Schneider school to get new parking restrictions

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – New parking restrictions will be in place at Schneider Elementary School when school is back in session later this month.

North Aurora village trustees approved the restrictions at their meeting Monday. The school’s first full day of school is Aug. 20, and signs

will be posted notifying people of the new restrictions.

“We can get the signs ordered and put in place before school starts,” North Aurora Police Chief David Summer told trustees.

Summer said the new restrictions are needed because of the school’s growing population. The school has been operating under the same parking plan since 2009.

“Though this plan has

worked well, times have changed,” Summer told trustees. “The school enrollment is up approximately 100 students from the previous year of nearly 500 students.”

As part of the restrictions, no parking will be allowed from 7 to 9 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. from the northeast corner of Chestnut Street and Banbury Road, continuing north to the south boundary line of the North Aurora Care Center

Fundraiser to benefit Elburn teen

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Kiley Anderson, a 14-year-old Elburn girl, doesn’t let any challenge get in her way, despite the fact that she has cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

“She is always positive,” said Victoria Lunacek, who cares for Anderson. “She is always up for a challenge.”

Lunacek is helping organize the Anderson End Zone Fundraiser to help cover her physical therapy and medical expenses.

The fundraiser will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Aug. 14 at Riverside Receptions, 35 N. River Lane, Geneva. The event will feature a sports-themed dinner and dessert, music, silent auction, raffles and games throughout the night. Tickets are $30, available by calling Lunacek at 630-450-0592 or emailing her at

“We are hoping to sell 200 to

300 tickets and raise between $30,000 and $50,000,” Lunacek said.

The fact the fundraiser is sports themed is a direct reflection of Anderson’s interests.

“She is a big sports fan,” Lunacek said.

Anderson attends Clare Woods Academy in Wheaton, which provides a specialized educational environment. Services also include occupational therapy, speech/language and counseling. She also goes through the program Strides in Motion, an outpatient physical therapy practice based at Bull Run Equestrian Center near Elburn.

“She has such a sweet heart,” Lunacek said. “She is probably one of the sweetest kids I know.”

Man involved in Hampshire Township crash dies

LAWERENCE SYNETT lsynett@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The 22-yearold Sycamore man who recently died after a motorcycle crash northwest of Hampshire was remembered Tuesday as a natural racer. David Larson, owner of S&V Solutions in Sycamore, said 22-year-old John Beach was a skilled worker who welded and worked on projects for him. Beach used to ride the black and red motorcycle he built himself on S&V Solutions’ dirt track.

“The kid was a natural,” Larson said. “You just couldn’t touch him on the dirt track.

He’d beat guys who have been riding for 20 years.”

Beach was pronounced dead by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Officer about 2:50 a.m. Sunday, two days after a motorcycle crash, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office news release. The crash is under investigation.

Kane County sheriff’s deputies and Hampshire po-

lice responded to Allen Road east of Walker Road, which is northwest of Hampshire, about 1:50 a.m. Friday for a report of two motorcycles involved in a crash. Beach and Benjamin Fletcher, 26, of Elgin, were flown from Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after the crash. Authorities believe the men were traveling together; neither man was wearing a helmet.

Fletcher was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Larson was shocked at the news of Beach’s death consid-

ering his skill in riding motorcycles. Beach’s 22nd birthday was Thursday.

“He was trying to figure out what to do in life,” Larson said. “He had a career offer for professional welding and was about to take a test for an operator’s union. He had a lot of things on his plate and all sorts of opportunities.”

Larson said it will be difficult to replace Beach, a multitalented carpenter and welder who was “full of life.”

“A lot of us old guys are wringing our hands over this loss,” said Larson, who is 59 years old. “We’re sorely going to miss him.”

Batavia votes against lifting ban on video gambling

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting rejected lifting the city’s ban on video gambling.

Only four of the aldermen at the meeting voted to lift the ban. Six of the aldermen rejected lifting the ban.

The committee’s recommendation now goes on to the full City Council. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he would veto lifting the ban.

Several residents and church leaders spoke against lifting the ban.

“It will impact the moral complexion of our community,” said Keith Hallam, senior pastor at Sanctuary Church in Batavia, in addressing aldermen at “Nothing that is politically right is morally wrong.”

Hallam was one of several people who spoke against lifting the ban. Aldermen had previously voted, 8-2, to direct staff to draft a resolution to allow video gambling within the city.

Officials from the Batavia VFW had asked Batavia aldermen to reconsider the city’s ban on video gambling.

“I would like to point out that morality is not legislated,” said Dale Richard said, of the Batavia VFW. “We are here to vote on a legislative matter.”

But 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks, chairman of the City Council’s Government Services Committee, was in favor of lifting the ban.

“If we are going to ban video gambling, I don’t understand why were are not banning the state lottery in Batavia.”

Batavia, along with Geneva, St. Charles and Campton Hills, doesn’t allow video gambling.

Some communities that originally banned video gambling now allow it, including North Aurora, Sugar Grove and Elburn.

Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira has said there is no evidence that video gambling causes an increase in crime.

Bars, truck stops, social clubs and veterans organizations in those communities and counties with video gaming can have up to five gaming machines each. The Illinois Supreme Court in 2011 upheld the constitutionality of the Illinois Video Gaming Act.

GIRLS GONE TRI Group aims to take intimidation away from triathlons

By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com KANELAND – Dismounting their bikes in front of Hill’s Country Store in Kaneville, a group of women, ages 30 to 55, gather to discuss the 15-mile, no-one-left-behind ride they just completed. Soon they’re laughing and catching up, immersed in the feeling of camaraderie during the July 31 summer night.

They’re members of Girls Gone Tri, a free group for women to exercise or train with triathlon sports while being supported by group members and coaches. Their ride was part of the group’s weekly Thursday night bike rides in Kaneville.

Christine Schirtzinger, the group’s lead coach, said she wants members of the group to abstain from cliques or the intimidating nature that can come with cycling, running and swimming.

“Maybe some women only have three hours a week [for exercise], and it’s all good,” Schirtzinger said. “We can all make different goals to get healthy and fit, and we can do that as a team and we can empower each other.”

Many group members said they see a lack of non-professional cycling programs catered to women.

Schirtzinger received a coaching certificate and was hired to run and coach the indoor performance center. The group’s members and coaches

practice there mainly in cold weather.

“We work on a lot of skills during the winter,” Schirtzinger said about bik-

ing. “Most of the people new to our group haven’t had a lot of experience on the road.

I love that we can practice all those skills inside, where

[participants] are very safe.”

Schirtzinger said the group came to fruition with the help of sponsors The Bike Rack, Geneva Running Outfitters, Tri’d And True, Blue Seventy and Pearl Izumi. Group members get donations and discounts from the sponsors so they can have triathlon equipment.

“I literally could not do this without them, they’ve been such incredible resources for me,” Schirtzinger said about her sponsors. “I think it would have been a lot more cost-prohibitive without them.”

she mainly worked on sports on her own.

“I never had this group before,” Kramer said. “It’s really motivating, and it helps me grow as a person.”

That motivation is proven effective by a slew of accomplishments obtained by the group’s members, who often use Girls Gone Tri to train for other events. Kramer said she completed her first Half Ironman in July, and that she’s doing another in two weeks.

“I learned how to ride and how to ride more efficiently,” Cardelli said. “I went from an average of 11 mph to 17 mph.

It’s gradual growth, but it’s the participation of the group that gets you there.”

The group organized its version of a triathlon, “The Annual UN-race,” which was held June 14 at the Batavia Quarry. The untimed race consisted of a 400-yard swim, 10-mile bike and 3-mile run.

“We had one woman who has two active kids, who works full time and was working on her MBA,” Schirtzinger said. “She came to The UNrace and just did the swim so she could get home to go graduate with her MBA.” Group members, many of whom have jobs, kids or both, utilize the exercise and friendly support as a form of self-care.

“Biking is my time,” Schirtzinger said. “It’s what I do and is who I am, separate from my kids.”

‘Shop Elburn First’ campaign seeks support

At Monday’s meeting, the committee asked the Elburn Village Board, in a letter, for $5,000 to invest in the organization’s efforts with its “Shop Elburn First” campaign, promising a “sustained effort to drive home to our com-

munity that if they want our town to have the things they all say they want, they need to use them.”

When the committee had been established, no funds were budgeted toward its efforts.

The letter stated the campaign would include a logo, banners, window decals, newspaper ads, shopping bags and more, and it would “not be a ‘one-and-done’ campaign.”

Village Administrator Erin Willrett said board members Monday night asked the

committee to outline its needs.

She said the village is set to receive about $11,000 from its share of video gambling money, which is split between the village, the machines’ operators and the establishments that have the machines.

That money is slated to go to the village’s recreation fund, but Willrett said, if the budget were amended, a part of that money would go into the general operating fund.

Also, they aimed to attract businesses, such as a florist, specialty food stores and other retail shops, to empty spaces.

Long-term goals included pushing for well-marked, lighted and maintained parking lots near the downtown shopping district, as well as downtown beautification.

The USDA National Organic Standards Board defines organic agriculture as “an ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity.

It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.”

For farm manager Doug Salter, organic is the only thing that makes sense.

Wawona Packing Company to expand voluntary recall Wawona Packing Company of Cutler, California, is expanding its voluntary recall of whole white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, plums and pluots because of the potential of the products being contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, according to a news release issued by the Kane County Health Department.

He and his now 21-year-old son, Richard, helped launch the Aurora-based Venturing Crew 88, which is for those with special needs.

Upon receiving the Silver Beaver award during a banquet in June, Williams credited his son for the honor. The youth was diagnosed with autism soon before starting high school.

“I was telling him he’s the reason I got that award because he was my inspiration for my work in the special-needs program,” Williams said.

Although his son aged out of Venturing Crew 88 when he turned 21 Sunday, his father said their involvement with the group isn’t over.

The 49-year-old said he is “very appreciative” of the award – for which he received a knot for his uniform – but he does what he does because he enjoys it.

“I’ve never been about recognition,” Williams said.

Williams, who was involved in Scouts as a kid but didn’t make it to Eagle, has volunteered with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, but he believes his Silver Beaver nomination stemmed from his work regarding special needs in Scouting, he said.

FINANCE PROTECTION Police urge residents to guard against identity theft

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com When it comes to identity theft, Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler said thieves have 100,000 potential targets just in his agency’s jurisdiction alone.

But, he said, “They only really need to get one to be successful.”

While people are used to the precautions against residential burglaries, such as keeping lights on outside and telling neighbors when they’ll be on vacation, Gengler said the approach is much different with identity theft, as thieves use numerous tricks to obtain personal information.

“That’s what these people do all day long,” he said.

According to the U.S. Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, an estimated 16.6 million people – about 7 percent of those 16 and older in the United States – were victims of at least one incident of identity theft in 2012, resulting in a total financial

loss of $24.7 billion.

Of the victims, about 15.3 million reported the misuse or attempted misuse of an existing credit card or bank account, according to the bureau.

Additionally, it reported, about 1.1 million had their information misused to open a new account, and more than 800,000 people had their information misused for other fraudulent purposes.

Locally, reports of identity theft are common.

Recent police reports included a Sugar Grove resident whose credit card was used to make four fraudulent charges since May, totaling more than $1,300, and Elburn residents reported their checking account was used for a $4,000 transaction in Minnesota.

In another case from Elburn, a resident told police her Social Security number was used to open a utility account in Texas that racked up a bill of $1,479.79.

Gengler said catching identity thieves can be “ex-

tremely difficult,” as there is a good chance they live out of state or in another country.

“It’s tough to even identify these people,” he said.

But arrests do happen. Of the 22 identity theft investigations in St. Charles last year, three arrests were made, while 12 were transferred to outside agencies, according to the St. Charles Police Department’s annual report.

More recently, St. Charles resident Peter A. Mazzara, 36, last month turned himself in on a warrant carrying charges of identity theft, theft and forgery.

According to a St. Charles police report, he worked as an independent insurance agent and is accused of compromising a former coworker’s identity to steal about $3,200 from an insurance company. He reportedly had access to work files containing information pertaining to insurance policies and companies issuing them.

In Batavia, police last week charged 55-year-old Edward Arbet of Batavia with

felony aggravated identity theft, among other offenses.

Arbet reportedly tried to buy clothing with a stolen credit card.

“In this case, we were able to speak to our original victim, who was a shop owner who knew who Eddie Arbet was,” Batavia Detective Kevin Bretz said.

He said police often won’t get a call from victims until they check their bank statements – behavior he encourages.

“Watch your statements,” Bretz said, noting offenders might make small purchases before moving to bigger amounts. “Be safe. It’s your money. You earned it.”

The Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that in about two-thirds of the identity theft cases in 2012, the victims didn’t know how their information was obtained, and many victims discovered the theft when their financial institution alerted them to suspicious activity.

People can take precautions toward protecting their information, Bretz said. His suggestions include using debit cards as credit cards,

not losing sight of your credit card, making online purchases on secure sites and shredding or incinerating sensitive documents when getting rid of them.

“As soon as you see something’s not right,” he said, “contact the fraud division of your credit card company.”

Bretz said his police department might get three to four reports of fraudulent activity a week. The number, he said, depends on people reporting when they’ve been scammed into giving their personal information.

“A lot of people are embarrassed and don’t report it,” Bretz said. “Tell us. Let us know so we can try to help you out.”

Silicon Valley really can solve biggest problems

By NOAH SMITH Bloomberg News Sometime around 2006, I was sitting in my apartment in Japan listening to old music, and I heard a Bob Dylan song. It ends: “I wish, I wish, I wish in vain/That we could sit simply in that room again/Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat/I’d give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.”

As I listened, I started to miss my own high school gang. I was feeling more depressed, when suddenly I realized what an idiot I was.

I opened Firefox, fired up Google Talk, and found three of my old friends online. I immediately messaged all of them, and quickly received three rather irreverent responses.

It was at that moment

that I almost broke into tears, because I realized that something huge had changed for the better in the human experience. All throughout my youth, I had seen my parents and my friends’ parents drift away from their friends. The sheer difficulty of keeping in regular contact over extreme distances, even with telephones, meant that if you moved to a new town, you could make new friends but it would be hard to keep the old. Then came email and chat and Facebook and Instagram and the rest. And suddenly, through a trick of human ingenuity, you never have to lose touch with your old friends again. We woke up, and the world was better.

This is why I am annoyed when writers accuse Silicon Valley (by which they mean the entire tech industry) of

not solving big problems. Presumably, these tech critics want venture capitalists and entrepreneurs to take us into space, solve the global energy crunch or invent new labor-saving devices. And presumably they aren’t satisfied that SpaceX, Tesla, SolarCity and the Google Self-Driving Car project, among others, are working on all these things as we speak.

What critics of Silicon Valley’s vision fail to realize, though, is that the really big problems aren’t the hard ones or the spectacular ones.

The really big problems are things that affect the quality of human life.

Abraham Maslow, the psychologist, theorized that people’s needs come in a “hierarchy.” Once you take care of the basics – food, shelter, security – you start

being mainly concerned with social needs, like love, companionship and respect. The theory predicts that in poor countries, people will mainly be concerned with getting things like bigger houses, cars and better food. But in rich countries, where most people have these things, the focus will shift to human relationships and career success.

The problems of this higher rung of Maslow’s ladder are exactly the ones that tech companies like Facebook and Match.com have begun to crack. Consider the impact of dating sites on the lives of divorced people. For a young person, dating sites – OKCupid or Tinder – are a marginal improvement over the old singles scene of parties, bars and friends-of-friends.

But for divorced middle-aged

people, who are often socially isolated and occupied with work, meeting people is a much more daunting task.

For these people, dating sites are a godsend. If you don’t believe me, just ask your friends from Korea or China about their divorced parents. In those countries, online dating is still heavily stigmatized and generally feared – and the outcome is a lifetime of extreme loneliness for legions of older people.

The fact is, most of what people in the developed world want in life has to do with other human beings, not with the physical world around us.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon hopes next year to increase his office’s staffing levels by two, even as county leaders are asking departments to help reduce a potential $2 million deficit.

In his monthly meeting with reporters Tuesday, McMahon explained the need for two new employees – an assistant state’s attorney assigned to the civil division and a bilingual investigator for the Child Advocacy Center.

The added positions were part of a nearly $9.2 million 2015 budget the state’s attorney’s office presented to a County Board committee last month.

Since then, the County Board has asked the state’s attorney’s office and other county offices and departments to review their initial budget requests in light of a potential $2 million deficit.

McMahon said his office is in the process of doing that.

“We’re going to do our best,” he said, noting he hasn’t been

directed to make specific cuts.

The proposed added positions would address an increased need for services, McMahon said. According to his office’s presentation last month, the Child Advocacy Center conducted 380 Spanish-speaking interviews in 2012 and 540 in 2013.

If approved, the bilingual investigator would be the second on staff, McMahon said.

The other new hire’s primary responsibilities would be tied to the Kane County Treatment Alternative Court, a court-supervised mental health treatment program for eligible criminal defendants.

McMahon wouldn’t estimate the percentage of people in the criminal justice system with mental health issues, but he said there is a high correlation between the two. Mental health issues could be contributing factors in their criminal behavior, he said.

Alternative programs such as the Treatment Alternative Court, rehabilitation court and diversion programs contribute to reduced crime rates, McMahon said.

Dudzinski to play in Italy with Fortitudo Agrigento

A

s his summer travel itinerary expands with every destination – Boston to Elburn to New York City to Cuba to Agrigento, Italy – Dave Dudzinski takes a rare pause.

“All over the place, man,” he said.

Every mile builds toward the Kaneland and Holy Cross product’s professional basketball debut. He reports to Fortitudo Agrigento, a team in a second-tier Italian league, later this month, with promises of an apartment, car, monthly pay and right-hand side driving awaiting him.

That’s all Dudzinski needs for now. He’s taking his passport because it’s required, not to rack up the stamps.

“A lot of people bring that up to me, and I’m looking forward to seeing the country and Europe, but at the same time, it’s not a vacation, really,” Dudzinski said. “It’s my job. I’m going to treat it like that. I can’t treat it like a vacation. You have to take it seriously and do what’s best.

Put my career first. All those sights, you can fall in with when you get the time.”

At 6-foot-9 and 235 pounds, Dudzinski remains his own physical marvel, one bent on staying across the pond for awhile before potentially building steam to give a possible NBA career a shot.

Holy Cross coach Milan Brown says he “wouldn’t be surprised to turn on NBA TV and see” Dudzinski “on a summer league team” in five to eight years. High praise for the player Brown calls “probably the hardest-working kid that I’ve coached” over four seasons with Holy Cross and seven at Mount St. Mary’s.

To that end, Dudzinski arrived at the Boston Celtics’ practice facility from nearby Holy Cross for a pre-NBA draft workout in late June.

He came armed with a psychological edge, if not every scout’s attention, in a

rebounding at 7.4 a game.

Predominantly a back-tothe-basket player with the Crusaders, who won 55 games in his four seasons, Dudzinski showed touch from distance, as well, shooting 35.1 percent from three-point range as a senior.

He devoted summer workouts to increasing his shooting and ballhandling skills, feeling confident about his blend of strength and agility in the post. Still keeping tabs on Dudzinski, Brown recalls a player who entered the program already bearing a pleasant surprise: more athleticism than the coaching staff thought at first glance.

“Dave goes 100 percent in the weight room, game, practice, classroom,” Brown said.

“He’s a rare breed, for sure.

I tell his parents every time I see him, they did a great job raising him.”

Dudzinski again explored his options – basketball, fallback and otherwise – with parents David and Barb a few weeks ago.

Out for an encore Batavia graduated several offensive skill position players from its 2013 IHSA Class 6A state championship football team but brings back strong experience on the line. Especially thankful he wasn’t sidelined with an injury to any to the “big three” knee ligaments – ACL, MCL, PCL – he began actively rehabilitating the knee after surgery.

As each day passes, Niemiec finds something about his range of motion returns.

With a few days left before the Bulldogs’ first practice, he is taking advantage of time off from team camp, but also making sure not to be sedentary, often getting together to review routes with wide receivers who did not take family vacations.

“It’s a good break,” Niemiec said. “I mean, it’s a time where people can just get healthy again.”

Batavia promoted Niemiec from the sophomore team for the 2013 IHSA postseason. He proved a quick study under recent graduate Micah Coffey, who quarterbacked the Bulldogs to the Class 6A state title.

“I learned so much from that guy,” Niemiec said. “Just the stuff that he knows and the stuff that he’s been teaching. … Every practice it was.

‘What should I be looking for on this play? What’s going to be happening here?’ ” Nine months later, Niemiec is confident he’s in position to take the reins in full.

“Just preparing,” he said.

“Because we’ve got a big week coming up and we want to come out fired up.”

Batavia junior Kyle Niemiec suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee during a baseball showcase last month.

He’s already eager to get back on the diamond next season, but not before he vies for the football team’s starting quarterback vacancy.

For Niemiec, the road to recovery hinges on being as active as possible, a pursuit that starts on the gridiron when the defending Class 6A state champions open practice Monday.

“That was a setback, an injury that I did not want to happen,” Nie- Kyle Niemiec miec said. “It’s just something I have to come back from. It’s a competition, and I feed off competing.”

Bracing for a camp competition with senior Evan Acosta, Niemiec enjoyed a few early fist pumps during a recent doctor’s visit.

Told his recovery was ahead of schedule, Niemiec also learned he’d be able to return to full activity Aug. 11.

Asked when football practices started, Niemiec grinned and told his doctor that same day.

“It was kind of funny how the doctor said it. That’s what I just can’t wait for. Just getting back on the field, you know,” Niemiec said.

While still hazy about the exact sequence that led to his injury, Niemiec can pinpoint it to diving to make a play at shortstop for his Carol Stream-based DuPage Training Academy travel team.

His quad felt tender, so Niemiec did stretches and worked to stay in the game.

Citing a history of playing through injuries both known and unknown, he finished the game and headed for home.

There was one problem when he arrived, though. He could hardly move to exit the car.

Senior baseball recruit relieves pressure with collegiate selection

While that .667 mark translates to a marvelous batting average, it’s not exactly the stuff of recruiting videos.

Good thing for Wiss he has time to get acclimated. The Burlington Central senior only verbally committed to the Falcons baseball program Sunday.

“I don’t mind flying,” Wiss said. “I just never thought about going into the Air Force to do it.”

Actually, Wiss may not even enter an aircraft career arc when the time comes to

solidify his post-graduation military service path in a few years.

The Air Force offers versatile options, much like Wiss, who wowed the Falcons both with his 3.94 grade-point average and slick, 5-foot11, 175-pound frame.

Drew Wiss “He can literally play all four infield positions and all three outfield positions,” Central coach Kyle Nelson said. “Actually, when he came into our program, he was a catcher and a pitcher. He doesn’t do any of those things for us anymore, but I’m sure he could if you asked him.”

.381 as the leadoff man for the Big Northern Conference East co-champions. Seventeen of his 37 hits went for extra bases.

A few colleges expressed interest entering the season, but one school’s involvement rose to the top because of a May 10 nonconference game against Grant.

Air Force coach Mike Kazlausky’s father, a Grant assistant, was so impressed with Wiss’ play that day at Judson University that he called his son in Colorado Springs, Colorado to offer a recommendation.

Kazlausky watched Wiss play center field with his Downers Grove Longshots travel team a few weeks later and was doubly encouraged when his academic acumen matched up with Air Force’s

Ryan Paradise’s surname assures he brings at least a sense of bliss to every situation.

While he wasn’t disgruntled with the prospect of a fifth season as Marmion boys basketball coach, another opportunity enticed Paradise more.

Paradise, 29, recently resigned from his position as Marmion physical education teacher and coach to work fulltime with his family’s budding business, Naperville-based Basketball Paradise. A move he already knew was coming was accelerated as the youth player development project grew.

“Marmion was a great experience,” Paradise said. “It was my first years coaching actual high school basketball and it may be the only high school basketball that I coach. ... I’ll just remember the kids and the players. One thing about anyone who ever saw my teams play, I don’t know if you ever saw any kids play any harder.”

Paradise cultivated that work ethic under his father, Fran, and clung to it while playing at Naperville Central and Northern Illinois. Now he gets the chance to work alongside his dad and brother, Patrick, 26.

Producing three .500-or-

above finishes en route to a 5361 record at Marmion, Paradise juggled coaching a 14U travel team in the spring and summer for the past two years. He’s set to assume year-round responsibilities for that team and others while also leading fundamentals-driven training programs.

A seamless early operation coupled with expanding participation convinced Paradise he could move away from his Marmion role in 2014-15 as the calendar approached August.

Earlier this year, Paradise Basketball settled into a facility at 31W300 Schoger Drive in Naperville after nomadic beginnings.

“I just absolutely love doing it,” Paradise said, “and the interest has been there.”

Marmion athletic director Joe Chivari said a search for a replacement is ongoing.

Along with informing the Marmion administration of his decision, Paradise met with players in what he termed a difficult setting.

“It was quiet, let’s put it that way,” he said. “I tried to gather as many guys as we could with it being summer and people every which way. … None of the boys really said too much. I think they were kind of stunned. I’ll be around and checking on them, but I did most of the talking in that meeting.”

Cougars stay atop MWL with split KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE PEORIA – Shortly before continuing a successful August, the Cougars put an exclamation mark on their big July.

The parent Cubs announced right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng as the minor league pitcher of the month for July on Tuesday, saluting the 19-year-old who went 3-1 with a 1.47 ERA in four games and five starts.

The stretch included 20 strikeouts and four walks in 30⅔ innings.

Later in the day, the Cougars improved to a Midwest League-best 71-43 by splitting

a doubleheader against Peoria. The Chiefs won the opener, the resumption of Monday’s game postponed because of rain, 4-1.

The Cougars responded to win the nightcap by the same score.

Game 1 consisted of nine innings, while Jen-Ho Tseng Game 2 was shortened to seven.

Taking over for Duane Underwood in the opener, Tseng extended his sterling recent stretch with 6⅓ innings of one-run, two hit ball.

Trouble was, the Cougars

managed just four hits against Chiefs pitchers Kevin Herget and Zach Loraine. Chesny Young drove in the team’s lone run in Monday’s first inning.

The offense responded in the second game, making the most of six hits. After Shawon Shawon DunDunston Jr. ston Jr. and Young opened the game with singles, Dunston scored on a throwing error from pitcher Chase Brookshire on a potential force attempt.

Brescacin hopes to be big part of Huskies’ offense

Growing up in Mississauga, Ontario – a suburb of Toronto – Brescacin decided to come stateside to attend Culver Military Academy in Indiana his final two years of high school.

Basketball also used to be the Northern Illinois junior receiver’s No. 1 sport, but eventually football took over. It led him here, where he’s looking to be a big part of the Huskies’ offense this season.

“I’ve been trying to just make the most of my opportunities,” Brescacin said after Tuesday’s practice at Huskie Stadium. “So far it’s paid off for me.”

At one point, Brescacin saw a future in basketball. He played AAU ball in the Toronto area, seeing the same court as players such as Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Phoenix Suns guard Tyler Ennis and Sacramento Kings guard Nick Stauskas, who went to high school with Brescacin in Mississauga.

Brescacin was recruited to Culver primarily to play basketball. He had played football

“Expectations for him have risen as a player. Instead of hoping to do things, he’s expecting to do them,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “When you get confidence and expectations that meet in the same place, you usually get a pretty good player.”

• Kingsley Flood, “Live at the Armory.” George Hall’s guitar work provides even more of a backbone here than on Kingsley Flood’s stellar studio albums: Unassumingly raucous, it simultaneously grounds this live collection of the band’s best songs – recorded in front of a small crowd at the Armory in Somerville, Massachusetts – and sends it soaring at all the right moments. His turn on “Devil’s Arms Full,” all winking swagger and rockabilly raunch, is a particular standout.

But as usual with these Boston-based folk-punk (or is it punk-folk?) rockers, “Live at the Armory” lives and dies by frontman Naseem Khuri’s lyrics and his breathless delivery of them. On rockers like “Strongman” and “Sun Gonna Lemme Shine,” his compelling, wild-eyed rasp is impassioned, pointed and best of all, unique; there’s just no one else out there who sounds like this guy.

Factor in killer horns and Jenee Morgan’s beautiful harmonies and counterpoints, and you have the perfect entry into Kingsley Flood’s world if you’ve yet to experience it – or the perfect celebration of it if you have.

• Rockin’ Jason D. Williams, “Hillbillies and Holy Rollers.” Williams isn’t exactly the force of nature here that he was on 2010’s “Killer Instincts,” but the (slightly) slower place actually suits the new album well, taking Williams’ boogie-woogie piano licks and laconic vocal drawl in cheeky new directions.

And his snappy “Sweet Georgia Brown” actually breathes new life into the old chestnut, effectively swiping it back from the Harlem Globetrotters. Short, punchy and irrepressible, “Hillbillies and Holy Rollers” is a halfhour or so well spent. (Info at rockinjasondwilliams.com) • Various artists, “Bob Dylan in the ’80s, Volume One.” There are pleasures to be found in Bob Dylan’s much-maligned ’80s output, and the contributors to “Bob Dylan in the ’80s” prove it on one of the

most consistent collections of Dylan covers to come along in a while.

The album only has one flat-out disaster: Reggie Watts’ truncated, jumbled up version on “Brownsville Girl,” easily Dylan’s masterpiece of that decade. But the rest of the tracks are all worthwhile: The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn was made to cover “Sweetheart Like You,” and Glen Hansard’s ragged “Pressing On,” from Dylan’s “Saved,” captures the simplicity and beauty of Bob’s “gospel” output.

Some of these songs were just so well constructed by Dylan that it would take a concerted effort to do them poorly – “Jokerman” and “Dark Eyes” come to mind, and the versions here, by Built to Spill and Dawn Landes with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, are suitably stunning.

More impressive, though, are the “lesser” tracks that the cover artists make their own: “When The Night Comes Falling From the Sky,” a Springsteen knockoff from

“Empire Burlesque,” becomes a jangly triumph in Lucius’ hands. And “Got My Mind Made Up,” a bluesy trifle from “Knocked Out Loaded,” translates much better in Langhorne Slim’s banjo-laden Americana version.

“Bob Dylan in the ’80s” shows that era to be a more than worthy inspiration to Bobophiles present and future. Not to mention deserving of space on your Bob mixtape (whatever that is).

(Info at 80sdylan.com) • Vinyl Spotlight: Bonnie Raitt, “Nick of Time.” Capitol Records/UMe has issued a vinyl re-release of Bonnie Raitt’s “Nick of Time” to commemorate its 25th anniversary, which is as good a reason as any to revisit the album – and I’m happy to report it holds up beautifully. Awash in gravelly blues and poignant ballads, it’s smooth without being slick, and her slide guitar work is, frankly, mesmerizing.

Raitt’s two original compositions are easily among the album’s best: The opening title track is one of the most thoughtful meditations on aging ever set to music. And “The Road’s My Middle Name,” closes the album with a rollicking, worn-in vibe that feels well-earned.

In between those two tracks are an impressive array of blues rock efforts, several of which today feel like standards. The buoyant riff Raitt puts on John Hiatt’s “Thing Called Love” only amplifies the song’s infectious appeal, and on Bonnie Hayes’ winking “Love Letter,” Raitt’s crisp drawl generates the steam heat of as-yet-unrequited love.

Twenty-five years later, the remastered vinyl edition is a wonderful way to relive all these songs – rarely has an artist been better suited for vinyl’s warm tone. Dear Abby: Coming out of an abusive relationship in the past, I made some poor decisions.

I moved away from home and into pornography and prostitution. I come from a small town, and it became a big deal when it hit the Internet. Everyone in my generation back home knew what I did.

Years later, I’m back home. I have a wonderful husband and we’re expecting our first child – a girl. My husband loves and accepts me in spite of my past, and my mother has become my best friend. I love my life here.

Nowhere else feels like home.

But I’m worried that my child’s life could be miserable here because of my past. She will go to school with the children of people who know my history.

No parent would want their child around me and – by extension – her. She may also learn the unsavory things I did.

I’m torn between moving away for her sake or staying. My parents are aging and have no one else to care for them. They

How long after that date is it safe to use them? – Wondering In New Jersey Dear Wondering: According to Eatbydate.com, when it comes to milk, the length of time it lasts beyond the expiration date on the carton depends on what kind of milk it is. Lactose-free and non-fat milk last another seven to 10 days.

Skim and reduced-fat milk, one week.

Whole milk should last five to seven days. Of course, for this to happen, the milk must be stored properly, at a temperature at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that eggs should be refrigerated at the time you buy them and as soon as possible upon your return home, and can be used up to three weeks after the sell-by date if they have been stored properly.

Choose right kind, right amount of fish during pregnancy Dear Doctor K: I recently found out that I’m pregnant. I’d like to continue eating fish, but I understand some fish contain mercury, which could be harmful to my baby. What fish should I avoid?

Dear Reader: Fish are a great source of lean protein, and many types are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help brain and nerve development and protect the heart. In fact, current dietary guidelines recommend that women who are pregnant eat 12 ounces of seafood a week.

But as you noted, some species of fish do contain worrisome amounts of methylmercury. This toxin is especially dangerous to developing brains. High-mercury fish you should avoid during pregnancy include swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish.

A recent study may add two more fish to that list. The study hints that salmon and tuna may also boost mercury levels.

The new study looked at what types of seafood Americans eat and how often, and how that affects mercury levels in the blood.

The vast majority of participants had blood levels of mercury in

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the safe zone. Not surprisingly, the more fish people ate, the higher the levels of mercury in their blood. Those who consumed swordfish, shark and other high-mercury fish were the most likely to have higher blood levels of mercury. But some study participants who reported that they ate only salmon or tuna also had high mercury levels.

My Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Emily Oken has studied women’s fish consumption during pregnancy. She explains that it’s complicated to tease out the harmful effects of mercury. That’s because the primary source of mercury in our diets is fish. And fish have nutrients that are beneficial to the brain and the heart – the same organs that mercury may harm.

Low-mercury fish options include trout, herring, pollock, flounder and sole. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a

table listing additional low-mercury seafood choices.)

In this column I try to make things simple, but the reality is that things are rarely as simple as we would like. Eating fish is a good example. Like all foods, fish contain many different substances. Many of them are healthy, but some of them are unhealthy.

So, what do you do? As with so many things in life, the key is moderation. Continue to enjoy fish, just not too much. Since you’re pregnant, eat 12 ounces of fish a week. And choose the fish that contain relatively low levels of mercury. Stay away from high-mercury species.

Finally, remember that “moderation” also applies to advice. If you’ve already had a meal or two of high-mercury fish during your pregnancy, please don’t worry that you’ve injured your baby’s brain. A meal or two of high-mercury fish is not like taking poison.

Daughter should not feel guilty Dr. Wallace: I was born in December of 1997. Last weekend I was looking for my birth certificate in a box marked “important” papers, and while browsing through the box, I found my parents’ wedding certificate. It stated that they were married on July 14, 1997.

My mom always told me that they were married on July 14, 1996. My parents are now divorced, and I am living with my mom.

She is a wonderful parent and I love her very much. She is also my best friend. My parents are divorced and my father has left the region and we don’t know where he is and we don’t really care. He was a terrible husband and father. I’m thrilled that he is out of our lives.

Now that I have discovered that mom was pregnant when she married my father, I feel guilty because she probably wouldn’t have married this guy if she wasn’t going to have a baby. Should I talk to my mom about all this, or should I just “let sleeping dogs lie”? – Nameless, Moline Dear Nameless: You had nothing to say about your parents’ marriage, and it appears that their divorce was inevitable.

You have no reason to feel guilty for anything concerning Mom and Dad. There is no good reason to mention to Mom that you are aware that she was pregnant when she married your father.

Dr. Wallace: I would like to comment on the girl who said that her parents compared her to a cousin just to encourage her to do better academically.

My mother always compared me unfavorably to my many cousins. I was either too fat or my grades were not good enough.

One of the arts of good bridge is reading the cards – working out who has what from those played.

That is important for West in this deal. How should he plan the defense against three no-trump? West leads the heart four: three, jack, queen. South plays a club to dummy’s king, then runs the diamond jack. After winning with his queen, how should West continue?

South starts with only five top tricks: two hearts (given trick one) and three clubs. Obviously he will play on diamonds for more winners, with spades on the back burner if necessary.

Several years ago, during an interview, I was asked what is the one thing I teach my students that they never seem to get straight and I cannot understand why. This is what I answered. When playing third hand high on defense, you play the bottom of equally powerful cards.

In this deal, when East plays the heart jack at trick one, he denies holding the 10. So West, reading the cards, knows that South started with the heart ace, queen and 10.

This means that leading another heart cannot be right. West needs to get East on play for a heart lead through South.

Enter the second key rule: If you lead low from length, you guarantee at least one honor in that suit. Here, West should shift to the spade eight, high denying an honor. Then East should win with his ace and return the heart seven, resulting in South’s going down two.

MAPLE PARK – Perhaps a night exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematics might sound a little intimidating. Instead, a night of stargazing while dining at Kuipers Family Farm would feel like a fun night out.

The Northern Illinois University STEM Cafe will feature such an opportunity from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Tuesday at the orchard at Kuipers, 1N318 Watson Road in Maple Park. It is a free event, but visitors are invited to dine for a fee. Kuipers will provide a special menu, and soft drinks, beer and wine will be available for purchase.

STEM Cafe events provide a way for those at NIU to take their message on the road and provide an educational program in a more relaxed environment. For example, STEM Cafe will have a Physics of Football event at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at O’Leary’s Restaurant in DeKalb. A past event was on the topic of the Science of Beer.

Judith Dymond, the coordinator for the NIU Center for Economic Education, said organizers are excited about Tuesday’s event. The main draw is the annual Perseid meteor shower. There will be three speakers from NIU – Daniel Strange, David Hedin and Sheldon Turner – to discuss subjects from NASA’s latest missions to the meteor shower. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Strange is the new manager of the NIU Davis Hall Observatory. He will speak on the history of unmanned

spacecraft missions to comets, according to a news release.

Hedin is a board of trustees professor. He will discuss recent discoveries of exoplanets and talk about the possibility of habitable Earth-like planets in the universe, according to the release.

Turner is with NIU’s Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy. He plans to discuss why the International Astronomical Union changed the definition of a planet to exclude Pluto and created the new category of dwarf planet, the release states.

to have the event at a place such as Kuipers, which will allow enough darkness to fully enjoy the night sky.

“We’re really excited about being there,” Dymond said. “The space is so nice.”

Sievert described the setting as picturesque. She said the event starts before dark, with presentations inside.

There will be solar lights set up before the event, and after the presentations, participants will walk to a path, featuring the solar lights, that will lead to telescopes that will be set up.

The events take place regardless of the weather, but Sievert said a clear sky will make for a more enjoyable viewing experience.

“As long as the weather cooperates, there will be stargazing,” she said.
