Geneva Cycle owner works to educate customers on bicycle needs

By EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Elis Giannini looked up sadly from his lawn chair and stared in the direction of State Street. He said Geneva used to be full of ma-and-pa shops.

“You didn’t refer to the store by its name, but rather the owner,” Giannini explained. “Oh, we’re going to the Danielson’s or the Scoglin’s,” he said with heavy nostalgia in his gruff voice.

“I’ve been on this … corner all my life,” Giannini said, referring to his bicycle shop, Geneva Cycle, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next April.

Giannini and his bicycle shop, at 12 E. State St., represents a generation that, according to Giannini, was less intoxicated with the desire for instant gratification than today’s society. The 74-year-old works by himself and only opens his shop for about 25 hours a week. He said a lot of his bicycles are not made, gesturing to a back room packed with boxes waiting to be assembled. Giannini said if he does not have a customer’s size or model built, he will work into the morning to complete the bicycle.

But he said that tomorrow is sometimes not soon enough for today’s customers.

However, the Geneva native did not always sell bicycles to Tri-City-area and other customers. Giannini got his business background selling motorbikes.

At 17, Giannini moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Giannini’s interest in motorbikes grew after his friends and he spent hours riding a Harley Hummer over dirt construction hills near a new dorm the college was building, he said.

moving to a New Hampshire school, he discovered ice racing, he said.

“I heard this ‘braaap’ ‘braaap,’ and they were having an ice race on the [bloody] lake!” Giannini said. “I saw all those New Hampshire farmers racing around, and I thought, ‘I can do that.’ ” The second time Giannini raced, he placed second in the New England Ice Racing Championship, he said. He raced on and off in all levels of competition until he was 65.

In 1965, Giannini opened his shop in the same building that he resides in now, which he bought in 1976 for $130,000.

He said his plan was to become a Ducati dealer in order to get discounts on motorbike

parts.

As for selling bicycles, “I was tricked into it,” Giannini said chuckling.

Giannini inquired about getting a few personal bicycles from one his of motorbike distributors. The distributor also gave him 10 bicycles that he could choose to sell or return after three months.

With the addition of the Fox River bicycle trail fostering bicycle appreciation and increase in demand, Giannini sold 30 bicycles in 90 days.

From then on, he changed his business plan, and he now sells bicycles from Fuji, Raleigh and KHS. Giannini said he enjoys working on bicycles and teaching people about how they work. He also said he buys older models and sells them at competitive prices, saying “that’s the niche I have found and exploited.”

He said he tries to educate customers on what they are looking for and what type of bicycle will meet their need, and he said this is what sets

him apart from the shops with “shiny floors and big glass walls.”

“The ma-and-pa shops cared about you … it’s the kind of shop that was cool, when I started racing,” Giannini said.

Giannini said the ma-andpa structure and relaxed atmosphere at his shop allows him to run the business on his own terms and makes him and – he hopes – customers comfortable. He said it is like the kind of shop members of his generation went to when they needed reliable service or products.

He still gets in around 100 miles a week on the bicycle, Giannini said, grinning at his artificial knees. With an artificial shoulder and titanium plates in his face to match, Giannini said his long-term goal was to stay healthy and avoid crashing.

“I don’t see myself doing this at 80, but – you know – I said that when I was 55 about retiring at 60 years old,” Giannini said.

Rowing Club shares potential with city council

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Rowing Club on Monday shared its growth and its future goals with the St. Charles City Council.

The nonprofit organization serves those ages 15 to 18 with an interest in rowing, said Chris Meldrum, the club’s founder and juniors director.

The group has grown from two members during its 2013 launch to 40 as of Wednesday.

“We go all over the country and represent St. Charles,” Meldrum said. “It’s a pretty cool sport.”

The group has members from as far north as Barrington, as far east as Hinsdale, and as far south as Naperville, Meldrum said. While group members are used to traveling to multiple states to row in competitions, also known as regattas, the orga-

nization hopes to one day host an Illinois state rowing championship on the Fox River.

“It would be a tremendous opportunity to have that option available,” she said.

Meldrum said there would need to be more infrastructure on the Fox River, including a dock, to hold such a large event. If it ever happens, St. Charles would be host to teams from all across Illinois.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said the city would embrace having such an event held within its boundaries.

The Rowing Club joins the Active River Project Task Force and RowAmerica among the groups that see a strong future in the Fox River, he said.

The task force, comprised of members from the St. Charles Park District, the City of St. Charles, the Kane County Forest Preserve and the St. Charles River Corridor Foundation, hold regular

Monday meetings. RowAmerica, a national rowing company, plans to invest $2 million

into a project that would include building a boathouse in Ferson Creek Park, according

ALWAYS BY HER SIDE Assistance dog helping Batavia woman with her independence

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Blair, a black Labrador retriever, was laying quietly at Rochelle Byrd’s feet in the darkened theater at Randall 15 IMAX in Batavia, ready to help her with any task.

Byrd, 24, was born with cerebral palsy, and she uses a wheelchair for mobility.

Blair is Byrd’s assistance dog.

Blair was trained at the Ohio-based Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit provider of trained assistance dogs for children, adults and veterans with physical disabilities.

“The dogs know approximately 40 commands when they graduate from the program,” Byrd said. “She does not like to do things wrong, and she gets upset when she doesn’t do them right.”

A few minutes earlier, Blair pushed the automatic door to the Randall 15 open for Byrd and gave her money to the cashier. Blair is well known to the staff at Randall 15, since Byrd is a movie buff.

“We have multiple people who come in with service dogs,” said Anne Kaufmann, the Randall 15 assistant manager. “We have never had a single issue with a service dog. Our staff are acquainted with the process.”

In fact, Kaufmann said the service dogs help to raise the spirits of fellow theatergoers.

She said “it makes people happy when they see an animal helping somebody.”

Blair is always at Byrd’s side.

“It is kind of like having an attendant, but it is a dog,” Byrd said.

Byrd was a junior at Batavia High School when she received her first assistance dog, which retired recently.

Byrd said the dog was getting tired, adding, “he couldn’t

In February, Byrd went to Canine Companions’ North Central Regional facility in Delaware, Ohio, to complete two weeks of team training.

Participants are matched with a dog, and they learn to work effectively together.

“The first three days, we work with all the dogs that are going to be potential matches,” Byrd said. “On the third

day, we’re matched with the dog that they think we are going to have, and then we work with them the rest of the two weeks.”

Byrd was matched with Blair, and she said she is happy with the match. Byrd said Blair “wants to learn new things.”

“She learns very, very fast,” Byrd said. “For example, it took my first dog about two weeks to learn how to take my socks off. It took Blair about four days.”

said. “I didn’t have a dog for about four months, and I noticed I had some pretty severe anxiety going into public without the dog.”

Blair helps with pain management, as well. Byrd also suffers from scoliosis and said she has “pretty severe back pain at times.”

“At night, I will have her get in the bed with me and lay with me, and it really helps the pain,” Byrd said.

Assistance dogs are allowed to go anywhere the public is allowed, she said.

Getting an assistance dog opened a new world to Byrd, both in helping her with different tasks, as well as socially.

“I definitely noticed kids coming up to me more and talking to me when I had the dog, versus a human aide,” she said. “People would come up to me more and start conversations and smile at me as they’re walking by, instead of staring and frowning.”

Her mother, Gretchen Byrd, said she also noticed the difference. She said people will be “looking at the dog, and they’re not looking at the wheelchair and all that.”

At the age of 89, former Kane County auditor Gerald Morrow is still full of energy.

“I don’t want to just sit around,” said Morrow, a resident at Plum Landing retirement community in Aurora.

“I would like a touch of adventure.”

He got an adventure last weekend when he decided to go skydiving with six of his grandchildren. The skydiving trip was an early Christmas gift for his grandchildren.

“Christmas Day happens to be my birthday,” Morrow said. “I figured for the grandchildren, I would give them a Christmas gift. It had to be something of interest for the kids.”

Morrow and his grandchildren – Anna and Caroline Olson, Hannah and Joe Guimont, and Mitchell and Will Summitt – went to Baldwin, Wisconsin, on Saturday to jump with a skydiving group. The last time Morrow had jumped out of a plane was when he was a World War II paratrooper.

Batavia aldermen recommend approval of Speedway plans Gas station to be located at Wilson Street and Kirk Road “You could be losing that revenue to neighboring communities, such as Aurora.”

Speedway wants to build a 4,608-square-foot retail store that would be open 24 hours a day as part of the project.

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting unanimously recommended approval of the project.

Speedway had requested a variance to allow outdoor retail sales and merchandise display to be located not adjacent to the building. Aldermen approved the plans without the variance.

The recommendation now will go on to the full City Council for review.

“This intersection has great demographics,” Rich Yost, division project manager for Speedway, told aldermen.

Yost said the station is expected to generate $250,000 a year in sales tax revenues for the city. There are no gas stations along that stretch of Kirk Road in Batavia.

“You could be losing that revenue to neighboring communities, such as Aurora,” Yost said.

One resident who lives near the intersection voiced concerns the station would increase traffic in his neighborhood.

He said the station would

be better suited further north, such as at the intersection of Fabyan Parkway and Kirk Road.

Kane County has jurisdiction over the county.

The Kane County Division of Transportation has indicated that several intersection improvements are planned as part of the project, including widened pavements, right-turn lanes approaching Wilson Street and the Kirk Road ingress, lengthening of the southbound Kirk Road left-turn lane at Wilson, installation of a new traffic signal, and accessible crosswalks with pedestrian/bike push buttons and countdown timers.

Police say death at Batavia Apartments complex was result of domestic dispute

Kevin Bretz had testified that Baines told him she was bipolar after she was told she was being charged with first-degree murder.

Police responding to the initial incident in 2012 found two women, one of them Baines, struggling with each other at the bottom of a stairwell. Officers said they later found three knives in the hallway where the women had been struggling.

“Evidence in this case points to [Baines] being in possession of three knives before the stabbing of Jackson, and being in possession of one knife at the time that Jackson was stabbed,” according to court records.

After conducting a field investigation, police said they were able to determine the incident occurred as a result of a domestic dispute between the victim and Baines.

Baines remains in the Kane County Jail on a $750,000 bail. She has been in custody for more than 800 days.

A status hearing is set for Aug. 21.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles on Wednesday ruled against a motion by the defense attorney for a woman charged in a stabbing death at the Batavia Apartments complex in 2012 that her client didn’t understand her Miranda rights before being interviewed by Batavia police.

“No evidence was presented that she did not understand those rights,” Boles said in her ruling.

“She voluntarily waived her Miranda rights in each of these four Latoya Baines interviews.”

Latoya Baines, 27, who lived at the Batavia Apartments complex at the time of the stabbing, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the April 30, 2012, stabbing death of Chicago resident Gerald J. Jackson, 25. Police said the stabbing was the result of a domestic dispute.

Baines’ defense attorney, Sandra Byrd, had filed a motion seeking to suppress evidence obtained through four interviews that Batavia police had with Baines. During the interviews, Baines told police that she had a knife in her hand, but she did not confess to the murder, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Christine Bayer said on Wednesday after the court hearing.

Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, in the Nov. 4 election, will be a guest on the Norman Goldman radio show at 5:30 p.m. Friday to talk about a bill that bans the practice of horse soring, a campaign spokesman said.

The show is broadcast on 92.5-FM at 8:20 a.m.

Soring involves injuring the front legs and hooves of Tennessee Walking horses and other breeds with high gaits to force them to step higher. Although already il-

legal, the Prevent All Soring Tactics Act, House Resolution 1518, would increase enforcement and penalties for those who do it.

Hultgren is one of two Illinois Congressmen who are not co-sponsoring the bill, which has wide bipartisan support. Anderson was critical of Hultgren not supporting the bill, which is currently stalled in a house committee.

In a letter to a constituent seeking his support, Hultgren said he would keep it in mind if the bill ever comes up for a vote. A Hultgren campaign spokesman said the congressman’s primary focus right now is jobs.

Mother’s Pancake House is moving into 3755 E. Main St. in St. Charles, its owner Hasnaa Hussein said Wednesday.

The breakfast and lunch restaurant has a location at 2290 W. Galena Blvd. in Aurora.

Hussein was interested in expanding and heard from a St. Charles Chamber of Commerce friend that the North Avenue Charhouse property was open. The charhouse closed for business after June 16 because its owner, Peter Lambropolous, wanted to retire, his son, Chris said Tuesday.

Hussein said she is excited about coming to St. Charles and will divide her time between the two restaurants to make sure customers are satisfied.

She will have managers at both locations to take care of operations as well.

Mother’s Pancake House is hiring waiters, busboys and dishwashers for its second location at 3755 E. Main St. in St. Charles. Applicants can pick up paperwork at the restaurant when it is open for renovations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We want to surprise St. Charles,” Hussein said. “I want to have good food, good prices and good service, too.”

Hussein said the St. Charles location is currently undergoing renovations before its grand opening. Changes include converting the Charhouse bar to a coffee counter and the addition of three large TVs in the restaurant’s back meeting room.

Customers can expect the same plentiful portions offered at the Aurora Mother’s location. The St. Charles location is in a larger building than the Aurora location, Hussein said.

“We have everything homemade. We do fresh eggs every day, everything fresh,” Hussein said.

Rick Nagel, a Geneva resident with a journalism background, is spearheading the Kane County Connects initiative, which began under different leadership in the summer of 2013.

The social media connection program aims to engage people with county government and to provide them with information they can use, such as road closures.

Since his last update to County Board members in May, Nagel said the initiative’s total reach has grown to about 13,000 – a number that

includes about 3,100 followers on WordPress, more than 1,600 on Facebook and 171 on Twitter.

Additionally, he said, the WordPress site had more than 17,700 visitors and more than 50,600 page views in July.

“I cannot express how happy I am with these numbers,” he told the Executive Committee on Wednesday.

Kane County Connects accepts user-generated content, Nagel said, encouraging board members to submit items.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen told the committee members that Kane County Connects will become more valuable the more they use it.

“This is a wonderful tool to describe the initiatives and work you’re doing,” Lauzen said.

Color vision deficiency (“color blindness”), an inherited trait, is much more common among boys than it is among girls since the red and green pigment genes involved in color vision are located on the X chromosome. Beyond that, recent research also reveals that color vision deficiency afflicts Caucasian boys at three times the rate of African-American boys. Among children between the ages of 37 and 72 months, 5.6% of Caucasian boys were “color blind” compared with 1.6% of African-American boys. In the same age group, Asian boys had the second highest percentage (3.1%), followed by Hispanic boys (2.6%). The overall prevalence of color vision deficiency is about 2% (59 boys and 4 girls out of the 4,005 children tested).

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With Kane County needing to close a $2 million gap in next year’s proposed general fund, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick expects to see changes this month as various departments and offices re-evaluate their initial requests.

“We hope there will be significant progress made in the

month of August,” Onzick told the Executive Committee on Wednesday.

Every county department and office has been asked to review their budget proposals and should look for ways to obtain efficiencies and reduce or postpone spending, he said. He noted requests for additional personnel should be justified.

Several officials – including the sheriff, public defender and auditor – have budgeted

for additional staff.

Other unforeseen costs contributing to the $2 million potential shortfall include utilities increases and increases in payroll and benefits for existing staff, Onzick said.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the Executive Committee – which comprises the chairmen of the board’s standing committees – is a group the county turns to for guidance.

He said he knows it can be difficult as committee chairmen to say no to requests.

“I understand how hard it is,” Lauzen said, calling it the “cost of leadership.”

The 2015 budget review is set to continue Friday when the Judicial and Public Safe-

ty Committee meets. The coroner, public defender, circuit clerk, state’s attorney, chief judge and sheriff are among the officials who report to that committee.

Approval of the budget is planned for November, Onzick said.

Movement on Medicare THE WASHINGTON POST For years, lawmakers, policy experts and journalists have fretted about the explosive growth of health care spending.

Lately, though, the situation has quietly been improving – as the most recent government data released last week again confirmed. The trustees of Social Security and Medicare reported that the latter program should have enough money in its hospital insurance trust fund to last through 2030 – four years longer than they projected last year and 13 years longer than projected in 2009.

The Congressional Budget Office’s updated estimate of long-term federal spending on major health programs (Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Obamcare health care exchange subsidies) would equal 8 percent of GDP in 2039 – 1.6 percentage points, or about 15 percent, less than the 9.6 percent the agency projected in 2010. It’s now 4.8 percent of GDP. In short, the curve may not have bent yet, but it is flattening. The question of precisely how and why is a contentious one, like almost every other issue in Washington.

Some of the Medicare slowdown might be attributable to curbs on hospital readmissions caused by President Barack Obama’s health care reform, but the law is still too new to explain all – or even most – of the cost moderation. Indeed, economists see the slowdown in health spending, public and private, as a puzzle, although the growth rate does seem to ebb and flow with overall economic growth.

Economist Louise Sheiner of the Brookings Institution argues in a forthcoming working paper that the business cycle accounts for much of the recent slowdown in overall health spending – but not what she calls the “dramatic” easing of Medicare spending specifically.

The real issue is how to respond to this unexpected and unexplained good news. No doubt the path of least resistance, politically, would be to pocket the recent gains in Medicare’s life expectancy and postpone systemic reform, perhaps on the theory that such changes must await perfect understanding of the cost-moderation trend. On the other hand, if the sustainability of federal health programs is a slightly less daunting problem than it seemed, it might be less painful to solve, too – so why not get on with it?

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

A look at how to write this column Although no one has actually asked me, I know hundreds – no thousands – of you loyal readers are just dying to know my secret to writing such an engaging and witty column every week. I’ve decided that I’d give you the inside scoop on how I pull it off.

Every column has to have an idea – an inspiration for every letter that I type. It can be a funny thing that happened to me that week, or something bigger that I’ve been thinking about for a while. (Can you tell I didn’t have a good idea for this one?)

My columns all usually have a similar structure: the hook, an exposition, a middle and a meaningful – yet clever – ending that ties up all the loose ends.

I start the actual writing process by composing all of the thoughts that I have off of the top of my head. As the paragraphs form, I usually am impressed at how easy the words come out.

Then I hit the 300-word count slump. In order to properly fit this opinion page, my column has to be between 500 and 550 words; the

LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman freeze-up happens just over halfway, so I struggle for more things to say. To help cure my writer’s block, I reread what I’ve written – adding filler words where I can – and try to add a paragraph or two.

Occasionally, when it’s really bad, I give it a break or ask my mom for some help.

Another important part of every column is the deadline. This occasionally (or always) helps to form the direction of my column, forcing me to build it up in some spots and scrap other sections completely. But definitely not because I procrastinate at all. I just get really anxious to turn it in early for extra credit and stuff.

Once my work is a sufficient length, I copy on my tag at the very end, write an intriguing headline and double check my formatting: double spaces between paragraphs, proper punctuation and my name

in all caps at the head. Pretty soon, it’s off to my editor via the Internet! I usually never see the column again. The day it’s in print, my parents tell me that they enjoyed it, and I thank them, but I never read it myself. Call it crazy, but it’s weird looking at it the way that everyone else does; I prefer to read it on my laptop throughout the many changes I make. Besides, I do not enjoy having my oh-so charming headshot stare me down in the morning.

The powers that be at the Kane County Chronicle have made it pretty easy for a teenager like me to write a column; almost anyone could do it. It’s a great experience for young writers (cough, cough, future high school columnists), and I’m so glad I’ve made it work with my writing style.

So what Soboj and his wife, Christina, try to do with Bulldog’s and their adjacent business, North Island Sandwich Shoppe, is to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack.

“We don’t try to compete with Subway,” Soboj said.

Soboj runs Bulldog’s, located at 32 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia, and his wife owns and operates North Island Sandwich Shoppe. Bulldog’s opened in 2009 and is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month.

North Island Sandwich Shoppe opened in 2011.

One way North Island Sandwich Shoppe tries to set itself apart is through the meats on its deli sandwiches. It serves Boar’s Head luncheon meats.

Soboj said he first was introduced to Boar’s Head by a Bulldog’s employee before North Island Sandwich Shoppe opened. He was instantly sold.

“One bite was all it took,” he said. “I hate luncheon meat, but I will eat this stuff. It is all gluten free and is also approved by the American Heart Association.”

North Aurora resident Peter Scholten was at the North Island Sandwich Shoppe recently picking up a chicken salad sandwich for his wife, Judi.

“She is on a dairy-free, gluten-free diet,” Scholten said.

“Most fast-food places are not providing gluten-free options.”

Scholten is a regular customer at Bulldog’s and North Island Sandwich Shoppe.

“They are not stingy on putting stuff in your sandwich,” he said. “They are reasonably priced.”

North Island Sandwich Shoppe also started serving pizza more than a year ago after a Pizza Hut restaurant closed a couple of doors down from the shop.

“We get a lot of compliments on our pizza,” Soboj said. “We are the only pizzeria that uses Grande cheese. It’s the best mozzarella cheese you can buy.

It’s in a class all by itself.”

North Island Sandwich Shoppe also boasts a number of desserts made by Soboj’s wife, including marshmallow treats, lemon bars and cookies.

Gluten-free cookies also are available.

Bulldog’s Red Hots menu also provides plenty of options, including homemade Italian beef, grilled chicken breast, hot dogs and burgers.

To celebrate its five-year anniversary, the restaurant will sell 99-cent hot dogs from Friday, Aug. 22, to Sunday, Aug. 24.

The name Bulldog’s comes from the mascot name for the Batavia High School athletic teams. The restaurant also is community-minded and supports local teams in various ways.

“We’re also at all the local festivals,” Soboj said. “You try to be as visible as humanly possible.”

While Bulldog’s and North Island Sandwich Shoppe continue to gain customers, Soboj admitted that it’s been a struggle.

“The first year was very challenging,” he said. “We didn’t know if we would make it the first year. For the first year, I didn’t take a paycheck.”

But that hard work has paid off.

“I still work 75 hours a week, but the store is finally on the map now,” Soboj said. “We are well known in Batavia.”

“The elevation is fantastic for temperature,” winemaker Daniel Daou said. “At 96 degrees vines go into survival mode and shut down and stop producing sugar,” Daou said.

“Last summer only five days on the mountain reached 100 degrees, while downtown they routinely reach 100 degrees.”

With 100 percent calcarous clay soil, a vibrant minerality is present in the entire portfolio of Daou wines. Daou never presses fruit because he said he favors the “silky, gentle wellintegrated tannins” of free run juice.

“Making wine from fruit grown in our soil is a pleasure,” said Daou, who has used the only To Kalon and Clone 338 cabernet sauvignon clones in Paso Robles because of the low yields and intense fruit they provide.

Forget “The Mighty Ducks” and their roster dotted with female players in the 1992 Disney original and two sequels.

Geneva hockey player Alyssa Jacobsen prefers hockey movies depicting events that actually occurred, which is why she and her younger brother, Evan, often watch “Miracle,” the story of the 1980 U.S. men’s Olympic team.

“It’s fun to watch,” Jacobsen said. “It’s inspirational.”

A more contemporary example who motivates Jacobsen?

U.S. women’s national team defenseman Megan Bozek, who hails from Buffalo Grove.

GENEVA – Fox Valley Hawks uniform regulations stipulate that each of the high school hockey co-op’s players use black helmets.

For Geneva freshman Alyssa Jacobsen, that requirement triggered a wardrobe change.

She always sported a pink helmet after renewing interest in the sport a few years ago.

“That’s how you could always know,” said her mother, Kim. “Now, it’s just the ponytail hanging down the back.”

A few of Jacobsen’s male teammates-to-be actually sport long locks of their own, which would seem to be a score for assimilation. Accustomed to being the only girl on the ice in her developmental days,

Jacobsen is eager to skate on equal footing with a team also comprised of players from St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Batavia and Kaneland.

“I just think it’s fun. You get to meet new people and see a different side of the game, I think, than if I was playing with all girls,” Jacobsen said.

“It can be intimidating at times, but I think it’s definitely pushed me to work harder.”

Jacobsen received her hockey orientation as a child in Naperville, accepting some friends’ invitation to join them in a game on a nearby pond.

Until then, she only had ice skated recreationally, the latest in a long list of athletic exploits growing up.

Shortly after that early taste, her younger brother,

Evan – now a seventh-grader at Geneva Middle School North – began playing hockey.

What followed was a case of obsession by osmosis.

“Watching him play, I’ve been to countless games, obviously, with him,” Jacobsen said. “He really just got me into it. I really have to give the credit to him. I just thought it would be fun to start.”

The Hawks, based in Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena, will be Jacobsen’s first competitive team. For the past few years, she accompanied her brother to St. Charles’ Jet Hockey Training Arena, either for 3-on-3 Sunday scrimmages or weekday stick and puck workouts on the facility’s studio-sized ice surface.

Kaneland alumni Ty Hamer, Drew Peters and Bobby Thorson helped the Crystal Lake Cardinals summer baseball team take preventative action in last weekend’s Toledo, Ohio water scare.

Before city officials urged residents to avoid their faucets because of a reported contaminant, the trio already was adept in run differential.

In fact, that’s how Crystal Lake emerged with the National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series title after a shortened tournament in Toledo.

With Saturday’s bracket play and Sunday’s championship canceled, Crystal Lake won the 16-team title via tiebreaker after outscoring opponents, Bobby Thorson 39-2, in three pool victories. The tournament’s only other unbeaten team, the River City (Michigan) Rapids, outscored opponents, 37-10.

Teams were notified of the ruling this week. While Crystal Lake players understood the events at hand, that still didn’t completely temper frustrations.

“You never thought that would be the reason that we were having to head home early,” said Peters, a left-handed pitcher. “It was almost worse than losing, basically.”

The Kaneland trio still made the short trip a productive one. Thorson, recovered from a torn ACL he suffered with the Cardinals in 2013, earned tournament MVP honors as a right-hander and corner infielder.

Five other Cardinals, including Hamer, a righty, joined Thorson on the all-tournament team, giving Crystal Lake a Series-high six honorees.

That’s the ultimate tournament legacy for the Cardinals, even if the trip seemed to take a Murphy’s Law tack at times.

The bus transporting the Cardinals from Crystal Lake to Toledo arrived late. Once the team reached its destination, it had to check into a different hotel when the rooms the Cardinals thought they had booked already were rented.

A few hours before the Cardinals’ scheduled bracket play opener against Orville’s (New York) at 9 a.m. Saturday, tournament officials announced the rest of the Series was canceled.

“We knew it was really unfortunate timing,” Peters said.

“Everything was unfortunate timing.”

Except for one matter, that is. With Thorson (Campbell) and Hamer (Nebraska-Omaha) both approaching their senior collegiate seasons, this summer marked the last time Peters could play alongside the former Knights on a college team.

“This was a good opportunity to play with both of them, and I’m really glad I did it,” Peters said.

Peters, who spent the past two seasons at Elgin Community College, will take a fulltime spot on Bradley’s fall roster in a bid to join the team as a junior in the spring of 2015.

Shortly after returning home from Toledo, he traveled to sign with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters for the final week of the collegiate Northwoods League season.

“Just to keep throwing and get my work in,” Peters said.

In February, Alyssa Jacobsen enjoyed every player’s dream, as hockey provided a chance to play organized hooky.

Knowing her pupil’s penchant for pucks, Geneva Middle School North math teacher Val Demich allowed Jacobsen to head to the school office to watch part of the Olympic women’s hockey gold medal game between the United States and Canada.

Nearly six months later, the memory of the Americans’ loss still stings. The U.S. squandered a 2-0 lead with 3:26 to play and lost in overtime.

“That was horrible,” Jacobsen said.

Consider that the rare occurrence of Jacobsen speaking negatively about hockey.

“This is going to be quite a change,” she said, “but I’m excited to come play here.”

A veteran of every position but goaltender, Jacobsen calls defense her favorite but acknowledges things could change with the Hawks. For one, she stands only 5-foot-5 on skates. For another, she’s about to transition into a faster, more physical brand of hockey on a full rink.

Jacobsen has harnessed her feel for the game during the Hawks’ bi-weekly summer program, designed to bolster players’ skills ahead of this month’s fall evaluations that determine 2014-15 rosters. The workouts alternate between Fox Valley and her old stomping grounds, the Jet Hockey training center.

“I wanted to get better playing for Jet Hockey,” Jacobsen said, “but really, I think in the past few weeks, playing with the Hawks has really been kind of like a wake-up call. Saying, you know, ‘This is really what I want to do. I really want to work hard and get better.’ ” Early in her daughter’s career, Kim Jacobsen leveled with her about the importance of maintaining determination and a steady work ethic.

“I think that’s been the biggest challenge for her is just when she comes in as a girl already, you automatically have this stigma of, ‘Oh, here comes this chick in a pink helmet, she’s going to be like a figure skater. What’s she doing on the team?’ ” Kim Jacobsen said. “And I told her, I said it’s just a challenge you’re going to have to overcome. And you just almost feel like you have

As pro football deals with its woman problem, the National Basketball Association is showing everyone how it’s done.

Less than a week after the National Basketball Players Association elected Michele Roberts as the first woman to head a professional sports union, the San Antonio Spurs have hired the first female as a full-time coach in the NBA. Becky Hammon will join the bench of the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant as the defending champions enter next season.

The 37-year-old is a WNBA veteran, having played for the San Antonio Stars for 16 years, retiring with the seventh-most points and sixth-most games played in league history.

The NBA is continuing an encouraging trend investing in its female talent both on and off the court.

The NBA is far and away the most successfully diverse league in professional sports, outpacing the NFL and MLB in both race and gender hiring practices.

Lakers president Jeanie Buss was already one of the most important women in sports before Roberts and Hammon rose to challenge that title.

What many commentators miss, however, is that Hammon’s promotion continues the line of women rising the ranks of the NBA while reinforcing that women’s basketball should be taken seriously. Hammon’s qualifications to coach in the NBA are largely based on her experience playing professional basketball herself, an acknowledgment and recognition of the skills learned in the WNBA. The WNBA is often maligned for what is considered a lower level of play – a smaller ball, a shorter threepoint line – but the NBA has

embarked on a concerted effort to legitimize its female brethren to basketball fans of all stripes.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is among those who have praised Hammon’s basketball IQ, but her road to the NBA was paved by pioneers such as Nancy Lieberman, who became the head coach of the Texas Legends in the NBA’s developmental league in 2009.

There was also Lisa Boyer, who worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2001-02.

The Spurs’ latest hire goes a long way to dispel whatever stereotypes still exist around a woman’s capacity to comprehend the game, while perhaps putting to rest the question of whether a female coach can earn the respect of her male players.

In fact, a 2012 study by Harvard Business Review suggests that women might actually be more effective leaders than men, despite facing tougher expectations to prove themselves.

This isn’t some Battle of the Sexes, anything-you-cando-I-can-do publicity stunt.

This is a historic move by the Spurs, a progressive organization with a reputation for turning innovation into success – their roster of foreign-born players was also controversial until it started winning rings. As Hammon put it, physical differences will likely always separate men and women on the court, “but when it comes to things of the mind, things like coaching, game-planning, coming up with offensive and defensive schemes, there’s no reason why a woman couldn’t be in the mix.”

As women continue to break down barriers in business, politics, and culture, the Spurs have signaled that a basketball team with much at stake has something to gain from a woman on the bench.

Focus on newcomers in exhibition opener

“It should make people in the minors hungrier, and even us hungrier to get these guys up here,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said of Baez’s promotion, which might be even more heralded than Rizzo’s two years ago. “With Javy, he could spark us. That’s a lot of home runs he could provide if he gets in a groove.”

Realistically, the Cubs don’t expect much more of Baseball America’s seventh-ranked prospect than the kind of ups and downs they saw throughout his 1-for-6, three-strikeout debut.

“If Javy follows the normal track record for very talented 21-year-old big-leaguers, he’s going to struggle in certain elements of his game,” team president Theo Epstein said.

“And that should be expected. That should be part of the learning process and part of his

development, which continues in the big leagues. That said, I don’t think Javy is someone who needs to be handled with kid gloves. Javy in some ways is baseball mature beyond his years and is not someone we have to be delicate with.”

Baez, who has tended to struggle early at each new level, will be in the lineup daily, at second base, for the final two months of the season, the Cubs say, and will be more prepared to succeed from the start next April.

Baez said he didn’t know what to expect facing bigleague pitchers every day.

“I’ll just try to [do] as much as I can,” he said, acknowledging he plans to swing hard.

“Oh, yeah. I always swing big – swing hard.”

He was caught off guard, he said, by Monday’s early wakeup call from Iowa manager Marty Pevey to tell him of the promotion.

“I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ ” he said. “Then I realized I was really going to the big leagues, so I got really ex-

cited, called my mom, told my brother, and everybody started jumping around and crying.”

Sort of like some of his new Cubs teammates.

“Very exciting,” Rizzo said.

“It’s a good step, for everyone here, for the entire organization.”

Epstein put the brakes on suggestions that any kind of top-talent pipeline is suddenly about to gush.

“We’re not here to make pronouncements or sort of look at deeper meaning,” Epstein said. “But I’d be blind if I didn’t recognize that there are a lot of nice things going on in this organization and that there are a lot of reasons for optimism.

And there is light at the end of the tunnel. We have a lot of talent moving through our system and getting up to the big-league level. That provides us opportunities in the near future and the distant future to make it count and to win.

“So we’re excited about that even as we recognize there is an extraordinary amount of work left to be done.”

Now, Morgan heads into Friday’s Bears preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles as someone fighting for a roster spot. He maintains, however, that he takes this preseason with the same mentality.

“I’ve never felt comfortable in my roster spot. That’s the same way I try to go into everything,” he said after Tuesday’s practice. “I have to make the team. I have to do whatever it takes to make the team. I’m never comfortable.

Jordan Palmer is in a similar situation as he was two years ago, fighting for a spot as a backup quarterback – then, he completed 9 of 13 passes for the Jaguars.

Last preseason, he only had the finale to make an impression.

“When Friday rolls around, I want to be locked in and show the coaches I can

move the team, get us in and out of the right plays, find the open guy and hit him,” he said. “It’s just another game, really, and I’m excited for the opportunity to show the coaches that I can do that.”

Ryan Mundy began last preseason as the No. 3 safety with the Giants. Now, he’s squarely in the competition to start for the Bears. Like Morgan, Mundy said he won’t let the different roster situation facing him affect his focus for Friday.

“I’m highly intrinsically motivated. Regardless of the situation that’s going on around me, my motivation was always going to be high coming into this opportunity,” Mundy said. “I’m a hard worker. I’m just excited to be here and can’t wait to get out there and play on Friday.”

The players won’t admit it, but the pressure that always comes with trying to make a

53-man roster will be elevated under the Soldier Field lights Friday, as Bears fans – and most importantly, the coaching staff – get their first chance to see some players in a game situation.

“Going into this preseason game, it’s basically the same thing [as previous seasons],” Morgan said. “I want to go out there, do whatever I’ve got to do, work hard, learn everything, get the game plan down and go out there and put on a show, let my talents speak for themselves on game day.”

Injury update: Kyle Long was held out of Wednesday’s practice with a sore ankle, along with Jordan Mills (foot).

‘Deepsea Challenge 3D’: Cameron goes back to abyss

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post I’m not sure whether the target audience for James Cameron’s “Deepsea Challenge 3D” is aficionados of undersea adventure or aficionados of James Cameron. The movie, which documents the filmmaker’s 2012 expedition – in his own personal submarine – to the deepest point in all of Earth’s oceans, features less 3-D footage of sea cucumbers and exotic octopi than of Cameron’s nose. It’s a movie about exploring the vast, “dark continent” of the ocean’s deepest places (to quote Cameron, who produced and narrates the film) that ends up feeling claustrophobic. Much of it was shot inside a metal sphere the size of a fitness ball.

That’s because that is where Cameron is for much of the movie. He paid for the submersible, christened the Deepsea Challenger, so of course he gets to ride it to the bottom of the Pacific’s Mariana Trench. He also gets to take all the risk.

At nearly 36,000 feet below sea level, the trench is the deepest known point on the planet, and it hadn’t been visited by a manned vehicle since 1960, when Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh piloted the bathyscaphe Trieste to the spot

known as Challenger Deep. The trip is very dangerous, but, admittedly, also pretty exciting.

The “Titanic” director is well known for his underwater exploits, both on screen and off, having visited (and documented) the site of the Titanic more than 30 times and having made the deep-sea thriller “The Abyss” in 1989. Along with footage of those projects, the movie features a dramatized prologue showing a young version of the filmmaker playing, as a boy, in a cardboard box that he imagines to be a submarine.

Despite the personal nature of those scenes, the movie makes it clear that Cameron’s interest in financing a voyage to the bottom of the sea is more than egotism. Scientific advancement is the true goal, in the form of knowledge about how tsunamis are formed and in the discovery of new species of deep-sea life forms.

Yet the film pays scant attention to this stated goal, relegating the discoveries achieved by Cameron’s mission to a brief on-screen title at the very end of the film. Even a scene in which Cameron is shown collecting sediment and rock samples seems perfunctory, as though the work is secondary to how cool it is to be floating around a few miles underwater, manipulating a couple of 3-D cameras on

robotic arms with joysticks.

Speaking of which, those robotic arms give out at one point, having sprung leaks in their hydraulic conduits. Why did this happen? And why was it not anticipated? And what is that scary cracking sound that we hear during one of Cameron’s early practice dives, that sounds like the filmmaker, to use his own words, is about to get “chummed into a meatcloud in about two microseconds” by an implosion of the hull?

The movie doesn’t tell us. It also isn’t clear whether the deaths of the film’s co-director, Andrew Wight, and cameraman Michael deGruy, who were killed in a 2012 helicopter crash, were directly related to the filmmaking or incidental.

Cameron seems certain, however, that Wight and deGruy “would have wanted” him to continue.

Maybe they would have. What is certain is that, even after that tragedy, Cameron has a movie – and a message – to deliver: His heart, if nothing else, will go on.

• “Deepsea Challenge 3D” received two out of four stars. The film is rated PG, containing some crude language and brief disaster images. It runs 90 minutes.

She was wondering if this is normal.

I can tell her that my former husband thought we should have sex five times a week. He kept a calendar of when we had sex that also included who initiated it. I explained to him that I was more than willing to have frequent sex, but that he also had to be an attentive, caring husband.

Our marriage counselor believed he was suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and was probably a diagnosable narcissist. Surprise, surprise! He pronounced our marriage counselor to be inept and divorced me.

Reduce blood-pressure medication though lifestyle changes Dear Doctor K: Is it possible to get off blood pressure-lowering medication through diet and exercise?

Dear Reader: Yes, it is. I’ve seen many patients commit to lifestyle changes and get off blood-pressure medicines entirely. More often, I’ve seen that a commitment to a healthier lifestyle allows people to greatly reduce how much medication they take, even though they still need some medicines to control their blood pressure.

While many people, myself included, would like to not have to take medicines at all, being able to reduce the dose is a big deal. Many of the side effects of medicines are reduced or eliminated by reducing the dose.

Regular exercise is one of the best ways to reduce high blood pressure. Still, it’s important to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise program. If you are taking certain blood pressure medications, you may have to take extra precautions when you exercise. For example, thiazide diuretics slightly lower blood volume, so you may be more prone to dehydration with exercise.

Aerobic exercise, which boosts your heart rate and breathing, is best for lowering blood pressure.

Aim to do 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity activity on

Some resistance training is fine, but don’t strain. Do more repetitions at lighter weights to prevent temporary blood pressure spikes.

Many of my patients have started exercise programs to lose weight. But if they didn’t lose weight, they stopped the exercise.

They thought the only value in exercise was losing weight. They didn’t realize that exercise produces enormous health benefits – with or without weight loss. Regular exercise lowers a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke, diabetes and many common types of cancer.

Good nutrition can also help lower blood pressure. A blood pressure-friendly diet includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains; several servings daily of low-fat dairy products; some fish, poultry, dried beans, nuts and seeds; and minimal red meat, sweets and sugary bever-

ages. Limit your salt intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a table listing lower-sodium alternatives in common food categories.)

You should also aim to: • Attain and maintain a healthy weight. Exercise alone can help drop your blood pressure, and so can weight loss alone, by reducing your calories. But the combination of regular exercise and weight loss is more powerful than either alone.

• Limit alcohol. No more than one drink a day for a woman and no more than two drinks a day for a man.

• Stress less. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing and yoga can help relieve stress.

Lifestyle changes can have a powerful, beneficial effect in lowering your blood pressure and the risk of diseases worsened by high blood pressure – particularly heart disease and stroke. This is not sanctimonious preaching: It’s solid science.

At the bridge table, though, sometimes you must decide between setting your sights high or low. How does that apply to this deal? South is in three no-trump and West leads a fourth-highest spade six. What happens after that?

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade (given the first trick), three hearts, two diamonds and one club. He hopes that the club finesse is working. But even if it loses, West might not find the right defense.

South takes East’s spade jack with his king, leads a heart to dummy’s king, and runs the club 10. It loses, but West is now in a quandary. Who has the spade queen? East would have played the jack at trick one with either only the jack or the queen-jack. And South would have won with his king, whether or not he also had the queen.

If South still has the spade queen and another spade, West needs to shift to a diamond in the hope that his partner can win with the ace and return a spade through South. But if East has the spade queen, that suit can be run now.

Should West play his partner for a queen or an ace?

Do not be greedy; set your sights low. West should cash the spade ace. Perhaps South started with king-queen-doubleton.

Here, though, East should throw (unblock) his queen under partner’s ace. By applying the Rule of Eleven at trick one (11 - 6 = 5), East should know that South started with only one spade higher than the six, the king he has already played.
