flower gardens: lamb’s ear, mints and even mullein. By contrast, our native wool-carder bees tend to visit plants indigenous to the U.S. If you, like me, plan on spending some time outdoors this weekend, and happen to know where some fuzzy-leaved plants grow, give them a look – and a listen. Drink in all the sights and sounds, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be lucky enough to get buzzed ... by a wool-carder bee.

NORTH AURORA – Isabel Busch, 3, of Aurora waved with excitement as a line of fire engines drove past her Friday night, their sirens blaring.

The fire engines were part of the emergency vehicle lights and sirens parade, which helped kick off the village’s annual festival, North Aurora Days. The festival will continue through Sunday.

James Busch and his wife, Adriana, brought their daughters, Isabel and Annabel, 1, to the parade. This was the first time the family had attended North Aurora Days.

“I thought the parade was great,” James Busch said. “It was neat to see the vintage vehicles and it was cool to see the kids get excited about it.”

SOUTH ELGIN – Anderson Animal Shelter has teamed with the South Elgin Petco store and the Petco Foundation for a mega adoption event, featuring more than 75 adoptable dogs and puppies of all breeds. St. Charles resident Jerry Fitzpatrick has brought his 1977 Dodge Challenger 300 to Cruise Nites three times. When the engine came out of the factory, it had 230 horsepower, but Fitzpatrick decided to build on it and now he said his Challenger has more than 300 horsepower.

Fitzpatrick said his car originally was a hemi orange color in 1977 when he bought the car shortly after high school, and in 1983 he painted it slate gray.

The Challenger remained slate gray until the winter of 2014, when Fitzpatrick decided to paint the car “plum crazy.”

While Fitzpatrick kept the car he bought after high school, fellow St. Charles resident Darin Tobolski sold his car from high school but had always regretted it.

“If I ever found another one, like the one I had in high school, I’d buy it,” Tobolski said.

In 2014, Tobolski found a 1972 Ford Grand Torino for sale on Craigslist and bought it.

14 St. Charles aldermen vote, 7-3, for drive-thru alcohol sales

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles businesses for the first time can offer drive-thru alcohol sales, thanks to a St. Charles City Council decision on Monday.

The St. Charles City Council voted, 7-3, during its regular meeting in favor of an ordinance permitting the drive-thru sales. Aldermen Rita Payleitner of Ward 2, Jo Krieger of Ward 4 and Maureen Lewis of Ward 5 voted against the motion.

The vote allows the roughly 21 A-1 liquor license holders for packaged liquor in St. Charles to sell alcohol through a drive-thru at their businesses.

Lundeen’s Discount Liquor operators David and Julie Lundeen first approached the city in 2013 to permit drive-thru sales at a to-bebuilt drive-thru window at their express location, 1315 W. Main St., St. Charles.

“We are grateful that the council was forward thinking enough to trust us that this business model does work,” Julie Lundeen said Friday.

“The due diligence on our end to hold a liquor license is the same whether (patrons are) walking in or going through the drive-thru.”

Lundeen’s Sycamore location has had a drive-thru since 2005, Julie Lundeen said.

Payleitner on Monday said the ordinance for the drive-thru sales “lacked teeth” and moved to table it. Krieger and Lewis voted with Payleitner in favor of tabling the ordinance, but they were denied

by the other seven aldermen who later voted in favor of the ordinance at the meeting.

St. Charles resident Brian LaVolpe at Monday’s meeting questioned how Lundeen’s store employees would be able to check the ages of everyone in a vehicle at a drive-thru for alcohol.

“The people in my neighborhood are not happy about it,” LaVolpe said.

Rogina said that he was impressed with the Lundeens’ presentation and that there are more safeguards built into having a drive-thru with alcohol sales versus a regular store.

“I do believe ordinances like this to sell products that are legal are important for those elderly and disabled,” Rogina said.

Christopher Mentenick, 26, of the 100 block of South 18th Street, St. Charles, was charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest. As of Friday afternoon, he remained in custody in the Kane County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

Geneva police responded at 4:54 a.m. Monday to the 2600 block of Blackman Drive for a report of a burglary in

progress, according to a Geneva police report. A woman told police that she confronted a man later Christopher identified as Mentenick Mentenick, who was inside her father’s vehicle, the report indicated.

The man fled the scene, and a North Aurora police department K-9 unit assisted in tracking Mentenick, who was discovered hiding in the brush near the victim’s address, according to police. He then led Geneva police on a foot chase,

ST. CHARLES – Scott Schmaren was almost as wide as he was tall when he ate an entire bottle of sleeping pills, sat in his favorite chair and waited to die.

He woke up, what he imagined was hours later, as the sun slipped through his living room window. Although Schmaren can’t describe the overwhelming serenity he felt in words, he said he knew he was alive for a reason.

“So I got out of my chair,” he said.

Schmaren has come a long way from Niles, where he was known as the “fat kid Scott of the neigh- Schmaren borhood,” he said. In response to constant bullying and ridicule, he said he “just kept eating.”

After his incident and during the course of a few years, Schmaren shed pounds and reached his first milestone of “not being recognized as the fat guy when [he] went out in public,” he said.

Through a daily routine and the study of hypnosis, meditation, creative visualization and other modalities, Schmaren said he realized the power of the subconscious mind. He said once his perception of himself changed, he was able to lose weight and keep it off.

As he kept losing weight, Schmaren said he got to have many of the experiences he had missed while growing up – riding roller coasters at Six Flags or flying in an airplane without having to ask for a seatbelt extension. He found a way to achieve a different goal.

“Inside of a week of doing all the things he was telling me to do, I was already an IFBB pro, and I had already won the show. It was just a matter of showing up, so I could hurry up and get my award,” Anderson said.

And she did. On July 17, 2013, Anderson went to a professional bodybuilding competition in Pittsburgh where she won her 55-plus age group and the two age groups below her, Schmaren said.

Schmaren’s clients are not limited to people trying to lose weight.

After his tactics with his patented “Mind Performance Training” technique gained traction, his business started to expand and help individuals and organizations perform better. And he’s even helped chemo patients hoping to recover from radiation, he said.

Every client’s program

is different, he said – sometimes he’s a keynote speaker, other times he will prepare a tape for hypnosis and sometimes he needs to give a follow-up.

He has co-authored a book called “Stepping Stones to Success” with three others.

He is working on another book.

But the most gratifying part, he said, is seeing people make change, sometimes in unexpected ways.

A year and a half ago, Anderson opened a gym in St. Charles called Competitor’s Edge. As she expands her business for the second time and looks to build another location, Anderson said she carries the lessons she learned from Schmaren with her.

“It actually opened up a completely different way of training [my athletes] and a completely different way of motivating people,” she said. “… Talking to them about being positive and only thinking about the outcome and how it [will] affect them.

If you think only positive things, those positive things are what’s going to happen to you.”

Nine gifted politicians, but one broken party

The Republican Party – partially, but not entirely, thanks to Donald Trump – on Thursday night gave us perhaps the most entertaining debate in presidential primary history. And it also showcased a field of talented politicians. But the problem is that everything was within a framework of a still-broken party.

By the end of the night, all nine of the non-Trumps demonstrated why they belonged in the main event. Each of them has solid skills for this kind of thing. To my eyes, Marco Rubio probably had the best night of the group (and many on Twitter seemed to agree), but everyone had at least a couple of moments to shine. It’s impressive: This style of debating, under these conditions, is not as easy as several of them made it look. Only Mike Huckabee had debated at this level before. Rand Paul, in particular, has only run for office once before, but he was quite strong throughout. Most candidates (including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, to name a few) took several tries to get up to speed when they began running for president. And at least a few of the GOP candidates (John Kasich, Jeb Bush, Rubio) have taken governing seriously; they’re not just showhorses. None of this takes away from the obvious fact that the party is still a mess. We had nothing resembling a real agenda for governing from anyone on the podium. Years after Obamacare passed, none of them can even pretend to have a health care policy. The economic plans that they want to talk about are mostly bromides and cliches. On foreign policy it’s braggadocio along with contempt for Obama. Yes, there were a few exceptions, from some candidates on some specific issues (such as Bush on immigration, Paul on civil liberties, Rubio on a few things). And, no, I don’t necessarily expect extensive details in a debate format. But Republicans have shown no signs at all that they are close to being able to succeed at governing. Being a good politician in the Republican Party these days means displaying skills to excite the excitable. It also means navigating around the constantly changing bogeymen conjured up by the conservative marketplace. This condition tests those who have been in office more than a few years, because what was orthodox conservatism one day may have turned into squish sellout RINOism the next. That’s unlikely to cost Republicans the presidential election, just as it hasn’t cost them in midterm elections. It does leave them unprepared to fight off a Donald Trump (or, for that matter, a Ben Carson or a Carly Fiorina, both of whom are about as qualified for the office as he is). After all, he’s only an exaggerated version of what their real politicians sound like. But their most insurmountable problem is not from celebrity outsiders. As long as they’re a post-policy party, Republicans are going to find governing an impossible challenge.

Discussing domestic violence Even though domestic violence in America is incredibly widespread, it remains a taboo topic in our society.

What happens in the home is considered private – a family matter that is resistant to outside interference. But just because violent behavior may occur behind closed doors doesn’t mean discussions about such matters have to stay there. A statistic published in a Huffington Post article last year painted a rather compelling picture of the issue by comparing the number of lives lost in war to lives lost to domestic violence: “The number of American troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2012 was 6,488. The number of American women who were murdered by current or ex male partners during that time was 11,766.”

Spurring the domestic violence dialogue is the recent outcome of the Shadwick King murder trial, which recently resulted in a 30-year jail sen-

tence for the Geneva resident.

King, 48, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Kathleen, 32.

Regarding the sentencing, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated, “[Shadwick] King committed the ultimate act of domestic violence in a fit of jealousy and rage,” adding that though justice was served with a “suitable sentencing,” it was incomparable to the burden being carried by the Kings’ three young sons, who have lost a mother and a father.

One of Kathleen King’s aunts said in a victim impact statement that domestic violence had touched her family several times, but that this particular incident was the first that resulted in death.

While a prison sentence may – or may not – have momentarily set the minds of Kathleen King’s friends and family at ease, the repercussions of the event will continue to create waves in the lives of her loved ones for years to

come.

Victims of intimate partner violence – a serious, preventable, public health problem that affects millions of Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – can arm themselves with information in case of an emergency.

Some safety tips offered

by Illinois.gov – for when a situation escalates – include moving away from the kitchen, garage or bathroom, where there may be sharp objects; planning an escape route that includes a door or window for a quick and safe exit; and always making sure weapons are secure and aren’t loaded.

The hope is that those facing domestic violence can seek help before it’s too late.

Help is available by calling the Domestic Violence Helpline at 877-863-6338. The hotline is toll-free, confidential, multilingual and open 24 hours a day.

But help is much more likely to come to those who speak.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

My sister recently passed, and her favorite pizza was always Pal Joey’s. I wanted to thank Pal Joey’s in Batavia, not only for donating the food for her memorial, but also coming and setting it up.

Not a feeding trough

I think nice restaurants, other than sports bars and grills, should have a minimum dress code for their customers. For example, all shirts must have sleeves and a collar. Slacks or trousers must be worn. No shorts allowed. No shower shoes, just regular shoes. And male customers should also remove their hats when inside. Ladies, no shorts, just pants or slacks and a modest blouse. If this ever happens, then I will feel that I am actually going to a nice restaurant and not a feeding trough.

Where’s the hope?

I’m responding to “His senseless deal” in the Sound Off. People wanted hope and change.

Well, they got the change. The hope is that in 2016, a Republican gets in.

Illinois cannot afford it

The KCC is correct in requesting the Illinois Legislature not [to] override Gov. Rauner’s veto ... [regarding] the state’s labor contracts. Illinois is broke and has been controlled by the Democrats for 20 years. Labor unions support the Democratic Party, and House Speaker Madigan controls the Democratic Party in Illinois. How does anybody in Illinois figure that the arbitrator will not be influenced by the Democratic Party, labor unions and House Speaker Madigan?

Rauner is correct; Illinois cannot afford what the unions want.

It can happen to you

I have a question: I had a pedicure done, and I got an infection in my toes that I’ve seen a foot doctor on. I thought all pedicure places have to be trained, have a license. I guess not. The person that worked on my feet was trained by an aunt. He wasn’t licensed, and I went once and I’ll never go again. Anybody that goes for pedicures or manicures, it can happen to you, and the bills for a foot doctor are expensive. Yes, I have health insurance, but I have pain in some of the toes that I’ve never had before.

So, my question is: I thought the people that do the pedicures have to be licensed. Somebody told me only the store has to be licensed, not the people who work there.

Are we to ignore that?

If the left is good at anything, it’s painting with a very broad brush and providing no data to back up what they say. For instance, a recent entry in Sound Off spoke about the Iran deal and wondered why the Republicans are against it. Said he/she: “Oh wait, it’s because the black guy is the president.” I hear this sort of comment so often from the left that I can’t help but wonder if it isn’t officially a part of their political M.O., that is, use race whenever and however, with or without evidence. Nonetheless, I might afford some credibility to this opinion if this current president stuck to the Constitution,

as he swore to do, but sadly, it turns out that he has walked all over that document at least as much as any other president, and perhaps even more than any other. Isn’t that enough for any American to be displeased with him and what he’s doing, no matter his race? Or are we to ignore that specifically because, as you say, “The black guy is the president”?

History repeating itself

In response to all the people who voted for someone just because of the color of their skin and not the content of their character, you had 40 years of real-life experience added to your 1960s upbringing that you thought would save the world.

How’s that going? I see history repeating itself. And we thought ’Nam was bad. Through sanctions, we had Iran down on one knee. Now it seems we have squandered that opportunity.

So, with your vast experience and cumulative wisdom, you’ve come to the conclusion that a singular new source out of how many grains of sand on the free speech beach of life is somehow the cause of all problems. The First Amendment was created for the purpose of dissent and not to be a cog in your wheel of you getting everything your way.

You should welcome stimulating thought of any kind, no matter how deep or how shallow. And if you think you’re worth $15 an hour just to do wax on and wax off on a McDonald’s table, your arrogance precedes you. You must be a baby boomer.

Golfers shine at third-oldest amateur tournament

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Accepting applause from the gallery gathered around Rich Harvest Farms’ 18th green on Friday, Gavin Hall retrieved his ball from the cup and began walking with his putter.

No caddie was in sight.

Hall, a Texas junior, carried his own bag at the Western Amateur, thank you very much.

“It’s OK,” he grinned. “I’m used to it.”

Not far from where Hall stood after earning a firstround match play victory, 1-up against UCLA senior Jonathan Garrick, a wouldbe looper stood in awe. To be sure, Aurora Christian ju-

nior Brett Seward mirrored the sentiment of many in the crowd.

It’s tough to beat watching some of the world’s up and coming golfers free of charge on a picturesque day.

“Its pretty valuable,” Seward said. “I’m looking to play at the collegiate level, and seeing these guys play and seeing the level they’re at, it’s very important to watch, I think.”

Whether an onlooker caddied at RHF as Seward does or simply was around for a joy walk, the experience offered the opportunity to do most everything in step with the golfers apart from play the ball as it lies.

Friday’s two match play rounds – on the heels of 72

holes of stroke play earlier this week – whittled the field that started at 156 to today’s final eight.

Past champions in the world’s third-oldest amateur golf tournament include Phil Mickelson (1991) and Tiger Woods (1994). Still, those who fell short in this week’s 113th edition of the Western Amateur, which began with athletes from 19 countries, aspire to careers that are equally memorable and long-lasting.

“U.S. (Amateur) next week and then play next year and then turn pro after my fourth year of college,” said Garrick, who also qualified for the Western Amateur’s sweet 16 in 2013.

Garrick represents one end of the spectrum for the field’s

final combatants. On the other side sits Australian teenager Ryan Ruffels, 17, who still has his final year of high school ahead of him.

Ruffels couldn’t quite author as extensive a run as he would have liked before bowing out to stroke play medalist and Alabama standout Robby Shelton in the second round of match play. He wouldn’t trade the experience, however, which included having countryman Charlie Cameron, a Northern Illinois transfer, on his bag.

“We’re all pretty close from Australia,” Ruffels said. “All the guys that travel to these sort of tournaments, these big caliber tournaments, we’re all very close. … We’re very confident in our system that

we’ve got back in Australia, the Golf Australia program, and I think the more that all of us play well in an international stage like this, the more it kind of proves that what we’re doing is right. So I think we’re all rooting for each other, and we’re all good mates.”

Mark Twain once called golf “A good walk spoiled.”

Match play, at least among amateurs, doesn’t quite offer more of the same, with most competitions ending in handshakes if not hugs.

Down the stretch of their match, Garrick and Hall briefly disappeared beneath the last dip in a sequence of three descending plateaus on RHF’s 18th hole.

What have you done this summer to prepare for the season?

What is your summer schedule like?

Well [Batavia coach Brad Nelson] has summer camp every morning from 9 to 11 a.m. So I go to that every day and then in the afternoons, I hit with a different group. So that’s usually how my week goes.

You played doubles last year.

Is that still the plan for this season?

No, I will be playing singles this season. Because my partner from this past year (Unterberg) graduated, I decided I wanted to play singles.

So is this offseason and what you work on different because of the switch from doubles to singles?

Yeah, I have been working a lot more on singles strategy.

Being on your own, you need to be in good shape because you run more. So I have still worked on my hitting and serving, but also a bunch on getting into shape and doing some conditioning.

Have you played singles before?

Not at Batavia. My first two years, I played doubles.

But I have done a lot of USTA (United States Tennis Asso-

Talk about the hard work that goes into a tennis offseason.

Well, I obviously love playing tennis, so I see it as more fun than work. I mean there’s definitely hard work, though, too. I have had a lot of fun playing and practicing with my friends.

What did you take away from having 11 seniors on the team last year?

It was great having that many experienced girls to look up to. It was great having them to hit with and learn from everything they have done and been through.

Being only one of two sophomores on the team last year, did it help having played on varsity as a freshman?

It did. It really helped me get ready and know what to expect last year. I had never played at that high of a level before so I got a lot of good experience from freshman year.

What are your biggest goals for this season?

I definitely want to try to qualify for state. I haven’t done that in either of my first two years, so I’m hoping to be able to do that.

What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming season?

Well, because it is my first season playing singles, I am really looking forward to a new challenge. I want to try to win as many matches as I can. I also want to do well at conference, sectionals and, like I said, make it to state.

Batavia junior girls tennis player Julianne Robinson had a successful 2014 season, which saw her make the Kane County Chronicle Girls Tennis All-Area Honorable Mention doubles team. But with her partner, Sydnee Unterberg, having graduated, Robinson will switch to singles this year. She caught up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat to discuss her offseason and expectations for her first high school season playing singles. Here’s an edited transcript:

Even as summer ends, crews seldom blue My summer umpiring season is just about complete.

I believe every area youth team is done for the summer. I may work a few more men’s adult league games, and an occasional game here or there, but now’s the time to give my equipment a good cleaning, dry clean my uniforms and rest up until the fall season gets started in a couple weeks.

While I have the luxury of now enjoying a nice break, many of my fellow umpires are getting ready for football or volleyball since they officiate those sports. They’re nose deep in their rulebooks and clinics and prepping for another new season.

At the end of fall, some of these same guys will transition into basketball and wrestling, and by the time the state series rolls around at the end of winter, they’ll jump right into softball and baseball. Talk about working year round; these guys are something else.

Take John Ettner as a prime example. He has turned officiating into his main career. In addition to baseball and softball, the Marengo resident also works football, basketball and volleyball.

“I’ve been in sports all my life and was a collegiate football and track athlete,” he said. “I can make more

money doing officiating then doing my daytime job, and I’m having a very good time doing it. The camaraderie with all the other officials has been a great thing.”

Football was Ettner’s first love, and if not for a back injury, he believes he may have had a shot of making an NFL roster. Interestingly, however, he’s sped up the ladder quickest not by officiating football, but umpiring softball.

“Softball is the one that has taken off the most for me and it’s become almost a year-round thing with domes and being able to play indoors in January and February,” he said. “I hope to be doing collegiate ball for softball and football within the next five years. I’ve learned that when you focus on one at a time you can really move up fast.”

Sugar Grove’s Jim Adamski put his umpire stuff away at the end of July and is now in the midst of a two-week respite before he starts football.

“It’s nice to give the body and the mind a break in order to shift into another sport,” he said. “I officiate yearround, and baseball is such a long season. It goes from way back in March, and can go well into August or longer with fall ball if you want to keep working it.”

QUILL THE UMPIRE CHRIS ROLLIN WALKER enjoying a break well off in the distance before football. I last worked a baseball game with Salat in 2012. I’ll never forget it. We were at Wheaton Academy, wearing short sleeves and enjoying 80-degree weather on St. Patrick’s Day. That feels like forever ago. Salat didn’t answer my call because he’s currently vacationing in Russia. So, I emailed him. I asked him how an official keeps everything straight with so many rules in multiple sports.

He wrote, “My advice would be to focus on one sport per season, attend clinics and always keep studying rule and case books.”

Adamski said summer basketball leagues, as well as 7-on-7 football tournaments help officials get ready for their upcoming seasons. Clinics with observers also prove helpful to get one to transition from calling strikes to tossing flags.

“I’ll work football but don’t know how deep I’ll get into the playoffs,” he said.

“The problem with football is there’s not much downtime afterward. I’ll do some middle

school basketball about the same time so there will be some overlap, but I try to keep that to minimum.”

Dennis Shamblin made the trip from Montgomery to Peoria a few weeks ago to attend a football officiating clinic. He isn’t done yet with baseball or softball, however either.

While fall leagues are still a few weeks away, Shamblin enjoys variety and will work the three sports simultaneously and then move on to basketball in the winter.

“Actually, my Saturdays and Sundays in September and October are filled with football, but there will be some weekdays later this month where I can work baseball,” he said. “In the past I’ve had days where I worked football early in the day and then wrapped up the night working a few softball games.”

The most common thing I heard from the guys who transition from baseball to football is that they love the camaraderie or their crew.

“With football you’re working a five-man crew all the time and aren’t just out there by yourself or with someone different every time,” Adamski said. “With baseball you can work with a different partner every day, plus you can have a game where you’re on the bases and

can go the whole game without really making a call.”

Dave Dahl is a five-sport official who also said being a part of a football crew makes it unique.

“As a crew you become a team,” he said. “With baseball, you’re showing up and many times have very little time to even do a pre-game.

With football, we’re sharing a locker room together, we’re seeing each other every week and we’re usually going out to eat together after games.

“And what’s also different about football and baseball is the fan response. I’ve done varsity baseball games in rural areas and you’re lucky to have 40 or 50 people there, and with football you’re talking hundreds or even thousands of fans.”

They both make a great point about working as a crew, but I have to admit that with baseball, one of the things I love is getting to work with so many different guys. This past spring and summer I met a lot of new umpires and worked with some old friends. Both were highlights.

Hall had just evened the match with a better score on the 17th hole, but Garrick responded with a brilliant 5-iron out of the rough, advancing the ball from 215 yards out to the fringe about 60 feet from the pin.

Hall laid up his approach shot, then chipped to within 12 feet.

After Garrick hit a lag put

to within four feet, Hall won the match with a crisp downhill birdie putt.

“I hit a great shot and put myself in position,” Garrick said. “He made a great putt.

Amazing putt.”

Moments later, an official pulled up in a golf cart to whisk Hall to the lunchroom, where he’d cool down and regroup for his second round match, an eventual 24hole marathon loss to another UCLA golfer, Jake Knapp.

You wondered how Seward might view the whole calla-ride sequence. Remember what Twain said about golf?

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Police in this Buffalo suburb on Friday addressed rumors swirling around Blackhawks star Patrick Kane, confirming their investigation of an “incident that allegedly occurred” at Kane’s lakefront home here last weekend.

It was the first official acknowledgment of the probe that first became widely known Thursday morning.

But Hamburg police officials declined to specify the nature of the allegations, which have been described in media reports as involving a woman.

And Hamburg Police Chief Gregory Wickett cautioned that a resolution to the case involving the three-time Stanley Cup champion is not imminent.

“At this time, we are gathering information and awaiting forensic testing results,” Wickett said, suggesting that Chicago reporters covering the case here should not “waste” time expecting further details to emerge from authorities in the coming days.

Wickett did not take questions from reporters after reading a brief statement.

He declined to say whether law-enforcement officials have spoken with Kane or if the player is cooperating with the probe.

Police said the alleged in-

cident at his house – which cost nearly $3 million – happened late Saturday or early Sunday.

The front gates of Kane’s home were closed Friday morning. But his white 2015 Chevy Tahoe with Illinois plates was parked in the driveway of his parents’ house in the middle-class neighborhood of south Buffalo where he grew up before becoming an NHL star and buying the nearly 6,000-square-foot mansion in Hamburg, on the shore of Lake Erie.

Neighbors in this suburb 13 miles from downtown told the Chicago Sun-Times they saw plainclothes police arrive in unmarked cars and search the 26-year-old’s home Sunday night, wearing synthetic gloves and shining flashlights in and around the property.

The investigation follows the Hawks’ third Stanley Cup championship in six seasons.

Kane was scheduled to enjoy his day with the cup today in Buffalo.

Hawks management said in a statement Thursday that they were “aware of the matter” and gathering information but declined to comment further. The NHL added that it also was “aware of a police investigation” and “following developments.”

Teens, smartphones and being a mom

Some days I feel like an unwitting character in a perpetual merry-goround of Snapchat posts.

If you’re parenting a teenager in possession of a smartphone, you probably know what I mean. My condolences on the loss of your dignity.

Snapchat, that irksome (to parents) app that allows users to create and post pictures and videos (to those on their approved “friends” list) purported to self-destruct in a few seconds (sure thing – think “screenshot,” folks), is all the rage among kids. A perfect storm of silliness and impulsivity and technology. Oh, the joy.

It began innocently enough.

“Mom?” Holly called, from the other room.

“Yes?” “Mom?” “Yes?” “Mom?” “WHAT!” I trilled. Then there was giggling. And then I got to re-live

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose said nonsense when it was re-played a moment later. After it was posted, of course. By the third or fourth go‘round, I was on to her. Yeah.

Another video features me standing at the top of the stairs and calling for a roll of toilet paper to be tossed up. “STAT.” You know, in a hurry.

I’m afraid to ask it that one made it onto her buddies’ screens. Good thing the phone is brand-new and her “friends” list is still in its infancy.

“I just sent it to Zoe,” Holly said when I balked. Oh, OK. (I suppose I should be grateful my teenager wants anything to do with me at all, right?)

And then there was the wrestling

match for the Hershey bar. It wasn’t pretty, but, hey, we’re talking about chocolate. (How she recorded whilst wrestling is beyond me. I won, by the way.)

My personal favorite, though, was recorded one morning last week as I made myself comfortable at the foot of her bed, as she climbed back in after retrieving her phone from my room (where it “sleeps”).

“So, what were you going to say?”

I asked, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes as I worked to scooch myself into a cozy, chat-worthy position.

But when I watched the replay I saw that she’d caught me, my bed-head raging, rocking side to side (like I said, scooching was involved) like a woman in an asylum.

I may have cursed, before hysterical laughter ensued. I don’t think that one got posted. I’ll still feed her.

The whole teens-with-phones thing does give me pause. Yes, we’ve

had multiple Internet-safety discussions, some of them quite serious, about the potential consequences of certain choices – including the ever-important “don’t you dare post that or you’ll lose your phone for a month” chat.

Payback’s fun, though.

Tuesday, when we arrived at her high school for registration, no fewer than three times cheerful staff people looked right at me as we approached and asked, “Freshman?”

“No, but thanks!” I replied, giggling, and pointed to my dear daughter.

“Nice one, mom,” she whispered, after it happened the first time. The second and third times? Not so much.

Yeah, that was fun.

Trees – tips for selection, when to plant and more With summer in full bloom, you may notice gaps in your landscape.

If you decide that a tree would add to your garden design, here are some planting tips to help ensure a long life for your new addition.

• Right tree, right location: When choosing a tree, consider its hardiness, mature size, insect and disease resistance, and sunlight and soil requirements. Contact the free service, JULIE, to locate your underground utilities so you can keep your tree away from cables and pipes.

It’s also a good idea to have the soil tested to see if you’ll need to amend for organic matter or nutrient levels. The Kane County Farm Bureau offers reasonably priced testing.

• Planting time: In general, it’s best to plant in the spring or fall, depending on the tree type. This is especially true for bare-root or burlap-wrapped trees that are harvested from the ground just before sale. Fall

• Digging the hole: Dig the hole 2 to 3 times wider than the root ball to encourage the roots to move horizontally. The depth should be the same as the height of the root ball, keeping the basal flare of the trunk above ground.

• Removing packaging and spreading the roots: When planting a tree wrapped in burlap or other material, place it in the hole first and then cut the wrapping material so it is below ground level.

Container-grown trees are simply removed from the pot and placed in the hole.

Spread out the roots before filling in the hole.

• Mulching: Reduce stress on your tree by mulching

with several inches of organic material to help conserve moisture. Spread the mulch 2 to 4 feet wide, keeping it away from the trunk.

• Watering: Trees can take up to three years to develop deep roots and will need to be watered during this time.

The first few weeks after planting, your tree may need daily watering; the next few months, it may need to be watered every other day.

Water if the top 1 to 2 inches of soil in the root ball is dry.

If it hasn’t rained more than a half inch during the week, water about 1.5 to 3 gallons for each inch of diameter of tree trunk.

Following these practices will give your tree a great start in your yard!

Health benefits of fermented foods not yet proven Dear Doctor K: My friend has started eating lots of fermented foods. She claims they are good for your health. Is that true?

What are the health benefits?

Dear Reader: Humans have been fermenting foods for thousands of years. Fermentation protects foods from spoiling and lends them a taste and texture that many people enjoy. Asian and African cultures use fermentation as a way to have seasonal foods all year, and to ensure there is enough to eat during food shortages. Soy sauce and sauerkraut are examples of fermented foods.

Fermentation is a process that uses bacteria and yeast to convert sugars to carbon dioxide, alcohol and lactic acid. The type of bacteria or yeast used during fermentation can produce different flavors and textures of food. Salt also plays an important role in the fermentation process.

It inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and enhances the flavor of the fermented food.

Fermented foods also contain probiotics. These are live bacteria that can help keep your gut healthy. Probiotics are added to foods to trigger the fermentation process.

You can add fermented foods to a balanced diet that includes protein, grains, fruit, vegetables

• Fermented dairy products.

Yogurt, cultured buttermilk, sour cream and some cheeses are fermented.

• Soy products. Miso, soy sauce and tempeh are fermented soy products.

• Fermented vegetables. Sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) and kimchi (a spicy Korean condiment often made with pickled cabbage) are examples of fermented vegetables.

Fermented foods may be healthy for many people. Fermentation helps the body to absorb antioxidants, such as the polyphenols and flavonoids found in red cabbage. And the live bacteria in some fermented foods may bring health benefits by restoring a healthy balance of different types of bacteria in the gut.

On the other hand, fermented foods are not healthy for everyone. Fermented soy and vegetable products are high in sodium.

For that reason, if you have high blood pressure, heart disease or impaired kidney function, you

should limit or avoid your intake of fermented foods. You can also rinse and drain them to remove some excess sodium.

A second risk for one type of fermented food: The World Health Organization has warned that heavy consumption of pickled foods may increase the risk of cancer.

Also, not all fermented foods contain live bacteria or probiotics. For example, fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut that are sold in grocery stores have been heated to a very high temperature. This kills all of the bacteria present in the food. The Nutrition Facts label on foods will contain the phrase “contains live and active cultures” if probiotics are present.

Do the probiotics present in many fermented foods have health benefits? In my opinion, this remains possible but unproven. Medical science is just in the beginning stages of learning about the possible value of different probiotics. So, if you are someone who is not at risk from fermented foods, by all means enjoy them.

Inebriation embarasses teen Dr. Wallace: Last weekend I went to a friend’s 18th birthday party and met a guy who was really cute. I’m shy and I didn’t have the nerve to go up and start a whole conversation with him, and I also didn’t know if he was with someone else.

I made a big mistake and drank more than I usually would to get enough courage to talk to him. When I finally got the nerve, I did talk to him, but I think I said some really stupid things. I gave him my number when the conversation ended and asked him to call me.

Well, he hasn’t called yet and nearly a week has gone by and I don’t think he is going to call.

I’m really feeling embarrassed and now I don’t know how to handle this.

I have since found out that this guy is a cousin of one of my friends. She told me that he thought I was cute and might have asked me out, but he doesn’t drink and doesn’t date girls who drink.

This whole thing has me really upset because I usually don’t even drink and I’m a member of SADD (Students Against Driving Drunk). I wasn’t driving to or from the party and the only reason I took a drink was to get up some courage to talk to this boy.

I’m feeling really stupid and depressed and I’m wondering if there’s any chance that I can get this guy to give me a second chance. Instead, try to find 13 winners.

In this auction, North’s response of three no-trump showed four or more spades and game-forcing values. (He had added value for his doubletons.

His hand had seven losers, three spades, one heart and three clubs, which also made it worth game.)
