‘Spa day’ coming to STC for elephants Fairgrounds site for Carson & Barnes circus pachyderms

By KATIE KULL kkull@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The fairgrounds in Kane County attract a diverse array of events, including the fair, festivals, flea markets and folk art displays. Later this month, it will host some pachyderms – a “spa day” for circus elephants.

The Carson & Barnes Circus elephants will get a treatment from head to toe, including a bath and a pedicure, with the help of the St. Charles Fire Department at 3 p.m. Tuesday at 525 S. Randall Road in St. Charles, according to a news release. The event is free to the public.

“We do [the baths] every day because it’s good for the elephants,” Anitra Babcock, the promotions manager for Carson & Barnes Circus said.

“Elephants out in the wild don’t get this kind of royal treatment.”

There are now contact lenses that make wearers look younger by accentuating a part of the eye that is associated with youth. The “limbal ring” is the line that separates the colored part of the eye (iris) from the white (sclera). The bigger and blacker the limbal rings are, the more attractive the eyes appear to be.

The trouble is that, as we age, limbal rings fade. To counter this age-related effect, contact lenses are available that have a pigment that helps to define the wearer’s limbal ring.

Budget impasse delays federal funding to area County awaits nearly $1.9M in disbursement

By ASHLEY SLOBODA sloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The state’s budget stalemate has prompted Kane County to draft an emergency resolution providing temporary funding for the workforce development program as

it waits for its nearly $1.9 million federal disbursement.

Kane County’s access to the $1,875,807.21 has been cut off because the lack of a state budget is preventing the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity from disbursing the federal workforce development funds to local agencies, according to a report Wednesday by Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick at the Executive Committee meeting.

Brian Pollock, who also leads the Legislative Committee, described the money as “collateral damage” in the state budget impasse.

“This money had zero impact on the state budget,” said Pollock, D-Aurora.

Without the federal funds, the workforce development program would need to suspend services and lay off staff this month, according to Onzick’s report.

To avoid such measures, the Executive Committee

unanimously supported a resolution increasing the line of credit to the Kane County Department of Employment and Education from $250,000 to $1,875,807.21.

Committee members noted the resolution might be moot come Tuesday – the day the County Board will act on it – because of actions in Springfield.

Pollock said the Senate passed a bill this week addressing the appropriated federal funds that the state must process. The House has a hearing Monday,

he said.

“Hopefully, it gets done next week,” he said, but noted it would be good for the county to pass the resolution as a backup.

Pollock – who has talked about building a two-way relationship with lawmakers – said the legislators are getting pressure from “above and below,” as he as spoken with U.S. senators about allocated federal funds not getting to Kane County.

“This didn’t need to happen,” Pollock said, “and they listened.”

HATS WITH HEART Geneva girls knit hats for charity

ENEVA – The clear, oversized plastic storage bag held a cacophony of colors – blue, pink, gray, green, white and yellow – more than 100 hats and headed for a goal of 120.

They will be donated to the Delnor Hospital’s baby nursery, said the hats’ makers, two 11-year-old Geneva girls, Emily Grimes and Molly Howard. They both will start sixth grade in the fall.

The girls don’t knit with needles. Instead, they use a round hat loom, which they’ve been using since October.

“I got the loom for my birthday,” Grimes said.

“I went over to her house one day, and she showed me what she got,” Howard said.

“And we played with it a little bit to figure out how it works.

We combined ideas and came up with a charity.”

Their charity’s name is Hats with Heart, although it does not have a nonprofit status.

Grimes held up a circle with projections where the yarn is worked into a hat.

“They come in all different sizes from newborn baby to adult,” she said of the size of the hat looms.

The girls worked separately and together, as they created hats and amassed them for their big donation.

“We each have our own set [loom], and we each have our own yarn,” Howard said. “We use soft baby yarn.”

Kim Howard, Molly’s mother, is a social worker at Cadence Health, who used to work in Delnor’s nursery.

“All the new babies get a hat, and some of our volunteers make them,” Kim Howard said.

Village amends rules on dead trees

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Residents, along with business and property owners, now will be required to remove only dead trees on their property.

North Aurora village trustees Monday approved new rules regarding what residents, business and property owners are required to do with dead, dying or diseased trees on their property. They previously had been responsible for removing such trees from private property.

Village trustees changed the rules to require residents to be responsible for removing only dead trees. Mike Toth, the village’s community and economic development director, had told trustees the previous rules were difficult and cumbersome to enforce because of a number of factors, including the expertise needed to diagnose a dead, dying or diseased tree.

Village attorney Kevin Drendel stated that state law gives the village the authority to declare dead, dying or diseased trees on private property a nuisance and to enact regulations to address them.

“As with other ordinance enforcement, if a property owner refuses to let the village enter the property for inspection, abatement, etc., then a court order will likely be necessary,” Drendel stated in a memo to village officials.

GENEVA – A woman suspected of theft at the GreenFields senior community ran away from police on Wednesday, Lt. Pat Gengler, a Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, wrote in an email.

The woman was last seen Wednesday afternoon on Keslinger Road west of Randall Road near Delnor Hospital.

She was described as a short white female in her late 30s wearing a yellow top and blue scrubs bottoms, Gengler confirmed in the email.

Someone at GreenFields at 3:24 p.m. Wednesday called police to spot a sighting of the

woman at the facility, located at 0N801 Friendship Way near Geneva, Gengler wrote. When the staff confronted her, she fled the building into a waiting vehicle driven by a male subject and the vehicle headed eastbound on Keslinger Road, he wrote.

A Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a vehicle matching the description of the one that left GreenFields and made a stop on it on Keslinger Road west near the hospital.

The male was taken into custody for questioning, but the woman fled on foot, Gengler wrote.

Two hurt in 4-car crash Wednesday

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two people were transported Wednesday afternoon to Delnor Hospital for minor injuries after a four-car crash in the area of Route 31 and Red Gate Road, officials said.

St. Charles police, fire and EMS were dispatched at 4:03 p.m. Wednesday to the scene of the crash, said Joe Schelstreet, the St. Charles fire chief.

The driver of a car headed south on Route 31 directly south of Fieldcrest Drive suddenly veered into the northbound lane, hitting a northbound vehicle head-on, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief

David Kintz said.

The northbound vehicle spun, hitting another southbound vehicle, and a third southbound vehicle moved off the roadway to avoid the crashes and ended up in a ditch, Kintz said.

Two ambulances transported a total of two drivers from the scene – the driver who veered into the northbound lane and the driver of the vehicle that was hit and spun, according to Kintz.

“We were very lucky that the crashes were minor on this one,” Kintz said.

Kintz said the speed limit in the area of the crash is 45 miles per hour, and that there

were two children who were in the northbound car in the crash who were not injured, he said.

The mother of the children was a passenger in the car and was able to stay with the children after the crash, Kintz said.

The last fire unit cleared the scene at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to Schelstreet, and traffic on Route 31 south of Red Gate Road had to be detoured after the crash.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was later identified as Brian Barnes, 34, of North Aurora, and he was cited for improper lane usage, Sgt. Roger Anderson said.

CHARLES – The Fox Valley Aero Club will hold its 10th annual Festival of Flight starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 22 at its flying field at 3821 Karl Madsen Drive, St. Charles, which is located near the intersection of Route 38 and Peck Road.

A night fly will start at 9 p.m. There is an entrance fee of $5 a person, and children ages 12 and younger are free.

tators can bring their own chairs if desired. Concessions will be available.

Information is available at the Fox Valley Aero Club’s website, www.foxvalleyaero. com. The event will feature radio-controlled aircraft of all types and sizes, as well as helicopters and 3D stunt planes.

There also will be exhibition flights with special aircraft, along with noon air shows. Spectators will see an early dawn patrol of World War I biplanes, a squadron of

World War II fighters and a variety of stunt planes filling the sky with smoke trails.

The club has evolved over the years. It was founded in 1929 under the name Flying Fools, and members flew handlaunched, free-flight gliders and rubber-band powered planes.

In 1979, the club changed its name to Fox Valley Aero Club.

Some of the Fox Valley Aero Club members have been flying for three generations, according to a news release.

STC man gets 10 years for armed robbery, battery to police officer

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man Wednesday pleaded guilty in an armed robbery case and a related aggravated battery case, according to court records.

Jacob M. Fahey, 21, of the 500 block of South 12th Avenue, St. Charles, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the Jan. 4 armed robbery of a St. Charles business, according to the records.

When detectives on Jan. 20 went to question Fahey at his home, he fought with them and later was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, a felony, according to St. Charles police.

Fahey received a three-year prison sentence for the aggravated battery charge, and it

will be served concurrently with his 10-year term. He is eligible for day-to-day credit and could serve as few as five years, according to court records.

Fahey will receive credit for the 195 days he has spent at the Kane County Jail since his arrest, according to court records.

Fahey and Jacob M. Rayshawn M. Fahey Vonperbandt, of the 200 block of North 15th Street, St. Charles, on Jan. 4 went to the Tobacco and Gift Store, 1556 E. Main St., St. Charles, approached a locked display case and attempted to force it open, according to police.

Fahey and Vonperbandt displayed weapons and de-

manded the keys and cellphone from a male shop employee as he tried to call 911.

The men then removed items from the display case and left on foot, according to police.

Vonperbandt later was arrested without incident during a traffic stop in the 200 block of North Fifth Avenue in St. Charles for an unrelated traffic offense, according to police.

Vonperbandt also was charged with armed robbery and as of Wednesday evening remained in the Kane County Jail on a $100,000 bond. His next court date for this case is scheduled for Aug. 13, according to court records.

Savoring the summer If you’ve visited any stores lately, you’ve been inundated with everything from No. 2 pencils and notebook paper to backpacks and binders. Following with American retailers’ tendency to rush through every season, it’s been back-toschool shopping time since the Fourth of July.

With that in mind, I need to bring something to your attention. School starts in just under two weeks. It’s hard to believe that the two and a half months allotted to ice cream, swimming and barbecues are coming to an end, especially since it feels like summer just began.

To say summer has gone by quickly is a huge understatement. The days and weeks have flown by, and looking back, it seems like school just ended yesterday.

I’ve definitely done a lot of cool things over the past two months, like my Mexico missions trip, going to a wedding and relaxing with family and friends. I’ve loved every moment, and in my book, it’s quite possibly been the best summer of my life. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t mind if this season of sunshine and sleeping late lasted forever.

However, we all know that’s not going to happen, and as the days go by, it’s all too obvious that summer is slipping away – in more ways than one. When I was younger, my summer days consisted of playing in the sandbox and going to the local splash park.

I loved running around outside, having playdates with my friends and going to Graham’s in downtown Geneva for a kiddie-size ice cream cone. Back then, summer seemed to last for a blissful eternity.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that the lines

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel between school and summer start to blur more and more. Between my summer English assignments and the summer school class I’ve been taking, I’ve spent a lot of time reading “The Scarlet Letter” and sitting in a classroom immersed in the oh-so-thrilling world of personal finance.

I recognize that as I continue my education, this kind of extra work is necessary and even beneficial. Still, it makes me miss when I was younger and my summer days were 100 percent school-free.

I’ll admit, part of me always looks forward to that first day of school. I love seeing all my friends, starting new classes, meeting my teachers and the general excitement of a fresh start.

But I’m not in a rush for that day to come any faster than it has to. Despite the fact that summer is quickly diminishing, I’m determined to make the most of it. I plan on cramming in as much swimming, relaxing and time with friends as I can these last weeks.

Thank you, summer 2015, for the memories and moments that have changed my life. It’s been, to say the very least, absolutely incredible.

Trump isn’t the problem in Republican debates

By FRANCIS WILKINSON Bloomberg News Republicans have a presidential debate problem. Again.

In the 2012 race, Republican primary candidates debated 20 times. Among Republican leaders, a consensus emerged that the frequency and tenor of the debates, which provided a regular platform for sniping and strong incentives to veer toward the fringe, damaged the party’s eventual nominee, Mitt Romney.

Vowing to keep the 2016 train on the tracks, the RNC changed the rules last year, limiting the number of debates. Fox News, the RNC’s favored network, then restricted the number of candidates who would appear at the first debate tonight. The intention was to keep the most volatile and unviable off the stage. Then Donald Trump happened.

Yet Trump is more a manifestation of the Republicans’ problem than its cause. Republican pollster David Winston, an adviser to House Speaker John Boehner, probably

wasn’t thinking about Trump when he produced a new analysis of the 2012 Republican debates; Trump, after all, made no appearance on 2012 debate stages. But Trumpism was still very much in evidence.

Winston and his co-authors focused not on the quality of debate rhetoric in 2012 but on the categories: “Though Republican voters consistently said [in primary exit polls and survey] that economic issues were their top priority in determining who to vote for, questions about the economy were largely underrepresented throughout the debates.”

Winston has a penchant for viewing political contests through the lens of economic arguments, so his frustration is understandable. But questions on the economy weren’t especially enlightening or contentious in 2012, in part, because they tended to provoke broad agreement among the candidates.Whether Republicans or Democrats take the stage, it’s inevitable that the hottest arguments occur on issues about which a party is most divided. Take immigra-

tion, a topic that accounted for only 7 percent of 2012 GOP debate questions but appeared to do lasting damage to Romney.

Right now, Republican proposals on the issue range from mass deportation (Trump) to a pathway to legalization (Bush). But even if the battle over Trump and immigration receded, other divisive fights would arise. (The Republican elite probably isn’t any more eager to hear Mike Huckabee’s rhetoric on abortion or Ted Cruz’s attacks on fellow Republicans than it is to listen to Trump denigrate Mexicans.)

Ultimately, the Republican debate problem coming to Fox News tonight isn’t about Trump, who would be marginalized in a healthier party.

It isn’t about the number or ground rules of debates. It’s about Republicans. Until one half of the party stops being embarrassed by the words and deeds of the other half, debates will remain an unpleasant experience.

Turf Room receives third Award of Excellence for wine Wine Spectator magazine honors North Aurora restaurant

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Parker Grabowski, owner of The Turf Room restaurant in North Aurora, is happiest when he sees a glass of wine at each table in his restaurant.

Customers at The Turf Room, located at 1033 Kilbery St. in North Aurora, have plenty of wine to choose from. The restaurant has a selection of more than 600 different wines, including 64 wines that are available by the glass. The Turf Room’s specialty is Napa cabernets.

“We probably have close to over 250 cabernets from Napa Valley alone,” Grabowski said. “That’s our little forte we like to do. It matches our food at the restaurant. It’s American eclectic food.”

Once again, the restaurant has earned an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine, which bills itself as the world’s leading authority on wine.

This is the third year The Turf Room has received an Award of Excellence from the magazine after previously receiving the award in 2012 and 2013. The restaurant did not enter last year.

“We were just trying to expand it for a year, really build it, and then apply the next year,” Grabowski said.

The Award of Excellence honors those restaurants that “offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style,” according to the magazine.

The Turf Room and Wildwood restaurant in Geneva were the only restaurants in the area honored this year with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

There are three levels to the magazine’s wine awards. The “two glass” award is the Best of Award of Excellence.

The top award is the “three glass” award, or Grand Award. The Turf Room currently is at the “one glass” level.

and that’s our goal, to get up to that level,” said Grabowski.

Grabowski travels to Napa Valley twice a year to try wines. He believes The Turf Room has one of the most extensive wine lists of any restaurant in Illinois.

“There’s probably only a half-dozen places that have more wines than us,” he said. “We let our customers try a lot of variety of wines that they’ve never heard of, or even been able to try before. We have a lot of wines that are $20 or $25 a glass that are really nice premium wines.”

Grabowski owns Gastronomy Rooms Inc., which operates The Turf Room along with The Saddle Room in Hoffman Estates and The News Room in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Saddle Room also received an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator this year.

By February of next year, Gastronomy Rooms hopes to open its latest restaurant, Hardware, which will be located at the northwest corner of Orchard Road and Oak Street in North Aurora. The gastropub will have a brewery inside of it, Grabowski said.

The hops for the microbrewery will be grown on a two-acre farm outside of the restaurant.

“We will be completely sustainable on our hops probably within two to three years,” he said.

The wheat that is leftover from the brewing process will then be dried and put into breads, pastries and dog bones, Grabowski said. In addition, the building will also house a greenhouse, where herbs, microgreens, tomatoes and lettuce will be grown for the restaurant.

The restaurant will be making as much food as it can, including hot dogs and sausages, as well as curing its own bacon. Bee colonies will pollinate the fruit trees and gardens on the property, he said.

“We’re trying to grow and create as much as we can ourselves, and then use everything we can and not waste anything,” Grabowski said. “You got to use it all.”

The building itself will be constructed out of recycled materials, Grabowski said. A cistern will collect rainwater, which will then be used to water the

greenhouse and the hop gardens.

The restaurant’s name is a reflection of all of the work being put into the effort.

“We’re working much harder to produce our wares,” Grabowski said.

“You can go buy bacon from somebody.

You can go buy sausage from somebody.

We’re doing it all ourselves.”

Once demand exceeds a certain threshold, Grabowski said he plans to construct a separate microbrewery on land adjacent to the restaurant.

North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco said he is excited about the proposed restaurant and believes it will help boost the economic vitality of that corridor.

“Parker obviously does a great job with The Turf Room,” Bosco said.

Montelena Live tells 10-year story of its chardonnay Matt Crafton doesn’t eat grapes nine months out of the year.

The Chateau Montelena winemaker more than makes up for it in the three months leading up to harvest. Grapes have to taste good before the call is made to bring in fruit from the vineyard. The Montelena staff will go as far as making sure 98 of 100 grapes tasted meet their established criteria.

With a history that dates back to 1888, when the chateau was constructed, Montelena is America’s version of a Grand Cru. Monumental events like the 1976 Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting when the 1973 Montelena Chardonnay claimed first place, announced to the world the United States was making outstanding wines.

During an early-July visit, Montelena proudly displayed its historic achievements. Bottles of the 1973 chardonnay and tasting notes from the iconic event are behind glass cases.

But, Montelena isn’t satisfied to rest on its achievements.

At 10 years, Crafton said the Montelena Chardonnay starts to hit its peak. Of the six-bottles tasted, I thought the 2006 showed best upon opening.

“At release it didn’t have this depth and complexity,” said Crafton, who has been working at Montelena for nine years and was named winemaker in 2014. “We think this is what all these wines will turn into – at different points in their evolution, certain pieces – maybe the fruit, aromatics or acidity – dominate. Over time they come into an incredible balance and equilibrium that all seem to hit at the 10-year point.”

There is a very full, round mouth feel. The spice imparted by the oak has peeled away its layers, and in its place is a nutty, Gruyère aged-cheese aroma. There are green peach and snappy red apple flavors.

So good is the Montelena property that even in 2008, a cooler vintage where frost hit during flowering, the wine still showed incredibly well. Baker remembers the exact dates of the frost because they were his first at the winery.

“April 21 and 22 of 2008 is the famous frost,” Baker said. “The

A sudden heat spike right after wineries thinned their canopies in 2010 was disastrous for some in Napa Valley. It looked like a third straight cool vintage, but the 70-degree temperatures that were prevalent throughout August changed abruptly on Aug. 25.

A three-day heat spike brought 100-degree temperatures and panic throughout the valley.

Yet because Montelena opened its canopy conservatively, its vintage survived and made a wine that in a few years will really thrive.

“It’s a real testament to our winemaking team and vineyard manager that have seen this type of weather pattern before,” Crafton said.

Montelena CEO Bo Barrett, whose family purchased the winery in 1972, called the 2011 the best chardonnay Montelena ever made. Crawfton thought the fruit was amazing at harvest.

dessert lounge that can seat 25 to 30 people. Dessert flights, charcuterie, cheese boards and small plates – such as crab and avocado sliders – will be served alongside an array of wine, including varietals from Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park.

“What I am trying to do is use local products, local wine.

And they are certainly one of the best, if not the best, local wine,” said Roby.

As a Guinness World-Record holder for his chocolate-art pursuits, Roby will use the new space to showcase his latest creation: a 21-foot tall chocolate rig that will consistently pump 300 pounds of

white chocolate.

“People are going to be able to enjoy all of these goodies and see this chocolate rig pumping chocolate right in front of their eyes,” Roby said.

“I can’t wait for people to see this baby running.”

With hopes of a grand opening in time for Festival of the Vine in September, Roby said that the unveiling of the new space could be closer to the dates surrounding the Geneva Christmas Walk or Valentine’s Day. “I think it’s going to be a fun place, especially with the holidays coming up now,” Roby said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

Athletic directors have a plan for the heat

By NATE WENDT nwendt@shawmedia.com Heat illness prevention is on the minds of those who work in Kane County Chronicle-area athletic departments as fall sports tryouts start as soon as Monday.

Heat illness, or heat exhaustion, is caused by high temperatures and humidity.

Symptoms include cramps, nausea, heavy sweating and fainting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Heat illness is dangerous and can affect the health and training of athletes.

“First and foremost we make sure the kids are safe,” Kaneland athletic director Peter Goff said.

The athletic departments

follow guidelines used to combat the heat. According to the IHSA Hydration and Heat Regulation guidelines one method is to weigh athletes before and after practice for how much water lost during practice.

Batavia athletic director Dave Andrews uses that method, but on a more prolonged basis.

“We weigh the athletes at the beginning of the season,” Andrews said. “We’ll weigh every now and then if we notice an athlete who [has lost] too much weight.”

Part of fighting heat illness is to have a plan and be ready.

Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer combats heat illness by being prepared for each day.

“The key is to be proac-

tive,” Kafer said. “We’ll send out information to coaches and trainers to help them out and be ahead of the game.”

A lot of what goes into planning ahead is determined by the heat index.

“Each day is based around the heat index,” Kafer said.

“Once it reaches a certain point, we look to reduce the amount of time we practice and incorporate many breaks.”

The heat index, according to the National Weather Service, is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

The National Weather Service then measures the likelihood of heat disorders with prolonged exposure or strenuous activity.

The index has 80 degrees as the lowest temperature to exercise caution. With August temperatures consistently predicted to be in the 80s, each day is going to bring heat illness danger.

There are a variety of ways to combat the heat. One way is more water breaks.

“We make sure our athletes get plenty of food, plenty of water and plenty of breaks, especially when it’s hotter,” Goff said.

Another way is to change the time of practice.

“If we have practice at the hottest time of the day, I’ll get the coaches and the trainers together and we’ll have a discussion and maybe practice later at night,” Andrews said.

Many of the decisions are simpler.

“Most of the time we just use common sense,” Goff said.

Another idea for football is wearing less equipment.

“Depending on the heat, we may have players go without pads on,” Kafer said.

Athletic directors inform their coaches and trainers what to look out for. Goff credited a lot of Kaneland’s heat illness prevention to the school’s trainer, Missy Johnson.

“Our trainer runs it really well. She is really aware,” Goff said.

The trainers aren’t the only ones making sure the athletes are beating the heat. Coaches are taught to keep an eye out on the students, as well.

“Our coaches are wellversed to know what to watch out for,” Kafer said.

“I can tell you that St. Charles and Geneva and Batavia just feel like Fairfield County,” Egan said. “It’s just beautiful. Beautiful towns, really nice people, very welcoming.”

Muse, 33, who was born in Chicago but has been a hockey nomad since, recently moved to St. Charles with his family.

“It’s a great area,” Muse said. “I couldn’t be happier that we’re bringing the team and the organization out there, and also at the same time, I’m extremely excited to bring my young family out there, too. I just think it’s a great community to be a part of. Still, everyday that I drive through, I’m kind of blown away, just everything about it.”

Blackhawks TV analyst and U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer Eddie Olczyk insists he’s not on the United States Hockey League payroll.

He’s simply a proponent of the tier-I junior league with a rich recent history of producing NHL draft picks.

As a Chicago Steel forward, Olczyk’s son, Nick, is part of the USHL, and fans should expect to see his famous father for at least a handful of games at the team’s new home, Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“Oh, yeah. My schedule’s made out once their schedules are out,” Eddie Olczyk said. “Usually, I get to about 20 USHL games a year. … I try to make it out as much as I can.

It just depends on timing and where my schedule happens to be.”

Olczyk and his wife, Diana, have four children, including two others steeped in hockey. Ed Olczyk is an assistant coach at Utica (New York) College, while Tommy Olczyk is a fifth-year senior forward at Penn State.

Consequently, Olczyk has explored several rinks through the years. He has a few recollections of Fox Valley from tournaments and an autograph appearance “way back when.”

“It’s a beautiful rink. I know they’re doing a lot to it right now,” Olczyk said. “I think it’s going to be great for the community. I know how much they support the Kane County Cougars out there, and the support that they get, so hopefully they can do some cross promoting and get the baseball fans out there. Hopefully, just get the support.

There’s nothing like being in a rink when you’ve got a lot of fans in behind you.

Courses hail holes–in–one differently

By JAMES NOKES editorial@kcchronicle.com Sam Bradberry fired off questions like a seasoned reporter.

A few times every summer, the Hughes Creek Golf Club PGA Professional adds duties normally fit for a golf writer to ensure players that hit a hole– in–one at the Elburn course have a memorable experience.

“I really roll out the red carpet when someone comes in after a hole in one,” Bradberry said. “They are so excited. I let them take a minute to realize how tough it is and help them really enjoy it. It’s like I set up my own media tent in the pro shop and ask them questions: ‘Did it bounce in? What kind of ball was it? What club? Where was the wind? What shoes were you wearing?”

To help golfers embrace the moment, Bradberry awards a free round to a golfer that recorded an ace. While he has seven aces in his career, the feat is an elusive challenge and only five golfers have earned a free round this summer at Hughes Creek. It’s an even rarer shot at Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles, which has just one.

Both courses mark the accomplishment, which Golf Digest has statistically tracked for 60 years, in unique ways.

The magazine has calculated the odds of an amateur making an ace at 12,500 to 1, while a low handicap player’s odds drop to 5,000 to 1. A PGA Tour professional has the best chance at a still daunting 2,500 to 1.

“We’re talking about hitting a one-and-a-half inch ball in a four-and-one-half-inch cup that is anywhere from 100, 150 or 200 yards away,” said Pottawatomie assistant pro Bill Ogiego, who is still vying for his first hole in one. “The odds are astronomical. A hole in one is so rare I think players are so astonished they don’t really celebrate.

“There’s an ongoing rumor about the group I play in. If you hit a hole in one you buy everyone in the group a pair of shoes and a drink for everyone in the clubhouse afterwards. No one ever hits a hole in one in the group, though.”

Because the odds of a hole in one are so one-sided against it happening, a tradition has established itself around the event. Golfers are supposed to take the ball out of play, save their scorecard from the round and buy the post-round beverage for everyone in their group. Trophies that hold the ball are widely available at golf stores. Golf ball companies also get in on the act. They will publish a player that used their ball to hit the ace on their website; some even send a bag tag with the date the shot was hit.

Armstrong excels at Western Am

SUGAR GROVE – Lipscomb sophomore Dawson Armstrong continued a torrid start Wednesday to this week’s Western Amateur at Rich Harvest Farms, taking a two-shot lead into today’s final two rounds of stroke play.

Armstrong, who shot an 11-under par 133 over the first two rounds, is two shots ahead of Taylor Funk and Charlie Danielson, relying on a laid back style.

“Have fun. That’s my main thing,” Armstrong said. “This week, I just wanted to take it all in and keep having fun and keep playing small golf. There’s no reason to get angry. Shoot, there’s nothing wrong with this place.

I’m not going to beat myself up for making a bogey or two.”

The opening field of 144 golfers was cut to 56 after Wednesday’s play. After 36 holes of stroke play today, the field will be reduced to 16 members, who’ll begin a match-play tournament Friday.

Some of the top amateur golfers worldwide missed the cut, including defending Western Amateur champion Beau Hossler.

“Very disappointed to miss the cut at the Western Amateur, but always an honor to play in the Western Golf Association’s event,” Hossler tweeted.

Cougars take lumps on road

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – An early lead escaped the Cougars on Wednesday in the middle game of their series against the South Bend Cubs.

Right fielder Victor Reyes lined a two-out, two run single to center in the second inning, but the Cougars were unable to score after that in a 10-2 loss. The Cougars (29-10 second half, 65-42 overall) won Tuesday’s series opener in 12 innings despite behind held hitless for the first nine innings.

South Bend’s Jeffrey Baez, who played for the Cougars when the franchise was aligned with the Cubs last season, smacked a bases-clearing double as part of a four-run eighth. The teams will conclude their series at 6:05 p.m. today.

By KEVIN FISHBAI N kfishbain@shawmedia.com BOURBONNAIS – On a day when the Bears’ offense struggled, and their offensive coordinator and quarterback spoke to the media, it was hard not to focus on the continued absence of rookie wide receiver Kevin White.

“He’s got a shin. You can call it splints, call it whatever you want. You see him out here. It’s not like we’re covering up some awful injury where he’s in a cast, a boot and crutches,” coach John Fox said after Wednesday’s practice. “We’ve got a plan for him.

We’ve wanted to rest it.”

Fox said the injury, which took place in OTAs, forced the team to shut him down for what is now seven weeks because the injury “flared up.”

“He’s mad at me right now because I won’t let him practice, but we’re going to be smart,” Fox said. “He’s going to be a viable part of our football team. … It flared up.

We’re trying to get it to settle down, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Offensive coordinator Adam Gase said that the work White is doing off the field decreases some of the concerns about White missing time during his first NFL training camp.

“He studies, he’s constantly asking questions in the meetings, [receivers] coach [Mike] Groh does a great job spending time with him,” Gase said.

“It’s just whenever we have a chance to get him out here we’ll see where he is on the field. I feel confident that right

now on paper he can tell you everything he’s supposed to do.”

White went to Nashville with Jay Cutler and a couple other offensive teammates, and Cutler said they “talked a lot down there and walked through some things. I know he’s doing everything he can to get out here.”

Alumni day: Brian Urlacher and Olin Kreutz were among the former Bears in attendance at Wednesday’s practice, along with James “Big Cat” Williams and Jim Miller.

Urlacher’s presence was notable, considering the fractured relationship with the organization after the 2012 season.

Fox addressed having Urlacher around the team.

“I’ve had a relationship with Brian before I came here, so I think that always helps.

He and I have a friendship already,” Fox said. “I’ve encouraged him to be around more, to come around. … I like alumni people, people who have been in the seats these guys have been.”

Virginia McCaskey also was in attendance and watching practice.

Quick hits: Three of the more noticeable plays during Wednesday’s session came from the reserves. Ka’Deem Carey, who is battling for a roster spot in the running back competition, broke off a long run showing his burst of speed. Shane Carden did throw an interception to Terrance MItchell, but made one of his better throws of camp rolling to his right to hit rookie wide receiver Cameron Meredith for a long gain.

While there are only a few chances every round to record a hole in one – a course might have anywhere between two and four par 3 holes – and there’s so much pomp and circumstance surrounding the event, it can quickly become an obsession for frequent golfers.

The mental side of golf is what led Jake Thurm, the director of golf at Fresh Meadow Golf Club in Hillside, to a degree in psychology.

There’s no way to speed up the process for those in search of their first hole in one.

Frequent play and a lesson with a professional will increase a player’s chances.

But, for Thurm, a hole in one comes down to repetition of skills, mental toughness and a little luck.

“A lot of great golf shots are mishits,” said Thurm, who has coached players that have gone to PGA Tour Qualifying School, played on the LPGA Tour and next week will work with Wheaton native and PGA Tour Player Kevin Streelman at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

“A recent study found 76 percent of all shots were mishit. Players should take a smart line on their shot and make an aggressive swing.

Plenty of aces happened because of a little cut or draw on the ball that they didn’t anticipate or a fortunate bounce.”

A fortunate bounce is exactly what Thurm got when he recorded the first of his four career holes in one when he was 12-years old.

“It happened the first few weeks I was playing,” Thurm said. “I probably hit a driver from 150 yards and it definitely ran more along the ground than it traveled in the air.”

He still has the ball and scorecard.

Many non-pet-owners don’t realize how strong the dog-owner bond can be. Others simply can’t fathom it and may even belittle your feelings. It is important to acknowledge your grief when your dog passes away – whether other people do or not.

Dogs live an average of 10 years. That means that even the longest-lived dogs won’t span a

It is normal to experience feelings of grief, possibly quite intensely and for a long time, after the death of a pet. Some of the tips below may be helpful.

• Reach out. If you know someone else who has lost a well-loved pet, talk with him or her about your loss. Many veterinary schools offer pet-loss support hotlines and may be able to recommend support groups as well. Pet Partners (www.petpartners.org) offers links to other groups and resources associated with pet loss and bereavement.

• Mourn the loss. Be good to yourself. Do what feels comforting, and allow yourself time to recover from the loss. Express your feelings. Hold a memorial service or funeral, or bury your pet at a pet cemetery.

• Remember the fun. What did you enjoy most about your pet? What did your pet love to do with you? Celebrate and remember all of the positive things your pet brought to your life.

Consider memorializing your pet through donations to organizations devoted to pets and their health.

• Seek help if you need it. It’s normal to feel some ongoing sadness about the absence of your pet. But if your grief continues, undiminished, for longer than six to 12 months and interferes with your ability to function, consider talking to a mental health professional.

• Get a new dog. A patient of mine once lost a dog and was grieving that loss. When I recommended that he get a new dog, he said he felt it would be “disloyal.” I didn’t understand that. I said that I bet the dog he lost would have wanted him to be happy. I told him that my brother-in-law had always had a golden retriever. A new golden puppy arrived in his home shortly after each death. Each new golden puppy was a new beginning for him. And for each of those golden puppies, he was their first beginning.

The two adults made it fail; indeed, considering your stepfather’s abusive personality, it was probably doomed from the start.

When there’s abuse in a marriage, to a spouse or children, divorce may be the only solution.

Mom needs a lot of support right now. Give her all the love you possibly can and she will return it to you in even greater amounts.

Dr. Wallace: I think the guy I’m dating could be an alcoholic. I’m 19 and he’s 21. Whenever we go out, he has to have a drink – beer, wine, whiskey, vodka, gin or whatever. I’ve asked him to cut down on his alcoholic intake, but all he says is that I shouldn’t worry because he doesn’t have a drinking problem.

I really fear for my life when I’m in a car after he’s been drinking, which is nearly every time we go out. He’s never totally drunk, but his reactions are altered.

Sometimes I wish he would be pulled over by the police so they’d take away his driver’s
