Elburn trustees OK membership deal with Batavia Park District ELBURN – Village residents will be able to buy a household membership with the Batavia Park District.

Elburn trustees voted Monday to unanimously approve the intergovernmental agreement. The arrangement will allow Elburn residents to pay $320 to acquire the household membership for a year. That membership will allow access to the Batavia Park District’s programming at resident rates.

The cost is about what the average homeowner pays to the park district in taxes.

The membership is good for all members of a household.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla Two items were added to address concerns voiced previously by Elburn officials.

The agreement spells out the household membership would make buyers eligible for “in-district” rates at the Batavia Park District. Also, either side may terminate the agreement, with a 30-day notice. The plan calls for Elburn to pay the park district $2,500 for each year of the agreement, and Elburn

trustees previously had concerns about committing to that fee for two years if participation is low.

The deal provides an option for residents. Elburn does not have a park district.

Village President Dave Anderson on Monday called it “an opportunity for residents.” He said those interested can have the access, and those who are not would not have to pay.

Elburn Village Administrator Erin Willrett said efforts would begin to distribute park district materials to village residents. The

$2,500 fee is to “help defray the cost of administering” the program, according to the agreement, and park district officials said it would cover marketing expenses, including printing and mailing additional catalogs, as well as administrative expenses.

Male suspect flees from Geneva police

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva police will follow various leads in an attempt to locate a man who ran from officers earlier Tuesday north of the Geneva train depot, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email.

Police at noon attempted to serve a warrant to the man when he began to run on foot northwest of the area of South and Third streets in downtown Geneva, Nash wrote.

The suspect is described as a white male about 5 feet, 11 inches tall, wearing a black tank top and camouflage pants, Nash confirmed in the email.

The warrant for the man did not originate from the Geneva Police Department, and Nash wrote the original agency in search of the man declined to give her authority to release the name as of early Tuesday evening.

Fun Fest’s Toilet Bowl Challenge takes a break Maple Park festival adds new events; toilet races might return next year MAPLE PARK – The Maple Park Fun Fest will be taking a toilet break this year.

For 10 years, the annual Toilet Bowl Challenge has been one of the festival’s signature events. But with participation down in recent years, organizers said the event won’t be taking place at this year’s festival, which runs from Sept. 5 to 7 on Main Street in Maple Park.

Instead, there will be some new attractions, including Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles and the Tower Hill Petting Zoo. Also, festival organizers are seeking participants for a parade.

More crafters are needed, and additional volunteers are welcome.

Brittany Altepeter, a member of the festival’s parade committee, said preparing an entry for the toilet bowl event

takes effort. It calls for participants to decorate a toilet and assemble a three-person team.

One team member would steer and the other two would push. A new driver would be in place at the halfway point.

Team members would need to find a way to get the toilets on wheels.

“I think people these days don’t really have time to decorate the toilet bowl,” Altepeter said, adding the event could be back in a new format next year.

Beth Miller, the director of public relations for the festival, wrote in an email that “the toilet bowl races will hopefully be back next year.”

Altepeter and Miller were enthusiastic about the events that will take place at this year’s Fun Fest. The festival kicks off Sept. 5 with a 5K race.

Other highlights that day will include a bike parade, a beer garden and a 6 p.m. parade on

“We’re pretty excited,” Altepeter said.

On Sept. 6, there will be a car show and a Maple Park Fire Department Water Challenge, as well as an 8:30 p.m. fireworks show. The Michael Heaton Band and Back Country Roads will perform on stage. A slow-pitch softball tournament takes place throughout the festival, and the tournament is the main event Sept. 7.

“Through my tears, I would just keep doing it,” she said, explaining her daughter never got a good, deep latch. Lager’s husband would tell her it would be OK if she stopped breast-feeding, she said, but she persisted.

“I just knew it was the best thing for her,” the now mother of two said. “And I knew that it would be such a special and intimate thing between me and my baby that I craved it. I wanted to be able to do it.”

Lager, whose daughters are 2 and 1, is just one of many mothers in the Tri-Cities area who pursued breast-feeding.

Many offered to share their experiences for this article, which is being published during World Breastfeeding Week. The week is observed Aug. 1 to 7.

From breast-feeding twins to latching worries, the women’s situations were vast and varied and often conveyed a sense of pride. They included stories of exclusively pumping, of needing to use formula and of donating leftover supply to a milk bank.

Despite the many variables

moms encounter, lactation specialist Sharon Lemon said it is a powerful experience for many.

“It can be an emotional journey, whether it turns out to be the easiest thing you ever did or the hardest thing,” said Lemon, who works at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. “It can be emotionally draining, as well as rewarding.”

‘Ideal food’

At Delnor, efforts to initiate breast-feeding begin within an hour of delivery, Lemon said. In cases where that is not possible, she said, the mother is set up with a breast pump right away.

About 90 percent of babies delivered at Delnor are breast-fed in the hospital, and the goal is to keep them exclusively breast-fed through discharge, Lemon said.

The countywide statistics are similar. In 2014, 89.2 percent of infants in Kane County hospitals received breast-feeding, and 71.45 percent were exclusively breast-fed, Kane County Health Department spokesperson Tom Schlueter said.

“It’s the ideal food for baby,” Lemon said. “Every little drop is amazing.”

St. Charles resident Maegan Jenkins had planned to breast-feed her son, Parker, for only six months, like she had with his sister. But, she said, he’s still breast-feeding at almost 2 years old because the milk is “incredibly vital” for him because of an immune disorder.

Breast milk is a natural way for him to get the immunoglobulins he desperately needs, she said, noting he also nurses for comfort.

Jenkins said knowing nothing would be as good as what is natural contributed to her decision to breast-feed.

“I wanted to give him the best possible start that I could give him,” she said.

Learning process

In preparation for her firstborn, Ashley Hartke of Geneva took a nursing class, but it didn’t prepare her for the nearly three weeks she would spend trying to establish breast-feeding.

“I never let myself consider it wouldn’t be anything other than a piece of cake,” Hartke said. “I had no idea it would be this hard.”

For the first three weeks, her son wouldn’t latch, resulting in a cycle of him screaming and her pumping, she said. It was “super overwhelming, frustrating and scary,” she said, adding she was exhausted, and her baby wasn’t sleeping well because he wasn’t eating well.

She gave it three weeks, and luckily he latched two and a half weeks in, Hartke said.

“I didn’t want to make this big decision to switch to formula without giving us a chance to figure it out,” she said.

Hartke didn’t do it alone.

Her husband was involved, she said, and she also got support from lactation consultants at Delnor.

Delnor offers a variety of resources for nursing mothers, including a weekly support group and lactation services for inpatients, as well as outpatients, Lemon said. She said mothers don’t need to deliver at Delnor to take advantage of the programs.

The first 100 customers in line when the restaurant opened at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday received certificates for a free weekly seven-inch Italian beef sandwich for a year.

Aiello said he quickly made friends with other people who also were camped out at the restaurant.

“We talked all night,” Aiello said. “Everybody was helping everybody out.”

Aiello arrived at Buona Beef at 10 p.m. Monday and was one of the first 10 people in line. Standing beside him were Dave Toy of Rosemont and his son, Andrew Toy, who brought blankets and sleeping bags with them.

Dave Toy said he regularly eats at Buona Beef restaurants.

“The beef sandwiches are excellent,” he said. “I wouldn’t do this at a place where I didn’t like the food.”

His son, however, is partial to the restaurant’s pepperoni pizza. The St. Charles restaurant is the 15th Buona Beef to open in the Chicago area.

The first Buona restaurant opened in Berwyn in 1981.

Buona Beef co-owner Joe Buonavolanto Jr. said he was “humbled” to see the enthusiastic response to the opening of the restaurant.

“We are looking forward to many years of serving the community,” he said.

Mediacom switching to all-digital reception

BY ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – With Mediacom recently converting all its channels to digital-only reception, those customers who own older model TV sets will need to obtain a digital adapter to continue their service.

The conversion took effect in two stages, with the second stage taking effect Tuesday.

Mediacom serves several communities in Kane County, including Elburn, Maple Park, Sugar Grove and Kaneville.

Customers who have an older model TV set not connected to a digital cable box will need a digital adapter to convert digital video signals into a format that can be received and displayed on older, nondigital TVs. Mediacom will provide a limited number of digital adapters at no cost to customers through July 31, 2016,

if ordered before Sept. 30.

After that time, a monthly equipment fee of 99 cents per standard adapter or $1.99 per high-definition adapter will be charged.

Mediacom for many years had been providing both analog and digital signals, Mediacom communications director Phyllis Peters said.

“Yes, it’s been a convenience to a lot of people, but by now, a lot of technology has changed, which is a good thing,” she said. “There aren’t as many analog TVs in use, but even if they still have the older analog TVs, we have it covered with the adapters we provide.”

By taking away the analog channels, Mediacom has been able to use the additional bandwidth for other purposes, Peters said, such as adding more high-definition channels and increasing broadband speeds.

Breast-feeding and the workplace

As a stay-at-home mom, Lager said it’s easier for her to breast-feed and to stick with it.

“I feel very lucky I have that opportunity,” she said.

Jenkins, a clinical psychologist, said she had some initial hesitation when she was encouraged to breast-feed her son longer than she had planned. Between running a private practice and a household, she said, there was a lot on her plate.

“It is a big time constraint,” she said of breast-feeding.

But, Jenkins said, the benefits “tremendously” out-

weighed the negatives, and she worked nursing into her routine. She estimated the activity takes “a good hour and a half” each day.

Although Illinois has legislation that supports breast-feeding moms, Lemon said some still struggle with having a place to pump in the workplace. She recommends women plan ahead before returning to work: learn if there is a place to pump and ask what other breast-feeding moms do or did.

Hartke, a high school health teacher, said she had a very supportive co-worker environment. Most also had breast-fed, she said, and they helped watch her class when she needed to pump.

“You need support from your family, and you need support from your co-workers,” she said.

Hager, who serves as the breast pump operations coordinator, said the family-owned pharmacy helps moms with breast-feeding basics, offers weighted feedings and assists with breast pump flange fittings.

It also helps women learn what pumping equipment is covered by their insurance, Hager said. Since the Affordable Care Act made breast pumps covered by insurance, she said the store has gone from shipping about 20 pumps a month to about 300 a month nationwide, mostly in Illinois.

And, she said, more and more women are taking advantage of the services, most of which are free.

Pound 4 Pound Fitness began holding classes July 15 at 231 Main St. in Maple Park, co-owner Danny DeKing said.

The roughly 1,000-square-foot Maple Park site is not a 24/7 membership location, but a specialty training facility in which people have to set up their appointments in advance, DeKing said.

DeKing and Darby chose Sycamore resident Rebecca Ginley to manage and teach at the Maple Park location.

Ginley became certified in multiple styles of fitness after her doctor told her she risked death if she didn’t make changes in her life.

“It wasn’t easy. Nothing worth having ever is,” Ginley wrote on the Pound 4 Pound Fitness Maple Park Facebook page. “Hard work and dedication changed me. Now, instead of my kids wearing me out I keep up with them!”

What will be your legacy?

It’s August, and that means the end of summer, the start of the new school year and time to reflect on your legacy. What Will Be Your Legacy Month is an observance to get us thinking about the impact we want to leave on those around us. In the financial world, we would say a legacy is your estate plan. But it also can be much more than that.

Typical estate planning techniques involve creating written legal instruments, such as last wills or trusts, to provide direction with respect to the disposition of assets. The usual focus is simply on what and to whom. Many people, however, view wealth as more than money and possessions. These individuals desire to supplement those usual planning documents with directives that transfer what they believe to be “true valuables” – namely, their wisdom, guiding principles, spiritual beliefs and family heritage. These additional directives are commonly referred to as “ethical wills,” and they are well on their way to becoming a mainstay in estate planning once again.

The history of ethical wills is a long and rich one, tracing its roots back to when history was first recorded. Such directives were commonly used by pharaohs in Egypt and by Old Testament patriarchs to convey wisdom, motivating values and instruction to successors in managing their kingdoms. According to Jewish history, Jacob gathered his children around his deathbed and instructed each of them in how they should live after he was gone. Today, ethical wills most often take the form of a written preamble to family, designed to accompany more formal estate planning documents. These letters often include advice on life’s lessons learned, an identification of family heritage, exhortations and words of encouragement, or expressions of gratitude and faith, and in some cases, last-minute communications of forgive-

VIEWS Jerry Korabik ness and understanding. Ethical wills are often simple letters, kept confidential and revealed only when the estate plan is administered or read to family. Increasingly, individuals will go a step further and record audio or video messages, or even create written or photographic books for family members to have after funeral or burial arrangements conclude.

Individuals who may not want to go to the extent of creating a more formal ethical will often structure their estate plan in an “ethical manner” by attempting to incorporate their values into the design of their plan. For some, this means simple cash bequests to favorite charities, cash gifts to grandchildren or younger heirs as a “rainy day fund,” or bequests to establish funds restricted to education or similar personal objectives. Each of these structured gifts can impart an identification of one’s values into the overall estate plan. Another approach is to develop an identification of specific gifts of personal and household items to certain individuals, often with a short message as to the desired meaning of the chosen gift.For decades, estate planning focused simply on transferring assets at the lowest possible cost.

Today, more and more individuals seek to develop a deeper connective thread in their estate planning, and those who do find that ethical wills are the true treasure they want to pass on to their loved ones.

Lifting export ban on crude oil would be boon to economy THE WASHINGTON POST A bill lifting the United States’ irrational and outdated ban on exporting domestically produced crude oil passed a Senate committee last week, a day after House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, announced that he, too, supported bringing the country fully into the international oil market.

Congress imposed the ban amid the oil shocks of the 1970s in a desperate move to tame gasoline prices. Lately, the situation has changed: U.S. crude oil production rocketed up 74 percent from 2008 through 2014. That has led to a glut here at home, where crude oil is selling at a discount relative to world prices.

Yet the ban’s superficial logic still appears to hold some power – lifting the ex-

port restrictions, one might imagine, would send more oil abroad, which would raise gasoline prices here and hurt the economy.

In fact, experts predict gas prices would go down, based on the simple fact that you don’t put raw crude oil in your tank.

Consumers don’t buy crude oil. Refiners do. Domestic gasoline prices tend to track international, not domestic, oil prices.

In fact, a Government Accountability Office review released in July noted wide agreement among analysts that allowing crude exports would tend to decrease international oil prices, which is the way to depress gasoline prices.

That is why analysts counterintuitively predict that lifting the export ban would increase U.S. crude oil prices by $2 to $8 per

barrel but reduce U.S. gasoline prices by 1.5 cents to 13 cents per gallon.

More important than a few cents per gallon, however, are the significant economic benefits that the country would reap from a healthy energy production sector. A new analysis from IHS Energy finds that the sector’s supply chain spreads throughout the country – from engineers on site in North Dakota to heavy-duty equipment manufacturers in the Midwest to computer programmers in Massachusetts. Yet, with the export ban, the business faces the possibility of wholly unnecessary gridlock: The U.S. refining sector isn’t optimized to take the sort of crude oil that’s coming out of new wells. The obvious solution is to sell some of it to foreign refiners.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Steel eye home opener in new town, arena

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Chicago Steel players and officials snacked on Russian fare in the moments surrounding Tuesday’s announcement about the organization’s upcoming hockey odyssey.

A month before skating in their new home, Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena, for the first time in the regular season, the United States Hockey League’s Steel will represent the league at the Junior Club World Cup in Yekaterinburg, Russia from Aug. 24 through 30.

High-scoring Tanner Laczynski called the opportunity “a dream come true,” while fellow forward Ryan Blankemeier considered it “humbling.”

But first thing’s first. The Steel only had learned of the franchise’s relocation from

Bensenville to Geneva last week, and that topic offered equally enticing conversational fodder ahead of the Steel’s Sept. 26 home opener.

“At first, it was just a surprise, just coming from Bensenville,” Blankemeier said. “But I’m really excited about it. I think it’s a really good spot for us as far as having a better fan base than we did in Bensenville, better access to first-class facilities.

For a junior team, I don’t think there’s a better spot in the Chicagoland area, so I’m very excited to make that move.”

The USHL, the United States’ lone tier I junior hockey league, enjoys a perch at the “top of the developmental food chain,” said USA Hockey president Jim Smith, who was part of Tuesday’s contingent at the Russian Tea Time restaurant in downtown Chicago.

Now that operation of skilled athletes in thelr late teens to early 20s will have a base in Geneva. Last month, the league approved the Steel’s transfer of majority ownership to Larry Robbins, a hockey-loving hedge fund manager and Buffalo Grove product now living in New Jersey with his wife and four sons.

A marriage soon was brokered, as Fox Valley Ice Arena brass had coveted the return of junior hockey to the Tri-Cities for more than three years. The rink at 1996 S. Kirk Road hosted the Chicago Hitmen, a lower-tier junior team in the North American Hockey League, in 2011-12, but the relationship proved anything but harmonious.

Hitmen officials often conflicted with FVIA staff about several off-ice matters, and the club did not return for a

second season.

Knowing of the interest, the new Steel administrative group contacted its FVIA counterparts this summer, brimming about the opportunity for growth at a Fox Valley facility that includes an on-site youth program, fitness center and restaurant.

“I just think that there’s great community involvement,” said interim president John Egan, who is set to yield his position to former Dubuque (Iowa) Fighting Saints team president Dan Lehv on Aug. 16. “You can just see that there’s people there who are sports fans, and we think that we’re going to really provide a really compelling sports event for people to attend.”

Per data from the website hockeydb.com, the Steel ranked 16th in the 18-team USHL with an average attendance of 1,411 in 2014-15. The

Sioux Falls (S.D.) Stampede were first, attracting 6,376 fans a game.

“For the most part in Bensenville, it was 1,000 fans all spread out. It didn’t seem like it was 1,000 fans because it was so spread out,” Laczynski said. “I mean, it was an environment that you played in it and you liked it, but obviously, more fans would be something to look forward to.”

Egan referenced earlier meetings between the Steel and officials from their new neighbor along the Kirk Road corridor, the Kane County Cougars.

In 2013, the Cougars became the first Class-A affiliated baseball team to draw 10 million fans, leaving Egan and Co. confident about the marketing strategists in their own backyard, if need be.

“I know that nothing really huge weighs on each match now,” said Traxler, who won the Class 3A state championship at 182 pounds as a junior.

“I can just go out and do my thing. There’s no pressure when I go out there so I can just have fun and focus on having a good senior season.”

Traxler received an application for early admission to

Stanford, which was accepted July 1, but still did not accept any scholarship offer. Although he had offers from Virginia and Princeton, as well as with Northwestern and Michigan showing interest, Traxler did not want to wait any longer. After competing in the Fargo (North Dakota) Junior Nationals from July 18 to 25, the All-American Traxler decided there was no better time than the present.

“I was just so in love with Stanford,” Traxler said. “It kind of made it clear when I wasn’t too worried about what any schools were going to put together to offer me. When your dream school offers you, it’s pretty hard to turn down.”

He said he received input from parents and family as well as Marmion coach Donny Reynolds and the Cadets staff, keeping an open mind but not letting opinions from anyone sway his decision one way or another. But in the end, it was all Cardinal red for Traxler.

“I’m excited for this opportunity and I can’t wait to get out there,” he said.

Ever since he was in eighth grade, Nathan Traxler wanted to go to Stanford.

As he got older, the Marmion senior and St. Charles resident realized that dream could become a reality. Traxler, the 2015 Kane County Chronicle Wrestler of the Year, committed to NCAA Division I Stanford on Friday to fulfill what he called a lifelong dream.

“Ever since I can remember, it has always been my dream to go to Stanford,” Traxler said Monday. “I was always open to looking at other schools, but after visiting and getting an offer, I knew it was the right fit for me. It’s a great academic school and their wrestling program is in a great spot, so I felt comfortable making a commitment.”

After putting his recruitment process to the side during competition a few times, Traxler wanted to make his decision and focus solely on his senior wrestling season. So with his future at the California-based

Coaches act fast on thin vacation window

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com One thing most everyone looks forward to in the summer is a chance to get away and take a break from reality on vacation.

But work can often get in the way of that, much as it does for high school football coaches. With a busy summer schedule, coaches are often limited in the time to plan a family vacation or take time away from a sport to which they dedicate so much time.

However, the 10 days leading up to the first day of fall practices Aug. 10 are mandatory non-contact days between player and coach.

This usually provides for a popular time for coaches to get away before the season swings into full gear.

“It’s hard when you’re on a football staff to get away,”

Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “You really dedicate your time to these kids, so with camps and strength training to do everything to make sure the team is ready, it can be very difficult to plan a vacation.”

So with a little over a week of rest, it presents time for coaches to escape and take their minds off football, at least in some respects.

With the season this close, no coach will have his mind completely off football, but it will be a chance to spend much needed time with family and friends.

Piron, whose son, Peyton, is heading to college, and other two children are involved in summer sports, said this time of the year is exactly when the family tries to get away for a couple of days.

As of last week, Piron said the plan was to head to Mich-

igan to go to the dunes and visit some friends.

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski, who has grown comfortable with a the grueling summer schedule coaching the Vikings for the past 16 years, found an escape with family in Florida.

Wicinski joked that the Illinois weather was probably hotter than down south, and the hotter the better with twoa-day practices right around the corner.

“This is always my time to get away,” Wicinski said.

“Once the July 25 date hits for us, the coaches know that’s the time to bolt and get away.

With the schedule the way it is, you really have no choice but to use these 25 days to get where you need to be. There’s never much room to get away and it’s really been that way for me for about 27 years.”

After usually taking a

vacation during this time, a last-minute vacation was a little harder for St. Charles East coach Bryce Farquhar this summer.

Farquhar and his wife welcomed their third child, daughter Lila, on Friday. So with a recovering wife, along with the newborn child, this year is just a bit different for the second-year Saints coach.

“During this downtime it’s a good time to get away and take a break,” Farquhar said.

“Needless to say, we won’t be going this year, but with the kids, we usually try and pick somewhere random to enjoy ourselves.”

As with most coaches who try and take as the first day of practice grows near, it is hard to contain not only the excitement, but the desire to get back on the field.

Regardless of the temperature or the heavy work-

load that the sport brings, the coaches and players love football and all know, after being around it for a number of years, what it takes to be successful.

Take Farquhar, for example. With his other daughter wanting help opening a present as her father took a phone call, and with two other children needing attention in the house, Farquhar has still found time to send emails, review film and continue implementing his system and program mentality after being hired late in the 2014 offseason.

“It’s just the nature of what you do as a coach,” Farquhar said. “It’s nice to have a break and spend time with family, but you don’t really have much down time as a football coach. You can’t help but still be focused on your job.”

GENEVA – The Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2015 fifth round draft pick Ryan Burr, a righthander from Arizona State was promoted from Short-A Hillsboro to join the Cougars on Tuesday.

To make room on the 25-man roster for Burr, who was 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in Hillsboro, relief pitcher Cody Geyer (3-1, 1.08 ERA) was promoted to Advanced-A Visalia.

During his time at Arizona State, Burr recorded a school-record 38 saves as well as three All-Pac 12 honors.

ST. CHARLES – The Illinois Youth Soccer Association is partnering with United States women’s soccer star Abby Wambach to bring the World Cup champion to St. Charles on Nov. 15.

The event will consist of lunch and soccer games with Wambach at Sportsplex of St. Charles at 1400 Foundry St. Players must raise a certain amount of money, with a portion of the funds to benefit the IYSA’s Soccer for Success program.

Players will have opportunity, based on money raised, to sit with Wambach at lunch as well as receive autographs and photos. The top 32 overall fundraisers will have a chance to participate in a soccer game with Wambach.

In April, Geneva’s Graham Lillibridge signed as a defenseman with the league’s Muskegon (Michigan) Lumberjacks, while goaltender Stefanos Lekkas of Elburn played for Sioux Falls last season as he evaluates when he’ll make the jump to his college commitment at Vermont.

“It’s clearly a community … that cares a tremendous amount about their hockey and they’re just excited about it,” said new Steel coach Dan Muse, 33, who comes to the club after an extensive collegiate career that included six seasons on the Yale staff. “We believe that now we have a product on the ice that’s going to be fun and exciting to watch. You’re going to be seeing future stars playing at kind of at a special time in their development, a special time in their careers,

and I think we’re going to play a pretty exciting brand of hockey, too. I think the fans that come in and watch us, they’re going to walk out of there very impressed and very excited.”

Muse, Lehv and assistant coach Dallas Steward, among other Steel employees, already have uprooted their young families and relocated to the Fox Valley or are in the process of doing so.

The Steel’s Junior World Cup roster features five Illinoisans, including forward Nick Olczyk, son of former Blackhawks fan favorite and current television analyst Ed Olczyk, a U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer.

Father and son both were on hand for Tuesday’s announcement, with Ed Olczyk delivering the opening remarks.

Olczyk estimated he attends 15 to 20 USHL games a season, so keep your eyes peeled for him in Geneva. Just don’t stare too long, or you might miss a dazzling display of the future.

“I like this age group,” Muse said. “I think this is an age group of players that you can really make a big impact, with the fact that this the premier development league in the world for junior age players.”

UTIs commonly occur when bacteria from the rectum (such as E. coli) infect the skin around the opening of the urethra (the tube leading to the bladder). From there, the bacteria can work their way up to the bladder or kidneys.

A sharp drop in estrogen levels after menopause encourages bacteria to grow near the urethra.

This increases the tendency of older women to get UTIs. UTIs may also occur when urine pools in the bladder. This is more often a problem in older men than in older women. For example, an enlarged prostate gland can slow the outflow of urine and cause it to build up in the blad-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff der. In older women (and men), pooling of urine in the bladder may be caused by problems with the aging of nerves that cause the bladder to empty. Whatever the cause, pooling of urine in the bladder creates an ideal setting for bacteria to grow.

It’s not clear why an older person wouldn’t experience the same symptoms as someone younger.

It may be because UTI symptoms are caused by the immune system’s fight against the infection.

And the immune systems of older people may not fight as fiercely.

Another possibility is that conditions that affect the brain – such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease and dementia – affect the brain’s ability to feel or describe pain.

And, just as aging nerves may make the bladder less efficient in passing urine, those nerves also may not feel pain as effectively as they once did.

UTIs produce subtle signs even when common symptoms don’t occur. For example, an older

person may experience confusion or agitation, fatigue and loss of appetite. Other signs may include cloudy and foul-smelling urine, abnormal urine color or blood in the urine. Back pain may be a sign that the infection has spread to the kidneys.

UTIs should be treated with antibiotics. Left untreated, a UTI may spread to the kidneys and then cause a potentially fatal infection in the bloodstream.

To reduce your chances of developing another UTI, drink more fluids, which help wash away bacteria. Also, empty your bladder as soon as you have an urge to do so. You should also empty your bladder after sex, to flush out bacteria.

If you have frequent UTIs, consider using a vaginal estrogen cream. The estrogen will help discourage the growth of bacteria near the urethra. A low dose of certain antibiotics, taken every day for several months, can also help prevent future UTIs.

Stepmoms get a bad rap Dr. Wallace: I’m writing this letter in defense of all the wonderful stepmothers out there. We get a bad rap from the beginning. Stepchildren usually resent us from day one and, unfortunately, they quite commonly get “help” from their biological moms.

I have been a stepmom for almost five years and it has been a struggle from the beginning. When the kids were asked if they were OK with the idea of their dad and me marrying, they were all for it and wanted to attend the wedding.

The day I moved in with them after the wedding, everything changed. The ex-wife was throwing around accusations and innuendoes, before really knowing very much about me, and the kids’ attitudes completely changed. I tried everything. I figured there would be an adjustment period for everyone involved, so I was patient.

Even though almost five years have passed, my stepdaughter still badmouths me to all of her friends (I’ve overheard her). She lies about things that are said and done in our home, and my stepson seems to be doing many of the same things now.

I have always encouraged the kids and their dad to spend time together without me, maintaining that it’s an important part of their relationships. Yet when things don’t go their way or they don’t get what they want, Stepmother is always the “bad guy,” even if it’s their dad who made the decision.

I’ve done a lot for the kids and tried very hard to deal with their attitudes and treatment, and it’s exhausting. Believe me, I’m not alone.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace There are thousands of great stepmothers out there who are treated unfairly, too. The only avenue we have for support and advice is communication with each other, on message boards and in chat rooms.

I can only hope that the stepchildren who read this letter will have a little more compassion and understanding of just how hurtful they can be.

The only consolation, perhaps, is that many families struggle during children’s teen years, when separation and independence are their developmental challenges. But as a stepparent, you’re an easy target – for everything.

As if that role weren’t hard enough, society has added to your burden with the “evil” stereotype, traceable to the Grimm Brothers’ story of Cinderella, which, of course, was given new life by Walt Disney.

It appears that you have done all you can to earn the trust and love of your stepchildren. I hope you can continue to have a positive attitude and be the very best stepmother possible to these children, even in trying situations. When they “grow up,” they’ll appreciate you.

How should the play proceed in four spades after West leads the heart king?

In the auction, over West’s takeout double, North’s response of two no-trump showed four or more spades and game-invitational values, an excellent idea initially proposed by Alan Truscott. (Note that two no-trump is not needed to show a big balanced hand, because North would start with redouble. Also, what North would do with a stronger hand will be covered tomorrow.)

South has four losers: two spades, one heart and one diamond. Without this irritating heart lead, declarer could have driven out the diamond ace and discarded his heart loser on dummy’s third diamond. That won’t work now.

Some players would win the first trick, play a club to hand, and lead the spade queen with an illegal furtive look. They would hope that West, with the doubleton spade king (or ace), would put up his honor. It might work, but should not.

South has one legitimate possibility: finding clubs 3-3 and either opponent with a singleton trump honor. After winning the first trick, declarer plays a club to his ace, cashes the club king, and overtakes his club jack with dummy’s queen. Then he leads the 13th club and pitches his heart loser.

Either East or West may ruff, but it costs one of the defense’s two trump tricks. South loses only two spades and one diamond.

The French call this “le coup de l’agonie.”
