Sheriff’s Office National Night Out set

Geneva Library Board vacancy draws 6 candidates

ST. CHARLES – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office National Night Out event is set from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at 37W755 Route 38, St. Charles. The event includes a face painter and a balloon artist, as well as a Superior Air medical helicopter. Also, the Sheriff’s Office bomb unit, court security and K9 unit will be in attendance.

TriCity Family Services’ Trivia Night to return Saturday in Batavia BATAVIA – TriCity Family Services’ Trivia Night is returning on Saturday at the Batavia Moose Lodge, at 1535 S. By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Six people filed applications to be considered for a vacancy on the Geneva Library Board, officials said.

The names of the six were released after the Kane County Chronicle filed a Freedom of Information Act request.

The library released only the names and no other information, such as a resume and their reasons for wanting to serve on the library

board.

The six are Jennifer Bruggeman, Robert McQuillan, Ellen Fultz Schmid, Zachary Ploppert, Charles O. Ellenbaum and William Broderick.

McQuillan is a co-founder of Geneva TaxFACTS, a local taxpayer watchdog group, and Ploppert lost two bids to be elected as an alderman in the 1st Ward and recently was appointed to the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission.

The vacancy was created when board member Steve Andersson

resigned last month to pursue his campaign for State Representative in the Nov. 4 general election. Andersson won the Republican primary March 18 and does not face opposition in the general election.

The board scheduled a closed session for Aug. 11 to meet with the candidates.

A time for the meeting has not yet been scheduled.

The replacement would serve until a two-year seat becomes open in the April 2015 election, officials said.

Shoppers flock to Rover Rescue charity garage sale in N. Aurora

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The goods were laid out all over the front yard, driveway and garage, everything from clothes to dishes, Christmas decorations to books, furniture to Halloween costumes for dogs.

At the tail-end of its three-day run on Saturday, the Great Annual Rover Rescue Garage Sale was still offering bargains galore and all to help the organization’s cause.

Teri Grandt of North Aurora is the foster home coordinator for Rover Rescue and hosted the sale.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” Grandt said. “We generally make about $5,000 ... for vet bills. We don’t have anybody in our organization that’s paid; it’s all volunteer. So all of our money – every single dime we make – all goes toward vet bills.”

By mid-morning, he pulled a wad of cash from his pocket.

“All today,” he said but noted he has many more tools at home.

Whowell, who turned 81 Sunday, said his collection began years ago when he acquired tools from his 93-yearold neighbor after her death.

The tools had belonged to her father, who was born in 1870 and likely began his tool collection in the 1880s, Whowell said.

CAMPTON HILLS – Even after 15 years of collecting tools, Dennie Cole considers himself a beginner.

That’s why the Bridgeview resident attends Garfield Farm Museum’s Antique Tool Show, which attracts who he calls the professors or the professional tool collectors.

“I learn stuff from them,” Cole said Sunday, standing behind tables displaying his collection.

For 20 years, the show has aimed to bring together the enthusiasm and knowledge of the Early American Industries Association and the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association to educate the public in the tools, methods and technologies used as the Industrial Revolution and Industrial Age developed.

It is the only show in the Midwest that both associations participate in and that is also open to the public, according to Garfield Farm Museum.

As the sun made some tools hot to touch, attendees browsed such items as hatchets, chisels, gunny sacks, saws, locks, mallets, shovels, knives, toolboxes and even a harpoon circa 1850 that was made from the wreckage of

At the plate, however, Cougars hitters weren’t so easily fooled.

The Cougars notched 17 hits – all nine men in the order had at least one – as they swept the Rivers Bandits with a 9-5 win at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Dunston drew a walk with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, and moments later, he was tagged out by first baseman AJ Reed, to the confusion of many among the 7,149 spectators.

Torrez struck out six in six innings, allowing five hits and walking one.

Brockmeyer supplied the lone long ball for the Cougars, swatting a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth that gave Kane County a 6-3 lead.

Brockmeyer gave new Cougars catcher Victor Caratini a break behind the plate but Caratini remained in the lineup as designated hitter and notched a pair of singles with an RBI. Brockmeyer, Daniel Lockhart and Chesny Young had three hits apiece for the Cougars.

All that offensive production ensured Quad Cities’ hidden ball trick would be cold comfort at the end of a three-game sweep for the Cougars.

Johnson wasn’t impressed with the River Bandits’ ploy.

“I don’t really buy into all that trickery [stuff],” Johnson said. “That’s kind of like Little League.”

Martinez, Caratini make strong first impressions GENEVA – After a week full of transactions shuffled the roster, the Kane County Cougars saw dividends from the newcomers Saturday night.

Players who haven’t been around long enough to get nameplates in the locker room shined for the Cougars in an 8-2 victory over Quad Cities.

In their respective debuts for the Cougars (24-17 second half, 69-41 overall), pitcher Jonathan Martinez and catcher Victor Caratini both were key contributors.

In his first appearance for Kane County, Caratini took a 1-1 offering back up through the middle for a single, scoring Jeimer Candelario. Caratini’s RBI capped a three-run first inning for the Cougars.

Caratini drove in additional runs in his ensuing two atbats with another single in the third inning and an RBI groundout in the bottom of the

fifth. Caratini finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs on the night.

Defensively, Caratini worked with his fellow newcomer Martinez, and the battery never ran into trouble.

Martinez was efficient, throwing 44 pitches in five innings before being pulled in favor of Michael Wagner.

Martinez earned his eighth victory of the season in his Kane County debut. The 19-year-old was on a short leash in his first outing, expected to pitch four innings or 60 pitches.

“We sat down before the game and talked about his style, and what sequences he likes to use,” Caratini said through pitching coach David Rosario.

Martinez was acquired as the player to be named later in the Cubs’ trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Darwin Barney while Caratini came from Atlanta on Thursday for Emilio Bonifacio and James Russell.

tinez. I don’t think he broke a sweat out there,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson added. “[The Cubs’ front office] definitely did their homework on these guys.”

Another Cougars newcomer, Jasvir Rakkar, was brought in during the eighth inning and walked his first batter before striking out four in the final 12/3 innings to close out the game.

Rakkar’s parents drove down from Canada and were in attendance to see him as a professional for the first time.

“You could tell he was a little nervous,” Johnson said.

“But that shows his mentality and composure as he got it together and made the pitches he needed to.”

The Cougars roughed up River Bandits starting pitcher Kevin Comer for three earned runs in three innings but 81 pitches forced Quad Cities (2120, 56-54) to go to the bullpen in the fourth inning.

Comer struggled against Kane County in his last start

against the Cougars, as he surrendered five runs in four innings July 10.

The Cougars plated runs in five of the first six innings and improved their Midwest League-leading home record to 43-15.

More roster moves: The Cougars announced two more roster moves to add to the pile of

transactions in the past week.

Pitcher Zak Hermans will be sent to Short-A Boise, while Tyler Bremer will be rejoining the team from Daytona.

Bremer was 5-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 26 appearances for the Cougars this season before eight appearances in Daytona, culminating in a 0-1 record with a 4.70 ERA.

Dear Abby: I am a happily married, 26-yearold female with just one problem: I’m afraid to have children.

I have always wanted children, and it’s something my husband and I often discuss. Anytime we are asked when we plan to start our family, we always say four to five years, but we have been saying this same thing for four years. I always thought I’d be ready by now.

My husband has been very sick for the past few years and had to take time off work.

We were able to scrape by on my salary, but it was tough.

He returned to work recently and is fine. But now all I can think about is how much children cost, and I’m afraid we’ll never have enough money to have a baby.

I also worry about what if our child would be killed in an accident, molested or kidnapped!

I ask myself why anyone would want to bring children into such a scary world, yet I still want them.
