By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Members of the Kaneland School District 302 Board voted Monday night to approve the resignation of Superintendent Jeff Schuler, but it was not a unanimous decision.

Two members – Tony Valente and Veronica Bruhl – voted against the consent agenda item at the special board meeting called at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

It was the board’s first meeting since Schuler announced that he was leaving to accept an offer to become the next superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville School District 200.

Four members – Teresa Witt, Peter Lopatin, Pedro Rivas and Gale Pavlak – voted to accept Schuler’s resignation, as well as the other consent agenda items approving new

Bruhl said she has heard from residents who were upset that the Schuler announcement came so close to the beginning of the new school year, which will be Aug. 20. Schuler’s resignation will be effective Sept. 1.

Jeff Schuler “People are very, very unhappy,” Bruhl said.

Schuler in 2011 signed a contract extension, which began in the 2012-13 school year and ran through the 2015-16 year. The contract called for Schuler to make $158,525 in his first year at Kaneland.

In 2013, he received a raise that would push his salary to $175,000. At Wheaton, his base

salary will be $225,000.

Valente said he had a problem with long-term contracts, saying there was “no guarantee that people stay.”

Valente pointed out that he was against the contract at the time, but “of course, I was shot down, as usual.”

“The board made a commitment that was not returned,” said Valente, who added that “in the future, we should not give long-term contracts” or, he said, make sure such contracts are honored.

Witt, the board’s vice president who acted as the president in Krauspe’s absence, said she noted Valente’s objection. But she said it “is not unusual for people to leave.”

She praised Schuler saying she was “not surprised Jeff was recruited and eventually hired.” She said he engaged the community “to a new level.” She praised him for increasing rigor at the high

school level.

“As a parent, I am forever grateful,” she said.

The board has scheduled an additional meeting Aug. 18 and still plans to meet, as scheduled, Aug. 25.

The board Monday went into executive session for more than 90 minutes, a move Valente fought and voted against. But after the executive session, Valente said it was justified. He said he voted against the resignation because it would break the contract, and “why give contracts if you don’t honor them?”

As far as Schuler’s replacement, Witt said it was premature to talk about a timetable or whether a long-term contract would be offered. She said Schuler did a good job and added “he leaves us in a much better place than when he came.”

“Wheaton Warrenville’s gain is our loss,” Witt said.

North Aurora approves four-story hotel plans

Trustees on Monday unanimously approved an amendment that will reduce impact fees for the developer along with creating a separate liquor license classification so the hotel owner/operator can apply for a liquor license.

North Aurora LLP would pay $90,000 less in traffic, water and storm sewer connection fees.

Motels of North Aurora wants to build a four-story, 92room Fairfield Marriott Inn and Suites hotel on Orchard Road in North Aurora, across the street from the North Aurora Auto Mall. The developer also owns a Holiday Inn off Orchard Road in Aurora.

Trustees also approved site plans for the development, as well as a special use permit.

They approved a deviation to the height limit of 35 feet

to allow for the proposed hotel, which will have a peak height of 55.25 feet. The majority of the hotel will be 45 feet in height, North Aurora Community Development Director Mike Toth said.

“Staff finds the additional building height will not only provide the applicant with the appropriate number of rooms for their business model, but also allow the building to have a greater visual presence from I-88,” Toth said in a memo to trustees.

Staff had proposed a fee reduction of $78,555, based on

traffic impact analysis and sewer usage fees. But attorney John Philipchuck, who is representing Motels of North Aurora LLP, said that the developer needed a fee reduction closer to $100,000 in order to start the project.

After that discussion, staff looked for additional ways to cut fees. Village Administrator Steve Bosco said hotels require rather large water connections.

“A 4- to 6-inch water connection fee would cost between $20,990 and $35,870,” Bosco said.

Geneva refinances electric bonds to save nearly $90K GENEVA – In a split vote Monday, aldermen approved an ordinance to issue $2 million to refinance an electrical system alternate bond issue from 2007.

The refinancing will save the city $89,477, said Raphaliata McKenzie of Speer Financial, the city’s bond advisor.

It exceeds the target percentage savings of 3 percent and the minimum savings of $75,000.

LOCAL BRIEFS River Corridor hosts annual fundraiser ST. CHARLES – The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles will be conducting its annual Bob Leonard Memorial fundraising event at 8 a.m. Saturday at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave., St. Charles. The savings over the remaining debt is 4.607 percent, she said. It does not add debt, nor extend the bond beyond its payoff in 2021.

The negotiated bond sale cost of the remaining General Obligation Alternate Revenue Bonds, Series 2007 was $1.9 million to Robert W. Baird and Company Inc., of Naperville.

Speer’s fee is $42,000, McKenzie said, after the city’s savings.

The original loan was for $2.45 million, according to

the bond ordinance.

“We had a great sale,” McKenzie said. “It retires in less than seven years [with] almost $90,000 in savings.”

Still, the council voted 3-11 in favor, including a yes vote from Mayor Kevin Burns, after discussion about competitively bidding the bond sale versus negotiating the sale.

Aldermen voting “no” were 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings, 3rd Ward Aldermen Mary Seno and Dean Kilburg.

“We are making a $2 mil-

lion decision on a bond issue,” Cummings said. “If we were making a $2 million decision on anything else – a truck, a building, road paving, curbs – we would go out for competitive bids. .... Simply because it’s bonds, I don’t think we get to skate on our duty and go with a negotiated issue.”

McKenzie brought comparisons of negotiated and competitive bids in the past month, showing the savings were comparable.

But Cummings did not

agree.

“I’m not saying that we got bad numbers from Baird,” Cummings said. “But I am saying we owe it to the taxpayers to go with competitively bid issue, not negotiated ones.”

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said the negotiated sale was a “for sure savings.”

“Rather than taking a chance, going through the [bid] process, getting perhaps rejected,” McKittrick said.

St. Charles City Council approves 12K event request in 8-2 vote

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday approved an application tied to a 12K event over the concerns of two aldermen.

Council members voted 8-2 in favor of street and parking lot closures, as well as use of amplification equipment for the 2014 St. Charles 12K of Christmas. Ward 4 Aldermen Jim Martin and Jo Krieger voted against the motion.

Krieger said downtown merchants told her that the closures would affect their holiday season revenue be-

cause customers will have a harder time getting to their stores on the day of the event, which is scheduled for Dec. 6.

St. Charles Deputy Chief Steve Huffman worked with the Downtown St. Charles Partnership and Multisport Madness, the event’s organizer, to change the event’s start time from the afternoon to 8:30 a.m. The closures would be in effect from 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 6, Huffman said.

Hallie Hudson, development associate for TriCity Family Services, shared concerns about the conflict at the city council’s July 28 committee meeting. On Monday, she said the agency feels that Multisport Madness will be respectful of the Snowflake Shuffle.

“They are tapping into a different market, and we understand that now,” Hudson said.

No one from TriCity Family Services or Multisport Madness were in attendance Monday at the City Council meeting, but the two groups were at the July 28 committee meeting.

“I’m glad we can coexist,” Multisport Madness President Danny Delgado said in a phone interview after the meeting.

Delgado said he has not had any contact with TriCity Family Services since the July 28 meeting, but he said Multisport Madness intends to help offset any loss TriCity Family Services might have because of the same-day races.

Delgado said it took two years for one of his group’s races in Batavia to make a profit, but officials were eventually able to donate to the Batavia Fireworks Fund after building up the number of race registrants.

A BRIDE’S TRIUMPH Geneva woman fights through cancer, savors wedding day

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Michelle Gillespie stood in the bright sunshine of a warm August afternoon. Her white wedding dress glittered as she exchanged vows with her now husband, Ronald King, while about 80 friends and family cheered.

The face that weddings happen in summertime in the outdoor chapel at Mill Creek Golf Club is not unusual, but this particular wedding, on Saturday, had special importance: Michelle King, 29, of Geneva, was supposed to get married last year in August, but about six weeks before the big day, she found a lump on the right side of her neck.

An ultrasound and pathology report confirmed it was Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

So instead of a wedding, she was prepped for surgery at Loyola University Medical Center. Instead of a honeymoon, she began chemotherapy.

“It was supposed to be a very small one-inch incision.

Then they got in there and … [they] took out a lymph node the size of a baseball,” King said. “I was a normal, healthy 28-year-old, and this just came out of nowhere. There were no signs, no symptoms. I don’t know how I did not feel that baseball in my neck.”

As she received chemo and lost her long blonde hair, King said she changed her outlook on life.

“I was definitely someone who would stress over little things and small things,” King said.

“Everything I thought was important and would stress out about and dwell on – this makes you realize not to take everything so seriously. Every small thing you need to have control over – you don’t need control over. Let the

••• Last year was rough in other ways for the couple.

A year before she was diagnosed, her grandfather, Kenneth Anderson of Batavia, who helped raise her, died of esophageal cancer. Then on Aug. 13, the day her chemo port was installed, her future mother-in-law, Laura Osborne, died unexpectedly in an accident in Florida.

A week later, her daughter, Kayla, then 6, was admitted to urgent care with a ruptured appendix. The little girl recovered and participated in the wedding as one of the flower girls. On Aug. 26, King started

chemo and Oct. 1, her future husband was hospitalized with viral meningitis. He also recovered.

“2013 was not our year,” King said.

••• But 2014 came with new hope and promise. Her last chemo was Jan. 29, and her last scan in March showed she was in remission – no sign of cancer.

She was hired for a new job she interviewed for in November to work in customer service at the front desk at the Geneva Park District.

“I was honest and upfront about it, and they agreed to hold the position for me,” Mi-

chelle King said.

She and Ronald King have been together eight years.

Before her job at the park district, she was a stay-at-home mom for their daughter, Kayla.

Her now-husband, Ronald King, 30, works as a heavy equipment operator at Waste Management’s Batavia plant.

When they decided to get married and had to postpone the wedding because of the cancer, neither would back out.

“She had the courage that is required of a relatively young person who has other things on her mind, ‘Gee, I’m getting married,’ yet still has the wherewithal to do the right thing and go through the evaluation and all the scariness that goes along with that.”

••• As Michelle and Ronald King stood in front of their officiant Kevin Chapman, he noted their challenges.

“The struggles this family faced in the past year would have devastated others,” Chapman said. “But with constant encouragement from each other, they have overcome and are ready now to carry on.”

Then to the gathered crowd of family and friends, Chapman said, “Your being here is a true sign that they are loved by many.”

Amid the hugs and tears after the ceremony, Michelle King said “it was like crossing the finish line.”

something like that to happen to somebody that age.”

Michelle had quit smoking a year and a half before the diagnosis, lost weight and was committed to a more healthy lifestyle, Ronald King said.

Though they would have just as soon passed on facing cancer, Ronald King said facing up to it helped them realize how strong they truly were.

“It’s helped us grow and helped us realize if we can get through this, we can get through anything,” Ronald King said. “I think she has really proven her strength – not that she had anything to prove of how strong a person she really is.”

If there was a bright spot in his illness, it was that he recovered quickly and was back to work the next week, Ronald King said.

“We were just so strong together,” Ronald King said.

“It’s amazing how we got through that year.”

••• Dr. Kevin Barton at Loyola University Medical Center, who treated Michelle King, said Hodgkin lympho-

ma peaks from age 15 to 35 and then again in the 60s and 70s.

“We don’t really know the cause,” Barton said. “The incidence is very low, about 5,000 per year in the U.S. The goal is to cure them. Having gone through the therapy, [Michelle] has a pretty high probability of being cured.”

Barton, who also is an associate professor of medicine, hematology and oncology, said Michelle’s decision to bring her story to the public can have a lifesaving effect of raising awareness of Hodgkin lymphoma – or any cancer – among young people.

“Her hope was to shine a light on this sort of thing,” Barton said. “It is important, in part, because this demographic of 20-somethings are not folks that do not have much experience going to doctors ... of getting sick and having a life-threatening disease.”

Barton said despite Michelle King not having a lot of symptoms, she went to a doctor after she found the lump.

Then she went to a surgeon for a biopsy, and then saw a hematologist for evalu-

Senger challenges Foster to four debates

the crucial issues facing the country.

She listed job growth and fiscal issues within government as probable topics for

debate in the release, and she highlighted several honors awarded to her by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business.

The Republican candidate accused Foster of being “unwilling to agree to a debate,” according to the release.

In an emailed statement, Senger said, “Foster seems to be content to hide in the shadows and hope voters don’t notice he is missing in

action.”

Foster’s campaign manager, Craig Belden, said in an emailed statement this was the first time Senger’s office had requested a debate and called allegations implying Foster’s refusal to debate “absolutely false.”

He also said Foster has been busy engaging with the district and cited a Big Brothers Big Sisters event and a Puerto Rican heritage festival as examples of constitu-

ent events.

“Bill Foster has always agreed that it is important to have the facts out on the table … and just like his other races, we will agree to debate at a time and place that works for both candidates,” Belden said in the statement.

If Foster agrees to Senger’s terms, two debates would be held in DuPage County and two in Will County.

The general election will be in November.

Jim will be remembered for his devotion to his family--his personal family and, for the past 15 years, his Prairie Landing family. His sense of humor was unparalleled, and his approach to life was to embrace simplicity. He touched every person he encountered through his gentlemanly demeanor and his kindness. Everywhere he and Liz went--even on their honeymoon on the Cayman Islands--someone would recognize Jim as that great guy they had met at the golf club, even if they had met him just once.

Timothy (Tim) Parrilli, passed away early Sunday morning, July 20, 2014, at the age of 63.

He died after a short battle with esophageal cancer.

Timothy was born on January 31, 1951, to Joseph and Barbara (Engvalson) Parrilli of Oak Park, Illinois. He married Charlotte Fraley on October 8, 1971, in Naperville, Illinois.

From stacking cheerios as a toddler to remodeling and constructing new homes, Tim was a

carpenter and builder all his life.

Tim owned a successful contracting business with his brother for many years in Maple Park, Illinois.

He was a hard working husband, father of five, and grandfather of five.

Tim had many passions in life from crafting with wood and enjoying the outdoors, to talking politics and history, inspiring his friends and family with his animated stories; better than a history teacher. Tim could tell even the smallest details about almost any historical event, especially the Civil War and WWII. Tim was especially passionate about his antique cars. He owned, restored, and meticulously cared for his cars and he loved to drive and show them off at car shows.

Tim left his mark on this world in many ways, but the most important way to him was by his family. His wife, Charlotte; daughters, Julie (Coby), Elizabeth (Ryan) Bobowiec, and Mary; son, Daniel (Tina); as well as grandsons, Chris, Cory and Owen; and granddaughters, Calabria and Olivia.

He had an impact on many people and will continue to lead his family through their own lives with his wisdom.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Chris; and daughter, Kathleen Rose.

Eleanor Hill, of Geneva, 98, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 2, 2014, with her family by her side. She was born August 18, 1915, in Spring Hill, Illinois.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings; her husband, Marcell Hall in 1959; her husband Maurice Hill in 1991; and her son Ronald Hall in 1996.

She is survived by six children, 16 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

LOCAL BRIEFS Roads set for sealing work beginning this week Randall Road is among three Kane County roads targeted for crack sealing work beginning this week, weather permitting.

The county’s crack sealing program involves filling and sealing roadway cracks to extend the life of the pavement, states a news release from the Kane County Division of Transportation.

Subject to change, the following roads are scheduled to be treated in the following order: Davis Road from Highway 30 to Scott Road; Randall Road from Oak to Dean street; and Jericho Road from Highway 30 to Orchard Road. Work is expected to last about four weeks. The roads will remain open during treatment, but temporary daily lane closures may occur.

Motorists should add time to their commutes, expect delays, watch for construction activity and obey flaggers while traveling through work areas.

Milling, paving work to begin on Randall Road ST. CHARLES – Milling and paving work on Randall Road from Ferson Creek Bridge to Red Haw Lane is expected to

begin this week.

Construction hours are set from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily for about three weeks, weather permitting, states a news release from the Kane County Division of Transportation.

The resurfacing process will include removal of 1½ inches of existing pavement to allow for the new surface, and about 2¼ inches of asphalt will be placed over an oil application to provide for a smooth riding surface.

Their business, CME Handworks Inc., specializes in producing reproductions of antique and classic hand tools with modern features of their own design.

Two boys watched as Yonker worked on the stool. After wedging a piece of wood into another, he said it will never come out again once the legs are added.

“That will last 100 years,” Mary Yonker told the boys.

CAMPTON HILLS – Even after 15 years of collecting tools, Dennie Cole considers himself a beginner.

That’s why the Bridgeview resident attends Garfield Farm Museum’s Antique Tool Show, which attracts, who he calls, the professors or the professional tool collectors.

“I learn stuff from them,” Cole said Sunday, standing behind tables displaying his collection.

For 20 years, the show has aimed to bring together the enthusiasm and knowledge of the Early American Industries Association and the MidWest Tool Collectors Association to educate the public in the tools, methods and technologies used as the Industrial Revolution and Industrial Age developed.

It is the only show in the Midwest that both associations participate in and that is also open to the public, ac-

“All today,” he said but noted he has many more tools at home.

Whowell, who turned 81 Sunday, said his collection began years ago when he acquired tools from his 93-yearold neighbor after her death.

The tools had belonged to her father, who was born in 1870 and likely began his tool collection in the 1880s, Whowell said.

Whowell has traced the history of his tools. He not only knows when they were made but how they were used.

“When I find a tool, I try to learn as much about it as I can,” he said.

Gaetano’s Batavia set to open Tuesday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Gaetano’s Batavia is set to open Tuesday in downtown Batavia.

The upscale, Italian fusion restaurant is set to open Tuesday at 15 E. Wilson St. in the former space of The Rhino Room. In January, aldermen approved a $25,000 tax increment financing district grant and a $75,000 60-month loan for owners Gaetano and Wendy DiBenedetto, who live in Batavia.

The couple sought the funds because they expected improvements and equipment installation at the space to exceed $220,000. The loan carries an annual interest rate of 2.75 percent.

tano’s restaurant in Forest Park. Gaetano’s has been rated as one of the best Italian restaurants in the Chicago area.

According to Gaetano’s website, executive chef Gaetano Di Benedetto is a native of the coastal town of Bagheria, located just outside of Palermo, Sicily. He is a teacher of culinary art in both Italian culinary colleges and colleges here in the United States.

The Rhino Room closed last year. It had opened in early 2012 in the building at the corner of Wilson Street and North River Street that previously housed Limestone Coffee & Tea. In March 2013, Limestone reopened at its new location at 8 W. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia, in the former home of Lane Allen Architects.

Ploppert, an elementary school teacher in Batavia, said he wants to serve because a strong library is vital to the community.

“It’s something that needs to be strong,” Ploppert said.

“Literacy – not just traditional reading and writing – but in technology and how the library helps with e-readers and classes ... to the citizens of the district.”

Ploppert said the library has come to a crossroads when its downtown location may not be able to meet all the district’s needs.

“I have really become passionate about the library as an educator,” Ploppert said. “It’s a tremendous resource, a community center, not a place to just check out books.”

Ploppert lost two bids to be elected as an alderman in the 1st Ward and currently was appointed to the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission.

Bruggeman is the human resources and risk manager for the Batavia Park District.

“As I am a public servant in my profession, serving on the library board is a great way to share my skills and my expertise with my community,” Bruggeman said. “I have always been an avid reader. I’m in a book club for busy moms who love to read. My family loves to walk downtown and visit the library on weekends.”

Ellenbaum said he would like to be considered for the vacancy because he loves libraries and has experience as a library trustee in the 1990s in another district.

“The choices the library is facing, whether to move or not ... I was a trustee in Glen Ellyn. I evaluated the building, the plans for a new building,” Ellenbaum said. “I also worked with a consultant that did a village-wide survey.”

Ellenbaum said he is a retired professor of anthropology from College of DuPage.

Schmid is a past employee of the Geneva Library from 2003 until March, when she left to work as a law librarian at the Kane County Law Library.

The names of the six were released after the Kane County Chronicle filed a Freedom of Information Act request.

The library would only release the names and no other information.

The six are Jennifer Bruggeman, Robert McQuillan, Ellen Fultz Schmid, Zachary Ploppert, Charles O. Ellenbaum and William Broderick.

“I am somebody who will always has the community’s interest at heart,” McQuillan said.

Casting call for upcoming Playhouse 38 production GENEVA – Playhouse 38 has a casting call for an adult production of “The Groom Has Cold Feet.”

Congress’ vacation will interrupt lazy schedule BLOOMBERG NEWS Happy summer vacation, Congress. Clearly, you need a break.

The Republican-led House was so exhausted from passing legislation allowing it to sue President Barack Obama for overstepping his executive authority that it could barely muster the energy to use its own authority to address the humanitarian crisis at the Mexican border, which it did in a meaningless vote after the Senate had recessed for August.

All this exhaustion has left Americans exasperated. Has any Congress ever produced so much drama and so little legislation?

It’s unlikely its productivity will improve when members return from their August recess, not least because Congress is in session only a few days between then and Election Day. Eventually it will have to do some real work – approving a federal budget, say – but that may have to wait for a lame-duck session in November.

In the meantime, there’s what it did (and didn’t do) last week.

Congress’s failure on immigration has been well-documented.

Less heralded, but equally impressive, was its cowardice on the Highway Trust Fund.

Rather than adopt a multiyear spending plan to upgrade the nation’s aging roads, bridges and mass-transit networks, or the Senate’s patch to keep the highway fund solvent through November, Congress passed a 10-month extension financed largely by a fiscal gimmick. It’s the worst possible outcome.

In recent years, Congress has passed 11 short-term patches to keep the fund solvent. The fund kept running dry because its major revenue source – an 18.4-cents-a-gallon gas tax adopted in 1993 – has been devalued by

inflation and improvements in fuel efficiency.

In April, Obama sent Congress a four-year, $302 billion plan to upgrade the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

To pay for the plan, he proposed raising revenue through changes to the corporate tax code. Both ideas landed in Congress with a thud, and both houses sat on their hands as the July 31 deadline for action approached. After July 31, payments to states would have slowed down, which would have delayed some construction projects if states and localities – which provide three of every four transportation dollars – didn’t cover the spread.

That would have been unfortunate. More unfortunate still is Congress’s solution.

By extending the fund until May 2015, Congress has bypassed the best hope for raising revenue: the lame-duck session after the November elections. Any hope of raising the gas tax, the most sensible way to pay for transportation expenses, is now all but dead. And the prospect for other politically fraught steps – such as raising user fees on roads – also took a major dive.

Making matters worse, Congress is paying for the 10-month extension with an accounting trick called “pension smoothing,” which produces more taxable income over the short run and less over the long run.

Today’s windfall is tomorrow’s shortfall. So much for investing in the future.

The Senate could easily have decided to stay in session and negotiate with the House for a more responsible plan. Instead, fearful that they would be blamed for any delays in funding, senators quickly approved the House’s plan and left town. Life is all about setting priorities, after all.

And what could be more important than summer vacation?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR HULTGREN’S RECORD NOT KIND TO ANIMALS To the Editor: If you’re planning to vote for Randy Hultgren in November and also care about animals, you might want to reconsider.

Many residents in Illinois’ 14th Congressional District have no idea that their congressman is the only elected official in Illinois who currently has a zero rating from The Humane Society on its scorecard for the 113th Congress for consistently taking anti-animal positions.

The most offensive of these positions is Hultgren’s support for the notorious King amendment. Although ultimately defeated in Congress by those more compassionate, Hultgren nevertheless voted for a version of the farm bill that included the cruel, overreaching King amendment.

While painful to describe, voters need to understand just how potentially destructive the King amendment is. In one fell swoop this amendment would eliminate laws that protect farm animals from spending their entire lives in containers (“cruel cages”) only slightly larger than their bodies. The cages are so small, these animals are unable to

turn around or lie down. It threatened protection of puppies and dogs in puppy mills and state bans forbidding the sale of horses for slaughter for human consumption. You get the idea.

Sadly characteristic for Rep. Hultgren and far too many other politicians, support for the King amendment was a nod to “Big Ag.” Wouldn’t it be great if the people we elect to represent us did not compromise our values? For many of us, those values include protecting animals from cruelty, enjoying an environment not contaminated with pesticides and ensuring that farm workers aren’t turned into modern-day slaves.

How a person treats animals is a window into their true character. Are you really willing to vote for someone who voted for cruel cages?

If Rep. Hultgren turned his back on animals before, would he do it again?

Politicians rarely change their character, and Hultgren’s voting record clearly demonstrates his priorities are with the lobbyists and corporations.

Rakkar, a Canadian whose parents are from India, is seeking to make his mark in a sport with hardly any precedent of professional success for ballplayers of Indian descent. Just a week into his time with the Kane County Cougars, Rakkar is happy to play the dual role of reliever and role model.

its inception. The program, housed on the RHF grounds, strives to introduce children between ages 5 and 17 to golf.

In 2002, Rich commissioned a team from the foundation to Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn., site of the LPGA Solheim Cup, a U.S. against Europe match-play event held every two years.

He didn’t know much about Solheim then, but knew Jerry Rich future Cups were in need of host sites.

Positive feedback from the traveling group prompted Rich to contact then-LPGA commissioner Ty Votaw about drafting a proposal for Rich Harvest Farms’ Solheim bid. In town for an LPGA event in Chicagoland a few weeks later, Votaw visited the grounds for about 2½ hours.

“I remember bringing him to his car and he rolls down the window. I shook his hand, and he says, ‘Jerry, we’re going to come back,’ “ Rich said.

The LPGA agreed, lauding the acumen of Rich and his staff and awarding the course with the 2009 Solheim Cup. Anna Nordqvist of Sweden, part of the runner-up team at the inaugural International Crown at Maryland’s Caves Valley last month, turned pro a shortly before Solheim 2009 and said her first appearance there “really boosted my career.”

Five years later, the 2016 Crown hopeful Nordqvist still keeps an eye on what’s happening in Sugar Grove.

“I’m very excited to hear what Mr. Rich is doing for the game and how he’s trying to get more young girls to pick up the game,” she said.

Faulhaber’s helping hands: Batavia girls volleyball coach

Lori Trippi-Payne writes that recent Batavia graduate Audrey Faulhaber “has really outdone herself this year,” and she’s not referring to anything on the court.

Faulhaber, preparing for her freshman season at St. Olaf (Minn.), continues making an impression on the Athletes Against Hunger campaign by spearheading donation efforts to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

About 35 Batavia High School students, grouped into teams of 2-to-3 members, left bags at Batavia residents’ doorsteps and also set up a table for walk-up donations in front of BHS on July 19.

With Faulhaber also reaching out to the Batavia girls soccer and girls tennis teams, the effort produced 2,426 food items, well more than the 1,100-plus donated last year.

Rich Harvest Farms owner Jerry Rich developed the International Crown alongside LPGA officials, so bringing the match-play event to his Sugar Grove course in 2016 came as no surprise.

Welcoming the 2015 Palmer Cup, on the other hand, actually got Rich stirring.

When organizers asked about bringing the Ryder Cup-style event pitting top U.S. and European collegians to RHF, he countered with a follow-up question: why?

The answer Rich received gets to the heart of why RHF has been hosting marquee golf tournaments for the past several years.

“They said, ‘Mr. Rich, what you do for junior golf and growing the game, it was a no-brainer by the Palmer.

This is where Arnold Palmer wants to bring it, because that’s his charter,’ ” Rich said. “ ‘To be able to teach these university players, the 20 that will be here, that they’ve got to learn to give back.’ That Kids Golf foundation really made it happen.”

Beebe supports ex-Bill Reed in Canton

A Kaneland alumnus and Aurora Christian’s offensive coordinator, Beebe traveled to Canton, Ohio for the Saturday night ceremony honoring Reed, a fellow longtime former Buffalo Bills wide receiver who entered the Hall with six other inductees.

“One thing about Andre, and I’ve always said this to ev-

erybody, he just has absolutely no weakness in his game, you know,” Beebe said. “Caught the ball well.

Today, Beebe and his wife, Diana, planned to visit with Hall of Fame Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and his wife, Jill, before returning home to Aurora.

Kelly connected with Reed for 67 touchdown passes from 1986 to 1996 – then the third-highest total for a quar-

terback-receiver tandem in NFL history – and traveled to Canton amid a battle with jaw cancer.

Kelly is set to undergo an MRI in the coming weeks, with the procedure determining whether the cancer has left his body.

The Canton crowd greeted Kelly with what Beebe called a “very touching” reception.

“What’s special about the whole weekend was just seeing Jim again and the whole applause,” Beebe said. “I mean, the standing ovation, it was over five minutes … when they introduced him on the stage at the Hall of Fame.”

Of course, that was par for the course as Beebe, a six-time Super Bowl participant in the 1990s – four with the Bills, two with the Green Bay Packers – surveyed the entire crowd.

“I mean, it had to be 80 to 90 percent Buffalo Bill fans,” Beebe said. “It was incredible.

It felt like a home game back in the old stadium.”

Next week, Beebe will return to the ACS sidelines as the team opens fall practices.

“Yeah,” he said. “Comes quick.”

Beebe stepped down from his head coaching position in the offseason but will remain as offensive coordinator.

been doing,” Rakkar said. “I wouldn’t mind even meeting the guys at some point.”

Rakkar isn’t yet Hollywood – or Bollywood – material.

But the closer he comes to the

majors, the more his family’s heritage figures to draw attention.

Rakkar doesn’t object, but he and his family are more focused on the game. They’re a baseball family now.

History filled with players who couldn’t cut it in the majors after successful stint in minors he arrived in 2011. It’s only a matter of time before Bryant and other prospects get their shots.

I’ve heard some fans and observers insist the Cubs will be a World Series contender by 2017. Based on what, I’m not sure. Minor-league stats, I guess. Or their own alcohol intake.

Baez’s arrival officially will start the hysteria. Some of you have taken Baseball America’s top-prospects list to heart and carved out vacation time for future Octobers.

Any way we might tamp down some of that excitement? You know, for the sake of the kid?

I have a feeling I’m whispering in a gale.

Epstein’s stance always has been that the march of prospects to the majors would be a deliberate process, that no one would be rushed. Hopefully, the sole reason Baez is a Cub is because Epstein thinks he’s ready. Any other reason isn’t a good one.

When Epstein arrived here

VIEWS Rick Morrissey three seasons ago, he laid out a plan heavy on building the minor-league system. Now that several of his draft picks and acquisitions have put up good numbers in the minors, many of you think this means a World Series title can’t be too far behind. Thus, when Baez arrives from Class AAA Iowa with his .260 batting average, 23 home runs and 80 RBI, some of you are sure he’ll pick up where he left off.

Two months with the Cubs this season, and he’ll be on autopilot for 2015. That’s the best-case scenario, the only scenario for some of you.

History is filled with players who couldn’t cut it in the majors after successful minor-league careers. There are all sorts of reasons for that, starting with the fact that big-league baseball is filled with great players and the minors aren’t. But an in-

ability to deal with pressure can’t be dismissed — certainly not on the North Side, where Cubs fans have been waiting for someone to lead them to that whole World Series thing. Wrigley Field, when it’s filled, can feel like a grand piano sitting on a player’s chest.

So, back to the original question: Will you give Baez breathing room? You certainly didn’t give it to Felix Pie, Corey Patterson, Bobby Hill and Kosuke Fukudome when they were newcomers.

When they exhibited any signs of ability, you projected it into Hall of Fame careers.

The crashes weren’t pretty. I think of them like I do child actors. Somehow, Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro have survived.

The pressure can’t be understated. Cubs fans no longer are content with sunshine and beer. They want victories, which is why attendance has dropped so precipitously. Old-time Cubs fans not only were willing to wait until next year, they

thought next year would be the year, against all reason and evidence. That was pressure, too, however of a more benign kind.

Keep this in mind: Not all of Epstein’s high draft picks will succeed – perhaps most of them won’t – but there’s a chance some mid- to lowerround choice will turn into a superstar. So don’t put all your eggs in Baez’s basket.

You’ll be doing him a favor.

The Cubs surely didn’t want him getting his first taste of the big leagues in front of needy fans at Wrigley Field, so that will occur at Coors Field against the Rockies.

His first appearance in front of a home crowd should come in a three-game series against the Rays, which startsFriday.

What do you say we give him some room when he does get here?

No, I mean really breathe, without weighing him down with all of your hopes and dreams, specifically the dream in which he walks on water to shake hands with Kris Bryant, who is holding a cup of wine that a split-second ago was water.

I’m talking to you, Mr. Cubs Fan, along with your wife and the one son whom you demanded – under threat of divorce – be named ‘‘Ryno.’’

Is there any possibility that you will give Baez room to grow without holding him to impossible standards?

I wonder. I seriously wonder.

The Cubs called up Baez on Monday, and he’s expected to make his bigleague debut today in Denver against the Rockies. It will be a huge day for the 21-yearold infielder, as well as for president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, who has been selling the idea of homegrown products since

Mays still takes long snapping reps at the beginning of each practice. He started long snapping in junior high as a way to make it to varsity as a freshman at Eudora High School in Lawrence, Kansas.

He ended up playing varsity his freshman year anyways, as both a long snapper and a linebacker.

Looking back, he’s glad he made the decision to take up snapping duties.

DeKALB – Boomer Mays is entering is second full season as Northern Illinois’ starting middle linebacker, and the junior is a rare breed in college football.

Mays, who is expected to be a key member of the Huskies’ defense, also spends time as the team’s third-string long snapper.

In fact, Mays was recruited to NIU primarily as a long snapper by Jerry Kill’s staff.

However, he started getting reps at linebacker during camp as a true freshman, and the time kept going up from there.

Mays redshirted his first season in DeKalb in 2011, and started four games as a redshirt freshman, finishing with 82 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

“Really, like everyone else, high school to college, you have to adjust to the speed, you’ve got to learn the game,” Mays said. “It’s a different style. It was just a mental aspect. Finding people watching them, and the speed of the game, adapting to college football.”

When talking about Mays’ play, the one thing that stands out to Huskies linebackers coach Kevin Kane – who was a linebacker and long snapper himself at Kansas – is Mays’ physicality.

Collectors in the 1950s usually wanted furniture and accessories in earlier styles, or perhaps a piece that represented the family’s background, like a German stein or English china. But today collectors can see and buy items from all over the world on the Internet, and auctions have become more international. Carved wooden furniture from 18th- and 19th-century China, painted chests from Scandinavia and “Black Forest” benches and tables with large, carved bears from Switzerland (although they were first sold as German) were not bought to use in many homes.

But now interior designers and collectors want something “different” to decorate modern homes. Anglo-Indian furniture that’s elaborately carved still is a bargain because it is not well-known.

The British East India Co. explored the world, and had created industries in many ports by the 1700s. There was profitable trade in both Chinese and Indian furniture made for the British market. Samples of popular British chair styles, like Chippendale and Queen Anne, were sent to workmen in India to copy, and British tradesmen were sent to train Indian workers. The resulting furniture was a blend of cultures: British shapes and Indian woods like teak, ebony or rosewood. An inlay of ivory or silver was used on expensive pieces. An entire piece might be carved with a lacelike frame filled with birds and flowers. There are many records of shipments of Anglo-Indian furniture, but little documented history. There even were complaints from British cabinetmakers that the quantity of imported furniture was harming their business.

Today, an average Anglo-Indian carved chair in good condition made before 1900 auctions for $150 to $300. Small center tables go for $500 or more.

When you buy, be sure any damage is minor and can be repaired, because the carvings often break.

By JOE HEIM The Washington Post Mike Cahill, 35, is a 2001 Georgetown University graduate whose films include 2011’s “Another Earth” and the just-released “I Origins.” Both were recipients of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

The prize is given to films focusing on science or technology.

Joe Heim: “I Origins” is a movie about whether science can disprove intelligent design.

But it’s essentially a movie about faith.

Mike Cahill: It is a movie about faith in many ways.

Or it’s about a scientific man coming to faith. Some sort of faith, I guess.

Heim: You’re grappling with existential questions.

Cahill: Absolutely. It’s an exploration. It’s the conversation that we would probably have until 6 o’clock in the morning over a bottle of wine, turned into a movie.

[Laughs] It is the thing that is most interesting to me.

The question of the self and whether there is something beyond just the physics of our life.

Heim: When you watch your movie with an audience, are you calm or are you just sick to your stomach?

Cahill: I get into it. I watched it in Toronto recently, and I was in tears at the end. And I was like, wait a second, this is weird.

I made this movie. I’ve seen it 400 times. Why is this moment doing this to me?

Heim: You’re not worried about the audience’s reaction?

Cahill: No, no. With “Another Earth,” it was pretty divided between people who liked it and people who disliked it. And I just like that people watched it. [Laughs] I mean, they own that opinion. I did take an hour and a half of their lives away from

But I did have some great professors who taught film in the English department.

ADVICE Tread carefully when naming baby after relative Dear Abby: What is the protocol for naming a baby after a deceased person? If the name you want to use is a deceased family member’s name, do we ask his next of kin for approval? Do we say nothing? Is it assumed that people who wish to use someone’s name when naming their child should seek permission (whether the person is living or dead)? – Pregnant In Illinois Dear Pregnant: In the Jewish faith, it is traditional for a baby to be named for a deceased parent or grandparent – or at least given a name with the same first initial.

However, if the person who died was a child of a close relative, I can see how that could be very painful for the parents who lost their child.

The appropriate thing to do would be to first have a conversation with the surviving family member(s) to be sure it will be considered the honor it is intended to be and not open fresh wounds.

If it would cause pain, perhaps the

Unfortunately, my parents and siblings have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy when it comes to anything that may stir up emotions. I feel that it’s detrimental to my well-being.

My doctor has suggested cutting my family out of my life.

Dealing with them gives me great anxiety. My mother is a master manipulator who denies my suicide attempt ever happened, and I’m afraid she will tell my extended family members (many of whom

No one outside my immediate family knows about my depression or suicide attempt, and I feel I may be forced to reveal that very private part of my life in order to defend my actions. You have an illness – depression – that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is shared by about 9 percent of our population. It is nothing to be ashamed of.

Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep – no more, no less Dear Doctor K: I read about a new study on sleep and memory.

I understand why too little sleep could affect memory. But why would too much sleep be harmful?

Dear Reader: When it comes to memory, sleep is a Goldilocks issue: Neither too much nor too little is good. Aim for “just right,” says Dr. Elizabeth Devore, an instructor in medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Devore led a new study that suggests getting an “average” amount of sleep – seven hours per day – may help maintain memory in later life.

In 1986 and again in 2000, researchers asked a large number of women who were enrolled in a long-term study about their sleep habits. Women who slept five hours or fewer per night or nine hours or more performed worse on brain testing compared with women who slept seven to eight hours a night. The researchers estimated that “undersleepers” and “oversleepers” were mentally two years older than the women who got seven to eight hours of shut-eye a night.

A study like this one can find only an association, a connection,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff between two things – in this case, the number of hours of sleep and memory. It cannot prove that sleeping more or less than seven or eight hours a night (on a regular basis) is bad for memory. It can only suggest that possibility.

Is the possibility plausible? If so, how might sleep affect memory? People who are persistently sleep-deprived are more likely to have conditions that can decrease blood flow inside the brain. The most common is atherosclerosis of the arteries of the brain. Atherosclerosis blocks arteries, and thereby slows blood flow. This may negatively affect the ability of brain cells to work properly.

Sleep-deprived brains may also collect more deposits of a protein called beta amyloid.

These deposits are linked to declines in memory and thinking and increased risk of dementia.

One of the most interesting and potentially important scientific reports of the past year was a study done in mice. It may, or may not, apply to humans. The

study showed that during sleep the brain “flushes out” toxic substances. If this is true in humans, it could be part of the explanation as to why sleeping fewer than seven or eight hours per night on a regular basis could impair memory. But it wouldn’t explain why people who regularly sleep more than seven or eight hours per night have impaired memory.

What might the explanation be? People who spend more than nine or 10 hours a night in bed often have poor sleep quality. So, for both too little and too much sleep, the important number may be the hours of quality sleep.

To improve your sleep: • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.

• Use your bed only for sleeping or lovemaking.

• If you can’t fall asleep after 15 to 20 minutes, get out of bed. Get back into bed only when you feel sleepy.

• Limit caffeine.

• Don’t take long naps during the day.

The bullying must stop Dr. Wallace: Thank goodness it’s summer break and our 10-year-old son doesn’t have to go to school. Our son is small for his age and, unfortunately, he has poor vision requiring him to wear thick-lens glasses.

We moved to our present location in the middle of the school year, and it was difficult for him to adjust to the new school.

At his previous school, all the kids knew him since first grade and accepted him for what he is: a nice young boy. He had no bullying problem at his old school, but at his new school kids made fun of him and even physically pushed him, sometimes causing him to fall.

When school starts in the fall I plan to talk to the principal to ensure that our son will attend school to get an education, not to be bullied by undisciplined students.

Please tell parents whose children are bullies what to do to end their unacceptable behavior.

My research for your suggestion produced a group of tips for parents and teens presented by the National Association of Social Workers called “Dealing with School Bullying.” These seven tips will help parents to take preventive measures!

1. Know the warning signs. Teens may be too afraid to tell their

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace parents that they are being bullied. If teens frequently come home with bruises and scrapes, or are often upset, it may be an indication that they are being bullied.

2. Acknowledge bullying as a problem. If teens talk to you about bullying, be sure to acknowledge it as a serious problem. Be open, let them know that it is not their fault.

3. Model non-punitive behavior. When kids see their parents use aggressive or hostile behavior, they are more likely to exhibit it themselves.

4. Provide consequences. If your teen shows signs of these behaviors, immediately provide consequences.

5. Deal with siblings.

If siblings display bullying toward one another, discuss it and provide consequences. If not addressed at home, the problem may continue in other places.

6. Communicate with schools. Develop open communication with staff at school, including teachers and counselors.

They will inform you of any bullying behavior your teen displays outside of the home.

7. Intervene when teens are bullying others.

Confront teens displaying aggressive actions about their behavior, and let them know it is an issue. Then discuss alternative behaviors with them, including expressing anger appropriately, talking about their feelings and walking away when they are upset.

As you watch the cards closely, you play well and find bridge to be fun. The work is training your partner also to pay close attention.

Today’s deal can either be a 50-50 bet or a sure thing, depending upon the skill level of East and West. How should they card to defeat three no-trump? West leads the spade five. Declarer takes East’s king with his ace and attacks diamonds.

North added one point for his decent five-card diamond suit and raised to three no-trump.

South starts with only five top tricks: two spades (given the first trick) and three clubs. However, four more winners are readily available from the diamonds. So, if East has the diamond ace, the contract is guaranteed. If West has that ace, maybe he will not find a heart shift; or if he does, it will not prove lethal.

Here, though, as you can see, if West leads the heart jack, then when he gets in with his diamond ace, the contract can be defeated.

But how does West know to lead a heart rather than a club?

West should duck the first diamond to get some help from his partner. East should play first the two to show an odd number. But on the second round, he could play either the eight or the three.

By following suit with the eight, the higher card, East is expressing interest in the higher-ranking of hearts and clubs, the two unplayed suits. This points West in the right direction – if he is watching.
