The day was filled with joy, as I had the privilege of documenting Michelle Gillespie and Ronald King’s wedding ceremony this past Saturday at the Mill Creek Golf Club in Geneva.

Michelle and Ronald’s wedding was supposed to happen last summer, but it was put on hold after Michelle was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma just weeks before their ceremony.

Coroner reveals accreditation, says office is ‘worth investing in’

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell announced Thursday his has become the first coroner’s office in Illinois to achieve accreditation.

“I think I brought integrity back to the office,” the firstterm coroner said during a news conference at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva.

Russell’s predecessor, Chuck West, had been charged with official misconduct and died before the case went to trial. Russell campaigned on promises that he would restore integrity to an office previously marked by controversy.

Costs of pursuing accreditation included a one-time fee of $3,500, Russell said. He said a nominal fee will be charged annually; accreditation is granted for five years.

“I look forward to hearing more about how the benefits will exceed the costs,” Lauzen said. “I’m relieved that all the bad and upsetting things that we’ve heard in committee for a year and a half did not affect the outcome of accreditation.”

from the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners was, Russell said, “no small task.”

Obstacles included the nearly 50 unclaimed remains that had been abandoned on a dusty storage shelf, highly scrutinized budgets, a broken freezer and, most recently, mold in the morgue, he said.

But despite what some might call a tough year, he said, his office survived and thrived.

“We’ve gone from laughingstock to preferred stock,” Russell said.

When evaluating an agency for accreditation, the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners looks at 140 standards that fall into the categories of investigations, facilities, forensics and administration. Russell said the outsourcing of forensic operations to DuPage County didn’t hinder the accreditation process. Rather, he said, his office wouldn’t have passed muster if it weren’t for the agreement with DuPage. At the time of the on-site visit, he said, the mold

was present and other building issues were identified, including improper ventilation. He recalled the audit team as saying “this facility in its present state will not cut it.”

Russell emphasized that he needs support from the County Board so that a modernized coroner facility is included in the county’s five-year capital plan.

“We are worth investing in,” he said.

Russell is set to address board members at Friday’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting. In addition to the coroner’s 2015 budget request, the agenda includes a presentation about the morgue.

Traffic reconfiguration to open Route 38 overpass lanes KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Starting Monday, one lane of traffic in each direction will be opened on the new Route 38 bridge over the Union Pacific railroad tracks on Geneva’s east side.

Northbound Kautz Road access from Route 38 will be closed to traffic until the new roadway configuration is completed. A new detour route will direct Route 38 drivers north on Kirk Road, east on Averill Road and north on Kautz Road.

From Averill, southbound Kautz will allow access only to Roquette University and Prairie Landing Golf Club. The detour route is expected to remain in place until early summer 2015. The $28 million overpass project, which is being primarily funded with federal and state grants, will realign Route 38 just south of the existing roadway and feature a T-intersection with Kautz Road.

Two wider through lanes in each direction will allow cars to travel over the train tracks.

include left-turn lanes at various locations, curb and gutter work and new modernized traffic signals.

Geneva’s portion of the project is about $250,000, which will pay for intersection improvements at Route 38 and Kautz Road, electric work and water main relocations. Route 38 has remained open during construction, which began in late 2012, but traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes such as Kirk Road and Fabyan

Parkway, to avoid the area.

Once completed, more than 21,000 vehicles will be able to bypass the railroad crossing on a daily basis, which averages 129 commuter and freight trains each day. The overpass also will reduce pollution with enhanced traffic flow and cars no longer idling waiting for trains to clear the crossing.

The target completion date is summer or fall 2015.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT Former Mill Race Inn employees reflect on old times at reunion

bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – They were not the ladies who lunch, but rather the ladies who served the ladies who lunched.

More than 50 former employees of the now closed Mill Race Inn gathered for a reunion Thursday at the Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park.

Among them was Michelle Farwell of St. Charles who worked there from 1980 to 2007, starting out bussing tables for a year, then became a hostess for a year and then a waitress for 25 years.

“I worked there 27 years,” Farwell said. “I was 18, right out of high school. We were truly a family back in the day.

And so many of us worked there for so many years and went through growing up and marriages and births and deaths and everything. It was a wonderful happy environment all the time.”

Ann Carlson, formerly of St. Charles Township, said she worked there from 1960 to 1995.

“I did everything,” said Carlson, who has since retired to Sun City in Huntley. “I was a waitress, a head waitress, receptionist and I trained the girls on the computer.”

Cindy Snow, who worked there from 1974 to 1982, and then from 1991 to 1996, together with co-worker Stephany Frerichs – who worked there from 1975 to 1988 – won a Bahamas cruise for themselves and their husbands in a contest of wine servers.

“We were called ‘The Mill Racers,’ and the Mill Race Inn sponsored us,” Snow said. “It was held by American Express in West Dundee in 1982.

There were 23 restaurants, five from St. Charles.”

Contestants had to open a bottle, pour two glasses of wine and then follow an obstacle course to hand it off to the second person in the team

who followed the obstacles back to the beginning, Snow said.

“We weren’t the fastest, but no drop of wine was spilled,” Snow said. “You were penalized 15 seconds for spilling wine.”

Snow and Frerichs both live in Maple Park and main-

tain a friendship that began at the Mill Race Inn. In the midst of all the joy in their reunion was the bittersweet knowledge that the restaurant they so loved will likely be torn down.

The iconic eatery closed in January 2011 and went into foreclosure. Shodeen Devel-

opment in Geneva bought it in March.

David Patzelt, president of ShoDeen Construction, said the company is still considering its options for what to do with the property.

“We are working with a second architect and planner to see what ideas they have,” Patzelt said. “We are still in think-tank mode.”

Bonnie Off of North Aurora, who also came to the reunion, had been a co-owner.

Her family had owned it since her grandfather bought it in 1946 until they sold it in 2004.

“The Mill Race Inn was a magical place – it really was,” Off said.

The Mill Race Inn began as a blacksmith shop in 1842 owned by Julius and Edward Alexander, according to the history of the property.

In 1933, sisters Ann and Marjorie Forsythe turned

the smithy into a tearoom.

They called it the Mill Race Inn, taking its name from a grist mill upstream, where water diverted from the river turned the mill wheels, called a “mill race.”

“Kate Rafferty who owned the Little Traveler came to the Forsythe sisters and said, ‘I have all this carriage trade coming to the Little Traveler from the North Shore and there’s no place for them to eat,’ ” Off said. “The Little Traveler at that time didn’t have any kind of food service.”

At the height of the Great Depression, the Forsythe sisters opened a little lunchroom in the little blacksmith shop, the original stone room of the Mill Race.

Off’s grandfather, Ray C. Johns, bought it in 1946 and operated it for three generations.

His daughter Raye Ellsworth – Off’s mother – ran the business after that, adding a waterfront boardwalk and distinct venues inside called the Gazebo, The Mill Grill, The Duck Inn and Mallards.

With each addition and new offering, Off said, the restaurant venue welcomed a new and expanded clientele.

The family sold it in 2004.

Off said she approved of the Shodeen family buying the former restaurant property.

“I really was pleased when Kent [Shodeen] bought it because I know that he will get it done – that they will get it done,” Off said. “They can do it politically. They can do it financially. It’s not going to sit there and rot any more – which was breaking my heart.”

City wants Clifford McIlvaine to finish improvement project

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles resident Clifford McIlvaine is seeking financial compensation from the city for installing a different style of roof on his house than he wanted.

Kane County Judge David Akemann last year allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St., including correcting an unfinished roof. The city had sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to finish an improvement project that was started more than 30 years ago.

“We contend that the city didn’t have the authority to

change the style of the roof,” McIlvaine attorney Philip Piscopo said after a hearing Thursday in the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva. “It is a unique design. He purchased materials for it.”

St. Charles hired Absolute Construction and Roofing to install a conventional Clifford asphalt roof McIlvaine on the house.

McIlvaine wanted to install a foam and steel roof, for which he had obtained a permit.

that several construction vehicles remain on McIlvaine’s property, as well as construction debris.

“We think that he should have removed or enclosed the construction vehicles by now,” Luetkehans said. “He did remove the boom truck.”

McIlvaine was supposed to have removed the construction debris by July 31. Piscopo said the only construction debris that remains is a 16foot wooden beam, and that it will be removed by Monday.

McIlvaine plans to build a storage facility on his property that will be used in part to store the vehicles.

“I hope to get it up in several weeks,” he said.

McIlvaine will be back in court Aug. 19.

GENEVA – State law has allowed an extension of grace-period voter registration through Election Day for the Nov. 4 election, the Kane County Clerk’s Office has announced.

This extension of grace-period registration applies only to that election until the polls close.

This means an unregistered qualified elector may register to vote, and a registered voter may submit a change of address form, in person at any permanent polling place for early voting established through the day of the election.

The state law also states registered, grace-period voters who want to vote must do so by grace-period voting.

Grace-period registration will begin Oct. 8 at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, Building B, at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. Two forms of current identification are required, and voters must vote after their registration is processed.

To register, a person must be a U.S. citizen, 18 on or before the date of the general election, a resident of the precinct for at least 30 days before the election and provide two forms of identification, one of which shows a current name and address.

The Holmstad throws party for 100-year-old resident

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Holmstad resident Gladys Northrup smiled broadly Thursday as she blew out the candle on the cake celebrating her 100th birthday.

“We’ve been having a ball,” Northrup said. “The best thing is having my family here.”

Northrup was born Aug. 7, 1914, and moved to The Holmstad when she was 87. She previously lived in Chillicothe in central Illinois.

Staff and fellow residents sang several songs in honor of Northrup’s birthday, including “In The Good Old Summertime,” “Keep on the Sunny Side” and fittingly, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

“She is a lifetime fan of the Cubs and her sister, Grace, was an equally strong fan of the Cardinals,” said her daughter, Karen Fehringer.

honored at her church for her more than 50 years in the choir.

Fehringer said she was happy to be celebrating her mother’s birthday.

“It’s quite an accomplishment to get to 100,” she said.

“She’s doing pretty well at this point.”

Northrup’s grandson, Rick Fulk of Elburn, was among other family members at the party.

“We’ve kind of grown up together,” Fulk said. “We used to watch Cubs games together. She was always there for me.”

He said Northrup has tried to steer clear of any bad habits in her lifetime, which might have attributed to her long life. He said she never drank or smoked.

Northrup continues to play cards and remain active, The Holmstad employee Kelly Dalbis noted.

“She has a very fun sense of humor,” she said. “She’s so loving and appreciative of any help and any care she gets.”

Kane County Judge to allow cameras in courtroom; will explore restrictions

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWN SHIP – A Geneva doctor accused of aggravated criminal sexual assault pleaded not guilty Thursday and asked for a jury trial.

Dr. Mark G. Lewis, 55, of Geneva, was indicted this week on charges of aggravat-

ed criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault, both felonies.

At his arraignment before Kane County Circuit Court Judge John Barsanti, Lewis waived a reading of the charges through his attorneys, Michael Krejci and Dean Kekos.

Barsanti said Lewis, if convicted, faces up to 30

years in prison on the more serious charge, which could be doubled through the state’s extended terms of sentencing, with no probation.

If convicted of the lesser charge, Lewis faces up to 15 years in prison, which also could be doubled, Barsanti said, but with the possibility of Mark G. Lewis probation.

Lewis was arrested in his office, July 8. Lewis pre-

viously lived in St. Charles where police and prosecutors allege he sexually assaulted a woman he knew on Nov. 17, 2012.

State regulators also temporarily suspended Lewis’ medical license in June, alleging he had inappropriate sexual relations with several patients and also alleging inappropriate prescribing of controlled substances to numerous individuals.

Also on Thursday, Krejci objected to extended media coverage, a request filed by the Kane County Chronicle.

“Extended media coverage ... would materially interfere with [Lewis’] right to a fair trial,” Krejci said. “It could possibly taint the jury pool ... as well as be a distraction.”

Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams said he had no objection to extended media coverage. Barsanti ruled that he would grant the newspaper’s request to allow cameras in the courtroom, but he set a hearing for Aug. 28 to discuss rules and restrictions on the extended media coverage.

N. Aurora man hurt in motorcycle crash AURORA – Jose S. Sanchez, 29, of the 100 block of East State Street in North Aurora, was charged Wednesday afternoon with failure to reduce speed, driving without a valid motorcycle license and driving without a driver’s license after his motorcycle rear-ended a car.

The crash occurred at 3:50 p.m. on River Road, 25 feet west of Clearwater Drive.

According to Aurora police, Sanchez was driving his 2005 Honda CBR 600 motorcycle north on River Road, apparently at a high rate of speed, when his motorcycle hit a 2009 Pontiac Sedan driven by a 49-year-old North Aurora woman, who also was driving north.

Sanchez was ejected from the motorcycle and hit the rear windshield of the Pontiac. He fell off the vehicle when it stopped, police said.

He was taken to an Aurora hospital for serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. The driver of the Pontiac refused medical attention.

Crude restrictions THE WASHINGTON POST The United States is a rising oil exporter. That sentence is amazing when you consider that federal law technically bans crude oil exports.

Last week, the BW Zambesi oil tanker left Texas City, Texas, with $40 million worth of minimally processed condensate, a form of oil, and headed to South Korea. This was the first shipment after a Commerce Department determination that decades-old federal restrictions on crude oil exports do not apply to condensate from which drillers have removed various natural compounds.

This policy change may clear the way for more U.S. crude exports. While polls show Americans are worried about that prospect, it actually is an unambiguous win for the country. If anything, the rules should get less restrictive.

The case against U.S. oil exports seems simple and obvious: Why allow them when the country still imports some crude? The answer is slightly more complicated.

The U.S. has become an energy powerhouse, with crude oil production leaping some 48 percent in the last few years.

New technology is tapping oil-bearing shale formations in states such as North Dakota and Texas.

Most of this product is light oil, which does not require heavy refining. Some of the most advanced refineries in the world are along the Gulf Coast, but that’s actually a problem: Their owners invested in expensive facilities suited to refining heavier crude, so there is a mismatch between the refining infrastructure and the type

of crude flowing from U.S. wells.

In the deeply interconnected global oil market, in which borders matter less than many people think, the obvious solution is to allow oil companies to ship the light crude to refineries suited for processing it, supporting U.S. profits and U.S. jobs in the process, and to tolerate imports of crude oil that U.S. refineries can handle.

But what about energy security? The Council on Foreign Relations’s Blake Clayton points out that expanded exports would encourage the development of oil fields and transport infrastructure, which would help the country weather some disruption in the global oil trade.

Then there is the question of what lifting the ban would mean for domestic gasoline prices.

This embarrassing debate discredits the Obama administration as it lectures other nations about irrational government barriers and supports in the fossil fuels business, which skew consumption habits and reduce the resilience of the world oil market on which everyone depends.

The export ban was a desperate ploy in the 1970s to control commodities markets amid spikes in oil prices induced by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Keeping it in place now is an economically incoherent policy, particularly when removing it would encourage an industry that is transforming the fortunes of large swaths of the nation.

Congress should lift the ban entirely.

Until then, Commerce should allow as much oil as it can to flow through the ban’s exceptions.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DON’T RESORT TO THROW-AWAY REMARKS To the Editor: On July 30, the Kane County Chronicle published a letter from Walt Zlotow comparing the current conflict in Gaza with the Nazi horrors against the Jewish people in the Warsaw ghetto. Contrary to the title you assigned the letter, no “valid parallel” exists between the two.

The Warsaw ghetto was created by Nazis as an initial step toward the total extermination of Jews. Gaza is not a ghetto created by Israel. The action of Egypt capturing Gaza started in the 1940s, and Egypt militarily administered it from 1948 until 1967.

The Warsaw ghetto walls were built to contain the Jews and better serve the purpose of transporting Jews to death camps. Israel has no death camps. The walls in Gaza were built to prevent suicide bombings that were killing innocent Israeli lives; after their

construction, suicide bombings fell 90 percent, according to www.nzfoi.org.

Polish Jews did not have the stated purpose of destroying the nation of Germany and used violence as a last resort.

Hamas has an express goal of destroying Israel and openly advocates violent action.

The Gaza blockade has been due to Hamas’ policy of violence. On those (rare) occasions in the past when the level of violence was low, Israel allowed Gazans to find employment within Israel, and commerce was allowed to develop. Despite offering the Germans no resistance, Jews weren’t allowed to be employed outside the Ghetto at their previous jobs.

The economic deprivation and low living standards of Palestinian refugees are deplorable, but if their society could focus on economic development – instead of diverting needed resources to their war effort – the well-be-

ing of their people would be greatly advanced. Rather than use concrete to build schools, shelter or stores, Hamas uses the material to build tunnels from which to stage raids on Israel.

When Gazans fire hundreds of rockets and mortars to Israeli population centers, these attacks go unreported in the West. Yet when Israel acts decisively to address the safety of its citizens, it is accused of reacting disproportionately.

In 2012, Bernie Farber wrote in The Huffington Post, “Before you compare something to Hitler and Nazis ... don’t.” He continued, “At that point, the discussion is over; the one using the analogy has lost, for the argument has become irrational.”

The tragedy in Gaza and Israel is incredibly complex. Let’s not resort to cheap and irrational throw-away remarks.

‘WELL WORTH IT’ Maher uses walk to propel him through life

att Maher traded a 10 percent chance to live beyond childbirth for 10 excruciatingly blissful hours walking near Chicago’s lakefront Sunday.

He entered the world facing challenging odds and figures, so forgive him for failing to get too preoccupied about time.

The one-pound, six-ounce infant born 16 weeks prematurely is 23 now and has grown to 5-foot-4 and 152 pounds. All of him rejoiced as he walked the final steps of his first half marathon with several members of his St. Charles family trekking the final five miles by Maher’s side.

“It was a whole inspiring weekend,” Maher said. “It was one of the best weekends I’ve had in a long time.”

He wants to get his personal training certification. He dreams of one day opening his own gym to train Special Olympic athletes.

Yes, Maher has cerebral palsy, but he plans to forever use Sunday to show himself that’s all but irrelevant when it comes to setting goals for the rest of his life.

“What do you say? What do you say about a kid who was never supposed to live, let alone walk around and do things, who just walked a half marathon?” said Kristy

Kristy Maher, her husband, Jim, and their oldest son, 30-year-old Kevin, joined Matt Maher’s journey in progress Sunday. Matt Maher’s fraternal twin sister, Michelle, who lives in Denver, was unable to attend, but don’t think she lacked a hand in all this.

Growing up, Matt Maher admired the neighborhood running group that included his mother and sister – veterans of last year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon – and channeled their influence when he registered for the race in May. “I just kind of looked at that and I just said there’s got to be something out there that I can do,” Maher said. “I might not be able to run as fast as they can, but there’s got to be a race out there that accommodates [me].”

The NBC reality weightloss series “The Biggest Loser,” one of Maher’s

favorite programs, sponsored Sunday’s races, which also included a 5K and youth mile and started and finished outside Soldier Field. The show’s title is an oxymoron, and the camaraderie still seems to happily stick with officials and contestants.

More on that later.

Allowed to begin about 90 minutes earlier than the scheduled 7:30 a.m. start time, Maher took to the course with lontime trainer Phil DeMonte, now with The Speed School in St. Charles.

In his final training before the race, Maher walked 10 miles in about 5½ hours, but found that pace difficult to match on race day.

Around the eighth mile of his 13.1 mile journey, he felt especially achy. His hip flexors, already tight from his cerebral palsy, nagged in tandem with the rest of his body.

The Cougars’ roster roulette slowed for a change this week.

Transactions have been minimal since the club embarked on a season-high, seven-game road trip to Peoria and Cedar Rapids, although the protocol for welcoming newcomers remains close at hand just in case.

“Introduce yourself and keep it going,” outfielder Trey Martin said. “Just put them in the lineup and time to start playing together.”

Considering Trey Martin all the climbing numbers around Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, that formula seems to be working.

In addition to roster Dave Dudzinski moves – which include 10 players promoted from Class-A Kane County to Advanced-A Daytona – the Cougars’ win total keeps mounting, too.

Lots to chew on at St. Charles CC FROM THE TEE Kevin Druley Thirty-seven goats plus 30 ecstatic blind veterans plus about $100,000 in funds raised equals a pretty eventful recent stretch at St. Charles Country Club.

First, let’s ruminate on the ruminants.

Acting on the idea of golf course superintendent Chuck Barber, the country club again rented goats this summer to help eliminate overgrowth on the property’s quarry course, adjacent to the main course.

With some vegetation on the sixhole, undulating course especially thick and difficult to manage, the goats chomped away for four weeks, leaving earlier this week.

“That’s what they do; they eat,” club manager Ken Vranek said. “And they eat everything. And it’s awesome.”

And it’s fine by club officials. And several spectating members and their children.

The practice did not involve herbicides and kept the goats roaming about a wide area with a movable fence. The club initially rented the goats for two weeks, but extended their stay for two more.

“No goats were injured in any way in this undertaking,” Vranek said.

On Wednesday, the club continued a longer-standing custom by welcoming a group of blind veterans from around the region for a golf experience. Golf pro Jim Sutherland coordinated the event.

Members met veterans at the club entrance and soon were spending their mornings trading stories for assistance on the course. Groups typically played three to six holes, depending on the veterans’ preference.

Vranek said one of the most seasoned military men among the group reflected on the 1960s and the Cuban missile crisis.

“Our members get a tremendous amount of goodwill out of it in their hearts,” Vranek said. “They come back and go, ‘That was awesome.’ ” A similar theme emerged from Monday’s annual Charity Golf Classic.

This year’s event benefited Tri-City Health Partnership and Lazarus House, and included a full day of golf, a silent auction and dinner.

Vranek said the country club will donate $45,000 to $50,000 to both the health partnership and Lazarus House.

The country club donated about $1 million to local charities in the 12 years before 2014.

Competing in the Girls 14 to 15 division, Gaffney finished eighth in the 12-player field. Only the top two finishers advanced to regionals at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Kacie Gaffney Carmel, Indiana, in September.

There, players will vie for a trip to nationals at Augusta National in Georgia in April.

Gaffney, a sectional qualifier in her freshman season at East, secured a berth at Cog Hill by placing third in her age bracket at her local qualifier at Cantigny in Wheaton on June 26.

CMN benefit excites hosts: St. Charles Country Club, Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles and Geneva’s Mill Creek Golf Club were among six regional courses set to host The Ace Hardware Foundation’s 23rd annual vendor golf outing Thursday.

The daylong effort seeked to raise $1 million to benefit hospitals in the Children’s Miracle Network.

“It’s one of our favorite events just because we get to see all the efforts the people of the charity put in,” Pheasant Run pro Jamie Nieto said. “Some of

the kids actually come out from the Miracle Network, and golfers really enjoy that, to see what their donation is going to help.

“And then from us, it’s a busy morning, but once we get them out there, it’s just wait until they get back in. So it’s a good day for us.”

St. Charles resident and Wheaton Academy product Blake Biddle will tee off at 8:10 a.m. Monday as he begins play in the U.S. Amateur at the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands and Riverside Blake Biddle courses.

The tournament marks Biddle’s third Amateur in four years.

Biddle, who will be a graduate assistant at Arkansas in the fall, will play alongside Alex Ellis of Austin, Texas, and Matthew Naumec of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, for separate 18-hole rounds Monday and Tuesday.

After that, the beginning field of 312 will be cut to the low 64 players, who will begin a six-round, match-play tournament Wednesday. The Amateur concludes with a 36-hole championship match Aug. 17.

emotion when I finished,” Maher said. “Not only because I finished, but the fact that they were still there.”

DeMonte, who has trained Maher in spots for the past few years, said Maher had to exert three to four times more effort than athletes without his affliction.

“For him, it was just sheer determination with that,” DeMonte said. “Every ounce of what he had, he gave to that half marathon. ... You couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Of course, Maher will.

The 2009 St. Charles East graduate relishes challeng-

ing himself, and already has designs on entering another half marathon this year.

One option, in Libertyville, has a 6½-hour time limit, a built-in test for Maher to recapture his pre-race training pace.

Before pursuing half marathons, Maher competed in three International Natural Bodybuilding Association competitons in 2013, winning each through the INBA’s physically challenged division.

Ultimately, though, he felt the sport wasn’t for him.

Powerlifting also is on Maher’s radar, with a few other as-yet-uncovered options potentially on the way. Hickerson, after all, posted pictures with Maher on social media and has talked about having Maher visit him in Tennessee.

Wherever he goes, Maher plans to tote Sunday’s memories with him. Those are never a burden.

“It was well worth it,” Maher said. “It was well worth it.”

For the final five-plus miles, Maher’s parents, brother and trainer alternated shoulders for support.

At around 4 p.m., as the finish line beckoned, they yearned for Maher’s sake to see a few more well-wishers waiting even though the course had been closed for a few hours.

“At that point as a parent, to watch each step your child takes and he was just wincing in pain. … I just kept thinking, we’re going to get back there and they’re all going to be gone and nobody’s going to be able to know what he did,” Kristy Maher said.

Not quite. In addition to the race directors and a few other officials, three former show contestants watched Maher finish. That number included recent fan-favorite Vinny Hickerson, who lost nearly 200 pounds on the show in 2011.

Brown’s mother taught Spanish and loved researching and discussing other countries. Apparently, that passion also prompted her to eschew any baby name books.

Brown’s father didn’t mind, under one condition: “As long as you keep putting out boys,” Brown began, remembering his dad’s words, “you can name them whatever you want to name them.”

Brown met Dudzinski’s parents, David and Barb, several times over, including in late April 2010, as Brown visited the group at Kaneland shortly after joining Holy Cross. Sean Kearney, the coach who recruited Dudzinski, then a high school senior, was fired after leading the Crusaders to a 9-22 record in his lone season.

Dudzinski, of course, remained with Holy Cross, culminating with a senior season

that included averages of 15.1 points and 7.4 rebounds a game.

The 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward also earned All- Patriot League honors as the Crusaders won 20 games, a high-water mark in Brown’s four seasons.

“It was a neat thing for us and for the school that he stayed,” Brown said. “I don’t think we want to know what would have happened if he hadn’t decided to stay. We wouldn’t be where we are now, I can tell you that.”

Playing in a conference that produced two 2013 NBA Draft picks – including lottery selection C.J. McCollum, a Lehigh guard who went 10th overall to Portland – left Dudzinski feeling confident about competing in Europe.

“I kind of look back at some of those games. We beat some good teams and we lost to some good teams,” Dudzinski said.

“But night in, night out, you had to bring it.”

Before those events shortened the National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series, former Knights Ty Hamer, Drew Peters and Bobby Thorson helped the Crystal Lake Cardinals thrash opponents by a combined score of 39-2 in three pool play victories.

The Cardinals ultimately were declared the winners of the 16-team tournament this week via the run differential tiebreaker, with Thorson, a right-hander and corner infielder, garnering MVP honors.

In mid-June, Kaneland opened its summer baseball schedule by winning the 17U division at Toledeo’s Battle of the Bats tournament. The Knights pitched three complete games as part of a 4-0 finish.

Food bank program receives $50,000 donation

Morgan Stanley employees present a $50,000 donation in support of Northern Illinois Food Bank’s School Pantry Program on Aug. 6 at Northern Illinois Food Bank’s West Suburban Center in Geneva. The funding will help establish a new school pantry in West Chicago, in collaboration with WeGo Together for Kids, and will provide support to Family Care Closet school pantry in North Chicago, states a news release. Morgan Stanley’s volunteers also spent the afternoon volunteering at the Food Bank, the release states.

ST. CHARLES – Sew Generously, a Bernina dealer and fabric store in St. Charles, will host an allnight Sew-A-Thon on Friday, Aug. 15, for the Mutual Ground Women and Children’s Domestic Violence Shelter in Aurora.

The Sew Generously SewA-Thon will take place from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16.

According to a news release, attendees will be asked to assemble quilts for Mutual Ground, and are invited to stay for any length of time.

Customers who sew all 12 hours will be eligible to win a grand prize of a new Bernette Chicago sewing and

embroidery machine.

The winner must be present at 7 a.m. and still sewing up until the end.

“Customers can choose when and how to attend,” said owner Karin Furio, in the release. “But prizes get better and better as the night goes on.”

Other festivities during the event include door prizes every hour, snacks and caffeine all night and a breakfast from Panera Bread at 7 a.m.

The event will be Sew Generously’s second Sew-AThon that will take place on behalf of Mutual Ground.

The warm days of summer soon will end, but convertible season should continue into the fall.

One of the more engaging convertibles on the market is the 2014 Beetle. It is spunky, easy to maneuver and fun.

In addition, the canvas top goes up or down in 15 seconds, which is remarkable and convenient. The up or down process can begin or end at a stop light.

The process of lowering or raising the softtop is simple and easy. One control button is in charge. Push it forward and the softtop goes down. Push it in the opposite direction and it raises back into place. The side windows open or close as the top goes up or down.

The speed of the process is assisted by the convertible design. The canvas top does not get stored but folds and rests, more or less, on the rear surface of the convertible. There is no storage compartment to open and close, which can take time.

When the top is down, sight lines to the rear are great. When the top is up, sight lines to the rear are horrible. But, why is the top up? In fair weather, it always should be down.

Since the R-Line Beetle convertible is at the top of the Beetle price list at an asking price of $29,395, it is equipped with more than the base Beetle coupe, which is pegged at $20,295. The R-Line has Volkswagen’s new 2-liter turbocharged, dual overhead cam, four-cylinder engine, instead of the more standard 2.5-liter, 170-horsepower machine. Wheels are Twister-brand 18inch alloy, instead of 17-inch steel. Plus the R-Line has a rear spoiler, fog lights, wider tires (235), auxiliary ports for audio players, iPod cable, Bluetooth, three-pod dashboard gauge cluster for boost pressure, sport lap/timer stop watch, and oil temperature. The cluster is behind a leather-clad manual tilt and telescope steering wheel.

The turbo R-Line has been tested in sprinting from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds. Recommended fuel is premium. Fuel usage during a recent test week was fairly good. The 3,238-pound R-Line averaged 27.3 miles per gallon.

There is a 14.5-gallon fuel tank underneath.

Seating surfaces are leather-like vinyl. They look like real calf skin. Entry to the rear seat is simple as the front bucket seats fold forward. But there is virtually no leg room in the rear, although the company claims there are 31.4 inches of maneuverability. Cargo space in the trunk measures seven cubic feet.

In bad weather when the top is up, this convertible turns into a virtual hardtop coupe. There is no air leakage at the seams where the soft canvas top meets the structural elements of this convertible. This is a tight convertible.

Niceties on the test R-Line convertible included power and heated exterior mirrors, power windows and door locks, cruise control, air conditioning with pollen filter, variable intermittent wipers, heated windshield washer nozzles, halogen headlamps, fully galvanized sheet metal, rear spoiler, tire pressure monitor, speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip meter and computer (trip time, trip length, average trip speed, average trip fuel consumption, current fuel consumption and miles to empty), coolant temperature, fuel and outside temperature gauges, two 12-volt outlets, visor vanity mirrors, and remote entry on key fob.

and down for the driver.

The eight-speaker sound system has AM-FM stereo radio as standard, auxiliary input for portable audio players, Bluetooth, MP3 and compact disc players, and a media device interface with iPod cable.

Safety mechanicals include traction and stability controls, and doors that automatically lock when the car reaches eight miles per hour. They will unlock if an air bag deploys.

Besides three-point seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters in front, there are airbags in front, on the sides (front only) and overhead for two rows. There is structural support in the event of a rollover. An antilock braking system is standard. Discs measure 12.3 inches in front and 10.7 inches in the rear.

All Beetles are fitted with a struttype front suspension with a lower control arm and an anti-roll bar. A torsion beam with coil springs and telescopic dampers are at the rear.

The turbo models differ in that the rear suspension is multi-link with coil springs with an anti-roll bar, but the same telescopic dampers.

Volkswagen not only offers a threeyear or 36,000-mile warranty with roadside assistance, and the five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, but

the company also offers free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles.

In 1998 Volkswagen modified the name of the Beetle. It became the New Beetle, but, in 2012, VW dropped the “New” to return to a simple Beetle name, which is what it was when this “bug” arrived on the automotive scene in the United States in 1949. Two were sold that year.

The coupe built in the iconic shape of a bug still looks like one, but the 1998 design has been deemphasized.

There were three arches to the New Beetle coupe in 1998, an arch for the fenders framing the engine in front and then a trunk in the rear, plus a center arch for the cabin. Today’s design has flattened the center arch and it curves down on top of the end of the rear fender arches.

The current Beetle is a half-inch lower, three inches wider and six inches longer than the New Beetle.

The windshield is more vertical and the dashboard’s flower vase is gone.

“Welcome to your Beetle” appears in print on the information panel behind the leather-clad steering wheel when the key is inserted into the ignition.

‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’: Merely amiable

By MARK JENKINS Special to The Washington Post French and Indian restaurants stage a culinary showdown in “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” but the result is neither rich nor spicy. This rom-com-drama is merely amiable, even when the two central couples pretend to be bristlingly incompatible.

The movie is essentially a return to “Chocolat,” director Lasse Hallstrom’s 2000 tale of a provincial French town that reacts badly to the arrival of deliciousness. In that story, the intrusion was at least French; in this one, it’s Indian.

The newcomers are led by Papa (veteran Indian actor Om Puri), who decides to stay in the immaculately picturesque village where his family van breaks down. He has five children, but only one matters to the story: Hassan (Manish Dayal), a kitchen savant.

The story is driven by three conflicts, but two are easily resolved and the third is never really explained.

Papa and Hassan’s new eatery sits 100 feet across a rural road from a Michelin-starred landmark run by the imperious Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). She attempts to sabotage the competition, but finds Papa every bit as bull-headed as she is. Indeed, the two widowed restaurateurs seem a natural match.

The very first person the family meets, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), is a stock character in movies about foreigners in the South of France: the young beauty who travels exclusively by bicycle and always wears dresses.

(Put a pair of Levis on Marguerite and she’d curdle like overheated hollandaise.) She and Hassan are clearly meant to mate, but Marguerite is an aspiring chef who’s jealous of his culinary genius.

The other antagonism

is more substantial, which may be why the filmmakers sidestep it. The Indian family was driven from Mumbai by a mob that burned down its restaurant, killing Papa’s wife and the kids’ mother.

But why? The source novel (by Richard C. Morais) acknowledges that Papa and his brood are Muslim, something the movie never mentions.

(The only hints are that Hindus tend not to be named “Hassan,” or to cook veal and beef.)

The script is by Stephen Knight, whose work is usually tougher and tighter. Next to his recent directing debut, “Locke,” this movie looks flabby. Perhaps seeking to retain something of the book’s rhythm, Knight and Hallstrom let a very simple story meander for two hours and include episodes that serve no dramatic purpose. Maybe they hoped the exuberant A.R. Rahman score would keep things moving.

Dayal is bland and Le Bon not much zestier, although both can reasonably blame underwritten parts. Puri and Mirren are lively and well-matched, even if the British actress’ French accent is distracting. As the town’s gourmet mayor, Michel Blanc is a big pleasure in a small role.

But the real stars, of course, are the food and the scenery, both bathed in celestial light. “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is basically a promo reel for small-town France and Gallo-Indian food fusion.

Anyone who requires a more substantial meal should eat before heading to the theater.

Vaginal atrophy is likely cause of post-menopausal bleeding Dear Doctor K: I thought I entered menopause five years ago, but now I seem to be having a period again. Is this normal?

Dear Reader: A woman is considered to be in menopause once it has been one year since her last period. Once menopause begins, vaginal bleeding is not normal.

Post-menopausal bleeding (PMB) can happen for many reasons. It may result from infection or injury. Non-cancerous growths such as polyps and fibroids can cause PMB. So can bleeding disorders or use of blood thinners.

The most worrisome cause of PMB is cancer, especially of the uterus. Cancer can usually be ruled out with a biopsy and a pelvic ultrasound. But if you do have cancer or pre-cancer of the uterus, it’s very important to make the diagnosis – and begin treatment – as early as possible.

If the bleeding is from your vaginal walls, the likely cause is vaginal atrophy. This accounts for about half of the cases of PMB. Vaginal atrophy develops during menopause, when age-re-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff lated changes cause the ovaries to make less estrogen. Estrogen helps keep vaginal tissues lubricated and healthy. When levels of estrogen are low, vaginal tissue becomes thin, dry and shrunken.

The vagina becomes prone to inflammation and tearing. Vaginal atrophy typically develops slowly.

You may not notice any symptoms until five to 10 years after menopause begins.

You can try a water-soluble vaginal lubricant to relieve vaginal dryness and moisten vaginal tissues. If that doesn’t work, vaginal atrophy estrogen therapy can help. Your doctor may prescribe an estrogen pill, a topical estrogen cream, vaginal suppositories, an estrogen skin patch or a vaginal estrogen ring.

So, schedule an appointment with your doctor. He or she needs to identify the source of your

bleeding before you can take the next step. One or more of three diagnostic tests often is ordered: • An endometrial biopsy. A sample of the inner lining of your uterus is taken to look for malignant cells.

• A pelvic ultrasound. This imaging test can look at the thickness of the lining of your uterus, and for non-cancerous growths in the uterus, as well as possible cancers in the ovaries.

• A Pap smear. This test can spot cancer of the cervix, another cause of PMB. Post-menopausal bleeding is one of those symptoms that cause you to worry even though it usually turns out you had nothing to worry about. Because it can indicate cancer, it has to be taken seriously. Fortunately, at the end of the diagnostic evaluation, the news usually is good.

I’m on the debate team, president of the science club, a member of the marching band and a member of the National Honor Society. With participation in these excellent academic groups, hardly anyone knows of my achievements. But everyone on campus knows the football quarterback, the basketball star and the guy who hits the home runs for the baseball team.

It’s almost like our school is more popular for our athletic teams than for our academics.

Our football team won eight games and lost only two. All the kids know this. Our debate team was undefeated and we won a trophy, but no one knows or cares about us.

I know that you are a former high school principal. Did you allow the athletic department to dominate at the expense of the academic program? – Jeremy, Houston, Texas Dear Jeremy: The prime goal for every school, both public and private, must be to provide the best possible academic program and to instill in students a desire to learn to reach their full potential academically.

But extracurricular programs offer students the opportunity to broaden their educational experience. You are a wise young man for participating in these programs.

Athletics are also an important section of the extracurricular program. Athletics not only allow the participants to learn the game and enjoy the competition, but they also help the student body to join

The Brookings Institution, a nonprofit research organization, found that athletics could possibly aid academics. Their study found that schools that have powerful athletic teams generally have math and reading scores equal to schools that are not sports powerhouses.

Team sports are a dominant factor in high school culture, and researchers who have studied student athletes for the past 50 years have found that they generally have higher grades, better attendance and fewer discipline problems than non-athlete students do.

The Brookings report compared scores on state-required reading and math tests in 141 high schools, in 24 states, that excelled in athletics. This report was the first to show that a school’s focus on sports can boost academic achievement school-wide, not just for the athletes.

When I was a high school administrator, I considered academics the prime goal while an extracurricular program was important, but never at the expense of academics.

You are a very bright young man, and I’d like to offer my congratulations on an excellent academic record and wonderful extracurricular activities.
