‘Very large’ elm tree falls, damages cars in Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Elburn resident Deb Cornell said when she looked outside her window early Monday morning, she saw something that startled her.

Cornell, who lives in the 300 block of Pierce Street, noticed her neighbor’s large tree had fallen on top of two cars in Cornell’s driveway.

“I just looked out the window, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God,’ ” she said.

The large elm tree belonged to Jan Carlson, who lives next door. Carlson said he noticed a police patrol had come through the area at about 4 a.m., and the tree still was standing. Cornell said she woke up a little after 5 a.m. to see the tree had fallen.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kaneland High School student Austin Kintz had to gulp down some water after participating in Saturday’s 5K Run/Walk to benefit the nonprofit Children’s Tumor Foundation and its mission to find a cure for neurofibromatosis.

For Kintz, who will be a senior this fall at Kaneland High School, participating in the event was personal. Kintz is on the high school’s cross-country team with Cole Rutter, who has neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that can cause

Kintz was one of several members of the team participating in the event. The team members finished the run first.

“We came out here to run for him,” Kintz said.

About 250 people participated in the event at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve in Geneva. Cole Rutter’s mother, Julie Rutter, who organized the event, said she was happy with the turnout and the fact the weather was cooperative.

“It’s a perfect day,” she said.

Mike Sevison and his wife, Nicole, of Goshen, Indiana, attended Saturday’s event with their daughter, Skylar, who will turn 2 in September. She was diagnosed last year with neurofibromatosis.

Nicole Sevison noted there currently is no cure for neurofibromatosis.

“Raising money helps de-

velop research for cures,” she said.

Saturday’s event also gave the couple the opportunity to talk to other families affected by neurofibromatosis.

“This was the first time we’ve met others impacted by neurofibromatosis,” Nicole Sevison said.

Julie Rutter also took the time to honor those diagnosed with neurofibromatosis.

“They live every day with NF,” she said. “They truly are heroes.”

On Monday, the neighbors were outside working to clear

the street. Carlson said the tree was blocking traffic on Second Street in the village.

“Everybody feels good that there was only property damage,” Carlson said. “I hate to lose these trees, but it’s Mother Nature.”

Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said the “very large elm tree” fell from the west side of Second Street to the east side, near Pierce. Carlson said the tree was at least 40 feet tall.

Carlson, a former Kane County Board member, said people had stopped by to assist.

“The nice thing is, in Elburn, it’s not such a big town that people can’t walk by and lend a hand or offer some advice or condolences,” he said.

“That’s one of the reasons we live in Elburn.”

St. Charles man dies Sunday at Wisconsin lake KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com DELAVAN, WISCONSIN – A St. Charles man died Sunday after jumping in a Wisconsin lake without a life jacket, according to a news release from the town of Delavan Police Department.

According to the release, Lloyd Cross jumped in Delavan Lake on Sunday afternoon to retrieve fishing equipment.

He was not wearing a floatation device, police reported.

He reportedly began showing signs of distress after a few minutes, and his brother-in-law jumped in the water to help. The brother-in-law became fatigued quickly, police reported, and both men were pulled out of the water by nearby boaters.

Police, who were notified of the possible drowning about 1:45 p.m., arrived to find Cross, 49, not breathing, the report stated.

Officers immediately initiated CPR, police reported.

was brought to shore where rescue was waiting, and efforts continued to try to revive him.

Cross was pronounced dead after attempting to revive him for “an extended period of time,” according to the release.

A GoFundMe page has been started at www.gofundme.com/4c5dy5wyeg. As of Monday afternoon, more

than $1,000 had been raised, with a goal of $15,000. Family said those funds will go toward funeral expenses, as Cross had no life insurance.

The visitation will be at Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, with the service at 6 p.m.

A celebration of life will be immediately after the service at Ray’s Evergreen Tavern in St. Charles.

‘FEET HAPPY, BODY HAPPY’ Owner of Geneva shoe repair store dedicated to his craft

By KATIE KULL kkull@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Hossein Shakouri leaned on his hands at the counter of his shoe repair store on East State Street in Geneva and repeated his motto: “Feet happy, body happy.”

He held a pair of coral, slingback pumps above the counter and mimed how he wrapped the backs of the heels in leather to repair the gnawing marks from a dog that got ahold of the shoes.

Shakouri has gained the reputation of a skilled craftsman during his 10 years in Geneva. His store, Greg’s Shoe Repair, at 722 E. State St., has been recognized for the past six years in the Kane County Chronicle’s Best Of The Fox Readers’ Choice Awards.

Shakouri’s relationship with shoes started more than 30 years ago in his home country, Iran, when he was trained by his older brother in the art of shoemaking. According to Shakouri, apprenticeships in Iran can take as long as 10 years, but he finished in just one and a half.

“I finished everything because I love my job; I love shoes,” he said.

Shakouri designed women’s shoes in his home country but took three years off to serve in the Iranian military in the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980s, he said.

He was focused on his work for several years before he met his wife, Shirin Klingerman.

After a courtship process involving family and friends and approval from both parties, Shakouri married Klingerman. They had three children in Iran.

Klingerman said her father was the coroner for the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran, when she was a child, which meant she was a citizen of the United States. When the embassy closed in 1979, Klinger-

In 2001, the family fled to Austria to find an embassy that could help them get to the United States.

Shakouri said he loved his country but thought the United States would be a better place to raise a family and for his children to get adequate schooling. Klingerman also had a desire to see her father.

The family, however, would find out he died by the time they tried to find him.

A journey to the states

At a refugee camp in Austria, the Shakouris met a former pastor at First Baptist Church in Geneva, Kevin Engel.

“At the time, Austria was the easternmost country of the European Union, so at that time, it was very common for smugglers to drop refugees off on a highway in Austria,” Engel said.

Engel met Shakouri when the pastor volunteered at a refugee camp in Austria. Engel

distributed clothes to families – some waiting three to four hours in line. Engel briefly spoke to Shakouri and Klingerman the day they met, but during the course of about six months, the two families became friends.

“Well, in my role at the time, I’d served thousands of refugees at the camp, but this is one of those unique families that I’ve developed a friendship with,” Engel said. “We remain friends to this day.”

During the next three years, Engel interacted with the Shakouris and helped them arrange passage to the United States.

Initially, Klingerman traveled to the states alone because of her citizenship. She stayed with a family friend in Naperville until she could apply for a visa for her spouse and family.

Shakouri joined her less than a year later with their three sons, Amir, Kamyab and Aryan Shakouri.

A proud history

On an afternoon in his

store, Shakouri rummaged behind the counter and slid a thin frame from between two shelves. He pointed to a painting, gilded in gold, of a Persian king and his wife.

“You know King Cyrus?” he said.

King Cyrus was the emperor of the Persian Empire from about 559 B.C. until 530 B.C. He was known for creating the first Charter of Human Rights and exercising benevolence to people of different religious beliefs and races, especially the Jews.

Shakouri used King Cyrus as a positive reflection of his country’s deeply rooted culture, which is sometimes forgotten because of violence in the region.

“This is my country; this is my culture. This isn’t what people look at. People look at the Middle East as shooting, fighting, killing … not true.

This is my country,” Shakouri said.

Shakouri and his family joined First Baptist Church in Geneva when they came to the

states. The congregation and Engel helped the family get settled in America and eventually helped connect Shakouri with Greg’s Shoe Repair.

On the same recent afternoon in the store, Shakouri pointed to a leather-bound, forest green book with gold writing on the cover.

“Some people in the United States think my country is an Arabic country. We do not speak Arabic. … The culture is different,” he said.

Shakouri said the book on the desk was the Bible, written in Farsi. He flipped to the table of contents page. Next to the Farsi symbols, someone had printed the names of the books of the Bible in English.

“In Bible study, the pastor would say go to Job, but I would say, ‘Who’s Job?’ ” Shakouri said. “We call it [phonetically] ‘Aye-oob’ … my friend put Job here so I can find it.”

A new vocation

After a short time working at Greg’s, Shakouri noticed the similarities between shoe repair and designing shoes, which allowed him to extend his repairing abilities to purses, luggage and other leather goods.

Karen Davis, a longtime employee of Greg’s Shoe Repair, remembered a day when a woman brought in a Coach patchwork purse that had been chewed by a dog.

“I thought, ‘There’s no way he can fix it,’ ” Davis said.

“But when he fixed that Coach purse, I couldn’t even tell – that’s how well it was fixed.”

Klingerman said her husband is creative in his trade because he originally designed shoes made of leather.

“I love leather most. I know how much leather is good for people. Most people don’t know … feet have a good relationship with leather. Feet love leather;

“exponential” expansion over the years, both locally and regionally, Dryden said.

The troupe is traveling to perform at the Minnesota Fringe Festival event in early August. After submitting an application, Troupe Strozzi was picked in a lottery to perform in front of 50,000 people.

The troupe is making a “major jump” from participating in previous fringe festivals in both Elgin and Chicago, Dryden said.

“We all know people in this business that do it professionally and make a living out of it,” Dryden said. “And in conversations with some of them

over the last six, eight months has been that they were saying, well, ‘Have you done Minnesota [Fringe] yet?,’ like that was the thing. So, we’re doing that thing, and then we’ll see where it takes us.”

Local residents can see Troupe Strozzi perform in September at the Elgin Fringe Festival, a celebration of performing arts, visual arts, film and music. Among the entertainment taking over downtown Elgin as part of the event, Troupe Strozzi believes it will stand out among the other performers.

“It’s not just what’s written,” said Dryden. “But what’s on stage.”

Pickling event evokes past at Durant House Museum

The Louise White Elementary School student and her parents – Blake and Gordana Schraft of Aurora – finally visited the 1843 brick farmstead Sunday afternoon, the same time a pickling event was happening.

“Luckily, she does like pickles,” Blake Schraft said.

Museum Director Alice Maupin guided visitors through the pickling process, from washing hands to sealing mason jars full of sliced cu-

cumbers, garlic, dill and brine.

The museum, which is at the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles Township, hosts a pickling party each year, Maupin said. Although visitors only pickled cucumbers, she said, those in the 1840s would have pickled “anything and everything” because there was no refrigeration.

Maupin continued to note the differences between life today and life in the 1840s. For example, she told Avery if she were a girl in the house, she probably would have been responsible for bringing water in and out.

“A lot different from what we do now, right?” Maupin said.

Rooney shared her pickle preferences – “I like mine dilly” – and stories of making the food with her grandson.

“We make them in ice cream buckets,” she said.

Once Avery packed her jar with cucumber slices, Maupin directed her to add dill for flavoring. Any part of the dill plant would be OK to use, she said, noting the dried sprigs could be used, as well.

“Everything works,” she said.

The Durant House Museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays through Oct. 4. Weekday hours are 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Aug. 20.

With a motto of, “Laugh first, be offended later,” Troupe Strozzi has changed the face of comedy, according to founder, writer and actor John Dryden.

The Batavia-based comedy group will celebrate its fourth year of performing in October. It debuted in 2011 as “a theater company that didn’t have a theater,” Dryden said.

The group has “contracted and expanded” during its existence, said Dryden. It is currently composed of about 10 members, ranging in age from late-20s to mid-50s. The group follows the principles of “commedia dell’arte” and characterizes itself as “street” and “rebellious” theater, Troupe Strozzi member Scott Purdy said.

Troupe Strozzi set out to break the norms of theater by performing in pubs, but soon realized pub performances didn’t attract an audience, Dryden said.

“People show up to pubs to be loud and drink, not to watch theater,” Dryden said.

“I realized that the old adage about theater being [a] controlled space was absolutely true. … Years down the road, we’ve got very well-respected,

Six years ago, Shakouri bought the store from the original owner, Greg Herwaldt, when he retired. Shakouri credits much of his success in owning his own business to a love of people and animals and a desire to make them happy.

Earlier this summer, local horseman Daryl Paddock approached Shakouri with a challenge to construct a new shoe for a pony with uneven legs at Casey’s Safe Haven horse rescue in Elburn.

After two fittings, Shakouri was able to create a shoe that fixed the pony’s limping walk.

Shakouri’s leather skills are not limited to horse and human shoes. Paddock has noted Shakouri’s skill with working on horse tack – saddles, bridles, stirrup leathers and other leather equipment.

“Being a person that owns horses, you know how import-

ant your tack is,” Paddock said.

“And if you can’t find someone to fix it, sometimes, you just have to throw it away.”

Although Shakouri had never fixed horse tack before, his willingness and skill in leatherwork allows him to meet unique challenges of diverse leatherworking projects.

“Before 25 years ago, I was just making shoes. But now, because I love my job, I fix everything,” Shakouri said.

“Sometimes, customers bring here something I’ve never seen, and I say, ‘No problem, I can fix that.’ ” Shakouri’s dedication to his work keeps him in the store for long hours, sometimes 20 hours a day. He remembers visiting a leather factory on weekends in Elgin when he worked for Greg to find straps to match a purse in need of repair. Now, he stays in the store until late to finish projects for his customers.

“One thing about Hossein is I’ve never met anyone before who is so focused on a goal,” said Engel, the former

pastor. “Hossein’s dream was to always own his own shoe business, and now, he’s a very good, proud business owner.”

The only thing Shakouri wants is to be able to spend

more time with his family, which has grown since he came to the United States. Two years after they came to America, Shakouri and Klingerman had a daughter, Pardis Shak-

ouri.

“I’m working 20 hours a day. I get three hours of sleep, but I’m never tired because I love my family,” Shakouri said.

NORTH AURORA – A former bowling alley at 310 S. Lincolnway will be redeveloped into a self-service storage facility.

North Aurora village trustees Monday voted to approve the plans. Village trustee Chris Faber was the sole trustee to vote against the proposal.

“I would like to see something in that spot that creates jobs or tax revenues,” Faber said after the meeting.

The owners of Next Door Storage, which operates several facilities throughout the Chicago area, proposed converting the former 40,000-square-foot bowling alley into an indoor self-service storage facility.

The concept plan also included building self-storage facilities on the northern and western portions of the property.

“It would be a vast improvement over what is there now,” Next Door Storage owner Jack Murphy said in a recent presentation to

“They are going to do a beautiful job of landscaping,” Berman said. “So that in itself is going to make it

He also noted the property has been for sale for eight years.

“I would love to see some retail [project] there that would bring in lots of money to the village, but it’s been vacant all this time,” Berman said. “They’ve been trying to market it, and things are just not coming to Route 31.”

ST. CHARLES – Several residents and business owners Monday night spoke for and against offering video gaming in St. Charles.

St. Charles aldermen heard the varying opinions for about an hour during its Government Operations Committee meeting. Aldermen late Monday shared their opinions on the issue after press deadline.

At the request of a few business owners and the Loyal Order of the Moose, the city of St. Charles put together a presentation about video gaming and the impact it could have in St. Charles.

St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said he researched and went to various video gaming cafes in places, such as South Elgin and did not hear of any incidents of crime with the machines.

Based on the state average, the income St. Charles could receive from having video gaming might range between $173,900 and $696,600 a year,

said Chris Minnick, the city’s director of finance.

Opponents of video gaming said the revenues generated from the gaming machines comes from millions of dollars worth of losses on the customers playing the machines.

St. Charles residents Mike and Betsy Penny could not attend the meeting, but wrote in a letter read aloud Monday video gaming makes money on people losing money, the couple wrote.

The Pennys wrote in the letter the city should issue a referendum advisory question or conduct a survey to see if the community as a whole would favor video gaming.

Bob Karas, owner of Rookie’s Pub in St. Charles, said video gaming has not negatively affected other businesses outside St. Charles where he is a partner. He would like to offer video gaming at his St. Charles business to help his business financially.

“I’m sure every restaurateur in this town … [sees] this as a big help to keep our doors open,” Karas said.

Keep negotiations in governor’s hands Illinois voters elected Bruce Rauner knowing full well his stance on organized labor and with the expectation that he would negotiate with the state’s labor unions.

A legislative proposal vetoed by the governor in July and now up for an override vote would take that power out of the governor’s hands and into those of an arbitrator.

It would be a mistake.

The legislative proposal, S.B. 1229, would provide for a panel of three arbitrators to consider the proposals put forward by the union and the state. They could choose elements of either, but could not modify them to forge a compromise. The legislation is targeted specifically at Rauner, applying only to contracts that expired June 30 of this year.

The major union representing state employees in Illinois is the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME. In Illinois, almost 40,000 state workers are represented by AFSCME. Its negotiators are seeking an 11.5 percent pay increase for employees over a new four-year contract. Rauner said AFSCME’s contract proposal would cost the state $1.6 billion in salary and pension expenses and eliminate $500 million in health care savings. The administration says the union also wants five weeks of vacation time, a 37.5hour workweek, and more expensive health benefits.

Rauner, citing the disastrous condition of Illinois finances, wants the workers to agree to a four-year pay freeze.

It’s clear the threat of a strike is on the mind of Rauner; his team has been working on contingency plans in the event of a strike, which the sides have agreed will not happen between now and the end of September.

But why would we want to take the power to negotiate out of the hands of our elected chief executive and turn it over to an arbitrator who is unelected and accountable to no one? That’s the kind of backroom dealing that got Illinois where it is in the first place.

Rauner, a venture capitalist and multi-millionaire making his first foray into public service, was upfront about his desire to reduce union influence and hold the line on labor costs in Illinois in light of the state’s dire financial situation.

Illinois voters elected Rauner overwhelmingly, some of them no doubt in hopes that he would do just that.

We want negotiations between the state and its unions to be both transparent and fair. Those making the decisions should be accountable to the taxpayers whose money they are spending.

Overriding Rauner’s veto of S.B. 1229 would do the opposite. Our state legislators should let it stand.

It is time everyone in Springfield, from lawmakers to state employees, face reality: Illinois is broke, and its people are not willing to pay more until they see a serious commitment to changing the broken system that got us here.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘Stunned and shocked’ To the Editor:

I awoke Saturday morning to find my name splashed across news media about something I really have little to do with.

Months ago, I approached Kane County Coroner Rob Russell about a case I am very familiar, wherein the previous coroner’s investigation led to a determination of death that I firmly hold is not accurate.

I asked Mr. Russell, in strict confidence, if he would review the case and consider amending the cause of death if he found it to be different than the “undetermined” the previous coroner certified. Mr. Russell assured me he would keep this confidential and would let me know his findings. That was months ago.

I am still waiting to hear of any developments. The promises of confidentiality were not kept.

I read an investigation is underway. This makes it sound like a lot needs to be done to review this case when actually only three things need to be done. Firstly, the file needs to be located. Secondly, the file needs to be dusted off. Thirdly, and most importantly, the file needs to be read. This should take less than an hour and not cost the taxpayers more than a couple dollars of someone’s time to locate the file. That shouldn’t be difficult.

The case involves a situation wherein someone jammed huge amounts of cocaine into a feeding tube of a woman who did not have use of her hands, could not do this act herself, nor offer any resistance. In my opinion, that amounts to a homicide, a death caused by the actions of another person. This case was certified as an “undetermined” cause of

death, which I have never believed was an accurate determination. Despite my efforts over many years, I could never find if there was an insurance policy on the deceased.

Is my safety at risk now that Mr. Russell has revealed that I have brought this case forward? I am literally stunned and shocked that he used my name without providing me with an opportunity to object and with complete disregard for my privacy and safety. If he attempts to use this case as a justification for recklessly overspending beyond his budget, the citizens of Kane County should know that this investigation should cost precious little, if conducted by someone who knows what they are doing.

League helps volleyball teams sharpen skills for season

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com As the fall girls volleyball season comes to an end, athletes who play for club teams continue their year-round play of the sport.

Even during the summer, teams such as Geneva, Batavia and St. Francis, who all compete in the recently-completed Great Lakes League in Aurora, don’t always field full squads.

So not only do the leagues provide opportunities for underclassmen to step into more important roles, but it also gives the girls returning from club teams a chance to shake off the rust and rebuild the chemistry from their high school seasons.

“That’s what the summer is for,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “You want to work out the kinks during this time so when the preseason rolls around, you’re not doing that. So, in my eyes, the most important thing during the summer is getting familiar with each other again.”

Seitelman stressed that the girls getting reacquainted with playing with each other is important with different club teams having different philosophies.

Looking at the league results, it seems that Geneva got reacquainted very quickly, as a group of core returners, including junior outside hitter and Kane County Chronicle Female Athlete of the Year Grace Loberg, took the top bracket title without Seitelman, who also coaches the Vikings’ boys volleyball team and had a scheduling conflict.

For defending Class 3A state champion St Francis, the league provided much more of an opportunity for younger players to show coach Peg Kopec what they were capable of.

Kopec knows that not everyone can be at the summer league games, so she wanted to focus more on who was on the court more than the notable absences.

“It was a big benefit for us,” Kopec said. “The coaches got to see a lot of these players before tryouts and whatnot.

The girls didn’t rely on anyone else, which was good because it was their team, their matches and their league.

They really got a chance to step up to the plate and show what they can do.”

The Spartans won the second tier bracket at the league, without four mainstays from the state championship team, which excited Kopec about the future of the program.

At Batavia, coach Lori Trippi-Payne decided to split the program into two separate teams, which both finished in the bottom bracket of the league. But she isn’t taking everything to heart when it comes to results.

One reason why she wasn’t overly concerned about the Bulldogs’ lack of success was due to the competition level of the league from top to bottom.

“We were playing for first place of the bottom bracket against Plainfield South ... with a girl going to Texas,” Trippi-Payne said. “There’s good teams everywhere here, so you’re always going up against someone strong. We probably could have finished closer to the top if we kept one team together, but I wanted to give everyone a chance to play.”

Trippi-Payne also said that summer leagues provide the chance to see teams do things you cannot necessarily emulate in practice, which can help come postseason time.

But the soon-to-be 29thyear Batavia head coach got to see younger players bask in the chance to fill leadership roles.

Seitelman joked that she never really knew what kind of lineup would hit the floor each night of the league, but would have to make do with whatever she had.

Geneva Baseball Assn., Marklund team for memorable fundraiser

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com Gerry Schermerhorn didn’t volunteer to coach a baseball team only to teach kids how to play baseball. He wanted the kids to learn far more than how to hit the cutoff man, execute a sacrifice bunt and be good sports.

“I want to teach the boys lessons in the life that they’ll remember forever,” he said.

“That’s one of the main reasons why we worked so hard on the fundraiser.”

Schermerhorn and his pony league Padres raised $545, the most of any team in the Geneva Baseball Association, which raised $4,175 collectively for Marklund.

Located on the border of Geneva and Batavia, Marklund provides compassionate care to individuals, most with severe cognitive deficits that re-

quire 24-hour skilled nursing care.

Under the leadership of Schermerhorn, the Padres played a scrimmage Wiffle ball game against Marklund on Saturday as a reward for their generous fundraising effort.

“The kids and their families really got into raising money for Marklund,” Schermerhorn said. “I fundraised hard to win this and reminded the boys every week to ask people to give.”

With a daughter who is a special needs teacher, Schermerhorn related easily to Marklund’s cause.

“It’s a passion we have in my family,” he said. “We’ve been fortunate in my family to not have any kids with any handicaps, and I’ve always taught kids to respect everyone. We solicited hard to raise funds and I’m really proud of the kids and their families for giving such great support.”

Geneva Baseball Association board member Dan Hanlon came up with the idea of helping Marklund via a monetary-only fundraiser. He was a coaching a youth football team last fall, which played a scrimmage against the Marklund residents. He saw their baseball field, recognized the financial need Marklund fights for every day and devised a plan to raise money for Marklund while rewarding players with a chance to play Wiffle ball for their efforts.

“It was really easy for us to set up a donation page for every team and we kept it so simple with only monetary donations,” Hanlon said. “It was a great way for the kids to learn about supporting a great charity and really was a good marriage for both nonprofit organizations.”

Marklund always is in need of support, and the thousands

raised by the Geneva Baseball Association will certainly help while hopefully open up the doors for future fundraising efforts.

“This was a completely new type of fundraiser, and we hope it leads to similar efforts,” said Stephanie Heinz, development coordinator at Marklund. “The state doesn’t fund everything, and the level of care we provide is substantial. Fundraisers like this help us fill in some of the gaps while also giving these kids a unique opportunity to play baseball as well.”

Saturday’s itinerary was a busy one at Marklund, with the top-fundraising teams in the major, minor, mustang, rookie, pioneer and pony leages all getting opportunities to play on the field for 45 minutes each.

“It was a lot of fun to get to play here with all my friends,” said 11-year-old Logan Mourek of the majors league. “This

would be an awesome field to have in your backyard. I had a lot of fun.”

After shaking hands after playing, 10-year-old Matthew Mikec was all smiles.

“This was so much fun,” he said. “It wasn’t too competitive and just a lot of fun playing with a lot of guys I know. I wish we could keep on playing.”

The pony league Padres played the Marklund residents at 3:45 p.m. before wrapping up the event with their game against the Cardinals at 4:15.

“Things went awesome,” Schermerhorn said. “We had a great turnout, and everybody was engaged in it. To see the parents help out and push the wheelchairs and to see the residents really get into the game was really something special.

It was nothing but love and everyone had a lot of fun. It’s the kind of thing that we hope to be able to do again.”

Kaligian Memorial Golf Tournament keeps growing Ray and Bobbie Kaligian still sensed trepidation among some in the 80-member field at last year’s inaugural Ray Kaligian III Memorial Golf Tournament.

As the charity event that honors their son, a former Geneva boys golf standout who died from carbon monoxide poising in February 2013, returns for a second round Saturday, the Kaligians want everyone at Geneva’s Mill Creek Golf Club to know something: There can’t be too many stories or anecdotes about Ray Kaligian III. “It’s still bittersweet for us. It’s still difficult,” Bobbie Kaligian said. “But it’s so great that we have this event. People don’t want to be asked, and I get that. People may even avoid talking to us because they just don’t know what to say. We love this event because it’s about Ray. It’s all about Ray. We’ve learned so much about our son – good, bad and in between – and it’s so touching to learn things about our son that we didn’t know before.”

One given: their son brought an infectious personality wherever he went.

Registration for Saturday’s tournament at Mill Creek stood at 95 players and counting as of Monday afternoon, with guests expected from several states, as well as Canada.

The Kaligians worked alongside Bryan Knapp, the tournament director and Ray Kaligian III’s longtime friend and Geneva golf teammate, to establish the Remembering Ray Kaligian III NFP as a registered 501c(3) organization. The charity reached

QUICK READ Kevin Druley that status in April, and this year’s tournament will raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, Anderson Animal Shelter and the Kids Golf Foundation at Rich Harvest Farms.

“All three of those are just really nice fits with Ray, we thought,” Knapp said. “We really wanted to identify organizations we thought Ray would support himself.”

The group also welcomed the contributions of Jeff Shaw, Kaligian III’s best friend and fraternity brother at Illinois, for the tournament. Shaw was unable to attend in 2014.

“Through all of this grief, we’re very lucky to have our son’s friends, the ones that really count, still in our lives,” Bobbie Kaligian said.

The tournament, an 18hole scramble beginning at 1 p.m., costs $100 a player per four-person team and includes golf and dinner. Golf only costs $75, with dinner priced at $25. For information or to register, log on to www. raykaligian3memorialgolf. com.

Batavia girls v’ball wins national academic award BATAVIA – The 2014 Batavia varsity volleyball team was once again awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award.

The Bulldogs, who finished the 2014-15 school year with their best ever cumulative GPA of 4.09, have won the award 21 times in the 23 years that the award has been presented.

“This award says a lot about the girls,” Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said. “They are such hard workers and really want to be good role models, as well as do great things after high school. It shows they do a great job of managing their time between being a student and an athlete. We set this as a goal at the beginning of the season, so it was great to see.”

ST. CHARLES – After a successful sophomore high school season, St. Charles North’s Tyler Mettetal took another stride in his baseball career after committing to NCAA Division I South Carolina on Sunday.

“It was always a dream of mine to play in the SEC (Southeastern Conference),” Mettetal said. “It’s a great opportunity for me, there’s great weather, a good coaching staff and also a great school academically.

In the end, I thought it was the place for me.”

Mettetal, a pitcher/outfielder/first baseman who throws left-handed and bats right-handed, also had offers from Notre Dame, Memphis and Kansas State. A mainstay as part of the North Stars

pitching staff in 2015, Mettetal finished the year 8-2 with a 1.36 ERA, while hitting .407 with 28 RBIs in the No. 3 spot in the order.

“It’s nice to finally commit and have it decided,” Mettetal said. “I was pretty stressed out over the last couple of weeks trying to decide where I wanted to play. I couldn’t have done it without (North coach Todd Genke) and Elite Baseball.

But it feels really great to make a decision and I’m excited for my future.”

Chairs have one main purpose, but they are made in multiple shapes, sizes and types of material. Pictures show chairs in ancient Egypt, but they were not in common use until the 16th century. A king or religious leader had a very large chair (throne), often with arms that had elaborate decoration.

Other people sat on stools. But by the 18th century, chairs were part of everyday life for the rich. The standard shape included a high back, wooden seat, four legs, and perhaps arms. But the largest chair in the house, the seat of power, was for the husband. That tradition still remains. Dining-room chair sets have one or two larger armchairs and about six to eight narrow chairs with no arms. Catalogs for manufactured office furniture made from about 1850 to the present include a large chair for the company president, smaller chairs for salesmen, and narrow, lower chairs or stools for secretaries. By the 1900s, woven wicker, metal and plastic all allowed designers to create new types of chairs. The new plastic and mesh chair introduced in 1994 was less ex-

pensive and more comfortable than the standard wooden chairs used for 100 years. It was so popular, it replaced the old wooden chair, and many small wooden chair companies were forced out of business. ** Q: I have a metal “Little Orphan Annie” electric toy stove. It’s red with a white top and four lithographed pictures of Annie and her dog, Sandy, on the front. There are three “burners,” a series of holes punched in the stove top, and two ovens. The stove heats up when plugged in. It’s 8 3/4 inches high, 9 1/2 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. The sides are marked “Made in the United States” and the bottom is embossed “Louis Marx & Co., New York” and “Catalog K43.” What is the value and where can I sell it?

A: The comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” started in 1924. Annie and her dog, Sandy, have appeared in comic books, radio shows, movies, and musicals since then, and many toys, dishes and other memorabilia featuring the characters have been made.

Louis Marx & Co. was in business from 1919 to 1978. The company made two versions of this stove. You have two ovens. The other version, K44, has an upper oven and two lower ovens. Both

stoves were made in different colors and originally came with three baking pans. The stoves date from the 1930s.

They wouldn’t be considered safe for children today. Online, the stoves are priced from $25 to $75. *** Q: I have a very old wooden washing machine that was left in my grandfather’s house. It has a hinged lid. The words “The New Standard Champion Washing Machine” are stenciled on the side. How old is it?

A: Your washing machine is over 100 years old. We found an ad for the Champion Washing Machine Co. in a January 1898 magazine that claimed “Every household should have a New Standard Champion Washer. 100,000 now in use.” With such a large number in use, the machine must have been produced for more than a year by 1898.

The history of the brand is confusing.

Another Cincinnati company, Mollenkamp & Klausmyer, began manufacturing Champion Washing Machines in 1875. The New Standard Champion washing machine was listed as a brand of the Boss Washing Machine Co., also in Cincinnati, in 1903. Boss made its early wooden washing machines of red cypress, which was impervious to water, and tinned nails that didn’t rust.

In rainforests, dung beetles roll up balls of monkey dung containing fruit seeds from the monkey’s meal. They bury the monkey dung, seeds and all. After a while, the seeds sprout and grow new trees.

Grandma dislikes when advice is ignored Dear Abby: Whatever happened to respecting one’s elders and recognizing grandparents as head of the family? I recently returned from visiting my son, his wife and my new grandchild.

My son’s wife and I had many disagreements on how to care for my grandchild. Instead of respecting my years of experience as a mother and appreciating my help, she chose to ignore my instructions and advice.

After I returned home, I was told by my son that I was no longer welcome to visit my grandchild unless I apologized to his wife for trying to undermine her parenting. I told him she should apologize to ME for not showing me respect as the grandmother.

How can I make my son see that it is his wife who is wrong, and not me? – Unappreciated Grandma

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Unappreciated: It would be interesting to know how closely you adhered to your parents’ and in-laws’ parenting advice, because when your children came along I’ll bet you had your own ideas on the subject.

Showing respect and following your orders are not the same thing. It is a mother’s right to care for her baby as she sees fit, and you should show HER the respect she deserves by allowing her to do that and not turning it into a power struggle.

Colonoscopy prep unpleasant but necessary Dear Doctor K: It’s been 10 years since my last colonoscopy. I’m dreading my next one, especially drinking a gallon of liquid laxative. Has colonoscopy prep gotten more tolerable in the last decade?

Dear Reader: Yes, but that still doesn’t make it fun. And you can’t avoid it: You want the doctor to be able to clearly see every inch of your colon. For that, you need a good cleanout.

As you probably know, getting a periodic colonoscopy really is important. Simply put, it reduces your risk of getting and dying from colon cancer. These cancers, and growths that can turn into cancer (polyps), not only can be spotted by colonoscopy, but they also often can be removed before they spread. Find it, and cure it.

That’s the goal. But to find it and cure it, the doctor needs to be able to see it.

However, it is true that for many people (myself included), preparing for colonoscopy is often more unpleasant than the procedure itself. It involves dietary restrictions, powerful laxatives and diarrhea.

The colonoscopy prep is also more unpleasant than the colonoscopy itself because a person getting a colonoscopy often is given a relaxing sedative just before the procedure. You get a little

Fortunately, colonoscopy prep has improved in the past 10 years.

And the days of downing a gallon of laxative to prepare for a colonoscopy are over. You still have to drink a liquid that will trigger bowel-clearing diarrhea. But you don’t have to drink as much. And you can drink it in two doses, rather than all at once.

I spoke to Dr. Catherine Cheney, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

She noted that in recent years doctors have discovered that some pre-cancerous polyps are particularly hard to see. They lie flat against the colon wall. The doctor needs a really clean colon to reliably spot them.

Different medical centers will provide different instructions for bowel prep. Here’s one example: • A few days before the colonoscopy, start eating a low-fiber diet: no whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, or raw fruits or vegetables.

• The day before, don’t eat solid foods. Consume only clear liquids like clear broth, black coffee or tea, clear juice, clear soft drinks or sports drinks, Jell-O, Popsicles, etc.

• The afternoon or evening before, drink the first dose of the laxative preparation. The exact instructions will depend on the bowel prep used and the time of your colonoscopy.

• Throughout the entire prep period, drink lots of fluids. Keeping hydrated clears your colon and maintains your electrolyte balance.

• Six hours before your appointment, drink the second dose of the liquid laxative.

• The day of the colonoscopy, drink clear liquids only. Don’t eat or drink anything two hours before the procedure.

If you can’t get the liquid laxative down, your doctor can prescribe anti-nausea medication.

Finally, if you’re still having trouble with the bowel prep, remember: This short period of discomfort could help save your life.

Teenager considers joining Overeaters Anonymous group Dr. Wallace: I think I’m addicted to food. Of course, everybody eats when they’re hungry, but I often eat when I’m not even hungry. I’m not fat, but I could afford to lose about a dozen pounds. My friend is 30 pounds overweight and she started attending Overeaters Anonymous.

She is excited about their program and wants me to attend with her.

The problem is that she is much heavier than I am and I’m not sure this program is meant for people like me. It is the possibility of being 30 pounds overweight that has me concerned. You told her the question was out of line and advised her to dump him immediately. You also said that whether she was or was not a virgin was none of this guy’s business.

I am a counselor at a crisis pregnancy center and am occasionally privileged to address high school students on the topics of abstinence and safe sex.

The fact is that sex is only truly safe if it’s between two people who remained virgins until marrying each other, and who are faithfully monogamous for life. It’s possible the guy was simply a prudent young man who was seeking such a partner. The girl should have asked the guy if he was a virgin. In today’s deal, look at the West hand. South opens one spade, West makes a textbook takeout double, North jumps to four spades, and everyone passes.

What should West lead?

Note North’s response, which is weak (below game-invitational strength) and promising at least five-card support. (If North has 5-3-3-2 distribution, perhaps he should pull in one notch and raise only to three spades.)

There are three candidates for West’s opening lead: the spade ace, diamond seven and club two. If West just has to wait to score tricks with his four honors, he should cash the spade ace, then exit with a diamond. Here, though, he must lead a low club to have a chance to defeat the contract. What happens after that?

At the first trick, East must table his club jack, the bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high. South wins with his ace and leads a trump to West’s ace. What now?

Trick one marked East with the club queen. So West should continue with a low club. Then East, after winning with his queen, shifts to the heart nine, giving the defense four tricks.

Note that if West does not underlead at trick three, declarer gets 10 tricks via four spades, four diamonds, one club and one club ruff in the dummy.
