American Society for Quality to have dinner meeting ELGIN – The American Society for Quality will have a dinner meeting Tuesday at Nick’s Pizza and Pub, 990 S. Randall Road, Elgin.

Kaneville Fest brings smiles with good times

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Despite the rain on Saturday, Kaneville Fest continued on as planned – with garage sales and a car show. By the time the rain stopped, those at the festival were ready for the ice creamand watermelon-eating contests, pork chop and chicken dinner and fireworks.

A former Kaneville resident, Elizabeth Besco, now of Aurora, said she would not miss it.

“I love to watch the kids and the fireworks,” Besco said.

Another former resident, Lyla Staton, who now lives in Keokuk, Iowa, also said she would not miss it.

“The kids have a parade – and the garage sales,” Staton said, adding she found some great bargains.

Kaneville resident Dawn Schleifer said she enjoys everything from the car show to the contests, dinner and fireworks.

“I’ve lived in Kaneville since I was 1 year old,” Schleifer said.

The ice cream- and watermelon-eating contests took on lives of their own, with cheering parents, family and friends supporting their favorites while volunteers kept track

of who was who in each age group.

As the contests wound down, volunteers started grilling fires for the pork chop and chicken dinners.

“This is such a close-knit community,” Besco said. “Pat Hill is the heartbeat of the community.”

Hill is the village president and the owner of Hill’s Country Store. Hill said Hershey provided free vanilla ice cream for the contests.

While the weekend’s festivities were winding down, Kaneville would be adding more to do later in the year, Hill said.

“We’re bringing back the street dance in October,” Hill said.

Police report 2 incidents involving girls, male strangers KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police early Sunday reported its second incident in as many days of a 13-yearold girl who encountered a male stranger in her neighborhood.

The latest incident occurred at 9:14 p.m. Saturday in the 3400 block of Voltaire Lane in St. Charles, according to a St. Charles police child incident bulletin. The previous incident occurred at 4:56 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Indiana Street, police have said.

Although there are some basic similarities in each in-

cident, it is too early to determine whether the suspects are actually the same man, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said in an email Sunday night.

In the Saturday incident, the girl was walking toward a park on the 3400 block of Voltaire Lane when she saw a man standing next to a neighbor’s home near a bush, the bulletin states.

The male subject attempted to lure her to him by saying that he was hurt, but the girl ran back to her residence, according to the bulletin.

The man was described as white with a thin build, in his late 40s to early 50s, with

dark, short hair and a dark goatee, the bulletin states.

Police said he was wearing a white striped shirt over blue jeans.

It is not known whether the man had a vehicle or any means of transportation, according to the bulletin. A search of the area revealed no suspects or leads.

Police earlier reported an incident of a 13-year-old girl being followed home from school on Friday in the 1500 block of Indiana Street. The girl from the first incident is not the girl from the second incident – they are different girls, Kintz wrote in his email.

The girl from Friday’s incident was riding her bike and was followed home by a man in a four-door silver Chevrolet Impala for several blocks, police stated.

The suspect in the Friday incident was described as white and heavyset, in his 40s, with white or gray hair wearing glasses and possibly having a slight beard. Police said he was wearing a yellow Hawaiian shirt with a black splint on his left wrist and arm.

The girl ran into her apartment building while the driver pulled into the parking lot and began taking pictures of the building, police said.

The man never attempted to speak to the girl, according to an earlier child bulletin.

When the girl’s brother went outside and began taking photos of the car, it left the area, police said.

The Impala had a broken rear bumper with a large piece missing just to the right of the license plate, police said. The vehicle last was seen in the area of 14th and Indiana streets, the earlier bulletin stated.

The man never attempted to speak to the girl, according to police.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call police at 630-377-4435.

Batavia Public Library Board president announces run KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BATAVIA – Batavia Public Library Board President Doug Sullivan on Saturday announced his candidacy for the Kane County Board.

He is running as a Republican in District 10. The Republican primary election will take place on March 15,

and the winner of that primary will run in the general election on Nov. 8.

Sullivan has served as president of the Batavia Public Library District Board of Trustees since 2011, according to a news release from Sullivan. First elected to that board in 2005, he was re elected in 2009 and 2013, the re-

lease stated.

Sullivan also serves on the city of Batavia’s Historic Preservation Commission, having been appointed in 2012, the release stated. He manages the marketing department at Pace Suburban Bus, the regional public transit agency. He also advocates for Pace’s interests to the fed-

eral government and Illinois’ congressional delegation, according to the release.

“The residents of the 10th District deserve a county board member who is an engaged, active participant in the process,” Sullivan stated in the release.

Sullivan has a master’s degree in public administration

from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in public policy studies from Vanderbilt University, the release stated. He is a nearly lifelong resident of Batavia and a Batavia High School graduate. He and his wife, Erin, live in Batavia with their English bulldog, Sophie.

ST. CHARLES – A group of people near Katy Schulz on Sunday morning cheered after she hit a target with an axe on her second try.

“I’ve never thrown an axe before – I kind of had to get a feel for it,” Schulz, a St. Charles resident, said later in the day.

Schulz, a member of CrossFit Tri-Cities, was one of more than 50 people to compete Sunday in the teams competition at the first Jack Axe Games and Festival held at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

The games consisted of a one-and-a-half-mile course with 17 obstacles such as a caber throw, the famed axe throw, cross-cut sawing and more.

“Everything about this is a little unique,” Jack Axe co-founder Eric Klein said.

“You have to have the endurance but also the strength.”

Klein, a Batavia resident, developed Jack Axe with Eric Winkler of St. Charles. The first day of the festival Saturday suffered a little because of the stormy weather, but 35 people still competed in the individual Jack Axe competition, Klein said.

The Rockin For Veterans benefit concert that followed Saturday’s games was also a hit, he said.

festival, including the music and the bounce house for children.

The Jack Axe co-founders hope to make its next installment bigger and better. Many of this year’s participants want to come back and compete again, Klein said.

“Jack Axe is just getting started ... we kind of want to take over the world with it,” Klein said with a smile.

East falls to South Elgin in opener

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – The St. Charles East football team felt pretty good about itself heading into halftime Saturday, and even better after quarterback Zach Mitchell’s touchdown run cut the South Elgin lead to eight with just over five minutes to play.

But the Storm responded right away and things began to unravel for the Saints, as South Elgin capitalized on mistakes to get the 28-6 win in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

The Saints (0-1) recently adopted the triple option offense and had success at times wearing down the South Elgin defense. But aside from Mitchell’s eight-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run, East had trouble finishing off drives for much of the day.

“We couldn’t finish once we got into the red zone,” Mitchell said. “We’re such a a young team and I think we’re only going to get better from here. Today can definitely be a learning experience and once we get better, we can help out the defense.”

Mitchell credited the East defense for keeping the Saints in the game as long as it did.

The game remained scoreless until South Elgin quarterback Jake AmRhein hooked up with his favorite target, Derek Kumerow, on a long 55yard touchdown with 1:38 left in the first half.

The Saints had trouble containing Kumerow for most of the day. Whether it was quick passes or a couple deep over the top of the East defense, Kumerow was a handful. He finished with 10 catches for 197 yards and a score.

“This was really the first meaningful fourth quarter this group has played in awhile,” East coach Bryce Farquhar said. “We’re a young team and we’re learning. We’re certainly not happy with the result.

We don’t accept the result because we know we can be better. It took time to get used to things, but there were positives.”

But South Elgin answered.

And quickly. On the first play of the ensuing drive, AmRhein handed the ball to veteran running back Shawn Griffin, who bounced off a couple tackles and went 60 yards for a score.

South Elgin finished with 501 total yards, and Griffin finished with a game-high 175 rushing yards after having just 18 in the first half. East was led on the ground by Mitchell with

66 yards, Dante Macaluso (62 yards) and Cam Canales’ 54 yards. Canales did not play the second half because of an undisclosed injury.

East starting senior linebacker, Mitch Guillaume, also did not play because of a right knee injury.

“We got a little away from our game plan in the first half,” South Elgin coach Patrik Pistorio said. “And that’s credit to (St. Charles East.

They out-schemed us on a few things. But in the second half we got back to our style and what we do best. That has a lot

to do with getting the ball to (Griffin) and we were able to pull away a bit.”

Griffin’s score not only got the South Elgin student section jumping around, but may have rattled the Saints’ offense. East got the ball back and its first play resulted in a lost fumble by Mitchell. The Storm marched five plays and AmRhein found the end zone on a two-yard run to seal the win.

Despite the loss, East feels as if it can find positives from the game. In their first game implementing the triple-op-

tion, the Saints tallied 202 yards, all but 17 of which came on the ground.

“I really truly believe this was a good learning experience for us,” Mitchell said.

“Today showed a lot of us what we’re capable of. The score doesn’t show that, but we know we can take positives away from today and build on it to get better for next week and the rest of the season.”

In his first varsity start, Mitchell attempted only four passes with one completion, for 17 yards to Canales, and an interception by Kumerow.

Arrieta wins a lot. In large part because he does very well just about everything it takes to win – enough that he might win a Cy Young Award if he keeps up his pace through September.

“His stuff is as good as anybody out there,” said former MVP Buster Posey, the Giants catcher who gets heavy doses of the Dodgers’ Cy Young tandem of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke annually. “He’s up there at the top.”

If he gets to 20 wins before anybody else this year, he’ll be just the fourth to reach the mark in three seasons.

There have been only 23 20-win seasons in the past 10 years – after 45 in the previous 10 nonstrike seasons.

And 95 in the 1970s.

It’s at least rare in an age of five-man rotations and pitch counts. It can also be a sign of durability and pitching deep into games.

The Cubs and Arrieta haven’t had even initial conversations about extension talks, and with Arrieta under club control through arbitration for two more seasons it might be more than a year before anything gets serious.

But whether Arrieta wins 20 or not, if he stays healthy and keeps up the kind of dominance he has shown since he was traded in 2013 from the Orioles, the length of the Cubs’ competitive window could have a lot to do with the length of Arrieta’s Cubs career.

Arrieta said he has no problem with betting on himself through the arbitration years.

“I’m going to make money regardless,” he said, “so I’m not overly eager to sign anything. I’m just trying to focus on the important things for our club. And just to be ready for that next start.”

Boras already is working up Arrieta’s case, dismissing age as a negative (he’ll be 30 next season) and spinning his lack of innings in a season into positive (his 174 this year are a career high).

Boras already drawing comparisons to another one of his clients, Max Scherzer – the former Cy Young winner, who got a seven-year $210 million deal from the Nationals as a free agent last winter.

Scherzer turned down a six-year, $144 million offer to remain with the Detroit Tigers last year before becoming a free agent.

“I always tell owners, ‘The best bet for you when you want to sign [pitchers] is ones that are proven but yet are proven with lesser innings.’ Max Scherzer. He had 1,200 innings. You find me a guy who has Cy Young capabilities with only 1,200 innings in the big leagues.

Most guys have nearly 2,000.”

Arrieta has 740⅓ in the majors – 1,241⅓ in eight professional seasons overall.

“So he’s kind of ideal for the free agent dynamic, because he’s a brilliant talent, and he’s had to utilize fewer innings to find the station of being a No. 1 pitcher,” Boras said. “I think we can say that about Jake Arrieta now, that he’s reached the status of a No. 1 pitcher.”

PLAINFIELD – The Geneva girls volleyball team started off its season after winning the Plainfield North Invite on Saturday. The Vikings beat St. Charles North in the championship match, 25-20, 25-22.

Geneva (6-0) also beat Minooka (25-20, 25-19) and Lincoln-Way North (25-14, 25-20) on Saturday to advance to the championship against the North Stars.

“It is always nice to see how we match up with them,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “It was a good match (with North) and overall I was happy to see us take care of business in two sets, in each match, and not let teams back into it.”

Ally Barrett led Geneva on the day with 26 kills, 17 digs and five aces. Kyley Thomspn and Ally Mullen had 12 kills apiece, while libero Payton Bellano had 26 digs and eight aces in the three matches Saturday.

Batavia also played at the Plainfield North Invitational and finished with a 2-3 record, good enough for fifth place in the Bronze Division.

The Bulldogs, now 3-3, had wins over the weekend against Tinley Park (25-17, 25-12) and Bolingbrook (26-24, 22-25, 25-23) in the consolation championship Saturday.

Batavia was led in the tournament by Sydney Cavanaugh’s 30 total kills and Kate-

lynn Fegan, who had 43 digs, five aces and seven assists.

At Wheaton, Kaneland volleyball won two of three matches at the Wheaton North Tournament on Saturday. The Knights (3-2) beat Montini (2125, 25-15, 25-23) and Yorkville (27-25, 25-12), but fell in their final match of the day (18-125, 23-25) to Glenbard West.

LOS ANGELES – As Jake Arrieta tried to become the majors’ first 17-game winner Sunday, with more than a month left in the season, he said he doesn’t think about achieving the increasingly rare 20-win season.

“For me, it’s how many times can I give my team a chance to win?” said Arrieta.

“If I do that every time out, then the wins are just going to pile up.”

How valuable is that stat anyway? Not valuable at all, say almost everybody familiar with the other ways to measure pitching performance these days.

But at least one person who will have a lot to say about setting the value of the burgeoning Cubs’ ace the next few years strongly disagrees.

“That is so not true,” said Arrieta’s agent, Scott Boras.

“Mr. Owner, how are you?

Is your last name going to begin with a ‘W’ or an ‘L?’ Because those are the only two alphabets of owners.

So 20 wins, thank you very much.”

As Arrieta took the league’s No. 2 ERA the mound Sunday, his value seems to be rising with every quality start he adds to his streak of 13 – and every win.

He threw the Cubs’ first no-hitter since Carlos Zambrano hit the mark Sept.

“You’ve got to figure out a way to get your team to the win,” Boras said. “And so when people say to me, in an evaluation what the value of that is, it may not be the final metric, but I’m telling you, to the people that own these teams, it is the metric.”

Note South’s two-spade jump-advance of his partner’s takeout double. So many inexperienced players bid the suit that they prefer at a minimum level regardless of point-count.

A minimum bid shows 0-8 points. With 9-11, advancer must jump in his suit. (With 12 points or more, he cue-bids the opener’s suit.)

Declarer mustn’t concede two club tricks. However, since only 13 high-card points are missing, surely the club finesse is losing.

After winning trick three, South draws trumps and cashes dummy’s diamonds. Now he leads a club. If East plays low, declarer covers with his eight.

This endplays West; he must either return a club away from the king or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

However, if East knows about defense against an elimination and endplay, he will play the club 10 at trick nine.

This gets West off the endplay and defeats the contract.

When declarer is trying for an endplay, it’s second hand high.
